Christmas is my favorite time of the year. As we get ready for another holiday season, we wanted to give you a jump-start on buying local this year. We know many businesses in the Sioux Empire are run by local families, and we want to help support them. Whoever you are looking to shop for this holiday season, we have lots of local options to choose from. A great gift that keeps on giving is an experience, and we have many options available this year. In fact, we may have to start a new tradition in our family! One of my family’s favorite holiday traditions is to go and cut down our Christmas tree each year. We usually think the trees are too small when we look at them, but always find out when we get home that it’s too big! It’s something we have fun doing and look forward to every year. Share with us some of your family’s favorite traditions on our Facebook page. We have lots of giveaways going this month, so be sure to follow us.

Steff NEXT ISSUE: Working Parent: As many parents work to juggle busy schedules between running children to activities and working full-time, we’re here to inspire you and help you find a balance. Working parents, our December/January issue is for you!

Healthy Holiday Pregnancy The holidays are such a wonderful time of year to be pregnant, but the hustle and bustle can also leave you feeling fatigued. Follow these tips to keep feeling festive this holiday season.

Put your feet up! You’ll be invited to holiday parties, you’ll be doing your holiday shopping, but it’s important you take time to rest. This time of year can be tiring for anyone and just plain exhausting when you’re pregnant. Get your rest when you can and stay well hydrated. Drinking plenty of water (most resources suggest 10-15 cups per day) is vital during pregnancy. Try replacing sugary drinks with a large glass of water with a fruit infusion for a treat! Lean on others. While it can be rewarding and fun to plan all the holiday gatherings, let someone else do the work this year! You can offer to help by bringing a dish to share, but try to reduce your stress by letting someone else do the entertaining. Close friends and immediate family can help monitor your stress levels. Make a specific list of things you need to accomplish this holiday season and ask for help! Making time for relaxation through deep breathing, yoga or even a prenatal massage will also help you and baby stay healthy during the hectic holidays.

Show your smile. During your pregnancy, you’ll always receive unsolicited advice, and it’s inevitable during the holiday season. Try to remember that family and friends offer advice out of love and it’s okay to make parenting decisions that work best for your family. Responses such as “Thanks! We appreciate your care and concern about our baby,” or “Thanks! We will ask our care team about that at our next appointment” will acknowledge the suggestion and give you room to make your own choices. Keep nutrition a priority. Vitamins are even more vital this time of year when we sometimes choose less healthy options at get togethers. If you’re attending a party, but aren’t sure what’s on the menu, eat your meal ahead of time and pack a few healthy snacks in case the options at your destination are limited. Try to avoid indulging in too many sugary snacks, but don’t feel bad for eating a cookie or two! Coming up with some basic boundaries will help keep you and your baby happy and healthy during the holidays. The most important thing to remember is the real reasons for the holiday season. Celebrate with friends and family and celebrate the new life you’ve created. n

Gift of Experience

Whether for a holiday or a birthday, finding gifts that are thoughtful, personal, and add value to the recipient’s life can be a challenge. Sometimes, the thought of adding more “stuff ” to the playroom can seem overwhelming, too. Perhaps this is the reason experience-based gifts such as tickets to museums and events have been gaining traction as a popular way to celebrate. Research published by San Francisco State University found that people who spend their money on experiences rather than material items felt happier and believed their money was better spent. Additionally, researchers found a direct correlation between spending time with loved ones and happiness. With sporting events, homework, and the general dayto-day activities of family life, carving out time to be together can be difficult if families are not intentional about it. “More and more, we see families coming through the door that are here as part of an experienced-based gift,” says Kati Hanson, director of guest services at the Children’s Museum of South Dakota. “Families who spend time playing together build memories that last a lifetime.” Experience-based gifts give families a chance to try new things, and they don’t have to cost a lot of money. Take a stay-cation camping trip in your own basement. Go for a winter hike and make hot cocoa outside. Stay up late and play a new board game. Day trips to local tourist attractions can also make a great gift.

