Thank you to all who attended the QHRAI 2011 Stallion Service Auction

QHRAI.NET - posters were placed everywhere, reminding everyone about the new WEBSITE design and information

QHRAI likes our members to be happy bidders and provided a lunch buffet to all members attending the Stallion Service Auction!

Above: Attendees at the 2001 QHRAI SSA had a personal preview of the QHRAI Commercials that will be shown at Indiana Downs and Hoosier Park. The commercials are part of QHRAI’s marketing plan to increase attendance at Quarter Horse Races at both tracks. Below: A filled amphitheater with standing room only at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Indianapolis Airport, was the site for the 2011 QHRAI Stallion Service Auction.

QHRAI Member and Horse Rersource Editor/Owner Christa Conway registers for 2011 QHRAI Membership!

Mike Gross and Gary Smith keep busy as the official bid recorders at the SSA.

Greg Bonfer and Ted Begley of Equine Services Unlimited donated their class act auctioneering services to the QHRAI SSA. Greg and Ted have been an integral part of the QHRAI SSA for several years.

Tom Mosley, normally QHRAI Director of Industry Relations, makes the pedigree’s an interesting and most informative part of the Stallion Service Auction.

QHRAI is proud to announce that 58 breedings were sold the day of the auction bringing nearly $60,000 which will be applied toward the Stallion Service Auction Races. The top sellers of the day were PYC Paint Your Wagon, purchased by Keith Bode for $5,300 and One Famous Eagle, purchased by Michael Bruce for $4,500. QHRAI sincerely appreciates the donations of the stallions by so many great farms and the generousity of the breeders who purchased the breedings. The combination of generosity and the forsight of successful breeding programs by both the stallion owners and breeders will truly make a difference in the quality of horses running in Indiana'a Quarter Horse Racing Program. Thank you!! Graphic Design By: Christa Conway @ The Horse Resource Photos by Shelley ©

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

W

hat an exciting January we have had! If you don’t count all of the freezing cold temperatures, the ice filled water buckets and the snow covered roads - it has been great! Our month started with the Annual QHRAI Stallion Service Auction, membership meeting and Awards Banquet held at the Crowne Royal Plaza Hotel in Indianapolis. What an amazing event the QHRAI puts together for it’s members each year....we all had a great time and I even walked out with a few items from the silent auction. (I wonder how many other times people are seen carrying muck buckets and apple pickers out of that hotel?) The next week we were snowed in, so we’ll skip ahead to when we attended the GBRA-I (Girl’s Barrel Racing Association of Indiana) awards banquet in January. The event was held at Primo’s, also in Indianapolis. We had a great time catching up with our barrel racing friends, cheering for those collecting their awards and doing some dancing in our cowboy boots. January is almost over as I write this and I am looking forward to possibly making it to a tack sale this weekend to pick up more things to clutter my tack room, socialize with other “horsey” people and mostly just to get out of the house.

As I share my experiences and thoughts from the past month with you all, I can’t help but think about how great it is to be involved in the horse world. I haven’t got to ride much this winter, but I can still get my “fix” by showing up at one of the many events that are held in my neck of the woods revolving around horses. I can almost guarantee there will be someone there I know, and if there isn’t, then there will be by the time I leave. That’s just how it goes in the horse world. And I’m thankful I’m a part of it. Until next month........get out of the house, pick a “horsey” event to attend and enjoy the horse world...... God Bless and Ride Safe, Christa Conway

Tax changes for racehorse owners through Equine Equity Act As reported through the www.statesman.com website, this bill was signed into law before Christmas by President Obama. The Equine Equity Act would reduce the time an owner would have to hold a racehorse, before they would be eligible for the capital gains tax rate at sale. The bill would also allow all racehorses to be depreciated over three years, some now are depreciated over seven. Check with your tax professional for more details.

News ing that leaves the horse wanting to do what is asked of him. He will do six demonstrations, including colt starting, at Horse Fair. Cameron also will host and emcee the Extreme Cowboy Race, sanctioned by the Extreme Cowboy Association, with riders competing for $2,000 in cash prizes. Membership is not required to compete, and local riders are encouraged to apply. As seen on RFD-TV, contestants will run an obstacle course (pistol/rifle shooting, jumping, double bareback, deadfall, water carry, flames and smoke, log pull, roping, teeter-totter bridge, etc.) and be judged on their approach to, negotiation of and departure from obstacles, being scored separately on time and horsemanship.

“Extreme Cowboy Race” in coliseum

Cameron joined by Wilhelm, Gingerich at Illinois Horse Fair March 4-6

Springfield, IL – Lead clinician Craig Cameron, 2010 Road to the Horse Colt-Starting World Champion, will be joined at Illinois Horse Fair March 4-6 by popular West Coast trainer Charles Wilhelm, “The Behaviorist” Ryan Gingerich, as well as Illinois trainer Tim Boyer and riding clinic hosts Larry Whitesell (gaited horses) and Donna Irvin (barrel racing). Produced by Horsemen’s Council of Illinois (HCI) and sponsored by Purina Mills, Midway Trailer Sales and Illinois Farm Bureau, the all-breed expo annually attracts more than 10,000 horse owners. New at the 2011 Illinois Horse Fair will be the challenging excitement of Craig Cameron’s “Extreme Cowboy Race” Friday and Saturday nights in the state fairgrounds Coliseum. The race is a multifaceted equestrian sport that requires contestants and their horses to demonstrate both speed and horsemanship. Cameron and the other top clinicians and equine educators will join 140 vendors offering all things for the equestrian – from recreational horsemen to professionals. In addition to learning training and riding techniques from experts, Horse Fair gives attendees access to unique HorsesForSale aisles, breed and sport demonstrations, Stallion Row and Parade and the All-Youth Horse Judging Trials. Among unusual new educational opportunities, attendees can learn how to test fecal samples (with a microscope) for parasites, and get tacked up in halter and reins to experience what a “horse” senses when given silent commands by a “trainer.” These programs will be under the guidance of members of the Southern Illinois University’s Equine Science Program. Cameron of Bluff Dale, TX is one of the original clinicians…on the road more than 44 weeks a year covering 80,000 miles demonstrating the style of horsemanship he has perfected in the last 23 years. Called the “public defender of the horse,” he dedicates himself to those who educate their horses by first educating themselves. Craig has created a program that builds confidence and trust between man and horse. Rather than fight the animal, he offers patience and understand-

