LETTER FROM THE EDITOR A Letter from the Editor

W

ho keeps messing with the thermostat? My trees are even confused! They are growing buds in February! Hopfully by the time you read this Spring has sprung and Jack Frost has got lost.

Indiana weather this year has me confused. I’ve been spotted out in the barn in a t-shirt in February. Loving it, but it’s short lived. On those regular winter days, I have attended a few tack sales and started shopping for my horse so he’ll look sharp this summer. How aboutyou? The Hoosier Horse Fair is just around the corner and they have some great clinicians this year - no matter your discipline. I persoanlly can’t wait to watch the colt starting challenge! Maybe I’ll see you there. In this issue you’ll want to be sure and check out “Grand Slam” that features American Pharoah’s journey making history. Steve has outdone himself with the photographs on this one.

Until next month.... Keep think warm spring-like thoughts, they are apparently working every few days! Ha Ha! Start working on that winter hair your horse has sported the last few months and maybe even spend some time in the saddle. Be sure to make every second count....and don’t forget to count your blessings on horseback! God Bless and Ride Safe, Christa Conway

A Little “Barrel Talk”

If you have visited “Barrel Talk” on BarrelHorseWorld.com, then you’ll have an idea of what to expect here. Putting a Mare “Under Lights” Entails What? lhighquality Location: SE KS I get the overall idea of putting a mare under lights, would like a better description what that entails or is exactly? Thanks kboltwkreations In general mares start cycling when the days get longer/warmer so you are trying to “trick” her into thinking its the time of year for breeding by making it lighter longer/warmer for her with the use of lights. FlyingJT I don’t think temperature has any effect on them, just day light hours... BeanCounter I did this for my mare when I was wanting to breed in February for a January baby. I started putting her in the barn every day with lights two weeks before Thanksgiving up to her breeding date. I would bring her in before dusk and have to go back down and turn them off at 11pm every night. You also want to make sure the stall is fully lit with no shadows. ctdrumrunr I worked at a halter barn and the horses were kept under light about 20 hrs a day- had to use a clear glass 200 (i think) watt bulb or a higher watt is they come that way. I just remember it had to be a clear bulb. not sure on the exact time the lights were kept on but it was long, they shed out like crazy

Page 4

OutlawsLastDance I read somewhere that the use of lights trick works through their eyes. Their eyes seeing “daylight” sends signals to their brain that it is spring/summer and their brain tells the body to operate as though it is by way of shedding, cycling, etc. Nita Why would you want to make sure there are no shadows? Seems like you get a shadow from sunlight anyways. FlyingJT This is true, they make a new mask that mares wear and you don’t have to bother bringing them in at night. expensive but ingenious! soonergirl98 You put them under lights starting in November and you bring them in before dusk and you do it religiously until about Feb when they should start developing a follicle. I have a JOH daughter we have had under lights but we lost power with both Oklahoma Ice storms so she is just now starting to develop a follicle. I was hoping to breed her asap in Feb for a Jan baby. The vet said no shadows and to make sure her stall is well lit. We used 200 watt bulbs and my barn looks super bright at night! lol. Where do you get the mask? What is it called?

FlyingJT Equilume There are several people that I know of, that are using them and are having great success with them... BARRELHORSE USA Days start getting longer about DEC 21st each year increasing one minute per day and then moves to 2-3 minutes per day ... shortest day was Dec 22, 2015 Longest day will be June 20-22, 2016 and time will slowly shorten the days again ... Whether you use lights or not ..... always remember the first heat cycle is usually weak or false so wait on the next one with no drugs etc etc .. increasing the days with lights .... per several stud stations must be done early of a morning and then turned on again of an evening to get a good solid reaction from mares during the 16 hour days you have created with lights .. start well before sunrise and 2 hours before sunset ... 6am to 10pm is standard (use military time.. it makes it easier to figure 600 to 2200) Also if they start shedding while under lights, you get them pregnant and turn off the lights ....... it screws up their natural shedding routine and can shed and then grow winter hair back thinking it is already fall ... and have to shed again .. I have seen horses growing winter hair back or shedding all the way to

