LETTER FROM THE EDITOR A Letter from the Editor

owza! If there has ever been a year that I wanted to move somewhere warmer (and really meant it) it is this year! This has been the kind of winter that reinforces “survival mode” and the basic need to survive the cold. There hasn’t been much time to do more than just that - survive. By the time we care for all of the horses - extra hay, bedding, refresh water (THANK GOD FOR HEATED BUCKETS!) and then head out to shovel snow *again, make sure the dogs and chickens are bedded and have a functioning heat lamp, carry in wood for the stoves...etc, etc. It doesn’t leave much time for any riding. Not that I really feel the need to take a ride in below zero temperatures - once again confiming my desire to leave the frozen tundra. I really had good intentions of showing this winter, but mother nature had other plans. I think every show I have planned to attend since Thanksgiving has had to be cancelled due to bad weather. I don’t mean to sound whiney...really, I know it has been tough for all of us that have had to endure the “polar vortex” attacks of 2014. Especially tough for those of us who have livestock to tend to. In all honesty, this type of winter just reaffrims to me - as it should to you - what kind of dedication and love for our four legged friends we all possess. (And that we are all just a little bit crazy.)

Until next month.........post pictures of your winter adventures on our facebook page - if you dare to venture out in the frigid air.....and if you do... remember to count your blessings on horseback! God Bless and Ride Safe, Christa Conway

Horseshoe H NT Our winner this month is Casey Creek! Casey found the hidden horseshoe and so did Emily Johnson. Casey chose a FREE Horsey T-shirt as her prize. Congratulations! Find this well hidden horseshoe for a chance at a FREE “Horsey-T,” “Horsey-Hat” or a year’s subscription. Call 765-744-7363 or email us at thehorseresource@msn.com when you find one and we’ll mention your name in our next issue and send you a prize if you are the first to contact us! “Happy horseshoe hunting!” (Find the horseshoe to the left somewhere in this issue and email or call us with it’s location! thehorseresource@msn.com)

A Little “Barrel Talk” Here is a preview of what you can find in this month’s Barrel Talk - just keep flipping those pages and you’ll find the full article on pages 10 and 11.

Horses Picky About Water Last Catt Posted 2014-01-17 4:19 PM Veteran Posts: 156 Location: Cali I’ve never had a horse that was as picky about water as the young mare I have now. She will drink water from our area, but haul more than an hour or two and you might be out of luck. At home and places nearby, if you offer her water she will drink the whole bucket, so last summer when I hauled her to a large barrel race a few hours away and she failed to drink the water there, she got our shower water from home. It was enough to keep her hydrated, but she did not like the water there. It was what appeared to be well

Page 4

water, and by the time day 3 rolled around after our run and she was thirsty, she went to drink it not knowing it was the bucket of their water and she literally yanked her head up and spit it out. I have heard Gatorade is something you can put in water to change the flavor, but I could never find out how much I should put in. What do you use to keep your horses drinking? (please include how much you give!) Thank you! FlyingJT are you on well water?

Last Catt Technically yes, but its a city well. We have really nice water here, but at the lake I take her to a lot, their water is very cloudy and not as clean as I’d like, and she loves it too. She was raised an hour away and they have a private well. Eta: the lake water is not directly from the lake, it’s from the lakes hook ups for RVs and trailers. Married2Rodeo Regular Posts: 99 Location: Texas We’ve used Gatorade before I put one large bottle ( like 30 oz or so) in water bucket fill the rest with water. Hubby’s old head horse only like orange

FlyingJT Might have something to do with the chlorine levels in the water when you haul her away from home. I have a few that are like that. Instead of trying to get them to drink the water with all the little tricks of Gatorade, Kool-Aid, jello mix, apple juice, etc. I just went a bought a tank (48 gallon) for my trailer and used that. Good luck in which ever direction you choose. It can be so frustrating!

It was what appeared to be well water, and by the time day 3 rolled around after our run and she was thirsty, she went to drink it not knowing it was the bucket of their water and she literally yanked her head up and spit it out. Hubby’s old head horse only like orange lol FlyingJT Might have something to do with the chlorine levels in the water when you haul her away from home.

Page 10

cyount2009 Elite Veteran Posts: 1100 I had a mare that was like that for a long time. She would not drink it if it had the slightest hint of treatment in it or if it had any odd smell. I hauled around gallons and gallons of water to every rodeo or race for years! My husband hated it. She eventually out grew it with hauling and started to drink other water too but it seemed like I hauled water FOREVER! Last Catt RE: FlyingJT She ate the hay that was sprayed with their water, and I tried mixing the water from home with their water and once it got to about 20% of their water she didn’t want it. I’ve been considering hauling her out of state to family’s house to work her on a ranch and learn to breakaway rope with them, and if I’m traveling a lot (since I’d like to use her as a college rodeo horse) I want to get her used to drinking water on the road. The way I kept her going this summer was spraying her hay to make it wet so that she’d at least get water through that. I had hauled up with friends who didn’t have a tank other than the small one for showers. We sold our trailer that had a huge tank(living quarters, the water was a huge tank stored under the bench inside) and just replaced it with a tiny stock trailer with no tank, so that’s the first thing on the list to buy. I’m hoping as she gets more familiar with the road that she’ll drink easier. Last Catt RE: cyount2009 I’m hoping this is something she will grow out of, she’ll be 6 in a few months, but she spent the first 3 years at her breeders before being sent off for training. I got her as a 4 year old, and what confuses me is one of the trainers she was with lives up north where we had headed, and they never said anything back then about her being a water snob during training... hammer_time Posts: 7380 Location: San Diego for now! Honestly, I would just let her figure it out. Sometimes my horse drinks, sometimes he doesn’t. Sometimes I don’t think he’s even thirsty. uno-dos-tres! Expert Posts: 3699 Location: Bandera, TX This is something that I take very seriously. I had a friend hauling with me several years ago that lost her horse to colic. They were on a serious run to make the NFR. You must

keep them hydrated or face the UGLY that comes with a dehydrated horse. I like Horse Quencher, I hate sugar going into my horses but this is a time to let that go by the wayside. If I can’t get a colt to sip water after giving some alfalfa pellets that have been soaked then I use the Horse Quencher. OhMax Veteran Posts: 105 Location: Des Moines I bought a water tank for my trailer when we made a 10 hour move. He didn’t end up drinking any on that trip - but I’ll be darned if it isn’t the best thing ever to not have to haul water buckets from lord knows where at barrels races! My boys a picky drinker too, so having the tank and being able to take some with us has been very nice and set my mind at ease. I would consider trying soaked hay cubes or a really sloppy bran mash to keep some moisture in her. I also heard an old transporter trick is a half can of cheap beer...give them the beer first and then offer water. Old timers say it’s never failed them, but I haven’t tried it personally. Last Catt RE: Uno-dos-tres Hence the reason I gave up my shower for 3 days, and my friend did as well. We don’t feed pellets or cubes, we have good quality alfalfa and our horses do well on it. But with our hay provider switching to 3 way, we’re considering going over to cubes. Where would the best place be to buy thirst quencher? RE: Ohmax: I had actually took some bags of feed and bran incase she didn’t want to eat as well as electrolyte paste, which I did give her the first day, I also made sure that the mash was wet and soupy, since my horses prefer it that way. But I also wet her hay pretty good in order to keep dust down in the hay as well as get moisture into her. I monitored her carefully and being she was in a pen, I made sure I kept track of her bathroom business lol she never showed any signs of stress or dehydration thankfully. I have only heard of beer being used to take the edge off a nervous horse (like a 12 pack of beer in a bucket), but never tried that either. I’ll have to see if she likes the taste of beer... that might be an option... coastal rider Regular Posts: 75 Location: Abbotsford B.C. Canada

Just an observation. To keep horses drinking, my clients who do endurance routinely or three day eventing add an electrolyte to the feed to make sure the horse is literally forced to drink water. If you use a regular performance horse feed try adding just 1 oz a day of a good electrolyte about 5 days before you hit the road and then use one oz at least daily at the show. THe horse will be forced to drink. You can make your own electrolyte with a 50/50 blend of regular plain white stock salt (sodium chloride) and the salt used by heart patients called lite salt which is a blend of potassium chloride and sodium chloride . This gets you the electrolytes involved with water balance and matches losses in sweat fairly well and will encourage drinking. Adding some beet pulp which absorbs and holds water in the gut may help as well. A bran mash is a bit of help, but the bran is not a soluble fiber that soaks up water and puffs up. It is a harder fiber and not as handy as any endurance rider will tell you for prevention of colic. You can also fill a tank at the show and let it stand for a day depending on timing and that may let the chlorine (if the main culprit ) actually dissipate into the air. That is why a swimming pool smells, chlorine will turn into a gas and come out of the water. So the horses are just trying to protect themselves from an unknown thing by refusing. You can add a cup of molasses or the gator aid but maybe a water filter like campers use may help. I have never tried it, we are more of the electrolyte types but think about it and maybe someone has some experience with that. Cheers, Coastal Rider Meyerfarm Get powder electrolites and put it in your water at home a few days before you go to show and then do the same at the show. This has worked well for me as we have a couple places we go that the water smells and our horses do fine this way BarrelRacing4Christ Posts: 3075 Location: Texas is my Home We have a 15 gallon tank of water in the nose of our gooseneck that we bring water from home in so we don’t have to worry about our horses not drinking.

