LETTER FROM THE EDITOR A Letter from the Editor

T

I’m sure you all have realized that this month’s issue is a combined issue of July and August. Although we typically would not do this, due to the time constraints and technical issues we had in June and July, we thought this was the only way we could keep on track with our printing schedule without going completely insane;) That being said, we really hope you enjoy this issue! We have coverage from the National Pole Bending Association Championships as well as some great coverage in our news section from Indiana Grand Racing & Casino and Quarter Horse Day and the ITOBA section has coverage from the Indiana Derby! It looks like the rain has finally decided to stay away (after the wettest spring/early summer I can ever remember) and we may actually get to “enjoy” some dusty evenings in the arena on horseback or spectating. Many horse shows have been canceled so far this year, so we have a lot of making up to do! Let’s get out there and get some riding in and make some horse related memories with our friends and family. Enjoy some time at a local 4H fair this month -maybe eat a funnel cake or a corn dog, drink a lemonade shake-up (or two.) Maybe We’ll see you there.

Follow Us

Until next month.... I prefer the deep fried veggies with my lemonade shake-up... Oh, and don’t forget to count your blessings on horseback! God Bless and Ride Safe, Christa Conway

A Little “Barrel Talk”

If you have visited “Barrel Talk” on BarrelHorseWorld.com, then you’ll have an idea of what to expect here. If you are not familiar with this “on-line hot spot,” be prepared to read interesting comments from other people in the horse world. We try to include topics that might be helpful and/or meaningful to our readers. To read more visit www.barrelhorseworld.com.

Slowing Down (Off the Track) Mare GrahamKayleigh I just got in a mare that won over $8k on the track. She is all run and on go when I ask anything of her. I feel like I’m riding a cracked out gazelle!! She has a decent stop and backs up great. I have control but if I ask her to trot or lope it’s RUNNNNNNNNN. Any exercises to get her to learn to slow her lope down and teach her brain it’s not always about run??? (I’ve had 5 horses off the track and this is my first time dealing with one like this, my others are lazy!) little_bug Ask her to trot (on a loose rein), as soon as she goes to speed up make her stop and back up, then repeat every time. It is very wearing but it does normally work. Eventually she will be constantly waiting for you to ask her to stop so she will keep her speed to a minimum. RodeoCowgirl4u Also when you do go into the lope just circle, circle, circle so she can’t build and get that power going in a straightaway. Racehorses are trained to run FASTER and lean into the bit when they feel rein contact, so if you

Page 4

are ever getting run off with...drop your reins and they slow to a trot. Griz I would turn her out on pasture for several months and make sure she is off all the “extras” they probably gave her on the track. GrahamKayleigh Thank you all for your input. I am going to try to just shut her down and back her up a bunch as soon as she tries to get hot and speed up. I think this “trainer” programed her to do nothing but run when asked to move forward. The other track horses I bought were broke properly and never acted this way. If I were to drop my reins on her she would most definitely run off. I ride light handed and most of the time I put pressure on my reins when she wants to speed up then release shortly after. She’s slowly figuring it out. Thanks! cowgirl_3207 Anytime I bring a new off the track horse in they get a LONG break. Depending on the horse 3-8 months

off. I will do ground work and pony them, but no riding until they can think of other things then just running. iheartrodeo Clinton Anderson cruising exercise. Do this after you’ve mastered flexing side to side at the stand still. It’s basically the same as described earlier.....ask to go whatever speed you want on a loose rein and as soon as they go faster than you want you do a one rein stop. I’ve tried the stopping and backing and it just seems that the one rein stops keep them softer and keep them from bracing. I had basically a runaway and after using this drill, I can now ride down the road or anywhere with my hand on his neck at whatever speed I ask for. I should note that this took several weeks of repeating this exercise to get to that point. Patience! Other drills are: 4-Leaf clover (also a CA drill): I found a little description here: http:// www.dallyupranch.com/cl_cloverpattern.htm They figure out that they aren’t really going anywhere because they keep having to pass the center cone. They get to where they really want

to slow down, even stop at that center cone. Circle tires: http://www.freebarrelracingtips.com/circle-tires-forsmoother-runs-and-faster-times You don’t have to go around every tire for your application. And, you don’t even really need the tires. You can start in a larger circle and when they start getting faster than you want, you do a small tight circle to break them down a notch then back out to the larger circle. You may have to start out doing lots of tight circles, but eventually you’ll get to where you can lope a nice large slow circle. FLITASTIC RE: Griz My thought exactly. My colt was super nice and willing when I picked him up off the track but he was on 12 pounds of Omelene 200 when I got him...

News The Heritage Place Futurity is the richest race in Oklahoma, sporting a purse of over $1.1 million for the Grade I event. BV Midnight Express was the winner for the Helmuts, who are just as proud of their recent winner BV I Know You Rider. Photo by Linscott Photography

“He (BV I Know You Rider) needed to break well and get out,” said Fred. “It’s all about the start in Quarter Horses. I knew if he got out, he would have a great chance. He was at Randy’s house and Randy called and said he really liked him from the get-go. He told us he had some wheels under him. He was pretty impressive tonight and we are so happy with this win.”

BV I Know You Rider dominant in Jaguar Rocket Futurity SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – July 4, 2015 – BV I Know You Rider was heavily favored for a reason in the 13th running of the $132,700 Jaguar Rocket Futurity Saturday, July 4. The two-yearold son of Teller Cartel came into the race with a perfect record, and he did not disappoint, winning the stakes by one and one-half lengths for Indiana Grand’s Leading Quarter Horse Jockey Juan Guerrero. Starting from post two, BV I Know You Rider came out of the gate quickly and seemed to be in control of the race from the start. Guerrero kept his mind focused on the finish in the 300 yard sprint and was never really challenged as he glided across the wire in a time of :15.553 seconds. Ima Country Rooster and Im a Little Country battled side by side the entire length of the stretch and could not be separated at the wire, finishing in a dead heat for second. “He (BV I Know You Rider) has been the best one in the barn from the very start,” said Guerrero, who rides first call for Trainer Randy Smith. “He is easy to ride and broke well tonight.” Owned by Carolyn and Fred Helmut’s Bella Vista Farms of Arcola, Ill., BV I Know You Rider remains undefeated in three lifetime starts. He increased his career earnings in his brief career to more than $88,000. No surprise at the windows, BV I Know You Rider paid $3.20, $2.40, $2.20 across the board. “Fred raised him (BV I Know You Rider),” said Smith, who saddled 18 horses during the night on the all-Quarter Horse card at Indiana Grand. “He was a little tough to break, but once we got him broke, it was all over. He knew what it was all about.” BV I Know You Rider is one of several racing out of the Smith Stable for the Helmuts. They concentrate of two locations for racing and stand their stallion, First Corona Home, at Southern Indiana Equine under the direction of Dr. Amy Youngblood. “We have about 50 or 60 horses right now,” said Fred Helmut. “We have half in an Oklahoma program and half in the Indiana program and we run our horses here with Randy (Smith). We keep most of our mares at Amy’s (Southern Indiana Equine). We started in about 1990 so we’ve paid our dues. It’s been a great year for us so far. We just won the Heritage Place Futurity in Oklahoma, so adding this is great.”

