The Horse Report A comprehensive guide to successful horse breeding
By JULIE WEBB
Many horse owners have thought about breeding their favorite mares, but what does it take to become a responsible and successful breeder?
In The Thinking Horse Breeder, Acomprehensive guide to successful horse breeding, Jeanette Gower writes from her immense love of horses and shares hard-earned insights from her 50-plus years of hands-on experience.
The Thinking Horse Breeder explains in detail what it's really like to breed horses professionally. Gower offers a roadmap for deciding whether to do it, on what scale, and how to make it work.
Whether you are thinking about breeding horses, you're a new breeder, or a breeder who isn't getting the results you want-including financial results or the quality of horses you aspire to produce -The Thinking Horse Breeder offers the info you'll need to define and set your goals, evaluate and reevaluate them, and devise better strategies to attain the type of success you want.
Gower covers an impressive range of topics: why or why not to become a breeder, how to get started in the business, characteristics that make breeders successful, breeding, breaking and training advice, first aid information, business advice, and suggestions for dealing with the physical and emotional stresses of running a horse breeding business and the family issues that can crop up.
She even discusses the challenges of aging horse breeders and selling your business or passing it on to future generations.
Writing in a straightforward, down-to-earth manner, as if she is talking to you in person, the author gives you the straight talk needed to survive and thrive in a competitive, often emotional business that demands your attention and commitment all day, all night, every day and night.
One thing that impresses me is the way Gower lists questions for readers to ponder, so readers can determine their own goals and how they want to measure their results.
This is not a book that insists you duplicate what the author has done. Instead, she encourages you to define your own purpose and mis-
sion statement, then work toward what you want to accomplish.
The Thinking Horse Breeder stresses the importance of making the right choices for the right reasons. Producing poor quality horses, not treating them well, or simply churning out more equines are things she strongly counsels against, and she explains why.
Gower's generosity toward and respect for other breeders shines throughout this book. She quotes them, often in long passages, letting other professionals share their experiences. You'll have chances to learn from some of the most successful horse breeders in Australia, and you'll notice the repeated themes and points of view that they share.
Given her experience, you'd be wise to take Jeanette Gower's advice at face value. What she says is backed up by other breeders with excellent results and reputations.
One of the most unusual things about The Thinking Horse Breeder is the data Gower shares about her own successful stud farm. How many horses a year does she breed? How many have died, and why? This brings home some of the heartrending situations breeders must deal with.
What contributions can you expect the mare and the stallion to make to each foal? Which is more important, the mare or the stallion, and why? How do bloodlines influence breeding, and for how long? How can you look at a potential mare or stallion and identify physical characteristics that are good or likely to lead to performance problems in their foals?
To geld or not to geld, to keep a stallion or buy services, and the merits of live breeding and artificial insemination are other topics The Thinking Horse Breeder delves into. Gower makes it clear that keeping a stallion is not for everyone. She also offers suggestions for managing a stallion if you choose to do so.
She also discusses the math involved in breeding and raising horses.
If you have a certain number of breeding mares, how many foals, yearlings, and twoyear-old horses will you have at your stud farm? Do you have the time and resources to feed, train, and care for them?
If you want or need to sell your horses, how can you go about doing it?
She offers advice for pricing, promoting, marketing, and selling your stock. What if you advertise a horse and it doesn't sell? What if you sell a horse and the new owner is unhappy after the sale? This is practical info every breeder needs.
The photos Gower includes in this book are beautiful and inspiring. Some of them show examples of desirable or problematic aspects of horse physiology, or conformation. Many of the horses are incredibly beautiful.
This is a comprehensive book. If you follow Gower's advice, The Thinking Horse Breeder will inspire, educate, and assist you throughout your breeding career. When in doubt, check it and find the wisdom you need to answer your questions and challenges. This is a book every horse breeder, and potential breeder, should own.

The Horse Report Gestation period for mares and foaling due date
Provided by MAGIC BREED
The gestation period for mares is approximately 320-370 days from the first time being bred.
To generalize, the estimation of the due date, use a 340 day gestation period.
So if you’re wanting your foal to be born in early August, you need to breed your mare in the last week of August or the first few weeks in September.
The chart pictured will help you with the dates you plan to breed and and predicting the resulting foaling date.
Once you know your mare is in foal and the rough date she is due, as the time nears one of the most stressful things about foaling is the nightly vigils to check your expectant mare.
Anyone who has been in contact with foaling mares would know the story of “My mare waxed up today, she should foal very soon”.
Two weeks later you’re walking around like a zombie with blood-shot eyes saying, “she'll foal any day now”.
When it comes to foaling, on-time human intervention, if needed, is crucial to ensure a successful outcome.
For more than 40 years, Magic Breed has earned the trust of breeders, stud farms and broodmare owners as a crucial frontline tool to accurately alert foalwatchers when a mare is readying to foal down.
Already the benchmark foal-alert product in Australia and New Zealand, the original Magic Breed monitoring system has been dramatically upgraded to take advantage of modern technology.
The new Magic Breed product
builds on its worldwide reputation and brings the Magic Breed design into the 21st Century with improved range, battery life and many other new features.
Called Magic Breed Plus (pic-
tured below), it's not only much more affordable than the original, it also comes with a quantum leap in advanced features and benefits and offers the advantage of dealing directly with the man-
ufacturer who has manufactured the product since day one for the past 40 years.
Magic Breed Plus's operating system works on a 917MHz frequency, providing it with greatly improved immunity to interference and superior range - 500m is no problem and in excess of 1km is possible.
Designed from the ground up to minimise loss of sleep and long hours of supervision around foaling time, the non-invasive transmitter attaches to the halter and detects when a mare lies down in a foaling position.

