Important Changes for 2011 Regarding Existing Out of Competition Rules

All horses nominated to stake races will be eligible for out of competition testing from the day of nomination. Several drugs were added to Out of Competition Testing for 2011 including Zilpaterol, Ractopamine or any similar agent. If you have any questions about any of these rules, please refer to Indiana Code 71 IAC 8.5-2-5 and 71 IAC 8.5-3-4. You may also contact the Indiana Horse Racing Commission at http://www.in.gov/ hrc/ or (317) 233-3120. How This Affects You • Once a horse is nominated to a stake race, he WILL be in the pool of horses used for selection of Out of Competition Testing. • If the owner/trainer has been contacted and notified that their horse has been selected for Out of Competition Testing, that horse must be produced at the track by the time provided by the IHRC. • If the horse is not brought to the race track within the allotted time, the horse will be ineligible to race in Indiana for one year. • The current trainer MUST be named at the time of nomination. If there is a change of trainer at any time, the new information must be forwarded to the Q.H.R.A.I. immediately. • If a nominated horse becomes lame, sick or for any other reason will NOT compete in the trials or finals, he must be officially scratched through the QHRAI (prior to being contacted by IHRC) or he will remain eligible for ALL Out of Competition Rules. • Except for stake races where high money earners are preferred, there will be no refunds of nominations or payments.

By signing and submitting this stakes nomination form, the trainer is hereby agreeing to abide by Indiana Horse Racing code. Once this nomination is received by QHRAI, you will receive a reminder for next payment date and a list of nominated horses. Sustaining payments must be submitted on time whether or not you receive this reminder. Nominations and sustaining payments will be added to the stakes purses. A 20% marketing and administration fee will be withheld from all open stakes nomination and sustaining payments.

Late payments - If nomination is missed - double the missed nomination plus the sustaining payment. Must be postmarked by the sustaining payment date. No late nominations or payments accepted after sustaining payment date.

All nominations and payments must be mailed to: QHRAI

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Hot. One word for how our summer has been here in Indiana. I have to admit that we have taken a few weeks off from the horses to spend on the lake (as much as Bella thinks it was for her, it was for us!) We attended the Indiana NBHA State Championship Show and then headed to the lake for a well deserved break. This meant that the horses were given a break as well.....and given a choice, they are spending much of their time with their faces in front of a fan during the day. If I were them, given a choice, I believe I’d do the same. Seems like a silly reminder....but I feel it necessary to include this is the time of year to make sure all of your animals have PLENTY of water and some sort of shade or cover from the sun. We take for granted when we are sitting in the air conditioning while we watch them out the window that they must be comfortable if we are....guess again. This has been one hot summer and the horses are feeling it when we may not. This month’s issue includes the coverage provided by Lauri Givens of the National Pole Bending Association World Championships from the end of June as well as coverage from Quarter Horse Racing Day at Indiana Downs. Of course there are the regulars....Bella gives us her opinion on taking a break and Clint is crowned “Cutest Little Cowboy.” There is lots of fun in this issue, we hope you enjoy it! We had a great time at the Indiana NBHA State Championships (you can read more about them in next month’s issue.) Next month’s issue will also include the Ohio IBRA State Show story and more. If you’re not a subscriber, all you have to do is fill out the form and send it in to have The Fast Horse Resource delivered to your mailbox each month. We’re working on making things better for our readers so let us know what you think. Email us at thehorseresource@msn.com to give us your thoughts. Until next month........take a break once in a while.....try to stay cool and count your blessings on horseback!

God Bless and Ride Safe, Christa Conway

A Little “Barrel Talk” More great suggestions and recipes found on Barrel Horse World’s Barrel Talk.....Enjoy! (Just remember - The Horse Resource is not endorsing these “remedies.” We recommend that you consult your veterinarian before using any home remedy on your horse.) supersenior Posted 2011-07-09 2:07 AM Subject: RE: Horse Home Remedy Thread (abcess, detangler, liniment, etc.) Tent Hoarder - Posts: 1596 Location: One of Yesterday’s Liabilities ~ Oklahoma Outback Make your own waxed thread/speedy stitcher string.... in the fabric notions dept (Walmart of course) they sell a sml round plastic box of beeswax....it has slots to run your thread or string thru to coat with the bwax... take the string from your feed sack tops and draw it thru the slots multiple times, then roll up the newly waxed string on a spool or old pill bottle... It is STRONG and will not rot.... bambigirl Posted 2011-07-10 1:38 PM Member - Posts: 8 I have a older mare who is very sentitive to flies....I feed her a supplement with garlic in it & this year I am using Spalding fly predator, which has helped the flies over all.

She is on an acre of pasture and when in her pen I keep it clean. The problem is the few flies around go right to her front legs and make them bleed and swell up :( Does anyone have a home remedy like maybe a paste I can put on her legs to keep the bitten flies away!! goin4broke Posted 2011-07-10 5:36 PM Forever Young at Heart - Posts: 2190 Location: Way down yonder in the indian nation~Oklahoma I don’t know if this will help on her front legs or not, but I KNOW that it helps with the midline... maybe it will help your mare too!!! 1- 20 ounce bottle Aloe Vera Gel (I use generic) 1 -12 ounce bottle of EXTRA THICK hand lotion (any cheap kind will work, thicker the better) OR 1 large tube of Corona salve (lotion is cheaper and works just as good) 4 ounces of Hydrocortizone CREAM 4 ounces of triple antibiotic CREAM 1 ounce of oil of citronella (ask for this at the pharmacy, if

you cannot get it, you can use 2T of Skin so soft bath oil) Mix this stuff all together and put back in one of the large bottles (if you get one with a pump on it, all the better) slather this on the effected areas twice a day... the flys tend to pick on skin that is extra dry, because dry skin is easier pickin’s to them... if you keep this on the parts that are oozing, leaving a thick scum over it, it will help heal whats there, and prevent more bites from happening. I have a horse that is also extremly allergic to fly bites and mosquito saliva. His midline was raw most of the time from so much torture from the bugs... I’ve been using this all summer and he is good to go... still not much hair regrowth, but he’s not raw and oozing either. I sure hope this will help your mare!!! News Cowgirls Breakaway Roping Coming to a Town Near You! “If you build it they will come.” This quote became well known after the 1989 movie Field of Dreams where Kevin Costner played the role of an Iowa corn farmer who after hearing voices interprets them as a command to build a baseball diamond in his fields. Without much faith from anyone, he does and the Chicago Black Sox come. In July of 2010, the proposal was made to the IPRA board to add the Cowgirls Breakaway Roping as an official championship event to be held during IFR 42 in January 2012. With every addition or change made extra work is required on someone’s behalf. However, with everyone pitching in and seeing the bigger picture of what the breakaway roping addition can bring forth to the IPRA, we have been successful at recruiting new members and gaining national attention for our association. Even though the Cowgirls Breakaway Roping is not a mandatory event, it has been sanctioned at over 50 rodeos so far this season (Dec 2010July 2011). Without the support of the stock contractors, rodeo committees, the contestants who shared their desire for the Cowgirls Breakaway Roping to become an official event and the IPRA board this wouldn’t be possible. Thank you to everyone who has contributed their time and efforts to the Cowgirls Breakaway Roping. We are also proud to announce that $5,000 will be added to the Cowgirls Breakaway Roping at IFR 42 with the possibility of more sponsorship money becoming available as contracts are being finalized. Also a World

Championship Saddle and buckle will be presented along with go round buckles, average buckle, rookie buckle, and jackets to the IFR Cowgirls Breakaway Roping Finalist. * Cowgirls buy your IPRA cards and get in the hunt to make rodeo history by qualifying for the Cowgirls Breakaway Roping at IFR 42. They built it. Now, lets go rope.

