LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

B

rrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Oh, sorry....I just came in from the barn and WOW is it cold! I guess I shouldn’t complain too awful much, up until the last couple of days it has been a very warm for this time of year in Indiana. Even though the temperature has dropped drastically, I still get excited to head out to the barn....it is almost foaling time! All of the broodmares around here are getting HUGE!!! We have one mare due at the beginning of the year and I just hope she picks a day with above normal temperatures, not a day like today. With foaling season also comes breeding season. If you have not yet decided which stallion you are breeding your mare to this year, take some time to check out the studs in this issue. Any one of them would be quite the “catch.” Until next month.........Check us out on facebook when it’s too cold to live in the barn...if it’s not too cold to live in the barn, then count your blessings on horseback! God Bless and Ride Safe, Christa Conway

A Little “Barrel Talk” Here’s a portion of a Hot topic on Barrel Horse World’s Barrel Talk.....Enjoy!

People who feed oats. I have questions.

sparky16 Posted 2011-12-22 8:59 AM Extreme Veteran Posts: 568 Location: East Tennessee Those of you that feed mainly oats. Do you add anything to them? If yes what and why? If no why? Also what kind of hay do you feed when feeding oats? Minerals? Supplements? I want to know everything. Tilt The Kilt Addicted to Baseball Posts: 20301 Location: TX Alfalfa and oats----TURNINW Veteran Posts: 268 We feed oats and grass and alfalfa hay and they have mineral blocks aggie5184 Regular Posts: 95 I feed oats, alfalfa pellets, flax seed. JRust Expert Posts: 2398 Location: Choctaw, Oklahoma I do not feed whole grains. My theory is if I can see mainly whole grains in their poop, they are not digesting it. Now, I find mostly grass fibers and hardly anything else. the barn my boys came from fed a whole grain type feed and their manure was mainly grains and they look better now than they ever have. I know many that only feed oats, their horses look great, but I believe they need more than just that. If I could find outstanding hay or alfalfa, or if my pasture was thick I would feed a whole lot less. but untill then I just feed nutrena “compete” and this winter I have started them on calf mana. edit to say this is just my theory, they also act better, and have more energy. they also have mineral blocks and salt blocks in the pasture. hwh Hero of the Year Posts: 9143 Location: Haslet, Texas We feed whole oates and grass hay. I keep mineral blocks and salt blocks out for them and all are fat and happy. Bibliafarm Runaway Bride Posts: 15665 Location: FLORIDA ..the oats in their manure are the hulls.. it is digested .. usually.. unless horse has issues.. oats need to balanced out.. i used to feed it but oats is 16 a bag here and have to feed a lil more of it to get calories so i changed back to Triple crown beet pulp and oats and alfalfa and flax rockinas Best of the Badlands Location: Central South Dakota We have one horse here that does not like processed feed. He gets 2# of steam rolled outs, with 1 oz. of Healthy Coat oil squirted on it,

twice a day. He gets 1 oz of a vitamin/mineral supplement called Octane from Oxy-Gen. He also gets free choice mixed (orchard grass/alfalfa) hay. He looks awesome. Moonchaser Zookeeper Posts: 4611 Location: Kress, Texas Alfalfa and oats. Loose vitamin/mineral/salt. Lady Shoot Yeah Posts: 3362 Location: Oregon! Whole oats. Each horse is different when it comes to forage. The main horses get 3 flakes alfalfa and 1 flake grass hay. The old horse and the young horse get 1 flake alfalfa and 2 flakes grass hay. We add AE to their oats. This is fed in the evening in their stalls. When we put them out in the pasture in the morning we throw a couple flakes each of grass hay out for them to munch on. They rarely clean it all up in the pasture and the 2 that only get 1 flake grass hay in their stalls clean up all the alfalfa but leave a little grass hay behind. sassy&tessa Dr. Ruth Posts: 8058 Location: Finally in Texas! I had to switch feeds yet again. Grasshopper just wasn’t doing well on the omolene. I have went through probably 4 different types of feeds-all processed-and I was not getting what I wanted. I went to whole oats, barley, vegetable oil and a vitamin supplement. Grasshopper gets calf manna on top of that. ALL horses look fantastic. Pretty coats, slick and nice and everyone has gained weight. Grasshopper not as much as everyone else but it is slowly getting there. AND, he is eating all of his grain. He would quit eating his grain and not finish it with the other ones. It is the fastest turn around I have seen in my horses and I am pleased. They also get coastal to eat during the day and a flake of alfalfa at night. jrust-I can see what you mean. When I first started feeding whole oats, I could see quite a bit of the whole oats-now I see barely any. There have been studies done on whole oats-what you see coming out is actually the hull. AND, when the horse’s digestive system figures out how to process whole grains again, it ends up using a lot of the grains...hence why I don’t see hardly any grains anymore. Also, Grasshopper’s energy level is up-I haven’t seen this much pep in his step in a LONG time. HarlanLivesOn Elite Veteran Posts: 801 Location: Kansas I feed crimped oats with molasses and mix cracked corn in with it. I add about a 1/4 cup vegitable oil so my THE supplement has something to stick to and wont blow away and glucosamine. They are out on pasture and get prairie hay. There is also a mineral and salt block out for them. SpinMeOne Expert Posts: 1483 Location: floating down a river

Yes MSM & Glucosamene(sp) as well as Performance Plus Oil from Marlene McRae runningkc Extreme Veteran Posts: 510 Location: Arkcity, KS Whole oats, flax seed oil, some minerals :) born to ride Elite Veteran Posts: 923 Location: In the great Osage, OK I feed whole oats, Mooreman’s GrowStrong Minerals, and THE. They also have free choice hay. wyoming barrel racer Neat Freak Posts: 3621 Location: Working or Riding We give our weanlings a coffee can of oats daily and they are on free choice grass hay and have a flax/protein lick. They also have loose mineral and a salt block. This year I bought some Calf Manna to try on my runt foal, but he wouldn’t eat it so I used it up with the others. They all got 1 lb a piece daily. I think they had a nicer hair coat... maybe??? But it is pricey and they looked pretty darn good before the Calf Manna. Lovinbarrels Chairman of the BHW Armadillo Roast Posts: 3753 Whole oats, Diatomaceous earth, Beet pulp, Healthy Coat, TLC performance vitamins, Orchard Grass/Timothy Hay, Salt Block HymtncChic Member Posts: 46 I feed whole oates, alfafa cubes and rice bran pellets. This was a combonation my dad fed to all his working cow-horses for years and FINALLY I decided DAD did know best. This has been a magic combo for me. I was feeding Purina Omolene 500, loved the feed but got to where I could not get it as often as I was needing it. I feed bremuda hay at free choice, mineral block and worm EVERY 6 weeks. My horse is a HARD keeper and this is amazing for weight gain and maintenance. HymtncChic Member Posts: 46 Diatomaceous earth......Can you elobrate to why you add this to your feed? I have heard it is great for all kinds of things Thanks SaraJean Northern Chocolate Queen Posts: 13605 Location: ND Mine are on grass hay / pasture, oats & corn for grain, 2 horses get THE, and they’ve all got access to loose salt & minerals.

