LETTER FROM THE EDITOR What a great winter we have had so far! If every year was like this I wouldn’t mind Indiana so much....we’ll see what February and March have in store. So far we have one baby on the ground. Of course, she came on the coldest day of the year. God’s creatures never cease to amaze me at their resilience. Gracie said God knew it was going to be cold, so he made sure the baby had her winter coat before she came out...how precious is that? I don’t think there is anything better for kids than living on a farm and being around livestock for a good dose of character and responsibility. Garrett loves to hear me tell him “it builds character” after I’ve given him a chore to do and he questions my direction. (Insert sarcasm here;) We’re busy getting ready for show season around here. Don’t forget to contact us to have your event included in the April issue! Deadline will be March 10th. It’s our biggest issue every year and the one people hang on to the most....so advertisers, you’ll want to be included as well.

A Worming Challenge - Calling DJG

SKM Posted 2012-01-22 2:15 PM (#6121320) Someone needs to invent a palatable wormer. Not a daily one, but one that comes in different chemicals like a paste but only in a top dress pelleted form that horses like.

Our one mare is HORRIBLE to worm and I am tired of fighting with her. I’ve tried every trick in the book and it is still World War five to get her wormed.

So that is my challenge to you, Douglas Gordon. Make a top dress wormer in different chemicals so that those of us with horses that have been ruined by worming can use it and not get our heads pawed off.

You seriously need to take a a Last Will and have your life insurance up to date if you do any of the above mentioned things. pinx05 Posted 2012-01-22 2:28 PM Location: Texas My broodmare is a nightmare to worm, if you even act like your hand might want to touch her mouth her head goes straight up. One day I fought and fought with her with a tube of wormer and she got maybe a quarter of what she was supposed to have by the time it was all said and done. I went to the feed store and they have like alfalfa pellets with wormer in them. Fed them to her and she is so dang picky she turned her nose to them and wouldn’t try them, but after she saw the other horses were getting fed and she wasn’t she wolfed it down with no problems. equussynergy Posted 2012-01-22 2:45 PM Location: Four Corners Colorado I hate twitching. I had a mare exactly like you are describing, if you

even tried to touch her mouth or nose she would fly backwards and sling her head. If you got her in a corner of a stall she would rear up and strike.

Not her fault just what she had been taught. It took me about three weeks of daily work to get her over it. Started with just rubbing her with my hand up her neck then on her face, got her used to me hand in her mouth and playing with her lips.

Repeated with a syringe then a full syringe of apple sauce. After that she was no problem to worm. But if you just rush up to her and stick one in her mouth I’m sure you would still have a problem.

Can’t say doing that will work on every horse and not everyone has time to do that sort of thing.

A tasty wormer would be easier.

Actually, I usually put the wormer in the feed and mix in molasses and they eat it. I do have a few picky ones that I syring it to though and I rub rub rub with the syringe in my hand, rub rub rub, stick my finger in the mouth, rub rub rub, finger and do that a bunch of times and then finally when they quit worrying about it stick the wormer in and push.

Other idea is to give her syringes full of apple sauce or molasses or something like that every day until she looks forward to the syringe, and then for a day or so after. crossarrowk Posted 2012-01-22 5:46 PM Location: East River South Dakota This sounds silly, but.... I play a lot with colts letting them mouth their halter ropes. I let them take it in their mouth and then hold it in across their tounge like a bit and just play with it, letting them mouth away. Then when I want to worm them I just stick the tube in while their mouth is full of lead rope and pop it in back of the lead rope in their mouth. They are wormed before they ever had a clue. It works on older horses with issues really good too if they will play with their lead rope in their mouth like that. Seems to make it a fun thing rather than “me vs. them “ ordeal... in him....I bought one of the headstalls from valley vet that made worming easy with him....it is called a Grooma EZ wormer..item number is 29654...just go to www.valleyvet.com and type in the item number and the picture will pop up. hope this helps.

Couldn’t catch a good bit of them. I gave them about a 1/4 scoop of grain, added some bran and water to make soup and squirted the wormer in and mixed it up. One at a time, I had to let them in a stall to eat it. Got about 20 wormed this way PaintedPrincess Posted 2012-01-23 9:37 AM I had a colt that was bad with the wormer too, I took a syringe about the size of a dewormer tube and would fill it every day with apple sauce or mollasses and would squirt it in his mouth when he settled down. He eventually learned to love it. And when it was time to worm he would think it would be something yummy, take it no problem, and then storm off angry. he stopped being a baby about actually taking it. He used to rear and pull away.

But someone posted this video not too long ago http://www.getrotationright.com/Video.asp I will have to say I was terrified of deworming him. he is the type that lunges forward, goes wild eyed, snorts, and becomes completely uncontrollable and unpredictable. I started with a dewormer tube full of apple sauce. Tapped his shoulder and worked from there. it took 5 days of doing this before I could ever touch his face. but now I can deworm him in under a minute.

The National Pole Bending Association is moving their National Championship Show to Liberty, Kentucky and will be held at the Central Ky Ag / Expo Center.

The show will be June 29, 30 and July 1.

There will be two new classes added this year, they will be the Amateur Stake Race and Youth Stake Race.

News Indiana Bred Quarter Horses Nominated for National Honors Two Indiana Bred Quarter Horses have been nominated for American Quarter Horse Racing Association National honors. A Bitter Sweet Song and Lovemelikethat have both been nominated as the 2011 Three Year Old Filly Racing Champion of the Year. They join four additional horses on the ballot for this honor.

Bitter Sweet Song (Agouti – Whatasweetsong, by Shawne Bug), owned

by Debbie Smith and Randy Haffner, accumulated $108,539 in earnings during 2011. The Haffner trained filly completed the racing year with eight starts that included four wins, one second and one third place finish. Her wins include the $100,000 Indiana Blue River Derby at Indiana Downs.

Lovemelikethat (Likenothinyoueversaw – First Smart Stride, by First Smart Money), owned by Cooter Daniel boasted $148,636 in earnings in 2011 resulting in career earnings of $236,280. The filly, trained by John McCreary, won not only the $100,000 Sterlie Bertram Memorial, but also QHRAI Derby at Hoosier Park completing the racing year with seven starts that included five wins and two thirds. Lovemelikethat was also recently recognized as the Quarter Horse Breed Development Three Year Old Filly Champion and Horse of the Year.

“These two horses are not only an extraordinary example of the quality of horses being produced, but also a great achievement for the Quarter Horse Breed Development Program in Indiana,” noted Jessica Barnes, Director of Racing and Breed Development for the Indiana Horse Racing Commission.

Yes, there were many changes in 2011 and many people got upset, but we are on our way forward. Many of the changes last year were due to cost. The Hoosier Horse Fair had not increased their prices for several years and it caught up with them. One example I would like to let you know about is the cost of the Indiana State Fair Grounds rental. Did you know it cost about $100,000?