July .... Doing lights now will only confuse your natural start for heat cycles and may delay a mare having cycles or good normal cycles ... so be careful ... shipping CS IS EXPENSIVE ...GOOD LUCK . I have never considered using lights when breeding for barrel horses .. trying to get ahead a couple of months when the hard work for training on the pattern does not start until they are 3yo+ .. so 60 days is not going to help one way or another ... and if I lived where winters are cold cold cold ... I would stay with the norm and have my mares foal out in late April to early June because of the nasty weather ... BeanCounter I live in Texas and was not too concerned with foaling during the winter as it is usually mild. I had held my mare open in 2014 so I could specifically foal her FWOTR baby in January as it was going to be her last foal as we only breed for ourselves. Griz Wow - this is wild!

MY DadDy Always Said... One of the best pieces of advice I ever got was from a horse master. He told me to go slow to go fast. I think that applies to everything in life. We live as though there aren’t enough hours in the day but if we do each thing calmly and carefully we will get it done quicker and with much less stress. ~ Viggo Mortensen We’d love to hear what your Daddy Always said...Send’em in... thehorseresource@msn.com

Your 5 team members’ points will be added together and the 10 teams with the highest cumulative points will advance to the finals. Ex: If you have one team member win a division and the other 4 hit barrels or fall below the top 20 mark in any division then you would have 20 total points for your team. The short go will begin anew; all qualified teams begin short go with zero points. Winners of short go will be determined using the same points system. Payback: 100% of the entry fees plus $2,000 added. 75% of the total purse will be split between the winning team. The remaining 25% will be paid out to the 3 fastest times of the finals paid 50%, 30%, 20%. Example: If there are 40 teams X 100 EF= $4,000 + $2,000 added = $6,000 purse. 75% is $4,500 split between winning team ($900 each) 25% is $1,500 paid to 3 fastest times. $750 to the fastest, $450 to second, $300 to third.

Indiana Grand Race Course Stakes Nomination Form

QUARTER HORSE RACING

Important Information Regarding Existing Out of Competition Rules All horses nominated to stake races will be eligible for out of competition testing from the day of nomination. Several drugs were added to Out of Competition Testing including Cobalt, Zilpaterol, Ractopamine or any similar agent. If you have any questions about any of these rules, please refer to Indiana Code 71 IAC 8.5-2-5 and 71 IAC 8.5-3-4. You may also contact the Indiana Horse Racing Commission at http://www. in.gov/hrc/ or (317) 233-3120. How This Affects You • Once a horse is nominated to a stake race, he WILL be in the pool of horses used for selection of Out of Competition Testing. • If the owner/trainer has been contacted and notified their horse has been selected for Out of Competition Testing, that horse must be produced at the track by the time provided by the IHRC. • If the horse is not brought to the race track within the allotted time, the horse will be ineligible to race in Indiana for one year. • The current trainer MUST be named at the time of nomination. If there is a change of trainer at any time, the new information must be forwarded to the Q.H.R.A.I. immediately. If a nominated horse becomes lame, sick or for any other reason will NOT run in the trials or finals, he must be officially scratched through the QHRAI (prior to being contacted by IHRC) or he will remain eligible for ALL Out of Competition Rules. Except for stake races where high money earners are preferred, there will be no refunds of nominations or payments. By signing and submitting this stakes nomination form, the trainer is hereby agreeing to abide by Indiana Horse Racing code. Once this nomination is received by QHRAI, you will receive a reminder for next payment date and a list of nominated horses. Sustaining payments must be submitted on time whether or not you receive this reminder. Nominations and sustaining payments will be added to the stakes purses. A 20% marketing and administration fee will be withheld from all open stakes nomination and sustaining payments. Late payments - On High Money Earning Stakes (Indiana Grand Classic, Bradford Stake and Leader of the Class) If nomination is missed then the nomination of $100 plus $500 late fee must be postmarked by the sustaining payment date. On Stakes with Trials - If nomination is missed - double the missed nomination plus the first sustaining payment. Must be postmarked by the first sustaining payment date. Grand Slam

