LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

I

t’s looking like this may go down as one of the hottest and driest summer’s our part of the country has seen in a long time. With multiple days reaching well over 100 degrees and little to no rain for many areas around us, it may be a long winter for those who don’t have their hay purchased already. Hay and grain crops have suffered and we’re certain to feel the repercussions come winter. We’d like to hear what you are doing to prepare for the possible increase in feed and hay. Send us an email and we may include it in a future issue of The Horse Resource. Other than the dusty hot weather, it’s been busy around here at the barn. I can say that the pool is getting it’s fair share of attention this year as well. It seems that after the chores are finished we all want to go for a dip. (And sometimes we all jump in once or twice in the midst of doing chores.) I know the horses have enjoyed their fans and an occasional spray down to cool them off. You’ll notice we have included some foal pictures that were sent in by our readers. If you don’t see your picture, watch for it next month. We are still accepting foal pictures to be included on the “Babies” page. Send them to us at thehorseresource@msn.com. Until next month.........stay cool....put back some hay for winter and remember to count your blessings on horseback!

God Bless and Ride Safe, Christa Conway

A Little “Barrel Talk” Here’s a portion of a Hot topic on Barrel Horse World’s Barrel Talk.....Enjoy! Trailer unloading outrundaizy Posted 2012-07-19 9:28 AM (#6394462) Elite Veteran Posts: 668 Do you let your horses turn around or back out? My horses have always backed out, but my new horse has always been turned around and if you even make him think about backing up he goes into full panic mode. The thing is, its not easy to let a horse turn around in my trailer and he only can turn around when he’s in the first spot. The second, maybe he could but im not gonna try, and the third is just not possible, so how would you teach a horse thats so use to turning around to back out? could I just practice loading him in the third spot and make him back out on his own. Idk what else I would do without getting myself hurt. PaintedPrincess Expert Posts: 2829 The gelding i have now, when i first started riding him for his old owner, she never mentioned that he doesnt back off a trailer, so we hauled over 3 hours to a race, he was in the last slot, it took 5 people to get him off the trailer, he was smart enough to not try to turn around, but he just refused to go back, so we ended up having to drag him out with a lunge line after 2 hours of trying to coax him off. I did alot of backing up with him on the ground, and in the saddle, when i haul locally i hall in a 2 horse straight load, so he had to learn to back off, took him a few times to figure it out, now he backs off like its no big deal. When you aren’t going to a race, just hook up your trailer and load him, and let him back off in his own time the first couple of times, no pressure, i know from experience that getting to a barrel race and then having to worry about how your going to get the horse off, adds too much pressure to the horse and can make the situation worse, so pick a day when your not going anywhere, and practice. Load him half way into the trailer, and then back him off a few times, then load him up completely and ask him to step off one step at a time, nice a slow, and don’t put too much pressure on him to do so right away. Three 4 Luck Accident Prone Posts: 13513 Location: AR My yearling loaded super easy in a trailer until the day I decided it was time to learn to back out. I haven’t gotten her in one since. Scared her to death and she doesn’t want any part of it. We have taken a break for a few months, hoping she will “forget” and be willing to learn to load again. My trailer has blocked axles, so it sits up high and is a BIG step--I should have waited until she was older and bigger to teach her to back off, I guess.

Page 4

CaughtYawl GRD’s Fan Club Advisior Posts: 6524 Location: Texas All except one of mine at the moment back off. The other one will learn eventually. I didn’t know she didn’t back out till I bought her and hauled her home in the middle hole of a 6’ wide 3 horse trailer. She’s 16 hands and lanky but turned herself right around in there after a couple hours trying to get her to back out. All of my trailers are 7’6” to 8 wide so unless I just don’t put her in the back slot. I’ll let all of mine turn around and walk out of the step up trailer.. Or the one with the ramp if it’s wet. Shorty1 Member Posts: 15 I have a mare that i absoultely will not back out of the trailer..if you try she comes out wide open, but she doesnt stop once she gets going. We just put her in the front stall of the trailer and swing the slant open and get out of her way so she can turn around. If you let her turn around she will just turn around fast and then stops and waits for you to lead her out. Not sure what happened to her as a colt (ive had her for 6 years and new the guy that owned her b4 me and she was like that when he got her), but shes been like this for 10 years and it doesn’t matter how much we work with her nothing helps. I was always taught not to fix what isn’t broken so we just deal with this quirk and work around it. It keeps her happy and definitely keeps me safe and happy. suzy2qtee Extreme Veteran Posts: 460 I agree with the poster that said to work on backing on the ground.... Alot of backing... I have even set up plywood and had them back off of it.... and down small slopes... I have a pond **** that I’ll back down... So the horse gets used backing down... Fairweather Twin Sister to Queen Boobie Posts: 9407 Location: TN I’d start backwards by re-teaching him how to load. Ask for one foot on and that same foot off a million times until he’s completely comfortable with it. If he wants to put more than one foot on, don’t let him. Then ask for two feet on and off a million times, then three --- by the time you get to the 4th foot he’s already backed off 4 million times. Another thing too is that when you back those feet off, don’t just let him put them on the ground -- back him up at least 3-4 steps each time --- or more. That reinforces that they’re supposed to back when you ask them to come off. I agree -- I’d work on his backing off the trailer as well pri-

or to all this if he’s sticky on the ground. I want them light enough that I can just step into them and they back up. I don’t want to have to pull on them. Rolling J Elite Veteran Posts: 951 Location: Eastern OH but my heart is in WV I might be an odd ball here but 90% of the time, I walk mine off forward. I have a 3 horse Exiss slant. The horses in the first two stalls have no problem turning. I do make each one stop and wait before stepping off, each and every time. I also, from time to time, make everyone back off because I am always afraid there might be that situation in which they HAVE to back off. tl2748 Veteran Posts: 105 Location: Texas I have a stock trailer so it is no big deal for my horses to turn in it. However all my horses will ride backwards anyway. They turn themselves around in the trailer when we haul so when we get some where they are already to walk straight out. With that said if I haul with someone that has dividers and such they will back out of the trailer fine also. I agree you need to just hook the trailer up sometime and just slow work your horse in and out of the trailer LOTS of times. Don’t get upset or frustrated during either cause the horse will feed off that. If you have access to a stock type trailer you may try that also it gives them more room to see around themself backing out instead of feeling like they are backing into a hole. Maybe back up to a hill area also if the STEP OFF is what the horse is not likeing and then slowly pull the trailer forward as she gets better and more use to a bigger drop. You can also probably find some video of Clinton Anderson on youtube about working with trailering horses. He always seems to have good calm ideas that wrok for everyone. Good luck and sorry for how long this is. total performance Namesless in BHW Posts: 5481 Location: Oklahoma I agree -- I’d work on his backing off the trailer as well prior to all this if he’s sticky on the ground. I want them light enough that I can just step into them and they back up. I don’t want to have to pull on them. Yep!!! Repetition on backing. Ground work and go from there.

