WELCOME TO THE

Birthday ISSUE

This is the first time we have done the birthday issue in the fall. We know winters in our area are long and cold, so we have the list you need to plan a great party, whether at your house or at a location. There are so many fun places to have parties in the Sioux Empire! Why not skip the work and let them take care of the stress for you? We had so much at Candy Cloud Factory taking pictures for our Birthday Party issue! We would like to say a special thanks to Edward and his team for letting us take over! We may have sent some kids home on sugar highs, but they loved all the cotton candy. Thank you to Julie Prairie Photography for capturing this sugary and colorful photo shoot! We are going to miss our summer intern, Chloe! She has helped our team so much this summer. Chloe is as sweet as the cotton candy she is eating! It was so great to see so many of you at Familyfest! I loved seeing all the smiling faces and everyone having so much fun! Make sure to check the Familyfest website, familyfestsf.com, to see all the pictures and videos from this year.

Chloe

Fall means it’s time for corn mazes and trips to the orchard! We are excited for the many fall activities offered in the Sioux Empire. To get fall outing ideas for your family, check out the article about Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park and the seasonal activities they offer. Happy fall!

Your child’s first birthday is an exciting day for you and your little one! With so many toys to choose from, deciding what to buy for your child’s first birthday can be overwhelming. Here are five great options for your child’s special day.

www.abcdentalkids.com

1. S pin Again from Fat Brain Toys: The Spin Again is a fun toy for one-year-olds! It is easy to use and fun to watch. The wheels are removable and spin into place on the center bar. It’s a great toy for kids to use on their own or with you. It encourages sensory development, hand-eye coordination, and color recognition.

Around the time of your child's

1ST BIRTHDAY is when the

1ST DENTAL VISIT is recommended!

2. F untime Tractor from Kidoozie: All the animals in this tractor make noise, making the tractor a fun and interactive toy for your little one! Plus, when you press the funnel at the top, the tractor pulls ahead. The lights, noise, music, and motion are great for capturing your child’s attention. 3. R ide-On Toy Model Primo by Ambosstoys: Kids will love this scooter! It allows kids to scoot around indoors or outdoors. The Ride-On Toy Model Primo won Best Toy 2019 from the American Specialty Toy Retailing Association, so you know you’re purchasing a fun and high-quality gift! 4. M icro Kickboard 3-in-1: This kickboard grows with your child. It begins as a ride-on scooter for your one-year-old, then transforms into a walk-along scooter for practicing walking. Later, you can extend the height of the wheel, turning the Micro Kickboard into a stand-and-ride scooter. Plus, the Micro Kickboard is available in a variety of colors, giving your child plenty of options to love! 5. P ewi from National Sporting Goods: This toy is a perfect blend of learning and playing. This lightweight toy teaches stability, steering, and walking. The Pewi works best indoors but is durable enough for outdoor use. With this list, we hope shopping for your child’s first birthday is a breeze! l

Backpack Tips to Help Protect Your Child’s Back

It’s at the top of your child’s school-supply needs. But it may be at the bottom of your child’s health concerns. Perhaps it’s time to pay a little more attention to the backpack your child carries day in and day out. If it’s heavy or ill-fitting, it could cause lower back pain or strained shoulder muscles. Dr. Jared Daniel, a pediatric orthopedic specialist at Sanford Health, has the following advice for parents on choosing the right backpack and packing it well. • I n order to distribute the weight across a child’s chest more evenly, a well-designed backpack will have two wide, cushioned shoulder straps with no tears. If the backpack includes a strap across the abdomen, that helps keep the weight even closer to a child’s core. •C hoose a backpack appropriately sized for your child. Be sure it fits snugly, with the straps adjusted equally and do not let the backpack dangle low on their back. •A loaded backpack should weigh 15% or less of the child’s body weight. •P lace the heaviest items low and in the center of the backpack, closer to the child’s body. •B ackpacks with wheels take the weight off a child’s back. Students in middle and high school, who move from class to class, are more apt to overload their backpacks than younger kids. Homework may

