LETTER FROM THE EDITOR A Letter from the Editor

I

am so excited to say that Spring is FINALLY here. Well, at least by the calendar. It looks like late March will be colder than normal - but SPRING IS FINALLY here!! It can’t stay cold forever, right? I am taking a trip south for Spring Break and hope that when I come back home the warm weather comes right along with me. I don’t know about you, but I am ready for some sunshine and heat. I hope I don’t hear anyone complain about the heat this summer - I may lose my cool...(pun intended!) This month is our Annual Showbill/Event Edition. We hope you keep it with you this summer as you are looking for a horse show to attend. And remember, you can always find links to the showbills on our website at www.thehorseresource.net - just click on the Calendar page. We will be attending the Hoosier Horse Fair again this year - a smaller booth this time - still in the West pavilion and we will be sharing a booth with the QHRAI again this year. Stop in and see us! We will be giving away goodies and we love to hear from you! If you haven’t already, please go and “Like” us on our facebook page...we’ll be posting some things on there that you won’t want to miss!

Follow Us

Until next month.........think warm thoughts......... .........and remember to count your blessings on horseback! God Bless and Ride Safe, Christa Conway

My horse love nibbling on something whenever he’s in the trailer. It keeps him from get-

ting too nervous and lets him concentrate on something instead of being stuck in a trailer. speedjunkie Elite Veteran Posts: 1182 Location: Great NW Always feed hay in the trailer. gives them something to do and help keep their belly’s happy. I tie up a slow feeder net even in the trailer with mangers cause they always seem to push the hay out of the mangers. I do not want them with their head on the floor if I need to stomp on the brakes for some reason. ana Posts: 13578 Location: Utah We do.

March 11, 2014 - The American Quarter Horse Association Executive Committee was elected at the 2014 AQHA Convention in New Orleans. This five-person committee is responsible for implementing important decisions made by AQHA members through the Association’s board of directors.

Dr. Blodgett received his bachelor’s degree in animal science from Oklahoma State University and earned his degree in veterinary medicine from Texas A&M University, and has since been recognized as an outstanding alumnus by both universities.

The 2014-15 AQHA Executive Committee was elected at the AQHA Convention in New Orleans.

President Johnny Trotter Johnny Trotter of Hereford, Texas, has served as an AQHA director for 11 years. He has also served on the racing, nominations and credentials, and stud book and registration committees, as well as the foundation, ranching and racing councils. Trotter is the CEO of Livestock Investors LLT and owns Bar G Feedyard, and serves as president of the Texas Auto Investors DBA Whiteface Ford in Hereford. His involvement in the American Quarter Horse industry is focused on racing, roping and horses used for ranch work and breeding. He is an avid team roper and participates in numerous ropings, including the World Series of Team Roping, having made the finals for this event the previous two years. Trotter is very involved in his local community. He has served on the West Texas A&M University Foundation and has been a part of the West Texas A&M University Alumni Association Silver Phoenix group. He also served on the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the Deaf Smith County Chamber of Commerce and the Kings Manor Methodist Retirement Home boards. He presently serves as the chairman of the executive committee of the Spicer Gripp Memorial Youth Foundation, a board member of First Financial Bank in Hereford and First United Bank in Lubbock, Texas, and an executive committee member at First Financial Bankshares Inc. in Abilene, Texas. Trotter is a former member of the Texas Cattle Feeders board of directors and was the 2006 recipient of the Tri-State Fair Western Heritage Award. Johnny and his wife, Jana, have one son, Eddie. First Vice President George Phillips George Phillips of Sumrall, Mississippi, is a longtime breeder of Quarter Horses and past president of the Mississippi Quarter Horse Association. He has been an AQHA member for more than 30 years, has served as an AQHA director since 2002 and served on the public policy and membership services committees, and foundation, ranching, show and marketing and membership councils. Phillips is also a member of AQHA’s “QContacts” group, which fosters relationships with members of Congress. Phillips received his bachelor’s degree in philosophy from the University of Southern Mississippi and his law degree from the University of Mississippi. In 1980, he was named the U.S. attorney for the southern district of Mississippi. He also served as special counsel to Mississippi Sen. Thad Cochran (R) for six years, and he was director of the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics before being named the state’s commissioner of public safety in 2005. In 2008, Phillips was appointed the Mississippi state director for USDA rural development.

In 1982, Dr. Blodgett became the resident veterinarian and manager of the horse division at the Four Sixes Ranch. In his tenure at the Four Sixes, which is located near Guthrie, Texas, the ranch has become an all-time leading breeder of both racing and performance American Quarter Horses, and in 1993, won the AQHA Best Remuda Award. In addition to its cattle, the horse operation raises racing, performance and ranch horses. Dr. Blodgett is the recipient of the 2011 AQHA Racing Council Special Recognition Award. He and his wife, Karen, have two daughters: Buffie Guynes, who lives with husband Michael and daughters Catherine, Rebecca and Clair in Keller, Texas; and Brandie Mustian, who lives with husband Mike, son Maddox and daughter Myla in Weatherford, Texas. Seekins began his association with American Quarter Horses in 1995 when his daughters convinced him and his wife, Connie, that they really needed horses. His early years with horses included ranch work and sprint racing. The first two horses for the Seekins family were home-trained and went on to earn AQHA open championships, AQHYA championships, AQHYA Supreme Champion titles and one youth versatility award.

Now retired, George and wife Nicole have three children: Garrison, Margaret and Mary.

