Important Information

All horses nominated to stake races will be eligible for out of competition testing from the day of nomination. Several drugs were added to Out of Competition Testing for 2011 including Zilpaterol, Ractopamine or any similar agent. If you have any questions about any of these rules, please refer to Indiana Code 71 IAC 8.5-2-5 and 71 IAC 8.5-3-4. You may also contact the Indiana Horse Racing Commission at http://www.in.gov/ hrc/ or (317) 233-3120. How This Affects You • Once a horse is nominated to a stake race, he WILL be in the pool of horses used for selection of Out of Competition Testing. • If the owner/trainer has been contacted and notified that their horse has been selected for Out of Competition Testing, that horse must be produced at the track by the time provided by the IHRC. • If the horse is not brought to the race track within the allotted time, the horse will be ineligible to race in Indiana for one year. • The current trainer MUST be named at the time of nomination. If there is a change of trainer at any time, the new information must be forwarded to the Q.H.R.A.I. immediately. • If a nominated horse becomes lame, sick or for any other reason will NOT compete in the trials or finals, he must be officially scratched through the QHRAI (prior to being contacted by IHRC) or he will remain eligible for ALL Out of Competition Rules. • Except for stake races where high money earners are preferred, there will be no refunds of nominations or payments. LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

I

t’s “Fair time” in my part of the country. When I was hauling up and down the road to rodeos I was often competing at rodeos held during county fairs. It’s funny how too much of a good thing can be a bad thing. Needless to say, after about the third or fourth elephant ear - I’d had enough for the year. Honestly it would take me until the next year to even think about eating another elephant ear - or deep fried anything for that matter. However, this year I am craving some fair food and looking forward to some time with the family at the local county fair with the kids during the Horse & Pony show. If your kids aren’t involved in 4H, you should check out your local county fair to see what it’s about. We’re excited to be able to pass out magazines during Quarter Horse Day at Indiana Downs in Shelbyville, Indiana this year. For those of you reading who obtained one during this event, we hope you enjoy your free copy (and maybe a T-shirt??) We will also have magazines during the Indiana State NBHA Show in Edinburg, Indiana this month. Look for us and stop to say “Hi.” We love hearing feedback from our readers.

Once again, don’t forget about our 2013 Stallion Calendar. It is always a big hit with our readers. It goes to every subscriber for FREE and we pass them out FREE several events in December. We will start reserving months for the featured 2013 stallions very soon. If you’d like to have your stallion featured next year....contact us at thehorseresource@msn.com Until next month.........attend a fair....eat some fair food and remember to count your blessings on horseback! God Bless and Ride Safe, Christa Conway

A Little “Barrel Talk” Here’s a portion of a Hot topic on Barrel Horse World’s Barrel Talk.....Enjoy! HELP! I have a horse that has a terrible reaction to flies. Flyinrose Posted 2012-06-15 10:40 PM Location: KS I have a mare that is having a terrible reaction to flies. I know she has this issue every year, but I’m at a terrible loss when it comes to finding relief. She was my Dad’s pride and joy, but he passed away and I don’t know what he did for her. I didn’t realize this was a common issue, but the vet says it is. We have tried 2 different steroid shots. She wears flyboots. She’s had idodine and aloe vera baths once a week and gets hosed down every day to keep the sweat rinsed off and her skin cool. Still no relief for her. She has small bumps all over her body. She rakes her teeth on her legs, rubs on the fence and anything she can find, lays on the ground and rolls and rubs around. It’s horrible! This only happens during fly season. A flysheet would be great, but they don’t last. I’m trying Benedryl now to see if that helps. I would love any suggestions to help this horse. I had to treat her for ulcers at the end of last summer. I think this is why. cow pie I fed Animal Element Detox to my horses and the flys left them alone. You can get it on line or from a rep on bhw. HorseMommyFiveO All the horses in my barn get feed-through fly control. The only flies we get are from dogs. When I haul somewhere, my colt acts like flies are a new phenomenon. Fewer flies, less problem, right? stayceem Maybe fly sheet? Im not much help. I used Equispot and it kept the ticks off but I dunno if it helps with flies. Good Luck StephanieNE The ONLY thing that helped my gelding was a combination of prescription drugs... He sounds just like your mare. He would get bumps all over his entire body (looked like hives) and then rub himself raw, even chew his legs because he itched so bad. Every year no matter what we did- it was awful. Don’t do iodine baths- that only dries the skin out and makes it even itchier. If at all possible, keep her inside during the day with a fan on her. But- we treated with the prescription antihistimine Hydroxyzine and some dex. The dex along did not work....the hydroxyzine alone did not work. But together, it did the trick.

Page 4

Flyinrose Thank you! I will call my vet in the morning and discuss this with him. AZippyHotrod There is a spray on dermatitis medicine for dogs that my vet gave me that really soothes the itch. Fans kept the bugs off the best goin4broke We just treated our gelding with the same issues with a shot of Depo Medrol... supposed to last for thirty days, we will see! Vet says that this should control the ‘histimine’ in his system a little better with each treatment as it builds up in his system. Peso Predinsone is the only thing that helps our mare. She is starting to lose her hair, all the same systems. She is miserable. We use Skin So Soft because fly spray makes her lose hair also. She looks like a little blue Smurf when we do turn her out in the pasture. Every bit covered. She only goes out if cool/breeze with less bugs in morning. I feel for them. Let us know how the Depr Medrol shot works. That would be great, one shot every 30 days. Even 1 shot every 2 weeks would be better than now. barn mom a gal told me she would buy the feed stuff for flies before she bought groceries. it is that good. HorseMommyFiveO I would too! I don’t own fly masks, fly sheets, fly traps, or any of that crap. The only reason I have fly spray is for when we go somewhere. It’s so nice to spend a day at the barn with no flies. Our neighbors are happy, too. Blondes Are Wild Which feed thru do you use? HorseMommyFiveO SimpliFly or Solitude. I have found with the SimpliFly that I get some teensy weensy baby flies on really hot days that never live long enough to become full sized or bite anything. They look like gnats and die within hours. The supplement is about 1/2 oz per day. It isn’t digestible (so far as I know) in the horses. It just keeps fly larvae from being able to hatch. A $35 bucket of SimpliFly lasts one horse about 90 days.