Beach Runner surprises in Indiana Grand Classic SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – July 4, 2015 – In a full field of 10 packed with talent, Beach Runner and Jockey Jose Beltran were able to get to the wire first in the third running of the $49,250 Indiana Grand Classic during the second all-Quarter Horse Night of the season Saturday, July 4. The race was one of five stakes races on the card for the sprinters, boasting purses in excess of $571,000. Starting from post eight, Beach Runner got a good break and was in a cluster of horses during the 400 yard dash. Racing room was tight all the way to the wire that brought Beach Runner home just a head in front of Fierce Runaway, who was the defending champ in the Indiana Grand Classic. WH Streakin Pie and Victor Olivo were flying on the outside at the end and finished just a neck back in third place. Time for the 400 yard dash was :19.890 seconds, a new stakes record after the race was moved to the 400 yard distance last season. “She (Beach Runner) broke in front and she veered in a little but I switched my stick and straightened her up,” said Beltran. “I rode her here last year one time, too, for Mr. Barraza. She raced really well tonight.” Beach Runner picked up her fourth career win for owner Janette Barraza and Trainer Felix Barraza. She also topped the $100,000 mark in earnings with the win in the Indiana Grand Classic. Beach Runner paid $45.00, $22.00, $6.60 across the board as the longest shot in the race. “Last time (in the Born Runner Classic), she (Beach Runner) didn’t have enough work,” said Felix Barraza. “She wasn’t making it all the way through the 400. She’s really good out of the gate, but she just wasn’t holding on. We put more work into her and I think we have finally figured her out. She will run all the stakes here this year. In fact, I

News paid her in late to one of the stakes because I wasn’t sure we were going to put her in them.” Beach Runner is the four-year-old daughter of Escondido Beach, Indiana’s 2014 Stallion of the Year. Breeder Sheri Miller was also in the winner’s circle following the win by Beach Runner. Miller still owns her mother, Flashin Dee Dee and is the co-breeder of Escondido Beach with Bobby Cox. “Bobby Cox has done a lot of really good things for racing,” said Miller. “Having Escondido Beach in the Indiana program has been great. And, racing in Indiana is great right now.” Escondido Beach finished third in the Grade III Texas Challenge at Sam Houston as a three-year-old. He ran under the direction of Miller in Indiana, and even competed in the 2009 Indiana Downs Classic, which was renamed to the Indiana Grand Classic in 2013 and was increased to 400 yards in 2014.

was he had won two so just do that. He (Megatron Harry) was wound up in the post parade but when he got in the gate, he was good and he broke sharp and got the job done.” The win marked the richest race Prescott had ever won in his 20-plus year career as a jockey. Prescott, Indiana’s all-time leading Thoroughbred jockey, has won numerous stakes races in both the Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred ranks. This was the seventh Quarter Horse stakes win for Prescott at Indiana Grand. Megatron Harry remains undefeated in three starts for Smith and his owner, Sheri Miller. The Escondido Beach gelding now possesses more than $131,000 in career earnings. “He (Megatron Harry) is an easy keeper in the barn,” said Smith, who is Indiana Grand’s Leading Quarter Horse Trainer. “Early on, he had an ankle injury and Gordy Timms owned him then and worked really hard on him to get him back. When he brought him to the track, he was like brand new.”

Megatron Harry paid $10.00, $5.40, $3.00 across the board. His time of :15.672 seconds in the Mobley Futurity established a new stakes record, breaking the old mark set by Doc Special and Harold Collins in 2012 in a time of :16.130. Out of six starters in the race for Smith, he recorded a first, second, fourth and fifth in the race. In all, Smith saddled 18 horses during the nine race card that was dedicated to the sprinters.

Megatron Harry prevails in Gordon Mobley Futurity

Smith currently leads the Indiana Grand Quarter Horse trainer standings with 20 wins and nearly $500,000 in purse earnings. He earned his first Leading Trainer title at Indiana Grand in 2014, scoring 28 wins, which is a new record at the track for most wins by a trainer in one season. Guerrero also leads the standings in the Quarter Horse jockey ranks with 17 wins. Miller is the currently leading owner in 2015 with six wins.

Trainer Randy Smith had six qualify for the final of the Mobley Futurity and his primary rider, Juan Guerrero had ridden four of them. My Louisiana Rod was the fastest qualifier out of the Smith barn, so Guerrero naturally chose him for the final. Megatron Harry was one of the horses that needed a new rider, so Rodney Prescott was secured to guide the two-year-old son of Escondido Beach through the 300-yard final.

SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – July 4, 2015 – There were three horses stretched across the track at the finish line, but it was Megatron Harry and Rodney Prescott who prevailed in the sixth running of the $199,200 Gordon Mobley Futurity at Indiana Grand Saturday, July 4. The race’s purse equaled last year’s sum, which marks the richest Quarter Horse race ever contested in the state of Indiana.

Mesa Marvel on top of her game in Bradford Stakes

Starting from post seven, Megatron Harry got a good break and was in the mix from start to finish, battling with Beach Bum Eddie and Jose Beltran and My Louisiana Rod and Guerrero all the way through the race. Megatron Harry showed his grit in the final strides as he fought his way to the finish, winning the race by a mere head over My Louisiana Rod, who was just a nose ahead of Beach Bum Eddie for second.

SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – July 4, 2015 – It was a big night for Trainer Ricardo Martinez and Jockey Cristian Esqueda. The two connected for three wins on the ninerace program dedicated to all Quarter Horses. Included in the triple was a victory with Mesa Marvel in the $48,160 Bradford Stakes.

“Randy didn’t give me any instructions to ride him (Megatron Harry),” said Prescott. “I saw him the other morning and the only thing he said

The race was contested at Hoosier Park beginning in 1999 and is now in its eighth running at Indiana Grand. Several stakes winners were

News included in the race, including 2013 Bradford Stakes winner and stakes record holder Finche, who was the one of the favorites in the race. Mesa Marvel began right in the center of the pack from post six and was a contender for the lead when the starting gate sprung open. The fouryear-old son of Foose battled with Diamonds Edge and Cesar Esqueda along with Air Born Leader and Harold Collins in the first half of the 400-yard dash. Mesa Marvel seemed to find another gear late and was able to extend his lead to one-half length as he crossed under the finish line in a time of :19.941 seconds. Finche and Shanley Jackson finished second, just a head in front of Dashing Manner and Derek Bell for third. Five horses were stretched across the track in the photo finish of the race. Mesa Marvel paid $6.80, $3.80, $3.00 across the board. The California-bred was added to Martinez’ barn last fall through a claim at Los Alamitos. Martinez has done well with the gelding, winning four races in seven starts. Mesa Marvel now has seven career wins in 18 starts and boosted his career earnings to more than $105,000 with his win in the Bradford Stakes. “It was just another easy horse to ride,” said Esqueda. “This is only the third time I have ridden him. I breezed him one time for Mr. Martinez when he brought him in and then I rode him in his last start. I started riding for Mr. Martinez at Hialeah this past winter. He gave me a chance down there and now he’s giving me a chance to ride for him here. He usually brings in riders for his races here, so I really appreciate the opportunity to ride for him.” Martinez is stabled in Chicago, his home base. He currently has 13 horses in his barn and divides his times between Indiana and Iowa. He ventures to warmer weather during the winter months and trains and races at Hialeah Park in Miami, Fla. Martinez has been competing on the Indiana circuit for the past six years, racing at both Hoosier Park and Indiana Grand. His win in the Bradford Stakes marks his fifth stakes win in the state of Indiana. He won the Heartland Futurity earlier in the night with Woop Dee Doo and also saddled a winner in the last race with twoyear-old maiden The Charmed Ruler, also ridden by Esqueda. The 13th season of live Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse continues through Saturday, Oct. 31, 2015 with racing conducted Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 2:05 p.m. and Saturdays set at 6:05 p.m. About Indiana Grand Racing & Casino: Indiana Grand Racing & Casino, a Centaur Gaming destination, holds multiple awards from industry publications for customer service, entertainment, gaming and dining. Florida Governor Signs HB 239 Florida Governor Rick Scott recently signed HB 239 relating to Medication and Testing of Racing Animals. Effective July 1, 2015, the bill will dramatically change Chapter 550.2415, Florida Statutes, which has governed the use of Florida Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred race-day medication for more than 25 years. HB 239 requires the Florida Division of Pari-Mutuel Wagering to adopt rules regarding the use and allowed levels of medications, drugs, and naturally occurring substances in racing horses, as listed by the Association of Racing Commissioners International (ARCI). The penalties followed for misuse of those medications will be those listed by ARCI as well.

