LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

H

appy summer!! (Well, almost anyway!!) I am so happy to see the sunshine and feel the warm weather! I promise I won’t complain when the sweat beads are dripping into my eyes while I am doing barn chores! I promise, I promise.....bring on the heat and if that means humidity too, well I love package deals!!! It’s been business as usual around here at the ranch. Breeding season is coming to a close, so that will be one less check mark I have to make on my list everyday until next year. I hope everyone had much success with their stallions and I hope that everyone has healthy, happy babies this year. We had a couple of foals born here at the ranch and were able to share the awesome experience with our kids for the first time. Not to mention my mom, who had never been present during the appearance of a newborn foal (even though she has been involved with horses all of her life.) She was speechless and so were the kids. This leads me to mention that we have included some BABIES this month! If you have some babies and you’d like to share pictures with our readers.....send them in and we’ll try to include everyone’s pictures!!

We also have a new addition here at the ranch....kind of a new “mascot” if you will. He came to us in order to be a companion for our stallion, Six. He is a miniature donkey and his name is “Seven.” So now we have “Six” and “Seven” and hopefully you’ll find humor, as I did, in the fact that our daughter says he is a very mean donkey....you guessed it....because “Seven, Eight, Nine.” I couldn’t resist!! Show season is in full swing and though we’ve had a recent scare with the EVH-1 virus (check our website or facebook page for up to date and/ or relevant news regarding this), most are enjoying their summer travels. Ft. Smith is ready to be underway as I am finishing up this issue and storms are sweeping across the Midwest. I hope and pray for safe travels for all of our friends on the road this time of year! Until next month........pack whatcha need.........drive safe........then count your blessings on horseback! God Bless and Ride Safe, Christa Conway

A Little “Barrel Talk”

More great suggestions and recipes found on Barrel Horse World’s Barrel Talk.....Enjoy! (Just remember - The Horse Resource is not endorsing these “remedies.” We recommend that you consult your veterinarian before using any home remedy on your horse.) ghost rider Posted 2011-02-16 12:53 PM We use Listerine in our feed room in the summertime to keep out mosquitoes, flies, & moths...just pour it in a big spray bottle & spritz the feed room when we first go in at night. Smells better than commercial fly sprays & the best part is it doesn’t matter if it gets on hay or feed. We also keep a bottle outside the doors we use at the house to keep bugs from getting in when we open the door.

3) Baking soda mixed with enough witch hazel to make a paste 4) Table sugar mixed with enough Betadine to make a paste Sore/brusied soles: Table sugar mixed with enough Betadine to make a paste (place in microwave 45 sec and let set 1 min before applying) Place mixture in soles cover with foil then with vet wrap Colicing/tying up horse: pour 1/2 cup of liquid Turpentine into a disposable cup and place cup under horses belly

ClassicCowgirl Posted 2011-02-16 9:17 PM Leg Tightening Linament (in a 1 gal jug mix) 1/3 - Listerine 1/3 - Rubbing Alchohol 1/3 - Absorbine Homemade Poultice: 1) Mix Epsom salts with enough warm water to make a paste 2) Kaopectate mixed with enough flour to make a paste

tee Posted 2011-02-19 8:00 AM Remedies from the old guys-they work! For cuts use ‘unrefined honey’ & wrap, once the wound stops seeping make a mixture of powdered sugar and water to make thick paste-and cover wound, do not wrap. You can actually see it healing every day! And there’s no infection-honey has a natural antibiotic. Also, gave it to a filly in her feed, she ran a post in her-from the under side of girth area to all but coming out the front of her neck-it

missed all arteries, put 1/4 to 1/2 cup of ‘unrefined honey’ in her feed-with in 30 days it was healed and hardly any scaring on the outside-the vet was blown away! Unrefined honey is honey that has not been processed it’s not the honey you buy for on your biscuits.. Cider vinegar-can be used with heat & ice. For leg braceold time racehorse people used this: cut a paper bag in strips or a leg wrap & soak it in ‘Cider Vinegar’ place it on the leg-cover with saran wrap, leg wrap, polo wrap. Will pull out all soreness. This is also good on human burns & bruises-it pulls out soreness & if done soon enough after a burn the burn will not blister and there will be no scarring. ladyjockey Posted 2011-02-22 • castor oil for scar tissue, wind puffs, can soak polo wrap and wrap it or paint on every day IT WORKS • clean trax, soak for abcesses, it kills the bacteria • white vinegar, use for unruly manes and tails

New Exhibitor Recognition The American Quarter Horse Journal

-- The American Quarter Horse Association will be recognizing a new level of exhibitors at four of its world championship shows this year. At the 2011 Built Ford Tough AQHYA, Adequan Select, Bank of America Amateur and Fedex Open world championship shows, AQHA will recognize the top three Intermediate exhibitors in each youth, amateur, Select and open class. “This is a great way to introduce some of the show or competitionleveling concepts that AQHA has been exploring over the last couple of years,” said AQHA President Peter J. Cofrancesco III. “Recognizing the Intermediate exhibitor is a way to shine the spotlight on exhibitors who have worked hard to qualify for our world shows and are tough competitors at our world shows year after year, but don’t make it into the top 10.” An Intermediate exhibitor at the AQHA world shows is defined as follows: •

An exhibitor who has never been in the top 10 at a world show in the particular class in which they are competing. Halter classes (including performance halter) will be all-inclusive, meaning any top-10 placing in halter, regardless of sex division (ex. a top-10 finisher in 3-year-old geldings is not considered an Intermediate exhibitor in any halter class even though he/she might have placed outside of the top 10 in a different halter class). Open performance classes will be the same. For example, AQHA will not separate junior reining from senior reining, or junior western pleasure from senior western pleasure, for purposes of determining if an exhibi-

Page 16

News tor is an Intermediate. However, AQHA will recognize the Intermediate exhibitors in each of the junior and senior open classes.) • Intermediate will run as classes within classes, not separate. AQHA will not bring back the top Intermediate riders for a rideoff or in a separate class. • Intermediate exhibitor status is based only on an exhibitor’s lifetime, combined world show record, not on the number of points he/she has accumulated. • An exhibitor does not have to make it to the finals of his/her class to be considered for an Intermediate award. • There is no entry fee or nomination procedure for an exhibitor to be considered for an Intermediate award. • The awards will be called the AQHA Intermediate champion, AQHA Intermediate reserve champion and the AQHA Intermediate third place. • Intermediate accomplishments also will appear on the exhibitor’s and horse’s AQHA official record. The Intermediate exhibitor recognition package will include an 8-inch clear globe for first place and 6-inch clear globes for second and third place. Each Intermediate champion will also receive a specially designed patch that can be placed on a qualifiers jacket that can be purchased by the exhibitor. The top three Intermediate exhibitors will also have the option to purchase a championship buckle. AQHA news and information is a service of AQHA publications. Adequan Select World Qualifying Deadline Extended The American Quarter Horse Journal –

Due to the recent outbreak of equine herpesvirus-1, many horse shows have experienced reduced exhibitor numbers and some shows – particularly National Cutting Horse Association events – have been canceled. As a result, the AQHA Executive Committee has extended to June 26 the Adequan Select World Championship Show qualifying period, which was to end May 31. This step is in addition to lowering the Adequan Select World qualifying points, which the Executive Committee announced on May 18. Additionally, due to the cancellations of all cutting events through June 5, qualifying points for Select cutting have been lowered to one-half point, and AQHA will continue to monitor future cancellations based on NCHA’s recommendations. “Several major shows held this last weekend experienced drastically reduced exhibitor numbers,” said AQHA President Peter J. Cofrancesco III. “Major shows in California, Colorado, Idaho, New Mexico, Montana, Texas, Washington, Alberta and other states or provinces have had low exhibitor turn out and some in those locations have already canceled shows scheduled for this weekend. “A report from the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service is expected late Thursday afternoon,” Cofrancesco said. “We are confident that report will provide the industry with better numbers and a truer perspective as we look at the upcoming weekend. Hopefully, fewer incidents will have been reported, which should help ease horse owners’ minds.” As has been mentioned, even for shows that have not been canceled, many exhibitors are unwilling to risk their horse’s health and travel.

