LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Merry Christmas!!!!

That’s right - it’s that time of year again....Wow, it seems like I just finished up putting away my decorations from last year, and now I am dragging them back out again. In other words....this past year has flown by! I’ve been told that the older you get, the faster the time seems to pass.....I am now starting to believe it. Although Christmas morning seems to bring out the kid in all of us, including me. We have certain family traditions that we remember every year at this time. It all starts with decorating the house the weekend after Thanksgiving. Christmas shopping with the kids always includes a frozen hot chocolate at the mall. Christmas Eve we are all dressed in our new Christmas PJs (our one early present) as we read aloud the original Christmas story of the baby Jesus in the manger. Christmas morning (after Santa has been here) we spend together by the tree exchanging gifts. Of course, later in the day - all of the horses in the barn get an apple or carrot - depending on their preference. These aren’t extraordinary traditions that we enjoy....but they are traditions nonetheless. Each year, as our children grow older, they have come to expect something as simple as a frozen hot chocolate, a new pair of PJs, a story from the bible on Christmas Eve and apples to give the horses. They most likely will not remember what year they got that Ipod or that new video game....but hopefully the will remember the traditions. I hope you all have a great month, and an especially Merry Christmas. Until next month, ......Remember the reason for the season, Start a Tradition and remember to count your blessings on horseback... God Bless and ride safe, Christa Conway

Settin’ It Straight

We have a clarification to go along with one of our advertiser pages in the November issue. In the advertisement for Miller Ranch Stallions it should read “Miller Ranch will be giving a $10,000 bonus to the breeder of the first 2yr old stakes winner in Indiana from a Miller Ranch stallion!” This should answer any questions regarding this awesome offer from Miller Ranch! See their ad in this month’s issue for more info on their stallions.

Family Album We would like to try and create a “Family Album” of the Barrel Horse World folks. If you visit Barrel Horse World and would like to be included in the “Family Album,” send us a picture of yourself and your screen name. Send picture and name to thehorseresource@msn.com

We’re hoping to attract more sponsors for next year and really grow this into something special for the East Coast!” In addition to the derby and futurity weekend, two NRCHA-sanctioned shows ran Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The shows, each $1,000 added, paid more than $5,900. The 2010 event season and weekend culminated with a clinic by the weekend’s judge, renowned trainer and only woman to win the Snaffle Bit Futurity, Sandy Collier.

“I had so much fun,” said Collier. “I was surprised at the quality of the cow horses and their riders and trainers and how many cow horse enthusiasts there are!!” Collier also added she plans to come back on 2011 for a two day clinic since there was such a great response to 2010s clinic. Without its generous sponsors, none of this would be possible. QHRAI News continued..... Champion of Champions). She’s the best thing I’ve ever ridden. She’s unbelievable.” Trainer Donnie Strickland (Feature Jess Rockin, winner): “You know what? This might be her track. She really loves the mud; I was hoping for a muddy track, but it doesn’t matter. I’d like to thank the Reeds for giving me the opportunity to train this mare. There can’t be a better horse.” Owner Heath Reed of Reed Land & Cattle Company (Feature Jess Rockin, winner): “We were trying to get her qualified to this deal and we went all the way to Prairie Meadows with her (to compete in a regional qualifying race) and tried to do good up there. We got beat up there. Donnie said we need to haul here down there (to Fair Grounds for a regional qualifying race on September 25). I said, ‘Do what you gotta do.’” “We talked about it (her running in the Champion of Champions) on Monday. Most people probably thought we were crazy (for already making airline reservations for her to fly to Southern California in anticipation of running in the Champion of Champions), but Donnie said this mare has run big down here. She ran huge again this time. About Monday or Tuesday, she’ll be going to California. “When we sent her to Donnie in Florida (at Hialeah Park) last year she won a stakes and broke the track record. Then I ran her at Remington and she got beat by Spit Curl Diva by a nose and Donnie said, ‘I’m stakes-winning Donnie and you’re stakes-placed Heath.’ I said, ‘I understand. Will you take her back so I don’t get her beat again?’” Jockey Joe Ruiz (Rylees Boy, second): “When you come to this kind of a race and you have a chance at the Champion of Champions, anything else is disappointing. He ran a good race, but I was expecting to win so I’m not a very good sport. The 10-horse just beat us. You come for one purpose – to get the win and go to the Champion of Champions.” Jockey Jarrod Deschamp (Stolis Winner, Quarter Horse racing’s new all-time earnings leader, third): “He ran a good race. The inside’s a lot deeper here. He ran his tail off. He’s a good horse and you have to put him up there as the best. He’s probably the best one I ever rode. He got away good but they just ran a little better.” Trainer Heath Taylor (Stolis Winner, Quarter Horse racing’s new all-time earnings leader, third): “He ran a phenomenal race. He got away from the gate up on his feet and got away really good. It was a tremendous field of horses. It kind of played out how I saw it all week. I had prayed and prayed and prayed to draw anywhere on the outside half of the racetrack. I don’t want to make excuses – they did a great job with the racetrack – but I would have loved to have been outside. The rider said he ran super; he just got beat. “They (Feature Jess Rockin) ran a track-record time. The horse had already had a start here and ran phenomenal. You can’t take anything away from the horse that won the race.” You still must be proud of the earnings record? “You would always like to do it with a winning effort but, hell, the horse has won more money than any Quarter Horse that’s ever had a bridle hung on his head so it’s hard to be very disappointed in the horse. “This whole earnings thing, we did it in the context of what was good for the horse. We weren’t ever just going to run the horse, run

