LETTER FROM THE EDITOR A Letter from the Editor

T

his has been one tough month for me. I am not usually one to share my hardships, but I thought this month I would let you in on just a couple of them. First of all, my computer crashed. Yep, the one that I use to put all of these pages together...the one that has all of the programs and files needed to get anything done, that one. One day this past month it decided that it did not want to turn on. Panic from me? Just a little. I took the computer to the computer fixing guy (is that the technical term?) and prayed that it could be salvaged. Of course, I made sure my files were backed up in case I had to start with a new system. Thank God it was fixable! It set me back several days and I learned that when things are out of your control a nice ride will put things in perspective.

The day after I picked up my computer and was planning to spend every waking minute in the office to get caught up - I got sick. Nothing serious, thankfully, but still a bug tough enough to put me on the couch for two days straight. Again, panic from me? Just a little - in between the coughing and cold chills. I took my medicine and focused on getting well - no riding to put things in perspective, but I prayed that I would be able to get back to work quickly. Thank God after two days I was back in the office banging away at the keys to the keyboard of my fully functional PC. I still have a few sniffles, but my world didn’t end. However, this month’s issue may be a little late getting to you. For that I am truly sorry, but sometimes you just have to take one day at a time and do what you can with what you have.

Alley Issues: Rearing Cashrebel14 Posted 2015-05-25 8:09 PM I have an 11 year old quarter horse gelding that has been having a lot of problems in the alley. He has been checked out by a vet and chiropractor and given a clean bill of health. The problems started about a year ago and have increasingly gotten worse. He has been off since January in hopes of a break helping. This past Saturday I took him to a local feed show and the problem began where we left off. He will not go near the alley way. He begins to rear and just will not go. If you get after him it just makes it worse. He begins rearing and by that time I usually get off and lead him to the corner of the arena and mount up. Then I just go because if you stall even for a second he will begin acting up again. Although once you get him going he runs a flawless run. Please no rude comments and ALL info/help will be appreciated! taburunthemgood how are his feet he maybe sore there.

I might also consider getting a second opinion from another vet also when was the last time he got his teeth done? does he take awhile to cool down or cough after his run. he might also just have some anxiety you could possibly try oxygen’s jaibreak or pozzi relax. Not trying to seem like i attacked you or threw to much a you at once but those are all the possible options that i can think of.

OhMax Did you just have him looked over for lameness or also checked for ulcers and bleeding?

Cashrebel14 Yes, he has been looked at by two vets, local and a well known. He had a lameness exam done and everything was fine.

He got his teeth floated at the time also.

His feet were also checked. We had every physical aspect checked out lol:)

CJE You might try some B1 calming supplements.....I’ve had some good results with them.

Also maybe ace, chlorpromazine you can use day of show.....and some prefer resprine or fluphenazine. I had a gelding that pretty much refused to enter the alley on show day you could go ride him any day of the week at the arena. Think the noise excitement etc just caused him to much anxiety which lead to his refusal.... had him vetted no issues.....

Ace worked.....when nothing else did.

This is always my last resort.

Ps never had any success with any of paste products giving day of show.

achildres I just have about fixed my mare from this problem... Sad news is, I gave her 3 years off (1st year was just a break, 2nd she was pregnant, the last year she was with the foal). Give him time to just be a horse for a while (he probably wont need 3 years, but a good amount of time is probably necessary). Haul him places that aren’t arenas (trails, etc) and let him get his mind off of things. If he has ANY bad habits at home, work them out completely before you go back to trying to run again. I finally got on my mare last November, worked on just basic skills and getting her riding in a snaffle with a soft, responsive mouth (she was not like this before). I then started hauling to open arenas, and letting her be in the arena without doing any sort of pattern work. I would walk in and out until she would do it with her head low and she was calm. Basically I won’t get off of her until she does anything I ask, calmly.

After she got comfortable at an open pen,

I started hauling to events, but just letting her be in the warm up area/near the alley way. The first time she did this she was super nervous and thought she was going to run - reared a couple times, but i was able to manage it. Finally, yesterday, I hauled her and we were able to walk in and out of the alley and stand in the holding pen like a complete angel. Once shes back in perfect shape Ill most likely enter her in some exhibitions and after that get her running.

Good luck and if you need any more advice you can PM me! My biggest advice though - please don’t get rough with him and try and force him in. It makes me cringe when I see this happening at barrel races. When they start rearing and getting stupid on you, theyre just using the reactive side of their brain, and yanking on them and spurring them just eggs on the reaction. You have to get the regular side of their brain working again for them to understand that the arena isn’t going to eat them.

JLBerry It has to be pain somewhere. Horses don’t refuse the alley for no reason. Not trying to be rude...just saying. I would treat for ulcers and then maybe x-ray her back for kissing spine. That doesn’t always show up on a lameness exam (it didn’t for my horse) but it will show up on x-ray.

cowgirl_3207 How are YOUR nerves? Put your self in check, trying chewing gum and thinking and everything but what you are about to do. KEEP HIS FEET MOVING!!!! IMO this is the biggest thing for a “sour” horse.

I have taken on lots of problem children, many of them are gate sour. After lots of trips to the vet and chiro, tons of ulcer meds ect I have learned tons of tricks. I personally dont like dealing with rearers, I have seen too many flip over and hurt the rider. With that being said, I do take them on but I it is rare that they will actually rear

at my house. I do not push them to that point. I keep their feet moving and their mind off of what is going on. If you let a horse sit there outside the ally while all the other riders are running chances are you are going to be getting him and your self all jacked up with nerves. I work circles at a walk, move body parts, back, roll back anything and everything to keep those feet moving. I also start a routine as to when I am going to ask for them to enter and run. One mare I ran, I would kiss twice and bump my legs twice and she knew it was time to move on and through. I also spend a lot of time at BIG practices with my problem children, not running them, but walking them up to the gate and back to the holding pen, up through the gate and to the first barrel and back to the holding pen and I do it all speeds. Also while waiting my turn at small jackpots I will walk up to the gate hesitate and walk off.