The Horse Report Breeding and horse health monitoring system
By CORNELIA BARRY Magic Breed
When it comes to foaling, ontime human intervention - if needed - is crucial to ensure a successful outcome.
This also applies to horses after surgery or for detecting colic.
Magic Breed has earned the trust of breeders, stud farms and broodmare owners as a crucial frontline tool to accurately alert foal-watchers when a mare is readying to foal down and monitoring for colic or after surgery.
The Magic Breed Plus system is a popular tool amongst veterinary surgeons for this very reason, as they will be alerted when the horse lays downs, which would indicate that assistance is required.
We have heard many stories from owners and veterinary surgeons of situations where horses have been checked and deemed stable in the evening then to have a situation occur during the night where immediate assistance and intervention was required, had the alarm not been raised by the Magic Breed Plus System the outcome could have been devastating.
The Magic Breed/Magic Breed Plus product was designed here in Australia over 40 years ago, has always been manufactured in Australia and continues to be manufactured here in Australia. We are based on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland.
Magic Breed Plus's operating system works on a 917MHz frequency, providing it with greatly improved immunity to interference and superior range - 500m is no problem and in excess of 1km is possible.
While this means that it won't work with any of the 27MHz
accessories of the original Magic Breed system, we guarantee that the performance is so good that an additional antenna won't be necessary.
Designed from the ground up to minimise loss of sleep and long hours of supervision around foaling time, the non-invasive transmitter attaches to the halter and detects when a mare lies down.
The addition of an LCD display on the Magic Breed Plus receiver
provides a wealth of operator feedback.
This includes signal strength and battery level, along with individual identification for up to 8 transmitters.

Feature
Magic Breed has earned the trust of breeders as a crucial tool to accurately alert foal-watchers when a mare is readying to foal down.
The Magic Breed transmitter attaches to the mare’s halter.
There are various techniques used in equine reproduction which include semen collections and storage from stallions and artificial insemination of mares.
Artificial Insemination
Artificial Insemination (A.I.) is the placement of semen into the uterus of a mare at the time of ovulation. A.I. is used in horses for a number of reasons including the availability of the stallion, as an aid in managing mares with reproductive difficulties, and also to decrease the workload of the stallion. Successful A.I. involves regular ultrasound examination and monitoring of the mare’s cycle and necessitates close communication between the mare owner, the veterinarian and the semen provider.
Three methods of A.I. are used in horses:
Fresh Semen
Fresh semen is collected and used almost immediately on the farm at which it is collected.
Chilled Semen
Chilled semen involves collection, dilution with extender, cooling and transport of semen to the mare for use within 36 hours.
Frozen Semen
Frozen semen is collected and extended then frozen and stored in straws in liquid nitrogen. This technique allows access to semen from horses which are located overseas, currently competing, injured or even dead. Using frozen semen is convenient because the semen is available to be used when needed, but requires more intensive management
and timing of insemination close to ovulation of the mare’s follicle.
Frozen semen has several distinct advantages over fresh and cooled semen.
The genetics of a valuable stallion can be preserved indefinitely by collecting and storing doses of frozen semen during the nonbreeding season.
Frozen semen can be sent by courier to local or interstate farms or exported overseas
The primary disadvantages of frozen semen are stallion variability in response to freezing, cost to collect, freeze and store semen, intensified mare management, and slightly lower pregnancy rates per cycle. Sperm from some stallions does not tolerate freezing and thawing. Consequently, post –thaw motility and pregnancy rates can vary greatly between stallions.
Proper storage and handling of frozen
semen is critical for future success.
The Horse Report Stud & Breeding Feature About equine artificial insemination
The mare is inseminated immediately after ovulation is detected.
Prediction of ovulation and timing of insemination with frozen semen is facilitated by administration of ovulation-inducing agents, such as hCG or deslorelin.
Typically, a mare in oestrus would be given one of these agents once a follicle larger than 35mm in diameter is detected. In most instances, ovulation will occur in 36 to 40 hours after hCG or deslorelin administration.
Management of mares for breeding with frozen semen may seem intimidating. However, by following a few simple guidelines, frozen semen can be used very successfully in a breeding program. For more information on breeding and breeding requirement talk to you local vet.

