welcome

Welcome to our Holiday Issue!

The weather is changing and our family is getting excited for the snow to fall and the holiday season to be upon us (we are ok if that isn’t until mid-December). One of our favorite family traditions is cutting down a Christmas tree the day after Thanksgiving and decorating the whole house. Make sure to watch our Facebook page and share your favorite holiday traditions with us too! If you are just starting to work on your holiday list or haven’t even thought about it, don’t worry we have you covered! We will have all our holiday gift guide listings on our website, with links to purchase them for the last-minute shoppers. The one thing I love about our gift guide is that all of the items are from local businesses. We have options for toys and experiences (the gift that keeps on giving). If you are looking to do a new tradition this year, try getting a membership somewhere as a family. It will be a gift you can enjoy all year! The holiday photoshoot was so much fun to do with the kids…did I mention full of CHAOS too?! The kids looked so cute in the holiday clothes. Special thanks to Julie Prairie Photography and Child’s Play Toys for helpings us out with this photoshoot. Did you see our new Mom Tip section in the last issue? I am excited for you to meet the moms in this issue! Make sure to hop on Facebook for Mom Tip Monday and share your Mom Tips too! Holiday Season means it’s time for Santa sightings and lots of holiday events…did you know there are so many events for the Holiday season in our area? Make sure to check out the ones we have listed in print, but for a list to keep you busy every weekend in November, check out thehoodmagazine.com. Make sure to search Christmas in the Calendar section to help find them faster. Happy Holidays!

New!

MOM T IP of the Month We know moms are looking for new tips and ideas. We reached out to our panel of moms we work with and asked them to give us a tip or trick to share with you. Meet our moms for the month of November.

Name: Laura Kattenberg Number of kids: 4 Kids’ Ages: 15, 13, 7, 5 Your Job: Household Management Spouse’s Name: Derek

1

Your Mom Tip: To make these, core and slice an apple. Use a fruit dip as “frosting” and tint it green with some food coloring. You can use a little icing to make a bow on your wreath and a few sprinkles add the perfect finishing touch!

We have a white board in the kitchen that we use to plan out what we are having for supper for the week. This helps with knowing what to have in the house, what we may need to have thawed, etc. We also include whose chore day it is. This person is in charge of the dishwasher and the trash for the day.

Inspiring Kids in the Community

Donnie Donnie Stoltz aims to give every kid a chance to play sports. Donnie, a sixteen-year-old from Sioux Falls, owns and operates Donnie’s Closet with his mom. Started in 2015, Donnie’s Closet collects and gives away gently used sports equipment to anyone that asks. Donnie’s Closet is a branch of Project Donnie, which Donnie started when he was eight years old. “I was watching CBS Sunday Morning with my mom. One of the segments was on a man who started an organization to help people in his hometown. I looked at my mom and said, ‘We should do that,’” Donnie said. “She agreed and we started Project Donnie.” Through Project Donnie, Donnie has volunteered at various community events. He packed meals for Kids Against Hunger, collected and delivered kids’ clothes to Children’s Inn and St. Francis House, sold bracelets to raise money for the Hawthorne Elementary Playground that burned down in 2015, and packed hygiene kits for Church on the Street. Project Donnie expanded to create Donnie’s Closet when Donnie was twelve. One of Donnie’s friends was unable to purchase sports equipment, which gave Donnie the idea to start Donnie’s Closet.

Donnie and his mom are the main volunteers for Donnie’s Closet, but his friends have gotten involved with collection events too! Donnie says that the best part of the process is when he delivers the sports equipment to people. He enjoys seeing the looks on kids’ faces when they receive their sports equipment. The deliveries are mainly in Sioux Falls, but Donnie has delivered to people from surrounding towns when they are able to meet him in Sioux Falls. A baseball player himself, Donnie understands the demands of being on a sports team. “I’m going to keep doing [Donnie’s Closet] as long as I can, but I’ll probably pass it on to another kid who feels the need to give back,” Donnie said. Thank you for your great work in Sioux Falls, Donnie! You inspire us to stay active in our community.