LMS Seriously review your attitude and personality in the alley. Watched over 200 runs this weekend and I would say that 90% of problem horses are from their riders. (provided there is no physical issue) however, the rider has to be open minded enough to continue looking even though there is not a complete diagnosis. Watch the calm/mellow-no nonsense attitude horses enter the alley sometime, pay attention to those riders and how they do things. Learn things, having a jacked up wreck generally speaking starts in the riders hands. Sometimes the truth hurts, please be very careful, but be open minded to what you’re doing. Good luck.

In the world of horses, whether if one is involved in the pleasure, reining or barrel racing world, one has heard of Martha Josey. She is labeled as one of the most influential people in the horse world by not only being a World Champion in the Woman’s Pro Rodeo, an Olympic World Medalist and was inducted in the Rodeo Hall of Fame in 2011. She has impacted the horse world with her positivity, training and mental attitude training. Finally, the world gets an inside view of her training with her new book, Run to Win with Me in Barrel Racing, written by Martha her self.

Her book starts off focusing on the rider by stating “get mentally tough” she goes on to tell about how she handled the pressure at shows and if one is determined to reach a goal, then it is going to take work to get there.

The book is laid out for an easy read and contains some wonderful photography of Martha and her horses over the years of her running in the NFR to her working horses at her ranch in Texas Martha hits every aspect of barrel racing from looking for a good horse to keeping one sound and conditioned in a step by step guide.

She includes diagrams of conformationally correct and balanced horses and shares that all of her horses have had great balance. The book is lined with quotes from Martha. She includes hints and tips in each chapter, whether it is about training horses or exercises for yourself.

Whats very different about this book is that it covers so much and it leaves you with all of your questions answered. Martha backs up her advice with the success she has had with her own horses and she also gives a helpful diagrams of how each horse ran to and around the barrels and had their own “style.”

This book is not only good for beginning barrel racers but it also packed full of information that even the most experienced barrel racer can find helpful tips and learn something new. Every day in the horse world we tend to learn something new and Martha is aware of her knowledge and the future holds so much more.

WH Design by Dash reels in Quarter Horse upset at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino SHELBYVILLE, Ind. – May 23, 2015 – In a night that saw many longshots hit the board, WH Design By Dash added one more double digit payoff for his backers. The four-year-old son of Brimmstone rallied home first against a field that included seven stakes winners in Quarter Horse allowance action Saturday, May 23 at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino.

With regular rider Victor Olivo aboard, WH Design by Dash broke alertly and without any issues, getting good early positioning. Halfway through the race, it looked as if Air Born Leader and Harold Collins would take the top spot, but WH Design by Dash found an extra gear and got by the field for the win by one-half length. Air Born Leader finished second over Chilled Six Pack and Shanley Jackson, who finished a head back in third place.

WH Design by Dash, overlooked by the betting public, paid $63.40, $36.20 and $14.80 across the board. The time for the 400 yard dash was :20.036 seconds.

“He (WH Design by Dash) is more mature now,” said Olivo, who has ridden the horse in all but one of his 18 career starts. “He is better standing in the gate now. Last year, he used to move around some. The inside post didn’t hurt him at all, and he raced really well tonight.”

WH Design by Dash is owned by Julia Martin and trained by her husband, Paul. The Indiana-bred now has six career wins and earnings in excess of $118,000.

“He is such a nice horse to be around,” said Paul. “We had some concerns about the one hole but he raced well out of there tonight. We did some swimming therapy with him since his last start and then long jogged him. He broke well and never looked back. He stands flat footed in the gate now, which was great.”

The Martins, who reside in Yorktown, Ind., will continue to prepare WH Design by Dash for the upcoming stakes season at Indiana Grand, which gets underway June 13 with the first of six all-Quarter Horse racing days. The sorrel gelding was the Quarter Horse Racing Association of Indiana’s High Point Awards winner last season, winning four of seven starts.

All Quarter Horse racing days for 2015 include June 13, July 4, Aug. 1, Aug. 29, Oct. 10 and Oct. 24. A total of 20 stakes will be held at Indiana Grand in 2015 with purses for all stakes and trials topping $1.6 million.

News “It remains to be seen if he runs well on the turf,” said Mogge. “But if he comes out of the race well tonight, we plan to wheel him back on the turf in the next round of the Don K.” Candy Waltz now has 10 wins in 22 career starts and is four for six in 2015. His latest win pushes his career earnings to more than $172,000.

SHELBYVILLE, Ind. – May 23, 2015 – Candy Waltz and jockey Israel Ocampo dominated in the first round of the $30,000 Don K. Memorial Starter Series at Indiana Grand Saturday, May 23. The duo cruised to victory by six and one-half lengths to kick off the series that extends through 10 rounds into October.

Candy Waltz was making his first start in the Midwest, most recently competing in Arizona at Sunland Park. The six-year-old gelding was claimed two starts back by Trainer Greg Green and Owner William Brauns, who decided to send the horse to Trainer Wayne Mogge to run in the Midwest.

“I have known the owner for a long time and he’s a friend of mine,” said Mogge. “I trained for him in the past. They specifically sent him to Indiana for the Don K. series and that runs almost the entire meet.”