KY Horse Council Leads Strategic Planning Session for Equine Industry Kentucky’s horses are often referred to as a “signature industry”, providing the Commonwealth with an identity that goes beyond state and national borders. Horses provide Kentuckians thousands of jobs, millions in tax revenue to the Commonwealth, and hours of pleasure for Kentucky horsemen and women. Despite the size and impact of the industry, Kentucky does not engage routinely in long-term strategic planning of initiatives to benefit all breeds and equestrian disciplines. The Kentucky Horse Council (KHC) hosts a Kentucky Equine Strategic Planning Session on September 24, 2011. KHC seeks the involvement of all equine associations throughout the Commonwealth for this important process. “This planning effort to develop initiatives for the benefit of all owners,

News riders, and breeders is something that is a natural fit for the Kentucky Horse Council”, says Anna Zinkhon, President of the KHC Board. “The event will not only support the industry and the Commonwealth, but will also help to unify the community, which has been known to be fragmented into different interest groups. When we all work together and speak as one voice, we are much more effective,” Zinkhon continued. The objective of the planning session is the development of key industry improvement initiatives. The Kentucky Horse Council, with equine association participation, will implement these projects over the next five years. The Strategic Planning Session is by invitation only, limited to Kentucky equine association leaders or their representatives, saddle clubs, and university equine programs. Breed and discipline representatives from across the state participated in a leaders meeting in May to set the stage for this strategic planning session. ABOUT THE KENTUCKY HORSE COUNCIL - The Kentucky Horse Council is a non-profit organization dedicated, through education and leadership, to the protection and development of the Kentucky equine community. The Kentucky Horse Council provides educational programs and information, outreach and communication to Kentucky horse owners and enthusiasts, equine professional networking opportunities through KENA, trail riding advocacy, health and welfare programs, and personal liability insurance and other membership benefits. A leveling system for AQHA shows is under consideration The American Quarter Horse Journal - July 12, 2011

A level playing field for all competitors is one of the hallmarks of fair competition. AQHA has been working for nearly a year on making that happen for its shows.“A lot of sports – horse racing, barrel racing, car racing and boxing, just to name a few – offer numerous competition levels based on skill; physical characteristics like weight, age and type (or breed when it comes to animals); or career earnings,” said Tom Persechino, AQHA executive director of competition and breed integrity. “It’s time that the American Quarter Horse show industry broadened its offerings and followed the suit of many of our alliance partners like the National Cutting Horse, National Reining Horse, National Snaffle Bit and National Reined Cow Horse associations and developed multiple opportunities for new people to enter the arena at a level where they’re comfortable competing.

“Our goal has been to help American Quarter Horse owners make that step to showing their horses at our shows,” said Patti Carter-Pratt, AQHA executive director of shows. “We know that our horse owners are proud of the work they have done with their horses, and we want to give them a place to show where they won’t feel intimidated. A fair and level playing field is a good way for us to start.” A Blue-Ribbon Process Through its 70-year existence, AQHA has continually reviewed and improved its competition to reflect the changing needs of its competitors – from the initial inclusion of amateur competition to developing Novice, Limited, Select and Green divisions. Today, many members and staff felt it was important to take a more in-depth look at decreasing exhibitor and horse numbers competing at AQHA-approved shows. However, it’s important to remember that no major changes to an industry as successful as AQHA shows can occur without in-depth input and review by multiple committees and members. In 2009, the AQHA Blue-Ribbon Task Force was appointed by the Executive Committee to review all aspects of AQHA competition and make suggestions for improvement. The task force has met multiple times in the past two years to review volumes of statistics on AQHA shows, determine trends and brainstorm ways to improve – all the while seeking input from members on the best ways to improve AQHA competition without harming the success of high-point or world show competition. The task force then made recommendations to the show council and show committee. The council and committee then made recommendations to the membership and board of directors at this year’s convention. All along the way, the Executive Committee has been monitoring the progress of the various task forces and committees. At its meeting in July, the Executive Committee was scheduled to make the final review of the various programs. “It’s all done to create fairness in competition, as well as to attract the widest group of competitors and to grow our sport.” At press time, the AQHA Executive Committee was scheduled to will review the proposed leveling program at its quarterly meeting, July 1820, to set show points and fine-tune other guidelines in making AQHA competition as fair as possible for exhibitors at every level. The proposed leveling system includes more and different divisions, including new Rookie and Intermediate showing levels for exhibitors, as well as Green and Progressive levels for horses; more and different awards; and a proposed Novice championship show. A final announcement is expected around the conclusion of the 2011 Built Ford Tough AQHYA World Championship Show.

Indiana Downs 2011

or the second straight year Quarter Horse Day at Indiana Downs was a huge success, if you missed it, you missed the biggest day of Quarter Horse racing in the history of Indiana. Every single statistic that can be measured was up, up, up, purse money paid out, number of races, number of starters, live handle, simulcasting handle, even hot dog sales. Hoosiers are starving for Quarter Horse racing and on July 2nd they got an opportunity to enjoy a big QH racing celebration while watching a full card of the “Fastest Horses on the Track”.  Over $650,000 in purse money was paid out, the most money paid out in QH races in Indiana History.  Over $82,000 was bet live at the track during the races a new record not only for QH races, but one of the highest live handles in the history of Indiana Downs.  In access of $350,000 was wagered around the country on the QH races on July 2nd, this is a big increase over last year.  There were 98 starters, we believe this is a record number of starters on a 10 race card at Indiana Downs.  Attendance is hard to measure, but everyone from track announcer and the stewards ( who have a birds eye view) to betting tellers, security and paddock officials, all agreed that this was the biggest crowd they had ever seen for a day of live racing at Indiana Downs.

rather than Indiana Breds. The amount of money spent on breeding and raising quality foals “in state” has to cause 15 to 20 times the economic activity compared to buying out of state. Quality is hard to measure, but easy to recognize. While Indiana sired and bred two year olds seem to have made a noticeable improvement, no one can go back and improve 4,5 and 6 year olds’ genetics.

P

urse money and racing opportunities fill the gates for most every Quarter Horse race in Indiana, additionally they fill the QH stalls on track, as well as the boarding and training facilities near the tracks. The QHRAI worked diligently for years prior to the flow of slot money to plan for the day we would have the purse money that would make us competitive with other states offering racinos, so when that day came in the spring of 2008 we had a “plan”. The officers and leaders of our association worked closely with the IHRC, Quarter Horse Breed Development and management from both tracks to unveil a program that would give the horsemen who invested in Indiana QH racing a real opportunity to make a profit in the QH racing industry in our state. After a couple of years in the books, the facts speak for themselves… the QH racing program in Indiana is one of the most successful, fastest growing programs in the country. The 2011 spring meet at Indiana Downs has just concluded and while many of the stats look the same, (Ron Raper dominated as leading trainer, Harold Collins took the leading riding title on the last night of QH racing and Randy Thompson led the way as both owner and breeder). But as much as things seem to look the same at first glance there seems to be a very noticeable improvement of the quality of Indiana bred and sired horses, in particular 2 year olds. This is hopefully just a small sign of things to come, the constant upgrading in quality of Indiana bred and sired horses is possibly the most absolute way to secure our program in the future. The term “economic impact” and “agribusiness” were used over and over when the racino legislation was first passed, and they were the same terms used this past spring to SAVE our industry in the spring legislative session. It was just a couple of months ago that the state budget was cutting purse money for all breeds from 55 million to 29 million, at one point the QH’s were getting cut from 5 million to 1.8 million, we dodged a bullet in a bad economy. But unless the racing industry wants to be first on the legislative chopping block every year we need to, or better yet HAVE to make the terms “Economic Impact” and “Agribusiness” mean something. Breeding quality racing Quarter Horses in Indiana is the answer which will guarantee the economic activity that we need to happen. There are two specific areas of racing growth that would NOT promote this activity; 1.) Causing Indiana breeders to have a false sense of security with a mediocre breeding program, this would include sired horses to hide from breds or breds to hide from open horses. 2.) Creating a program that makes it more profitable for owners to buy open horses