rodeopitmom We bring ours in barn in day under fans. Sometimes that is the only way to get them relief. Flies are really really bad this year. Use Pyranha and fly trap stuff. I @ate flies. Mine are standing at barn ready to go in. Some horses draw flies more than others, not sure why. Flyinrose The Dep Medrol didn’t touch it. reddun25 I know feeding garlic can help keep flies away. The horses do stink though.....but sounds like it might be a fair price to pay! goin4broke Hydroxyzine is our next option, if the Depo Medrol doesn’t work. I’m really hoping that DM works though, because the Hydroxyzine isn’t very cost effective. I have also looked into having a drug called ‘recovr’ compounded... that stuff worked wonders, but was taken off the market three years ago. I bought one compounded version of it that worked great, and another that didn’t work at all. My vet is currently working with yet another compounder to try to replicate the original formula. Like I said, I sure hope the DM works. At about one week out, I’d have to say that it has helped him some, but not as good as the original Recovr. kboltwkreations Have a gelding that gets summer itch and had allergy to flies like you are describing.. Had horrible bumps everywhere... tried him on the platinum anti-hist and it didnt help. we started spraying him down with YELLOW Listerine and it has cleared up all his scabs from the itch, bumps are gone, and the flies have stopped bothering him.. Spray it on just like fly spray everyday... Dont know if it would work for your more but its cheaper than meds... mraney Allergy panel followed up with the series of allergy shots. Fly sheet, fly mask and spray

News KENTUCKY’S EQUINE STUDY MOVES INTO GEAR Lexington, KY, June 12, 2012 – The 2012 Kentucky Equine Survey moves into gear this month, as the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) prepares to send 15,000 surveys to horse owners across the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The University of Kentucky (UK) and the Kentucky Horse Council (KHC) have partnered on this study, which is partially funded by a grant to KHC from the Kentucky Agriculture Development Fund (KADF). Both UK and KHC are currently soliciting matching funds from the industry, which are required for a portion of the KADF grant funds.

The purpose of the study, the first thorough one in thirty years, is to get an accurate inventory of all horses in the state by breed and use, and their economic impact of both direct farm impact and local community impact from shows, races and trail rides. Information relating to capital investments in the farm and farm equipment are also requested so that the full economic impact of the horse industry can be assessed. Equine being inventoried include both those on farms owned by the horse owner, as well as those boarded at equine boarding and breeding facilities. Details are being collected about the breeds of horses owned, their uses, and their estimated value. Other economic questions such as the number and value of horses sold or purchased in 2011 are included. Approximate expenses for caring for the horses are also requested, including feed, bedding, health, supplies, farrier, insurance, boarding and training fees, etc. All farm names and individual names are confidential to NASS and will not be available to any state or federal agency, nor to UK or KHC. “We are anxious to see the results of this study,” commented Anna Zinkhon, President of the Kentucky Horse Council. “This will establish our equine population including how and where they are owned and used. The results will allow us to take the next step to identify market opportunities, promote strengths, and address industry needs. These follow-on steps will benefit all counties in Kentucky.” Results from the inventory survey are expected in December, 2012, and full economic impact results will be available during the first quarter of 2013. For more information, contact either Ginny Grulke, Executive Director of the Kentucky Horse Council, or Dr. Jill Stowe, University of Kentucky Agricultural Economics.

Kentucky Horse Council Develops Horse Show Facility Database Lexington, KY, June 6, 2012 - Having sufficient equine facilities to host both large and small horse shows is a key infrastructure requirement of the Kentucky horse industry.

The Kentucky Horse Council (KHC) has just completed the first phase of the development of a horse show facility listing database. This database, available on the KHC website at www.kentuckyhorse.org/kentucky-horse-showfacilities/, lists both public facilities and private facilities which are available for public rental. The listings provide a profile of the facility, including the size and type of the arenas (indoor and outdoor), stabling facilities, cross-

Page 12

country courses, jumps, dressage arenas, barrels and poles, restrooms, concessions, and overnight hook-ups. “This list will make it much easier for those hosting or managing horse shows and events to locate a variety of facility options,” said Margie Loeser, KHC board member and chair of the KHC Competition Committee. “We hope this encourages more local, grassroots horse shows, as well as facilitates the ongoing success of established sanctioned shows.” Phase two of this effort will be to provide similar information for horse show facilities at county fairgrounds. Although rural residents are familiar with county show facilities in their area, others across the state may not realize the opportunity to host horse shows at these facilities. Ginny Grulke, KHC Executive Director, added, “In addition to these lists being an inventory of what is available around the Commonwealth, it can also be the basis of determining which areas of the Commonwealth need better horse event facilities. Horse shows and events are an important part of rural economic development and tourism. The mission of KHC is to support both the industry and our rural communities in this way.” The Horse Council encourages equestrians to review the horse show facility list, and notify the Council if any facilities were missed. QHRAI July Newsletter

July is a transition month for Quarter Horse Racing in Indiana. We finish up racing at Indiana Downs on July 7th and make the move to Hoosier Park for our opening races on August 3rd. It’s hard to believe that June is finished, and there is only one more week of Quarter Horse Racing at Indiana Downs. I would like to personally thank Jon and Janie Schuster, Johnnie Jamison and his gate crew and Scott Peine and his race office staff for making our experience at Indiana Downs a great one. The Quarter Horse Industry in Indiana has great people in. I am thankful for all the people who stepped up recently to help get our trials rescheduled. I would like to especially thank Tom for working with the racing office to get the races rescheduled as quickly as they were and for making the calls to trainers to inform them of the changes. A special thank you to Gerardo for helping with translating, and to Chris Duke for getting Youth Day rescheduled for a week later without missing a beat. And thanks to all the horsemen and people who were affected by the rescheduling who were understanding and made it possible and easy because of your flexibility. We really do have great, understanging people in our industry. Thank you all.