Wild N Wicked Jd Takes Beautiful Prairie Stakes … Jockey Bill Ives Wins In Final Ride Of Career Hialeah, FL, January 1, 2012 – Mary Passmore’s Wild N Wicked Jd, trained by Jackie Kirby and ridden to victory by veteran Bill Ives in the final ride of his career, was up at the wire to win Hialeah Park’s $20,000-added Beautiful Prairie Stakes for three-year-olds and up at the “super sprint” distance of 220 yards.

Wild N Wicked Jd, who won his fourth race in five starts dating back to October 1, 2011, finished a head in front of stablemate Kathryns Cartel, with Tre Boss a half-length back in third. The winner was clocked in 13.106 seconds. The Beautiful Prairie victor was bred in Missouri by J. B. Misner (Terribly Wicked – Casha D Dash). Today’s victory would have been his fifth consecutive win had the four-year-old gelding not been disqualified after finishing first in mid-October at Will Rogers Downs. The stakes win capped a highly successful weekend for Ives and Kirby. They won five times together over the course of three days, including four wins for owner Passmore.

Hialeah, FL, December 31, 2011 - Fan favorite Tortuga Tony, saddled by Jorge L. Gonzalez and ridden by Randy Edison for owner Jose V. Ivanez, broke sharply and rolled on to victory down the inside in Saturday’s $169,300 Hialeah Derby at the historic Florida track. The winner was sent to the post as the third choice in the wagering at 3-1 and bested KT Makin A Tax Move by a neck with the runnerup almost a length in front of favorite and third-place finisher Jazz Be First.

Winning rider Edison was aboard Tortuga Tony for the first time ever, having been announced at change time on race morning as a replacement for Harold Collins, who was named to ride at entry time and had ridden the gelding in four of his last five starts.

The futurity winner, a gray colt by SC Chiseled In Stone, was bred in Oklahoma by Hafner Grain and Livestock Inc. Color Stone, who broke his maiden in the trials on December 16, is now a perfect two-for-two at Hialeah Park. He recorded a final time of :17.725 for 350 yards while earning first-place money of $57,126 for his connections. Color Stone is one of 11 stakes winners sired by 2002 Rainbow Derby (G1) winner SC Chiseled In Stone. One race later, Karl Smith’s homebred Takin Quick Cash, trained by Ray Robbins and ridden by Donnell Blake, overcame a bit of an awkward break and staged a furious rally to beat Oh Cooper Go by a head in the $54,570 FQHRA Stallion Stakes Derby (R). The derby winner, a Louisiana-bred gray gelding by Quick To Flare Up, earned $32,742 for the win and ran 400 yards in :19.632. This marked the gelding’s first start outside of Louisiana, where he broke his maiden at Delta Downs and captured a $10,000 claiming race at Fair Grounds this year.

Takin Quick Cash became the second stakes winner sired by Quick To Flare Up, a Grade 3-winning son of Royal Quick Dash who is also owned by Smith. QHRAI January Newsletter

look at some more babies, about their plans to train indoors this winter, how excited they were to go to the SSA and yadda, yadda, yadda... By the time I wished him and his family a Merry Christmas before I got off the phone, I couldn’t tell you what my heart rate was, but I can tell you that it was higher than it was during the weather discussion, and that I knew I was starting to get the fever. You know…. That fever that you get when you see the yearlings graduate from preschool to kindergarten and they start going good under saddle. That QH Fever that always starts to find its way back after you take a break in November after the end of the race meet at Hoosier Park, and the fever you get thinking about the prospect of the new 2 year olds making their debut at the track. Yep, I got it. Have you been feeling a little feverish lately?

Here we are in January 2012. That sounds like such a space odyssey year. Who would have thought 20, 25 and certainly 30 years ago that we would be talking about the plans for the year 2012? And who would have believed that it seems like a blink of an eye to get here? Who would have thought that we would be running for 4.5 million in Quarter Horse purses in Indiana?? In case you’ve been taking a long nap, that’s here now too. So, welcome to Indiana Quarter Horse Racing 2012. It’s gonna be a year in racing unlike any other. The ride starts in January with the Stallion Service Auction, and will end in October after the Fall Speed Sale and there will be sooooo many highlights and events in the middle that you just need to be here to experience them. We will keep you posted, just like always, in the Fast Horse Resource. So stay tuned…….

The hustle and bustle (ok, if we use 21st century terminology let’s just say it straight…. CHAOS) of the holidays is now behind us and we all have compressed the season into a few very special memories that will stay with us. I hope everyone was able to take some time to relax, reflect, rejuvenate and recognize how truly blessed we are in so many ways and I hope everyone has a blessed, safe and prosperous new Thoroughbred year. Thoroughbred

I got a call from a horse friend in December who happened to be calling to RSVP for the Stallion Service Auction. We talked about the rain and 50 degree weather in Indiana just a few days before Christmas. That conversation (referred to as nicety talk) quickly turned into the more important issues of “how are you and Tom doing”, “how many babies are you guys breaking”, “how are they coming along and how are you dealing with the rainy weather”, etc. And of course I had (and truly wanted) to know the same about them. I excitedly shared that we had just picked up a couple of weanlings the day before and that “our” Thoroughbred yearlings were coming along nicely, and we were really excited about Michelle Collins April April them and their progress. INDIANA STUD{ By Tom Mosley

THE Indiana Sired program for Quarter Horses

is currently using roughly $400,000; (2) -$100k added stake races, (4) maidens, (2) allowances and (6) trials. Additionally we pay out around $100,000 in sired awards directly to the sire owner, bringing the total dollars devoted to Indiana Sired Quarter Horses to $500k or more in 2011. Another key number to throw into the mix is this…. The total amount of money budgeted for the Indiana Bred and Sired program is 2.6 million which puts the sired program at around 19%, that’s “all in” purses, breeders, sired and owners awards. Have we got this right? Too big? Too small? Not enough? Too Much? This article takes a detailed look at our bred and sired program from different perspectives, let’s lay out the facts and figures and see what we have.

SIRE OWNERS: It would only make sense that from this perspective there is never enough, not enough money, enough races or enough mares….. which is most likely the most important statistic. The most current IHRC data shows 76 certified stallions and 367 certified mares. We all know many of these are TBs and Barrel bred horses but these are the only numbers we have. Those numbers put 5 (4.8) mares to each stallion, BUT, how many of those mares are owned by Stallion Owners… I think a very conservative number would be 50% that puts the average number of fee paying mares for each Indiana stallion to 2.5……..WAIT… Nearly every certified stallion donates a free service to our SSA, that takes 76 more “fee paying” mares out of the mix. 1.4 OUTSIDE ‘FEE PAYING’ MARES is what the average Indiana Stallion owner can expect. There isn’t any business model that can turn that into a profit, WHATS THE FIX? Keeping in mind that we are talking about “fee paying” mares, let’s take a look at the 2011 2yr old starters, by far the biggest bred and sired crop. By comparing the list of breeders to the of stallion owners, we can estimate the number of “fee paying” mares, I was able to only find two stallions that possibly had more than one and the max could be four, keep in mind the donated services. And this was a HUGE year for Indiana Sired horses, HQH Burn Notice, Air Born Leader, CT Leader, the Dukes’ pair of AAA 2yr olds, Twaynas Boone, etc. The point is this… How does a stallion owner make a profit? Stud fees? Impossible. Stallion Awards? Lets take a look at that. In 2011 there was $100,371. paid out in stallion awards, divided by all certified stallions that works out to about $1,300 per stallion. And for the record 92% of that money went to five stallion owners with the top two Twaynas Page 20

{

{ { { {

Dash and Leader of the Class taking $26,000 each and 52% of all the money. So the awards program worked for at least five of the 76 stallions, please remember that over 85% of the foals that earned these stallion awards were bred by the stallion owners. Another note is that the sired horses who are making the sired award money for the sire owners have no problem competing in bred races, or for that matter the SSA Futurity and Derby. A few things seem to be clear, there is virtually no money to be made in stud fees; the overwhelming amount of purse money being won in the “sired races” is going to a few dominate horses, and even a smaller number of horses are making nearly all of the sired award money for the sire owners.