The Horse Report Ensure your fencing & paddocks ar safe for foaling
There are many things to consider when preparing for your first foal to be born, one of which is a safe, suitable foaling area.
Fencing, ground cover, paddock hazards and shelter are all very important.
Foal fencing should reach right to the ground, be strong with no gaps or anything protruding that a foal can be injured on. Repair or replace any areas that a head or hoof can fit through, pay special attention to gateways in particular the space between the gate and the post. Beware of electric fencing, newborns do not have the agility to avoid electric fencing and can become entangled.
Introducing a foal to electric fencing should be done under close supervision.
Solid fencing lined with strong mesh or shadecloth is ideal. Water troughs and dams are another hazard, wobbly foals often drown in dams, bath tubs and water troughs.
Safely and securely cover permanent troughs and tubs, fence off dams and provide water in multiple smaller narrow containers that a foal cannot fit into and can still drink from.
Remove any fallen trees, farm
equipment or debris to prevent leg injuries.
Protection from rain, wind and sun is very important, healthy foals are tough and can handle poor weather very well but they still need protection from the elements, especially extreme heat.
Good tree coverage, a shelter shed or lockable walk-in/walkout stable are ideal.
One of the biggest risks to foals at birth is bacterial infections. If your mare is foaling outside make sure you have a well-rest-
AAURORA FENCING
ed, grassy paddock or yard. If you’re in drought or flood, have bales of clean rodent-free straw ready to spread out as ground cover during foaling as this will reduce the amount of bacteria your foal is exposed to. If you’re foaling down in a stable, make sure it is large enough for your mare to easily move around.
Thoroughly clean it and keep bedding fresh and clean. The same applies for paddock shelters.
Lastly keep dogs and other ani-
mals, especially pigs and poultry, well away and even other horses if unsure on how they will react to a newborn foal. Some horses can become very aggressive and kill or steal foals especially when restricted to smaller paddocks.
They can also fight through fences and the foals can become injured in the process. Have the paddock prepared in plenty of time before the mare’s due date as not all mares go full term. Happy foaling.

Feeding ponies can prove to be challenging
By LARISSA BILSTON, BAgrSc (Hons 1), Animal Nutritionist, Farmalogic
Nutritional guidelines for feeding horses are based on bodyweight, so in theory feeding ponies correctly is just a scaled down version of a larger horse diet.
However, in practice, getting pony diets right can be challenging due to the high nutritional content of pasture, pony appetites and an increased risk of metabolic conditions in easykeeper ponies.
It is important to carefully manage your pony's body condition to keep it within a healthy range. Many pony breeds have a genetic predisposition to metabolic diseases which increase the risk of laminitis.
Obesity increases the likelihood of developing Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS) which is a metabolic condition that affects the body's ability to use and store blood sugar, often leading to insulin resistance (IR) and laminitis. The most common cause of laminitis in pastured ponies is a spike in blood insulin levels triggered by eating grass, hay or hard feeds high in sugar and starch. The risk is highest during spring and autumn when pastures become too high in plant carbohydrates (sugars or starches) for most ponies to safely graze. How to provide adequate & appropriate roughage
Despite the challenges of high sugar grass, the first step in planning a good pony diet is to ensure enough appropriate roughage. Ponies need to be able to eat at least 1.5 per cent of their bodyweight in dry matter per day for a healthy gut. For a 250 kg pony, that adds up to 4 to 5 kg of hay or up to 25 kg of fresh grass!
Insulin resistant (IR) ponies must avoid high starch/sugar feeds and forage, so feed and pasture management is paramount for their welfare. This means they can't eat feeds containing cereal grains or by-products and need to be kept off-pasture for much of the year to manage their forage intake. See guidelines (above) for choosing the low sugar hay appropriate for IRponies.
Ponies consuming large volumes of highly palatable pastures can gain weight rapidly. If your pony becomes overweight but is not insulin resistant or dangerously obese, you may be able to manage weight loss without removing access to pasture by:
* Removing excess calories from the diet by cutting hard feeds back to just a token amount to carry the necessary mineral supplements.
* Limiting the quantity of grass consumed with a grazing muzzle or by dividing the paddock into strips or small sections with moveable electric tape. Do not regraze sections until growth is at least 15 cm high.
If using a grazing muzzle, keep it on at least 90% of the time the horse is at pasture, to prevent compensatory gorging while muzzle is removed. (Ahorse or pony can eat a full day's worth of food in just 4 hours!).
If your pony does not lose weight with these measures, remove access to pasture so you have total control of the entire intake. Provide low sugar hay (see side box) weighing 1.5 per cent of their bodyweight and a concentrated mineral balancer to complement the hay. Slow feeder hay nets can help make the daily ration last longer and to limit the risk of ponies developing gastric ulcers if left without feed for 4 hours or more.
When feeding older ponies, ask your vet or equine dentist to check that their teeth allow good utilization of grass or hay. Horses with worn or missing teeth may need to be fed chaff (and lots of it!) to ensure their roughage needs are met.
Adequate roughage usually provides enough protein to meet the daily needs of mature ponies. Breeding, growing and old ponies need
CHOOSING LOW SUGAR HAY
Forage for ponies with equine metabolic syndrome (EMS) or insulin resistance requires constant, detailed attention to sugar and starch levels.
* Ideally, choose hay which has been analysed and has a combined ESC + Starch value of less than 10%.
* Avoid high production grasses such as ryegrass and do not feed cereal (oaten, wheaten) hay or chaff.
* If carbohydrate levels of hay are unknown, soak in warm water for 30 minutes or cold for 60 minutes to remove soluble sugars.
* Drain and discard water before feeding. Soaking hay can reduce water soluble carbohydrates by 30%.
* Discard soaked hay after 12 hours if uneaten.
It is the spike in blood glucose and consequently insulin levels that triggers laminitis, so horses with EMS can suffer laminitis without being overweight.
a supplemental protein source such as lucerne hay or chaff if there is no clover in the pasture or by adding full fat soy or legume products in the hard feed. Limit lucerne intake to no more than 30 per cent of intake for hay-reliant ponies.
Only add calories if necessary
Most ponies get more than enough calories from forage and only need salt and a quality mineral balancer pellet or powder in a token feed to receive a healthy diet.
Some hard working or older ponies may need a hard feed to maintain weight. If your pony loses weight, make sure you're feeding enough forage before feeding more hard feed. The safest way to increase the level of energy (calories) in your pony's diet is with a low GI 'super fibre' based feed such as beet pulp, copra, legume hulls, (e.g. chickpea, lupin or soy hulls), legume grains (e.g. lupins) or oils.
These are the only safe options for ponies with equine metabolic syndrome (EMS) or insulin resistance (IR) who do not maintain weight from forage alone.
If your pony isn't laminitis-prone, you can feed cereal grains such as oats or barley but these can be too 'heating' for ponies carrying young or nervous riders.