10 |

require hauling textbooks home. Sometimes they need items for extracurricular activities. For parents concerned that their child’s backpack is too heavy and may be causing back pain, Dr. Daniel has these tips for students to minimize the amount — and weight — of all that stuff: • I nstead of bringing every textbook home, think about only what’s needed for that night’s homework. • I f you have block classes, take to school only the books you need for that day’s classes. •W ork with the school or teacher to get a duplicate copy of a textbook, one for home and one for school. Or get access to an online version. • I f you have time, go to your locker between classes to switch out books rather than carrying them all with you. • I f you need to bring clothes and shoes for a sporting activity that day, consider whether you can just keep them at school, haul them to school in a separate duffel bag, or keep them in the car if your parents are transporting you between school and the activity. l

Inspiring Kids in the Community

Josie Josie Woodson’s healthy heart stems from a heart for service. “I have heart disease and Type 2 diabetes in my family,” Josie said. “I learned that one in four people will die of a heart attack or stroke. I know we can do better if we develop healthy habits early on.” Josie stays healthy with her active lifestyle. She is twelve years old and attends Harrisburg South Middle School. Josie is a member of the Harrisburg High School competitive cheer team, plans to try out for track, and plays clarinet in band. Josie is the reigning Miss Pre-Teen South Dakota International 2019 and winner of the international pageant system’s Staff Spirit award for embodying the pageant system’s spirit and values. She is a Tiger Rock Martial Arts Leadership and Demo Team member, co-host of the 605 Ninja Princess Warrior Camp, and an organizer for the East River Foster Parent Network clothing closet. Josie volunteered at the annual St. Baldrick’s event, where over $40,000 was raised for childhood cancer research. She took the plunge for the Special Olympics at the first-ever Harrisburg Polar Plunge, helping to raise more than $5,200. Josie has logged over 300 volunteer hours with Tiger Rock Martial Arts, including volunteering at Familyfest in July. Josie loves any opportunity to meet new people and help them, she said. “One of my favorite events is Familyfest because not only do we get to perform for families, but we get

to help kids run through the obstacle course at the Tiger Rock booth,” Josie said. Josie partnered with 605 Ninja Academy to co-host a Princess Warrior Camp, where she helped girls on obstacle courses and taught them about her Miss Pre-Teen South Dakota International platform, Kids in Action. “My goal with [Kids in Action] is to encourage kids to learn healthy habits through food and exercise so we can grow into healthy adults and reduce the risk of health concerns such as heart attacks, strokes, and Type 2 diabetes,” Josie said. Josie motivates kids to stay active through her weekly “Fitness Friday” videos on Facebook. “I want to be a nurse when I grow up so I can help people be healthy,” Josie said. Josie reminds us that no matter how busy we are, we can always find time to give back to our community. Thank you for inspiring us, Josie! To learn more about Josie go to: thehoodmagazine.com!

Making a

Memorable Sweet 16 Congratulations on raising a sixteen-year-old! This is an exciting milestone for you and your teen. Here are a few tips for throwing your teen a memorable sweet sixteen party: •M ake it a surprise. Birthday parties are always fun, but it’s even more exciting when you don’t know the party is coming. Consider throwing your teen a party a week or two before their birthday. It will extend the experience and make their sixteenth feel even more special. •A sk your teen’s friends for help. They likely have ideas of what your teen would like to do. They can also help you with organizing the guest list, freeing up your time to take care of the other details. Make sure they can keep it a secret! •P ool parties are great for groups. These can be indoor or outdoor, depending on the time of year. There’s room for plenty of friends and you can often bring in food. Make sure to follow pool safety tips and consider hiring a lifeguard. •D on’t hesitate to throw the party at home. Backyard parties are a great option for teens. You can set up yard games, play music through speakers, and maybe have a bonfire. Plus, the party is contained to your yard. You could invite your teen’s friends to stay overnight, extending the fun into the next day! •C reate a private Facebook group for the guests. You can post updates, see who is confirmed to come, and share pictures after the event. Make the group private if you don’t want your teen to find out about it. •T he memory matters most. I’ll never forget the joy I felt when I found friends and family waiting to surprise me at my sweet sixteen party! Your teen will always remember the work you put into making their party memorable. l