BREEDERS: The perspective of the breeder is perhaps the

most interesting and complex. Keep in mind at least half of the dams of starters are owned by stallion owners and who are also breeders. How is a breeder effected by a sired program, what do they want/need to be successful, additionally are there “just” breeders? There are very, VERY few breeders who do not also own and race horses themselves. Mark Michel, the breeder of this year’s horse of the year seems content to sell and not own and has done well the past couple of years, Haynes Quarter Horses, owner of Twaynas Dash, also seem comfortable to pass the gamble on to new owners by selling their homebreds. After that, the list is very, very short, Circle S (Mari George) for example runs several horses, just not in Indiana, the business of breeding, raising and selling for a profit is not for the weak of heart. Without breeders awards the opportunity for additional income stops when the buyer pulls out of your driveway. Stud fee, vet bills, expense of shipped semen or mare care at the farm, keeping the mare for 11 months, the offspring for 20 months (hoping he is correct, average size, etc) and the ever forgotten LABOR. Is it possible for a breeder to break even if he sells his yearling for 4k-5k dollars, if it’s possible, it’s hard to imagine how. It appears what is happening is that breeders are put into the situation that the best chance for a profit is to keep the yearling themselves and run it, or keep the best one at least. This leads to the core input we hear from breeders regarding the sired program, they want the freedom to breed to the best stallion they can afford, so they have a more marketable, competitive

QHRAI News foal. Additionally, there is great concern that the addition of more sired restricted races will limit the racing opportunities for breds and hence lower the value of their investment. All reasonable concerns, but “WHAT’S THE FIX”? A lot of hard feelings have developed over the past few years looking at the balance of the sired and bred program, and it seems everyone has a good point. One simple factor is the quality of the breeders’ mares, HERE is an example: Let’s say that of the 376 certified mares that 10% or 38 would be considered by most standards a “high” quality breeder, She is a stake winner, producer, All American sire, solid black type sale page, or any combination of these factors. We will call these 38 mares $15-$25k mares, if you just bought this mare “who are you going to breed her to”? If you breed her to One Famous Eagle, for example, the weanling could sell for $20k-$30k, now the breeder has options, sell for a profit, or race for a profit. The middle mares: This is the group of mares that most of us have. 50% of the certified mares in Indiana would fall into this group. This mare was a hard running mare, a big heart, ran mostly high AA and maybe a AAA or two, didn’t have the big gear, but was quick out of the gate. She is by a solid stud that probably stood for $1,000 and her sale page reflects a lot of small black typed races. This mare would fail to fetch $5,000 in any sale ring as a brood mare prospect. Now what is a serious breeder to do when choosing a stallion to cover this mare? He knows his mare didn’t have the big gear, he knows 400 yards wasn’t her best lick, but he also knows that he likes the mare more than letting her sell for $1,500 to go run barrels. The seasoned breeder, when selecting a mate for this mare, also knows that to have any chance to produce marketable babies, the first foal has got to hit,and if not, the second foal definitely has to. The experienced breeder really has no choice with this mare, he heads to the local stallion service auction and buys absolutely the best stallion that his pocket book can afford. This is the Indiana sire owners dilemma, far too often they get the low AA or unraced mare, who is by a great grandson of Corona Cartel and a sale page that is filled with $10k North Dakota stakes, and on top of that they have to get chiseled on the stud fee, and they darn well better not want more than fifty cents a day mare care. BUT, that’s not the concern of the breeder. It doesn’t seem logical that the owner of the nice mare is going to be motivated by adding another sired maiden, he didn’t buy that kind of a mare in hopes he could win a restricted maiden in Indiana. If the Indiana race program doesn’t do everything it can to prioritize the needs of the breeder he will NEVER, EVER buy a $20k mare.

OWNERS: This is by far the easiest viewpoint to lay out. Most owners want the most for the least, they may have a lot

of different reasons for buying a race prospect, but at the end of the day, there has to be profit at the end of the tunnel. With all of the websites, showing race results, pedigrees etc. from across the country it doesn’t take a newbie very long to learn how important pedigree is. They want the best opportunity for return on investment for the least amount of risk. Ideally a bred or sired horse that could run open is the ticket, but there has to be a bottom side to get the big dollars out of that pocket. Owners have the least amount of time, money and personal commitment into the “big picture” of Indiana racing, but they are maybe our most precious commodity. WHAT’S THE FIX? First let’s be VERY clear, nothing is broken. We have a great program here in Indiana, but we want to keep working on it and make it a program that fits all of our horsemen, a program that provides anyone willing to invest in Indiana Quarter Horse racing a good chance of making a profit. The good thing is we aren’t reinventing the wheel here. The TB industry in Indiana and other programs around the country have tried different systems for sired and bred horses, most are dismal failures. The few sired programs that seem successful are states with hundreds of stallions and thousands of mares, and still we see Louisiana yearlings sell for $750 and stallion farms going broke. The facts seem to indicate that the worst thing that could happen in Indiana is to have a large group of sired horses who can’t run in bred races, or for that matter a large group of bred horses who can’t be competitive when running open. It’s so easy to take pot shots at sire owners, but if they are making a $50,000 initial investment in a stud and are a large group of mare owners, their needs deserve to be taken seriously. Remember “the 38”, how do we get more of them in the state? How are they enticed to breed to Indiana sires? Referring to a common cry from the balcony, adding a few more sire races isn’t going to do it, in fact the couple extra sired maidens will be won by sired horses who are fast enough to compete in the bred stakes, not by sired horses who ran fifth in the last sired maiden. The tweek needed for the sired program is more than likely the same tweek needed for the QHRAI SSA program, not more opportunities, but a bigger return on investment for those who are buying “the 38.” High quality mares bred to Indiana sires means more sire awards to stud owners, more racing opportunities for sired horses who don’t need the protection of a sired maiden and a sired yearling that will allow Indiana breeders an option of selling for a profit or keeping it and racing. We are always interested in the opinions of the horsemen who are vested in the Indiana Quarter Horse racing program, please feel free to share your candid thoughts with us by emailing Tom Mosley at brigandsilk@yahoo.com. Your emails,(unless otherwise indicated) will be forwarded to our directors and brought up for discussion at our next QHRAI board meeting.

Future Fortunes Crowns 2011 Champions in Oklahoma City

A one-time payment of $150 as a weanling to be paid in full to a program that can potential pay throughout the horse’s life—A drop in the proverbial bucket when compared to the simple cost of owning a horse. What if making that $150 onetime payment returned you $9,200, or even $11,700? If you’re raising and riding a Future Fortunes horse, that just might be. It pays to ride a Future Fortunes horse.