Page 16

the horse, run the horse. He’ll never run at a lower level. But he’s relatively sound, he’s 4-years-old and he’s a gelding. If he stays good and healthy we’ll probably race him a couple more years; however, if the horse does not sustain a Grade 1-type of performance level, we won’t. It’ll be determined by the health of the horse.” What’s next for him? “We’ll take him back to Texas to our ranch. We’ll get him scoped and x-rayed. The horse is actually training great and is healthy. I’ll have to get with the owner and see. We might possibly take him to The Championship at Sunland Park (G1) for $400,000 the day after Christmas.” Breeder-Owner Jerry Windham (Stolis Winner, Quarter Horse racing’s new all-time earnings leader, third): “Refrigerator had held the record for 15 years. You hate that you end up breaking a record like his in one respect. Refrigerator, we ran against him. We beat him once. He beat us once. We knew him well and he was a great, great horse. It’s an honor to have the record. “We’ve been wanting to get it done all year, but it’s been a tough go. Seems like we had a lot of adversity. Just like tonight, we felt we had a little adversity because of where we drew, but that’s the way it goes. You’ve gotta run where you draw. “He broke much better. He was there until the very end. They just run by him. That’s about all you can do. “He’s just one in a million. When you look at him he’s such a tremendous individual. He’s pretty sound. He ran a good race tonight. If he’d have been out here on this outside, I don’t think they would have won.”

THE GRADE 1, $200,000 ADEQUAN DERBY CHALLENGE CHAMPIONSHIP

3-year-olds, 400 yards Jockey Alfonso Lujan (Acorn, winner): “I think he shied away from the crowd a little bit but he ran real gutsy tonight and this is a special win. He really gave 110-percent and put it all on the line.” Trainer Janet VanBebber (Acorn, winner): “This horse, I’ve always had the utmost confidence in him because he gives 100-percent. I’m very, very proud of him. I was pleased to be on the outside of the racetrack (in post 11), although a little concerned about being on the far outside because I think he labored a little bit out there. That’s the part of the racetrack that had not yet been run over this evening. Nonetheless, he prevailed because he just persevered.” Owner Rose Mary Chandler (Acorn, winner): “I’m overwhelmed, to say the least. We watched the race inside (on the monitor) so I could see him start and finish. I’m very excited.”

THE GRADE 1, $125,000 MERIAL DISTAFF CHALLENGE CHAMPIONSHIP

Fillies & mares, 3-year-olds and up, 400 yards Jockey David Brown (Spit Curl Diva, winner): “In the final strides she was getting a little tired but she gave me her all and got it done. I think the sand in this track just got her a little tired. “I’m really looking forward to (the Champion of Champions). You only get to ride a horse like this once in your lifetime. I think this race sets her up perfectly for the Champion of Champions.” Trainer Jody Brown (Spit Curl Diva, winner): “I really don’t care for those kinds of (close) finishes. She broke well. My concern always is that there’s a horse out there that she can’t see coming. She made me sweat a little bit.”

QHRAI News

continued..... Owner Tom Lepic (Spit Curl Diva, winner): “David said she labored a little bit at the end so that’s why it was close. But a win is a win. You don’t win every race by a length or two. With a race like this, you just want to win. This horse was meant to do that. It was great. “She’s now won at five different tracks in five different states at five different distances. It’s been an unbelievable year for her.” [WINNER NOTES: David Brown and Jody Brown are a husband and wife team…Spit Curl Diva will be flown to Southern California on Monday to prepare for her next start, the Champion of Champions (G1) in December at Los Alamitos.] Jockey Orlando Baldillez (Believers Gathering, second): “My mare ran her eyeballs out. She ran a great race. We can’t take nothing from her (Spit Curl Diva); she just beat us. My mare ran her race.” [ADDITIONAL NOTE: State veterinarian Dr. Tom David reported that Jesstifiably Stoli, who fell at the break, suffered a fractured pelvis, a break in her spinal cord, and paralysis of the rear limbs and quarters. “The way they break [from the gate] so hard it happened immediately,” David said. “The rider didn’t even get another step.” The mare was euthanized. Jockey David Pinon was uninjured.]

THE GRADE 2, $150,000 JOHN DEERE JUVENILE CHALLENGE CHAMPIONSHIP

2-year-olds and up, 350 yards Jockey Larry Payne (A Plain Brown Rapper, winner): “It was a little bit of a slow start and the eight-horse came out and bumped us a bit. We got about a half-length back but he really accelerated and was just on cruise mode at the end.” Trainer Bill Harris (A Plain Brown Rapper, winner): “We felt pretty confident. We believed in ‘Rapper’ all along, since (owner) Lloyd (Yother) raised him as a baby. We had him picked out from the very beginning, and he’s not let us down.” Owner Lloyd Yother (A Plain Brown Rapper, winner): “He’s had four outs, he’s won three of them and he’s won them pretty handily so we were hoping (for a victory). He’s been a nice horse. He moved well in the pasture as a baby. He looked like the real thing.” What’s next? “We’re going to run him in some derbies. We’ll just figure out what our options are. He’s sound right now, knock on wood, and hopefully he’ll remain that way and we’ll have a good 3-year-old.” Jockey G.R. Carter Jr. (Fast Movin Vic, second): “My horse broke really well. It felt like the five-horse (Feature My Lover B) may have brushed my rear hip just a little leaving the gate and kept him from getting a really good send away from there. The seven (A Plain Brown Rapper) and the ten (Loose Perry) both had me beat but my horse finished really good and got by the ten right at the wire. I was really happy with the way he ran.” Jockey Esgar Ramirez (Loose Perry, third): “They never gave me a chance to get settled. They put me in the gate, and they opened the gate, and we lost two lengths at the start. He ran a super race. I think he could have won if he would have had a chance to break better.”