Page 19

The QHRAI has had a very clear philosophy as it pertains to the Indiana Bred vs. Indiana Sired programs, in a nutshell it is this; the Indiana sired program had to have a couple of premier stake races or it would become obsolete in a very short period of time, that would have been a disaster. Indiana sire owners were and still are by far our biggest breeders and have spent hundreds of thousands if not millions on farms, breeding facilities and all the other expenses that go into breeding and raising babies, which IS economic activity. Having said that, we couldn’t create a program that promoted mediocrity, so, except for a couple of maidens and two allowances the sired and bred horses share the same overnight program. An Indiana sired horse MUST be able to compete within the bred program, if there were to be a separate sired overnight program we believe that would create a level of protectionisim that would severely inhibit the quality of those breeding programs. The Indiana bred program is a little different, because of the use of shipped semen, and rules that allow a pregnant mare to be brought into the state and foal an Indiana bred if bred back to an Indiana sire, the only ingredient needed were good purses and time. The combination of multiple $100k stake races and the competitive nature of breeders and owners nearly ensures the rapid rate of increased quality of Indiana breds. Because of a significant increase in bonus for Indiana breds competing in open races there was a big increase in the number of breds that tested the open competition waters and they measured up well. There have been a lot of Indiana stallions that can’t be blamed for their progeny’s lack of success on the race track. Breeders, lack of quality mares, management, and poor promotion share the blame. There were a lot of new breeders, owners and trainers 10 – 15 years ago. Twaynas Dash has an undefeated two year old this year who killed the breds in the Jaguar Rocket, HQH Burn Notice is out of a mare that made the consolation of the All American Futurity and is probably the best mare he has bred in Indiana. Twaynas Dash didn’t know he came to Indiana, he didn’t dial down his genetics, there are very few mares in Indiana who have a pedigree, produce record or race record to come close to him. Twaynas Dash is the leading sire by money earned at the Indiana Downs spring meet. Changes aren’t coming they have already happened, I suspect that the leading breeders have not only upgraded their breeding programs, but have made significant changes more than once in the past 3 years. There is a lot of money at stake in Quarter Horse racing in Indiana and that is going to drive this already competitive business, Hoosier breeders and owners are going to have to stay progressive and forward thinking to keep up. Look at the results from Indiana Downs and keep an eye on the winners circle at Hoosier Park, BREEDING RULES.

here were 5 Stake races run on July second at Indiana Downs, all had a purse of over $100,000. These races touted not only the best Indiana has to offer, but included some of the best racing Quarter Horses from around the Midwest and beyond.

Bobby Byrd. Shortly after the race we caught up with Ron. “Heck of a race. Rapid Ivory ran a good trial, had a little bobble at the start. Today, he stood great with horses acting up on either side of him. Harold did a good job with him. He will get a nice rest until the Governors Stakes at Hoosier Park. I was real impressed with my #6 horse (TF First Pick), he was two lengths out of it, came back and ran 3rd, big race for him. This was an effort by everyone in the barn, all worthy of the win.”

Rapid Ivory

rior to the gates opening for the Heartland finals, the betting public had this race narrowed down to five horses. The other five were all going off at 15-1 or more. Of the favorites, Ron Raper had both of his picked to be in the mix. TF First Pick was the morning line favorite for good reason, this Dash to First Place colt had set the fastest qualifying time over a solid field in the trials and scoring a 99 speed index. But when the gate opened it was Ron’s other qualifier that was to rule the day, Rapid Ivory, a colt by one of the hottest young stallions in the country, Ivory James, and out of the First Down Laveaux mare Rapid Fire Cash. He is now a stakes winner of over $70,000, sporting a record of 2 wins and 1 second from 3 outs.

Finishing 2nd by a head was Leading Talent. This Prime Talent colt out of the great Special Leader mare Leading Diva is Owned by Alejandro Figueroa, trained by Jorge Luis Mendoza, ridden by Francisco Raul Ramirez, Jr. and bred by Bobby Cox. Finishing 3rd was the above mentioned TF First Pick, the fastest qualifier trained by Ron Raper, owned by Don Jacobs ridden by Tommy Johns and bred by Steve Tate. The remaining order of finish starting with fourth is SH Sheisadash, Unseen Angel, PT Special Feature, Southern Chicks Man, Minnie Regards, Flippin Fantasy, Eye Slip By. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL ON A GREAT RACE AND A GREAT FIELD OF BABIES.

The QHRAI-Indiana Live Derby

Rapid Ivory

This colt never hid his talent, breaking his maiden by nearly 3 lengths and scoring a 92 speed index, but he did look soundly beaten in his trial running second and looking “all out”. But Ron Raper and winning jockey Harold Collins went to the front and never looked back holding on by a head in a close three horse photo finish where three heads separated the first three horses. This nice colt was bred in North Carolina by Albert Wells and owned by

Finishing out the field was Speed Smith, Eye Opening Favorite, Missourian, Cash For Braggs, My Corona is Rare, Gottabeme and Streakin to de Money.

The Jaguar Rocket Stake

Indiana Bred-2 year olds-300 Yards-Purse $124,800

Tortuga Tony didn’t disappoint; going off at a buck forty he went to the front and smoked the field under virtually a hand ride by Harold Collins, winning by nearly a length and running a 104 speed index. This is a really nice three year old and he has the breeding to back it up. His sire, Stel Corona, is a multiple stakes winning son of Corona Cartel and his bottom side is just as good or better. Bred by Paul Jones (Quarter Horse’s most prolific trainer in 25 years), Tortuga Tony is out of the Dash To Chivato mare Just Want To Be Me, a stakes winner at Los Alamitos of over $50,000 and the bottom side only gets better the closer you look. The “Turtle’s” 3rd dam is the great mare Shirley B Gayle, stakes winner of over $600,000. We spoke to Tortuga Tony’s conditioner Jesus Gonzalez Jr. between races. “Good horse, (Tortuga Tony) he is a very consistent runner. I would like to dedicate this win to my family for trusting in me. It was a perfect ride, Harold (Collins) has the experience and the focus. I look to send him to Hoosier Park in the Bradford Stakes, and you never know maybe even the All-American. It’s a possibility, we will see.” Tortuga Tony

nyone who has trained race horses before can tell you how hard it is, nearly impossible, to win three races in a row. Let alone go three for three with a two year old, but that is just what the 9 other starters were facing in the finals of the Jaguar Rocket Futurity. HQH Burn Notice walked into the starting gate on July 2nd as an undefeated 2 year old and put his unblemished record on the line against one of the strongest fields of state bred two year olds to start in the Hoosier state. “Burnie,” as he is known around the Raper stable, was understandably the overwhelming betting favorite paying his backers only a sixty cent profit on a 2 dollar bet, but he didn’t disappoint. This undefeated gelding made it look easy going to the front and extending his lead to a length under the guidance of jockey Aaron Hunt. This gelding not only had Indiana’s all time leading trainer, last year’s leading jockey Aaron Hunt, but once again he had the BREEDING to back it up. His sire is Indiana’s leading sire, Twaynas Dash, a stakes winning son of the immortal Dash for Cash, the most successful sire line in the HQH Burn Notice