The Horse Report Factors to consider when choosing a hard feed:
From page 10
Factors to consider when choosing a hard feed:
* Super fibres are generally the safest form of calories for ponies but may require a few minutes soaking.
* Uncooked lupins are also best soaked to soften the seed coat - soak whole lupins for 6 hours or overnight. Cracked lupins soften if soaked in boiling water for 10 minutes.
* Whole oats can be fed raw, but other cereal grains such as barley, oats, sorghum should be fed in a cooked form. You can boil them or buy steam-flaked, pelletised, extruded or micronised.
* When using oils for weight gain, take care to keep the diet anti-inflammatory by providing enough omega-3 fatty acids to balance the added pro-inflammatory omega-6 oils.
* Avoid feeds with added molasses - check the labelling on the bag.
TIP: Dampen hard feeds to aid swallowing and reduce the risk of choke.
The amount you'll need to feed depends on your pony's weight, individual metabolism, level of activity and the amount of energy provided by pasture or hay.
If your pony requires a lot of hard feed, it is healthier to give two or more meals per day, with each meal weighing less than 1 kilogram (for a 300 kg pony).
Balance the vitamins, minerals and fatty acids
Feeding your pony a correctly balanced diet complete with all the vitamins, minerals and fatty acids needed will allow their body to function optimally. This can result in improved health, performance and immune function. It's necessary to add vitamins, minerals and small amounts of fatty acids to complement the
roughage and hard feed (if any). Even the best pasture and hay in the world will leave your pony mineral deficient. Zinc, copper, iodine, selenium and vitamin and E are almost always deficient in an unfortified diet. Because some minerals compete for absorption at the same site in the gut, it is possible for a pony to be deficient in one mineral even if the recommended daily intake is given unless all minerals are provided in correct mineral ratios. Provide a mineral supplement to top up and balance the levels in your horse's pasture. An overweight pony needs roughage, salt and minerals, but don't feel that you have to give a 'laminitis-safe' hard feed which, although low in sugar, is nevertheless adding calories that an overweight animal does not need.
Ponies need between 7 to 12gms of plain salt
(sodium chloride - also known as stock, flossy, table and pool salt) per 100kg of bodyweight every day, even when spelling. There's no need to pay extra for pink salt - the trace minerals they contain are insignificant compared to your horse's requirements. Remember to count any salt included in hard feeds and supplements when calculating how much salt to add. It's safe to add the lower recommended amount of salt and offer free choice salt (clean loose salt in a bucket kept under cover) so your horse can top up when required. During hot weather, transport, and after work, feed a low sugar electrolyte supplement especially formulated to replenish electrolytes lost in sweat. Ahandful of damp lucerne chaff, beet pulp or copra make an excellent carrier for salt and a mineral balancer.
Omega-3 fatty acid supplementation is necessary when ponies are reliant on hay for roughage or consume omega-6 rich oils such as rice bran, canola or sunflower oils. Omega-3 rich supplements such as algal meal, protected fish oils, linseeds/flaxseeds and stabilized linseed oil can be used to improve the omega 3 to 6 ratio across the whole diet.
Ponies may also benefit from the addition of other supplements for assisting with particular conditions. Examples include oral joint supplements, aids to metabolism, mycotoxin binders and antioxidants.
It is well worth having a qualified nutritionist check your pony's ration to ensure that it provides all necessary nutrients and is well-balanced. Spending a little time and money on a good diet analysis often saves money being wasted on inappropriate, expensive, inefficient or unnecessary feeds.

PREBIOTICS
Prebiotics are the foods that feed these good microbes and bacteria. They are food ingredients that stimulate production or activity of the bacteria that live in the horse’s gastrointestinal tract.
Your horse does not digest these food ingredients; they are actually ‘fed’ to the good bugs, and are most commonly carbohydrates—
most common prebiotics used in equine supplements include fructooligosaccharides, xylooligosaccharides, polydextrose, and psyllium.
These prebiotics are digested by the ‘good’ microorganisms in the horse’s digestive system to increase their numbers or activity. Two Lactobacillus acidophilus.