Summer Quarter Horse Meet Opens Aug. 15 - First Summer Night Racing Card Aug. 18; Twelve-Day Season Features Eight Stakes Worth $410,000 NEW ORLEANS (Tuesday, July 17, 2012) - Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots will present the first summer night racing program in track history on Aug. 18, a Saturday. Fair Grounds’ fifth Summer Quarter Horse Meet opens Aug. 15 and continues Wednesdays to Saturdays through Sept. 1.

MISSOURI STATE NBHA CHAMPION SPOTLIGHT - Danielle Lichte Danielle Lichte, 2012 NBHA Missouri State 1D Champion is just 11 years old but what a list of accomplishments she already has stacked up. Danielle started riding at the age of 5 years old. She started her riding career in youth rodeo where she competes in barrel racing, pole bending, breakaway roping, goat tying, trail course, and ribbon roping. Her very first horse was a 30 year old rescue grade gelding named Duster but soon she graduated up to her second horse which she still competes on today. He is an AQHA gelding named “Hotshot” who the family bought as a 4 yr old (Danielle was just 5 at the time). Danielle taught him barrels and poles herself. Pictures provided by Missouri NBHA - © Fessler Photo

Danielle’s horse that she won the state title on is a 9 year old AQHA gelding named My Polish SpeedBuggy who her family purchased in March of 2012 from Julie and Adam Klejeski of Barnum, MN who they keep in contact with, including the day of the finals. Julie and Adam raised “SpeedBuggy”. Danielle is only the second person to ever run him. When Julie and Adam’s daughters, Rayna and Riata, started riding competively, Julie knew she wouldn’t be able to give them and SpeedBuggy the attention they deserve. Therefore deciding to sell and choose a new owner for SpeedBuggy was very challenging and heart breaking (although they knew it was best for him). SpeedBuggy is truly a very special horse to everyone who has touched him. His kind, affectionate personality fits perfectly with Danielle and the other horses in the family. Accomplishments include: • 2008 CYRA and MYRA all around saddles • 2009 MBRA all around saddle • 2011 NBHA MO-01 reserve youth 1D champion • Qualified for NLBRA finals for the past 3 years winning many, many buckles • 2012 NBHA Missouri State Finals 1D Champion Current memberships include: • NBHA • BBR • MKYRA • NLBRA

First post is 12:40 p.m. every day except Aug. 18, when first post is 4 p.m. That evening, Fair Grounds will present two special events - the inaugural “Tails & Ales” beer tasting featuring scores of offerings from breweries throughout the region and two special races pitting animals not normally associated with racing. Details on the Aug. 18 events, including ticketing and pricing, will be announced later this week. General admission for live racing is FREE every day except Aug. 18. Average daily overnight purses of $140,000 are complemented by a rich stakes schedule worth $410,000, with added-money events scheduled on half of the racing days. The stakes action kicks off with the 350-yard Treme Stakes for Louisiana-bred 3-year-olds on Aug. 16. The meet’s richest day is Closing Day, Sept. 1, with three stakes, topped by the $150,000 (estimated) Louisiana Quarter Horse Breeders Association Sales Futurity for 2-year-old Louisiana-breds. The trials for that event will comprise the Opening Day program on Aug. 15. The American Quarter Horse, known as “The World’s Fastest Athlete” for short bursts of speed that can reach as high as 55 miles per hour, competes at sprint distances from 220 yards to 870 yards. PDF files of the 2012 Summer Quarter Horse Meet Condition Book, Stakes Schedule and Stall Application can be downloaded from the “Horsemen” page of the Fair Grounds website at FairGroundsRaceCourse.com. 2012 Summer Quarter Horse Meet At a Glance • Aug. 15-Sept. 1, Wednesdays to Saturdays (12 days) • First post 12:40 p.m. daily (except Aug. 18, 4 p.m.), 10 races every day (except Aug. 18, 11 races) • Free Grandstand general admission (except Aug. 18) • Food and beverage specials: $1.75 hamburgers and $1.75 draft beer at Oaks Grill (Grandstand third floor) More info: (504) 944-5515 or FairGroundsRaceCourse.com About Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots, the nation’s third-oldest racetrack, has been in operation since 1872. Located in New Orleans, Fair Grounds is owned by Churchill Downs Incorporated (NASDAQ Global Select Market: CHDN); it also operates a slot-machine gaming facility and 10 off-track betting parlors throughout southeast Louisiana. The fourth Summer Quarter Horse Meet runs August 15 through September 1. The 141st Thoroughbred Racing Season runs Thanksgiving Day, November 22, through March 31, 2013, highlighted by the milestone 100th running of the $1 million Louisiana Derby for Kentucky Derby hopefuls on March 30, 2013. News American Horse Council Recognizes Kentucky Equine Leader with National Award Lexington, KY, July 2, 2012 – On June 26, 2012, the American Horse

Council awarded Madelyn Millard of Lexington, Kentucky the prestigious national Van Ness Award. Millard is former president and current board member of the Kentucky Horse Council. The Van Ness award honored her accomplishments while President of the Kentucky Horse Council in “increasing awareness, generating interest, and raising the visibility of the horse industry through educational programs and related events.” Presentation of the award took place at the annual American Horse Council Issues Conference in Washington, D.C.. Jay Hickey, Executive Director of the American Horse Council, presented the award. Millard, owner of a multiple discipline horse boarding facility, joined the Kentucky Horse Council in 2005 and was elected President in 2006. While president, she implemented a wide range of new equine programs to benefit the industry. Some of those programs include: Horse welfare training for Animal Control Officers, establishment of a U.S. Equine Disaster Fund, establishment of a networking venue for equine professionals, and implementation of a weekly “Kentucky Horse News” enews for all horsemen, among others. Millard said of the award, “I am honored to have received the Van Ness award; it adds to the reward which comes from seeing the effect that these programs have had on our Kentucky horse industry and the individual Kentucky horse itself. We are blessed in Kentucky with a diverse horse industry, and I was glad to play a part in keeping it strong.”