Mogge has been impressed with the horse from day one, and Candy Waltz did not disappoint. Starting from post four in the seven-horse lineup, Ocampo moved the horse out from the gate briskly, but found a lot of competition for the top spot early on with several contenders using early speed in the one mile and 70 yard event. Heading down the backside, Candy Waltz was four-wide but was under a good hold from Ocampo, who began to ask the horse to advance heading into the final turn.

At the top of the stretch, the race belonged to Candy Waltz. The son of Candy Ride accelerated into a quicker gear, opening up on the field and cruising home to victory. Ballyjamesduff and Alex Contreras finished second followed by Copse and Fernando De La Cruz for third.

“I just wanted to keep him (Candy Waltz) out of trouble, because I thought I was sitting on the best horse,” said Ocampo. “After he got to the front, it was easy work. Wayne (Mogge) told me he was ready but he was really sharp. I’d like to see him in some stakes because I think he is good enough.”

The second round of the Don K. Memorial Starter Series, named after former Indiana HBPA Executive Director Don Kubovchik, returns Wednesday, June 10 for a one mile turf event. Candy Waltz has only had one previous start over the turf at Hollywood Park in 2012.

Easy Date Stakes This Candys Awesome added the $70,000 Easy Date Stakes to her win earlier this season in the Decketta Stakes. Owned by the Estate of Carl C. Pevehouse of Ratliff City, Okla. and trained by Clint Crawford, Ivan Carnero handled This Candys Awesome to a one-length win, covering 350 yards in :17.361 seconds over a sloppy track. Painted Laico Bird was second while Nanny McFeebe was two lengths behind the winner in third.

The 1-2 wagering favorite, This Candys Awesome paid $3 to win, $2.60 to place and $2.20 to show. Painted Laico Bird returned $5 to place and $4.60 to show. Nanny McFeebe paid $6.20 to show.

The Easy Date win is the eighth from 14 career starts for This Candys Awesome. A 4-year-old mare by PYC Paint Your Wagon from the Mr Jess Perry broodmare Jess Send Candy, This Candys Awesome was bred in Oklahoma by the late Carl Pevehouse. She earned $41,982 for the win, pushing her lifetime total to $306,623.

The Easy Date is named after the 1974 All American Futurity winner and 1975 American Quarter Horse Association World Champion who was campaigned by the late Walter Merrick of Sayre, Okla.

Cashshae is by Spit Curl Jess from the Cash Treat mare Your Cash Treat. She earned $41,730 to boost her total earnings to $94,224.

Boyd Morris Memorial Stakes Rocketair used a wide run to get up to win by a neck in the $70,000 Boyd Morris Memorial Stakes at 400 yards.

FL Lady Bug was a foundation broodmare for the racing operation of Marvin and Lela Barnes of Ada, Oklahoma. She was inducted into the AQHA Hall of Fame in 1999.

Owned by Karen and Preston Cloud of Sallisaw, Okla. and trained by Clint Crawford, Rocketair was ridden by Ivan Carnero. After breaking out slightly from his outside post position in the field of six, Rocketair straightened away and powered home to win in :19.839 seconds over the sloppy track. Load Your Guns led at the start but could not hold off the winner, settling for second. Novas Gold was third, three-quarters of a length behind the Rocketair.

Away at 7-2 odds in the wagering, Rocketair paid $9.80 to win, $4 to place and $3 to show. Load Your Guns, was the betting favorite at 7-5, paying $3 to place and $2.40 to show. Novas Gold paid $2.40 to show.

Bred in Oklahoma by Bob Moore Farms, Rocketair is by Jumpn from the First Down Dash mare Rivanne. The Boyd Morris Memorial is his sixth career win from 19 starts. Rocketair picked up $41,946 to move his lifetime earnings to $335,095.

The Boyd Morris Memorial is named in honor of the late Blanchard, Okla. horseman who was an extremely successful jockey in Quarter Horse racing, winning the 1964 All American Futurity aboard Decketta, among other famous races. After his career in the saddle, Morris trained for many years and was a fixture from the outset at Remington Park.

Jack Brooks Stakes Boozin And Cruzin scored her second career win in the $50,000 Jack Brooks Stakes, winning the 350-yard event by a head in :17.571 seconds over a sloppy track.

Owned by J and B Rental, Inc. of Grand Prairie, Texas and trained by Kevin Willis, Boozin And Cruzin was ridden by David Pinon. Specials Jamie was second while Smart Money First was a neck behind the victor in third.

Part of a same-owner entry with Paint Me Perry, going off at 1-2 odds with favored status, Boozin And Cruzin paid $3 to win, $2.20 to place and $2.10 to show. Specials Jamie returned $6 to place and $3 to show.

Smart Money First paid $2.40 to show.

Winning the race for Oklahoma-bred 3-year-olds, Boozin And Cruzin is a filly by Tempting Dash from the Okey Dokey Dale mare Penelope Cruzin. She earned $29,892 to increase her career earnings to $55,605.

The race is named in honor of Jack Brooks, the longtime Blanchard, Okla. trainer who won eight All American Futurities and was a mainstay at Remington Park until his retirement in 2007.

American Horse Council’s 2015 National Issues Forum Forum to Feature “Protecting and Promoting the Horse” (Washington, DC)- The American Horse Council has announced that its theme for this year’s National Issues Forum, sponsored by Luitpold Animal Health, is “Protecting and Promoting the Horse.” The issues that the horse industry has faced over the last decade have changed, but there are several consistent challenges. These include federal regulatory challenges, attracting newcomers to horses and equine activities, maintaining equine activities that we enjoy, and welfare initiatives to protect our horses. But as with any challenges, they also create opportunities. The Forum will focus on how the industry is dealing with them.

