Important Information for 2012 Regarding Existing Out of Competition Rules

All horses nominated to stake races will be eligible for out of competition testing from the day of nomination. Several drugs were added to Out of Competition Testing for 2011 including Zilpaterol, Ractopamine or any similar agent. If you have any questions about any of these rules, please refer to Indiana Code 71 IAC 8.5-2-5 and 71 IAC 8.5-3-4. You may also contact the Indiana Horse Racing Commission at http://www.in.gov/hrc/ or (317) 233-3120. How This Affects You • Once a horse is nominated to a stake race, he WILL be in the pool of horses used for selection of Out of Competition Testing. • If the owner/trainer has been contacted and notified that their horse has been selected for Out of Competition Testing, that horse must be produced at the track by the time provided by the IHRC. • If the horse is not brought to the race track within the allotted time, the horse will be ineligible to race in Indiana for one year. • The current trainer MUST be named at the time of nomination. If there is a change of trainer at any time, the new information must be forwarded to the Q.H.R.A.I. immediately. • If a nominated horse becomes lame, sick or for any other reason will NOT compete in the trials or finals, he must be officially scratched through the QHRAI (prior to being contacted by IHRC) or he will remain eligible for ALL Out of Competition Rules. • Except for stake races where high money earners are preferred, there will be no refunds of nominations or payments. By signing and submitting this stakes nomination form, the trainer is hereby agreeing to abide by Indiana Horse Racing code. Once this nomination is received by QHRAI, you will receive a reminder for next payment date and a list of nominated horses. Sustaining payments must be submitted on time whether or not you receive this reminder. Nominations and sustaining payments will be added to the stakes purses. A 20% marketing and administration fee will be withheld from all open stakes nomination and sustaining payments. Late payments - If nomination is missed - double the missed nomination plus the first sustaining payment. Must be postmarked by the first sustaining payment date. Late pay after first sustaining payment is double missed payments plus $5,000 plus 2nd sustaining payment. Must be postmarked by June 1st. No late Nominations or payments accepted after June 1st (or after final sustaining payment date, whichever is earliest).

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

H

appy Spring! (Well, it’s just around the corner!) Considering our February has been the most mild I can ever remember, I am getting really excited about Spring. We’ve already been riding after a few months off and I am ready to get to a show. I’ve got the (horse) bug that most of us get this time of year!

This month is exciting for us here at The Horse Resource (even more so than usual...) We are pleased to welcome the Indiana Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (ITOBA) as one of the organizations who will be sharing their information with members (and potential members) in each of our issues. This addition is personally exciting for me because one of the best barrel horses standing in my barn (Butler Did It) is out of a Thoroughbred mare. Although I personally find my passion in barrel racing, I have had some great experiences with Thoroughbred horses. I hope this new addition can help to unite us as horsemen and women in the pursuit of sharing our passion for these marvelous creatures. As a matter of fact, I have a rather interesting connection to share with you all. It is just a small example of how we are all linked somehow when it comes to these horses. Years ago (we won’t say how long...lol!) I trained and rode a beautiful sorrel grand-daughter of the famous thoroughbred Secretariat. Believe it or not, she made a very nice barrel horse and I even claimed some wins on her back. This mare belonged to a gentleman who is now very involved in the Cowboy Mounted Shooting and has many championships under his belt. (Hello, Gary Wilson of Ohio!) Until next month.........Check us out to see what we’re up to on facebook after you’ve came in from the barn, and while you’re out there, don’t forget to count your blessings on horseback! God Bless and Ride Safe, Christa Conway

A Little “Barrel Talk” Here’s a portion of a Hot topic on Barrel Horse World’s Barrel Talk.....Enjoy!

Equine First Aid Kit Iwish - Posted 2012-02-21 12:46 PM (#6175399) Extreme Veteran Posts: 515 Location: somewhere..... besides vet wrap what are some must haves in a equine first aid kit? Is Iodine or betadine better? cannchaser21 Regular Posts: 58 Location: Las Vegas My first aid kit is huge. I have vet wrap, elasticon, gauze pads, gauze rolls, duct tape, needles syringes, oral syringes, bute, antibiotics, Lidocane, sutures, sedatives, Betadine, Vetericyn, Terramycin, banamine, bandage sissors, hemostats for the sutures, forceps, non stick telfa pads, NFZ, hmmmm im sure i have more. Ive been too many places where the closest vet is over an hour away so im prepared :) Iwish wow, that is alot of stuff. I dont travel anywhere with my horse yet. I will definantly get some banamine and bute, there definate must haves. Where can you get sedatives? Thanks for the help can chaser. ACEINTHEHOLE Elite Veteran Posts: 1005 Location: Sperry, OK Legally you can’t have sedatives without a lisense. They are controlled narcotics that need specific government required documentation. Depending on the Vet/client relationship, some vets will sell bottles of Xyalzine to some clinets...as they trust their use and judgement, but that is even a little on the shady side and “could” be fined by officials if caught. Iwish o, well no thanks then lol. I will let me vet handle that.

project and won a Grand Champion with it at the County Fair and took it to State Fair. Here is what she had in it and a picture of it... Epsom Salt - reduce swelling, draw out toxins Blood Stop Powder - stops bleeding from wounds/cuts immediately, Hoof Pick, Stethoscope , Vitamins & Electrolytes - used to reduce the effects of stressors from transporting/competition, Syringe & Needles, Hand Sanitizer , Latex Gloves , Saline Solution - like contact solution - used to wash out injuries or foreign objects from eyes, Gauze pads, Bute, Rectal Thermometer, Vaseline - use for lube for thermometer, Iodine, Hydrogen Peroxide - used for cleaning wounds, Vet Wrap, Polo Wrap, Elastic Tape - To put at end of wrap to hold in place, Tweezers, Phone #’s of Vet & Farrier, Antibiotic Ointment, Hoof Knife , Scissors , Instant Cool Pack - the kind where you break capsule inside pack and then it gets cold, Rubbing Alcohol - used to sterilize scissors, tweezers, etc., Clean rags - She put in a roll of shop towels (like paper towels but tougher), Pocket Knife, Belt - to use as a tourniquet, Duct tape. Now you certainly wouldn’t need all of these things for travel - this First Aid Kit is designed more to have in your barn. But since she put it together, we have used it a fair amount. Not just for the horses but for us, the dogs, etc. It has come in very handy! Outwest Expert Posts: 2224 Location: Oregon Chuckie your daughter made a great list. Here’s a link that has a list suggestions from a vet. http://www.aerc. org/ENFeb07Edu.asp

Iwish feminine pads work great. I have had to use them before.

ruggedchica Life Saver Posts: 9151 Location: Sundogs and NO Snowstorms - Montana! Something that I’ve done is to dilute Novalsan. Put it in a leakproof container, then put a bunch of gauze (or cotton, or whatever you prefer) in the container. If you have a cut, all you need to do is grab the container and it’s already mixed up and has gauze for cleaning the wound. Another thing I’ve done for Epsom Salts is to measure out the amount you will need into an empty plastic milk jug. Then when you need to use them all you have to do is add warm water and shake them up. Easy and no mess!

chuckie31 Regular Posts: 67 My daughter did an Equine First Aid Kit as a Horse Related 4-H

RanchAngel Extreme Veteran Posts: 339 Location: Deep South Actually depending on the state you are in. I have a sedative (tube)

rubyduby Elite Veteran Posts: 627 Location: Wellsville, Missouri peroxide, rubbing alcohol. I even keep feminine pads in mine since my mare cut the sole of her foot pretty deep. Duct taped it on until I could get a hospital pad to put on her.

that the vet gave me months ago (dont know the name, not going to look either, broke ankle and its in the trailer). And this is a straight arrow kinda vet too. So if its against the law he wouldnt have given it to me. He also told me it was new and he had just got it, been like 6 months ago. RanchAngel RE: Chuckie31 Nice kit. Wished mine was this small. I have a whole cabnet in the trailer with stuff & a bag. Also agree with items. Plus a few more. Iwish Thank you for all the help guys! WeaveNLeaveEM Elite Veteran Posts: 785 Location: Where we pump our fists, not our gas =) Im glad someone finally asked about this because i’ve always wondered what i would need! My kit isnt huge but it has the basics (scissors, gauze, bute, vetrap, cutheal, alcohol wipes, corona, ductape, stethescope, stitching “equipment”, and of course... treats lol). Iwish for polo wraps are they just regular polo wraps like the classic equine ones or diffrent ones? chuckie31 mine is just a regular velcro polo wrap - works to hold large bandage or ice pack in place. Iwish Nitrofurazone ointment, is it kinda the same as cut n heal as in do they both do the same thing just ones liquid the other one is a ointment. Ponygirl67 The paste sedative is probably Dormosedan gel. Great stuff and easy to use in the paste form! My vet provided me a tube also.

News Grade 1 winning stallion Trisk dies of laminitis

Hospital appreciate the heartfelt sympathy and understanding the mares owners have shown for the loss of this great stallion. We also appreciate the sympathy from everyone who has called. Losing a great horse is always tough. Trisk was set up well as he was coming to the Florida racing and breeding scene just as it is about to step up to the next level.”

Hialeah Closes with Four Stakes Skyline Lover named Horse of the Meet at Florida track.

Press Release - February 19, 2012 - A season-high live crowd and a record

on-track handle put the exclamation points on the completion of the third season of live American Quarter Horse racing at historic Hialeah Park on Sunday.