The Horse Report The benefits of Aromatherapy for horses
Provided by ANGEL’S ANIMALS
Aromatherapy is a holistic natural healing treatment that has been used for centuries to treat humans and is now gaining popularity as a therapy for animals, especially horses. Aromatherapy involves the use of essential oils which are pure, natural, herbal remedies and is an alternative therapy to western medicine and medications.
The oils are extracted from plants and have therapeutic properties to help heal and restore the body back to homeostasis. The natural plant extracts promote physical and emotional well-being, healing and combats ailments.
Ahorse can instinctively recognize the medicinal properties of the essential oils that they are being offered and they can select the ones that meet their needs (both emotionally and physically). This process is called self selection.
Horses have a natural ability to self-medicate. In the wild, they can seek out the appropriate plants, soils, herbs, barks, resins and clays to prevent or reduce the harmful effects of pathogens, toxins and keep their bodies in balance.
In a domesticated atmosphere they do not have this luxury so offering them essential oils is a way to help them when needed.
Horses can greatly benefit from the use of essential oils.
Here are some of the benefits:
Improving Digestion - Horses are prone to digestive issues, especially horses that are
stalled or do not have the ability to graze and roam as they would in the wild. Essential oils can play a helpful role in the event of colic and digestive problems.
Reducing Toxin Load - We expose our horses every day to toxins that they would not normally come across in the wild. We expose them to fly spray, shampoos and conditions, body shine, medications, feed supplements, grain, cleaners, first aid ointments and more. We can go more natural baby using essential oils to replace many of these toxins.
Pain Management - If you own a horse, you know they are prone to injuries. It is probably you will have a horse with an injury or inflammation at some point. Especially if you compete with your horse, they will be prone to muscle pain. Essential oils like pep-
permint, eucalyptus and ginger have analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce pain, inflammation and swelling.
Respiratory Health - Horses are susceptible to respiratory problems like asthma and allergies. Aromatherapy can help improve their respiratory health by clearing their airways and reducing inflammation. Essential oils like eucalyptus, peppermint and tea tree have expectorant properties that can help horses breathe easier.
Boosting Immunity - Aromatherapy can also help boost their immune system. Essential oils like oregano, lemon and thyme have anti-microbial properties that can help fight off infections and disease.
Enhances Mood - Horses can be in a bad mood at times just like humans. Using essential oils like citrus, peppermint and rosemary can improve the mood of horses because of their uplifting properties.
First Aid - Essential oils can help you eliminate store bought ointments by creating DIY recipes to fight bacterial, viral and fungal infections. Helichrysum, oregano, tea tree, lavender, geranium, marjoram and myrrh all have first aid, infection fighting properties. In conclusion, aromatherapy is a safe and effective alternative therapy for horses that can provide numerous benefits.

Trainer T shirt improves rider alignment
By KATE DOLAN
The greatest gift for a rider is a good position and set of aids, using body awareness, centering and imagery. These classical principles of riding make it more enjoyable for the horse and rider partnership.
It's so easy to forget that the only way we can truly improve the horse is through the correct riding position and aids.
The Horse Report Trainers feature
For example, in order to achieve straightness in the horse, you first have to straighten yourself, starting by becoming aware of your own ‘crookedness’before you can even tell in what way the horse is crooked.
The Trainer T was developed for my students to smooth this pathway and feel the right response in the horse.
This simple visual tool helps riders to understand and correct upper body alignment and has been most effective for all riders from beginners to advanced riders.
I understand the upper body position is only part of the package, but it is an essential ingredient for success.
The results and feedback are exciting and worth sharing.
Feedback from riders using th Trainer T includes:
* I love this T because mum and dad can easily see and help me correct my position
* I started riding taller as soon as I put it on!
The Trainer T is the perfect tool to improve posture, balance and seat.
* I'm consistently getting the correct canter lead.
* It's so much easier to control my horses shoulders now my position has improved.
* I am able to keep the correct bend on both reins.
* I've already improved from a 6 - 8 in my collective mark for position.
Many of my students have won major events throughout Australia and the Trainer T has been instrumental in enabling their successful partnership.

When you ride, do you find yourself (and perhaps yourinstructortoo!) spending most of the time focusing on what the horse is doing, instead of being aware of and correcting yourown body?
THE TRAINER TIS THE PERFECTT TO IMPROVE POSTURE, BALANCE, AND SEAT. PERFECTFOR BEGINNERS THROUGH TO ADVANCED.
* Gives instant feedback to optimise good posture and balance.