Page 12

The Florida Quarter Horse Racing Association, the Florida Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association, Florida Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Association and the Jockey Club worked together for three years in the Florida legislature to have the ARCI medication and penalty rules adopted as law. Each organization testified as to the importance of this issue as it related to equine health along with the long term good adopting the ARCI Model Rules for medications and penalties would do for the racing and breeding industry. This is a major step forward in protecting the welfare of the horse and the integrity of the Florida horse racing product. To meet the ARCI specifications, a jurisdiction must use a testing laboratory that meets certain qualifications.

More Cats.... (Monsters, hint...hint) I introduced you to Sully the cat last month, but I didn’t fill you in on how he got his name. It seems the people around here try way too hard to be funny. Everything has a “theme” or something along those lines. (You notice my name is Bella - and we also have recently had an Annabelle and now a Maybelline... notice anything that rings a “bell?”) They are so funny, right? Anyway, the kitties at the barn all have names from a familiar movie that you all have probably seen. Maybe we should play a game. I’ll tell you the kitty names and you guess the movie! Well, “Sully” is actually James P. Sullivan. The little girl cat that looks like Sully is named “Mike,” (yes, a girl named Mike - A boy named Sue...whatever) short from Mike Wazowski. The little boy cat that is scared of everyone is named “Boo.” We call the rough looking white tom cat “Roz”

and the slinky black tom cat that is hard to spot is called “Boggs.” Do you notice a pattern or any familiar characters that align with those names? I’ll let you think about it. In the meantime, I’ll fill you in on some of the other “funny” names the people have had floating around the farm. There was a theme of adjectives for a time. (and yes, I know what adjectives are...I AM a writer!!) We had “Funny,” “Happy,” “Tuff,” “Sunny” and “Lucky.” Then we went through a same first letter phase. All names had to start with the letter “B.” We had “Butler,” “Bud,” “Betty,” “Bill” and the people though this one was hilarious... “Newby” - or “New B.” Ha ha ha, right. They are just so funny.

them had the cutest markings. It looked looked like he had a Burt Reynolds mustache. They started calling him “Turd Ferguson.” Poor little kitty - I hope the name didn’t stick at his new home. The other kittens were called everything from “Ed Grimley” and “Stefon” to “Debbie Downer” and “Mary Katherine Gallagher.” The kitties were lucky that none of those names stuck. I’m just glad I was the first of the “bell” series. I could have easily been called something off the wall crazy the way these people come up with names around here.

Now the theme is leaning towards Saturday Night Live characters. We had a litter of kittens that recently went to their new homes. One of

Flashback with Bella

Excerpt from Barks N Bits, 2010

Well, it turns out that having Annie around is maybe not so bad after all. Yes, I said it. But I have a very good reason. Table scraps.

I had been put on a “diet” after I got a little too large around the middle last winter. And by diet, I mean a “dog food only diet.” Talk about bland. Eating dog food is about as exciting as eating dirt. And I’ve eaten my share of dirt. (I catch a lot of moles in my spare time. *NOTE: Jack Russel earning her keep.....) By the way, I’ll have to say that I’m looking pretty good now. Slimming right on down there. I can even fit into my sweater from two years ago! Needless to say, it had been a while since I had gotten a bite of pepperoni pizza or cheeseburger. But something has changed since Annie arrived. “Cute Little Annie” has put a tinge of guilt in my owner’s hearts. I think they feel bad for me now that Annie gets so much attention....and therefore have become a little more lenient in my menu.

Bella

The original “bell,”

La La La La Life Goes On My owners say that “Princess Annabelle” (that’s her new name... insert gag here...) has the saddest little eyes. She begs without begging. All she has to do is look at them.... To tell you the truth, I find it amazing. And the best part is when she gets a bite, I get a bite. It is AWESOME! I’m actually beginning to “like” having her around. My new favorite line is, “Work it, Annie, Work it!” I’ve got to keep her on her toes. As long as she is staring at them with these eyes, it is yummy in my tummy!

Bella

Let’s just hope they don’t figure out that I am the brains behind this. Or it will be back to the old dog food. So, for now....I’m lovin’ Princess Annabelle!

National Pole Bending Association Championships T

he 2015 National Pole Bending Association Championship as a huge success. The Championship was hosted by C Bar C Expo Center in Cloverdale Indiana on June 5, 6 and 7. The show had record entries and paid out well over $65,000 in cash and prizes – including four trophy saddles. World Champions and Hall of Famers littered the field of pole benders, all negotiating the flame orange poles in search of big payouts and bragging rights.

The fire orange flaming poles weren’t the only things that were burning on Saturday night. Indiana cowboy and all around good guy Jimmie Bryant piloted Stylish Frenchfire to a blazing fast championship in front of a loud and

The Championship weekend kicked off with the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. The NPBA has made it a priority to pay tribute to the history of the sport and recognize pole bending’s rich history.

This year, the NPBA recognized and inducted into the Pole Bending Hall of Fame: Brian Foushee for his success as an exhibitor, rider, trainer and competitor; Mr. Excitabull, Tommy Masters’ wonderful horse for his many wins and successes; Brannon’s Nonstop Jet, another legendary horse who was nearly unbeatable and ran record times for the Dodd family; Chad Fentress, recognized as the Stephanie Marcum Sportsmanship inductee. Chad was recognized for the sportsmanship, humility and decency he has exhibited during his years as a competitor; and The McMillan family. It is unusual to recognize an entire family, but the McMillan’s have had successes and contributed to the advancement of the sport of pole bending for several generations. The Hall of Fame Ceremony also recognized the future of the sport as 2014 winners, Payton Carnahan and Brock Bawel, presented awards to the 2015 Outstanding Youth Pole Benders, Ross Ramsey and Larken Hope Jones. Young pole benders like these have bright futures in the sport. As always, the center piece of the NPBA Championship was Saturday night’s World’s Fastest Pole Bending. Each year, the horses and riders in this class live up to the name. The field of 30 saw not a single qualified run slower than 20.9 seconds. 2015 World’s Fastest Pole Bending The 2015 World’s Fastest Pole Bending was sponsored by the fine stallion Epic Leader.

