ave you all been enjoying your summer? By the time you are reading this, some kids will already be back in school and we’ll be looking towards wrapping up the summer vacations and fun. It just seems like the summer-break isn’t long enough anymore. I remember getting out of school before Memorial Day and not returning until after Labor Day. The Indiana Barrel Racing Futurity was our indicator that summer was wrapping up and it was time for school again. Speaking of the Indiana Barrel Futurity, this year will be their 40th Anniversary! You can read a little more about the history of the IBRF and see a few pictures from the past in this month’s News Section. We also have some great pictures from this year’s Preakness. We know you already know the results, but it’s the great pictures and coverage that we want to share with our readers, so enjoy! :) Next month we’ll go back to the Belmont Stake.

If you haven’t checked in on Bella lately, she’s got a lot going on with a rooster that thinks he’s a dog and a “look-a-like” living under the same roof....She’s also thinking about getting her own Facebook page...what do you think? Until next month.....squeeze in a little more summer fun before it’s too late...... and remember to count your blessings on horseback! God Bless and Ride Safe, Christa Conway
A Little “Barrel Talk” If any of you have ever visited “Barrel Talk” or the other forums on BarrelHorseWorld.com, then you’ll have an idea of what to expect here. If you are not familiar with this “on-line hot spot,” be prepared to read many interesting comments from other people in the horse world. We will try to include topics that will be helpful and/or meaningful to our readers. Look for answers to questions you may find yourself asking, opinions on supplements and feed, experience with health issues and the remedies that others have found to be helpful. The list goes on and on, just like the list of topics you will find on www.barrelhorseworld.com.
Getting a Shiny Coat
Dellas Speedy Devil Extreme Veteran Posts: 319 Location: TN It’s been a long time since I’ve posted on here. But I always know this is THE place to go when I need some answers :) For some reason my horses’ coats are really dull. They are all healthy and in good shape, on a regular worming schedule, and on safechoice feeds. So my question now is, what can I give them that will help bring out their shiny coats again?? LRQHS Lot’s of brushing and wheat germ oil. I’ve, also, used Omega Horseshine in the past with nice results. Orrrrrr, rub them down with baby oil lol jk, jk....they will shine though. Girls_Gotta_Jet I asked this I think last week and it turned out my mare has ulcers. Thanks to everyone’s suggestions, we are now treating ulcers. Dull coat was one of the signs. Might start there. Murphy If ALL of your horses have dull coats (not just one) I would look into a vitamin/nutrition issue. If you have dewormed them regularly, I would maybe try to get a fecal done just so you can cross that off your list. HealthyCoat is a favorite at my place.
Page 4
SuckerForHorses RE: Girls_Gotta_Jet That was one of my mare’s symptoms as well. I may have mentioned it on your previous thread, I can’t remember. Anyhow, if that is not the case here, my questions to the OP would be: I see they are getting SafeChoice. Are they getting at least the daily minimum recommended amount? Probably something like 4-6 lbs per day. If not, they are not getting the entire benefits of the vitamins and minerals that the feed provides. Are they getting any fresh grass at all from turnout? If not, they are missing out on the Omega 3 fatty acids that fresh grass provides. My horses bloom on grass. Turnout on grass would likely help with their coat condition (and other things). I feed flax in the winter when my horses are not on grass (I live in Vermont, everything is covered in snow!) They get 1 cup per day of whole flax seeds. You do NOT need to grind them before feeding, and buying them whole in bulk is much cheaper than paying for a ground stabilized bag of flax at the feed store. I think I paid $30 for a 50 lb bag of whole flax seeds at my local store. When my horses are on flax, their coats are like mirrors, and they get better hoof growth as well. sorrel horse ranch Forco. Nevertooold on here sells it. Herbie ^^^^^This!
RunNbarrels I feed this and glo n go by formula 707. My mare is super shiny. The Bling Princess If its a vitamin and mineral deficiency, which I suspect it may be because all of them have dull coats, I would look into Equilix. It’s flax based, has pre and probiotics for their gut, plus all you need for vit/min. After I started feeding it all my horses’ coats dappled up:) Guiness I second Equilix!! Although I use the top dress called Equipride. Great supplements! Southtxponygirl HealthyCoat is my Favorite too.. Luv2runbarrels Platinum preformance. Can tell a huge difference in their coats Canchasr1 RE: sorrel horse ranch Yep, best Ive ever used. All my horses got three shades darker and have not faded color. Dellas Speedy Devil Thanks so much for the replies!! I hadn’t stopped to consider it being possibly a vitamin problem. I’m gonna give that a try and see if I have any luck, and if not I may give one of the coat supplements a shot :) thanks again!!
Lil_Pony35 Fat and fairy dust. Fat for sure! The fairy dust I have mixed thoughts about lol!! scwebster Def make sure they are getting all the vitamins/nutrients they need in their diet. On a side note a cheap and easy trick I have seen done a lot is mixing a couple of cups oil (olive oil, corn oil/ vegetable oil) in their feed everyday. This will make their coat shine, but as I said you want to be sure there are no deficiencies in their diet as well. Good luck. Used2B DAC Oil makes my horses noticeably more shiny in less than 2 weeks. Love it!! I think not having the right vitamins and minerals cause the lowest quality haircoats though...and sun sure doesn’t help matters either. SG. I agree mine are shiny and never get brushed. good nutrition. might look at your grain hay pasture

MY DadDy Always Said... One of the best pieces of advice I ever got was from a horse master. He told me to go slow to go fast. I think that applies to everything in life. We live as though there aren’t enough hours in the day but if we do each thing calmly and carefully we will get it done quicker and with much less stress. ~Viggo Mortensen We’d love to hear what your Daddy Always said... Heartland Futurity Trials
Trials held for $150,000 Gordon Mobley Futurity
SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – July 4, 2014 – Fireworks of a different kind were going off at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino Friday, July 4 as 42 registered Indiana sired two-year-olds vied for one of 10 spots in the $150,000 Gordon Mobley Futurity Final set for Saturday, July 26. Ms Fool Me Once and rider Shanley Jackson turned in the fastest trial with a time of :15.664 seconds to earn top billing heading into the final. Starting from post three, Ms Fool Me Once broke well and once she got rolling, she exploded to the lead and drew off to a one and three-quarter length win. The sorrel daughter of Escondido Beach pulled four other qualifiers in behind her during the race, including second place finisher, Plumber Joe, third place finisher Eye Pay U Off and fourth place finisher Indy Bred Chick. The win for Ms Fool Me Once was her second in four starts for ownertrainer Roy Moore, who also bred the filly. She now has more than $13,000 in purse earnings during her young racing career. The second fastest trial of the night was awarded to Stone Toasted, ridden by Juan Guerrero. The sorrel filly by Brimmstone was a factor from gate to wire, winning by three lengths for trainer Randy Smith. Fames Dial (Jose Beltran) and WH Shake It Shake It (Victor Olivo) finished second and third, respectively, but did not qualify for the final. Stone Toasted won her trial in a time of :15.745 in only her second career start. The win was her first for owners Vicki Lundstrum and Timm Gordon. Stone Toasted gave trainer Randy Smith his second win of the trials. He scored a spot in the final with Cant Catcha Corona in the second trial of the night. Also ridden by Guerrero, the gelded son of First Corona Home posted the third fastest time of the night with the win in :15.920 seconds. Put Ten Across was the final trial winner of the evening, posting a time of :15.946. Guided by Jackson, who scored his second win on the night, Put Ten Across is owned and bred by Dan Frazier and trained by Matt Frazier. The victory was the second in three starts for the grey gelding, which is another product of sire First Corona Home.
SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – July 5, 2014 – It wasn’t a great start, but it was the finish that counted for WRS Quick Regards and jockey Juan Guerrero. After falling to his knees coming out of the gate, WRs Quick Regards recovered quickly and sprinted home for the win in the first of four trials for the Heartland Futurity Saturday, July 5 at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino. The time of :15.858 seconds was the fastest of the trials to place WRs Quick Regards atop the standings heading into the $50,000-added final set for Saturday, July 26. Starting from post six in the seven-horse trial, WRs Quick Regards was able to maneuver to the lead in the final strides of the 300-yard sprint to grab his first win in only his second lifetime start. One Famous Kisser with Aron Hunt aboard finished three-quarters of a length back in second followed by First Down Renata and Yordanis Amaro for third. All three top finishers, along with fourth place finisher Scandalia, with jockey Victor Olivo aboard, qualified for a seat in the 10-horse final. WRs Quick Regards is owned by Gwen Williams’ Williams Racing Stables, Inc. of LaCenter, Ky. The two-year-old gelded son of Chicks Regard is trained by Randy Smith, who also connected for a win in the second trial with WRs Secret Dream, ridden by Shanley Jackson. WRs Secret Dream, a sorrel son of No Secrets Here, completed his trial in a time of :15.886 seconds for the second fastest time of the qualifiers. This Wagon Is Mine, with Guerrero aboard, finished second and qualified for the final along with Iz Special James and jockey Aron Hunt, who finished third and will also return for the $50,000-added final. Smith had two more winners on the program, including Rated R and Guerrero in the third Heartland trial with a time of :15.979. Also owned by Smith, Rated R was making his first career start. The Tres Fortunes grey gelding will be joined by second place finisher, Jess Gold Debutante and rider Amaro, in the final. The complete list of qualifiers for the Heartland Futurity Final, with time and jockey, includes: WRs Quick Regards (Juan Guerrero - :15.858), WRs Secret Dream (Shanley Jackson - :15.886), This Wagon is Mine (Guerrero - :15.909), Rated R (Guerrero - :15.979), Jess Gold Debutante (Yordanis Amaro - :15.995), One Famous Kisser (Aron Hunt - :16.000), First Down Renata (Amaro - :16.073), Iz Special James (Hunt - :16.078), Scandalia (Victor Olivo - :16.079) and Jesse Jr First Down (Hunt - :16.147).

News SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – July 5, 2014 – Fierce Runaway and Yordanis Amaro held their ground early amidst tight quarters and rallied home as the winners in the second running of the $42,200 Indiana Grand Classic Saturday, July 5 at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino. The win was the fourth in seven outings over the Indiana Grand surface and the fifth overall for Fierce Runaway. Tight quarters brought several horses out together from the gate. Amaro, who hails from Cuba, kept Fierce Runaway focused on his goal and kept her in top gear through the wire, fending off a late charge by April Iz Game and Gerardo Garrido to win the event in a time of :20.291. Sun Fun for Magic with rider Harold Collins aboard was a strong third place finisher in the 400-yard dash.

Jaguar Rocket Trials held
SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – July 5, 2014 – It was a big night for Trainer Randy Smith and Jockey Juan Guerrero who teamed up for three wins on the 10-race all-Quarter Horse program at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino Saturday, July 5. In addition to two trial wins in the Heartland Futurity, the Smith-Guerrero connected for a win in one of the three trials for the Jaguar Rocket, which will be contested Saturday, July 26 during another evening dedicated solely to the sprinters. Rock Crushin Dynasty picked a good time to win his first career race as he rallied home as the top qualifier in the Jaguar Rocket trials. A clean trip and a driving effort brought the chestnut gelding under the finish line in a time of :15.812 seconds. The son of FDD Dynasty was one and one-quarter lengths ahead of second place finisher, Shans Man and jockey Ben Creed. Sparky McClone and jockey Harold Collins rounded out the top three finishers. In addition to Rock Crushin Dynasty, other trial winners included Interfector and Creed in a time of :15.856 seconds and Tac Kit T and rider Julie Veltman in a time of :16.188.
“We have been working really hard on this mare so she could compete,” said Salvador Rojas, owner and trainer of Fierce Runaway. “She is small but she has a big heart.” Rojas has had the mare the past three years. The native of Chicago did not give Amaro very many instructions and left the game plan up to the rider. “He (Amaro) knows this mare really well,” said Rojas. “He gets on her a lot and he knows what to do.” Fierce Runaway was the bettor’s choice in the six-horse field and paid $3.40, $2.40 and $2.10 across the board. The five year old chestnut daughter of Ocean Runaway increased her career bankroll to six figures with the win. She also won the event last year by four lengths when it was contested at 350 yards for Rojas, who has a stable of 20 at Moline, Ill.

SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – July 5, 2014 – Moore Disco Tree and rider Gabriel Lagunes were surprise winners in the second running of the $28,840 Leader of the Class Stakes at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino Saturday, July 5. The stakes race was restricted to horses that have been sold at public auction at the QHRAI Speed Sale held every year in the state of Indiana. Moore Disco Tree and Lagunes began their journey from post three in the nine-horse lineup and proved to be too much for his competitors to handle, drawing off for the easy win by one and one-half lengths in the 350 yard dash. BP Mighty Rare and Shanley Jackson finished second a neck ahead of Bay Be Brooks and Gerardo Garrido for third. Time for the race was :17.920 seconds. “He (Moore Disco Tree) responded well and was perfect,” said Lagunes, who divides his time between Belterra and Indiana Grand. “I didn’t have to urge him at all or use the whip much. I didn’t know what to expect since he was coming in off a long layoff but he was perfect tonight.” Moore Disco Tree paid $38.20, $11.60 and $5.20 across the board. He is owned by Jeanne McClure-Lorenzo and trained by Amanda Welch, who resides in Muncie, Ind.
Habits Secret prevails in Bradford Stakes
“There was no condition race for him so we decided to try our luck in this stakes race,” said Welch. “We brought him down a couple weeks ago and worked him out of the gate and he turned in a bullet work. He’s a horse that loves to swim, so we had him in the pool a lot to get ready for this race.” Welch purchased Moore Disco Tree out of the QHRAI Speed Sale last fall for $1,700. They liked his looks and figured it was a gamble worth taking. They immediately gave him some time off and got one start in him at Hialeah where he just missed the win against claiming company. Welch noted that Moore Disco Tree was being bothered by stifle problems, so they gave him six months off after his first and only start for them at Hialeah in December. Welch is in her third year as a Quarter Horse trainer. The native of Muncie, Ind. grew up around horses and learned the ropes from Calvin Prescott, a well-known Thoroughbred trainer in the state of Indiana. After starting with Thoroughbreds, Welch crossed over to Quarter Horses and now works full time as a trainer, traveling to Hialeah in Miami during the winter months and racing at Indiana Grand during the summer. She has 10 horses currently at her farm just outside of Muncie. Moore Disco Tree, a four-year-old son of Oak Tree Special, now has three wins in 10 career starts. The win in his first stakes race more than doubled his career earnings to nearly $30,000. The race is named after Leader of the Class, a hard hitting runner who went on to enjoy a successful career as a stallion. Purchased as a yearling by Tina and Kevin Cleary, the stallion only sired 41 horses but had 19 winners. One of his most noted offspring is Air Born Leader, who has won the Born Runner Classic Stakes at Indiana Grand four years in a row. Both Tina and Kevin were in the winner’s circle to present the trophy to the connections of Moore Disco Tree.

SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – July 5, 2014 – Competing in the seventh running of the $43,000 Bradford Stakes was a question mark for Habits Secret earlier in the day. The four-year-old sorrel horse had been battling foot issues and an abscess could not be maintained by owner-trainer Ricardo Martinez. However, a last minute visit by a special farrier from Kentucky took care of the issue and sent Habits Secret to the winner’s circle Saturday, July 5 at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino. “I was going to scratch him (Habits Secret) earlier today,” said Martinez. “We couldn’t figure out how to fix his foot and the farrier from Kentucky fixed it earlier today. I owe him a big thank you.”

News Habits Secret looked tough on the track. The son of No Secrets Here broke well out of the gate from post one and secured the top spot early for rider Yordanis Amaro of Cuba. It was up to his opponents to catch him in the end, a task that they could not do. In the end, Habits Secret was able to hold off a late rush by Joltin Jess and Shanley Jackson to take top honors in the Bradford Stakes. Last year’s Bradford Stakes winner, Finche, finished third for jockey Debbie Freeman. Habits Secret increased his career bankroll to more than $284,000 with his win. He now has seven career wins, three of which have been turned in over Indiana Grand’s track. “I bought him (Habits Secret) as a yearling for $5,000,” said Martinez. “He’s come a long way since then. And I liked our draw from post one. He likes the one hole and all of the big races he’s won have been from post one.” Habits Secret completed the 400-yard dash in a time of :19.694. He paid $7.60, $4.00 and $2.80 across the board. The stakes race was one of three on the program at Indiana Grand with the entire card dedicated to Quarter Horse racing. A crowd estimated to be more than 5,000 was in attendance for the event that included numerous contests, activities and giveaways, including t-shirts that were sponsored in part by the Quarter Horse Racing Association of Indiana. Following the racing program, live entertainment was provided by The Willis Clan, who recently advanced on “America’s Got Talent,” leading into a 30-minute fireworks display that dazzled the crowd. A total of six all-Quarter Horse days are on the schedule for 2014 at Indiana Grand. The next one will be held Saturday, July 26.

