LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

M

arch looks to be a great month! After such a harsh winter for almost everyone in the country, an early Spring would be a nice surprise for those of us with horses out in the barn. A time for new beginnings, buds on the trees, sunshine staying around longer each day and babies in the barns and pastures! It’s time to send us pictures of those babies! Send us pictures of your 2011 foals along with Sire/Dam and Owner info and they may make the pages of a future issue. Email your pictures to thehorseresource@msn.com with BABIES in the subject line. April will bring about the Hoosier Horse Fair, as well as many other trade shows. Look for us at the QHRAI booth the first weekend of April in Indianapolis at the State Fairgrounds. We’ll be looking forward to visiting with our readers while we are there. On a personal note, I have actually got to start riding, finally! I hope to fit some barrel racing into my schedule this month. I am just not sure who needs the exercise more, me or my horses! I know we both need a good month before we go anywhere too far away from home for a competition. Back to “business.” We have some exciting things happening here at The Horse Resource, we think our readers will be excited to see some changes that will be taking place over the next few months.... so keep watching to see what we are up to! You may be surprised!

Until next month........it’s Spring!!! ...put some spring in your step on your way to the barn and then count your blessings on horseback! God Bless and Ride Safe, Christa Conway

Barrel Talk

Just a few “recipes” from the Home Remedy Thread found at www.barrelhorseworld.com on the Barrel Talk page.... (Please Remember these are Home Remedies and Recipes- These are not endorsed by The Horse Resource - be sure to use at your own risk)

ABCESSES

Posted by: Sidekicks Mom - 2009-04-16 1 cup Ice Tight (or some other packing mud). 1/3 cup Iccathamol 1 TBS Epsom Salts 1 tsp Alum (pickling spice) Mix in well ventilated area. Slap on bottem of foot. Put newborn baby diaper on and duct tape the crp out of it. Change every 24 hours. The longest I have seen it take to work is 48 hours.

DETANGLERS

Posted by: SKM - 2009-04-20 Detangler (close enough to the actual mix, lol): 1 pint Alcohol 3/4 cup baby oil 3 oz Alpha Keri (blue bath oil) Mix all igrediants in spray bottle. Shake as you use. Start at the bottem and work your way up. This takes out mats in the mane and tail better than any OTC product out there. After you use it, you can then wash and condition since it does have alcohol in it.

Posted by: ropin2turnin3 2011-02-1 ...this is the best detangler ever. 1 part mouth wash 1 part conditioner(any kind) 1 part baby oil This stuff is amazing. Been using it for years. Keeps the little white things out of main and tail in the summer. Helps to keep the tangles out. It gives a beautiful shine. And believe it or not my horses hair is healthier, thicker and longer since using it.

FLY SPRAY

Posted by: LIVE2RUN 2009-04-20 Arizona Recipe for fly spray: 2cups ACV 1cup water 1 cup Avon’s Skin So Soft bath oil 2tsp eucalyptus oil (or citronella oil)

Posted by: The BLUE chiken 2011-02-10 4 oz of skin so soft 4 oz of apple cider vinegar 4 oz of water 1 oz of Equine Science concentrated fly spray oils (cedarwood oil, citronella, eucalyptus, lemon grass, pennyroyal, peppermint and tea trea oil) I get this oil here brandenburgequinetherapy.com/herbs/2010/01/ fly-spray-concentrate this is my own mix. i spray my horses liberily and spray myself. i have also sprayed my dog. i think it works great and i dont have a reaction to it. ***To read more visit www.barrelhorseworld.com Watch for more Barrel Talk in our next issue!

www.Barrel Horse World.com Intro from the movie “Secretariat”.... Do you give the horse his strength or clothe his neck with a flowing mane? Do you make him leap like a locust, striking terror with his proud snorting? He paws fiercely, rejoicing in his strength, and charges into the fray. He laughs at fear, afraid of nothing; he does not shy away from the sword. The quiver rattles against his side, along with the the flashing spear and lance. In frenzied excitement he eats up the ground;he cannot stand still when the trumpet sounds.”

News “NIGHT SCHOOL” FAN EDUCATION FORUM FEATURED ON REMINGTONPARK.COM For Immediate Release, Wednesday, February 16, 2011 - “Night School,” the racing industry’s first national, interactive online fan education forum, will make its debut at RemingtonPark.com on Monday, February 21. Pioneered and developed by Horse Player NOW, Night School will be syndicated and implemented into racetrack and organization websites throughout the industry, providing a professional, consistent and unified outlet for fan education. Presenting title sponsors of the program are the National Thoroughbred Racing Association, the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) and Keeneland.

Co-hosted by Horseplayernow.com owners Jeremy Plonk and Joe Kristufek, the weekly Night School lessons are offered free to any racing fan who wants to learn more about the game and will include both novice and advance-level fan education. The 40-week season runs through December 19 with 90-minute sessions taking place from 7:30-9pm (central) each week. Other regular panelists will include Horse Player NOW’s Caton Bredar and Churchill Downs analyst Jill Byrne. Topical experts will be brought in weekly to share their expertise. Each class will include a 60-minute topical discussion, complete with an introduction video and downloadable lesson overview, and a 30-minute open forum where racing fans can ask the panel of experts anything about horse racing. Each of the lessons over the 40 weeks will be archived, creating an educational library via the popular Cover It Live live-blogging technology used by many of the world’s leading news agencies. Remington Park and other member websites affiliated with the title sponsors – the NTRA, AQHA and Keeneland – will be permitted to offer the Night School sessions on their sites at no charge. Other racing organizations already signed on to participate in the program include Churchill Downs, Arlington Park, Fair Grounds, Calder Race Course, Hawthorne Race Course, Oaklawn Park, Pimlico, Laurel and the University of Arizona Racetrack Industry Program. “This is an excellent initiative and resource for existing and prospective fans, and we hope all member organizations will join the NTRA in carrying Night School on their Web sites,” said Keith Chamblin, Senior Vice President of the NTRA. “Night School is a national approach to addressing fan education through the utilization of the Internet and social media tools that did not exist a few years ago.”

