LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Happy New Year!!! I hope this New Year finds all of our readers happy and healthy. Hopefully your Christmas season was full of blessings and family. Now on to that time of year when everyone is making resolutions....what will yours be? Or do you intend to make any? Whether you decide to try to quit smoking, lose weight, work out....ride everyday....whatever it is....I wish you good luck. As for myself, I never have been one to make New Year’s resolutions, so I’ll give you some ideas for “horsey” resolutions and I’ll cheer for you. This past month was a sad one and exciting one for the horse world. From the unexpected death of First Down Dash to Sherri Cervi and Jill Moody’s record breaking NFR performances....it was definitely a month with lots of “horsey” topics to discuss with your friends. (Resolution idea-talk horse with a friend at least once a week-I even like this one!)

This month we are featuring some of the nicest stallions in the country throughout our Annual Stallion Edition. Browse through and find a nice match for your broodmares. All of our subscribers should have also received our Annual Stallion Calendar as a gift from The Horse Resource. If you have not, visit our website to request yours. (Resolution idea-visit www.thehorseresource.net at least once a day - sorry, I couldn’t resist.) We would like to welcome the 1st Ohio CMSA (Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association) members to our list of readers and subscribers. Watch for their news to see what is happening in the mounted shooting world. If you haven’t tried the mounted shooting - you have to add that to your list of resolutions. (Resolution idea-try Cowboy Mounted Shooting this year- you won’t regret this one!) And finally, I hope you all enjoy this month’s new features. We like hearing from you and what you enjoy reading, so email us with your input. Until next month..... Make a resolution to count your blessings daily - on horseback!! God Bless and ride safe, Christa Conway

Settin’ It Straight

A correction to the information on page 1 of December 2010’s issue of The Horse Resource involves the QHRAI SSA Derby information. The winner of the SSA Derby was actually Beduino Rich (Sired by Like A Beduino), ridden by jockey Joe Ruiz, owned by Jeremy and Naia Giambi of Arizona trained by Raul Hernandez.

Family Album-Send in Your Pictures! We are still looking to create a “Family Album” of the Barrel Horse World folks. If you visit Barrel Horse World and would like to be included in the “Family Album,” send us a picture of yourself and your screen name. Send picture and name to thehorseresource@msn.com

Horseshoe H NT December’s Horseshoe Hunt winner is Connie Stivers of Kentucky. Connie chose to extend her subscription for a year as her prize. Congrats! Michelle Sarber, Ruth Correll, Kensie Jarrell and Melinda Hattery also found our horsehoe. The horseshoe was on page 21 in the King Veterinary advertisement. Don’t forget, winner’s receive their choice of a FREE “Horsey-T,” “HorseyHat” or a year’s subscription. This month’s horseshoe hunt winner will be the first one to contact us with the location of the Horseshoe in this issue. Call or email when you find it and we’ll mention your name in our January 2011 issue and send you a prize if you are the first to contact us! “Happy horseshoe hunting!” (Find the horseshoe to the left somewhere in this issue and email or call us with it’s location! thehorseresource@msn.com)

News Produced by Horsemen’s Council of Illinois (HCI) and sponsored by Purina Mills, Midway Trailer Sales and Illinois Farm Bureau, the allbreed expo annually attracts more than 10,000 horse owners. In addition to learning training techniques from experts, Horse Fair gives attendees access to unique HorsesForSale aisles, breed and sport demonstrations, Stallion Row and Parade and the All-Youth Horse Judging Trials. Horse Fair opens on Friday with a reduced $5 admission charge. Saturday or Sunday Horse Fair tickets are $12 adult and $6 child/senior; weekend passes are $20 adult and $10 child/senior. General admission tickets for the Extreme Cowboy Race Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. require a separate ticket: $9 adult, $6 child/senior. Advance tickets may be purchased online with a credit card at www.HorsemensCouncil.org or by calling the Council office at (217) 529-6503. Horse Fair hours are 1 – 7 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Craig Cameron’s Extreme Cowboy Race Comes to 2011 Illinois Horse Fair March 4-6 Springfield, IL – New at the 2011 Illinois Horse Fair March 4-6 at the

State Fairgrounds will be the challenging excitement of Craig Cameron’s “Extreme Cowboy Race” Friday and Saturday nights in the Coliseum. The race is a multifaceted equestrian sport that requires contestants and their horses to demonstrate both speed and horsemanship.

As seen on RFD-TV, contestants run a course of 13 obstacles (such as pistol/rifle shooting, jumping, double bareback, deadfall, water carry, flames and smoke, log pull, roping, teeter-totter bridge, etc.) and are judged on their approach to, negotiation of and departure from obstacles, being scored separately on time and horsemanship.

Volunteers are needed for a variety of responsibilities, ranging from manning information booths to hospitality. You can volunteer for a few hours a day or for a whole weekend. To volunteer, contact Cheryl DeMent by email at paintfilly71@yahoo.com. For information on exhibiting contact Joy Meierhans, Horse Fair Manager, (630) 557-2575 or JM@TheMeierhans.com. Illinois Horse Fair is produced by Horsemen’s Council of Illinois, voice of the horse industry in Illinois. It is affiliated with the American Horse Council and is the statewide association of equine organizations and individuals working to provide central leadership and advocacy for Illinois’ horses and horse owners, and its multi-billion-dollar industry.

In addition to being the lead clinician at the 22nd Annual Illinois Horse Fair, Craig Cameron, 2010 Road to the Horse Colt-Starting World Champion, will host and emcee the Extreme Cowboy Race. The race is sanctioned by the Extreme Cowboy Association, and members points will be awarded, although membership is not required to compete. Race participants will compete for $2,000 in cash. Open to riders age 18 and over (male or female), the entry fee is $150, which includes one horse stall with first bedding and two weekend passes to Horse Fair. Entrants must submit an entry form and a five-minute performance DVD or video for Cameron’s evaluation. Up to 25 of his selected entrants will compete in Friday’s preliminary round with the 10 top riders advancing to Saturday’s finals. Entry forms and more information are available at www.HorsemensCouncil.org/HorseFair or by calling Horsemen’s Council of Illinois at (217) 529-6503 for an application. Cameron of Bluff Dale, TX was crowned the 2010 World Champion of Colt-Starting last March in Murfreesboro, TN. Known as the original cowboy clinician, he competed for the coveted title in a display of supreme horsemanship, which gives three top clinicians little more than three hours over two days to gentle three unbroken colts using their own styles of natural horsemanship. At Illinois Horse Fair, Cameron and other top national clinicians and equine educators will join 140 vendors offering all things for the equestrian – from recreational horsemen to professionals.

Jeannine Berger, DVM, of Sacramento, CA, the only board-certified veterinary behaviorist specializing in horses in the United States, captivates audience with her presentation at the 2010 Equestriann Lifestyle Expo

Chicagoland Equestrian Lifestyle Expo Delivers on “best education” promise The 2010 Chicagoland Equestrian Lifestyle Expo is being called a continuing success for providing attractive and diverse educational topics and shopping opportunities, according to Joy Meierhans, manager. In its third year, Equestrian Lifestyle Expo, a project of the Horsemen’s Council of Illinois, sponsored by Purina Feeds, returned to the Lake County Fairground’s 65,000-square-foot Expo Center in Grayslake, IL. Expo is held the weekend before Thanksgiving each year, offering a festive Holiday Market component. The 2010 event provided 56 educational presentations and shopping at close to 100 vendors. Speakers

News presented multi-discipline topics and vendors offered “all things equestrian” for both English and Western tack and togs, as well as jewelry, art, books, DVDs and other gifts.

All Time Leading Stallion, First Down Dash Passes In His Sleep

“Comments heard most often from attendees were to the effect that ‘we weren’t able to attend all of the presentations,’ which we regard as a compliment,” said Frank Bowman, HCI president. Meierhans suggests coming with a friend, attending different sessions and comparing notes.