Page 12

Open to riders age 18 and over (male or female), the entry fee is $150, which includes stall with first bedding and two weekend passes to Horse Fair. Entrants must submit an entry form and a five-minute performance video for Cameron’s evaluation. Up to 25 of his selected entrants will compete in Friday night’s preliminary round with the 10 top riders advancing to Saturday night’s finals over a different course. Entry forms and more information are available at www.HorsemensCouncil.org/HorseFair or by contacting Horse Fair race coordinator Cherry Stout: (217) 620-6142 or stouthorsefarm@yahoo.com. Charles Wilhelm of Castro Valley, CA has been seen on RFD-TV and his weekly program is currently on NAUHS on DishTV. He offers extensive hands-on learning programs for every level of horsemanship at his facility, from novice through trainer and top-level competitor. His focus is on performance training, including Western Pleasure, English Pleasure, and Ranch Versatility — in addition to clinics for horse people of all skill levels as he will demonstrate in six arena sessions at Horse Fair. Wilhelm is known for his skills in communicating and motivating people as well as his natural abilities with the horse. He believes that “It’s Never, Ever the Horse’s Fault” as his training methods reflect. His relaxed, warm and amusing character has made him a great favorite at clinics and expositions. Clinic participants and observers take home practical and solid knowledge and are able to be successful with their own horses – seeing results right away. Ryan Gingerich’s training methods and techniques for “righting wronged horses” cross all disciplines and are used at his National Equine Behavior Center in Troy, MO to rehabilitate every breed of horse. Ryan is currently seen three times a week on RFD-TV. His training program, Connective Horsemanship, is a marriage of science and tradition, which he will share in sessions at Horse Fair. His five elements of Connective Horsemanship offer a simple language for the rider and the horse. These five elements consist of Basic Control, Lightness, Rhythm, Line and Connection. This language, used exclusively by Ryan and his students, requires that the horse need give only one response to one cue. When used correctly, Ryan’s methods lead to a “deletion” of the incorrect behavior, eliminating confusion in the horse and owner, helping both to relax and learn. Tim Boyer helps horses with people problems and people with horse problems. He also starts colts and has been a horse farm manager for 27 years. He was instrumental in the racing careers of two Thoroughbred horses that won $3 million each, Farma Way and Buck’s Boy, who also won the Eclipse Award and the Breeders Cup Turf. Topics for all presenters are listed at www.HorsemensCouncil.org/HorseFair along with details on horses and riders sought for specific sessions and fees for each.

News Larry Whitesell of Baxter, TN, has been a renowned gaited horseman since 1980. He was very successful in the show ring, winning regional, national and grand national championships. In 2002 he was trainer of the year. He has held judge’s cards in several gaited breeds. He believes gaited horses are genetically bred to gait and we shouldn’t need special bits, shoes, etc., to get them to do what their genes tell them. Today, Whitesell travels the U.S. and Canada doing clinics and equine expositions. His goals are to help people understand what makes gaited horses gait so we can spare the horses from some of the training myths attached to the gaited world that are not in the horse’s best interest. By making things better for the horse, the horse will be smoother, safer and more dependable for riders. He will host a riding clinic for all soft-gaited horse breeds on Saturday and Sunday for two hours each day. The clinic is specifically structured for the recreational rider who wants to learn more about the gaits and how to stay in gait. Clinic fee of $200 includes stall with first bedding and two weekend passes to Horse Fair. For information contact clinic coordinator Stacy Bowman: (217) 487-7664 or sbowman@solomoncolors.com. Donna Irvin is a clinician and barrel racing and horsemanship instructor with the Sharon Camarillo Performance Program in the U.S., Canada and Australia. She has proven herself as both a competitor and a teacher: she is a five-time PRCA/WPRA Great Lakes Circuit final qualifier and a professor of equestrian science at Black Hawk College (Kewanee, IL) since 1990, where her Horse Show Team has won regional, zone and national titles in the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association. In 2010, she was elected to the WPRA Board of Directors. Irvin is an AQHA World Show Qualifier and All American Quarter Horse Congress top ten three times. Camarillo credits Irvin’s experience with the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association, the Professional Women’s Barrel Racing Association and the American Quarter Horse Association Professional Horseman Program for making her the Performance Program’s “traveling” professional. She will host a barrel racing clinic on Saturday and Sunday for two hours each day in the Coliseum. Clinic fee of $150 includes stall with first bed-

Page 13

ding and two weekend passes to Horse Fair. For information, contact clinic coordinator Chrissy Dotson: (309) 222-4505 or dotson3cans@comcast.net. Horse Fair opens on Friday with a reduced $5 admission charge. Saturday or Sunday Horse Fair tickets are $12 adult and $6 child/senior; weekend passes are $20 adult and $10 child/senior. General admission tickets for the Extreme Cowboy Race Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. require a separate ticket: $9 adult, $6 child/senior. Advance tickets may be purchased online with a credit card at www.HorsemensCouncil.org/HorseFair or by calling the Council office at (217) 529-6503.

Volunteers are needed for a variety of responsibilities, ranging from manning information booths to hospitality. You can volunteer for a few hours a day or for a whole weekend. To volunteer, contact Cheryl DeMent by email at paintfilly71@yahoo.com. For information on exhibiting contact Joy Meierhans, Horse Fair Manager: (630) 557-2575 or JM@TheMeierhans.com. Illinois Horse Fair is produced by Horsemen’s Council of Illinois, voice of the horse industry in Illinois. It is affiliated with the American Horse Council and is the statewide association of equine organizations and individuals working to provide central leadership and advocacy for Illinois’ horses and horse owners, and its multi-billion-dollar industry.

BFA Board Meeting - Smooth and Decisive submitted by Tamara Reinhardt Barrel Futurities of America Board of Directors convened for their annual meeting January 16 and 17, 2011 at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. President Charles Brock and other members of the Board welcomed new Board members Leslie Willis (Chester, SC) and Louis Fincher (Mosheim, TN). The Board reviewed the BFA rulebook focusing on the major rule violation regarding abuse. Referring to several other associations’ rulebooks and revising the wording to comply with barrel racing, the Board has adopted a ZERO TOLERANCE policy toward animal