In April the small town of Liberty, KY was invaded by Barrel Racers for our 2015 IBRA Match Race. This is one of my personal favorites. Not only does this preferred show award a ton of money , it is the most inexpensive that we host. The Match Race offers a unique opportunity for Barrel Racers to ride together in a team atmosphere. The 2015 Match Race offered 100% payback and $2000 added to award $532.50 to each member of the winning team, along with Best Ever Saddle Pads. Congratulations to team Coo Coo for Cloverleafs. Riders on the winning team were, Chris Coffey and Toast to Val, Andy Wininger and Fancy, Grant Patterson and CM Frosty Dynamite, Kaleb Ferrell and Howie, and Shannon Roberts and Bucky. Bringing a close to the 2015 Season was a brand new Preferred Show. For the first time in our history we offered a Preferred Show in Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania and the nearby states including, Maryland, Ohio, Virginia and West Virginia have always been great supporters of the IBRA. That did not change for this show. We completely sold out of stalls in the main barn at Diamond Seven and ran a lot of great barrel horses through the pen. The payout totaled nearly $30,000 and awarded division winner Wild Cards and Best Ever Saddle Pads to our Average winners. Congratulations to our winners: Friday Open Winners:Dena Myrter and Cisco (1D $447), Kelly Llewellyn and Mojos Dashn Rancher (2D $409), Michele Dibert and Mr.Castenada (3D $357), Tina Sherman and Streakin with Jewels (4D $319). 2015 IBRA National Finals

We often talk about the added money, all the awards that will be given away etc. but this year I want to leave that to the show flier. I want to talk about what makes our Nationals so special and that of course, is our membership. All of our members, barrel racers from all over have the opportunity to come together for a full week of doing what we love. It is a time to test our skills and our horses against those from different parts of the County and abroad. It is a time where we can reunite with friends and make new ones who share in the passion for our sport. It is an event that we can bring the whole family to and this year we finally have two events for everyone with the addition of the Adult class. The adult class has been very successful in its first year and I for one am very excited to crown our first ever Adult Class Champion. Now while the finals are supposed to be all fun and games, in order to keep things enjoyable for everyone there are some rules and guidelines that we all must abide by. As always you must have your health papers. This year we are requiring that all health papers be pulled no more than two weeks prior to the event. I know that I sound like a broken record but this is for your horses safety, the safety of the horses at the show and the safety of horses at the shows that follow Nationals. A visual examination will accompany the inspection of your health papers. If your horse is snooty, coughing or showing signs of a cold or sickness you will be asked to have the animal inspected by an onsite vet. If at any time during the event you become concerned that your horse may be coming down with a cold please be responsible and contact a veterinarian right away. This is our third year hosting Nationals at C Bar C. It is a fabulous facility that offers convenience that is unmatched. We can put 600 horses under one roof, meaning the majority of our contestants have only a short walk from their camping to their stalls and to anywhere they need to get for the show. While this is a great convenience it means that everyone must do their part in keeping their area clean. The staff at C Bar C work very hard to keep the facility’s main isles swept and all areas maintained. Please keep the isle ways in front of your stalls clean and most importantly your stalls. Last year we had some folks who would continuously turn the fans off. The exhaust fans and the overhead fans work as a system to move air through the barn and prevent ammonia build up. This will not work if the fans are not on. Please do not turn the fans off. We also had an issue with people refusing to keep their stalls in order. This year we will be inspecting all stalls each day. If your stall is found to be out of order you will receive a warning tag and 502-239-4000 office 502-239-4100 fax Shane@ibra.us

We have a major change that will be implemented with the 2015 National Finals as to how to will qualify for the Short Go. Please read the rules on the show flier completely. In order to maintain your State Qualifier, Top Dog or Wild Card status you must pre-enter prior to Sept. 8th. This is a Post Mark and/or Credit Card deadline. All entries post marked or called in after Sept. 8th will be considered non-qualifiers and will not be permitted to run in the Short Go regardless of placement in the Long Go’s. The Top 10 Qualifiers of each Long Go Round will advance to the Short Go Round. Top Dogs and Wildcard holders who do not place in the Top 10 will also advance to the Short Go in recognition of their outstanding performance during the regular season. State Qualifiers who did not earn a Top Dog position or a Wild Card in the regular season must place in the Top 10 of a Division in one of the Long Go Rounds to advance to the Short Go. We will not skip past the Wild Card holders and Top Dogs in counting the Top 10 State Qualifiers as we have in the past. The reason for this is that the Wild Card holders and the Top Dogs are also “State Qualifiers” and should be counted as part of the Top 10. The benefit and purpose of having a Wild Card or being a Top Dog is to provide the added reward of security at Nationals in recognition of a special accomplishment throughout the regular season. In the past we have counted the Top 10 skipping over these Wild Card holders and Top Dogs. This is one reason that in the past our Short Go was comprised of 60% percent of the original Long Go Rounds. This should help our Short Go at Nationals seem more like the Finale that it should be. In the Second Go Round we will skip past anyone who placed in the Top 10 in the First Go. We will as always highlight and post the qualifiers of each go round so that you know if you have made it back. .

BARREL RACING

Thank you to everyone who came to these shows. The proceeds from these help support our National Finals and the awards distributed there. There are many more highlights to our season than what is mentioned here. Each state has its own events, show grounds, Director, Reps., charities and excellent horses and riders that make them special. Over the next month we will see who is running where within those states through each State Finals and then bring everyone together for our National Finals.

you will be called to your stall. If the stall is not tended to immediately we will have it cleaned for you. There will be a $25 cleaning charge. The stall will be stripped and two bags of shavings added back to the stall at $7 each. It is not fair to those who do have their stalls in order to have someone next to them refuse to do so. It is also unfair to the horses and the contestants in the barn to have to deal with ammonia when there is a very simple solution.

Wild Card Information

We will soon be mailing out Wild Card Reminders for all the valid Wild Cards to date. If you do not have a Wild Card there are still ways to get them. The first is that each state will receive 13 Wild Cards to award at their State Finals. Second is the Wild Card auction. This year the Wild Card Auction will begin August 26th and end at 5pm September 3rd. Each state has a choice of how they will use one Wild Card as a awards fundraiser. They may come up with unique ideas or use the online auction. All the states that use the online auction will be listed on the homepage. You will need to contact each individual states director to place your bids.

Points at Nationals

As always the $10,000 Guaranteed Race will serve as the first Preferred Show of the new season. We will award 2016 points, 2016 Wild Cards and 4 Division Winner Saddles. This year at Nationals we will also award 2016 points to the two Long Goes. The 2015 National Finals will have an additional $5,000 added to the show flier with the addition of the Adult class. Between that and the number of entries we are expecting we should have our largest paying finals ever this year. Please remember that we do sell out of stalls every year. We can order additional tents but will only do so if the pre-entries warrant this. Even if you plan to late enter Nationals, if you need a stall you will need to send that in as early as possible. Thank you all for a wonderful 2015 season. good luck at your State Finals, good luck for 2016 and as always may God bless you and your animals in your travels.