Trainer Martinez Saddles Pair Of Sunday Stakes Winners…Skyline Lover Disqualified In Moonstone Hialeah, FL / January 22, 2012 – Trainer Ricardo Martinez, who entered

the day with five wins from a limited number of 23 starters, was a perfect two-for-two Sunday, sending out longshot Jess Phenomenal to victory in The Banyan Tree and coming back two races later to score in The City Of Hialeah with Freaking.

But the real buzz trackside came after Sunday’s Moonstone, in which Skyline Lover -–previously undefeated in six local starts-– was disqualified after an apparent two-length victory over Flyin Fish in the 660-yard marathon down the historic Widener chute. The stewards posted the inquiry sign immediately after Skyline Lover crossed the finish line and, after receiving additional objections from one jockey and two trainers, ruled that the original first-place finisher had interfered with both Flyin Fish and Louisianafeature One. Revising the order of finish, the judges placed Skyline Lover eighth and last behind Louisianafeature One. Recapping the stakes races, Logans Dash (Toast To Dash – Logans Game), saddled by Manuel Mata and ridden by Jeremy Garcia scored a solid win over Okey Dokey Diamond in the $22,250 Miami-Dade County Stakes for three-year-old fillies. The winner was clocked in 15.428 seconds for 300 yards and earned $13,350 for owner Annibal Hernandez.

Jess Phenomenal (Feature Mr Jess – Miss Mighty Casady), sent postward at 13-1, was up in the final jump under Francisco Ramirez, Jr. to win the $22,500 Banyan Tree over Bold Badon. The seven-year-old gelding covered 250 yards in 13.137 seconds and earned $13.500 for his owner Alejandro Medina.

After the change in the $27,000 Moonstone, the victory went to Flyin Fish (Fishers Dash – Jazzing Cheree), who was saddled by Richard Sedillo and ridden by Brian Theriot. The winner’s share of $16,200 went to the Double Eagle Ranch, Inc. and Buena Suerte Equine.

In the $22,500 City Of Hialeah, Freaking (Tr Dasher – Chickasis) was all out under leading rider Alex Baldillez, Jr. to tally by a neck over Opportunity Zooms, with Jesse In Town another length back in third. The victor, owned and trained by Ricardo Martinez, ran 400 yards in 19.565 and earned $13,500.

The total mutuel handle for the 20th day of the 2011-2012 Quarter Horse season was $170,816 with a raucous crowd estimated at 4,000 witnessing the day’s proceedings.

News Ann Jemima, bred in Oklahoma by her owner, is a four-year old mare by Country Chicks Man – Mea Brick House. She was sent postward in the Perseverance as a 2.40-1 favorite and stopped the timer in 16.577 seconds for the race distance of 330 yards.

Sunday’s added-money victory was her second consecutive win at the meeting as she stretched out from an allowance win at 220 yards here on Christmas Eve. She won for the fourth time in 18 lifetime starts and earned $13,425 for her connections.

While the top two finishers were battling it out for the win, the goings-on behind them were equally eventful. Original third-place finisher Mary’s Corazon was disqualified after lugging in and placed eighth. After that change, the revised order of finish was Ann Jemima, Iama Pyc, Eye Opening Favorite, and a dead-heat for fourth between Kinky Boots and Jacis Flashy Girl. Before the race, First Time Favorite was scratched at the gate by order of the stewards when she became cast in her stall.

Meantime, leading rider Baldillez recorded his second “five bagger” in two weekends to up his victory total to 19, five better than Brian Theriot and seven up on 2010-2011 riding champ Oscar Delgado.

The total mutuel handle for the 17th day of the 2011-2012 Quarter Horse season was $179,450 with live racing on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon witnessed by a festive throng estimated at 4,000.

Live racing continues at Hialeah Park with a new post time for the remainder of the season, through closing day February 19, first post will be at 2:25 PM ET. The racing office plans to schedule nine races on Fridays and 10 races on Saturdays and Sundays.

2012 QUARTER HORSE SEASON STAKES SCHEDULE FEATURES 44 RACES, TOTAL ESTIMATED PURSES OVER $5 MILLION December 21, 2011 OKLAHOMA CITY – Remington Park’s lucrative 2012

American Quarter Horse & Mixed-breed Season gets underway on March 2. The season features a 44-stakes race schedule with 23 graded races, 11 of them Grade 1, and an overall estimated worth of $5,025,000. The richest event on the calendar is the Grade 1, $1,000,000 Heritage Place Futurity on May 26.

Once again, Remington Park is proud to host numerous futurities including three major Quarter Horse events. The historic Grade 2, $325,000 (estimated) Oklahoma Futurity at 300 yards takes place on St. Patrick’s Day, Saturday, March 17.

In April, Oklahoma-breds are featured in the $750,000 (estimated) Remington Park Futurity. The richest state-bred event in track history will be contested at 330-yards on Saturday, April 14.

The Grade 1, $1,000,000 Heritage Place Futurity will culminate the Quarter Horse futurity schedule. Run for the fifth consecutive year for at least a million dollars, the Heritage Place Futurity has produced such stars as Stolis Winner (2008) who went on the win the All American Futurity that year, on his way to becoming the sport’s all-time richest runner.

The 3-year-old Quarter Horses will have their time alongside their 2-yearold counterparts in derbies held on the same programs as the top futurities.

The $135,000 (estimated) Oklahoma Derby will be run at 350 yards on March 17. Top Oklahoma-bred 3-year-olds will compete in the $250,000 (estimated) Remington Park Derby on April 14 at 400 yards. Then, on the final weekend of the season, the Grade 2, $275,000 (estimated) Heritage

Place Derby will be run at 400 yards on May 26.

Great pride is taken in presenting a solid series of races for older horses at Remington Park. The 2012 season stakes schedule gets underway on Opening Weekend with the Grade 2, $50,000 Eastex Handicap at 350 yards, beginning the series of races for older horses. The Grade 1, $100,000 Leo Stakes helps wrap the month, at 400 yards on March 24.

April features the Grade 2, $50,000 Bob Moore Memorial Stakes at 300 yards on April 14. Older Oklahoma-bred horses have an opportunity in the restricted Grade 1, $100,000 Sooner State Stakes at 400 yards on April 28. May brings a pair of superb events with the Grade 2, $110,000 (estimated) Bank of America Remington Park Challenge Championship on May 6 followed by the richest race for 3-year-olds and older in the season.

The Grade 1, $250,000 Remington Park Championship, an invitational event, will be run on May 27. The race winner will receive a berth to the prestigious $750,000 Champion of Champions at Los Alamitos in southern California in December.