komet. It might have something to do with the chlorine in the water where you haul to. My mom had fits with her dairy goats, raised on well water and hauled to shows. Imagine entering a milking contest with goats that won’t drink the water or trying to bag one up for the show under the same conditions!! jaydenw Regular Posts: 51 We have a rain barrel (I think 50 gallons but I could be wrong) that stays in the trailer with water from home, never have a problem with a horse not drinking. Another thing to try that my mom’s talked about using before is a package of koolaid or just use pennies in the bottom of the bucket. She said both have worked well in the past with picky drinkers :) BARRELHORSE USA Just make your water at home stink by using Gatorade, kool aid or whatever ... then use the same to cover up the smell of strange water on the road ..... iron in drinking water is the biggest stinker that horses refuse ... it is more the stink of the water horses refuse versus how it tastes ... BUT NEVER DIP WATER OUT OF OR

LET YOUR HORSE DRINK IN A COMMON WATER TROUGH WHICH ARE FULL OF DISEASES ... I have used this type of tanks for years and they are stackable and price will not break the bank .. and the design is very well done .... to sanitize ... just add a half cup of bleach to half a tank of water and shake around and then rinse very well and you are ready to go ... a lot of RV places carry similar that are for potable water use .....>>>> http://www.thereadystore.com/water-storage/water-storage-containers... flqhluvr Add 2 cups of molasses to a bucket of water.....they love it and it’s a natural electrolyte ! brlracerchick Posts: 5216 Location: Nebraska One of my mares won’t drink on the road no matter if I bring my own water. I’ve learned to carry electrolytes with me and give them to her. I use OTC Jug and just give her a couple lines on the plunger (can’t remember how much that is). Usually she’ll drink within a couple hours. I’ve never had a problem with her since I started using that.

vjls Posts: 2023 We carried our own water - 50gals all the time

But I learned the hard way. It makes it alot easier to have your own, but always wash out your barrel to keep it clean But if push come to shove, 1 hand full of salt shove in their mouth, go ride for a few minutes they will drink. Last Catt RE: BARRELHORSE USA I was raised to never let my horse drink out of another persons water bucket where I was unsure about their water or any animals that had been in the water, that I am very careful of. We’re working on getting a water container, it’s just if I for some reason stay somewhere and run out of water, I’m gonna need her to drink other water. RE: brlracerchick She drinks our water or water that tastes/ smells familiar on the road well, it’s just when water is unfamiliar. We joked that if we ran out of water we’d run into town and buy her bottled water....

RE: vjls I know salt makes you thirsty, but doesn’t it dehydrate a little as well? (My brain might be thinking wrong) I just don’t want to dehydrate a horse more than they already are... redracinmo Posts: 1454 Location: lost in missouri We keep hydration hay on our trailer at all times. it is a large cube of hay that u put in a bucket of water it soaks up the water and depending on how much water u put in the bucet it can be kinda soupy. we have found that once our horses eat/drink a bucket of this they happily from then on drnk the water. We travel alot and never know if we will have well water, fresh water or city water. Our horses are usually pretty good but something about Kansas water they do not like. We have bailed out many a friend when their horses wouldnt drink with a hydration hay block. THey are different from cubes as i have used both. these provide more liquid and dissolve so much faster. You can go online and google purina hydration hay for $10 off coupons. www.barrelhorseworld.com

Hialeah, FL / January 19, 2014 – Joe Allen and Dallas Blakley’s Ja Jess Elegance, a three-year-old daughter of Mr Jess Perry (Streakin La Jolla)Golly Zee (Gol), broke well, ran strongly, and finished best in winning Sunday’s featured $27,375 Biscayne Stakes at Hialeah Park.

JA JESS ELEGANCE STRONG IN BISCAYNE WIN, TRAINER KEARL AND JOCKEY VALLEJO SCORE AGAIN

ridden by Oscar Delgado, was best “around the hook” in winning Sunday’s marathon $42,000 Key West Stakes at 1,000 yards by 1-1/4 lengths over Texas Vision. Even after ducking out at the start and bumping with the runner-up shortly after the start, Eyeontheline settled well, gained the lead early, put three lengths on his rivals turning for home, then held sway to the finish line. He covered the race distance in a time of 54.276 seconds.

Ja Jess Elegance, trained by Judd Kearl, saddled by assistant Bradley Mason, and ridden by Rodrigo Vallejo, bested Pm Runaway Dash (Heza Fast Dash-Runaway Oak) by half a length, with First Prize Linda (First Prize Perry-Linda Te Chick) finishing another half-length back in third.

Eyeontheline, a son of Eye Yin You out of the Barrett’s Bullet mare Bobbie Lou, found the winner’s circle in his second outing at Hialeah Park. He garnered his 8th victory in his 21st lifetime start, earning the winner’s share of $25,200 for the day’s work. Those winnings increased his lifetime earnings to $91,676.

Assistant trainer Mason said, “It was all in the break!” She broke well and that made the difference. We knew she could run well at 250 yards after her second-place finish in the Mockingbird Stakes (December 1, 2013).” Ja Jess Elegance, bred in Texas by her owners, put up a respectable clocking of 13.091 seconds for 250 yards. She earned the winner’s share of $16,425 for her winning effort and upper her career earnings to $38,821. She registered her 3rd victory in her 7th lifetime start and has now won races at three different tracks. The filly was sent to the post as a 6-5 favorite and returned $4.40 for a $2 wager. The Biscayne victory gave the winning trainer/jockey tandem their second consecutive Sunday stakes score at Hialeah Park. They visited the winner’s circle a week ago on January 12 after Sure Shot B won the City of Hialeah. After the first three finishers –Ja Jess Elegance, Pm Runaway Dash, and First Prize Linda– the remaining order of finish in the 2014 Biscayne Stakes was: Spittin Jessie, Supertanker, Blue Gene Harley, Ja Gols Playboy, Ja Gols Firebrand, and Stellar Scenestealer.

EYEONTHELINE PROMINENT EARLY, STRONG LATE IN MARATHON KEY WEST WIN AT 1,000 YARDS Hialeah, FL / January 26, 2014 – The gray six-year-old gelding Eyeontheline, owned by Erasmo Hernandez, trained by Guadalupe Garza, Jr., and

News Delgado said, “These races are fun. I knew he would do well from the inside post position. We’ve been working real hard with him all season long and it finally paid off.” Delgado, the all-time leader in Quarter Horse jockey wins at Hialeah Park, did not ride in South Florida last season, trying his hand on the Thoroughbred side of the racing business in the mid-Atlantic area of the country. “It’s great to be back here,” Delgado said. “I wasn’t getting any younger, so I wanted to give the Thoroughbreds a shot. I’m glad I did, but I’m happy to be back at Hialeah Park and thrilled to be winning races again.” After the top two, 5-2 mutuel favorite Apollo Ono checked in third, beaten five lengths, after bobbling at the break. The gelding was chasing a second straight win “around the hook” after trouncing a field of allowance-level runners at the distance January 12. Doyles Dashing Star, winner of the opening-day Orange Blossom Stakes at 550 yards on November 29, raced wide from her outside post position in the eight-horse field, weakened in the stretch, but still held fourth place. The official order of finish in the 2014 Key West Stakes, the 4th and penultimate race in the new Hialeah Marathon Series, was: Eyeontheline, Texas Vision, Apollo Ono, Doyles Dashing Star, Trs Hotshot Adam, Sassy Suzze, I Beat The Feet, and The Star Alert. The Hialeah Marathon Series ends with another extra-long affair at 1,000 yards, the $50,000-added Sailfish Stakes on closing day February 23.

As veteran Fantasia-goers have come to expect, the show will highlight the brilliance, grace, and athleticism of horses and demonstrate the spirit, willingness, and intelligence that horse people cherish most in their equine companions. “The Fantasia is always a special opportunity to see some incredible horses and riders and witness some unforgettable performances,” said Eugenia Snyder, President of Equine Affaire. “In addition to enjoying the beauty and excitement of the various performances that make up the show, we have to marvel at the range of skills that horses possess, their extraordinary trainability, and their willingness to perform and excel in so many ways. The Fantasia is much more than equestrian entertainment—it’s truly a testament to the heart and soul of the amazing animals we love.” The program for the 2014 Fantasia will include several of the most popular elements and disciplines featured at previous shows including freestyle reining and dressage, Roman riding, liberty acts, and drill team routines. This year’s Fantasia will include performances that will cover the emotional gamut from the dramatic to the comedic, and Fantasia-goers can be prepared to be “moved,” amazed, and made to laugh.