Jesus is a young trainer who got his training credentials this year and he is making the most of the fine stable of horses his family has turned over to him winning three stake races at the Indiana Downs meet alone. Finishing second was Jessgonnafly, a North Dakota bred? This son of Fly Jess Fly is out of a Toast to Dash mare, trained by Loren Brocka, owned by Isabell Guerrero, ridden by Victor Olivo and bred by Legacy Ranch. Up for third was KT Makin A Tax Move, this Maknmoves gelding is out of the Lanes Leinester mare Lanella, bred in Utah by

QHRAI News history of QH racing. His bottom side is the Great mare Twayna, dam of Casidy Casanova. Hqh Burn Notice’s bottom side is super strong as well, his mother is a Tiny Master Bug mare, Honey Bunny Bug, who herself made the consolation of the All American. Between races Ron had this to say, “I couldn’t have a better owner in the world in David Whitman. HQH Burn Notice, ‘Burnie’ is the quietest horse to train, quietest in the barn. Out on the track he is all business. I am just very thankful to have such a great owner. (I) tried to talk him out of buying this horse, but he is just a good honest horse.”

She came up for sale at the Hoosier Park paddock sale, and I bought her. The only two people that were bidding on her were Tom Mosley and myself, he stopped at $3300 and I went one more time and got her for $3,400, I think this filly has a lot of talent and will only get better. Rodney did a great job riding her and all the folks at my barn and at the farm caused us to have a great day.”

Finishing in second was Smart Visions. This Real Visions gelding is a product of the successful Mark Michel Breeding program, he is owned and trained by Dickey Benton and piloted by Julie Veltman. Up for third is Successful Dash, this Cartel Success gelding was bred by one of the nation’s leading breeders Bill Price, Owned by Indiana Downs leading owner Randy Thompson in partnership with Darrel Henry. He was ridden by David Brown and was one of 3 qualifiers for trainer Tom Mosley. The remaining order of finish starting with fourth is Bye Bye Corona, Avitarr, Shakem Down Stoney, Rarely Scrutinized, Highway to Payoff, Carmens Fantasy and Swiper. p until the gates opened for the Blue River Derby there wasn’t much drama, for the most part the “favs” did what they were supposed to do, but that all changed as Bitter Sweet Song and Air Born Leader had a private match race among a strong field of Indiana Bred Sophomores. The chalk favorite, Lovemelikethat, a stakes winning filly who has never missed the board, got off to a rough start and last year’s “Horse of the Year,” StoleNLoot, had an erratic trip. Half way through this dash there were only two horses involved and when they hit the line it was a lightly raced son of Agouti, Bitter Sweet Song (20-1) in front by a neck over Air Born Leader who was coming off a recent win in the $100,000 Born Runner Stake. Bitter Sweet Song is by the multiple stakes winning son of Corona Cartel, Agouti and out of a stakes winning Shawne Bug mare, Whata Sweet Song. After the race we caught up with Owner/Trainer, Randy Haffner. “I was familiar with this filly last year, the people that had her were having a very hard time getting her going, she became notorious as a “bucker,” she would buck out of the gate every time she schooled.

Page 22

Bitter Sweet Song was bred by Circle S Ranch, ridden by Rodney Prescott and is owned and trained by Randy Haffner. Up for second was Air Born Leader, this lengthy gelding is by Leader of the Class and out of a stakes winning Born Runner mare, Air Born Jazz. Owned and Bred by Randy Thompson, Trained by Tom Mosley and ridden by Shanley Jackson. In third was the favorite, Lovemelikethat. This filly is by Likenothingyoueversaw and out of a Cash Stride mare Mystery Stride, bred by Mark Michel, trained by John McCreary, owned by Cooter Daniels and ridden by Aaron Hunt. The remaining order of finish starting with 4th was; Hit An Awsome High, Feature Me Packin, La Una Viva, Stone Roller, Cant Tell Me Nothing, Big Brown Dasher and StoleNLoot.

This race was a perfect example of what makes QH racing the best, it went off in a 101 speed index, a 20-1 horse won it and the winner was purchased for $3400. Gotta Love It. Congratulations to ALL.

This gelding was purchased by Jesus Gonzalez at the conclusion of last year’s race season, and certainly didn’t disappoint his connections, the rumored price is in the $25 -$30,000 range and so far this year earned more than double that. Bred by one of Indiana’s leading breeders, Dianne Moster, Hooked on Magic is by the nice stallion Heza Fast Dash and out of the Graded Stakes producing mare Hooked on Clover who is by Hooked on Cash. his race, like the Blue River Derby, went against the morning line, Bright Eyed Vision, the heavy favorite finished 6th and Brimmerton Lane, 2nd favorite, finished 4th. But the winner of the last stake run in 2010, Hooked on Magic, showed his class and speed closing in for a neck win and a 97 speed index, not to mention over $60,000 in earnings.

Hooked On Magic

Jesus Gonzalez Jr. - “(Hooked On Magic), he is all right. Well, what can I tell you, it is our first Indiana bred horse and to win a Stakes race is incredible. Yes, and with Shanley (Jackson) up!” (Hooked on Magic was vanned off after the race, but I got this from Jesus a few days later - that he is going to be okay, he had cut the front of a wrap all the way through either during the race or in the gates.) Finishing 2nd is Eyes Got Hope, a Circles S Bred son of Mr Eye Opener and out of the stakes winning mare Hope For Me Too, owned and Trained by Gene Cox and ridden by David Brown. Up for third was another gelding bred by Circle S Ranch, Fillemup Phil, this gelding was also a 2010 post race season big ticket item, this year’s owner is Brian Gunder and trained by Paul Martin, Aaron Hunt in the Irons. The remaining order of finish starting with 4th was; Brimmerton Lane, Gypsy Effort, Bright Eyed Vision, Mc Dashin Lil Angel, and Burrs Tic Tac. Hez Rare Too and I Is It were scratched. This was a great race, a head, neck and a nose separated the first four in this race. Congratulations to the connections of all these nice horses.

“Seasons” Old and New

July 31st may have marked the end of the season but everyone is still full speed ahead as Aug. 1st marks the beginning of the 2012 season! Many 2011 Champions have now been crowned yet there are many more anxiously awaiting their state shows to determine State Champions.