Page 17

While most shows held east of the Mississippi River have not seen any noticeable reduction in exhibitor numbers, asking exhibitors to drive farther-than-expected distances or to risk any possible exposure is not the responsible course of action to take at this time. Several major circuits are slated for June, including but not limited to the Redbud Classic in Oklahoma, Nebraska’s Cornhusker Classic, the Tar Heel Triple Classic and North Carolina Jamboree. “Hopefully, this additional move by the AQHA Executive Committee will give Select exhibitors the opportunity to qualify,” Cofrancesco said. “Points earned between June 1 and June 26 will count twice for Select exhibitors – once for the 2011 show and again for the 2012 show. “Other than supporting NCHA’s decision to cancel its cutting events for a period of time, there have not and, at this time, we do not expect there to be any mandatory cancellations of AQHA shows – all have been voluntary, and we support our show managers’ responsible decision to cancel,” he added. “Because of the numerous show cancellations, this has created a hardship for some exhibitors trying to finish qualifying for the Adequan Select World – even with the lowering of qualifying points. We have listened and want to support our horse owners who choose not to travel. Horse activities should be fun and safe for exhibitors and horses hoping to make it to Amarillo for the Adequan Select World. AQHA hopes to underscore that philosophy by taking these steps.” On Wednesday, May 25, the AQHA Executive Committee approved the following recommendations for the Adequan Select World only (the Bank of America Amateur and Fedex Open world shows will continue to be monitored for any impact): • • • •

Continue with the lowered qualifying points Extend Select qualifying through June 26 Due to the cancellation of all cutting events through June 5, lower the qualifying points for cutting to one-half point and continue to monitor future cancellations based on NCHA’s recommendations. Based on the extension of the Select qualifying period, this means about 375-400 additional shows/sets of points will be taken into consideration during this extension. The Executive Committee has decided to allow these shows to count twice – once for 2011 qualifying and again in 2012, considering the extenuating circumstances.

AQHA’s competition department staff, working with the Executive Committee, will continue to monitor shows and any potential effect on qualifying for November’s Bank of America Amateur and FedEx Open world championship shows. Qualifying for those events continues through July 31. Get more information about equine herpesvirus-1 at www.aqha.com. AQHA news and information is a service of AQHA publications. June 2011 Newsletter The Quarter Horse Meet at Indiana Downs is off to a great start this year. The track seems to be fairly even, entries are going great, we are attracting nationally recognized talent, and the stats are starting to accumulate quickly. Unfortunately we had a rainout (some may call it worse than that) on May 23rd and 2 Quarter Horse races could not be run, but the QHRAI staff worked quickly with Indiana Downs Race Secretary, Butch Cook, and were able to get those races back on the card in just a few days. A lot has happened for Quarter Horse Racing already and its still early in the meet. We had 2 great days of Schooling races with 39 starters on April 16th and 38 starters on May 5th. QHRAI sponsored these two days to allow 2 year olds and non started horses to gain experience and earn their gate approval with an official work for a 250 yard dash. Those who participated enjoyed pizza and soft drinks compliments of Q.H.R.A.I. Many thanks to Indiana Downs Track Manager Jon Schuster, Racing Secretary Butch Cook, and the entire Racing Staff who made it possible for us to run these schooling races. Entries - Quarter Horse Races fill quickly on entry day, generally much quicker than the TB races. QHRAI directors were able to negotiate with Indiana Downs Racing Secretary, Butch Cook, to close QH entries at 10:30 a.m.. Closing entries at this time allow the QH jockeys and trainers to complete the draw by 11:30, rather than having to wait for the TB entries to close, which is often after noon.

If you don’t nominate you can’t run!!! Legislative Update – Whew!! If you haven’t heard, we escaped this legislative session basically unscathed, with the exception of the Smoking Cessation moneys that will be withheld prior to the overall money distribution to the various breeds. Your executive committee of the QHRAI worked diligently and wisely to lay the groundwork for Quarter Horses to remain a viable racing investment in Indiana. Because of these efforts, the Racing Quarter Horse Industry in Indiana will continue to maintain purse levels at Hoosier Park similar to what we are running for at Indiana Downs. Race Comission/Breed Development – Earlier this year, the commission approved the Breed Development proposal for races and purses at Indiana Downs, and approved the basic race structure for Hoosier Park. The purse structure was not approved for Hoosier Park, pending the outcome of this legislative session. Upon learning the outcome of the legislation session, Brian Elmore, GM of Racing at Hoosier Park requested and received approval for the Quarter Horse Breed Development purse structure. The QHRAI is working closely

Stakes Nominations at Indiana Downs - We made the transition to the new process for stake race nomination and payments for the Indiana Downs stakes. The entries for all stakes races at Indiana Downs are great. Trials are coming up in June for what will be some of the largest QH stake race purses in Indiana. Thanks to everyone who has been so receptive to this new process. As a new process, we have identified some ways to make improvements and will implement these changes for the Hoosier Park Stakes program and continue to evaluate ways to make the process as streamlined as possible!! The Hoosier Park Stakes Nomination schedule will be announced soon on the QHRAI.NET website and in a direct mailing to our horsemen. The process will be similar to the process we used at Indiana Downs. Be aware and DON’T GET LEFT OUT of the great

QHRAI News One Tough Dude catches champion aged mare Spit Curl Diva in Indiana Downs Classic Story by: Michelle Collins Photos by: Lori Ritz / Coady Photography

Racing for owner Hector Manuel Belloso and trained by Jesus Gonzalez, Jr., One Tough Dude picked up $46,794 after completing the 350 yards in :17.634 seconds. Ridden by Harold Collins, the Corona Cartel 5-year-old earned a 103 speed index.

ake no mistake about it, at 11 minutes after 10 p.m. on Saturday, May 21st, the most prestigious field of Quarter horses ever assembled in Indiana history exploded from the starting gate at Indiana Downs. The field blazed down the track in a near track record setting time and, as is the norm in QH racing, a magnified photo finish strip was needed to determine the winner in the $85,000 Indiana Downs Classic, a race open to the world for 4 year old and up American Quarter horses. One of the most successful and fastest growing horse racing programs in the world (the Indiana QH race program) attracted not only the best horses from all over the Midwest but from around the country. The field included multiple track record holder and AQHA Champion Aged Mare; Spit Curl Diva. This 5 year old mare made her last start in the crowned jewel for aged Quarter Horses, the Champion of Champions at Los Alamitos in December and touted earnings of over $700,000. The field also included multiple graded stakes winners including, Struttin High earner of over $275,000; Cruzin to Victor an Iowa invader with a bankroll of $289,000; Bold Badon, earner of over $165,000; Fearless Fred, a terror in the Midwest winning 11 of 18; One Tough Dude, multiple stakes winner of over $143,000. E.D. Calvert bred the sorrel gelding in Oklahoma from the First Down Dash mare Start The Commotion.

Page 20

Earners of over 1.8 million dollars loaded into the gate, and it was no surprise that heavily favored Spit Curl Diva took a commanding lead from post position 2, she looked like a winner at the half way point ahead by over ½ length. But Harold Collins was aboard a rocket zooming down the center of the track, One Tough Dude was second , and with a perfectly timed tap with the stick One Tough Dude caught and passed Spit Curl Diva in the last 10 yards. Wow, what a horse race, Struttin High was flying from the 10 hole to finish 3rd, One Tough Dude earned over $46,000 and a 103 speed index for his efforts putting his lifetime earnings over $180,000. Trained by the very young Jesus Gonzalez Jr., who just recently got his trainers license and certainly had his horse ready to throw the big race on this night. Jesus credits Harold Collins for a great patient ride and the owner Hector Manuel Belloso for allowing him to condition such a nice horse. One Tough Dude is sired by Corona Cartel and out of Start the Comotion by First Down Dash, his connections expect Hoosiers to see a lot more of him in 2011. The remaining order of finish starting with fourth was Bold Badon, Fearless Fred, Quickflyin Elin, Got Courage, Cruzin to Victory, The Star Alert and Eye Am A Star.

