Car Seats and the Cold Season

by Tiny Toes Showroom

The general rule when fastening a car seat belt is to tighten the belt until only one of your fingers can fit between the strap and your child’s collarbone. There have been numerous crash tests proving that bulky snowsuits are dangerous because the fluff condenses, and the baby can actually be propelled out of the car seat. Whenever you are checking to see if the cold weather attire you’ve dressed your baby in is still safe, tighten the seatbelt with her dressed how you prefer. Then take her out of the car seat, take off the fluffy coat, and put her back in. How much extra space do you have between the belt and her body? If you can now fit your fist in the gap, the coat is too fluffy and you need to find something else.

baby

If you’re like many parents, you worry about keeping your young child warm while also keeping him safe in his car seat. There are many options available when looking at bundling up little ones for the cold season.

11

Our recommendation to keep your baby safe and warm is as follows: Dress your child in light layers. Use clothing like warm pants, long sleeve shirts, socks, booties and a hat. Many parents add a thin, warm fleece jacket before strapping their baby into the infant seat. It’s also a good idea to wrap the baby in a light blanket. Additionally, you may wish to use a car seat cover to keep your baby warmer. There are many different car seat covers available for all different weather conditions. The cover will protect your child from the elements and help keep them warm as we head into the winter months. n

Age Appropriate Gifts Before you head out to start your holiday shopping, take an inventory of which toys you already have, which items your child has outgrown and the ones that can still be used. Children of all ages need a well-balanced assortment of toys as they grow. While toys may be expensive and take up room in your home, they’re essential to your child’s growth. There are many different toys geared toward your child’s development such as active play, manipulative play, make-believe play and creative play. As your child grows, you’ll gain a better understanding of what toys he or she likes. You’ll also figure out what you can add to their collection while adding to their development. Never ignore the labels on the products you’re buying. They’re in place for a reason. They take some of the guesswork out of choosing safe, appropriate toys for your child’s age. Each child is unique and develops at his or her own pace, however there are stages that are fairly predictable.

Toys are labeled based on four criteria: 1. Safety of the toy 2. Child’s physical capabilities 3. Child’s cognitive ability 4. Child’s interest It’s important to consider choking hazards when buying toys; it’s also important to know your child’s physical capabilities to make sure your child doesn’t get frustrated with a toy that may be too advanced for their age. Be especially careful when selecting toys for children under age three. Avoid toys with small parts that could be swallowed. Check that the eyes and noses of stuffed animals and dolls are securely fastened and that seams are well sewn. Knowing the basics of finding the right toy for your child’s age will help ensure your child is getting the most development out of the toy. You’ll also feel at ease knowing they toy is safe for your child’s age. n

Considering Traditions to Make the Most of Holiday Family Time

Most insurances and Medicaid accepted. Sliding fee scale available, with support from the United Way

November 2016 | thehoodmagazine.com

A plan, started now, can perhaps be your family’s best friend when it comes to maximizing your enjoyment of the holidays.

Building a holiday strategy shouldn’t be stressful; it can really incorporate a rich assortment of traditions – and perhaps include some that are traditions-to-be. Avera Certified Family Life Educator, Doniese Wilcox encourages planning and maybe more importantly, collaborating with the entire family to make the best decisions. “Sometimes we all need to stop and consider who a tradition appeals to – is it something we all cherish, or is it more or less for mom?” she said. “One way to make a tradition appealing to everyone is to stop and look at who enjoys it.” Wilcox said that’s families that decide together often get more out of this magic time of year. “Holiday traditions add security, bring a binding of community, excitement and also build values,” she said. “So it might be time to test the traditions you keep, and see if there’s room for new ones.” Many families spread their gift-giving over the course of the month of December. The side benefit is a more luxurious length of time in which receivers of gifts can show their appreciation, according to Wilcox. “Our family has developed a ‘Kids’ Crafts’ event for St. Nicholas Day, which is early in December,” she said. “Families