Of great importance to the horse industry is its relationship to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. “Most horse owners don’t understand how

The AHC’s Congressional Reception will be Tuesday night, June 17, on Capitol Hill. This is an opportunity for the horse community to visit informally with Members of Congress to renew old friendships, make new ones, and discuss industry concerns.

The annual Congressional Ride-In will take place all day Wednesday, June 19. The Ride-In allows members of the horse community to meet with their elected representatives and federal officials to discuss important issues affecting them. All members of the horse community are encouraged to participate, even if they don’t attend the AHC convention.

The Ride-In puts a face on the $102 billion horse industry and the millions of Americans who are part of it. Congress deals with various issues that impact the horse industry, including taxes, gaming, immigration, welfare issues, access to trails and public lands, diseases, and interstate and international movement of horses. This is an opportunity for the horse community to come to Washington in force and meet with their Senators, Representatives, and staffs. The Ride-In literally illustrates the goal of the AHC to “Put More Horsepower in Congress.”

News AQHA Removes Rule SHW 910.12 Retired AQHA judges have the opportunity to return to the list of AQHA-approved judges.

The American Quarter Horse Association - May 29, 2015 Retired judges have the opportunity to return to the list of AQHA-approved judges if they pass the appropriate judge recertification exam.

The American Quarter Horse Association Judges and Executive committees recently voted to remove Rule SHW 910.12, “A judge shall accept mandatory retirement at age 75.”

Retired judges have the opportunity to return to the list of AQHA-approved judges if they pass the appropriate judge recertification exam.

The Judges Committee stipulated that all returning judges, from allaround to specialized judges, will be required to take and pass the rulebook and video tests.

All-around judges will take a 50-question test on the AQHA rulebook, with allowance to use an open rulebook the last 10 minutes of the exam.

There are four video tests: reining, trail, western riding and horsemanship.

Judges will be required to make a minimum 80 percent on the rulebook test and 75 percent on the video test to pass. Practice rulebook and video tests will be sent to each applicant.

Specialized judges will take a 25-question test on the discipline they are testing for as well as a video test. Roping applicants will take a video test on tie-down, heading and heeling. Again, a passing grade will be 80 percent on the rules and 75 percent on the video test.

Applicants may not apply for specialized cards in halter, cutting, reining, team penning/sorting or working cow horse unless they are already approved by the corresponding alliance association – World Conformation Horse Association, National Cutting Horse Association, National Reining Horse Association, United States Team Penning Association/ Ranch Sorting National Championships or National Reined Cow Horse Association. However, regardless if an applicant is approved by the alliance association, the applicant must pass the AQHA recertification exams.

Testing has been tentatively set for July 22 at the Sheraton DFW in Irving, Texas. If you are interested in going through the process to obtain your AQHA judging credentials, you must fill out the form and submit it to AQHA, along with your $100 seminar fee, by June 26.

Group supports U.S. Representative Paul Tonko’s announcement today that he intends to introduce legislation giving independent oversight of drug testing and enforcement to an entity created by the U.S. AntiDoping Agency, a non‑profit, non-governmental organization WASHINGTON, May 29, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- A diverse group of horse racing and animal welfare organizations today announced the launch of a coalition to support uniform medication standards for Thoroughbred racing and the formal introduction of proposed bipartisan legislation that would grant independent authority over rule‑making, testing and enforcement oversight to an entity created by the U.S. Anti‑Doping Agency (USADA).

The groups will work with Congressman Paul Tonko (D-NY) and other lawmakers to file common-sense legislation to bring long-needed reforms to horse racing.

The Coalition for Horse Racing Integrity (www.horseracingintegrity. com) is comprised of two major Thoroughbred racing organizations (Breeders’ Cup Ltd. and The Jockey Club), an animal welfare group (The Humane Society of the United States), with grassroots support from the more than 1,000 members of the Water Hay Oats Alliance.

The House bill will be known as the Thoroughbred Horse Racing AntiDoping Act of 2015.

The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency administers the anti-doping programs – including education, sample collection, results management and drug reference resources – for athletes in U.S. Olympic, Paralympic, Pan American and Parapan American Sport, including all Olympic sport national governing bodies, their athletes and events throughout the year.

“It is USADA’s hope that the model of independence and national harmonization envisioned through this legislation can be realized for the long term good of this sport,” said USADA CEO Travis T. Tygart. “As we have done with other sports, USADA would be focused on creating a robust program that can protect the rights of competitors and the integrity of competition.”

“In a sport built on the integrity of competition, nothing is more important than a level playing field for the horses, jockeys, trainers, owners that compete and for the fans who wager on our sport,” said Arthur Hancock III, co-founder of the grassroots organization WHOA. “The creation of this coalition now provides all interested parties with a unique opportunity to support a single, national approach to medication, drug testing and penalties with strong, independent oversight and enforcement.”

“It is time for key stakeholders to come together and find solutions to protect equine athletes on the track and to turn around the problem of widespread doping of horses to enhance performance and to get injured horses into the starting gate,” said Wayne Pacelle, president and chief executive officer of The Humane Society of the United States. “The number of breakdowns in American racing should be unacceptable to any person concerned about the welfare of horses.”

Among the provisions in the proposed legislation by U.S. Representative Paul Tonko (D-NY), USADA would create the Thoroughbred Horseracing Anti-Doping Organization (THADO), an independent, non‑governmental non-profit governed by a board comprised of six USADA board members and five independent individuals from the Thoroughbred racing industry. This organization would work collaboratively with state racing commissions and their respective staff members throughout the country.

THADO would develop and administer a nationwide anti-doping program that would go into effect beginning January 1, 2017, following input from the Thoroughbred industry and the public.