News Indiana Barrel Racing Futurity
Indiana Barrel Racing Futurity - 40 Years Strong The Indiana Barrel Racing Futurity will celebrate it’s 40th anniversary over the weekend of this year’s event, September 5, 6 & 7th, 2014. (See flyer this issue)
The show will be held at the Hoosier Horse Park in Edinburgh, Indiana, where it has been held since the Horse Park opened. A fun weekend is planned for all riders and spectators, with lots of prizes and special awards. The first Futurity was held in Westfield , Indiana where Leroy Kovey & family resided. This was one of the first indoor arenas close to Indianapolis to hold barrel shows. Lee Ann Kovey (Guilky) later moved out west and
eventually qualified for the National Finals Rodeo riding her great stallion, Rackum On Man. Dottye Goodspeed of Missouri won the first IBRF Futurity. Dottye and her husband, Bobby, also were NFR Qualifiers. Since the first futurity there have been some of the best horses and riders come to Indiana to participate and win this annual event. Riders such as Martha Wright, Talmadge Green, Chris Duke, Dick Shely, Donnie Reece, Mike Green, Butch Price, Bobby Stivers, Kebo Almond, Cody Bauserman, Brett Monroe, Troy Crumrine, Jimmy Cagle, Lance Graves - just to name some of them. If the horses that have won here over the years had their lifetime earnings added together it would be very impressive.

News
Not only have there been a lot of great riders and horses but there has also been a lot of great people that have and still work on this show. Many of them moved on after several years, such as Jim & Mona Childers, Roger & Dee Carter & Tom & Pam Mack. Some have passed away such as Lee Elliott, Bruce Smith & Mona Childers. Some of the original futurity committee workers such as Ray & Vickie Duke, Jeanette Smith & Mel Daniels are still involved. Others that are still helping with this and have been for a really long time are Steve & Vickie Benefiel, Bob & Dianna Jaqua, Pat Stemaly, Debbie Elliott, Marceda Lybarger, Rex Hoff and Paul & Julia Martin (Julia donates her time to work in the entry booth and does a spectacular job.) It just seems fitting to give these people credit for all their hard work and dedication. Hopefully this will be the best year yet for this event. Approval and help from the following Associations makes this an event on a national level: Barrel Futurities of America, Future Fortunes and IBRA . We were lucky enough to get the Quarter Horse Racing Association of Indiana to also get involved when Vickie Duke wanted to get a second career program going with Barrel Racing and Certified Indiana Bred Race horses. The QHRAI is sponsoring this program with the IBRF to give awards to the highest placing Ceritified Indiana Breds that have become barrel racing horses and are entered in the Futurity and or Open Sweepstakes on Saturday. Hopefully this program catches on in other states that have quarter Horse Racing to promote a second career for race horses Lets all attend and have the best Futurity that has ever been held here!!! We’ve included a few pictures from the past (Puhl’s Photo and IBRF.)

d and Martha Wright of Slash W Barrel Horses located in Dublin, Texas know what it is like to train and ride the best when it comes to barrel horses. This husband and wife duo have been training barrel horses for more than twenty years, but when it comes down to their philosophy Ed Wright will quickly tell you its all about figuring out your horse and being able to correctly communicate with it. “To be able to talk to our horse we need to listen to him first and see what he’s thinking and then experiment a little bit to see what he knows,” Wright said. Wright strongly believes that when working with horses it comes down to controlling the three factors of a horse: his speed, his direction, and his body shape.
“Those are the three major factors we work on with a horse before we ever get to the barrels,” Wright said. He also believes that education is the key to having success both riding, and training horses.

“Education is what makes the horse understand communication, and when he understands communication then he eventually forms a habit, Wright said, “But as with any good basketball team, everybody on a team needs to work together, and that’s what a horse and rider do if it’s done correctly.” He explains that when it comes to speed it’s not only just about how fast a horse can do something, how slow it can do something is just as important, and when focusing on barrel racing you also have to take stride into consideration. “When you go to a barrel and everything is really, really working good, you go to it with a long fast stride, you go around it with a short fast stride,” Wright said. “You don’t slow down to go around it, you shorten the stride to where the horse can control the turn.” He Believes that horses and humans are a lot alike. They begin being educated at birth, and
Page 22
Between the Barrels w/Madeleine Green broke and getting their mind right. He does a lot of work doing figure eights, rollbacks, reverse arcs, spirals and really wants the horse to learn to hold their lead. “I want it to be fun for him, and what I do is so important it’s unreal, but also when I quit is so important,” Wright said.

Wright considers a horse’s confidence to be a very important factor as well when training them on barrels. “Confidence is knowledge mixed with experience, it doesn’t matter if it is you me or the horse,” Wright said. “When a horse has knowledge and experience of how to listen to me with that knowledge, and how to use itself the way I am asking him, that’s what gives him confidence.” It’s all about giving your horse the instructions and making sure he understands how to do those instructions. “I dance with my horse, I don’t intimidate him, I move with him. If I slow my motion down I want him to get ready to listen to me to slowdown and if I energize my body - and I’m not talking about jumping, kicking, whipping, and spurring- but if I energize I want him to get ready to get gone.” Wright explains, “It’s all about that special bond between you and a horse and if you could use that as an example in your everyday life it might make that better too.”
that teaching them and getting them to listen to you from the beginning will only make the process of breaking and training a horse easier. “When a horse is finished learning or a rider is finished learning is when their life is over, we learn more everyday,” Wright said. “I actually try to learn a little more every step with my horse.” These three factors are a result of Wright’s years spent learning from horses. “When you get a horseman that has studied his game in depth he really recognizes what the horse is telling him which helps him learn,” Wright said. He also credits Tom and Bill Dorrance who started the true understanding of a horse. “Before them it was more intimidation training, big bits, big spurs, get them tired, and force them to do things,” Wright said. “Once the Dorrance’s started that (understanding the horse), so many horseman in different disciplines adapted to it and went with it.” When training a barrel horse Wright likes to focus on getting them
“If people could get along as good as horses I think that everybody’s life would be better,” Wright said. “When you show them (people) how to get along with a horse, hopefully it makes them get along with each other better.”

National Newsletter
Dear Member(s), I would like to start by thanking you for another great IBRA season and welcome you to the 2015 season. We have had many wonderful memories made and hope that you have also. There is nothing better than seeing families and friends enjoying themselves doing what they love. In our case God blessed us with the love of horses and speed. While we are as competitive in nature as the sport we ride in, we are also compassionate, encouraging and loving. Each year we see more and more benefit and charity shows increase in numbers as well as attendance. We see our youth numbers growing and more kids cheer for their siblings and friends. This is our future and from the looks of things we have a bright future ahead.
Adult Class
There are a lot of great things happening this 2015 season. One of the most exciting is the addition of an Adult Class! This class will be sanctioned to give points and awards to those of age 19-39. This is the largest age group that we have running our association and we have had many request that they have their own class to run as well. As with any new class this will take some time to implement. Show producers will have the option to add the class right away as of Aug. 1st but we are sure that it will be a while before this becomes a regularly implemented class due to possible complications with series shows, other organization rules and things of this nature. So if you would like to see the Adult Class added to a show bill please let the producer know but also be mindful that this is going to be a process for the first couple seasons. Eligibility for the class will be determined similar to that of the youth. However old you are at the start of the season will determine what class you can run for points the rest of the year. So if you are 39 on Aug. and turn 40 Aug. 2nd you will be considered an Adult rider with the IBRA for the remainder of the year. ALL RIDERS TAKE NOTE OF AGES FOR CLASSES AS DETERMINED BY AGE ON AUG.1 OF NEW SEASON Youth: 18 & Under Adult: 19-39 Masters: 40 & Up **Your age as of Aug. 1st will determine the class that you will run for the remainder of the season.**
2014 National Finals The National Finals Flier is posted at the link at the bottom of this page and the link to the left. The schedule is quite similar this year but we are allowing contestants the option to come in one day sooner. You may arrive this year as early as Sunday. You do not have to come in this early but it is an option to allow those hauling in from further away some additional rest time. As al502-239-4000 office 502-239-4100 fax Shane@ibra.us