Tire Safety Tips for

New Drivers As kids grow older, the number of responsibilities they take on increase. And when it comes to turning 16, one of the biggest responsibilities begins: driving. When you go through the driving safety checklist with your teen driver – seat belt, traffic laws, no cell phones – don’t forget to discuss the importance of safe tires! Make sure your young adult is ready for the road by informing them of these tire safety tips: 1) C heck Your Tire Tread: Tread depth affects how well your car comes to a stop. You can check your tread depth by sticking a penny upside-down in a tread groove – it is time to replace if Lincoln’s head is visible. You can also check your tread depth by using a gauge or the wear bar indicators built into the tire.

to replace it. Most new vehicles are substituting spare tires with tire inflation kits that include puncture-coating sealants, air compressors, and run-flat tires. Check to see what your vehicle has and make sure you have a roadside assistance plan.

2) C heck Your Air Pressure: Proper tire pressure is a key part of the overall performance and safety of your vehicle. Maintaining the correct air pressure is crucial during the hot months. Check your tires’ air pressure at least once a month when they’re cool, especially before long road trips. Low air pressure leads to poor handling and gas mileage, excessive wear, and overloading.

4) R otate Your Tires: Routine tire rotations are a significant part of tire maintenance and tread life. Make sure to rotate your tires every 6,000 to 8,000 miles to help maintain their handling, traction, and stopping capabilities. Tires that are not rotated tend to develop uneven or irregular wear. If your tires are showing signs of uneven wear, make sure to have them inspected by a qualified expert to determine the potential cause.

3) C heck Your Trunk: The spare tire is one of the most important parts of your vehicle, even though it’s used the least. Few things put a halt to a road trip as quickly as a flat tire and no spare

Turning 16 can be effortless and fun if these simple car and tire tips are followed. l

HAVING SAFE TIRES IS NO ACCIDENT. Wherever you drive, you want your family to be safe. So do we. Let us check your tires before your next trip, to keep them on the straight and narrow.

Birthday Fun Money Smarts! Birthdays are something every kid looks forward to year after year…mainly for the presents, I think! As a parent, it can be a bit tricky to find the balance between the hottest toy and something that won’t end up in the corner collecting dust in a week. I know something I struggle with when it comes to gifts is hearing my kids say, “I want.” How do we teach our kids about the difference between wanting and needing in a society that tells us we need all of the latest stuff right now? How do we teach our kids the importance of making smart money decisions that will help them build a strong financial future? Well, I have a couple ideas beginning with birthdays! Now in our household, we hold pretty tightly to the concept of something to wear, something to read, something you need, and something for fun. That means four gifts that we choose for our kids. As kids get older, they may prefer money and the opportunity to allocate those dollars how they see fit. This is a great opportunity to teach them about smart money management. They have received limited resources, AKA birthday money, and they probably “want” a long list of items, but they don’t have enough to buy it all. It is time for some tough decisions. To start, a good rule of thumb for allocating their money is spreading it across three distinct categories: giving (10%), savings (45%),

40 |

September 2019 | thehoodmagazine.com

and spending (45%). Don’t do it for them. Let them get out a calculator and figure the math out on their own. They can do it! When it comes to the spending category, it is important to let kids decide how to spend but help them find out what really is important to them. Start with a list and prompt them by asking questions like: What item does your friend have that you always want to play with? What are you always checking out online? What is an item that could help you at school? Once you have the list, then they are able to check their available spending money. Most likely, they will find they cannot afford it all. They may quickly realize they would rather spend money on things they need rather than items they just want to have. They may make some mistakes early on and spend money on things that end up being a waste, but those are valuable life lessons. If they can get the hang of this concept young, it will serve them well along their financial journey for the rest of their lives. l

Making Your

Celebration Special Party planning can be stressful. There is knowing who to invite, where to have the party, food options, cake, and so much more that we find ourselves stressing over for weeks prior to the event. There are many factors that go in to deciding the size of your party. Younger children that attend a daycare setting tend to have more “friends” they want to include, some children are surrounded by a large number of cousins, and some children may not have family that is local around them. While some families opt for small and intimate parties, others go all out with a neighborhood bash. There is no right or wrong way to throw a party, and the one thing we all have in common is we want it to be special for that lucky person we are celebrating. Here are some tips to make your party one to remember, no matter the size:

Small and Special Having a small celebration leaves less planning and prepping stress and more time for fun! Make the birthday boy or girl feel special by having the day about them from start to finish! • Decorate their bedroom doorway with streamers or balloons to get them ready to celebrate from the minute they wake up. • Plan a fun birthday breakfast. Colorful pancakes, sprinkles, and whipped cream make for a breakfast to remember! • Let them choose the outing. Is there something they love to do? Somewhere they love to eat? Maybe it’s taking them shopping for a new birthday outfit! Put them in charge and give them a say on how they want to make the day special.

• E nd the day with a family movie night. Perhaps set up an ice cream sundae bar with all the fun toppings to enjoy during the show. Plus, a new pair of cozy pajamas and slippers make great gifts!

A Big Bash If you enjoy entertaining and are surrounded by many family and friends, you may prefer to celebrate with a big bash! Even if the guest list is long, there are still some simple things you can do to make sure the birthday child feels front and center while keeping your budget in check. •D o a picture collage wall. Use a couple of your favorite photos from each year. Everyone enjoys a walk down memory lane! • Try DIY décor. Even if you aren’t the craftiest parent around, you can use streamers, banners, and balloons to make the room feel festive! Plus, décor in bright, primary colors can be reused for many parties to come! • S kip the 5-course meal. Offer easy appetizers or finger food your guests can munch on. Setting up “bars” such as a sandwich bar, pizza bar, taco bar, etc. are great ways to serve food without going over the top. Most importantly, no matter how you choose to celebrate, don’t forget to enjoy the memories! l

Estate Planning 101: Understanding the Basics

What is Estate Planning? Estate planning is planning for your property, your loved ones, and yourself in the event of death or incapacity. It is important to do estate planning early on to eliminate or minimize problems before a crisis arises. What is a Will? A will is a legal document that expresses a person’s final wishes and intentions of what should be done with his or her property after death. Who needs a Will? Almost everyone needs a will. Someone who leaves behind a boyfriend, girlfriend, fiancé, or lifelong friend will not be able to provide for them unless there is a valid will that states that intention. When should I make a Will? Immediately. It is an unfortunate truth that no one knows what tomorrow holds. It is always wise to plan ahead.

Who should draft my Will? Get an attorney to draft your will. Handwritten wills may be legally valid but are probably not a good idea. Handwritten wills are often incomplete. Having an attorney draft your will helps ensure that your will is complete and your wishes are known. How often should I change my Will? It is a good idea to review your will periodically. You should change your will any time there has been a significant change in your life. Below is a list of some of the common reasons people change or review their wills: • You have recently married or divorced. • The birth or death of a loved one. •Y ou have remarried and you have children by a prior marriage and/or children by a second marriage. •Y ou have sold property that was specifically included in your previous will. • You have acquired new assets.

What is a Conservator? A conservator is a person appointed by the court for a minor or an adult who is incapacitated. The conservator is responsible for taking care of the protected person’s financial affairs. Often a conservator will help the protected person pay monthly bills, maintain their property, and assist in making all other financial decisions. What is a Guardian? A guardian is a person appointed by the court that is responsible for taking care of a protected person’s personal affairs and providing for their well-being. This may include making decisions regarding where the protected person is going to live and making health care decisions. A guardianship can be limited and give only certain responsibilities to the guardian or can be more comprehensive. What is a Living Will? A living will is a written document that lists your health care wishes. A living will generally appoints one (or more) person to act as your health care agent to make health care decisions for you in the event you are in terminal condition and unable to participate in your own medical decisions. This document should state what kind of treatment you do or do not want to receive if you are in that condition. l

What happens if I die without a Will? If you die intestate, meaning without a will, state laws will dictate how your property will be divided and to whom it will pass. Generally, state statutes provide that your property will pass to your living spouse and/or your children.