The NTRA is a broad-based coalition of horse racing interests consisting of leading Thoroughbred racetracks, owners, breeders, trainers, horseplayers and affiliated horse racing associations, charged with increasing the popularity of horse racing and improving economic conditions for industry participants. The NTRA has offices in Lexington, Ky., and Rye Brook, N.Y. NTRA press releases appear on the NTRA web site, NTRA.com. The 2011 Remington Park American Quarter Horse & Mixed-breed Season begins March 4 and continues thru Memorial Day, May 30. Remington Park will race on Friday, Saturday and Sunday for the first two weekends of the season; March 4-6 and March 11-13. Thursday racing will join the weekly schedule on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17. The first race will normally take place at 6pm with the exception of Sundays. A special 1:30pm first race is scheduled every Sunday as regular afternoon racing returns to the Quarter Horse season for the first time since 2004. Open daily at 10am for casino gaming and simulcast racing, Remington Park also features Henry Hudson’s on the first floor, which opens for lunch at 11am. Admission, general parking and valet parking are always free at Remington Park. Remington Park is Oklahoma City’s only Racetrack & Casino, located at the junction of Interstates 35 & 44, in the heart of the Oklahoma City Adventure District. For more information, reservations and group bookings please call 405-424-1000, 866-456-9880 or visit remingtonpark.com.

The Ohio Reined Cow Horse Association Announces 2011 Event Schedule New events include a judge’s seminar and Rod’s Extreme Cow Horse Saddle Series! Expanding on a successful 2010, the Ohio Reined Cow Horse Association not only offers an exciting 2011 show season, it also remains dedicated to being a place where everyone can experience the thrill of cow horse competition.

Topics for all 40 Night School sessions have been established and will be released as the season unfolds. The first five topics will be: 21st century handicapping; handicapping for class; pace handicapping; trip handicapping; and track bias. While many of the subjects are aimed directly at horseplayers, other scheduled topics will include ownership, racehorse retirement, behind-the-scenes looks at various racetrack jobs and more.

As in 2010, the home of the ORCHA shows in 2011 will be at Henderson Arena in Jackson, OH. Each weekend show offers NRCHA sanctioned classes with a variety of club classes for every experience level with $1,130 added each day. Shows begin Fridays at 4pm with ORCHA herd work classes and continue Saturdays and Sundays with NRCHA sanctioned and other cow horse classes. Special weekends include, the Jim Wells Memorial Bridle Spectacular, the Ultimate Cow Horse Championship, the ORCHA Summer Spectacular, and the Heartbreak Ridge Performance Horses Derby, which includes a snaffle bit futurity and Stallion Stakes. All weekends are APHA-PAC approved and select weekends may offer AQHA point classes.

“Jeremy and I are both extremely passionate about education, and we relish the opportunity to interact with, and teach, horse racing fans at all levels,” said Joe Kristufek, Night School host and co-owner of Horseplayernow.com. “With knowledge comes interest. Horse racing is a fascinating game, and the more you know about it from every angle, the more captivating it becomes. A successful future for horse racing is predicated upon growing the fan base, and that’s what Night School is all about.”

News Also new for 2011, is the ORCHA Extreme Cow Horse Saddle Series present by Rod’s Western Palace! The winner of this year-end high point award will receive of custom Bob’s Boyd Rice Cow Horse Saddle. As the ORCHA continues its growth, education of new members remains the top of the list. Kicking off the 2011 event season will be a Judges Seminar with the National Reined Cow Horse Association’s Director of Judges, Bill Enk, March 12-13 at the Ohio State University Horse Barns. In July, World Champion trainer, Sandy Collier, returns to Ohio for two cow horse clinics, the 25th and 26th. For more information on these events, as well as ORCHA go to www.ohiorcha.com. Without its generous sponsors, none of this would be possible. ORCHA would like to thank Roseberry Cattle Company, Rosell Trailer Sales, Heartbreak Ridge Performance Horses, McBride Cow Horses, Rods, Weaver Commercial Contractor, A1 Gate Company, NRCHA, Northrup Heritage Farms, and Honey Rock Ranch for their support. Founded in 2008, the Ohio Reined Cow Horse Association is a non-profit affiliate of the National Reined Cow Horse Association. HIALEAH PARK MEET ENDS WITH SHARP INCREASES IN HANDLE & ATTENDANCE

Comparing seasonal or aggregate figures is difficult, as this season the track raced 24 days as opposed to last season’s 40 days. However, Hialeah Park officials have it narrowed to a few reasons for the increases. First, field size was an astounding 9.32, up from 7.8 last season. This made for exciting, competitive and quality filled fields all season long.

Hialeah, FL, January 26-With the 24 day quarter horse season conclud-

ing this past Sunday, Hialeah Park management was excited to see numbers up across the board.

“These guys came down here with their mind on runnin’ horses. And with 24 days of racing, they raced all they could. It sure made my job a whole lot easier,” said racing secretary Sam Abbey said with a grin.

Average daily handle on-track jumped 15.3%, up from $39,942 to $46,034. Meanwhile, while most tracks struggle to improve attendance, Hialeah Park saw strong gains in that area as well. Average daily attendance was a strong 2,361 up 19.7% from last season’s mark of 1,973. Considering the saturated market that is South Florida, these figures are quite impressive.

In related fashion, the track’s decision to lower its takeout to an industry low 12% on all wagers helped handle both on and off track. In addition, the track’s marketing staff launched a variety of on-track promotions geared towards driving fans to the wagering windows and saw appropriate response in per capita wagering dollars.

Page 13

News “It’s certainly a step in the right direction. With the way the business has been industry wide lately, to show an across the board increase on any scale is really something to be proud of. The attendance this season was really amazing and we are proud of it,” said Vice President of Operations and General Manager Randy Soth.

The race for leading owner came down to the wire, with Flyboy Red’s win in Sunday’s 3rd race sealing the deal for the JK Running Horses. Under the care of veteran horsemen Kenny Laymon, horses under the JK Running Horse silks brought home 13 wins from just 38 starts, an astounding 34% clip.