12 |

November 2017 | thehoodmagazine.com

Wrapping an experience gift may seem tricky. Here are a few ideas on how to give a gift that is an experience: • M ake the “giving” part an experience in itself. Send the gift receivers on a scavenger hunt with multiple stops and clues. • C reative packaging. If the experience is a ticket or membership card, wrap it in multiple packages starting with a big box, moving to smaller boxes until you get to the gift itself. If there isn’t a ticket, create a homemade certificate. • P ack up small items needed for the experience. For example: pack snacks, toys and books if your experience gift requires a car ride. You don’t need to buy new items, often items you already have can be repurposed. • H ead off to the adventure on the fly! Get in the car with bags packed. It will be fun to have your family guess the destination. • G ive an empty photo album or scrapbook. Journal during or after your experience to be sure it will be remembered for a lifetime. n

family by Todd Gannon, Riverview Christmas Tree Farm

The Perfect Christmas Tree Selecting the perfect Christmas tree for your home can be a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be as difficult as you might think. All you need is a little knowledge, and you can have the perfect tree for your home. The first thing you’ll want to decide is if you plan to cut your own tree down, or buy one from a local store. Choosing and cutting your own can be a fun family tradition and ensures you will have the freshest and longest lasting tree available. The other option is to head to one of the many retail locations that have pre-cut trees available. This option is convenient if you’re pressed for time. Many pre-cut trees are actually cut during the fall and then wrapped up tight and stored in huge piles to keep from drying out. As soon as they get to the retail location, the clock starts ticking on needle retention.

Next you must choose the species. Fir are the most popular and most expensive. They offer great needle retention, a large number of firm branches for ornaments and are the most fragrant. Pine trees are also a popular choice and are often considered the “traditional tree.” Their price point is much lower and feature medium to long needles. Nearly all pine trees have been dyed to give them a deep green color. A third option is a spruce tree. They are very uniform in size and shape. The downfall of these types of trees is that they have very sharp needles, making decorating a little more challenging.

Once you have decided on the species, the most important thing to consider is what looks good to you at first sight. It’s really that simple. Do you like the looks of a tall or short tree, skinny or fat, tightly sheared or a little wild? These are all personal preferences and you can’t go wrong with what looks good to you. Make sure to measure the space you plan to put it in to ensure that the tree you pick fits the space properly. Obviously bringing home a tree that is too big can be a problem, but getting a tree too small for the space can be just as frustrating.

an A re Th

um

Muse

#Mo

Also, don’t rule out a tree with one poor side. In most cases the tree will be against a wall and one side will never be visible. Doing so will give you a much larger selection to choose from and may allow you to find the perfect tree that many others overlooked. Once you have your tree home, proper care for your tree is essential for maximum enjoyment. If you purchased a pre-cut tree you need to cut the bottom two inches off to open up the trunk so it will take water. This step is not necessary for fresh cut trees. The most important thing is to keep the tree watered. Fresh cut trees can drink close to five gallons of water a day in the first week, pre-cut trees will drink much less. If you let the tree go dry, you will have greatly reduced the needle retention of the tree. n

for the Holiday Season

Tis’ the season for celebrations! Throughout the year we look forward to this joyous time of year when our families come together to celebrate the holidays; delighting in each other’s company, enjoying delicious food, and sharing thoughtful gifts. It’s the “most wonderful time of the year!” It becomes very easy to get caught up in the excitement of the season that we don’t realize how quickly we are draining our wallets. For this reason, beginning the season with a well planned budget is essential. Creating a holiday budget and plan: 1. C reate a list of gift recipients, gift ideas, even ideas for stocking stuffers. If paper lists are not your preferred choice, there are apps available for keeping track of gift shopping. 2. C reate a list of all of the food you plan to prepare for the season with an estimated total cost. 3. M any people love to decorate their homes this time of year. This is one area where we can go overboard with very little effort. Designate a set amount of money you can spend on decor this year. Perhaps plan to only purchase one new decorative item per year. 4. Assign an amount to each person on your gift recipient list. Whether you can only do $10 per person or $200 per person, stick to the planned amount. 5. Take out cash or set aside all your money in a separate account from your main checking account, to prevent you from overspending. If you are tempted to use credit cards, leave them at home when you shop.

