Ties or Tutus? Blue or pink? Mister or miss? Ties or tutus? Anticipating the sex of your newborn is one of the most exciting parts of a pregnancy. You can finally pick out baby names and buy frilly tutus or little bow ties. Bring your closest friends and family together to celebrate this milestone in your growing family. Guests walked into the gender-neutral room at Hilton Garden Inn Downtown and immediately the curiosity struck. Yellow, gray, and white lit up the room with a custom party. Everything from the invitations and baby ballots to the straw flags and tassels were designed and created by K Design+Events with attention to every detail. The baby ballot station had yellow and white tassel tutus and paper ties draping from the high-top table. Add a splash of color to the table with a vase filled with fresh lemons. We wanted to create a fun and exciting way for all of the guests to be included in the gender reveal. As they sat on their crisp, white resin chairs from Ideal Wedding and Events, they pondered what to check on the baby ballot.

6|

November 2014 | thehoodmagazine.com

The confetti party poppers were placed at each guest’s place setting, waiting to reveal the pink or blue confetti hidden inside. To make sure the guests didn’t peek, we added gray confetti to the top. 1…2…3…Pink shades of confetti sprinkled the table while giggles and happy tears filled the room. The mommy-to-be had a craving for Rice Krispies Treats® throughout her pregnancy; therefore, we decided to take this craving and put a twist on the very popular cake-cutting trend for gender reveals. A multi-layered cake created from Rice Krispies Treats® and coated with a homemade marshmallow fluff frosting had the revealing color unseen within the creative cake. Make your reveal your own! We added a custom cake topper with mini tassel garlands of ties and tutus. Create a memorable gender reveal with a twist on the ordinary. Make it fun for the guests, and let them get involved in this unforgettable way! Dazzle your friends and family with a visually appealing layout, fun party favors, and a customized reveal as unique as your growing bundle of joy. n

Cute & CLASSY

Those two lines on a pregnancy test create one of the most enjoyable moments in life. The rush of emotions when finding out that you are expecting is beyond measure. Being a mom, I can tell you that rush is like no other. You have a living being inside of you, growing and changing every single day. You immediately go into planning mode. You plan the nursery, delivery, hair color, height, and even the closet organization. But, before you can plan all of these things, you must decide whether or not you will find out the sex of your baby. Life is full of celebrations, and many people are choosing to celebrate with their closest friends and family when the sex of their baby is revealed. A gender reveal party or photo shoot are perfect ways to include people you love most in the emotions that surround whether or not “it’s a boy” or “it’s a girl.” Nathan and I chose to find out the sex of our baby together in a private setting at Josiah’s Café, captured by our friend and photographer Lauren Neff of Picturesque Photography. We let our friend, Steve, owner of Josiah’s, open the envelope with the gender of our baby in order to surprise us with cupcakes that would reveal the secret!

SHOP. LEARN. GROW. Speakers, Seminars, & more!

There are so many fun and unique ways to announce the sex of your baby. From balloons floating out of a box, kites flying in the sky, biting into a cupcake, cutting a cake or having unmarked cans of spray paint or silly string sprayed on canvas by your guests – the ideas are endless. Get your family and friends involved at a party by having them choose a bow or mustache when they walk in as their “vote” to hang on a board. Will it be bucks or does, pink or blue, mustaches or lip gloss, bow ties or tutus? Create a theme that fits your unique personality.

Morning Sickness Relief

Lotions

Getting her something practical may not be the most exciting gift in the world, but she will definitely appreciate the thoughtfulness towards her needs. When the nausea sets in during her first trimester, give her the gift of relief with some Morning Wellness Tea, Happy Mama Spray, or Preggie Pop Drops. The ginger-minty tea is not only tasty, but will also ease her sickness as she sips. The Preggie Pop Drops are great for on the go – whenever she starts to feel sick, she can just pop one in her mouth for some tasty queasiness relief. The Happy Mama Spray is a naturally uplifting aromatherapy mist. She can spray it on her body or in the room for a scent that will ease her upset tummy.

With her body changing, lotions are a practical and thoughtful gift that will help her to feel good as her belly starts to expand. Stretch mark prevention cream or all-over moisturizing body creams are good gifts for a mommy as her skin begins to stretch. A skincare gift set will give her everything she needs and make her feel special!