Jay Hickey of the American Horse Council commented on this year’s selection of the Van Ness award, “This year we had a number of qualified nominees, but Madelyn stood out as clearly eligible for this recognition. We encourage strong Horse Council leaders across the country, and Madelyn embodies this ideal in both her passion for the industry and her leadership skills.” At the American Horse Council conference, Millard was also elected as Chair of the Coalition of State Horse Councils, a national alliance of 38 State Horse Councils which are members of the American Horse Council. Indiana Horse Racing Commission Chairman McNaught retires; Diener appointed Sarah McNaught announced that she will end her service as Chairman of the Indiana Horse Racing Commission, effective July 2, 2012. McNaught shared her decision to step down at the June 25, 2012 Indiana Horse Racing Commission meeting. Her term was set to expire in September of 2014. Governor Mitch Daniels has tapped William Diener to replace McNaught as chairman of the Commission. McNaught served as chairman of the Commission for seven years. During McNaught’s term, the Commission established “Integrity ’06”, an initiative to ensure greater compliance with the Commission’s rules by enhancing deterrents and improving the ability to detect specific integrity-based regulation violations, and engender greater confidence of racing patrons nationwide in Indiana’s pari-mutuel horse racing. The Commission also established comprehensive out-of-competition testing rules while McNaught was chairman and was the first state in the United States to adopt the Racing Commissioners International (“RCI”) model rule regulating anabolic steroids. “It was indeed a great honor to serve in Governor Daniels’ administration, as we on the Commission tried to uphold the highest standards of safety and integrity for the sport,” McNaught said. Diener is an attorney who practiced at Ice Miller, LLC until his retirement. His practice focused on the representation of regulated industries, including horse racing and riverboat gambling. Mr. Diener received the Chairman’s Award from the Indiana Horse Racing Commission in 2007. He currently resides in Indianapolis and volunteers for IPS No. 42 and the Pendleton Correctional Facility. “I am honored Governor Daniels appointed me to serve as Chair of one of the finest commissions in the State of Indiana, and which Commission, under the guidance of Executive Director Joe Gorajec, is a model for other state horse racing commissions in North America,” Diener said. “I am at the same time humbled, knowing the very high bar which the immediate past Chair has set, but I pledge my best to ensure integrity and safety in the pari-mutuel industry.” Diener received his bachelor’s degree from Wabash College, his law degree from Indiana University, his master’s degree in English literature from Butler University, and his master’s degree in law from George Washington University. Diener’s first meeting likely will be scheduled for August. His term will expire in September of 2014. In addition to the newly appointed chairman, the Commission consists of the following members: Jason Barclay, Doug Grimes, Jim Lauck, and Steve Schaefer. The members of the Commission are appointed to four-year terms. No more than three members of the Commission can be from the same political party.

ing forbidden substances rules and penalties. We are currently working with the lab and DBPR to make sure the testing levels are up to industry standards. Quarter Horse racing is a growing and popular sport in Florida and across the country and it will continue to grow and prosper as we all work together to make sure our sport and industry is safe and free of forbidden medications. Good breeding, good nutrition and good training will rule the day. Our good trainers and owners are demanding a clean and safe racing environment and we intend to do our part to provide for that request. Thanks again for all the support each of you have given FQHRA and QH racing in Florida over the last several years. It has been a lot of work but I think most everyone agrees it has been worth it. The best is yet to come. We hope to see you in December.

Jim Shoemake Elected AHC Chairman From www.horsecouncil.org 07/10/2012 - Jim J. Shoemake, past President

of the American Quarter Horse Association and senior partner in the St. Louis law firm of Guilfoil, Petzall & Shoemake, L.L.C., was elected chairman of the Board of Trustees of the American Horse Council (AHC) at the AHC’s annual meeting in Washington, DC on June 26. The AHC represents the horse industry before Congress and the federal regulatory agencies in Washington. Shoemake and his wife Rita own a farm near Farmington, Missouri and have been involved in breeding and raising registered American Quarter Horses for many years. He received his undergraduate degree from Washington University and is a graduate of St. Louis University School of Law. Shoemake is Chairman of the Board of Directors of Lindenwood University, founded in 1827, and serves on the boards of a number of other charitable and not-for-profit entities, including the American Quarter Horse Association, the Urological Research Foundation, and the Missouri Quarter Horse Association. Shoemake succeeds Russell Williams, Vice Chairman of the United States Trotting Association. “We are very fortunate to have Jim as the Chair of the AHC,” said AHC president Jay Hickey. “His broad background in the horse industry, his legal skills, and his legislative experience when he worked in the U.S. Department of Justice will be great assets to the organization.” “I appreciate the confidence the AHC has shown in me by electing me chair. We have some difficult issues before Congress and several agencies, but we will continue to protect the horse industry,” said Shoemake. Dr. Jerry Black, past President of the American Association of Equine Practitioners, was elected AHC vice chair. Dr. Black received his undergraduate and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Colorado State University. He is presently the Wagonhound Land and Livestock Chair and Director of Undergraduate Programs in Equine Sciences at Colorado State University. Dr. Black recently completed two terms on the Executive Committee of the National Cutting Horse Association. He also owns Valley Oak Ranch, a stallion station, with his wife Melinda. “Both Jim and Jerry have been AHC Trustees for some time. They know the issues the AHC must deal with and will step right into their new roles,” said Hickey.