family

Budgeting

41

Additional ways to save on gifts, decor, and food during this season. • For those of you with multiple children, one easy way to keep track of all of those tiny stocking stuffers is to purchase two-gallon ziploc bags to store any fun items that you find throughout the season. Label each bag with each kid’s name before storing in a box that can easily be hidden! • For older kids, choose a theme for gifts - everyone gets a new robe, a new tablet, or new books. • Browse through books and toys at consignment shops and thrift stores. • Check online sales on Black Friday and beyond. • Purchase either white, brown, or any designed wrapping paper in bulk. Use it for all gifts over a period of a few years. • If you are crafty, take some time to sew together some re-usable gift bags you can use year after year. n Visit TM

by Jay Tripp, Schoppert’s Piano Gallery

Pianos: A Guide to Buying Used When parents are looking to get their children started with piano lessons, they will often explore the option of a used piano. One of the common concerns with purchasing such a large item is investing money into something a child may lose interest in. If you’re looking to cut costs by buying used, keep these helpful tips in mind as you shop. 1. Shop with Caution Online Buyers are emotional. We’ll see something that looks or sounds perfect and get attached, because we can visualize it in our homes or picture the kids using it. But you can’t believe everything you see or read online. When you’re trying to sell something online, do you ever describe the item’s condition as “poor” or advertise that it doesn’t work? I didn’t think so. The thing is, pianos can look amazing from the outside, but there are 12,000 parts on the inside. Over 5,000 of those parts are moving. You must be cautious when buying a piano online. If you discover an instrument you like, hire a piano technician to take a look at it and determine if it’s in good condition. You don’t want to end up with a piano that doesn’t function properly. A broken piano is nothing more than an expensive piece of furniture. 2. Stay in Tune Just because a piano has never been played doesn’t mean it doesn’t require service. Summers are humid and winters are dry here in South Dakota, and those conditions alone can affect the wood and other materials that make up a piano.

42 |

November 2017 | thehoodmagazine.com

Tuning your piano twice a year is ideal. Failing to keep up with tunings can dramatically shorten the instrument’s life and cost you thousands of dollars in repairs. 3. Shop Local Find a local piano dealer in your area and pay them a visit. They will have the expertise and knowledge to help you make an educated decision on your family’s purchase. They will also have used inventory on hand that has been pre-checked by a technician, and will typically offer maintenance services. A good store will guide you in the buying process, but remember: it will be YOUR piano, so make sure you don’t feel pressured. Make the process a fun one, and bring the whole family along. If children are involved in buying the piano, they will take more ownership of their lessons. Piano skills are something your kids will have with them for the rest of their lives. One of the keys to their success in piano is the quality of the instrument. Happy shopping! n

You Don’t Have to Live with

Urinary Leakage

It might surprise you that as many as four out of 10 women live with some form of urinary incontinence. Many women suffer in silence, mistakenly convinced urine leakage is an untreatable consequence of getting older, but urinary incontinence is easily treated. Uncontrolled loss of urine is something you should talk to your doctor about. Many simple, effective treatment options exist. There are two commons types of urine incontinence: stress incontinence and urge incontinence. Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) refers to bladder leakage that occurs when your bladder is physically stressed with activities like exercise, coughing or laughing. The resulting pressure on your bladder allows urine to escape through weakened pelvic floor muscles. Age, weight, pregnancy and vaginal childbirth all play a role in stress incontinence. Treatment options for stress incontinence include weight loss, physical therapy and sling surgery. Midurethral slings are a minimally invasive outpatient procedure that has revolutionized treatment of SUI. Midurethral slings stop leakage for more than 90 percent of patients. The surgery takes 10 minutes, only requires a half-inch incision and patients resume normal activities the next day. Patients with overactive bladder (OAB), also known as urge frequency syndrome, feel an urgent, immediate need to use the bathroom. If the focus of your day is the bathroom and you know where every bathroom is located around town, this may be a sign that you’ve been experiencing OAB. There is

