Fuel your Kids for After School with Healthy Snacks

Get some extra energy before running off to practice, training, or rehearsal School will soon be back in session and fall after-school activities will be in full swing. Your kiddos sit at their desks all day, but their days don’t stop there. Kids who go straight from school to after-school activities can benefit from having a snack to provide extra energy and hydration before running off to practice, training or rehearsal. When you make food fun for kids, they are more likely to eat it and enjoy it! By preparing healthy snacks at home for your athlete, actor, or musician, you can control what goes into their bodies, fueling them in the right ways. Sanford Health dietitians share some of their favorite snack ideas for kids below.

Get creative! Trail mix is a kid-friendly, convenient snack that you can toss into their backpacks in the morning. However, it is important to remember that trail mix can include high-energy and high-calorie ingredients, so you only need about ¼ of a cup for a snack. The fun part about trail mix is you can mix and match your child’s favorite ingredients into the recipe. Using items like wheat cereal, dried fruit, and nuts are healthy options to add to the mix. Your child might even have a fun time putting the trail mix together with you!

Post activity After running around with their friends for extended periods of time, your children’s bodies need replenishment. Consider giving them a post-activity snack to replenish that lost glycogen that gets depleted during activity. One of the keys to a healthy post-activity snack is to balance it. An example of a healthy option to stay within those parameters would be a banana with chocolate milk. And remember, WATER, WATER, WATER. Hydration is vital in our body’s recovery process, which will ensure they are ready to hit the field, stage, or court again tomorrow!

Healthy options, healthy school year Good nutrition is a critical factor in ensuring that your little one has enough energy to participate in the after-school activities that they love. Providing healthy, nutritious snack options ensures a great start to the school year. Make sure to remind them that the prime time for snacking before an activity is 30 minutes. This leaves enough time for digestion and for those fuels to start working. So, while it may be easy to pick up prepackaged snacks, candy or chips, remember, healthy options can be simple too!

Advice for First-Time

Kindergarten Parents This coming school year, I am sending my firstborn off to kindergarten. He is a mama’s boy, so my heart hurts even writing this. We chose a daycare that only offered MondayThursday care, so I am blessed to have him home with me on Fridays. I am so very grateful for that extra bonding time.

The start of the school year is just around the corner. He wasn’t a huge fan of preschool, so I’ve been worried about this transition. Naturally, I turned to my social media network to gather advice from seasoned parents to help all of us during this time. And they didn’t let me down. See their tips for not only the first day (i.e., all the crying) but also things to think of before the day arrives and general advice for the year.

FOLLOW THESE TIPS: Preparation: • Attend the open house to meet the teacher and share your questions and concerns.

First-Day: • Try to hide those tears until they’re out of your sight. If your child sees you sad, it can make them think it is a bad idea. •B UT feel free to cry all you want that day. Take a mental health day from work (or check out early to pick them up) or schedule lunch with a friend to provide some relief.

General advice: •D on’t forget the school drop-off and pick-up etiquette. Not only does it keep the process running smoothly but it also helps keep the kids safe. •C heck the lunch schedule and meal prep any lunches they need to bring on Sunday!

• Buy a quality backpack.

•D on’t forget to wash their water bottle routinely.

• L abel everything with your child’s name, from lunch boxes to boots.

• T hey will most likely be exhausted the first few days or weeks after school starts. The transition can be hard on them, but they do adjust. l

How Much

is TOO MUCH Screen Time

It’s a question parents find themselves asking all year long, how much time my kids should be spending watching TV, movies, playing with a smartphone or computer, even video games. There’s a lot of information out there, the good, the harmful effects, and more. That makes it hard for you to know, what really is too much screen time? We’re here to help clear through some of the noise out there and give some simple ways to know when too much, is really too much. First, let’s talk about those harmful effects too much time in front of devices can really have on your kids. Weight Nowadays there are devices everywhere, the living room, bedroom, and handheld. Too much screen time can lead to children becoming overweight because they become sedentary and are served a plethora of ads for junk food. Sleep The more time kids watch a screen, the more they may struggle to fall asleep or have a tough time maintaining a regular sleep schedule. School With the school year about to begin, it’s important to point out the more access students have to TVs or other screens, especially in their bedroom, the worse they tend to perform on tests compared to students who don’t have TV’s or devices in their room.

So, what can you as a parent do to help cut down the amount of time your child spends in front of screens? It’s easy! If your child needs to focus on homework or another task, make sure there isn’t a TV or device nearby to distract them. Keep electronics out of their bedrooms and encourage them to watch where they eat. Eating a meal or snacking in front of a device can promote mindless snacking and lead to obesity. As you work to track your child’s screen time, keep in mind they’re not only in front of devices at home. Depending on their school, they can spend a good amount of time on devices there as well. Overall, what’s vital to remember is to be mindful of how screen time is impacting their quality of life. Research out there about screen time and its effect on children isn’t truly definitive yet due to the sheer mass of content and devices out there. Never fear though, there are efforts underway to build studies that will lead to better answers to those complex questions we all have about kids, teens, and screens. So, for now, keep it simple. You know your child best, but if you need advice or have questions, start with your child’s primary care provider. l July/August 2022 | thehoodmagazine.com |