Page 14

Among the headliners for the 2014 Fantasia are two of the top liberty horse trainers in the business: Guy McLean and Tommie Turvey. Guy McLean will present his “signature” four-horse liberty act which really must be seen to be believed—while Tommie Turvey will Roman ride a team of horses over a fire jump and engage his infamous paint horse, Poker Joe, in a battle of the wits. Other performers slated for the show include the award-winning Canadian Cowgirls drill team, Christine Drentwett and Caroline Williams (who will perform a garrocha pas de deux), Jeff Wilson presenting cowboy dressage aboard his exquisite Morgan stallion, Delview Catskill Valiant, and a host of other distinguished riders and handlers and unforgettable horses both large and small. The 2014 Fantasia will be a show that horse-loving Fantasia goers won’t soon forget. The 2014 Fantasia is made possible through the generous sponsorship of Buckeye Nutrition, a leading manufacturer of premium equine nutritional products. The doors to the Ohio Expo Center coliseum will open for the Fantasia at 7:00 each evening and the show will begin at 7:30pm. Tickets range in price from $12 to $25 plus shipping and handling. Advance tickets may be purchased through March 31st online with a credit card (Visa, MasterCard, Discover) at www.equineaffaire.com or by calling (740) 8450085. Because of the event’s popularity, most tickets for the performances will sell out in advance. Any tickets not sold in advance will go on sale at 9:00am on Thursday, April 10th at the Information Booth in the Bricker Building at Equine Affaire. Equine Affaire will take place April 10-13 at the Ohio Expo Center and offer an unparalleled program of clinics, seminars, and demonstrations; the Versatile Horse & Rider Competition; a Youth Pavilion; a Breed Pavilion and Horse & Farm Exhibits; the Marketplace consignment area; a new Hobby Farms Pavilion; and the largest horse-related trade show in the nation. Winter TLC For Horses With Arthritis Freezing temperatures and deep snow can be extremely problematic for horses with arthritic and mobility issues, according to Laurie Cerny, editor and publisher of www.good-horsekeeping.com “If a horse is mildly arthritic during the summer it could become unsound during the winter - especially with equine seniors,” Cerny said. “Combine cold temperatures, dampness, and deep snow or mud and a horse’s joints can quickly become sore and less flexible.” Standing around doesn’t help the situation. “It would be just like sitting on the couch for 8-10 hours and then trying to move,” Cerny said. Keeping horses mobile, supplemented, and as flexible as possible are key to keeping these horses sound until spring. Here are some other tips for keeping arthritic horses comfortable during the winter: 1. Feed a joint supplement with MSM, Glucosamine, and HA. Omegas are also good for keeping inflammation down. 2. Add a pain reliever like Bute or Aspirin on really bad days. While you want to be conservative when using these - the benefits out way the risks if you can keep the horse moving and active with a little pain reliever. 3. Maintain flexibility. Do stretching exercises on a regular basis. These can be as simple as manipulating a horse’s head to the right, to the left, and in between its front legs. Offering a treat at each point will get a horse to do these voluntarily. 4. Groom with a rubber massager brush on a regular basis. This will help to increase circulation to large muscle groups. 5. Try to maintain you regular exercise schedule. If you don’t have an indoor arena and footing is bad outdoors, try to at least hand walk horses for 10-15 minutes twice a day. Backing, turning on the forehand, and 90-360 degree turns can also be done on the ground and will help keep a horse supple. 6. Encourage natural movement in pens by putting hay in several piles . . . so horses have to move from one spot to another. 7. If snow is really deep in pens, shovel a few paths to make movement easier. 8. When turnout isn’t possible (like during a blizzard or ice storm) at least move horses from one stall to another. The movement helps; it also helps with boredom - when stabled for long periods of time. 9. Consider bedding with straw or old hay. Deep bedding encourages older horses to lie down. It’s warmer and softer to lay on straw then it is to lay on a thin layer of sawdust over a rubber mat. 10. Keep horses hydrated by offering warm water several times during the day. Adequate water consumption during the winter is crucial to keeping joints lubricated. For more horsekeeping tips go to www.good-horsekeeping.com or http://good-horsekeeping.blogspot.com/

Despite the weather in surrounding areas it was fairly nice in Murfreesboro, TN for the weekend of the IBRA Preferred Show and Futurity. While contestants in many surrounding states were snowed in, many still came on in for a great weekend of barrel racing. A familiar face to the IBRA leader board Chris Coffey, took home the majority of the futurity money winning both go rounds and the Avg. Coffey won the 1st Go and ran the fastest futurity time of the weekend aboard Famous Firewater Anny. He also ran second aboard Fannys Man of Fame in the 1st Go. In the 2nd Go Round it appeared as though there may be a repeat with Coffey and Famous Firewater Anny leading right up until he knocked himself down a notch reversing the roles of his two futurity horses. With the 2nd Go win Fannys Man of Fame took the Average win as well bumping Famous Firewater Anny down to 3rd in the 2nd Go Round and 2nd in the Avg. Coffey and his pair of standout futurity horses took in a collective $5,188. In addition to the thousands of dollars in payout, every single division winner earned themselves a IBRA Wild Card granting them an automatic short go qualification at the IBRA National Finals and also a Custom Best Ever Pad. As usual you can find a complete copy of results with photos in the pages to follow. Due to the fact that these results take up so much space we will highlight two of our 2013 National Finals Champions in next month’s issue. We thank all of you who attended our show in Murfreesboro and wish that those of you snowed in could have made it. Special thanks to Best Ever Pads for their support of our show and our members. Ex: If you have one team member win a division and the other 4 hit barrels or fall below the top 20 mark in any division then you would have 20 total points for your team. Payback: 100% of the entry fees plus $2,000 added. 75% of the total purse will be split between the winning team. The remaining 25% will be paid out to the 3 fastest times of the finals paid 50%, 30%, 20%. Example: If there are 40 teams X 100 EF= $4,000 + $2,000 added = $6,000 purse. 75% is $4,500 split between winning team ($900 each) 25% is $1,500 paid to 3 fastest times. $750 to the fastest, $450 to second, $300 to third.

Who Do You See?

Was I radically exceptional shoveling snow in -35 degree temperatures for three hours during the recent snow storm? I was until the guy across the street shoveled, too! It didn’t detract from what I was doing, but I was just like someone else. Am I radically exceptional because I write, speak or take pictures? Is it because I’m pursuing my purpose in life? Could it be because I’m trying to listen to God more and me less? Not really! There are lots of people, who are doing those things and have done them for years. So, what I’m doing doesn’t make me exceptional. It certainly doesn’t make me radically so. Radical living begins only when the comparisons stop! I cannot succeed in being all I was designed to be until I stop looking around. The measuring stick for my life is not held by anyone else, unless I give it to them to hold. Focusing on others only serves to distract or discourage me. Waiting for their approval means I’ve given them power. In the horse world, everything is about comparison. Our horses are judged by someone else or our horses race against other horses. We know it is a contest between horses, but we feel like it is a competition between us and the other rider or trainer. That’s the competitive/comparative nature of human beings. We want to know how we measure up to others! So, how do I become radically exceptional? First, for me, I listen to the voice of God! He is speaking. The question is whether I’m listening. Second, regardless of who decides the course of your life, listening isn’t enough. I have to do! I can watch all the horse training videos available, but if I never get in the round pen to apply them, my horses will never be different.

Who do you see in the mirror? Is who you know looking back at you the same as others see? How much of your life is an illusion for the benefit of public image and reputation? As part of my New Year’s Revolution, I said I wanted to “Live Radically Exceptional”! I want to go beyond the average, the normal, the expected. As the Army says, “I want to be all I can be!”

To you, I might sound crazy if I speak of listening to God. You can decide to be radically exceptional on your own terms. You might believe you need no guidance from anyone, but you. You’ve decided to make all the decisions on your own. That’s a choice only you can make. I do know, regardless of who is making the decisions, exceptionality does not come in comparison with others. It only comes looking in the mirror!