Diaper Bag Diaper bags are getting more and more stylish and are not only a necessity for baby diapers and bottles, but can also be a cute accessory for mom. Surprise her with a bag early on so she can start stocking it and getting it ready for baby. n

Belly Stickers You may have seen the monthly stickers that go on a baby’s onesie to take pictures in and track their growth. Well there are also cute stickers available for pregnant bellies! She will be able to track her and her baby’s growth and get excited, feeling proud about her growing belly!

She will like getting started on this early, tracking thoughts and feelings during the pregnancy, and let’s face it, once the baby arrives, she might not have much time to go back and fill it in.

When she finds out she is going to be a new mom, it can be very exciting and maybe even a little scary or overwhelming. You want to get her a gift to celebrate this blessing, but what should you get her? Here are a few ideas:

Adapted Toys for Children with Special Needs Take a few steps into your local department store and you’ll know the Christmas gift-buying season is in full swing. Finding the right toy and getting it under the tree can be a difficult task. This task can be even more difficult if you happen to have a child on your list who has difficulty making today’s button-infused toys work. For many, the solution can be adapted toys. Toy adaptations sometimes consist of larger levers or paddles that allow a person to compensate for less controlled movement. More common in today’s adapted toys are switch adaptations. These toys are battery operated and have been modified with a switch port. The switch port bypasses the manufacturer’s activation button and allows a separate, larger switch to be plugged into the toy. The larger switch allows children who have difficulty operating the toys the usual way to use the larger surface area of a separate switch. A second advantage of switch-adapted toys is the switch can be used in any position and with any body part the child is best at using. There are limitations to the types of

12 |

November 2014 | thehoodmagazine.com

toys that can be adapted, but if you know where to look, you can usually find something that your child enjoys AND can operate on his or her own. In most instances, you will have to plan ahead and do your toy shopping online. A few of the more notable sites with the largest selection of toys are enablingdevices.com, especialneeds.com and enablemart.com. For more selection and a lower price, many toys can be adapted as a DIY project. Supplies for adapting will typically cost less than the mark-up of one ready-made adapted toy. The bonus is, once the supplies have been purchased, additional toys can usually be adapted for less than a dollar. The process starts by opening up the toy in the area of the existing button. This can involve ripping a seam in a plush toy like an Elmo or removing a few screws. Once you have the toy open, you find the wires going to the button and modify the wires to allow a switch port to be connected. The remainder of the process involves a few simple steps, a small amount of soldering, and then putting the toy back together. n

Keeping Winter Break Fun and Educational

The winter break serves as a great opportunity for families to spend quality time together, but with such an extended time away from the school routine, it’s important to engage kids in fun activities that will keep their minds focused on learning. We’ve compiled a list of our favorite activities to keep kids thinking over the break!

1. Project Pioneer: Snow Candy Anyone who grew up reading Laura Ingalls Wilder books longed for a taste of what it was like to live life on the prairie. Make your own adventure on the prairie right in your backyard by making snow candy as depicted by Laura. Heat equal parts molasses and brown sugar on the stove to 245 degrees Fahrenheit, which is the ball stage for candy. Now the fun part! Head out to the backyard and drizzle the mixture onto clean snow, where it will harden within five minutes. Let the kids predict what will happen. Science in the snow! Visit TM

on the WEBuing

2. Book and Movie Marathon

There are so many great books that have been made into movies. Paddington will be in theaters December 2014! Why not pick up the classic book by Michael Bond at your local library and

ntin for more on co holiday education over break.

hit the theater with the whole family. Do you have fond memories of Paddington as a child? Share some of your childhood favorites with your children.

3. Baking up a Lesson Winter break lends itself to an array of delicious baked goods. Invite the kids into the kitchen and turn your cookie baking into a lesson in math. Practice fractions with measuring, figure quantities with multiplication, and use division to share with your family and neighbors. Nothing makes math sweeter than getting to eat the end result!