ways we will have great added money with over $40,000 added to the pot and lots and lots of awards. Carrol Leather trophy jackets, Pro Rider saddles and Monsoon Trophy buckles all will be back in beautiful fashion. Our leather awards this year such as halters, breast collars, head stalls and more will be presented by Jaco Brands, our official tack supplier and Title Sponsor of the 2014 IBRA National Finals. Jaco brings a unique style to the table that is new to the horse world and we are happy to bring it to you. Jaco also offers a multitude of retail items please check them out at www.jacobrands.com. We are very excited to return to C Bar C Expo this year mostly because of the feedback that we have been getting from you! Those who attended last year’s finals left with a lot of positive comments and we hope that those who did not make it will this year share in the experience. As most of you know the National Finals is where we hold our annual directors meeting. We truly want to manage our association as best we can and we want your voices to be heard. If you have any suggestions for our rulebook whether it be adding, subtracting or amending rules we encourage you to let your directors know so that we can bring it to the table and vote on it in this meeting. Some things that we typically try to keep in mind is that we try not to implement rules that will not work across the board. This is to keep an element of consistency. We also try to keep a relatively short rulebook. Our current rule book is 10 pages long and they are only half pages. We want everyone to be able to enjoy themselves without having to check the rules all the time but we also have to have guidelines to maintain fairness. Program Info: Here is a link to the National Finals Program information. You have a chance to win and entry for the Nationals and/or a National Finals jacket!
New Website Feature
An additional feature has been added to the website since its initial launch this past year. On the top banner there is a new “Search” option. This link will allow you to type in your name and pull up all of the horses that you have points on in the current season. You can then click on the horses name and it will take you directly to a report for that horse. In closing we wish you all a fantastic 2015 season and thank you for your support of this past season!

2014 National
PoleBending Association Championships
T
Held at C Bar C Expo Center, Cloverdale, indiana Story by Dirk Carnahan - Pictures provided by: NPBA and Puhl’s Photography
he National Pole Bending Association’s championship show for 2014 was a huge success. As always, the championship show brought the fastest pole benders from every corner of the country, as well as tough competitors from Canada. The Midwestern states of Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, and Kentucky were well represented. Other fast pole horses came from Pennsylvania, New York, Florida, Texas, Oklahoma, California, Tennessee, and many other states to compete for the over $60,000 payout and for titles and bragging rights in the pole bending world. The weekend featured countless world champion horses and riders pushing the limits of speed. The crowd was entertained by more than forty five 19 second runs and the constant possibility of witnessing an 18 second run. Friday night, as always, was highlighted by the Pole Bending Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Dinner. The nominating committee agreed on an impressive list of inductees and Lauri Givens and her team put together an impressive evening. Steve Ramsey did a very fine job hosting the ceremony and keeping things moving and interesting. 2014 Inductees presented to the capacity crowd of nearly 200 were: Lloyd and Maxine Triplett, long time supporters of the sport, were inducted into the Hall of Fame as recipients of the Stephanie Marcum Sportsmanship award. The Tripletts had been diverted back to the hos-
pital on their way to the ceremony and were there in spirit, if not in person. Brad Wagner was inducted as an exhibitor based on his long record of success and excellence. Ron Wolfe, who was hospitalized at the time, had his induction speech for Brad read to the audience. Ron missed his true calling as a comedian and entertainer and had the crowd laughing throughout. Amy Mclung flew in from California for the induction of her amazing horse The Flying Bug. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Bridges appeared for the induction of their incredible horse, Obvious Color Dooette. As the Bridges’ talked about their horse as a friend and family member many of the audience laughed, smiled, and wiped away tears.

The NPBA honored the late Stephanie Marcum with the Stephanie Marcum Amateur Championship, sponsored by Neace Lukens. Brannon Riley on Speed Ball Tucker led a very fast field by winning the first go with a 19.833. Stephanie Marcum’s long time horse and partner Moon Struck Sue placed 6th in the 1st go with a 20.237. Colleen Hershey won the 2D on Hobbys Back in Black with a 20.955 and Jordin Cuppy and Doc O Golden Lynx won the 3D with a 21.950. In the second go Michael Hulsinger and Jones Is On Fire paced the field with a 19.639. Kris Hale and Shesa Hitbylightning won the 2D in 20.656 and the 3D winner was Kristine Nagy on Conquistador Blend in 21.723. The 1D Amateur Champions were Brannon Riley and Speed Ball Tucker. The 2D Champion was Laurette Sumners and Lightnings Bold and the 3D Champions were Karen Lloyd and Redneck Redeye. The NPBA Youth Championship sponsored by Reveal 4-n-1 saw 28 riders compete for a big payday, a custom NPBA 4-wheeler and bragging rights as the youth champion. In the first go Larkin Jones and Exitabull Lady paced the field with a 19.818. The 2D was won by Lydia Milhouse and her fine horse Fancy Pants running a very respectable 21.080. The first go 3D winner was Brooklyn Hoskins and Im Lucky To Be Alive who covered the course in 22.398 seconds.
Friday night was capped off with an exciting sponsor/director race. The winners were Brian Foushie 1D, Kristine Nagy 2D and Doni Farr 3D. The Merial $10,000 added Open Pole Bending opened the show with 100 fast horses. Winning the first go was Charles Peoples on Lightning Starsnbars with a blistering time of 19.346. Mike Hulsinger won the 2D with a 20.377 on Jones Is On Fire. The 3D was won by Jackie Haven and Bos Rodeo Pony with a 21.354. The 2nd go was just as fast as Trate Brown won the 1D in 19.660, Charles Peoples won the 2D on Strong Tap in 20.669 and Jackie Haven and Bos Rodeo Pony won the 3D again, this time with a 21.686. Charles Peoples was the Open Champion and Reserve Champion. His winning average time on Lightning Starsnbars was 19.599. The 2D Champion was Charles’ son, Nathan Peoples, on Make N Lightning in 20.610 and the 3D champions were Denny Dunn and Abeulos Grace at 21.753.
The second day was just as exciting as Ross Ramsey and Shesa Joeyful Jet won the 1D with a 19.607, Larken Jones and Tiny Ball of Fire won the 2D with a 20.633 and the 3D winners were Shelby Wright and Jazabell in 22.200. Ross Ramsey and Shesa Joeyful Jet took home the title, the cash and the 4-wheeler as 1D Youth Champions. The 2D Champion was Caitlyn Colvin on Mills King Racheal and the 3D Champion was Brooklyn Hoskins on Im Lucky To Be Alive. The one go only Kindergarten Championship showcased 16 of the best three year olds in the country. The $1,000 added by HRC was part of the incentive for these 16 horses to show glimpses of what can be expected in the years to come. John Smith and Redneck Bazinga led the way with a sizzling 19.910. Brannon Riley and Dans Flaming Venture were the only other team in the 1D with a 20.452. There were no qualified 2D times and much of the rest of the field were bunched together in the 3D, just behind 3D champion Jason Thomas on Lightning June Bug with a 22.264.