QH

y a D h t u o Y I A at Indiana Downs 2012 R June 23, 2012

After a one week delay, 15 Youth and some of their parents enjoyed a full day learning about Quarter Horse Racing in Indiana at the QHRAI Youth Day at Indiana Downs.

Morning Training

Youth Day participants watch morning works at trackside and from from a higher view in the clockers Room.

Understanding mutuals, simulcasting and administration while getting a tour of the facility was a very important part of the morning session.

Starting Gates Youth Day Participants enjoyed a special "up close" look of the starting gates while Starter Johnnie Jamison talked about the process that horses go through before being able to "break" from the gates. Johnnie also demonstrated how the headers must be positioned in the actual gate with the horse in it, and youth had spectacular view of two horses from the Mosley Stable being schooled from the gates!! Page 20

B.K. Marshall, Head Foreman of the Starting Gates, explained how information is tracked about horses when they are schooled at the gates and if there is information noted during racing. Participants also learned about the process of entering horses and the “draw” process.

The “Backside”

The group continued their tour to the "backside" of the track where they met with Trainer Tom Mosley. Tom explained the versatility of the Racing American Quarter Horse and the many opportunities for post racing careers. Anatomy, and importance of good equine husbandry were key points of his talk. Tom continues the tour in his shed row discussing Quarter Horse confirmation, coloring, leg care and daily operations in his stable.

Equipment

Dickey Benton and John McCreary talked about equipment during training and racing, including blinkers, bits and bridles. They also covered the proper technique for wrapping legs and tacking a horse for the morning work.

The Real Deal

The night of Racing began with the youth being recognized by having the first race of the night named for them, and the second race highlighted "Sarah Compton Classic" was a race that we recognized a special friend of the QHRAI, Sarah Compton. Sarah was a guest of ours last year for Quarter Horse Day. She made a scrap book and brought it to the Hoosier Horse Fair this spring and shared it with everyone. Sarah recently had heart surgery, and we are very happy that she participated with us on youth day and will be back with her scrap book on June 30th. After dinner, Senior State Steward Stan Bowker, explains the stewards responsibility during the races. After a full day of learning about all aspects of Quarter Horse Racing, participants took a trainers test which will be graded. A combination of the test scores and level of participation through the day will be evaluated to determine who will win a $1,000 scholarship and represent Indiana at the 2012 AQHA Youth Experience. After dinner, everyone was assigned to work with a trainer to prepare thier horses for the races Saturday night, and then walked with them to the paddock to watch their horses get saddled and run in a race. Some even got to pose in the win picture!! BUT EVERYONE saw GREAT QUARTER HORSE RACING from the FASTEST HORSES IN THE WORLD. Page 21

FLORIDA

We are quickly approaching the new year for IBRA as of August 1, 2012. Since we have had a seemingly slow year, I would like to see us kick it up a notch, hitting this upcoming year hard. It will take more than one person to make this happen. As I get arenas scheduled, it will be important to spread the word about the shows and helping to grow our association here in Florida. Thank you to all who have supported us this far and I am looking forward to a productive new year.

ILLINOIS

I would like to remind you of some upcoming events with the IL IBRA. We will once again be having our silent auction to raise money for our year end awards and State Show. We will have this on June 23, 2012 at the King City Saddle Club IBRA show. In the past this has been a big success for us! If you have any items that you would like to donate for our auction or if you know of any business that would donate an item it would be greatly appreciated. Items do not have to be horse related as all items will be gladly accepted. The more items we have to bid on the more money we will make! Please remember that it takes a lot of money to give quality awards for both the Year End and State Show awards so we need ALL the help we can get. If you would be willing to help with the silent auction which includes helping to watch the tables on that day please let me or Susan Mosby know. Also if you have any other ideas about how we can raise some more money please contact either one of us. Our IL IBRA State Show will be held on SATURDAY AUGUST 25, 2012 at 10:00 A.M. at the King City Saddle Club in Mt. Vernon, IL. This year it will be a Super Show and the King City Saddle Club will also have a Super Show on August 26, 2012 at 10:00 A.M. There will be approximately $5000 in added money this weekend!!! Mark your calendars now and plan to attend!!! We will once again be giving our Year End Awards to the top five in each division in the Open, Youth, and Masters at this show. Also again this year if you are an IL IBRA member we will give awards for classes on that day. As in years past we are giving you an incentive to get Sponsors for the IL IBRA. If you get $100 in sponsors we will give you a free entry at our state show. You will also be qualified to run in the Sponsor/Director Race at the East National Finals in October. Don’t forget to check out the IL page on the website to see the list of Sponsors and to print off a sponsor sheet that you can take to a business 502-239-4000 office 502-239-4100 fax Shane@ibra.us

when you ask them for a sponsorship. You can also see the approved shows list, show results, and the standings! Good luck the rest of the season and if you have any questions or ideas please feel free to contact me. Donald Hutchcraft IL IBRA State Director 618-728-4317

KENTUCKY

Hello KY! This is a very exciting time of the year with only a month left to accumulate points and move up on the leader board to become either a Top Dog or potentially a State Champion! Not one division is locked down for placing anyone could be caught and any position could change. Reminder we have a double point show coming up July 7th at Valley View Farms in Vine Grove, KY. All the proceeds will go to the KY IBRA yearend awards fund. In order for everyone to receive saddles we need strong support at this show! You can come and run once but get double the points. This means if you place you will qualify for the National Finals! Good Luck and I hope to see you all soon! Shane

MISSISSIPPI

Hello Everyone, The year is winding down with two shows left unless anyone wants to have a show at an arena somewhere soon before August to end out the point season of 2012. I have all the equipment to put on a show. I’d like to have a state show in August but I need sponsorship money to add to make it worth having. Hopefully, there will be an increase in the number of shows in Mississippi in 2013. Please send me people’s names and numbers for potential barrel races and I will contact them ASAP. Any thoughts or suggestions feel free to contact me anytime. Sherri Surman

NEW JERSEY

We had a great turnout for the Horse Park of NJ Show. Ms Sharon Camarillo was there. She was gracious enough to donate two signed DVDs to be SILENT AUCTIONED for IBRA NJ. I will be accepting bids by email, until AUG 1st (all proceeds will go towards year-end awards /state finals.)