Keynoters included three-time Olympic coach Jane Savoie of Wellington, FL; Jeannine Berger, DVM, of Sacramento, CA, the only boardcertified veterinary behaviorist specializing in horses in the United States; Richard Shrake of Sun River, OR, master educator, trainer and world-class horse show judge; and Randel Raub, PhD, head of equine research at Purina Mills’ 1,100-acre 75-horse research farm. New on the education lineup was a well-received professional track for facility managers and such special opportunities as learning how to analyze a fecal sample for parasites, or the challenge of assembling all 100 bones of a horse skeleton, hosted by Southern Illinois University’s Equine Science Program. Enlivening the experience from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Expo added wineand-cheese service, music, prizes for a treasure hunt and a silent auction, which raised $1,700 in support of HCI’s annual scholarship program for students on a path to equine careers. Exhibitor Michael Liang of Trailer Eyes (a horse trailer video monitoring system) said “Expo is getting better each year,” observing that while overall attendance may not equal the mega shows, “Expo attracts the true buyers.” “Jane Savoie speaks as both a presenter and a vendor when she reports that ‘We were never not busy,’” Meierhans said.

Its unique roundtable format (think speed dating with experts) often had standing room only around its speakers seated at 10 different tables for eight. The format gives listeners an “up close and personal” contact with Expo’s key speakers whose larger-room seminar presentations attract hundreds of knowledge-seeking attendees over two days.

Thanksgiving Day in Bonsall, CA will be remembered as the day First Down Dash took his last breath. Vessels Stallion Farm was home to of one of the AQHA’s most prolific and influential stallions. First Down Dash was 26 at the time of his passing. According to Bonnie Vessels, the stallion laid down and went to sleep peacefully. She said he was missing “Scoop” (her late husband, Frank Vessels) and his sunflower seeds. First Down Dash was laid to rest with a set of Vessels Stallion Farms silks and plenty of sunflower seeds. His resting place had been chosen by “Scoop” some time ago according to the Vessels Stallion website. Many consider First Down Dash the most influential stallion of all time. Dr. Ed Allred, the sport’s all-time leading breeder, released the following statement: “First Down Dash is unquestionably the greatest stallion of all time. No horse has had the influence of the great First Down Dash. He was an amazing horse. He was a sire of sires. What an incredible and great career...he was in one word ‘amazing.’”

Expo gives speaker evaluation forms to attendees at every presentation, asking for feedback. “On a scale of 1 to 6 with 6 being the best, Savoie consistently received 6s and quite a few 10s!” Meierhans said. Savoie also partnered with EQ Equisense Systems in demonstrating the company’s revolutionary new training system at their Expo booth.

First Down Dash was bred by A.F. Stanley Jr. and B.F. Phillips Jr. He was by the the legendary sire Dash for Cash and out of First Prize Rose who was sired by Gallant Jet. First Down Dash carried on Dash for Cash’s legacy by surpassing many of the all-time records set by his sire.

Expo will activate a place on its web site (www.HorsemensCouncil.org/ Expo) where horse owners are encouraged to submit ideas for speakers and programming for the 2011 Equestrian Lifestyle Expo and where they will find contact information for 2010 Expo exhibitors.

First Down Dash was successful on the racetrack before his days as a sire began. He earned $857,256 by winning 13 of 15 career starts. He was named 1987’s AQHA world champion, champion 3-year-old and champion 3-year-old colt.

His progeny earnings stand at more than $73.7 million, easily the highest total of all-time. The second place spot belongs to his sire, Dash for Cash, with over 35 million seperating the two. First Down Dash has sired 1,163 winners, which includes 224 stakes winners, a record six All American Futurity (G1) winners (Royal Quick Dash, Dash Thru Traffic, A Classic Dash, Corona Cash, Falling In Loveagain and No Secrets Here) and a record six Champion of Champions (G1) winners (Wave Carver, Ocean Runaway, Cash For Kas, The Down Side, A Ransom and Dashing Folly.) First Down Dash’s name is also showing up on the bottom side of many winners’ pedigrees and moving him up the list of leading broodmare sires.

Fortunes Found By Tanya Randall Special for Future Fortunes Pictures Provided by Kenneth Springer

Future Fortunes wraps up milestone year with $98,500 awarded at the BFA’s World Futurity Future Fortunes, Inc., capped off its million-dollar payoff milestone by awarding $98,500 at the Barrel Futurities of America’s World Championship Barrel Racing Futurity, held Dec. 8-11 in Oklahoma City, Okla.

ture Fortunes program as a weanling. Ridden by Michelle McLeod, Whitesboro, Texas, BB took top honors in the Future Fortunes Bonus Money at the BFA World Futurity.

To be eligible for $51,000 of this lucrative purse, owners needed to simply show up with a Future Fortunes horse, a copy of their registration papers and note their eligibility on the entry form. Once a horse is paid in full to the program, for a modest $150 if paid in full as a weanling, they’re eligible for the futurity and open bonus money for life!

The 4-year-old daughter of Carols Last Wager, by Bared From Wagering out of Carols Girl, by Rare Jet, carried A Streak Of Fling out of a Danette Potter, Cecil, Ohio, to the Future Fortunes Owner/Breeder/Rider ChampiNonstop Jet granddaughter onship at the Barrel Futurities of America’s World Championship Futurity. Bred by Adalena Moon Jet, by The Curt and Danette Potter, Carols Last Wager also won top Future Fortunes BroodReign Master, an NFR calf mare honors for her dam Carols Girl with an amazing $9,650 won in the program during the year. horse, earned $8,640 with $7,776 going to Dufurrena BB’s efforts earned Dufurrena five years ago, can’t say enough as the owner and breeder and and McLeod a jacket, horse sheet good things about BB. $864 going to Brian and Lisa and saddle pad. Only horses entered in the $47,500 Fortunes Round paid an entry fee.

“She ran great,” said McLeod, who just started riding the mare this fall. “She ran three 15.5s. I’m so proud of her for being so consistent. It was neat to win the Future Fortunes. Those awards are really nice. It’s a really great program.”

Future Fortunes BFA Champion

“It’s the best $150 I’ve ever spent,” said Shona Dufurrena of the money she spent paying Blue Moon Fling (“BB”) into the Fu-

out on the Future Fortunes bonus because they had considered scratching from the second go since BB had made the futurity finals on her first run. McLeod was convinced that BB would get faster on their second run, so she wanted to run her again to better their two-run average potential. After Dufurrena looked at the Future Fortunes rules online, she was glad McLeod decided to run her again. Dufurrena, who makes her living in the cutting horse industry—her husband Ed trains cutters, grew up barrel racing and started BB with the help of her husband and daughter Rieta, 17. But, the demands of the cutting training business kept her from running BB herself. “The best thing was finding a good jockey,” said the Gainesville, Texas, resident. “I’m super happy with Michelle. I can’t say enough good things about her.”

Blue Moon Fling, ridden by Michelle McLeod for Shona Duferrena, Gainesville, Texas, captured the Future Fortunes BFA Championship and earned $8,640. Blue Moon Fling is a daughter of A Streak Of Fling out of Adalena Moon Jet, by The Reign Maker.

really broke. All I had to do was try to keep her happy. I’m lucky to have been on her.” Fortunes Round Champion Missjbrunningwithfire (“Honey”), owned by Joe and Dee Lynn Braman, Refugio, Texas, and ridden by Kassie Mowry, collected the $25,000 first-place check in the $47,500 Fortunes Round. The 4-year-old mare, which will be sporting a new Future Fortunes trophy sheet, is by Fire Water Flit out of KK Runner, by Shawne Bug. Vickie Adams, owner of Future Fortunes Legend sire Fire Water Flit, will also receive a check worth $2,500. The Fortunes Round championship is determined by the best of two runs from the BFA’s qualifying rounds. Only 50 slot holders were able to nominate horses for the Fortunes Round and their horses had to be nominated in fall of their 3-year-old year. Bred by Robert and Cristal Sherill, Honey started her training with Mowry at the start of her 3-year-old year. She didn’t see

futurity action until the spring of her futurity year due to her late start.

there is a Future Fortunes bonus we always seem to get a little money.

“She’s really just turned it on here lately,” said Dee Lynn Braman. “She’s always had bad luck before, like someone would set a barrel up to knock her out of a final. Kassie’s done a great job with her. She’s worked through a lot of things with her and switched her to the left. Honey’s just one of those late bloomers that Kassie wouldn’t give up on when I was ready to bring her home.”

