Do not have T1D

Receive routine care at Sanford Health

Have a My Sanford Chart account

Children ages 6-17 who have a sibling with T1D or T1D antibodies may also join the study.

Corn Maze, Camping, and Fall Family Activities

For over 30 years, Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park has entertained families east of Sioux Falls. There have been many changes to the property over the years, but according to Owner Bruce Aljets, the keys to success have remained the same. “Providing an excellent experience still involves great activities, in a clean and well-kept environment,” Aljets said. “We’ve always focused on providing the best experience we can for our guests!”

The great news is with their Corn Maze attraction you don’t even have to stay the night to experience what the park has to offer. Open to the public, the Corn Maze at Jellystone Park offers over 7 acres of twists and turns to challenge guests and includes other great amenities including free mini-golf, use of the Jumping Pillow, and multiple playgrounds in the park. They also have multiple add-ons to your corn maze experience. “We’ve got multiple packages set up for you to have a full day of entertainment that you can choose.” Tie dye t-shirts, paintable ceramics, and laser tag highlight the available attractions you can add on to your corn maze ticket. And don’t forget to get some delicious snacks from the on-site food truck. Food service will be available on-site during corn maze hours throughout the fall. “We’re really set up for a full day of fun out here,” Aljets said. “We’ve really developed the corn maze experience to offer the same great fun that our campground guests are used to. It’s a great opportunity for people in the community to experience the park without having to stay.”

A new option for the 2023 corn maze season is the “Moonlight Maze.” According to park manager Ray Aljets, “We have some special activities

set up for select evenings at the corn maze this fall. Night time laser tag, silent disco, and even a campfire set up with s’more packages available for purchase. Check our website or socials for exact dates of Moonlight Maze.”

For 30 years, the Jellystone Park in Sioux Falls has provided quality family entertainment and camping, and they show no signs of slowing down.

According to Bruce, “We continue to investigate

new amenities to bring into the park to maximize our guest’s experience. This includes entertaining new hard amenities, activity experiences and new types of accommodation. We will always invest in the park to provide the best customer experience we can.”

Check out the park at www.jellystonesiouxfalls.com or the corn maze at www.siouxfallscornmaze.com The Corn Maze opens August 26th and is open Friday from 5-9 PM, Saturdays from Noon to 6 PM, and Sundays from Noon to 5 PM. Also, check out the Moonlight Maze on select evenings. If you have a large group of 20 or more, you can have the maze all to yourself by making a reservation with the park. l

Do you have a question for a Sioux Empire expert? ‘hood will be inviting area experts to weigh in and answer various questions from our readers.

Aquarium Director

How do I get the big blue butterflies to land on my flower?

We get this question a lot and the answer is that the blue morpho is not a nectar eating butterfly. Instead, they prefer to get their nutrients from decomposing fruit, fermented tree sap, fungi, and even decomposing animals in their native environment. We place fruit feeding baskets around our conservatory to provide these butterflies with the food they need.

If you’re looking to have a more up-close experience with our butterflies using a flower feeder, try spending your time around our smaller nectar feeding butterflies, especially those with long wings. These types of butterflies will get their food from flowers in our Conservatory as well as our artificial flowers.

ONLINE OR IN-STORE?

a guide for buying kids’ glasses

While it’s tempting to simply jump online to buy glasses for your children, it may not be the best choice.

Sure, online shopping lets you browse thousands of options quickly and easily whenever and wherever it’s convenient for you. You might even be able to find some online discounts to sweeten the deal.

But what happens when the glasses arrive and either they don’t fit right or the prescription is off? Both scenarios could happen and represent major drawbacks when you aren’t able to try them on before buying them.

TRY BEFORE YOU BUY.

When you shop at Visions Optical Boutique, the glasses you buy for your child (or yourself) are customized specifically for the wearer. This saves you the hassle of having to guess on size and having to return them if they don’t fit.