Sundays and Mondays are the dark days at Hoosier Park, racing every Tuesday thru Saturday, with Quarter Horse Racing on Friday, Saturday and Tuesday. There is training on every day except Sunday!! Post time on Tuesday – Friday is 5:30 p.m. and post time on Saturday is 12:30 p.m.. Training is going great so far at the track, gates are out and the track is good. The first QH races are August 3rd and 4th with the trials for the Stallion Service Auction Futurity and Derby!! This is a huge Stakes filled meet, so get ready for some great racing!! Take a look at the photos from the stakes and events we had on QH Day at Indiana Downs!! I want to give a personal thanks to everyone who helped to make that day a huge success. It takes a ton of people helping to be able to get so many exciting things done in one day!! And a huge congratulations to the Stakes Winners!! Thanks again to the QHRAI Board of Directors, Indiana Downs Track Management and staff, Racing Office Staff and every other QH fan who helped make the day a great success. I always hate to see the meet end at Indiana Downs because that means the year of racing here is half over, but I look forward to starting up again at Hoosier Park and all the activities we have in the fall. Quarter Horse Day at Hoosier Park is October 13th. Hold that date. Post time on Saturday is 12:30p.m.. You won’t want to miss all the fun of the day, and the dinner that QHRAI is hosting after the races. grounds in New Castle. The deadline for getting your contracts mailed in is September 9th, so start thinking about what horses you might want to put in the sale this year. And if you don’t have horses to sell, think about how many you want to buy? Did you read the update about the graduate from last year’s sale? How many WH Johnnie Boy Red’s will be in the sale this year? QHRAI is dedicated to make this year’s sale better than ever. Watch QHRAI.net for dates and times of board meetings in August, September and October. Because we have live racing on Tuesday nights, we will not be having our board meetings on Tuesday. They will be the first Wednesday (following the first Tuesday) of every month at 6:00 pm. If there are any changes, they will be posted on QHRAI.net. Speaking of the website, we will be rolling out a new website “design” in the very near future thanks to the hard work of Dianne Bennett and Christa Conway. It’s not there yet, but it won’t be long!! Thanks Dianne and Christa!! There is going to be a Trainers Education Seminar sponsored by the Indiana Horse Racing Commission this fall. The seminar is tentatively scheduled for the morning of October 14, 2012 at Swifty Farm in Seymour. More details will follow. If you haven’t gotten your workers compensation paper work turned in yet, don’t delay. The IHRC has sent out letters for anyone who is still out of compliance. If you have questions, please contact the IHRC. Best of luck too everyone as we quick off the Hoosier Park Meet!! Stay safe and see you at the track!! Michelle Collins QHRAI Executive Director

QHRAI AND QUARTER HORSE FANS REALLY KNOW HOW TO HAVE FUN!! June 30th was a huge event for QHRAI and Quarter Horse fans in Indiana!! In edition to a full card of Quarter Horse races including 5 stakes with purses totalling over half a million dollars, we managed to fit some other activities in the day!!

The day was kicked off with a picnic sponsored by QHRAI and Indiana Downs. The band “Down Shift” provided entertainment the crowd.

Guests took tours, courtesy of great Indiana Downs folks, to the “backside” to see where horses are stalled, receiving barn, test barn and other features of the track.

Lead Singer from the band Down Shift sang the National Anthem as the gate crew salutes the American Flag.

Chris Duke, QHRAI President and Jen Perkins, AQHA “Racing Ace” discussed thier handicap picks with the crowd during the picnic. Free betting vouchers were given to anyone who had questions asked. Rumor has it that Chris out handicapped Jen, maybe his inside connections gave him a slight advantage!! Page 18

Johnnie Jamison, Head Starter, explains the process of getting a horse ready to break from the starting gates and gives the crowd an up close look of the huge metal gates!! QHRAI directors Ron Haynes and Butch Yike threw T Shirts to the crowd in between races to anxious spectators!! Some were happy with their catches!!

There was a large crowd all day and night watching horses in the paddock and on the apron watching the races.

QHRAI News QUARTER HORSE DAY CONT’D Everyone was invited to a Pizza Party sponsored by QHRAI and Indiana Downs after the races where Jon and Janie Schuster were among those who served pizza to our fans. Mike and Mary Jo Renihan passed out American flags to help celebrate!!

Who is that masked man?? er.... Rabbit??? Visitors saw a different kind of racing from a 4 legged animal... "Weiner Dog Races". Although Chris, I mean the rabbit, seemed to cause some confusion with where the dogs were supposed to run, there were eventually winners that received prizes!! Not sure about any track records!!

CONGRATULATIONS

In His Shadow They Will Run

By Tina Cleary… Still missing our “big gray” Leader Of The Class

In the shadow of the big gray They will run, they will run. For their chance on the big day They will run. For the legacy they must carry They will run, they will run. For the hopes of the many They will run. In their blood, he still lives, So they run, yes they run And his heart to them he gives So they run. In his shadow they must stay, For he’s not with us today But with the shadow of that gray They will run.

HOME OFFICE UPDATE

Hello Everyone! Welcome to the 2013 season! Let me start by thanking all of you for your support and making this one of our best years ever. In this issue you will find two important documents, your 2013 Membership form and the 2012 National Finals Flier. For those of you who are not familiar with our memberships, they are seasonal. This means that your membership expires on July 31st and you will need to renew on Aug. 1st. If you have not been a member yet this is the perfect time to join! We are excited to present this year’s Finals in Freedom Hall at the Kentucky Exposition Center. The largest request we have received over the last couple years has been that we return to a Coliseum generating that big time feel. We hope that everyone will agree that Freedom Hall certainly creates this effect. There will be some changes this year that we want to make sure everyone is aware of. Our electric hookups are electric only. An outside provider will be available to fill water and dump holding tanks. All electric hookups will be on blacktop and are all relatively close to the coliseum and stalls! There are 150 electric spaces available and we feel confident they will sale out, so if you will be needing electric we encourage that you reserve your space early. Stalls and electric spaces will only be reserved by payment. Important note about stalls! Tie outs will be allowed for those hauling in and out, see show flier for pricing. Horses must be hauled back out at night without the purchase of a stall. NO trailering overnight. If you stay on the grounds at night your horse must be stalled! Tie outs are being allowed in effort to help those who live close or are only coming in for one day and will be hauling back out to have a more affordable show. Your co-operation here will be greatly appreciated. If we find that we have to patrol this, stalls may be made mandatory next year. We are in the middle of a very busy city and cannot afford the liability of having horses out of stalls overnight.

families and just about anyone in need. More information about WCM can be found on their website: http://www.waysidechristianmission. org. We will have collection barrels set up around the grounds for food and gently used clothing. We will also have our annual silent auction table that will be used to generate monetary donations for WCM. Please bring items to donate in these areas to help support a very worthy cause. Following your pre-entry this year, more info will be mailed to you including a map of the grounds, a parking pass and more. Please remember to read the rules of the show bill completely! You must pre-enter to keep your qualifications and be eligible for the short go! In closing, we would like to remind everyone that we are a Christian organization! We ask everyone to please keep this in mind at our National Finals. While alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase at the show grounds, please drink responsibly and be considerate of others. We have a lot of children who will be in attendance and we must set a good example for the youngsters of our sport. While scooters, golf carts etc. will be allowed, they need to be used in the proper manor. The Kentucky Expo Center is a state owned facility, operators of any motorized vehicle must have driver’s license. Security will be onsite 24 hours a day to ensure everyone is being safe. Parents, please help us regulate this. We do not want anyone to be banned from using a tool that can be very helpful throughout the week, but security will be heightened this year for everyone’s safety! Again, thank you all for your support this past year and for the years to come. All of us in the IBRA, your directors, reps. and the home office, look forward to providing you with the best possible experience at the Finals and over the entire next season. Sincerely, Shane Cline IBRA President IBRA Directors,

Please take a moment to look over the information being mailed to you about this year’s program book! This is a great way to support our National Finals Awards and get your business or personal ad out there!... You can even use this to wish a family member good luck creating a lasting souvenir for your loved ones!