“We really do always try to buy Future Fortunes horses. We were interested in two horses in the sale (at Oklahoma City), but they weren’t Future Fortunes. One could have been, but it hadn’t been nominated and had to be paid in for $1,500. So, we passed. We really want to thank the stallion owners and breeders that take the time and spend the money to make their horses Future Fortunes eligible.”

Braman said she plans to let Mowry derby the mare next year as well as introduce her to some rodeos.

Vogel is already set for next year’s Future Fortunes purses. She has her futurity colt for next year paid into the lucrative Fortunes Round at the 2011 BFA World, and she’ll look to pick up open bonus money at various events around the country with her older Future Fortunes horses.

JB Quarters Horses Amateur Champion Terry Vogel claimed the JB Quarter Horses trophy saddle for the leading amateur rider in the futurity with Fiery Contender. Vogel, a human resources, information technology and marketing director for Lake Texas Jet Center, also earned a $1,500 bonus as well as a jacket and halter. Bred by Vickie Adams, Fiery Contender is a 4-year-old mare by Title Contender out of Fiery Tequila by Fire Water Flit. “She’s big, pretty and really fast,” said Vogel, who hangs her hat in Gainesville, Texas. Vogel said she and her husband Lee, an equine dentist, really make a point to purchase Future Fortunes horses. “Everything we own is Future Fortunes,” she said. “It’s a really good program. Any time

Elite Trailers Rookie Champion Kelly Ficklin, a speech therapist from Onarga, Ill., was the highest-placing, first-time competitor at the BFA World. She captured the Rookie Championship aboard Wayne Ruel’s 4-year-old gelding DHR Whatta Money Man (“Dinero”). Bred by Delvin and Sheryl Buhr, Dinero is by their stallion Oh Whatta Boy out of Me And Red Money, by Future Fortunes Legend sire On The Money Red. Ruel, a corn and bean farmer from Kawkakee, Ill., purchased the gelding as a 2-year-old at the 2008 BFA Select Sale for $8,500, and sent him to Ficklin’s father Russ to train. “Her dad’s an excellent trainer,” said Ruel. “I’ve had horses with them for about five years. Funny thing is, when I bought this horse, I liked him, but Russ, her momma and Kelly really didn’t care for him.” The younger Ficklin started riding Dinero last fall. The duo placed at two smaller futurities during the year and finished second in the Sho Me Slot Futurity, but they were truly a force to be reckoned with at the larger three-day jackpots around the Midwest.

“I knew he would do well if he made his typical runs,” said Ficklin. Dinero made the BFA Futurity Finals and finished third in the DHR Whatta Money Man carried Kelly Ficklin to the Future Fortunes Future Fortunes Bonus Rookie Championship at the BFA World Futurity. The first time BFA com- Money with $5,373 in petitor rode the Oh Whatta Boy-On The Money Red gelding for Wayne earnings. Of that total, Ruel of Kawkakee, Ill.

Page 27

Ruel collected $3,591 and the Buhrs received $594 on behalf of Oh Whatta Boy and $1,188 as the breeders of Dinero. “I really proud of her,” said Ruel of his jockey. “She did really well. Kelly’s a good rider.” Although speech therapy has been her chosen profession for the past nine years, Ficklin grew up barrel racing and has occasionally jockeyed horses for her dad in the past. Her mother, Janet, is former Great Lakes Circuit Finals qualifier in the WPRA and her aunt, Judy Arnold, is a former National Finals Rodeo qualifier. For the Rookie Championship, Ficklin received a $1,000 bonus, a buckle, a jacket and a halter. Owner/Breeder/Rider Champion & Champion Broodmare Curt and Danette Potter’s late, great mare Carols Girl was named leading broodmare, thanks to the efforts of her last foal, Carols Last Wager, who collected an amazing $9,650 in Future Fortunes Bonus Money throughout 2010. The Potters, Cecil, Ohio, received a crystal bowl in honor of their mare and a horse sheet and halter for being the owner/breeder/rider champion at the BFA World Futurity. Carols Girl, a daughter of Rare Jet out of Sleet And Snow, by Texas Dancer, was a multiple futurity finalist, including a reserve championship at the Ardmore Futurity, Congress Sweepstakes finalist, as well as a rodeo winner in the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association and International Professional Rodeo Association. She qualified Danette Potter for the International Finals Rodeo and won money at that prestigious event. The Potters lost the great mare shortly after Carols Last Wager (“Lexus”) was born. “She’s always been very special,” said Curt Potter of Lexus, a 4-year-old mare. “Her momma died when she was eight weeks old. She’s always been a spoiled brat. We got a miniature pony to keep her company and that pony stayed with her until she was a 3-yearold. When we took her away from the pony, it was like weaning her from her mother!” By the Potters’ late stallion, Barred From Wagering, Carols Last Wager topped the Future Fortunes bonus at the Southern Rebel Futurity and earned additional bonuses at the Lance Graves Pro Classic, Old Fort Days Futurity and BFA World. The Potters have had a rough year in 2010. During the Old Fort Days Futurity, their nephew, “who was like their kid,” was killed in a farming accident, and later on November 11, Curt had a heart attack.

Lexus has been one of the bright spots during the year. Despite some soundness issues, the gritty mare was a solid check-earner throughout the season. Champion Breeder Charles and Nita Brock, Talhihina, Okla., were the leading breeders, thanks to the two Future Fortunes money earners bred in their names, Danita Design and VF Cat Daddy. The two horses, full siblings thanks to embryo transfer, earned $9,413 in bonus money with the Brocks’ breeders’ share being $1,883. Both horses are by Designer Red and out of Bandits Best Gal, by Flit Bar Bandit. Danita Design, a mare who ran for the Brocks, earned $8,113. VF Cat Daddy, a gelding born to a recipient mare, earned $1,300 for Curt and Danette Potter, Cecil, Ohio. VF Cat Daddy was a foal share with Danny Ray of Victory Farms, who owned Designer Red. Bandits Best Gal (“Besty”) was a former futurity horse for the Brocks, who received a crystal bowl for their mare’s achievement. Charles Brock described the mare as “a holy terror” and “the fastest thing” he had ever ridden. An injury put her in the broodmare band. She’s currently in foal to Stratospheric. “Nita and I were at a futurity in Phoenix, Ariz.,

when she says, ‘We needed to make a pit stop to pick up the black mare I bought,’” laughed Charles Brock, who serves as BFA President. “She had bought the mare behind my back. She’s a full sister to Barbie Sue Flit, and Nita always like that mare. So, she bought Besty from Sissy Novak.”

mans Guy’s leading Future Fortunes earner with $6,159 in total bonus money from the Beth Cooper Memorial, Old Fort Days and Fizz Bomb futurities. Owned and ridden by Hallie Melvin, Frenchies Cash Cutie was bred by Don Schnoor. Melvin collected $4,311 and Schnoor’s breeder’s share was $1,232.

Danita Design was campaigned by Kay Young for the Brocks. She took the top spot in the Future Fortunes Bonus Money at the Old Fort Days Futurity.

Other money earners for Frenchmans Guy include Guys Bigtime Streker ($5,195 in total bonus money), Doittoem Lil Martha ($3,430), PT Frenchman ($2,365), Frenchmans Signature ($2,000), Blue Bourbon Belle ($960) and Guys Gold Coin ($768).

“Kay has done an excellent job with her,” added Brock. With two grand barrel racers, Peyton and Parker Glenn, to keep mounted, Danita will likely become part of their string of horses. Champion Sire Perennial leading barrel horse sire Frenchmans Guy, owned by Bill and Deb Myers of St. Onge, S.D., was the leading Future Fortunes sire in 2010 with seven get amassing $20,877 in total bonus earnings. Frenchmans Guy’s share of that total was nearly $2,100. The Myers were awarded a silver halter for Frenchmans Guy’s achievement. Frenchies Cash Cutie, a 4-year-old out of Haulin Lotsacash, by Holland Ease, was French-

Did I say Burrrrr...............?