can also consider giving traditions, such as going through old toys and finding ones that can be given away. It is a great way to instill thoughtfulness.” The trappings of the traditional meal can be customized to make everyone fit in a little better. What’s mom’s favorite food in the Thanksgiving feast and why? Finding and sharing family stories can be just that simple. “Storytelling is an amazing tool, and it can be more than just a humorous tale or episode. In many cases, it can teach a lesson or have a moral,” she said. “Part of the reason we love the holidays is to have that time with those we love, to talk and listen and be there with them.” Gratitude is a big part of the traditions of both Thanksgiving and Christmas, and writing in a gratitude journal, or helping younger children make “gratitude videos” using technology to make another possible “new” tradition you might try, Wilcox said. “Our friends use an inexpensive vinyl tablecloth. It comes out for the holidays every year, and everyone is asked to add something to it they are grateful for, and they take Sharpies and draw or write,” Wilcox said. “It’s like watching old home movies or slideshows – it’s just a great way to keep connections vital.” No matter how you celebrate, you can bring the family closer together with a dash of planning, a bit of tradition and plenty of collaborative creativity. n

For years to come you will have a great holiday frame and a sweet memory of them when they were young. This would also make a great grandparent gift. Instructions: Glue photo or item to lid. Add water and add glitter (some like to add A LOT of glitter). Seal up the jar. Using a little hot glue around the rim is not a bad idea for an extra tight seal. Decorate your snow globe with festive ribbon. Give it a good shake and enjoy. VACATION PLANNING

All Inclusive Resorts

What is an all-inclusive resort? Why in the world would you ever take your family to an all-inclusive resort? First of all, there are no actual true all-inclusive resorts in the United States, so to get to one, you will most likely travel to popular beach vacation destinations such as Mexico, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Bahamas, St. Lucia,Turks & Caicos and many others. It’s an exceptional cultural experience as well! All-inclusive resorts are just that, the moment you arrive, everything is included, things like: • F ood (numerous restaurant, buffet and poolside options) • Beverages • Entertainment (throughout the day and night) • 24-hour room service It also includes land sports and supervised activities for little ones. It may be awkward to think about leaving your kids for a few hours to enjoy a nice dinner on the beach or quiet time by the pool, but once you see the kids club facility, you’ll find that most are supervised by certified nannies. You’ll feel good knowing your kids are

One of my personal favorites are the Hard Rock All Inclusive Hotels, located in Cancun, Riviera Picture Perfec Maya and Puerto t Wedding (Puerto Valla rta, Mexico) Vallarta in Mexico as well as Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. At these resorts, you not only receive the all-inclusive amenities, you also get resorts credits

Play Therapy Provides

Life Skills for Kids

If you’ve ever watched children play for any length of time, you know it involves imagination, creativity and thought. When children play, they rehearse what it’s like being grown up. They confront the issues of adult life as they appear to a child. Whether you realize it or not, a child’s ability to play is an important stage in growth and development. Some children can run into problems at different times in life. Examples of concerns might be difficulties in school (behavior or academics), fighting with siblings, lying, or a major change like a move or a divorce. In these situations, parents may reach for extra help to resolve these issues. One possible avenue of help could be play therapy.

Play therapy can be useful in helping children cope with:

Play therapy is a way of working with children utilizing toys, games and other methods of play to help them resolve issues they are having in other areas of their lives. There are therapists who are specifically trained to use play in therapy with children and even adults. When a child examines a problem in a play therapy session, with the aid of the therapist, a solution can often be found. A play session is a place to try out new ideas and behaviors. It’s also a place to use toys, puppets, a sand tray or games to act out troubling situations and find ways to handle them.

• Practicing responsibility for behaviors

• Identifying and managing emotions • Building self-image and confidence • Learning social skills • Accepting change in all parts of life Therapists who use play in therapy can be found in clinics, schools, private practice and hospitals. In some communities, therapists may come into the home and work with the family utilizing play therapy techniques to improve family functioning. Play therapy can be a method of helping a child cope better with the world they live in, using something that is not only fun, but essential. n November 2016 | thehoodmagazine.com