National Finals – “Coggins and Health Papers Required” Entry Deadline: Sept. 1st marks the deadline for Early Bird Entries to the 2011 IBRA National Finals!. If you are a State Qualifier you must enter on or before this date to keep your qualifier status! If you’re going to the finals, let your state director know. Some states are getting together and ordering matching shirts. You looked awesome last year!!! Silent Auction Once again this year we will be supporting Sugartree Ministry. Please help support them by bringing an item for our silent auction. National Finals Program Book If you would like to place an ad or just wish your family or friends good luck at the finals, you could WIN A FREE ENTRY. See flyer on the IBRA website at www.ibra.us for more details

Fun Night & Barbeque: IBRA takes pride in the fact that we are a family oriented organization and want all of our members to enjoy the National Finals. Fun Night and the Barbeque are for the kids as well as the adults. There is NO Alcohol permitted at Roberts Arena and this rule will be strictly enforced at this years finals. Because of the growth of fun night, we will be more organized this year to assure no one is left out. A few new exciting games have been added so stay tuned. More details and sign up sheets will be available closer to the date of the finals. The Barbeque last year was the largest ever and we ran out of food. If you would like to bring a covered dish, which has been suggested, that would be appreciated by all. The 2012 IBRA season starts August 1, 2011. If you would like your points to count in your state for the 2012 season, you must join before you compete. Get them in early! Good Luck this season and hope to see you at the Finals! Jack Russel Terrier... ella

Everyone needs a break... After my last report, things got very interesting, to say the least. The new addition at the ranch - now named “Seven” - was fitting in quite nicely. He was getting lots of laughs with his never ending antics and making new friends with some of the horses around the ranch. One of the donkey’s favorite things to do after his arrival was hang out with this particular bay mare. (I think he had a little donkey crush on her.) He followed her around everywhere and it got so bad that when the bay mare was getting ridden by the people, the donkey would follow them through the patterns. While she was galloping for her exercise he would sometimes be right on her heels! One time he was following her so close at a walk, when the person said “Whoa” and the bay mare stopped....Seven didn’t hit the brakes in time and ended up between her back legs! He’s lucky that bay mare was in a good mood that day! “Seven” the mini-donkey has since been forbidden from the arena during training time for the big horses and the bay mare has since went home for a break. Seven has found a new friend to pester when he gets a chance. His new friend is a big sorrel gelding. The sorrel gelding doesn’t mind Seven following him around for the most part, but every now and then he needs a break from the donkey’s aggravating ways.

trip to the lake. They must have some kind of sixth sense and know just the right time to get me out of here before I lose it. When the donkey started chasing cars it almost sent me over the edge and that must have been a great clue for them to get me “outta Dodge” and head south to the lake. I have to say that I really love the lake! To tell you the truth, I think the people kind of like it too. They seem to enjoy themselves while they are entertaining me. I love the peace and quiet, no responsibilities and of course, I’m the only critter that gets to go....so no Aggravating Annie. I like everything including the ride in the car where I get to sit in the middle and watch for critters in the road. The people take me out to ride in the boat and let me lounge on the tube on the water. Then they play around and splash and drive the boat fast, I don’t complain.... the least that I can do is let them have their fun since they make this special trip so I can have some rest. Now that I am rested and rejuvenated.....it’s back to the ranch to try to regain some order. Until next month.... Take A Break.....I did.....

I know how he feels. Sometimes I just need a break from the little black bark box (Princess Annabelle.) That’s when my people take me on a

Recurrent Airway Obstruction (RAO)

Article By Dr. Steve Fisch, DVM

The majority of RAO cases are the result of hypersensitivity in the lungs to inhaled allergens. The most common antigens are dust and molds. Periodic bronchoconstriction will cause an accumulation of mucus and neutrophils. Most of these cases are in horses kept in barns. There is a similar condition in the southern part of the United States that is called summer pasture associated obstructive disease. The condition in these horses usually improves when the horse is stabled because it is usually caused by certain grasses and their seed heads.

Recurrent airway obstruction, otherwise known as heaves, chronic obstructive lung disease, chronic airway disease, etc. is a common respiratory disease which shows signs of bronchospasm, mucous production and an accumulation of cells called neutrophils which indicate infection or inflammation. The main indicator of this disease is a recurrent cough. This cough may express itself as anything from a one or two coughs as the horse starts working to a horse that spends most of the day coughing. The more extreme cases exhibit respiratory difficulty.

ABOVE: The most common antigens are dust and molds. Periodic bronchoconstriction will cause an accumulation of mucus and neutrophils. Most of these cases are in horses kept in barns.

Besides a chronic cough of varying degrees, other signs include nasal discharge and labored expiration of air. Horses with severe cases will have “heave lines”. The heave lines are actually hypertrophied abdominal muscles which assist in pushing air out of the lungs. The reason the lungs need assistance in getting the air out of the lungs versus into the lungs such as in cases of pneumonia, is that the bronchioles are swollen to such an extent that the air is trapped in the bronchioles and alveoli where the exchange of oxygen takes place. The more advanced cases will exhibit flared nostrils and increased respiratory rates. When the lungs are listened to the veterinarian will hear expiratory wheezes in the lungs and there may be a rattle in the trachea from excess mucous. Some horses end up spending so much energy breathing that they actually lose weight. Blood work will many times

be normal u n l e s s there is a secondary bacterial infection. If the case has been fairly long ABOVE: Very visible “heave line.” standing, there will many times be a secondary bacterial infection and that infection will need to be treated with the appropriate antibiotics. The diagnosis is many times based on clinical signs and history of the horse. The most accurate way to diagnose RAO is with bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL). Certain cells such as neutrophils and eosinophils in the BAL are indicators of RAO. A BAL is fairly easy to perform. A special tube is inserted into the lungs and 60 to 200 mls of sterile lactated ringers is infused into the lungs. When the horse coughs the fluid back up it is collected in

The fluid is cultured and the horse is treated with the appropriate antibiotics. Other ways to add to the diagnostic data are thoracic radiographs and ultrasound. However these diagnostic modalities greatly add to the expense and are probably less valuable than history, physical exam and a BAL. The most important treatment by far for RAO is to manage the environment. Many horses will respond very favorably to merely decreasing the amount of mold and dust in the environment. Make sure the shavings are clean and dust free. Round bales can be ABOVE: This is a photo of the division of the bronchi deep in the lungs. major culprits in creating A small amount of mucous is shown. RAO horses. Round bales BELOW: A severe amount of mucous in the trachea. that get any amount of mold in them at all require the horse to put his head directly into the mold and dust and breathe them into his lungs. Hay should be free of dust and if need be the hay should be watered down before feeding. Grain should also be dust free and soaked if needed. Pastures should be kept mowed and as free of weeds and grass that is seeding out as possible. the same tube and evaluated microscopically. This fluid can be cultured but the better way to culture the lungs is with a transtracheal wash (TTW). A TTW is a little more invasive than a BAL because it requires that a small incision be made into the trachea. However the fluid that is obtained is more accurate for culture for infection as it doesn’t pass through the nose but comes straight from the trachea. It is performed with a small amount of sterile fluid being infused into the lungs and collecting what the horse coughs up similar to the BAL.

corticosteroids have the negative side affect of suppressing the immune system and being a possible cause of laminitis. Clenbuterol is expensive and can cause high heart rates and sweating when given at high doses. It is a good bronchodilator however and does not have laminitis causing properties. The aerosol corticosteroids work well in many cases but they require treatment every 4 to 12hours. They are normally effective in mild to moderate cases of RAO and can be used along with systemic therapy in more severe cases. Due to the low bioavailability the aerosolized corticosteroid have less potential for adrenal gland suppression. There are different types of aerosolized corticosteroids so it is good to discuss these with your equine veterinarian and decide which one will work best in your situation. There will usually be a response with most of these treatments within 24 hours but all treatments should be based on an accurate diagnosis and examination by your equine veterinarian. As always an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Always keep your barn, feed and hay as dust free as possible. Early and accurate diagnosis is always better than a delayed diagnosis and treatment. If RAO has gone on in the lungs for some time, the damage and fibrosis in the lungs may be irreversible. RAO is like a snowball. The longer it goes untreated the worse it gets and the more irreversible it becomes. Whenever you have the first inkling that your horse has a respiratory problem, always get it checked out by your equine veterinarian. The initial stages of RAO can prevent a horse from performing to his maximum ability. The advanced stages may prevent him from living.