NEW YORK

Thank you to everyone that came out to the Barrel Race on May 20th. We had a great turn out with 52 Riders, Barrel Racers hauled in from as far away as Connecticut and Upstate New York. Karen Mouacdie Reeves pulled in four checks and hopefully had a great close to her weekend here on Long Island. Jeremy Reid went home to Connecticut after he earned two checks in the Open & Youth Divisions. The balance of our $2500 Payout went to our own Long Island Barrel Racers that placed in the Open, Master’s and Youth Divisions. Bob Hering kept the arena in tip top shape while Joey, Shane and the rest of the guys handled the Barrels & the Gate, Thanks Guys!! Carolyn Wolosin-Hering handled the Announcing while Jeanie Stillwachs managed all the entries, Thank you Ladies!! A Big Thanks to Shannon Rego Hartenstein,Jennifer Stokes and Jennifer Protasewicz-Honigman for getting the Barrels, organizing our up coming events and putting the word out about the Shows!! Laurie Hallock Wolny is just the Best, what a pleasure it was to deal with her and the Staff of Annie’s Acres, very professional. We were treated like family, I cannot say enough about the Trailer parking, the grounds and the layout, just perfect! Our next Show will be on June 3rd at Annie’s Acres. If you like what we did Sunday, well there will be more of the same at our next Show. With $1000 added to the Open, $100 to the Master’s and $100 added to the Youth. We are very proud of our Sponsors and would like to thank American Muffler and Auto Repair, Primrose Path Stables and Best-Temp Heating & Air Conditioning for their support. We are getting the word out to the Photographers so we can have pictures of the runs posted here. Also in June we will be hosting the Saddle Up for St. Jude Charity event on the 24th. 100% of the proceeds will go to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to help the fight against Childhood Cancers. This is the first event of it’s kind on Long Island where Barrel Racers will get their support for these kids and raise money to help them. In the coming days I will be posting the fundraising information right here on this page for anyone interested in helping out the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

OHIO

Whether you’ve been Barrel Racing inside or under the lights of an outdoor pen, it seems everyone is hauling to the shows on our full IBRA Schedule. June is here, & State Finals are right around the corner. Speaking of State Finals, yes, you can find our Show Bill on the Approved show listing. Most of you know, this was the one daunting task I was unsure of as a Rookie State Director. After much contemplation, I am pleased to announce that I have the Home Office helping me to organize and put on a Finals so that it will run smoothly. This will be a learning experience for me. Filling the “boots” of a Show Producer, at a much larger scale than I have been comfortable with this year.

Along with talk on the State Finals, comes YEAR END AWARDS! I’ve been ordering awards. Keeping them along the lines of the overwhelming response of “USEFUL” awards. I must say this has been the most exciting part of being the Ohio Director. It’s hard to keep everything on the “down low”, but I think you will all be well rewarded. And what would an update be without mentioning SPONSORS? Thru many calls, emails, & letters, we are very lucky to have such great companies interested in sponsoring our Sport & Association. Thank you to those that have participated in gaining Ohio Sponsors. Without these additional companies, we would be unable to earn those fine awards we have been so spoiled with. Please, please....if you have yet to add a Sponsor, you still have time. We all need to work together thru 2012 for a successful season. Last but not least....the OHIO FUNDRAISER RACE. Wow! What an experience being on the other side of the entry window. Those of you that were able to join us, thank you. Although we had over $1500 Guaranteed Added $, the turnout was much less than expected. All Added Money was Guaranteed, & Paid Out. WB Ranch is a very nice facility, and I thank Lisa for all of her help in the Entry Booth, and for finding us a great Announcer. Keep on running fast, hauling safely, and it never hurts to be friendly. Lynn Brenner

WISCONSIN

I have gotten some entries for the state finals and they included sponsors. Thank you so much Charlene and Denise. Please get your entries in and if you are able to get sponsors that is great. Remember the more sponsors the more awards! If you have not gotten a state finals entry and sponsor form please let me know and I will get them to you. If you have any questions or suggestions please let me know. Take care, Patti WI

Freckles & Her Fall

The past month has been mostly rather “blah” around here. There have been no more new babies to write about, and the ones that are here have each other to play with....they aren’t much interested in me anymore. (Although they are still kind of fun to watch!) The “new crew” has been spending a lot of time in the shade taking it easy. It has been very HOT and DRY here. We’ve all been getting brushed way too often and I feel I have endured more than my fair share of grooming. I am short haired, people. Just because all my hair decided to turn loose at once - they call it shedding - get over it. By the way - here’s a tip from me: You know the tear away lint rollers that you can buy? They work great on my shedding hair. Of course, I still need the comb once in a while, but the lint roller is the berries. You should try them on your dogs at home. Now, back to my adventures from the past month. The family decided to take a trip to the lake in Kentucky and get things ready for the

“Me”

summer trips. Of course, I always get to go on these trips, that’s a “given.” This trip the family decided to include Freckles. Since we are officially the only two permanent members of the “Crew,” I could see how they came to this conclusion. Duke actually, kind of, still belongs to the neighbors, so he stays in Indiana. This would be Freckles’ first trip to the lake. Freckles did fine for the first few days. She made a couple of trips down the boat ramp to the pier and even did well staying close to the people. They were really bragging on her. I have to admit, that staying close isn’t my strong suit....I have a wandering mind.... especially when I see a critter. My people compare my attention span to the dog in the movie “Up.” You know, when the dog is talking and all of a sudden he turns and says, “Squirrel!” That would be me. Well, I had an episode. I guess you could call it that. As we were walking down the steep ramp to the pier (with an extremely steep drop off into the Kentucky hillside just on the side

O

of the road) I seen a critter. Off I went with Freckles right behind me. Unfortunately she has never witnessed this kind of terrain before. She is used to Indiana where when you jump a log there is land on the other side. Here there wasn’t. I managed to make my way back up the hillside after scaring the critter off. Freckles was not so fortunate. Needless to say, gravity was not her friend. She is larger than me and couldn’t get her footing as well either. The people were in a panic trying to spot her and yelling out for her. She finally made it down to the edge of the water (probably about 300 feet down) where some boaters yelled back up to the people and let them know she was alright. We made our way down and around and Freckles met us on the run. She was a bit shaken, but glad to be reunited. She didn’t follow me anymore, she followed the lady like she was stuck to her after that. I kind of felt bad, but a little part of me thought I almost had the house to myself again. (Sorry, Freckles.) But the truth is, I kind of like having the furball around. She sheds way worse than me....so it takes the focus away. LOL!!! Until next month, Be safe......