Management of Chronic Tying Up Syndrome There is no set treatment protocol for the management of horses with recurrent episodes of tying-up, but some general recommendations can be made. For situations in which a nervous disposition might be an important factor for tying-up, steps to calm the horse are important. Day-to-day management routines should be evaluated and changes made where needed. Sometimes moving the horse’s location in the barn to be away from main traffic areas or close to horses with quiet dispositions or under veterinary supervision, administration of low doses of a tranquilizer prior to exercise may help. A regular exercise program is important. Affected horses should be exercised daily. Long periods of complete stall rest (more than two days) should be avoided, particularly in very fit horses. Even when episodes of tying-up occur, rest periods should be kept to a minimum and the horse returned to its normal routine as quickly as possible. Horses with RER can be returned to exercise when values for serum CK are within normal limits. Horses with PSSM often are very gradually re-

introduced to a few minutes of exercise a day regardless of serum CK. PSSM horses should be worked gradually starting with only two to three minutes and adding a few minutes each day. After three weeks, CK can be re-evaluated and riding for 30 minutes can begin. Long recovery periods tend to increase the risk of recurrence when training is resumed. Warm-ups should be gradual and thorough. Overexertion is a risk factor for tying-up therefore increases in the duration and intensity of training sessions should be gradual.

Page 34

Feeding programs should be evaluated. Easily implemented dietary changes have proven effective in the control of chronic tying-up. The most important consideration is a reduction in grain feeding with addition of fat (e.g., corn oil, soya oil, or rice bran) to ensure adequate

energy in the diet. If electrolyte imbalances are suspected, salt (one tablespoon of salt (NaCl) and Lite salt (KCL) per day) should be added to the ration. The diet might also require additional vitamin E and/or selenium. The diet must contain adequate fiber. As an absolute minimum, each day horses should consume 1% of their body weight in forage and preferably 2%. An 1,100-pound horse would need 11 to 22 pounds of hay daily. Overall energy balance is important and it is critical to provide enough energy to meet the demands of exercise training and to maintain body condition. It long has been recognized that reducing the level of grain feeding reduces the risk of tying-up. A study in the 1930s demonstrated that working draft horses were more likely to tie-up if fed a diet high in carbohydrates such as that provided by grains and molasses. Addition of fat to the diet of horses prone to tying-up is beneficial for two main reasons. Diets high in carbohydrates can cause excitement. A reduction in grain/sugar feeding with addition of fat to the diet may calm these horses. For horses with PSSM, the underlying problem is one of excess carbohydrate storage in muscle. Therefore grain and sugar feeding simply make matters worse by providing sugar for glycogen synthesis. It therefore is important to completely eliminate grain, sweet feed, and other simple sugars from the diet and to provide fat as an alternative source of energy. There are various options for fat supplementation. These include vegetable oils such as corn and soya, rice bran which is a 20% fat product and purified animal fats. All these fat sources are very palatable. The diet should consist of good quality hay, a vitaminmineral mix, as small amount of grain as possible with a maximum five pounds, fat and

added salt. Beet pulp or soya hulls are both highly digestible fiber sources and provide an alternative means for provision of energy and might allow for complete elimination of grain from the diet. A combination of goodquality grass hay, one to two pounds of rice bran, and a vitamin-mineral mix works well for horses with PSSM when combined with daily exercise and turnout. there is no cure for horses with chronic forms of tying-up, such as RER and PSSM. A combination of regular exercise, daily turnout, changes in environment and diet have been a successful combination that has allowed many affected horses to return to competition. How much fat should be added to the diets of horses with chronic exertional rhabdomyolysis? Low-grain, fat-supplemented diets are beneficial in the management of horses prone to repeated episodes of tying-up. A highfat palatable diet in horses will be between 10% to 12% fat. To meet the high-energy requirements of racehorses in training, some level of grain feeding is required in addition to fat supplementation. For Thoroughbred and Quarter horse racehorses and barrel horses

with chronic tying-up, diets with some grain but not more than five pounds per day and supplemental fat such that fat represents, by weight 10% to 12% of the diet are beneficial for prevention of the problem. The situation is different for horses with polysaccharide storage myopathy. With PSSM, feeding grain is not allowable. This restriction also applies to other simple sugars, such as molasses. Therefore do not feed beet pulp that has added molasses. Fortunately, these horses often are easy-keepers and many times do well on a diet of hay, pasture, a small amount of a fat supplement such as one to two pounds of rice bran, and a vitamin-mineral supplement. While there is no cure for horses with chronic forms of tying-up such as RER and PSSM, a combination of regular exercise, daily turnout, changes in environment, and diet have been a successful combination that has allowed many affected horses to return to competition. Tying up syndrome is a disease which requires an accurate diagnosis and a careful and well thought out management program.

Happy Valentine’s Day! Hi... I hope everybody

is doing well and survived the blizzard... and the below zero wind chills. I’m almost recovered from knee surgery. I took a little vacation before going back to school and got a little sun (Florida)...and I mean a little...!!! I wore a coat the whole time I was there! I did get a chance to interview one of my sunshine friends while I was there.....

Name: Megan Rogers Age: 17 Where do you live? Dade City Florida Parents: Dennis & Tammie Rogers Where do you go to school? Pasco High School What grade? 12th Siblings? One sister. Jessica Story - 26 yrs old Do your parents ride? My dad rode a lot as a kid. Not as much now but still helps me ride whenever I ask him to or if I have a lot of horses at a barrel race he will help me. Who taught you to ride? My dad taught me how to ride a horse and barrel racing I kind of picked up on my own and was determined to steadily progress. Other hobbies? I also played volleyball for my school, I love going fishing or doing anything out on the boat as well. I would have to say that I would prefer rodeos over big horse shows because my horse “Kitty” prefers the loud open atmosphere like the rodeos have. Have you ever seen snow? I’ve seen snow once in my life. It was when we went on a family vacation to Tennessee when I was about 3 years old Have you ever been to Indiana? No I have never been to Indiana Any animals other than horses? Besides my horses, I have four dogs. Oscar, Roxy, Bella and my newest addition, Cinch - aka “bad puppy” - and a barn cat named Velcro. Favorite show and why? I would have to say that my favorite show is the Pasco county fair rodeo because it’s my hometown and it’s a great feeling to see all my friends and family come out to support me. What are your accomplishments? I started out as the tot barrel racing champion back in 2004. 2006 I won my first youth 1D championship at the NBHA district level and since then I’ve been the 1D champion or reserve champion for open and youth for the past 8 years. I won the Open 3D championship in 2011 and Youth 3D championship in 2007 at the Florida state show. 2012 I joined the WPRA as a Junior member and finished in the top 5 in the southeastern circuit and also finished top 5 in 2013. I won the Lakeland Pro Rodeo and the River Ranch 2D championship in 2012 as well. Also have won numerous barrel races all over the state of Florida.

Tell me about your horses (age/ color/quirks/ gender and anything else you want to add): Docs Black Cat aka “Scat” is my 25 year old mare that has won me some of those championships. She’s a bay and still to this day acts like she’s only 5. JMD Sweet Doll aka “Molly” is my 19 year old sorrel mare that is currently pregnant. I was running her all the way up until 2012 so she has also taken part in many of those championships. You can not tie Molly on the trailer though because she will set back immediately. She has to be put on a Clinton Anderson tie ring. Sandy Dandy Bar aka “Kitty” is my current top horse. She is a 9 year old roan mare. Has a huge heart and loves her job. She has won me a lot of my current championships. Kitty’s favorite thing after she has a good run, is mints. She gets very mad if she doesn’t get mints pretty quick after her run. Cowgirl is my up and coming mare. She is a 15 year old sorrel mare. This mare was practically given to me and was suppose to be only 6. Well by the time I got her home she was 13 and absolutely crazy. You could barely ride her or tie her or do anything. I didn’t think she was going to turn out to be much so I didn’t put much time into her. Although lately I’ve put some real training into her and she is currently running in the 1D with my other top horse. Blue Dot Com AH aka “Blu” is a 6 year old black gelding that I am currently riding and seasoning for my vet and friend. He is currently clocking 2D times and shows a lot of potential for his future. Who is your mentor and why? I technically don’t have a mentor but I do look up to Sabra O’Quinn. She has helped so many people and I

w/Clint Van

rode a little bit with her a couple years ago as well. She is amazing with every type of horse you bring her and is very knowledgable. Do you show year around? I hear it’s really hot in Florida in August. Yes, I do rodeo/ barrel race year round. Although during the summer months, I don’t do it as often. I pick and chose the rodeos/barrel races I want to go to and try to make most of them night shows. Any advice to fellow barrel racers? My advice to fellow barrel racers is to never give up. If your having bad runs and can’t seem to get out of a rut that your in, keep trying. We all go through hard times but if it’s your dream and what you really want to do, you should keep pushing towards it. What are your goals after school? My goals after high school is to rodeo the first couple years while doing school online and then I plan to attend UF to become a veterinarian.

He has grown up in the horse world, both parents have rode almost all their life...Clint's grandfather as some of you may remember was the late Terry VanVolkenburgh, who would run up and down the fences when his daughters would run barrels. Clint began barrel racing at the age of 4 with a pony, then went on to particpate in Jr. Rodeo and his favorite event was the sheep riding, hard to believe he is now a barrel racer. He has won the Ohio Youth NBHA and Indiana Youth and Open NBHA , he has also won the Congress youth barrel four times, and was runner up in the Congress Sweepstakes. He placed at Josey Jr. world numerous times, and won the NBHA Youth World 1D in 2006. He loves to barrel race and is now trying his hand at the futurities. In Clint's spare time he mows grass for a part time job and is also very active in his church where he and his cousins are bible school helpers. Clint also volunteers one day a week at a school in Cincinatti where he spends time tutoring other kids in reading.