THE GRADE 1, $125,000 RED CELL DISTANCE CHALLENGE CHAMPIONSHIP

3-year-olds and up, 870 yards Jockey G. R. Carter Jr. (De Passem Okey, winner): “I really liked the post position draw and how this race set up. I just let him break and he got off the shoulder of Bad Act. He changed leads when he was supposed to and made me look good.” Why didn’t we get to see one of your customary back-flip dismounts? “I hurt my foot here about a week ago; you’ll notice I got a little ol’ limp. I hate to break everyone’s hearts but there’s not going to be any back-flip.” How did you hurt your foot? “Doing a back-flip! I was out late at a benefit and about three in the morning some of my buddies talked me into doing one and I under-rotated, came around and just drove it into the ground. I think I might’ve cracked a little bone. It’s been hurting for about two weeks.” Trainer Rodney Reed (De Passem Okey, winner): “I felt real good about (this race). I liked the post position we drew and I felt good about G.R. (Carter Jr.) riding him. He broke real well, got good position, handled it with ease.” [NOTE: This race marked the final start of the year for De Passem Okey.] Owner Steve A. Holt (De Passem Okey, winner), from Guthrie, Oklahoma, works in the oilfield and raises Quarter Horses: “We got this (gelding) at Remington, we claimed him (for $7,500). We thought this horse would move up and he’s been astronomical. It’s Rodney and his staff. They’ve done a tremendous job with this horse. He’s been in the money every trip. “We got lucky. We drew a good post. Two of the big guns were outside. We thought we had a shot and sure enough we did.” Jockey Stormy Smith (Bad Act, second): “He left there and ran to the front like he was supposed to. He just got outrun today. He did his job just like he was supposed to, just like they said he would. He’s a cool old horse.” Jockey William Ives (Stone E Motion, eighth as favorite): “It was nowhere near what we planned. He wasn’t right tonight. I’m not sure why exactly but he did not want to run. He wasn’t in it. He didn’t give me near the effort that he usually does. About halfway through the turn he just kind of started fighting with me. We straightened out for home and I got him into his right lead and he responded for about 50 yards but then he just kind of floated down through there (to the finish). It just wasn’t his night.” Trainer Bill Harris (Stone E Motion, eighth as favorite): “He’s had some problems, had a bruise we’ve been fighting. It just wasn’t meant to be.” **For a detailed list of results from this event visit www. fairgroundsracecourse.com or www.aqha.com

M MATCH RACE

Cedar Rapids, Iowa October 15-17, 2010

The 2010 MIDWEST MATCH RACE was hosted by Iowa at the Iowa Equestrian Center, Kirkwood Community College, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. For those of you not familiar with the Midwest Match Race, it began back in 1968. Teresa Baumgartner provided this information: The first match was held in 1968 between Ohio (the host state) and Indiana. The 1969 match was hosted by Indiana and they invited Missouri. Missouri won and then invited six other teams ( Iowa being one of them) to the 1970 interstate match. Some of the greats running there were Pam Mack, Dottye Goodspeed, and Norita Henderson. I’m sure there were other good barrel racers, but I knew Dottye and Norita both ran for the NFR and I think Dottye made it. They were also sisters. Each state sends its top ten riders from their state association and they ride as a team. Each team member has one run on Saturday and one run on Sunday with all of the run times combined for the total team time; that being a total of 20 runs for each state’s team total. The match is hosted throughout the Midwest in a different state each year in the fall. This year, Teresa Baumgartner from Iowa brought in several picture albums from the early Match Races, which were enjoyed by everyone and brought back a lot of great memories. The weekend started off Friday night with an open jackpot barrel race with a total of 189 entries. (Results at end of story) Saturday morning began with the match meeting and pictures by Howard Sears, followed by the Women’s Grand Entry and introduction of each team’s riders. The women’s match race had a total of eight teams this year and was represented by five states (Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota and Missouri). It was an exciting race to the finish. After Saturday’s runs, Iowa had a slight lead over Minnesota (both teams with no knocked barrels). After Sunday’s run were all completed, Minnesota came out with the fastest team times and were crowned the 2010 Women’s Match Race Champions. Iowa was the Reserve Champions and Missouri took third place. As always at a match race, each state had an awesome cheering section. After the votes were tallied, Minnesota won the Spirit Award trophy and Indiana won the Best Dressed Trophy. Jenny Alders from Minnesota took home the Hard Luck Award. Katie Paige from Iowa had the fastest time on Saturday of 14.755. Diane Shelton from Illinois had the fastest time on Sunday of 14.795. The Fastest Average saddle went to Diane Shelton (29.661).

Page 23

Top: Women’s Team Champions, Minnesota Bottom: Men’s Team Champions, Iowa The Men’s match race had a total of six teams and were represented by five states (Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota and Missouri). After Saturday’s runs, the Illinois men were in the lead with Iowa men in second place. When all the runs were totaled on Sunday, the Iowa Men were crowned the 2010 Men’s Midwest Match Race Champions with Illinois Reserve Champions and Minnesota in third place. Garrett Conway from Indiana went home with the Men’s Hard Luck Award. Dave Bell from Iowa had the fastest time on Saturday for the men of 14.705. Craig Dahlen from Iowa had the fastest time on Sunday with a 14.787. Dave Bell from Iowa won the saddle for the Men’s Fastest Average with a total time of (29.616). A great time was had by all. We got to see old friends that we hadn’t seen for awhile and also made some new friends. Next year’s Midwest Match Race will be held in Ohio. Safe travels everyone and see you next year.

Burrrrrr...................