Youth Day Experience June 20, 2015

By Tammy Knox SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – June 20, 2015 – The Quarter Horse Racing Association of Indiana (QHRAI) held another successful event as the Quarter Horse Youth Racing Experience was held at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino Saturday, June 20. More than a dozen teenagers ranging between 14 and 18 years old from Indiana spent the entire day learning about Quarter Horse racing followed by a night at the races. The first stop on the educational tour was a trip to the starting gate with Indiana Grand’s official starter, Steve Peterman. He explained how horses are taught to break from the gates and provided information on how the assistant starters teach horses to get comfortable in the gates. Several other guest speakers were on tap, including a veterinarian, equine research veterinarian, trainer, blacksmith, racing secretary and other key personnel at the facility. Participants also received a license from the Indiana Horse Racing Commission and learned about the process that all horsemen go through to receive a racing license in the state of Indiana. “My mom (Stephanie Rickly) told me about this event and I told Chelsea (Mack), who goes to my school,” said Wyatt Rickly, a junior at Triton Central in nearby Fairland, Ind. “This has been very interesting. Both of my parents work at the track. My mom is a trainer and my dad works on the starting gate, but I’ve learned a lot today about horses and racing.” Mack, who will be a senior at Triton Central High School in the fall, comes from a family that has a lot of Quarter Horses, but the Youth Racing Experience was her first exposure to racing.

Page 26

“It’s been a really neat day,” said Mack. “We have a lot of horses that we use for other things, such as barrels and showing, so it was interesting to learn about racing. I’m excited to get paired up with the trainer I drew (John McCreary) and walk through the process of prepping for the race and actually walking up to the paddock for race time.” Participants in the event ended their experience by taking a written exam. The top two highest scorers will receive a $1,000 scholarship and the winner will advance to the national level, which is scheduled for Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie, Texas on Nov. 6 and 7, 2015. The winner from Indiana Grand will get an all expenses paid trip to the Bank of America Challenge Championship races. The program also includes additional scholarships. Last year’s winner, Elizabeth Seely of Auburn, Ind., provided some insight into the trip she took to the Challenge races last year, which was held in Iowa at Prairie Meadows. “It was an awesome experience,” said Seely. “I met a lot of people that I still keep in contact with, and I ended up finishing third, which made the whole trip even better.” Seely also got to experience another once in a lifetime trip recently. She was one of 90,000 in attendance to watch American Pharoah win the Triple Crown at Belmont Park in early June. “My aunt lets us have a senior trip every year wherever we want to go and I chose to go to the Belmont Stakes,” said Seely. “It is really cool because my mom graduated from high school the year Affirmed won the Triple Crown and I graduated the year American Pharoah won the Triple Crown.”

Name: Holly Kiess Parents: Gina & Brian Kiess Hometown: Fort Wayne, Indiana Excerpts from Holly’s application (edited for space): Interacting with horses and riding horses is such a wonderful experience. I feel that horses are “part of me” and truly help define “who I am.” My name is Holly Kiess and I will be 16 years old in just a couple of days. I have been fortunate to spend many hours with horses since summer before third grade, when I got my first 4-H horse. Although I can honestly say that, in hindsight, all of my experiences have been valuable and have helped shape me as a person, I can’t say that, while going through those experiences, everything was so rosy.

the horses. I have a hope to be a veterinarian some day, so it would be wonderful to meet a track vet or farrier, or anyone else who is involved in the racing world. I conclusion, I would love to be accepted as a participant for the 2015 QHRAI Quarter Horse Youth Day at the Races. It sounds like a wonderful growing and learning experience that would benefit me that day and in the future.

“Buck,” my first horse, was my perfect starter horse. In our very small home arena he was the quiet, 16 year old docile horse that everyone would want their small child to begin upon. ... It was generally concluded that he used to be a contesting horse and although he was quiet at home, anything resembling a contesting arena was too much.

Runner Up

The replacement horse, “Hawk” was fortunately wonderful and I can say that he taught me to ride. He was willing, sweet and full of arthritis. I was only able to use him that year and one other.

Excerpts from Isabella’s application (edited for space): My name is Bella Wiseman, I am 17 years old and I am finishing up my junior year in Fort Wayne, Indiana. My grandfather and father have been involved in race horses their whole lives. My family has and continues to breed, raise and race Thoroughbred race horses. In addition, we have riding horses that my siblings and I compete with. I participate in show jumping and contesting shows around Indiana, Ohio, Michigan and Kentucky. My favorite discipline is western, specifically barrel racing and pole bending. I have county records and state ranking in each of these events. Aside from those competitions, I have been involved in Allen County 4-H Horse & pony Club for six years. I am the president of my horse club and have been for two years. Also, I am a horseback riding instructor where I give around eight lessons a week. Being around breeding, racing, jumping and contesting, I have innumerable experiences with every aspect of horses. I am responsible, involved with horses everyday and I enjoy it very much.

My parents bought me a large pony for year three in 4-H. By then I was a better rider and had confidence. I loved to go fast and contest but also enjoyed the pleasure and jumping activities. “Wendy” was up for the challenge to learn it all-she had already come to us as a trained jumper, but she was willing to slow down a bit for pleasure and especially rev it up for contesting. Riding Wendy was wonderful! It was with her that I learned to love speed- but speed with control, unlike my experiences with Buck. After Wendy, I was fortunate to get a pleasure horse, “Dolly,” from Findlay University. And about that time, I also got a weanling to train, who I named “Sugar.” Dolly has been a joy and puzzle to ride. She can be the most beautiful mover, especially in English performance classes. However, she suffers what appears to be bouts of depression. ... We have had her for three years and these problems continue to worsen. ... So we will likely soon be taking her to Purdue for a further work-up.

Name: Isabella Wiseman Parents: Jason & Jennifer Wiseman Hometown: Fort Wayne, Indiana

Sugar is out of ranching and roping stock, so I hope to be able to use her as an all-around horse. I started ground work with her as a weanling and have been riding her now for about 30 rides (as I write this, she is three today.)

Through my 4-H club, I heard about QHRAI’s Youth Day. It sounds like an amazing experience that I am very interested in participating in. I think it would provide me with so much knowledge and behind-thescene information about race horses. As much as I have worked with Thoroughbred horses, I have never experienced Quarter Horse racing! To work hands-on with the top trainers would be something I’ll never forget. I would like to be involved in the horse industry in my life and this would be a perfect opportunity. Thank you for your time and I hope to attend the QHRAI’s Youth Day!