Recent high school graduate Monica McClung and her talented 4-year-old mare Easy French Monica McClung, second from left, and Easy French Alibi topped the BFA Future Fortunes sidepot to the tune of $7,830. Twice is definitely nice, especially when you’re winning the lucrative Fortunes Round for the second time. Kelsey Deal first won the Fortunes Round in 2006 with Dialaroosterfor-

The Deals went Jud Little’s production with full intentions of buying Vegas, who was a yearling at the time, because of their success with Dialaroosterforcash. Incidentally, Little received $2,500 on behalf of Cash Not Credit courtesy of Vegas’ Fortunes Round victory.

“They weren’t his best runs at all,” said Shomaker, who manages breeding operations at Shomaker Farm in McKenzie, Tenn., for her parents Ronnie and Martha Shomaker. “I was just fortunate enough that they had the sidepots to help me out. I sat on the 50th bubble until the very last horse run in the futurity and they bumped me to 51st. So, I didn’t get to come back in the futurity and that made having the amateur deal so much better.” Shomaker, who was competing in the futurity for the very first time, also won the $1,000 Rookie Championship and a belt buckle. “He has done real well for me all year,” said Shomaker, who also won the Amateur at Jud Little’s Bar Nothin Barrel Bash Futurity. “Future Fortunes has helped me out all year long. Any place I’ve been, it’s helped pay my way. Of course, being a breeder it helps even more. It’s a very good program.”

Kelsey Deal, far left, picked up $25,000 for winning the Fortunes Round with Vegas Or Bust, a full brother to Dialaroosterforcash on which she won the 2006 Fortunes Round.

Little had already paid Vegas into the Future Fortunes program, a mere $150 fee to pay in full as a weanling, and the Deals paid him into the Fortunes Round at the BFA World Championships. The Fortunes Round championship is determined by the best of time from the two qualifying rounds in the BFA Futurity. Only 50 slot holders were able to nominate horses for the Fortunes Round and their horses had to be nominated in fall of their 3-year-old year. The total Fortunes Round purse was $47,500.

Amateur & Rookie Champion

Jayma Jo Shomaker and SF Its Ez Bn French (“Fredrick”) picked up $2,500 in Future Fortunes cash at the BFA World Championships. First, they collected $1,500 of the $5,000 JEH Equine Reproductive Services Future Fortunes Amateur pot and won a championship saddle, courtesy of JB Quarter Horses. The Amateur Champion was determined on an aggregate of the two qualifying runs in the BFA Futurity.

Shomaker raised Fred, a 4-year-old gelding by Frenchmans Feature, a son of Frenchmans Guy out of the multiple futurity finalist and Albracht Jones Barrel Futurity Champion Miss Big Feature, by Alamitos Feature. The Shomakers bought Frenchmans Feature as a 2-year-old from Brian Fulton, owner of Future Fortunes stallion A Streak Of Fling. They also raised Fred’s dam—SF Shoot Me Straight, a daughter of the late Shoot Yeah, whom the Shomakers also owned and stood at stud. “There were two full sisters,” Shomaker explained. “I knew that I wanted to keep one by

In addition to the Fortunes Round victory, Kelsey and Vegas picked up $2,835 in Future Fortunes bonus money from the BFA Futurity. Of that total, Little gets $283.50 for owning Cash Not Credit and $567 for breeding Vegas. Kelsey, 24, who works as a dental assistant, trains her own horses. She and her mother typically buy yearlings and 2-year-olds and send them to Phil Haugen for breaking before Kelsey takes over all their training. “She’s not a professional trainer,” said Debra, “she just rides for us. She is also going to try to rodeo professionally this next year.” Kelsey also placed fourth the Fortunes Round with another horse she and her mom purchased from Little—Smashed In Paris. The fourth-place finish was worth $2,500, while a seventh-place finish in the BFA Future Fortunes bonus netted $2,970 with $202.50 going to Bill and Deb Myers on behalf of sire Frenchmans Guy and $405 going to Little as the breeder.

Shoot Yeah for a broodmare. We had so many babies that year we broke her out and rode her a little bit and just decided to put her in broodmare band.” With her duties managing her own breeding operation as well those for outside stallions keeping her busy throughout the spring, Shomaker tries to do most of her hauling in late summer and fall. “I have to play everything by ear in the spring because I never know when a mare’s going to need to be bred at the last minute,” she said. “I started hauling really hard in September when I went out to Jud’s. (Fredrick) just started doing really good and I hauled him all fall. He’s going to get a few well deserved weeks off and then go back at it.”

Owner/Breeder/Rider Champion

Ryann Pedone and Kiss This Guy, center, were the fastest owner/breeder/rider combination at the BFA World Futurity.

Ryann Pedone has had a dream year with her homegrown superstar Kiss This Guy (“Tyson”). They ended the year fourth in the BFA World Championship Futurity and fourth in the BFA Future Fortunes Bonus. Pedone, who raised and trained Tyson, was also honored as the Future Fortunes Owner/Breeder/Rider Champion.

Tyson’s story starts in Florida with Pedone’s father, who bought his dam Kiss Kiss This, by Chain Of Events, from Kappie Nelson and Jody Dorman. When knee issues started plaguing the mare, Pedone bought Kiss Kiss This from her father and made her the foundation of her breeding program. Pedone bred Kiss Kiss This to BHR Frenchies Socks, an up-and-coming young son of Frenchmans Guy out of BHR Missys Socks, by Can He Go. The rough-and-tumble colt, who earned the name Tyson as a weanling for blacking Pedone’s eye, really came on at the end of the year, earning championships at the JB Quarter Horses Futurity and WinMore open, just to name a few. Although purchased by first-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier Carlee Pierce after the Bar Nothin Barrel Bash in September, Tyson remained in Pedone’s name through the BFA thus enabling her to claim the owner/ breeder/rider title. Pedone and Tyson also collected $4,320 in bonus money at the BFA event, with $553.50 of that total going to Crystal Shumate, owner of BHR Frenchies Socks. All totaled, Pedone and Tyson, who were the Future Fortunes Champions at the LG Pro Classic Futurity, won $9,197 in Future Fortunes bonus money during his futurity career.

Champion Breeder

Jud Little’s great breeding program produced five Future Fortunes bonus money earners of $11,185. Little’s breeder’s share was $2,237. He was also awarded a silver vase. His senior stallion Cash Not Credit, now pensioned, sired the Fortunes Round Champion Vegas Or Bust ($2,835 in regular bonus earnings), Cash Not Corona ($3,000) and Whole Lotta Cashin ($315). Bug In My Frosty, his up-andcoming junior stallion, sired Frosty Magnolia Bug ($3,010). Little’s pairing of his Easily Smashed mare Smashed Mom with Future

What’s the Scoop Horse at the Corner Post: Our Divine Journey

By Denise Lee Branco Strolling Hills Publishing Reviewed by Carol M. Upton

Indiana’s First In-Clinic Stem Cell Treatment Performed in Daleville, Indiana at King Veterinary Clinic