IJRA News

IJRA Rodeo News Honoring the Partners Story provided by: Rachel Thomas

T

he Indiana Junior Rodeo Association has created so many memories, friendships, and opportunities for families who have been members during the twenty plus years it has been in existence. Our families and members are such an important part of our association, but those families and members will be the first to tell you that the names that helped to make the memories, friendships, and opportunities are never listed in the standings. This month, a few of the members would like to put the spotlight on their favorite athletes, partners, and friends. What does it take to be a junior rodeo horse? What horse can fill such big shoes? Ask some of the parents and you’ll get a wide variety of answers, but each one will tell you why their horse is so important to their family. Junior rodeo horses “are” family. Some of the horses and ponies in our association have been rodeoing longer than some of the families they live with. Junior rodeo horses have names like Weapon, Scooby, Mack, Juju, Buckle,

Bunny, Spanky, Honey, King, Ginger, and Jo Jo. They are irreplaceable, loved, and cherished. Junior rodeo horses have helped us raise our children. Junior rodeo horses have taught our children lessons in ways we never could. They carry our children safely in a hot lap during the Grand Entry, they go slow when they’re starting out, they are there when they rope their first calf, and they are there to soak up their tears when the day was just a little too tough. It’s the junior rodeo horse that you watch take your child through the barrels at their first rodeo, steady and true even though your stomach is in knots and your eyes are full of tears.

Buckle

Buckle has taught Drew, Brooke, Kaylee, and now Emmalyn all to ride. He is truly one in a million!

Junior rodeo horses some in every variety and flavor. Old, slick, short, athletic, slow, fast, been-there-donethat, or new kid on the block. The resume is never the same, but the biggest characteristic in the good ones is, it’s all in the heart. A junior rodeo horse loves it, loves their kids, loves the noise, loves to carry that flag, and loves to do what they are so good at doing. That is why the good ones are loved and shared with other families. Our IJRA families and kids are blessed with so many great athletes, with hearts larger than we could ever imagine. Our hearts are endlessly thankful for them.

The following includes a little bit about what some of the IJRA kids had to say about their horses and ponies. No matter how many years pass you will never forget all those amazing horses that gave you so much in IJRA. They become your best friends and each one of them will always be special for a different reason. It could be that one horse or pony that helped you win the all-around, or the one who no matter what, could make your day be the best. All of those times thy made you laugh, and all of those times they helped you become a better rider. You ride so many horses yet

Jag

they all become your best friends at some point in time. They are always there and most of the time they can turn those horrible days into the most amazing day of the whole year. As the years pass in IJRA you see so many wonderful horses. And they are all somebody’s best friend. The horses I have ridden through IJRA mean a lot to me. Without them I would not be where I am today. I have been through so many things with them. They are always there for me. Ginger is the first horses I remember riding in IJRA. She would always put me where I needed to be. If anything ever happened to Sage and Jag: her I would be Older sister really sad. Sage taking The second horse her sister Drew I remember riding through the in IJRA is Jag. barrels with He always tried Ginger during a his hardest to do Preschool rodeo in 2007; Drew & whatever I wanted. When he tore his Ginger in 2011; Spunky and tendon I thought Drew in 2012 that no other horse could be better. He is one of my best friends and I hope he will always be there for me. He can’t run as fast as he used to before he tore his tendon but he is still an amazing horse. After Jag tore his tendon I started riding my sister’s pony Spunky. He and I didn’t and still don’t make the perfect pair, but always after I would make a run that fell apart I would always end up laughing and saying, “He is CERTAINLY NOT my pony.” I always got a laugh from how horrible my runs were on him. I practiced and we got better but we weren’t great. He would get me close to where I needed to be, but not there. Trying to ride Spunky wasn’t getting me far and my dad had just bought a new rope horse. So we decided to try Shorty in barrels and poles. Well you couldn’t say it was horrible you just couldn’t say that it was great. We practiced and got better and then he became my roping horse to. He was much better at roping and he got my exactly where I needed to be. After all those amazing horses and ponies the horse I am riding today is Scooter. She means the whole world to me. Even though I haven’t had her long we make a great team. She is the perfect horse for me and I love her so much. I can tell her everything and she’ll just keep on listening. She knows the best ways to cheer me up and she always makes riding her the best time ever. ] All those horses I have ridden have always meant everything to me. If I didn’t have them I wouldn’t have had so much fun rodeoing. Because of them I love rodeo and IJRA. The horses I have ridden will always be one of my BEST friends. -Sage Thomas

Scooby

Have you ever seen a pony that is as cute as a button? Have you ever seen a pony run as fast as the wind? Have you ever seen a pony that prances with excitement when he sees the start of a barrel and pole pattern? Have you ever seen a pony a gelding that has to wear zebra strips? Have you ever seen a pony that bucks off your brother and cousin? Have you ever seen a pony that never gives up even when he is injured? Have you ever seen a pony that loves a little girl? Well I have, and his name is Scooby! ~Kinlyn’s Yadon and Scooby My 28-year old pony is Mitzee. She is a P.O.A. and half-Arabian. She is a very good rodeo pony. Her favorite event is pole bending. She can fly through the poles. She also likes to run barrels, flags, keyhole and dash for cash events. She was my mother’s pony and was in the Indiana State Fair in the flag race. She won lots of ribbons, trophies and prizes with my mom. I am riding her now in 4-H and Indiana Junior Rodeo. She also prances when I ride her in color guard and parades. On her 28th birthday (Sept. 15), we brought cupcakes to the horse show to celebrate. We took her to the vet to get her teeth floated. She didn’t like that very much. She wears a pink zebra coat in the winter. I am going to ride her in 2014 in zebra tack and my shirt, boots and belt are zebra too. I love my pole bending pony. ~ Hailey Condry, New Palestine, IN

Wings As Eagles

w/ Christa Conway

Isaiah 40:31 King James Version (KJV) 31 But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. I have heard that verse of scripture many times in my life. I have always associated it with God giving us strength and referenced it when going through a tough time to reassure me that I can overcome. Over the years I have read a few daily devotional messages referring to this scripture and Isaiah’s reference to eagles. I thought I would do a little research on eagles and their habits and elaborate a little on what I have read over the years. Soaring above the storm The eagle is the only bird that flies directly into a thunderstorm. Other birds fly away and seek shelter, not the eagle. This could be an example of how God does not permit storms in our life to defeat us but for the purpose of benefiting us. You see, turbulent winds cause the eagle to fly higher and lift him above to a better view and away from danger. Hmmm, got you thinking? The updrafts take the eagle to great heights as he soars along with them. From this higher position his sharp eyes are able to see more and he leaves behind all distractions. The eagle actually benefits from the winds of a storm. As Christians, we are like the eagle. We also face storms in our life, but the power of the Christian to rise above the pressures and temptations comes from our knowledge of Christ’s sacrifice and love for us. We can rise above the storms of life if we will wait upon the Lord and seek His will. Stepping out in faith Another interesting fact about eagles is referred to in Deuteronomy 32:11 (KJV.) As an eagle stirreth up her nest, fluttereth over her young, spreadeth abroad her wings, taketh them, beareth them on her wings: When a baby eaglet is old enough to take his first flight, he is very reluctant. One of the first things a mother eagle will do is to “stir up the nest” by moving around the twigs and base so to make it uncomfortable to the eaglet.

Page 44

The parents will then begin to feed the eaglet less often. Although they are always close by and continue to keep watch over their young, they will withhold food to increase the young one’s desire to eat. The eaglet will then begin to “attack” old skins in the nest and begin to hone his own hunting skills. The parents will then swoop by the nest with fresh meat in their talons, just out of reach of their youngster...encouraging him to jump and spread his wings. He will jump and sometimes the wind will hold him above the nest for seconds until he lands back where he feels safe. When the youngster finally uses the combination of the desire for food, the encouragment of his parents and the wind beneath his wings....he learns to soar! Sometimes the landing is a little rough at first, but after his first try, mom and dad drop him a nice meal.