INDEPENDENCE DAY It is the sacrifice of the few that provides Independence Day to us every day of our lives.

This month we celebrate the 236th anniversary of our independence as a country. And this one will be special to me. Oh, it might have a picnic, friends, good food and fireworks built into it; but this year independence came with a new price tag. On June 5th, I said goodbye to my son, Taylor, as I watched him board a bus and head off to the United States Marine Corp boot camp in San Diego. It was one of the proudest and saddest days of my life. I said “goodbye” to a boy and I’ll say “hello” to a man in thirteen weeks. My father was 82nd Airborne in the United States Army. I wear his dog tags proudly every minute of every day around my neck (except when I took this picture of them on 9/11/11). The sound of them around my neck reminds me of him; but it also reminds me of the price paid by so many; just so I could be free. I was raised with a deep-seeded sense of patriotism. I stand at attention when the Star Spangled Banner is played and I put my hand over my heart when the Pledge of Allegiance is recited. I do so because my father taught me to do so. God help us to pass that on to each generation. The flag is more important than ever because my son is one “of the brave” and chose to defend the principles “for which it stands.” I may not agree with the present leadership or the direction of this country; but there is no other place in the world that I would want to live. I want to take my space this month to say “thank you” to every soldier, past and present, who has served our country in defense of that independence. I’d also like to express my gratitude to every family member – especially each father and mother – who has sacrificed their child to go and serve in the armed forces. I now understand that sacrifice! And if your child is deployed in another land then I admire your strength of getting through every day. I’m not sure how you do it; but “thank you”. It is the sacrifice of the few that provides Independence Day to us every day of our lives.

Chris will be appearing and selling his book at Hoosier Park this month. Come and purchase a signed copy on July 13th (evening) and 14th (throughout the day) right inside the main entrance of the racing area.

Recurrent Airway Obstruction (RAO)

Article By Dr. Steve Fisch, DVM

The majority of RAO cases are the result of hypersensitivity in the lungs to inhaled allergens. The most common antigens are dust and molds. Periodic bronchoconstriction will cause an accumulation of mucus and neutrophils. Most of these cases are in horses kept in barns. There is a similar condition in the southern part of the United States that is called summer pasture associated obstructive disease. The condition in these horses usually improves when the horse is stabled because it is usually caused by certain grasses and their seed heads.

Recurrent airway obstruction, otherwise known as heaves, chronic obstructive lung disease, chronic airway disease, etc. is a common respiratory disease which shows signs of bronchospasm, mucous production and an accumulation of cells called neutrophils which indicate infection or inflammation. The main indicator of this disease is a recurrent cough. This cough may express itself as anything from a one or two coughs as the horse starts working to a horse that spends most of the day coughing. The more extreme cases exhibit respiratory difficulty.

ABOVE: The most common antigens are dust and molds. Periodic bronchoconstriction will cause an accumulation of mucus and neutrophils. Most of these cases are in horses kept in barns.

Besides a chronic cough of varying degrees, other signs include nasal discharge and labored expiration of air. Horses with severe cases will have “heave lines”. The heave lines are actually hypertrophied abdominal muscles which assist in pushing air out of the lungs. The reason the lungs need assistance in getting the air out of the lungs versus into the lungs such as in cases of pneumonia, is that the bronchioles are swollen to such an extent that the air is trapped in the bronchioles and alveoli where the exchange of oxygen takes place. The more advanced cases will exhibit flared nostrils and increased respiratory rates. When the lungs are listened to the veterinarian will hear expiratory wheezes in the lungs and there may be a rattle in the trachea from excess mucous. Some horses end up spending so much energy breathing that they actually lose weight. Blood work will many times

be normal u n l e s s there is a secondary bacterial infection. If the case has been fairly long ABOVE: Very visible “heave line.” standing, there will many times be a secondary bacterial infection and that infection will need to be treated with the appropriate antibiotics. The diagnosis is many times based on clinical signs and history of the horse. The most accurate way to diagnose RAO is with bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL). Certain cells such as neutrophils and eosinophils in the BAL are indicators of RAO. A BAL is fairly easy to perform. A special tube is inserted into the lungs and 60 to 200 mls of sterile lactated ringers is infused into the lungs. When the horse coughs the fluid back up it is collected in

The fluid is cultured and the horse is treated with the appropriate antibiotics. Other ways to add to the diagnostic data are thoracic radiographs and ultrasound. However these diagnostic modalities greatly add to the expense and are probably less valuable than history, physical exam and a BAL. The most important treatment by far for RAO is to manage the environment. Many horses will respond very favorably to merely decreasing the amount of mold and dust in the environment. Make sure the shavings are clean and dust free. Round bales can be ABOVE: This is a photo of the division of the bronchi deep in the lungs. major culprits in creating A small amount of mucous is shown. RAO horses. Round bales BELOW: A severe amount of mucous in the trachea. that get any amount of mold in them at all require the horse to put his head directly into the mold and dust and breathe them into his lungs. Hay should be free of dust and if need be the hay should be watered down before feeding. Grain should also be dust free and soaked if needed. Pastures should be kept mowed and as free of weeds and grass that is seeding out as possible. the same tube and evaluated microscopically. This fluid can be cultured but the better way to culture the lungs is with a transtracheal wash (TTW). A TTW is a little more invasive than a BAL because it requires that a small incision be made into the trachea. However the fluid that is obtained is more accurate for culture for infection as it doesn’t pass through the nose but comes straight from the trachea. It is performed with a small amount of sterile fluid being infused into the lungs and collecting what the horse coughs up similar to the BAL.