Press Release - February 20, 2012 - AVS Equine Hospital of Tallahassee,

Florida, and Lucas Racing Inc. of New Market, Maryland, are saddened to announce that Grade 1 winner Trisk had to be euthanized recently due to complications from laminitis. Trisk, an accredited Florida stallion, was scheduled to stand the 2012 breeding season at AVS Equine Hospital after his quarantine in Miami from standing at stud in Brazil. He already had a good book of quality mares waiting on him. Trisk showed sign of laminitis shortly after he arrived at the Miami quarantine station. He was treated immediately. Early on it appeared that the condition might stabilize and he would be able to take care of his stud duties for 2012. However as horses with laminitis often do, he had another episode and the condition became unsalvageable. “It was a great loss to Lucas Racing, who raised and raced Trisk and his champion brothers Wave Carver and Ocean Runaway. It was also a loss to AVS Equine Hospital as we had looked forward to having Trisk in our stallion lineup for a number of years. We take pride in standing stallions with excellent conformation and great families and he sure fit the bill. It takes a lot of looking to find a good stallion prospect that exhibits all of his qualities,” AVS said in a press release. “Trisk had booked a good group of mares, because he was an outstanding individual and an extremely well-bred individual in his own right. His foals conceived in 2012 would have been eligible for the 2015 $200,000 Guaranteed Florida bred Futurity and accredited Florida bred owners and breeders awards. “While this is a sad day for everyone involved, at the end of the day we want the breeders that had decided to breed to Trisk to be happy. AVS Equine Hospital also stands Grade 1 winner Streakin Six Cartel, Grade 1 winner and world champion sire Bono Jazz and AAA AQHA Supreme Champion Mr Joe Im Kool. “The 2013 foals by these stallions will also be eligible for the 2015 $200,000 Guaranteed Florida Bred Futurity and their foals will be eligible for owners and breeders awards since they are all accredited Florida stallions. All three of these stallions are very impressive to see in person and all three have excellent conformation. We have already talked to most of the breeders that were breeding to Trisk and they have chosen the stallion here that they wish to sire their 2015 Florida Bred Futurity contender. “Dan and Michelle Lucas of Lucas Racing and everyone at AVS Equine

An estimated 6,000 ebullient fans enjoyed closing day festivities under absolutely gorgeous South Florida weather conditions. The attendance figure was easily the best of the season and by some accounts the biggest live crowd since racing returned to this historical setting in 2009-2010. Bettors wagered $122,911, an all-time Quarter Horse high at Hialeah Park, as part of a total mutuel handle of $264,196. On track, the fans saw Logans Dash, Skyline Lover, Ima Gator Fan and Jess A Runner emerge with stakes victories on the final day of the 32-day season. Logans Dash (Toast To Dash-Logans Game), trained by Manuel Mata and ridden by Jeremy Garcia for owner Annibal Hernandez, bested Count The Menace by a neck in the $22,750 Three Cherries Stakes at 300 yards. The 3-year-old filly, who was bred by Triple M Farms LLC, recorded her third consecutive stakes victory of the meet. The Louisiana-bred also captured the Biscayne Stakes and Miami-Dade County Stakes. Skyline Lover (Feature Mr Jess-Loves That Gold), known affectionately as “Hialeah’s Horse,” never broke a sweat under Shanley Jackson in winning the 1,000-yard, $27,000 Sailfish Stakes by four lengths as the 3-10 favorite over Checotah Dale. Scoring for the third time in as many tries at the unusual distance, Skyline Lover, trained by Matt Frazier, earned $16,585 for owner Dan Frazier and drove his lifetime winnings to just over $290,000. Bred in the Lone Star State by James G. Burgess, M.D., the 6-year-old gelding has crossed the wire first in all eight of his career starts at Hialeah with the only blemish being the Moonstone Stakes in January when he was disqualified from first and placed eighth for interference. In the $193,150 South Florida Quarter Horse Derby, Ima Gator Fan (City Place [TB]-Ima Special Rose) took command late and went on to score a three-quarter length victory over race favorite TF First Pick. The winner, a 3-year-old filly bred in Florida by her owner J.L. Gladwell, was trained by Grover Wheeler Jr. and ridden to victory by Troy Crissup. She covered 440 yards in :21.440 and earned $81,123 for the victory. The filly broke her maiden at Canterbury Park in Minnesota last August and then made one start at Prairie Meadows in Iowa before moving on to Hialeah. The $75,000 Hialeah Invitational Championship, featuring the first-ever 12-horse Quarter Horse field at Hialeah Park, went to the much-traveled and highly accomplished Jess A Runner (Jess Louisiana Blue-Katiebug Driver) by a neck over defending champion Chi Ter. Trained by Kenny Laymon and ridden by Oscar Delgado for JK Running Horses LLC, Jess A Runner ran 440 yards in :21.354 and earned $45,000 for the win. The 6-year-old gelding was bred in Kansas by Paul Newmaster and now has five career stakes wins. As far as seasonal honors were concerned, jockey Alex Baldillez Jr. was a runaway winner of the jockey title. He registered 43 victories to 25 for

News runner-up and defending champion Oscar Delgado. Charlton Hunt was winless on closing day, but took top trainer honors, 25 to 20, over Ralph Muniz. Rancho Los Dos Potrillos LLC topped the owner standings with 14 wins, four better than Mary Passmore and Gene Cox. Skyline Lover was voted Horse of the Meet off the strength of four official wins in five starts this season.

Minor Maintains AllAround Status, Thigpen Earns Two Gold Buckles IFR42 In Review By: Tammie Hiatt - www.iprarodeo.com - The 42nd International Finals Rodeo stampeded the Oklahoma City State Fair Arena January 13-15. From IPRA convention meetings to Miss Rodeo USA fashion shows, the week was jam-packed with activity.

The race for the gold buckle in the bareback riding was between reigning world champion Josh Cragar of Columbia, TN and former world champion Shawn Minor of Camden, OH. Minor, who had the lead coming into the finals was able to hold Josh off until the fourth round. Shawn took the round win with a 84.5 point ride aboard Corona Sunrise from Rawhide Rodeo Company but Cragar’s 83.25 points on #462 Hollywood from Latting Rodeo Company was good enough for second in the round and the win in the average. Cragar edged Minor for the gold buckle by $53.68. Latting’s horse, #462 Hollywood was named as Bareback Horse of the Finals. It was a great year for Justin Thigpen of Waycross, GA. Thigpen had a healthy lead coming into the steer wrestling. He picked up checks in the first three rounds of competition but a “no-time” in the fourth round dropped him to 6th in the average. Shayde Etherton of Borden, IN was the Cinderella story in the steer wrestling. Etherton came into the finals in 9th position but finished with the average win and the number two man behind world champion Justin Thigpen. Manny Cunde of Madison, GA and Clint Summers of Lake City, FL earned their first team roping world titles. After a devastating “no-time” in the first round, the pair came back to place in the remaining three rounds and ending up fourth in the average. Jason Tucker of Mt. Ulla, NC and Caleb Anderson of Mocksville, NC earned the average win. It was Eddie Parlier’s time to shine at IFR42. The Johnson City, TN cowboy came into the finals in the lead for his first world title and walked out of the State Fair Arena with a gold buckle in tow. Parlier placed in the four rounds and topped the average with 317.5 points on four head. Freeburg, IL cowboy, Keith Brauer ‘s 82.75 point ride aboard Little Rooster from Williams & Long Rodeo Company in the fourth round was the highest marked ride of the finals. Williams & Long’s horse, #04 Short Cut earned Saddle Bronc of the Finals honors. In the tie-down roping, the spotlight was once again on Justin Thigpen. Despite being plagued by broken barriers, Justin still earned his third consecutive world title. T.J. Hobson of Henryville, IN claimed the average win with 38.9 seconds on four head. The cowgirls in the breakaway roping made IPRA history at IFR42. Jimme Beth Hefner of Bixby, OK earned the buckle in the first round with her time of 3.1. Kasi Prather of Ochelata, OK earned the win in both the second and third rounds with runs of 2.3 and 2.4 seconds. Jana Williams of Haskell, OK took the win in the fourth round with a 2.3 second run.

News Lacey Scully of Rockwood, ON, Canada, earned the average win with 24.2 on four head. Despite a quiet finals, Sheri Cahill of Strarthroy, ON, Canada, earned the first world championship awarded in this event.

tos for foal registration. Registry customers can now record and transmit markings descriptions for registration by entering text from their keypads or selecting from a list of commonly used phrases pertaining to markings.

Consistency was the name of the game in the cowgirls barrel racing. Stassi Pyne of Scotts, MI came into the finals with a very comfortable lead over the pack and was a reckoning force in the average race as well. Pyne placed in all four rounds, clinched the average win, ran the fastest time of the finals and shared the high money award of the finals with saddle bronc rider, Eddie Parlier.

Both apps are for iOS (iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad) and were developed by The Jockey Club Technology Services Inc.