Well, living in Indiana has it’s benefits....but I am not going to talk about those today. It is December in Indiana and that means it is COLD! This means that I have to deal daily with doggie-wear...not only for myself, but for the fashion diva of the ranch - Princess Annabelle. Anytime we go out for more than a potty break - doggie wear is inevitable. Since I haven’t much choice in the matter, I have learned to be completely happy in my minihorse-type blanket. I have had it for several winters and it is your basic blue quilted-type blanket with black trim and straps....nothing fancy. It is very functional and allows me to run and chase rodents without too much trouble. It also keeps me toasty warm while I am out in the barn on a cold December day. Needless to say, I wear it without any qualms.

begin putting it on her. If she doesn’t like it, she won’t wear it. She is waaaay to picky about her doggie-wear if you ask me. She doesn’t like the blankets, she doesn’t like sweaters..... if it isn’t pink and fuzzy and “princessy” - she declines - in her own spoiled little black bark box way. I do however have to admit that it is comical watching the people try to dress the little fashion diva doggie. They’ll put a blanket or sweater on her and as soon as they turn around to bundle themselves up, she is in a pile on the floor with fuzz in her teeth as she attempts to remove or destroy her outfit - protesting their choice of doggie wear. Then the battle is on. They put one on, she takes it off....then another, then another. It is funny, but it gets tiring waiting on her to agree to wear something. If you ask me, they should just let her go outside and freeze her long little ears for a few hours....she might change her tune the next time a functionally warm blanket is the choice of the day for her. But no, they would rather add to her ever-growing wardrobe. Pink jackets, fleece pullovers and fuzzy-necked frilly doggie clothes are lying in her overflowing basket on the back porch. And guess who gets all of her rejects.....yours truly. That is right... “if she won’t wear it, Bella will.” I can’t tell you how many times I have heard that lately. I was totally fine with my functional blanket, now I am wearing girly doggie sweaters....the outside dogs chuckle at me when I am not looking, I know they do. But I don’t care, if girly is just as warm as functional, then bring it on, I won’t complain.

Princess “Hoity Toity” Annabelle is a totally different story. She will not settle for your basic mini-horse-type blanket. Oh, no. Just ask her, she is way above functional. She pitches a puppy fit and starts biting at it and trying to pull it off the minute that one of the people

Clint is a 17 year old junior he is enrolled in Abeka Academy homeschool. His parents are Terrie VanVolkenburgh and respectively Joe Trentman. He has grown up in the horse world, both parents have rode almost all their life...Clint's grandfather as some of you may remember was the late Terry VanVolkenburgh, who would run up and down the fences when his daughters would run barrels. Clint began barrel racing at the age of 4 with a pony, then went on to particpate in Jr. Rodeo and his favorite event was the sheep riding, had to believe he is now a barrel racer. He has won the Ohio Youth NBHA and Indiana Youth and Open NBHA , he has also won the congress youth barrel four times, and was runner up in the Congress Sweepstakes, placed at Josey Jr. world numerous times, and won the NBHA Youth World 1d in 2006. He loves to barrel race and is now trying his hand at the futurities. In Clint's spare time he mows grass for a part time job and is also very active in his church where he and his cousins are bible school helpers. Clint also volunteers one day a week at a school in Cincinatti where he spends time tutoring other kids in reading.

Subject: Does anyone NOT bed thier stalls/run ins? Prndi Posted 2010-11-24 8:29 AM Subject: Does anyone NOT bed thier stalls/ run ins? Elite Veteran Posts: 910 I do, but with the cost of everything horse related I was thinking of not doing it anymore. They don’t usually come in to lay down, sometimes, but not always. Do you think it’s cruel not to? trainmaster Posted 2010-11-24 8:33 AM Elite Veteran Posts: 809 Location: Too Far North If it is just a run in shelter that they can choose in or out, I wouldn’t bed it down. If it’s a stall type situation i would definitely bed it down. It doesn’t have to be a foot deep, just enough to soak up the moisture, etc. JRust Posted 2010-11-24 8:39 AM Member Posts: 57 Location: Choctaw, Oklahoma I put 2 bags per stall in the beginning of winter, but we have sandy loam soil and moisture gets soaked up pretty fast. I usually add a bag every week. our shavings are aprox 7 dollars a bag and there’s 3 stalls. I could do more, but it adds up quickly!! I rather be able to provide them with hay than comfy stuff, besides they only get put up at night and are allowed to roam free durring the day unless it’s icy out. 2 bags gives just enough coverage without building up too bad. Right now their stalls are shaving free, I just clean them out every day. IMO as long as their hoof health stays the same and you dont notice bad urine stains on them I wouldnt worry about it much, not cruel at all! BarOFarm Posted 2010-11-24 8:40 AM Mother of an Baseball All Star! Posts: 7951 Location: Michigan No stalls here but if I had them they would be bedded. I just have two large run-in areas and I don’t bed them down. I do pick poop from them but mine have a large pile of “waste” hay to snooze