Every Kid Outdoors Pass If you have a 4th grader, you HAVE to get an Every Kid Outdoors pass! It’s a fantastic program through the National Parks Service that will get your family into all the National Parks for FREE! My kids are in high school now, but when my youngest finished 4th grade, we took a wonderful family vacation to use our pass in late June. We are not camping people, so we stayed in hotels and with family along the way. Camping in the parks takes a lot more planning, as the campsites fill quickly, even a year in advance. We drove from Sioux Falls to Mt. Rushmore (which does not charge an entry fee but does charge for parking). From there, we went to Gillette, WY, with a stop at Devil’s Tower along the way. Our family listened to the audiobook “Ready Player One” by Ernest Cline as we drove. It’s over 15 hours long, so it was a great way for us video game nerds to pass the time as the miles rolled by. After our night in a hotel in Gillette, we stopped at the Campbell County Rockpile Museum (we’re museum nerds, too) before we headed out of town to Yellowstone National Park. The Park Ranger at the gate asked us to pull our car up so that they could talk directly to our 4th grader. They made a big deal about welcoming them to the park and making her feel special. She was the reason our whole family got to go to the park for free. We saw geysers, beautiful lakes, wildlife, and waterfalls unlike anything we had ever seen before

during our two days in Yellowstone. Amazing hikes and fun picnics filled our time. We drove the south loop on the first day, spending the night in West Yellowstone at a hotel, then looping back for the north loop on day two before heading out for the long drive to Kalispell, MT. We stayed with a family member in Kalispell and took a day trip into Glacier National Park. It was very busy there, which our relatives had warned us that it would be, so we got up early to be sure we’d be able to find a spot to park to hike at Logan Pass. I have heard that it is even busier there now, so be sure to pack your patience. There are no words to describe how beautiful it was with the crystal-clear water and huge pine trees. One lesson I learned was even if you’ve told your kids to put on shoes and socks for the day, check to make sure they’re not wearing sandals! My 4th grader thought sandals would be fine since it was in the 90s that day, but large portions of the hike were over snow. Wearing sandals and hiking in snow is chilly on your toes! The trip home was long, but I-90 follows the beautiful Yellowstone River for much of the way. Lots of miles and time to reminisce about all the fun we had! l

Raising an

OutdoorLoving Family As I grew up, my family taught me the importance of being outside. We camped almost every weekend in the summer, and I learned everything about hunting and fishing during those years. If it weren’t for all those life experiences when I was younger, I wouldn’t be the dad I am today to pass that to my boys. My youngest son, Finn, is very much like me and prefers the outdoors any chance he gets. Huxley, my oldest, is more indoors and enjoys his electronics and watching YouTube. I try to bargain with him to get him involved with the outdoors as much as possible. My wife Shantel is more of an indoors person as well. We also have two dogs that help encourage us to go for walks and the dog park. As a family, we find ways to get outside and active together that bring us all joy.

18 |

July/August 2022 | thehoodmagazine.com

Almost everything is appealing to me about the outdoors: the feeling of freedom, away from stress, work, and anything that might bring down my energy. I love taking my family on nature walks to see what we can discover. The bonding that I get with my boys being outdoors is unmatched by anything. We spend time doing so many things, from going fishing to looking at bugs, rocks, trees, or anything that might fascinate us.

I enjoy teaching my boys the importance of caring for and respecting the outdoors. We participate in cleaning up trash, and they help with yard work. They’ve learned life skills like how to create a fire, hunt for food, and know the dangers to be aware of. I’ve also shared with them how crucial being active outdoors is for our mental and physical health. If you are looking for ways to get your family outside more, here are a few ideas: • S tart in your backyard. Pitch a tent for the night or create a firepit (safely!) to enjoy and roast marshmallows. Find bird, bug, or plant guides and try to see how many you can find in your home or on walks.

• V isit places like Archery Outfitters or The Outdoor Campus to learn more about nature and ways to enjoy the outdoors (hunting, fishing, canoeing, camping, etc.). • If you have a more indoor-loving child, create rewards systems that encourage time outside or find ways to bring what they love outdoors. If they love watching YouTube (like my son), find nature-related channels with challenges or activities that get them excited about outside. I’ve learned to be patient, present, involved, and a little wacky to show my kids that it is cool just to be you and enjoy what brings you happiness. For my family, that happiness is often found in the great outdoors. l

FREE FAMILY FUN

The Familyfest Fun Cruise is back for a third year! You will want to stay tuned to the Familyfest Facebook and Instagram pages and subscribe to our newsletter to stay up to date with all the fun happening as we lead up to the main event on Saturday, July 23rd from 9am – 2pm. What is the Familyfest Fun Cruise? The Familyfest Fun Cruise was created in 2020 as a new way for families to explore all that our amazing community has to offer for families! From 9am-2pm on July 23rd, families can spend the day together cruising to area businesses and organizations to participate in activities, enter to win prizes, and get some deals!