The first round of the bull riding proved to be a shut out with the bulls walking away the victors. The second round found four cowboys up for the challenge with Joshua Baker of Birch Tree, MO rising to the top with 84.75 points on Ryleigh Jane from Rawhide Rodeo Company. In the third round the tables turned once again and rookie Jake Anderson of Shortsville, NY took the round buckle with a score of 84.75 points aboard the Bull of the Finals, #654 Risky Business of Wild Horse Rodeo Productions. The fourth round proved devastating to Luke McCoag who had strong hopes to claim his first world title but his lead had been chipped away as each round progressed. The Canadian cowboy slipped to third in the world standings. Shane Rickly of Lancaster, OH came into the finals in third position and quietly crept up the standings passing both Baker and McCoag to claim his first world title. Shawn Minor earned his seventh All-Around Cowboy title at the close of business at IFR42. Minor’s last six titles have been consecutive wins. Belle Forche, SD’s Trisha Smeenk was crowned the 2012 Miss Rodeo USA. The contestants underwent a grueling week of speaking, modeling, horsemanship and extensive testing. Smeenk will be the 49th Miss Rodeo USA to serve as the official ambassador of the International Pro Rodeo Association.

Jockey Club Rolls Out Mobile Applications Edited Press Release - The Jockey Club launched a new mobile application, The Jockey Club Naming App, and announced an update to The Jockey Club Identification App.

Both apps are targeted to Thoroughbred owners and are available free of charge in the iTunes store.

Hansen Tops Inital Kentucky Derby Graded Stakes Earnings List Edited Press Release - Hansen, last year’s champion two-Year-old male

and winner of the Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) at Churchill Downs last November, sits atop the official Kentucky Derby Graded Stakes Earnings list that will likely determine the participants for the 138th running of the $2 million Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) on May 5. The Kentucky Derby field has been limited to 20 starters since 1975, and graded stakes earnings accumulated in prestigious races on “The Road to the Kentucky Derby” have helped determine the field for the 1¼-mile classic since 1986. Hansen, owned by Dr. Kendall Hansen and Harvey Diamond’s Skychai Racing, heads the initial list with $1.16 million in earnings. He’s followed in the Top 20 by Union Rags ($830,000), Sabercat ($600,000), Wrote-IRE ($556,630), Creative Cause ($488,000), Liaison ($375,000), Dullahan ($375,000), Excaper ($240,736), Algorithms ($240,000), the filly On Fire Baby ($211,729), Drill ($210,000), Alpha ($180,000), Rousing Sermon ($164,000), Prospective ($155,452), I’ll Have Another ($151,000), Currency Swap ($150,000), Genten ($123,826), Battle Hardened ($120,000), Brother Francis ($120,000) and the filly Disposable Pleasure ($120,000). The initial Graded Stakes Earnings List includes all 3-year-olds – colts, geldings and fillies – who were made eligible to this year’s Triple Crown at $600 per horse when the early nomination period closed Jan. 21. The late period for nominations at $6,000 each will close Saturday, March 24.

Horses in Illinois are $1.2 Billion Industry

The Jockey Club Naming App enables Thoroughbred owners to submit name claims, name changes, and reserve names with the Jockey Club registry from a mobile device. A name generating feature is among the components of the app.

Horsemen’s Council of Illinois (HCI) has updated its fact sheet, “The Billion-Dollar Fact$,” verifying that the state’s equine industry continues to be an enormous economic engine, despite a slight drop in numbers of horses and horse owners due to the general slow down of all economic activity in the state and the nation.

“The Jockey Club receives more than 45,000 name requests each year, and we know that owners spend a lot of time coming up with just the right name,” said Rick Bailey, Jockey Club registrar. “The name generator provides potential horse names from a database of hundreds of thousands of previously used but now likely available names.

“It’s estimated that the Illinois horse industry produces goods and services valued at more than $1.2 billion,” according to Kevin Kline, Ph.D, professor of animal science at the University of Illinois and a director of the Horsemen’s Council of Illinois.

“In addition, we’ve included filters on the naming app that will make it much easier to find names that meet an owner’s respective criteria. For example, they can request the naming app to return only single-word names or use filters such as ‘contains’ or ‘starts with.’ ” The Jockey Club Identification App, which was unveiled in February 2011 as The Jockey Club Registry App, enables owners and breeders to use the camera within their iOS devices to take and submit identification pho-

Page 18

Nationally, the equine industry annually contributes $39 billion in direct economic impacts to the U.S. economy, according to Kline, who compiled the Fact Sheet, citing data from Horsemen’s Council of Illinois, the American Horse Council, Illinois Racing Board, Illinois Department of Agriculture, U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Horse Industry Alliance. The Billion-Dollar Fact$ sheet is online at www.HorsemensCouncil.org/ HCI/PDFs/BillionDollar.pdf

News The study notes that the value of the equine industry is nearly as great as petroleum and coal products manufacturing and apparel and textile manufacturing and exceeds the value of industries such as motion picture services and railroad transportation. Illinois is home to more than 178,000 horses, mules and donkeys valued at more than $300,000 million. There are nearly 64,000 horse owners in Illinois and more than 200,000 Illinoisans are involved in the industry as horse owners, service providers, employees and volunteers. Even more participate as spectators. Based on the horse population figures, more than 285,000 people in Illinois ride horses on a regular basis. Illinois is home to five racetracks with long seasons and more than 100 days of County Fair and State Fair racing for Standardbreds, Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses. Horses rank as the fourth largest source of personal consumption for recreation in the United States. Data shows that 70% of horses in Illinois are used for recreation and showing. More than 50% of the direct expenditures bolstering the Illinois economy come from “hobby” horses ridden for enjoyment and show. Horses are a major segment of American agriculture. Although most horse owners don’t market milk, meat or hides, horses are bred, raised, bought and sold like any other agricultural livestock. Stallion stud services also are traded, bought and sold as a recognized agricultural commodity. Horses in Illinois annually consume 500,000 tons of hay and grain worth nearly $100 million each year.

Horses also mean entertainment. Spectators attend a wide variety of equine sporting events in Illinois, including racing, showing (rated, breed, open and 4-H), gymkhana (games, speed-and-action, jackpots); community celebration parades, trail riding; hayrides; draft horse and pony pulls; rodeo (professional, collegiate, high school); eventing (dressage, crosscountry, stadium jumping); polo; driving; and the annual Illinois Horse Fair in Springfield, IL, which this year will be March 2-4 and expected to attract more than 10,000 horse owners. More than 2.6 million spectators attend horse racing events in Illinois annually. Horse events generate local economic development from expenditures for lodging meals, fuel, souvenirs and other purchases by event participants. With more than 3,200 young people in Illinois involved in 4-H horse and pony projects, horses play an important role in the personal development of young and old alike. Management and proper care of horses teach responsibility and appreciation for humane care of living things. Horse competitions develop initiative, confidence, self- esteem and a healthy competitive spirit — gracious winners and good losers. Defying economic analysis, horses are an enduring link to the simpler times gone by. The attraction between man and horse has withstood millions of years and economic changes, which have destroyed industries less a part of human nature. Newborn foals frolicking in a spring pasture, horse-drawn carriages carrying newlyweds down a city street, draft horses plowing an Amish field and the look on a child’s face as she trots along on her first pony are priceless sights and will endure as long as there are horses and people. Public horse trails help to preserve natural areas which otherwise may be developed for commercial purposes.

he IBRA Murfreesboro Futurity & Preferred Shows were held in Murfreesboro, TN in January. Nearly 750 entries charged through the gates of the Tennessee Miller Coliseum with pounding hoofs through freshly turned ground in the hopes of scoring a division win. They came to conquer despite the wintery nightime temperatures, trorrential rains, and even tornado warnings. Members came from as far away as upstate New York to show true grit and determination in true cowgirl or cowboy style.

Friday January 20th: $2,000 Open 4-D

Troy Crumrine and Deuce rolled the dice to rule the arena with an awesome 15.197 1D win time on Friday night. Mr. Crumrine led the entire weekend as the fastest run time for any horse and rider pounding the arena dirt. Mary Freels and equine partner, Smithmills, ran an impressive first place win in the 2D with a 15.701. The 3D first place check was won by Brandon Cullins on Ricky Bobby with a run time of 16.228. And with the moonlight high in

the sky outside, Keith Temple took the 4D money inside with a 17.225 run on French Moon Gal. A special thank you goes out to all our Sponsors for their support of the International Barrel Racing Association (IBRA) and assistance in advancing the sport of barrel racing. The IBRA also thanks all the members for coming out and supporting this show during the ‘brrr’ month of January with temperatures that dropped down to as low as 36 degrees at night.

Saturday January 21th: Futurity 3-D (1st Go):

Ducky Keller soared to set the bar with a 15.77 1D finish on Jet-O Red. Cody Bryant rose to a comforable 2D finish with a 16.3 flat run time on Famous Red Romance. Jason Thomas showed what tough stuff he and Diana Tuff are as a team, landing a first place finish in the 3D with a 16.841 run time.

$10,000 Guaranteed 4-D

Mendy Williams defined the winning run with Sweet Definition as they set the time to beat in the Guaranteed $10K race with a 15.283 run time in the 1D. Mandy Willis displayed a chillin’ 2D payday display on HF Imacool Frosty Mug with their 15.827 run. Kiley Stinson jetted around the barrels with Sheza Southern Jet to airlift the 3D win with a run time of 16.296. Heather Johnson and Chargin On Credit took charge of snagging the 4D win with a 17.324 time.