QHRAI News Racing for his owner/breeder, Air Born Leader popped out of the gate cleared the field and coasted over a one length victory in the $105,700 Born Runner Classic Stakes Saturday May 21st.

Air Born Leader

dominates in The Born Runner Classic Story by: Michelle Collins Photos by: Lori Ritz / Coady Photography Picking up his first win in two starts this season, the 3-yearold completed the 350 yards in :18.080 seconds into a slight headwind. Shanley Jackson rode the Thomas Mosley, Jr. trainee who earned $58,145 for the effort.

S

aturday night also offered another big stake, the second running of the Born Runner Classic, this race offered $100,000 added and had a gross purse over $105,000. The race was for 3 year olds and up Indiana Sired horses. There were 2 trials on May 6th and the top 10 qualifiers were running for the big purse on a beautiful night at Indiana Downs. The field consisted of Indiana’s 2011 horse of the year HQH Cash Bandit with earnings over $150,000 and fastest qualifier; Havana Gold who ran 2nd in this same race last year and is undefeated in 2011 with earnings just under $100k and CT Leader who won this race a year ago and has earnings of over $120,000. Prior to the gates opening these three seemed to be the ones to watch. But there was a second qualifier from the Mosley stable, a lightly raced 3 year old named Air Born Leader who had other ideas. At 10:34 pm the gates popped and unlike the exciting close race in the Indiana Downs Classic, there was very little drama to this race, Air Born Leader exploded to an early lead and had nearly 2 lengths on the field half way through the race. Shanley Jackson was taking no chances with his mount, keeping him to task until wrapping him up 75 yards from the wire and won easily by better than a length. This was the first stakes win for the winning pilot Shanley Jackson, “I’ve been close with seconds and thirds but it feels great to get over the hump in such a big race.” The winning trainer Tom Mosley qualified two into the finals; running fourth with CT Leader (last year’s winner of this same race). “It was

a great night for all of us, Michelle, Shanley, Rodney and Gerardo, we have a great team and everything came together at the right time. I am very lucky to train for the owners of both of these horses, Randy and Marg Thompson. They have a great breeding program and raise nice babies. You just couldn’t ask for better people to work for. Air Born Leader showed a lot of talent as a 2yr old, he won his first out by over a length and ran a 90 finishing second in his next out but he had a small physical issue that the Thompsons had taken care of at the end of last year. We rehabbed him at the farm and it was easy to see how much better he was moving. He is a big tall horse and still a bit immature looking, I think he has a super bright future in Indiana.” Air Born Leader’s record is now 7 starts, 2-2-0 with earnings of over $75,000. Finishing 2nd was HQH Cash Bandit, 3rd Havana Gold, CT Leader, Mc Dashin Lil Angel, I Can Lead Too Yawl, Six Figure Leader, Cigars Streakin Moon, Bobs Birthday Boy and Im a Rare Charm.

Bred by Thompson from the Born Runner mare Air Born Jazz, the gray Leader of The Class gelding came into the race with the second fastest qualifying time after just missing in the May 6th trials. In two seasons Air Born Leader has earned more than $75,000.

Owned by Ed Melzer of Edmond, Okla. and trained by Eddie Willis, Streakin Down crossed the finish in :21.005 seconds to better the 440-yard mark set by Chances Are I Wil, :21.068, in the 2008 Remington Park Championship. Jockey Jimmy Brooks had the ride. Bred in Texas by Marcus Smith, Streakin Down is a 4-year-old gelding by Streakin Sixes from the Heza Fast Man mare First Lady Amber. He has now won 10 races from 20 career starts, five of the wins taking place at Remington Park. The trial winnings of $6,000 moved the lifetime earnings for Streakin Down to $692,388. Streakin Down defeated the sport’s all-time leading money earner by a head as Stolis Winner was second in the first trial. Stolis Winner was making his first start at Remington Park since winning the $1,000,000 Heritage Place Futurity in 2008. He would go on to win the All American Futurity later that year. Stolis Winner posted a trial time of :21.036, which also bettered the old 440-yard record. Owned by Jerry Windham of College Station, Texas and trained by Heath Taylor, Jacky Martin had the call on Stolis Winner. his first huge stakes victory took place as a 2-year-old, American Quarter Horse Racing’s all-time leading money earner Stolis Winner posted victory in Sunday’s Grade 2, $107,190 Bank of America Oklahoma Championship. Owned and bred in Texas by Jerry Windham of College Station, Texas and trained by Heath Taylor, Stolis Winner was ridden to victory by Jacky Martin. Stolis Winner returned to the Remington Park winner’s circle for the first time since gathering his first really big stakes race check when he won the $1,000,000 Heritage Place Futurity as a 2-yearold at Remington Park in 2008. The 5-year-old gelding went on to win the sport’s richest race, the All American Futurity, later that year. Stolis Winner reached down for more in the Oklahoma Championship as he was fourth in the field of 10, midway through the 440-yard race Sunday. Displaying tremendous determination, his run accelerated over the final 200 yards to gain the lead and maintain victory by a half-length over top qualifier Streakin Down who had set the 440-yard track record in a trial for the Oklahoma Championship. Stolis Winner ran second in the same trial on April 24 with his personal race time also faster than the prior track record at the distance, even though he was the runner-up. Taylor was very pleased with the effort Stolis Winner displayed in the win. “We’re excited for the horse especially with all the adversity he’s been through the past couple of years,” Taylor noted. “To come back at this level as a 5-year-old to win a grade 2 race against this quality of horses is much more fulfilling. It’s not even about the money or the purse with him. He has the record and once they make as much as he has you don’t really keep track anymore. Now it is about him winning the race.” Martin was confident of Stolis Winner running a big race when they stepped on the racetrack. “He acted like a 2-year-old during the post parade, bucking and playing and really on his toes,” Martin noted. “When he left the gate the others had a half-length or three-quarters of a length in front of him. He’s still good enough to make it up and he can really get that quarter-mile.” Stolis Winner handled the 440-yards of the Oklahoma Championship in :21.699 seconds over the fast track. Away at 5-2 in the wagering, he paid $7 to win, $2.80 to place and $3.20 to show. Streakin Down paid $2.20 to place and $2.20 to show as the beaten 3-5 betting favorite. Mr Truly Uno was third and paid $4.80 to show.

Bred in Louisiana by David and Karen Richardson, Flying Bye Here is a 4-year-old colt by Dashin Bye from the Chicks Beduino mare Sign Here Please. He made $14,824 Sunday to bump his lifetime bankroll to $54,965.

A daughter of Mr Jess Perry from the Dash For Cash mare Fearless Freda, Fredaville won her eighth career race from 25 attempts while keeping her local record unblemished at three-for-three. The winner’s check of $21,200 moved her career earnings to $159,401. DOCS DUSTY OKIE SETS NEW TRACK RECORD AT 550yds

Dead Heat

Docs Dusty Okie

OKLAHOMA CITY - Docs Dusty Okie won Friday night’s (May 13,

2011) $28,000 Aggie Stakes at 550 yards and set a new track record for the distance in the process. In crossing the finish in :26.346 seconds over a fast track, Docs Dusty Okie broke the oldest track record for a normally run distance during the American Quarter Horse & Mixed-breed Season at Remington Park. The old mark of :26.600 seconds was set by Take This in 1998. The oldest track record for a regularly run distance during this season at Remington Park now belongs to past distance champ Snowbound Superstar whose 870-yard mark was established in 2009. Owned and bred in Oklahoma by the Dusty Rose Ranch of Oklahoma City and trained by Monty Brooks, Docs Dusty Okie was ridden by G.R. Carter. The 4-year-old gelding won his second consecutive race, battling back from an early deficit while moving from his inside post position to catch Looks Royal in the final 100 yards before winning by a half-length. Looks Royal held second with Granite Moon another length back in third. The win was the second straight this season for Docs Dusty Okie, an Oklahoma-bred son of Okey Dokey Dale from the Hy Lucky Jay (tb) mare Stephanie Rose. He adds the Aggie Stakes to his win at 660 yards in the Blazer Stakes on April 29. This was the sixth career win from 23 attempts and his fifth score overall at Remington Park for Docs Dusty Okie. The winner’s check for the Aggies Stakes was worth $16,500, pushing his career earnings to $148,330.