Does our family have to cruise to all of the locations listed? No! Your family can go to as many or as few stops as you would like and in any order! Many families will start at Stop #1 (Sanford Wellness Center on Oxbow) to receive their FREE swag bags (to the first 500 families, 1 per family) and then head to the stops that interest your family!

How do I know what stops might fit our family? Our listings, starting on page 25, will have a colored dot to signify what age groups these stops might cater to. Use the key at the top of the listings to search for the perfect stops for your family.

What is the cost of the Familyfest Fun Cruise? Absolutely nothing! It’s true! The Familyfest Fun Cruise is completely free for all families participating. Some stops may have additional items/services available for purchase, but there is no purchase required to visit each stop.

That’s a pretty fancy unicorn I see on the Familyfest Fun Cruise marketing! Who is that? Fancy is the super amazing Familyfest mascot. She likes to travel around the Sioux Empire and meet as many friends as possible every year!

What is the Familyfest Fun Cruise Digital Passport? At each stop location, there will be a QR Code for your family to scan. When you scan the code, you will be asked to enter your name, email and answer a question about that stop. Every time you scan a different QR Code and answer the question, you will earn one entry into our Familyfest Fun Cruise drawings for hundreds of dollars in prizes! Don’t forget you earn one entry each time you scan a new QR code at each location and answer the question, so have fun cruising to as many stops as you can! Thanks to Black Hills Federal Credit Union for their Digital Passport sponsorship.

We saved the best for last! Want to cruise in style? Through July 12th, you can enter to win one of the two “Cruising to Family Fun” giveaway packages from our friends at Voyage Federal Credit Union. It Takes a Village:

Creating Partnership with Parents When we think of child care, what comes to mind? Dropping your child off and picking them up day after day. Diapers, bottles, playtime. Going through the routine. This mentality is the norm, but it does not have to be that way. Our new view on caring for each child is working side by side with parents and learning and growing together. The old saying, “it takes a village,” is not too far off, and the education of children no longer lies solely in the hands of the caregiver or teacher.

At Apple Tree, we are trying to change the mindset of parents to highlight partnering with us, the caregivers, in the raising of the child. This is why we are implementing “Partnership with Parents.”

can lead to a greater opportunity for success in early childhood education. If there is strong communication and a balanced relationship between parent and caregiver, conversations will be open and understanding.

According to a book written by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), entitled Families and Educators Together, “Families and teachers both have information that can be exchanged as part of an ongoing reciprocal relationship. Together, you support the healthy development and learning of each child. Research shows that children thrive when their families are involved in their care and education.” We stand by this same principle. We believe that not only involvement, but opportunities for education are important for parents. As we kick off our new campaign, we’re starting with training for parents and caregivers. We are partnering with Sanford Child Services and giving parents a chance to learn alongside our staff. Our first class deals with Positive Guidance. We hope to grow this program and incorporate different ways parents can be involved and create a well-rounded experience for their child. Partnering with families can also make it easier to address challenging behaviors and early intervention with missed milestones or lack of development. Early detection of a child’s specific needs

While child care used to be viewed solely as diapers and playtime, we now know it is so much more. It is an early learning environment in which the children in our care have the opportunity to learn and meet their milestones in a well-rounded capacity. We hope our partnering plan will take off and become a model for other programs. In the meantime, we will continue our quest for family relationships and partnerships with parents. l

KEEPING YOUR FAMILY COMFORTABLE

by Foley’s Heating & Air Conditioning

Better HVAC, Better Equity As a homeowner, your house is likely your greatest asset. Maintaining that status typically involves periodic upgrades, remodels, and upkeep. One upgrade that can significantly impact the value of your home: the HVAC system. Install a smart thermostat. The programmability ensures more efficient management of your home’s temperature and allows for much greater efficiency when not at home. Home appraisers have started to consider smart devices when evaluating houses for sale. A smart thermostat upgrade on your HVAC system can boost your home value by over five percent. Incorporate a zoning system that allows for temperature control within certain areas of the house. This is an excellent way to minimize hot and cold spots and focus your HVAC energy usage on the most used areas in your home. Plus, zoning reduces energy consumption.

Upgrading your HVAC filtration system will ensure increased air filtration in your home to enhance the indoor air quality and provide everyone in your house with clean air. Another way to increase your home equity is to adopt the concept of an Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV) in your HVAC system upgrade. This system works well when incorporated with an efficient filtering system to improve indoor air quality and protect against allergens. It removes all dust, animal dander, and other allergens. An effective ERV exchanges stale indoor air for fresh outdoor air. The process continues without energy loss compared to methods like opening your windows or doors. You can use the energy saved by the system to keep your house at the temperature you prefer. Improving the energy consumption efficiency of your HVAC system is another way of increasing your home’s equity. There are a wide variety of energy-efficient air conditioners and heating systems in production today. These units can deliver excellent results at a low energy consumption rate. If you’re thinking of putting your house on the market, it’s nice to know that people who are looking to buy homes will be happy to pay premium rates for dwellings that have energy-efficient systems. l