Youth 3-D:

Carly Taylor and NonStop Jabolina pulled out all stops to take the 1D finish with their run time of 15.716. Kayla Baier played the game well with Cricket to win the 2D with their 16.735. Lilli Hayes and her beautiful Bo claimed the 3D with an 18.304 winning run time.

Masters 3-D:

Chris Coffey romanced his barrel turns with Streaking Romance to a hot Masters 1D finish of 15.295 seconds. This was the pairs first major IBRA class win as the reigning IBRA National Finals Champions. Tami Settlemire turned up the fire behind him to land a 16.299 finsh in the 2D on Bass Burner. Karen Reeves dashed into a first place 3D finish on her wild, but ready mare, Terrys Dash with a 17.512.

Sunday January 22th: Futurity 3-D (2nd go):

Bubby Skimehorn didn’t stand still as he whisked away with Make My Moonshine to capture the 1D finish with a 15.653. Bobby Stivers and My Cuzis Famous worked the cans with a 16.156 to bring on a 2D win. Ducky Keller and Blackberry Smoke had a smokin’ 3D win with their 16.717.

Futurity Average:

Troy Crumrine crystalized what consistency means with a triumphant 1D Futurity average win on Costly Crystal with a 31.750 average between the 1st and 2nd Futurity Go rounds. It was costly to everyone that followed in their hoof prints. Ducky Keller smoked the 2D with a 33.117 average on Blackberry Smoke. Bobby Stivers and Famous Shawnee Bug flew away with the 3D win from a 33.871 average from their run times.

Getting to know Troy Crumine:

Troy Crumrine is no newcomer to world of barrel racing. Today - he’s a natural horseman who worked long and hard starting as a youth to become the best of the best. Folks say he can get on a horse and within minutes, tell you everything going on with that horse. He’s just one of those folks who everyone can appreciate and notice that he has ‘horse DNA’. From a little observation, one realizes he’s a down-to-earth kind of family man who leans towards speed. If he wasn’t a million dollar futurity trainer, maybe he’d been a racecar driver. (continued)

Overall Earnings – Additional Interesting Facts:

(continued) Any IBRA member attending the Murfreesboro show would have found Mr. Crumrine to be courteous, professional, and easy going. Although his home state is Ohio, and he travels all across the country, down time finds him with family and friends and kicked back in places like Unadilla, GA for chill time while on the road. If there’s one thing Mr. Crumrine appreciates besides his family, a consistent horse, and a good arena; it’s positive people who shoot from the hip with straight talk and honesty. Congratulations to Troy Crumrine once again.

and take home the 2D win. Grant Patterson and Rennes Tigerette pounded the ground to the 3D finishline with a 16.477. In the end, Heather Phillips flew in on Special Dashing Jet to claim a hot fueled 4D finish with a 17.597.

Erika Whitely flamed to a fiery finish with Paris Firewater to win the 1D Sunday Open with a 15.473. Marne Loosemort and Perks In the House acted like they were taking down the house to bring on a 16.036

Ducky Keller dominated the three-day show with an impressive take-home total of $4322 resulting from six futurity and two Open win hits. Once again Ducky proves that persistance with a little bit of good fortune, not necessarily placement, makes the difference to the bank. Marne Loosemort took home the most earnings of $1318 from the Open races, courtesy of her two equine partners, Perks In the House and Easy Down Honor. Chris Coffey rode the highest single equine earner, Streaking Romance, of the Preferred show to a total of $1427 between two Open and one Master runs. Chris also was the highest single win earner in the Masters taking home $281. However, Tami Settlemire was a double hitter right on Chris’ heels bringing home winningsof $237 with Bass Burner and Chicks On High. Katelynn Eike and her equine partner, Barron of Stars, shined as the rising star of youth earners with an overall $692 between Youth and Open races.

IBRA UPDATES

Dear Member, It is an exciting time here at the IBRA and I am pleased to write to you for the first time as a whole acting as your IBRA president. I am sure to most of you this is old news but I did want to formally announce this change that took place in September of this past year. I would personally like to thank Karen Mostoller, for her trust, teaching, encouragement and her blessing. I hope that each of you will let Karen know how much we appreciate what she has done for us by starting what I feel is the best barrel racing association around. Thank you Karen for all your years of service! Preferred Shows This is a prime opportunity for us to make improvements, implement new ideas and rekindle excitement throughout our association and the barrel racing world all over. One way to do this is by providing a higher variety of quality shows in more areas. We have also been listening to your concerns and are revamping show bills, where possible, to reflect them. Below is more information on upcoming preferred shows! IBRA Futurity and Preferred Show @ Circle G Arena (Lewisburg, OH) March 29th-April 1st, 2012 This is a great annual event that is attended by futurity and open riders from all over. Our Thanksgiving show in November sold out all stalls and RV spots so be sure to get you reservation payments in early. The flier for the show is attached. We hope to see you there! IBRA Match Race @ C BAR C Expo Center (Cloverdale, IN) May 11th-13 & Nov. 9th-11th, 2012 For IN and its surrounding states we have the reopening of a fantastic facility in Cloverdale, IN. Cindy and Carl Harlan have provided the opportunity to host two preferred shows in C Bar C Expo Center formally Crossroads. For those of you who have not been to C Bar C, this is a phenomenal facility with 500 stalls, concessions, vendor space, entry office, makeup arena and show arena all under one roof. The preferred shows here will be on the week ends of May 11th-13th and November 9th-11th. After last year’s cancellation of the IBRA Match Race, due to the EHV-1 scare, the event will return to its original home of Cloverdale, IN in May. The show bill for the Match Race is attached. You asked for it you got it… LOWER OFFICE FEES AND NO LATE FEES for classes outside of the Match Race. Start getting your teams together for this very fun event. The Match Race is also used to raise money for each states awards program! Each state will have the opportunity to set up a silent auction table and come up with other fund raisers with the proceeds going towards their own states awards fund. Don’t wait until the last minute go ahead and be speaking with your directors and reps to donate silent auction items or give ideas for fund raising! IBRA Futurity and Preferred Show @ TN Miller Coliseum (Murfreesboro, TN) January 20th-22nd , 2012 results. Congratulations to Troy Crumrine and Costly Crystal on wining the IBRA Futurity and Preferred Show. The pair took home $2,245 in futurity winnings and an additional $450 for a rollover to Saturdays Open accumulating a total of $2695 over the weekend. Troy also marked up a win on Friday of $585 aboard Duece. For full details of class winners and a more detailed analysis of the show see the March Issue of The Fast Horse Resource. Hello, all: We have been off to a very slow start this year and again, I apologize. I am working with limited funds to ensure those from the 2010-2011 year receive their awards and that the awards are worthy. Please keep checking as we post new shows and try to get up and running full-speed again. If you know of any arenas interested in hosting a show or having us come and put on a show please let me know or call the State Representative. Though we may have set backs in life, it is important to put God first and keep our eyes turned upward to know where He will lead and He will bless us in every way! Let’s get riding! Juanita

Well my ole grand dad told me it thaws a little each day in February. I don’t know about you but I am certainly ready for summer and tank tops. Wanted to remind everyone about the tack sale and swap meet coming up on February 25th @ Portland fairgrounds. Swap meet is from 9a-4p, auction starts @ 5 p. Consignments are welcome and there are still a few booths available. Please contact our show committee director Chad Bricker @ 260-703-0839 for more information. is a flyer above this newsletter so give it a quick look for the entire scoop on this upcoming fundraiser. Proceeds go towards Indiana’s state show & any left over money will end up in the yearend awards so plan on attending. ATTENTION EVERYONE: A GREAT MEMBER: Jenny Creech is in charge of the kitchen @ the swap and tack sale. She needs your help with some donated items and workers for the kitchen so please contact her @ jenlitton22@hotmail.com. Look above for the attached kitchen signup sheet and come have some fun and support our club. Workers will qualify for a free stall so sign up now! Another exciting fund raiser is the match race competition involving the north vs. the south. This will run in conjunction with the March 10th Cloverdale open barrel race. Kelly Bricker says the dividing line is state road 70 if you’re wondering what team to be on. Teams are forming quickly and the stakes are high. The losing side has to barbecue @ the IBRA state show in August. And did you know that 50% of the entry money goes to fund this year’s state show. The other 50% goes back in the pot for payout. Kelly wants to remind everyone of the cost: $20 per person entry fee x 5 riders =$100 per team. If you want to be on a team you can sign up at the show to join. So come and have fun and help support the Indiana state show. And last but not least our Indiana IBRA charity. Another GREAT MEMBER: Beth Whitaker-Williamson is in charge and has chosen the web site at the Susan G Komen foundation to support Breast cancer. You may see 50/50 tickets being sold @ the shows on Saturdays, please buy a ticket to help fund our charity. Or you can go directly to the web site to make a donation and watch the progress of the Indiana IBRA donations. When I went to the team page by putting in IBRA it was a little confusing for me but then I am not great with a computer so you might be able to figure it out better than I could. Either way you access the site it will be fun to watch our clubs progress in raising money to help our family and friends that have been affected by breast cancer. Well until next month. Linda

Hello Everyone,

What an exciting time to be a KY IBRA member. For the first time ever the IBRA National Finals will be held in Louisville, KY at our very own Kentucky Exposition Center, in Freedom Hall. If you are not yet a member, it is not too late to join and get qualified; all you need is one hundred points to qualify for the finals. Please keep in mind though that we are now over half way through the season. We need sponsors in order to have the kind of State Finals we had last year and every little bit helps. Please take note that we have a raffle for Duckin Fire, contact Shane Cline for details and for raffle tickets. I have been riding a couple months now at the house and am finally starting to get back out and do some showing so I hope to see you soon!