The NPBA Futurity Championship sponsored by Barrett Quarter Horses followed with 49 of the best junior pole horses in the world. With everyone pushing their horses to new limits, there were only 27 clean runs in the class. Brock Bawel and Sizzle Redneck was the first go winner running a very fast 19.733. The 2D was won by Troy Priddy on THR Go Dinky Go. The pair covered the distance in 20.769 seconds. The 3D 1st go winner, with a 21.747, was Karen Lloyd on one of many “Redneck” horses, Redneck Redeye. Second go winners were: 1DTrent Tobin and One Rare Redneck in 19.834, 2D-Troy Priddy May Belle Gone 20.971 and 3D-Eric Schulkers on Jimmy Miles 22.367.
The future of the sport of polebending was showcased in the NPBA Future Stars class, sponsored by Universal Media as seven Future Stars of Pole Bending competed in front of a large and vocal crowd. Kamryn Olds won the class aboard Misty in 21.813. The highlight of the Saturday Night Main Event is always the World’s Fastest Pole Bending. This year, with thanks to our sponsor Epic Leader, was no exception as 18 riders threw caution to the wind and competed for cash, prizes sponsored by MVP, the sports most recognizable trophy and the Title of World’s Fastest Pole Bender.
1D Futurity Champion was Trent Tobin and One Rare Redneck with a 19.802 Average, 2D Champion Alexa McWilliams and Lady Brimmerton at 21.305 and 3D Champion Eric Schulkers and Jimmy Miles with an average of 22.107. The one go only NPBA Open Stake Race sponsored by Jasper Engines was won by Channing McWilliams and Injoeybull in 8.214. The 2D Champions were Jordin Cuppy and Doc O Golden Lynx in 9.399 and the 3D Champions were Nadine Eubank on One More Cutter with a 13.790. The highlight of each year’s championship show is the Saturday Night Main Event. The “Main Event” is named after the predecessor to the NPBA, the Main Event Pole Bending organized and ran for many years by Hall of Famer Ross Carnahan. The NPBA Saturday Night Main Event is a crowd favorite and many spectators were on hand this year to witness the excitement. Many come away commenting on the class and sportsmanship of the NPBA family. Competitors loudly and openly cheer each other rooting for success and fast runs for all. Winning is secondary for most of the NPBA riders who just want to see great horses and riders run fast times. The Saturday Night Main Event started off with the Johne Dobbs Equine Insurance Bareback Slot Race. The crowd cheered wildly for the saddleless runs. Brandice Penner on a horse she is very familiar with, although owned now owned by the Burns family, PJs Afterburner, barely beat Larken Jones and Tiny Ball of Fire 22.139 to 22.161. Trate Brown impressed the crowd with a 20.2 second run, but was unable to leave all 6 poles standing.
Page 30
Last year’s champion, Moon Struck Sue, repeated as champion carrying Dirk Carnahan around the course in 19.647 seconds. Following
NPBA very closely were Mike Hulsinger and Jones Is On Fire with a 19.666 and Charles Peoples on Lightnings Little Lad in 19.685 and Lightning Starsnbars in 19.789. The 2D champion was Colleen Hershey on Hobbys Back in Black at 21.166. Seventeen year old Moon Struck Sue became only the 2nd horse to be named World’s Fastest Pole Bender more than once (Flaming Boogie Bug is the other) and the only horse to win back to back titles. The NPBA is already making plans for a very special 10th anniversary championship in 2015. A 4D Format is being considered to give even more horses and riders the chance to attend the biggest and best pole bending show of the year.

The Quarter Horse Racing Association of Indiana (QHRAI) held it's annual Youth Experience on June 28th at Indiana Grand Race Course. 14 youth between the ages of 16 and 18 attended. Most were from Indiana, but a couple participated from out of state. "All of the youth were special, they really seemed to enjoy each other during the day" said Vickie Duke, Chair for the 2014 QHRAI Youth Experience. "They were exceptional during the interview with their answers and plans for their futures". They got to listen to speakers about the race track on the "front side" of the business and toured the backside and talked to trainers and others who make racing Quarter Horses a part of their lives. It was a very unique opportunity for these youth to get a first hand look at all aspects of Quarter Horse Racing.
!
At the end of the day, participants took a trainers test and were graded on it. An overall winner of the day was selected based on test results and participation throughout the day. Elizabeth Seely, was selected by the youth day committee to receive a $1,000 scholarship and to represent QHRAI at AQHA's National Youth Experience, which will be held at Prairie Meadows Race Track this fall. Elizabeth is 17 years old and from Auburn, Indiana. Her family has race horses and she does 4-H barrel racing and horse judging. She would like to go to school to become a vet and is interested in being a trainer as well. The runner up for the day was Bryna Ferrara from Greensburg, Indiana. She is 16 years old and shows in 4-H dressage, english riding and she works on a rescue farm that has about 40 horses. She attended the QHRAI Youth Experience to see what types of job opportunities were available at a race track. She also received a $1,000 scholarship. QHRAI congratulations to Elizabeth and Bryna on this special recognition, and also appreciates the efforts of Vickie Duke, Vick and Christa Conway, Jill Patrick, Dianne Bennett, Jim Noel and all the trainers and professionals on the back side of the track who helped make this day a huge success. California Chrome
or 140 years, the routine has been the same. The first Saturday in May is met with pageantry and a tradition of spires, hats and juleps that eventually lend resolve to the countless questions that were asked just minutes, hours, days, weeks and even months before. While the answer is always in the form of a single horse draped in a garland of roses, another question almost immediately emerges; can this same individual accomplish a similar feat again in a mere two weeks? To answer this next question, he must first leave the Bluegrass of Kentucky and venture East to Baltimore, Maryland, at a place called Pimlico.
Top L to R: Derby winner, California Chrome, per tradition settles into historic stall 40 at the Preakness Barn; Fashion, hats and of course, pink, can be seen around Pimlico on Black-Eyed Susan day; Stopchargingmaria (outside) fights to the finish and wins the Black-Eye Susan on Friday before the Preakness; Trainer, Michael Matz, of Barbaro fame, takes a moment to sign autographs for fans; Revolutionary (outside) roars down the the center of the track to win the Pimlico Special the day before the Preakness

In 2014, “he,” is California Chrome. After his victory in the Kentucky Derby, the threeyear-old, California-bred found himself bedded down in historic stall 40 at the Preakness Barn, behind the Pimlico grandstand. Here, he began preparations for the Preakness Stakes with the help of his connections of an old-school trainer in Art Sherman and Dumbass Partners in co-owners Steve Coburn and Perry Martin. ‘Chrome worked well over the Pimlico surface and appeared primed for another big effort in an American Classic. Still, the reviews weren’t all positive as many questioned the surprisingly slow final time of the Kentucky Derby as well as the “new shooters” he would be facing; horses that were fresher than he and potentially equally talented. Social Inclusion appeared the biggest threat of all after his third place finish in the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct. Despite fading in the stretch, many viewed his performance as a significant step forward and believed he could take a similar step if he could harness his incredible speed and set reasonable fractions on or just off the

pace. Another strong challenger was the West Coast invader, Bayern. Similar to Social Inclusion, he possessed raw, untapped potential and early speed with the only question of ability remaining how far he could carry that speed. Yet still, there were also two Derby entrants in Ride On Curlin and General A Rod aiming to take another crack at ‘Chrome after reasonable excuses for their disappointing finishes. However, equally if not more concerning was the post position draw resulting in California Chrome being assigned post 3 and even further inside than he was for the Derby. Again, the fear was that the early speed in Social Inclusion and Bayern for example, existed to his outside and could likely press him down and on the rail. Indeed the trip became of the utmost concern. If ‘Chrome could break away from the unfavorable rail (a position he historically struggled racing in) and secure a similar trip to that of the Derby, he would be difficult to beat as he was supremely talented and more accomplished than his counterparts.
If that weren’t enough, it was noted by media that California Chrome had been heard “coughing” just two days before the race. While speculation of his health swelled, assistant trainer and Art’s son, Alan Sherman, explained there was a blister that resurfaced in ‘Chrome’s throat and briefly caused the cough. However, he stated that California Chrome had a similar incident prior to the Derby and that it was and will again be successfully treated. He assured the public that the colt was healthy and sound and that the blister would in no way impact his ability to race. With that, the only remaining questions would be answered on the race track. California Chrome broke cleanly from the gate as Victor Espinoza immediately looked to his outside and aimed ‘Chrome for a clear path off the rail. Pablo Del Monte left quickly as well and crossed in front of