Both the Bank of America Remington Park Challenge Championship and the Remington Park Championship are contested at 440 yards.

Fillies and mares will again have a set of races just for them with the Grade 3, $50,000 Decketta Stakes at 350 yards on March 24; the $50,000 (estimated) Merial Remington Park Distaff Challenge on May 6 and the Grade 2, $50,000 Junos Request Stakes on May 26. The latter two races are at 400 yards.

Remington Park also features a set of stakes races geared to the longer distance group including the Grade 3, $50,000 Pauls Valley Handicap on April 1; the Grade 3, $55,000 (estimated) Red Cell Remington Park Distance Challenge on May 6 and the Grade 3, $50,000 Remington Park Distance Handicap on Memorial Day Monday, May 28, the final day of the season.

Paints and Appaloosas will also be featured in futurities, derbies and older horse stakes events throughout the season. The Grade 1, $85,000 (estimated) Oklahoma Paint Futurity at 300 yards on March 17 will begin the run of stakes events for Paints and/or Appaloosas. That same night the Grade 1, $60,000 (estimated) Graham Paint & Appaloosa Derby will be run at 350 yards.

The Paint Stallion Breeders’ Association races will once again take place in April. The Grade 1, $85,000 (estimated) American Paint Classic Futurity at 350 yards will be contested on April 21. On the same night, the Grade 1, $40,000 (estimated) American Paint Derby will be run at 400 yards. The rich Grade 1, $250,000 (estimated) Graham Paint & Appaloosa Futurity will be run at 350 yards on May 26.

Older Paints and Appaloosas will also have their stakes attempts with the Grade 1, $35,000 Mister Lewie Memorial Handicap at 400 yards on April 14 and the Grade 1, $30,000 National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum Stakes at 440 yards on May 19.

The $25,000 Americana Stakes, for 2-year-old Appaloosas, will be featured at 330 yards on April 21.

The Remington Park stakes schedule also includes an encompassing set of 18 stakes races just for eligible Oklahoma-breds. The feature afternoon of Oklahoma-bred stakes races will fall on Sunday, May 20. There are six stakes that afternoon to showcase the top state-breds, four divisional events worth $30,000, followed by a pair of restricted Grade 3, $50,000 races in the Easy Jet Stakes for 2-year-olds and the Jack Brooks Stakes for 3-year-olds, both at 350 yards.

JOCKEY G.R. CARTER HONORED WITH CHAMPION AWARD FOR 9TH TIME, OKLAHOMA-OWNED HORSES EARN TITLES Thursday, January 19, 2012 - Jockey G.R. Carter, an Oklahoma City

resident and 14-time leading rider at Remington Park, was honored Wednesday evening with his ninth American Quarter Horse Association Champion Jockey Award. Carter was presented with the 2011 award at the annual champions’ announcement ceremony at the Heritage Place in Oklahoma City.

The champions are decided by a vote of committee, organized by the AQHA.

Carter has won more Champion Jockey honors than any other rider in the award’s 26-year history. In 2011, Carter rode 171 winners from 885 starts, with earnings of $4,311,455 to narrowly lead all jockeys by money earned. He was $33,312 ahead of 2009 champion jockey Ramon Sanchez. Carter posted 91 victories at Remington Park in 2011.

Carter, a native of Pawhuska, Okla., rode Grade 1 winners Llano Teller, Sixes Streak and Louisiana Senator in 2011, as well as sharing riding duties on champions Feature Mr Bojangles and De Passem Okey.

De Passem Okey – 2011 Distance Champion

De Passem Okey, owned by Steve Holt of Guthrie, Okla., won his second consecutive AQHA Distance Champion award, given to the top horse excelling in races around the turn at 870 yards. De Passem Okey won the Grade 3, $75,000 Remington Park Distance Handicap in 2011, his most lucrative victory of the year.

De Passem Okey has won 15 of 32 lifetime starts and earned $290,821.

Spit Curl Diva – 2011 Champion Aged Mare

Spit Curl Diva returned in 2011 to capture her third champion title, as the AQHA Champion Aged Mare. The 6-year-old mare, owned by the Lepic-Morgan Partnership, including Sara Morgan of Edmond, Okla., won three of seven races and earned $118,415.

In her career, Spit Curl Diva has won 19 of 37 starts and earned $829,353. She was trained in 2011 by Jody Brown of Choctaw, Okla. and 10-time AQHA Champion Trainer Paul Jones. She was ridden in all of her starts by Brown’s husband, jockey David Brown.

As busy of a year that 2011 was, January 2012 started out with a bang!!

We started this year out like we have many years in the past with the Stallion Service Auction Banquet on January 7th. Once again, the amphitheater at the Crowne Plaza Hotel was filled to capacity during the Stallion Service Auction where Auctioneers Ted Begley and Greg Bonfer, along with Mr. Pedigree, Tom Mosley, sold 59 horses for nearly $52,000. The buyers were there and the horses sold!! Horses that didn’t sell on the 7th will be available for purchase until July 1st, but Don DeHart bought his on the 7th and won $1,000 in the big drawing (had to be there)!! The banquet hall was filled to capacity as VIP’s from Hoosier Park, Indiana Downs, The Indiana Horse Racing Commission and AQHA were part of the mix. Johnne Dobbs from AQHA, who has many ties to the Indiana Quarter Horse Racing Industry of yesteryear, addressed the crowd. We were honored to have her join us this year. Johnne will be AQHA President in 2013. Carter Riley and Calvin Prescott were inducted into the QHRAI Hall of Fame, as were the spectacular horses Jaguar Rocket and Miss Roxie Little. The 2011 Champion horses were awarded with brass and glass, but the winner of the biggest surprise and the QHRAI Presidents Award was Margaret Thompson for all the great things she contributed to QHRAI last year!!

I heard the food was good and the band was great and the event went off without a hitch. The silent auction proceeds are going to our friend Richie Gilliard. Thank you to all of my Quarter Horse Friends who helped make the banquet a huge success and thank you to everyone who attended to make this our biggest event of the year.

Indiana’s 2011 Horse of the Year, Lovemelikethat, and Bitter Sweet Song were both nominated for AQHA 3 Year Old Filly Champion. Did you hear me? Our Indiana breds, homegrown right here from Hoosierville, were recognized by AQHA as top 3 year old fillies in the country.

They were two of the six nominees. Congratulations to both horses and their connections for these top honors. Spit Curl Diva, who made her 2011 debut at Indiana Downs, earned Champion aged mare honors.

Indiana has broken into the BIGTIME and will only keep going!! How many of you plan to have a champion nominee next year?

Q.H.R.A.I. was active at the January Indiana Horse Racing Commission Meeting. The 2012 Quarter Horse Breed Development Program was approved, as were several rule changes, including new lower levels for Bute and Clenbuterol . We will be posting the specifics on qhrai. net!!