Page 15

abuse. Furthermore, the Board strengthened its authority to review and enforce this rule. Finally, the fine scale for minor and major rule violations has been changed: minor rule violation fines will range from $10 to $500, major rule violation fines will range from $500 to $5000 (each incident subject to Board review). The Board is submitting the rules for legal review and will post rule changes on the website and will include the new rules in the revised rulebook. Going Big Time Sale Company (Danny and Darla Ray) received a 3 year extension on the BFA Horse Sale contract. Under the supervision of Going Big Time, the BFA sale has realized a $500,000 increase in gross sales since 2003. The 2010 sale posted record breaking averages for the top 5 and top 10 sellers. Mr. Ray’s enthusiasm for seeking and selling the best barrel racing prospects should guarantee a bigger and better sale for 2011. Prospective consignors need to prepare for a SELECT BFA horse sale meaning paperwork, photos, and horses should be exceptional not just acceptable. Victory Farms/Going Big Time will continue to sponsor the $10,000 4D Open Barrel Race at the BFA World Championships. Changes regarding the management and production of the 2011 BFA World Championships include the following: • *Review and confer with State Fairgrounds to improve the alley set-up. Improved lighting underneath the alleyway balcony would improve visibility and safety of competitors and horses. • *Eliminate admission prices during the week’s competitions. Establish admission prices and procedures for $uper$takes and Finals performances only. (Paying State Fair employees to enforce admission procedures was cost prohibitive compared to the sale of admission buttons) • *Expand advertising opportunities with use of Jumbotron during $uper$takes and Finals performances. Utilize webcast capability to produce a recap/prediction broadcast to attract a larger webcast audience and to enhance sponsors’ benefit package. • Over the last 5 years the BFA has incurred a 30% increase in the facility use fee at the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds. Responding to a BFA member’s suggestion, the BFA will increase the stall fee for 2012 to $120. Part of the proceeds will be used to defer the cost of the facility, and the other part will be used to increase the BFA Futurity year-end bonus program. Currently, the bonus program totals $15,000 and is awarded as follows: Champion-$5000, Reserve Champion-$4000, 3rd-$3000, 4th-$2000, and 5th-$1000. The BFA is committed to honoring, recognizing, and rewarding the year’s best futurity horses. Other plans are being initiated to publicize the BFA’s Champions. The BFA is an Association of competitors, owners, producers, and sponsors. Please contact BFA Board members with questions, concerns, and suggestions. FEBRUARY 2011 The year is off to a busy start. QHRAI just held the highest attended Annual Stallion Service Auction and Banquet on January 8th at the Crowne Plaza Hotel , Indianapolis Airport. The SSA boasts 58 stallions sold bringing nearly $60,000 dollars. Sale toppers were PYC Paint your Wagon, purchased by Keith Bode for $5,300 and One Famous Eagle purchased by Michael Bruce for $4,500. There were approx 150 attendees at the auction, which overfilled the Amphitheater with not any standing room only left, and the count at the banquet was about 285. WOW, we had a great crowd, sold a lot of great breedings, met our new 2011 – 2012 QHRAI President Chris Duke, and saw many awards given to horses, breeders, owners, trainers, and special awards including the 2010 Presidents Award to Tom Mosley and the 2010 QHRAI Hall of Fame Award given to Tom Lewis, and Dick McClain. A huge congratulations to all who have worked so hard to earn their deserved awards. We finished the night out with music by Diana Pelham and her band and some pizza to fill any empty stomachs at midnight. Thank you to all who made this year’s event such a huge success. The race season is right around the corner, and there are (should be) many tired 2 year olds from their new found experiences of rider on back…… How ‘bout it? Indiana is a tough place to get babies going , but we have the most dedicated, creative trainers in the country so our babies can be ready to go at ID’s. Speaking of ID’s, the anticipated opening date for training will be 2nd – 3rd week in March. As usual, the weather conditions will play a big role in the opening day. Please keep posted to QHRAI.NET for the most current information available. The race meet opens on April 18th and goes until July 13th,. Stall apps are available on the Indy Downs Website. We will have an all Quarter Horse Race Day on July 2nd. We are planning to have schooling races again this year at Indiana Downs, so watch the newsletter and QHRAI.NET for details.

ments of a negative Coggin’s test for equine infectious anemia within the last 12 months and proof of equine herpes virus vaccination within the last 6 months.” So, please plan ahead to avoid delays being admitted to Indiana Downs and Hoosier Park. You may have heard some information about the current legislative session and the budget bill as it pertains to horse racing purses. Please be assured that QHRAI is keeping up to date on events happening at the Statehouse and will continue doing everything possible to keep our purse levels intact. The budget is a huge bill and many things are addressed in it. It will be tweaked and revised many times before the end of the session in April. We will be keeping you posted of current issues and initiatives that we may even ask you to help with. We are lucky to be involved in an industry that actually generates revenue for the state as we all invest regularly in hay, feed, trucks, trailers, training, barns, tack, gasoline, etc. We have a lot to be proud of and to boast to our state legislators. The QHRAI Board of Directors Meeting is the first Tuesday of each month. This is an open meeting and anyone is welcome to attend. The location will be announced on QHRAI.NET prior to each meeting. If you have any questions about anything, you can contact any member of the board, or Michelle Collins, Executive Director at 317-509-6372. Trainers, it’s very important to note that the Piroplasmosis test is going to be required in 2011 in addition to the current requirements. According to Dr. Angela Demaree, IHRC Veterninarian “Each equine entering association grounds during the Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse race meets must be accompanied by an official copy of the laboratory test result to include the animal’s identification (tattoo), the date the sample was drawn, and the test result. grossing sale in the 33 year history of Heritage Place, the 2011 Winter Mixed Sale closed it’s three-day session Saturday evening, January 15, in Oklahoma City.

Lazy E Ranch, LLC, Agent for Spear Cross Ranch-Henry Brown was the leading consignor with 69 head totaling $1,623,600. Lazy E Ranch, LLC, Agent sold another 64 head for $640,900. Bobby D. Cox had 38 head bring $287,100.

“The results speak for themselves,” Heritage Place General Manager Jeff Tebow said Saturday night. “After a quick review we believe this is the highest grossing sale in the 33 year history of Heritage Place.”

Corona Cartel was the leading sire of short-yearlings with five head averaging $49,200, while first crop sire Swingin Jess had two head average $40,000. Leading Sire of 2010 Money Earners, Mr Jess Perry had two head average $30,000.

Total volume for all sessions was $10,931,400. There were 1065 horses that passed thru the sale ring for an average of $10,264. “The International demand for the Racing American Quarter Horse is unbelievable and the domestic buyers were equally impressive,” Tebow said. “We realize that none of this could have been possible without the support and commitment of our consignors. They consigned a great group of horses and were reward with recorded prices,” he added.

Valiant Hero, a grade 1 winner who’s first crops will race this year, led the covering sires with four in-foal mares averaging $34,375. Walk Thru Fire had two in-foal mares average $26,250 and champion Jess Louisiana Blue had two in-foal mare average $22,733.

Blues Ferrari, a 3-year-old full brother to World Champion Blues Girl Too, topped the sale late Saturday when Alfonso Del Rayo gave the final bid of $310,000. The 2010 Golden State Million Futurity(G1) finalist sired by Corona Cartel was consigned by Tyler Graham – Southwest Stallion Station, Agent.

For results go to www.heritageplace.com or watch for results in an upcoming issue. “On behalf of Heritage Place I want to thank the industry for the success we achieved during this sale. It appears that the 2011 breeding season that is about to begin is sure to be a good one if the results of the 2011 Winter Mixed Sale are any indication,” Tebow concluded.

Champion Corona Cash, a 16-year-old daughter of First Down Dash, was the high selling broodmare at $230,000. Elim Quarter Horses was

QHRAI News Indiana to Require Piroplasmosis Testing for Racehorses From the State of Indiana, Indiana Horse Racing Commission Mitchell E. Daniels, Governor www.in.gov/hrc For Immediate Release - January 21, 2011 - The Indiana State Board of Animal Health (BOAH) voted at their January meeting to approve an emergency rule requiring all equines entering Indiana Downs and Hoosier Park during the Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse race meets to first test negative for equine piroplasmosis. The emergency rule is effective March 1, 2011.