On the racetrack, trainer Donnie Strickland notched his second training title in as many seasons at Hialeah Park, with 25 wins over the eight week meet.

“We weren’t afraid to put our horses where they could win. We had a good meet and the weather’s pretty good too,” said Laymon with a chuckle.

“It feels really good. We did it with a little bit different stock this year. I didn’t have as many stakes horses as I did last year. But, it doesn’t matter how you win em’. We got lucky,” said Strickland after his presentation in the winner’s circle.

Horse Of The Meet honors went to Matt Frazier trained Skyline Lover, who dazzled fans with displays of brilliance in 4 stakes races this season, including the 1000 yard Sailfish Stakes on Saturday. A rising superstar on the marathon scene, Skyline Lover is as good off the track as he is on the track.

Similarly, Strickland’s go to jockey, Oscar Delgado completed a huge season to run away with the jockey’s title. As it turned out, Delgado could have gone on vacation the last two weekends of the meet and still won the title, winning 40 races, 23 races more than Jesus Salazar, who finished second in the standings with 17 victories. “You know, a lot of horse racing is luck and being in the right place at the right time. I was fortunate enough that many of the owners and trainers trusted me with their horses. I want to thank Donnie and all the owners and trainers who’ve supported me this season. I’m very excited,” said an enthusiastic Delgado.

“He’s just a cool horse to be around. He marches to the beat of his own drum. I love having him in the barn,” said his trainer Matt Frazier. Last Sunday closed out the 2010-2011 racing season at Hialeah Park. Hialeah Park management would like to thank everyone, owners, trainers, jockeys and the fans, who made the meet a success. Plans call for the beginning of the track’s expansion and restoration project within the next few weeks, and a 30 day quarter horse meet to kick off in the fall of this year. The exact dates of the track’s third season will be finalized at the end of February. For further updates on the progress of Hialeah Park, please visit the track’s website at www.hialeahparkracing.com.

Indiana to Require Piroplasmosis Testing for Racehorses

Dickey Benton Kevin Cleary

Jon McGuire Jeff Hogan

A C-ELISA test must be performed for both Theileria equi and Babesia caballi strains of piroplasmosis and the sample must test negative for both strains by a laboratory certified and approved by the United States Department of Agriculture to conduct such testing.

From the State of Indiana, Indiana Horse Racing Commission Mitchell E. Daniels, Governor www.in.gov/hrc For Immediate Release - January 21, 2011 - The Indiana State Board of Animal Health (BOAH) voted at their January meeting to approve an emergency rule requiring all equines entering Indiana Downs and Hoosier Park during the Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse race meets to first test negative for equine piroplasmosis. The emergency rule is effective March 1, 2011.

“It is important for trainers and veterinarians to note that every equine entering association grounds during the Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse race meets will need to have a negative equine piroplasmosis test result dated within the last 12 months,” stated Dr. Angela Demaree, Equine Medical Director for the Indiana Horse Racing Commission. “A horse will be required to leave association grounds, and therefore be unable to race, if the negative test result expires before another negative test result is obtained.” The blood sample must be drawn by a licensed and federally accredited veterinarian.

Each equine entering association grounds during the Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse race meets must be accompanied by an official copy of the laboratory test result to include the animal’s identification (tattoo), the date the sample was drawn, and the test result. This is in addition to the current requirements of a negative Coggin’s test for equine infectious anemia within the last 12 months and proof of equine herpes virus vaccination within the last 6 months. The BOAH concurrently issued a veterinary advisory for veterinarians treating horses intending to be stabled on association grounds or race at the Indiana Downs Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse race meet opening on April 18, 2011. Rod’s Western Palace Presents The Extreme Cow Horse Saddle Series! One Rider. One Horse. One Great Saddle. A Bob’s Custom Boyd Rice Cow Horse Saddle, provided by Rod’s Western Palace, to the Ohio Reined Cow Horse Association’s yearend high point winner of The Extreme Cow Horse Saddle Series. Open to any ORCHA member, the year-end award will be based on points accrued by one horse/rider combination competing in Herd Work, Californio Ranch Riding and their respective NRCHA class. Points are based on the placing within each class. If there is a tie at year end, the total NRCHA class points will be the tie breaker. Points are tracked within a division and the horse/rider combination with the highest points wins the saddle, regardless of division. Riders must declare in advance the horse, the division and the NRCHA class they want points to count towards the high point saddle provided by Rod’s Western Palace. Extreme Cow Horse Saddle Series competitors must compete in at least four of the ORCHA 2011 scheduled weekend events. There will be a declaration form available at the March show. For more information on The Extreme Cow Horse Saddle Series presented by Rod’s Western Palace or ORCHA check out www.ohiorcha.com. Founded in 2008, the Ohio Reined Cow Horse Association is a nonprofit affiliate of the National Reined Cow Horse Association. Sharon was passionate about rodeo and barrel racing. She is a native of the New Orleans area and had been battling heart disease for some time. Co-producer of the LG Pro Classic Ryan Dohrn said today, “Sharon was always smiling. I can not remember a time when she was not laughing, despite the battles she was waging with her heath. She was a shining example of hope. “ All the staff and crew of the LG Pro Classic wish to express to Sharon’s husband Mike and the entire Roberts’s family our deepest condolences during this time of loss. A moment of silence for Sharon will be held tonight in her honor during the running of the first go of the $200,000 event.

