welcome

It’s Time to

Cruise! We are excited for our 2nd Familyfest Fun Cruise! Families loved it so much last year that we decided to bring it back again. The cruise allows you to check out local businesses to see what they are all about. Each stop is offering extra specials and giveaways on the day of the cruise. Make sure to keep an eye out for the Familyfest QR code, at each business, for a chance to win prizes! The great thing about the cruise is you can do as many or as few stops as you would like. It is a great way to spend the day as a family. Have you ever wondered how Apple Tree was started or what they are all about? We learn about the history of Apple Tree and how that history impacts their efforts today. The laws are changing for teens and driving this summer. We have the details you want to know if your teen is hitting the road soon as a first-time driver. I am looking forward to seeing so many of you on the cruise this year. I will be hauling Fancy around, so make sure to come and say “Hi” and grab a photo with our mascot!

Delicious for

EVERYONE

Get the most out of those fresh fruits and veggies this summer! There are many sights, smells, and tastes that are nostalgic to summer, including all the fresh produce! Whether you are picking it out of your backyard garden, grabbing it from your local farmer’s market, or buying from a store, your baby is sure to appreciate incorporating these yummy flavors into their diet! For our littlest table food eaters that are still on purees, take advantage of this season! Grab those fresh pears, peaches, beans, and peas. After a simple steam and blend, you have homemade baby food. If your little one is ready for chewing, the possibilities are endless this summer. Here are some of our baby and toddler summer favorites!

Melons, melons, and more melons. What’s summer without a juicy, cold piece of watermelon? Try cutting in rectangular strips so those little fingers can have something to hold on to! Melons have a lot of water content, so they are also great for hydration!

Cucumbers make for a great snack! Plus, letting your little one gnaw on a cooled cucumber slice makes a great teether for those sore gums!

Berries! Blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, and more. They are yummy, sweet, and full of flavor. Berries have a ton of antioxidants and Vitamin C to keep those immune systems happy.

Peaches and pears are a summer must have. There is nothing quite as delicious as a sweet peach. While fruit can help with constipation, peaches and pears are at the top of the list! If your child is having a little trouble going to the bathroom, reach for a fresh peach!

As a fun bonus, you can keep snack time exciting and interesting by cutting your fruits and vegetables into all different shapes and sizes! This summer, you cannot go wrong introducing some fresh fruits and vegetables into your baby’s snack and mealtime. All the fresh flavors and textures are sure to ignite your baby’s senses and taste buds! l

Making a

Difference

The year is 1981. One woman starts with an idea, a spark, and a passion. Her name is Dee Stewart, and her passion is children. She looks around and sees a need—a need for the education of young children. Learning, after all, begins early in life and Dee believed she could offer that learning. Just as a tree can come from a simple seed, Apple Tree Children’s Center grew from an idea that Dee planted and nurtured.

Since the first center was established in 1986, Apple Tree Children’s Center has been a trusted name in Sioux Falls for child care and early education. Since then, the number of centers has grown; currently, there are four locations in Sioux Falls. Apple Tree continues to strive to be a well-rounded academic and socially conscious learning environment. Over the years, faces may change, but the foundation remains the same. The Stewart family also continues to be involved in the day-to-day operations, and Dee, of course, keeps a watchful eye. The mission statement of Apple Tree reads: “The mission of Apple Tree Learning Center is to provide exceptional care, nurture and age appropriate learning opportunities in the context of a Christ centered worldview. This mission is accomplished through the dedicated effort of management and staff whose concern is for the welfare of the children entrusted to their care.” Dee understood the important aspects of child care and early childhood education. For her, it wasn’t just care; it was making the care exceptional. It was going above and beyond what was expected. Faith was also an important part of building Apple Tree. “A Christ centered worldview” means that at the core of Apple Tree is Christ and faith. Not faith that is force-fed, but that it is a natural and easy part of each day. Faith that reminds us that we have someone to guide the steps in our journey through life.