SUNDAY FEATURE SHARED BY A PAIR IN DEAD-HEAT FINISH OKLAHOMA CITY - Sunday’s $21,600 allowance feature at Remington Park, for older runners going 300 yards, ended in dead-heat fashion with two runners claiming the victory. JA Call Collect and Pica Wild Rose met at the finish line together, posting a time of :15.308 seconds over the fast track. Owned by Los Primitos of Mission, Texas and trained by Judd Kearl, JA Call Collect had the lead early in the event under Oscar Delgado and tried with every effort to be the sole winner but had to share when Pica Wild Rose rallied to get to the line simultaneously. Owned by Cynthia & Charles Warren, Sr. of Eufaula, Okla. and trained by Guillermo Valdivia, Pica Wild Rose reached dead-heat win status under G.R. Carter.

Page 26

JA Call Collect paid $5 to win while Pica Wild Rose, who was the 5-2 wagering favorite, paid $4 to win. For each runner it was their third career victory and their second win at Remington Park. JA Call Collect is a California-bred by First Down Dash from the Runaway Winner mare Runaway Vike, the 4-year-old horse made $8,220 to run his career earnings to $32,340. Pica Wild Rose is a 3-year-old Oklahoma-bred filly by Thingamajig (tb) from the Special Leader mare Pica Leader. She also earned $8,220 for her share of the win to move her lifetime bankroll to $38,264.

I REPEAT: “Rain, Rain, GO AWAY!!

Last month in the May issue, I took the time to introduce you to the rest of the doggie-crew here at the ranch because the rain had kept us from having too many adventures....and it seems that hasn’t changed much as I write this month’s article. The introductions may come in handy as you continue reading. I’ve had to do some serious concentrating here at the ranch to get some material and believe it or not, it wasn’t that hard once I started looking around at these other creatures who live here with me.

Miss Annabelle with the extra wide and extra long body and the super short legs got part of the way into her stroll and realized that she was stuck. Think of Woolly mammoths in a tar pit...... that paints a pretty good picture of the situation Little Miss “Thang” had gotten herself into. She would try to lift a foot and realize each time that her belly was already pressed into the mud too far to make any kind of attempt at escape. I really hate to admit it, but I have to give the little diva some credit.... She didn’t put too much effort into her escape before she gave out a sharp “YIP.” You realize Woolly mammoths are extinct, right? I think it was because they never learned how to “YIP” just right. Had they learned the “YIP” and had they trained a person to come at said “YIP,” they may still be around. You see, Annie has a person who carries her around like a baby. And as soon as Annie made a plea for help....her help came running.... right through the mud. Her person almost got stuck in the mud while rescuing the little mud-covered wiener. They both came out of the incident a mess. Princess Annabelle came out with legs that looked like tree trunks because they were caked with the mud and her hero almost lost a boot more than once during the ordeal - and of course was then covered in mud after carrying the little mudball to safety. I’m not sure what the moral of this story is or if there is one, except that everyone needs a good laugh now and then.....and I got one that day. Until next month.... I’ll be working on my “YIP.”

We’ll start with a funny story about our little Princess.... Here at the ranch we have an arena that is meant for horse riding and training. It is usually nice and soft and worked up for the horses, however this is not a good mix after a downpour of rain. “Miss Priss” found this out as she went for a stroll out around the second barrel the other day after a torrential rain had left water standing everywhere.

Angular Limb Deformities in Foals

Article By Dr. Steve Fisch, DVM Running on straight and correct legs gives our equine athletes the best opportunity to get where they are going in the least amount of time. Straight and correct legs also gives them the best chance of not having lameness problems with sore joints, strained or torn ligaments or other problems caused by having out of balance bones and joints. What can we do to give our equine athletes the best chance at running on straight and correct legs? The first step is to always select the most conformationally correct sire and dam for your foal as possible. Conformation, both good and bad, is highly heritable.

Pictures provided by AVS Equine Hospital

grams IV) of tetracycline. Tetracycline at this dose binds calcium in the blood stream and allows the contracted tendons to relax. This treatment has a lesser per cent chance of being successful if given when the baby is older so once again early detection and treatment is the key to success. It is important not to confuse a “contracted tendon” foal with a foal that is “over at the knees”. Giving tetracycline to a foal that is over at the knees will not correct the problem and may make it worse. The cause of “over at the knees” is the joint capsule and the structures that support the caudal or back of the knee or carpus are too tight. This deformity can usually be corrected by putting After we have done a good job at selecting good a cast on the legs from just below the elbows to just below the fetlocks. The cast Left: Foal with moderate “carpus valgus” left front and mild “carpus valgus” right shifts the weight bearing from the tendons and ligaments to the cast. front and toeing out on both front feet. This shifting of the weight bearing Right: Same carpus valgus/toed out foal post “periosteal stripping” surgery. allows the joint capsule, ligaments and other supporting structures to relax. After forty eight to seventy two hours these structures are usually relaxed enough so that the carpus (knee) can rest in its normal position. Another problem can be foals that have feet that turn out but turned out feet can also be normal. Some foals that have narrow chests will toe out but will eventually become normal as their chests widen and the legs turn in as the chest widens. However some foals turn out excessively and most of the time glue on shoes with medial toe extensions will cause the foal to orient his legs in the correct direction. These shoes are left on ten to fourteen days depending on the age of the foal. It is best to leave the foal and the mare in a stall for those ten to fourteen days as the shoes will come off if they get stuck in the mud.

parents for our foals the next step is to evaluate the foal for correctness in conformation on the day it is born. Many conformation faults such as a mild case of carpus valgus or “knocked kneed” will correct themselves with stall rest if the deformity is recognized early. Some deformities such as tendons that

Page 30

are too lax require the opposite treatment and that is to be turned out to get some exercise. The lax tendons will respond to the exercise by tightening up. However depending on the severity of the laxity, the foal may need to be turned out in periods of an hour or two so that he doesn’t over exercise the lax tendons and ligaments before they are ready to support his legs moving as he runs and plays in a large paddock or pasture. The key to having straight and correct legs is to check over your foals legs and watch them walk at least two or three times a week. In the first few weeks it is even more important to check the foal’s legs every day because a straight legged foal can change to a foal with an angular limb deformity in a

day’s time. If the foal is allowed to bounce around on crooked legs then the deformity will usually get worse. A deformity such a “contracted tendons” or clubbed foot can many times be corrected in the first few days of life if given a large dose (3

For deformities that are too severe or are identified too late for conservative therapy, surgery can many times be a successful alternative. In the case of a clubbed footed foal, an “inferior check ligament desmotomy” surgery will most of the time result in the foot returning to the correct angle with P1, P2 and P3 being in correct alignment if the deformity is detected early enough. The inferior check ligament is cut and

growth plate. This takes the tension of the periosteum off the short side of the radius and allows the short side to catch up in growth with the long side of the radius. Depending on how severe the deformity is, it could be corrected anywhere from a few days time up to a month’s time. The foal is kept in a stall during this time.

Left: Photo of foal with bilateral “clubbed foot” or “contracted tendons.” Right: Same foal post “Inferior check ligament desmotomy” surgery. This foal’s deformity was too severe to treat successfully with IV tetracycline. this allows the deep digital flexor tendon to relax and P3 to return to its correct position. If need be an extension is added to the toe to aid the foot to protect the already worn down toe. The foal is hand walked and the leg is wrapped for two weeks. The leg is stretched out in front of the foal for twenty second intervals several times a day. The stretching not only stretches the deep digital flexor tendon but it decreases adhesion formation at the site of the check ligament transaction.

If the carpus valgus or knock kneed foal or the bow legged or carpus varus foal does not respond to conservative therapy, many times a periosteal stripping surgery will allow the affected leg to straighten itself. A periosteal stripping surgery actually cuts the covering of the radius (periosteum) at the

Ask The Vet

We have gone over the most common angular limb deformities in young foals. Most of these cases will have good results with early detection and treatment. Besides good breeding, the key to straight and correct legs is an at least three to four times weekly walking through the foals’ pasture with a careful evaluation of each foal by looking at +him from each side and evaluating him while he is still and in motion. This attention to detail can pay off big time when your foals are in competitions during their adult life. Waiting until they are adults to correct these problems is waiting too late. Taking care of your foals legs is truly one case where an ounce of prevention (early detection and as conservative treatment as possible) is worth a pound of cure.