The horse racing industry has been working to advance better rules pertaining to drugs, drug testing and penalties through the National Uniform Medication Program (NUMP) on a state-by-state basis.

“The racing industry has taken thoughtful and significant steps toward medication reform in recent years and we believe that the creation of this coalition demonstrates widespread support for further changes, changes that can be made in a more timely fashion,” said James L. Gagliano, president and chief operating officer of The Jockey Club. “We deeply appreciate Congressmen Tonko’s willingness to help us bring about reform.”

The Coalition also credited the efforts of Congressmen Ed Whitfield (R-KY) and Joe Pitts (R-PA) and Senator Tom Udall (D-NM), who have been on the forefront of efforts to reform the current medication system.

“Without the leadership of Congressman Whitfield, Congressman Pitts and Senator Udall, the industry may not have taken this problem head on,” said Gagliano. “This new coalition wants to bring all lawmakers interested in racing reform together and find a common solution that will further ensure the safety of our athletes and the integrity of our sport for our participants and our fans.”

“The current system of state-by-state regulation of medication across 38 states has inherent inefficiencies and a newer, modern and efficient approach is vital to the growth of our sport,” said Craig Fravel, president and chief executive officer of Breeders’ Cup Ltd. “We are pleased to partner in support of this legislation and we look forward to adding more coalition members in the weeks and months to come.”

Millions of people participate annually in American Thoroughbred racing as owners, trainers, veterinarians and industry support professionals, and as fans and bettors. The industry contributes $25 billion to the U.S. economy annually and generates 380,000 domestic jobs, with 38 states participating in pari-mutuel racing and American Thoroughbreds traveling and racing overseas in Europe and on growing racing circuits in Asia and the Middle East.

June is here and what a month we have lined out! We have double point/ state fundraiser shows in Indiana, Kentucky and Michigan. Please check the approval pages for each state to find additional information and show fliers. We also have our first ever Pennsylvania Preferred Show at the end of the month. The show flier for the Pennsylvania Show is included in this issue. Remember that the early entry deadline is June 15th. There are no late fees but it will be cash only the day of show. Stalls and hookups are limited so please make your reservations as early as possible. We have plenty of money, awards and wildcards to make it worth the trip so we hope to see you there!

YOUTH NATIONAL CHAMPIONS

This month we are very happy to recognize our Youth National Champions. Lane Hornberger (1D), Ashley Harlan (2D), Austin Crawford (3D) and Cameron Kennedy (4D).

1st Division Champion

Lane Hornberger and Smooth Talkin Play (Mercy) are no strangers to the pay window at IBRA shows. They have won and placed at many barrel all over Indiana. In 2013 he was the Indiana Open 1D Reserve Champ and many of their points were earned at the super shows at C Bar C. You could say that Lane is carrying on the torch that his father lit last year. Darrin, Lanes father, was the 2013 Masters 1D Champion. When asked who influenced his barrel racing style the main answer Lane gave was “My Dad”.

He trained Mercy and I learned everything I know from him.” Lane went undisputed at Nationals this year winning both go rounds of the youth collecting $1,250. He plans to go to more shows and save his winnings. In closing remarks Lane wishes everyone good luck in 2015 and for many years to come.

has loved working with horses since. Ashley says her champion horse McB Sunkinda Pistol is really her moms horse but she is fortunate enough to ride him from time to time.

“He has an amazing turning style and really likes to run hard when entering the arena. Pistol is one of the funnest horses in our barn to run.”

Ashley is working hard to become a professional barrel racer and atributes much of her ability to her parents who taught her patience and guidance and Bob Jaqua who is teaching her a lot as an upcoming trainer and rider. When asked what was memorable about this event she said,“I got to ride a lot of really nice horses and all my family were there to watch me make my final runs and get my saddle since it was my last year to run in the youth class.”

In true champion form Ashley gave much of her success to the people around her. “I would like to thank my parents for believing in my training abilities and always making sure I can go down the road. It is through their continuous support that I get to live and make my dreams come true.”

Our next champion made his big splash at Nationals after having only ridden barrels for four years. IL Member Austin Crawford and Sir Bucks Baby (Shine) paired up about a year before Nationals. Shine had been previously ridden by Yvette Sandy but had been on pasture for over two years.

TN Member Cameron Kennedy was only 12 years old this past October when she won her first National Title. Cameron and TailWinds Tommy have been partnered up for three years now.

Austin says, “I started riding him daily and working hard to get him into shape and ready for the barrel racing season. We immediately bonded and our riding fell together.” This was Austin’s third year at Nationals and he is now a National Champion.

When asked what makes him special Cameron said, “He gives me his all and he’s an older horse. She rides in her Champion Saddle, outfits her horse in the tack from the TN State Show and she wears her Nationals Jacket proudly. Cameron says her Dad is her favorite barrel racer and he has “influenced me the most because he rides too and wants me to try my best at all I do.” ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ What an amazing group of outstandingly humble kids. All four champions attribute their success to hard work and the people and horses around them. These are qualities in children that are quickly becoming scarce so congratulations to these fine young men and women. #catselfies & “Sully” I’ll admit, things were a little somber around here last month after losing Chuck. We’re all missing him for our own personal reasons. I suppose, for me, Chuck was a lot of fun to hang out with - he also left some big footprints to fill as far as entertainment and subject matter for this monthly thing I do...

I spent a lot of last month observing the other critters around the farm. I think I have stumbled upon another entertaining critter in the form of Sully the cat.

Sully is named after one of the characters from Monsters, Inc, the movie. Appropriately named, I might ad. We do have a girl kitty named Mike (again - Monsters, Inc.) and a

boy kitty named Lisa.