Stall applications for Indiana Downs are available and must be submitted by February 17th. An exact date is not set yet for the track to open, but according to Jon Schuster, it will be the second or third week in March. Stay tuned for the schooling race dates for 2 year olds to be announced. There will likely be a day in April and another in May. The State House is buzzing with Right To Work protestors, and there is still a threat of Horse Racing Purse Revenue to be attacked. Your QHRAI Board of Directors is keeping tuned up on places to be and people to see, but please contact your local legislators now to let them know how much you invest in the local economy by racing Quarter Horses.

Ask them to please support our industry and not support any cuts to our purse money from gaming revenue.

I just got info from Angela Demaree from the IHRC that Purdue is now offering Piroplasmosis testing, which is still required for horses entering the tracks this year. The costs at Purdue are supposed to be much less than the $75 and up costs we all paid last year. Ask your vet for details!!

-----------------------Equine Piroplasmosis Testing Offered ---------------------The Indiana Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory is approved to perform equine piroplasmosis analyses for inter- and intrastate movement and will offer testing for Equine Piroplasmosis beginning January 1, 2012.

To be eligible for a waiver of the test fee for state mandated testing, serum samples submitted for Equine Piroplasmosis must state on the ADDL Accession form that the samples are from horses currently belonging to Indiana owners that will be at the Indiana race tracks: Hoosier Park, Anderson, IN, and Indiana Downs, Shelbyville, IN. Samples

submitted to ADDL for testing must be drawn by a licensed and accredited veterinarian, the animal ID must be listed, and reason for testing clearly stated on the ADDL submission form.

Testing for international export or for cases with clinical signs compatible with Equine Piroplasmosis must be tested at NVSL. The charge for non-state mandated piroplasmosis testing for both B. caballi and T. equi will be $24 ($7.00 each for B.caballi and T. equi, plus the $10 ADDL accession fee).

We hope to finalize our announcement as to where the National Finals will be in the coming month. There will be a couple new Preferred Shows this year in Cloverdale, IN. January Newsletter Well another year has come and gone. For me that means more pounds put on from the holidays and another year older. I don’t look forward to trying to diet because I am horrible at it and exercising doesn’t agree with me at all. I do look forward to riding my horse and all the IBRA shows now available in Indiana. If you haven’t checked out our web site @ IBRA.us you are really missing a lot. And don’t forget to look up our Facebook page @ IBRA of Indiana. Lots of great news about shows and happenings that are going on in the state. There is a rumor of a IBRA north vs south state show fund-raiser barrel race brewing on our face book page. I tell you I turn my back and the reps run wild but stay tuned for all the fun!

I am also pleased to tell everyone that we now have made $236 for this years Indiana charity: Susan G. Komen. A big Thanks go out to Bronson, Penny, and Danielle Bart who generously donated their time to sell 50/50 tickets at the January C Bar C show on Saturday. And another big thanks go out to all the barrel racers that bought the tickets to help with this years Indiana charity. That makes barrel racing a great family fun activity and a way to give to a charity that helps fight breast cancer.

Now if it could just figure out how barrel racing could help me lose weight. Oh well, I may not see you on the tread mill but I will definitely see you on a horse.

Just a quick recap from the IBRA finals in Ohio that was held in Oct. Of course we are all aware that Karissa Gipple and her great horse Yo Down were the Youth champions winning the long go and the Youth finals and also finishing 3rd in the short go of the Open Finals after placing in the 1D of both preliminary open rounds. Jessica Demell and Ima Lil Outlaw placed 2nd in the 4D youth and Ima Six Gun Smoking and Jessica placed 6th. Megan Griffin and Moon Lark Bars placed 10th in the 1D of the Open finals and Josie Teeters and Leos Sandy Baby placed 7th in the 4D. Lisa Steibs and Sunny placed 2nd in the 2D of the Masters long go. I was very proud of everyone from Wisconsin that attended the finals. Everyone was very friendly and showed great sportsmanship.

Hello Everyone, What a mild, yet beautiful winter we have had thus far. This has been great for those of us without access to an indoor arena allowing many to continue barrel racing much further into winter than usual.

I hope everyone has noticed a much more diverse area of approved shows compared to our usual winter show season. This has been accomplished through co-approving with IN. Saddle Up Arena and Yankeetown Arena are two fine arenas not far across the river that offer fine facilities. C Bar C (Crossroads Arena) in Cloverdale, IN has also reopened and is producing several IBRA Super Shows and KY co-approved shows.

Most notably we would like thank our in state arenas for their continued support including Hodge Arena, Branum Farms and Red Barn Arena.

Jessie Minneman Returns the Favor to her AQHA mare, Gracie

Indiana’s First “in clinic” Stem cell Treatment

essie Minneman has been around horses most of her life. Growing up with horses was the norm for her as was being successful competing at horse shows in several different classes. Jessie has shown Halter, Showmanship, Western Pleasure, Horsemanship, Trail and Western Riding at levels as high as the All American Quarter Horse Congress with success.

She lives in Milan, Indiana and is supported in her horse related activities by her parents, Julie and Jim Minneman. Her dad, Jim, is a blacksmith so he’s been around - and knows his share about - horses.

Jessie’s horse showing days almost came to an end in the summer of 2007. On July 15 she was at a horse show riding a gelding that she had ridden many times before when it started to rain. Her dad asked her to dismount and stand under a tarp until the rain passed, which she did.

Once the rain stopped, Jessie then remounted and made her way to the make-up arena on her gelding. While in the make-up arena, her horse suddenly began to buck, catching Jessie off guard. She managed to stay on and get him stopped, but as soon as she thought it was over, he reared up and fell over on her. He then scrambled to get up, slipping and retrying. In the process of trying to get up, he kicked Jessie in the head. While still conscience, Jessie tried to get away.

Immediately medical help was on the way and Jessie was flown directly to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. She spent a long two weeks in the hospital and during that time was in ICU and in a coma for five of those days.

Doctors finally released Jessie to return home and the first thing she did was head to the barn to see her horse.

Jessie’s confidence had been shaken, but she was determined to get back in the saddle. It was just going to have to be a special horse that could give her a sense of security and help her regain the confidence she had lost.

While at the Quarter Horse Congress the fall of 2007, and on crutches, Jessie and her family found Gracie. “My Good Sugar” is her registered name. She is a beautiful red roan mare and Jessie fell in love with her.

The Minneman’s purchased the mare and took her home, Jessie immediately starting building a relationship with the mare, but it was December before she got the courage to climb on her back. Once she did, the rest was history. Gracie and Jessie became a great team. Slowly, Gracie patiently waitied for Jessie to get the courage to trot, then to lope. Gracie built Jessie’s confidence one step at a time.