How about that? Seems like that is saying that sometimes when we get uncomfortable in our “safe” spots it may be time to move on. Maybe that is God encouraging us to take a leap of faith towards that thing we are desiring/ needing. (Of course, it should be something that aligns with his will....the parent eagles aren’t tempting the eaglet with something he shouldn’t have.) The best part of this comparison to the baby eagle is that after we finally put our faith in Him and take that leap, He will provide for us, just as the parent eagles continue to care for their young! He will help us to gain our “wings” until we are strong enough to face the storms! Mount up (with wings and fly!) Happy Trails & God Bless! Christa

SCHOOLIN’ The boys were restin` for a bit It was go’na be a long day When we seen dust in the air A wagon was headin` our way

Bill slapped him on the back Said remember your first day Chet dropped his head And walked over Coys way

I can’t ride a horse Never branded a single cow But the Ramrods paw told me Y’all would show me how

The Ramrod kind`a smiled Said boy’s that’ll be Coy He’s a new hand But not much of a cowboy

He said well it’s ok We were takin` a little break I know you’re doin` your best This was just a mistake

So fellers here I am Hope y’all will help me learn Chet smiled and said we will Cause we have hair to burn

When he hit the camp He was yellin` at the team I’ve been around a bit But this beat all I’d ever seen

Coy said thanks there pard I’m new at this cowboy stuff And to be honest boys The ride’s been pretty rough

That iron there is hot Them cows there need a brand So welcome to the ranch You’ll make a top hand

We had to run for our lives To get out of the way Coy said sorry fellers This is my first day

When I told my friends Cowboying was for me They all laughed in my face And said it would never be

One Last (& most important) thought… Salvation is a gift and a choice......

Happy Valentines Day!!! Read past issues of our Christian Cowboy Collection and the Christian Barrel Racer’s Newsletter at the website below!

Jesus died on the cross as the final sacrifice for our sins. He was resurrected on the 3rd day and he defeated death and Satan for us. All we have to do is believe that He beat death, acknowledge it with our words and and accept Him as our personal savior. That’s when the rebirth happens and we are changed! He then promises us eternal life with Him in Heaven! You can’t earn your way into Heaven; you have to accept His gift of salvation. So many people think they “aren’t good enough” to get to Heaven… But… Salvation is a GIFT from God and you don’t earn a gift. Gifts are given to you and for the gift to be yours, you have to accept it. All we have to do is accept this wonderful gift. I know I have…won’t you?

But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. Romans 5:15 For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Romans 10: 9-10

The Breeders’ Cup

Breeders’ Cup 2013

F

or the second consecutive year, the Breeders’ Cup returned to Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. Here is a look back at the the wonderful two day event that is Thoroughbred Racing’s World Championships. Friday, November 1, 2013 Marathon (Gr. 2) - 1 3/4 Miles on Dirt - $500,000 Winner: London Bridge Jockey: Mike Smith Trainer: Jo Huges Owner: Waratah Thoroughbreds Friday kicked off with the longest of all Breeders’ Cup races, the Marathon. While Commander set the pace in the grueling Marathon, London Bridge raced comfortably in mid pack and to the outside of his fellow contenders. Blueskiesnrainbows took over the lead the second time down the backstretch and maintained in that position until London Bridge circled the field on the far outside and closed the last sixteenth of a mile with a ferocious kick. London Bridge won the Marathon by 1 length over Blueskiesandrainbows while extending jockey Mike Smith’s record to an 18th Breeders’ Cup victory.

Clockwise from top left: Seabiscuit awaits the start of the 30th Breeders’ Cup; The San Gabriel Mountains serve as Santa Anita’s picturesque backdrop; Kicking off the World Championships; London Bridge wins the first of the 14 Breeders’ Cup races when he closes late on the far outside and passes the grueling Marathon test with Mike Smith aboard

The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (Gr. 1) - 1 Mile on Turf - $1,000,000 Winner: Outstrip (GB) Jockey: Mike Smith Trainer: Charles Appleby Owner: Godolphin Racing Outstrip broke slowly and settled at the back of the pack at the onset of the 1 mile turf race. Meanwhile, Bobby’s Kitten set the fastest quarter in the race’s history, subsequently setting up a potential late closing run for the juveniles lagging behind. Giovanni Boldini made a bold move around the turn and began grinding for the lead while challenging the tiring pacesetter. Outstrip followed down the center of the track and closed with a late charge similar to that of London Bridge one race earlier. While Giovanni Boldini eventually ran down Bobby’s Kitten, Outstrip outclassed them both and got up by 1/2 length at the wire. The victory made it two wins in two races for jockey Mike Smith and extended his record to now 19 Breeders’ Cup wins overall.

Dirt Mile (Gr. 1) - 1 Mile on Dirt - $1,000,000 Winner: Goldencents Jockey: Rafael Bejarano Trainer: Doug O’Neill Owner: W.C. Racing, Dave Kenney and RAP Racing From the moment the gates opened there was no denying that the Dirt Mile belonged to Goldencents. The speedy 3-yearold broke immediately for lead and set blazing fractions around the Santa Anita dirt oval. Despite setting the fastest half mile in the races history, Goldencents continued to roll and began opening up at the top of the stretch. While Golden Ticket attempted to run down his younger counterpart, Goldencents remained much the best and romped to a 2 3/4 length win in one of the most visually impressive performances of the Breeders’ Cup weekend.

Juvenile Fillies Turf (Gr. 1) - 1 Mile on Turf $1,000,000 Winner: Chriselliam (IRE) Jockey: Richard Hughes Trainer: Charles Hill Owner: Willie Carson, Chris Wright & Emily Asprey The Juvenile Fillies Turf followed suit of the preceding two races with Nesso breaking quickly and setting fast fractions around the turf course. Chriselliam held back and bided her time before eventually inching toward the lead. By the time they entered the stretch, Chriselliam had moved close to the front and made an easy move around the outside before taking over mid-stretch and powering to an impressive 2 1/2 length win. Left to right: Outstrip gets up late to take the Juvenile Turf and makes it two-for-two for jockey Mike Smith to start the Breeders’ Cup card; Speedy 3-year-old, Goldencents, wires the field and romps to victory in the Dirt Mile with Rafael Bejarano up; Chriselliam gives international horses their third victory in the first four Breeders’ Cup races, when she takes the Juvenile Fillies Turf with jockey Richard Hughes in record time for the race

Story & Photos by: Steve Heuertz Distaff (Gr. 1) - 1 1/8 Miles on Dirt - $2,000,000 Winner: Beholder Jockey: Gary Stevens Trainer: Richard Mandella Owner: Spendthrift Farm The highlight of Breeders’ Cup Friday was undoubtably the Distaff and the rematch between two-time defending champion, Royal Delta, and the fantastic 3-year-old filly, Princess of Sylmar. Last out, these two

Beholder

battled through the stretch in the Beldame Stakes at Belmont Park before the younger “Princess” overtook and upset her legendary adversary. With the showdown set, the field broke from the gate and multiple Eclipse Award winner, Royal Delta, storms for the lead before settling in second and giving way to Authenticity. Princess of Sylmar sat back and off the pace in fifth and in front of only Street Girl. Meanwhile, fellow 3-year-old, Beholder (second to Princess of Sylmar in the Kentucky Oaks earlier in the year), rated in third and just to the outside of Royal Delta. However, down the backstretch Royal Delta appeared to tire and Beholder made for second behind Authenticity. Royal Delta fell further back and into fourth but remained one spot ahead of Princess of Sylmar. As the field hit the top of the stretch, Beholder and jockey Gary Stevens cruised to the lead and never looked back. The overlooked Beholder dominated the field in winning by a stellar 4 1/4 lengths while giving her a second Breeders’ Cup win after she took the Juvenile Fillies one year earlier. The victory also continued the remarkable comeback of Gary Stevens while adding to his illustrious riding career. Royal Delta finished a disappointing fourth and Princess of Sylmar and even more disappointing sixth. The Breeders’ Cup

Saturday, November 2, 2013 Juvenile Fillies - (Gr. 1) - 1 1/16 Miles on Dirt - $2,000,000 Winner: Ria Antonia Jockey: Javier Castellano Trainer: Jeff Bonde Owner: M. Dedomenico, A. Aldrich, L. Hernandez, S. Downey & P. Lebherz

Breeders’ Cup Saturday got off to an exciting start in the Juvenile Fillies. She’s a Tiger made a sharp move breaking from the outside and taking the lead while racing wide around the clubhouse turn. Long shot Ria Antonia sat comfortably in the middle of the pack and moved into fourth as the field began their turn for home. At the top of the stretch, She’s a Tiger maintained her lead while Ria Antonia moved into second and the two engaged in a duel for the wire. Although She’s a Tiger crossed the wire first, an inquiry yielded that the winner had drifted out and impeded the path of Ria Antonia. She’s a Tiger was disqualified and placed second and Ria Antonia was awarded the biggest victory of her young racing career.

Story & Photos by: Steve Heuertz Filly & Mare Turf - (Gr. 1) - 1 1/4 Miles on Turf $2,000,000 Winner: Dank (GB) Jockey: Ryan Moore Trainer: Sir Michael Stoute Owner: James Wigan The start of the Filly & Mare Turf saw Emollient, Dank and Marketing Mix each join the party and work for the lead. Emollient eventually took over herself while Dank sat a close length behind and just to her outside. However, around the turn Dank made a swift move to the outside of Emollient and passed the leader in a few quick strides. The classy European invader seemingly played with her would be challengers but would let none pass as she cruised to a 1/2 length victory.