in out in the sunshine from the crappy round bales we have this year that they pick through for the edible bits and the stalks are left for some good pee absorbing warmth collecting snooze areas. roanrobey Posted 2010-11-24 9:03 AM Color Coordinator Posts: 15936 Location: Slashin Ursula Bonny My stalls are dirt floored and stay pretty dry. I do not bed the stalls down if they are only staying in at night. If I have one that needs to stay in 24hrs, I will bed it down lightly. (1-2 bags of shavings) If I am foaling a mare out, I bed down heavily. I do not think its cruel to not bed down a stall, they lay down on the dirt in the pasture dont they? As long as you are keeping the stall clean and its not wet, there should not be an issue. dawnb Posted 2010-11-24 9:48 AM I keep my change in my pockets Posts: 1683 Location: MN We have a three sided shed that the can go into, we found out if we bed it they go in there more just to pee and poop. So we haven’t bedded it in years. They use it more to get out of the wind and the weather. RidingBigHorses Posted 2010-11-24 9:54 AM Elite Veteran Posts: 660 Location: Desert Land I must be real cruel. I just moved to a new house and until I can get the turn outs set up, I have my horses in 24x24’ pens, no bedding and no covers right now until I can find something reasonably priced to buy or am able to make something. Yikes! phillyincal Posted 2010-11-24 10:04 AM Elite Veteran Posts: 1179 Location: Vacaville, California I think it depends on what kind of flooring there is. My stalls have a really hard road base and DG so I have to have mats and then put shavings/pellets over. In their run in area it’s just dirt and is kind of hard, but they have plenty of soft spots to lay down out in the field. If you want to extend the use of your bedding, I want to recommend the pelleted bedding. It lasts a long time!

sassy&tessa Posted 2010-11-24 10:07 AM Dr. Ruth Posts: 6403 Location: Pretending to work... I don’t. Both the stalls and the paddocks are rubber though. Grasshopper’s pen and paddock seems fine but Lilly seems to slip a lot so I have been contemplating doing something about that, though I am not sure what just yet... wwoodsbhorses Posted 2010-11-24 10:12 AM Extreme Veteran Posts: 516 Location: in the saddle.. Mine are stalled at night or in severe weather. I have cement floors with mats now, but used to have a dirt floor that I didn’t have to bed as often. Now I am going through a ton of shavings because mats don’t absorb urine! I now am just picking stalls and putting down a half to 1/4 bag of pelleted pine or corn cob. It lasts way longer than shavings but is equally, if not more, expensive. I just put enough down to absorb the urine and soft enough to lay on for the night. I don’t do bag after bag of shaving in each stall anymore..it’s more work and money..plus a lot of it gets wasted kwanatha Posted 2010-11-24 10:37 AM Meanest Teacher!!! Posts: 4209 Location: sunny california normally no bedding. unless someone is a pig and pees in stall. I have compacted soil with matts. I leave it bare to teach them to at least pee outside. when we have a snow/ice storm i lock them up and bed them down. I put a bag of pellets on the opposite side of the feeders they tend to do their business on that side. i like pellets for soaking it up. I put shavings over the top for a bed. I don’t wet the pellets and if i just put them in dry it is a skateing rink. If the ice sticks around a while I just keep adding pellets to the off side if it is fluffy enough. some stalls have a small gradual depression on the off side in which the pee drains into. I fill it with pellets and do shavings on top. when I chean I go to the depression and get the pee patties! easy!!!! jess85 Posted 2010-11-24 10:45 AM Hot Chi-wow-wa MaMa! My horses are in at night and they lay down alot. The barn has a cement floor and even with mats and sawdust, they still get sores on their hocks. I don’t think it’s cruel. If you know your horses and they don’t lay down, do what you want! Save that money! :) Our saw dust is free, so the money thing isn’t an issue. lonestarace Posted 2010-11-24 12:07 PM Expert Posts: 2276 Location: Kansas I never did until our horses got older and started lying down more. Since their joints are kind of creaky, I use a bag for each of them in their lean-to. I keep it picked out and as dry as possible. 9 times out of 10 they’ll still find a little hill outside to lie down against vs. coming inside. livexlovexrodeo Posted 2010-11-24 12:21 PM Elite Veteran Posts: 1096 Location: Pacific Northwest We stopped bedding ours down regularly 10+ years ago. Ours have stalls they can go into whenever they want, and normally they just stand under the overhang outside the stalls. Pretty sure the only time they come IN their stalls is when I feed them in there, or if they’re locked in cause they’re sick/I need them to stay clean (and if they’re locked in, they do get bedded down). We get pretty nasty, wet weather at times and they still prefer to stand outside. rodeoveteran Posted 2010-11-24 12:21 PM I Don’t Brag Posts: 2691 I have a small indoor that usually functions as a giant run in shed. i I do have a couple of pens set up to seperate the one or two that get picked on. If I am keeping anyone up, I dump a bag of wood pellets where they like to pee. I also do this in the arena as the mares like to pee right beside one of the pens. This way, I can pull out the urine soaked bedding and anything left over

BARREL TALK mixes nicely with the dirt. When we put up the barn, everyone wanted to know if we were putting installs. I said that I didn’t want to have to clean stalls. Instead, I find myself picking the arena twice a day.....sigh, there is no winning..... I have a barn and every horse has a stall. A bedded stall. I’ve found I can bed cheaper with straw and stalls stay much dryer. Horses do go out in good weather. Runnin’w/theLord Posted 2010-11-26 8:08 AM We buy a dump truck load of riverbed sand every 4-5 months ($100) they have small thin rubber mats under feed racks to catch dropped feed but the mats were cheap we just bought truck bed liners and cut them in half, also used those mats to hang down from trailer dividers to keep from kicking each other. Big savings! BarrelRacenBeauty Posted 2010-11-26 8:20 AM Expert Posts: 2281 Location: Toto.. im in Kansas now!! I bed mine but she is in bascially 24/7 at the time. I am boarding (1st time in my life) and I dont have a turn-out/pasture for her. I put her on the hotwalker everyday and will let her play in the roundpen , but aside from that she is in a 12x14 (I believe) stall. They are hard dirt floors but after a days worth of pee (if not bedded) it smells to high heaven and really makes a mess in the stall. And for some strange reason she loves to pee right up by her hayrack so then she will stand in it to eat hay..ugh.. It makes the ground very uneven because when you try to “clean up” where its wet you bring up all of the dirt (pee mud) in that certian area. I’ve just found it easier and cleaner to bed her down (since she is in so much).... realitycheck Posted 2010-11-26 8:41 AM Tell It Like It Is Posts: 13953