More... Scoop YOU ARE INVITED TO MEET ONE OF TONY STEWART’S GIRLS Saribel Cruz, One of Tony Stewart’s girls makes her debut in her second career at the 2010 Hoosier Horse Fair & Expo Indiana Horse Council- INDIANAPOLIS, IN April 2010 - In conjunction

with Friends of Ferdinand Inc. and Tony Stewart Foundation, Tony Stewart initiated a program to save Indiana racehorses whose futures are uncertain because their racing careers have ended. Tony remarks that “these are animals that are all racehorses that have been retired versus being destroyed. Friends of Ferdinand is a great organization that will take these horses, rehabilitate them, fix their injuries and get them trained and adopt them to new homes. Their racing careers may have ended, but their lives don’t have to.” Saribel Cruz is a thoroughbred mare who retired from racing in 2008 when she received no bids at an end of season auction for thoroughbred racehorses and is descended from two of racing’s most famous horses, Seattle Slew and Mr. Prospector. As the sport of horseracing is turning it’s attention to the upcoming Kentucky Derby, Saribel Cruz will be making her debut as a hunter/jumper sport horse at the Hoosier Horse Fair, held at the Indiana State Fairgrounds on April 9-11, 2010. She represents the potential of rescued racehorses. Saribel Cruz, affectionately known as Flirt around the barn, is a fitting name for the first of Tony’s Stewart’s girls to enter Friends of Ferdinand’s adoption program. Saribel is an affectionate, kind and athletic young mare who prefers being a show-jumper rather than a racehorse. She was adopted from Friends of Ferdinand Inc one month ago by Foxton Farm (Romney, IN). Emily Lindsay, representing Foxton Farm, will be riding Saribel Cruz in a jumping clinic with the nationally recognized hunter-jumper instructor and 1992 “horseman of the year” Nick Karazissis. Saribel Cruz and Emily will be working with Nick to improve the form of both horse and rider over fences. Their session should be fast-paced and entertaining and is sponsored by the Hoosier Horse Fair and Indiana Hunter/Jumper Association in order to promote the rescued racehorse at this premier event. Saribel will be ridden from 4pm-6pm in the Toyota Blue Ribbon Pavillion at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. Opportunities to for the media and the public to meet Saribel Cruz are available preceding the clinic 2:30-3:30pm and immediately after the session from 6pm-7pm. Representatives of Tony Stewart Foundation, Friends of Ferdinand Inc, Hoosier Horse Fair and Foxton Farms will be on location for interviews and photographs. Friends of Ferdinand is named in memory of the magnificent Ferdinand, the 1986 Kentucky Derby Champion, Breeders’ Cup Classic winner and 1987 Horse of the Year who earned more than $4 million during his career. In 1989 he was retired from racing and exported to Japan to stand at stud. Tragically, a few years later, Ferdinand was slaughtered for human consumption. More information about Friends of Ferdinand may be found at www.friendsofferdinand.org. The mission of the Tony Stewart Foundation is to raise and donate funds to help care for critically ill children, drivers injured in motorsports activities and to support other charitable organizations in the protection of various animal species. More information about the Tony Stewart Foundation may be found at www.tonystewartfoundation.org.

Then Ringo Red rode in I’d heard about this thief He’d ruined a many`a cowboy Causin` nothing` but pain and grief

He took my Peace and Joy So I looked up on the hill Cried out to J. C. Things got quiet and still

J.C. kind` grinned Said glad I could help tonight I whipped Ring Red years ago So it weren’t much of a fight

Peace my blue-healer Was runnin` at our side Couldn’t call it workin` Just out for a ride

He asked me cowboy How was your day You ride for J. C. What does he pay

As I was cryin` out J.C. rode up Leadin` my pony Followed by my pup

John 10:10

As I rode along Just me and Peace and Joy Thought to myself I’m pretty lucky cowboy

I said it a’int really work He saved my sorry hide Then he gave me Peace and Joy And a thousand hills to ride

He said here’s your Peace and Joy They belong to you When Ringo Red returns You know what to do

Decided to camp out As the sun began to fall Out on the range Listenin` to the cattle bawl

Before I knew what happened He dowsed out the flame Then I heard his evil voice Red Ringo is my name

He’ll try to steal`em again But just cry out or yell He can’t take`m from you Cause they a’int allowed in hell

Got me a fire goin` Bed-roll on the ground The cows a sinin` There’s not a better sound

I know you ride for J. C. So I can’t kill you But I’m takin` your Peace and Joy Yep that’s what I’ll do

I said thank you J. C. For returnin` them to me He replied cowboy That’s how it will always be

The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. By: Bro. Brad Curtis, Vilonia, AR Copyright 1/19/11

espite a white forecast, contestants loaded their trucks and trailers and made their way to Murfreesboro, TN for the IBRA Futurity and Preferred show. IBRA nor its contestants were accustomed to such weather accompanying this show, but everyone suited up, had a good time and went on running for their shot at going home richer.

Fridays Open $2000 Added

The show started out in typical style on Friday with the arena being opened to contestants looking to get in a few exhibitions on their young horses in the Tennessee Miller Coliseum. After a days worth of warm ups, $2,000 was added to the Open 4-D pot giving riders of all ages and skill

their shot at some prize money. It would be draw 82 who would take the top spot in the 1-D with a time of 15.341. The pair of Jamie Cagle and Dashin Live Rockette are very familiar with the arena and show, as they stormed last years Guaranteed class winning by almost 2 tenths. The 2-D and 3-D win was taken by a lady who drew more checks than anyone for the entire weekend raking in over $3,000 and 10 checks 6 of which came on Friday night. In addition to her 2-D and 3-D win, Marne Loosenort and Easy Down Honor fell less than 4 hundreths of a second short from capturing the one 1-D win, placing her second to Jamie. Marne also placed 6th in the 1-D, 2nd in the 2-D (to herself) and 5th in the 3-D (again to herself). The 4-D win was captured by David Brunck and Scarlet with their 17.375.

Futurity 1st Go Round

With the water now well tested, and most everybody checked in and settled in, Barrel Racing was everyone’s main priority Saturday morning. Spectators began to fill the stands bright and early to be sure they wouldn’t miss the future of Barrel Racing, as the Futurity was the first race to run. Last years Futurity champion, Kebo Almond, made his return in a big way placing first and third in the first go of the Futurity. Kebo aboard Pita Perks flew out with a 15.733 to win and jockeyed TBR Bug McCall to run a 16.009 for third place right behind April Wood and Blue Ribbon Brown who took second. The second division was won by a force to soon be reckoned with, Craig Brooks and Perksamericanrose, clocking a 16.304. Danny Braun and Distance The Boyz came in for a third division win with a time of 16.759.