Gift Giving Tips When our triplets were babies, they enjoyed playing with the boxes, wrapping paper and bows more than their actual gifts. As the years progressed, they loved getting new Little People sets, Thomas the Train tracks and eventually numerous Lego sets. As we have entered the tween and teen years, gift giving has changed dramatically. The days of pouring over giant toy catalogs have slowed, except for drooling over the $500+ Lego sets!

Make a list. Not just of things they’d like to receive but also of things that are helpful. What type of gaming console do they have? What are their favorite colors as well as clothing/shoe sizes?

We’ve always tried to stay ‘reasonable’ when it comes to gift giving. Something you want, something you need, something to wear and something to read has usually been a recipe we’ve followed.

Create a gift that’s personalized. It’s always special to receive something with your name on it. Snag their phone or iPod and create a photo album of their year!

Our kids use their own money to buy gifts for their siblings and they often team up together to get a larger gift for one another. We’ve let them set the spending amount and it’s fun to see what they select for each other. A few years ago, we decided not to get our kids one big gift and go skiing together in the Black Hills as a family. Our annual family experience is now their request each year and we’ve enjoyed the time together on the slopes and, of course, the hot tub!

TIPS FOR GIFT GIVING: Pay attention during the year to the things they mention they would like or need. Christmas shopping doesn’t have to be done in the few weeks before Christmas. If you went on vacation or attended an event or concert, purchase an item without them knowing (or order one later) that can be given at Christmas.

16 |

November 2019 | thehoodmagazine.com

Give an experience. A concert, a trip, a night at a hotel for swimming, tickets to their favorite sporting event or even just a visit downtown can all be memories to be cherished for years to come. Give to others. We have loved making the Operation Shoe Box gifts for kids, as well as donating gifts to the Children’s Home Society. One of the greatest gifts we can give our kids is teaching them the blessing of being generous to others. l

7 Tips for Safe Winter Fun! When the snow falls and the kids head outside for some winter fun, here are a few tips to keep them safe and warm! 1. L ayers – Wear layers to guard against the cold. A light outer layer, or shell, is great to protect against wind and water, while keeping heat in. Layer over a warm sweatshirt and long sleeve shirt. 2. W ool Socks – Invest in a pair of good wool socks that will wick moisture away while keeping your feet warm. Multiple layers of socks can restrict blood flow and make you sweat, which gets trapped and chills your feet. 3. S unscreen – Don’t forget to apply sunscreen, even in the winter! The sun reflects off the white snow and can burn exposed skin. 4. S afety Gear – When enjoying outdoor recreation in the winter like skiing, snowboarding or hockey, make sure you have properly fitting safety gear, including a helmet, wrist guards and pads. 5. C heck the Weather – Be cautious when temps drop below zero. Dress warm for low wind chills. 6. T ake Breaks – Warm up inside with a hot cocoa break when playing in cold weather. 7. H ave Fun – And don’t forget to have fun! Get outside, exercise and enjoy the fresh air this winter. l

Co-Parenting During the Holidays

The weather is turning colder, and the leaves are starting to fall. The children are starting the lists to Santa and waiting for the first real snow fall. While the kiddos may be excited for the excitement of the holidays, you may be feeling less enthusiastic about the upcoming holiday season if you are a parent who has to share holiday time. Developing a shared parenting schedule during the holiday season can be hard. However, there are a variety of ways each parent can have meaningful holiday time with the children.

40 |

November 2019 | thehoodmagazine.com

Below are a few tips to consider:

1. A lternate holidays every other year. Agree to assign specific holidays to each parent for even years and then swap the holidays in odd years. For example, Mom has Christmas Day every even numbered year and Dad has Christmas Day every odd numbered year. With this arrangement, each parent gets to spend one of the big holidays with the children. 2. D ivide the holiday in half. You can divide the day of the holiday so that your children spend part of the day with each parent. With this type of arrangement, Dad could spend Christmas morning with the children and Mom could spend Christmas evening with the children. This arrangement does require planning and coordination and it works best if you live in proximity. 3. S chedule a holiday twice. Who doesn’t love to have two rounds of turkey and two rounds of present openings! You can schedule time for each parent to celebrate a holiday with your children. For example, one parent can celebrate Christmas with the children on December 25th and the other parent on the 30th. Each year the parents can alternate the days they celebrate the holiday. 4. A ssign fixed holidays. Each parent celebrates the same holidays with the children every year. For this option, Mom could spend Thanksgiving Day every year with the children and Dad could spend Christmas Day every year with the children. If parents have different holidays that they think are important, this is a good way for each parent to prioritize a day that is special to them. 5. F ind a solution that works best for your children. Your holiday schedule can be whatever works best for your family. There is no one size fits all. It is about co-parenting and coming to an agreement that benefits your children and allows everyone to make happy holiday memories. Any of these combinations can be used to divide and share holiday time. The most important thing is to create a holiday arrangement that allows your children to make memories, enjoy family traditions, and spend quality time with both parents. l

Black Friday & Cyber Monday Shopping Helpful tips to make the most of holiday shopping

The holiday season is approaching and with that comes the biggest shopping days of the year, Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Every year, in the days following Thanksgiving, thousands of shoppers hit the stores to find the perfect gifts. To make the most of your shopping adventures, we offer you the following advice:

1. M ake a budget and follow it. Know how much you can afford to spend and stick to that amount. Use cash to avoid overspending.

2. J ust like Santa, you gotta have a list. Write down everything you plan to shop for and put them in order of importance. That way, as soon as you enter a store, you can focus on finding those items first.

4. S hop with a friend. Not only is it fun, but you can work together and find your gifts faster. While you hunt for items in one section of the store, your friend can search for items in another section. 5. S ign up to get alerts about various products. There are websites, like bestblackfriday.com, dealnews.com, and theblackfriday.com, that specifically leak Black Friday ads, giving you an early advantage. 6. U se online price comparison tools. Google shopping, PriceGrabber, and Shopzilla allow you to compare prices at various locations without having to drive all over town. 7. U se loyalty programs. Many retailers have loyalty programs that offer sales and promotions to their members first and even earn rewards on their purchases. 8. F ollow your favorite brands on social media. Many retailers will offer special deals on their social media platforms and reward customers who like or follow them with special alerts to discounts. 9. C heck timing. Some Cyber Monday deals are for a certain window of time, offering the steepest discounts to early morning shoppers. Check deals before that Monday to know what time to shop for the best deals. 10. Look for deals at brick-and-mortar stores on Cyber Monday. If a store’s Black Friday sales were lower than expected, many will offer deals to lure Cyber Monday shoppers. After all that shopping, consider participating in Giving Tuesday, which is celebrated the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving. It’s an international movement that encourages everyone to donate their time, resources, talents, and money to helping others. You can get information and updates about the movement by going to www. givingtuesday.org. l

Giggle from Ethan A. I went to the gas station to get a pop (you know roughly $1) and let my son hand the lady at the register a $20 and he told her to “keep the change”. I had to quickly explain it doesn’t normally work that way. - Submitted by Ethan’s mom Sara

Joke by Ian S.

Why does a duck eat feathers? Answer: To cover its butt quack.

3. G et out early. The earlier you get to the store, the better your chances are of finding the popular items in stock.

Giggle from Teryk M. I have 15mo old identical twins. My 4yo can’t tell them apart. One of them split her eyebrow open last Friday. Since then...she’s been known as the “broken baby!” - Submitted by Teryk’s mom Chelsey

health/wellness by Dr. Christine Duncan, Lanpher Chiropractic

De-Stress this Holiday Season This time of year is always stressful - you try to plan ahead, get some shopping done early and do meal prep, but there is still a lot to do. Instead of getting run down, stressed or irritable, take a proactive approach to keep yourself better balanced this year with acupuncture and a natural nutritional program designed just for you. Acupuncture is one of the easiest ways to support your body from the inside out. It is effective in relieving stress and allows your body to cope with stress better daily. I bet some of you are thinking that getting needles stuck in you sounds stressful, but this is a common misconception about acupuncture. Sometimes a needle in a particularly sensitive spot will hurt for just a split second, but overall, acupuncture is extremely relaxing. Many needles you won’t even feel or notice. Most pa-