There are a few treatments for RAO including acupuncture, systemic corticosteroids, clenbuterol, and some aerosolized corticosteroids Stephen D. Fisch, DVM have been used successfully to treat RAO. enim is a classic American staple that will never go out of style. How you wear it is up to you, fall is approaching & the nights are starting to get brisk. Enter the denim jacket; it’s lightweight, breathable & just the right amount of coverage for fall.

But don’t just opt for any plain denim jacket; embrace your style with a jacket from Kowgirl Glitz. Kowgirl Glitz specializes in purses, belts, vests, halters & accessories but I’m just showcasing a few of their many jackets.

Pictures provided by Kowgirl Glitz

One of the most popular designs that Kristin of Kowgirl Glitz makes is this cross design. Dark denim with the tan cross & white cowhide stands out. You can have anything customized to your preference; your brands & logos can be put on the back of a jacket. (Left) Another gorgeous jacket is this horse head embellished with Swarovski crystals on a light cowhide. The stone washed jacket looks great & really stands out. Lighter denim goes great with vintage jewelry pieces. (Right)

Pretty horseshoe pattern with red & flowers all around. Also if you aren’t into putting jackets on just yet, opt for a denim vest, Kowgirl Glitz makes those as well. Vests are great ways to dress up a shirt or sweater. (Left) This peace sign jack on brown & white cowhide is another eye catcher with great contrast. All of the jackets have Swarovski crystals outlining the designs for just the right amount of sparkle. (Left) You can find Kowgirl Glitz online ~ Page 44

Cowboy Boots Of the Month

Photos by Lucchese

’m continuing on with the denim trend for my August cowboy boot of the month. I featured this pair of Women’s Lucchese Stone Washed Denim Boots on Horses & Heels & had such a great response that I knew these were boot of the month quality. You can find these unique boots at Allens Boots in Texas, don’t worry you can order them online if you’re not in the neighborhood. Lucchese is another one of my favorite brands; these boots are always extremely comfortable & made to last. The denim boot is a nice way to transition into fall & this is the best-looking denim boot I have ever seen to date. The slightly frayed edges of denim going up the boot’s shaft meets silver acid wash for an astonishing texture & eye pleasing combination. Of course you can rock these in the barn & while you’re riding but they are too cool not to take out on the town; pair them with a white denim skirt & turn heads.

"Meet the girl behind Horses & Heels" I’m Raquel; I live out there where the city meets the country. One day I’m wearing stilettos, the next day it’s spurs. I have an obsession with cowboy boots, Christian Louboutin, cosmetics and cooking. I have been riding since I was two-years old, have competed in just about every discipline & now I focus on barrel racing. I love speed & athletic horses, not to mention lots of sparkly things.

Horses & Heels is a trendy & practical blog. Keep up with the latest fashion, equestrian trends & learn how to become the perfect kitchen host. While some people deem country life to be dull & boring; Horses & Heels is shattering the myth with a unique intertwining of city & country life. Learn how to keep your horses & yourself dressed to impress.

The stone washed denim toe looks perfect & with not a tan stitch out of place. I think the tops really make the boot, the contrast in silver & denim provides a rustic but modernized look.

The 4-H committee has been working very hard getting a horse show arena built for 2011, and tents have been added for housing of animals giving each visitor the opportunity to check out the many live projects and hard work of the Hamilton County 4-H members. The members of the Hamilton County Equestrian 4-H club will be our balloon setters for the demo.

Indiana Rough Riders Howdy All! There were guns a shootin’, sparks a flyin’ and smoke in the air as IRR hosted their first shoot of the year on July 8, 9, and 10 at Rushville, IN. Friday night was a single point match with Lexi Knauss winning Women’s Overall and Gary Franklin winning Men’s overall. On Saturday it was a dry, hot day but when the dust settled Jeff Haynes was our Men’s Overall Cowboy and Tisha Deckena, Women’s overall Cowgirl. Later on Saturday we ended with fun and games directed by Joyce McKinney. Sunday morning began with Cowboy Church with Randy Coning brining us worship in song and Doug Sheldon delivering an inspirational message. After another hot day of sweatin’ and shootin’, John St Clair was our Men’s Overall Cowboy and Joyce McKinney our Women’s Overall Cowgirl.

Despite the broken bones and illnesses of many of the members in our club, everyone pulled together and made the weekend a success. Already out of the competition before it had started was Kathy McDonald with a fractured arm that she received while putting on a CMSA demonstration and Marsha Butler who fractured her right Femur last month while d is m ounting

her horse. Teresa Todd Woulms Case decided to join the sideline crew (of the sick, the injured and the broken) during Friday night’s competition when her horse reared causing her to roll off, hit the ground and fracture her Clavicle. Rick Deckena was also on the injured list with broken ribs he received from practicing his Roy Roger’s mounting skills. Another member already on the side line was IRR Connie App club president, Bryan McDonald who was unable to attend the entire weekend due to illness. This is where the BIG THANK YOU comes in…. Thanks to one and all IRR members and non members that pitched in and took up the slack to make the weekend the success that is was. I tip my hat to everyone involved. This is what makes CMSA the organization that it is, lending a helping hand no matter what the circumstance. Well that does is for this month. Keep those cylinders a spinin’ and God Bless! Hot...Hot...Hot...Horse Shows Hey Everyone: I had my graduation party and had about 400 people there, what a great time we had.

Now its on to Horse Shows!!!!! Yeah!!! Have showed three weekends in a row - thats a record this year with the weather. Our Indiana State Show was fun got to show and visit with some people I haven’t seen in a while. I ended up Reserve Champion in Youth. (I guess according to Vic I was really riding hard, my cousin Casey was winning before I ran, no competiveness in my family)lol. I won CUTEST LITTLE COWBOY in the Cutest Little Cowboy Contest at the state show, a fundraiser for us youth going to world. I think a few of my buddies dumped their pockets just to see me wear the crown. Thanks again to “Fast” Horse Resource for our t-shirts! All Indiana youth that qualified for world got a T-shirt sponsored by The Fast Horse Resource and Cowpokes/Brandin Iron. I am going to a Youth Barrel Race in Kentucky this weekend then off to Youth World. Congratulations to Jennifer Lichtenbarger for winning the Indiana NBHA Youth 1D championship. You did a great job. Also, get well Jennifer! (She was put in the hospital on Monday after the state show.) And the CUTEST LITTLE COWGIRL IS.......