T-shirt, the word just sounds so plain & casual. It says I’m great for cleaning in, running in or doing laundry in. However if you stop by Ropes & Rhinestones you might just fall in love with their graphic t-shirt collection.

I’m sharing my four favorite designs, thank you Alicia of Ropes & Rhinestones for giving me the inside scoop on these T’s. Up first is this awesome Wild West themed graphic t-shirt. It’s close to my heart because I own a black & white paint mare that looks similar to this one rearing up. This shirt is loaded with rhinestones & studs. It would look great at a horse show with a pair of red cowboy boots & some jeans!

For the rodeo cowgirl, there is this shirt, shades of pink, orange, yellow & red are sure to please. These shirts have been extremely popular at Ropes & Rhinestones; Alicia is great at picking out unique items to carry. Ropes & Rhinestones also sells an amazing selection of jewelry & other accessories guaranteed to keep you looking trendy. I love this cowboy outline here.

Turquoise never looked so good with these crossed guns. It’s fun & girly. Plus if you visit R & R online & check out the rest of Alicia’s items you will find a variety of gun necklaces & jewelry to compliment this shirt. Shirts like these are conversation starters & statement pieces, great for standing out in a crowd. Plus did I mention that they are just under $30.00? Yes, I think that is a sweet deal.

Last but definitely not least or forgotten is this cowgirl start t-shirt. I love the action-embellished cowgirl leaping through the star. Roses in the background soften the look. These t-shirts are perfect for going out, horse shows & getting noticed. Ropes & Rhinestones can be found online at:

Cowboy Boots Of the Month

I love cowboy boots; they are an obsession of mine. I wish I could own a pair in every color, every design & every style. I have an extensive collection of boots but I am a notorious window shopper & admirer of boots. Every Monday on Horses & Heels I feature a pair of boots that I am currently lusting over. I am going to show you my favorite pair for the month here.

I love cowboy boots!

I adore this pair of Shannon Old Gringo boots from PFI Western Store. Flowers are everywhere & it makes these boots so appropriate for this time of year. Pointed toes please, the details of the pink, orange & blue stitched flowers are amazing. The leather is red & antiqued & gives these boots a very nice vintage look. You could sport these with jeans or you could soften up your look with a nice sundress or a western inspired skirt. White perhaps? These boots look good from all angles. The heels & soles were given a worn finish that compliments the rest of the boots vibe. Yes this is definitely a lust-worthy pair of boots.

Stepping Stones to Success The Story of Amy Laymon’s Legacy

~ Dream Big ~ Know your Desire ~ ~Make a Decision ~ Discipline Yourself ~ ~Stay Dedicated ~ Be Diligent ~ ~Devote your Life to Serving ~

“Anyone can work hard and get to the top one step at a time.” - Amy Laymon Growing up Amy’s family did not own horses nor did they have extra money lying around to buy Amy’s first horse as a child. So, how did Amy become the amazing horse woman she is today, running a successful training facility in Kansas? She had a big dream, focused on her desire to work with horses, decided to put God first in her business and life, stayed disciplined and went to work every day, was dedicated to her horses and her friends, worked diligently, and she devoted her life to serving others. Now, Amy has trained several top-notch, first division horses that have won in barrels even at the futurity level.

~Dream Big~

As a little girl, Amy dreamed of owning her own horse. At the age of five, she remembers giggling at pictures of horses in books and begging her dad for a horse. He told her that he would buy her a horse when she turned ten. On her tenth birthday, Amy promptly asked her father, “When do I get my horse?” True to his word, Amy’s father sold his boat and camper, so he could purchase Amy’s first horse Red Bee Buddy.

~Know Your Desire~

Not long after purchasing her first horse, Red Bee Buddy

was diagnosed with navicular, which rendered him useless in those days. Therefore, he had to be sold. That’s when her father bought Amy a barely started two-year old that she trained on her own. Just when he was going good, he died from colic. Which is when Amy had to start a three-year old off the track, who went on to win a room full of trophies. As Amy says, she was destined to train from the start and quickly learned to never give up! Amy always had a desire to do better. “I could never get enough and it is pretty much the same to this day.” She learned an important lesson at a very young age. If she was going to own a better horse, she would have to be willing to sell the one she was currently riding. Amy has always known that she would have to part with something to get something better. She worked hard training and making money, so she would be able to purchase tack and show on the weekends. She sold her winning Open Show horse to purchase Tiger Jim, a horse that led her to many championships including Horsemanship, Reining, Barrel Racing and much more. This was all while she was still a youth rider. She didn’t forget this lesson though as she got older. Amy credits the sale of her champion stallion, Mr. Impressit to allowing her the opportunity to purchase the land in Wichita, KS where her first training facility was located. Now, Amy resides in Andover, KS where her business continues to grow. She has several repeat customers and plans to compete on 5 futurity horses next year.

WWW.tumbleweedranch.BIZ Page 38

~Make a Decision~

Making the decision to put God first in her life is a big deal to Amy. She shares her testimony prominently on her ranch’s webpage and also has also chosen “A Heart for God and a Love for horses” as her business’s slogan. Amy has chosen to make God her business partner. She trusts that if she does the work; He will do the rest. Amy believes that God loves horses. She pictures Jesus returning on a white horse as Revelation says he will do. “I strive to be a witness to what God can do in a life by helping others, staying humble, and always remembering that He put these fine animals in my care to take care of and in doing so glorify Him.” One of the hardest things for Amy to hear is when people lose a loved one and they don’t know if their loved one was a believer or not. Amy says, “I want my family and friends to celebrate my life when I depart from this world knowing for sure my soul belonged to God.”

~Discipline Yourself~

“Many (trainers) are not self-disciplined enough and it shows if the work hasn’t been done. Not to mention word gets around quickly.” Horses learn by repetition. Amy has a consistent work routine and believes that when a horse understands what you are asking it to do then that horse will try their heart out for you. Amy went to work every day, even when she faced challenges and obstacles. Amy shared with us her most challenging experience. “It was in December of 2009. I had a barn full of sick horses before the futurity in OKC and one with an abcess. I didn’t even think I was going to get to go. I had one entered in the Juvenile and 100k slot race, one in the futurity and the fortune’s round, and another customer’s horse in the futurity that had been

trained all year for this race. I had many prayer warriors helping me not to give up hope. All of the horses were well the day we left for the competition. I was relieved just to be going no matter what the outcome. Since none of the horses had been hauled for about a month, I didn’t have any expectations. However, I ended up having a great race and won the biggest amount of my career totaling over $13,000. This whole experience taught me you can prepare all you want but some things are just out of your control. This was a defining moment in my career. I learned to relax and know that I just need to do my job and understand there will be bumps in the road.”

~Stay Dedicated~

Keeping a positive attitude, Amy views life’s obstacles as learning opportunities. Times may put her to the test, but she is confident that she grows during these moments and walks away from the experience a better, stronger individual. Amy’s most rewarding experience actually occurred from a disgruntled customer that returned their recent purchase back to Amy. “In 2007, I went to the BBR Finals on a horse named A Lotta Rocket. He had been sold the week before to someone. They had a bad run in the same building at the IFR finals and were convinced that he was not what I had promised them he was. They received their money back on the horse. Since I felt this was the best horse I had ever ridden and I knew he had to redeem himself, there was a lot of pressure on me to do well. He left the BBR with around $3,500 to his credit and won fourth in the short go behind some of the best horses in the business. I credit that horse to this day for giving me the confidence I have for performing under pressure. It was a very emotional race for me and what started out as bad turned into something great. It reminds me of the scripture, ‘All things work together for good for those that love the Lord.’”

show horses come out of an old farm barn… we built stalls in and had no arenas or round pens to work in… no money to hire a trainer to haul me, which was a must to win but I defeated those odds. I had to work hard to get where I am without a lot of conveniences. In running futurity horses, I pick a prospect and stick with it! I don’t throw horses away and have many to choose from. I train one horse to completion. I want people to be inspired that anybody that works hard can make it one step at a time. Never give up on your dreams and goals. God is big. Through hard work and dedication, you can achieve those higher goals.”