Fibre provides root structure, similar to grass roots in turf, to existing or new sand-based riding surfaces. Fibre improves the surface stability, therefore the horse will work ‘on top’ of the surface rather than ‘through’ it.
Our Flexi Fibre is a mixture of polypropylene, polyester and nylon Fibres which are the base material to all of our surfaces worldwide and similar to all other top surface suppliers. We

College offers pathway to equine industry
Supplied by AUSTRALIAN INDUSTRY TRADE COLLEGE
The Australian Industry Trade College (AITC) came into being to meet the needs of young people.
So they got started on rethinking how to educate, equip and empower.
The AITC started helping young people to find their purpose and proudly pursue a pathway in industry, at school. Some might call it a trade but for the AITC, it is a profession. It’s about finding what fits; about loving what you do. Before opening its doors in 2006, thought was focused on who the AITC needed to be and the role it could play in the education and employment landscape.
The Horse Report Trainers feature
The College spoke to educators and to industry, and saw the options available to technically talented, bright minded young people diminish as thinking narrowed around what constitutes ‘clever’and the ‘best’path to success. That was more than 15 years ago and it’s come a long way since then.
Like our young people, the College has evolved, navigated challenges, experienced setbacks and enjoyed great successes.
The College provides a unique two to threeyear program for young people in Years 10 to 12 that focuses on:
developing character and values
academic and enterprise skills
employability skills
industry readiness
It is the only school in Queensland where students spend half the term in the classroom and half the term in work experience, work placement, training or a school-based apprenticeship
or traineeship.
The program is designed to progressively develop employability skills and achieve individualised learning goals, whilst also meeting the requirements of the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) and the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA).
They offer a huge variety of traineeships, apprenticeships and pathways to almost any career.
One of these is the Equine Academy. The racing industry provides a breadth of career opportunities for young people and can take you close to home or as far away abroad as you wish.
The AITC has developed a bespoke Equine Academy designed to educate young people to become apprentices and trainees of the highest calibre, specifically for the equine industry.
In fact, several Equine Academy students have already started their school-based apprenticeship.
You don't have to choose between finishing school and starting your career.
The College is currently enrolling Year 10 and 11 students who are interested in gaining a head start in the racing industry, while completing senior school.
Whether your interests lie with horses, working outdoors, pursuing a trade or administration; with an industry-driven education, the right training and unmatched immersion, the Equine program is sure to deliver a head start.
Benefits of this program
Finish Year 12 and gain your Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE).
Complete a Certificate II in Racing Industry.
Rotate through various industry roles.
Commence your school-based apprenticeship or traineeship in the equine industry before you graduate.
Grow your character and mindset to be a valuable contributor to the industry and your community.
Equine Academy participants will immerse themselves in the many facets of the equine racing industry through site visits, incursions, excursions and work experience.
The industry-driven program will connect young people with employers and race clubs for managed work experience, placements and ultimately a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship in your chosen field, all whilst completing high school.

Horses and cooking
By TANJA KRAUS
Learning how to work with horses is like learning how to cook. In the early days you are going to need a recipe for everything, and you're still going to muck it up.
As you get more relaxed in your own skills, you need recipes for the more complicated interactions, but you start to trust yourself on the basics.
The more you work with them the less you need the recipies but they are always there to refer to.
Some days you may try a really complicated dish and lose your confidence, you go back to basics to show yourself that you do know how to do this.
Eventually you start making up your own recipes, you find that you and your horse enjoy certain things, and so you refine them, and become really fantastic at those things.
Eventually you learn what a dish needs, just by tasting it. Just like eventually you know what a horse needs, just by being with it. But it all starts with learning how to boil water. Don't try to skip the steps. The fun is in the cooking
Stories from sponsored riders and other TECHNYFLEX users
Horses at The Oaks southwest of Sydney is having a busy and successful time training and competing. He has just done well at the recent Festival of Sydney and is presently preparing a group of young home-bred horses for the prestigious Waratah Showjumping event at SIEC at the end of August. Eventer John Twomey continues to win and place around South Africa which has been his home for the last few years.
He is competing his own horse, 'Just Jasper', as well as riding for other people. Reporting from an event in Gauteng, a small province in S.A., he rode 'Kilmokea'. "She put her best foot forward to finish second on her dressage score less than a penalty behind her stablemate 'Just Jasper'. Thanks to all the officials and volunteers who pulled off a super show, and thank you to TECHNYFLEX."
Paralympian Victoria Davies recently posted that the Australian High Performance squads have been updated. "I'm proud to say I still hold my position on the green squad (podium ready and podium potential). I've been on the squad for nine consecutive years, and I'm proud to have done it every step of the way with my PRE-Spanish stallion, 'Andaluka Elegido' and Lusitano stallion 'Celere'."
He had significant pain in both front feet and some discomfort after the flexing of both front fetlock joints. His shoeing was altered to encourage more heel growth and he was put on TECHNYFLEX Equine.
"It was noticeable in less than a month that the pain in his joints had disappeared, although his feet were still uncomfortable. Six weeks later, when his feet had improved further, he won two races at the NZ Cup Carnival. 'Oso Savvy' is still on TECHNYFLEX powder and Gel and, thanks to these two products, seems to be over all his problems. He's now being aimed at the NZ Cup in November."

In recent weeks TECHNYFLEX has been sponsoring classes at horse events around Australiathe Arndell Equestrian Carnival at Hawkesbury NSW; Dressage NSW at Clarendon NSW and the international event Qi3DE 2023 hosted by the Tamborine Equestrian Group run by Charlotte Price. Three-day-eventer Charlotte is also a long-time distributor of TECH-
TECHNYFLEX was also a sponsor ay the recent Tri Valley Equitation Horse of the Year Show at Rosewood, Queensland - its mission: to encourage, inspire and challenge equestrians from all disciplines to become involved. Horseman Tony Hodges is president of Tri Valley. He has been Australian jousting champion on several occasions and these days concentrates more on dressage and working equitation, riding, training and taking on outside horses. "I've been using TECHNYFLEX and other Natural Health NZ products for humans and animals since 2014," he says. "In the past I tried a number of other 'similar' products but never had the same positive results from any of them."