A Photographic Storybook of American Pharoah

and the 2015 Breeders’ Cup

O

n October 30th and 31st, the the bluegrass of Lexington, Kentucky and historic Keeneland Racecourse played host to the 2015 Breeders’ Cup World Championships. The especially memorable weekend was highlighted by the presence of American Pharoah and the first opportunity for a Triple Crown winner to compete in the event. With American Pharoah targeting a start in the $5,000,000 Breeders’ Cup Classic, the racing world awaited the possibility that the 12th Triple Crown winner could take the Classic and become the first horse to capture what was billed as the “Grand Slam.” This is a photographic journey American Pharoah’s quest and the rest of first Breeders’ Cup ever held in the hometown of American Thoroughbred racing. Flashback

Story & Photos by: Steve Heuertz

Just two months before the Breeders’ Cup it became unclear if American Pharoah would continue his career as a race horse. In what would become his final start before the Breeders’ Cup, American Pharoah suffered the second loss of his career when he finished 3/4 of a length behind late running Keen Ice in the Travers Stakes at Saratoga Racecourse. This is a brief look back at American Pharoah’s time at Saratoga and what some feared would be his final race.

Top L to R: The arrival of American Pharoah at Saratoga demonstrated the level of his celebrity. Media greeted him at the airport and thousands of fans showed up on the Friday morning before the Travers just to watch the Triple Crown Champion gallop. The scene was unlike any gallop many witnessed before and American Pharoah seemed to feed off the energy from the crowd. In fact, he may have worked a little too fast and i’s possible this extra effort negatively impacted his Travers run the following day; - American Pharoah follows many greats before him that also walked over the legendary Saratoga grounds. His presence at the track inspired many to refer to it as “Pharoahtoga” during Travers week; American Pharaoh poses outside his Saratoga barn; Attendance was capped on Travers day and anyone without a ticket purchased in advance was denied entry to the track. Still, people lined the streets outside just to get a glimpse of American Pharoah as he walked over from his barn before the Travers; Despite the anticipation and excitement of the week, “The Graveyard of Champions” held true to it’s moniker as Keen Ice upsets the Travers with American Pharoah finishing in second. It was American Pharoah’s first loss since he broke his maiden as a two-year-old. The defeat also meant that Whirlaway remained the only Triple Crown winner to also win the Travers; For only the second time (the other being his first start), American Pharoah didn’t enter the winner’s circle after a race. As if it were almost a “rite of passage,” American Pharoah joined legendary horses such as Man o’ War and Secretariat as champions that also lost at “The Spa.” After the Travers, speculation ensued that American Pharoah may retire sooner than expected and his owner, Ahmed Zayat, even mentioned feeling his gut was telling him to retire the champion. Upon leaving Saratoga, it was truly unclear if American Pharoah would ever race again or if he would continue his quest for the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

Trainer, Bob Baffert monitored his colt closely while looking for any indicator they should not proceed toward the Breeders’ Cup. However, American Pharoah began thriving once again and the team proceeded toward the Breeders’ Cup for the final race of the champions career. American Pharoah’s final gallops in preparation for the race would occur on the Keeneland training track, amidst the bluegrass and rolling hills of Lexington, Kentucky; American Pharoah seemed to relish the cooler temperatures of Kentucky and posted strong gallops leading up to the Classic. While he had newfound doubters after his Saratoga defeat, American Pharoah trained like a horse destined to win the Classic; American Pharoah exits the Keeneland training track in the warm glow of the sun on a autumn morning in Kentucky; The champion poses after a bath outside his Keeneland barn.