News American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame Inductees The 2014 Hall of Fame Inductees were honored at this year’s AQHA Convention in New Orleans. The 2014 American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame inductees were honored at the Hall of Fame Banquet on March 9 at the 2014 American Quarter Horse Association Convention in New Orleans. “We are pleased to honor the 2014 American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame inductees,” said Don Treadway Jr., AQHA executive vice president. “These men and these horses have served the Association in different ways on their way to making history.” The men joining the Hall of Fame are Leroy Webb of Tucumcari, New Mexico; Ken Mumy of Metamora, Michigan; the late A.B. Green of Purcell, Oklahoma; and Donald “Curly” Smith of Grass Valley, California. The horses are the 1955 stallion Mr Bar None; the 1961 mare Miss T Stuart; the 1979 mare Dashingly; the 1949 stallion Leo San; and the 1982 stallion Mr Conclusion. The Hall of Fame in Amarillo is the repository of the breed’s history. Inclusion in the Hall of Fame is the highest honor AQHA can bestow. “We congratulate these new members of the Hall of Fame and thank them for their work in improving our Association,” Treadway said. The Record-Setter Mr Bar None was foaled in 1955, sired by American Quarter Horse Hall of Famer Three Bars (TB) and out of the Moco Burnett mare Murl L. He was bred and owned by June and Zelma Jeffers of Wagoner, Oklahoma. When Mr Bar None hit the track in 1957, he set a track record, and he kept getting faster from there, becoming the champion racing 2-yearold colt for the year. In 1958, he was the high money-earner, champion stallion, champion 3-year-old and world champion racing Quarter Horse. In all, he earned $72,125 on the track, defeating such famed horses as Clabber’s Win, Go Man Go, Vandy’s Flash, Dividend, Clabber Bar, Double Bid and Vanetta Dee.

oughbred stallion Killoqua. During her race career, the sorrel mare was owned first by then-15-year-old Windi Phillips and later by J.E. Jumonville Jr. The mare was trained by American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame member Bubba Cascio. At the time of her death, she was owned by J. Baxter Brinkmann of Dallas. She was the 1981 AQHA racing champion 2-year-old filly. In 1982, she became a Superior racehorse, and in 1983 – her best year of racing – she was an AQHA Supreme racehorse, racing champion aged mare and world champion racing American Quarter Horse. The Sire of Sires Before there were American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame stallions Peppy San and Mr San Peppy, there was their sire, Leo San. The 1949 stallion by Leo and out of the San Siemon mare San Sue Darks was bred by H.H. Darks of Wetumka, Oklahoma. Leo was owned by Gorden B. Howell of El Paso, Texas, who bought the horse as an 8-year-old because he wanted a horse that traced to the Quarter Horse bloodlines he liked best. Howell’s broodmare band, including the dam of Peppy San and Mr San Peppy, Peppy Belle, were all chosen to complement Leo San. In turn, Leo San sired foals that earned 3,168 points in AQHA competition. His foals won in the show ring, on the racetrack and in the cutting pen, and were shown in every AQHA event. He died in 1968, but more than 30 years later, Leo San was still among the top 10 paternal sires of AQHA horses. The Sire of Champions Within a year of his arrival on earth, Mr Conclusion started making his mark in the halter pen. The 1982 sorrel stallion won the yearling class at the 1983 All American Quarter Horse Congress. In 1984, he was reserve world champion 2-year-old stallion. In 1986, Mr Conclusion was the world champion aged stallion, the same year that the first of his progeny earned a world championship. Mr Conclusion was by Conclusive and out of Miss Amber Charge by Otoe Charge. He was bred by Mark Toteff and James Evans of Stockbridge, Michigan. During his show career, Mr Conclusion was owned by Edgewood Farms Inc. of Pilot Point, Texas. At the time of his death in 1998, the stallion was owned by Roger Perry of Lexington, Kentucky.

After his racing career finished, Mr Bar None retired to the breeding shed, where his get earned $1.157 million. Three of them were champions: Bar None Doll, Mr Juniper Bar and Bayou Bar.

His foals in total earned 47 open, 45 amateur and 30 youth world championships, as well as 88 reserve world championships. Along the way, they collected 48,763.5 points in all divisions of AQHA competition.

The Broodmare In 1961, a dun mare was foaled on the Stuart Ranch in Waurika, Oklahoma, where she would live her entire life. Her foals and their foals, though, would go on to win world championships, points and fame in all the different disciplines that American Quarter Horses are known for.

The Cowboy American Quarter Horse breeder Leroy Webb grew up in the cow camps of New Mexico and West Texas before becoming a cowboy himself.

Miss T Stuart was bred and owned by R.T. “Bob” Stuart Jr. She was by Breezy Buck and out of Pretty Sally by Big Shot Dun. Miss T Stuart’s 20 foals earned 801 points. After retirement from the show ring, her daughters produced athletic horses that could succeed in the show ring as well as on the AQHA Best Remuda Award-winning ranch. They produced the earners of world championships, reserve world championships and the 1995 AQHA Superhorse, Genuine Redbud. The Millionaire The 1979 mare Dashingly won $1.754 million on the track during her Quarter Horse racing career, one of the richest mares in AQHA history and one of the few racing millionaires who earned that much money without winning the All American Futurity. Dashingly was bred by Muriel Hyland of Lake Hughes, California, and was by Dash For Cash and out of the mare Dee Mount by the Thor-

Webb worked for Hall of Fame member Hank Wiescamp for 10 years, showing Wiescamp’s horses at AQHA shows and taking them to a higher level. He later became a horse trainer on his own and made many AQHA high-point horses and world champions. He has been a mentor to many top trainers. A book by Davis L. Ford, “The Last Cowboy,” documents Webb’s life. The Race Secretary Donald “Curly” Smith loved American Quarter Horse racing. Starting as a jockey’s agent, he later became a saddling paddock judge before going to work in the racing office, eventually becoming the racing secretary at Los Alamitos Race Course and later the director of racing for the track. He served on the AQHA Racing Council and racing committee, and is remembered by the racing industry as being strict but fair and playing a critical role in promoting and regulating American Quarter Horse racing. “I have frequently, when faced with a difficult situation, asked myself,