As for style, the glasses that looked great on a website may not look the same on your child’s face. It can be hard to judge color and style from a website versus seeing them on the person who will be wearing them.

Many online retailers may also not be able to accommodate your child’s specific prescription. Even slight prescription adjustments won’t allow for the best possible vision correction.

Quality can also be an issue with glasses purchased online. You never really know how sturdy the frame is until it’s delivered and you can hold it. The cheap price that attracted you? It may be the result of using low quality materials. Since kids are active, you want to make sure those glasses are made of material that resists breakage.

REMEMBER, VISION IS TIED TO LEARNING.

It’s important for childrens’ glasses to be accurate because the way they learn is very much tied to vision. Nothing beats the precision of getting your child’s vision measured by an eye doctor. If the pupillary distance measurement (PD) is incorrect, it can lead to eye strain and headaches.

Proper development of your child’s eyes can only be achieved through wearing the correct prescription. That’s why it’s important to work with a qualified optician.

PEACE OF MIND MEANS EVERYTHING.

Your child is more likely to wear their glasses consistently if they’re actively involved in selecting them. Buying glasses in our Optical Boutique allows your child the opportunity to try on several pairs before they find the one they love. We have plenty of patience to allow this to happen.

Finally, because kids are active, you want someone you can trust to be able to repair or replace damaged frames as quickly as possible.

Working with children is one of our specialties. For comprehensive care, including routine exams, vision therapy, and a large selection of frames just for kids, we’re happy to help.

Navigating Kids’ Birthdays Amidst the Holiday Season:

As the holiday season approaches, parents often find themselves juggling their children’s birthdays with the festivities of Thanksgiving and Christmas. While making these special occasions stand out amidst the holiday cheer may seem challenging, three moms share their insights and tips on creating memorable birthday celebrations during this busy time.

Heidi Dooley, whose son Ayden was born on December 26, recalls cleaning up all the Christmas decorations on Christmas Day night to ensure a clear distinction between Christmas and Ayden’s birthday. As Ayden grew older, they maintained separate gifts with birthday wrapping paper and hosted a birthday party. Having his birthday fall after Christmas means he doesn’t have to attend school, providing a perfect opportunity for special family activities.

Kelsey Bechtold, whose youngest son’s birthday falls on December 7, shares a clever approach to maintaining a clear separation between birthdays and Christmas. She decided to avoid putting up any Christmas decorations

or the tree until after her son’s birthday. This way, they have a dedicated celebration for him before diving into the festive season. Kelsey’s brother, born on December 27, humorously claims that having birthday presents under the Christmas tree “ruined his childhood.” This experience has inspired Kelsey to ensure her son feels the spotlight on his special day.

Elizabeth Carrell celebrates her daughter’s birthday on December 5 by creating a unique “birthday tree” adorned with pink decorations, cupcakes, and gifts, adding a touch of sparkle and excitement to her daughter’s room.

Elizabeth and her family choose a weekend closest to the actual birthday for birthday parties.

Although she admits her daughter sometimes envies summer birthdays with outdoor pool parties or bouncing houses, they make up for it with themed decorations and a special cake for her celebration to make her feel cherished.

26 | September/October 2023 | thehoodmagazine.com

Navigating Holiday Season Birthdays:

1. Plan: Organize the festivities to ensure holiday preparations don’t overshadow your child’s birthday celebration.

2. Establish clear boundaries: Separate birthday gifts from holiday presents.

3. Schedule wisely: Choose a date for the birthday party that works best for your family and close friends, even a little before or after the birthdate.

4. Embrace unique traditions: Develop special traditions that make your child’s birthday stand out, just like Elizabeth’s “birthday tree.”

5. Involve your child: Let them have a say in the celebration planning, activities, and theme to make them feel honored.

By following these tips and drawing inspiration from the experiences of Heidi, Kelsey, and Elizabeth, parents can create lasting memories and joyful celebrations for their children during the holiday season. l