I’m thinking that I mentioned the chill factor last month....but being the persistent breed that Jack Russells are known to be.....I will mention it again this month........ Burrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!” It has been unusually cold the last few days here at the ranch and this morning when I went out for my morning business, they forgot me!! (Well, not completely, but five minutes is a long time when it is 5 degrees!) I am quick to get the “job” done when it is cold outside. Probably because I don’t ask to go out until I just absolutely cannot hold it any longer. Then it is , wham, bam, thank you ma’am......now let me back in!! This morning, I’m not sure, but I think my “lady” got distracted with trying to get Princess Annabelle out of bed and that’s what took her so long to come back to the door and let me in. Waking “Your Highness” seems to be quite a chore lately, probably due to the cold winter days.

Standing at Stud

I did get one great Christmas present this year. Santa brought me a new doggie bed to replace the one that the Princess destroyed last year. We’ll see how long this one lasts. I am sure Annabelle was on the naughty list, but she still got a present....I think it was a “ringer” from the one lady that is craaaazy about that little black bark box...I’m sure it wasn’t from Santa Claus. If there is anything I do like about being outside when it is cold, it is when we get lots of the fluffy white stuff that the people call snow. I’ll admit that it is fun to play in the snow with the outside dogs - the running around keeps me warm - and the snow seems to make jumping and running a little more entertaining. Although, if it is too deep I have to do more hopping than running to get around. I do not think that Princess Annabelle likes to go out in the snow. Possibly because her unproportionately short legs put her belly awfully close to the cold wet white stuff. Her tracks - or should I say “track” - is one long wide trail through the snow, there are no footprints.....use your imagination here. Until next month....

Cowboy Mounted Shooting

Raw Horsepower - Hard Ridin’ - Straight Shootin’ 1st Ohio Cowboy Mounted Shooters 1st Ohio Cowboy Mounted Shooters are proud to announce that we are taking advantage of the great deal offered and have joined the “Horse Resource” to spread the word about our Ohio club and Cowboy Mounted Shooting. Each month we will be sharing news about club shoots, clinics, demos and activities involving Cowboy Mounted Shooting.

Cowboy Mounted Shooting is a class based competition, therefore a rider competes against his/her own class level. There are 6 class levels of Cowboys & Cowgirls and 6 levels of Senior Cowboys & Cowgirls. Each class has Cowboys and Cowgirls competing separately, from the raw beginner, level 1 right up to level 6. CMSA also includes Wranglers (under 12 years) that compete for Club, State, World and National titles, however Wranglers do not shoot from horseback. We use 2 single action revolvers of .45 Colt caliber, just like the Cowboys of the old west. These include Colt single action Army or Bisley Models, their reproductions Ruger Vaquero, Bisleys, Montados and Runnin Irons. We use specially loaded blank ammunition to break balloons on a timed course, 4 courses per match, plus we have a variety of 60 different courses. The fastest time, including any penalties, WINS! I would like to introduce you to our officers and directors, President Russ Imler (level 4) of Franklin, Ohio. Russ has been in Law Enforcement for 22 years. He has owned horses for several years riding trails and participating in cattle roundups out west. Our Vice President, Greg Couch (Sr.level 4) from Hamilton, Ohio, a retired Fireman/ Paramedic. Greg just started riding a few years ago after he saw a mounted shooting demo, he thought it looked like fun and was determined to try it. Greg won his senior level 3 class at the World finals in 2010! Treasurer Wayne Cole (level 5) from Hamilton, Ohio is an Electrician, working in the tri-state area. Wayne has been mounted shooting for approximately 9 years. He rides a quarter horse now but started out riding and shooting on a mule. His alias is “Mule Skinner”. Tom Miller (Sr. level 4) is a director, he was here from the get-go! One of the founding members of 1st Ohio, Tom and his wife Linda share their love for horses and the fun of the competition in Cowboy Mounted Shooting. Tom is retired from the telephone company and also enjoys riding his Harley with the Christian Motor Cycle Club when not competing in CMSA events. Rick Sage (Sr. level 2) retired from Hamilton County, is currently involved in buying, selling and collecting antiques. Rick and wife

Cowpoke Kendra’s s HOT in Western Trends ’ What In this month’s article I thought I would write about a friend of mine that has a history of high school rodeos and how to be a true cowgirl! This young lady is someone I’ve known for a long time. Her name is Becky Kingen. Becky comes from a big farm just northwest of Greenfield IN.

Becky studied Equine Management at NE Oklahoma. Becky is married to a man that loved her so much he took her last name when they got married. They have 2 kids Monte and Reata. Monte is involved in Junior rodeo and soon Reata will be as well.

Happy new year! I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and a safe New Years! Well it is now the first of the year and everyone is getting ready to start rodeoing …and maybe still going to some horseshows. It has been very cold out and you really have to bundle up to stay warm. If anyone is like me, I am not a big fan of the cold.

Kendra Gilbreath grew up showing cattle and sheep and eventually made her way into the rodeo arena as a barrel racer. She is married to her husband, Steve, and they have one son, Kolton. Kendra has worked in the Western Retail Business for most of her adult life and enjoys keeping with the hottest styles in western wear. She is currently a Manager and a Buyer for Cowpokes Work and Western Store in Anderson, IN and helps in keeping the hottest trends and styles in clothing, boots and western wear on the store showroom floor.

Page 35

They have lived in several states and worked on ranches, watching the crews do the branding on cows and it is something Becky has always dreamed of doing. She takes as many pictures to show the lifestyle they live now.

Becky has started a business called the Flying K Custom Cowboying LLC. She started making wild rags and chinks for her family. Then some buckaroos out west asked her to start making some for them and Pictures provided by Becky Kingen that is how the business got started. The wild rags come in various patterned material and a wide range of colors. She tries to make the “one of a kind” wild rags so no two people will have the same design. I’ve worn wild rags in the winter a lot because it helps to keep my neck warm. I have looked at Becky’s styles of wild rags and I have already bought some and plan to buy more. They are fashionable in more ways than one. Becky has sold wild rags to working cowboys and rodeo cowboys all over the US. They are all cut and sewn by Becky. You will know they are from her if you see a little black tag near a corner that has a blue flying k on it. You can find their business page on Facebook.

My Hero

By Barry Marcum

Pictures by Puhl’s Photography

(Stephanie Marcum)

I met her on New Years Eve 1990. I had gone to Michigan to pick up Debbie Elliott’s truck for her and when I dropped it off at her house, she was talking to Steph on the phone. Deb decided that Steph and I should meet. She called me and asked if I wanted to meet a friend of hers named Stephanie Taylor and go out on New Year’s Eve. I said that sounded okay but, I almost changed my mind. As it turned out, I went and we had a great time. About fifty days later I asked her to marry me and we were married in September of 1991. Steph has had horses since her dad convinced the family to move out to Avon (Indiana) from the city. You should hear her tell stories about their first barn her dad built out of leftovers from construction jobs and old standard station signs. It was at the bottom of the hill from the house and in the winter they had to slide water down to it on a sled.

it. That year she won the Senior Barrels at the Kentucky State Fair with him. In 2007, right after Congress she had her yearly mammogram and they found a lump. They called to tell us it was cancer just as we got to Oklahoma for the AQHA World Show that year. We both cried a little and then decided that we came here for her to try and win a championship and she did try, coming in at Reserve Champion in the Amateur Poles, just missing winning by two one thousands of a second.

‘That is why she is now and will always be my hero.’

When I first met her she was riding a horse named Exotic Jag, “Dub” for short. He got his nickname because he ran Double A on the track. She was also riding a horse named Jetido (Dewey) whom she later sold to Leah Roberts. The weekend after we got home from our honeymoon we went to Kentucky or Tennessee, I can’t remember now, to look at a horse that Richard Cotton had named Royal Guy Pogo (Guy). We got to the show and asked where Richard’s trailer was and someone pointed out an old stock trailer with what looked like a big pony tied to it. I looked at her and said, “Is that what we came to look at?” It was.