Send your news to the home office and it will be printed monthly in The Fast Horse Resource. The deadline to have newsletters and updates printed is the 10th of the month preceding. (Example: To be included in our September 2012 issue, have your material to the IBRA office by no later than August 10th, 2012.)

As is custom, we do our best to support our local charities. This year we will be looking to help WaySide Christian Mission. This is one of Louisville’s main safety nets that provides help to single women, men,

Barks N Bits w/ Bella

Barks N Bits with our favorite Jack Russel Terrier...

My Friend, “Miss Tilly” Well, I’ve introduced you to most of the critters that live here at the ranch. You’ve met Duke and Freckles and of course the donkey, Seven. Then there is “Princess Annabelle” the weiner dog. (I haven’t mentioned her much lately since she went to live with Granny.) There is, however, another weiner dog who comes to visit quite often.

Photos by: Still Memories by Anna and Christa Conway I’ve noticed that when Grandma “Honey” decides to come with Grandpa and Miss Tilly to the ranch, she keeps a very close eye on Tilly. She tries to keep Miss Tilly out of the dirt and out of the horse hooves. Honestly, I can’t say that I blame her.

Miss Tilly and Grandpa Honey come down to visit almost everyday. Grandpa likes to work around the barn with the horses and Tilly likes to hang out with the crew down here and work on getting dirty.

Her name is Tilly and she lives with the grandparents that live down the road from us. My people call them Grandma & Grandpa “Honey.” I’ve heard that the nickname started when the little boy that lives here thought that “Honey” was Grandpa’s real name. He heard Grandma calling him that all of the time and it just stuck. Anyway, “Miss Tilly” lives with Grandma and Grandpa “Honey.”

When I say she likes to get dirty, I mean it. Tilly absolutley loves to get out in the barn and mix it up in the dirt. If she’s not in the “poopy pile” then she is rolling in the arena dirt. Her other favorite thing to do while she is here is chew on horse hooves that the farrier has left behind after trimming or putting shoes on the horses’ feet. Tilly thinks those are better than Milk Bones and she loves Milk Bones.

O

You see, the problem with Miss Tilly’s adventures here at the ranch are that they create a lot of work for Grandma Honey. Tilly is almost always a mess when she goes home from the trips to the ranch. This is a guaranteed bath for Tilly - and she gets A LOT of baths - compliments of Grandma Honey. Then there is the issue of the barn lot snacking. You see, the horse hooves are almost always sure to upset Miss Tilly’s tummy. This seems to become evident about the time Tilly makes her way back home and is somewhere in the vicintity of Grandma Honey and a clean floor. Miss Tilly and I have been friends for a long time. We’ve spent many days lounging around in the shade together and she even likes to join in the barking game once in a while. I like it when Tilly comes to visit, I really like watching Grandma Honey trying to keep Tilly out of trouble more than anything.

Bella

Until next month, Stay out of trouble.....

Living Exceptionally…. Half-hearted living is not living at all. It’s existing; and existing isn’t living!

W

hy is it that we always doubt the life-changing, the amazing, the different; but we embrace the usual, the negative, the “normal.” If things change in our lives or if things improve, we often ask, “well, yes, it’s good; but how long will it last?”; or say, “yes, things are good now; but it won’t last.” Why can’t it last? God gives us life every day; so why wouldn’t we embrace it completely, totally, with all that we have? If we love; then love completely! If we enjoy something; then enjoy it all the way to the very core of our being. If we are angry; then be angry with fire in our souls.

ing about “living exceptionally.” And by “living exceptionally” I mean living completely committed to whatever I’m doing each moment of each day. If I’m cleaning stalls; then I ought to do it with gratitude of what God has given me. If I’m working with a horse; then I ought to do it in complete appreciation of the glory of the God shown in the creation of these majestic beings. And if I’m walking in the woods communicating or writing words, like these; then I should make it the best conversation with the Creator I’ve ever had or the best words I’ve ever written.

Half-hearted living is not living at all. It’s existing; and existing isn’t living!

But today, I struggle with one thing — why would God care enough or trust me enough to entrust me in all my weakness with His work in my life? Won’t it be wasted by me, as I have wasted it before? Won’t I pass from this “phase” to another? Is this the way that life should be?

I hope I don’t live my life for the rest of my days on this earth at “half speed” or “safely.” I’m not talking about being foolish; but I am talk-

And, my friends, I have no answers! But, I do know that all I can do is keep trying to do live more exceptionally every day!

Summer Problems

Article By Dr. Steve Fisch, DVM Eliminating standing water and maintaining clean water troughs can reduce mosquito breeding grounds. Use of fly sprays that contain a mosquito repellent and environmental pesticide may also help decrease mosquito populations around your horse and barn. Additionally, simple husbandry changes, such as bringing horses inside during peak mosquito feeding hours, dawn and dusk, and adding fans to barns would help decrease mosquito exposure. A vaccine for Eastern equine encephalitis exists and is highly effective when administered twice yearly.

WEST NILE VIRUS (WNV) Similar to Eastern equine encephalitis, West Nile Virus results in neurological disease and is transmitted to horses, humans, and birds by infected mosquitoes. Symptoms may include fever, decreased appetite, limb weakness, muscle tremors, incoordination, behavioral changes and paralysis. However, some horses may be infected and show only mild symptoms or none at all. As with EEE, WNV is diagnosed by determining antibody levels in the blood combined with the clinical signs. Treatment includes long term supportive care until the symptoms resolve which could take several days to weeks; full recovery may take months. Severely affected horses are often humanely euthanized. Protection from WNV with an annual vaccination is recommended for horses, especially those who reside in warmer climates with heavy mosquito burdens. Efforts by horse owners should also be made to control mosquito populations using methods listed above.

any horse owners look forward to the summer months. Longer days and warmer weather mean more quality time spent with your favorite four-legged companions. However, the warmer months of summer bring with them serious, seasonal problems that could put a damper on your summer show schedule, or worse, be fatal for your horse. EASTERN EQUINE ENCEPHALITIS (EEE) Eastern equine encephalitis is a virus that causes neurologic signs in horses and is primarily seen in the southeastern United States. The virus is transmitted to horses and humans by infected mosquitoes, which obtained the virus after biting on carrier birds. Fever is often the first symptom of the virus, followed by incoordination, staggering, depression and anorexia. These signs worsen over several days and affected horses often die or are humanely euthanized. While there is no way to definitively diagnose EEE, antibody levels in the blood combined with symptoms can be enough for you veterinarian to make a presumptive diagnosis. Examination of cerebrospinal fluid may also support the diagnosis of EEE. Supportive treatments, such as steroids, diuretics and fluid therapy, may be initiated, but recovery is unlikely. Therefore, horse owners should focus on preventative measures.