44 |

November 2017 | thehoodmagazine.com

no known cause of OAB, but aging, diabetes and smoking can all play a factor in developing this condition. A tiered approach of care is used to treat OAB. Simple changes that you can make include avoiding food irritants and watching how much you drink and when. If lifestyle changes don’t alleviate your symptoms, there are medications to control the bladder. Medications are effective for about 50 percent of patients. Other options exist for patients that have not been helped by medication. There are a number of effective, simple treatments, including an office bladder injection of Botox®, a bladder pacemaker and a form of acupuncture. Additional options may be available if you’ve spoken with your doctor and have been told there are no other treatments for you. Clinical trials offer the latest in medical advancements for urinary incontinence. They are the safest and fastest way to discover new treatments and help improve health care for future generations of women. If you feel you have no other options, consider taking part in a clinical trial. n

Everyone Can be Crafty

51

Looking for some holiday craft ideas but have no idea where to start? Inspiration comes from all kinds of places, including household items. Our inspiration for these crafts comes from those things we have in the house like clothespins, incomplete puzzles, mismatched plates and candy.Try these kid friendly crafts to jumpstart your imagination with household supplies: Reindeer Friends. Try making reindeer from old clothespins. Supplies for them include googly eyes, pom poms for a nose, pipe cleaners for antlers, ribbon to hang with and glue. Want to try something a little different? Use a few extra clothespins and some popsicle sticks to make their bodies. Candy Crafts. You can make the reindeer out of candy canes too! Use old candy that’s gone stale from last year or the leftover Halloween sweets. Try building Santa’s train with lifesavers for the engine and mints for wheels. Cut out paper snowflake templates and glue smarties or mints in the patterns. Puzzle Decorations. From ornaments to door wreaths, old puzzles can make gorgeous decorations. Supplies include a puzzle, paint and hot glue. Paint the puzzle pieces then hot glue them together for the base ring. Then put a layer of glue on top of the base to begin adding more pieces. Repeat until the wreath is as thick as you like.

(Credit to DazzleWhileFrazzled.com for the gorgeous example of a wreath below.) Tiered Platter. This craft makes a great housewarming gift for those holiday parties. First, get plates that go together and candlesticks or glasses with different heights. These need to support weight but still look nice. Start with the largest plate and use hot glue or super glue to attach the tallest candlestick on top of it. Let that dry, then glue the unattached end of the candlestick to the bottom of the second plate. Then repeat the process for the next candlestick and plate. Just want a cake stand? Glue the bottom of a strong glass to the underside of a cake plate. (Photo credit to Anna Wu’s blog, annawu.com.) Most craft supplies can be found at thrift stores or dollar stores if you don’t already have them at home. Visit local craft stores for quality art materials like paints and brushes to add some flair to your projects. Want more craft ideas? Search “DIY gifts” on Pinterest to see what you can find! n

Some over-the-counter products you encounter might include whitening toothpastes, gels on strips or in trays and mouthwashes. The effectiveness of the different products may vary. For example, whitening toothpastes generally just help to remove surface stains on the teeth using a gentle polishing action. A gel, whether it is on a strip or a tray, generally will have peroxide to penetrate deeper in to the tooth to remove stains within the tooth. A mouthwash will help to dissolve surface stains, not penetrating the tooth. With the supervision and recommendation of a dentist, these products can be used safely. To ensure you are using the safest and most effective tooth whitening system, it’s recommended you consult with your dentist first. This is especially important if you have multiple dental restorations or have extremely dark teeth. Your dentist will do a thorough exam, and recommend certain products based on the findings of this exam. You should not whiten your teeth if you have untreated decay or active gum disease.

parent

Teeth whitening has become a very popular treatment among patients. When you walk down the dental aisle of your local store, you’ll notice many options to help you whiten your teeth. With so many over-the-counter options, you may wonder if they are safe and effective. Some common side effects patients will report include tooth sensitivity and soft tissue irritation. This can occur more often if the trays or strips do not fit well and if the products are used more often than recommended. If symptoms do occur, stop using the product, and the symptoms should subside within a few days. If they persist, visit with your dentist.