4. Be Dramatic Let your child’s mind run free by setting out a variety of materials to make puppets. Make simple popsicle stick puppets with markers, paint, glue, scrap fabric, and gems or buttons. Have children create several puppets to put on a show. Have kids write a play using all of their puppets to act it out. Guide them through the process. Where is the play set? What is the theme? Give the TV a break and act it out! Make the winter break meaningful this year by giving your kids the gift of learning – it will last a lifetime. n

kids for teaching ring the give back du s. holiday

Shopping for friends and family – and trying to find the perfect gift for each and every one of them – is one of the most common sources of holiday stress. While the act of giving someone a unique and thoughtful gift brings great joy, the process of finding this kind of gift can seem impossible. The longer and harder you look, the less luck you have. Soon, it’s holiday crunch time. What do you do? Whether you are a detail-oriented planner who purchased gifts for this year’s Christmas last December or a last-minute shopper who has found yourself still wrapping up Christmas shopping on many past Christmas Eves, ‘Hood’s Holiday Gift Guide is here to help. All of the listings are from local businesses, meaning you won’t find yourself paying an additional cost for overnight shipping. There’s something for everyone on your list! by Jackie Jockheck, Marketing Director, Avera Health Plans

Recent updates with the Affordable Care Act provide more opportunities than ever to individuals and families who need health insurance. Open enrollment for 2015 coverage begins November 15 and will end February 15, 2015.

Here are some helpful tips to identify the best health plan for you: 1. Look beyond the premium payment. You will want to find a premium that works with your monthly budget. The benefits within the plan will make a difference when it comes to seeing your doctor. Review and compare the co-pays, coinsurance, deductible, and out-of-pocket maximums to really see how the plan will impact your family budget.

2. Make sure you understand how much you will pay when you go to see a doctor. A co-pay is a fixed amount paid when you receive a service. Coinsurance is a percentage of the costs for services you will pay. You will pay the full amount for the visit with an HSA-compatible plan until the out-of-pocket maximum is reached. Remember, no matter what the plan, most preventive services will be free.

3. Identify a deductible and out-of-pocket maximum you can manage if something

should happen to you or one of your dependents. The deductible is the amount you owe for

parent

Identify the Best Health Insurance Plan

health care services your plan covers before your health insurance or plan begins to pay. Your out-of-pocket costs include expenses for services that are not reimbursed by insurance such as deductibles, co-pays and coinsurance.

29

4. Network is important and is cost-effective. A great health care team will identify best pricing to reimburse you for a health care service or procedure. You may get a better monthly premium with one health insurance carrier, but if they don’t have the network of providers who understand the benefits of working together to provide you a better network, you will pay more. With a team of health care providers and health insurance working together, you will pay less.

What if you choose to not have health insurance? The penalty for not having health insurance is based on your income. You will pay either a flat rate of $325 per person or 2 percent of your household income — whichever is greater. There are many resources to help you select the best plan. Find someone you can trust and who is educated on the latest updates regarding the Affordable Care Act. n

Family gifts: Similar to drawing names, this alternative can save the hustle of gathering up one-on-one. Consider a pack of movie tickets and restaurant gift cards for family nights out. Memberships to local museums, zoos, pools, or water parks can be a gift that lasts all year long. If the family is planning a trip in the next calendar year, a suitcase packed with gas cards, travelers checks, and items applicable to the destination can be a fun taste of what’s to come.

Gifts of service: As a family, choose

a charity or organization you are passionate about and commit to donating time or money to the cause. It is important to teach children the value of giving to others in need. As a family, go and serve at a soup kitchen, organize a neighborhood toy drive and donate to local charities, or adopt a family you know that may be struggling and deliver gifts on Christmas Eve. Children will learn that sometimes the greatest gift is blessing others. Once your family settles on the gift-giving rules to apply, be sure to stick to them! It is important to set clear expectations for all to follow. Be sure to use a flexible measuring stick – as your idea of value most likely will differ from others in the group. Also, remember that what works for your side of the family may differ from your in-laws, so operate from a place of grace and understanding. Homemade Goodie Gifts Why not fill your family’s and friends’ stomachs instead of their houses this holiday season? Making your own holiday gifts memorable and personal can be simple, efficient, and cost effective. All you need is a little bit of time to think, plan, and execute your goodie gifts. This is a quick homemade gift-making guide, and I have broken it down into four simple steps!

