ummer shows are well under way now! If you have been able to avoid rain outs and had some fun on horseback, that is great! I have actually been to a few shows myself and have fared pretty well considering the limited amount of riding we were able to do this spring. Most importantly, we’ve had a great time with family and friends. I hope you have as well. This month we are featuring some beautiful pictures from Steve Heuertz and his visit to Churchill Downs this past May for the 140th running of the Kentucky Derby. With technology the way it is these days, you should know the results, but it is always nice to walk through the experience in such vivid pictures. If you haven’t made a trip out to witness the excitement of live racing at Indiana Grand in Shelbyville yet this year, there is still time! Remember, the Quarter Horses and Thoroughbreds will run at Indiana Grand throughout the summer and most of the fall. Maybe we’ll see you there! Until next month.....dodge those raindrops, soak up that sun...... and remember to count your blessings on horseback! God Bless and Ride Safe, Christa Conway

A Little “Barrel Talk”

If any of you have ever visited “Barrel Talk” or the other forums on BarrelHorseWorld.com, then you’ll have an idea of what to expect here. If you are not familiar with this “on-line hot spot,” be prepared to read many interesting comments from other people in the horse world. We will try to include topics that will be helpful and/or meaningful to our readers. Look for answers to questions you may find yourself asking, opinions on supplements and feed, experience with health issues and the remedies that others have found to be helpful. The list goes on and on, just like the list of topics you will find on www.barrelhorseworld.com.

Alfalfa Cube vs Beet Pulp Fancy Lass - Posted 2014-06-16 Which one is better for putting weight on ? Which one would be better for an older horse who can chew hay but is starting to lose some teeth .. I have both products in my barn . I used beet pulp last winter & it really put the weight on. I just started using alfalfa cubes on my hard keeping mare .. only bc she decided she didnt like the beet pulp anymore .. So I was just wondering which one people liked better ! Thanks! BamaCanChaser Beet pulp roxieannie Third option, Renew Gold,,,,,,With alfalfa and or cubes wyoming barrel racer I mix it. The beet pellets I soak just look so plain and ickky. The smell is blah so I add a few alfalfa pellets and soak together. So far they love it. I kept an old gelding of my husband’s alive on beet and alfalfa pellets soaked with some oats and Purina Amplify. He looked amazing for his final 8 or so yrs. He passed on Easter at 28yrs old. I give my pony a little bit soaked and add ADM SeniorGLO to his. Like 2 lbs. He’s picking up. He is starting to get some loose teeth. Vets figure him to be in his late 20’s. lindseylou2290 Mix ‘em. :) Fancy Lass Thanks guys , keep the opinions com-

ing ! My younger mare doesn’t like the beet pulp , so I can’t mix hers :/ she gets 3 lbs a day of the alfalfa cubes . The older horse would probably eat it mixed.. He is currently getting 2 lbs a day of beet pulp along with his ADM seniorGLO & grass hay . How many lbs of alfalfa cubes would you add with his beet pulp ? I’d like to just have them all on beet pulp .. I find it easier to soak & deal with .. But the princess won’t eat it anymore .. SG. Both. I prefer Beet Pulp though ChasingCans04 Rice bran pellets put the weight on without any crazy behavior. CowgirlLindz I mix both. I started with beet pulp then figured I was already soaking it so why not toss in some cubes. The cubes I get are like 1/2 alfalfa 1/2 timothy.

Nevertooold I just recently cut way back on the Beet Pulp because he was leaving it. Fancy Lass Ok thanks! Thats good to know :) she’s probably just full then .. SG. You love rice bran or your horse does If your horse wont’ eat it then your horse is telling you something. Personally I am not a rice bran fan Beet pulp is a heavy fiber product in being so it produces heat in the gut from being broken down. I only feed beet pulp at night in the summer and about 1/2 of what they get in the winter because they don’t need the “warmth” from it Fancy Lass Gotcha ;) this makes perfect sense ! Ill just get her to eat what I can .. But it’s not much lol

Nevertooold I would also give both.

SG. You are welcome

sophiebelle I feed my senior horses both alfalfa cubes (soaked) and beet pulp (soaked) + rice bran mixed in their senior feed. It makes a nice slurp for them and we laugh watching them lick their bowls. They are plump and healthy.

phillyincal My old mare colicked bad last August and probably dropped 100 pounds. I never thought I’d get the weight back on her because she is 35 years old. Luckily she has all her teeth so that helps a great deal. I free feed her alfalfa hay and two times a day I give her a big bucket of mush made up of one cup soaked beet pulp, three large scoops of all in one (also called alfalfa molasses) and three scoops of equine senior. This seems to be the perfect recipe for her right now, but I frequently have to make subtle changes adding more beet pulp or less grain etc. She is happy to let me

Fancy Lass I love rice bran too! But of course my dumb mare won’t eat that either .. She’s soo aggravating .. Her adm seniorGLO is about all she wants ! She used to absolutely love beet pulp in the winter.. And now doesn’t want it .. Anyone ever had one not eat it in the summer time ?

know what she’s feels like eating :-) Edited to add she looks really really good considering her age and everything she’s been through. I give a lot of credit to the best pulp as that seems to be her favorite! SuckerForHorses Something to consider regarding the horse leaving beet pulp now that it’s warmer out - is it possible that you are soaking it too long, and its getting rancid before you feed it? Especially in the hot months, beet pulp can go bad quickly. She may be turning up her nose because it smells off. Some things worth mentioning when comparing the two: Alfalfa cubes are considered long stem forage, so can directly replace hay in it’s entirety if you needed to do so. While beet pulp is highly digestible fiber, it’s not considered long stem forage(and neither are the alfalfa pellets). However, many toothless horses have lived on a diet comprised only of beet pulp and senior feed. In terms of calories per pound, they are quite similar. Of course the exact calories/lb depends on the brand, but generally beet pulp is around 900-1000 calories/lb, and alfalfa is also right around 900-1000 calories/lb. So really, in terms of calories, they are similar. If your mare will eat alfalfa cubes, just make sure you feed her the same amount (by weight) that you were feeding the beet pulp in order to keep her in the same shape.

Flys No Mystery, Hit an Awesome High surprise at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – May 17, 2014 – Two very competitive Quarter Horse allowance races were contested at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino Saturday, May 17 featuring an all-star cast in each event. Many horses in both fields were former stakes winners, but it was Flys No Mystery and rider Troy Crissup who attacked late and surprised them all, winning the first Quarter Horse race of the night in the $20,000 350-yard allowance. Breaking from post eight, Flys No Mystery was not in contention early. It took several strides for the sorrel gelding to get into top gear, but when he did, he flew down the stretch, grabbing the victory by a margin of a neck for trainer Ron Raper and owner Mark Michel. This Lion Roars and Jose Beltran finished second followed by Chilled Six Pack and Shanley Jackson for third. It was the first race of the year for Flys No Mystery, who won three of seven starts last season. The Indiana-bred son of Fly Jess Fly is nearing the $100,000 mark in career earnings. The race marked the first time that Troy Crissup had been aboard the gelding. Flys No Mystery was overlooked by bettors, paying $19.60, $12.00 and $7.00 across the board. In the second allowance event of the night, another upset occurred as Hit an Awesome High and Beltran came roaring into the picture on the outside to defeat heavily favored Tinys First Pepsi and Rodney Prescott. Late in the 350 yard contest, it looked as if Tinys First Pepsi would return to his winning ways, but he could not defend his top spot against Hit an Awesome High in a time of :17.940 seconds. Tinys First Pepsi finished second followed by Sum Fun For Magic and Harold Collins for third. Hit an Awesome High paid $22.60, $5.00 and $4.80 across the board in the $20,000 allowance event for registered Indiana breds. It was also the first trip aboard Hit an Awesome High for Beltran. Owned by Patti Marshall and trained by Tony Cunningham of Michigan, Hit an Awesome High completed his 2013 season with a win. Coupled with this year’s winning debut, he is now on a two-race win streak. The six-year-old brown gelding has six wins in 26 career starts and pushed his career earnings over the $100,000 milestone. Hit an Awesome High was bred in the state of Indiana by First Moon Farms.