Apparently kitties are hard for the people to name appropriately when they are young. Or at least around here that seems to be a pattern.

Back to Sully. He is one of those kitties that likes to hang out with everybody. He wants to be where the action is happening. He is an attention hog.

The other day he was with Freckles (all the kitties love Freckles) nosing around the pastures while the lady distributed hay to the horses. I snapped a few pictures of him to share with you. He must have liked the idea of having his picture taken, because he snuck in a few

cat selfies later on when I wasn’t looking. Of course, I shared one of those with you too.

I think Sully might be trying to make a name for himself - I seen the hashtag #catselfie popping up with his picture on some social media. I think he may be trying to cramp my style... Cats are that way.

The Horse Show From H#$*! Part 2

terror. Now they had me tied so close that she was tangled up in my leash within two minutes. We had a new foal in April. She is real sweet and extremely friendly. Her her barn name is “Lauren.” She is named after Lauren Hill who recently passed away from my hometown with “Terminal Pediatric Brain Tumor.” She was 19 years old. She raised over one million dollars to fund this disease before she passed. What an amazing young lady!!! She raised these funds to create awareness of this disease to help others in the future.

Age: 13 Parents: Mike & Terri School: Highland Middle School Do parents ride? Yes Siblings: Austin (older brother) Who taught you to ride? My mom and dad. But my first pony Star probably taught me the most. We called her Super Star. I started riding Star before I could even walk. I would ride bare back because she was the best baby sitter.

Horses: Red is 25 years old. He’s a sorrel Quarter horse out of a Shawnee Bug mare and Bold Episode. He gave me confidence and also made me trust ‘The Ride’. He gets prancy in the alley but then I just turn him loose and have fun in the pattern. He’s not a trail horse, I’ve learned that from experience. He just likes to long trot around the field and go barrel racing.

Billy is 15 years old. He’s a bay Quarter horse out of a Flaming Jet stud. What makes him special is we have the same birthday! He’s very different from Red. He does not like to long trot and loves the trails. He’s very smooth and I love to ride him around the house. I was running him when I was 8 years old but took a break. He was a little bit too strong for me back then but last season I got back on him and we got along great!

w/Clint Van Favorite Show? My favorite show is the State Show. Because I don’t have to go too far from home and I get to run up against my “horse show family”.

We have alot of fun camping out and cheering for each other.

Accomplishments? My first year on Red (2012) I ran him at the NBHA State Show and got my first award. A saddle for winning the 2nd Division. Red and I went to the Youth World Championships in Georgia (2013) but had some bad luck. In that experience I leanred valuable lessons from running against some amazing youth riders! On Billy, I ran at Quarter Horse Congress (2014) and placed 11th in the Youth 13 and under. Again, I learned alot from family, friends and competitiors. Running at the big shows, really makes me want to do better. On Annie, our 2nd show out this year we placed 3rd in the 2nd division at Cray Woman Ranch. I’m really excited for this year!

Mentor? My biggest mentor is my Dad. He gives me advice after every run. Sometimes I listen and sometimes I don’t. I usually regret it when I don’t. The other people who have made a difference is Laura Lambert and Jessie Meeks . They talked me into running Red when I thought I was too small. And my Mom who gave Red to me. She gave me so much advice while running him and taught me how to take care of him. To all these people I give a big “Thanks!” I don’t know where I would be without them.

YOUTH

Annie is 11 years old.

She’s a grey Quarter horse out of Cash Not Credit.

This is my first season on her.

She had a baby last Memorial Day. I started running her this year because we’re taking a break on breeding and Mom wanted to see what we could do together.

She’s really smooth going into the first barrel and when she turns she feels like she’s on the race track. She’s really quick footed and snaps around the barrels. She’s totally different from the Boys.

What are some other hobbies? When it’s not show season and the snow is here, I go snowboarding with my big brother Austin. He was a snow board instructor this year. So I got better because he taught me so much more. We go snowboarding about 3 to 4 times a week. I am also running cross country this year. I like cross country running because I can feel the dirt under my feet . . . just like the way I was raised.

Future goals? My goals are to get in the top ten at Quarter Horse Congress and to get a scholarship to Oklahoma University. I would like to get into Oklahoma because they have a rodeo team and you can stall your horses for free. I want to go to school to be a fifth grade math teacher. I would also love to go to the NBHA Youth World and Open World Championships and place.

Advice to other barrel racers: My advice to other barrel racers.

When someone gives you advice don’t always shut the idea out of your mind. Excerise your horse as much as you can to keep them in shape so they don’t get hurt. Also, get a special bond with your horse so you two connect when your in the arena. Mom says “Take care of them and they will take care of you”. Don’t let the bad runs bring you down because there’s always next weekend to improve. And ALWAYS have fun! That’s why we do what we do.

Favorites

My favorite color is teal. My favorite truck and trailer is any truck and trailer that gets me and my horses to the horse show. My favorite bit is the Lynn McKenzie. That’s the bit that helped me run Red. . . my first big, fast horse. My favorite music is pop. It gets my amped up to run.

Bling or no bling . . . .bling me!!

Clint is a graduate of East Central High School. His parents are Terrie VanVolkenburgh and respectively Joe Trentman. He has grown up in the horse world, both parents have rode almost all their life...Clint's grandfather as some of you may remember was the late Terry VanVolkenburgh, who would run up and down the fences when his daughters would run barrels. Clint began barrel racing at the age of 4 with a pony, then went on to particpate in Jr. Rodeo and his favorite event was the sheep riding, hard to believe he is now a barrel racer.