I am excited to spend some time with actual jockeys, learn how the racing world works and meet other people that might be involved with

Genetic Testing - Part 1

WHAT DOES GENETIC TESTING MEAN FOR THE STALLION OWNER AND THE BREEDER breeders to breed to the same stallion creates a loss of genetic diversity. Assisted reproductive techniques such as breeding frozen semen can also amplify one individual’s influence on the gene pool. When one stallion is bred too heavily and his genetic influence goes beyond his death with frozen semen it is easy to see how one stallion can influence the gene pool with an extraordinary dose of his genes. This genetic influence will include whatever detrimental recessives he may carry, to be uncovered in later generations. Many of the genetic diseases being tested for were discovered after the originating stallion had either produced hundreds or thousands of foals or after he was deceased. Early detection of these genes before breeding is critical. Identifying and testing for these genes allows the responsible breeder to breed in a manner that while it may not rid the breed of the diseases their incidence can be greatly decreased. In the Quarter Horse breed overall, an 11% positive test rate has been found for PSSM and GBED. The incidence for HERDA in American Quarter Horses is about 3.5 percent and the HYPP incidence is about 1.5%. It was then determined that the disease-causing genes were distinctly distributed within The horse in the picture is positive for HERDA. The appearance of these diseases in our horses is due in large part to practices such as linebreeding to concentrate desirable traits. While this practice does entrench the desirable traits in a line it can also entrench some undesirable traits on a recessive gene that might be in a family line. Naturally everyone wants to breed to the most popular stallion but the tendency for many

Rain drops keep falling on my roof...da da dada dada! Yep, rain, rain, rain, can’t get hay put up, difficult to ride unless you have an indoor arena, not to mention the grass just won’t stop growing long enough for mowing to catch up. I guess we could bale the yard!!!

The Midwest Shoot Out at the Hoosier Horse Park in Edinburg, IN was a huge success! The rain on Friday made travel messy but the covered arena kept us dry & dust free! The 3 stage, Friday night warm up shoot had 47 entries, plus 1 Wrangler. This match gave shooters the chance to get in the arena and try out the size and the dirt, as many had never been there before. An Illinois cowboy, Robbie Hamm was the overall winner! Robbie and his paint pony zoomed through the 3 stages with the best time of 46.106. The top 3 were also clean shooters! Our 2nd place & overall Cowgirl was Lanae Kline from IN, 46.680. Third spot was claimed by Bobby Ruwe, OH with 48.329. Fourth place KY, Rodney Greene 49.571. Fifth John St Clair, OH total time 49.966. Sixth was Terry Martin 50.248. Seventh, Joyce Nelson, OH with 50.872. Eighth Connie Ricketts, IN 52.999. Nineth OH, Joyce McKinney 53.007 and rounding out the top 10 was Shane Pickens from IN with a final score of 53.131. Wrangler 1st place was Ian Boettcher with a 58,938 total score. It poured Friday night but sleep came easy listening the rain drops hit the trailer roof. Saturday morning awoke with cloudy skies but the rain had moved on leaving comfortable temps for the entire day. The 1st Ohio Team did a fantastic job of keeping the shoot moving and all the shooters happy. We “THANK” the extras to the team also, Terry Martin and Dave Ricketts were the Range Masters. Shane Pickens drove the tractor and kept the ground smooth & fast, these cowboys are members

Eric Nelson was the backup announcer taking over when Ken was shooting balloons. Eric also set the courses with too many helpers to mention, I might forget someone. John St Clair and Joyce McKinney opened the stalls upon your arrival. Darlene Borgman, Ann Smith & Robben Bardo worked together keeping riders at the gate and ready to go. Our office staff, Becky Ashcraft worked relentlessly keeping all the records straight, entries, who is in what, figuring paybacks, keeping $ amounts straight and in the computer, printing the checks and closing out the shoot. Yours truly, kept the scoring correct in the computer and tried to be an extra right hand for Becky. Ann, Robben and Tina Caldwell took turns writing the score sheet for a second check. Joyce Nelson, President of 1st Ohio organized the shoot and the workers, this cowgirl worked very hard and did an excellent job of keeping all the shooters happy. Our main match covered Saturday & Sunday, with 2 stages each day for the pistol shooters. Two stages of Shotgun and Rifle also shot on Saturday. We had 27 Shotgun shooters, that’s our biggest class ever. The Overall results of Shotgun; 1-Michael Smiler, MI. 2. Rodney Greene, KY. 3. Byron Walters, GA .4.Joyce McKinney, OH. 5. Favorite show? My favorite show is Edinburgh, Indiana. That is where I met my boyfriend. Tell us about your horses... I have two horses, one is a bay and his name is Redman Jet Deck, aka “Poppy.” He is 13 years old. My other horse is also a bay. Her name is CC Nifty Lady, aka “Lady/Mare.” She is 10 years old. Accomplishments: I have became really good at riding and I learn something new everyday. I do poles and barrels. I just started flags. Advice to fellow barrel racers? Never give up, always keep trying and when it gets hard you know God is on your side. Just follow your heart.

Fort Smith was fun but didn't go quite as planned. (Picture below) (Celebrating my GREAT grandpa's 95 birthday. Aloha style.)

Clint www.clintvanvolkenburgh.bodybyvi.com

Clint is a graduate of East Central High School. His parents are Terrie VanVolkenburgh and respectively Joe Trentman. He has grown up in the horse world, both parents have rode almost all their life...Clint's grandfather as some of you may remember was the late Terry VanVolkenburgh, who would run up and down the fences when his daughters would run barrels. Clint began barrel racing at the age of 4 with a pony, then went on to particpate in Jr. Rodeo and his favorite event was the sheep riding, hard to believe he is now a barrel racer. He has won the Ohio Youth NBHA and Indiana Youth and Open NBHA , he has also won the Congress youth barrel four times, and was runner up in the Congress Sweepstakes. He placed at Josey Jr. world numerous times, and won the NBHA Youth World 1D in 2006. He loves to barrel race and is now trying his hand at the futurities. In Clint's spare time he mows grass for a part time job and is also very active in his church where he and his cousins are bible school helpers. Clint also volunteers one day a week at a school in Cincinatti where he spends time tutoring other kids in reading.

The Trophy of Negativity

I

’ve seen this house on a street in every neighborhood.

It’s a dark and gloomy place. The shutters are crooked and falling. The paint is chipped and weathered. The blinds are always pulled. No one wants to knock on the door; but we all have walked up the sidewalk, climbed the steps, and stood there waiting. At times, we are welcomed by others. Some days, we are the first to arrive and we want others to join us. We are not trespassing. All are welcome. Whether alone or with “friends,” there is a room, down the dimly lit hallway, we have come to see. As we step in, we cannot believe the size of it. Trophies of past successful, death filled hunts are mounted all over the walls. The light is faint, but the names of whose hearts, minds, and souls have been taken can be read on the plaques hung in memorial. If it is your first time, you may look for your name. You may find it or it may not be there, yet. There may be an empty spot and you wonder if it might be reserved for you. If you have moved in, you know your place on the wall.

It is the house of negativity. Hanging above the mantel is what made us look forward to the next day, the next step, the rest of our life. Criticisms and complaints hunt a positive outlook, enthusiasm, hope and faith like a hunter stalks its prey. It finds the weak and strikes. It finds the injured and sets a trap. It sees the curious and baits them to come close. And, then, it kills. It kills the heart; poisons the mind; wounds the soul. I know many, who live inside the house. I know more, who hang out in the darkened rooms or sit on the front porch and invite others to join them. I do not know anyone, who has not knocked on the door, at least once. How many times have you visited?

The fire burning in the great hearth bathes it in the dancing light of its flames. It burns in all seasons; fueled by pain, failure, guilt, disappointment, self-loathing and hatred.