The Pharoah won by a smashing 6 1/2 lengths and posted a track record time of 2:00.07 for the 1 1/4 miles. The win also awarded American Pharoah a Beyer Speed Figure of 120, the highest of both his career and of any horse posted in 2015. It was a perfect ending to his already Hall of Fame career.

Steve Heuertz Bio It started with a horse named Cowboy. Disregarded and discounted, this nine-year-old Red Dun Quarter Horse left his life as a ranch horse in South Dakota and ventured a new path into the life of Steve Heuertz in 2004. Shortly thereafter, a bond was formed that fully catapulted Steve into the world of the horse where he became fascinated with the wonderful capabilities of this majestic animal. Of particular interest were the speed, endurance and competitive spirit demonstrated by the equine heroes within the sport of Thoroughbred Racing. Although initially satisfied with observing from afar, Steve became increasingly captivated by the sport and turned toward capturing the splendor of racing via his other passion, photography. The result was a recipe where he could combine his great love for horses, racing and photography into one harmonious blend that was greater than the sum of its parts. Since then, racing has taken Steve across the country to such wonderful places as Saratoga Race Course, Churchill Downs, Santa Anita Park, Pimlico Race Course, Belmont Park, Keeneland and Hooiser Park. During these travels, Steve has been fortunate to witness and photograph equally wonderful races such as the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes (racing’s famed Triple Crown) as well as the Travers Stakes, Santa Anita Derby, Indiana Derby, Stephen Foster Handicap and Breeders’ Cup, among

others. However, residing in the Chicago suburb of St. Charles, IL, Steve regularly frequents Arlington Park and Hawthorne Race Course where he has enjoyed capturing magnificent races like the Arlington Million and Hawthorne Gold Cup. Steve Heuertz; Today, Steve’s passion for Steve’s horse and horses, racing and photograloyal friend, Cowboy, phy is like a fire that contina 20-year-old, Red ues to be stoked. While either Dun Quarter Horse behind the lens capturing the thrill of a Grade 1 race or in the saddle loping around a field with Cowboy, Steve as learned to operate under the simple truth that the more he is able to involve the horse in his life, the happier his days become.

NAVICULAR SYNDROME PART 1 T Reprint from January 2013

by Dr. Steve Fisch, DVM

A Current Look at Navicular Syndrome Navicular syndrome is a broad term that is used to describe soreness or damage to the navicular bone and its surrounding structures in the equine foot. It has been labeled with a variety of titles including: navicular disease, palmar foot pain, navicular syndrome, and heel sore. No matter how you label it, damage to the navicular bone and its surrounding structures is a common cause of lameness that has great potential for a successful outcome with appropriate management. The equine foot is a complex unit with many moving parts, designed to provide support to the limb and properly disperse concussion from the ground. The heel of the horse is a vital component in the overall soundness of the animal. Damage to any one of the structures surrounding the navicular bone or to the navicular bone itself can cause lameness. These structures include: the navicular bone, navicular bursa, coffin bone, impar ligament, suspensory ligament of the navicular, deep

his month we are featuring the first of a two part series discussing navicular syndrome. Dr. Fisch first gives us a look at the many issues covered under this umbrella of navicular syndrome and the path to an accurate diagnosis. Next month he’ll cover treatment and management of this common issue.

digital flexor tendon, digital cushion, frog, and heel bulbs. If your horse is diagnosed with navicular syndrome, don’t fret. There are many treatment options and with the help of your veterinarian and farrier, the syndrome can be appropriately managed.