Then they threw a saddle on him and he grew about 4 inches. Chris Coffey took him out and blew everybody away. Steph rode Guy and Dub for a lot of years, taking both to Congress and the World Show several times. Dub was Reserve Champion Amateur Poles in 1998. During that time she also won several GBRA-I (Girls Barrel Racing Association of Indiana) saddles and buckles and is a six or seven time Girls All-Around Champion. She has ridden several other horses and colts over the years, including ones that have gone on with other people to run in high school rodeo, the GBRA-I, Open and Quarter Horse Shows. Steph’s dad, Noble Sr., who was a major force behind Steph and her riding, passed in 1995 from cancer and she lost her mom Dorothy in 2002. Steph’s parents were not just parents, but also her best friends, though sometimes you would be hard pressed to tell it the way she and her dad would argue. Those arguments really meant nothing because that was just the way they were with each other. In 2005 a friend of ours, Mary Freels, called Steph and told her that Dave Smith wanted to sell his horse Moonstruck Sue and she thought that Steph might like him. We brought him home to try him out for awhile and decide if she liked him. She thought about sending him home, but I talked her out of

Page 36

We came home and she started treatment which included chemo, radiation and surgery. In 2008 we were back at the Worlds again, which was one of her main goals after treatment. In 2009, the cancer was back again and with it more treatments. We went to the Worlds that year, but the best she could do was a ninth place finish in the Senior Poles. I told her I didn’t think that was too bad considering the fact that she took chemo on Monday and we left on Wednesday and she was showing on Friday. 2010 was a really good year for Steph and Sue, they did really good at Congress, running a couple 19’s and getting 3rd in the Amateur’s and 5th overall in the Pole Sweepstakes. They won the final go of the Pole Sweepstakes with a 19.8 and she told me it was her luck to finally win a class at the Congress and they didn’t give a trophy for it. This year at the World Show she did OK, but got sick while we were out there right before she had to run in the finals. I told Sue he would have to stay under her and help her through the poles, which he did, and they ended up finishing 5th place. We got home from Oklahoma and she continued to have some health issues. She ended up in the hospital on Thanksgiving Day. She came home for awhile but now she is back in the hospital. Unfortunately, the cancer has returned and as I sit here in her room writing this I know that she is once again in an uphill struggle. But I know that she will face it as she always has, with a strength of character and perseverance- the likes of which I have seldom seen. That is why she is now and will always be my hero.

“Come a Running Cunningham” H i Everyone: Hope your holidays were great and you can still button those jeans. haha.

I will be boarding a plane in a few short hours headed to Oaklahoma City for the Barrel Futuries of America. Joe took my colt out on Sunday. Since I am back in public school and really working on keeping those grades up I am going to miss only three days of school. (I’ll let you know how I did next month.) I can honestly say Florida in the winter has spoiled me and the saying "your blood thins when living in Florida" its TRUE.

Kayla and her pony, “Trapper”

This month my interview is with Kayla Cunningham, maybe you know her as the girl that has the amazing fast pony that we all have been beat by.. (well I have). Enjoy and keep warm... Clint

Me et -Miss Kayla Cunningham Whats your full name? Kayla Lynn Cunningham How old are you? 15 Whats your parents name? Angie and Rod Cunningham What is your siblings names? Jessie Cunningham Where do you live? Kempton, IN Is that fast turning beast of yours a horse or pony? He’s a pony. What can you tell me about it? Mare/ Gelding? How old? Color? Bad habits? Breeding? Trapper is a 12 year old sorrel with flaxen mane and tail. He is a grade gelding out of a good AQHA horse

named Rocket Trap. He has a great personality and thinks he is the boss. He loves cookies, so I make him special “Pony Power cookies, although he will eat about anything sweet. At some shows they have nicknamed him the Little Red Flyer.

What have you accomplished in your barrel racing and pole bending? 2008- Indiana State Fair Overall Barrel and Pole Bending Champion & GBRA All Around Champion 2009-ISF Overall barrel Champion & GBRA 1-D Barrel Champion , 3rd in NBHA State show 1-D Open finals 2010- GBRA 1-D Pole Champion & All around Champion & Reserve 1-D Barrel Champion How many horses do you have? I own Trapper, my pleasure/English horse, Bandit, and I sometimes ride my moms horse, Dan, and my sisters horse, Dealer, at shows. Do you have other pets? I have lots of animals, through the summer for 4-H I show goats, pigs, and sheep, and I also have two dogs and some barn cats.

Do you have a favorite horse show? If so why? No, I love all horse shows, especially when all my friends are there to show with me. What other hobbies do you have? I enjoy running cross country, track, deer hunting, showing in 4-H and drawing.

Do you have any advice to give to your fellow barrel racers? Always keep a positive attitude and you will succeed. As long as you go out there and do your best you are a winner.

Do you ride and show in the winter? I ride at home all the time in the winter but only go to a few shows.

What would you like to win? I have never won at the NBHA State show and that would be a neat thing to accomplish.

Who taught you to ride? My mom (Angie Cunningham) taught me everything I know about horses.

What do you plan to do after high school? I plan to become an equine dentist and farrier.

Freezing........ (in Indiana)

Clint is a 17 year old junior he is enrolled in Abeka Academy homeschool. His parents are Terrie VanVolkenburgh and respectively Joe Trentman. He has grown up in the horse world, both parents have rode almost all their life...Clint's grandfather as some of you may remember was the late Terry VanVolkenburgh, who would run up and down the fences when his daughters would run barrels. Clint began barrel racing at the age of 4 with a pony, then went on to particpate in Jr. Rodeo and his favorite event was the sheep riding, had to believe he is now a barrel racer. He has won the Ohio Youth NBHA and Indiana Youth and Open NBHA , he has also won the congress youth barrel four times, and was runner up in the Congress Sweepstakes, placed at Josey Jr. world numerous times, and won the NBHA Youth World 1d in 2006. He loves to barrel race and is now trying his hand at the futurities. In Clint's spare time he mows grass for a part time job and is also very active in his church where he and his cousins are bible school helpers. Clint also volunteers one day a week at a school in Cincinatti where he spends time tutoring other kids in reading.

Subject: AI or Live Cover?? Got some breeding questions! FlyinByU Posted 2010-11-30 11:56 AM Elite Veteran Posts: 884 Location: ~ on the back of a horse ~ I was thinking about breeding my mare next year and this is the first mare that I have ever had bred. (This will be a colt for me to keep). I’m not really sure how the whole AI process works or if AI or Live Cover is better. I know in AI you have to be pretty accessible to a vet - the problem is my husband and I work all day and we can’t keep taking off work to meet the vet, etc. Our jobs just won’t allow it. Can the mare go to the same place as the stud to get AI’d? Also, how do you know when to take your mare in? Any and all info would be appreciated - like what kind of cost we would be looking at - just in general - like mare care, etc and how this whole process works. =) rockinas Best of the Badlands Location: Central South Dakota Some breeding facilities will take outside mares in to be AIed. You would just have to check with the places that stand the stallions that you are interested in for your mare. If you are going to have the mare AIed by a vet it is really important to get a vet that does very well in the equine reproduction department. It can get very expensive if you get a vet that doesn’t know what they are doing, and your mare can get messed up very easily by someone that doesn’t know what they are doing. I personally do not like live cover because I think it is too dangerous for the mare, the stallion, and the handlers but that is JMO and I know myself, as a person that stands two stallions to the public, that we don’t even offer that option here. But I know many people that do, and they get by, and it works for them, so it just all depends on your situation. KyMafia I Love Little People Location: In a van, down by the river I agree with Rockinas, I like that it AI is much safer. casualdust07 You get what you give Posts: 4435 Location: Texas