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28

~Be Diligent~

Tumbleweed Ranch is a flourishing business that just keeps growing all because of Amy’s hard work. She has high expectations for herself, her horses, and her business standards. She works hard. She currently is the only trainer at her ranch. She averages between 8 and 10 horses at a time most of which she is training and has just a couple of her own at any given time. Her focus is to train and sell top quality barrel horses for every level of rider. She has designed a great feed and fitness program that allows her to compete at a top level and do it drug free.

~Devote Your Life to Serving~

Amy is very passionate about living by the Golden Rule. She feels blessed when her customers turn into lifelong friends. Even though horses are her business, she feels that it has done much, much more for her than filling her pocketbook. She hopes that she will be remembered as a kind, giving, and a good hearted woman. She believes that her relationships are truly what inspires her and keeps her going. She says, “The one who dies with the most friends wins!” Speaking of serving others, Tana Poppino has been a blessing to Amy’s life. She is an amazing rider, but always gives God the glory. Amy has appreciated Tana’s recent sermons. Plus, Amy strives to be a shining example to others just as Tana has been to her.

~Amy Wants you to Know~

“You don’t have to have the fancy trailers and barns. I started out showing and had several national and world champion Page 39

My life is not defined by barrel racing or training horses. I know everything I do and the people I meet are gifts from God and there is a purpose behind it all.

Cowboy Mounted Shooting

Photo provided by Mr Quigley Photography WWW.MR QUIGLEY PHOTOGRAPHY. com;

Raw Horsepower - Hard Ridin’ - Straight Shootin’ 1st Ohio Cowboy Mounted Shooters 1st Ohio Shooters its time to start heading for the Great Outdoors! I don’t know about you, but this cowgirl is looking forward to Sunshine and Blue Sky! Time to give your horse trailer a once over to make sure everything is in tip top shape before hauling down the road. Even if you have been hauling this winter, better check tires to be sure they have good tread , no dry rotting, and proper air before heading down the road. An unnecessary delay because of a flat tire might cause you to miss the shoot! LQ trailer checks include the propane tanks and battery, you may need lights inside and juice to run the water pump. Make sure that your water tank is clean and the hot water heater works, might need a shower after a big day of shooting! Don’t forget to check for TP and ‘Commode Perfume’, don’t want to get caught smelling up the neighborhood! Time to check everything out on the truck too! Tires, brakes, change oil, after all with the high fuel costs you want to make sure you travel most efficiently and safely. Now that you have all that accomplished, time to check your saddle rigging, don’t need cowboys or cowgirls bitin’ the dust because of dry rotting leather or old nylon billets. It doesn’t take long to clean and condition the leather on your saddle. Check that old string girth too, make sure no strings are broken or if you have a nylon girth, make sure the material where the rings attach is clean and pliable. Same for bridles, check headstalls, reins and bits for good condition, don’t need to be running full out and the bridle falls off, the bit or reins break when your trying to turn or even worse “stop”! Besides, any of the above might cause you to miss a balloon and that would add a 5 second penalty to your time! Horse check is next, how about your pony tires? His hooves are just as important as the tires on the truck and trailer, shoes or trimmed bare feet keep the pony and rider much safer. This is a good time to check with your vet to make sure your pony is vaccinated for any virus that could be lurking around, if he gets sick you both miss the shoot! Ok, your just about ready to go! Better get your gun leather out and make sue it still fits, it was a long cold winter and those warm apple pies sure tasted good! Finally, dust off your hat and grab your chinks, its SHOOTIN’ TIME! The next check is the 1st Ohio schedule if your interested in trying Cowboy Mounted Shooting. “I really want to try it” Cowboys & Cowgirls are always Welcome! Spectators always free! Cowboy Mounted Shooting is a family affair, come on and bring the family...dad, mom, auntie, uncle, son, daughter, cousins and don’t forget the neighbor. Let me know if you need directions!

Indiana Rough Riders MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Howdy all!!! The CMSA has many rules and regulations to keep us all in line during a competition. This month our member spot light is on the cowboy that helps many of us keep our hearts and souls going in the right direction, Doug Sheldon. Doug is gracious enough to volunteer his time to lead our Cowboy Church services on Sunday mornings at many of our shoots and we’re thankful for his and his family’s time and energy doing so. We asked Doug to tell how he got involved in CMSA and Cowboy Mounted Church and here it is: It is an amazing story how the Sheldon’s became involved in the CMSA family. Hannah, alias “Sunshine Kid” was riding Western Pleasure in her early teen years. At this time her uncle had a shooting range at his home and the “Kid” loved to shoot and became very efficient at

CMSA News

his pistol range. Her uncle suggested she bring together her love of shooting and riding in a sport called Cowboy Mounted Shooting of which we never had heard of. Her uncle acquired a CMSA magazine and there was an ad for the I.R.R. We called the number and it was the cell phone of Russell Case. You could hear the gunfire in the arena as they were having a Friday evening shoot. We drove to Rushville to see what CMSA was all about and have been hooked ever since. During this time I had a strong interest in being a part of Cowboy Church and through conversations with the shooting clubs in Ohio and Indiana I let them know that I was ordained and very involved in teaching and facilitating retreats and workshops and days of reflection. I started to receive invitations to preach/facilitate Cowboy Church where ever the “Kid” was riding and shooting. It was a perfect fit and I love doing it. I have taught, preached, facilitated retreats or acted (I write and perform plays) in over 30 denominations in the last 28 years and I love being a part of Cowboy Church. I have preached at Cowboy Churches in Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana. I try to use a barrel for a pulpit where ever I go. I also try to bring folks with me to minister in music and if that does not work out, we use recorded music. Last year I ministered with singer and fellow shooter Randy Coning all season. I was not raised in a church atmosphere but was raised close to the earth and have enjoyed my native roots and traditions and it has been a part of some of the Cowboy Churches. Some ask how I became a follower of Jesus and I tell them it was through a Civil War book. I had a strong interest many years ago in the Civil War and was drawn to General Stonewall Jackson. I could not get enough books about him. Diane, my awesome bride, and I were on a Civil War vacation before we had children and we were camping about half a mile away from where General Jackson died. That evening I was reading a book entitled “Jackson and the Preachers” by Coleman Lantern. I asked the Creator to help me have what Mr. Jackson had, this special intimate relationship with Him. As soon as I said that it was like chains exploded off of me and I have been filled with contentment, love and joy ever since. Growing up I loved to watch the westerns on TV and loved Dale and

Page 43

Roy. CMSA has been a major blessing to “Sunshine Kid”, Diane and to me. The friendships, fellowship and food are awesome. They are all just part of being in the family of CMSA. We have announced when needed and have blown up and set many balloons and help out wherever there is a need. To all that have touched the Sheldon family in CSMA we say a big thanks!!! P.S. I have to say because of CSMA, ”Sunshine Kid” was recruited to attend an Equine High School in Monroe, Ohio where she was the Valedictorian. She is now a senior at Miami University. Also because of CMSA she met her husband who came to deliver hay to our barn. Thanks CMSA!!! Thanks again to Doug and his family for their gift of ministry. May God bless them. Once Again that’s it until next month. God Bless and keep those cylinders spinning! Bryan McDonald IRR President Mac6gun@gmail.com (765) 561-3148

to help others. It means a lot to me when I can ask someone for help and they are kind enough to help. Tell me about your horses? how many? names? ages? color? breeding? bad habits? funny things? or whatever? nicknames? I have 6 horses... -My main horse is Blue Golds Shadow (Blue) 11 y.o black gelding, hes always into