I have been blessed with many animal friends in my life, but you were unique. I had a connection with you since your wobbly foal legs held you up and until your aged arthritic legs no longer allowed you to stand. ~ Denise Lee Branco In the award-winning Horse at the Corner Post, Denise Lee Branco writes straight from the heart about her deep, lifelong connection to her quarter horse, Freedom. At an outsider’s first glance, there may have been nothing special about this particular foal. Yet, Branco and Freedom connected almost immediately, soul to soul. Sharing hugs, playing racing games alongside the fence, and winning 2nd Place in a Kindergarten Western Pleasure Class, the two youngsters formed a powerful relationship. All that changed as Branco neared college age and her uncle took a fancy to the horse. Thinking Freedom would have a great temporary home, Branco let him go, only to discover some years later that he had been sold. What ultimately takes place is an astonishing tribute, not only to the profound relationship between a girl and her horse, but also to the deep support of a family that understood this bond and cared enough to see it through. The strength of this book lies in Branco’s skilled and honest storytelling. The reader is there every step of the way, reminded of the animals that may have graced their own life. Branco’s hope in writing about Freedom is that it will encourage animal adoption. This inspired family reading achieves all of that and more. Denise Lee Branco spent her childhood on a California ranch, befriending all the furry and feathered residents there. From reading horse books to competing in western shows and gymkhanas, Denise has always felt horses are a part of her identity. Visit her at: http://www.horseatthecornerpost.com/

There were very exciting things happening in Daleville, Indiana at the beginning of December. While most people were Christmas shopping, Jesse Minneman (from Milan, Indiana) and her family were hoping for somewhat of a Christmas miracle. With the help of MediVet’s latest stem-cell technology and Dr. Brad King of King Veterinary Clinic, Jessie is hoping that her red roan show mare, affectionately called Gracie, will be able to function without the severe pain that has plagued her in a rear ankle due to arthritis. Jessie is hoping that the same day procedure will be effective for more than the obvious reasons. Jessie and Gracie have quite a history together. You see, Gracie helped Jessie recover from a potential career ending injury in 2007 and Jessie wants to repay the favor. Dr. King performed the first “in clinic” stem cell treatment on a horse in Indiana at his clinic just off of Interstate 69 on December 5, 2011. When you mention stem cell treatment most people have an immediate reaction due to the publicized controversy over using embryonic stem cells. However, the treatment we are referring to here is done by a completely different way of obtaining stem cells. They come from fat. During the procedure, fat is removed from the horse’s hip and then stem cells are separated from the adipose (fat) tissue. They are then activated with MediVet’s patented LED technology. Once activated, these cells are administered intravenously. This helps to promote regeneration in damaged areas, like tendon and ligament injuries, bone fractures, and cartilage degeneration. Gracie will visit Dr. King again in a few weeks and The “Fast” Horse Resource will follow up with her progress as well as tell Jessie and Gracie’s complete story in our February “Equine Health” issue. Stay tuned.......

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!! I hope everyone got all they wanted for Christmas and that you have made your New Year’s resolutions. Christmas was good for me, as usual.....I got some doggy treats and a new doggy bed. We’ll see how long this one lasts with the “Princess” around. She got a new bed too....so that may prolong the life of mine for a while. I managed to get lots of scraps over the holidays, probably put on a little holiday weight, but hey....my New Year’s resolution is to lose that, just like everyone else around here. We’ve had a couple of interesting days at the ranch - guy in red suit with reindeer landing on roof and sliding down chimney for one thing. Also, our neighbor dog, “Duke,” has made his return. He hadn’t been here for a month or two - not since the day he tried to kill one of the chickens that live here. Folks here don’t like chicken-chasing dogs..... or egg sucking dogs....just in case you were wondering. Duke must have learned his lesson and thought it was time to come back to redeem himself with my people. I’m not sure if he got the job done or not though. You see, his “self preservation instincts” kicked in and he has pretty much made a pig of himself each time he’s been here

lately. I’ll explain.....the people who live here sometimes get bread to feed the horses when they put them outside in their lots in the morning. Each horse will get some slices of bread with their hay and believe it or not, they love it!! Problem is, Duke loves it too. Each time a piece of bread is thrown out on a flake of hay....Duke gulps it down. No chewing, no breathing....just, “GULP!” Bread gone. You wouldn’t think that was a big deal, just a few slices of bread, right? Let me elaborate. There are about 20 horses here at the ranch at any given time and each horse gets from 1/2 loaf to a whole loaf of bread in the morning. That’s anywhere from 10-20 loves of bread. I think Duke ate about 75% of the bread this morning. I’m surprised he didn’t explode. Okay, I’ll admit, I help myself to a slice or two, as do the other dogs who live here. But no one could keep up with Duke. They couldn’t throw it out fast enough to stay ahead of him gulping it down. We’ll see how long it takes “Ole Duke” to wear out his welcome again. There has also been some “schooling” going on with our “Yee Hawing” friend, Seven the Donkey. Seven has spent the past few days turned out in a lot with Lucky. Lucky is the older gelding that usually teaches all of the weanlings manners and he doesn’t take any “poo” off of Seven. Matter of fact, he has been leading Seven around by his halter for the last 30 minutes or so and Seven is leading fairly well. He doesn’t have much of a choice, Lucky doesn’t give him one. As for me, when I’m not shaking my head at the antics of Princess Annabelle, Duke or Seven, I’m hanging out by the fireplace. That’s a great place to spend January (and February) in Indiana. Until next month.... Don’t wear out your welcome and..... Stay warm.....

Breeding Soundness Exam - Mare & Stallion

Article By Dr. Steve Fisch, DVM

History is always an important part of a BSE. In the case of the mare BSE it is important to know when the mare has previously been pregnant and if there were any years she did not produce a live foal, what years those were. It is also helpful to know the breeding management program the mare has been under in past breeding years. The physical exam part of the BSE begins with an overall evaluation of the mares condition including body weight and condition of the teeth since dental health is directly related to body condition. A mare is more likely to become pregnant if her weight is good and she is actually gaining weight at the time of conception. If the mare is too thin or too fat her nutritional program should be adjusted accordingly. The mare’s external genitalia should be examined including the mammary glands as the mammary glands will produce the milk which feeds the foal. The vulvar conformation should be evaluated as some mares and especially older or thin mares will have vulvas that tip forward or have poor vulvar tone. Some mares have a sunken anus. All these defects predispose the mare to uterine infections. The internal portion of the exam includes a thorough palpation and ultrasound exam. The uterus and ovaries are examined to make sure they are normal size and shape. The ultrasound exam allows the uterus to be examined for uterine fluid, uterine cysts and other abnormalities. This part of the exam allows for the determination of the stage of the mare’s cycle. The next part of the exam is the vaginal speculum exam. This allows visualization of the vagina, vestibule, and cervix to check for adhesions, urine pooling and varicose veins.

A

s the new year rolls in, many breeders are considering adding new mares to the broodmare band and some new stallions off the track are heading to the breeding shed. If these new mares are not pregnant then a breeding soundness exam (BSE) is usually a good investment that can prevent a lot of wasted time and money that is spent trying to get a mare pregnant that actually has some reproductive issues that can keep her from becoming pregnant. A BSE should also be performed on mares that failed to become pregnant or carry a foal to term in the previous breeding season. It is equally important for stallions to have a (BSE) before the upcoming breeding season. Waiting until breeding season is underway and having mares start showing up not pregnant not a good idea. Each BSE should be designed to fit the individual mare or stallion and the situation that is presented. Keep in mind that the results of a BSE cannot be used to guarantee the fertility of any mare or stallion. A BSE can only be used to evaluate the potential fertility of the mare or foal at the time of the examination.

