For families, summer is not just a season; it’s an opportunity for children to explore, learn, and grow outside the confines of school walls. And what better way to make the most of this time than through summer camps and programs available in our community?

This month, we’ve transformed our March issue into our Summer Camp Guide, reflecting the evolving interests and needs of families like yours.

Whether your child is drawn to the wonders of STEAM, yearns for outdoor adventures, thrives in the world of sports, finds purpose in the company of animals, or requires specialized attention, rest assured, there’s a camp tailored just for them.

With 38 camps featured, the choices may seem overwhelming at first glance. Grab a pen, circle the camps that ignite your child’s curiosity, and plan a spectacular summer.

Read why our summer camp cover stars love summer camps on page 12. These five local kids are a great example of how much fun your child can have at camp this summer.

We are thrilled to unveil our brand-new website, designed with you in mind. As we continue to evolve and adapt to meet the changing needs of families in our community, this digital platform serves as your ultimate resource, offering a wealth of information, inspiration, and practical guidance.

Anderson-Smith Therapy Institute

How is therapy at ASTI different than school based services?

Because we are a private practice, we are not bound to the qualifying standards that are required for services in school districts. Our therapists evaluate children through a medical model using the most up-to-date research for medically necessary therapy. In addition, families can utilize insurance and Medicaid to pay for services at our clinic.

Private therapy is a great addition to school-based therapy services! Our therapists often meet with school therapists to discuss treatment and goals. Being part of your child’s team of educators is a top priority for ASTI!

ASTI offers free 15-minute phone screenings with therapists. We would love to talk with you about your child’s needs!

Once Upon A Wish Travel

Why use a travel planner when going to Disney?

For complimentary planning services! Package booking (with price maintenance), dining reservations, stroller rentals, and customized daily itineraries are just a few of the services I provide for FREE!

I will help you navigate all your questions about going to Disney with your family. Disney can be a whole new world; rest on my expertise! Let me know what kind of character dining experience your family is looking for or what you need in a hotel, and I’ll book the perfect place.

How do I get my family really excited about taking photos together?

1. Talk to them and ask for input. Get them involved in deciding what to wear and choose your battles! Encourage them to see it as a family activity.

2. Plan something fun to do afterward. Consider a family outing to make the whole day something to get excited about.

3. Keep it real. Sometimes, the best pictures are the ones where everyone is just being themselves. Embrace your family’s quirks and focus on having a good time.

Or maybe you’re overwhelmed thinking about your young children on such a big trip. As your travel planner, I’ll make sure to help you both maximize your time and prioritize what’s best for your little ones. Sioux Falls, SD onceuponawishtravel.com/ mary-buermann

4. Share the photos afterward. Decide which photos you want to keep as a family. Showing how happy the pictures make you can help your family understand why it’s important to capture these memories.

and Outside

In today’s tech-dominated world, children are often immersed in screens, spending less time outside. However, being in the outdoors is more than just enjoying the fresh air; it’s an essential component of healthy childhood development. Learn about the crucial reasons why kids should spend more time outside.

Physical Health Benefits

Outdoor play promotes physical activity, which is essential for children’s overall health and well-being. Running, jumping, and climbing support heart health, and exposure to natural sunlight helps the body produce Vitamin D, essential for our immune system and bone health. Being involved in outdoor activities like hiking and biking when young can help create healthy habits for a lifetime.

Mental and Emotional Well-being

Nature has a remarkable ability to calm the mind. Time spent outdoors allows children to decompress from the stresses of daily life, promoting mental clarity and emotional resilience. Studies have shown that spending time in the outdoors reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression in children, fostering a sense of peace and contentment. Plus, outdoor play encourages creativity and imagination as children explore the natural world and engage in unstructured play.

Connection with the Environment

Spending time outside cultivates appreciation and care for the environment. Whether searching for wildlife, planting seeds in a garden, or exploring local parks, children develop a deeper understanding of the world around them while outside. These experiences help grow the values of conservation and environmental responsibility. If we want our children to care about the world around them, we need to teach them why it matters.

Social Development

Outdoor play provides abundant opportunities for social interaction and skill-building. Whether playing team sports, building an epic fort together, or simply sharing stories under a tree, children develop crucial social skills such as communication, cooperation, and conflict resolution. Allowing our children to play unstructured with others helps build their problem-solving skills and gives them the space to learn how to entertain themselves.

Look for ways to spend more time outside this year as a family. Plan a weekly picnic, check out local parks, or sign up for some of the fantastic summer camps listed in our 2024 Summer Camp Guide! l