KyQHA Launches $25,000 Guaranteed Premium Series for 2014 March 6, 2014- -(Lexington) - The Kentucky Quarter Horse Association (KyQHA) has announced an exciting new opportunity for exhibitors of horses enrolled in KyQHA’s Breeders’ Incentive Fund (BIF) to earn additional money. The new program, called the “KyQHA BIF Premium Series,” will pay a total of $25,000 to nominated BIF horses that compete successfully in one or more of four weekend AQHA events sponsored by the KyQHA during 2014. Qualifying events, all of which are at the Casey County Ag Expo Center in Liberty, Kentucky, include the “Bluegrass Bonanza,” May 16-18; the “Summer Spectacular,” June 13-15; the “Last Chance Rally,” July 25-27; and “The Kentucky Futurities,” over the Labor Day weekend, August 30 to September 1. These four official AQHA event weekends, with 4 shows per weekend, offer exhibitors the chance to show to a maximum of 16 AQHA judges for the BIF Premium Series. Chuck Givens, Series Coordinator, says there is no secret about why a new BIF Premium Series is being launched this year by the Association:

‘What would Curly Smith do?’ ” said Scott Wells, president and general manager of Remington Park Racetrack in Oklahoma City. “In most cases, that process has led me to good decision-making based on fairness and all available facts.” The Racer From his Green Pastures Ranch in Purcell, Oklahoma, oilman A.B. Green raised and raced some of the most famous horses of their day, with four of them inducted into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame: Miss Meyers, Barbara L, Miss Olene and Go Man Go. Green was the owner and breeder of the first AQHA Supreme Champion, Kid Meyers, a son of Miss Meyers. After Green’s death in 1969, his son, Bruce, continued raising and running his horses in his name. Green and Kid Meyers have been inducted into the Ruidoso Hall of Fame where Kid Meyers’ son, Mr Kid Charge, won the All American and Rainbow futurities in 1971 and made Green the 1971 leading AQHA racing breeder by money earned. The Past President Ken Mumy of Metamora, Michigan, was elected to the AQHA Executive Committee in 2004 and served as president in 2008-2009. The lifelong horseman and American Quarter Horse exhibitor began his service to AQHA long before that, when he joined the AQHA Membership Services Committee in 1993. He became a member of the board of directors in 1996. During his term on the Executive Committee, Mumy worked to maintain AQHA’s formal ties with state, regional and international affiliates. “We have always sought to reward the owners of KyQHA BIF horses, regardless of where they competed, but our specific goal here is to offer exhibitors an additional reason to participate in our Kentucky events. We believe our 2014 summer shows schedule is our best ever, and, of course, every event will feature our popular $150 All-Inclusive Entry Package. KyQHA has developed this new program to encourage more exhibitors and entries here in Kentucky.” Payouts for the new BIF Premium Series will be based on the ‘KyQHA show points’ as used for year-end awards, not AQHA points. All such points earned by eligible horses to a cap of 500 - each of which will earn a premium - will be used to calculate rewards after the show season. The Series is strictly limited to verified KyQHA BIF horses which are nominated for a single fee of $100. Participants must enroll in the KyQHA Year-End Awards Program which has no nomination fee, thus is a bonus program for all BIF Premium Series participants. Nominations can be made any time, but eligible points will accumulate only after the date of nomination. For all program details, click on the KyQHA BIF Premium Series. When Disaster Strikes, Plan to be Prepared Article and Photos by: Barbara Sheridan

The next step is to plan for any possible extended disruption of services. Authorities usually recommend having at least two weeks supply of feed/hay on hand, and kept stored in a dry area. Top off all water tanks and buckets before an impending storm, and store additional water in plastic trash cans secured with lids in a safe place. Consider having well-maintained generators on hand to provide emergency power, and have enough fuel to keep them running for several days. Always keep an up-to-date emergency care kit that includes vetwrap, bandages, medications, flashlights, batteries, etc. Having an envelope set aside with emergency cash, the amount depending on your budget and needs will also come in handy for times such as these. In addition to Mother Nature’s list of natural disasters, you should also consider other potential dangers such as wildfires or the possibility of manmade emergencies including gas leaks or propane spills. Many times, these result in evacuation with very little notice. In the case of an evacuation, while you might be able to take the family pet along with you to a hotel, it’s not the time to start calling around to find a safe location to move your horses. Prearrange an evacuation site for your horses and map out primary and secondary routes in advance. Develop a buddy system with friends and neighbouring barns. Don’t hesitate to ask for help when the time comes. Also, make sure your horses are trained to easily load and unload from a trailer. If evacuation is not possible, decide where on the property to safely store your horses. Micro chipping, branding, or tattooing, along with registration with online identification agencies, provides a permanent form of animal identification. As an alternative, ensure that your horses are equipped with some form of identification such as a halter tag, neck collar, or leg tag that contains your contact information, should you have to leave them behind.

Do not expect horses to acquire adequate water intake by eating snow. Prepare ahead of time for a possible water shortage due to a power outage or frozen pipes.

I

ce storms, blizzards, floods, or tornadoes - it seems that over the past few years, we’ve seen them all. Disasters often strike without warning as demonstrated recently by the notable December ice storm that wreaked havoc on hundreds of thousands residents in Ontario, the Maritimes, and the northeastern U.S. with downed tree limbs and power lines. Many were without power for days, while for others it was weeks, which meant no heat, hydro or water. No one is immune from the possible effects of a disaster, no matter what the season, but preparing ahead of time and having an emergency plan in place before disaster strikes will help to keep our horses safe and out of harm’s way. Plan it Out Being aware of the possible risks in your region is the first step toward preparing for any possible disaster that has the potential to cause a short term or long term disruption to you, your family and your animals. Is your area prone to flooding? What about tornadoes or blizzards? If the roads are closed, how do you get food to your horses?