53

Once you have achieved your ideal whiteness, there are a few things you can do to maintain the color without having to continuously whiten. Avoid surface staining products such as coffee, tea, dark soda or red wine. Smoking is known to quickly cause staining, so this will be another great reason to quit! Great oral hygiene will not only clean food and plaque off teeth, but also helps to minimize the ability for surface stains to accumulate. Consult with your dentist before you start whitening and follow the recommendations of your dentist and you should be able to safely and effectively whiten your teeth. n

by Filly Flair

One of the easiest ways to plan your family photo outfits is to pick one outfit and coordinate from there. Try to avoid matching. For example; you don’t want everyone in your photo wearing the same color. Try to find an outfit with multiple tones and pull out accent colors that coordinate. You’ll also want to take into consideration the comfort of the clothing. Make sure you and your kids feel good in what you’re wearing. Don’t forget to relax. Planning for the perfect photo session can be stressful. You will value capturing the real life moments when you look back at the images.

parent

Soon you’ll be stuffing all those envelopes with your holiday photo cards. It’s time to start coordinating your picture perfect outfits. If you’ve already taken your holiday photos, you can still put these helpful tips to use for those photo ops over the holidays. If you’re not a formal family, pass on the formal settings and poses. Let the photographer capture your family interacting by snapping natural photos.

55

Accessories can make all the difference. Once you pick your clothing, accessorize. Scarves, sweaters, necklaces and vests are a good option. No matter what you choose to wear, just remember to have fun and be yourself. Your photos will be cherished by your family and extended family for many years to come. n

Farm and Garden Harvest

57

With Vonda and Ken Schulte

Harvest is when farmers and gardeners alike enjoy the results of their labor. We checked in with our dynamic gardening/farming duo Ken and Vonda Schulte from Geddes to find out how their crops and garden produce fared. They also talked about harvest plans and Vonda shared a tip on how to make preserving gardenfresh produce a snap. Q: What was the growing season like on your farm? Vonda: This year, things started off slow. After planting, it didn’t rain for a long time. The ground was hard and most of the seeds didn’t germinate. I had to replant. We had rain in August, so the weeds popped up. My garden looks like a jungle right now. Every year is different. It can be frustrating, but I try to learn from it and do something different next year. Mother Nature is always in control. Ken: It was very hot and dry in June and July, which slowed corn pollination and kernel growth. When rains came in August, it helped our soybean plants form and fill pods, so they look good now.

Overall crop growth is behind, so we’ll start harvest a little later than usual. Q: What types of pests did you experience and how did you manage them? Vonda: Squash beetles. They’re nasty. They burrow into the plant, kill it and move to the next variety. I don’t like to use pesticides unless necessary, so next year I’ll plant my squash in a raised bed with different soil. That should keep them from coming back. Ken: Kochia (weed) was a big problem in our fields. We sprayed pesticides, but the dry weather means they didn’t work well. Grasshoppers were also an issue, but I just sprayed the border around the affected fields with some insecticide. My sprayer is equipped with technology that keeps me from overlapping pesticide applications. I only like to spray when necessary so the technology helps a lot. Q: When do you harvest crops and how long will it take? Does anyone help you? Vonda: I plant and harvest fruits and vegetables all the time. Lettuce, radishes and spinach like cool temperatures and only take six weeks to grow. I pick those in May, then plant a second round in September. Next up are potatoes, string beans and broccoli in the middle of the summer. Then it’s peppers, tomatoes and celery in early fall. Brussels sprouts and sweet potatoes are last.

They like a freeze; it makes them sugary. Onions, herbs, beets and carrots can be harvested throughout the season.

B

Ken: My brother-in-law and neighbor help me. Typically, harvest begins during the first week in October. If the weather cooperates and we don’t have to repair any equipment, we finish in 30 days. Q: How do you prep your garden and fields for winter? Vonda: I clean it up by pulling all the plants out. Then I amend or improve the soil and cover with peat moss and leaves. In the spring, it’s ready for me to dig in. I don’t till up the soil; tilling just makes weeds.