MICHIGAN

Hi everyone! Well winter is about over and things are starting to pick up. We are in the mits of booking shows for your 2012 season. THIS YEAR WILL BE IBRA OF MICHIGAN’S 10TH YEAR RUNNING. Way to go!!! On that note, last year was a tuff year for a lot of people. This means that this coming season, we need you as members to step up and help us out. WE NEED SPONSORS. Please lend a hand. Also, our youth class has gotten very small and is no longer supporting its self. We are going to have to make the decision to drop to the top 5 in each divison for year-eind awards. I would also like to talk about the show booket we put out every year. This book, after mailing, cost us about $600.00. Last year we had about 15 people that sent in a $25.00 ad for that book. There were a few more ads in there, but they were ads the Michigan IBRA covered for long time sponsors. This year we will mail out showbills that I myself will print to save us as a group money. I will try and send them all at once and put them in order. But remember I’m only human. HOPEFULLY, this will save us a little money. YOU AS MEMBERS NEED TO UNDERSTAND that it takes a lot of money to pay for the wonderful awards that are given out at the end of each season. If we have to start cutting corners, the awards will be smaller. This is NOT a one person job. I NEED HELP. I know we are all very busy with our own lives in general, but this stuff has to be done and money does not grow on trees. Last year there were only a few people that even sold raffle tickets. Needless to say, it just paid for itself. I’m sorry if this seems like I’m complaining. I’m not. It’s you as members that want to run for $$$ and nice awards, so you as members need to help get the sponsors and shows too help pay for our awards. Things are not getten cheaper, in fact it’s going the other way. So please let’s try and make OUR 10TH YEAR A GREAT ONE !!

The season is off to a great start. I’d like to encourage people to spread the word to everyone and lets try to increase our membership. OHIO

We are certainly off to a great start for the New Year. I am pleased to announce PURINA as our STATE FINALS TITLE SPONSOR! Purina will be offering the Ohio Members quarterly coupons. Make sure you all take advantage of this gracious offering, and do business with those that support us. We need to all take time throughout the year & thank those that are supporting our association, even a quick note will let them know our appreciation. Just a reminder to everyone about our SPONSORSHIP DRIVE. Earn a free entry, stall, or award thru increasing sponsorships. $100 in Sponsors will qualify you to run in the Directors/ Sponsor Race at Nationals. This does not have to be one big sponsor, but can be earned through multiple smaller donations & sponsorships. This year we will be using several fundraisers to help kick some $ into our Awards Fund. I am working with a few different Screen Printing Businesses trying to complete our 2012 IBRA Ohio Sponsorship T-Shirts. Thus far, I have found an Alternative Style Fitted T in both Ladies & Men’s Sizing. Ladies, if you do not like the fitted sizing, the mens are very comparable. ANY SPONSOR donating over $25.00 with us by mid February will be included on the back of the T-Shirts. So far (some have not been paid yet to confirm, but just to give you an idea.....) the following Sponsors will be included; PURINA, cattlehandling.net, www.jvpsignaturehorsesandtack.com, Brandi Foster Barrel Racing Productions, Krazy K Signs, Bodey Insurance - Mark Bodey, Town & Country Co-op, Doug Davidson Trucking, and Dave Treharne Training Center. These T’s are a great place for Veterinarians, Farriers, Trainers, Breeders, and about any other business to advertise for as low as $25.00! Spread the word, and please get your Sponsors in to assure they are able to take advantage of this! I am hoping to have these shirts ready to sell by the March Circle G Show. Also, I have reserved WB Ranch May 25, 26, & 27 for our Fundraiser Show. Please plan on bringing a dozen of your favorite snacks for our “Fundraiser Snack Table”. We will have this set-up from Friday night thru Sunday, or until we sell-out. The T-Shirts will also be For Sale. This weekend will be a great time to have a Silent Auction. So grab some items, and let’s add to our Awards Fund thru a Silent Auction. The more active and participating members we have, the smoother this show will run. Please let me know what class you will be available to set barrels for. If everyone lends a hand, we will not have to hire anyone, and in return, obviously increase our profits. If any of you are handy in the entry booth, and planning on attending, please give me a call. I’d appreciate your help! Last on the “Fundraising Thoughts”, a few of us have agreed to selling Malleys Chocolate Bars. I have no problem with picking these up, & having them at the Shows, all I ask is that they are prepaid. Let me know how many boxes you would like to try & sell. (Email, Facebook, or Call) Please share your thoughts on Awards. I love to hear everyone’s ideas. Weaver Leather is setting us up with 40 very nice “surprise somethings” for the Open Top Ten - so excited!!! Saturday, March 10th at Windy Knoll Farms in Sullivan, Oh we are setting up an IBRA Ohio Booth at the Town & Country Co-ops Equine Excellence. This is an Annual Event, and this year they are having Teresa Quay as the Clinician. I thought this would be a great opportunity to spread the word about our association, and what we have to offer. The banquet is a little over a week away! Some awards have started to arrive! I have never had so many issues getting awards as this year, I will have to share the events with everyone at the banquet. If you haven’t gotten your reservations in yet, please contact Gay ASAP. Please don’t forget to bring a Silent Auction item. This is a great way to get the year started with funds for our Year-end awards! Also please remember to show our support for those dealing with Cancer by wearing something pink. Those that do will have their name put in a drawing! Does anyone have a fundraiser idea? Please get in touch with myself, Gay, or Brenda. The more money in our account at the end of the year will mean better awards! It’s also not too early to be asking for sponsorships! Most places are given so much money so the sooner you ask them the better. If you get at least $100 in sponsorships you can run in the Sponsorship/Director’s Race at Nationals. Speaking of Nationals hopefully you all seen we are headed to Louisville, KY. Keep checking back for new show approvals & don’t forget to check out our PA IBRA Facebook page!

Please try to support our first fundraiser of the year! We will be holding a Tack Swap on April 7th at Sawhorse Arena (Chip & Lisa Nicholson’s) From 10 am - 4 PM. To serve a spot please contact Michele or Lisa. Donna & Shana have volunteered to run the concession stand for the event. Instead of asking for food donations we are taking money donations to buy items that we will need. We will be looking for some bake goods too!!! I will collect money at the upcoming shows or you can mail me a check. Larry “Bubba” Harris will also be doing 30 minute “tune-up” sessions, for your horses. He is a great horse Chiropractor. You will need to schedule an appointment.

working on getting TN Split on the website like the other split states. I talked with Shane and we hope to have this done in the next few weeks. Also please remember to get your show results into the office within 14 days after your show. This only helps keep with points up to date. Please check the IBRA website for show approvals. Producers also make sure your show is posted. The more shows we have the more money we raise the nicer the awards are at the end of the year. I need everyone’s assistance in fundraising and sponsorships.

If you want to run in the Sponsorship/Director’s class at Nationals just must turn in at least $100 in sponsorships!

RIP - “Puddles”

This past month we had a very sad occurance here at the ranch. I have never witnessed my people become so worried and so upset so quickly. I definitely have a deeper respect and a different perspective of them after being present during such a traumatic time and watching their reactions. You see, one of “the girls” from outside - the one named Puddles (my hunting buddy) - lost her life this past month. From what I could gather, she somehow managed to get into something that poisoned her. That’s what our vet seemed to think. The series of events that morning included a frantic trip to the vet with Puddles (the people not yet knowing what was wrong) followed by a frantic trip back home to check on all of us other dogs once they realized that toxins were involved. Puddles’ sister, Freckles, was the only one that acted like she may have ate whatever it was that had affected Puddles, so Freckles got rushed to the vet next. Then we all waited. We didn’t know what was going on, but we knew it was serious. It wasn’t long until the very sad people returned with Puddles - she was already gone - but Freckles had to stay with the vet to so they could watch her and treat her if need be. The entire time I was watching, I

could tell that my people were so sad over the loss of one of the girls, and so worried over what may be the fate of her sister. Later that afternoon (after I heard the lady make a few calls to the vet checking on Freckles) we all went for a ride to pick her up. Good news the vet said she was going to be fine. They didn’t think she was exposed to as much, if any, of whatever had taken her sister. We were all relieved. The saddest part of the entire day was when the big people had to tell the little people (they call them kids) about what had transpired that day. They all wept and hugged each other. The little girl was especially sad. It was a very emotional moment, even for a tough Jack Russsel like me. I may have even had a tear in my eye. I realized that my people really do look at us as part of their family. It only enforced my notion when they promoted Freckles to a house dog. She had lost her littermate (after four years of always being together) and they thought it would help the little girl get over the loss. I’ll not comment on that action at this time, due to the circumstances I’ll suck it up and share my inside time. Anyway, sorry to be such a downer this month.....but I just wanted to say that I am very happy to be part of a family that values the animals that they have in their lives. It was such a sad time to lose part of our family, but we do know that while she was here she lived a great life. She was never hungry and she was always given plenty of love and attention. Use this as a reminder to appreciate your loved ones - four legged as well as two legged. Give them a little praise and a little love today. You never know how long you will have them in your lives. Until next month.... Thank for the memories, Puddles.......