Page 32

Diagnosis The typical presentation for a horse with navicular syndrome is an intermittent lameness in the front limbs that progresses over time, but tends to improve with rest during the off season. In many cases, lameness will be most evident in preparation for show season when the horse is being worked at its hardest. You may only notice the occasional slight head bob, and then talk yourself out of a possible lameness due to its brevity. The horse will often have a short stabbing stride at the trot and may point a foot when standing, avoiding heel contact with the ground. Many horses will have the classic long toe and low heel that crushes the soft tissue structures in the back of the foot; while some others will have a tall heel and a snubbed toe from placing each step toe first. Navicular syndrome is most prevalent in Quarter Horses, Thoroughbreds, Paints, and Warmbloods with the average age being 7-14 years old.

of the navicular bone to determine if there are any degenerative changes seen (evidence of arthritis, navicular cysts, or proliferation of bone). Some horses will show little to no lameness, but have degenerative changes of the navicular bone. Conversely, some horses will be lame with no evidence of navicular changes on x-ray. This is where advanced imaging like Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) may come into play. MRI identifies soft tissue support structures around the navicular bone that can become injured which cannot be seen with x-rays. The downside to an MRI is the expense (typically$1500-$2500) and also a potential anesthetic risk. Most facilities that offer MRIs have to place horses under general anesthesia for this procedure. However, there are some facilities that have standing MRI units. Once your veterinarian has found a diagnosis with imaging, an appropriate treatment plan that is suitable for owner and patient can be developed. Next month Dr. Fisch will discuss management and treatment options for horses diagnosed with navicular issues.

Once suspicion of lameness arises by the owner, a workup should be performed by your veterinarian. Once suspicion of lameness arises by the owner, a workup should be performed by your veterinarian. This will involve watching the horse move, joint flexions, and hoof testing. Some navicular horses will be painful to hoof testers over the heel region when they are applied from frog to hoof wall and from quarter to quarter. Next, a palmar digital nerve block will likely be performed. This block will numb the back 1/3-2/3 of the foot. The navicular bone and its surrounding structures fall within this area. Once the block is effective, the horse will be examined again at the trot for an improvement in soundness. If substantial improvement is noted, the lameness has been located to this area of the foot and imaging can then be performed. Interpretation of imaging should be supported by findings from the lameness examination. In most cases, radiographs (x-rays) will be taken

All the photos in the calendar were activities captured on film by Joyce and Gwen Vhr from our 2015 season. We certainly “Thank” these cowgirls for all their time capturing the good, bad and funny happenings at the shoots.

Treat each new day like a freshly worked arena: free of footprints from yesterday's ride. Hey everybody: No snow for my hometown so far...hope I don’t jinx myself. I’m back riding since I hurt my leg. One good thing is I got to watch the BFA and NFR so it wasn’t so boring sitting at home with my leg elevated. This month I interviewed “A really cool kid” who just became a teenager... Happy Birthday,

Your favorite show and why: The Chalee Gilliland Memorial Show. Chalee Gilliland was an 11 year old barrel racer who had Cystic Fibrosis and her family and friends host a barrel race in her memory. All proceeds benefit a Hoosier with CF that presents a medical need. They honor their barrel racing daughter by helping fellow hoosiers. They also help kids get to NBHA world if they need financial assistance. The Chalee Gilliland Foundation is an all around great organization and being a part of the show gives us a chance to help in her name! Goals: To win the 1D Open World and to win the All-American! Advice to fellow barrel racers: Never give up, practice & train hard and ride! Other info: My Pappaw was always a horse trainer, my uncles all rode barrels and flags and ran the race track. But I got a late start to riding (when my mom went to Vegas with my big sister and Pappaw put me on a horse) but everyone says I am a natural. So Pappaw started training me. I hope to catch up to all my peers (like Clint) soon with a lot of practice and training. Keep warm and hang on tight;

Movie: Who has time for movies when there’s horses to ride! Horse: Quarter Horse

Clint Clint is a graduate of East Central High School. His parents are Terrie VanVolkenburgh and respectively Joe Trentman. He has grown up in the horse world, both parents have rode almost all their life...Clint's grandfather as some of you may remember was the late Terry VanVolkenburgh, who would run up and down the fences when his daughters would run barrels. Clint began barrel racing at the age of 4 with a pony, then went on to particpate in Jr. Rodeo and his favorite event was the sheep riding, hard to believe he is now a barrel racer. He has won the Ohio Youth NBHA and Indiana Youth and Open NBHA , he has also won the Congress youth barrel four times, and was runner up in the Congress Sweepstakes. He placed at Josey Jr. world numerous times, and won the NBHA Youth World 1D in 2006. He loves to barrel race and is now trying his hand at the futurities. In Clint's spare time he mows grass for a part time job and is also very active in his church where he and his cousins are bible school helpers. Clint also volunteers one day a week at a school in Cincinatti where he spends time tutoring other kids in reading.