Now the saddles have to be just so (and ues, I’m one of those!), I’m very aware of what bit I use and why, what material my saddle pad and cinch are made from and what feed I feed and why. And then there is the chiro, massage, specialized dental vet, etc, etc! BUT, like others I am careful where my money goes, I don’t buy into many of the “in” gadgets and I will buy the tack that fits the best not the set that has the most bling. My horses don’t get grain unless they NEED it, they don’t wear a blanket unless they are being worked, non of mine wear shoes and I try to trim their feet on my own and only call the farrier half as much. I give my own vaccines and I have been lucky that my horse only sees the vet for a float once a year. Hmmm, my horse does have a LikIt hanging in her shelter and a red horse ball under the tree this year......I guess I fall for my fair share of snake oil!!

I really miss them, showing up in a one ton gypo truck, with a huge 6ft ramp up the back no side rails, horses walked up and down using 2x4s to grab But in reality I never lost a horse nor had one die on me, we did give shots once a year and tube worm at the vet once a year. If they started to drop food the horseshoer floated there teeth right there and then, no drugs needed! In the last 2 years I have lost that many horses to unknown causes. I am returning in a way to the old days, going to use my up coming horse for everything, the local horse show circut, halter, english, western and games. Also hoping to run the 4D for fun at some big shows like a vacation not a serious adventure. I have totally forgotten what it is to just go to have fun not to win, win, win and if you don’t win you are not trying or a nothing. I am to old to worry about qualifity for anything, and just don’t have the time and money to chase anything down. I sure hope that the local stuff comes back due to the economy. I also don’t remember quite the hate we have now of each other in the deciplines, oh there was some, but really a lot more folks were out just for the joy of the day. We need more of that joy back.

Dashing04 Posted 2010-11-24 4:13 PM I am thankful for the advances..but I am still old school to some point. I like to keep things simple and have a good foundation for whatever it is. I miss the joy of getting a ribbon in buckaroos. A check is very nice at these D shows, but I remember how much collecting those ribbons meant to me. I never did get to rodeo, so I don’t remember that... I remember a couple of years hauling our butts off with my stepmom to chase association points and still be one or two out. And I think of now where I’m on the fence about injections for Maverick, and trying not to run Sawyer too soon too fast so as to mess his legs up. And I think of how I just would get Mysty out and go do whatever the heck I wanted to do. Jumping 3 foot deep and 3 foot wide ditches, jumping logs, running barrels and poles... Now we weren’t the fastest things on 4 hooves, but I had fun doing it. Would I go back to the old days? Parts of it... Yes parts of it I would. But the majority of it? Heck no... Veedersburg - Chickens, Chili & Champions guaranteed to go home with a smile as she won all four of the events that she entered that day. Anna Deitrich’s first place catch in the Break-away Roping, as well as placing in the Barrel Racing, Pole Bending and Goat Tying quickly added up the points needed for the AllAround title.

W

hat a great turn out for the second rodeo of the new IJRA season! A big THANK YOU! to the Banta and Hunter families for putting on such a successful rodeo. And what would any rodeo be without tradition? Once again, the rodeo grounds were brought to life as the sun began to rise and the roosters began to crow! Jeff Banta brought back the ever popular chicken scramble and really out did himself when he found rooster trophies to top off the already popular cash prize! The Cinch Division chili dinner fundraiser was a big hit. Not only did that warm chili (and peanut butter sandwiches) hit the spot on Saturday night, but the Cinch Junior High Division kids were able to add a little more money to their travel fund for their trip to Gallup, NM. IJRA would like to congratulate the 2010-2011 Indiana Cinch Rodeo Team. These members will all receive one shirt and one pair of jeans. Congratulations to our All-Around winners for the Veedersburg rodeo! The Saturday All-Around winners had their game faces on and came to compete. Clayton Whitten won 1st in Goat Tying and Chute Dogging. Dalton Hartle used his 4.341 Breakaway run, as well as his win in the Step Down Calf Roping, to seal the deal for his All-Around medallion. Maci Zimmerman had a great day as she won the Goat Tying and then she and Bunny smoked the Pole Bending pattern to leave them all standing in a 23.579. On Sunday, the All-Around winners continued to show what the IJRA kids are made of. Kolton Hartle had a great day, winning 1st in Calf Riding, Chute Dogging and Steer Daubing and finishing that up with a 2nd place finish in Goat Tying. Kolt Keller didn’t even give the fans time to blink before he completed his 1.971 Chute Dogging run. He also finished first in the Step Down Calf Roping and 2nd in the Goat Tying, making his mama proud! (Charity, we think it’s time you pay up in the cart wheel department.) Member Spotlight IJRA would like to congratulate our 2009-2010 Boys All-Around Champions! Enjoy your moment in the Spotlight! You have earned it!