Page 36

At this point a uterine culture and cytology is performed. These tests give information that can identify uterine bacterial or fungal infections. If the mare has a history of infertility, a uterine biopsy is probably indicated as long as there is enough time to allow about sixty days between the biopsy and breeding the mare. When all the lab results are in and they have been combined with the physical exam findings, an intelligent evaluation can be made of the mare’s chances to maintain a full term pregnancy or to produce an embryo for embryo transfer. The data can also help determine a treatment plan for mares with uterine infections. These treatments may include antibiotic therapy, caslick’s surgery, acupuncture and a multitude of other treatments that will be decided on with the owner and veterinarian putting all the pieces of the puzzle together. Additional hormonal therapy may be added before or during breeding season.

BSE of the stallion also includes a thorough history from previous years and any medications the stallion may have been on while racing or showing if he is a retiring race or show horse. The history should include the previous breeding management programs, the number of mares bred, the first cycle pregnancy rate and the seasonal pregnancy rate for all previous breeding seasons. The stallions temperament and ease of collection should be part of the history. Just as with the mare, body condition and overall health is important. The stallion’s BSE includes examination of the stallion’s genitalia, semen collection and collection of samples for culture along with an Equine Viral Arteritis test. The cultures are taken from the stallion’s semen, prepuce, urethra and urethral fossa. These cultures allow the identification of any bacteria that are growing in the reproductive tract that may affect fertility. The EVA test can be taken with a blood sample. If it comes up negative then the negative test should be documented and the stallion vaccinated with an approved EVA vaccine. Most breeding farms require incoming shipped semen to be from EVA negative and vaccinated stallions. If the blood sample comes up positive for EVA because of a previous vaccination that was undocumented, the semen can be tested for EVA viral isolation. If the stallion is truly EVA negative but tested blood positive because of a previous vaccination, the semen

viral isolation test will prove he is EVA negative. The libido and ability to mount a breeding phantom or live mare is evaluated. While the stallion is being prepared for semen collection his penis is evaluated for any abnormalities or injury. If there has been more than a week since the stallion’s previous collection, a second collection should be performed an hour or so after the first so that a more accurate estimate of daily sperm output (DSO) can be obtained. DSO is used to predict the number of mares a stallion can impregnate in a breeding season. DSO can also be estimated by measuring the size of the testicles with ultrasonography. Testicular size is directly related to DSO. Ultrasonography of the testicles allows for evaluation of any abnormalities such as tumors or scar tissue from previous injuries. The semen is evaluated for color, morphology, volume, concentration, raw and extended motility. The motility is evaluated for total progressively motile sperm. The semen is also evaluated for its ability to survive shipping, cooling and freezing if shipping and freezing semen enter into his reproductive management plan. If the BSE is being performed because of subpar fertility then other tests such as endoscopy, biopsy, sperm chromatin structure assay and hormonal analysis may be indicated. Just as with the mare BSE, the final evaluation is done when all the tests results are available. Also like the mare, the stallion BSE does not guarantee a stallion’s reproductive abilities but it can be a good predictor of a stallion’s ability to impregnate mares. The results of all the tests will determine how many mares he can breed per day and per breeding season. While a BSE requires some time and financial investment, it is usually well worth the time and money to know where the mare and stallion stand reproductively before they are well into the breeding season. Working together with your equine reproductive veterinarian can go a long way toward having a successful breeding season.

Now that you’re into a new year, there are probably lots of resolutions that you have made, & yes some of you have already broke them. But how about this? Why don’t you promise to always sparkle when you enter the arena, I can come up with plenty of fixes for that.

Cowhorse Creations A

llow me to introduce you to Cowhorse Creations, your source for the ultimate stirrup. Christine of Cowhorse Creations does an excellent job with stirrups & we had them made for our NBHA district awards for a few people. No matter what your style is, you can be sure to find something that will go with your personality (and tack). I really like the guns with the flowers, these guns really stand out against the brown & black background with just a pop of pink. (Right) If you are into animal print, then these are just for you. It is amazing how good the print looks made out of crystals. (Left)

This red guns & roses set is awesome. It has a vintage feel to it & it reminds me of something that Roy Rogers or Dale Evans would be proud to put on their horses. (Right)

These turquoise stirrups remind me of Mexican or Spanish art. Zig zag patterns with bold & shiny conchos look great. (Above) Last but not least is the purple floral design. Purple is the color of royalty & flowers add a nice girly touch. (Right)

The possibilities are endless. To see more designs follow Cowhorse Creations on Facebook or visit

from Ariat International’s Quincy Collection. This is the Bronco Billie boot. The Quincy Collection is so fun & spunky, if you haven’t scene it yet then you must find a pair at your local boot retailer. I will again say, these boots are even prettier in person. It might be difficult to tell from the photo, but one thing I really like about these boots is the fact that they have tops that are a little bit taller than most cowboy boots. My favorite part might be the Swarovski Crystals, but the long horn cut out is nice too. And now I’m not sure which part I like better, the toe or the back. I love this flower, bird & horseshoe design. Of course the crystals inside the flowers are fabulous. I also must mention that these boots are limited edition items, so get them before they are gone. The members of the 1st Ohio Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association would like to wish everyone a HAPPY NEW YEAR! We wish for all our equine friends...SUCCESS in the job they do for their owners, lots of green grass, fresh water, apples, carrots and most of all LOVE from owners in 2012! 1st Ohio has a fantastic year planned, filled with fun and excitement for all the shooters! The 2012 shooting season is well underway and the weekends are filling up fast, so if your interested in Cowboy Mounted Shooting, take the leap and find the weekend that works for you and join us to give it a try! I would like to introduce to you the new 2012 Vice President of 1st Ohio, Joyce Nelson, from Okeana, Ohio. This cowgirl started shooting when she realized that Eric, her husband, was having more fun shooting than she was, competing in western pleasure. This gave Joyce the big incentive to give shooting a try. The next weekend she attended a clinic held by the Indiana Rough Riders. Well, it only took one time and she was “hooked”! Her old Rocky Mountain trail horse worked great for the first season, he was a sweet guy and did his best, however she decided that she needed a “new shootin’ horse” for the next year. Joyce mentioned the idea of a new horse to Bobby Ruwe one night at dinner and a few days later he called to tell her about a nice little AQHA horse, I’m Smokey Eyed, that was for sale. It was love a first sight, Smokey and Joyce became a very successful team and were off running and shooting every weekend! Eric and Joyce didn’t know too many people in Ohio, just having moved here only a couple of years earlier so it was when they started shooting that they found new family and Ohio really felt like home. Joyce likes the excitement of the competition but really looks forward to seeing her extended family of Cowboy Mounted Shooters at every shoot. Joyce feels that without Cowboy Mounted Shooting there would be a huge hole in her life! She loves the sport and the people in CMSA!