After all, that is what we do: we make a difference. Our job is to shape, mold, encourage, and above all, teach. Child care may not be seen as a glamorous profession, but we believe that helping to create the base of a child’s life is vitally important, and we could never imagine doing anything else. Many great people have paved the way for important things and made an impact on our lives. We thank Dee for acting on her vision and giving us a chance to make our own differences in the small lives at Apple Tree Children’s Center.

Fun Ways to Keep Preschoolers

Busy in the Car Plan ahead with activities and snacks to entertain beyond electronics. If you are a parent of a preschooler, you are already aware of how difficult it can be to keep your child entertained in the car. But a road trip can be a fun, educational and sane experience with a little planning, creativity and preparation. Sure, electronic games, apps and portable DVD players are great distractions. But don’t overlook these family-friendly games and activities that can keep everyone happy as you travel.

Activity ideas: • I spy: This is a fun game for children of all ages, and no supplies are needed. Use this game to help your child learn colors and shapes. You could say, “I see something green. What is it?” or “I see something tall and skinny. What is it?” • J ournaling: Find a sturdy notepad, or make one from construction paper, hole punches and yarn. Have your preschooler draw pictures of what he or she sees out the window along the way. This encourages fine motor and creativity skills. •B aking sheet: Use a baking sheet as a hard surface to color, write or play games on. Have crayons, paper, small games or alphabet magnets ready for your child to play with. • “Box” of tricks: Find a sturdy cardboard box and paint the top with chalkboard paint. Fill

the box with chalk, crayons, pocket-sized coloring books and other toys and activities. This box serves as a chalkboard as well as storage for creative play items. Watch your preschooler’s creativity shine!

•N ight ride: Grab some glow sticks from the dollar store to bring along while traveling at night. Your child can make a little glow light show in the back seat. •S cavenger hunt: Before embarking on your journey, make a picture list of items for your child to try to find along the way. This is a great way to build pre-reading skills. •R eading time: Bring a few of your kids’ favorite books, both in the printed versions and audiobooks. You can listen to the story as the kids read along. Any time your child can have a book in hand is great for building reading skills. As always, don’t forget the snacks. Be mindful of what your child can eat safely when you’re not watching. Road trips are a great time to put kids’ imaginations to the test to create puppets, masks, journals and more. l

Changes to Teen Permit Laws May Change Your Summer Plans Motor vehicle crashes are the number one killer of teens per the CDC, but with the right education and parental guidance, you can help your teen be a safer driver. If your teen is ready to get behind the wheel soon, recent updates to South Dakota laws may change when they are able to hit the road alone. The law, passed in 2020, changes some of the eligibility requirements for teen instruction permits and operator licenses; it went into effect on July 1, 2021. It is important to note that there is no grandfathering for those who hold permits prior to July 1, 2021. Per the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, here is what parents need to know:

Instruction Permit Requirements • Drivers between 14 and 18 years of age, issued an Instruction Permit July 1, 2020 or after, are required to drive on the permit for a minimum of 275 days (or 180 days after passing an approved driver’s education course) before upgrading to a Restricted Minor’s Permit. • Any minor holding an Instruction Permit issued July 1, 2020 or after, must complete 50 hours of adult supervised driving. The 50 hours must include 10 hours of driving in inclement weather and 10 hours of nighttime driving.

Restricted Minor’s Permit Changes • Anyone under 18 years of age must drive on a Restricted Minor’s Permit for a minimum of 6 months before upgrading to an unrestricted driver’s license. • Drive, with your parent/guardian’s permission, alone from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. From 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