Filly & Mare Sprint (Gr. 1) - 7 Furlongs on Dirt - $1,000,000 Winner: Groupie Doll Jockey: Rajiv Maragh Trainer: William Bradley Owner: Fred F. Bradley, William B. Bradley, Carl Hurst & Brent Burns Sweet Lulu broke from the far outside and took the immediate lead in the Filly & Mare Sprint. Defending champion, Groupie Doll, had broke just from Sweet Lulu’s inside but gave way to the leader and sat mid-pack. As they raced down the backstretch, Groupie Doll began flashing her brilliant speed while setting sight on the pacesetter. Sweet Lulu gave way to Teddy’s Promise around the turn and Groupie Doll continued her run from the outside. By the time the field hit the stretch the champ had taken the lead. Groupie Doll fired down the center of the track and fought off late charges by Judy the Beauty and Dance Card. The victory gave Groupie Doll and jockey Rajiv Maragh back-to-back victories in the race and maintained their overall dominance in the Filly & Mare Sprint division.

Geico Turf Sprint (Gr. 1) - 6 1/2 Furlongs on Turf $1,000,000 Winner: Mizdirection Jockey: Mike Smith Trainer: Mike Puype Owner: Jungle Racing One race after Groupie Doll’s repeat performance, fellow Breeders’ Cup champion, Mizdirection, looked for a similar outcome as she took on the boys in the Geico Turf Sprint. Breaking from far outside, Mizdirection made a quick move to establish position in third as the field raced downhill in the always exciting Turf Sprint. Mizdirection drifted slightly back but was clear and to the outside of the leaders. With tremendous turn of foot, the game filly ran down the field in the stretch and matched Groupie Doll with her own back-to-back Breeders’ Cup win. Aboard Mizdirection, Mike Smith gained his 20th Breeders’ Cup win and continued to add to his growing record.

The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (Gr. 1) - 1 1/16 Miles on Dirt - $2,000,000 Winner: New Year’s Day Jockey: Martin Garcia Trainer: Bob Baffert Owner: Gary and Mary West

As is the case every year, the Juvenile field broke from the gate and looked to take that first important step toward their 3-year-old season and a potential bid at the Kentucky Derby and Triple Crown. Conquest Titan made the lead as Strong Mandate sat in second with favorite, Havana, racing in fourth. Conquest Titan set a fast pace before giving way to Strong Mandate. Havana moved to the outside and contested Strong Mandate for the lead as they made the turn for home. Havana overtook Strong Mandate as they entered the stretch, but New Year’s Day moved from off the pace and ducked inside and toward the rail. Havana fought valiantly, but New Year’s Day found an extra gear and ran down the favorite for a 1 1/4 length victory while taking one step closer to the first Saturday in May.

Turf (Gr. 1) - 1 1/2 Miles on Turf - $3,000,000 Winner: Magician (IRE) Jockey: Ryan Moore Trainer: Aidan O’Brien Owner: Michael B. Tabor, Derrick Smith & Susan Magnier

Top left to right: New Year’s Day and Martin Garcia close from the rail and take the Juvenile; New Year’s Day returns to his barn as fans in the paddock grab a quick look and the possible early Kentucky Derby favorite; Purple remains the color of the Breeders’ Cup and hats remain a staple of horse racing fashion; Horse-man-ship; Magician astonishes the crowd with a fierce stretch run to win the Turf with Ryan Moore up; Happy to be Turf Champions

Teaks North made the lead in the strenuous 1 1/2 mile Turf with defending champ, Little Mike, rating in second position. The 95-1 long shot set reasonable fractions at the start of the race, however the pace began to quicken as the field moved through 1/2 and 1 mile. Little Mike took over the lead as they rounded the turn for home while favorite, The Fugue, moved up and into third. The Fugue continued his move into the stretch and took the lead while late charging, Magician, barreled down the center of the track and hit the wire 1/2 length in front of the favorite. The victory gave jockey Ryan Moore his second Breeders’ Cup victory of the day (the first occurring aboard Dank).

Sum of the Parts broke swiftly and made for a blazing lead with Private Zone and Fast Bullet right behind. Gentlemen’s Bet moved through on the rail and took the lead as the field rounded the turn. Further back, favorite, Secret Circle, moved five-wide around the turn and bid for the lead. Gentlemen’s Bet continued to fight on the rail but Secret Circle uncoiled down the center of the track and stormed into the lead. Laugh Track closed fast on the outside yet Secret Circle would not be caught as he crossed the wire in front by a neck. The victory was the second of the day for both jockey Martin Garcia and trainer Bob Baffert (the first occurring with New Year’s Day for both) and was the second Breeders’ Cup win for Secret Circle as he previously won the Juvenile Sprint in 2011. The victory was even more impressive considering Secret Circle was making only his second start after an 18-month layoff.

The Breeders’ Cup

Mile (Gr. 1) - 1 Mile on Turf - $2,000,000 Winner: Wise Dan Jockey: Jose Lezcano Trainer: Charles LoPresti Owner: Morton Fink

Wise Dan

Although it precedes the Breeders’ Cup Classic by one race, the Mile proved to be a classic in it’s own right. Featuring the reigning Horse of the Year, the Breeders’ Cup Mile offered the final chance for Wise Dan to bid for a repeat of racing’s most prestigious end-of-the-year award. Entering the gate, Wise Dan seemingly found himself in uncharted territory as he was coming off his first loss of the year after finishing second to Silver Max in the Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland. Nonetheless, the gutsy gelding aimed to prove his newfound doubters wrong and try for his second consecutive victory in the Mile. Without reg-

ular rider John Velazquez aboard (Velazquez had been injured in a fall earlier in the day), Wise Dan instead carried the weight of his backup rider, Jose Lezcano. The pair stumbled briefly out of the gate and found themselves far back as Silver Max made the early lead. Obviously took the lead the first time under the wire and Wise Dan settled back in eighth, only in front of two others and six lengths off the lead. Up front, Obviously continued his move in first as he set blazing fractions and the fastest opening 1/2 mile in Mile history. Wise Dan hung to the outside of the field as they circled for home and Obviously gave way to Za Approval. Now into the stretch and still racing in sixth position, Wise Dan dug deep into his champion heart and exploded with a run befitting of a Horse of the Year. Wise Dan hit the wire 3/4 of a length in front and instantly sealed the result as one of the greatest in Breeders’ Cup history. Top left to right: Wise Dan validates his bid to repeat as Horse of the Year with his second consecutive spectacular victory in the Mile with Jose Lezcano aboard; Wise Dan and Jose Lezcano remind the Santa Anita crowd of the brilliance readily on display at the Breeders’ Cup; Everyone aims to get their hands on one of these; The Breeders’ Cup statue on display at “The Great Race Place”

Classic (Gr. 1) - 1 1/4 Miles on Dirt $5,000,000 Winner: Mucho Macho Man Jockey: Gary Stevens Trainer: Katherine Ritvo Owner: Reeves Thoroughbred Racing As the crown jewel of the Breeders’ Cup, the Classic seems to repeatedly live up to it’s moniker and deliver a “classic” finish. One year earlier, and beneath the same mountainous backdrop, Fort Larned and Mucho Macho Man dueled through the stretch in one of the most thrilling finishes the sport has ever offered. That day, the front-running Fort Larned validated his year-long campaign by holding off the fierce run of Mucho Macho Man. One year later, Fort Larned aimed to defend his title while Mucho Macho Man took another shot at the race he just narrowly missed. Despite their fantastic finish from the previous year, Fort Larned and Mucho Macho Man were by no means the only stars of the show. Also entering the Classic were the dominant favorite and Horse of the Year contender, Game On Dude, the fan favorite and wonderful comeback-kid, Paynter, the up and coming 3-year-olds, Will Take Charge and Palace Malice and the forever game, Flat Out, among many others. Still, as the loaded field set to contest one another in America’s richest race, each individual’s previous accomplishments no longer mattered and, instead, legacies would become defined by performance when it mattered most. Top left to right: Finishing second to Fort Larned last year after a dramatic stretch duel, Mucho Macho Man makes the walk to be saddled and a second crack at the Classic; Entertaining the fans in-between races; Defending Classic champ, Fort Larned, is primed for a repeat performance with Brian Hernandez Jr.; The sun begins to set on the beautiful Santa Anita setting prior to the start of the Classic; Favorite Game On Dude and Mike Smith break for the lead with Fort Larned to their inside and 3-year-old, Moreno, on the rail; For the second year in a row, Mucho Macho Man (inside) finds himself in a desperate stretch duel as 3-year-old, Will Take Charge (outside), barrels down the stretch. However, this year, Mucho Macho Man finds a reverse in fortune as he holds off the late charging colt and wins the Classic with Gary Stevens; The valiant Will Take Charge almost ran down the older Mucho Macho Man and proved he is a superstar as well

The Breeders’ Cup

Mucho Macho Man

Top: Hall of Famer, Gary Stevens validates his return to riding with his first ever Classic win; Bottom: A classic race for a classic horse

As the California sun began to set and the shadows of palm trees grew longer, this final field loaded into the starting gate and broke away to the roar of the Santa Anita crowd. Game On Dude fired sharply onto his home track and aimed to redeem his disappointing performance from one year ago. Moreno flashed early speed alongside Game On Dude while the dueling 1-2 finishers of the previous year entered the fray at the front of the pack. Passing under the wire for the first time it was a three-way contest between Game On Dude, Fort Larned and Moreno. Mucho Macho Man gave way slightly and settled into fifth behind Declaration of War. The cat and mouse game continued at the front of the pack with the three leaders exchanging head bobs in front until Fort Larned asserted himself as the pacesetter midway down the backstretch.