Page 34

PIGEON FEVER Pigeon fever is caused by the Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis bacteria. This bacterium thrives in the soil and disease occurrence is highest during the dry summer months. It is transmitted to horses by biting flies, which are common during the summer, but horses can also obtain the bacteria by coming into contact with abscess contents. Three manifestations of infection that occur are external abscesses, which is the most common form, internal infection, and ulcerative lymphangitis, which is the least common form. External abscesses appear commonly on the midline of the abdomen and chest, lending to the name pigeon fever, but may occur anywhere on the body. Surgical drainage can be performed and warm compresses and poultices can be used to help speed drainage. A culture is usually preformed to confirm the bacteria. If a horse presents with external abscesses, has a fever, is depressed, or has a decreased appetite, internal infection should be suspected. Ultrasound examination can be used to confirm the presence of abscesses on organs such as the liver and lungs. Horses with ulcerative lymphangitis form will have swollen limbs, lameness and draining tracts. Treatment for internal infections and ulcerative lymphangitis includes long-term antibiotic therapy. Good sanitation and fly control are important in reducing the occurrence of Pigeon Fever. Areas and objects that have come into contact with abscess contents should be properly cleaned and/or disposed of.

Horses affected by rain rot should be kept as dry as possible. Medicated shampoos may also be prescribed and should be applied for several consecutive days. To prevent contamination of other horses, each horse should have its own grooming tools and tack and they should be properly sanitized after each use. Implementing fly control measures may also help decrease the risk of developing rain rot.

These are just a few of the equine diseases that can be encountered during the summer months. Implementing a plan for prevention of these diseases will not only save you money in the long run, but can also save your horses life. Properly vaccinating your horse is an easy and cost-effective method of combating mosquitotransmitted viruses. Be sure to work closely with your local veterinarian to devise the most effective vaccination schedule for your horse. Eliminating standing water and maintaining clean water troughs can reduce mosquito breeding grounds.

HEAVES (RECURRENT AIRWAY OBSTRUCTION) Recurrent airway obstruction (RAO) is common in stabled horses and horses fed hay. In the southeastern United States it can also be seen in horses at pasture during the summer. Hypersensitivity reactions to insects, dust and mold are generally considered the underlying cause of RAO.

For some horses, husbandry changes are enough to offer relief. Horses that develop symptoms during the summer months should be kept out of hot, dusty environments. Horses that are worse in a stall should be allowed as much time in the pasture as possible or they should be kept in a well-ventilated barn. Hay can be soaked to minimize dust, or horses can be switched to hay cubes or a pelleted diet. Severe cases of RAO may require administration of corticosteroids or bronchodilators.

Stock Photo

Chronic cough, nasal discharge, exercise intolerance and enlargement of the abdominal muscles (heave line) due to increased breathing effort are commonly seen in horses affected with RAO. Diagnosis can be made by examining fluid obtained from the lungs or trachea combined with the history and symptoms.

Horses that develop RAO symptoms during the summer months should be kept out of hot, dusty

environments. Horses that are worse in a stall should be allowed as much time in the pasture as RAIN ROT Moisture and breaks in the skin (bug bites and scratches) possible or they should be kept in a well-ventilated barn. can lead to an overgrowth of Dermatophilus congolensi, the bacteria responsible for rain rot. Problems with rain Stephen D. Fisch, DVM rot occur most commonly during periods of heavy rainfall. The natural AVS Equine Hospital located at habitat of the bacteria is unknown, but it is extremely resistant in the environment and persists in the crusts and scabs of affected animals. 9085 Magnolia Hill Drive

Active rain rot lesions are crusted lesions over the rump and topline of the horse, but can also be found on the face and legs. These lesions can be painful, but are rarely itchy. Healing rain rot lesions are dry crusts and areas of hair loss. Examination of crusts under a microscope plus environmental conditions and symptoms can lead to a definitive diagnosis. Page 35

Part 1: Team Indiana at the Jr. High Division National Finals

Team Indiana hit the road in June and safely arrived in Gallup, NM before the start of the Cinch Jr. High Division National Finals. All nineteen members had worked hard and put in many hours in the practice pen hoping to make their mark in Gallup. The week turned out to be full of tough competition, lots of excitement, great sportsmanship, new experiences, and many memories. Team Indiana watched as one of their own was elected to the position of Jr. High Division National Secretary and also cheered on another member who brought back a National Championship in the Chute Dogging. This month, Team Indiana will begin to share their experiences and give us a look into the trip they will never forget.

Dylan Watson Greencastle, IN

Grace Hasler Columbus, IN

Gallup was one of the coolest trips I’ve ever taken. The drive was kind of boring but once we got out there, it was a lot of fun. There were a lot of fun clinics and games. I hope all the younger kids get to go to the National Finals. It was an honor to represent the State of Indiana.

Wow! My trip to Gallup was amazing! Lizards, rock climbing, pawn shops, new friends, awesome competition.....it was great! Running for National Office allowed me to meet tons of amazing people from all over the country. The most memorable experience was when Sydney Hurley passed the flag to me, and I led the Grand Entry as the new National Secretary. Special thanks to Syd, the delegates, and everyone who displayed posters, wore buttons, and yelled for me during my campaign speeches:) I couldn’t have done it without all of your support!

Page 42

Trevor Colby Westfield, IN Our trip started out long - we changed 4 flat tires on the way to Gallup. Two were our own, and two were a lady’s from Michigan. Once we got there, Gallup was awesome! I didn’t perform as well as I had hoped, but Grace and I did get times in both of our ribbon roping runs and finished somewhere around 40th overall! I met a lot of new people, and really enjoyed spending a week with each other as a team. The tug-ofwar was my favorite memory - Indiana finished 2nd place overall and it was a blast! We would have won had we not all fallen down!