California Chrome while aiming for the lead. Espinoza continued his move off the rail and tucked behind Pablo Del Monte while closing to the outside on Social Inclusion. Meanwhile, the filly Ria Antonia flashed unexpected early speed and moved toward the lead as the field crossed under the wire for the first time. Similarly unexpected, Social Inclusion didn’t show his early speed and instead settled off the pace and in fifth to the outside and behind the Derby winner as the field moved into the clubhouse turn. Pablo Del Monte set an opening 1/4 mile of 23.56 seconds as he led his contenders around the turn with Ria Antonia to his outside and California Chrome safely just behind and outside her in third. General A Rod followed in fourth with Social Inclusion maintaining his surprising position in fifth. The field maintained this position down the backstretch and through a 1/2 mile in 46.85 seconds and 3/4 mile in 1:11.06. Heading into the far turn Ria Antonia began to fade and Social Inclusion moved around California Chrome and pushed for the lead. ‘Chrome responded and fired into second while challenging Pablo Del Monte. California Chrome and Social Inclusion easily left the tiring pacesetter and rounded the edge of the far turn heads apart. Ride On Curlin moved from second to last and into contention in third and to the outside of Social Inclusion. However, as he had done in the Derby and previous races, California Chrome again showed tremendous turn of foot as he opened up daylight on Social Inclusion midway down the stretch. Ride On Curlin kept grinding until he over-

The final time was 1:54.84; a legitimate time and the fastest since Big Brown in 2008. ‘Chrome had answered all the questions and asserted himself as a blossoming Superstar. However, of the other twelve since Affirmed, none were able to win the Belmont Stakes and sweep the Triple Crown. In fact, most recently, the Belmont results were particularly difficult to accept when for instance Big Brown was eased and did not finish the race in 2008 and I’ll Have Another never even entered the starting gate as he was scratched and retired the day before the race.
Those attempts, however, were all in the past. This is 2014, and “he” is still California Chrome. If ever there was a chance to end the 36 years full of heartbreak and missed opportunities, maybe this was it. Then, at the end of the day and much like before, one question was answered and another followed. Can this same individual accomplish a similar feat again in a mere three weeks? To answer this next question, he must first travel to New York City and attempt to pass “The Test of the Champion,” the Belmont Stakes.

Steve Heuertz; Steve’s horse and loyal friend, Cowboy, an 19-year-old, Red Dun Quarter Horse It started with a horse named Cowboy. Disregarded and discounted, this nine-year-old Red Dun Quarter Horse left his life as a ranch horse in South Dakota and ventured a new path into the life of Steve Heuertz in 2004. Shortly thereafter, a bond was formed that fully catapulted Steve into the world of the horse where he became fascinated with the wonderful capabilities of this majestic animal. Of particular interest were the speed, endurance and competitive spirit demonstrated by the equine heroes within the sport of Thoroughbred Racing. Although initially satisfied with observing from afar, Steve became increasingly captivated by the sport and turned toward capturing the splendor of racing via his other passion, photography. The result was a recipe where he could combine his great love for horses, racing and photography into one harmonious blend that was greater than the sum of its parts. Since then, racing has taken Steve across the country to such wonderful places as Saratoga Race Course, Churchill Downs, Santa Anita Park, Pimlico Race Course, Belmont Park, Keeneland and Hooiser Park. During these travels, Steve has been fortunate to witness and photograph equally wonderful races such as the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes (racing’s famed Triple Crown) as well as the Travers Stakes, Santa Anita Derby, Indiana Derby, Stephen Foster Handicap and Breeders’ Cup, among others. However, residing in the Chicago suburb of St. Charles, IL, Steve regularly frequents Arlington Park and Hawthorne Race Course where he has enjoyed capturing magnificent races like the Arlington Million and Hawthorne Gold Cup. Today, Steve’s passion for horses, racing and photography is like a fire that continues to be stoked. While either behind the lens capturing the thrill of a Grade 1 race or in the saddle loping around a field with Cowboy, Steve has learned to operate under the simple truth that the more he is able to involve the horse in his life, the happier his days become.

Then, all of a sudden I caught wind of a cowgirl shooting challenge!!! ! Tonya the Director of the 4-H in Hamilton County challenged Patricia from the Harrison Press at Register publications to a cowboy mounted shooting match! They both picked the horse Rugged Slider owned by Bobby Ruwe to ride thru 3 stages of competition. Neither of the two (soon to be official cowgirls) rides horses and neither of the two knew much about shooting. Slider helped them as much as he could taking them each through the patterns to shoot each balloon, the rest was up to them. It was certainly a close competition, however in the end it was Patricia that edged out Tonya by just one balloon target. As we were packing up our equipment I over heard Tonya tell Patricia, “you might have won this year...but...just wait till next year”! Our next shoot is July 26th, we will be celebrating The National Day of the Cowboy. Our sponsor, Fagaly & Son Feeds, located in Cleves, OH, along with Tribute, have some special awards planned for the 12 divisions winners. You can be assured competition will be tough! and just fishing. I also enjoy helping the kids in our 4-H group learn different disciplines with horses. I do clinics for them to show them how to groom for Showmanship, how to goat tie, rope, ride English and Western Pleasure, and Speed Events. Trail Rides and giving lessons are some of my favorites also. I know this was your first experience at All American Youth tell me about it? The All American Youth was an amazing experience for me. It was the biggest barrel run I have ever done. It was very well organized and the staff were very nice, upfront, and willing to help. What an honor to win Megan’s scholarship... what are you going to school to study and where? Winning Megan’s scholarship was such a honor (it was very humbling and exciting).

Truck- My favorite truck is usually anything which is a Ford. We haul in a F350 and I wouldn’t even think about getting any other type of truck. Trailer- I don’t really have a favorite trailer but we haul with a 4 horse Lakota with living quarters and I absolutely love the trailer we use. Movie- I love movies in general, but if I had to pick a certain movie I could watch over and over and never get tired of watching then I would probably pick a comedy such as My Cousin Vinnie. Food- My favorite food is any type of steak. I could probably eat a steak every day of my life and be very happy. Music- I listen to all types of music and don’t really have a favorite. If one looked through the music on my phone they would find nearly every type of music created. ride and train horses. I know this was your first experience at All American youth tell me about it? And you made finals? - The All American Youth Show was a great experience. It was great to see so many great youth riders there and to be able to compete against them. It’s nice to know there are so many young talented riders who are into the sport of barrel racing and love it as much as I do. I was able to make the finals on my Jr. horse (I nicknamed Kelso) which topped off the whole experience of being at the All American Youth Show. I was just ecstatic to be able to run in the finals and meet so many talented and wonderful people. What an honor to win Megan’s scholarship... what are you going to school to study and where? Winning Megan’s Memory Scholarship was the greatest honor I have ever received. When I first learned of
winning the scholarship I was overwhelmed to the point of ... and if I’m being honest I can’t lie that it made me cry when I heard I had won it because of the honor associated with Megan Stockstill and its scholarship foundation. It’s hard to explain just how much this scholarship means to me. This scholarship helps tremendously in getting me through the college I’m attending which is Bellarmine University. I plan on getting my Bachelors in Laboratory Science, with a minor in pre-pharmacy, in hopes of entering pharmacy school afterwards and getting my PhD in pharmacy. Hobbies and other activities? Barrel racing and training horses is what takes up most of my time, because there is nothing I love more than barrel racing. But if I ever have some free time, I love to go and play some basketball since I played basketball for a while in school or go to an amusement park due to my love of roller coasters.

Clint is a graduate of East Central High School. His parents are Terrie VanVolkenburgh and respectively Joe Trentman. He has grown up in the horse world, both parents have rode almost all their life...Clint's grandfather as some of you may remember was the late Terry VanVolkenburgh, who would run up and down the fences when his daughters would run barrels. Clint began barrel racing at the age of 4 with a pony, then went on to particpate in Jr. Rodeo and his favorite event was the sheep riding, hard to believe he is now a barrel racer. He has won the Ohio Youth NBHA and Indiana Youth and Open NBHA , he has also won the Congress youth barrel four times, and was runner up in the Congress Sweepstakes. He placed at Josey Jr. world numerous times, and won the NBHA Youth World 1D in 2006. He loves to barrel race and is now trying his hand at the futurities. In Clint's spare time he mows grass for a part time job and is also very active in his church where he and his cousins are bible school helpers. Clint also volunteers one day a week at a school in Cincinatti where he spends time tutoring other kids in reading.

eam Indiana returned from the Junior High Division National Finals with many great memories and experiences. Des Moines, Iowa offered a great location with a small town atmosphere. When members weren’t competing, they could hang out at their campsites or hop in a golf cart and grab a bite to eat, do a little shopping, or join in some of the fun activities that were planned. The experience at Nationals is different than so many other experiences for our junior rodeo kids. This rodeo brings the Top 4 members in each event from each state, and pulls them all together for one week. The Junior High Division members experience tough competition, bigger crowds, and bigger jitters. They also get the opportunity to meet and talk to so many other kids who are just like them and love to do what they do. There were many personal bests and great runs and rides made by Team Indiana. Congratulations to Avery Whitten for making back in the Short-Go in Boys Breakaway Roping and also to Melanie Hasler for being elected into the National Junior High Division Secretary position.
Avery Whitten
My name is Avery Whitten and I recently just finished competing in the National Junior High Finals Rodeo in Des Moines, Iowa as a 6th grader. My first year went pretty well; I was the only one to make it to the short-go from my state, and I got 18th in the nation in boys breakaway roping. My favorite part about Des Moines was field day, and even though I’m pretty sure we got dead last in each race/event at field day I still had a great experience in Des Moines and I can`t wait till next year.