Page 50

If you find the right vet, some of them do package deals where you pay a flat fee, and the mare stays there until she is caught in foal. We found a vet that is doing that for us next season. Not sure how much it will cost per mare, but I know we probably spent $1000 in vet bills on top of 1300 +300 in stud fees with no foal because they never could get the timing down. new vet this year, hopefully things will work out! koi322 Regular Posts: 88 I’ve heard that some breeders do not offer the live foal guarantee if the vet performing the AI does not specialize in equine reproduction. Thankfully, my vet does specialize in this so I haven’t had to worry about that so far. I just left my mare at the vet for a week. I think it was around $8/day for pasture board and $22/day for a stall. I just did the pasture board. That plus everything else ended up costing me about $500. It would have cost close to that, possibly more with fuel cost, if I had drove her back and forth. This was actually my first experience with having a mare artificially inseminated. My vet is great and handled everything for me, I’ll definitely use AI again for my mare. FlyinByU Thank you for your answers! So is there anything special I need to do w/ my mare to prepare her for breeding? rockinas Nothing real special, just feed her good and make sure she is in good shape, the better condition she is in, the easier she will settle in foal. If you know when she is cycling, it can save you some money by taking her in when you know she is in heat and knowing her cycles. A trip to the vet can also determine where she is at in her cycle. I work for a good repro vet during breeding season and I know he offers a breeding package that is very affordable. And he is willing to work with people on bringing their mares in after hours, ect if need be. A good repro vet is worth their weight in gold when it comes to devising an AI plan. rodeoveteran I Don’t Brag Posts: 2792 I tried for 5 years to get 3 different mares settled to 4 different stallions, all AI, with no baby. We got conception nearly every time (even times we probably shouldn’t have), 30 days and a heartbeat

most time, sometime even 60 or 90 days, but they would absorb them every time. I am lucky to have a sharp vet close, who worked inexpensively but thoroughly through all of this. This year, we live covered the most problematical mare on a last minute deal. She had eye surgery and had just had the extra graft material removed when she came in to heat. Trainer said that he had 2 studs, I drove over, picked one, about 45 minutes later (with prep time), boom, she just made 6 months. The one foal she had previously was a no problem live cover also. While I understand that live cover is more dangerous to both mare and stallion, and not as lucrative to the stallion owner, it makes it difficult to get my very well bred (black type) mare bred to the quality of stallion that I tried to get her bred to (and lost a pile of $$ to boot on stud fees). I had gotten to the point I figured that if I didn’t get her bred this year, she would never likely take. Hopefully the OP won’t have all the troubles I did, and gets the baby she wants, on the ground with little muss and fuss. koi322 Go ahead and call the vet you’ll be using. I’m sure they’ll be more than happy to talk to you about a plan, even if it is a bit early. What they will probably have you do first is take her in for a uterine culture and an ultrasound to make sure everything is normal. Then you can work on getting a better idea of her cycle. Good luck! I hope everything works out for you! rockinas RE: ......rodeoveteran..... We have AI bred our mares for the last 10 years and always ended up with a conception rate of 90% or better. Even on the mares we have shipped cooled semen in on from outside stallions, we have had excellent luck with shipped semen. The only problem we ever had was with an older stud that we were shipping on. If your mare was conceiving but not carrying beyond 30 days, that is not the fault of HOW she was bred. I would say that would be nothing more than a coincidence. There is usually something going on with the mare for her to slip after she has concieved, although it does happen. And as far as it being “lucrative” to ship semen, I would beg to differ there, having done it for the past 10 years. Our collection and shipping fee of $250

barely covers the supplies that we need, the equipment that we have invested in, and the cost of shipping the container. Not to mention a 36 mile round trip to town to drop the packages off when we get last minute phone calls needing semen, and the time out of our day that it takes to get the paperwork processed, the pickups scheduled, get the stud collected, get the semen evaluated and processed, then packaged and sent out. Maybe we are doing things all wrong but I sure don’t see where we make any more money by shipping semen out than we would breeding mares onsite, we just can’t take the risks associated with having strange horses coming led on one place and having something get hurt or sick. kmcsunshine Goat Giver Location: Barnacle Brain Mary RE:....rodeoveteran...... I lose money on shipped semen because of the distance I have to travel..........I only wish it were lucrative. I too have had shipped semen woes as a mare owner, but it was not the fault of the vet nor of the stallion owner. My mare simply wouldn’t settle with shipped semen. Fun2Run A Barrel Of Monkeys Posts: 8696 Location: Texas I’ve hauled my mares to stallion stations before and it’s pretty cost effective. My mare care at one place was less than $300. Sure is cheaper than paying my vet, paying for shipping, etc. txaggiegal Veteran Posts: 153 Foremost, get a plan together stallion agreement, check out all their fees to shipping semen vs on-site (chute/ collection fees) if they are close. Next, when do you want to breed her: Jan-Apil she needs to be under lights every evening at dusk till 10pm starting Dec 1st. Use regular 60-90watt; but you should be able to read a newspaper in the stall, that is enough light. Also consider if you are taking her to a race breeding operation, they might require her to be EVA tested and some in TX might require Piro as well. Find all these things out. Shipped semen on a fertile stallion with a good vet is a great route. If you what your mare and when she starts coming into heat then take her to the vet. He will want to prostin her the first cycle after she ovulates which brings her back in avg 2-5 days; some sooner. Collection shipping cost vary

BARREL TALK from stallion to stallion; some farms offer first shipment free with stud fees and others can be up to $400 collection/ shipping. Some places will let you bring her when she’s in heat (if close) and breed on-site for half that and vet expenses vary from vet to vet. Most large farms are around $9-$16/day for board, but you can cut that in half too if you watch your mare closely. Let me know if you have any detailed questions, this is my specialty:) Good-luck! rockinas RE:....kmcsunshine...... Yes, distance can sure be a huge factor. Before I learned to collect my own stallions, I had to drive 70 miles one way to get to a vet who could do it for me. Eventually I just left the stallion at his clinic and stood him there, then I had to haul my own mares down there every time I wanted one bred. I ended up having to take the plunge and invest in the equipment and schooling to do it here and have sure been glad that I did it when I think about all the driving around I did, and hours wasted, for the first couple of years I was in this business. rodeoveteran I never meant to imply that stallion owners were making extra profit on collection and shipping charges....that is to say some or possibly most are not. Perhaps I was misinformed that ‘’some’’ split collections to breed multiple mares on one collection. I never meant it as a jab at y’all, but please understand that I was burnt pretty badly by a well known ummmm, that’s all I have to say on that. If y’all were offended , I humbly apologize! As far as my mare having problems, I don’t think that I left too many stones unturned. Had her cultured, flushed, biopsied, blood tested, been through the Regumate thing, even took her to Rood and Riddle where their repro specialist could see no reason why she should not get bred. Not to mention that I had issues with not getting ANY mare bred. Trust me, I was pulling out my hair, and considering getting my water and soil tested. Never blamed my vets OR the quality of the semen/ stallions. I had a growing hunch that this particular mare was one of those that just needed live cover......and with no prep or planning, she is preggers. Coincidence? Could be....could be just that my luck sucks. I would LOVE to have some success with AI, it would be much more convenient and productive as I could breed her to the stallion I REALLY want, but I guess I have to be happy with what I can get locally in the way of live cover. On an aside, I know that the extender used and some mares just don’t get along, but I have to wonder how much the psycological impact of the actual act has on some difficult mares? Maybe my girl just really wants to KNOW the babydaddy, rather than take my word for it? rockinas RE:....rodeoveteran...... It is true that collections are indeed split, but even if I only have to ship to one mare, we still do not send the entire

Page 52

continued...... collection because there is a certain way that the semen has to be processed out in order for it to survive the cooling and shipping process. We can generally breed at least 1415 mares with each collection here but in all reality I only send out 2 full breeding doses per mare and the rest gets dumped down the drain if there are no other mares that are ready. One breeding dose = 1 billion progressively motile sperm per 60 ml syringe, and if I allow for a 50% die off in transit (our palomino stallion only has about a 30% die off in transit) that is still 500 million progressively motile sperm (PMS) per syringe when the package arrives at the vet clinic the next day. If the mare is healthy and ready to ovulate, the repro experts say that 250 million PMS per dose is more than enough to get the mare to settle. As far as the extenders being a bad thing for the mare, I suppose that there are a very low percentage of the mares that are allergic possibly to the extenders, but I have seen way more mares have adverse reactions to raw semen itself. On any given day I would prefer to use extender, it has antibiotics and anti fungals in it to help keep the mare clean and the semen alive as long as possible. In fact when we collect for our on site mares, we do use extender in all of them. It isn’t so much the problem with the extenders as it is that a lot of mares do not produce the oxytocin that it takes to clean their uterus out after AI, as they would with live cover, since AI is much less (for lack of better term LOL) “violent”. This is why we give every mare that we AI here and at the vet clinic that I work for, a shot or maybe even a couple of shots of oxcytocin, to clean them out after the AI process, and some mares, require a post breeding flush AND oxytocin in order to settle, neither of which are a big deal, and there are some mares that need flushed even if they are live covered, some mares just do not clear their uterus as well as others do. As far as the mare wanting to know her baby daddy.....really....could you blame her? dymo_doll Veteran Posts: 299 Location: The RIGHT side of insanity! Amen to all of that! There is no money to be made in shipping semen. I don’t know how stallion owners can afford to stay in business. kmcsunshine The closest Fed EX air is the same distance as the vet.......I could collect him, but honestly I don’t breed enough mares to justify the cost of supplies. Do you need a third horse full of testosterone at your house? Chelsea Tanner Canine Carryout Queen Posts: 9998 Location: Iowa... I agree with RockinAS. My parents have been raising WP horses since 1998 and I worked for the barn where the studs and all their mares are at and if you even bring up Live cover around them (at the barn) they about faint, LOL. Can be very dangerous for mare, stallion,