What did winning the IJRA All-Around mean to you? BT: It really meant a lot because I did what I set out to do. Oh, and I really wanted that saddle! TW: Winning the All-Around meant that at the end of the year, all my hard work had paid off. SB: It meant that I worked hard for the entire year and achieved my goal. What are your goals for the future - this next year and how ever far you would like to take it. It can be rodeo or life related or both. BT: I always want to win. I want to set my goal to win the all around every year. I also want to rodeo at every level till I’m a pro. TW: In my new age group this year, i would like to try for Rookie of the Year & Reserve All-Around. And, my goals for the future are to rodeo in the PRCA and make it to the NFR. SB: I would like to win all around again and be in the top ten at the Cinch Jr high finals. If someone wanted to win the All-Around, what advice would you give them? BT: My advice would be to work hard, never give up and ALWAYS try your hardest. TW: Work hard, ride your horse, and don’t give up. SB: Work hard and stay focused Do you have or do anything that brings you luck? BT: I have a lucky God bless America bracelet on the shoulder strap of my bullriding vest that I took off my dads vest from when he still rode bulls and broncs. TW: (he laughed and smiled) No. SB: Practicing hard What is the best advice you have ever gotten? BT: Best advice came from my dad about riding roughstock: bow your chest, keep your chin down, and don’t let go till your head hits the dirt. TW: The best advice I’ve ever gotten is to be “smooth” to be fast. (talking about calf roping and tying-Ronnie Hyde) SB: Take advise from everyone that tries helping me. Who are your role models or heroes? BT: My Great- Grandpa Dave, and my dad. TW: Does it have to be just one? because I have a lot! I have watched Strand and Cord Barricklow over the last 2 years. Also, I have learned some things watching TyDaniel Haller, Shawn Coleman, Ronnie Hyde and Trevor Brazille. SB: Stran Smith What was the hardest or least favorite moment and how did you deal with it? BT: The hardest moment was at Edinburg at the last fall rodeo when my pony broke a bone in her leg and we had to put her down on

www.ijra.org Thanksgiving day. I hated it but I had to get with a new horse before the spring rodeo and just do the best I could. Luckily I had a good one (Reo) loaned to me and we’ve got along great! TW: My hardest moment was at finals when I didn’t pull my slack in the step-down roping and the calf ran through my loop after i had dismounted. I had to get back on my horse and rope it again and get down again. I was really frustrated but i didn’t give up. SB: Switching team roping partners. I continued to rope and stay hooked. What was your best or most memorable moment this past year on your journey to winning the All-Around? BT: Going the whole season without getting bucked off. TW: My 7 sec. Step -Down roping!! SB: Setting a new personal record 11.1 in the calf roping

There has been one thought on my mind a lot this month....and it has been faith.

this....then everything would be OK....” or “If I could just do this....then everything would be OK.....” or “If this would just happen.....then everything would be OK....” See the pattern? At this point, I am already looking at what I can “see” to solve my problem.

always let us down at one time or another.) And we should set goals pertaining to our careers, schooling and other things that we are passionate about.... But we shouldn’t displace our faith by putting it in our spouse, our family or our jobs.

When we can see things with our earthly eyes, then it doesn’t take much faith at all does it?

If we will only look to our Heavenly Father to take care of our needs and answer our prayers, we will be so surprised at where the answers can come from when we finally are able to see them at their completion.

Don’t Misplace Your Faith......

I was sitting here at my computer trying to figure out why God has had this subject on my heart so strongly. Whatever the reason, I am sure that this message is for me as much as it is for anyone else... The dictionary’s definition of faith: belief in, devotion to, or trust in somebody or something, especially without logical proof (visual proof) In Hebrews 11:1, the Bible has this to say about faith: Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. I encourage you to read Hebrews 11....it will inspire you. All of those mentioned were just regular people like you and me....people who’s faith in God transformed them.... and history. How many times have you misplaced your faith? If I ask myself this question....the answer would be “Too many times to count.” I have been very guilty of misplacing my faith recently.....and God has been faithful to point that out to me..... Now, I don’t think that I have lost my faith. But I have definitely been guilty of misplacing it....or even more accurately - displacing it. (I looked both definitions up and I think displaced is much more accurate.) misplaced means to put something in a wrong place or position displaced means to move something from its usual or correct place Usually when I displace my faith, it is followed by a statement like, “If so and so would just do

When you start using statments like those.... you can be sure you have displaced your faith. In my case I was looking to someone else, myself and even circumstances to make it all OK when the ONLY one I should have be looking to was God. When your faith is in God.....then it is in the correct place. God NEVER CHANGES. There’s a constant there to base your faith upon. There is a cornerstone, a solid rock, that never changes and all we have to do is keep our faith in it’s correct place. People change....we change....circumstances change.....why would anyone logically put their faith anywhere but God? We are weak and whether we want to feel like we have conrol or we want to place blame... it is so easy to take our eyes off of God and his promises and put them on things we can visually see with our earthly eyes. In doing so we not only displace our faith, as the dictionary says, from God to whatever....but we also take away the Bible’s definition of faith......Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things NOT seen.

When your FAITH is back in the right place.... the proof (or substance) of that is that it brings you HOPE!! Not frustration, not anger, not sadness....but HOPE.

What I mean by displacing your faith is this..... putting your faith in someone or something besides God. This is as simple as looking to your spouse to provide a resolution to a problem or expecting everything to be “OK” once that promotion comes along. Now, I don’t mean that we shouldn’t hold our spouses, our family or our friends to certain standards and expectations (although they will

........In God.

Last & most important thought… Salvation is a gift and a choice...... Jesus died on the cross as the final sacrifice. When He was resurrected on the 3rd day, he defeated Satan for us. All we have to do is believe that He beat death and acknowledge it with our words. If we believe that and accept Him as our personal savior…we are promised eternal life with Him in Heaven. You can’t earn your way into Heaven; you have to believe your way there. So many people think they “aren’t good enough” to get to Heaven… But… Salvation is a GIFT from God and you don’t earn a gift. Gifts are something someone gives to you and for the gift to be yours, you have to accept it. All we have to do is accept that wonderful gift. I know I have…won’t you?