Alex Ferrell

What is your name? Toni Alexandria Farrell (I go by Alex or Al)

How old are you? 18 yrs old Where did you graduate from? Jennings County High School, North Vernon, IN I know you graduated this year, what are your plans for the fall? I will be attending IUPUC in Columbus, IN Undecided major at this time Parents: Tony & Cheryl Farrell Siblings: Ethan Farrell How long have you been riding horses? 13 years What are your horses name and tell me about them? (name, age, breeding, any quirks they have, who trained them) 1) DeeDees Cash- AQHA mare- 11 yrs oldShe does not like her face touched-she’s better

Page 48

than she was when I got her though. She loves the water-she will go out in our pond and roll and play around. 2) BeduinosSweetCiclone- AQHA gelding 7 yrs old- Todd Holder trained and rode him in futurities. I’ve only had him 2 years-we are just getting together. I absolutely love him because he is just a gentle giant. 3) Smokin Panti Lynx- AQHA mare- 15 yrs old- Smokin’s biggest quirk is when someone new rides her-she will test them. I sold her

just a week ago and miss her a lot. I wanted to include her because I have been riding her this season and I had her about 7 years. She always gives 150% everytime she enters the pen. I found riding 3 was just too hard. Who got you started barrel racing? who is your mentor? The Smith family-they moved onto my mom’s bus route. I saw they had horses and asked what they did with them. Barrel racing is all I ever wanted to do. I

TEEN CORRAL w/Clint Van would say the most important mentor would be Lynde Doup. I was in 3rd grade and joined 4H. She had horses and helped me during those years. I bought my first barrel pony in 2003. Sammy had actually been Donovan Smith’s pony-so I knew the pony. He taught me a lot. How did you do at the Indiana State Show? I placed 6th in 2nd Division in Youth. I was pleased with all my runs. What district do you ride in? IN04 Describe the moment when you won Cutest Little Cowgirl? (lol) I was really embarrassed! However, I’m glad this contest will help the kids running for Indiana at the Youth World. What is your favorite horse show and why? Youth World in Jackson, Mississippi. I enjoy getting away from home and meeting new people from all over. What are some of your other hobbies? I like hanging with my friends. We play volleyball, corn hole, ride 4-wheelers, just have a good time.

Blue Mustang GT. I absolutely love it! How many years have you been going to youth world? What is some of your favorites at youth world? 7 years. All the trips have been good, but the best was when I finally made it back to the finals in 2009. If I don’t get in, we usually head home that night and go to Carrollton, KY to race. What are your accomplishments in barrel racing? I have won 1st place in 4D, 1st in 2D the last 3 years, and 4th in 1D in youth for IN04. I have also placed in open for several years. I’ve won belt buckles, breast collars, and halters. Any advice to fellow barrel racers? Perseverance- never quit! You have to keep your eye on where you want to go and never give up if you love it! Hope everyone is having a great summer. Until next time, TURN AND BURN!!!

CLINT

For graduation I know you got a new car, tell us about this car? (year, color, etc.) I have wanted a mustang since I was a little girl and I can finally say I have one! It’s a 2007

His parents are Terrie VanVolkenburgh and respectively Joe Trentman. He has grown up in the horse world, both parents have rode almost all their life...Clint's grandfather as some of you may remember was the late Terry VanVolkenburgh, who would run up and down the fences when his daughters would run barrels. Clint began barrel racing at the age of 4 with a pony, then went on to particpate in Jr. Rodeo and his favorite event was the sheep riding, had to believe he is now a barrel racer. He has won the Ohio Youth NBHA and Indiana Youth and Open NBHA , he has also won the congress youth barrel four times, and was runner up in the Congress Sweepstakes, placed at Josey Jr. world numerous times, and won the NBHA Youth World 1d in 2006. He loves to barrel race and is now trying his hand at the futurities. In Clint's spare time he mows grass for a part time job and is also very active in his church where he and his cousins are bible school helpers. Clint also volunteers one day a week at a school in Cincinatti where he spends time tutoring other kids in reading.

and Doreen Lloyd and Dale and Caren Thomas for putting together the rodeo at LaPorte! Please find our Facebook page under IJRA Indiana Junior Rodeo Association so you may support our rodeo sponsors that have supported our IJRA cowboys and cowgirls this year. Our sponsors are very important to our association and we are very thankful for all they do for IJRA. Make sure follow us next month when we feature Team Indiana and their trip to Gallup, New Mexico for the Cinch Division National Finals!

T

his month’s spotlight shines on the Morris family from Cicero, Indiana. David and Amy Morris have 3 great kids, three of which are currently members of IJRA. Their family has been involved in IJRA for 6 years and they continue to play an important part in our association. Amy and David have run the Preschool rodeo in the past and David presently leads the Cowboy Church service for us on Sunday mornings and does a wonderful job leading our prayer during our Grand Entry. The Morris family is always full of positive encouragement for all of the IJRA cowboys and cowgirls. IJRA would like for you to meet the Morris family and see what they have to say about what IJRA means to them.

Cooper

The Morris Family

Emma

Cade

Cooper (10 years old): The rodeo is part of my life, I love it. I love all the people that have helped me get to where I am. I chute dog and rope calves. I love both events a lot. I try to be as good as I can in each event, it’s the only sport I do. I’ve been a member of IJRA for five years, I started as a preschooler and joined the association my kindergarten year. This is my fourth grade season. Emma (8 years old): I really like the chance to do something I couldn’t do anywhere else, like chute dogging, it’s usually for boys, but I can do it too. My pony’s name is Weapon, she’s 30 years old and has been rodeoing most of her life. I love weaving the poles on her because she’s really smooth. Going fast in barrels is pretty fun too. I love seeing my friends and spending time with my family. Rodeo weekends are special to me. I’ve been in IJRA 3 years, this is my second grade season. I started as a preschooler. Cade (6 years old): I really like sheep riding and chute dogging, I’m pretty small, but I can still ride a sheep and get a calf down if I do it right. I like the quality time with my family at the rodeo, too. I like it most when my Mammaw comes to see me, she’s a really good mammaw! This is my first season as an IJRA member, I’m a kindergartner this year, I was in preschool rodeo for 2 years. Amy & David: As a family of seven we appreciate the IJRA for what it offers as a sport and hobby. There aren’t many clubs or associations that offer something for the whole family. Our children range from almost two years old up to ten years old and each one of them can participate in IJRA events - Preschool rodeo for the little ones and progressive age groups for the older children. All the events are held in the same location on the same days so we don’t have to split the family on weekends or weeknights to get everyone to their events. We love that! Beyond the convenience and variety of events, we most appreciate the skill crafting, encouragement, and integrity of the IJRA. Our children have always received a lot of help from the IJRA Officers, board members and members in general. Anytime one of our children is having a difficult time perfecting their skills, there’s always someone willing to help. We feel like we have a huge extended family and everyone knows everyone and genuinely cares for everyone. It’s like small town values that move from rodeo to rodeo.

CHRISTIAN COWBOY COLLECTION w/ Christa Conway I Couldn’t Have Written It Better Myself Psalm 37:4-7 4Delight thyself also in the LORD: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. 5Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.

The first portion of that scripture is used so often without the second portion being considered.....the “commit thy way unto the Lord“ portion. I can’t say that I always commit my ways to the Lord.... but I try to find look for him in most every circumstance that I find myself. I tend to ask...”Where is God going with this?” or “What I am supposed to learn from this?” If I ask those questions long enough, I can usually look back and see where God was working throughout a situation. And it is almost ALWAYS when I look back and break things down after a resolution comes to pass that I can see in hindsight what it was all about....what I was supposed to “Get” or “Learn” from it.

W

aiting.....I’ve written about it before. It seems like that is the hardest thing for people to do in this day and age. We want it “NOW!” Drive thrus, instant messaging, smart phones that can answer almost any question you have via the internet in less than a minute.....what do we want that we can’t get yesterday? Is there anything left to ask for that we can’t get somehow, someway and right now? Oh yes.....there is....and our instant society is what makes the wanting and waiting all the more hard to deal with....for us and even more for our children. This month I have decided to discuss waiting....waiting and praying..... and about God even answering what may seem like selfish prayers. Our Father in Heaven does give us the desires of our hearts....if we are seeking him in all circumstances. The waiting might become a little easier if we realize that we can have the picture perfect ending to our story in a week instead of a mediocre version in a day. The difference in the two outcomes relies on where you put God in the mix.......are you trying to be the author....or would you like to turn the pen over to him?