Achieve The Speed fastest in Born Runner Classic Trials at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – May 30, 2014 – Achieve the Speed lived up to his name by winning the first of two trials for the Born Runner Classic in a time of :20.186 seconds. The three-year-old Indiana-bred will be one of 10 horses that will return for the $100,000 final set for Saturday, June 14 at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino. It was a clean break for all eight horses in the first $5,000 trial with Free Kittens and Julie Veltman getting the early attention from the outside post. However, as the 400-yard dash unfolded, it was evident that Achieve the Speed, with rider Ben Creed aboard, would be a factor at the end. With

long strides, the gelding moved out in front of the competition to claim the top spot, one and one-quarter lengths ahead of Bugs Dash of Honey and Victor Olivo, who rallied home in second. Its Chilly and Juan Guerrero maintained positioning along the inside for third. “This is the type of horse that you ride like a Thoroughbred,” said Creed. “He has such a long stride and covers a lot of ground. Last time out, which was his first start of the year, he needed a mind refresher. He was physically capable, but he just needed to get his mind refreshed. He knows what to do now.” Creed rode Achieve the Speed a few starts last season, winning back to back races at Indiana Grand, including the $25,000 Speed Sale Stakes. He now has earned nearly $30,000 for owner-trainer Stephanie Rickly, who is also the breeder. Creed is a graduate of the first class from Chris McCarron’s North American Racing Academy, a jockey school held at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Ky. The Taylorsville, Ky. resident did not have a background in racing and after a year and a half in the school, graduated and began his career as a rider. He began his apprenticeship with Thoroughbreds in Kentucky in 2008, including the Indiana tracks in his regular circuit. He won his first career race at Indiana Grand. Today, he rides both Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses in the Midwest. Creed and Rickly teamed up for a second shot to advance to the $100,000 final in the evening’s other trial with Whata Cool Cat, but they did not qualify for the final. The trials were the featured event of 10 Quarter Horse races held at Indiana Grand. The program marked the first of six that are reserved for only Quarter Horse racing during the 2014 season.

News WH Design by Dash wins Born Runner Classic Trial at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino Photo by Linscott Photography

Starting from post seven in the eight-horse lineup, WH Design By Dash was a factor from the start, getting a quick jump on his competition out of the gate. The hot pink blinkers on the three-year-old Indiana-bred son of Brimmstone were in front nearly every step of the way in the 400-yard dash, taking Olivo across the wire with an easy win by three-quarters of a length in a time of :20.311. Beach Meter and Christian Esqueda tracked in second followed by Chilled Six Pack and Shanley Jackson for third. “I think he (WH Design by Dash) has matured since last year,” said Olivo. “Before he didn’t break well and he would shy from the people on the rail. He was sharper tonight out of the gate. I think he will be tough in the final.” With the exception of his first start last season, Olivo has been aboard for all of WH Design By Dash’s starts. He is owned by Julia Martin and trained by her husband, Paul. The trial was the second win in 10 career starts for WH Design by Dash, who has only been worse than third once in his career. He bumped his career earnings to more than $70,000 with the win.

SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – May 30, 2014 – WH Design By Dash and Victor Olivo made their first start of 2014 look easy, taking home the title in one of two $5,000 Born Runner Classic trials at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino Friday, May 30. The trials were two of 10 races on the program dedicated to Quarter Horses and drew a large crowd that was trackside to witness the event.

“Last year, the distance for two-year-olds was shorter,” said Paul Martin. “He was right there several times and would have won more at a longer distance. He finished up the year strong last year. He’s the type of horse that never has an off day. He’s never off his feed. We only gave him one work. He’s just one of those that is a great trainer. His half brother, WH Johnnie Boy Red, is the same way, so it might be a characteristic from that family.” WH Johnnie Boy Red has been a standout for the Martin Stable in Indiana. He has earned several wins, including the 2012 $130,700 Jaguar Rocket

Secret Miracle sets new track record for 400 yards at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino

SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – June 14, 2014 – Air Born Leader returned to his winning ways Saturday, June 14, taking home his fourth straight title in the $114,000 Born Runner Classic at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino. The win for the grey gelding was the 12th of his career and extended his hold as the all-time leading Indiana bred Quarter Horse with career earnings now in excess of $454,000.

SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – June 13, 2014 – Secret Miracle, with Gabriel Lagunes aboard, rallied home to win the $15,000 Quarter Horse Allowance Friday, June 13. Along with the victory, the three-year-old filly also scored a new track record for the 400-yard distance with a time of :19.684 seconds. Starting from post eight, Secret Miracle got a clean break and was a contender the entire dash. Moving into the center of the track, the Utah-bred daughter of No Secrets Here finished strong to earn the win and place her name in the record books at Indiana Grand. Secret Miracle finished a half length ahead of Indigo James and Yordanis Amaro while Eagle Illusion and jockey Julian Serrano finished third. Owned by Guadalupe Arevalo and trained by Julio Almanza, Secret Miracle was making her first start of 2014. All seven of her previous career starts have been contested over the Indiana Grand racetrack. She now has three wins in eight outings and boosted her career earnings to more than $25,000.

After a dull effort in the trials and a fourth place finish, Air Born Leader was the seventh quickest qualifier out of 10 for the Born Runner Classic Final. Now six-years-old, the son of Leader of the Class had struggled in only two starts of 2014. Last year, he scored three wins in eight outings, only missing the board once in those starts. “The last two times out were just out of character for him (Air Born Leader),” said Trainer Tom Mosley, Jr. “He felt good, but I could tell he just wasn’t happy. The last few days, I could tell a difference in him and I could tell he felt happy again.” Air Born Leader, with Indiana Grand’s all-time leading jockey Harold Collins aboard, had to be happy with their start. A clean break put the gelding in good positioning early on. The duo had a clear shot from post four in the center of the track. Air Born Leader led the field of 10 the entire 400-yard dash, fending off a late charge by race favorite Chilled Six Pack and 2014 Leading Jockey

News Shanley Jackson from the far outside. Air Born Leader held on to win by a head at the wire over Chilled Six Pack. Beach Meter and Christian Esqueda held tough along the inside to finish a neck back in third. The time of the race was :20.007 seconds, establishing a new stakes record for the Born Runner Classic. The race, which was in its fifth running, is named after a very successful sire in the state of Indiana, Born Runner. “We brought him (Born Runner) in to our farm in Carbon, Ind. from Oklahoma in 1988,” said CW Mullenix, owner of Born Runner. “He changed the scenery of Quarter Horse racing in the state of Indiana. I’m very touched with what the folks (Quarter Horse Racing Association of Indiana) have done in honor of him with this race. And, all five years the winners have been out of Born Runner mares, which makes it exceptionally nice.” Born Runner passed away several years ago. As a result, Mullenix did not replace him at his farm and now only has broodmares at his operation. Randy Thompson is the owner and breeder of Air Born Leader, whose dam, Air Born Jazz, has been an important part of his operation. Unfortunately, she passed away three years ago, so no future siblings will be coming along behind Air Born Leader. Thompson has been very active in Quarter Horse racing in the state of Indiana for more than a decade. He is the all-time leading owner at Indiana Grand and with his latest win from Air Born Leader, he surpassed $1 million in earnings as an owner. Thompson also saw something different in Air Born Leader the past two starts, but he had faith in Mosley that things would turn around.

noted that he is very strong and very focused when he comes to the paddock. The Mosley Stable credits Victor Deleon, his groom, for keeping him calm. Deleon walks him with two hands on the lead to keep him in check. Air Born Leader will most likely be back to defend his title in the Bob Woodward Memorial Stakes, scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 9. Prior to that date, there are several more Quarter Horse stakes on the docket at Indiana Grand. The second of six nights in 2014 dedicated to all Quarter Horse racing at Indiana Grand is slated for Saturday, July 5. Three stakes, the $25,000-added Leader of the Class Stakes, the $35,000-added Indiana Grand Classic and the $35,000-added Bradford Stakes will take place along with trials for the Jaguar Rocket Futurity and the Heartland Futurity, which will run finals on Saturday, July 26. The evening will be complemented by several activities, including fireworks following the racing program. Live Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing continues through Saturday, Nov. 1 offering racing Tuesday and Wednesday at 2:05 p.m. with Friday and Saturday action beginning at 5:05 p.m. Thursday racing will be added at 2:05 p.m. July 17. Owners can now Provide Veterinary Records on Horse Racing Reform Website Photo by Linscott Photography

Owners who voluntarily pledge to make their horse’s veterinary records public can now upload those records to a page hosted by horseracingreform.org, The Jockey Club announced today. After an owner creates an account and verifies their email address, they will be able to upload a horse’s veterinary records through the “Transparency” link on the website. By creating an account, an owner’s name will immediately be added to the list of those who have decided to make public their horses’ veterinary records.