Page 44

Joyce has had the opportunity and considers it a privilege of working with CMSA on a local level, having been a director of 1st Ohio for a few years and now the position of Vice President. On a broader level, Joyce was recently appointed a position on the National Advisory Board of CMSA as a representative to the members of the Midwest Region. She is a hard working volunteer at the National CMSA Shoots assigning stalls and camper spaces to the shooters as they arrive. Joyce is also a Certified Range Master. 1st Ohio would like to “WELCOME” New Members...Leia & Patrick Aldrich from Brookville, Ohio. Tim & Elaine Dunn and Brandon Eads from New Carlisle, Ohio. Michael Ratermann, also of New Carlisle. Mike, Dawn & Cooper Smitely of New Philadelphia, Ohio. Sandy Snyder of Midland, Ohio. and Dewayne & Donna Waldrup from Moorefield, Kentucky! 1st Ohio’s year end Banquet is January 28th at the Kings Island Conference Center. Everyone is welcome, check our web site for details! www.1stohio.com Its time...time to quit procrastinating, take the LEAP on over to give it a try...COWBOY MOUNTED SHOOTING that is! It only takes an e-mail or phone call! HAPPY NEW YEAR! Buckskin Barbee cmsa65@aol.com 513 367-0644

Howdy all!

Welcome to this month’s issue of the Fast Horse Resource and Indiana Rough Riders Cowboy Mounted Shooting. Our 2011 awards banquet is set for February 18th at the Rushville Elks Club and we now have our 2012 competition dates set. We are also working on preparations, along with the Indiana Mounted Regulators, for the demos at the Hoosier Horse Fair in Indianapolis this coming April. We’ll be scheduling a new shooters clinic shortly after the Horse Fair so be sure to check our article in upcoming issues for more information.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT This month we’d like to introduce you to two of our long time shooting members and friends, Dan and Connie App. Dan and Connie live in Morrow, Ohio and are owner/ operators of the Buffalo Trading Post and Tatonka Dan’s Shooting Supplies. Dan is also a certified ammo supplier for CMSA and SASS. More information can be found at www. Tatonkadanthebuffalotradingpost. com. Dan is an Army Veteran and served 2 years. One year was in Vietnam where he was awarded the Purple Heart and a Bronze Star with V for Valor. Connie was a Registered Nurse for 20 years then in 1980 pursued and received an accounting degree. She went to work for the Housing and Urban Development Dept. and after forty two years of service in the working world she is now enjoying retirement. Connie trained and competed in martial arts and is a former Ohio State Women’s Judo Champion. She has also had the honor of winning the Ohio State Cowboy Mounted Shooting Women’s Championship 3 times in the past 12 years with the most recent being in 2011. Dan and Connie are both currently competing in Competitive Trail Riding Challenges when they are not at a shooting competition. Dan and Connie have owned horses for quite a while. Before CMSA they spent most of their time trail riding. Then like many of us, they were introduced to Cowboy Mounted Shooting and were hooked. They joined 1st Ohio CMSA club 13 years ago and then helped start the IOK club that is now known as the Indiana Rough Riders. They have also helped several other clubs across the country with their initial start up and have had a very positive influence on them all.

Page 45

The App’s have always had great shooting horses. Scooby, Annie, Peanut, Susie, Joe and Sonny were a few from the earlier years. It wasn’t unusual for them to bring 5 to 6 horses to a shoot and see other shooters not only competing on them but winning on them as well. If someone had a horse get sick or lame, or would have a gun break during a competition, Connie or Dan would be one of the first to be at your side to see if they could help by loaning you whatever you needed to get through the rest of the day. A few years ago at an IRR shoot in Rushville, while running one of the stages for the day, Dan shot his first five balloons and headed for the rundown barrel. He drew his second gun, turned the barrel and while he was shooting the rundown balloons Dan said “his heart about blew him out of the saddle “. He finished the rundown, proceeded to the trailer and put his horse back in the pen. He fell down beside the trailer and luckily, Karen Lee and Richard Fowler (two fellow shooters and EMT’S) were there to administer CPR until the ambulance arrived. Dan’s heart quit two times on the way to the hospital. He spent a week in a hospital in Indianapolis and when he got home was overwhelmed by the number of cards, flowers and phone messages he received from his fellow shooters across the USA from Florida to Arizona. Dan says,” Cowboy Mounted Shooting has been a very good influence on us both. The camaraderie of the shooters is what keeps us in the sport. This is the only sport that your very competitor will root you on and loan you the horse or guns that may beat them in the end. It has been a wonderful journey and we hope to continue having fun with our friends.” Thanks to Dan and Connie for their involvement and influence in Cowboy Mounted Shooting. That’s all for this month. Keep those cylinders a spinnin’ and God Bless! IHSRA NEWS

RodeoIndiana News from the

High School Rodeo Association

It never ceases to amaze me that most horse people you meet, in any event from trail riding to 4-H, western pleasure to rodeo, not only know you but your horse as well. Sometimes people know the horse even before they know the rider! Therefore it came to quite a blow to the IHSRA to hear that one of our alumni’s (and the president of the association’s son) horse was one of those stolen from the Southern Arkansas University Rodeo team. I don’t think we were ever at a high school rodeo event, that Lena was not present with DJ. Lena was a big contributor to several of DJ’s championships and buckles and a big part of his rodeo life to this day. Our hearts were heavy but our prayers were hopeful that she would be found.

saddening. It seemed as if the entire horse world was grieving for the Smith family and their loss of such a wonderful horse. Recently a press conference was held to announce that an 18 year old freshman girl from the SAU Rodeo Team had been arrested and held in conjunction for this horrible crime. Although the bulk of the details are still being kept confidential, it was a relief to hear someone had been brought to justice and held accountable. What saddens me, as a parent, is that a young girl has forever tarnished her life with such a senseless act. No matter how remorseful she may someday be, she can never go back and change what was done and will now have to live the rest of her life, branded (so to speak). God tells us to turn the other cheek and to forgive our enemies. I know it’s a very hard thing to do when you are angry and trying to move on. The lives of many people (and horses) have been changed because of what happened and life for the SAU Muleriders is going to be tough for a while, especially as details of this crime emerge. On behalf of the entire Indiana High School Rodeo Association Family, we ask that you keep them all in your prayers and would like to express our sincere condolences to Shaun Smith from Southern Arkansas University for the loss of his horse, and dear friend, Credit Card. For more information on the IHSRA see our webpage at:

www.IHSRAonline.org

News came to us a few weeks later that Lena was one of the four horses found alive, despite the circumstances they were put in and the condition they were found in. We were all so thankful, but the IHSRA family didn’t stop prayers from going out to Shaun Smith who was still missing his horse. Our entire association kept close watch on the internet to see if our prayers would be answered and the 5th horse would be found. In a way they were, Credit Card was found a few days later, deceased, a short distance from where the other horses were found. It was very

I.H.S.R.A. Member SPOTLIGHT

Jasmin Johnson

Meet Jasmin Johnson….she is a 17 year old Senior IHSRA member from Columbus, Indiana and attends Columbus East High School. Jasmin’s parents are Judith Finke Johnson and Joseph Johnson. Jasmin competes on her horses Sierra and Blazer and her favorite event is Pole Bending. She has been a member for 3 years and when I asked her why she likes participating in the IHSRA she told me: “IHSRA has helped me become the better rider I am today. Me and Sierra have came along ways. Since we started rodeo we have improved so much it just amazes me still today. And I know it was for all my rodeo friends for always pushing me and encouraging me to go a little harder my next run or critiquing where my hands should go and this or that. I know I owe all of them a big thanks for doing that for me. Rodeo has also inspired me to keep pursuing my dream in which I love. Jasmin’s future goals include rodeo’ing on a collegiate level and then after college going out and winning a couple big titles! But for now, she is planning on making it to Nationals!