The team went on to compete at their first show in April of the following year and never looked back. The have obtained many titles, including AQHA Congress success as well as leading the IQHA for three years.

Memories were made and a bond was established that was so strong that when it came time to return the favor, Jessie had to give it a try.

You see, in April of 2011, Gracie started showing signs of lameness in her rear left ankle. She was diagnosed with arthritis.

The Minnemans were determined to get Gracie help if it was out there. After what she had done for Jessie, they felt they owed it to her. They tried four different vets until the finally heard about Dr. Brad King of King Veterinary Clinic in Daleville, Indiana.

Dr. King performed Indiana’s first “in clinic” stem cell treatment on Gracie. The treatment was performed at his clinic just off of Interstate 69 on December 5, 2011.

When you mention stem cell treatment most people have an immediate reaction due to the publicized controversy over using embryonic stem cells. However, the treatment we are referring to here is done by a completely different way of obtaining stem cells. They come from the fat of the patients themselves.

During the procedure, fat is removed from the horse’s hip and then stem cells are separated from the adipose (fat) tissue.

They are then activated with MediVet’s patented LED technology. Once activated, these cells are administered intravenously.

Happy Valentine’s Day have to admit, so far, winter in Indiana has not been so bad. Compared to my past experience, this year has been extremely mild. (There was a cold spell there at the end of December, but it passed rather quickly.)

I am enjoying being able to head down to the barn without having to be dressed in my doggie coat. Yes, I admit it.....I have a coat (I mean, a coat besides the one God gave me.) I love my doggie coat when it is cold. It keeps me really warm. It also gives me clout with all the other dogs. The only problem is that it kind of hinders the mouse hunting. Sometimes it gets wadded up under my feet and trips me up if I work too hard while I’m out and about with it on. As long as none of the other dogs see me all tangled up in the thing, no harm done. I just have to wait for one of the people to come and straighten it out.

It is a “hand me down” from a dog that lived here long before me. I think I’ve heard them refer to my predicessor as “Dauber the Dachshund.”

He was a weiner-dog, just like Princess Annabelle. If I’ve learned anything about those kind of dogs after living with one for two years, it’s that they think they are in charge of everyone....and that people were put here to serve them. If Dauber was anything like my roomate, Annabelle, I don’t think we would’ve gotten along very well. (Although I am happy to have inherited his doggie coat - and may he rest in peace.)

I don’t think the Donkey likes dogs very much. He tends to kick quite often in my general vicinity and pins those super-sized ears back whenever I - or any of the other dogs - am within striking distance.

Maybe it’s just me...he is smaller than all of the other horse-like animals around here, but I’m a little leary when a foot that is as hard as a rock comes flying at my head. He just laughs his ever-so-annoying laugh, but I don’t see the humor.

On the other hand, sometimes I do get a chuckle out of him. He is rather funny to watch from a distance. The other day he got tangled up in a horse blanket (he’s quite the nib-nose.) He ended up spooking and dragging the thing around the yard thinking it was attacking him. I could hardly move for days afterwards, I laughed so hard - my sides ached.

He also thinks he can escape from under corral gates by rolling under them. He did it a few times when he was a baby and hasn’t forgotten that it worked at one time. When he gets mad (and he does quite often) he throws himself down next to a gate and starts rolling over and over.

Then he stops and looks around to see if he has managed to roll over to the other side of the fence (where the grass is greener...Hee Haw Haw!! sorry, I couldn’t resist.)

The donkey is quite a trip. They need to put him on YouTube. Maybe I’ll see if I can master the video camera next.

Form & Function - What effect do they have on each other?

Article By Dr. Steve Fisch, DVM When looking at a horse’s rear legs consider that the hindquarter muscles are the horse’s “engine” generating energy as the fibers contract and release. That energy is transformed through the hips, stifles, hocks, and fetlocks. The angles of these joints allow them to close and open to provide propulsion. The forelegs support about 60% to 65% of a horse’s weight. This is why a horse is naturally on the forehand. They also have propulsive ability but the front legs main function is that of steering and support. The angles in both front and rear limbs help absorb shock as they close and then deliver energy again as they open.

Just a few weeks ago I was eating breakfast with an illustrious group of farriers. While we were waiting for everyone to arrive I was telling the group about a horse that I had performed a purchase exam on. I told them that the owner wanted to know if he could correct a certain conformation fault on a four year old. One of the farriers said it was five years to late.

The farrier made a good point with the answer. The best time to correct a horse’s conformation is before conception when the sire and dam are being chosen. Conformation traits, both good and bad, tend to pass on to future generations. The problem is that most of us don’t get to choose our horse’s parents and even if we did we need to know what to look for.

Advising a future owner on a horse’s conformation is just part of what a purchase exam is all about but it is a very important part. The first thing to remember is that all top athletes need to have good conformation and be structurally correct but there are differences when comparing different disciplines. The next important point to remember is that there will always be horses that perform at the very best of their breed or discipline that have less than ideal conformation. So when we see that horse that is toed out, bench kneed, low heeled, with a straight stifle that just qualified to the reining championships in Gladstone, or won the Hampton Classic in jumping, the Triple Crown in racing, etc. do we forget about aiming for the ideal conformation when choosing a horse? The answer is no. We use it as part of the big picture of the whole horse and our intended use for him. We use it as information when formulating our final decision.

Balance is also an aspect to consider when looking at conformation.

Your potential horse may have nice straight legs, good sloping shoulders and fetlocks but he may be heavily muscled on the forehand and have little muscling in the rear quarters or no “engine” for energy.

Ask The Vet

A straight angled hind limb may include a straight stifle and a straight stifle is more prone to upward fixation of the patella or “catching in his stifle”. A rear leg with straight hocks and stifles is more prone to concussive related injuries because the shock absorbing angles aren’t there. A rear leg that is too angled is more subject to degenerative joint disease (DJD) of the hock. This is because of the compressive forces put on the bones of the front of the hock.

Fetlocks with too much slope or angle of the fetlocks on the front or rear legs can cause damage to the suspensory ligament or flexors tendons.

This is because an excessive angle causes these structures to become stretched to tight when put under stress.

Conformationally correct front legs are important to an athletic horse because they support 60% to 65% of his weight. The forearm, knees (carpus), and cannon bone need to be in alignment. If the knee is offset to the left or right and the forearm and cannon bone come in and out of it anywhere but in the center this will cause one side or the other of the knee to wear out faster. If the horse is “back at the knee” it will predispose him to chip fractures in the knee. These wear and tear problems result because the leg is out of balance. This is one place genetics plays a strong role. Some horse may have crooked legs but they may have joints that are made of very strong and well made cartilage. This is why it is good to know the soundness history of your horse’s relatives if it is something that can be found out. These will be the horses that defy the good conformation logic. They may have poor conformation, but they are genetically superior in other areas.