The Horse Report What makes Rose-Hip Vital Equine stand out in a cluttered market?
There are in fact many reasons. It all starts with the humble Rosehip, the berry-like fruit of the wild rose bush species Rosa Canina. A wholefood known to be one of nature’s richest sources of natural vitamin C. A superfood containing 8 naturally occurring vitamins (including C, E, B1 and B6) and 23 minerals (including iron, copper, zinc and magnesium), essential fatty acids (omegas 3, 6 and 9),
You may already know rosehips are often fed to horses for immune system support and a improved circulation and improved digestive function. So you’re probably wondering what makes Rose-Hip Vital® so special?
Rose-Hip Vital® is made from Rosehips manufactured with patented extraction and drying processes which isolate and activate a galactolipid (fatty acid) called GOPO®. GOPO® has clinically proven anti-
The patented processes also concentrate and preserve the naturally occurring vitamins and minerals, transforming Rose-Hip Vital® into a product that is both in a category all on its own, and across many; It’s a joint antioxidant and a nutritional supplement. It delivers noticeable improvements to mobility, mood, condition, willingness to move forward, performance and recovery while reducing improving general health and wellbeing, and boosting immunity.
Rose-Hip Vital® is a clinically proven plantand rich source of natural vitamin C. There is no product like it. Unlike other joint supplements, Rose-Hip Vital® is 100% plant-
Rose-Hip Vital® is safe for long term use and it does not swab. It can be used alongside conventional treatments and supplements as well as potentially replacing or reducing the medication.
Horses like it so much, even the fussiest of eaters become more enthusiastic about their feed once Rose-Hip Vital is added. So while Rose-Hip Vital Equine has become a highly use, it also has become highly recommended for improving general health and wellbeing, improving performance and maintaining healthy joints.
How does Rose-Hip Vital® Equine lengthen the lifetime of a working horse?
Vital is comprehensive. There are in excess of placebo controlled clinical trials on people, dogs and horses mainly focusing on antithe unique compound GOPO.
To many people, antioxidants and anti-aging go hand-in-hand. Antioxidants are talked about as the antidote to cell-damaging free radicals. Exercise and the associated stress and increase in oxygen consumption are linked to an increased production of free radicals. When the production of free radicals overwhelms the body’s antioxidant defences, oxidative stress can occur with subsequent research shows horses need natural vitamin C to help block toxic free radical activity, which causes damage throughout the body including joints and cartilage.
Some white blood cells in the body contain granulocytes which enable them to ‘clean’
bacteria in it. Too many of these white blood cells wear down tissue cartilage. In large numbers they can also produce chemical enzymes and toxic freeradicals which cause even more tissue damage. Excess accumulation of white blood cells combined with the release of chemical substances cause’s joint pain
The more becomes, the more the white blood cells are attracted to it –a painful cycle.
protects cartilage. This means it helps to delay the onset of arthritic changes or slow down further cartilage degeneration if it already exists.
In short, if you want to extend the lifetime of your working horse, feed it a natural antirich source of natural vitamin C. Rose-Hip Vital® Equine is your only option, and the results speak for themselves.

THE ULTIMATE MOTHERS DREAM!
Freddie is everyone’s favourite when you meet him, he is the ultimate kids pony, and he is always handled by my 2 and 4 year old.
Freddie is the one in the stable that is used for the kids pony rides, or road rides, for the kids to get out and brush and wash. He can be on his own or with others.
He is a top quality Shetland, qualified for grand nationals 2023 and Southern Cross 2023. He has so many winnings, from when first started out as a newcomer, and now this year competing at two Grand National qualification shows and qualifying at both shows.
Freddie is the ultimate Lead rein Shetland, he is also an amazing ridden Shetland. He sits in a frame and does his job for the kids. He goes from the float to the ring no work down. He is now ready to take a little kid to the top. Freddie is a Grand National winning Shetland. He has the best work ethic, but also so well educated. He has no vices, no health issues, good to tie, float and clip.
This is a very hard sale.
Please contact me for further info. Lots and lots of videos with the kids

Ronnie is 10.1 1/2 8 year old Shetland who is very much a loved member of our family. We have done everything ourselves with Ronnie right from the very beginning. Ronnie is very happy and is not your typical lazy Shetland. He loves to jump, go down the beach, trail rides, steeplechases (his favourite thing to do) and will give anything a go.

Chewy has been shown successfully in-hand and under saddle including Currently in light work, ridden by 2 children aged 7 - 15 and going well under saddle. Chewy has a fantastic work ethic taking everything in his stride including new places, showing, jumping, trails, pony club, games. Good breaks however still a semi forward moving pony so suits a capable beginner or novice child.
Chewie is totally handled by children and isn’t fussed by cars, bikes, dogs. Chewy is a definite stand out in the show ring and is expected to continue to do well at the highest level in Leading Rein and/or First Ridden classes. Perfect for a show home to continue his education and reach his maximum potential, suitable for pony club and just for a little rider to love and enjoy. Great for the farrier, float and able to clip with no sedation. Chewy is of the highest breeding and was started/ previously owned by Andrew Buckley, has correct conformation with three stunning paces.