1. Pick Your Goodie. Don’t overthink this first step.

4. Timing and Delivery. I recommend delivering gifts in person. I also don’t think a gift needs to be given on the actual holiday itself. If your goodie is only fresh for a couple of days, time it with when you will be able to deliver them. If it is a freezer-friendly item, make sure to note that somewhere on your packaging. Be creative. Have fun. Spread cheer. n

What are some of your specialties? What signature dish or treat are you always asked to bring? Answering these questions should spark some creativity on what your loved ones would truly appreciate (and gobble up). I am also a big fan of going the semi-homemade route. For instance, pairing your homemade jam with some bread from a local bakery, or maybe one of your secret recipes (think cute, colorful index card) with a key ingredient. Whatever you decide to give, it should be something you are fairly comfortable with making multiples of.

Visit

TM

o thenWEB

for these an homemade gid other fts can make. you

2. Plan Your Packaging. Once you have selected your goodie, you will need to decide on how to package it. There are so many cute, clever, and affordable packaging options when it comes to containers, goodie bags, labels and whatnot. Some of my favorite places to look are World Market, Dollar Tree (online), and Oriental Trading (online). Again, keep this simple. The real treat is on the inside, so your packing may get tossed aside when it is all said and done.

3. Execute. Once you have your goodie and your packaging picked out, do a test run and see how long it takes you to make a complete one. Take that total times the number you are going to make, and carve out an afternoon for yourself to create them all. This is a great project to include kids. Let them decorate the labels or boxes. After all, the gift is from them, too.

FEATURED Farmer

Morgan Kontz During this time of year it’s hard to not be thankful…wouldn’t you say? With the holidays quickly approaching, and as I spend time combining corn fields this fall with my husband, Jason, and our two-year-old daughter, Elliette, I realize how truly blessed I am.

I am blessed to be a farmer, and live the lifestyle I do. Whether it’s growing corn and soybeans that will be fed to livestock, or raising beef cattle, it is a privilege and an honor to grow food that will feed families across the world.

Morgan & her family

I am extremely thankful that my family has a part in raising the food that will be on your kitchen tables this holiday season. The meals that will bring your families together. The meals that will create conversations and laughter. The meals that will make memories. I am blessed to share my story as a CommonGround volunteer through my blog. As passionate as I am about agriculture, people find it hard to believe I didn’t grow up on a farm. In

fact, I never imagined I would be a farmer. I moved from a city in Indiana to a farm in South Dakota when I met my husband, who happens to be a third-generation farmer. I started my blog “Stories of a First Generation Farm Wife” over three years ago when I became a volunteer in an organization called CommonGround. CommonGround is all about starting a conversation between women who grow food, and the women who buy it. It’s a conversation based on our personal experience as farmers, but also on science and research. My blog has been a wonderful avenue to connect with consumers across the country about the food we raise on our farm. I love to answer questions about all sorts of food issues. If you ever want to know if grass fed beef is more nutri-

tious, or about the difference between organic food and conventional food, or anything else, please reach out to me. I’d love to hear from you. More than anything, I am blessed to be a mother. It has been incredible to watch my daughter grow up over the last couple of years. Working from home on the farm means I get to spend a lot of quality time with her. Whether she’s riding along in the tractor or helping us bottle-feed a calf, she is our little sidekick. She brings so much joy to our lives, and we can’t wait to continue to expand our little family. Like many families, my family comes together at the kitchen table for meals, conversation, and laugher. This is especially true around the holidays. I’ve put together some of our favorite holiday meal recipes. I hope you enjoy them as much as we do!

Morgan’s RECIPES

CLASSIC GREEN BEAN CASSEROLE Ingredients • 1 can (10 3/4 oz) Campbell’s® Condensed Cream of Mushroom Soup or Campbell’s® Condensed 98% Fat Free Cream of Mushroom Soup or Campbell’s® Healthy Request® Condensed Cream of Mushroom Soup • 1/2 c milk • 1 tsp soy sauce • 1 dash black pepper • 4 c cooked cut green beans • 1 1/3 c French’s® French Fried Onions

Directions

BEEF BRISKET While our family loves a good turkey or ham for the holidays as much as the next, we try to mix it up a bit by preparing this delicious beef brisket recipe. After all, we raise beef on our farm, so it just makes sense.