If we are visiting for the first time, we may ask how we got there. If we are a frequent visitor, we know we are there by choice. If we have taken up permanent residence, we do not consider the “How?” or the “Why?” We just live in the darkness.

CHRISTIAN COWBOY COLLECTION

By Christa Conway

You’ve Got to Know When to Hold’em... Some of you may read that title and it brings to mind an old county song. Maybe Kenny Rogers?? Next month we’ll talk about knowing when to fold’em, knowing when to walk away...etc. Anyway, what I want to focus on this month is how sometimes we have a hard time knowing when to hold onto something and sometimes we hold on too long. It’s similar to when you are riding a young horse and trying to teach them to give to the pressure of a bit in their mouth. Most cowboys and cowgirls with much experience know if you don’t release the pressure when the young horse responds, they’ll end up very confused, frustrated and harder to train as time goes on. In life situations sometimes we forget that same notion applies to us as Christians. We tend to want to apply pressure to those who are lost and don’t know Christ. The problem can be the same as with a young horse - if we are continually applying pressure, they will end up very confused, frustrated and harder to “train” (or teach/lead.) What we need to remember is that just like the young horse that may not be willing to accept our training.... our non-Christian (or lost) friends, may not be willing to accept our teaching/leading. James 3:3 Behold, we put bits in the horses’ mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body. In both instances the process requires a gentle hand, patience, a loving heart and a little give and take. Under the right circumstances, with prayer and patience, hopefully they will both realize we are applying that pressure because we want them to realize their full potential (in God’s love.)

INSPIRATION

When too much pressure is applied to many young horses, they will react by fighting back - so will people. Psalms 32:9 Be ye not as the horse, or as the mule, which have no understanding: whose mouth must be held in with bit and bridle, lest they come near unto thee. I have started young horses that took right to the saddle and bit and never even thought about fighting. I have also started other young horses (with the same basic program) that

Page 42

fought me every step of the way and took days or weeks to get past the bucking fits. As a horse trainer, I’ve learned not to give up on those tough ones - they usually make the best horses. It is the pressure and release and lots of patience that give them a chance to come around. And when they do, it is amazing. Job 39:19-25 19 “Do you give the horse his strength or clothe his neck with a flowing mane? 20 Do you make him leap like a locust, striking terror with his proud snorting? 21 He paws fiercely, rejoicing in his strength, and charges into the fray. 22 He laughs at fear, afraid of nothing; he does not shy away from the sword. 23 The quiver rattles against his side, along with the flashing spear and lance. 24 In frenzied excitement he eats up the ground; he cannot stand still when the trumpet sounds. 25 At the blast of the trumpet he snorts, ‘Aha!’ He catches the scent of battle from afar, the shout of commanders and the battle cry.

With our non-Christian friends it is often the same way. It is those who fought against it the hardest that eventually make the best warriors for Christ. Just two examples that should ring a bell: The Apostle Paul and C.S. Lewis. I am sure most of you have had a friend at one time or another who immediately got angry at the mention of Jesus or church. What do you do in those situations? I have learned that, like with the young horses, you most likely have to release the pressure. Spend some time in prayer, show them Christ’s love in action. God has put them on your heart for a reason. I know in the past I have been hurt by some who have ridiculed me for my faith, but I didn’t stop loving them. I just had to release the pressure for a while and try a different approach. In some cases, like we’ll talk about next month...you have to know when to fold’em, know when to walk away and know when to run;) Happy Trails & God Bless! Love in Christ, Christa

THE CAPTAIN’S CALL Captain come ridin` in His pony white as snow Said boys I’m here for my herd Yep it’s time to go

The river never rises Nor does it go dry Green grass year round Not one single blade will die

The new hand said sure do Your pony showed me the cross Never had seen anything like it Captain that’s quite a hoss

Then the Captain looked back Shouted for his crew Come on boys mount up Paw is waitin` for you

One of the new hands Asked about the drive Captain said don’t worry pard Your about to really be alive

Cowboyin` will be easy Your herd will never stampede Lot’s of time for chaw It won’t be Cookie’s feed

The Captain looked around Said all that believed in me Will be on this great drive That’s how paw said it would be

It was then the new hand Told this world goodbye Followin` that white horse And the Captain into the sky

You see we’re headed north To my paws heavenly place It’s the grandest ranch of all Nothin` but wide open space

The new hand asked the Captain Are we the only hands Captain smiled and said pard My crew is from all the lands

Then he pulled out a trumpet Said well it’s a time to go Gave his horse some iron Then the trumpet a blow

Not nery`a strand of wire No post in the ground Your pony will never stumble Nope a hole won’t be found

Remember how we met When I called you that day You humbled yourself Kneeled with me and prayed

Hands began to appear Risin` in the air The new hand praised the Captain Thankful he would be there

1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. One Last (& most important) thought… Salvation is a gift and a choice......

But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. Romans 5:15 For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Romans 10: 9-10

Jesus died on the cross as the final sacrifice for our sins. He was resurrected on the 3rd day and he defeated death and Satan for us. All we have to do is believe that He beat death, acknowledge it with our words and accept Him as our personal savior. That’s when the rebirth happens and we are changed! He then promises us eternal life with Him in Heaven! You can’t earn your way into Heaven; you have to accept His gift of salvation. So many people think they “aren’t good enough” to get to Heaven… But… Salvation is a GIFT from God and you don’t earn a gift. Gifts are given to you and for the gift to be yours, you have to accept it. All we have to do is accept this wonderful gift. I know I have…won’t you?

Son of a Nut wins first stakes race at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino

THOROUGHBRED RACING

Tasked with an outside post in the 12 horse field, Indiana Grand’s Leading Jockey Albin Jimenez wasted no time getting Son of a Nut in the early action, rolling right for the lead from the start. Son of a Nut, known for his laid back attitude in the barn, had his ears pinned and was all business as he joined Two If By Sea and Malcolm Franklin on the inside and Aye Skipper with Francisco Torres aboard on the outside as the field headed down the backstretch.

SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – June 10, 2015 – Son of a Nut just keeps on bringing in the wins. The three-year-old son of Unbridled Express kept his spotless record intact Wednesday, June 10, winning his third consecutive race and his first stakes in the $85,000 Sagamore Sired Stakes at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino. The lanky grey gelding more than doubled his career bankroll and now possesses more than $91,000 for owner Sherri Greenhill.

A surprising second choice by fans, Son of a Nut paid $9.20, $5.80 and $3.80 across the board. Jeff Greenhill trains the sophomore standout, who completed the six furlong event in a time of 1:10.06 seconds, a new stakes record in the second running of the Sagamore Stakes.

Heading into the turn, a small tap from Jimenez gave Son of a Nut the signal to advance, getting a slight edge on the competition before the stretch drive home. At the top of the stretch, he excelled into the lead and although several horses came at him for one final attempt at the lead, Son of a Nut was in full gear, striding out to a seven length advantage at the wire for his third win in as many starts. Lucky Newton and Alex Contreras first tried him on the outside and dipped down along the inside in pursuit of Son of a Nut to finish second followed closely by Aye Skipper, who maintained ground on the outside to finish third.

The next stop for Son of a Nut is still undecided by the Greenhills. “He (Son of a Nut) is as cool as the other side of the pillow,” said Greenhill. “Right now, I couldn’t tell you. I’ll have to assess the situation, look at the spots and decide later.”