Breeding the Foal Heat Mare

Article By Dr. Steve Fisch, DVM

E

veryone in the racing and showing industries want that early foal. The earlier the foal is born the bigger the advantage he has over his competitors in age and growth. In his two year old year, any advantage can be significant. One way to get an earlier foal is to get your mare in foal on “foal heat”. Foal heat is that first heat cycle after the foal is born. Ovulation on foal heat normally happens between a very early ovulation at 7 days and a late ovulation at 15 days post foaling. The majority of the ovulations will be between 10 to 13 days post foaling. If you are going to breed on foal heat with shipped semen then also make sure that the stallion has semen that ships well. Not all stallions’ semen undergoes the shipping process well. Just like mares they all have their different degrees of fertility.

Getting her in foal on foal heat starts way before the foal is born. It begins with proper nutrition at the beginning of gestation and throughout her pregnancy. The mare should be physically in good shape and have a little extra weight on her. She doesn’t need to be too fat but she needs to have a little extra weight so that her body thinks that all is well in the world. Her hair coat should reflect her degree of health. Even in winter a healthy mare will have a hair coat that has a healthy glow to it. If the person in charge of feeding the mare is not very versed in equine nutrition then it will pay to have a consult with someone that is knowledgeable in equine nutrition. This person should know not just about protein levels but also about the interrelationship that the different micro and macro minerals have with each other. They should know about omega 3 fatty acids and the different vitamins and how they support pregnancy and uterine health. There is a lot more to know about equine nutrition than feeding a certain percent protein and dumping some vitamins in the bucket. Since nutrition is a very involved subject, we will hit on the details in a future article. The second detail in increasing the chances of getting the mare in foal on foal heat is to be there when the foal is born. This assures that the birthing process goes as well as it can. A faster easier birth means less wear and tear on the mare and her uterus. It can mean less bruising and inflammation in the reproductive tract which means the mare’s uterus will involute and get back to normal shape and size faster. If someone is there when the foal is born, the mare can be given oxytocin to speed up the process of passing the placenta. The placenta should be passed within 4 hours post foaling. At our hospital we normally stay with the mare and foal until the foal has nursed and the mare has passed her placenta. If she hasn’t passed it in four hours, we put her on broad spectrum antibiotics and we start flushing her uterus with large volumes (5 liters) of sterile lactated ringers solution. Normally with aggressive flushing and oxytocin treatment the placenta will pass fairly soon. If the mare does not pass her placenta within a normal period of time, we do not breed on foal heat. We may short cycle her six days post foal heat and breed her on that heat. If everything goes correctly with the foaling we give the mare oxytocin two or three times per day for the next 3 days. This helps insure that all the fluid and blood is pushed out of her uterus. We start flushing her on day two or three post foaling and flush her with 5 liters of sterile LRS. The mare’s vulva is prepped with chlorhexidene scrub so that it wipes clean when we swab it cotton. Everything that goes in the uterus is sterile. We will flush her on day two or three and again on day five or six depending on what the first flush looked like. If she is clean on the second flush then that will be the last flush. If she is not clean with all the blood and other discharge gone then we will flush her again on about day eight. Normally they will be clean on that flush.

Page 44

Another important part of the process is to ultrasound her uterus on about day eight to make sure there is not fluid in her uterus. This is a very important step both pre insemination and post insemination. If the mare doesn’t ovulate before day ten and her uterus is flushing clean and she has not fluid retention in her uterus then we inseminate her when the ultrasound and palpation say she is ready to be bred. If she is going to ovulate before day ten then we skip the foal heat because the chances are much slimmer that she will get in foal without her uterus having at least ten days to rejuvenate itself. We try to inseminate her only once because the semen is foreign and it serves as a source of inflammation for her uterus. We start giving her oxytocin six hours post insemination to move any inflammatory fluid that was caused by the insemination out of her uterus. We give .5 ml IV twice per day. One half ml gives the uterus a more evenly spaced uterine contraction rhythmic effect versus giving her a larger dose. The smaller dose has also been shown to keep the rhythmic uterine contractions going longer than a larger dose. When we check her with the ultrasound to make sure she has ovulated, we check her uterus for fluid. If no fluid is there we discontinue the oxytocin. If fluid remains in her uterus we continue to the oxytocin until it clears. If a mare has a lot of fluid we may flush her uterus one more time with five liters of LRS. Once she has ovulated, hopefully all the fluid is out of her uterus and her uterus is back to it is normal size. At that point if she has a history of needing to be on Regumate to hold a pregnancy then we start her on Regumate on about day eight post ovulation and we check her for pregnancy on day fifteen or sixteen post ovulation. If all the above steps are taken then the chances of a foal heat pregnancy are good and you have effectively backed up your mare’s due date for the next year by about three weeks. If you have a late foaling mare and don’t want to skip a year or embryo transfer her to move her due date back then working on getting her in foal on her foal heat can get her back to an early foaling date by three weeks each time the process is successful.

The Annual 1st Ohio Year End Awards Banquet was a great time! The weather cooperated with warmer dryer temps allowing members make the drive to the Kings Island Resort in Kings Mills, Ohio. Cowboys & Cowgirls came from as far away as Okeana in Ohio, Reelsville in Indiana to Lawrenceburg, Kentucky. We welcomed over 60 members who spent the evening together sharing tales about experiences from last year and plans for the new season. After a delicious dinner, it was truly proud moments as member names were called to pick up their awards for 2011. 1st Ohio recognizes every participating member from the year with a special award. There were even special awards for those Cowboys and Cowgirls that forgot to load their pistols “The Empty Chamber Gang” and of course a few new inductees into the “Hole in the Ground Gang”! (doubt if that club needs an explanation)! Our Silent Auction was filled with some of the best items ever, many of our members donate items for this annual club fund raiser. Its fun to race the clock and fellow competitors for the best bargains of the evening.

CMSA News Indiana Rough Riders

Howdy All! Welcome to this month’s issue of Fast Horse Resource Magazine. Even though the 2012 shooting season has begun, we still had a few loose ends to tie up for the 2011 season, the IRR awards banquet. The banquet this year was held at the Elks Club in Rushville, IN with 30 members and guests attending. The Elk’s prepared a wonderful dinner consisting of fried chicken, roast beef, cheesy potatoes, green beans, salad, and some tasty deserts. During the evening for entertainment we had several different things going on. One was a DVD with members of the Indiana Rough Riders struttin’ their stuff put to music by Kathy McDonald. Ann Woulms provided some fun times by highlighting some of the member’s more memorable moments of 2011.

We finished up the evening with door prizes (special thanks to the Miller family for their generous donations for the door prizes) and everyone visiting and enjoying the company of good friends. Can’t wait to do it again next year! Be sure to come see us at Henry County’s “Tack & Swap” at the Henry County Saddle Club in New Castle, IN on March 31st and stop by the IRR booth. We will have information about IRR and CMSA. Members will also be available to answer questions. We will also be at the Hoosier Horse Fair along with the Indiana Mounted Regulators April 13-15 located at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. We would like to invite you to come and watch our shooting demos, attend our lectures and visit our booth. For more information and our schedule for the Hoosier Horse Fair, go to www. indianahorsecouncil. com. That’s it month.

Then there was the “box game”, imagine 5 to 6 boxes, one wrapped inside the other, with prizes in each box. With everyone surrounding the table, the first person starts unwrapping the box, a dice is passed from one person to the next with everyone taking their turn to roll. When someone rolls a “six”, the box is passed off to that person giving them a turn to unwrap the prize box as fast as they can. This continues until all the prizes are revealed. With dice rolling, wrapping paper flying through the air and everyone trying to get their turn, there were prizes for all as the stack of boxes were passed from one person to the next. This year the awards were simple but appreciated by all. Tractor Supply gift certificates were given to members with the dollar amount of the gift card based on the number of IRR shoots each member participated in.

Road to the SEBRA Finals a great rodeo association to be a member of…..they were so awesome at the finals and we, the barrel racers, could not have ask to be treated any better! Thank you. The arena was good and they let those of us that wanted to ride in the arena early in the morning. The rodeo went pretty smooth and everyone had a nice warm up arena to ride in…but the cool thing was, it was on the internet to watch! Thanks to Brent Puhl! We appreciated that for the families and friends back home that couldn’t come to watch.

The Finalists:

Preparing: It’s now about two weeks until the SEBRA (Southern Extreme Bull Riding Association) finals and I have lots of things to do to prepare. I qualified in the top 20 in the barrel racing and will get to compete during their annual finals in Murfreesboro, Tennessee at the end of January. I am taking the family, so I’ll be getting hotel reservervations and beginning a list of things to take. But, the most important thing I’ll be doing to prepare is keeping myself and my horse, Classy, in shape. Of course its January and its cold…we live in Indiana, so you never know what the weather will be. It may be 20 degrees or 48 degrees. Either way, I still ride my horse.

All the girls that made it were really great and they all deserved to be there. Those girls are: Teresa Quay, Esther Miller, Mersates Sims, Darlene Miller, Nicole Love, Sabrina Frye, Tammy Sutton, Sissy Samms, Jessica Cantrell, Vandy Walden, Mandy Lockard, Cherie Etchebarne, Megan Oberdier, Angela Carnes, Julie Stovall, Kendra Gilbreath, Ashlee Owens, Alicia Pottmeyer, Charley Fletcher and Katy Mae Robertson. It was so nice to meet all the girls there that I had never met before. They were all nice and we had a great time.