Wow! Iowa was awesome! From the competition to the activities to the people you met and the sites you saw! It was just fantastic! Just being there was an honor let alone stepping into that arena! Both of my horses Bunny and Fancy ran their hearts out and performed their best just for me! I was blessed to have them with me! And even though I didn’t make it to the short-go I know I tried my hardest and gave it my all! Going to nationals was the BEST experience I could have had out of any rodeo! I can’t wait to go back next year and hopefully make it to the short-go! But the only thing I could really say to describe that experience is ‘WOW!’

My experience in Iowa was amazing! It was a great way to end my Junior High rodeo years, I made it in goats, shooting sports, and ribbon roping. My favorite part of the trip was probably goats, it is one of my favorite events! The arena was REALLY small and some girls were tying 8 seconds! We had a field day and played volleyball too! The dances were fun and I got to meet a bunch of new people! Although it rained a lot i enjoyed it a lot! Overall my experience in Iowa was amazing!

Hi, my name is Kolt Keller and I am from Frankfort, Indiana. I competed in three events; breakaway roping, ribbon roping, and goat tying. My favorite part about nationals what competing against the top kids in the nation including Australia and Canada. They also had three dances, volleyball tournament, field day and you could go to the trade show. I had a blast and cannot wait to go back next year.

My experience at nationals was AMAZING!!! I loved it! I met sooo many new people a lot of people were really nice! I made it to nationals in barrels ribbon roping and light rifle shooting. My first run was barrels and I got a 16.4 but it was clean. My second run was ribbion roping and my partner missed, but that’s ok! Second barrel run I got a 16.1 but knocked the third barrel. Over all my experience was amazing!! I meet a lot of nice people and am still in touch with a few! At the dances, Alyssa Abbi, Maci, and I (my friends who made it) hung out. Alyssa and I danced a lot together!!! It was a lot of fun! I’m glad I had the experience and it also taught me about things to do with my horse and more!

This year was my second year to qualify for the National Jr. High Finals. I was proud to qualify in all three events, Break Away Calf Roping, Ribbon Calf Roping and Chute Dogging. The livestock at this year’s finals was fantastic! The calves ran hard and the steers made us work to wrestle them down. It was truly a wrestling match. I mostly enjoyed the family atmosphere that rodeo always provides. I traveled to Iowa with my parents and seven siblings. I had my own private fan club. After 10 rodeo performances, my twin four year old sisters, Maggie and Ali, can now sing the National Anthem; word for word! Now that Nationals is in the books, the IJRA members are looking forward to their State Finals which will be held at C bar C in Cloverdale, IN on August 9th and 10th. Admission is free and we always love a great crowd to cheer on our great Indiana cowboys and cowgirls. We will be drawing the winning ticket for the Merhow Victory 2 Horse Bumper Pull trailer (or $4500) on August 9th at the State Finals. Make sure to get your tickets!
Blake Andis
The Cinch National Finals was like the NFR but with lots of kids. My favorite part was when I caught my calf in 4.44 seconds and when I jumped off my horse to tie the goat for the second time. I also like when I get to hang out with my friends when I am not rodeoing. I also like to cheer on my teammates when they’re up.

apologize that I don’t know the names of plants. I’m sure it goes back to having to weed every garden my father planted, so I’ve chosen to know nothing about them. Unless there is a luscious ear of corn hanging from it or I can cut it and feed it to my horses I’m really not that interested; so I have no idea what these particular type of plants are called. I’ve walked by them a 100 times on my “photo hunts” and noticed them because they grow in big patches; but I have no great “soul level connection” with them. Can’t say that I even like them much. I’d give them a “60” on the “In Honor of Dick Clark, American Bandstand Rate Your Plant” segment of today’s post (if you’re old enough, you’ll understand - “Great green color, Dick; but I just can’t dance to it.”) So, here’s your picture of a plant for the day.

the “not so nice, not so clean, not so good smelling clothes of the man in the checkout line in front of me” (maybe, it was a choice between washing detergent and food at their house); or, the “lady, you could stand to go on a diet, not go to the dessert table again” thought in my head at Golden Corral (maybe, years of physical, psychological, and/or emotional abuse has left her wounded in her soul). {And, if I’m the only one that has those thoughts; then I’m sorry I included you; and I’ll pray for your problem with honesty. (That was a joke, kinda!) Yours might not be the same as mine; but we all do it one way or another.} There is beauty in all of us; sometimes, unfortunately, no one takes the time to see it! I find the beauty in pictures that maybe no one else would see; and honestly, I give myself a little pat on the back. I encourage people to take a snapshot in their day to appreciate the beauty that God created. But, I forget that God created the kid with sagging shorts; the man with the dirty clothes; and the woman that might be a little overweight. And oh, by the way, he created me with ALL my imperfections! Today, I’m going to find the beauty in someone I’ve paid little attention to before. Join me?
LivExceptionally, Chris
I thought in my photographic brilliance (that’s a joke, my friends), I’d get some unusual shots of these plants and the rising sun; and thus, the shot of Isabella I posted yesterday. So, I l got down in the wet grass on a chilly morning; ready to capture some brilliant shot that no one else would see; and............ This is what is under the those boring, green leaves! Made me stop and think (yes, while lying in the wet grass); “Wow, self, sometimes you don’t know the beauty of something under the surface; UNLESS, you take the time to discover it from a new perspective.” Kinda like the people all around us. We are all so judgmental in our own ways. We take note so critically of those around us. It might be the

CHRISTIAN COWBOY COLLECTION
By Christa Conway
God, Why Won’t You Answer Me? Have you ever asked that question? I have. I have found myself felling like God has forgotten me on more than one occasion. Now, I want you to know that I know that is not true. I know it, but the devil will lie to us and try to convince us that and many other lies. I have something that reminds me that God is always near and always listening....if anyone has “moved,” it was me. I’ll fill you in. It started with a poem that I ran across on facebook (or maybe an email.) I don’t know the author or where credit is due, but I love the poem: “Don’t Miss Out” ~Author unknown~ The man whispered, “God, speak to me And a meadowlark sang. But, the man did not hear So the man yelled “God, speak to me!” And, the thunder rolled across the sky. But, the man did not listen. The man looked around and said, “God let me see you” And a star shined brightly. But, the man did not notice. And, the man shouted, “God show me a miracle!” And, a life was born. But, the man did not know. So, the man cried out in despair, “Touch me God, and let me know you are here!” Whereupon, God reached down and touched the man. But, the man brushed the BUTTERFLY away and walked on. Don’t miss out on a blessing because it isn’t packaged the way that you expect. HE hears us... but do we hear HIM? That is such a simple message, but it speaks volumes if we take the time to stop and think about the ways that God can communicate with us if we are willing to listen. My devotion this morning started off with the same simple message, to open our hearts and our minds and allow God to reach out to us in ways we would not normally consider.
Page 54
This devotion also mentioned the birds singing, but also went on to include many other daily occurrences as well as the obvious one, HIS WORD, THE BIBLE.
So, when a bird happens to be perched outside your window, just singing away, know that little message has been sent from your Heavenly Father.
God doesn’t move or change. He is constantly reaching out to us. A preacher at our revival last week said that some people are waiting on God to come down and smack them in the face for an answer to their question or prayer. He then went on to say that God already gave us the answers we need. They are in His word! We just don’t take the time to really seek Him in that way.
When a butterfly lands on your arm or a horse brushes you with their nose, think of it as a way that you have been “touched” by your creator.
I am guilty of praying for a “quick fix” or an obvious answer, but God wants more from us! It isn’t about Him reaching for us - it’s about us reaching for and seeking Him! He wants a relationship with us and until we realize that we have to put in a little effort, we’ll never really truly realize how great He is! He loves us so much, but He wants us to choose Him!
When you don’t know what to do and you find the perfect scripture by “accident,” it wasn’t an accident. He can communicate with us however He wants, it all belongs to Him.
When you are feeling alone and the phone just happens to ring and a friend had you on their mind.....no coincidence, that’s God sending comfort through another on of his children.
Reach out to the one who made you and then listen for, look for...feel his reply. Happy Trails & God Bless! Christa
On the Trail
By Brother Brad Curtis of Mountain Top Cowboy Church
FRONTIER FAITH Josh looked down at the river From high upon a bluff Said I think we can cross Surly it can’t be that rough
Yep I know it’s been rainin` But now it’s clear and sunny That’s where I’m headed To the land of milk and honey
Josh and Cal crossed the river While the others rode away They stepped off their ponies Kneeled down to pray
Skip just shook his head Mumbled under his breath I swear he is blind It’s gonna be our death
Cal rode up to Josh Looked him in the eye Said we’re burnin` daylight That ol` river is runnin` dry
Josh said Lord thank you For Cal my pard and friend We’ve been ridin` together And will be till the end
Turnin` to his pard Said Josh the waters high I know we’re scoutin` But I don’t wanna die
They headed down mountain To the raging river Skip said I a’int goin` Just call me a lillie liver
But thank you most of all For usin` this ol` cowhand To cross that ol` river Into the promise land
Josh kind`a laughed Said well I’m headed across That there is the frontier And I’m ridin` for the boss
Josh said now Skip We’re gonna cross With that he pulled his hat down And put the iron to his hoss
Numbers 13:27 And they told him, and said, We came unto the land whither thou sentest us, and surely it floweth with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it.
Josh said boys we are hands I think some of the best You can stay here if you want But I’m`a pushin` west
Cal let out a yee haw Then the grabbed the horn When he hit the water Yelled, this is why I was born