handler, etc. We choose to AI everything and have had great luck with it. The two mares I had bred this year were hauled to the farm (Oklahoma) and they collected the stud and inseminated the mare AI. One mare stayed there for 40 days to be preg checked etc etc and the other mare we bred on Wednesday, hadnt ovulated yet thursday - ultrasounded fri AM and she had ovulated - we then hauled home 700 miles and thank goodness she stuck too. bar77ranch The True North Posts: 4600 Location: manitoba I agree with Rockinas.. Live cover is a dangerous game. we used to do it all the time. You have to know what your doing and not everyone does.. But if you can find a ranch and stallion close by its probably the cheapest way if AI’g is to much of a pain.. We also AI on site and handle everything and if i remember correctly a woman for 9hrs away from us brought her mare down left her for a month and she paid less that $220.. I love breeding season its outrageously busy around here but its fun.. We will be standing 2 other stallions also.. so its gonna make for busy nights and days.. lol bighorselover It’s better than nothing Coming from a small breeder with only a couple broodmares in the past I have always done live cover. I haven’t had the finances for AI or interest in the AI only studs. I have always had good luck with it my mares have all in all always breed easily this way. However, AI has become increasing popular and because of the stud owners that do AI only, I will be using AI on one broodmare this next breeding season. This is my first time doing AI on a mare. My game plan right now is discussing things with my vet and together we are coming up with our AI plan! I’m excited! Using AI does give you much more variety in some really nice studs! I’m just hoping it doesn’t hurt my checkbook to bad. All in all it depends on how easy your mare takes, as far as finances with the AI. And of course it’s safer because your not dealing with live excited animals. lol I look forward to the outcome of the AI! Good Luck! willyturnit Left Out Posts: 4588 Location: Silex Missouri As everyone else has already stated we are right there with Rockinas point of view. However I want to add that if there is a mare brought to us that has had problems with AI due to the extender we will breed a mare with raw semen. That is an option you don’t have when you ship semen for AI. We have a wonderful conception rate including two mares that were 23 at time of breeding and were bred to a 22 year old stallion. Both mares were bred AI. You must have a good reproductive vet, bottom line. They should check the semen to make sure what you have received is good viable semen. If you want to breed earlier in the year you

have to have them under lights to make them ovulate and you have to keep them under lights UNTIL after they are checked in foal. If you have a mare that is going to foal early and you want to rebreed them on their 30 day cycle again you have to have them under lights so that they don’t shut down. If you are going to wait until after March to breed you can start the lights later or even forgo the lights depending on how late you are going to breed. But i want to add that you need to check with the stallion owner to make sure there are no cut off dates for breeding as so many stallions are going to the southern hemisphere to breed and they go into quarantine in May or early June to get ready to ship. rockinas RE:...... kmcsunshine...... I don’t even offer counter to counter service on our shipped semen, it is 150 miles one way to the closest airport for me to do that. So I have to just do the FedEx Express or UPS Overnight Air. Both shippers will drive out here and pick it up as long as the roads are not bad, or I don’t miss the pickup deadline which is early in the morning here. If either of those happens, I have to drive to town. I would love to have your bundle of testosterone here but I am not sure what my not-so-hired help (Brett) would say about having a 3rd stud around! He thinks he is overworked from MarchJuly with the two that we have! FlyinByU Great info, everybody! So if my mare didn’t take the first time, we would be looking at around $250 every time we had to ship extra semen? I’m just trying to get all my ducks in a row so I know approx. how much this will cost. lol! It sounds like it would be easier to just leave my mare at the stud farm instead of having to meet up w/ my vet in my kind of situation where I can’t get off work easily, right? So if we took her to a farm it would be the stud fee, collection fee, the AI’ing, and the mare care? ~MeganP~ Veteran Posts: 236 Location: iowa RE:.....FlyinByU........ the cost of each shipment depends on the stallion owners. the stud im breeding to in the spring charges $350 per shipment. rockinas RE:.....FlyinByU...... Depends on the stallion farm, what the charges are. This is one area that you want to ask a lot of questions or things can add up quickly. For instance, our stud fees include EVERYTHING for the first shipment of semen. Most of the time the cooled semen we send out works so a mare owner doesn’t have to worry about it unless they are unlucky or dealing with an unqualified veterinarian. We charge a flat fee of $250 for every subsequent shipment that we send. However some farms will advertise a cheap stud fee, then on top of that they will have a container deposit, a chute fee, a collection fee, PLUS bill you for the FedEx charges. Last year, I was looking at breeding

BARREL TALK one of my retired barrel mares to one of my favorite race sires who stands at a reasonable stud fee. However once I called the farm and found out what all the “extras” cost to get a single shipment of semen here, it was going to be ridiculous. Once I found out what it was going to cost to ship from him, I decided I would be better off to buy an offspring of him if I got the desire to own another one. (I already have 2 of his daughters here so I will probably survive). FlyinByU LOL! Okay, gotcha! So I need to ask lots of questions! =) Thanks Rockin!

There is a judge at each obstacle, 10 points an obstacle, and also if you are to slow then you loose points. Also if you are to fast due to safety issues you can loose points also. They incorporate natural obstacles, like creek beds, downed logs and an old log cabin in one run. They cut out a hill with the loader for jump ups. It gets wild and whooly at ours, some of the stream crossings in the spring are ice cold and up to a horses chest. They have used bear and deer hides, live llamas you name it. This Tough pic by Lisa Colby Enough to Wear Pink rodeo was organized by the 2010-2011 IJRA Princess, Sydney Hurley. Members were asked to wear pink to show their support and they didn’t let her down. There were pink shirts, pink horses and a few pink parents. Sydney also organized a bake sale with the proceeds going to breast cancer research. The IJRA families and contestants raised $278 for this great cause. It is time for IJRA members to renew their Horse Resource subscriptions. Please make sure to do so and if you know any members who aren’t currently getting a subscription, please share yours with them so they can see what they are missing! Member Spotlight Renae Johnson Hi, my name is Renae Nicole Johnson, I am 13 years old and live in Leiters Ford, IN. I attend Culver Community Jr. High and in the 7th grade this year. I am the 2nd oldest of fou children in my family, my brother Michael is the oldest, then Rebekah (Becca) is a year younger than I and Elizabeth is the baby of the family, my parents are Scott and Gretchen. This is my 3rd year with IJRA, and this is a huge part of my life. In IJRA, I compete in Barrels, Pole Bending, Goat Tying and I also add Ribbon Roping with partner Michael Shreeve when competing in the Cinch Division. Outside of IJRA, I am active in 4-H, showing beef cattle, dairy goats and rabbits. I love to sing, and participate in our school choir and have been part of Indiana’s Circle of the State Choir for 3 years now. Along with my family we are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and I am active in their youth program. This past fall, I competed in the 2011 Princess contest and came in 2nd runner up. When asked “how rodeo affects my life?” I could not help but think of my learning disability and how being part of such a wonderful organization has helped me overcome major obstacles in my life. I would like to share my speech with you; “I have a severe learning disability. I am not able to read as most of you do. Therefore, school has been hard for me through the years. Unless you have been in my boots you will never know how difficult it is to understand reading, history, and word problems in math. I have tried very hard to overcome this, but it is really difficult! My confidence with myself and my abilities was about zero. I always loved horses and when I was at one of my low points my Grandma Vicky arranged for me to take riding lessons. I LOVED IT !!!! I got a horse called George and he was