“He (Air Born Leader) just wasn’t himself in his two previous races this year,” said Thompson. “But he proved he could turn it around and on the big day (Born Runner Classic) he showed up.” Air Born Leader was the fourth pick on the board, paying $12.60, $4.00 and $3.40 across the board. The gelding, who has a very unique running style with a low head carriage, is now 10 for 22 over Indiana Grand’s oval and the latest victory was his sixth career stakes win. “He (Air Born Leader) is a very easy horse to train and he’s all class,” said Mosley, Jr. “From the first time he ever ran, he had a unique way of running. I didn’t think I liked it at first until he became successful. Now, I don’t mind it at all.” Air Born Leader always appears calm and easy going. However, Mosley

“We wanted to provide an easy and efficient way for owners to voluntarily make their horses’ veterinary records available to the public,” said Matt Iuliano, executive vice president and executive director of The Jockey Club. “Increasing transparency into our sport is an important element of our continuing efforts to build customer confidence in horseracing. As a resource designed to advocate for medication reform, safety and integrity, the Horse Racing Reform website is the perfect vehicle to make this possible.” Owners can upload their horses’ records or request that an email be sent to the horse’s trainer, enabling the trainer to upload the horse’s records. “We were encouraged by the response from a number of prominent Thoroughbred owners and trainers who pledged to make available to the public veterinary records of horses competing in graded stakes races in the United States and Canada,” said Iuliano. “With just a few clicks, owners or their trainers may quickly upload their veterinary records. We hope to see continued growth and support of this important transparency initiative.”

News Veterinary records should include the 14-day period leading up to the day of the graded stakes race. To provide complete information, the records should be uploaded on the day of the race. The Jockey Club, founded in 1894 and dedicated to the improvement of Thoroughbred breeding and racing, is the breed registry for North American Thoroughbreds. In fulfillment of its mission, The Jockey Club, directly or through subsidiaries, provides support and leadership on a wide range of important industry initiatives, and it serves the information and technology needs of owners, breeders, media, fans and farms. It is a founding member of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association and the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities and the architect and sole funding source for America’s Best Racing, the broad-based fan development initiative for Thoroughbred racing.

Trainers Named for Ultimate X Showdown The second rendition of the Ultimate X Showdown, a competition that pairs barrel racing trainers from the across the United States with Thoroughbred horses freshly retired from the racetrack, has released the names of the finalists for this year’s competition. A 100-day test of horse training skill and racehorse acumen that culminates in a “showdown” on September 5, 2014, the Ultimate X Showdown was conceived by the founder of the non-profit organization, Dreaming of Three, after she learned that many off-track Thoroughbreds of small stature (under 16 hands) often have a harder time being placed when their racing careers are over. “Our mission is to increase the marketability of the off the track Thoroughbred in the western events, namely the speed events like barrel racing,” said Jacqueline. “Most of these smaller horses aren’t desirable for the traditional Thoroughbred disciplines like jumping or dressage, but they are perfect for what we want to do. We want to showcase their abilities in this competition and show the world that they can compete toe to toe with any other breed. ”

Nikki Egyd – California Lindsay Jensen – Minnesota Leisha Griffith – North Carolina Decotah Jackson -Texas Trainers will had until May 28 to select their off-track Thoroughbred with the competition officially beginning on May 28. During the following 100 days, their progress in turning their ex-racehorse mounts into finely tuned barrel racing competitors will be closely followed via blogs, social media, and the Ultimate X Showdown website. The final event, held at the Simmons Equestrian Center in Negley, Ohio, will consist of two segments; a judged free style portion and a timed barrel race. “A horse will give everything as long as you know when they are giving,” said selected trainer Jimbo Albritton from Florida. “ The Ultimate X Showdown is giving me a chance to give back to horses in general. It is the least I can do as a trainer to show my appreciation to the animals that have given me everything, and have had such an impact on my life” More information about the event can be found at http://www.ultimatexshowdown.com/ About Dreaming of Three: Dreaming of Three is a 501©3 non-profit organization dedicated to charitable fund raising through our passion of horses and rodeo. We raise funds for American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, St. Judes Children’s Hospital and several animal rescues. Whether you compete on your horse, rodeo, or leisurely trail ride, you can join us and make your riding more meaningful. Originally the name came from the Founder, Jackie Harris, deciding to donate her own winnings to the three charities after losing her step father to cancer and her father to heart disease through her passion of barrel racing, which consists of THREE barrels. Then, as time went by, it grew into so much more. More information on our missions and structure at www.dreamingofthree.org

This year’s competition drew 47 applications from 21 states and Canada. Five judges reviewed written applications, riding video and overall horsemanship to determine the final cut of 15 trainers. The selected trainers are: Lacey Tomasik – 2013 Champion, Pennsylvania Jandee Smart – California Sara Tharp – Montana Kelly Kelley – Illinois Doug Kerstetter – Pennsylvania Mike Rogers - Missouri Nicole Valeri – Pennsylvania Guy White - Virginia Penny Baker – Ohio Samantha Dilworth – British Columbia, Canada Jimbo Albritton – Florida

Fire Safety on the Farm – Reducing the Risk

arn fires are every horse owner’s worst nightmare, one that can bring significant emotional and economic loss. However, the sad fact is that many barn fires could have largely been prevented by applying a few basic principles. The most reliable approach to fire safety is to plan for the worst by having solid procedures in place for fire prevention and adhere to them daily. Education, awareness, and planning are key to minimizing the risk of fire, says Victor MacPherson, District Chief of the Adjala-Tosorontio Fire Department. “Barn fires still continue to happen though we try our best, as we are lacking the education connection with the property owner,” he says. “The reasons we encounter barn fires result from years of improper setup, poor maintenance and poor house cleaning.” Fire is caused when a “fuel” and “ignition” source meet. Hay, bedding, and wooden materials are common examples of fuel found on the farm, while improperly cured hay, electrical malfunctions, and carelessness with smoking are common sources of ignition. Practicing simple protection and prevention techniques will help keep these two elements from contact. Data released in 2012 by the Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management in Ontario indicated $57.6 million in losses in buildings classified under the National Farm Building Code in 2007, notes Ralph Snyder, Assistant District Chief of the Adjala-Tosorontio Fire Department. This represents a 67.4% increase over the previous year’s loss of $34.4 million due to fire. With the evolution toward large-scale farming and associated farm buildings increasing in value, the financial losses continue to climb. “When these large structures catch fire, they are more difficult to control and extinguish, resulting in greater financial losses to both the structure and its contents,” he adds. Electrical malfunctions are a primary ignition source for many fires including barns, advises Snyder. “Farm buildings can be at an increased risk because of the corrosive environment found in livestock barns,” he says. “This causes corrosion of exposed metal components [such as wires, connections, etc.], which creates increased resistance and heat at wiring connections. This can result in ignition of surrounding combustible materials. The Electrical Safety Authority has stringent requirements for installation of electrical equipment in animal confinement areas.” In order to offset any potential fire hazards, Snyder recommends having an annual electrical inspection done by a qualified electrician to check for signs of deterioration or corrosion and repair any issues that are found. In addition, all electrical wiring, switches, or plugs should be placed well out of a horse’s reach and covered in weather proof boxes or conduit. All light fixtures should be caged and approved for stable use. When not in use, electrical equipment should be unplugged and properly stored away. Special attention should be paid to water bucket heaters, as they continue to heat even when the water bucket is empty. This could result in the plastic melting and igniting stall bedding and hay. “In our experience, we find that barn fires seem to be more prevalent in cold weather conditions,” states MacPherson. “For example, the heating/ electrical system can be taxed pertaining to drinking water freezing and thawing, and allowing the watering buckets to run dry. This leaves the elements exposed causing bedding or other combustible material to ignite. We have also found that in the fall months, improper storage of fall

Make sure aisle ways and doorways are always kept clear and free of clutter. A halter and lead rope should be secured at each stall front in case of emergency removal of horses. crops contain too much moisture and spontaneous combustion occurs in the stored feed.”