Having an eye for good conformation is part science and part art.

Knowing how to recognize it comes from looking at thousands of horses and from knowing how all the parts fit together. Make sure when you are choosing your next horse that you have a veterinarian who is knowledgeable in equine conformation to evaluate the horse. But keep in mind that it is not the veterinarian’s job to predict how well any given horse will suit your intended use. The veterinarian’s job is to provide you with information so you can make an informed decision about your horse’s suitability.

ATTENTION SHOOTERS>>> CMSA has a new class!

Cowboy Mounted SHOTGUN competition shall be accomplished with the first five balloon targets being engaged with a 45 single action revolver and the second two targets being engaged with a double barrel shotgun. The Rundown in mounted competition consists of five balloon targets usually in a straight line, however the Rundown in SHOTGUN will consist of two balloon targets placed in position 1 and 3 or 2 and 4. Penalties are the same as CMSA revolver rules, 5 seconds for every missed target.

For the new SHOTGUN class the shotgun type shall be a side by side, “coach gun style” and can either have external hammers or internal firing pins (no visible external hammers). Barrel length no shorter than 18 inches with an overall length of at least 26 inches. Any gauge shotgun is legal, however, an adapter will be required on all, except for a .410 guage. This shotgun requires no adaptation to fire pistol ammo.

CMSA will track points and recognize the 2012 point winners at the State, Regional and National levels. The divisions will be the same as in the Rifle class, Limited (levels 1-3) and Open (levels 4-6). There will be no gender split in the National Rifle/Shotgun points programs.

She is also busy training her own pony “Spike” for Cowboy Mounted Shooting. Spike is a great trail pony however, Kylee says he has some arena issues that need work. Watch for Kylee at the 1st Ohio shoots, she usually wears beautiful long dresses that flow in the wind while riding Sky! Just imagine coming to a 1st Ohio shoot for the weekend, dressin up in your Sunday Cowboy or Cowgirl duds, bucklen up your chinks, saddling up Ole’Buck, grabbin you favorite cowboy hat and strappin on your 6 shooters to ride and shoot all weekend, AND NOW you can shoot Rifle and Shotgun! Howdy everyone and welcome to the February issue of the Fast Horse Resource Magazine and another segment of Indiana Rough Riders Cowboy Mounted Shooting.

This is the time of year when we start receiving phone calls and emails from people wanting to get started in Cowboy Mounted Shooting or from shooters wanting to purchase or start a new horse. I’d like to do something a little different in this issue and touch on some of the most common questions we get and address them for you.

Q: How do I train my horse to gunfire?

A: If you want to get your horse off to a good start and it’s your first time I strongly urge you and your horse to attend a CMSA clinic hosted by one of the local clubs. This is where we usually have our quickest and best results.

Last year IRR held a new shooter’s clinic in New Castle, IN. We had 18 new horses and at the end of the clinic we were shooting courses on 17 of them. There are ways to train your horse at home; however I strongly suggest you talk to a Cowboy Mounted Shooter for advice before starting. It’s easier to train a horse correctly from the start than it is to retrain a horse not started correctly.

Q: How long does it take to train a shooting horse?

A: This primarily depends on two things. One is the horse’s willingness to accept new obstacles, to negotiate the courses while being ridden one handed, and to accept gunfire. The other is how the rider/ trainer presents the whole package to the horse. Unfortunately, there are horses that never fully accept the gunfire even when wearing ear plugs and there are those that just don’t have the athletic ability to run and turn the courses. For the ones that do accept it all, it still takes generally a year of practice and competition to get most of the issues worked out and things working smoothly between horse and rider.

Q: I bought a horse that’s been trained to gunfire for CMSA, would it be safe to shoot off of him in the woods?

A: Not necessarily, most competition horses associate the gunfire with being in the arena and seeing the balloons so they are expecting to hear the gunfire. If you take a shot at something out in the woods without the horse expecting it, things may not work out as well as you had hoped. A horse gets startled and jumps just like we do at a loud unexpected noise. Think of it this way, you may be lighting fire crackers all night long, throwing them out in front of everyone and not flinching at all, but, if someone puts one on the ground behind you and lights it unexpectedly you’ll most likely jump out of your skin when it goes off. Your horse reacts the same way. But don’t worry; there are ways to overcome this with your horse if you want to shoot off him in places other than competition.

Q: What type of guns and holsters should I buy?

A: The caliber and type of gun is a .45 long colt, single action, no rear site and a fixed front site. Manufacturer is a personal choice and we all have our favorites based on reliability, and of course, price. Given that, based on barrel length, grip width, weight, hammer design, and a

few other things, I wouldn’t recommend buying anything until you’ve had a chance to handle a few different models and styles. Holsters are the same way. Side holsters, cross draws and front holsters have to all be considered. Once again, a clinic is an excellent place to do this. At most clinics, different styles of guns and holsters are available for you to handle, examine, evaluate. and use to help determine what’s best for you. One of the worst things you can do is spend a lot of money on a set of guns and holsters that you’re not pleased with when you start using them in competition.

Q: What’s the general cost to attend a clinic?

A: The clinic price varies from club to club depending on arena cost and a few other things. You can usually figure a range of $45 to $75 per person. Most clubs will have fliers on their website with information and cost on upcoming clinics.

Q: Where are the shooting competitions for CMSA held?

A: We are very fortunate to have three clubs in Indiana. The Indiana Rough Riders (IRR) in the Central and Southern part of the state. The Indiana Mounted Regulators (IMR) in the Northern part and the Illiana Rangers in the West/Southwest part of the state. There are also two clubs in Ohio, 1st Ohio and the Northern Ohio Clubs. All of these clubs have their own websites with schedules and locations of their shoots.

If you live in Indiana you should be able to find a few competitions within an hour or two of your home. The club websites can be found by going to www.cmsa.com .

Q: What’s the best advice you can give me for getting started in Cowboy Mounted Shooting?

A: CLINIC!! CLINIC!!

CLINIC!! I can’t stress this enough! Attend a clinic similar to the one IRR will be hosting at the Henry County Saddle Club New Castle, Indiana on May 12, 2012. Check out the different styles of guns, holsters and period clothing. Listen to the instructors and don’t be afraid to ask questions.

Hope everyone had a wonderful New Year! I got a little time off from college for Christmas and got to spend some time in Florida.... It was great.