BBQ Pork MAC & CHEESE by South Dakota Pork

Ingredients

• 1 (18-oz) bottle barbeque sauce, any variety or preference • 12 ounces elbow macaroni, or another small pasta

Bring a large pot of heavily salted water to a boil over high heat. Add the pasta and cook according to package directions. Reserve 1/2 cup of the pasta cooking water and drain the pasta.

• 1 tablespoon olive oil

Return the pot to the stove over low heat and add the olive oil. Once the oil is warm, add the onion, season with salt and cook until golden brown, about 5-7 minutes. Stir in the half and half. When the mixture just begins to simmer, add the cheese and whisk until smooth.

eats

• 2-3 pounds pork shoulder, cut into three pieces

59

• 1/2 red onion, finely chopped • 3/4 cups half & half • 1 1/2 cups fontina cheese, shredded (substitute: white cheddar) • salt and pepper to taste

Directions Place the pieces of pork shoulder and barbeque sauce into the slow cooker. Cover and place on low heat for 8 hours. After 8 hours, using two forks, shred the pork while it’s still in the slow cooker. Once shredded, let it rest with the remaining BBQ sauce.

CRUSHED CRACKER PORK Directions Combine egg, steak sauce and garlic powder in a shallow dish. Place crushed crackers in another shallow dish. Cut tenderloin crosswise into 1/2-inch-thick slices. Pound or flatten slices with the heel of your hand to 1/4-inch thickness. Dip each slice first into egg mixture, then cracker crumbs, turning to coat. Heat one tablespoon of oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat until hot. Add half of pork slices and cook 4 to 5 minutes per side or until browned. Repeat with remaining oil and pork slices (or use two skillets at one time).

Once the cheese has melted, add the pasta and stir to coat. If the macaroni and cheese seems thick, add a few tablespoons of the reserved pasta water and stir to combine. Taste and season with additional salt as needed. Evenly distribute the pasta to 6 serving bowls and add a serving of the shredded BBQ pulled pork on top of the pasta and serve. Reserve the additional pulled pork for leftovers.

The holiday season is upon us and while you’re likely planning for all those guests who will arrive, you might also consider some updates to make your guests feel more comfortable in your home. going with a frameless glass look one that coordinates with anything. Keep the width of your vanity in mind when selecting a mirror. In most instances, it should not exceed the width of the vanity.

1. Upgrade your toilet seat. Is your toilet seat chipped, cracked or discolored? Is it always shifting an inch to the right or left when you take a seat? (Annoying!) Or perhaps you purchased a cheap wooden one a long time ago and it’s time to upgrade. In addition to sturdier plastics and more polished looks, some toilet seats have features that will make you wonder, “Why didn’t I think of that before?” Lighted seats, potty training seats and bidet washing seats are all available today.

5. Swap the handles on your vanity. Not everyone wants to replace the entire vanity to achieve a look that’s in style. The easiest way to update your vanity is by replacing the handles. Find pieces that match or complement the other hardware in your bathroom.

2. Replace your bathroom faucet. Bathroom faucets come in all shapes, sizes, and finishes these days. Grime builds up, finishes rub off, and colors go out of style when it comes to faucets. With a variety of finishes and designs to choose from, it can be a quick way to update the look of your lavatory. Choose something trendy, like oil rubbed bronze, or opt for something that pairs nicely with the other hardware in your bathroom. 3. Brighten up your bathroom with a new light bar. Updated lighting will impact how everything in your bathroom looks. Transform a small or low-light area to a welcoming room with proper illumination.

home

There are many ways to make small updates in your bathroom that won’t break the bank. These small improvements will make a big impact on your visitors this holiday season.

61

You can also take your bathroom re-fresh a step further by painting your vanity. If you do this, be sure to use quality paint made for moist environments. You’ll also want to ensure you’re doing this with a sturdy vanity. Not all vanities are created equal. And because lowquality vanities are more often more susceptible to water damage, you’ll have to use your best judgment on whether or not to replace it, or paint it. n