“It is important for trainers and veterinarians to note that every equine entering association grounds during the Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse race meets will need to have a negative equine piroplasmosis test result dated within the last 12 months,” stated Dr. Angela Demaree, Equine Medical Director for the Indiana Horse Racing Commission. “A horse will be required to leave association grounds, and therefore be unable to race, if the negative test result expires before another negative test result is obtained.” The blood sample must be drawn by a licensed and federally accredited veterinarian.

A C-ELISA test must be performed for both Theileria equi and Babesia caballi strains of piroplasmosis and the sample must test negative for both strains by a laboratory certified and approved by the United States Department of Agriculture to conduct such testing. Each equine entering association grounds during the Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse race meets must be accompanied by an official copy of the laboratory test result to include the animal’s identification (tattoo), the date the sample was drawn, and the test result. This is in addition to the current requirements of a negative Coggin’s test for equine infectious anemia within the last 12 months and proof of equine herpes virus vaccination within the last 6 months. The BOAH concurrently issued a veterinary advisory for veterinarians treating horses intending to be stabled on association grounds or race at the Indiana Downs Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse race meet opening on April 18, 2011. The advisory and additional information can be found on the BOAH website, www.boah.in.gov. Veterinarians with questions can contact Dr. Angela Demaree, Equine Medical Director, at ademaree@hrc.in.gov or Dr. Tim Bartlett, Director of Equine Programs for the BOAH at tbartlett@boah.in.gov. On the Trail

By Brother Brad Curtis of Mountain Top Cowboy Church

THE TRIPLE TREE Steve was ridin for Red Legs When he heard about the Triple Tree Thought I’m tired of rustlin` cows The Triple Tree is the brand for me

Steve rode out Headed for the Triple Tree When he rode onto the spread At last he was set free

But Steve spoke up Said yep I ride for the Triple Tree I was met there by Luv and Grace And follow Mr. Mercy

As he saddled up Lou said pard no need to go There’s plenty trouble to get into We have wild oats to sow

Mr. Luv met him at the gate Along with Grace They said welcome my friend Here on Mr. Mercy’s place

Red Legs was in a rage As he picked up a stone They drug Steve off his pony A fine lookin` blue roan

Steve pushed back his hat Then climbed up on his ol` stick Said Lou I’m tired of this place Yep it makes me down right sick

As time went by Steve became a top buckaroo When it came time to nurse cows He always knew what to do

Everyone joined in As the rocks did fly Steve dropped to his knees Lookin` to the sky

I’m headed to the Triple Tree Man have you seen that place Green pastures, water year round And its run by someone named Grace

One day while in town There for supplies He heard a terrible ruckus Hatred filled the skies

Said Mr. Mercy forgive them They know not what they do If there is some way Help me tell them about you

Lou’s eyes turned to fire Said some day you’ll pay Me and Captain Red Legs Will see to it one fine day

Lou and Red Legs where busy Stirrin` up trouble One of the store keepers shouted Steve cut out on the double

It was then Mr. Mercy showed up Said Steve come home to the spread You’ll ride with me forever And never be hurt by Lou or Red

As he picked Steve up With nailed scared hands for all to see Everyone knew it was Mr. Mercy The owner of the Triple Tree Act 7:59-60 And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep.

decided this month to write on Therapy for horses. There is a lot of horses that are injured, have arthritis or out of condition. There is a therapy that has been proven to work! It is called Equivibe. It consists of a moving/vibrating plate that the horses stand on during treatment.

there, and you know what? When I picked her up she walked so much better and I could see a huge difference in her and she seemed happier.

The use of vibration is an effective form of equine therapy. It has been used on some of the most recently successful Thoroughbred race horses, including Super Saver, winner of the 136th Kentucky Derby. Barrel racing and racehorses normally experience significant physical wear and tear due to their training and competitions. It is a beneficial way for them to receive muscle vibration and stimulation in a way alternate to exercise. Equivibe uses involuntary muscle contractions, which will improve blood and lymph circulation. It increases blood flow and improves oxygen of the tissues. It removes toxins and metabolic waste. Plus, it enhances the body’s ability to heal itself.

A lot of horses like mine are not able to exercise daily because of an injury, this can cause a decrease in bone density. Horses experience a loss of minerals from their bones because they are lacking stimulation to the bones that is a signal to retain these minerals. This rehabilitation for horses is really even good for the horses that are out performing. It helps them relax, build muscle, and increases energy. It will reduce pain, improve flexibility, and increases range of motion, circulation, muscle coordination, balance and stability. This can all be done through vibration therapy for your horse.

I personally got to experience this with my retired barrel horse, Lacey. If anyone knows Lacey, they know that she has arthritis really bad in one of her ankles. I have had her injected to keep her from hurting and make her retired life happy. I have always taken good care of her, so I decided that I would send her to rehab and try the Equivibe. She was there for 5 days and she was on the Equvibe 8 times while she was

Equivibe is available at 2High Dollar Ranch located in Greenfield, IN. 2High Dollar Ranch is a rehabilitation and conditioning therapy center owned and oprated by Sherry Sunden. Sherry also offers services such as Thermotex infrared-heat and infrared light, Chiropractic-adjustments to skeletally balance a horse, Hydrohorse-hydrotherapy with the underwater treadmill system and rehabilitating or conditioning services. The facility has 12x12 stalls, turn-outs, grass pastures, 150x230 outdoor arena. Located 5 minutes northeast of interstate 70, it is easily accessible from Hoosier Horse Park or Indiana Downs. For more information contact Sherry Sunden at 317/363-9416 or check out 2High Dollar Ranch on Facebook.

Neighbors...... and Being Neighborly

Since last month’s freeze out and the New Year’s involuntary diet resolution (I still protest), things have gotten very busy around here at the ranch. There has been a lot of activity going on at the barn - most of it revolving around the two new stallions that have taken up residence here with us. I am not quite sure what all the fuss is about, they eat and require a wheel-barrow to clean up after them....just like the rest of the horses in the barn. (I’m sure the people around here wouldn’t like it if it required a wheel barrow to clean up after me.) I suppose if I were a female horse I might be a little more excited about these “studs”....but I’m glad I’m not a female horse. I get to sleep in the house in my own bed and they don’t.

my comfy new napping place. Thank God, one of my people seen her attempt at sabotage in process and moved my new bed to a safer location. We’ll see how long it takes her to find it and try again. I do have to admit that the little black bark box -slash- “brat”wurst has not been as much of a nuisance lately because she doesn’t move around a lot when it is cold. On the other hand, I have a new thorn in my side. The neighbor dog. He is a yellow lab and he is HUGE. He lumbers down here to visit every time someone heads to the barn. It has gotten so bad that the people even try to sneak out quietly without him hearing them. Too funny! When the people start banging around on the buckets full of ice....here comes ‘Ole Duke. He pushes his way in when the people start passing out the pats and praises and there’s not much left for the rest of us, especially the short ones like me! He probably doesn’t mean anything by it, but he is just sooo big, no one else stands a chance. He even does this thing where he “smiles” (I’ve dubbed him “Smilin’ Duke”) at the people and then they actually feel bad for the big lug and let him hang around. I’m just glad they don’t feed him. There there would be NO food for any of us....forget the diet, it would be considered fasting. I ran across some Duke droppings the other day. I expect the people will be building him a stall soon if the wheel barrow size “you know what” is a sign of stall status. I’m thinking that I am going to have to take control and join up forces with Princess Annabelle and the outside dogs to take back what is rightfully ours.