The $10,000 Guaranteed, was sure to be an exciting race with Friday’s winners anxiously being awaited by spectators. Kristi Skimehorn and KK April Fool, proved that consistency pays when they placed second on Saturday, up 3 spots from their 5th place finish Friday night. The pair posted two very consistent times with a 15.652 on Friday and a 15.623 on Saturday, earning nearly $1,000 for just over a half a minutes worth of competition. It would be Douglas Hall, a familiar face and 1-D check winner from last year who would Runnaway with the fastest time of the day and $1080, posting a 15.425 aboard Runnaway Pie. The 2-D was won by another familiar pair and 1-D frequent check earners at IBRA events, Billy Hatzman and Jet Bars Faith. The pair took fourth place in last years Friday Open 4-D, but increased their total earnings this year with the 2-D win, to over $800. Billy and Jet Bars Faith are currently leading the KY standings for points in Open 1-D. The third division win along with $540 was taken by Bars And Sixes, with the guidance of Chase Trent. Kristina Broadway just has a little knack for running the right time. Kristina and Justa Little Nac took home $270 for their 4-D win.

Youth

1D

$1,000 Added Youth

Several veterans to the IBRA ran in Saturdays Youth 3-D. Although Nicole Love is still able to run youth, she has been running and winning IBRA races longer than many Open and Masters contestants. Nicole and RUA Panama shut the clock off with an impressive 15.746, placing Kalab Ferrell and TF Jetsscootinwonder just right for a 2-D win. Austin Nicks won his fair share of checks for the weekend including his 3-D Youth win aboard Pepper. Austin and his trusty mount raked in nearly $450 over the course of the weekend, drawing a check in every class he entered.

$1,000 Added Masters

The Masters was won by the same man who won the 1st Go of the Futurity earlier in the day. Kebo Almond aboard Philty proved he could master them all with a 15.807, pocketing $384. Joan Pittman and Simba stopped the clock with the right time to win the 2-D. HF Docs Little Money ran a 17.865 for jockey Katelyn McKinney to take home the 3-D win.

Sunday Church Service

The Needhams seemed to rejoice even more than usual as they lead the crowd in Sundays Cowboy Church service. The Needhams have become a staple for bringing contestants back to God after a weekend of good timing at IBRA events. In addition to the normal crew Mrs. Needham showed up to support the group. Murfreesboro is the hometown to the Needhams making it a little easier weekend on the family. As usual, the crowd was wowed by the talent and message that the Needhams deliver in a strong way.

Futurity 2nd Go Round

Announcer, Matt Josephs voice carried a little higher only two horses into the 2nd go of the futurity as he knew the 1st Go winner, Kebo Almond, would give the crowd something to see. Upon his departure Kebo had set the mark high with a 15.916. Jimmy Cagle and Corey Breedlove would soon remind everyone that they hadn’t left yet besting Kebo to finish 2nd and 3rd. It would be the 1st Go Rounds 2-D winner that would not only win the class but also the average. Craig Brooks and Perskamericanrose took everyones breath with only two entries left in the class. It will sure be fun to watch this pair run through their futurity year.

Sunday’s $2,000 Added Open 4-D

Only 15 entries into the Open Fridays winner, Jamie Cagle, set a fast pace that went untested for nearly an hour and a half. At draw 96, however, Mindy Williams and Sweet Definition made a sweet run posting a 15.286, defining the fastest time of the day and the weekend. Nicole Love and RUA Panama clocked a 15.804 to be the right time for 1st in the 2-D taking nearly $500 home her efforts. Another veteran to Murfreesbo having won several classes and divisions at IBRA evens Amber Mostoller and her new mount NNN Sixums Topgun came out with just the right time of a 16.324 to win the 3-D. It would be left to Sydney Ely Darnell and Dee Dee to win the 4-D with a 17.361. Snow, rain and a little ice slowed things down a bit compared to normal for the show, but after all was said and done it was another tuff weekend of competition and plenty of money was paid out. The IBRA would like to thank all of those who made there way down despite the weather and welcome everyone to join them again at their next Futurity at Circle G arena in Lewisburg, OH March 25-27th. Part 2 - Neighbors...... and Being Neighborly

Big Ole’ Duke, the neighbor dog, hasn’t been down in a while. I think his owners got tired of running down here to get him every other day. I’m not sure if I should say this or not, but I guess it can’t hurt since the other dogs around here can’t read. I wouldn’t want them to think I am getting soft - since I am the senior dog around here. But, I have to admit that I kind of miss the big lug. I know last month I complained of him hanging around all the time and all, but he really wasn’t so bad. He kind of kept the three big dogs busy so I could get in some good mousing time out in the barn. Although I don’t miss the Duke droppings....they’re probably not as easy to miss now that the snow has melted. I was right. Annabelle found my Christmas present. It didn’t take her long either. Now my brand new dog bed has been “Annified.” And for those who are wondering what the definition of “Annified” is, it

is simple....in one word it means “ruined.” That’s right, she got ahold of it and once again - green stuffing now on the outside of the bed, not the inside. Of course, the one person in the house who finds her in the act would be the one who has also been “Annified.” (Once again - the definition is “ruined” - Annie has ruined her.) In a nutshell - Princess Annabelle has her wrapped around her little paw....so when she was caught with the green stuffing hanging out of her mouth, all she got was an “Awww, Annie, are you being bad? Or do you just want a bed of your own?” OMG!!! (FYI - I text 2 - lol!) Poor little Annablle chews up bed number two for yours truly and then she gets sympathy because she doesn’t have her own bed to chew on. I give up. Did I mention that it is finally warming up a bit here? It is great, I can actually stand to go outside and stay for a while. It’s nice to get away from the little bark box for longer than what it takes to “do my business.” She usually ends up out there with me when the people go to the barn. It doesn’t take her long to beckon the “Annified” one and she has this one convinced to carry her back to the house whenever she yips. Like she couldn’t use the excercise! It is pitiful. She’ll look at me and say “Watch this” and then give out a little yip. Then, here comes the “Annified one” and it’s “Awwww, Annie, are you cold? Do you want me to take you to the house? You poor little thing.....it’s too muddy out here for you, Princess.....” Then as she picks her up, Annie gives me a “sorry about your luck” look and she’s swooped off to the house. All I can say is “GOOD RIDDENS!” More alone time for me. One thorn temporarily removed from my side, now where is that Duke? I could use a distraction for these three big outside dogs so I can get to mousing. Until next month.... Don’t get “Annified”