Page 20

Human Safety Comes First In the case of a natural or man-made disaster, it’s important that the safety of humans come first, says District Chief Victor MacPherson of the Adjala-Tosorontio Fire Department. “Make sure that you and your family are safe before assisting your animals,” he says. “In the case of a fire, this is where emergency preparedness comes into play. If the barn is on fire, what do you do? What do you do with your livestock? My advice is, if it’s safe to do so, try to get them out. However, if you bring them out of the barn and just turn them loose, most likely the horses will try to run back into the barn. That’s where their haven is; what they consider to be their safe place. People should have a location in mind ahead of time to safely keep them together, such as a field or another barn far away from the fire.” MacPherson recalls an incident with a large grass fire that claimed nearly 200 acres in the Adjala-Tosorontio area in July 2012. “The grass fire was moving aggressively towards a certain farm area, and was a heavy fuel load [had a lot to burn], with a lot of smoke,” he says. “Smoke can be just as dangerous as fire because it’ll spook the horses. With the help of the property owner, we were successful in moving them out to a safer place.” As is often the case in an emergency when people call 911, firefighters are usually the first responders to the scene. Because of this, many firefighters are now receiving training in how to handle animals in emergency situations.

Ensure that your horses are thoroughly trained to load onto a trailer so that they can be evacuated easily in case of an emergency.

Last year, the Adjala-Tosorontio Fire Department held a Technical Large Animal Emergency Rescue (TLAER) course for first responders and animals owners. Deborah Chute, owner and operator of Laurenwood Stables and a volunteer firefighter with the Adjala-Tosorontio Fire Department, helped co-ordinate this course after seeing the need for such a training program. “I first started thinking about the need for a course such as this one after the grass fire in June 2012,” she says. “It was necessary to evacuate people, but there were over 50 horses that were also at risk, as well as other large animals and livestock. Thankfully, the fire was brought under control, but contemplating the logistics of moving that many animals made me realize we needed some additional training.” Preparedness is Essential While it’s impossible to prepare for all conditions, don’t let an emergency situation catch you off guard. Having a basic plan in place ahead of time for either the evacuation or sheltering of your horses allows you to handle an emergency with less stress and a clearer head. “Pre-incident planning is crucial for any farm owner,” says Chute. “Farms by their very nature contain many hazards to humans, animals and the environment, and careful planning before the event of an emer-

Emily and her horse Casper won the 4D title besting many riders, some of whom have been barrel racing 20 times as long as her. Emily attributes much of her success to her trainer, Vicki Siesky. She also recognizes her horse saying “Casper’s personality and the way he takes care of me is what makes him special to me.” We happen to think that this young rider may just have a knack for picking good horses. “The first time I rode Casper, I knew we were a perfect match and would make a great team.” We asked Emily what she would be doing with her prizes money she said “I plan on saving the money I won on Casper for when he needs it.” With that kind of successful intuition and foresight there is no doubt Emily will go far in this sport. Congratulations to Emily and Casper on their win and best wishes looking forward! ~ Shane

The Top 10 Teams to come back on Sunday will be determined on a point system based on the $10,000 Guaranteed results. 1st place in each division will receive 20 points, 2nd place 19, 3rd place 18 and so on down to 20th place which will receive 1 point. Your 5 team members points will be added together and the top 10 teams with the highest amount of points will advance to the finals. Ex: If you have one team member win a division and the other 4 hit barrels or fall below the top 20 mark in any division then you would have 20 total points for your team. Payback: 100% of the entry fees plus $2,000 added. 75% of the total purse will be split between the winning team. The remaining 25% will be paid out to the 3 fastest times of the finals paid 50%, 30%, 20%. Example: If there are 40 teams X 100 EF= $4,000 + $2,000 added = $6,000 purse. 75% is $4,500 split between winning team ($900 each) 25% is $1,500 paid to 3 fastest times. $750 to the fastest, $450 to second, $300 to third.

Thorns or Sun

W

hat do you see? Is it the thorns? Is it the sun?

Our focus on the immediate sees the thorns. The thorns represent what we don’t like, what we face, what is difficult. Our circumstances or condition pricks our hearts. We feel pain. We may even bleed. We may not see a way around the thorns. We suffer the paralysis of fear. We wonder if we’ll ever get past the present. A change of focus lets us see the sun. We see beyond now. It’s not a view too deep into the future. It’s just a perspective without the thorns in the way. I’m not talking of some eternal hope. Thinking of heaven is a nice thought, but can move our heads from reality to the clouds. Looking way off into the distance means we are not living today. We’re just dreaming our way through life.

If my soul is content, I see the whole picture. I find balance. I see the present and the future. I see the difficulty and the possibilities. I appreciate the beauty of the thorns and the sun. Neither is the point! Both are the whole picture! Life includes thorns and sun. No denying it. Sometimes, the thorns of today are unavoidable and the focus. Always, the hope of tomorrow is there! When we embrace and appreciate the thorns and the sun, life is real. It is a perfect blend. It is a full flavored wine to be savored. We taste the fruit and the bite. Life is intoxicating only because of both – the thorns and the sun. What will you see today?

Care of the New Born Foal

*Reprinted from our April 2011 issue

Article By Dr. Steve Fisch, DVM Pictures provided by AVS Equine Hospital Not having a knowledgeable and experienced person with the mare when she foals is like driving ninety nine yards for the touchdown and deciding to stop on the one yard line. It just doesn’t make sense. There is a tremendous amount of expense that has already gone into getting a healthy foal on the ground. Depending on how many foals you raise each year, if you lose one foal because no one was there to help with any problems, then you have lost any amount of money you may have saved by not having the mare monitored during foaling. You have especially come out behind if you consider possible lost earnings of the foal and possible record enhancement to the mare, stallion and your breeding program. It is also much less expensive to prevent a problem than it is to treat one.

L

ast year you bought that special mare and bred her to that special stallion and after almost a year of waiting and making sure the mare had every nutritional and environmental advantage available to her, the time for the foal’s birth is here. You made sure the mare got all her pre-foaling vaccinations four to six weeks before her due date and you have made all the correct decisions in this process so far. Now you have to decide whether or not to let the mare take care of the birthing process on her own or do you make sure someone is with her when she foals?