Christmas Gift Savings This season brings about many beautiful decorations, delicious foods and many special times with family. Unfortunately, it’s also is a time of year commonly known for draining your bank account. According to The American Research Group, the average family will spend over $800 this year on Christmas gifts. That number, while still being high from my perspective, begins to make sense when you take into account the number of gifts needed to include immediate and extended family members, close friends, co-workers, neighbors and even pets! It becomes a real challenge each year to find gifts for everyone in your life while still maintaining a reasonable budget for your family. When you are out shopping this season, there are quite a few things you can do to save money as you search for those perfect gifts. Here are some of my favorite ways to save! Make it Yourself - If it can be made at home and it will save you money, why not make it yourself? You can learn how to make just about anything if you do one quick internet search. Additionally, a DIY gift adds a little extra sentiment, having it be a one-of-a-kind gift made just for them! Framed Photos - We live in the age of photography! We all love to see images that remind us of good times we’ve shared with others. Photo prints are affordable and likely to be cherished by anyone

who receives them. Did you go on a trip with a friend this year? Give them a framed print of the place you visited, or gather groups of images from the trip and place them into a photo book or album. Hobby Gifts - Consider the hobbies of the person you are buying for. Does your friend love to write? Pick up some pretty stationary and some stamps. If your budget allows, add in a few nice pens and her favorite candy! Does your cousin love concerts? Find them a good scrapbook or photo album to put all of their mementos in. Snail Mail - Can’t afford many gifts this year? You can still show your appreciation and love to your friends and family. When is the last time you mailed someone a letter? You could make it a card, postcard, a letter, or just a little note of appreciation on some nice stationery. If you have a few dollars to spend, include a favorite snack or candy with your letter. Free Shipping Day - For all of those last minute shoppers, hundreds of companies offer free shipping on December 16th of this year! Visit freeshippingday.com for a list of the participating stores. n

Understanding GMOs by Dawn Scheier, CommonGround Volunteer In our country, we are blessed with a plethora of choices when it comes to food. GMO, non-GMO, organic, nonorganic, grass-fed, grain-fed, vegan, vegetarian. Whatever your preference, you can find it. The best part about all these choices is no matter what you choose, you can rest assured it’s a safe choice for you and your family. To help you understand GMOs, it helps to know what makes a food or crop genetically modified and what that means for us. The term “genetically modified organisms” doesn’t mean there are foreign organisms injected into your food. The “organism” refers to a cell. All food has cells, which are no longer living by the time they are harvested.

Genetic modification is basically a faster version of selective breeding, something farmers have done for centuries. Depending on the desired outcome, a gene is added to the crop from bacteria, a virus or a different variety of fruit or vegetable. That tiny change in the crop’s DNA results in resistance to insects or non-browning apples or potatoes. GMOs also have the potential to improve lives beyond non-browning apples. Golden Rice is a variety of rice genetically modified to increase levels of vitamin A. This variety has great implications for people in 122 countries affected by vitamin A deficiency, which can lead to blindness. Genetic modification also rescued a whole papaya crop from dying out. 20 years ago, the papaya crop in Hawaii was almost wiped out due to ringspot virus until one scientist had an idea. He took a gene from one part of the virus and applied it to the papaya’s DNA, making it immune and saving the entire fruit population for Hawaiian farmers. Over the years, farmers – myself included – have seen the benefits of growing GMO crops and have adopted them

at rapid rates. Our family started planting them as soon as they became available. They make it easier to protect crops from the elements and predators like insects and weeds. They help us to use fewer resources like water or chemicals. As a farmer, I take my responsibility to grow safe, healthy food very seriously. As a mother, I am confident in the science that says GMO foods are a safe and nutritious choice for my family. Hungry for Truth and CommonGround are great local resources that focus on the connection between food and farming in an unbiased way, supporting everyone’s right to choose the best options for themselves and their families. Better yet, you can reach out to a local farmer and talk to them about why they do what they do. Everybody eats food. Learning more about what goes on before it hits grocery shelves can help all of us make informed decisions and a better connection to the food on our plates. Apple AND