Moreno began to fade on the inside and Mucho Macho Man moved for the lead and contested Fort Larned and Game On Dude as the fabulous field rounded the far turn. Palace Malice attempted his run at the leaders but couldn’t catch them. Mucho Macho Man rolled to the front and found himself this year leading the calvary charge as they entered the stretch while Game On Dude and Fort Larned fought to his inside. Declaration of War began to rally on the outside and Game On Dude faded and gave way to Fort Larned in second. Mucho Macho Man continued to go to work and fought on with memories of running down the same stretch just one year earlier. In a reversal of fortune from that classic stretch duel, Mucho Macho Man turned back Fort Larned and opened his lead. However, closing on the far outside and breezing down the center of the track, Will Take Charge turned on his tenacious late kick and aimed to spoil Mucho Macho Man’s bid at redemption. Gaining with every stride, Will Take Charge continued to grind toward the lead but Mucho Macho Man refused to be denied again. He hit the wire a nose in front. Mucho Macho Man was the Breeders’ Cup Classic champion.

The Breeders’ Cup

Story & Photos by: Steve Heuertz

The feel good story of perseverance and redemption extended beyond the valiant horse. Aboard, jockey Gary Stevens won his first Breeders’ Cup Classic and cemented his comeback season as nothing short of remarkable. For trainer Kathy Ritvo, the victory became the highlight of her career and proved even more special when considering the reality that she is a heart transplant survivor. As a result, the heart-pounding finish likely provided some of the greatest beats her heart ever felt. With Mucho Macho Man’s nose victory over Will Take Charge, the 2013 Breeders’ Cup had come to a close. As is the case every year, the World Championships left an indelible mark on the sport and helped stoke the fire of debate that would lead up to end-of-the-year honors. However, the calendar would eventually change and the racing world would begin it’s recalibration to set aim on the 2014 Breeders’ Cup, which, for the third year in a row will return to Santa Anita Park on October 31st and November 1st, 2014. Disregarded and discounted, this nine-year-old Red Dun Quarter Horse left his life as a ranch horse in South Dakota and ventured a new path into the life of Steve Heuertz in 2004. Shortly thereafter, a bond was formed that fully catapulted Steve into the world of the horse where he became fascinated with the wonderful capabilities of this majestic animal. Of particular interest were the speed, endurance and competitive spirit demonstrated by the equine heroes within the sport of Thoroughbred Racing. Although initially satisfied with observing from afar, Steve became increasingly captivated by the sport and turned toward capturing the splendor of racing via his other passion, photography. The result was a recipe where he could combine his great love for horses, racing and photography into one harmonious blend that was greater than the sum of its parts. Since then, racing has taken Steve across the country to such wonderful places as Saratoga Race Course, Churchill Downs, Santa Anita Park, Pimlico Race Course, Belmont Park, Keeneland and Hooiser Park. During these travels, Steve has been fortunate to witness and photograph equally wonderful races such as the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes (racing’s famed Triple Crown) as well as the Travers Stakes, Santa Anita Derby, Indiana Derby, Stephen Foster Handicap and Breeders’ Cup, among others. However, residing in the Chicago suburb of St. Charles, IL, Steve regularly Steve Heuertz; frequents Arlington Park and Hawthorne Race Course where he has enjoyed capturing magnificent races like the Arlington Steve’s horse and Million and Hawthorne Gold Cup. loyal friend, Cowboy, Today, Steve’s passion for horses, racing and photography is like a fire that continues to be stoked. the Keeneland Association. The two-day workshop brings together a wide cross-section of the breeding, racing and veterinary communities.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Carrie Vaught has been named as the Director of Membership & Marketing at the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (TOBA).

“We owe it to our athletes, both equine and human, to do all we can to ensure their safety and convening this summit to exchange ideas and develop new programs is one of the best ways we can do that,” said Edward L. Bowen, president, Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation.

Carrie is a graduate of Texas A&M University and joins TOBA after working at the United States Hunter Jumper Association (USHJA) as Educational Programs Manager.

The summit will be held in the Keeneland sales pavilion and it is open to the public; a live webcast will also be available.

She will be responsible for the continued development of the association’s membership, marketing and communications, as well as planning and implementing the association’s seminars and clinics. She brings to the table long-term equine experience combined with project management, event planning and marketing skills. “Carrie’s experience, enthusiasm and passion for the sport will be a tremendous asset to our membership and programs,” said TOBA president Dan Metzger. “We will continue our efforts to service the needs of owners and breeders and Carrie will be instrumental in the efforts to achieve our goals.” “I am excited for this opportunity to be involved with Thoroughbred owners and breeders,” Vaught said. “As a previous OTTB owner myself, I feel a direct connection with the industry and look forward to aiding in the continued growth of the sport.” TOBA, based in Lexington, Ky., was formed in 1961 and is a national trade organization of leading Thoroughbred breeders and owners. TOBA’s mission is to “improve the economics, integrity and pleasure of the sport on behalf of Thoroughbred owners and breeders.” Projects managed by TOBA include the American Graded Stakes Committee, Claiming Crown, Ownership Seminars, Ownerview.com and the Sales Integrity Program. TOBA provides international representation for U.S. owners and breeders on the International Grading and Race Planning Advisory Committee, International Cataloguing Standards Committee and International Breeders Federation. Thoroughbred Charities of America (TCA) is the charitable arm of TOBA. TOBA is the owner of The Blood-Horse Inc., and is represented on the Board of Directors of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association and the Racing Medication and Testing Consortium as founding members.

Welfare and Safety of the Racehorse Summit V Scheduled for July 8-9, 2014, at Keeneland

“The safety and welfare of our athletes is unquestionably priority No. 1,” said Keeneland President & CEO Bill Thomason. “Keeneland is proud to host this summit which has, in its brief history, a proven track record of successfully advancing initiatives that are vital to the integrity and health of racing.” A formal agenda and a list of speakers will be announced at a later date. Among the major accomplishments that have evolved from the previous four summits are the Equine Injury Database; the Jockey Injury Database; the Racing Surfaces Testing Laboratory, which provides science-based testing of racing surfaces to enhance safety for horse and rider; a uniform trainer test and study guide; the publication of stallion durability statistics; and the movement by state racing commissions to create regulations that void the claim of horses suffering fatalities during the conduct of the race. Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation is traditionally the nation’s leading source of private funding for equine medical research that benefits all breeds of horses. Since 1983, the foundation has provided approximately $19.9 million for 299 specific projects at 40 universities. Additional information about the foundation is available at grayson-jockeyclub.org.

I Want Out NOW.....

&

Miss Maybelline)

The BB Break (as I like to call it) was short-lived. She went back to her house and things went back to normal here. I am now Miss Maybelline’s entertainment again and my naps aren’t lasting as long. C’est la vie. (Yes, I know a little French...a little.) Since BB left, it has gotten COLD! And not just your regular, run of the mill, I hate winter so I’ll complain cause it’s cold, cold. I mean the “If you leave me outside longer than two minutes I’m small and I’ll die” kind of cold.

Changed My Mind, Let Me Back In!!

It has been snowing and below zero with the windchill at negative 40! This make is VERY hard to concentrate and do your business outside. Trust me on this one. The way I work it is I wait until I just cannot wait any longer...not one

minute. I just have to hope the people are paying attention when I finally decide to go. There have been a couple of close calls. I definitley make it quick. I think my record is like 10 seconds out and back in. Miss Maybelline, on the other hand, still thinks she can take her time. (This is her first winter.) She wanders around and sniffs the snow, noses around the shrubs...I’m already at the door saying, “she’s on her own!” She’ll learn. Thank God the people are more patient with her than I am. Taking care of business (quickly),