corticosteroids have the negative side affect of suppressing the immune system and being a possible cause of laminitis. Clenbuterol is expensive and can cause high heart rates and sweating when given at high doses. It is a good bronchodilator however and does not have laminitis causing properties. The aerosol corticosteroids work well in many cases but they require treatment every 4 to 12hours. They are normally effective in mild to moderate cases of RAO and can be used along with systemic therapy in more severe cases. Due to the low bioavailability the aerosolized corticosteroid have less potential for adrenal gland suppression. There are different types of aerosolized corticosteroids so it is good to discuss these with your equine veterinarian and decide which one will work best in your situation. There will usually be a response with most of these treatments within 24 hours but all treatments should be based on an accurate diagnosis and examination by your equine veterinarian. As always an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Always keep your barn, feed and hay as dust free as possible. Early and accurate diagnosis is always better than a delayed diagnosis and treatment. If RAO has gone on in the lungs for some time, the damage and fibrosis in the lungs may be irreversible. RAO is like a snowball. The longer it goes untreated the worse it gets and the more irreversible it becomes. Whenever you have the first inkling that your horse has a respiratory problem, always get it checked out by your equine veterinarian. The initial stages of RAO can prevent a horse from performing to his maximum ability. The advanced stages may prevent him from living.

There are a few treatments for RAO including acupuncture, systemic corticosteroids, clenbuterol, and some aerosolized corticosteroids Stephen D. Fisch, DVM have been used successfully to treat RAO. The weather is hot; July means summer is in full swing & that looking great & keeping cool are both must dos. The solution? Sheer & flowing dresses & skirts paired with your favorite cowboy boots (as always). Here are some of my favorite looks from Polyvore. Up first; brown, turquoise & white. The boots are Ariat, any white cotton dress with do & I paired it with accessories from Double J Saddlery & Crow’s Nest Trading Post.

We started out in the hide room, talk about overwhelming; the colors, the texture, piping, not to mention the fabulous smell of leather. This is where the boot making process begins.

Shorts N Boots

Shorts are hit or miss when wearing them with cowboy boots but I picked a nice dark pair & matched it up with a bright fringe bag & loud floral accessories. Those boots are Old Gringo & to die for. Tip if you are going to wear your short shorts with boots try pairing them with a looser top, it tones down & gives you a classier look. Page 36

Competitors are categorized into six levels from 1 to 6, for Cowboys, Cowgirls and Seniors. The classification system is based upon performance of the competitor who earns class wins. All class wins at competitions are counted toward changing classifications if all the prerequisites are met. A #1 Class competitor is an entry-level competitor, to move up to a Class #2 a competitor must earn 4 wins. For a win to qualify there much be at least three #1 competitors within the #1 division at the match. Each class has separate requirements. Cowgirl Beth Brown from Lawrenceburg, Kentucky captured her 4th win on Sunday moving her up to a Cowgirl #2! Beth was presented a

Rodeo News from the

Indiana High School Rodeo Association

Riding for a Cause

For me, one of the best perks of any rodeo happens when we have an amazing audience. When the ticket line is overflowing, and the sounds of the crowd become the commentary for each run, you know it can’t get much better than that! The crowd is there for you, to see your talents and accomplishments. But what if you were to rodeo for a bigger cause, like helping someone in need, or for an organization that benefits others? This is exactly what the Indiana High School Rodeo Association did at our Boone County rodeo the weekend of June 9 and 10, 2012. At this rodeo our association partners with another not-for-profit organization called The ARC of Greater Boone County. The ARC of Greater Boone County is an organization that helps adults with disabilities accomplish things like finding jobs, housing, and things in life that most of us take for granted. This organization has helped so many disabled people, whom without this program would be far from where they are today. For three years now the IHSRA and ARC have partnered for this rodeo, and split the profits. Each year the crowd has doubled for this event! For example this year our ticket count was almost 2,000 more than last year! We are all excited to see how much it grows next year, and the year following.

Page 42

One thing we do every year for the clients in the ARC program is our “VIP rodeo.” At the “VIP rodeo” we show the disabled people the behind the scenes aspects of the rodeo. We teach them how to rope, they get autographs from our queen, they get to see the bulls and the bull riders, and even get to pet some of the competing horses. This is such an

IHSRA NEWS exciting time for all of the clients! It warms my heart to see such a small thing to us, make the day of those who truly appreciate it! We added another not-for-profit group to the rodeo this year! The Best Buddies from Lebanon High School came and helped work at the gate. These teens with disabilities and their parents will get a percentage of the monies taken in at the gate to help fund their programs too! So, I look forward to next year’s Boone County Rodeo Bash where once again, we can help those in need, and rodeo for a bigger cause!

Lets rope some Goats!!

In the IHSRA, we are always looking for new and interesting ways to raise funds for things like our Scholarship foundation. At our Lebanon rodeo we had what might have been the most fun way to fundraise in IHSRA history! Thanks to J-S goat roping productions (Jay Musselman and Strand Barricklow), the first annual Scholarship Goat Roping was born! Saturday afternoon contestants and parents, friends, family, and common on lookers joined in on the fun. The goat roping was a success and a good donation was added to the foundation. Memories were made while also helping a great cause for the graduating seniors in IHSRA!

It’s a Wrap!

Looking back at the weekend of the Boone County Rodeo Bash, it is easy to see that it was a success. The crowd numbered near 3,000, and that was not including the number of people standing around the outside when seats ran out! The success for the weekend was not just counted by the number of tickets sold, but by the smiling cowboys and cowgirls I saw from behind the arena. The talent demonstrated at this rodeo was fantastic! Many people don’t realize how much blood, sweat, and tears are put into a thriving rodeo like this one. From behind the scenes there are many hours put into making the rodeo run from every aspect. Not only did the IHSRA work hard, but Marcia Clutter, Community Relations Director for ARC and others from The ARC of Greater Boone County have worked for this rodeo each year. This rodeo was a great example of how two not-for-profits can join together for a great cause.