Speaking of beds, I mentioned last month that I got a new bed for Christmas....well, it should be no surprise to learn that my prediction came true......Princess Annabelle has already taken a stab at destroying

Cowboy Mounted Shooting

Raw Horsepower - Hard Ridin’ - Straight Shootin’ 1st Ohio Cowboy Mounted Shooters Starting the New Year off with a BANG! 1st Ohio Cowboys & Cowgirls have been busy planning activities for 2011! Actually, points for this new 2011season started October 24th, 2010, the day after the CMSA World finals in Amarillo, Texas. Our 1st Ohio club has some exciting events scheduled starting with a one day shoot on March 5th at an indoor arena in Ross, Ohio. On March 19th, a “Ride Smart” clinic with multi-winning champion Rock Clark is on the list. This Tennessee Cowboy is among the top ranked shooters in CMSA, his list of Championship titles includes wins from 2002 to the present. Course management is one of Rock’s many strengths and part of his clinic is geared toward shaving time to make your run more efficient. Pre registration is a must, slots are limited so if your interested get your payment in ASAP. Blazing Hoofbeats, an open three stage match will follow the clinic, starting at 2:00 PM. We also have shoots lined up on April 2nd- Blazing Saddles, and the 30th- Blazing Bullets, both indoors in Ross, Ohio. Memorial Day weekend we head outside to the Gymkhana Arena in Miamitown, Ohio for Meetin’ at the Little Miami on Saturday and shooting The Cowboy Way on Sunday. Our schedule also includes shoots in June at Miamitown, July at Crossroads Arena in Cloverdale, Indiana, and back to Miamitown in September and October. Our “Tuff Enough to Go Pink” Charity Shoot on October 8th, is really something to see...a sea of pink that is, cowboys & cowgirls along with ponies and dogs all dressed in pink! More details later on this shoot, please note pink is not required, however if your thinking of “pinking-up”, better start working on your outfit! Did you know that Cowboy Mounted Shooting competitions are open to all breeds of horses and mules, registered and unregistered. Also, there is no limit on the number of horses that a competitor uses for a match, therefor a competitor may change horses for each stage. For a match to qualify for CMSA World Points, events hosted on Saturday or Sunday usually consist of 4 stages (courses to be run) and a minimum of 10 competitors. Events hosted Monday - Friday may consist of 3 stages. These events may be single point matches or double points. CMSA State Championships are triple points and the Regional Championships are quadruple points. CMSA members accumulate points to qualify to participate at the World finals plus the year end High Points State and Regional Cowboy and Cowgirl Champions receive special awards from the National Association. 2010 Clinic at Henry County Saddle Club This month I’d like to give you an update on the club and some of the things we have going on this year.

wanting more information on the clinic can contact me by e-mail or phone number listed below.

We already have several activities planned with more to come. We’ll have a CMSA booth set up at the “Tack-N- Swap” Sale on March 26th at the Henry County Saddle Club Grounds in New Castle, IN. From there we head to the Hoosier Horse Fair, April 1, 2, and 3, along with The Indiana Mounted Regulators to put on one of the best shooting demos you’ll ever see. We’ll be giving five demo’s at the Horse Fair throughout the weekend and something new on the agenda will be two lectures on “Introducing You and Your Horse to Cowboy Mounted Shooting”, presented by Terry Martin and Bryan McDonald.

Well that takes us through April and we’ll update you on upcoming shoot dates and other activities in later issues.

The following weekend, April 9th, The Indiana Rough Riders will be hosting a clinic at the Henry County Saddle Club Grounds. This clinic will be geared toward introducing new shooters and new shooting horses to the sport of Cowboy Mounted Shooting. Participants will be coached on gun safety for Cowboy Mounted Shooting, get a chance to see and handle the different types and styles of guns we use, have a chance to introduce your horse to gun fire and hopefully shoot a couple of stages off your own horse by the end of the day. We always have a great turn out and a lot of fun and there’s no charge for just watching or listening if you want to come out and see what it’s all about. Anyone

(.....my Christmas present to them)

Madison and Sassi Jae My girls are opposites like two sides of a coin Friends to the end, but fierce competitors when showin Madison long Legs like an albatross She moves with equal grace Sassi Jae would be the opposite Compact, strong and in your face

Sassi Jae and I waited and waited for our turn at Cushing She paced and kicked the ground and just thought time was wasting

When it comes to horses, they never share Each girl has her own special style of animal that never compare

We brushed and tacked her mare Flitter On Fire I said Sassi remember, it’s a huge arena, chase her all the way to the wire

Madison says “ give me the free, the fast, take my breath away Sassi Jae says “ give me a rope, some spurs and I ‘ll show em the way

She only nodded her head as she screwed down her hat And the 12 year old dropped the hammer like A. Rod with a bat

My pride as a coach I could never reveal Walking Madison to the alley asking her to breathe and remember her feel

With the greatest run of her career, even after 400 No other horse and rider could even come near.

She gathered Famous Ed took a breath then stuck to our deal I cheered, I coached and screamed throughout When they crossed the timer she was my world champion without a doubt. Page 36

Shelbi Singletary

Hi!

Hope everyone is keeping warm. I had a great Christmas and Happy New Year. We brought the New Year in right, in Florida. Went to Florida the day after Christmas and stayed until January 2. I am now thinking to myself, “Why did I want to do my senior year in public school?” Don’t get me wrong I like school and I love my senior year, but going to the barn and riding in this cold just isn’t the same as walking out the door in Florida and having a t-shirt on and riding.

CLINT

Clint is a 17 year old junior he is enrolled in Abeka Academy homeschool. His parents are Terrie VanVolkenburgh and respectively Joe Trentman. He has grown up in the horse world, both parents have rode almost all their life...Clint's grandfather as some of you may remember was the late Terry VanVolkenburgh, who would run up and down the fences when his daughters would run barrels. Clint began barrel racing at the age of 4 with a pony, then went on to particpate in Jr. Rodeo and his favorite event was the sheep riding, had to believe he is now a barrel racer. He has won the Ohio Youth NBHA and Indiana Youth and Open NBHA , he has also won the congress youth barrel four times, and was runner up in the Congress Sweepstakes, placed at Josey Jr. world numerous times, and won the NBHA Youth World 1d in 2006. He loves to barrel race and is now trying his hand at the futurities. In Clint's spare time he mows grass for a part time job and is also very active in his church where he and his cousins are bible school helpers. Clint also volunteers one day a week at a school in Cincinatti where he spends time tutoring other kids in reading.