CHRISTIAN COWBOY COLLECTION

By Christa Conway

Push Through! As a barrel racer, those words may mean something different to me than someone who has never ridden a horse. I get an instant picture of an electric eye and an invisible line that I need to be sure my horse crosses at full speed. Those last few strides before the timing line can mean the difference between 1st place and no check. The same goes with race horses and crossing the finish line. As owners, breeders, trainers or just fans - we want to see that horse give one last “push through” at the finish! That’s when you hear the crowd going wild and yelling the loudest - at the finish line! If you’ve ever been to a barrel race or a horse race and you take time to study the horses and their riders, you may notice that many of them “quit” before the race is over (horses and riders both.) Sometimes you’ll see a horse flip their tail or a rider relax and stop “pushing” just a little before the wire.

INSPIRATION

I’ve seen it many times as a spectator. I’d comment about someone making a super nice run and think I was watching a winning run right up until the last three or four strides before the finish line. I’d think to myself , “Why did they quit pushing too soon? Don’t they know they weren’t though the timer?” I make a point to find the timing line when I get to a barrel race. I want to have a game plan to make every effort to use the placement of the line to my benefit. I will adjust my starting and stopping path according to where the timer is placed. I want to be sure that my horse is running as they cross the line, so I need to know the placement of that line to help push them through..

up and all I need to do is focus on listening to him for my cues to perform. If I keep pushing through until the race is done, the battle is won, the prayer is answered - then I have run a good race.

Here’s the kicker (pun intended)....my horse does not know where the timing line is. That’s not his job. His job is to listen to my cues and trust that I will let him know when he’s done.

What usually happens to me (I don’t know about you) is that I get most of the way through a race (trying time, battle, etc) and I get worried. Like a horse that may be running into a closed chute - they wonder where they are supposed to go....where is the gate....I need to stop.....I should turn here...etc - I forget to trust the one in control of it all. I forget to trust the one that was there when they set up the arena, placed the gates and put the stakes in the ground. I forget that HE knows where the finish line is and I just need to trust that he wants me to finish STRONG - pushing through to the end.

Now most horses are smart and will start “cheating” the line if they are allowed to do so. You may have seen them barely cross the timer before turning a circle. They are quitting too soon...giving up and cheating themselves and their rider out of a full performance. We all know that tenths and hundredths of a second sometimes mean the difference between a nice dinner on the way home or a drive thru. I started thinking about this in my life - me being the horse and not knowing where the finish line is, so to speak. I have to trust that whatever circumstance (arena) I am facing, that God has taken the time to scope out the set

Page 42

2 Timothy 2:7 I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:

I love watching those horses that run honest - those that push through the timing line with confidence - those that are running to win. I want to be like those horses.

I have a desire to push through. Why do I find it so hard when I know I can trust God in my circumstance? The finish lines that the horses face sometimes have fans cheering loudly and some horses get distracted by the noise and commotion. Maybe this happens to us... the distractions aren’t cheering fans - but “what ifs” thrown at us by the devil. “What if I fail, what if I fall, what if it doesn’t work, what if people laugh at me, what if I make someone mad...etc, etc, etc. The only thing that should matter to me and to you as well as to those horses is whether or not when we are finished we hear these words: “Well done, my good and faithful servant.” Matthew 25:23 His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. Push through!!!