Good Housekeeping Starts Now

MacPherson says the best way to combat stable fires is to identify all potential ignition sources and take the necessary steps to eliminate them. This starts with good housekeeping, which includes installing a fire detection system and keeping the system functional and operational by keeping the sensors clean and in good working order. “Depending on the value associated with your stable, a dry sprinkler system with the connection outside the barn for fire department connection, or an independent pump system, would be a valuable tool to stop the spread of fire,” he says. Other important housekeeping steps include keeping the stable clean and free of clutter such as cobwebs and dust, which are excellent fuel sources. Any loose hay or straw should be swept up and disposed of properly. The removal of potential combustible materials also includes the trimming of weeds, grasses and brush from around buildings and regular removal of rubbish. Equip all buildings with a minimum five pound ABC fire extinguisher at all exits and in any mechanical and feed rooms, and make sure employees know how to use one. Another important tip is to regularly maintain farm equipment and have it stored in a separate building. It is also recommended that hay and bed-

Page 17

News Ensure your laneways are accessible to heavy firefighting equipment and that there is a clear right-of-way for them to reach all your buildings. Access can be compromised by low hydro wires or overhanging tree branches.

ding be stored in a building separate from where the horses are kept or that it be restricted to a separate section of the stable separated by a firewall. Enforce a “No Smoking” policy in and around the facility and post signs prohibiting this where they can be easily seen. “We highly suggest that every stabled horse has a halter that fits hanging on their stall door with the lead rope attached,” he says. “Leather is preferable, as a nylon halter can melt in the heat. Consider marking each halter with glow-in-the-dark paint or attaching reflectors to assist during times of poor visibility.” MacPherson strongly recommends that farm owners prepare a site-specific fire safety plan, known as a “pre-plan.” This would include mapping out the location of where all animals are being housed, as well as the location of all emergency utility shutoffs, and identifying all buildings on the property and sources of water available, should firefighters require access to it. “Have a detailed fire plan, which includes listing the location of combustibles and where feed is stored, with a copy given to your local fire department for their pre-plans,” he says. This would greatly assist firefighters in familiarizing themselves with your property before a fire happens. Stable owners can consult with their local fire department for advice on preparing a pre-plan and obtain information on fire prevention. Most fire departments will visit your farm if invited and point out ways to minimize potential fuel sources on their property. This would be especially beneficial before one begins to renovate their stable or build a new facility.

Keep the Plan Prominent

There is no such thing as a fireproof building, and no matter how well you prepare, accidents can happen. Develop a fire emergency plan ahead of time, keep it readily accessible and practice the plan prior to any emergency, as these steps will assist in keeping you and your horses safe. In case of fire, it’s important to remain calm, call 911, and proceed with the emergency plan. Once the fire crew arrives, step aside, wait for direction, and let the professionals do what they’re trained to do. For further infor-

Page 18

mation on preparing an emergency plan, please refer to When Disaster Strikes, Plan to be Prepared. In case of an emergency, Snyder recommends that the stable’s physical address be posted in a prominent place, preferably by the phone should someone who is not familiar with the address be making the emergency 911 call. Also make sure that the address can be easily seen from both directions of the road in order to get the fastest response. “Always keep an open roadway around the perimeter of buildings for access by heavy firefighting equipment, and then keep it well-maintained so that it is accessible year around,” he says. Every stable user should have fire safety in mind. Plan ahead with fire prevention practices and have an up-to-date pre-plan on hand to help to reduce the risk of fire. “Education of fire prevention awareness is fundamental to both the property owner and hired hands,” says MacPherson. “Internet information from reputable sources such as universities and colleges of agriculture offer valuable information, as well as discussing any concerns with your local fire department.” Sign up for our free e-newsletter at EquineGuelph.ca which will deliver monthly welfare tips throughout 2014 and announce tools to aid all horse owners in carrying out their ‘Full-Circle-Responsibility’ to our beloved horses. “The Spirit Lives On”

ll of us have an idea from a very young age what our belief systems assure us will happen when we die. There are many belief systems out there, some very controversial. However, all of them acknowledge a life force fueled by a passion, and a “spirit” that forms the uniqueness we all have as individuals. Some people have such a strong presence that they literally light up a room when they walk in. This is a story of one of those beautiful flowers that always seemed in full bloom and was more vibrant and colorful than all the others. But like the flower her time here was limited and she of all people seemed at peace with that very thought. September 16th 2013 I am coming home from rodeoing in Canada, when around three in the morning I am overwhelmed with a strange feeling of sadness. I look out the window, up to the sky, and begin to cry, at that moment not knowing what was to come. Our driving shift is over around four in the morning, and I try to get some sleep. Nine ’o’clock I wake up to hear my phone ringing, I ignore it like always thinking I’ll call whoever it was back. The phone rings again, I shoot right up knowing something must be wrong, look at the screen and have ten missed calls. I call my stepmom, Janelle Green, back and I am told the news that Megan Stockstill, my uncle Talmadge’s Fiancée and part of our family, had passed away. I am in shock. Megan a beautiful 29 year old who had just given birth a week before to a beautiful and healthy baby boy was now gone. Megan was an amazing woman and dearly loved by everyone who knew her. She was as beautiful on the inside as she was on the outside and is truly missed, but one thing is certain, we are not going to let her be forgotten.

Page 21

Ben Corder

“The older generation of trainers or you can say veterans of the industry today are like extended family to one another.” Coffey said, “We see each other sometimes more than our family during the busy season. When Megan started dating Talmadge she became part of that extended family.” Coffey along with fellow barrel racer Leslie Willis wanted to do something. “This scholarship will not only keep Megan’s legacy alive but will give back to youth involved in the equine industry which is something that is unique because there isn’t a whole lot in scholarships available for kids who love rodeo or timed events,” Coffey said. Megan’s Memory Scholarship was created by a group of special women.

Megan was and still is an inspiration to me in that she lived each day to the fullest, shared her opinion and unique sense of humor with everyone, always found the bright side of things, was rarely down in the dumps, and was extremely outspoken about being a Christian and knowing where her spirit was going after death. She had a very matter of fact approach to how she felt and this was no different. She very plainly would say “I feel I won’t get old but I know where I’m going”. Never pushy or boastful, Megan demonstrated a true sense that life here on earth is a gift and meant to be appreciated, but above all our mission should be to have a positive profound influence on the people we are around especially the youngsters. When the shock of her death became a reality, it was amazing to see the support from the barrel racing community, a community that our family has been such a huge part of. Carol Ann Coffey, barrel racer and wife of futurity jockey Chris Coffey, shared a love for Megan like most of us, she was inspired by her life and her love.

Page 22

“Donations grew fast. I soon called Stacey Warner who made some phone calls and worked on getting some grant money. Stacey brought in Jordan Manley,” Coffey said. “Thank heavens for Jordan. She and her Dad located a 501c3 tax deductible memorial fund by the name of CHARITYSMITH. Megan’s Memory runs through them.” Manley brought onboard fellow barrel racer, Elan Brooks, and together they masterminded an online auction via Facebook. They auctioned everything from NFR tickets, jewelry, tack, breeding fees, registered puppies, and horse training services. They were overwhelmed by the generosity. Some other ladies that helped Coffey were Jonna Foster Winninger who helped her organize all the information on the computer, and K9s4cops founder Kristi Schiller offered her expertise in the area as well. In 2014 the Megan’s Memory Scholarship will be giving a total of $15,000 in scholarship money, $7,500 to one boy and one girl. There were 59 applicants from all over the United States, but two who stood out among the rest. Nineteen year old Ben Corder of Louisville, Kentucky and nineteen year old Brandi Korbe of Sumrall, Mississippi were chosen to receive the first Megan’s Memory Scholarship. Their essays defining a true champion were the best among the 59.

Between the Barrels w/Madeleine Green

Brandi Korbe

Megan’s Memory has set very large goals. The first goal is to raise enough money to guarantee 15 thousand dollars in scholarships for the next ten years. When that goal is met they want to expand the money and be able to guarantee more money and help more cowboys and cowgirls who want to pursue a greater education. All of the funding comes from kind donators and grants. If you are interested in making a donation you can visit megansmemory.org and click the donation button. If you are interested in applying for the scholarship the deadline is March 30th of each year. You must be a high school senior in good standing with a time event, barrel racing or rodeo association and plan to attend an accredited trade school, community, or university college. Through this scholarship Megan’s greater purpose is revealed and she would be proud and honored to see “Her Spirit Live On”.