“He (Son of a Nut) definitely had more energy today than he did in his last race,” said Jimenez. “There’s still more left in the tank. He’s an amazing horse.”

The 13th season of live Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse continues through Saturday, Oct. 31, 2015. Racing is conducted Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 2:05 p.m. with first post Saturdays set at 6:05 p.m.

Greenhill has a lot of experience with the family of Son of a Nut. He also trained older siblings Peanut Man, who is now enjoying a second career as a show jumper and In a Jif, who won the $60,000 Holiday Inaugural Stakes at Turfway Park in December 2014.

front. Cabby Joshtin and Israel Ocampo held their positioning along the inside while Joyous Lady and Alex Contreras kept up with the early leaders. Heading into the turn, Nevertoomanykisses got by the early leaders and led the field through the turn before being joined by the late closers in the race. In the stretch, Nevertoomanykisses dug in and fended off her top spot as Joyous Lady dipped inside for a challenge and Spooled, ridden by Malcolm Franklin, used a late surge for a big challenge. In the end, Nevertoomanykisses was victorious, winning her third straight win of 2015 by a neck over Spooled and Hay Little Bit, who used a late rally in the stretch to finish third for Jockey Francisco Torres.

Nevertoomanykisses goes gate to wire in Swifty Sired Fillies at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – June 10, 2015 – Nevertoomanykisses and jockey Oriana Rossi rallied gate to wire to win the second running of the $85,000 Swifty Sired Fillies Stakes Wednesday, June 10 at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino. The duo covered the six furlong distance in a time of 1:10.82, setting a new stakes record. Starting from the outside post eight in the nine horse field, Nevertoomanykisses moved out of the gate swiftly to get a good spot near the

Nevertoomanykisses paid $5.40, $3.40 and $2.40 across the board as the bettor’s choice. The three-year-old daughter of Checklist is owned by Deann Baer. She is now four for seven lifetime and adds the Swifty Sired Stakes as her first stakes win to her record. Tim Glyshaw is the trainer of Nevertoomanykisses, who pushed her career bankroll to more than $135,000. Rossi noted in a post race interview that Nevertoomanykisses broke more alertly than she had in the past, which helped her get into the mix early on. Rossi has ridden the horse in all seven of her lifetime starts. “Like Oriana (Rossi) said, it was the best she’s ever broke,” said Glyshaw. “You can plan all you want and going in to the race, it looked like there were three or four speed horses. The track is speed biased today, but you don’t want to be ding-donging with those horses, which is what she basically did with one of them and kept going. It just shows how nice she is.” “Well, we tried to run her long last year and it was an absolute disaster,” said Glyshaw. “I think Spooled beat her by 60 lengths. I think we’ll definitely be in the six furlong sired stakes.”

Tiz Shea D wins Grade II $500,000-added Indiana Derby By Tammy Knox Tiz Shea D and Jockey Jose Lezcano used a perfectly timed move to rally home for the win in the 21st running of the Grade II $500,000-added Indiana Derby presented by the Indy Star Saturday, July 18 at Indiana Grand. The race was the highlight of the program that featured six stakes with purses in excess of $1 million. Starting from post three, Tiz Shea D appeared to leave the gate with some speed but was no match for Mr. Z who powered out along the inside for jockey Joe Bravo. Mr. Z had the top spot secured as expected before the eight-horse field hit the first turn, leading the way over a racetrack that had become sloppy due to heavy rains earlier in the night. Heading down the backstretch, Mr. Z was in full control of the fractions as Tiz Shea D sat patiently behind through early fractions of :24.21, $48.31 and 1:11.64 during the one and one-sixteenth mile race. Around the turn, Mr. Z still had the field at his heels and appeared to be primed and ready for the stretch drive home when he swung wide at the top of the stretch and was immediately joined by Tiz Shea D on the outside and Divining Rod and Alex Cintron on the inside.

THOROUGHBRED RACING

Midway through the stretch, the field began to tighten up and Tiz Shea D got a head in front but Mr. Z fought back between horses, creating an exciting scenario to the finish line. In the end, Tiz Shea D was able to move ahead for the win by one and one-quarter length over Mr. Z, whose saddle had slipped forward in the stretch. Divining Rod finished a head back in third. The time of the race was 1:42.51. “He (Tiz Shea D) has been working very good,” said Lezcano. “He broke good and got right in the position I wanted to be in. We let the one (Mr. Z) go and sat right behind him. At the top of the stretch, Mr. Z came out and we went a little wider, but he recovered very quickly and fought hard in the stretch.” Tiz Shea D came into the Indiana Derby off a second place finish in an allowance race at Belmont Park. Lezcano, who has more than 2,100 career wins and is a leading rider on the New York circuit, has ridden the horse for Trainer Bill Mott in his previous two starts, including a fourth place finish in the Grade II Peter Pan Stakes at Belmont in early May. “This horse just came in from New York the other day so I give all the credit to the New York crew,” said Kenny McCarthy, assistant trainer to Mott. “Looking at the (Daily Racing) Form, the horse showed speed. Mr. Z is a great horse. Our horse got a little breather down the backstretch, but he raced very well tonight.” Tiz Shea D paid $10.80, $5.40 and $3.40 across the board as the third choice in the race. The three-year-old son of Tiznow is owned by Brous Stable, Wachtel Stable and Gary Barber. He now has two wins in six starts and increased his career bankroll to more than $464,000. Tiz Shea D was unraced at two for Mott, who is best known as the trainer of the great racehorse Cigar, who retired as the sports richest racehorse ever

info@itoba.com Page 48

with nearly $10 million in earnings. This was the first win in the Indiana Derby for both Lezcano and Mott. The Indiana Derby capped off a great evening with a full house in attendance. A total of 12, 304 were on property at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino during the night and the race brought in a total of $521,260 in wagering, which showed an increase of more than $100,000 from the previous year. Total handle for the 10-race card was $1,773,565, also showing more than a $100,000 increase from the 2014 event. “Indiana Grand is becoming a national force in Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing,” said Jim Brown, President and COO of Centaur, Inc. and General Manager of Indiana Grand. “Our racing attendance and wagering is up over 25 percent this year. We continue to build and improve our racing product and the entire Indiana Grand experience.” The Indiana Derby and the Indiana Oaks were both broadcast live on WISH TV Channel 8 based in Indianapolis. Anthony Calhoun, WISH TV Sports Director, and Peter Lurie, nationally known racing analyst, co-hosted the hour long show. In addition to the two races, the program included features on Indiana racing as well as a behind the scenes look at the preparation that goes into a race at Indiana Grand. “I think we took another huge step forward this year in Indiana racing and with the Indiana Derby,” said Jon Schuster, vice president and general manager of Indiana Grand. “We continue to be very pleased with the community support of our event and are thrilled with such an outstanding, enthusiastic crowd that came out to watch this year’s race. The addition of WISH TV broadcasting the race live this year and the partnership with Indy Star and other sponsors has really boosted our entire Indiana Derby event.” Live Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing continues at Indiana Grand through Saturday, Oct. 31. Racing is conducted Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday at 2:05 p.m. with Saturday evening post at 6:05 p.m. Thursday racing will be added beginning Sept. 17.