Subject: Mare with a painful heat cycle/ spaying VetsGotMyMoney Posted 2011-01-21 4:13 PM Veteran Posts: 188 Location: AL I got a mare last summer that has a pretty bad heat cycle. She acts very painful every time she comes into heat. If she is in her stall she will lay/rub on the walls and doors so bad that you can see the barn bowing out from the outside or she breaks the door. If she is out side she will do it on the barn wall, round pen panels, etc. She is mean toward other horses in the pasture, but when you ride her she is a nervous train wreck. She also kicks in the stall, trailer, riding her, out in the pasture...She’ll kick anything. She has been doing this for as long as I know and it is always worse when she is in heat. I have tried herbs and they had no effect on her. I got the vet to ultrasound her and one of her ovaries appeared enlarged. We put her on regumate and she has been doing a lot better. She doesn’t try to rub her sides off and her nervousness is a little less. Took her off because I ran out and she has became destructive again. I have also had a chiropractor look at her and had some acupuncture done as well. Before I put her back on regumate I wanted to see if anyone here had had any experience with mares that have extremely painful heat cycles. I want to take her to a repro specialist and get their opinion as well. I am to the point that I know something is wrong with her to be causing all this pain. If she isn’t breeding sound (which would be a shame because she is beautiful and has an outstanding pedigree!) and I have to keep her on regumate for the rest of her life, I might consider spaying her. So, my other question is: has anyone had a mare spayed?? rodeoveteran Posted 2011-01-21 4:59 PM I Don’t Brag Posts: 2970 I ended up spaying my good mare 16 years ago, because of painful heat cycles. The first time it happened, I had only had her a few months and she kicked continually in the trailer, where before, she hauled like a champ. She also did not want to stop after a run (actually couldn’t sit down to stop). She rubbed like you are talking about, almost looked colicky.

Page 45

Took her to the vet the first time and he palped her, telling me her one ovary was the size of a grapefruit! He put some implants in her chest and sent me home, problem solved......NOT! Spent a whole summer with trips to many different vets and two different vet colleges fighting this issue. Finally decided to have her spayed. Despite her grit, talent and excellent breeding, it was the best thing I could have done for her. She has taken care of me for many years and won quite a bit of $$. But warning if you think it will change marish behavior, it probably won’t, but it will eliminate the pain she is experiencing. Am now fighting this same issue with a second mare. But I gave a lot of money for her, and she is a hot bloodline, lots of talent (when I can actually run her), big and eye catching, so I have put it off. Part of me wishes that I had done it 5 years ago, then I might actually find out what her potential is. I have run the gamut of chiropracting, herbs, Regumate, hormone shots, marbles, etc., and on these two mares, nothing really helps. VetsGotMyMoney Posted 2011-01-22 10:16 AM Veteran Posts: 188 That is the problem I am having. She is very well bred (her sire is a champion race horse, she is a gd of Mr. Eye Opener and Six Fortunes and, her dam has a 105 SI). And she is a beautiful mare (I have had several people offer to buy her just based on looks). The only thing is she is a solid Appaloosa, so IF she was ever bred it would have to be to a characteristic App. But, that is helping me lean towards spaying her. I don’t mind if she still acts marish, I just don’t want her hurting as bad as she is. Any more input? Anybody? fifteenflat Posted 2011-01-22 11:18 AM Quack Quack Woodle Woodle Posts: 6066 Location: Texas I have one that had trouble with this and her ovaries stayed sore all the time. She would flinch and duck when you brushed her back. The chiro told me to put her on lysine and mare magic and she is doing SO much better. SaraJean Posted 2011-01-22 11:27 AM Northern Chocolate Queen Posts: 11243 Location: ND I spayed one 7 yrs ago, was the best

thing I ever did for that mare. I would certainly do it again if it was for the benefit of the horse by allowing them to be comfortable without constant medication & they can go on with their careers. sugargal Posted 2011-01-22 11:49 AM Member Posts: 40 Location: where the snow flies I had a mare with painful ovaries/ heat cycles. She would even act like it bothered her to urinate. She was a squealing, dirty, mare! Best thing I ever did was put her on Mare Moods from Silver Lining and leave her on it. I didn’t see results in 7-10 days, but kept feeding it and it did wonders. I think I also ran a bag of Kidney through her...but now just use Mare Moods. I definitely notice if I run out and think.... man I guess I have to keep her on it! paints4me Posted 2011-01-22 1:40 PM The Painted Power Slapper Posts: 11972 Location: Praying that the Lord keeps my babies safe Did any of you try breeding you mare SaraJean Posted 2011-01-22 1:50 PM Northern Chocolate Queen Posts: 11243 Nope I didn’t, did not feal that that particular mare was breeding quality. VetsGotMyMoney Posted 2011-01-22 4:02 PM Veteran Posts: 188 I have tried different herbs with this mare and they don’t work. I don’t know if I want to breed her, I am in school and don’t need a baby right now. Plus, since there is something wrong to be causing these problems she may not be breeding sound. Tilt The Kilt Posted 2011-01-22 4:11 PM Ima Chick Posts: 17833 Location: Ni Modo She’s likely making huge follicles, and that’s what’s causing the pain. I had a mare doing the same, took me 3 years to figure it out. I consulted with numerous vets and all wanted to do exploratory surgery - finally one said try Regumate first and voila, 30 days on it and she never had any problems for the remainder of the course of it. That vet gave me a study done and

bottom line is most grow out of the pain. Only 10% of mares have as much pain as yours and mine. My vet suggested I wait and see if the Regumate resolved it, and thankfully in one season it did. The same resolution happens often when the mare is bred - though generally my choice is a bottle of Regumate to another horse on the planet. Re: spaying, I have another vet who has a family ranch in WY. She spays most of her mares and much prefers using them to geldings. VetsGotMyMoney Posted 2011-01-22 4:25 PM Veteran Posts: 188 When you say one season exactly how long was that? I put this mare on regumate in October (I think) and tried taking her off this past week. She was HORRIBLE! when she came off it, i.e. tearing down the barn rubbing on it. I am guessing she is one that would cycle all year round. betsykuschel Posted 2011-01-22 4:55 PM Extreme Veteran Posts: 326 Location: Sebeka, MN Mare moods from silver Lining Herbs. Tilt The Kilt Posted 2011-01-22 5:04 PM Ima Chick Posts: 17833 Mine only needed one bottle. The vet said that was best case scenario but not to count on it. The one bottle lasted me 3.5 months, we waited for her next cycle the following season and she was A-OK. She told me it might take a longer treatment, but thank goodness she leveled out - IMO that study was pretty clear, vastly all in the study were fine on their own by 4 & 5 (age). Mine was just coming 5 and spent her 4 yr. old season on Regumate. All worked out for me with both those factors. I’d not waste your money on herbs. Some people are dealing with a simple moody mare, others are dealing with monster follicles which hurt. rodeoveteran Posted 2011-01-22 8:12 PM I Don’t Brag Posts: 2970 Up here (the cold, frozen North) IF Regumate helps, we mostly only have to keep them on it from about April to September and then let them go dormant for the winter. For some mares, all the herbs and even Regumate won’t help. Believe you me