A New Year How Refreshing

Clint is an 18 year old recent graduate of East Central High School. His parents are Terrie VanVolkenburgh and respectively Joe Trentman. He has grown up in the horse world, both parents have rode almost all their life...Clint's grandfather as some of you may remember was the late Terry VanVolkenburgh, who would run up and down the fences when his daughters would run barrels. Clint began barrel racing at the age of 4 with a pony, then went on to particpate in Jr. Rodeo and his favorite event was the sheep riding, had to believe he is now a barrel racer. He has won the Ohio Youth NBHA and Indiana Youth and Open NBHA , he has also won the congress youth barrel four times, and was runner up in the Congress Sweepstakes, placed at Josey Jr. world numerous times, and won the NBHA Youth World 1d in 2006. He loves to barrel race and is now trying his hand at the futurities. In Clint's spare time he mows grass for a part time job and is also very active in his church where he and his cousins are bible school helpers. Clint also volunteers one day a week at a school in Cincinatti where he spends time tutoring other kids in reading.

Indiana High School Rodeo Association

s I sit here typing this months newsletter from the IHSRA, it is snowing like crazy outside! Of course, I live in northern Indiana, so it’s a little hard to avoid this time of year! Can you believe our season is half over already? It seems like it just began!

Where did the time go? I guess it’s true what they say “Time flies when you’re having fun!”

During this rodeo down time it can be very challenging to find things to write about. I spend a lot of time thinking….and thinking…(ok…

Day dreaming) of things to tell you all about. I was typing up my Athlete of the Month Bio’s the other day and got to thinkin’, if someone was to ask ME what I liked the most about the Indiana High School Rodeo Association, I would have to tell them just how much I loved the opportunities it presented to not only my kids, but to us as parents as well. I’m not gonna lie….it can be very frustrating, it is costly, and you spend A LOT of hours on the road, in the heat, the sun, the rain, and sometimes in a heaping amount of mud. But despite all of that, you are spending quality time with your kids. Precious time and memories they will remember forever.

Because of our involvement with the IJRA, our kids learned a sport not offered in school that taught them first hand responsibility and accountability as well as opened the door to future opportunities. They were introduced to a wonderful new group of friends and made some friendships that will last a lifetime. Because of MY involvement in IJRA I learned that being a “Rodeo Mom” is a lot like being a cheerleader, but trading the skirt and pom-poms in for “full western attire plus a hat.”

I also learned the difference between the wad of ropes thrown in my hands on the way to the arena, and how to use my sock as a flag on a breakaway rope in a pinch when your son has forgotten his as he’s entering the arena…(priceless!)

Because of our involvement in the IHSRA, my kids were able to fulfill a lot of the opportunities presented to them at the IJRA level, including college and scholarships. We have traveled to the High School Rodeo Nationals in Springfield, Illinois, Farmington, New Mexico, and Gillette, Wyoming and met people from all over the US, Canada, and Australia. We have seen NFR cowboys and cowgirls take time out of their schedules to come watch and inspire high school kids on their way to rodeo stardom and fame.

We have seen the Great Divide, wild mustangs, and canyons and ravines you only see on postcards. We’ve taken the long way from Gillette to Sheridan Wyoming seeing the vast openness and beauty of the western countryside, got to visit the King Ropes Museum, and spent a day traveling up the Big Horn Mountain on a one lane dirt road that made my heart do a million flip flops and grandma cuss like a sailor!

(Just kidding, she did cuss a little. She was pretty scared!)

We’ve spent countless weekends camping with great friends and sat at numerous campfires celebrating birthdays and reminiscing about our own youthful yesteryears. I was fortunate to be at all but one Lexington Father-Son basketball showdowns (IHSRA exclusive) and blessed to see first time catches, record barrel/pole runs, and come-back bull rides that make you cry.

And if that same someone was to ask me what MY most memorable moment was from my 10 year involvement with the IJRA and IHSRA, I would have to ask them to grab a lawn chair and have a seat by my campfire. There are way too many to pick from! Whether good memory or bad memory I wouldn’t change a single moment of life spent in Rodeo.

I.H.S.R.A. Member SPOTLIGHT Deni Taylor

IHSRA is proud to introduce you to Deni Taylor from Branchville, Indiana. She is a two year member of the IHSRA, her parents are Dennis and Edna Taylor, and her horse’s name is “Pigin.”

Deni’s favorite events are Goat Tying and Barrel Racing, but one of her future goals is to add Breakaway Roping to her list of favorite events!

Upon graduating from high school, Deni would like to attend college for Radiology or to become a Vet Tech as well as compete in the NFR. Deni participates in the Indiana High School Rodeo because she loves rodeos and she gets to meet new people and make a lot of friends.

When asked what her most memorable rodeo moment to date was, she responded: “I was so nervous at the Lanesville Rodeo because it was the first time I had ever goat tied. I just knew that it was not going to be pretty, but it was a lot of fun and I ended up placing 4th!”

Cord Barricklow Please meet Cord Barricklow! He is from Lebanon, Indiana and is a Junior at Lebanon High School. His parents are Stormy and Rhonda Barricklow.

Coming from a rodeo family, Cord is no stranger to the rodeo world. He spent 9 years in the IJRA before moving up to the IHSRA where he has been an active member for 3 years.

Cords rodeo horse’s name is Ringo and as an interesting side note, Cords brother Strand (also an IHSRA member and Cords current team roping partner) rides Ringo’s full brother “Happy.” Cords favorite rodeo event is Calf Roping.

Upon graduating from high school, Cord would like to attend college on a 4 year rodeo scholarship and obtain a MBA (masters of business administration).

Cord likes participating in the IHSRA to gain experience in the rodeo world as well as see and meet all of our rodeo family. His most memorable rodeo moment was winning the 2010-2011 Team Roping State Championship with his partner Damon Lepley.

ere we are in February with only a few more months until our first IJRA rodeo! While April might seem like a way to go, it will be here before we know it.

So often in a new year, we say what we want and hope that it comes true in the months to come. Many of you may have told someone a goal or two that you hope to achieve in 2012, but did you mean it? Have you been working toward that goal, or just reminding yourself that it is something you would “like” to do? This month I encourage all of the IJRA members to write down your IJRA goal for the year, put it somewhere you see it several times a day, and work toward meeting that goal in 2012! Goals are a great way to work toward something you want, they give you purpose and a path in your life. Yogi Berra gave a great quote when he said, “If you don’t know where you are going, you’ll end up someplace else.”

To have a good goal you must think SMART -Specific, Measurable, Achievable, ResultsOriented and Time-limited. Here are a few tips that will help you get started: 1. Your goal should be something that you want for yourself. Think about what you would like to happen and then write it down.

You have to write down exactly what you want. Help yourself start out by saying “I want to….”

2. Have a deadline. Instead of making a goal

3. Goals should be realistic and possible. Take a look at where you are and what you have to work with. Don’t make your goal bigger than what you can achieve in a certain amount of time.