Ingredients • • • • • • • •

2 cans of beef broth 1 1/2 c of soy sauce Juice of 2 lemons 5-6 tbsp of minced garlic (I use 5) 2-3 tbsp of liquid smoke (I use 3) 7-10 oz beef brisket 3 splashes of Tabasco® Seasoned salt (optional)

Directions Beef brisket is a cut of meat that is not often thought of, but if cooked right it can become a delicious favorite for you and your family! This piece of meat comes from the chest of the cow, so it can be a rather tough piece of meat. But, if cooked slowly

and in a moist environment, it will be mouthwatering and tender. Mix all ingredients together in a roasting pan, minus the seasoned salt. Place your brisket right in the middle of the roasting pan and, using a spoon, pour some of the marinade over the brisket. If you are a seasoned salt person, sometimes I do a light rub all over the brisket before placing it in the marinade—not too much, just enough for a little extra flavor! Cover the roasting pan with aluminum foil and place in the refrigerator for 24-48 hours. When you are ready to cook, set your oven at 300 degrees and bake your brisket for 40 minutes per pound (a 10-pound brisket will take 400 minutes, just over 6.5 hours).

38 | November 2014 | thehoodmagazine.com

Stir the soup, milk, soy sauce, black pepper, beans, and 2/3 cup onions in a 1 1/2-quart casserole. Bake at 350°F for 25 minutes or until the bean mixture is hot and bubbling. Stir the bean mixture. Sprinkle with the remaining onions. Bake for 5 minutes or until the onions are golden brown.

Directions Add potatoes, chicken broth, and milk to crock pot. Cook on low for 4-6 hours. Mash potatoes. Mix in sour cream and cream cheese. Enjoy!

CRANBERRY, RASPBERRY, APPLE PIE Ingredients • 9-in double pie crust • 3 c Granny Smith Apples, peeled and chopped
 • 2 c whole cranberries, coarsely chopped
 • 1 (10 oz) pkg frozen raspberries, thawed • 1/2 c sugar
 • 3 tbsp quick-cooking tapioca

• 1 /4 tsp almond extract
 • 1 large egg
 • 1 tbsp water

Spoon filling into unbaked pie crust. Place top crust over filling. Fold top edge under bottom crust. Flute.

• Sugar for sprinkling

Cut slits in top crust. Beat egg white with one tbsp water. Brush on surface of pie. Sprinkle with sugar. Cover edge of pie crust with aluminum foil to prevent over-browning. Bake 25 minutes. Remove foil. Bake an additional 25-35 minutes or until filling in center is bubbly. Serve warm.

Directions Heat oven to 375 degrees. Combine apples, cranberries and raspberries in large bowl. Mix sugar, tapioca, cinnamon, salt, and almond extract in a small bowl. Add to fruit mixture and toss well.

3 Keys for

Surviving Family Gatherings During the Holidays Something interesting happens every time my family gets together, whether it is for Thanksgiving, Christmas, or another celebration. My two sisters and I fall into the roles we had when we were children. This is in spite of the fact that we are all currently in our thirties. My older sister likes to be the event and menu planner. As the middle child, I avoid making waves and feel like no one is paying attention to me. My youngest sister has been challenging the long-held family belief that as the baby she can’t be put in charge of important things. If you need someone to paint your house, plan and landscape your property, or dig out and build switchback trails in a national park, my younger sister is the woman for the job. So, she also assures the family that she can make her special beans and cornbread dinner for all of us with no problem. This event a few years ago made me start to think about family roles and how to approach them.

Key Number 1: Recognize the role you play. Are you the peacemaker? The responsible one? The family clown? The overachiever? If you have a significant other,

he or she may be especially adept at recognizing how you change when you are around your family.

Key Number 2: Consider what is helpful and not helpful about your childhood role. What life experiences formed your role? In what ways has your role helped you? In what ways might your role be limiting you? How have you changed? How has your family changed?