Both Corder and Korbe share a love for horses and the sport of barrel racing like Megan. They both also understand what it means to be examples for the younger generation. “A good attitude is important and high expectations are needed to succeed,” Korbe said. “Younger people in our lives need to understand that if they work hard they can reach their goals.” “I hope that I will be able to donate or pay back some of the money that was given to me through the scholarship,” Corder said. One thing that we all can learn from Megan is to live each day as if it were our last, Corder and Korbe are using this scholarship to do just that. “If I’m living each day as if it were my last, I also want to live it as the day I’ll be remembered,” Corder said. “I believe everyone deserves to be a champion and to realize their dream,” Korbe said. “The Megan’s Memory Scholarship is helping me to realize my dreams and I want to do that for others in honor of Megan.”

Match Race Champions - Team Mars & Venus

Match Race

T

o say the 2014 IBRA Match Race was a close race is an understatement. Team “Mars and Venus” won the 3rd annual competition inching out the competition by only 3 points but they put on a stellar performance. Grant Patterson, Chris Coffey, Andy Wilks, Bubby Skimehorn and Melanie Crites each pocketed a smooth $559 for the win. The Match Race was ran in its traditional style awarding points equally to each division. First place in the divisions earned 10 points all the way down to the tenth place person who earned 1 point. With this set up riders of all divisions are valuable assets to the team. The winning team proved that diversity was a winning strategy. They had two riders in the 1D, two in the 3D and one in the 4D. One important aspect however was that they all five stayed clean in the short go! Four of the five team members on

team “Mars and Venus” were also on the highest scoring team in the qualifying round. In fact it seemed to be the consensus view that they would undoubtedly win the short go as well because they led the first round by 16 points! All in all it was a nail biter for those waiting on the results because there were 3 points between first and second place, only one point between second and third and so on. One person was probably not biting their nails too much though and that was Grant Patterson. Being on the Winning Match team was simply a bonus. Grant and Blue Ribbon Brownie had already ran the fastest time of the weekend in Saturdays open leaving only three other riders in the first division and the closest one was still nearly three tenths away. He earned $2000 for that run. Then he came back on Sunday to earn another $433 for winning the 1D with a rollover from the Match Race which he also led and earned $466 in. Collectively Grants weekend totaled $3458 between his two horses. The entire weekend was a great time with a lot of folks cheering just a little louder for their fellow team mates. That is what makes this one of my favorite events of the year. What normally is a stand alone event suddenly becomes a team sport. Ask the Vet wi t h Dr. Steve Fi s ch, DVM S tomach Stomach Ulcers ULCERS

Part 1

The first in a two part series on stomach ulcers in horses. This month we’ll find out how ulcers occur. Next month - Ulcer Treatment.

Equine gastric ulcer syndrome is a multifaceted health problem that is prevalent in 60 to 90 percent of adult horses. The percentage of horses affected depends on the location of the ulcer in the stomach, other health problems that the horse has at the same time, performance level, feeding routine, degree of confinement, personality of the horse with the ulcers and the personality of horses they are comingled with or near, and many other factors of management.

Stresses such as training, stall confinement, foaling (for both mare and baby) and hauling might lead to the release of steroids by the horse’s body, and because steroids counteract prostaglandin, a vicious cycle begins. The decrease in the production of prostaglandin leads to the breakdown of mucosal protective factors, which can lead to the development of ulcers. Exposure to acid is required for the glandular mucosa to ulcerate. However, if the mucosal protective factors are in place, the ulcerations might not occur. Nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs inhibit the production of prostaglandin E2, which leads to increased acid production, decreased mucosal blood flow and degradation of the bicarbonate-mucus barrier. There is evidence that the medication furosemide, or Salix, acts to increase gastric blood flow by increasing Dr. Steve Fisch production of prostaglandin E2 By and thereby protecting the stomach from ulceration.

What are they, and what are their implications on performance?

E

It is a common misconception that gastric ulcers are found only in stressed horses or horses in training. Just as with people, stress is relative to an individual horse. Other causes of EGUS are social regrouping, unfamiliar environments, weaning and lay-ups. In the Morning

In The Morning On the first morning … you existed without the nothingness. And You gave us light to see the absence of darkness. On the second morning … you existed without space. And You gave us sky as the canvas for sunrises and sunsets. On the third morning … you existed without borders. And You gave us land upon which we could stand. On the fourth morning … you existed without constellations. And You gave us the Sun, Moon and stars. On the fifth morning … you existed without other living creatures. And You gave us animals to admire and touch. On the sixth morning … you existed without relationships. And You gave us each other to know love.

He conceived and created. He spoke and the unconceivable became reality. His reality became the wonder around us. His will became what we will never understand. I sit quietly, coffee in hand, this morning. I listen in the darkness to what I cannot see. I wait for the light to come on a new day. In the world around me, I sense the presence of God. And it is good …. It is very, very good!

irst there was Aristides, next Vagrant. Not far after came Hindoo and Apollo. Donerail would eventually shock the world at tremendous odds and Regret became the first girl. Exterminator used it to catapult his illustrious career. Sir Barton took a step toward wearing the first crown and eventually Gallant Fox would become his worthy successor. There was also Omaha and War Admiral, Whirlaway and Count Fleet, Assault and the iron horse, Citation. Northern Dancer would later set the record, only to be broken by the incomparable, Secretariat. Seattle Slew, Affirmed and Spectacular Bid would round out a decade for the ages before Genuine Risk and Winning Colors gave two more wins for the ladies. Then came Go For Gin, Thunder Gulch, Silver Charm, Real Quiet and Charismatic. More recently, Monarchos almost equalled Secretariat, Funny Cide carried the hopes of his unlikely owners and Smarty Jones followed in the steps of Seattle Slew. Barbaro demolished his rivals and Street Sense became the first to complete the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile double. Big Brown would make his bid for a crown and Mine That Bird did his best impression of Donerail. Since then, there has been Super Saver, Animal Kingdom, I’ll Have Another and most recently, Orb. All together, there are 139 of them, each different from the next but bound together by the title, Kentucky Derby winner.

In the spring of 1955, a horse and boy boarded a train in California and traveled two thirds across the country. The boy, 18-year-old Art Sherman, slept in the same boxcar as his three-year-old companion, a thoroughbred racehorse named Swaps. Sherman was the exercise rider for the colt, and together they ventured toward Churchill Downs and a start in the Kentucky Derby. Awaiting their arrival was the race favorite, Nashua. While the Derby shaped as a matchup between the best from the East, Nashua, versus the best from the West, Swaps, many discounted the chances of Swaps believing the racing in California was lesser than that of the East.

Page 38

The 140th KENTUCKY DERBY

Nonetheless, Nashua and Swaps entered the Derby and were sent off as the first and second betting choices respectively. While Nashua broke best from the gate, Swaps and jockey Bill Shoemaker grabbed the lead in the first half mile. Jockey Eddie Arcaro guided Nashua a length off the pace before eventually closing the gap to 1/2 length behind Swaps. Still, they couldn’t catch their West coast rival and Swaps crossed the finish line 1 1/2 lengths in front of Nashua. Swaps became the 81st to etch his name on the list of Kentucky Derby winners. His young exercise rider, Art Sherman, had watched the race from the backstretch. Sherman would return to the Kentucky Derby the following year with the horse, Terrang. However, unlike Swaps, Terrang finished twelfth in the Derby. Shortly thereafter Sherman began a career as a jockey and continued riding until 1976, when he transitioned to training racehorses. 38 years later and now at the age of 77, Sherman continues to train Thoroughbred racehorses in southern California, with a home base at Los Alamitios Race Course.

Untapable

L to R from Top: Lilies on Oaks day; Untapable dominates the 140th Kentucky Oaks with Rosie Napravnik aboard; Rosie Napravnik celebrates her second win in the Oaks.