Cowboy Mounted Shooting

Raw Horsepower - Hard Ridin’ - Straight Shootin’ 1st Ohio Cowboy Mounted Shooters 1st Ohio Shooters hosted their 2010 year end Cowboy Ball in January at the Kings Island Resort Center. The evening started with entertainment by the Avalon’s, a 50’s-60’s group of singers/entertainers (we met The Little’Ol Lady from Pasadena!) 1st Ohio shooter, Greg Couch is a member of this group. WOW! These guys can really sing. After a delicious dinner, awards were presented to the 1st Ohio Shooters. Our program presents awards to members according to the number of 1st Ohio shoots attended throughout the year. Jackets, vests, sweatshirts and more were passed out. Special items were also given to the members and volunteers that helped throughout the year, without their assistance it would be impossible to produce a quality shoot. Some of our Cowboys and Cowgirls dressed in 1800 clothing, Cowgirls in beautiful satin dresses draped in lace and handsome Cowboys in their frock coats and Sunday cowboy hats, some chose to dress more modern in suede, wranglers, ranch or rodeo outfits. It was truly an enjoyable evening visiting with everyone catching up on wintertime activities and discussing upcoming events. 1st Ohio Cowboy Mounted Shooters, we now have Royalty among us! Miss Brittany Norris of Lawrenceburg, Indiana and Miss Marisa Osborne, of Franklin, Ohio have each been crowned, of their respective age groups, the 2011 QUEEN of the 4 State Junior Rodeo Association. Each candidate was asked to show special maneuvers with their horses. Brittany rode JoJo, over jumps, pulled a log, carried a flag and did a shooting demo to complete her competition. 9 year old Marisa, rode Smoke, a big sorrel gelding owned by shooters Dan & Connie App. She was required to ride her horse to show off what she can do with him. She also had to speak and she spoke loud and clear for everyone to hear. Marisa finished her demo by stopping Smoke, sitting in her saddle, turning around backwards and sliding over his bottom. As Queens, both girls will pass out ribbons to the younger Rodeo class events and help anyone in need at the Rodeo’s. Congratulations to both of these young ladies on their recent achievements, both have grown up in Cowboy Mounted shooting starting about the age of 5 and both girls are honor students at their schools. CMSA is a family sport, our youth program is second to none. We offer a Wrangler division for those cowboys and cowgirls under 12 years of age. The Limited, 9 & under, ride and learn to maneuver their mount through the different patterns. The Open, under 12, ride the pattern, simulate shooting each balloon however they are required with supervision to stand on the ground to shoot their targets. Safety is our main objective, the young cowboys & cowgirls learn how to better control their mount along with respect and how to handle a firearm safely. The Wranglers are offered competition not only at the local level but also compete at the 5 big shoots produced by the National association, including the World. As our youth mature and ride through the ranks, college scholarships are also available.

Page 38

New to CMSA in 2011 is the tracking of Rifle points. In the Rifle class, the shooter shoots the first 5 targets with his/her pistol and the rundown with a Rifle. There are three kinds of rifles used in mounted shooting competition. The lever action rifle, pump action rifle and the revolving carbine. Although the level action is more traditional and dominant in the sport, the revolving carbine is gaining ground for its similarities to the single action revolver. Competing in the Rifle Class requires expertise with two different kinds of firearms. You and your horse need to be in perfect partnership and you should have a high level of confidence in your abilities. Most Rifle shooters drop the reins after the first balloon is shot on the rundown this enables them to use both hands and arms to aim and shoot the rifle. If you would like to know more about Cowboy Mounted Shooting or want to experience the most fun you’ll ever have on horseback, check out www.1stohio.com and contact us we will be glad to help you get started. 1st Ohio has lots of fun shoots coming up with clinics for new and seasoned shooters and new horses. Com’on over and spend some time at the arena, spectators are always free. Ride fast, shoot straight and have fun! Buckskin Barbee cmsa65@aol.com

CMSA News Indiana Rough Riders

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Howdy Everyone! This month the Indiana Rough Riders would like to introduce you to one of our Wranglers, Mekena Morgan. Mekena is six years old and currently in Kindergarten at Arlington Elementary School. She began her shooting career when she was three years old riding her miniature horse Skeeter, but now that she’s older she likes competing on the bigger horses. Mekena travels the road with her Grandmother Karen Lee (Alias Nanny-Oakley) and as you can see in the photo, when she’s not competing during a shoot she likes to practice her trick riding. In Mekena’s spare time she likes to camp, sing, dance and hang out with Grandma and her CMSA family. Keep up the good work Mekena.

It’s A Family Affair. . Featuring..... The Hornberger Brothers

Hello!!

Hope everyone is thawed out from the ice, snow and rain. We have not had a full week of school since mid December (I will be in school all summer). Spring is just around the corner, will be here before we know it. I have been trying to ride but what good is it when you have a indoor arena and can’t get from the barn to the indoor arena because of ice? This month I interviewed a couple of my friends and tuff competitors.....

Logan & Lane

What’s your full name? Logan: Logan Michael Hornberger Lane: Lane Paul Hornberger

How long have you been riding barrel horses? Logan: 13 years Lane: 8 years

What is your horses name? Tell me about your horse, mare or gelding? breeding? any unusual habits?

Logan: Cashin the Policy (Suzy) AQHA Mare. Suzy’s habit is that, just before her run, she throws her head to the ground and will yank the reins out of your hand. Suzy is now retired, so I’m not sure who I will be running because when I broke my leg, my brother stole my other horse.