Top: Action from the goat roping that benefited the scholarship fund; Bottom: Average Winners: (left to right) Coleman Rude, Strand Barricklow, Sarah Schneider, Cord Barricklow, Korri Allen, and Jessie Hoagland

The cowboys, cowgirls and alumni of the IHSRA also had many amazing runs at this rodeo! The times and scores were close, but in the end the average winners were chosen, and buckles were taken. Lubrisyn, a national sponsor of the NHSRA also donated certificates for free Lubrisyn to the average winners! Congratulations to the following average winners: Sarah Schnieder; Breakaway Roping, Coleman Rude; Bull Riding, Cord Barricklow; Calf Roping, Jesse Hoagland; Goat Tying, Jesse Hoagland; Pole Bending, Cord and Strand Barricklow; Team Roping, Cord Barricklow; Steer Wrestling, and Korri Allen; Barrel Racing.

The Faces Say it All

As this article is being put together, our Cinch Jr. High Division families are traveling to the Jr. High Division National Finals in Gallup, New Mexico. Every year families get together and make the trip across the country, making memories along the way. These families are also there for each other if one family has truck or trailer problems. Our

rodeo families that are traveling together all stop and do what they can to get a truck or trailer back on the road in order to make sure all of the kids make the check in deadline. The stories and memories made getting there and back are often as action filled as the kid’s memories of their rides and runs at the finals. This year the trip is going pretty smooth and we wish all of the families a safe trip and an unbelievable experience at the finals. Everyone at home in Indiana is excited to hear how our kids do and hope to get the chance to watch them compete on the webcast. Tune in next month for the exciting update of the National Finals Trip. A great big Thank You goes out to the Paul and Dorene Lloyd family as well as the Dale and Caren Thomas family for all of their hard work in hosting the La Porte IJRA rodeo in June. What a great rodeo. Thank you David Morris for leading our families in Cowboy Church on Sunday morning and the Petro, Yadon and Morris families for providing the opportunity for Jr. Cowboy Church on Saturday night after the performance. Many of the kids commented on what a great night it was. Another big Thank You goes out to Lora Swan and her family for offer-

IJRA News ing to take on the Preschool Rodeo. For anyone who has seen the preschoolers during the break on Saturday, you know how important it is to them and provides a great opportunity for the younger kids to build their skills before their first year in K-1-2. During the break between slack and performance on Saturday we discussed the many opportunities for families to volunteer to make our State Finals in August a memorable one for all of the families involved. Anyone interested in helping with the Buckle Ceremony/Dance, 8th Grade Graduation, IJRA Princess Contest, or in any other way, please contact Tamara Whitten or Rachel Thomas. During this meeting we also discussed adding a K-1-2 and 3-4-5 age division to the IJRA Princess Contest next season. A committee will be formed to help out to make this opportunity a great experience for everyone. Anyone interested in becoming part of the committee, please let Caren Thomas know and she can pass on the names to the next IJRA Princess Family. Our group also discussed the open announcer’s position that we will have next season. Jack talked a little about what it takes to be able to do the job and we all realized that our open position will need a great person to meet the challenge. We were all excited when John Petro was kind enough to accept the challenge after being encourage by quite a few families. We are excited to see John able to learn the ropes from someone who has filled our announcer boots for many years.

CHRISTIAN COWBOY COLLECTION

w/ Christa Conway

They Have To Do It On Their Own

For those of you out there reading the title of this month’s Christian Cowboy Collection who have kids.....you get it.....I know. I have kids and I cannot tell you the times when I was trying to show them something or tell them something - either to do OR not to do - and they just couldn’t understand why. They had to try it their way before they could figure out what I had been trying to explain all along. My little girl is very independent. She has been telling me, “I can do it by myself” since she was old enough to speak the words. Most generally it has to do with horses - “I can lead him by myself,” “I can brush him by myself,” or “I can clean his feet out by myself.” I almost always let her try. Of course there are some things that could get her hurt and I have to overrule her independence until she is older. She may object, but I am the mom. But, there are some things in life that we all have to do on our own. We have decisions to make as we grow from children to adults and throughout our life. There will certain times when advice may help, but the decisions and choices we make are up to us and no one else. Just like my daughter.....she decided one day to saddle her horse by herself. She had watched us time and again and wanted to try it on her own. What did I do? I let her try. She was never going to learn whether she could (or couldn’t -yet) achieve her goal. She had to learn on that her own. I could have told her “no” and that she was too little or she wasn’t strong enough to get the saddle up there. I chose to let her try and when she needed help, I taught her how to use her head (and the wall) to get that saddle on her horse. She did it too! If she hadn’t made the decision to saddle her horse that day, she probably wouldn’t have achieved her goal as quickly as she did. She had made her mind up on her own. Of course, I was there for support and had been “talking her through” the process each time I had saddled him for her which gave her the knowledge she needed to step out on her own. As Christians that is what we are supposed to be doing for our friends and family who don’t know Jesus. We are supposed to be walking the walk and setting the example so that when they decide to that they are ready to try it for themselves, they have the information and they also know they have the support. After all, accepting salvation is not something we can do for anyone else. It is one decision

Page 46

that has to be made between a person and God. Oh, how many times I have been in church when our pastor is having an altar call and I just know there is someone there on the verge of turning their life over to God. I have wanted to grab them and lead them to that altar and tell them, “Don’t you know how easy it is? Don’t you know what you are missing? Now just kneel down and do it!” But, of course, I cannot make that decision for anyone but myself. Praise God, I have. I am so thankful that I finally “did it by myself.” For those who are putting it off for whatever reason, God loves you! Jesus died for you. It doesn’t matter what is in your past or even what is going on today. Once you give your heart to Him and accept his mercy, love, grace and salvation....He will help you through whatever it is you are facing.