In 2008, friends Steve Coburn and Perry Martin purchased a lightly raced mare for $8,000. Her name was Love the Chase and she won only one of six lifetime starts. Near the time of her purchase by Coburn and Martin, someone mentioned that only a “dumbass” would buy her for that amount of money. In jest to the comment, Coburn and Martin named their racing stable “Dumbass Partners” or “DAP” for short. They further embraced the comment by branding their purple silks with a green, bucktoothed donkey on the back and “DAP” on the front. The two apparent “dumbasses” then bred Love the Chase for a mere $2,500 to an undistinguished California sire, Lucky Pulpit. Lucky Pulpit raced a total of 22 times, winning three. The union between he and Love the Chase yielded a combined record of four wins from 28 starts, costing a grand total of $10,500. Three weeks prior to the birth of their modestly priced foal, Coburn dreamed Love the Chase would produce a chestnut colt with four white socks and a white blaze. Further, he dreamed the horse would win the Kentucky Derby. On February 18, 2011, Love the Chase gave birth to a chestnut colt…with four white socks and a white blaze. The colt was named California Chrome. With their homebred, happy, healthy and growing, Martin wrote a letter to Art Sherman, outlining a road to the Kentucky Derby and explaining DAP’s belief that Sherman and his “old school” training methods would be the right fit to continue their colt’s development. Sherman accepted. California Chrome was now stabled under the watchful eye of Swaps’ long past exercise rider and boxcar mate.

For California Chrome’s next start in the $200,000 King Glorious Stakes at Betfair Hollywood Park, Sherman hired jockey Victor Espinoza as the new mount for the struggling colt. An experienced rider, Espinoza’s greatest moments came over 10 years earlier when he guided the front-running, War Emblem, to victory in the 2002 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. However, Espinoza and War Emblem failed in their bid for the Triple Crown when they finished eighth in the Belmont Stakes after breaking slowly and becoming trapped on the rail. Still, Espinoza brought the experience and ability that Sherman was looking for.

On April 26, 2013, California Chrome made his first start, a baby race of just 4 1/2 furlongs over the synthetic track at Betfair Hollywood Park. He would rally late to finish second by 1 length. On May 17, 2013, he made his second start under the same conditions and broke his maiden with a 2 3/4 length victory. He raced four more times, all in stakes competition, finishing fifth in his next, followed by his second win before a pair of disappointing sixth place efforts. Art Sherman decided to make a change.

With Espinoza aboard, California Chrome won the 7 furlong King Glorious Stakes by 6 1/4 lengths to finish 2013. Next, the pair stretched out to 1 1/16 miles and won the California Cup Derby at Santa Anita by 5 1/2 lengths. Despite the dominant victories, doubters of California Chrome remained as the previous two races were restricted to California-bred horses. However, Sherman next entered the colt against open company in the San Felipe Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita, a major prep for the prestigious Santa Anita Derby (G1). This time California Chrome

Page 40

proved even more dominant, winning by a spectacular 7 1/4 lengths while stamping himself a legitimate Kentucky Derby hopeful. With the Santa Anita Derby remaining as his last race prior to a potential start in the Kentucky Derby, Coburn and Martin received an offer of $6 million to purchase 51% controlling interest in their $10,500 colt. They declined the offer. The Santa Anita Derby arrived on April 5, 2014. ‘Chrome, as he had now become affectionately known by his growing fan base entered the gate as the race favorite and took one last step toward Kentucky. After acting up a little in the starting gate and breaking a bit awkwardly, Espinoza settled California Chrome L to R from Top: Racing around the clubhouse turn; Roses on Derby day; Hats at the Kentucky Derby remain a timeless tradition; The gigantic new display on the Churchill backside was visible to everyone at the track.

in second and just outside the pace. Around the far turn and entering the stretch, Espinoza asked ‘Chrome for more and the colt exploded to the lead in a move that had now become his signature. There were no challengers to be found. California Chrome hit the wire 5 1/4 lengths ahead of the highly regarded Hoppertunity, with another talented colt, Candy Boy, finishing third. After the dominance of the victory, there was no further question that California Chrome would leave his home state and enter Kentucky as the Derby favorite. Finishing their major preparations at Los Alamitos, Sherman shipped California Chrome to Kentucky the week leading up to the race. Much

Page 42

as was the case with Swaps in 1955, Sherman found many people continued to doubt his horse’s ability to win the Derby. Despite winning his previous four starts by a combined 24 1/4 lengths, many cited that ‘Chrome had not won a race outside of California, while others questioned the level of competition he had been running against. Further, there was the other talented Derby contenders including the stretch-running Wood Memorial (G1) victor, Wicked Strong and the up and coming Arkansas Derby (G1) winner, Danza among the California horses including Hoppertunity and Candy Boy, aiming for another crack at ‘Chrome. However, the potential biggest question of all centered on his pedigree. Many discussed his modest bloodlines and meager $10,500 price tag, but even further, it was significant to note that no California-bred had won the Kentucky Derby since Decidedly in 1962. If that wasn’t enough, there remained the realities facing all Derby entrants. In a 20-horse field, traffic is inevitable and much of the race is decided by the trip afforded to any horse. Part of that trip is dependent on the post position draw. Albeit, not ideal, California Chrome drew

post position 5 and was installed as the 5-2 morning line favorite. Hoppertunity drew post 11 and was listed as the second choice at 6-1, but had to unfortunately scratch before the race. Wicked Strong was the third choice at 8-1 in post 20, while Danza was the fourth choice at 10-1 from post 4. 20 horses entered the Derby and 19 moved into the starting gate. While many doubters of California Chrome remained, others refused to ignore what was directly in front of them. ‘Chrome had dominated his rivals to this point and pending a clean break and good trip, he could do it again. The gates flew open and California Chrome broke sharply, however Uncle Sigh (3) flashed from the inside and Chitu (13) from the outside to take the lead and set the pace. California Chrome settled in third and was closed in from the outside by Samraat (6). The field moved under the wire for the first time

and into the clubhouse turn. Uncle Sigh held his nose in front of Chitu to his outside and set a moderate opening fraction of 47.37 for the first 1/2 mile. The field held position along the backstretch with California Chrome clear and three wide of Uncle Sigh and Chitu with Samraat to his outside in fourth and Intense Holiday one path further out in fifth. Uncle Sigh moved through 3/4 of a mile in 1:11.80 and the field began to round the far turn. California Chrome moved for lead and challenged Uncle Sigh and Chitu from the outside. Samraat moved with him and they went four-wide exiting the turn. Victor Espinoza asked ‘Chrome for his signature move at the top of the stretch and the colt responded in push-button fashion. California Chrome exploded to the lead and opened up five lengths in-between him and the tiring Chitu and Samraat. Uncle Sigh faded further back. Danza moved up from the inside before swerving out and around Samraat while Commanding Curve moved from second to last earlier in the race and set sights on California Chrome.

California Chrome

However, his valiant run was too late and California Chrome crossed the wire, throttling down and 1 3/4 lengths ahead of Commanding Curve. Danza was third, followed by a photo for fourth with Wicked Strong just edging out the fighting Samraat. California Chrome completed the 1 1/4 miles in a final time of 2:03.66. While many doubters remained and pointed out the slow winning

The 140th KENTUCKY DERBY time, it is of note that ‘Chrome and the Derby field ran into a significant head wind and that this wind may have aided in drying the track prematurely, thus making it loose and more difficult to run on. Despite the doubt, California Chrome accomplished the unthinkable. The $10,500 homebred colt for Dumbass Partners became the first California-bred to win the Derby since Decidedly 52 years earlier. Further, Art Sherman’s career came full circle as he became the oldest winning Derby trainer at age 77, 59 years after he rode in a boxcar across the country with a horse named Swaps. Potentially even more significant though, ‘Chrome had entirely validated the dream Steve Coburn had three weeks prior to

the colt’s birth. After the race, a tearful Coburn said, “I said when this horse wins the Kentucky Derby, I believe this horse will win the Triple Crown.” He later continued, “this Colt, was born on my sister Brenda’s birthday, February 18th. She died of cancer at age 36. It will be 36 years, this year, since there’s been a Triple Crown winner, and I told people, I said this colt would go down in history, and if this colt, when he wins the Triple Crown, he will be the first California-bred to ever win a Triple Crown, and that’s where we’re going.” Triple Crown or not, Coburn, Sherman, Espinoza and ‘Chrome will all move onto to Pimlico and the Preakness Stakes in two weeks, while leaving behind a 140th name added to that illustrious list of Kentucky Derby winners.

Teen Corral w/ Clint Van Hi! Its been a crazy busy month Fort Smith and then Carthage Missouri on the way home. Hit a barrel at Fort Smith but did pretty good at Carthage. This month I met a new friend. So I would like to introduce to you An Oakie, a rancher and a barrel racer!!!