On the Trail

By Brother Brad Curtis of Mountain Top Cowboy Church

HAPPY TRAIL Pulled up on the reins There in a draw Blew on my hands Hoping they’d thaw

He said, workin` for your dad That must get old Then with a laugh Said my place sure ain’t cold

So you see pard I’m in a bad way Deny your daddy Help me today

You see my father Well.. he adopted me And on his happy trail I’ll ride for eternity

Cowboying in winter Will test your might That’s when he rode up His horse, black as night

Come on pard I need a hand like you Could tell right away You’d know what to do

I said we’re not related I’m not your friend or pard Your herd is demons And will end up chard

By: Bro. Bard Curtis Vilonia, AR 10/13/10

He said hey there pard I’m looking for hands My spreads the warmest In all the lands

My cows…well they’re all sick I worm them critters everyday But for some reason The worms won’t go away

On your unhappy trail I use to ride But one day Discovered you had lied

Said no thanks This is the family spread I love it here His eyes turned blood red

Their teeth are ground down But I don’t know why Now they’re tough ol` cows None of them ever die

So look here devil Dad and I are doing quite well Get behind me And ride back to hell

Luke 4:8 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

One Last (& most important) thought… Salvation is a gift and a choice......

But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. Romans 5:15 For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Romans 10: 9-10

INSPIRATION

Read past issues of our Christian Cowboy Collection and the Christian Barrel Racer’s Newsletter at the website below!

Jesus died on the cross as the final sacrifice for our sins. He was resurrected on the 3rd day and he defeated death and Satan for us. All we have to do is believe that He beat death, acknowledge it with our words and accept Him as our personal savior. That’s when the rebirth happens and we are changed! He then promises us eternal life with Him in Heaven! You can’t earn your way into Heaven; you have to accept His gift of salvation. So many people think they “aren’t good enough” to get to Heaven… But… Salvation is a GIFT from God and you don’t earn a gift. Gifts are given to you and for the gift to be yours, you have to accept it. All we have to do is accept this wonderful gift. I know I have…won’t you?

Me: Well, I think I pulled or strained the muscle just above my shoulder blade. Doctor: And, how did you do it? Me: I went for the big cymbal smash at the end of a song, overreached and felt the pull. I’ve been hurting ever since. Doctor: Hmmmm, I didn’t know you played drums in a band. Me: Oh, no, I don’t. I was just playing air guitar and drums to the Boston song, “Peace Of Mind”, while driving on my road trip yesterday. He laughed so hard he didn’t even charge me. Yes, I really did strain a muscle in the midst of the big finish. Yes, I was driving. Yes, I only play “air” instruments. Yes, it means I’m old. Its official, I’m old! In my own defense, I hadn’t “jammed” in a long time. Last night, another commercial told me what I needed to find happiness. I thought back to my drive home from Cincinnati, more than a year ago. Camera in hand, I had found people, who lived in the dark alleys, on park benches and hidden on stairways, which seemed to go nowhere. The pictures still haunt me. The power of the images pierced my heart, mind and soul. I captured a snapshot without knowing the story and the mystery will not let me go. What had led them to this day, this moment?

Why so little?

The answer is simple. I have so little to worry about when it comes to where I will lay my head tonight – my pillow is soft and my bed is warm and toasty. I have so little concern about filling my belly – my refrigerator is full. I have so little to battle in the depths of my mind – my demons have been put at bay. I am blessed. A pulled muscle celebrating life with a little help from Tom Scholz, Brad Delp and the boys from my favorite all-time band, Boston, was nothing. It is the only pain I really face and it was so, so, so, so little. Last year, last night, many endured the cold. Their bed was hard concrete. Their living room was the unforgiving metal of a park bench. Their kitchen was the trash left by others. Their home was an alley. “Dear God: I don’t need much when I have little. My little is so much more than others.”

What Is Happening? I realize in the past I have commented on how the cats are funny because they take “cat selfies” or the cats are not so bad to have around because they make life for Miss Maybelline a challenge on occasion. Heck, I even started answering to “Here, kitty. kitty” when I had the itchy skin, remember?