Page 42

In my case, once I realized that I was looking to my husband to “fix” things, it was easy to realize that my displaced faith was actually preventing God from putting things in place for my prayers to be answered. Now, mind you, we all know that God can answer my prayers through my husband....or by any way he chooses...but he will only answer it when I finally look to him. When I focus on him and his promises as my evidence (of things not seen.) Once I do that I am quickly given proof (substance.) That proof is suddenly welling up inside of me in the form of HOPE!

I don’t know about you, but I like it when I feel HOPE. Hope is a great thing....not only does it feel good and make me anxious in a good way....but it is biblical proof that I have put my faith right back where it belongs....

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

Until next month.... Happy Trails & God Bless! Christa

But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. Romans 5:15 For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Romans 10: 9-10

Cowpoke Kendra’s

T O H s ’ t a h W in

Western Trends

Kendra will be giving us a heads up on what’s hot in fashion from time to time. This month we’ll let her introduce herself..... Hello, my name is Kendra Gilbreath. I’d like to tell you a little bit about myself. I was raised in a small community just east of Indianapolis and spent a lot of time on the farm and showing cattle and sheep while growing up. I got involved with horses and started running barrels after I got married to my wonderful husband, Steve. Steve and I still live out in the country with our son, Kolton. When I first started competing, I needed some guidance. I found Pam Mack. She was such an inspiration to me. She has been a great mentor and has helped me with all the horses I have owned. I really began to get competitive about my 5th year of running barrels after I bought a mare named Jae Bar “Lacey.” Lacey was such a nice horse, she gave me the confidence I needed to be good. I was so proud of her when I arrived at a rodeos, not only was she pretty, she was tough in the arena. We won quite a bit together until time came to retire her. After retiring Lacey, I began searching for my next horse. As fate would have it, a good friend let me borrow the horse that I would end up buying. My new mare’s name is Classy. She has been a great horse for me to stay competitive on. We’ve had our names called to the pay window many times together....She definitely has filled the shoes that Lacey wore.

Page 51

I have worked in “Western Retail” for most of my adult life and pride myself on keeping up with the fashion trends in the Western World. This is part of my job as Manager and Buyer, but it also gives me a heads up on what’s hot. When you are in the rodeo arena you always want to look your best......especially when you win! I will tell you a little bit a bout what is currently “Hot” in the rodeo arena. You‘ll always want to have a nice pair of boots, jeans and a realy cool shirt. I know that when I get ready to get dressed I put on my Cowgirl Tuff Jeans! I just love the comfort of them and when getting in the saddle they “give a little” (so you dont rip anything out....if you know what I mean.) I always like to have a nice snap shirt with performance sleeves by Wrangler or Cruel Girl. They make the sleeves extra long so you can move easy when riding. I slip on my Ariat Square toe boots. Ariat makes such awesome styles that can fit any cowgirl! Then, of course I put my Elite hat on made by Cowpokes. Of course I cant forget my pride and joy.....Classy! She wears Classic Equine bell boots and splint boots and a great saddle pad made by 5 Star. (The 5 Star saddle pad really contours to her back.) Then, I grab her CC saddle that is a great all around saddle. I try to make her look her best since I try to look my best in the rodeo arena.

Mystery of the Month....

W

ith this picture comes a short story.....

To get this horse to enter the stating gates, the rider would have to get off and let the horse enter the gates and then the jockey would get back on the horse, taking to much time at the starting gates.......... After two races, the Starter at this race track insisted that this horse be schooled on his gating problem....So trainer and jockey went to school this horse one early morning....This horse would stick his head in the gates and then he would flip back out....But if jockey would get off, he would walk in and allow the jockey to remount in the gates....... After this flip, the horse and jockey were not injured....But, this horse still never entered gates with this rider....He went on to win 5 races in a row.....Who is the horse? Where is this track? Who was the Jockey? And in what Year? Correctly identify our mystery to win your choice of a one year subscription to The Horse Resource, a “Horsey Hat” or a “Horsey-T.”

We Have 1

2

Winners!

W have a winner! Actually we have two winners! Our October mystery went unsolved until our first winner, Karen Lancaster of Sheridan, Indiana texted in the correct information! Karen chose a free subscription for her prize. October’s Mystery included a picture from the 1982 Midwest Match race held in Greencastle, Indiana. The girls shown are from Indiana. They are from L to R: Tammy Burden riding Angel of the Morn (“Angel” was a very prominent stallion in Indiana - in competition and through his offspring), Joi Van Volkenburgh riding Baby Lotta Chick and Jamie Chapman (now Jarrell) riding “Tinker.” States from across the Midwest have been sending teams of barrel racers to compete against each other for the title of Match Champion and possession of the Match Race trophy for well over 30 years now. Read about this year’s Match race in this issue.

2

Our Mystery of the Month from November returned us to the racetrack. Warren Gann gave us the most correct information about our photo and wins a “horsey-hat” for his knowledge. The picture was taken at Wabash Valley Downs in August of 1968 after a win by this little gray mare named Berts Eagle 1. Also shown in the picture are from L to R: Ralph Moistner, Otis Pitcock (owner), Paul Tinkle and Buddy Trietsch (jockey.) This mare went on to win the Indiana Quarter Horse Futurity that same year. Her stablemate, Hasty Glory, ran third and Mr Killian Bar was 2nd. If you have a picture of a Cowgirl or Cowboy that you would like to see featured as our Mystery of the Month then send it via email to us at thehorseresource@msn.com or mail it to us at 12601 S. CR 200 W., Muncie, IN 47302. (ALL originals will be returned.)

Keep’em comin’! We are running low again! Thanks to those who have sent in Mystery Photos! Page 53