My Partner:

I have been very blessed to have such a nice horse to qualify me for the SEBRA finals throughout this past year. Her name is Classy Poco Tivio (aka “Classy”) and she is a 19 year old American Quarter Horse. We have became a great team over the past few years and I really enjoy competing on her. If it weren’t for some really good friends watching out for me, I wouldn’t have her today. Those friends know who they are. (Thank you!)

Support System: As you all know I work in a big western store in Anderson, Indiana called Cowpokes. It’s a great place to work when you’re a cowgirl. Of course, I am always up to date on the latest fashions and styles because of my job. They keep me very busy through the week, but are very flexible with my hours which gives me the chance to travel down the road to rodeos. Thank you for all you do, Lynnette and Jeff Boone, you have been great! I don’t think I could have made it without the support of my friends and family. They have been so great to me and have supported me with this great dream of mine. Steve (my husband) and Kolton (my son) have been the biggest support. They are awesome! I have to say, Sherry Sunden, if it wasn’t for you hauling me down the road this would have not have happened for me! (I decided to sell my truck at the wrong time!) My other supporters are my friends that have been so wonderful to me and just being there for me. I want to give a thanks to the White family….. Keith & Tami and the girls. You all have been such an inspiration to me and have done so much for me….Thank you! I love you all and I appreciate you and your friendship!

The Experience: Going to the finals was such a huge accomplishment for me and I was so proud to be there. The SEBRA Association is such Page 52

Sponsors:

I want to thank all my sponsors this year because they made it a great year for me! Circle Y saddle company provided me with the best saddle this year. Cowgirl Tuff did a great job of dressing me in the best clothes I have ever worn. Also thanks to Brook Palmer - State Farm Insurance of Greenfield IN, Gray Auto of Greenfield IN and last but not least…Cowpokes Work and Western!

Inspired: The SEBRA finals was a great experience and I definitely want to try my best to make it again next year. The journey to make your dreams come true is just hard work…always do your best and never forget God. He will always be there for you no matter what and always pray to him for goodness. For me personally….I always, always pray before I run…..because when you are out in the arena running….it’s not just you and your horse…it’s God watching over you to make sure you stay safe. Everyone have a fantastic year and don’t forget to stop by Cowpokes to find all your tack and western trends! We have some exciting new stuff coming in so stop and check it out!! Kendra Gilbreath grew up showing cattle and sheep and eventually made her way into the rodeo arena as a barrel racer. She is married to her husband, Steve, and they have one son, Kolton. Kendra has worked in the Western Retail Business for most of her adult life and enjoys keeping with the hottest styles in western wear. She is currently a Manager and a Buyer for Cowpokes Work and Western Store in Anderson, IN and helps in keeping the hottest trends and styles in clothing, boots and western wear on the store showroom floor.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day ! This weather is amazing!!! Hope I don’t speak to soon. We were headed out to a show a couple weeks ago and couldn’t get the horses out of the barn. (so much ice) But for February I am not complaining. Writing this interview is probably the most complicated interview I have done. The main reason being that words cannot describe what an AWESOME HORSE he was.

Smile, Critter! (Love the shirt!!)

Here’s a few hints: “Lets Go Girls”, “We have a new leader,” or “That was amazing!” I am sure by now you have guessed! Enjoy the story and the pictures of Hot Shot with the Steinhoff girls throughout the next few pages.

Remembering the One & Only

Nate Shilabar -“Hot Shot” A Little History Hot Shot was purchased by Peyton Raney’s father, Jack, from a sale barn and he would have been going on the “killer” truck. Peyton Raney let Janet Stover ride Hot Shot at the NFR in Dec. 2001. December of 2000 was a life changing event for Tanya. Peyton Raney called the Steinhoff’s and offered Tanya to ride Hot Shot at the BFA World Show Youth race and the rest is History...(she did win it!) She won the first go and had the fastest time of everybody - including the futurity, derby, youth and teen. Tanya received Hot Shot as a Christmas present in 2001 from her parents. (Garry and Debbie.) How many world championships did Tanya win on Hot Shot? Six world titles and 6 horse trailers. (She won 8 trailers) The Steinhoff’s showed every weekend and they had been in 26 states showing horses by the time Tanya was 12.

Registered Name - Nate Shilabar (Barn name - “Hot Shot”) How tall: 14’2, Weight: 1000 lbs.

Page 54

Page 55

TEEN CORRAL w/Clint Van he brought me I owe everything to him. Tyrney won how many world titles and etc? She won Seven World titles on him. Tyrney’s best memory of Hot Shot? It would be my First World title on him in October of 2004 and my first runs on him the weekend after my sister gave him to me.

we can’t even start to count them. There are stacks in rooms in my house that are seven deep. There is a Bryer horse of the World Famous “Hot Shot”. It came out in 2007. We took him to Breyer Fest in Lexington Kentucky. That was quite an adventure. (See noted pictures.)

When did Tyrney quit riding Hot Shot? It was after the Mega of 2010 Tanya turned Hot Shot over to Tyrney on August 31, 2004 after he had been injured for 16 months and told that he would never run again. Tanya’s best memory of Hot Shot? Winning the Mega in 2002 by 1 / 1000th. Because of him and the oppportunities

Taylor’s win’s on Hot Shot? The very first time she ran him she split 2nd and 3rd on him. She had been taking him to local shows around the house and placing in the 1-D on him. How many saddles has Hot Shot won? This sounds really bad, but so numerous

“Hot Shot” and “Another Shot” I turned the dogs out he was laying funny, usually I could yell at him and he will nicker at me or jump up. He just laid there. It was probably one of the saddest days of the year for us. He passed at the age of 24 in his sleep on December 28, 2011. I would like to thank the Steinhoff family, Garry and Debbie and their three daughters Tanya, Tyrney and Taylor for this information. I have been friends with the Steinhoff’s for years and I know “Hot Shot” was part of the family and will be missed greatly. To hear the full story on Hot Shot” go to westernradioshow.com Spring is in the air (I hope)! Tell me about Hot Shot’s clone “Another Shot”? It is really strange he has a lot of the same mannerisms, they both lick their lips before they eat, cock their legs the same, do the same little ear twitch. Add anything you would like to about his memory or his attitude, whatever you would like? He was probably the Best horse God could have ever sent to us. There is a reason for every thing and I truly believe it was no accident that Hot Shot came into our lives. There are a lot of stories of different times and things we did with Hot Shot. One time in Lincoln, NE tornadoes were hitting all around the facilities. We were in a safe place and I had Hot Shot ready to go in to the bathrooms if the sirens sounded. Everybody thought that was so awesome we were taking Hot Shot in the shelter with us. Once in Starkville, MS tornadoes were hitting all around the college. Garry could see one on the ground and Tanya and Taylor were in the motorhome. He jumped in their and yelled at them to get Hot Shot and take cover. Hot Shot was in the stall, Tanya ran and got him and they took cover in the shelter under the building. As they stood and watched, the tornadoes hit out buildings around them. There are a lot of stories about Hot Shot. I’m not going to say that a book could be in our near future. Hot Shot was rode around the Steinhoff ranch just three days before his passing and he bucked and played with Taylor. The chiropractor was here on Monday and he tried his normal thing to kick her. Then on Tuesday night we came in late from the Mike Johnson’s Invitational Barrel Race and Tyrney and Taylor went in his stall to clean his water trough and he tried to kick them. He had eaten all of his feed and hay from the night before and had drank his water, he was laying where he laid every morning or would be standing and waiting on me. When Clint is an 18 year old recent graduate of East Central High School. His parents are Terrie VanVolkenburgh and respectively Joe Trentman. He has grown up in the horse world, both parents have rode almost all their life...Clint's grandfather as some of you may remember was the late Terry VanVolkenburgh, who would run up and down the fences when his daughters would run barrels. Clint began barrel racing at the age of 4 with a pony, then went on to particpate in Jr. Rodeo and his favorite event was the sheep riding, had to believe he is now a barrel racer. He has won the Ohio Youth NBHA and Indiana Youth and Open NBHA , he has also won the congress youth barrel four times, and was runner up in the Congress Sweepstakes, placed at Josey Jr. world numerous times, and won the NBHA Youth World 1d in 2006. He loves to barrel race and is now trying his hand at the futurities. In Clint's spare time he mows grass for a part time job and is also very active in his church where he and his cousins are bible school helpers. Clint also volunteers one day a week at a school in Cincinatti where he spends time tutoring other kids in reading.

hh…March! Time to start thinking about tuning up and trimming down those fat wooly horses we’ve created over our winter break! Most people I know look at winter time as down-time for both horse and rider. It’s nice to take a break and regroup and let your horse just be a horse for a couple of months. Right: Cooper Morris and Strand Barricklow Below: Jay Musselman with Cord Barricklow

Several of us, in our downtime, use these few short months off to participate in other school activities and sports, maybe take in a horse expo or clinic to sharpen our skills, and some of us have taken up a new hobby called….”Goat Roping.” What is “goat roping” you ask? The venue is exactly like team roping so everyone knows the rules with one exception…no horses! Strand Barricklow (IHSRA Freshman) and family friend Jay Musselman have started J-S Goat Roping Production and have already held a couple of ropings at Jay’s Place. Their arena is portable and easy to set up so these can be held anywhere. In fact they plan on holding some goat ropings this summer around some high school rodeo’s so keep an eye out if you are interested! The only thing you will need is a goat rope (sold at most tack stores or they have them available for purchase at the goat ropings). Running shoes are optional! There is also no need for a partner as these ropings are held round-robin style. There is a small entry fee but round robin format pays back three places. Winners of the last round robin were first place team Cooper Morris (IJRA) heading and Cord Barricklow (IHSRA) heeling, second place Strand Barricklow (IHSRA) heading and Skyler Stevens heeling, and third place Donnie Wise heading with Trevor Colby (IJRA) heeling.