Who are your parents? Darrin & Kris Do they ride? Dad breaks and trains horses and is always looking for the next barrel race. Mom rides & runs barrels and poles. What school do you go to and what grade? Logan: Rushville Consolidated High School - Sophomore Lane: Mays Elementary - Grade 5

Lane: Thunder, Gelding . He was a great horse for me to start on because he taught me alot so I wasn’t afraid to go fast. His funny habit is he has to lay down at the horse shows to take a nap and sleep so we have to tie him with a bungee tie. At the end of last year a started riding Mercy. Smooth Talkin Play (Mercy) AQHA Mare. She is funny because she creeps into the alley way and then all of the sudden takes off so I better be ready. She also kicks the trailer at 7 a.m. at the horse shows because it is time to eat.

Clint is a 17 year old junior he is enrolled in Abeka Academy homeschool. His parents are Terrie VanVolkenburgh and respectively Joe Trentman. He has grown up in the horse world, both parents have rode almost all their life...Clint's grandfather as some of you may remember was the late Terry VanVolkenburgh, who would run up and down the fences when his daughters would run barrels. Clint began barrel racing at the age of 4 with a pony, then went on to particpate in Jr. Rodeo and his favorite event was the sheep riding, had to believe he is now a barrel racer. He has won the Ohio Youth NBHA and Indiana Youth and Open NBHA , he has also won the congress youth barrel four times, and was runner up in the Congress Sweepstakes, placed at Josey Jr. world numerous times, and won the NBHA Youth World 1d in 2006. He loves to barrel race and is now trying his hand at the futurities. In Clint's spare time he mows grass for a part time job and is also very active in his church where he and his cousins are bible school helpers. Clint also volunteers one day a week at a school in Cincinatti where he spends time tutoring other kids in reading.

Ready to Rodeo!

now, ice and short day light hours have had many of the IJRA members feeling restless! Parents keep reassuring their kids that the rodeo season will pick up soon. For some of the Cinch Junior High Division contestants that time is now! On March 26th and 27th, Kentucky will be hosting the Quad State rodeo in Greenville, KY. The Cinch contestants are legging up their horses, hitting the practice pen and focusing on their goals. The Indiana Cinch Junior High Division team will compete against teams from Kentucky, Illinois and Missouri.

their qualifying spot for the Cinch Junior High Division National Finals held June 26th – July 2nd in Gallup, New Mexico. For those of you who are not familiar with the Cinch Junior High Division, it is a nation -wide program that allows 6th, 7th and 8th grade students to compete with other members in their state. At the end of the season, the Top 4 contestants in each event, from each state, qualify to make the trip to compete at the Cinch Junior High Division National Finals. There are approximately 900 contestants at this week long finals, all who are the “best of the best” from the United States, Australia and Canada. Contestants can qualify in one or more events. Cinch Division Girls compete in Barrel Racing, Pole Bending, Goat Tying, Break Away Roping, Ribbon Roping and Team Roping. The 6th-8th grade boys can compete in Team Roping, Calf Roping or Break Away Roping, Goat Tying, Ribbon Roping, Chute Dogging and Bull Riding. 2010-2011 Indiana Cinch Junior High Division Team Girls Jessie Hoagland, Sydney Hurley, Anna Dietrich, Brianna Belden, Addie Keller, Lois Thomas, Renea Johnson, Madelyn Losier, Mary Lloyd, Macy Sutkowski and Katlyn O’Leary. Boys Zach Hunter, Lane McPheeters, Michael Shreeve, Jordan Banta, Kyle Mackey, Casey Coll, Brayton Deweese, Trevor Colby, Dylan Watson, Gavin McGary, Jacob Rorig and Gary Hook

www.ijra.org

After the Quad State rodeo in March, there will be two additional Cinch Junior High Division rodeos that will give contestants the chance to earn points and positions in their events. The April IJRA rodeo in Edinburgh will be a qualifying Cinch rodeo, as well as a co-approved IHSRA (Indiana High School Rodeo Association) rodeo. The New Castle, IN rodeo on April 30-May 1st is also the Indiana Cinch Division Finals that will determine who will be packing their trailer, loading their horses and hitting the Cinch National Finals rodeo trail. Cinch team members are working hard to claim one of the top four positions in each event in the Indiana Cinch standings to secure

IJRA News Indiana Cinch Junior High Division Team member, Mary Loyd

The Cinch Division also recognizes each state’s Cinch All-Star Team. This team is made up of the members in each state who qualify in the Top 10 in each event the previous year. The 2010-2011 Indiana Cinch All-Star Team members are Michael Shreeve, Strand Barricklow, Jordan Banta, Lane McPheeters, Zach Hunter, Jessie Hoagland, Sydney Hurley and Renea Johnson. Contestants Jessie Hoagland and Strand Barricklow also hold the honors of being Academic Team and Elite Team members. For cowboys and cowgirls planning on attending college, Cinch Junior High Division can help you get there. Colleges offering rodeo scholarships often look to see if students have been Cinch All-Star Team members and for how long. What is even more exciting, is the fact that Cinch Division gives away $100,000 in scholarship money and thousands of dollars in prizes at the Cinch Junior High Division National Finals each year. Scholarship money won is based on standings and can be used at the college of the student’s choice.

Member Spotlight

IJRA Preschool Rodeo Cowboys and Cowgirls The Indiana Junior Rodeo Association has a wonderful group of cowboys and cowgirls that stand out in and out of the arena. IJRA families have watched many kids grow and learn a lot about the sport of rodeo while building their rodeo skills. But ask any of these families about IJRA, and what you are more likely to hear about are the valuable life lessons, lasting friendships and memories their children have learned or made over the years. Many of the current Cinch Division contestants began their rodeo career through their start in IJRA Preschool rodeo. The Preschool rodeo started by a group of parents who had young children that wanted to be in the rodeo just like their older brothers and sisters. The Preschool rodeo has continued over the years and is a big deal to every preschooler entered! Here’s what a few have to say about competing in the IJRA Preschool Rodeo.

Gunnar & Cade

Cade Morris: It’s really fun. I learned you always keep your dip down and point your finger at the head when Bale Roping. Carlie Pickett: I like Barrels and Poles, but mostly like playing with my friends. Drew Thomas: I love running fast on the way back from barrels, poles and goats and I like getting a prize. Kinlyn Yadon: I like it because I like horses and I like to put glitter on them and making them pretty. And I like to go fast on Scoobster.