The kids that live here were getting ready for school when the lady noticed something in the window. Whatever it was, it was hanging off of the screen and it was apparent to me that it wanted inside where it was much warmer than outside.

What I never, ever, ever expected was to have a cat as a roommate. I mean, ever since I’ve lived here this house has been a “Cat Free Zone” on the inside. Kitties in the barn, kitties in the yard and occasionally a sneaky kitty in the garage - but NEVER a kitty in the house.

Of course, the lady felt bad and went to see what kind of critter was hanging around (ha ha!) outside. It was a kitty. The kitty had a collar so it must be lost, right?

This trend ended last month. It all started with a couple of foster kitties who needed a new home. The lady that lives here let the little girl that lives here talk her into “fostering” a couple of supposed “munchkin cats.” I’m not sure what that means, maybe “munchkin” translates to “annoying.” No matter, they didn’t stay too long. The lady found them homes within a couple of days and I said “good riddance.” Little did I know that the flood gates had been opened on the kitty cat river.

No. Sometimes people are creeps. Someone had dumped this cat (who was obviously a house cat) out in the country to fend for itself in the middle of winter. (Somewhat reminiscent of Duke’s story.) I guess the kitty was lucky they decided on a road near my house. (Me not so much,) The lady tried to get the kitty to live in the barn with the other cats. She fed him and even tried to get him to stay in the barn’s office where it was warmer. Nothing worked. To be honest, I think the other cats were mean to the new cat. No matter, he wasn’t having any of the barn life and kept ending up hanging from a screen on a window of the house.

Flashback with Bella

This past week has been another tough one for yours truly. At first I thought it was the dry summer that we’ve been having, but then I began to wonder.

It all started about a week ago....the itching and the red skin. All I could think about is..... scratch, scratch, scratch...dig, dig dig and then scratch some more. Obsessed was a good word. I’ve heard that a lot since this all started. But believe me, I couldn’t figure out was was going on and my people were definitely noticing that something needed done. I know I was beginning to drive my people crazy with the constant “cat scratching.” (They call it that when I rub my back on the bottom of one of their boots...usually when they have a leg crossed and their boot is at the perfect level for me to get in a good back scratch. They say I look like a cat when I do that, hence the name “cat scratching”......I don’t care what they call it, but it feels soooo good!)

A few days ago the little girl picked him up and found that he was getting skinny so she pleaded with the lady to let him come inside until they could find him a home. You see where this is going, right? He found a home. Mine. Now my days are full of cat attacks and crazy jumping at plants and whatever else might strike it’s fancy. Not to mention I have to share my tv time with the new addition. Of course, the gave it a name. Conway Kitty, how original. Later,

I Think I Am Allergic To.....

Excerpt from Barks N Bits, 2010

This itchy feeling, however, was not easily relieved with your typical “cat scratching.” It quickly became a constant irritation for me. All day, everyday ...itching...scratching ...itching...scratching ...itching... scratching. I found myself rubbing along the underside of the truck, the car, the horse trailer.....they are all the perfect height for me to scratch my back, scratch my back (there’s that obsession again.) The downfall with the “under the vehicle back scratching” is the black greasy stripe that goes along with the short term relief. The black greasy stripe led to a couple of baths and a couple of “Oh, Bella! You’re filthy!” remarks from the people. I do have to say that my people were on top of the itching issue. It didn’t take them long to start the bathing and ointment treatments. And of course the “Here, Bella, want a treat?” trick. The trick being there is a nasty tasting doggy pill from the vet mixed inside of a piece of bologna. Of course, I can’t resist a piece of bologna.... even if it is supposed to be good” for me.

As of today, I am scheduled to visit my vet for a follow up to see how I am coming along. Although my people are still not sure if it is allergies or something else, I honestly think it is stress related. Stress brought on by one whole year of exposure to a little “black bark box” named Annabelle - AKA -“Annie” around these parts I’m calling this condition “Stress related “ANNERGIES.” I’m gonna squeeze in a nap..... until next month....