The hard part for those around you who know you need Jesus is waiting on you to make the decision. You see, Jesus is standing there knocking at the door to your heart and your friends and family cannot answer the door for you.....you have to make a decision and answer that door for yourself. Revelation 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. My prayer is that you answer the knock at the door very soon! Until next month.... Don’t put it off...... Happy Trails & God Bless! Christa

B.L. AND THE DIRTY DOG He had been known as B L Bad Luck was all he had A harlot for a mom Sam the drifter was his dad

The place got purty quite When B L stood to his feet The stranger said hey friend Would you like to eat

Months had pasted by No one had seen B L Most folks didn’t miss him Especially the horrible smell

That stranger that fed me Well he saved me too And here the good news He’ll do it for all of you

He’d been workin` in town At the Dirty Dog saloon Folks there laughed at him Said he was crazy as a loon

B L looked at the floor Mumbled sir I’m broke I know I’m just a bum But that’s a sorry joke

Then one wild night At the Dirty Dog saloon The boy’s from the Triple 6 Were hallowin` at the moon

I know ya’ll love this place You called the Dirty Dog But can I be honest It smells like a filthy hog

B L had lived on slop Yep he smelt like a skunk Most folks let him be They thought he was a drunk

If you’ll come with me The stranger replied I’ll feed you all your days And I’ve never lied

A stranger come walkin` in He looked kinda like B L But was all cleaned up And he didn’t smell

One night at the Dirty Dog While cleanin` blood off floor B L seen a pair of sandals Comin` through the door

B L followed him out Leaving the Dirty Dog Lookin` like a bum And smellin` like a hog

The place got deadly silent quiet When he said It’ me B L Thought ya’ll like to know I’m not headed for hell

Mark 5: 1-19 Howbeit Jesus suffered him not, but saith unto him, Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee.

One Last (& most important) thought… Salvation is a gift and a choice......

Read past issues of our Christian Cowboy Collection and the Christian Barrel Racer’s Newsletter at the website below!

Jesus died on the cross as the final sacrifice. When He was resurrected on the 3rd day, he defeated Satan for us. All we have to do is believe that He beat death and acknowledge it with our words. If we believe that and accept Him as our personal savior…we are promised eternal life with Him in Heaven. You can’t earn your way into Heaven; you have to believe your way there. So many people think they “aren’t good enough” to get to Heaven… But… Salvation is a GIFT from God and you don’t earn a gift. Gifts are something someone gives to you and for the gift to be yours, you have to accept it. All we have to do is accept that wonderful gift. I know I have…won’t you? But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. Romans 5:15

For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Romans 10: 9-10

ITOBA NEWS - Indiana Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association

ITOBA News: July In-Training Sale Canceled Many people may have already heard that the ITOBA In-Training Sale, scheduled to be held in July, was unfortunately canceled this year. It was certainly a difficult decision for the Board Members to arrive at, but in the end it seemed the sale would have been counterproductive for both buyers and sellers at this time. Several factors that influenced this decision included a lack of entries, as well as constructive criticisms of the sale format from the past. The Board Members deliberated extensively and have decided to focus their efforts on offering a new and improved sale next year by incorporating some of the suggestions they have received. For example, it has been suggested that ITOBA sponsor a stakes race restricted to only horses sold through the sale, that the actual date of the sale be moved, and that certain logistics of the sale itself be modified to create a better environment for both buyers and sellers. These are just a few potential changes being discussed and implemented. So, it is with sincere regret that the sale had to be canceled this year, however, ITOBA is now poised for the In-Training Sale to be a stronger, more productive venue for both buyers and sellers in the future. We look forward to seeing you there next year!

Mystery of the Month

his month’s mystery cowboy picture came to us along with a letter (which we will print a portion of after our mystery is solved.) The cowboy shown here was about 19 years old and the horse shown is one that was ridden by several others from around the same location. In order to not give too much away we will leave it at that, except to say that there were several cowboys from the same area as the fellow shown here. According to the letter we received (and I can testify to this - I witnessed many of them compete in person) there was a concentration of some tough barrel racers within five miles of one another that vied for the winner’s circle at the saddle club where they were all members....as well as shows across the state. If you can correctly identify our cowboy and his horse, include a year and maybe even a location....and give us as much information as possible....you can win your choice of a one year subscription to The Horse Resource, a “Horsey Hat” or a “Horsey-T.”

Please send us your photos from the past....we’d like to use them in our Mystery of the Month. Horses, people, events, etc... Send via email to: thehorseresource@msn.com or mail to The Horse Resource 12601 S CR 200 W Muncie, IN 47302 We will return your original photos to you.

We Have Winners!

Our winner for the May Mystery’s group of mystery cowgirls is Roberta Ancil of Marion, Indiana. She knew the cowgirls were from the 1968 GBRA and their names (we hope we’ve spelled them correctly) are as follows: Front (L to R): Jamie Thompson, Jeanette Smith, Nikki Fincher, Back: Bunnie Keeser, Vickie Duke, Jody Maddox, Pam Mack, Pad Maddox, Tammy Bolander and Jamie Ritz. These ladies were on the 1st team of Indiana girls barrel racers to compete at the Match Race in Ohio. Taylor Evans also named all of the ladies correctly. Our June Mystery cowboy was George Knapp riding his great pole bending horse, Elmo. George and Elmo tore up the pole bendings around the Midwest in the 80s. This picture was taken at Bo-San-Bo Arena in Paragon, Indiana approximately 1980. Our winner this month was Clark Jones of Crawfordsville, Indiana. Clark chose a hat for his prize. Tammy Roberts also knew the mystery cowboy. Congrats to our winners!

Do You Still Like Playing? Help Us Out..... We are running low on photos.....Please send us your older photos of horsemen and women (and kids) that are still active in the horse business today. Or if you have pictures of a well known horse or event....that will mix things up a bit. We’re up for some new mysterys if you are!! Keep sending us those photos!! Send via email to thehorseresource@msn.com or mail to 12601 S CR 200 W Muncie, IN 47302 Page 59