tients reach a meditative state during their session and some even fall asleep. The protocol for allowing your body to handle stress more efficiently is done mainly by placing needles in your ears. It is extremely effective and helps with the symptoms of depression and anxiety at the same time. Some patients even decide to handle their seasonal depression solely through acupuncture sessions, instead of turning

health/wellness to medications to help them through the winter months. There is also an acupuncture protocol that can help increase energy, which can be performed at the same time as the stress treatment. The protocol will help to eliminate toxins and excess water retention from the body and increase energy in the process. The procedure is simple and only requires a few needles to be placed inside the ankles. Making sure your body is getting the correct nutritional support during the holiday season is also important. B vitamins and adrenal gland support are the first things that should be looked at to help you survive the holidays stress-free. Vitamin B in all its forms is a natural energy source for your body, but the excessive sugar intake during the holiday season can deplete your body’s reserves of this great vitamin. Therefore, we need to supplement our normal diets with extra B vitamins in order to have enough

energy and to stay happy and smiling. There are many different forms of B complex supplements you can take, so make sure to consult your chiropractor before deciding which brand or dosage is best for you. Your adrenal glands are also important in dealing with stress. There are specific nutritional supplements that can help aid the adrenal glands and support them to give you a much more relaxing and enjoyable holiday season. Adrenal support supplements, in combination with a good B complex vitamin, should be taken before the stress begins to make sure you don’t get run down or suffer from stress exhaustion. Everyone is different and how your body handles stress might need to be managed differently than others you know. Therefore it is important to consult a chiropractor who has nutritional training and is certified in acupuncture before beginning a new routine. Please enjoy this holiday season filled with friends, fun, celebration and less stress! l

lutter 10 Ways to Dec se your Hou

by Alexa DeVos for Once Upon a Child

Expectations when Selling In a perfect world, we would be able to sell items to others or back to stores and get the same amount of money that we had originally paid for our items. Unfortunately, when you walk around outside in a new pair of shoes, drive off the car lot with a new vehicle or your children use their fun new toys & books, the value begins to diminish. Here are some expectations to consider when considering reselling your items: •R esale Probability. The overall value of your items decreases as the use of the items increase. Therefore, simply understanding what you are selling and being able to come up with a resale price that is in the ballpark of what others who may be selling similar items at is essential. • S eason. Depending where you’re looking to sell your items – a retail store or in public avenues– you may have to pay attention to when you’re selling your items. For example, retail stores

are more likely to buy your winter gear in late summer or early fall, as this is the time they are looking to sell those kinds of items. • S urplus. Don’t be surprised if you are turned away. Most of the time, retail stores will be looking to buy items that are in demand. If you do a bit of research, however, several stores will post what they are asking for on their website. Often, bigger items, such as a baby bouncer, are more likely to be accepted; while items that the store has too much of, like baby onesies, are not as likely to be taken off your hands. l

Holidays and Traditions Starting Something New

Keeping up with life can be a bit difficult when a long list of to-do’s and events seem to be running you and your family’s days. However, taking a moment to just be with the family can prove to be a wonderful break in the busyness of our everyday routines. Sometimes, you might have to intentionally schedule in that moment, but this could also be the perfect time to start something exciting! Perhaps, a new tradition may be the fun break you and your family can look forward to? Traditions don’t have to be something huge and elaborate in order to make some good memories. They can be as simple as a change at the dining room table once a month or a little twist on a holiday meal. Here are a couple of ideas to get you started using just some loaves of bread and bits of dough:

•B read bowls. Is your family a big fan of sports? Grab some bread bowls and fill them with your favorite dips in preparation for the game! •B readsticks. Form dough for breadsticks into anything BUT sticks – such as flowers, pirate swords, and more! Add a bit of olive oil, garlic spread, or any other spread of your choice to create a tasty – and fun – treat.