He has won the Ohio Youth NBHA and Indiana Youth and Open NBHA , he has also won the Congress youth barrel four times, and was runner up in the Congress Sweepstakes. He placed at Josey Jr. world numerous times, and won the NBHA Youth World 1D in 2006. He loves to barrel race and is now trying his hand at the futurities. In Clint's spare time he mows grass for a part time job and is also very active in his church where he and his cousins are bible school helpers. Clint also volunteers one day a week at a school in Cincinatti where he spends time tutoring other kids in reading.

It’s Rodeo Time!

S

o many things happening in June! IJRA rodeo is in full swing. The horses are slick, the kids are tan, and the practice pens are buzzing later and later as the longer days of summer keep us in the barn until after the sun goes down.

Our IJRA members will compete on the weekend of June 6-7th in Greenfield, Indiana. Friday night, June 5th, there is an IJRA Fundraiser called Friday Night & Fast Horses at the Hancock County Fairgrounds.

Show starts at 7:00 pm and includes Exhibitions, Open 3D poles, a Dog Race, 3D Youth Barrels and an Open 4D Barrel Race with $1000 added.

We hope all of the local Pole Benders and Barrel Racers will come out and support the IJRA. If you aren’t a barrel racer or pole bender but have a fast pooch to put in the Dog Race or would just love to come and watch, we’d love to see you Friday evening. Show flyer is on the IJRA Facebook page as well as the 2High Dollar Ranch Facebook page.

Also in June Team Indiana will head out for Des Moines, Iowa for the Cinch Junior High Division National Finals which begin on June 21st and runs through Saturday the 27th. The Top 4 in each event have qualified to make the trip and compete against contestants from all over the country as well as Australia and Canada. It is a week of competition, fun, and meeting other kids who also love to compete in the sport of rodeo.

Best Foot Forward Recipients

Congratulations Hanna Pickering and Josh Rorig for receiving the 2015 Ariat “Put Your Best Foot Forward” Award. This award is given a male and female Junior High Division member from each state who has been recognized as the most improved and also for having good character. Hanna and Josh will both receive a new pair of Ariat boots of their choice. Way to go Hanna and Josh!

IJRA News Cinch Junior High Division Spotlight

YOUTH

Nick Walter is in the Spotlight this month. Nick is a 7th grader who is competing as part of Team Indiana in the Cinch Junior High Division. This is his first year in the Junior High Division and he competes in the Calf Roping, Breakaway Roping, Team Roping with partner Josh Rorig, and the Ribbon Roping with partner Karissa Byers. Nick and his horse Candy will make the trip to Des Moines, Iowa at the end of June to represent Indiana, and compete in the Team Roping and the Calf Roping at the Junior High National Finals.

When Nick tied his calf for his first qualified time in Cinch, he was very excited when I went up to congratulate him.

What Nick wanted to tell me all about his horse,Candy, and all of the work he had done with her to get to this point. I asked him to tell me more and this is what he had to say: I started rodeoing when I was five. My favorite events were the roping events – especially the calf events. This was my first year in the Cinch Division, I am competing as a 7th grader. My horse’s name is Candy.

Candy used to be Abi Beerwart’s barrel horse. A year and a half ago, we started calf roping. It was new to both of us. Tucker O’Neil (who was 14 years old at the time) and I started working with Candy. We worked on the basics of calf roping.

and the timer expired. I was so close! However, Sunday was a different story. I caught the calf and the timer didn’t run out! I was so excited!

Candy was very happy too. She turns around and touches my leg as if saying “How did I do, Nick?”

After talking to my friends, I am looking forward to Nationals. They say it is a total blast!

My goal this year was to qualify for Nationals in Iowa.

All those hours teaching Candy what to do, it was worth it! She is a wonderful horse, who is a great listener. She loves what she does, and I love that she does it.

Passion of Youth

In one small town, there’s a young man celebrating a 21st birthday. A rite of passage consumes him to engulf the evening, which consumes the night, and which beckons the morning. It’s a milestone passed while surrounded by friends. The hands of the old pat him on his back. They don’t push! They congratulate!

My life, like many of those belonging to the old, is a lesson in the “how not to” more than anything else. I have no advice. I have no directions or instructions for the young, except ...

Fifty miles away, there’s another young man, a week away from his 21st birthday. As he passionately pursues his passions, morning becomes day; day becomes evening; evening becomes night. The midnight oil burns for accomplishment, not out of obligation. No milestone is reached today.

No hands pat him on the back. Desire pushes him. He congratulates himself.

Do not accept limitations! Do not conform to expectations! Do not let disappointments of the old steel the unbridled anticipation of your youth!

Repel the infestation of cynicism suffered by the old. Never say, “I can’t”, until you cannot try any longer.

Passion pushes; pushes; pushes!

It’s the passion of youth. It pours from them. They don’t seek it. They don’t have to find it. They take it in with every breath. It is the oxygen filling a place uninhibited by restraint. Nothing is a limit.

A hundred miles away in another direction, youth suffers an unspeakable horror. A life is taken not only from those, who loved her, but from the world of possibility and potential. Unfortunately, her passion is snuffed out in evil intent of another.

I know this – Hold onto the passion!

Please forgive us! In our attempts at wisdom, we want to guide you. In our attempts at advice, we want to assist you. In our attempts at love, we want to protect you. In our living, we want to teach you. It is you, who must choose your paths, not we.

We have little to offer, but our failures, as examples. We know where we went wrong, so many times. We are embarrassed; ashamed; and don’t want you to go there. If we know anything, we know we would not know what we know without the detours.

Live your lives with passion, young ones. It is what separates you from us!

You Have Everything You Need You have everything you need to fulfill God’s divine purpose for your life.

I read this line in my devotions this morning and it really stood out to me.