Key Number 3: Focus on relating to each person in your family as an individual. A lot has changed since you were a little kid. Your older brother may have learned how to loosen up and have some fun. Your irresponsible baby sister may have found her vocation and a meaningful career. You might enjoy relating to your parents in more of a peer relationship as adults. Whether you see your family only on holidays or on a more regular basis, each person is changing and growing. Trying to get to know each family member individually can change your relationships with each other and the family dynamic as a whole. n

Well, it’s that time of year again. Family gatherings, busy stores, to-do lists miles long, etc. As this season quickly approaches, children begin to repeat certain phrases such as “I want that” or “Get me that.” Sometimes, all it takes is a toy commercial on TV or that dreaded Toys R Us Christmas catalog. So, as parents, we know we can’t and shouldn’t get our kids everything they want for Christmas. But, it’s hard not to when we get into the spirit of the season. Parents must remember they aren’t depriving their child of an essential item but teaching them valuable lessons.

• The difference between needs and wants. This is a hard lesson for some adults, too. We want to teach our children that needs come first and then wants. So, yes, they may get a package of underwear in their stocking because that’s a need. This teaches good spending habits and budgeting.

• Treasure relationships more than stuff. Life isn’t about the material things we own, but about the relationships we create and maintain. We need to teach our children to find joy and satisfaction in the people we interact with, not the stuff we pass the time with. This teaches the importance of social skills and human interaction.

•S elfishness is a real danger in our society.

The Lesson Behind Saying NO ized to make do with what we have but instead to get the newest model when the current one works fine. Children are growing up in an era of excessiveness. A few wellchosen toys for under the tree are better than a slew of presents that sit in the closet untouched for months.

• Abundance is not a given. As parents, we know our community has a population that struggles to feed and clothe their children and can’t even begin to imagine how they are going to supply them with Christmas presents. Show your children this world through direct contact throughout the year. Volunteer for a charity, or sponsor a family for the holidays. This teaches community and global awareness. Christmas can be a unique learning experience for your child about the true meaning of giving and kindness. It’s up to us as parents to teach these invaluable lessons. n

Playing It Safe: Toys and Children’s Eye Safety It’s all fun and games until…

you probably know the old familiar saying. The holidays are filled with anticipation of gifts and new toys. When making decisions for selecting new toys, parents and loved ones need to choose toys that are safe and age-appropriate for children. So, in general, what toys should parents avoid? Toys with pointed, sharp or rough edges or pieces. Toys that should be avoided completely or only permitted with close parental supervision are: • G uns are the worst offenders of eye safety. Year after year, BB guns, paintball and pellet guns, as well as missile firing toys, continue to top the danger list.

This holiday season, you can help your child by looking for toys to help with: • building eye-hand coordination. • shape and size discrimination (important for reading).

the top six th ings parents are do ing without even right knowing it.

• T oy weapons in general are an invitation to eye injury. Watch out specifically for projectile toys with parts that shoot out or fly off as they can be extremely dangerous. Toys with sharp points, including darts and bows and arrows, are all hazards to children’s eyes.

• general movement skills (for everything from writing to sports).

• L aser pointers can cause retinal damage in certain situations and should be used with extreme caution.

Have a fun, safe, and healthy holiday season by encouraging your children to round out their activities with toys and games that encourage vision development. If you find your child avoids or has difficulty with these types of games and activities, it could be a sign of an underlying vision problem. n

While children may be asking for the latest computer and video games, there are some tried and true toys which children love, are safe, AND help your child build vital learning skills. If your child spends too much time on a computer or tablet (and add to that prolonged TV watching), he or she won’t develop many of the underlying visual skills required for academic success. Just as motor skills and learning and cognitive skills require development, vision also requires development and can benefit from a variety of toys and activities. Developing a child’s visual skills is critical to success in the classroom.

Lessen the Stress

this Holiday Season Dressed in their Sunday best, your entire family gathers around the table. They ‘ooh’ and ‘aah’ as you place the Christmas ham down on the immaculately decorated table. You’ve had presents bought and wrapped for months now, all hiding upstairs waiting to be placed under the tree for the morning. You take your place at the head of the table as your mother-in-law whispers in your ear, “You’ve done it again. Another perfect holiday.”