Lorry is now looking for his new home as his rider is no longer riding and he is missing out on the work and attention he craves. Lorry has a very loving personality, always first to the gate for cuddles, loves anyone he meets and can be paddocked happily with or without other horses.
Easy to catch, float, worm, clip and shoe. Lorry is best suited to a dressage or show horse home where he shows most potential to excel.
Lorry has previously competed in the show ring as a show hunter, where he managed to place in many competitions with his previous owners. He features in the 2015 Mitavite SAHorse of The Year gallery, after taking out the win in the Graduate Garland Show/Show Hunter Hack class.
Although Lorry is pretty easy going in most situations, he does need a knowledgeable home with either a competent teen or adult to get the best out of him as he can get anxious at times.

Kiki is truly something special. She is going to be a big girl. Only turning one in Nov and is already about 15.2hh. She has the prettiest face and so well put together for how big she will be. She is going through her gangly yearling stage so isn't probably the best time to advertise but even now she is exquisite.
Beautiful across the ground and has so much presence. I truly believe this mare will reach the top. Only selling as I have a colt born this year which is our 1st home bred so would really like to keep him. He is also going to be huge.

Izzy is a true performance pony. She is a loving and kind pony with endless potential in any discipline when in the right hands. She has attended many showing competitions as well as pony club and show jumping events, always with success.
She has been recently jumping up to 70cm and shows huge potential. She is training elementary dressage and does flying changes etc. The little pocket rocket could do anything!
Izzy has recently been ridden by a 9 yr old and even though she is quiet, her education and temperament require a knowledgeable family or capable rider to bring out her best.
Izzy would ideally thrive with a small adult rider or confident family looking for a top performance pony! This is a very special pony to us so she will only be sold to the appropriate home.

Utopia is a 6yo 15.2 1/2hh Anglo mare by Coltura from a lovely TB daughter of Atlantis Prince (GB). Utopia is a lovely eye-catching type with striking good looks and a very elegant front. She is fine and athletic with good confirmation & great feet. She is very pretty and has a sort of WOWfactor about her. She is currently in full work and is coming along very nicely with 3 quality & elastic paces. She has had outings to riders club, trail rides and a local dressage competition. She has also spent time with professional trainers so has a very well-rounded foundation. Utopia has done some jumping and seems to enjoy the experience and shows great scope. She has good technique, and is brave and willing. She has jumped up to 80cm but shows talent far beyond this.
Successful shown in hand as a yearling she handled the travel, change of environment and show ring experience with ease. She has an excellent resting HE for endurance riders with her pedigree being used across Australia and internationally in the endurance field. “BYE BYE FLY BYE FLY”
QUEENSLAND ITCH, SWEET ITCH, SUMMER ECZEMA and EQUINE
ALLERGIC DERMATITIS are names for distressing skin conditions which affects horses in spring and summer months throughout Australia and around the world.
The usual cause is a hypersensitivity to the bites of flies (in particular sand flies or midges).
While the bite of the flies are an irritation, some horses develop sensitivity to the bite and will rub themselves so much that they cause injury to their skin.
Research shows the cause is an allergic reaction to the chemicals in the saliva of the midges (as with humans).
Not only that, but once or twice a day, stable lies come to the horse, feed vigorously for a minute or two, and then return to the shade to digest their food. These bites can cause intense irritation in some horses. The bites appear as small raised lumps with a central scab.
The effects on the horses can be dramatic. They suffer intense pruritus (itchiness) on the mane, tail, face, ears and back, resulting in biting, rubbing, hair loss, self-trauma and a change of temperament. They become miserable and irritable.
KURITCH has been specially formulated to help assist this problem effectively, in a number of ways:
Firstly, it repels the biting insects using the combination of the natural repellent “Citronella Oil” and a highly effective repellent “DEET”. Secondly, it soothes the irritated areas thus relieving the horse from biting and rubbing, which in turn allows the normal healing process to begin.
It achieves this by the inclusion of the natural antiseptic “Eucalyptus oil” and Camphor oil” which naturally relieves itchy skin.
These significant benefits are also enhanced by the “Rain Resistant” and “Low irritant” formula. As it doesn’t contain alcohol (prevalent in most fly sprays) it won’t “sting” the horse. It can also be applied to surface wounds, minor cuts and skin abrasions to help prevent irritation and possible infection by nuisance insects.
Registered by the APVMA in Australia for over 40 years, extensive field experience has proven KURITCH to be a most effective solution for both preventing and healing distressing skin conditions caused by biting insects.
As well as KURITCH as a repellent, environmental management will also assist in protecting your horse.
Midges breed near stagnant water. As they don’t fly more than a few hundred metres from their breeding area, housing or paddocking your horses more than 500 metres from those areas will reduce their exposure to the flies.
Also rugging, hooding or stabling your horses between the hours of 4pm – 7am during spring and summer will limit the contact of the flies.
Should your horse already be suffering from the effects of allergic skin dermatitis, ensure you use QUIT ITCH to treat and relieve the effects of insect bites.
Since the 1970’s, QUIT ITCH has been an essential weapon in the fight against skin disorders in horses.