WHITE CHEDDAR TURNOVERS

Ingredients • 2 medium golden delicious apples, peeled, halved, cored, cut into 1/2inch cubes • 1 1/2 cup white cheddar cheese, loosely packed, coarsely grated • 1/4 cup pure maple syrup • 1/4 cup English walnut pieces • 1/4 cup dried cranberries • Pinch of salt • One 17.3 ounce package frozen puff pastry (two sheets), thawed • 1 large egg, beaten with 1 teaspoon water to blend, for glaze

Directions Toss apples, cheese, syrup, walnuts, cranberries and salt in medium bowl to blend. Cover and chill, up to 2 hours. Position one rack in the top third and one rack in the bottom third of the oven and preheat to 400 degrees. Line two large rimmed baking sheets with parchment; set aside. Roll out one puff pastry sheet on lightly floured surface to 11-inch square. Using a 5- to 5-1/2-inch plate or bowl as template, cut out four rounds from pastry. Transfer pastry rounds to one baking sheet, spaced apart. Repeat with second pastry sheet, placing rounds on second baking sheet. Spoon about 1/2 cup of filling into half of each pastry round, dividing all of filling among rounds.

56 |

Brush edges of pastry lightly with some of egg glaze. Fold the plain pastry half over filling; press on edges to seal and enclose filling completely, then press tines of fork along pastry edge to create tight seal. Using tip of small sharp knife, cut two 1/2-inch long slits in top of crust on each turnover. Brush tops with egg glaze, then sprinkle with sugar.

Bake turnovers until crusts are puffed and golden, and juices are bubbling through slits in crusts, about 15 to 18 minutes. Carefully run metal spatula under turnovers to loosen and transfer to racks to cool slightly. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Update Your Bathroom for the Holidays

The holiday season is upon us and while you’re likely planning for all those guests who will arrive, you might also consider some updates to make your guests feel more comfortable in your home. There are many ways to make small updates in your bathroom that won’t break the bank. These small improvements will make a big impact on your visitors this holiday season. 1. Upgrade your toilet seat. Is your toilet seat chipped, cracked or discolored? Is it always shifting an inch to the right or left when you take a seat? (Annoying!) Or perhaps you purchased a cheap wooden one a long time ago and it’s time to upgrade. In addition to sturdier plastics and more polished looks, some toilet seats have features that will make you wonder, “Why didn’t I think of that before?” Lighted seats, potty training seats and bidet washing seats are all available today. 2. Replace your bathroom faucet. Bathroom faucets come in all shapes, sizes, and finishes these days. Grime builds up, finishes rub off, and colors go out of style when it comes to faucets. With a variety of finishes and designs to choose from, it can be a quick way to update the look of your lavatory. Choose something trendy, like oil rubbed bronze, or opt for something that pairs nicely with the other hardware in your bathroom. 3. Brighten up your bathroom with a new light bar. Updated lighting will impact how everything in your bathroom looks. Transform a small or low-light area to a welcoming room with proper illumination. Whether you’re looking for new shape bulbs or to shine more light over the mirror, lighting can make or break the functionality of your bathroom. Men like shaving in a

well-lit space, just like women prefer to apply makeup in a bright, clean environment. 4. Install a unique or neutral mirror. Replacing an old mirror is simple. It doesn’t cost much and requires minimal handyman skills. If you have a surface mounted medicine cabinet, you can also replace it with a mirror. You just won’t have as much storage space. If you have a recessed medicine cabinet that’s embedded into the wall, hanging a mirror will be a little more tricky but it can be worth the effort. By opting for a mirror, you can choose from many fun shapes, sizes, and colors. Or you can keep it neutral by going with a frameless glass look one that coordinates with anything. Keep the width of your vanity in mind when selecting a mirror. In most instances, it should not exceed the width of the vanity. 5. Swap the handles on your vanity. Not everyone wants to replace the entire vanity to achieve a look that’s in style. The easiest way to update your vanity is by replacing the handles. Find pieces that match or complement the other hardware in your bathroom. You can also take your bathroom re-fresh a step further by painting your vanity. If you do this, be sure to use quality paint made for moist environments. You’ll also want to ensure you’re doing this with a sturdy vanity. Not all vanities are created equal. And because lowquality vanities are more often more susceptible to water damage, you’ll have to use your best judgment on whether or not to replace it, or paint it. n