One of the relatively common problems that can develop in new born foals and especially those that have unmonitored births is the “dummy foal” syndrome. This syndrome can be caused by a short period of time during the birthing process that the foal does not receive enough oxygen. The lack of oxygen causes the mental abilities of the foal to be diminished for up to a few days. The lack of oxygen could be caused by blocked airways as the foal comes out of the birth canal. An experienced person monitoring the birth can make sure the airways are open. They can also have equipment on hand to assist the foal with breathing if assistance is needed.

Top: Mare with her newborn foal Right: Foal with low maternal antibody level being given hyper immune plasma by Dr. Steve Fisch.

Page 30

An oxygen tank with the ability to supply oxygen directly to the foal’s nostrils can save many foals from developing “dummy foal” syndrome. Many times just a small amount of effort will be the difference in having a live healthy foal, a sick foal with veterinary bills attached or in the worst case scenario, a dead foal. Once the foal is born, the next goal is to get him up within two hours and nursing within three hours. It is important for the foal to nurse well within three hours because the gut starts “closing” within four hours of birth and is totally closed within twenty four hours of birth. This means that the GI system is unable to absorb large molecules once it has closed. Antibodies are large molecules so if the foal does not absorb enough maternal antibody within the first four to twelve hours the chances are it will be deficient in antibodies that are needed to prevent disease. Even if the foal is given colostrum twenty four hours after birth, the body cannot absorb it. A normal foal will nurse at least hourly and should be able

to ensure a healthy foal is dipping the foal’s navel in 25 per cent chlorhexidene solution. This should be done every few hours until the umbilical stump is dry. The umbilical stump is an excellent place for bacteria to enter the body and keeping in covered with dilute chlorhexidene helps kill any bacteria that may attempt to enter the body at this point. The foal should have a veterinary examination at twenty four hours of age to detect any abnormalities with such as angular limb deformaties, entropion or joint ill. If treated and diagnosed early these conditions can many times be treated successfully and sometimes they can be treated very inexpensively.

Above: Weak foal being tubed with milk by Dr. Tami Voorhees to readily find the teat. If the foal is bumping the mammary glands but not really sucking vigorously, then this is a sign that the foal is getting weak for some reason. If this happens, now is the time to get veterinary care. Waiting a few hours can mean the difference between saving and loosing the foal. Sometimes all the foal needs is to get tubed with three to five hundred mls of colostrum or milk to give it a boost of energy and fluids. Once the foal gets strong enough to nurse from the energy of the tubed fluids it can start the cycle of nursing and keeping itself strong. If however the foal does not respond to the tubed milk then an intravenous catheter should be placed and the foal should be given IV fluids. Keeping the foal well hydrated is critical.

Ask The Vet

It cannot be emphasized enough that the newborn foal should be monitored closely for the first few weeks. There are many times that a foal can seem happy and healthy in the morning and be severely sick in the evening. A sick foal is not a “wait and see” matter. A sick foal is always a cause for timely, accurate and aggressive veterinary attention. Many times that’s all it takes to insure the foal that you took so much care, time and expense to get here has a chance to become the winner you knew it could be.

When the foal is twelve to twenty four hours old it should have a blood sample pulled to check for maternal antibody level. If the value is less than 800mg/dl of IgG then the foal should be given at least one liter of equine plasma from hyperimmunized donors. If the foal is showing any sign of a problem such as weakness, diarrhea, constipation or any sign of dismaturity Stephen D. Fisch, DVM or prematurity then the foal should AVS Equine Hospital located at also have a complete blood count 9085 Magnolia Hill Drive, and a fibrinogen blood sample tested. Tallahassee, Fl 32309. If there is any sign of infection the Visit their website at foal should be put on broad spectrum www.avsequinehospital.com antibiotics. or call 850-386-3619. Another step that should be taken

1st Ohio Cowboy Mounted Shooters WOO-HOO...the sun is shining today AND believe it or not, right now THERE IS NO SNOW ON THE GROUND! Yes, there are still a few big piles of the white stuff here and there but hopefully they will be gone soon. Our horses have not had blankets on this winter, have been outside most days, trust me, they have plenty of winter hair. However, with the added daylight, longer days, and a few warmer days, our horses are shedding like crazy! After a brushing we all look like we have “hairy” coats and have big “piles” of hair on the barn floor! Hopefully after a few consistent days of brushing they will look like horses again instead of “furry beasts”! 1st Ohio’s meeting was February 19th. We have all kinds of good things coming up! First of all our club website is being overhauled... calendar updates, new information, new pictures and current news will be added often, results of our shoots will also be posted. Contacts will have e-mail addresses and phone numbers for anyone interested in trying/ joining Cowboy Mounted Shooting. Our club recently purchased an equipment trailer to make the task of getting our equipment moved to and from the arena. It will be fantastic to have all the equipment in one spot for all the club members to help set up and take down. Our members do a great job working together to produce an organized and professional shoot. We have added some new shoots to our 2014 schedule, the Hamilton County 4-H demo will now be a 3 stage DWPQ on July 10th at the fair and could possibly include a few celebrities! Clint is a graduate of East Central High School. His parents are Terrie VanVolkenburgh and respectively Joe Trentman. He has grown up in the horse world, both parents have rode almost all their life...Clint's grandfather as some of you may remember was the late Terry VanVolkenburgh, who would run up and down the fences when his daughters would run barrels. Clint began barrel racing at the age of 4 with a pony, then went on to particpate in Jr. Rodeo and his favorite event was the sheep riding, hard to believe he is now a barrel racer. He has won the Ohio Youth NBHA and Indiana Youth and Open NBHA , he has also won the Congress youth barrel four times, and was runner up in the Congress Sweepstakes. He placed at Josey Jr. world numerous times, and won the NBHA Youth World 1D in 2006. He loves to barrel race and is now trying his hand at the futurities. ime flies when you are having fun traveling thru states to a rodeo. On March 7th, 8th, and 9th, five of the Indiana High School Rodeo members traveled to Germantown, Tennessee for the Memphis Challenge with Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Arkansas, Missouri and the host state of Tennessee competing together at the Agricenter. Indiana’s very own Anna Dietrich won the first round of the pole bending at the Memphis Challenge with a 20.7 second run. Anna also placed in the overall average in barrel racing. Katlyn O’Leary, Jacob Rorig, Trey Wineinger and Camrie Goodson also competed over the weekend. The Indiana High School Rodeo Association members will be traveling to DuQuoin, Illinois on March 28th, 29th and 30th for their first official rodeo of the spring season.