•P izza. Shape pizza dough into a turkey, Christmas tree, football, or anything else you and your kids may be able to mix up! Don’t forget to use the pizza toppings for fun features like feathers and decorations! •H oliday treats. And if you’re looking for something without the kitchen prep and cleanup, there are any number of treats to choose from that you can bring straight home. From delicious pull-apart breads to pumpkin dessert loaves to Shtollen – a traditional fruit bread rolled in powdered sugar (and, if done the old-fashioned way, can take up to 30 hours to make!) – plenty of delicious options are available to choose from to kick-start a new tradition in the family. l

Take Charge

to make the holidays more enjoyable The holiday season can quickly become overwhelming and holiday cheer can get replaced with holiday stress. It can be tempting to try to fit in all the holiday traditions of your childhood, while also creating new memories with your children. Here are some tips to make this holiday season the most wonderful time of the year:

1. S tart early. If crowds on Black Friday aren’t your idea of a great shopping experience, try to buy your gifts throughout the year. You may even find better deals because you’re not bound to tight deadlines. If you start early enough, you can even wrap gifts before your kids are out of school on holiday break! 2. M ake a list. Lists are great for organizing your thoughts and tracking tasks to complete throughout the holiday season. You may want to keep a list of special groceries for baking or big family dinners. Lists are also great to help you know what gifts you want to buy so you don’t get sidetracked and end up busting your budget. It can be therapeutic to check off completed tasks. 3. T ake advantage of local services! Kidtopia and Child’s Play Toys in Sioux Falls allow your

56 |

children to write out their gift list and have a copy kept in the store. You also get a chance to check out the toys before approving the list so you can TRY to ensure that no unwanted drum sets make their way into your home! Shopping locally provides a chance to give unique gifts and help your community at the same time!

4. T ake some time for yourself. It is easy to over commit and get run down this time of the year. Whether you take a moment to enjoy a nice warm mug of hot chocolate or spend some unplugged time with your family; it’s important to make sure you stop and enjoy the little things that make this time of year so magical. You can’t pour from an empty cup. 5. S tay connected. The holidays can be a difficult time for people who may have lost loved ones or are experiencing tough life transitions. Remember that it is okay to seek out help, professional or otherwise. Some things in life are too big to handle alone. Be kind to yourself. l

Health Insurance Plan

5 questions to ask when Choosing a

Open enrollment season for health insurance is approaching, which means you’re about to embark on one of the biggest decisions you’ll make for your family—and your pocketbook. Shopping for health insurance can seem complex, but it doesn’t have to be confusing. To make the right call, you’ll need to understand what to look for in a plan so you can get the most for your money. We’re here to help. Keep these questions in mind as you consider your options:

1. W hat are my premiums? Your premiums are the fees you pay your insurance company to stay covered. Since this is a monthly expense, you’ll want to make sure the total amount fits into your budget. Remember to calculate premiums for covering a spouse and/or dependents, if that applies to you. 2. W hat are my deductible, copayments, coinsurance and out-of-pocket maximum? Unlike your premiums, you’ll only pay these expenses if you receive medical care. The key to choosing the right plan comes down to balancing your expected medical needs against what your monthly budget allows. It’s impossible to know for sure (life happens), but thinking back on your past few years of health needs can help you make a more informed decision. • Deductible: This is the amount of money you pay out-of-pocket to health care providers before your insurance company begins covering services. • Copayments: You pay this flat fee when you access health care services, like a doctor’s office visit. •C oinsurance: After your insurance kicks in (you’ve met your deductible, in other words),

58 |

November 2019 | thehoodmagazine.com

you’ll likely still be responsible for a percentage of the costs. This is coinsurance. •O ut-of-pocket maximum: After you reach your out-of-pocket maximum, your insurance company pays all of the costs for covered charges.

3. Is my doctor in the health plan’s network? If you have a family doctor you trust, make sure they’re in-network for any plan you’re considering. Your claims may be denied or paid at a lower level if you receive care from an out-ofnetwork provider. If you’re not sure, you can ask the insurance company. 4. A re my prescriptions covered under the plan? This is an important one, especially if you or someone in your family takes prescription medication on a regular basis. Some plans cover different prescription drugs than others, or pay more toward them. Doing a little research up front can save you money and stress. 5. W hat perks and discounts are available? More and more, insurance companies are focusing on services beyond just health insurance coverage. Under certain plans, you can access discounts on vision, dental, hearing, and even weight loss services and gym memberships. Depending on the number of people in your family and their health needs, these perks can add up quickly and make a huge difference in your monthly bottom line. l