Safety Tips For Back to School

With a little help from the Educated Mommy community, we would like to share some tips to prepare for back to school! One common struggle parents have is teaching their children “stranger danger.” Here is the problem with the word “strangers”: Even people you want your children to talk to if they need help are strangers, like police officers, fire rescue, new teachers, etc. Parents need a more comprehensive approach that goes beyond “stranger danger” – one that teaches children to recognize suspicious behaviors regardless of the context. That way, kids recognize bad situations and make smart decisions beyond a simple “don’t talk to strangers.” Teach your children to trust their gut; try calling it the “uh-oh” feeling. Role-playing different scenarios gives kids a chance to practice protecting themselves. Be sure to go over specific scenarios. One Educated Mommy community member suggested the Berenstain Bears book “Learn About Strangers” as a great resource for facilitating these conversations! Another suggestion: have a rule that kids should never go anywhere alone and should always ask permission. Tell your kids that if they ever get separated from you in public, they should look first for an employee (like a cashier in a store). If that’s not possible, they should look for another mom with children.

A common struggle is getting kids to memorize your last name, address, and phone number. Here are some suggestions from moms in the Educated Mommy community: • “ We put the letters in our names to a ‘tune,’ spelled out with voice inflection/tune each time,” one mom said. This is called mnemonics, or the study and development of systems for improving and assisting the memory. • “ When I taught my kids our phone numbers and address, we would focus on three numbers or one word each night and repeat it together several times and again in the morning during our morning wake routine,” another mom said. • “ I taught my oldest phone numbers by repetition,” one mom said. “We drove from the west side of town to the east side and back, and we repeated my number over and over. He had my phone number memorized by the time we got home.” We hope these tips help you teach your child to stay safe as they start school. Happy Back to School! l

Cutting Back Sugar When we think of sugar, we immediately think of cakes, cookies, ice cream, and many more dessert items. However, sugar is a component of food that can actually be beneficial to our bodies. Sugar is a type of carbohydrate that is needed for energy in the body. Carbohydrates exist in many forms, such as starches and fiber, but sugar is a type that a lot of us already know about. There are two forms of sugar within foods: naturally occurring sugar and sugar that is added to foods for taste, texture, and preservation. Foods that contain naturally-occurring sugar include fruits (fructose), dairy (lactose), and starchy vegetables (potatoes and corn). Foods that contain added sugar can include dairy and grain-based desserts, sweets, and sugar-sweetened beverages. High amounts of added sugar can lead to health concerns such as dental cavities, obesity from increased calories, Type 2 diabetes, and other conditions. Having one piece of cake for a birthday celebration is not going to hurt us. In fact, it is acceptable to consume sugar in moderation; however, this does not mean that it is OK to have a piece of cake every day, because this can lead to a decrease in nutrient-dense food consumption. In other words, we would not be eating foods that have many nutritional benefits if we ate a lot of cake every day. The dietary guideline for eating foods with added sugar is less than 10% of our daily calories. For example, if you were consuming a 2,000 calorie diet, it is recommended to consume fewer than 200 calories from foods with added sugar. This can be accomplished by eating a balanced diet of fruits and vegetables, grains, protein, and dairy products.

Another way to limit added sugars in our diets is to be aware of the different names for sugar. It is easy to look on a food label and see the words “added sugars,” but there are other forms of sugar that you may not be aware of listed on the ingredients list. Some of the most common names for sugar include cane sugar, evaporated cane juice, corn syrup, high-fructose corn syrup, raw sugar, brown sugar, honey, maple syrup, and brown rice syrup. This does not mean you cannot ever have dessert again, but making small changes and keeping a balanced diet in mind can help you reach your health goals without having to sacrifice your sweet tooth. Some healthy dessert ideas can include: • Frozen yogurt topped with fruit and nuts • Grilled peaches with Greek yogurt • Fruit parfait with flax seeds • Dark chocolate-drizzled fruit kabobs l

Your Mother-in-Law May Not Have A Filter

But Your House Does

Perhaps one of the more annoying but beneficial components in the maintenance of one’s home is the air filter in your house’s heating and cooling system. Its purpose in the beginning was simply to trap large dust particles and prevent them from damaging the equipment. Today, the filter is a more refined item. Thanks to better design and tighter weaves, the air filter serves to trap finer contaminants, resulting in cleaner indoor air and generally better health.