Make sure to visit the Indiana High School Rodeo booth at the Hoosier Horse Fair (April 4th, 5th and 6th) at the Indianapolis Fairgrounds and talk to the cowboys and cowgirls of the association. They can tell you how to get involved in High School Rodeo, meet new people and compete in events such as: bull riding, saddle bronc and bareback riding, breakaway roping, goat tying, barrel racing, pole bending, steer wrestling, tie down roping, team roping, cutting, trap shooting, and light rifle. You can be a member of the association and only compete in shooting sports if that is what you like to do. Four of our competitors go to Nationals every year in each event to compete against other rodeo contestants from all over the United States. This year the National High School Finals Rodeo will be in Rock Springs, Wyoming in July. Celebrating the 2012-2013 IJRA Rodeo Season We finally had the opportunity to get together on March 1st with the winter weather giving us a small window of opportunity to celebrate our 2012-2013 rodeo season. Thank you to everyone who came to help set up, and to everyone who helped to make this banquet a success. Here’s to a great group of cowboys and cowgirls for a season full of hard work, determination, great sportsmanship, and hours of practice. The best part of the season, and what I think the kids might have enjoyed the most about seeing everyone again at the banquet, was the friendships made within our rodeo family. Congratulations to each and every deserving 2012-2013 member of IJRA! Ride Hard, Go Fast, Have Fun!

Preschool 2013-2014: This group of cowgirls and cowboys are the future of IJRA. This group was fun to watch learn and grow and develop a love for rodeo. Congratulations to our preschool rodeo contestants (left to right) Guthrie Fagg, Elaina Fagg, Kaylee Swan, McKenna Yadon, Cooper Zimmerman, and Charlotte Whitten. Missing from this great group of kids is Emma Verhey.

CHRISTIAN COWBOY COLLECTION

Flight or Fight (and Trust)

w/ Christa Conway

You’ve all heard that expression before. If you’ve been around horses or read anything about horses, you’ll have heard the “flight or fight” phrase. Because they are prey animals in the wild their natural instinct is to flee when threatened or when cornered in threat they will fight. Recently I’ve been working with a young yearling that has had limited handling and it is very evident that her instinct is to “get away” from the threat (me.) She has came a long way in the past few weeks and I can now turn her out in a larger pasture with an old gelding that she trusts. When it is time to catch them and put them in their stalls for the night, she trusts him enough to follow him up to the gate. I then allow him to be a “security blanket” to keep her calm until she allows me to halter her. This would be almost impossible to do quietly and without a fight (putting stress on her) if not for the trust she has in the old gelding. The more time I spend with the filly, the more she realizes that I am not a threat. Her instinct still kicks in and she darts to a corner occasionally, but she is getting better and better because she is gaining trust. I started thinking about how I am a lot like that filly. (And we are a lot like horses in that sense.) When faced with a scary situation or unchartered territory, the easiest response is to “run” the other way. Of course the easiest isn’t always the best. Sometimes the hardest thing and the right thing are the same thing. Human nature leads us to believe that if we ignore it, it will go away...but that is very seldom right. (Unless it’s a mouse or a bee...I ignore them.)

Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV) 5Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

The next option would be to fight...or in human terms....get angry, strike out at the threat (whatever it may be.) That normally does nothing but makes things worse.

“Lean not on your own understanding,” or in other words....go against your instinct towards flight or fight...and trust.

Last month I mentioned imprinting foals (and children) and how it is easier when they are small to teach them certain things. The older horses get, the more time it takes to override the flight or fight instinct and to gain their trust. The same goes for people. The older we get, the harder it is to “retrain” us and convince us that life is so much easier when we put our trust in God.

In all reality, the best thing we can do is to TRUST. Trust in the one who is in control.

Remember, just like I have a plan for that filly, God has a plan for each of us. Jeremiah gives us a glimpse of what God has planned for us.... (whether here or in eternity):

I still have occasions when I want to flee and even fight (believe it or not, it happens.) What I try to remind myself of is that if I will just wait on the Lord, things will be ok.

1Jeremiah 29:11(NIV) 11For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Psalm 27:14 (NIV) 14 Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.

Just like the filly lending her trust to the old gelding and now to me, we should realize that if we put our trust in God, things will be ok. He has a plan for us. One of my favorite scriptures of all time is the following:

Trusting Him.....Happy Trails & God Bless! Christa

On the Trail

By Brother Brad Curtis of Mountain Top Cowboy Church

THREE DAYS’ RIDE Headed for the ranch A three days’ ride The sun and stars A cowboy’s guide

Hunger and thirst Now consumed my soul Wet and shivering On my bedroll

That cat came charging Fire in his eyes Thunder exploded Rumbling sky

That cat is defeated You have a new life Follow the Son And sharpen your knife

A storm arose Lost my way Now it was dark End of the day

Saddlebags were empty Canteen was dry Cat still circling Surely I would die

My legs trembling Heart started quaking That grave opened up The ground was shaking

Tell other cowboys About this trail Follow the Son to heaven Or that big cat into hell

Alone in camp Fire put out by rain In the darkness Cold and in pain

Hour passed A new day’s start Looking around Now fear in my heart

A man stepped out Nothing was said The earth was still That cat dropped dead

Proverbs 27:17 Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.