When asked what her most memorable IHSRA moment is, she told me: “My most memorable moment from rodeo would have to be my state finals runs from last year. I had some killer barrel runs and pole patterns at Finals. But what really made it memorable for me was that when it finally hit me how good I was and how better I have gotten because I would always tell myself oh I’ll never beat so and so always doubting myself, but ever since then I just set my own goals I would like to beat then go out there and give it my best even it it’s not the winning time, I’m find with it. I’m just happy I gave it my best and hopeful I beat my own goal.”

Coleman Rude Coleman Rude is another one of IHSRA’s senior members. He is from Silver Lake, Indiana and is a senior at Manchester High School. His parents are Tom and Kathy Rude. Coleman is no stranger to the sport or rodeo. He competed for 5 years in the Indiana Junior Rodeo Association before moving up to the high school rodeo level. He has been in IHSRA member for 4 years. Coleman is one of our top bull riders. With 2 state championships under his belt and in hot pursuit of another, he is definitely a force to be reckoned with. Colemans future goals are to win a third state championship title in the high school ranks and then rodeo on a collegiate level. After college, he would like to take bull riding to a professional level. When asked why he likes participating in the IHSRA, he told me: “I like hanging out with my friends and the “wolf pack” and I enjoy the sport of rodeo and the atmosphere of it all.” His most memorable moment to date is: “The shaving cream fights we have at the state finals rodeo which always ends up being an anything you can use as a liquid projectile fight!”

CHRISTIAN COWBOY COLLECTION

w/ Christa Conway

Don’t Forget to “Praise” Out of curiosity I asked the ever dependable Google a question. I typed in this question: “How many times is the word praise mentioned in the bible?” Google didn’t take long to provide a link (or two...) that could answer my question. I knew the answer would have to be a lot, so I wasn’t really surprised at the approximate total when I read the answer. According to the website Google directed me to......in the Old and New Testaments in the King James version the word “praise” appears approximately 248 times. Other forms of the word praise are listed below and are approximate: the word - praised - appears 26 times the word - praises - appears 29 times the word - praiseth - appears once the word - praising - appears 10 times That is an approximate total of 314. What exactly does the word “Praise” mean? I looked that up too. The dictionary’s definition(s) of praise is as follows: 1. expression of admiration: words that express approval or admiration, e.g. for somebody’s achievements or for something’s good qualities 2. worship: worship and thanks to God or a deity Admiration, approval and worship.....those three words say a lot. Just out of curiosity, I looked to see how many times those words were used in scripture.... a combined total of approximately 200 times. I entered love and ran it as well, mainly to check for my own interest...... 551 times. Must be important if it is used that many times. From there I entered the two words that I was most interested in. The first was pray...... 508 times. Next, I entered sing....... 122 times. Now, I did not look up the context of each of those uses of the words I searched, but I said all of that to say this.....all of those words are significant in our relationship with God. If we have any kind of relationship with him at all, then we should be communicating with him....somehow, someway at sometime every day. Each one of those words are ways to interact and communicate with our father.....

Page 56

PRAISE (ADMIRE, APPROVE) WORSHIP LOVE PRAY SING You might think, “Well....I don’t feel like praising when my day has been awful...” Just remind yourself that those 314 times when praising was going on in scripture didn’t all take place during the greatest times either. “Well....I wonder what all those “bible people” had to be so happy about? Life must have been a lot easier for them since they were chosen to be in the bible, right?” Wrong. Paul praised God from prison, Acts 16:22-25 And the multitude rose up together against them: and the magistrates rent off their clothes, and commanded to beat them And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely: Who, having received such a charge, thrust them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks. And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them. David prayed and worshipped God while in exile (his own son led a revolt against him to be king.) 2 Samuel 15:30-32 And David went up by the ascent of mount Olivet, and wept as he went up, and had his head covered, and he went barefoot: and all the people that was with him covered every man his head, and they went up, weeping as they went up. And one told David, saying, Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom. And David said, O LORD, I pray thee, turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness. And it came to pass, that when David was come to the top of the mount, where he worshipped God, There are many, many other instances in God’s word of people in hopeless situations who chose to pray, worship, sing - PRAISE.

I think it is interesting to remember that those who God chose throughout his word were very much like us....and they - as well as their lives - were very far from “perfect.” We - just like those people in scripture - have a choice. We can build a relationship with the one who created us (by admiring, approving, praying, praising, worshiping, loving) or we can keep Him at arm’s length and curse him when things don’t go our way. Paul and David chose to work on strengthening that relationship when things didn’t look so good. “What happened to Paul and David?” you ask? Finish reading Acts chapter 16 and you’ll see that Paul was released from prison. Finish reading 2 Samuel chapter 15 and you’ll see that David was returned to the throne as king. As the start of a New Year has came and went, I hope that we can all work on building a stronger relationship with the best friend we’ll ever know - in good times AND in bad. He is worthy of our praises.

Until next month....

I hope everyone has a nice run as we all continue “racin to eternity!”

Happy Trails & God Bless! Christa

While checkin` on the herd Seen some had gone astray Shook my head in silance I was about to earn my pay

I gave Twitch some iron And I filled my hand That Henry would do the job To every wolf in the band

Gathered up them strays Head back to the herd Preachin` all the way From the Almighty’s Holy Word

Trackin`em was purdy easy But then it caught my eye Wolves were on their trail As snow fell from the sky

When I found them strays The wolves were closin` in They were full of death and hate But I just called it sin

It had quit snowin` And the herd was now in sight I`d seen the enemy defeated Cause I had a guiding light.

John 8:12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

One Last (& most important) thought… Salvation is a gift and a choice......

Read past issues of our Christian Cowboy Collection and the Christian Barrel Racer’s Newsletter at the website below!

Jesus died on the cross as the final sacrifice. When He was resurrected on the 3rd day, he defeated Satan for us. All we have to do is believe that He beat death and acknowledge it with our words. If we believe that and accept Him as our personal savior…we are promised eternal life with Him in Heaven. You can’t earn your way into Heaven; you have to believe your way there. So many people think they “aren’t good enough” to get to Heaven… But… Salvation is a GIFT from God and you don’t earn a gift. Gifts are something someone gives to you and for the gift to be yours, you have to accept it. All we have to do is accept that wonderful gift. I know I have…won’t you? But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. Romans 5:15

For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Romans 10: 9-10

Mystery of the Month This month’s mystery cowboy is shown competeing in a flag race sometime in the 1980’s (once again, we think - enlighten us if we have it wrong.) We do know that this cowboy is still very active in the horse industry, but has been more involved (and very successful) in Quarter Horse Racing than in flag racing in more recent years. If you can correctly identify our mystery cowboy, horse(s), years, location.....and give us as much information as possible....you can win your choice of a one year subscription to The Horse Resource, a “Horsey Hat” or a “Horsey-T.” Please send us your photos from the past....we’d like to use them in our Mystery of the Month. Horses, people, events, etc... Send via email to: thehorseresource@ msn.com or mail to The Horse Resource 12601 S CR 200 W Muncie, IN 47302 We will return your original photos to you.

We Have A Winner.... Nikki Fincher of Anderson, Indiana knew that our mystery rider was Jeanette Smith. Jeanette is shown in this picture competing at a rodeo in Chicago in the 60’s (we think.) Jeanette qualified for the NFR in 1962. She helped establish some of the barrel racing organizations still around today and she still loves to attend barrel racing events. Congrats to Nikki for solving our mystery!