I had never really thought that I could ever have everything that I need. Honestly, I am like most other people - always looking for something more...always reaching for the next goal or just wanting to improve on what I already have.

There is usually more to the reaching and wanting. It goes something like this: When I get _______, then I will _______.

When ________happens, then I will _____.

Are you the same way? Can you fill in the blanks ? I know over the years my husband has heard me use those phrases with too many different things filling the blank spaces to mention.

For some reason it never dawned on me that I could really have everything I need. Not in a material sense necessarily, but like the second part of that reads “to fulfill God’s divine purpose for your (my) life.”

What is God’s divine purpose for your life?

I have no idea. I don’t even know His divine purpose for my life! But it is nice to know that I have what I need to fulfill it.

I have realized that I have what I need in my hands at this moment to take the next step on my personal journey. I will have what I need tomorrow when tomorrow gets here.

INSPIRATION

If you read last month’s article about praying for God’s will in our lives, this follows right along with that thought. If you claim Jesus as your saviour and are striving and desiring to be in God’s will, then you have the most important step covered. God will provide guidance through the Holy Spirit if you are not sure where He wants you or what He want you doing.

Do you have a talent? Are you a prayer warrior?

Are you good with children? Are you setting a good example for your own children? Are you ministering to those who are shut in? Are you shining your light at the horse shows? Maybe offering to host a Sunday morning bible study or cowboy church at an event while you are away from your home church? I could go on and on and on.

There are so many ways to serve God - so many paths that are available - and none of us are walking on the exact same path. Hopefully we are trying to stay on the one where HE is our guide.

I don’t need the exact same things you need right now to fulfill God’s purpose for me today. I just need His guidance and to know that whatever “it” is I need at this moment, I already have “it.”

For some reason I find that supernaturally comforting. I hope you do too.

I went on a search for scriptures to elaborate on this thought. Here are just a few: 2 Peter 1:3 His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.

John 8:12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Psalm 23:1 A psalm of David. The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing.

Matthew 6:32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.

Romans 2:4 Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, forbearance and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance?

2 Corinthians 9:8 And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.

Philippians 4:7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Cara Marie dominates in $75,000 Indy Star Stakes at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino

SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – May 30, 2015 – Cara Marie was a dominant force in the first running of the $75,000-added Indy Star Stakes Saturday, May 30 at Indiana Grand. The race was one of two stakes on the turf to help complement “Jockeys & Jeans,” a fundraiser for the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund that netted well above $100,000 mark.

Antonio Gallardo was a late rider change aboard Cara Marie for trainer Kellyn Gorder. The three-year-old daughter of Unbridled’s Song was coming into Indiana off a fourth place finish against allowance company at Keeneland. Her start in the Indy Star Stakes was the first stakes start and she proved she can handle the jump up in class.

“Antonio (Gallardo) rode quite a bit for me down in Tampa this winter,” said Gorder. “We have a really good relationship and he’s really a good turf rider. When the turf is firm and hard like this, it’s an advantage. I thought she’d be out in front.”

THOROUGHBRED RACING

Starting from post one in the eight-horse lineup, Cara Marie did get the early jump on the field and secured the top spot to set the pace of the race. Mizz Money and Francisco Torres tracked the leaders every move during the seven and one-half furlong turf event, but as the field turned for home, they could not gain any ground on Cara Marie.

Cara Marie pulled off to a two and one-half length advantage at the finish line over Mizz Money. Mighty Souper and Israel Ocampo finished a solid third.

“She (Cara Marie) broke great and got in a great position,” said Gallardo.

A $460,000 yearling purchase at the Keeneland sales, Cara Marie is now

two for five lifetime. She more than tripled her career earnings with the victory for owners Three Chimneys Farm and Case Clay. Cara Marie was the third choice of the betting public, paying $8.80, $5.00 and $3.80.

“I entered her (Cara Marie) for a race at Churchill for Thursday because I thought this race came up tough and if it came off (the turf) we thought about having a backup plan,” said Gorder. “We’re looking at the Ta Wee next out. That’s something we’re eyeing. We’ll see how she comes out and talk with the owners.”

The $100,000 Ta Wee Stakes is part of the four-day Indiana Grand National Racing Festival leading up to the Grade II $500,000-added Indiana Derby set for Saturday, July 18. The Ta Wee, running one mile on the turf, is for three-year-old fillies and is slated for Friday, July 17.

The 13th season of live Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse continues through Saturday, Oct. 31, 2015. Racing is conducted Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 2:05 p.m. with first post for Saturdays set at 6:05 p.m. Thursday racing will be added Sept. 17, 2015 for the remainder of the 120-day race meet.

Despite the rain, no one could put a damper on the evening that was dedicated to the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund (PDJF). A packed house enjoyed mingling with some of racing’s royalty, with more than a dozen Hall of Fame jockeys in attendance, including Triple Crown winners Steve Cauthen and Jean Cruguet. Both a live and silent auction were featured with the Billy Lopa original painting of Cauthen, Laffit Pincay Jr. and Chris McCarron topping the sale at $31,000. In all, the live and silent auction brought in $87,250.

In addition to the auctions, Helping Hands for Freedom, which supports military families facing injury, loss and deployment, generously donated $10,000 to PDJF. Patrick Shannon, a Purple Heart and Bronze Star recipient, noted that they understand the affects of disabilities while on the job and the organization wanted to do something to support the cause.

Shannon was joined by other members of Helping Hands for Freedom, including David Roth and Harry Liggett for the check presentation to Nancy LaSala, executive director of the PDJF. Harty was not in attendance for the race, but he relayed strict instructions via the assistant to De La Cruz before the race, “Whatever you do, stay on that rail!” De La Cruz obliged Harty’s request and those instructions paid off.