Recycled Tire Swing The Perfect Holiday Gift

r Safety Tips fog n vi ri D r te in W

“Many old and worn-down tires can be used for different purposes well after they have served their time on a car,” said Olivia Schanafelt, spokesperson for Discount Tire. “Tires are a key aspect in many people’s lives and disposing or reusing them correctly can ensure our environment stays clean and safe.” With just a few steps and a large tree, you can create a gift that is long lasting and forever in style. Making a tire swing is not only easy and affordable, but it will also keep the kiddos entertained.

Step 1: Find an old or unwanted tire (preferably big for all the kids). Make sure the tire has been scrubbed and is squeaky clean. Step 2: Find a branch on a tree that’s sturdy and durable. Standard swings need at least nine feet from the tree branch to the ground. (The higher the tree branch, the higher the tire swing will swing.) Get a quality rope, approximately 50 feet, that won’t fray or break. Step 3: Find a drill (yes, power tools are necessary) and make a few holes at the tire’s base to avoid rainwater pooling into the tire.

While Christmas is known as the most wonderful time of the year, it can also be one of the most stressful times. This year, you can skip hectic shopping for the kids by getting the perfect gift – a recycled tire swing! Not only is a tire swing a great holiday gift to get your children outside, but it is also a terrific way to repurpose your old tires.

Step 4: Use a ladder to get near the tree branch. Be sure to have a friend hold the ladder steady. Then, place the rope over the tree branch and secure the end of the rope to the branch using a bowline, fisherman’s bend or a slip knot (do not use a square knot). Step 5: Tie the other end of the rope around the top part of the tire. Figure out how high off the ground you want the swing to be before making your knot. Trim off the excess rope if necessary. Step 6: Make sure to test the swing. Enjoy! l

LET'S GET YOU TAKEN CARE OF™

One of the more common domestic dynamics of any household is the unending tug of war over what is the agreed upon thermostat setting. It’s not one based on gender or age, but rather personal comfort preferences regarding individual running temps. You run hot, your significant other runs cold...and typically, a margin of a few degrees can be more controversial than a rare steak versus a well-done steak. The battle of the thermostat is more common than one might think…there’s a reason new cars come with dual climate control zones! For a moment, remove the human element and consider the wear and tear on your heating and cooling system. The roller coaster method of climate management is not recommended as it places a strain on the system, thereby incurring avoidable service costs and risking premature wear down. So, what is the best strategy for maintaining a household temperature that is bearable for both? We don’t take into consideration the kids or pets. This is purely an adult privilege in line with voting, drinking and swearing...the last one noticeably more prevalent when battling over the thermostat. First off, don’t take your mate’s conflicting temperature preference as a personal attack. Think more realistically. If you’re the one during the cold season that prefers the house be a Swedish sauna you have more options on how to achieve your preferred state of baked Alaska. If your house has a fireplace, be sure to keep a clean chimney and a supply of firewood. Also, there are items specifically invented for warming cold souls. They’re called sweaters, hoodies, wool socks, blankets and space heaters. If none of this is coaxing you to accommodate your overheating mate think about this...running the house hot COSTS MORE! Secondly, for a person who runs hot and is forced to live in a thermo-nuclear environment (“Oh my... 73 degrees is killing me!”) the options to cool off are few...constant visits to the garage, sticking your head in the freezer during commercial breaks and abandoning one’s clothing. If, as a hot head, you opt to go au naturale, please put on a coat when visiting the detached garage…there are freezing and overheated children around. A footnote predicated on the looming holidays...your guests will not appreciate the yo-yo approach of temperature management. Air temperature rises as the number of warm bodies increases. Throw in the ambient fireplace, ugly sweaters and an oven on overdrive and your cozy abode set at a pleasant 74 degrees suddenly becomes a sweat lodge. No one wants to see Uncle Benny’s flop sweat. Proactively drop the thermostat prior to your guests arriving. Again, easier to warm up than cool off and remember, better that cooler heads prevail. l