4. Make sure your goal says HOW you are going to achieve it. Make a plan and follow it to your destination. This part includes a way to measure your success. (“I will rope the dummy 6 days a week for 10 minutes each time.” instead of “I will rope the dummy.”)

5. Write it down. Studies have shown written goals are much more successful than unwritten goals. Even better is to share your goals with friends or family. Sharing your goals increases your success rate even more!

when you will reach this goal - (Finals, a certain day, a certain rodeo.) The last step is to write down exactly what you are going to do to reach this goal. These are often called objectives and are just the steps you will take to make your goal. You may want to start at the end and work backwards to your start point.

Sometimes it is helpful for someone else to read your plan and help you think of anything you may have missed.

I asked some of the IJRA members what their goals for the remainder of this season were and here is what they had to say.

Hunter Verhey – “My goal is to get a full ride on my calf for the first time!”

Lois Thomas – My goals for the 2012 rodeo season are to do my best by being consistent, having fun and get to know more IJRA members.

Webster Thomas – My goals are to go to the State Finals and do the best that I can.

“If you set a goal for yourself and you are able to achieve it, you have won your race. Your goal can be to come in first, to improve your performance, or just finish the race. The stock contractors (Mike and Angie Miller) for bringing the stock and helping him behind the chutes. The announcer, Jack Overshiner, for doing a great job and playing good music during the bull riding and everyone else who helps at the rodeos to make it all possible.

his month’s spotlight shines on the Crismore family. Meet Greg, Darla, Emily and Caleb and hear what they have to say about being part of IJRA.

We are from Gosport, Indiana and have 2 children Caleb who is 9, and Emily who is 12. We have been part of IJRA for three years.

Greg was involved in junior rodeo when he was a kid so we looked it up online and found the information we needed to get started. When we are not at a rodeo, we spend our time trail riding, fishing, or going to open shows for the kids to get some practice. Sometimes we just spend the day outside roping the dummy (or mom and dad if your Caleb).

Emily competes in barrel racing. Her goals are to become more comfortable and better at barrel racing and to start goat tying. She would like to win a buckle and maybe become all around cowgirl someday.

Her favorite part of the rodeo is getting to ride her horse and spend time with her friends. She would like to thank Brittany Molden for all she does to help the girls with barrels and goats and everyone else who helps with the rodeo to make it all possible.

IJRA is very important to our family. It’s not just about going and competing in a rodeo, it’s about being with the rodeo family and doing everything possible to help someone else to be their best. It teaches responsibility, respect, and sportsmanship. We love our Rodeo family and would not change our lives for anything in the world.

Caleb competes in 3-4-5 calf riding and chute dogging. His goals are to become a better bull rider, become a state champion and win more buckles, and eventually maybe even become the all around cowboy.

His favorite part of the rodeo is getting to spend time with his rodeo buddies and riding bulls. His role model is Lane Frost. He watches

Forgiveness

from the west? That’s how far he removes our sins from us. Even though we deserve his wrath. Scripture tells us this.

Psalm 103:8-12 The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy.

He will not always chide: neither will he keep his anger for ever.

He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.

For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him.

As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.

Forgiveness, like the country song says, “it’s such a simple word.” It’s easy to throw it around when you’re on the end that needs forgiving. But not so easy when you’re the one who has been “wronged.” We’d rather hold a grudge, or at least keep dibs on being able to bring up the past in what might seem to be an opportune moment for a “look what so and so did to me pity party.”

The following parable in Matthew tells of a servant who begs his king to be forgive him of a debt that he owes and the king does just that.

As soon as the servant is forgiven of his debt, he goes out and has another thrown in prison for a debt owed to him.

We may say....”I can forgive, but I’ll never forget.” But, is that really forgiving? I don’t think we (me included) do a very good job at grasping God’s definition of forgiveness.

Put yourself in the following situation and ask yourself what you would do......pretend to be the master....then put yourself in the servant’s position. (And even the fellowservant’s.)

I found a great passage in Matthew that we have all probably heard before.

Matthew 18:23-35 Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, which would take account of his servants.

And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, which owed him ten thousand talents.

But forasmuch as he had not to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made.

The servant therefore fell down, and worshipped him, saying, Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.

Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and forgave him the debt.

But the same servant went out, and found one of his fellowservants, which owed him an hundred pence: and he laid hands on him, and took him by the throat, saying, Pay me that thou owest.

And his fellowservant fell down at his feet, and besought him, saying, Have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.

And he would not: but went and cast him into prison, till he should pay the debt.

Matthew 18:21-22 Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times?

Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.

Yeah, Yeah....We’ve heard that before. seventy times seven is 490. We should forgive our brother who sins against us 490 times. OK, so what about it?

Stop and think about it. Really think about it. Could you forgive someone who did you wrong once? twice? three times? Most of us would say, “Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.” Am I right?

I’ve said those word myself and been ready to “be done” with someone who kept hurting me over and over again.

What Jesus is saying here is don’t take the time to count....just forgive. Forgive like He’s forgiven us. Remember....as far as the east is

The kicker here comes after the king hear’s of the servant’s unforgiving heart. Read on.....

So when his fellowservants saw what was done, they were very sorry, and came and told unto their lord all that was done.

Then his lord, after that he had called him, said unto him, O thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thou desiredst me: Shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellowservant, even as I had pity on thee?

And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him.

So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.

God is represented by the Master, we are the first servant. We have been forgiven of so much more than we could ever own up to.... way more than we deserve to be forgiven of.... and yet, he forgives us. He does, however, expect us to show the same mercy on those who need our forgiving. How can God forgive us if we are so hard hearted as to not let go of feelings that divide friendships and families?

My daughter told me today that she knew how much Jesus loves her....she said it was even more than I love her. I told her that was very true, he does love her more than I do. (I cannot imagine how....but I know he does.)

She then informed me that Jesus died for her.

“Yes,” I said....”he did.” I also told her that I would die for her.

Then I asked her if she thought I would die for the mean man down the road if he spit on me and called me names. She kind of tilted her head and said, “no,” with a look of question in her eyes. I told her, “Jesus did.”

Jesus died for those who spit on him, those who called him names, those who hung him on a cross. He forgave them.

Gifts are something someone gives to you and for the gift to be yours, you have to accept it. All we have to do is accept that wonderful gift. I know I have…won’t you?

But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many.

Lucky Scott of Portland, Indiana knew that our mystery rider was Deane Lehman of Decatur, Indiana. Deane is shown competing in a flag race at St. Marys, Ohio in the early 1980s. The horse is is shown riding was called Junior.

Deane has been more involved in in Quarter Horse Racing than flag racing recently and has been very successful. He and his wife, Jane, own Havanna Gold - Indiana Downs’ Champion Aged Horse.