TEEN CORRAL w/Clint Van -Butchs Peppy Otoe (Butch) 5 y.o sorrel gelding, my project! -Last but not least Shorty my 3 y.o, hes a sorrel gelding by Dr. Red Rock that is anything but short, hes into everything, loves to lick like a dog and bite occasionally, likes to climb and untie things, and apparently while we were gone this weekend he got a sliding door off the tracks to escape from his stall...still trying to figure out what to do with him, lol. Do you train your own horses? I’ve trained all of them in barrels and poles except for Gator and Ima Do you run poles and barrels? Yes Your family recently purchased a indoor arena and you have shows and board horses? Do you help with all this? What kind of shows do you have? How often? Name of stable or ranch? Yes, we moved up here last May and we renamed it the Black Diamond Arena. Right now all we put on is barrel and pole shows during the winter and we’ll have a few fall shows. I am definitely expected to help since the reason we got into horses is because of me. What are your accomplishments in barrel racing? I have won multiple district awards such as NBHA IN 05 Youth 1D champion for the past 3 years as well as other youth and open

My mom wakes me up around 8 and I do school work until 12 or a little later. Then I head out to the barn to ride and take care of the horses. I usually eat dinner around 8 and

Qualified for the short go and placed at the Indiana NBHA State Show. Won the Youth 2D and 3D saddles at the NBHA Great Lake nationals in 2009. Won the Indiana 4H State Fair in barrel racing 2 different years. What do you want to accomplishment or win? I would like to win a go round or final at a big barrel race such as the IN NBHA State show What and where is your favorite barrel race? My favorite barrel race is the NBHA Youth World Championship at Jackson, MS. I see your a helmet head to (love it) is this a must from the parents? I think if I absolutely did not want to wear it they wouldn’t make me but they prefer it. Wearing one doesn’t bother me because I’ve always wore one when I used to jump and do 4H. What are your hobbies beside horses and barrel racing?

spend time with my parents. I try to go to bed before 11 but that doesn’t always work out. Will the price of fuel effect your traveling this year to shows? It hasn’t yet but if it gets any higher it might. We’re still planning on going to the few big shows we always go to plus a couple new ones. I hope they get the gas prices figured out though... Whats the plan after high school? I don’t know yet, I need suggestions! Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Still living where I am now and riding horses. Hopefully I’ll have a career involving horses. Any advice to fellow barrel racers? Ask as many questions as you can, soak up any advice you can from people, and always try your best. Just have fun, that’s what it’s all about. Until next month, be safe and ride hard.

Clint is a 17 year old junior he is enrolled in Abeka Academy homeschool. His parents are Terrie VanVolkenburgh and respectively Joe Trentman. He has grown up in the horse world, both parents have rode almost all their life...Clint's grandfather as some of you may remember was the late Terry VanVolkenburgh, who would run up and down the fences when his daughters would run barrels. Clint began barrel racing at the age of 4 with a pony, then went on to particpate in Jr. Rodeo and his favorite event was the sheep riding, had to believe he is now a barrel racer. He has won the Ohio Youth NBHA and Indiana Youth and Open NBHA , he has also won the congress youth barrel four times, and was runner up in the Congress Sweepstakes, placed at Josey Jr. world numerous times, and won the NBHA Youth World 1d in 2006. He loves to barrel race and is now trying his hand at the futurities. In Clint's spare time he mows grass for a part time job and is also very active in his church where he and his cousins are bible school helpers. Clint also volunteers one day a week at a school in Cincinatti where he spends time tutoring other kids in reading.

IJRA IJRA News

Story provided by: Rachel Thomas Pictures provided by: IJRA & as noted

It’s Rodeo Time!!! IJRA welcomed back the rodeo season on April 16th and 17th in Edinburgh, IN. While Saturday made us wonder if we shouldn’t still be on winter break, Sunday welcomed our return with warmer weather. Edinburgh was our first IJRA rodeo back and was also a Cinch Division rodeo. Our Indiana Cinch Division Team contestants had a great weekend and gave it their all to make sure their performance in each event added points to their year-end total. With the Indiana Cinch Division Finals being held at the April 31st-May1st New Caste, IN rodeo, everyone had their hats pulled down tight and a look of determination as they hit the gate. The Indiana High School Rodeo Association also held their rodeo at Edinburgh with the IJRA. Not only are the IJRA kids able to watch the older kids in action, they are also able to interact with a great group of role models and mentors. Since many of the IHSRA contestants were once IJRA contestants, there is plenty of encouragement and positive interaction between all of the cowboys and cowgirls. Many of our IJRA contestants had a great rodeo weekend. On Saturday, Kolton Hartle won the K-1-2 Chute Dogging with a 5.75. Hunter Verhey put together a 73 point K-1-2 Mutton Busting ride and Brandon Manuel was right behind him with a 63. Way to Cowboy Up!

IJRA Cowboy Hunter Verhey

The K-1-2 Girls had the crowd wowed. New IJRA member, Georgia Brumley showed that this wasn’t her first rodeo as she took home 2nd in the Goat Tying, Barrel Racing and the Pole Bending. Greeley Eastep had a personal best time of 14.107 in the Goat Tying and then later came back to win the Barrel Racing. Emma Morris and Weapon won the Pole Bending. First year members, Astella Fisher (1st Mutton Busting) and Josie Hoagland (3rd in Goat Tying), let the other girls know to keep their eyes out for the K’s in the K-1-2!

3-4-5 Boys’ Dalton Hartle made a 9.449 second run in the Step Down Calf Roping to win first. Frankfort, IN cowboy, Kolt Keller, won the Chute Dogging with a 2.083. Good thing his mama didn’t blink or she would have missed it! One great moment in the Boys 3-4-5 action was when Cooper Morris backed into the roping box and came out swinging to catch his first Breakaway calf in a 4.184. Way to go Cooper! 3-4-5 Girls had smoking runs as Lexy Petro daubed her steer in a 1.911. Grace Hassler not only won the Goat Tying with a 19.689 but also won Barrels and the Poles (22.528). Madelynn Farris did a great job in the Goat Tying with a 3rd place finish at her first IJRA rodeo.

6-7-8 Boys Michael Shreeve and Jordan Banta won the Team Roping on Saturday. Lane McPheeters (4.145) and Strand Barricklow (4.645) kept the Chute Dogging interesting with their tight times. 6-7-8 Girls worked hard to get their IJRA points as well as the important Cinch Division points in their events. Jessie Hoagland had a 12.246 in the Goat Tying which was the fastest time of the day. Lois Thomas and her great looking horse ran a 16.718 to take home the points in the Barrel Racing. IJRA Princess and her consistent and great horse Scout placed first in Poles. Sunday had the 6-7-8 Cinch contestants putting together great runs in their events as the cowboys and cowgirls competed for more points hoping to make the trip to the Cinch National Finals in Gallup, NM. Briana Belden made a great 23.578 second pole run and Jessie Hoagland ran a 16.086 to win the Barrel Racing on Sunday. Michael Shreeve won the Bull Riding with a 76 point ride. Trevor Colby and his 2.227 second time in the Chute Dogging held for first. Gary Hook placed third in the Chute Dogging with a 3.05. The cowboys and cowgirls in the 3-4-5 age division showed great form in their events and it showed in their times. Maci Zimmerman won the Goat Tying wih a 17.476. Barrel Racer, Alyssa Griffiths, had a smooth run to win first with a 16.728. Kolt Keller came back on Sunday in the Chute Dogging with a 1.968 to make his Saturday run look slow. Kolt then moved on to the Step Down Roping where he stopped the clock at a 7.275 and once again the mom’s of the IJRA rodeo family went wild! Avery Whitten won the Steer Daubing with a 5.781. Webster Thomas placed 2nd in the Chute Dogging with an impressive time of 3.299. Blake Andis, in his rookie season, did an outstanding job at the Edinburgh rodeo, placing 3rd in the Goat Tying both days. Welcome Blake and keep up the hard work! The K-1-2 age division is giving all of the other age divisions a run for their money. Congratulations to Astella Fisher who rode her wild woolie for an 81 point ride in the Mutton Busting. Emma Morris, who is new to working the Chute Dogging event this season, placed first on Sunday with a 7.301. Greeley Eastep won the Pole Bending and also the Barrel