Tug Of War (above) Indiana in Purple

Kyle Mackey Hartford City, IN The Cinch Jr High National Finals in Gallup NM is a phenomenal experience. I met a ton of really nice new friends from multiple places. There were lots of things to do. I qualified in several events but my favorite was Breakaway roping. Thanks to all of our sponsors and to my family for making sure I could go.

IJRA News Renae Johnson Rochester, IN I am so grateful to my parents for making it possible for me to be part of 2012 National Finals. My trip to Gallup will never be forgotten, but what I learned this past year and the trials that I had to overcome with my horse is something that I can say helped me become better at what I do and created a stronger bond between me and my horse. He is not “just a horse”, he is my BEST friend. Together we can do anything! To the entire Cinch team: you all have done well, and we should be proud of what we accomplished together; being runner-up in the Tug-Of-War and Volleyball proves that we are a TEAM and we should be proud that Indiana is 2nd in the Nation! A big thank you, to Sydney Hurley for doing a great job and representing our state as National Secretary and congratulations to Grace Hasler for taking over the reins, you will do a great job! And last but not least I want to say, “Way To Go LANE”. . . a National Champion, how exciting. As I move on I am so blessed to have been able to be part of such a great organization, and the memories and friendships I have made will last a lifetime.

Jordan Banta Waynetown, IN This was my last year in the Cinch division. I made it out to Gallup all 3 years ,and this year I competed in the chute doggin, breakaway, and team roping. I had a lot of fun this year as usual I meet new people every year ,and this year I was a voting delegate. I would like to congratulate Grace Hasler on becoming the new NJHR secretary. I would also like to congratulate Lane McPheeters on becoming the Chute Dogging National Champ.

Lexie Austin Floyd Knobs, IN This was my 6th grade year and I qualified for Nationals in barrels, poles and goat tying. Gallup was an amazing experience and it was a rodeo i will never forget! Other than being very nervous I was

Page 43

very pleased with my clean runs. It was a lot of fun hanging out with my Indiana friends and meeting new people from around the country. Gallup is a town with a ton of western movie history and a lot of Indian history as well. I am going to work very hard to qualify for next year because I cant wait to go back. I will never forget the time that I spent with my family and how beautiful church rock was after hiking all the way up to the top. God is awesome in what he has given us!! I have to go now so I can go get on my horse so I am ready this fall when it starts all over again!

Sydney Hurley Columbia City, IN

My third and final year in Gallup was awesome! I didn’t just go to run some barrels and rope, but I went to represent. Not just Indiana, but all 50 states, Canada, and Australia. Being this year’s National Jr. High Secretary was over the top exciting. Mid winter meetings in Colorado, Vegas, NFR and a fabulous turn out in New Mexico made a great year. I loved attending all of the meetings and carrying a flag from each country morning and night. I’m going to really miss all my friends and all of the fun we had at Nationals. I wish everyone the best of luck next year and God Bless.

Tucker Whitten Bargersville, IN This year’s Cinch Junior High national Finals were great. I made it to New Mexico in 4 events, Tie-Down Roping, Ribbon Roping, Team Roping, and Goat Tying. I didn’t do great in the roping events, I had to borrow horses when I got there because my calf horse came up sore, but still made it back to the short go in goats and finished 11th in the nation in Goat Tying. I had great time and hope to make it again next year.

Don’t Take It For Granted

Rain.......Sweet Rain...... Some of you will respond immediately to the reading of that simple word. Most of those living in my part of the country have been praying for rain for the biggest part of the summer this year, including me. We have had a serious drought in a large portion of the Midwest and if you drive through my part of the country, it shows. The once green pastures and hayfields are brown.... corn is so “sickly” looking and what’s scary is how much it will impact the prices this winter. Farmers around here say the corn crops are ruined.....most people didn’t get much - if any - of a second cutting on their hay. I will have to admit, at first I was loving not fighting the mud this spring. I was enjoying sunny day after sunny day. I mean, it was hot, but we could ride in our arena pretty much everyday. Then slowly we started to notice the dust clouds forming around our horse’s feet as they walked through the arena. The dust clouds would grow and seemed as if they could carry us away. The dust became almost unbearable. We even attempted to water the arena before we rode each night. That became scary as water pressure dwindeled and the creek became so shallow it almost disappeared. It had to get that bad before I found myself praying out loud as I did my chores, walking through crunchy brown grass to fill up water troughs for all the horses day after day. It was then that I realized how much I personally take for granted. I’m sure I am not the only one who doesn’t take time to thank God for the rain when it is coming in downpours - or at least showing up once in a while. But, boy, when it avoids you for weeks and months at a time you begin to realize how much God blesses us without our thinking about it.

one day we realize that our lives are “dusty?” Do we even realize that they can get that way if we forget to “water” our spirit? The one difference here is that we have a choice. We can choose to “bring on the rain” or to live in the “dust.”

I began to think about how each year thousands of acres upon acres are planted with seed for different kinds of crops and the farmers are all expecting the rain to come and nourish the ground and help bring forth a harvest. Without the rain, (and of course the sun, etc) there would be NO HARVEST. I am seeing proof of that all around this year.

As I was out in the barn one dust filled afternoon last month. I had been praying and asked the kids if they had been praying for rain - thanking God in advance for sending it. They both replied, “Yes.” We noticed some clouds forming on a day that showed no rain in the forecast and then “drip, drip, drip.” It started raining. The Lord blew up a nice big rain (it even blew our trampoline from the yard!)

How does that translate to us? Are we taking for granted the things God has blessed us with? As Christians do we just live day to day until

It was a wonderful feeling to see the kids reaction when God answered our prayers (as well as many other’s I am sure) that day. The

Page 44

smell of that rain is still fresh in my memory. And I don’t think I will ever forget the joy I felt as the drops were hitting the ground. (The kids said it was well worth losing the trampoline.) I hope that I never allow myself to get to the point of a drought on the inside-spiritually before I ask for God’s help. I also hope that I remember to thank him everyday for those things that I could very easily take for granted. 1 Thessalonians 16-18 16 Rejoice evermore.17 Pray without ceasing. 18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. Until next month.... Thank you, Father, for the rain..... Happy Trails & God Bless! Christa

That last town we was in Well… I ran into this man He said the Lord knows me And he has a plan

Rooster looked at Skip Said this is pretty hard I’ll be turnin` back now Said I’ll see you around pard

Psalms 122:1 I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the LORD

I know we ain`t bad men Never ones to steal Been in a few dust ups But never did we kill

That preacher told me He would show me the way If I would repent So I kneeled to pray

Skip laughed at Rooster Where you goin` to go This trail is your home It and me is all you know

One Last (& most important) thought… Salvation is a gift and a choice......