16 |

July/August 2021 | thehoodmagazine.com

you must have a parent or legal guardian seated next to you. • E xceptions for driving on a Restricted Minor’s Permit: - May drive alone after 10 p.m. if they are taking the most direct route and traveling to or from: a) School or a school event b) Church or church event c) Work d) Driving ag machinery •P assenger limit while driving without adult supervision on a Restricted Minor’s Permit: - T he first 6-month period of driving on a Restricted Permit, no passengers are allowed except immediate family or members of the driver’s household. -A fter 6-months of driving on a Restricted Permit, teens may have one passenger under 18 who is not immediate family or part of their household. If you want to learn more about these changes to teen drive permits, visit the South Dakota Department of Public Safety Driver’s Licensing website at https://dps.sd.gov/driver-licensing or contact the state Driver Licensing Program via email at dpsdl@ state.sd.us or call 605-773-6883. l

FREE FAMILY FUN JULY 24TH • 10AM-2PM

We had so much fun watching families create lasting memories together during our Familyfest Fun Cruise last year that we are bringing it back for a second year! You will want to stay tuned to the Familyfest Facebook and Instagram pages and subscribe to our newsletter to stay up to date with all the fun happening as we lead up to the main event on July 24th from 10am – 2pm. What is the Familyfest Fun Cruise? The Familyfest Fun Cruise was created in 2020 as a new way for families to explore all that our amazing community has to offer for families! From 10am-2pm on July 24th, families can spend the day together cruising to area businesses and organizations to participate in activities, enter to win prizes and maybe even get some deals!

What is the cost of the Familyfest Fun Cruise? Absolutely nothing! It’s true! The Familyfest Fun Cruise is completely free for all families participating!

Does our family have to cruise to all of the locations listed? No! Your family can go to as many or as few stops as you would like! Many families will start at Stop #1 (Sanford at 69th & Louise) to receive their FREE Event Backpack and then head to the stops that interest your family! You are in control of your family’s cruising experience!

That’s a pretty fancy unicorn I see on the Familyfest Fun Cruise marketing! Who is that? Fancy is super amazing Familyfest mascot. She likes to travel around the Sioux Empire and meet as many friends as possible every year! She will be out cruising our community during the month of July to get excited for the Fun Cruise this year! If you see her, come say hi & take some pictures! She absolutely loves hugs from kids!

What is the Familyfest Fun Cruise Digital Passport? At each stop location, there will be a QR Code for your family to scan. When you scan the code, you will be asked to enter your name, email and answer a question about that stop. Every time you scan a different QR Code and answer the question, you will earn one entry into our Familyfest Fun Cruise drawings for hundreds of dollars in prizes! Don’t forget you earn one entry each time you scan a new QR code at each location and answer the question, so have fun cruising to as many stops as you can! l

Tips on Maintaining

Your Home’s A/C Unit Now that summer is in full swing and outdoor temperatures justify indoor air conditioning; and while enjoying the outdoors is hopefully priority number one, having a comfortable, cool place to retreat to once the outside fun is done should be priority number two. Ensuring your A/C unit is operating effectively and stays that way is the difference between summer fun and summer done. 1. Schedule annual maintenance checks with a pro The best thing you can do is find a reputable HVAC company to clean and inspect your system seasonally. Experts can help recognize and diagnose potential issues before you end up with a broken air conditioner at the hottest time of the year.

2. Clean and change your filters regularly Taking proper care of your filters is probably the easiest and most effective thing you can do to keep your A/C unit healthy. Vacuum and rinse reusable filters in between your maintenance visits and replace them as recommended for optimum air quality. 3. Make sure the area surrounding an outdoor unit is clear Keep the surrounding area neatly maintained to ensure nothing interferes with the system’s ability to function.

4. Avoid opening and closing your doors and windows too often If you are constantly opening and closing windows and doors, the temperature inside your home rises or falls accordingly, and your system must work harder to consistently adjust. 5. Seal any openings that may let cold air escape Make sure you apply caulking, weather stripping, and insulation as needed to prevent cool air loss. 6. Let the unit rest when you are not home You save the most money and energy if you maintain a consistent temperature while you are home but let your system rest when you are away. 7. Manage and clean vents Clean vents regularly. If you keep vents open in rooms, keep the doors to those rooms closed to help the smaller space reach the desired temperature sooner. l July/August 2021 | thehoodmagazine.com |