Preschool rodeo events include: Mutton Busting, Bale Dogging, Dummy Roping, Barrel Racing, Pole Bending and Goat Tail Untying. Always Pray & Never Give Up

Luke 18: 1-8 Parable of the Persistent Widow 1 One day Jesus told his disciples a story to show that they should always pray and never give up. 2 “There was a judge in a certain city,” he said, “who neither feared God nor cared about people. 3 A widow of that city came to him repeatedly, saying, ‘Give me justice in this dispute with my enemy.’ 4 The judge ignored her for a while, but finally he said to himself, ‘I don’t fear God or care about people, 5 but this woman is driving me crazy. I’m going to see that she gets justice, because she is wearing me out with her constant requests!’” 6 Then the Lord said, “Learn a lesson from this unjust judge. 7 Even he rendered a just decision in the end. So don’t you think God will surely give justice to his chosen people who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? 8 I tell you, he will grant justice to them quickly! But when the Son of Man[a] returns, how many will he find on the earth who have faith?”

L

For some reason, I picture this particular little woman in a courtroom like you would see on one of those popular TV lawyer shows.....like Law & Order or maybe Boston Legal. I can picture a corrupt judge who is annoyed by this harmless but persistent little widow (maybe played by Betty White?) She is just driving him crazy, constantly requesting that he do something to handle her problem... she’s there everyday - the judge finally grows fond of the sweet little lady and at the end of the show he finally does the right thing and the bad guys go to jail, the widow gets her house back and everybody lives happily ever after.

I’ll start by letting you read through the part that seemed to speak to me.

Although I know that is a “modern day version,” it still gives you an idea of how the judge may have initially looked upon the widow. And even though he did not care about her or God, he still granted her request because she would not give up. (Just

uke 18:1-8 seems to have been my scripture of the month for al of this past month. It seemed like every time I opened my bible, turned on the radio or walked into Sunday School, Luke 18 was the text being discussed. And of course, it was fitting to my personal situation....so I figured what better scripture to write about this month than Luke 18. Why break the pattern, huh?

Last & most important thought… Salvation is a gift and a choice...... Jesus died on the cross as the final sacrifice. When He was resurrected on the 3rd day, he defeated Satan for us. All we have to do is believe that He beat death and acknowledge it with our words. If we believe that and accept Him as our personal savior…we are promised eternal life with Him in Heaven. You can’t earn your way into Heaven; you have to believe your way there. So many people think they “aren’t good enough” to get to Heaven… But… Salvation is a GIFT from God and you don’t earn a gift. Gifts are something someone gives to you and for the gift to be yours, you have to accept it. All we have to do is accept that wonderful gift. I know I have…won’t you?

Page 50

But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. Romans 5:15 For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Romans 10: 9-10

CHRISTIAN COWBOY COLLECTION like it says to do at the beginning of our passage.) When I get to the second part of the scripture - the part that compares one extreme to the other, an unjust judge to God - it is then that I realize what Jesus was trying to show us. God is already fond of us, he loves us....if we go to him with a request, wouldn’t he be much more inclined to answer our prayer than this judge was to answer the widows? The connecting link is the “not giving up” part. If something is that important to me (or you), then shouldn’t we be like the widow? Shouldn’t we be willing to spend some time requesting through prayer? If my request is legitimate and worthy of God’s time.....then I should be asking him

through prayer almost constantly. In the grocery store, in the car, at work, when I am riding my horse.... He WILL answer and “grant justice to them quickly.” Of course, the answer may not be exactly how we pictured it would be. That is always hard to take. It may be disguised as something that is only apparent to us further down the road when we look back on the situation. But He WILL answer. I’m sure you have heard this before, but it’s worth including...God will answer with a “YES”, “NO” or a “WAIT.” Just remember that He knows best. (Easier said than done.) I am sure you can look back at your life and see where God’s hand was right there all along in

Fence Talk

w/ Christa Conway certain situations when it seemed like at the time that you were all alone and there was no hope. Hindsight is 20/20, right? It amazes me at how often I am able to do that.... to look back and realize that God allowed certain things to take place for an end result that could only happen under circumstances that caused me pain. In the end it was that pain that would help to make me stronger and happier. During those painful moments I was probably a stressed out mess, but he was there with me, urging me to never give up. l next month.... always pray and never give up.... Happy Trails & God Bless! Mystery of the Month.... Well, we’re back at it! Thanks to those who responded to our request and sent us their pictures from the past.

This month we have a couple of Mystery Cowgirls. These pictures date back to the early 1960s and the young cowgirls are sisters, ages 4 and 6. Their mother sent these pictures in of these two cuties and their trick ponies. She let us know the following hints about these sisters, read on to see if you can name these cowgirls and be this months winner. One of these ladies is still very active in the horse industry. The sisters shown in our Mystery of the month were always performing tricks on their ponies. They also showed them in pony pleasure and the gaming classes. The competed in 4H and did very well. Each of the sisters went on to become barrel racers and eventually joined the NBHA which brought some winnings and championships along the way. One of the two sisters has since given up the barrel racing scene and drives a semi for a living. The other sister claimed an NBHA State title in 2010 in Indiana (although this is not her home state.) Their mother is involved in one of the longest running barrel racing futurities east of the Mississippi. Do you know this pair of cute little cowgirls? If you do, email us, text us, or call us with your answer. You could be this month’s winner of a FREE subscription, a FREE “Horsey-T” or a “Horsey Hat.” Just be the first to correctly ID our Mystery cowgirls and we’ll do the rest. Email us at thehorseresource@msn.com - Call or text to 765-744-7363 Good Luck!! Don’t forget, we need you to be sending us those photos from the past....we’d like to use them in our Mystery of the Month. Horses, people, events, etc... Send via email to: thehorseresource@msn.com or mail to The Horse Resource 12601 S CR 200 W Muncie, IN 47302 We will return your original photos to you.