A big cat circling One I had never seen Seeking to devour His senses keen

I had camped by a grave That stormy night Nothing living here A ghostly sight

I dropped to my knees Said, Thank you, sir Nothing could be heard But my trembling spur

Brother Brad Curtis April 22, 2011

Horse was spooked Ears pinned back Pawing the earth Awaiting attack

Jumped to my feet Grabbed my gear Saddled up That cat I could hear

My pony returned Time to head home A clear trail ahead Not having to roam

My knife was dull Powder was not dry Darkness was broken Lightning in the sky

Heart a-racing My pony broke free No way to escape Death it would be

That’s when he said, Cowboy, you’ve found the way Because of my journey And this third day

One Last (& most important) thought… Salvation is a gift and a choice...... Read past issues of our Christian Cowboy Collection and the Christian Barrel Racer’s Newsletter at the website below!

Jesus died on the cross as the final sacrifice for our sins. He was resurrected on the 3rd day and he defeated death and Satan for us. All we have to do is believe that He beat death, acknowledge it with our words and accept Him as our personal savior. That’s when the rebirth happens and we are changed! He then promises us eternal life with Him in Heaven! You can’t earn your way into Heaven; you have to accept His gift of salvation. So many people think they “aren’t good enough” to get to Heaven… But… Salvation is a GIFT from God and you don’t earn a gift. Gifts are given to you and for the gift to be yours, you have to accept it. All we have to do is accept this wonderful gift. I know I have…won’t you?

But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. Romans 5:15 For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Romans 10: 9-10

Indiana Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association - ITOBA NEWS Steve Heuertz photo

ITOBA

Indiana

Thoroughbred

Owners & Breeders

Association

Anticipation is Building

T

rainers, Owners, and Racing fans, alike, are anxiously awaiting the opening of Indiana Downs Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse Race Track. How is that statement anymore true this year than in years past? The biggest change is all of the changes that have occurred to the track since the close of the 2013 Season. Since the enactment of the one track, one breed movement, the racing surfaces no longer need to be laid and removed each year. This, in turn, allowed Centaur and Indiana Downs, with the help of nationally recognized experts Butch Lear, and Dr. Michael “Mick” Peterson the ability to create a long term track with safety and design at its foundation. The knowledge and experience these experts bring, along with the investment made by Centaur Gaming and CEO, Rod Ratcliff, Indiana Downs will be able to provide a track surface that rivals some of the very best. Speaking with Centaur Gaming CEO, Rod Ratcliff, I found that while the track is of the highest priority, it is but a piece of the total renovation project. He was delighted to run down the list of many improvements that will be seen at Indiana Downs. A New $1M tote board and video screen will be center focus. The track side view will show off restructured landscaping while the inside of the club house will be lined with all new flat screen monitors for fans to keep an eye on the action. Some track owners would stop with the improvements made where the public can enjoy them. However, Mr. Ratcliff has continued his company’s investment to benefit those working along the backside of the track. At

www.itoba.com Phone: 317-709-1100

the request of the horsemen, the receiving barn will receive $100K worth of improvements, most of these to establish greater air flow. Additional lighting and ventilation improvements are being made to all of the existing barns. And, $5.2M has been dedicated to the building of four new barns that add 304 more stalls to the count. Resident dorms will be improved as the current dorms undergo a $200K renovation, and a $2.1M new dorm structure will create 45 additional rooms. Rather than continuing to outsource its kitchen, Centaur will be running the track kitchen. This change has begun with a $50-100K reformation. The voice of the horsemen has contributed to more than what changes needed to be made along the back side of the track. Negotiating bodies have taken into account the horsemen’s call for a more stable Indiana Program. Indiana has established a deal that dedicates to the program 12% of Centaur Gaming’s AGR over a guaranteed 7 years. Rod Ratcliff is a supporter of the Indiana Horseman and our Indiana Racing Program. He explains, “You want to know why I respect you so much? Racing is the way I got it.” He has relied on the support of the horsemen and now, the horsemen’s share will increase proportionally. There is a new level of cooperation and progress between the Track and the Horsemen’s Associations never before seen. There are improvements being implemented and goals for more to come. Just as the program was designed to do, what is an exciting improvement to the Indiana Horse Racing Industry, is a positive impact to Indiana, as a whole.

Gulfstream First Track to use Out-ofCompetition Testing Grant Fund The Jockey Club and The Stronach Group jointly announced today that Gulfstream Park will become the first racetrack to use the “Graded Stakes Out-of-Competition Testing Grant Fund,” which was announced at the 2013 Round Table Conference on Matters Pertaining to Racing last August. The fund provides for financial assistance from The Jockey Club to help defray qualifying expenses associated with out-of-competition testing programs. In both 2014 and 2015, The Jockey Club is making available up to $250,000 in funding. “We owe it to our horsemen and our fans to provide fair competition,” said Tim Ritvo, president, COO and general manager of Gulfstream Park Racing and Casino, a property of The Stronach Group. “Out-of-competition testing is a way for Gulfstream Park to achieve that and the Florida Derby will be the first race in our program.” “The Jockey Club strongly believes that out-of-competition testing promotes the integrity of Thoroughbred racing and over time will better the breed,” said James L. Gagliano, the president and COO of The Jockey Club. “We are extremely pleased that Gulfstream Park has stepped forward to become the first to participate in this program and we look forward to working with other interested tracks that wish to take advantage of it.” A Thoroughbred racetrack’s participation in the Graded Stakes Out-ofCompetition Testing Grant Fund is voluntary. Thoroughbred racetracks that elect to participate in the fund may receive reimbursement to defray some of the costs associated with out-of-competition testing subject to certain criteria. Racetracks interested in participating in the Graded Stakes Out-of-Competition Testing Grant Fund and obtaining the eligibility criteria should contact The Jockey Club for more information. The Graded Stakes Out-of-Competition Testing Grant Fund is also available to state regulatory authorities seeking to enhance their existing testing programs by applying directly to the Racing Medication and Testing Consortium (RMTC) for funds. The Stronach Group racetracks include Santa Anita Park, Gulfstream Park & Casino, Golden Gate Fields, Portland Meadows, Laurel Park and Pimlico Race Course, home of the world-famous Preakness. The company owns and operates the Palm Meadows Training Center in Florida, and is one of North America’s top racehorse breeders through its award-winning Adena Springs operation. The Stronach Group is one of the world’s largest suppliers of pari-mutuel wagering systems, technologies and services. Its companies include AmTote, a global leader in wagering technology; Xpressbet, an Internet and telephone account wagering service; and Monarch Content Management, which acts as a simulcast purchase and sales agent of horse racing content for numerous North American racetracks and wagering outlets. The Stronach Group is also a major producer of televised horseracing programming through its HRTV cable and satellite network and is North America’s premier supplier of virtual online horseracing games, as well as a leading producer of social media content for the horse racing industry. THREE DAYS’ RIDE