Read past issues of our Christian Cowboy Collection and the Christian Barrel Racer’s Newsletter at the website below!

Jesus died on the cross as the final sacrifice. When He was resurrected on the 3rd day, he defeated Satan for us. All we have to do is believe that He beat death and acknowledge it with our words. If we believe that and accept Him as our personal savior…we are promised eternal life with Him in Heaven. You can’t earn your way into Heaven; you have to believe your way there. So many people think they “aren’t good enough” to get to Heaven… But… Salvation is a GIFT from God and you don’t earn a gift. Gifts are something someone gives to you and for the gift to be yours, you have to accept it. All we have to do is accept that wonderful gift. I know I have…won’t you? But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. Romans 5:15

For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Romans 10: 9-10

New w Requ uiremen nts for Inndiana T Trainerrs Beginnning July 15th, trrainers in Indian na will be requireed to provide a certifiicate of insurance evidencing all employees who o are covered by workeer’s compensatio on insurance. The certificate of in nsurance must reflectt that the coverage is current. Th he Indiana Horsee Racing Comm mission (IHRC) must m also be listted as a certificatte holder. Also the inssurance must have been secured d prior to or proof of coverage presennted at the time of o licensure. If th he trainer does not n have any emplooyees, then an afffidavit stating th here are no emplloyees and a Clearaance Certificate for Coverage aree required.

Whether thhe parties believe they are creating an employer-employee rrelationship. 110. Whether thhe principal is orr is not in busineess mployee or an inddependent contractor is a fact Whetther one is an em sensittive determinatioon. However, as a general rule, eemployees are usuallly subject to a prrincipal’s controol while an indeppendent contraactor generally ccontrols the methhod and detail of the work and answeerable only to thhe result. Also, aas a general rule, employees are typicaally provided toools and supplies and are instructted when and wheree to perform taskks. In contrast, aan independent ccontractor typicaally provides hiss or her own suppplies and tools aand determines the tim me and matter inn which the taskk is to be perform med.

This n new requiremen nt has many tra ainers asking th he difficult questiion: Who is an employee and who w is an independent contraactor? The Inndiana’s Courts and the Indiana Worker’s Comp pensation Board use a 10 factor test to determine wheth her one is an em mployee or an or. That test is seet forth in the Ind diana Supreme indepeendent contracto Court’s decision in Moberly M v. Day 75 57 N.E. 2d 1007 7. No one factor of the 10 factor test deetermines wheth her the person is an employee or I courts an nd the Indiana an inddependent contraactor; rather the Indiana Workeer’s Compensatiion Board look to the totality of the circum mstances and eviidence relative to o the ten factor test. t The teen factors the Ind diana Courts and d the Indiana Wo orker’s Comppensation Board consider in deciding whether on ne is an emplooyer or an indepeendent contracto or are: 11. 22. 33. 44. 55. 66. 77. 88.

The extent of o control which h, by agreement, the principal may exercisse over the detaills of the work. Whether or not the agent (i.e., the independeent contractor orr i engaged in a distinct d occupatio on or business. employee) is The kind off occupation, witth reference to whether, w in the locality, the work is usually done under the direction of an employer orr by a specialist without w supervission. Skill level required by the occupation o perforrmed by the agent. Who supplieed the instrumen ntalities, tools, or place of work The length of o time the agentt worked for the principal. Method of payment, wheth her by time or by y job. part of the principal’s p regulaar business.

The IIndiana Courts annd the Indiana W Worker’s Compeensation Board have also generally cooncluded that loong term work reelationships wheree one performs a continuous servvice are suggestive of an emplooyee/employer rrelationship. In ccontrast, a relatioonship involving g irreguular work hours, interrupted or nnon-continuous sservices and wheree payment is maade sporadically suggests indepeendent contractorr statuss. Finallly, while evidennce supporting inn each of these teen factors is considdered, the Indianna Courts and thhe Indiana Comppensation Board alwayys consider evideence as to the paarties belief and understanding relativve to the relationnship. For exampple, did the trainner and the exerccise rider or grooom believe they w were creating ann emplooyee/employer rrelationship or not. As thhis new rule goess into effect on JJuly 15th, all trainners should mainttain, for their buusiness records, proof of currentt workers comppensation coveraage, copies of all affidavits attestting they have no o emplooyees and copiess of clearance leetters. Additionallly, trainers that are noot residences of the state of Indiaana and who havve procured workeers compensatioon coverage outside this state, shhould immeediately consult ttheir agents to be certain that theeir existing coverrage applies and affords workerss compensation ccoverage for activiities conducted iinside the state oof Indiana.

his month’s mystery cowgirl picture is of a cute little girl on a pretty gray horse. This little girl has grown up to be a beautiful lady who has became very succesful in the horse industry. Matter of fact, you may have called on her a time or two if you live in her part of the country. If you can correctly identify our cowgirl and her horse, include a year and maybe even a location....and give us as much information as possible....you can win your choice of a one year subscription to The Horse Resource, a “Horsey Hat” or a “Horsey-T.” GOOD LUCK!

No Winner Yet......

ast month’s mystery cowboy picture didn’t include much as far as clues so we’re going to include what clues we shared last month and add a few more. This picture came to us along with a letter (which we will print a portion of after our mystery is solved.) The cowboy shown here was about 19 years old and the horse shown is one that was ridden by several others from around the same location. There were several cowboys from the same area as the fellow shown here. According to the letter we received (and I can testify to this - I witnessed many of them compete in person) there was a concentration of some tough barrel racers within five miles of one another that vied for the winner’s circle at the saddle club where they were all members....as well as shows across the state. This saddle club was in north central Indiana and as far as I know still has shows (or at least had shows up until recently.) Some other familiar names to come from this area were the Mongosa’s, Bruce Corral, Paul Thiry and Dick Cole. (I am sure there were plenty others!) If you can correctly identify our cowboy and his horse, include a year and maybe even a location....and give us as much information as possible....you can win your choice of a one year subscription to The Horse Resource, a “Horsey Hat” or a “Horsey-T.”

We Need Your Pictures From the Past..... We are running low on photos.....Please send us your older photos of horsemen and women (and kids) that are still active in the horse business today. Or if you have pictures of a well known horse or event....that will mix things up a bit. We’re up for some new mysterys if you are!! Keep sending us those photos!!