Last & most important thought… Salvation is a gift and a choice...... Jesus died on the cross as the final sacrifice. When He was resurrected on the 3rd day, he defeated Satan for us. All we have to do is believe that He beat death and acknowledge it with our words. If we believe that and accept Him as our personal savior…we are promised eternal life with Him in Heaven. You can’t earn your way into Heaven; you have to believe your way there. So many people think they “aren’t good enough” to get to Heaven… But… Salvation is a GIFT from God and you don’t earn a gift. Gifts are something someone gives to you and for the gift to be yours, you have to accept it. All we have to do is accept that wonderful gift. I know I have…won’t you?

Page 56

The most important thing I think we can remember when we are praying about something we “want” is that God knows what is best for us. If you find yourself in a position where a decision needs to be made and you just don’t know the answer....Pray for God’s will. What I find interesting is that the closer I get to the Lord....the more inline my prayers are with what his word shows me. I suppose it only makes sense that if we are seeking him and commiting our ways to him......that we will find ourselves desiring what he wants for us ....... and soon “the desires of our hearts” become ours. Proverbs 3:5-6 5Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Waiting....praying......waiting......praying.....if we pray for God’s will in our life.....if we trust in God for what we really need....if we ignore our own “understanding” and look beyond earthly boundaries.....if we acknowledge him in ALL circumstnaces (good or bad)....if we realize he is WORKING ON US and directing us to his will.....if we commit our ways to him.....trust in him....he’ll bring our desires in line with his will. The ending will be way better than you’d ever expect. He guarantees it.

Until next month.... Wait.....Pray.....Trust....Commit.... Happy Trails & God Bless! Christa But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. Romans 5:15 For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Romans 10: 9-10

On the Trail

By Brother Brad Curtis of Mountain Top Cowboy Church

THE RISING SON Pete stepped out of the saddle Knelt to watch the sun rise Looked at his pony Smoke Then he closed his eyes

If Smokes stumbles on a rock I think of the corner stone The rock of my foundation And thank Him for this roan

But Lord every morning` When the sun rises in the sky I think of your only Son Who saved a sinner such as I

Said Lord thanks for today And this western sky above There is beauty all around That shows your grace and love

When I get off the trail Yep the narrow way A cactus will remind me There is a price to pay

He was put on that cross Died and put in another’s grave But He is a rising Son And I’m no longer sins slave

As I watch the herd Under the stars at night My heart is always thankful There will be the morning light

The coyotes singing Is a reminder too An enemy is out there Who was defeated by you

Yep Lord every morning` When the sun rises in the sky I’m thankful for your grace And your son that came to die

When I see a mountain Or grass, green and knee high It reminds me you’re up there Watchin` from the sky

There are times I’ll see a snake Slithering in the sand I was once like him Before I came to The Brand

Psalms 19:1 The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. By: Bro. Brad Curtis, Vilonia, AR Copyright 2011

s ’ a r d n Rodeo with a Winning Attitude oke Ke

Cowp

This month I decided to write about Rodeo with a Winning Attitude. I hear a lot of negative things from people and thought this would hopefully help people out.

Having a great attitude when you are rodeoing is always a good thing. It can get very hard out on the road. Traveling down the road to achieve your goals can get frustrating because you can’t win them all! I’ve traveled to a lot of rodeos this year (maybe not as many as some people, but for it’s been a lot for me.) I have decided that even if I don’t place at all of them, its OK! I have won and placed at rodeos this year and I’m very happy with my accomplishments so far. I used to get upset because I didn’t place or I knocked a barrel down....but I don’t anymore. After talking to some of the barrel racers in the top 15 in the IPRA(International Professional Rodeo Association), I found out that they estimate to place at only 25% of the rodeos where they compete. Of course I always thought they placed at more than that. You know what..... those I spoke to all have great winning attitudes. You should never give up. Always believe in yourself. Keep trying. Most people give up and never achieve their goals when they are right on the edge of.......THIER DREAM! Before I get ready to run, I get very nervous. I say to myself and my horse “Do your best and forget the rest.” But many people have emotions running through their head....always thinking what might go wrong or

Page 59

what other people may think. I’ve learned not to worry about what my go wrong and who cares what others think. If you start to think negative thoughts, change your thoughts and think about how good it will turn out. “ Its mental toughness that gets you to the pay window.” If you want to succeed at something, you have to believe that you can succeed. Be positive and always strive for your goals in life, take charge of your attitude, believe in yourself, be confident and calm under pressure. Most importantly, do what you love with a good winning attitude, because life is too short not to “Live Life To The Fullest!” Here is a little something extra I wanted to add that President Roosevelt once said...... To Those Who Dare to Be Better: “Its not the critics who count, not the man that points out how the strong man stumbled or where the doer of deeds could have done better. The credit belongs to the man who is competing in the arena, whose face is marred with dust, sweat, who strives valiantly, who errs and comes up short again and again, who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions, and spends himself in a worthy cause; who, at the best, knows triumph of achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, who knows that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat.”

Kendra Gilbreath grew up showing cattle and sheep and eventually made her way into the rodeo arena as a barrel racer. She is married to her husband, Steve, and they have one son, Kolton. Kendra has worked in the Western Retail Business for most of her adult life and enjoys keeping with the hottest styles in western wear. She is currently a Manager and a Buyer for Cowpokes Work and Western Store in Anderson, IN and helps in keeping the hottest trends and styles in clothing, boots and western wear on the store showroom floor.

We need our mysteries solved! These two mysteries have gone unsolved....email or call with your answer and win!

July’s Mystery..... ......We Need A Winner!

Last month’s Mystery Family Photo was taken in the mid 60s (we think.) We’ll need as much information as we can on this picture. Help us out with names of people and horses, as well as location. This family remains very active in both the barrel racing AND horse racing world to date. There is a good possibility that you may even see some of the family this month at Hoosier Park or at a barrel race. Correctly identify our mystery cowboy the two cowgirls accompanying him. Give us as much information as possible to win your choice of a one year subscription to The Horse Resource, a “Horsey Hat” or a “Horsey-T.” Please send us your photos from the past.... we’d like to use them in our Mystery of the Month. Horses, people, events, etc... Send via email to: thehorseresource@msn.com or mail to The Horse Resource 12601 S CR 200 W Muncie, IN 47302 We will return your original photos to you.

June’s Mystery a Tough One..... ......We Need A Winner! June’s Mystery Cowboy is shown in the first picture turning a barrel at a show somewhere in Ohio. We are not sure of the location, maybe you can help us with that portion of our mystery. The inset shows him picking up a second place ribbon at the same show. The year was approximately 1966. This cowboy and his wife met showing the horses and continued to show horses at contesting events and rodeos and had a son who followed in their footsteps. Recently they are enjoying their grandchildren and you may run into them at a barrel race together. Email us or call with your answer and you could be our June winner!

Do You Still Like Playing? Help Us Out..... We are running low on photos.....Please send us your older photos of horsemen and women (and kids) that are still active in the horse business today. Or if you have pictures of a well known horse or event....that will mix things up a bit. We’re up for some new mysterys if you are!! Keep sending us those photos!! Send via email to thehorseresource@msn.com or mail to 12601 S CR 200 W Muncie, IN 47302 Page 67