Racing on Sunday. Her time of 16.974 was one of only 16 second run in the K-1-2 and one of only four runs to be sixteen seconds this weekend. One of the other runs was in 3-4-5 and the last two in the 6-7-8 age division. Greeley will also remember the Edinburgh, IN rodeo for her runs in the Goat Tying. Saturday, Greeley had her personal best run (14.107), only to come back on Sunday to put together a smoking run for a new personal best of 13.325. Bryce Tieman had a quick throw in the Chute Dogging to win first with a 3.974 with Ty Rollins coming in with a close second. Congratulations to all of the IJRA contestants at Edinburgh. Everyone looked great coming back from winter break. Our summer rodeos are sure to be filled with fun, laughter and lots of personal bests and memorable moments! IJRA Raffle tickets are still on sale. Win a 40’ Powder Creek Round Pen or $500. Tickets are $5 each or 5 for $20. Winner will be drawn at the IJRA State Finals. On the Trail

By Brother Brad Curtis of Mountain Top Cowboy Church

WELCOME HOME COWBOY He rode in the main gate Green grass was knee high Swaying in the breeze Under a clear blue sky

We’ll ride up to the main house It’s just over that furthest hill We have eternity to ride So there’s time to kill

When they topped the hill Pete said welcome home This here is your mansion And your fields to roam

Ridin` a fresh mount White as a new snow This spread was bigger Than anything down below

As they crossed a creek Water cool and clear In the distance They could here people cheer

They rode down to the ranch Pete raised his hand Said everyone this is Randy He’s ridin` for the brand

He met up with a top hand His name was Sailor Pete Said welcome to Heaven cowboy Hope you’re ready to eat

Pete said we have another Who has joined the spread We all shout for joy When one leaves ol` Devil Red

Then the Lord came out Said cowboy well done You’re welcome in Heaven’s Ranch Because you believed in my Son

There’s a feast a` waitin` And it’s there every day I’ll show you around cowboy Since it’s your first day

Then Pete pulled up on his pony Said a’int this a place You’re goin`a love it here I can tell by the smile on your face

Be Still.... Oh, I know you see where this is going! How many of you can’t be still? How many of you have plastic bags, chickens and dogs flying at you from all directions and you are a constant ball of nervous anxious energy 24/7? Continually fretting about this situation and that situation until you exhaust yourself? I know if I were a horse, I would be one of those nervous horses. How about you? Are you worried about your job, worried about your love-life? Worried about your kids or your family? It’s easy to get so wrapped up in the worry that we forget that there is someone else in control. We have a sovereign God who is holding onto the reins if we will just stop and “Be Still!” If you don’t let things get to you, then you’ve realized - consciously or not - that God has it under control.....that he will not introduce us to any more than we can handle. If we can just “Be Still” and take it all in, instead of reacting and freaking out about things out of our control - then we will be a much stronger person, a much more dependable person and be much, much more in tune with what our father is trying to tell us or show us.

H

ave you ever been riding a horse and they are just “full of it” or “on the muscle” all the time? You just want to tell them to “chill out and relax!” They are antsy and just can’t stand and be still and if they could only understand what you were trying to tell them, they would realize that there is nothing to worry about....you (the rider) have everything under control. They can be a young horse being introduced to lots of new things that they have never seen before....or an older horse who gets way too anxious during his workouts at home. No matter how you look at it, they are kind of like us in that sense.....some of them - just like some of us - just can’t “Be Still.” If you’re like me, I get aggravated at those nervous horses and want so bad for them to calm down and relax. I spend time petting, brushing and quiet riding and trying to build their confidence and it seems like we make progress and then -BAM!!!! - something happens that rocks their world and we are back at square one again. A plastic bag may blow across the arena, a chicken may jump up and flap it’s wings at the fence or a dog may run up behind them and their nerves are frazzled for the day. Anxiety is what they feel, frustration is what I feel. How do I convince this anxious horse that everything is going to be OK? That the plastic bag will not eat them, the chicken will not attack them and the dog is harmless? Well, if you know horses, you know that like people, the same thing may not work for all of them, but it usually involves repetition and reward. Repeating a scenario and rewarding them when they react with the desired response. Of course, we can’t bombard them with plastic bags and chickens until they aren’t afraid....it takes time and patience on our part....a little at a time or we’d drive them over the edge of no return. Patience and finesse from us as their keeper and they eventually realize that they can trust us and be still under what would have previously been “life threatening” circumstances.

Page 52

Matthew 6: 25-34 25 Therefore I say unto you, be not anxious for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than the food, and the body than the raiment? 26 Behold the birds of the heaven, that they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; and your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are not ye of much more value then they? 27 And which of you by being anxious can add one cubit unto the measure of his life? 28 And why are ye anxious concerning raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: 29 yet I say unto you, that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 But if God doth so clothe the grass of the field, which to-day is, and to-morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? 31 Be not therefore anxious, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? 32 For after all these things do the Gentiles seek; for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. 33 But seek ye first his kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. 34 Be not therefore anxious for the morrow: for the morrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

Psalm 46:10 Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.

Until next month.... Be Still!!! Happy Trails & God Bless! Christa

Last & most important thought… Salvation is a gift and a choice...... Jesus died on the cross as the final sacrifice. When He was resurrected on the 3rd day, he defeated Satan for us. All we have to do is believe that He beat death and acknowledge it with our words. If we believe that and accept Him as our personal savior…we are promised eternal life with Him in Heaven. You can’t earn your way into Heaven; you have to believe your way there. So many people think they “aren’t good enough” to get to Heaven… But… Salvation is a GIFT from God and you don’t earn a gift. Gifts are something someone gives to you and for the gift to be yours, you have to accept it. All we have to do is accept that wonderful gift. I know I have…won’t you?

Page 53

Greener Pastures

Know someone who’s moved on to greener pastures? fencetalk@ msn.com

But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. Romans 5:15 For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Romans 10: 9-10

Mystery of the Month.... This month’s Mystery Cowboy is shown in the first picture turning a barrel at a show somewhere in Ohio. We are not sure of the location, maybe you can help us with that portion of our mystery. The inset shows him picking up a second place ribbon at the same show. The year was approximately 1966. This cowboy and his wife met showing the horses and continued to show horses at contesting events and rodeos and had a son who followed in their footsteps. Recently they are enjoying their grandchildren and you may run into them at a barrel race together. Correctly identify our mystery cowboy with as much information as possible (name, horse’s name, location) to win your choice of a one year subscription to The Horse Resource, a “Horsey Hat” or a “Horsey-T.” Please send us your photos from the past....we’d like to use them in our Mystery of the Month. Horses, people, events, etc... Send via email to: thehorseresource@msn.com or mail to The Horse Resource 12601 S CR 200 W Muncie, IN 47302 We will return your original photos to you.

We Have A Winner.... May’s Mystery cowboy of the month was Bruce Murphy of Murphy Trailer Sales in Crwfordsville, Indiana. Bruce was shown riding Reynolds Dunrite, a stallion by Reynolds Rap. The picture was taken in the early 80’s at the Michigan Quarter Horse Breeder’s Futurity. This month’s winner is Tammy Lickliter, Tammy chose a hat for her prize. Bruce was recognized by many....also guessing correctly were: Missy Bourdon, Beth & Marty Moon, Kelsie Lancaster and Rhonda Helming. Congratulations to Tammy.

March’s Mystery a Tough One..... ......We Have A Winner! Mary Freels solved the March Mystery that had so many stumped! Mary chose to extend her subscription for a year! Congrats, Mary.... These pictures date back to the early 1960s and the young cowgirls are sisters. Donna Malan and Valerie (Malan) Daunhauer are their names. They are shown at ages 4 and 6. Their mother, Phyllis Malan, sent these pictures in of these two cuties and their trick ponies. The sisters were always performing tricks on their ponies. They also showed them in pony pleasure and the gaming classes. The competed in 4H and did very well. Each of the sisters went on to become barrel racers and eventually joined the NBHA which brought some winnings and championships along the way. Donna has since given up the barrel racing scene and drives a semi for a living. Valerie claimed the NBHA Senior 1D State title in 2010 in her home state of Indiana at the Indiana NBHA State Show.

Keep sending us those photos!! Send via email to thehorseresource@msn.com or mail to 12601 S CR 200 W Muncie, IN 47302 Page 63