Tori Clay What is your name: Tori Clay Age: 18 School: Oklahoma State University Parents: Bobby Clay and Tammy Compton Siblings: Brooke and Will Clay Hometown: Perkins Oklahoma Plans for college and where? I will attend Oklahoma State for my first two years majoring in Ag Business and an option in Ranch Management. My junior year I will transfer down to TCU in Fort Worth Texas in order to attend their 9 month long ranch management program, and to finish up I will transfer back to Oklahoma State my senior year to graduate. I also intend on looking into various A.I. and embryo courses. Do your parents ride? Yes, my father owns and operates a commercial Angus and cross-bred cattle ranch, Clay Ranch. He and I both use horses to work, move, sort, and check cattle daily.

Horses (names/ quirks/ any info)what you have done on them: Coles Roan Bar: He is a sorrel, ranch/rope horse that lives up to his common name, “Shorty.” He tends to suffer from, “Little man syndrome” I use him daily on the ranch, and in the evenings we team rope. He ropes off both ends, but I use him on the heel side and also to breakaway. Along with team roping, I also use him in the occasional ranch rodeo. (Similar to the typical rodeo, only events consist more of sortin, branding, penning etc.) He is a heck of a horse that never backs down from a challenge, whether it is high water, a big calf on the end of a rope or me dragging him to those random team sortins that I love to go to. (With the future sis-in-law Courtney as my trust worthy, fastest time so far this summer, partner) Sonechoes Red Ryder- 15 hands /15 years old/ sorrel gelding . Clint VanVolkenburgh has owned him for the last 10 years. His accomplishments (to name a few ): Congress sweepstakes finalist barrels and poles /Congress youth

Page 48

TEEN CORRAL

w/Clint Van

What is your favorite show and why? My favorite Rodeo all year is the IFYR (International Finals Youth Rodeo) in Shawnee, Oklahoma. This is my last year to compete, and I couldn’t be more excited. Especially with Ryder alongside me now.

barrels champion and reserve champion/NBHA state champion youth Indiana and Ohio/ Nbha top five at youth world / IBRA reserve champion and winner of many open barrel races.. .His personality is the best you don’t walk by a bale of hay without him grabbing a bite (and grabbing everyone in your alleys also)...He sucks his tongue when time to eat(wants fed first) and when your done running he pushes you all the way to the trailer like he is so proud of his self. Hobbies: Team Roping (Heeler), Breakaway, Barrels, Poles, Ranch Rodeos Who is your mentor? My mentor is my Daddy, Bobby Clay, I look up to him. He is the person I go when I need help with whatever. He is my header and I am his heeler. That’s pretty much the best way to sum up our awesome father-daughter relationship. Typical girls want to grow up to be models, doctors, nurses, lawyers etc. But I want, and am, going to grow up to be like my Daddy, a rancher. What associations do you belong to? Horse-wise, I am a member of two rodeo clubs in two towns, the Chandler Round-up Club and the Cherokee Strip Riding Club in Perry, OK. I also complete in the COJRA sanctioned rodeos in Stillwater, OK. Cattle-wise, I am a member of the Oklahoma Angus Association and the Payne County Cattle Producers Association. I plan on being part of many more as I go through college.

What are your horse related goals? My goal is to be able to train and raise a few ranch horses. There is nothing better than a good, punchy lookin, do it all, ranch horse. How do barrel races differ from Oklahoma to back here in Indiana? There really aren’t many differences, except we have a lot more big outdoor pens here in Oklahoma versus Indiana. Who is your favorite horse and why? Oh gosh, that’s like asking a parent which child is their favorite. Next question please! Describe some of your ranch duties: My duties on the ranch vary from setting up rounds of cows for egg transplants, to (Easy Clint, don’t cringe) castrating bull calves, to wire brushing H brace after H brace after H brace to get them ready to paint. Where do you see yourself in 10 years? In 10 years I see myself graduated from college, starting a family, running the family ranch and accomplishing all my goals. wishing everybody good luck at their state shows and all youth good luck at youth world!!! Run hard: Clint Van www.clintvanvolkenburgh.bodybyvi.com Clint is a graduate of East Central High School. His parents are Terrie VanVolkenburgh and respectively Joe Trentman. He has grown up in the horse world, both parents have rode almost all their life...Clint's grandfather as some of you may remember was the late Terry VanVolkenburgh, who would run up and down the fences when his daughters would run barrels. Clint began barrel racing at the age of 4 with a pony, then went on to particpate in Jr. Rodeo and his favorite event was the sheep riding, hard to believe he is now a barrel racer. He has won the Ohio Youth NBHA and Indiana Youth and Open NBHA , he has also won the Congress youth barrel four times, and was runner up in the Congress Sweepstakes. He placed at Josey Jr. world numerous times, and won the NBHA Youth World 1D in 2006. He loves to barrel race and is now trying his hand at the futurities. In Clint's spare time he mows grass for a part time job and is also very active in his church where he and his cousins are bible school helpers. Clint also volunteers one day a week at a school in Cincinatti where he spends time tutoring other kids in reading.

h, July...summer is finally here bringing longer evenings, slick horses, and great rodeo weather. By now, we have had a few rodeos and the kids are kicking up some dust in the practice pens. At the end of June, many of our Jr. High Division members from Team Indiana made a trip to Nationals in Des Moines, Iowa. This week long rodeo gives the members the chance to compete on a national level against many other tough kids from all over the country. In past years, the stories, experiences, and memories the Indiana cowboys and cowgirls come home with are plentiful. What a great opportunity for the kids to compete with others their age and make friends all across the country. Next month we will share some of their experiences with you. August will bring our IJRA State Finals which will be held at C bar C arena in Cloverdale, IN on August 9-10th. This is always such a fun rodeo for the kids and parents. Our Princess Contest will happen on Saturday morning and our new Princess crowned before the performance

on Sunday. We have extra games, relaxed days, and a dinner to make it even more fun. This year we will be drawing the winning raffle ticket for the Merhow Verylite 2 Horse Bumper Pull trailer. If you haven’t purchased your lucky ticket yet, be sure to see and IJRA member or contact a member of our Board of Directors and we will be happy to send some out to you. Wishing everyone a safe and happy 4th of July. The cowboys and cowgirls will be out and about all over the country during Cowboy Christmas, the kick off to many fair rodeos that draw the cowboys and cowgirls from all over the country. This summer, the Indiana Junior Rodeo Association will be at the IPRA/MSRA rodeo in Goshen, Indiana on July 25th doing the grand entry and selling raffle tickets. Come out and support the IJRA kids, see a great rodeo, and watch some of our IJRA cowboys and cowgirls compete.

CHRISTIAN COWBOY COLLECTION

Are You Thirsty?

w/ Christa Conway

The last line of last month’s column was this, “We can sit on a shelf and be admired or we can carry a drink to someone who is thirsting.” When I mentioned those words, I wasn’t referring to a literal drink, but something more. Are you thirsty? I don’t mean for a drink of iced tea or lemonade....or even water. I’m talking about a different kind of thirst. The kind of thirst I am referring to is something you feel deep in your soul. It’s a longing for something, but you just can’t put your finger on what it is. No matter what you try, it does not take the thirst away or fill the void. What is this empty feeling? How do you describe it? Where does it come from and how can you finally make it “go away?” I can only pull from my own personal experience as far as the feeling itself and how I felt (and sometimes still feel) when that emptiness or “thirst” seems to overtake, sometimes overwhelm, me. It is a yearning for something not found in material things or earthly relationships. Scripture mentions this thirst in several places. David even seemed to have had this “thirst” many years ago and mentions it several times in the Psalms. Here are just a few. Psalm 42:1-2 1 As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God. 2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. Psalm 63:1 O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water. Psalm 143:6 I stretch out my hands to you; my soul thirsts for you like a parched land. Selah David was a man after God’s own heart, a man who God called even though he was far from perfect. David knew he was imperfect and he “thirsted” for God. He cried out to God. Only God could even begin to quench this thirst that David mentions over and over. This “thirst” has been around since Old Testament times. So, how do we get God to quench this thirst? He made it easy through Jesus. In the New Testament, Jesus himself tells us how to quench this thirst many times.