BARREL TALK I have tried everything seperately and together, including breeding (couldn’t get her settled). In my experience they don’t START getting bad until about age 5, and the 2 I have did NOT grow out of it. And just to be clear, we are talking, real debilitating pain here, not just moody mares. I am going into year 6 with the mare I have now and only been able to run her one summer out of the 5 in the past due to her female issues. I suggest trying whatever looks like it may work and then consider spaying. I just wished I hadn’t wasted the past 4 years on this mare and just spayed her, but like I said, she was a lot of $$ and has the looks, breeding, talent and bloodlines to breed, so have been reluctant to do so. MTCanchaser Posted 2011-01-22 8:24 PM Location: In my own little world!! There are any number of different tests that can be done to check for diffent cancerous tissues that could be causing pain in the forms of tumors or cysts. If there is a problem with only one ovary, you could have her only half spayed. Then you could rule out all problems with that ovary and would still have a breedable mare. ETA: My good mare had one ovary removed in 2009, best money I ever spent on her!!! VetsGotMyMoney Posted 2011-01-22 8:59 PM Veteran Posts: 188 If I get the “bad” ovary taken out I am going to have both taken at the same time. She is a noncharacteristic Appaloosa, so her foals have to come from a characteristic App to be registered. That makes breeding her very limiting. Herbs don’t work on this mare! Sorry, I just keep seeing the herb thing come up. Regumate is the only thing that has helped her. She is still a mean mare on regumate, but she doesn’t come into heat so she isn’t in pain. I am not looking to solve her behavior issues, I just want her to be happy and healthy and able to run. I am in the south and she was cycling year round, so she would have to be on regumate year round. Also she is going to be 7 years old this year. So, I don’t think she is going to grow out of it. When you had your mare spayed were there any complications and how long was recovery? MTCanchaser Posted 2011-01-22 9:19 PM Location: In my own little world!! Then I would go ahead and not have a

continued...... second thought about getting the mare spayed if breeding isnt a major issue for you. I had my mare partially spayed the end of May and ran on the fourth of July!! We did a laproscopic surgery done on her, no complications. Here is a link to an article that came out in Western Horseman, about the surgery on my mare. http://www.onlinedigitalpubs.com/ display_article.php?id=528419

Subject: What to feed a horse...... fourh mom Posted 2011-01-20 6:27 PM Expert Posts: 3236 Location: MIssissippi ...who has choked. Or I guess I should say -- immediately following a choke episode. My older gelding choked last night pretty badly - was clogged from one end of his esophagus to the other. Vet said to let him spend the night (she left here at 1:30am) w/nothing to eat and then give him some soaked slurry-like food the next day. Only problem is, he still seems to be not eating that well. He will cough and act like even the slurry food is “unhappy” for him. I have alflafa pellets, beet pulp, whole oats, and rice bran here at the house and I had soaked some pellets until they were the consistency of soup and then added some of the rice bran. That seemed to be bothering him though. I watered it down even more and put it in a big tub that he had to basically lick to get anything... and that still seemed to bother him. I asked the vet about milk replacer and she thougth it might tear his stomach up. ?? In previous episodes I’ve always went back to hay the next day, but he was pretty bad, and he’s not drinking any water. He is getting very mad at me for not bringing him something he can EAT. BigSkyDream Posted 2011-01-20 6:52 PM Member Posts: 115 Location: TN I have a horse that choked badly a few times. Tried all the tricks, then finally settled with soaking pelleted feed for her. If the horse was tubed to unclog them, he might have gotten pneumonia (sp?). That might be why he’s not feeling so well. Mine got that bad the first time, and had to be given antibiotics for a while. I then gave her some probiotics to replace the good bacteria in her gut. fourh mom Posted 2011-01-20 6:56 PM Expert Posts: 3236 He seems to be feeling well enough - he ‘s just MAD that he can’t eat like he normally does. And the soaked pelleted alfalfa does seem to be bothering him. I have been making it into a slurry... but just then I gave him some that was more of a wet paste consistency and he ate it much better. He is on antibiotics, a throat soother pill, and banamine. fourh mom Posted 2011-01-20 7:19 PM Expert Posts: 3236 Well, every other time I’ve had a horse to choke they went back on hay the next day -- so -- I gave him some of the soaked feed that was paste consistency, and some hay. I’ve checked on him twice and he seems very happy. No slobber coming out of his mouth, and no snot in his nose. I’ll keep a check but I think this will work for him. T

he Indiana Junior Rodeo Association held their 2009-2010 Awards Banquet on December 4, 2010 in Lebanon, IN. Members, family and friends gathered to celebrate a successful season and officially crown 2009-2010 champions. Congratulations to all of our event and All-Around winners this year. Each and every IJRA member should be proud of their season and all they learned and accomplished this year. IJRA has a great group of kids and families and that’s what makes this association so successful. We are all looking forward to what 2011 brings!

Just a reminder that Sponsorship money is due at the April rodeo in Edinburgh. Don’t forget that there is a Sponsorship packet that can help you when approaching sponsors. The money we are able to bring in through sponsorships provides year end awards for the IJRA members. If each member could ask the companies and businesses that they support to support IJRA, the association will be able to continue handing out great awards like we did at this year’s banquet.

It’s time to start thinking about getting horses legged back up and the rodeo skills polished. Before you know it, the hair will be filling our brushes and the air announcing that Spring is here! Our next rodeo is April 16th and 17th in Edinburgh, IN. This rodeo will be a joint rodeo with the Indiana High School Rodeo Association which means double the fun! Watch the website for more information. ijra.org

Forgive........

The definitions of forgive: 1. transitive and intransitive verb stop being angry about something: to stop being angry about or resenting somebody or somebody’s behavior 2. transitive verb pardon somebody: to excuse somebody for a mistake, misunderstanding, wrongdoing, or inappropriate behavior 3. transitive verb cancel obligation: to cancel an obligation such as a debt It is easy to say the word. It is easy to imply that you have forgiven someone. But like most often is the case....actions speak louder than words. In short.... saying and doing are two very seperate things.