There are different schools of thought as to how often you should change your air system’s filter. Here’s the easiest strategy: change the filter when the seasons change. Around here, one might think that means changing the filter twice, but truly it means for optimal benefit, change the filter every three months. The following unpleasant experiences might be had when one fails to replace the air filter: • • • • • •

Lower AC / heater system efficiency Higher energy bills Increased carbon footprint Diminished home comfort More repairs to keep the strained equipment running Poor indoor air quality

The American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) established a standardized method for testing air filter efficiency back in 1987 called Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV). All air conditioning and heater filters today are given a rating on the MERV scale, which ranges from 1 to 16. Filters are rated on their ability to trap small particles. Different types of filters have different MERV ratings. The higher the rating, the higher the efficiency and ability to trap finer contaminants. Before you go out and buy the best MERV 16 bag or box filter you can find, upgrading to the highest efficiency air filter possible presents its own problems:

•P oor fit – Most furnaces have slots that accommodate oneinch thick air filters. High-efficiency filters are thicker, making them impossible to use unless you have the slot modified. Also, without a proper fit, contaminants can make their way around the filter and circulate back into the air you breathe, decreasing the filter’s effectiveness. •D iminished airflow – Filters with extra tight weaves reduce airflow, which increases your utility bills and can cause premature equipment failure. • I ncreased cost with little air quality difference – Highefficiency filters cost significantly more than low or medium efficiency options. They may be able to trap minuscule particles, but unless you have respiratory problems, you probably won’t notice a difference between MERV 7 and MERV 14 filtration. Your best bet is to pick a mid-range filter no higher than MERV 8, which can trap particles as small as three microns, such as hair spray, talcum powder, and mold spores. If your furnace came with a MERV 1 to 4 filter, the equipment may require some modifications to perform well with a higher efficiency filter. Only a licensed contractor should perform such modifications. l

Your Kitchen A Venue of Its Own The fall season is quickly approaching, and that means families and friends getting together for great sporting events, holidays, birthday parties, or just for fun. In the center of it all is food, food, and more food. Where do you find food? In the kitchen! What’s in your kitchen? Appliances, utensils, and never enough countertops! Take a look at these items to see how they fit in your kitchen. If you have a good inventory and everything is in its place, entertaining is much easier and less stressful! Next, let’s talk about cooking and exactly what that means. Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines cooking as “to prepare food for eating, especially by means of heat.” With that premise, we know your range, which includes the oven and the cooktop, and your microwave are used for cooking. They probably get a workout through the fall and holiday seasons. It is important that they are working to the maximum. We don’t take our appliances in for routine maintenance like a car, but you can be proactive and ensure that you do all you can to extend the life and maximum performance of each appliance, especially before any big event, like an 8-year-old’s birthday party! A clean oven allows the heat to flow evenly. Having chunks of pizza and other food on the bottom of the oven creates odors, air flow changes, and smoke. You certainly don’t want your unicorn cake tasting like the barbecue sauce from the ribs you made two weeks ago! Use the range settings to

clean the oven. Or, if you don’t want to use the clean cycle, baking soda and water can do wonders. While cleaning the oven, soak your oven racks in hot, soapy water, and they will come out shining! New thought, old space. If you want more space in your kitchen, think beyond countertops. Using the oven as storage can be helpful. The oven is insulated and can be used to store some cool items if you’re not baking. This frees up space in the refrigerator! The same goes for the microwave oven. Use it to stage or pre-stage some foods for quick access or a quick reheat! Between the oven and microwave, you gained about five square feet! Who couldn’t use more space in their kitchen? For storage before or during your event, take advantage of the dishwasher to keep used items off your countertop. If something is dirty, the dishwasher is a great place to stow it, as it needs to be cleaned anyway. Take time to look at your kitchen as an additional venue for all of your gathering needs. It requires a little off-the-counter thinking. Enjoy all the fun times and create all sorts of great memories in your kitchen this fall! l