One Last (& most important) thought… Salvation is a gift and a choice...... Read past issues of our Christian Cowboy Collection and the Christian Barrel Racer’s Newsletter at the website below!
Jesus died on the cross as the final sacrifice for our sins. He was resurrected on the 3rd day and he defeated death and Satan for us. All we have to do is believe that He beat death, acknowledge it with our words and accept Him as our personal savior. That’s when the rebirth happens and we are changed! He then promises us eternal life with Him in Heaven! You can’t earn your way into Heaven; you have to accept His gift of salvation. So many people think they “aren’t good enough” to get to Heaven… But… Salvation is a GIFT from God and you don’t earn a gift. Gifts are given to you and for the gift to be yours, you have to accept it. All we have to do is accept this wonderful gift. I know I have…won’t you?
But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. Romans 5:15 For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Romans 10: 9-10

Pedigree binders may also be personalized by uploading PDF cover pages for each binder as well as for each horse within a binder and can include logos, photos, and video links. “Many breeding farms and Thoroughbred owners currently maintain hardcopy binders or books with pedigrees for reference,” said Carl Hamilton, chairman and president of TJCIS. “This new service will simplify the organization and sharing of this information in a professional state-of-the-art presentation, and it should be a valuable tool for owners and other industry professionals.” Additional information about the Pedigree Binder, including a sample binder, is available at equineline.com/pedigreebinder/. The Jockey Club Information Systems Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of The Jockey Club, is an industry leader in the areas of technology and information services for industry professionals, including owners, breeders, trainers and farm personnel. TJCIS uses state-ofthe-art technology to enhance the services it provides through equineline.com as well as its cataloging and software sales and consulting divisions. THOROUGHBRED CHARITIES OF AMERICA AWARDS OVER $512,000 IN GRANTS
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Thoroughbred Charities of America (TCA) announced today grants totaling $512,105 have been awarded to 74 Thoroughbred industry-related non-profits that work to uphold TCA’s mission.
July 16, 2014 - Attendees who register for the inaugural Thoroughbred Owner Conference in Lexington, Ky., scheduled for October 13 – 16, 2014, by Friday, August 15, will receive an iPad mini as a bonus upon arrival at the conference, it was announced today.
TCA distributes grants to several categories of Thoroughbred industry related nonprofits including rescue, rehabilitation and adoption organizations; backstretch and farm employee programs; therapeutic riding programs; and research organizations. Grant applications for the 2015 grant cycle will be available on www.tca.org in early January.
Among the activities planned for the four-day conference are panels featuring successful owners discussing their approaches to ownership, sales and bloodstock professionals discussing the search for talented equine athletes, behind-the-scenes tours of some of the world’s leading breeding operations, social events where attendees can gather to meet and network with other owners and industry professionals, a keynote address from Hall of Fame golfer and Thoroughbred owner Gary Player, and a VIP day of racing at Keeneland Race Course.
“We are very pleased to announce our 2014 grants,” said TCA president Dan Rosenberg. “These grants are only possible due to the generosity of our donors; without their support these grants would not be possible. We are committed to being a good steward of any and all donations made to TCA and, accordingly, employ an extensive application and review process. Our 2014 grantees are working hard to uphold our mission and we are proud to support them.”
The iPad mini will be pre-loaded with a full schedule of events, biographies on all speakers and panelists, as well as maps and directions to various venues. “The iPad mini is our way of thanking individuals who have shown such enthusiastic support of our first Thoroughbred Owner Conference,” said Gary Falter, vice president of operations for OwnerView. “This conference epitomizes OwnerView’s mission to attract and retain owners in Thoroughbred racing, and we’ve built an agenda designed to be educational, informative, entertaining, and rewarding for all attendees.” The conference is being hosted by OwnerView, the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association, and The Jockey Club at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Ky. Designed for both experienced and prospective owners, the event is being co-presented by Del Mar, Keenel-
TCA has granted over $20 million to more than 200 Thoroughbred-related charities since its inception in 1990. TCA grants funds to organizations that successfully meet the criteria set forth in its annual grant application. Formed in 1990, TCA’s mission is to provide a better life for Thoroughbreds, both during and after their racing careers by supporting retirement, rescue and research and by helping the people who work with them. TCA raises money for distribution to charitable organizations that work to uphold its mission. From 2000-2013, more than 95% of TCA’s expenditures were allocated to program services including direct grants. Donations to TCA are always accepted and can be made as direct donations or as donations in lieu of flowers, birthday gifts or other occasions. TCA’s largest annual fundraiser is a Stallion Season Auction held each January. For more information please visit www.tca.org. Barks N Bits
with our favorite Jack Russel Terrier... Bella &
Miss Maybelline)
It’s a 3-Ring Circus Around this Place That’s right, I’ll be the first to admit it.... living here is never less than a good source of conversation (obviously.) I mean, i seem to have some pretty crazy stuff to share with you people each month. Can you imagine what I don’t let you in on?
Cotton is visiting with his person for a few months. And to think I was worried about the rooster moving in...ha! Now I have a “look alike” with a constant smirk on his face. Oh, I know, the people think he is as cute as can be with his underbite. Hey, I can show my teeth too....wanna see? Just kidding, I really like Cotton. He is a little more mellow, like me, and we get a kick out of watching Chuck the Rooster chase that nosy little weiner-dog, Miss Maybelline around. I’m telling you, that never gets old!! (3-ring circus!!!)
Before we go to much farther, let me just point out that the picture at the top there is not me. That is my new friend, Cotton. He looks a whole lot like me, but he is not a Jack Russell Terrier, he is a Rat Terrier (although I’ve yet to see him terrorize any rats.)
I’m thinking I need to look into starting a YouTube Account and videoing some of the craziness that goes on around here. I’d probably end up in Hollywood on some reality TV show with all of the “likes” I’d get.
Bella
Until next month, Thinking of a YouTube name....

ongratulations to Linda Dalby! She knew a few of the ladies in this photo. We’ll try to help her out with the rest. Linda’s mother, Mona Cummings is in the picture. (Linda chose to have her free subscription sent to her mom.) The year was 1963 and the ladies are members of the GBRA (Girls Barrel Racing Association) of Indiana. Some of these ladies were instrumental in forming the GBRA-I. We had to do a little investigating and think we have them identified (98%) correctly.