S

uch a common word......we throw the word around quite often. There have even been songs written about it. Many people quote the bible from Matthew 18:21-22..... Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.

But do we really understand what the word means? I mean really understand? And when we use the word, do we really “get it?”

The first definition includes “to stop being angry.” Easier said than done......I am guilty of it myself. I say “Oh, I forgive them,” and then something happens to stir up the hurt and the anger and I find myself thinking about a situation that is in the past and “old news.” The only one who suffers in that case is me. The second definition goes into a little more detail including the words “mistake, misunderstanding, wrongdoing and inappropriate behavior.” A pardon for actions that range from intentional to not so intentional.

Last & most important thought… Salvation is a gift and a choice...... Jesus died on the cross as the final sacrifice. When He was resurrected on the 3rd day, he defeated Satan for us. All we have to do is believe that He beat death and acknowledge it with our words. If we believe that and accept Him as our personal savior…we are promised eternal life with Him in Heaven. You can’t earn your way into Heaven; you have to believe your way there. So many people think they “aren’t good enough” to get to Heaven… But… Salvation is a GIFT from God and you don’t earn a gift. Gifts are something someone gives to you and for the gift to be yours, you have to accept it. All we have to do is accept that wonderful gift. I know I have…won’t you?

Page 56

I am so thankful that God knows the definition of that word. I am so thankful that he also means it when he uses it..... that his anger for my sin isn’t rekindled at the drop of a hat. In fact, the bible says In Psalms 103:8-13..... The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy. He will not always chide: neither will he keep his anger for ever. He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities. For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him. As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us. Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him.

When we mess up, and we ask forgiveness.... hath he removed our transgressions from us. I am so glad that in the scripture God doesn’t say, “I shall forgive, but I shall not forget.” Can you really imagine that the things we beat ourselves up over - he has already forgotten? As far as the east is from the west.....how far is that? You can’t measure it, that’s how far. When we drag them back up and feel guilty or bad over them.....we are the only one who suffers. One other scripture that comes to mind regarding forgiveness is Mark 11:25-26..... And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses. But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.

This puts the ball back in our court, so to speak. We expect God to forgive us....to pardon our actions, whether intentional or not. It is only

But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. Romans 5:15 For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Romans 10: 9-10

CHRISTIAN COWBOY COLLECTION reasonable that he expects us to do the same. “Oh but, you don’t know what so and so did to me!” You may say. No, I don’t, but God does. And God will handle “so and so” in his own way. As a matter of fact...Matthew goes on in chapter 18 to touch on this very thing.... Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, which would take account of his servants. And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, which owed him ten thousand talents. But forasmuch as he had not to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made. The servant therefore fell down, and worshipped him, saying, Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.

Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and forgave him the debt. But the same servant went out, and found one of his fellowservants, which owed him an hundred pence: and he laid hands on him, and took him by the throat, saying, Pay me that thou owest. And his fellowservant fell down at his feet, and besought him, saying, Have patience with me, and I will pay thee all. And he would not: but went and cast him into prison, till he should pay the debt. So when his fellowservants saw what was done, they were very sorry, and came and told unto their lord all that was done. Then his lord, after that he had called him, said unto him, O thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thou desiredst me: Shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellowservant, even as I had pity on thee? And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the

Fence Talk

w/ Christa Conway tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him. So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.

Pretty vivid picture isn’t it? Have I been like the servant who wanted forgiving, but was not willing to forgive? Have I expected God to forgive me when I wasn’t willing to forgive others? I am sure that I have, but I want to work on that, on being as forgiving as God wants me to be....as forgiving as he has been to me.....as far as the east is from the west. You can’t measure that......

Until next month....forgive.... Happy Trails & God Bless! Christa

Mystery of the Month....

We are happy to say that “Mystery of the Month” is one of our readers’ favorites and we don’t want to keep you from the fun of the Mystery....however, we are running low on pictures and we have a great story revolving around last month’s picture that we wanted to share with you. Our Mystery of the Month will return in March.

In the meantime, we need you to be sending us those photos from the past....we’d like to use them in our Mystery of the Month. Horses, people, events, etc... Send via email to: thehorseresource@msn.com or mail to The Horse Resource 12601 S CR 200 W Muncie, IN 47302 We will return your original photos to you.

Jan Warvell of The Warvell Family

We have a winner! Diana Keiser of Richmond, Indiana knew our mystery rider. Congrats to Diana! Along with the mystery being solved came a wonderful, interesting and somewhat sad story. Diana tells us from being a personal friend of this beautiful mystery rider that she was a very classy lady and always had a smile for you. We also learned a lot more....... The beautiful lady in the picture is Jan Warvell. Jan and her husband, Jim Warvell, along with their daughters Toni and Sonna entertained audiences across the world. The family (from Weatherford, TX) performed in almost every major American city, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Japan, Brazil, England, Singapore and even Kuwait. Their spectacular acts have been the highlight of PRCA Rodeos, Fairs and Wild West Shows. The Warvell Family’s acts included Roman Riding, Trick Riding, Trick Roping, Comedy Routines and Dancing Horses. Probably the most incredible and breathtaking act was when Jan rode her beautiful white horse named “White Feather” (who was trained by Jim.) According to our sources, the act started with White Feather, the beautiful white horse, long mane and tail flowing as he is running freely in the arena, seemingly keeping rhythm with the music playing....possibly under spotlight. White Feather slowly circles and comes to a stop in front of Jan (dressed as an Indiana Princess) as she reaches out to him, he bows and allows her to slide onto his back. Bareback and bridleless the pair continue to “dance” until the finale of the act when they take flight and jump over a white convertible car to leave audiences awestruck. Our mystery picture to the left caught one of those beautiful moments in time and was featured on the cover of Hoofs and Horns magazine in 1971. (We have not had any luck finding out the photographer.) There was an article written about the family and “White Feather.” According to Buffalo Bill’s Blog, “the article, “Great Horse: White Feather,” is a touching account of an extraordinary horse whose talents were so remarkable the Warvells based their show around him for 12 years. According to Jan, the shows success, on the back of White Feather (literally) paid for their ranch.” Diana informed us that Jim and Jan and their girls remained very active in the horse industry. Jim and Jan have been active owners and trainers of thoroughbred and quarter race horses, Toni is active in cutting, training and judging Equine events. Since the 1992 Euro Disney opening, Sonna has had the starring role as ‘Annie Oakley’ in ‘Le Legende de Buffalo Bill’, Disney’s largest dinner show located in Paris, France. Recently, Jan was with her daughter, Sonna, in France and while there ,sadly, Jan passed away at her daughter’s home a few days before our January issue was published. Our condolences go out to the family on the loss of such a remarkable woman and cowgirl. We continued to do a little more research from what Diana told us and learned that The Warvell family was inducted into the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame in 2010 along with the likes of James Jennings, Tom Reeves, Dean Smith, Dr. James H. “Red” Duke Jr. and Nolan Ryan.