Make it yours

And then you wake up. It’s probably more likely you’ll see this picture of perfection in a television movie than in actual real life. But for many moms and dads, striving for this dream of ‘the perfect holiday’ can add inordinate amounts of unnecessary stress to a time of year that is supposed to be dedicated to joy.

• Pay attention to your needs, and don’t diminish your feelings.

If you are beginning to feel the weight of the upcoming holiday season, stop and think about what is truly important and determine what is making you feel pressured. Is it gift buying? Hosting? All your family together in one room? Use the below tips to help combat the stress and make this holiday one of your best.

Get support

• Set a budget and stick to it. • Tell your kids no when what they want is too expensive. • Show your love through personal gifts. • Make homemade presents. • Share your feelings with a handwritten note.

Organize • Make a list of things to do and events to attend. • Delegate. Don’t think you have to do everything on your own. • It’s okay to say no. Don’t try and cram everything in.

• Start new traditions. • Try volunteering at a food bank or donating toys to families in need.

You’re important

• Get enough sleep, food, and exercise. • Make room for ‘Me’ time by walking or meditating. • Take breaks from group activities. Holidays can be a time when we experience an increase in sadness as well, particularly if there has been a loss in our lives. This may mean a change in our usual holiday traditions, and change can be very hard. It’s important to keep your heart open and remember that it is okay to experience some joy without feeling guilty. If you are feeling overwhelmed by the pressures of the holidays, don’t keep it inside. Thinking that you’ll just get over it or it’s not a big deal isn’t healthy. Don’t be embarrassed about asking for help. Talk to your spouse, a loved one, or close friend about your feelings. If you are unable to manage your stress or are overwhelmed by sadness, consider making an appointment with your doctor, or get a referral to see a counselor. Your family would much rather have you happy than an illusion of the perfect holiday. n

for the Holiday Season The holiday season is quickly approaching! Are you prepared? When it comes to holiday shopping, the number one rule is always to create a budget and stick to it; do not venture from the plan! If you have a habit of spending too much, even with a budget, try having a goal and offer yourself a certain small amount of extra just in case. You’ll still be shopping on a budget, but you won’t feel as restricted. Starting with a Holiday Budget Plan is extremely important if you are on a very tight budget to begin with. Here are a few of my favorite ways to save during the season. 1. Make everything that you possibly can from scratch. Even if you are not typically the DIY sort of person, there are hundreds of ideas to be found on Pinterest for non-crafty people like you and me. Your family will love the gift because it was made specifically with them in mind, and it can potentially save you hundreds of dollars this season! 2. Never purchase anything online without first checking for a coupon. RetailMeNot.com is an excellent resource for online coupons. 3. Purchase your giftwrap, bags, tissue paper, cards, ribbons, boxes, tape, and decor at the dollar stores. 4. If you love to decorate, try incorporating more natural objects into your regular decor. Go outside and find some pinecones!

5. Encourage your children to make beautiful homemade decorations themselves. Your children will get a chance to be creative, and you’ll end up with some treasures to keep for future years.

6. Create “Deal Alerts” on SlickDeals.net to alert you when an item goes on sale. 7. You can create your own homemade wrapping paper by using craft paper and adding photos, plain white paper decorated by your children, the comic section of the newspaper, or by sewing your own gift bags. 8. Find free or low-cost activities to participate in as a family. Take part in a church program, volunteer at a shelter, attend a Christmas parade, or take a drive with some hot chocolate and look at Christmas lights together. 9. Pay close attention to Amazon.com’s Lightning Deals. They run several quick sales every hour starting about a week before Black Friday. 10. Use websites such as Ebates.com to get cash back on every online purchase, especially if you are planning on purchasing airline tickets for holiday traveling. If you are looking for anything specific this holiday season, feel free to follow the Shaina’s Deals Facebook page or group. Let me know what deal you’re searching for, and I will do my best to help you find it! n

THERE’S NO NEED TO WORRY ABOUT HORMONES IN FOOD. Just ask me. As a mother and grandmother, I’m concerned about food safety for my family. People ask me about hormones in meat. The fact is, pork and poultry farmers do not use added hormones. If you see pork or poultry in the grocery store labeled “no added hormones,” it’s simply a marketing tactic. There is no reason to pay extra for that label.