a good old boy. George took me out of the boundaries that my learning disability had me in and showed me a world where I was just the same as any other person. I FELT FREE! Two years ago, Stacy and Lisa Hartle asked me if I want to go with them and their family to a rodeo. This was the first time I had ever seen rodeo competition. I knew right then and there that this is what I wanted to do. Poor old George was not up to rodeo competition, so my mom and dad helped me sell George and we went on an adventure to find Clue. When we got home, I had to start with the basics with Clue, he was only 3years old. With Stacy and Lisa’s help, I started practicing with barrels and then with poles. For the first time in my life, words in a book were not holding my back! I was on a horse and I felt free. In my first year in rodeo I only competed in Barrels and Pole Bending. Then in June of 2009, I started Goat Tying, what an exciting experience, stepping down off a running horse!!! Then when I was able to compete in the Wrangler which is now the Cinch division, I added Ribbon Roping, Michael does the riding and roping, and I do the tailing. WOW! another world was opening up. At the rodeo my learning disability does not confine me. My horse does not care if I cannot read well, the barrels and poles do not care, and certainly that poor old goat doesn’t care. Out there in the competition, it is just me, Renae Johnson, with no boundaries. Being able to participate in the rodeos has given me back my self esteem. I feel a lot better about myself and my abilities. The rodeo has given me the opportunity to work hard and to see the real me. Yes, I will always have a reading disability, but being in a rodeo has opened up a new world for me. One of my goals in life is to help other people with disabilities become a part of IJRA. We will show them what I know now, that being in the rodeo does not have anything to do with what you cannot do. . . . . only what you can do! In addition, my goal is to be an ambassador and to bridge the gap between persons with disabilities in 4-H, FFA, youth groups and the junior rodeo. Being a part of IJRA, I have learned to compete with myself and not worry about the ribbons that may be achieved.” I would like to take this time to thank the IJRA for the opportunity of allowing my to be me, and one of my greatest accomplishments this year is being chosen for the 2010 -2011 Indiana Cinch All-Star Team. This was a surprise to me and a great honor to represent this organization. I encourage everyone to give it a try, you cannot imagine the rush it gives you, I love IJRA!!

Will You Carry Your Cross?

Have you ever heard the phrase, “That’s just my cross to carry....” from a friend going through hard times? Or have you ever used that phrase when you were going though a hard time and you had the feeling that you had to handle that cross or burden all on your own? There are so many things I want include this month about Jesus’ mention of “taking up your cross....” But there is one particular incident in the scripture that seems to be jumping out at me. It may seem insignificant but it is mentioned in three of the gospels....so it must have some weight to it, right? The specific occurance I am referring to is when Simon of Cyrene is met coming fom the country as Jesus is carrying his cross. The soldiers, for reasons we can only imagine, compelled Simon to bear Jesus’ cross. Matthew 27:32 - And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to bear his cross. Mark 15:21 - And they compel one Simon a Cyrenian, who passed by, coming out of the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to bear his cross. Luke 23:26 -And as they led him away, they laid hold upon one Simon, a Cyrenian, coming out of the country, and on him they laid the cross, that he might bear it after Jesus.

I did some research and found that this one incident has much significance in more ways then one. I want to focus on how Simon’s mention seems to affirm that Jesus was definitely a man. I have heard it before, “well, he was God incarnate....he probably didn’t suffer like a real man would have.....” or something along those lines, referring to the scourging and beating Jesus took before he died. And reading through the gospel’s accounts - there is no mention of him reacting as you would think a man should react under such circumstances. The groans and shreiks of pain that I can

“hear” in my imagination are not mentioned by the apostles. This leaves doubters with ammunition to “verify” their claim that Jesus really felt no pain....or for others to feel somewhat disconnected from Jesus when he seems to show no signs of physical pain in his words that are spoken. Did he really endure the beating that they say he did? Did he really feel pain in the physical sense? Yes. I can only try to put myself there in the crowd and ask myself what would compel the same soldiers that were mocking him and spitting on him as they beat him, to allow they even compelled - someone else to carry his cross. It seems that there were only one of two reasons: either because Jesus was so weak that they had begun to actually feel sorry for him....or they were afraid that he would die before he made it to the final destination. This assures me that he was feeling the physical pain....and it was apparent enough that the insensitive soldiers were even aware of it. I think the one “blessing” that I got out of this passage when I think about Simon being compelled (they pretty much made him) carry Jesus’ cross.... was that Jesus also allowed him. Oh yes....if Jesus had wanted to, he could have called on the angels and called the whole thing off....but he didn’t. He suffered and he hurt and he took the beating. And in the midst of it all, when he was offered relief....he didn’t deny it. He allowed Simon to help him carry his burden for a REASON. How many times in scripture before Jesus actually physically carried the cross did he make mention of the words “pick up your cross and follow me?” Matthew 10:38 - And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me. Matthew 16:24 - Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. Mark 8:34 - And when he had called the people

Last & most important thought… Salvation is a gift and a choice...... Jesus died on the cross as the final sacrifice. When He was resurrected on the 3rd day, he defeated Satan for us. All we have to do is believe that He beat death and acknowledge it with our words. If we believe that and accept Him as our personal savior…we are promised eternal life with Him in Heaven. You can’t earn your way into Heaven; you have to believe your way there. So many people think they “aren’t good enough” to get to Heaven… But… Salvation is a GIFT from God and you don’t earn a gift. Gifts are something someone gives to you and for the gift to be yours, you have to accept it. All we have to do is accept that wonderful gift. I know I have…won’t you?

Page 58

unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. Mark 10:21 - Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me. Luke 9:23 - And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.

At least five....Jesus knew how he was going to die, and there was a reason he made mention of this and then the plan also involved a visual account of this for his followers. Simon didn’t have much of a choice from what I understand. But we do. Would you pick up the cross and follow Jesus? Would you be willing to put yourself in positions of ridicule and scorn for him in today’s world? Sometimes it is easier to lay low and not draw any attention to ourselves as Christians, but is that what Jesus meant when he told us to take up our cross? Was the cross he was refering to the same cross that Simon carried after Jesus? Are we to stand up and follow him and endure whatever is “thrown” at us because we choose to follow him? If we are to carry our cross, then how far must we carry it, you ask? Well, Jesus accepted the help of Simon, as we should accept help from Jesus and other Christians....but according to John 19:17 - And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha:

Jesus carried his cross until it was finished.

Until next month.... Happy Trails & God Bless! Christa

But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. Romans 5:15 For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Romans 10: 9-10

Mystery of the Month.... W

ell, it has finally happened...... we have ran out of pictures for our Mystery of the Month. All but this last one that I have been hanging on to....

I can’t give you any clues, except that this pretty lady and her horse graced the cover of Hoofs and Horns magazine at one time and there was an article written about her, her family and their rodeo act. Can you tell us who this lady is? Or anything about this photo? We are looking for as much information as possible. Correctly identify our mystery to win your choice of a one year subscription to The Horse Resource, a “Horsey Hat” or a “Horsey-T.”

Credit to Hoofs and Horns - The Horse Resource claims no rights to this photo and gives all credit to original prublisher of this photo. (Photographer is unknown at this time.)

Please send us your photos from the past....we’d like to use them in our Mystery of the Month. Horses, people, events, etc... Send via email to: thehorseresource@msn.com or mail to The Horse Resource 12601 S CR 200 W Muncie, IN 47302 We will return your original photos to you.

We Have A Winner!

We have a winner! Christina Zehender of Quickflyin Farms in Ohio. She was the only one (as of press time) to take a stab at the Mystery picture from December. Christina knew the jockey was Carter Riley and she guessed the year as 1968...it was actually 1970.

According to our source, to get this horse to enter the stating gates, the rider would have to get off and let the horse enter the gates and then the jockey would get back on the horse, taking to much time at the starting gates.......... After two races, the Starter at this race track insisted that this horse be schooled on his gating problem....So trainer and jockey went to school this horse one early morning.... This horse would stick his head in the gates and then he would flip back out....But if jockey would get off, he would walk in and allow the jockey to remount in the gates....... After this flip, the horse and jockey were not injured....But, this horse still never entered gates with this rider....He went on to win 5 races in a row. Thanks to Donna Clark for submitting December’s Mystery photo! If you have a picture of a Cowgirl or Cowboy that you would like to see featured as our Mystery of the Month then send it via email to us at thehorseresource@msn.com or mail it to us at 12601 S. CR 200 W., Muncie, IN 47302. (ALL originals will be returned.)