Page 54

John 6:35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst. John 7:37-39 Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, `From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’” I know when I find myself in a spiritual drought, so to speak, that it is not because the well dried up. The well is still full and flowing. I am thirsting because I have drifted too far from Jesus and I need to go back to the source and allow Him to revive me with the living water. The best part of all is that someday that “thirst” will be eternally quenched!

John describes it to us in Revelation. Revelation 7:14-17 14And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. 15Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them. 16They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat. 17For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes. Let’s offer our friends and loved ones a drink that can really quench their thirst! Happy Trails & God Bless! Christa

On the Trail

By Brother Brad Curtis of Mountain Top Cowboy Church

STRUCK IT RICH When I rode in …seen it There at the edge of town A little white building` A bit shabby looking ‘n run down

That first night I was there Slept in the livery stable Would rent me a room As soon as I was able

Pannin` that there creek Well…. It’s played out and dry No ones gittin` rich Most barley gittin` by

The Lord has a treasure One that will not fade away Ask him into your heart Ride out forgiven this here day

This was a boom town Built on that yeller rock A church hereCouldn’t have much of a flock

That morning I went out Had to stake a claim Only problem was The whole country had done the same

That’s when it happened A claim that had to be filed This here cowboy Became God’s child

I’d been in this saddle Darn near all my days Livin` in line shacks Gatherin` up someone else’s strays

Went back into town Passed that house of prayer It was noon on Sunday Not a single soul was there

He then said, cowboy That building at the end of the street I preach there every Sunday morning When I can get folks to meet

When I heard about the strike Well thought I’d give’r a try Dreamed of having something Before I up and die

Went to the claim office Asked about a good site One where I’d get rich With out havin` to steal and fight

That rock was the answer I knew it would make me rich Yep I had gold fever Thinking about it made me twitch

He looked over his glasses Said listen here cowpolk I give you some advice Same I gave the other folk

This morning` I got there early No one came in Had a sermon for them But no one wants to hear about sin He then said cowboy Listen to this old man Get down on your knees But not by that creek to pan

I rode out of that town Passed by the house of prayer Knowing one thing Next Sunday this cowboy would be there By: Brad Curtis, Vilonia, AR Acts 3:6 Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk.

One Last (& most important) thought… Salvation is a gift and a choice...... Read past issues of our Christian Cowboy Collection and the Christian Barrel Racer’s Newsletter at the website below!

Jesus died on the cross as the final sacrifice for our sins. He was resurrected on the 3rd day and he defeated death and Satan for us. All we have to do is believe that He beat death, acknowledge it with our words and accept Him as our personal savior. That’s when the rebirth happens and we are changed! He then promises us eternal life with Him in Heaven! You can’t earn your way into Heaven; you have to accept His gift of salvation. So many people think they “aren’t good enough” to get to Heaven… But… Salvation is a GIFT from God and you don’t earn a gift. Gifts are given to you and for the gift to be yours, you have to accept it. All we have to do is accept this wonderful gift. I know I have…won’t you?

But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. Romans 5:15 For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Romans 10: 9-10

While at the Rewards Club, guests may register for one of several new daily contests and promotions offered to the lineup in 2014. Friday evenings offer “Beat the Big Guy,” which puts $100 on the line for the top player that can out-handicap the selections made by the “Big Guy” in five races on the program. In addition, all players who “Beat the Big Guy” in the promotion are eligible to return each Saturday for a $250 drawing. Friday evenings also offer “Friday Facebook Check-in” and “Five Grand,” which showcases the top five jockeys at the track. Anytime one of the top five jockeys wins in races 1-8, a $20 drawing is held. The new promotions join “Trifecta Tuesdays,” “Sur-5-vor” and “Winsday Wagering Warriors” as weekly contests. The format of “Winsday Wagering Warriors” has also been expanded to include a $2,000 final set for the last Wednesday of the meet Oct. 29. All contests are free with Rewards Club membership required to participate in all contests. Membership into the club is also free and offers members special promotions, points and privileges on all aspects of Indiana Grand, whether it be racing, gaming, dining or entertainment.

Racing season underway at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino The 12th season of Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing is underway at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino. The 120-day meet kicked off Tuesday, May 6 and has been going strong ever since, drawing large weekend crowds that are enjoying many new changes and upgrades to the facility. One of the most notable additions at Indiana Grand is the new state of the art 10mm LED Video Display board which is the centerpiece of the new tote board. The “Jumbotron” provides a perfect seat in the house for all racing fans and brings all the racing action to life. Along with the “Jumbotron,” all new flat screen televisions have been upgraded throughout the interior of the grandstand facility. The apron includes a new winner’s circle and three new food stations, including Derby Dawgs & Hoosier Burgers, Bears BBQ and Le Grande Taco stand. The Tiki Hut, a popular stop for patrons outdoors, has also been expanded to include patio style seating available during live racing. The $85,000-added Sagamore Sired Stakes and the $85,000-added Swifty Sired Fillies Stakes kicked off the stakes season in early June. In all, more than $4 million will be offered during the season for Thoroughbred racing spread over 35 stakes races. The $200,000-added Centaur Stakes and the $100,000-added J. Kenneth Self Shelby County Boys Club Stakes, both listed events, will kick off turf racing in early July. HRTV’s On-Air Television Host Peter Lurie will be on track to showcase the day of racing Wednesday, July 2. Lurie will be joined by Indiana Grand’s broadcast team that includes Rachel McLaughlin, Bill Downes and Nancy Ury-Holthus.

One of the biggest upgrades for horsemen in 2014 is the complete renovation of the racetrack. At the conclusion of the 2013 meet, Track Superintendent John Jamison went to work removing the old surface down to the base. The configuration of the track was realigned, bringing the grades down on both the turns and the straightaways, which is more conducive to Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing. Jamison also designed a new starting gate with state of the art options. The gate offers two different settings, operating on hydraulics to move closer to the ground during Quarter Horse racing. Upgrades and changes have also been made on the backstretch at Indiana Grand. Two new barns opened for the 2014 race meet, bringing the number of stalls available to just under 1,000. Each of the new barns offer 76 stalls with 13 tack rooms and six wash bays. Eight new walking machines are now available and construction is underway on additional dormitories. The Backstretch Café has also had upgrades, now providing both American and Hispanic fare. The facility is open to the public and is a perfect place to catch morning workouts as it overlooks the racetrack and offers new patio seating. Several special events have been set up during the 2014 meet. “International Festival” is slated for Saturday, Aug. 9, “Brews, Blues and BBQ” will be the focus Saturday, Sept. 13, and “Indiana Derby Night” will be the highlight of the season Saturday, Oct. 4. The event is the richest day in racing for the state of Indiana and includes more than $1 million in purse money featuring the 20th running of the Grade II $500,000-added Indiana Derby and the Grade II $200,000-added Indiana Oaks. The final evening of racing in 2014 will be conducted Saturday, Nov. 1, which is also Breeders’ Cup Day.

FastBet Mobile, a fully mobile race wagering technology that offers guests the ability to wager directly from a supplied mobile tablet or their own smartphone, iPad or Android device is now available. Hand held devices are available to use from the new Rewards Club, which has locations on both the first floor OTB level as well as the second floor Clubhouse.

More Fun with Chuck the Chicken

That’s right, the family was enjoying supper one evening around the kitchen table (I don’t think they were having dumplings...whew!) and Chuck decided he wanted to get be part of the meal - not literally, of course.

So, last month I introduced you all to Chuck, the rooster that thinks he’s a dog. I ‘ll admit, I was kind of poking a little fun at the guy with his “cock a doodle doo” and his flogging of Miss Maybelline. (Did I mention I thought I seen him “wag” his tail feathers?)

He flew up as close to the door as he could and let us know he was there with his typical annoying rooster call. To be honest, I got a little worried....I mean, Miss Maybelline and I are the only critters allowed in the house and I was hoping the people wanted to leave it that way.

Anyway, I don’t think I realized how serious this problem was getting until I noticed that Chuck was hanging around the doors to the house a little too much. I think he has decided he wants to be a house dog. Ruh Roh!!

My people didn’t let me down. Chuck got a little of his own medicine in the form of a people flogging. (Now, that’s something funny to witness if you’ve never seen one!) Chuck took his place back with the outside dogs and seems to be content once again just hanging out with Duke and Freckles. I still need to learn that chicken dance.... or maybe that people flogging dance....