Headed for the ranch A three days’ ride The sun and stars A cowboy’s guide

Hunger and thirst Now consumed my soul Wet and shivering On my bedroll

That cat came charging Fire in his eyes Thunder exploded Rumbling sky

That cat is defeated You have a new life Follow the Son And sharpen your knife

A storm arose Lost my way Now it was dark End of the day

Saddlebags were empty Canteen was dry Cat still circling Surely I would die

My legs trembling Heart started quaking That grave opened up The ground was shaking

Tell other cowboys About this trail Follow the Son to heaven Or that big cat into hell

Rabbits Baskets of Eggs & Joy Have you ever heard of a rabbit that lays eggs? Well, I’m not sure if this rabbit I keep hearing about is actually laying the eggs, but I hear that this peculiar rabbit delivers them (and other goodies - including jellybeans) to kids (and some dogs - yours truly) in baskets on Easter morning. I’m not sure if I am buying into it - sounds a lot like the chubby fella in the red suit that brings presents at Christmas. I’ll leave it up to you to decide where the goodies come from. I am looking forward to seeing what is in the basket for me should it arrive again this year. (Yes, that’s right, AGAIN.) I have received a basket with goodies in it each Easter for the past several years....I just had never heard the rumor about the rabbit. Makes me wonder. If it’s true, what does the rabbit have to gain from these “deposits?” Could it be a trap? Ya never know, those rabbits are sneaky. I’ve watched enough Bugs Bunny to know that.

If it is a basket from this frivolous rabbit - what would possess it to leave goodies for the dogs that live here? Honestly, if it is some kind of peace offering - not gonna work, Mr. Bunny. Silly rabbit, treats are for kids...and dogs ALWAYS chase rabbits. It’s bred into us - especially Jack Russell dogs....it’s what we do. Needless to say, rabbit or no rabbit, I am still looking forward to Easter morning. It’s always a lot of fun to watch the kids that live here find their baskets of goodies. Of course, I find mine way before they find theirs...then I help everyone else. They spend a few minutes deciding which treats to eat first and then they all get dressed up (like most other Sundays around here) and head off to church.

look forward to them. I know there is something extra special about Easter. (Much more than a rabbit bringing baskets full of eggs and treats.) I have heard the people here talk about it many times. I have read up on it a bit and you can read about it to in several places in the bible. It’s a very interesting story and it explains a lot about hope and it makes sense as to why my people seem to be so happy and joyful all of the time. (I like joy.) I like treats too....until next month..... Waiting on that rabbit,

Bella

I have only been to the Cowboy Church services when we are at the barrel races with the horses, but I always enjoy listening to the people talk and

Mystery of the Month Well, we are back to using our past covers as our Mystery of the Month. this one goes waaaay waaaaay back. Can you name the month and year we featured this as the cover of The Horse Resource? You’ll notice that this was before the addition of the “Fast” portion of the logo and the “look” was in it’s beginning stages. The cover features the stallion Verily Six Bugs who is shown being ridden by Laura Lee Thomas and was owned by Rita Gambino. This was one exceptional stallion who created quite a resume for himself including an International Finals Rodeo qualification. Unfortunately Verily Six Bugs passed away at an unfairly young age while in his prime. Can you tell us the month and year of this cover? Be the first to send us an email or give us a call with the correct answer to win your choice of a one year subscription to The Horse Resource, a “Horsey Hat” or a “Horsey-T.”

Call us at 765-744-7363 or email thehorseresource@msn.com with your answer!

Good luck!

We Have A Winner! We have a winner! Wayne Stapleton of Sheridan, Indiana knew the ladies in our mystery picture last month. We have another Midwest Match Race team. These ladies rode on the GBRA of Indiana (GBRA-I) team at the 1978 Midwest Match barrel race. The ladies are as follows and we have included the horse names in parentheses (to the best of our knowledge): Back row: Vickie Powers (this one is questionable and we don’t know the horse’s name), Cindy DeLong (Boss), Princess Elliott (Ima Sassy Chick ?), Tena Ziegler (DelRay), Betty Rice (Peanut); Back Row: Marcia Fetterhoff (Wimpy Chick), Joi VanVolkenburgh (Baby Lotta Chic), Debby Rice (Continental Queen), Bernice Streetman (Handy), Vicki Benefiel (Paul.) Congratulations to this month’s winner. For solving our mystery, they will receive their choice of a FREE subscription, a “horsey T-shirt or a “horsey” hat for their prize.

We Need Your Pics From the Past.....

We have almost ran out of photos!.....Please send us your older photos of horsemen and women (and kids) that are still active in the horse business today. Or if you have pictures of a well known horse or event....that will mix things up a bit. We’re up for some new mysterys if you are!! Keep sending us those photos!! Send via email to thehorseresource@msn.com or mail to 12601 S CR 200 W Muncie, IN 47302