Don’t forget to check out our webpage for news, updates, and to check the latest standings on your favorite IHSRA cowboy or cowgirl!

Turner Basham I.H.S.R.A. is proud to introduce Turner Basham from Corydon, Indiana! Turner is 17 years old and is in Home school where he is in the eleventh grade. His parents are Michael and Carolyn Basham. Turner’s rodeo horses are Red and Sunny and his favorite events are steer wrestling, calf roping, and team roping. He is a two year member of the Indiana High School Rodeo Association. After graduating, Turner plans on going to college and continuing to rodeo. When asked why Turner participates in IHSRA he responded: “IHSRA has allowed me to make lasting friendships and the people would do anything for you. They are always there to encourage me. While I love the excitement of the rodeo competition, it is the friendships I have made that I love the most.” Turners most memorable rodeo moment to date was making it to the 2011 National High School Rodeo in Gillette, Wyoming.

StandBarricklow Strand Barricklow is in our member spotlight this month! He is a 15 year old freshman from Lebanon Indiana who attends Lebanon High School. His parents are Stormy and Rhonda Barricklow. Strands rodeo horses are Happy and Bubba and his favorite event is calf roping. Strand is no stranger to the rodeo scene and is quite a remarkable young man. He participates in high school rodeo because it gives him a chance to better his skills competing against kids his own age, as well as his brother Cord (featured in February’s Member spotlight). Strand also feels that high school rodeo is a great way to meet people and have an opportunity to compete at a National level. Strands best memory to date is winning second in the short round in chute dogging at the National Finals in Gallup, New Mexico and being featured on RFD TV

T

his month marks the start of rodeo season for the Cinch Junior High Division and I know our Indiana cowboys and cowgirls are ready to get back on the rodeo trail. Team Indiana will head to Greenville, KY to compete in a Cinch Division rodeo at the scheduled Quad States Rodeo on March 24th and 25th. The Cinch contestants are legging up their horses, hitting the practice pen and focusing on their goals. The Indiana Cinch Junior High Division team will compete against teams from Kentucky, Illinois and Missouri. Good luck to all the Cinch Division contestants!

April will be a busy month for our IJRA contestants and our Cinch Division contestants too. IJRA will host a booth in the West Pavilion at the Hoosier Horse Fair April 13th-15th. IJRA members’ who would like to help with our booth, please contact Rachel Thomas. There will be dummy roping, demonstrations on goat tying, videos of our IJRA and Cinch Division cowboys and cowgirls, raffle tickets for a 40’ Powder Creek round pen and also raffle tickets for the Cinch Division Team. We hope everyone will stop by our booth with your kids for a little break or to learn more about IJRA during your visit at the HHF. Monica Shreeve and Pam Mackey did a great job organizing an IJRA fundraiser at Lucas Oil Stadium. With the help of the Shreeve, Lowe, Eastep, Hurley, Griffith, Mackey, and Bergman families, over $1100 was raised for our association. Thank you to the families who helped out with this fundraiser and also a big thank

God On the Mountain

forget that God is still God and still with me when I am on that mountain! I still need him when things are going well. We all have times in our lives, some more than others, when we can’t even see the top of the mountain, let alone think we will make it there. If we have God in our lives and Jesus beside us, it seems easier (to me) to continue putting one foot in front of the other until the mountaintop finally comes into view. With each step we take, Jesus is there, and all the while we are building strength as we climb. We are building endurance and strength that will be of great benefit when we get to the next mountain. That’s right, I said the NEXT mountain. One of my favorite songs of all time goes like this...(Yes I’m going to include the WHOLE song!!) Life is easy when you’re up on the mountain And you’ve got peace of mind like you’ve never known. But then things change and you’re down in the valley. Don’t lose faith, child, you are never alone. For the God on the mountain is still God in the valley. When things go wrong, He’ll make them right. And the God of the good times is still God in the bad times. The God of the day is still God in the night. You talk of faith when you’re up on the mountain. Oh but the talk comes easy when life’s at its best. But it’s down in the valley of trials and temptation That’s when faith is really put to the test. For the God on the mountain is still God in the valley. When things go wrong, He’ll make them right. And the God of the good times is still God in the bad times. The God of the day is still God in the night.

Very seldom can I sing that song and not have tears in my eyes...(those of you that know me, know that isn’t all that unusual) but those words really touch my heart. I think mostly because they are a simple reminder in a song telling me that God is ALWAYS with me. What I have been thinking about a lot lately is how it is so easy for me, in my personal walk, to call out to God when I am down in the valley. When things aren’t going so well, or turmoil arises, it has become second nature for me to call out to God. (And I am so very thankful that I have him, the peace and the hope that he brings during those times.) But what I have also been thinking about lately is how easy it is for me to get busy and

Page 64

“But I don’t want to think about the next mountain....I haven’t got to the top of this one yet,” you may say. I say, “Training.” We are all in training while we are here. And once we reach the top of the mountain, we had better not forget to continue our training! Ask yourself this question, “What would happen in the competitive horse world if we neglected to continue training our equine athletes in between races or events?” What if we just let them stand in a stall and only got them out when we had to compete (climb our mountain.) Any serious horseman will tell you that is just asking for injuries - let alone the fact that you are most likely not going to get any kind of performance out of your horse. Most horse-people know that you need to keep those horses in shape in order for them to perform at their best. That means that while you may not have a competition today, that horse needs exercised somehow. He needs to be in training. Even if it is just on the walker, or turned out to play. And sometime between events a little fine-tuning or refresher ride can work wonders when the real thing comes around. From morning workouts on the racetrack to an exhibition run around the barrels, horses need to stay sharp. They need to be in training. So do we. That’s where I go back to our song. “The God on the mountain is still God in the valley.” God is always there. Always. Whether we think we need him or not....He is there..... and we ALWAYS need him. We need to be exercising and training our spirit for that next mountain we will have to climb. If we find

ourselves on top and things are going well we had better think twice about just “parking it” until we get knocked off and go tumbling down into the valley. We will have to climb our way out....and if we’ve gotten “out of shape” we are going to be a while making it to the top again. “OK,” you say, “How do I go about keeping in shape when things are good and I’m on the mountain - so to speak?” Training. The kind of training we all need is most likely what we find ourselves doing when we are in the valley. Seeking God, which is very likely to include: praying, reading our bible, spending time with other Christians and spending time at church. “Well, I don’t have time for all of that!” Says even me, sometimes, to myself. But, the fact is we can’t afford not to make time. Even if it is starting with one of the four and working our way into the other three. Just like you would if you were training a horse...introducing a little at a time, working towards a goal. I encourage you to try. Eventually it becomes not just training, but it becomes a relationship. Just like it does with the horses we train, so it does with our Father. Remember that God is still God. He is still God when we are floating through life and things are going well. He will still be God when disaster strikes and we will be needing him again. I would like to think that I don’t just need God in my life sometimes, but that I want God in my life all of the time. That’s what makes us stronger. It’s having that relationship with the one who knows us better than we know ourselves. It’s getting to know Him through an actual attempt to build our relationship through training. And that training needs to take place when we are up on the mountain or down in the valley. Because when things go wrong - He’ll make them right. The God of the good times, is still God in the bad times. And the God of the day, is still God in the night.

Until next month.... This is a “No Parking Zone” So get Training! Happy Trails & God Bless! Christa

On the Trail

By Brother Brad Curtis of Mountain Top Cowboy Church

BACK IN THE SADDLE I was ridin’ along at night Had a little barrel fever Had stayed at the bit house Couldn’t seem to leave’r

It was then she kind ’a stumbled I came out of that ol’ kak Seemed to fall for mile Landin’ on my back

No chow or water Is this how it would end In this dark hole Without a single friend

I reached my hands up My rope was hang from the horn Swearin’ the whole time To stay off that ol’ mashed corn

My ol’ pony knew her way home She was a good ol’ stick Gouged her with some iron She began to hit a lick

I had gone over the edge Into an hellish pit Layin’ there in pain Mad enough to spit

It was then I realized The Almighty was above I remembered that ol’ sin buster Preachin’ about His love

When I came out ‘a that pit Hugged that little mare Said Lord I know it was you We’re going to make quite a pair

Getting near the ranch I turned my pony loose We were kickin’ up some dust Me and my ol’ cayuse

All of the ranch hands were gone On a cattle drive No one knew I was here How could I survive

I cried out with all my heart Lord, I repent of my ways Get me out of this pit I’ll help you gather strays

Climbed back in the saddle Feelin’ a bit restored Singin’ a new song One about my Lord

Now one more ridge to ride Then it was all downhill I dug in my irons No more time to kill

As time passed in that pit My head began to clear Feeling pretty alone Knowin’ death was near

Lookin’ up I see my ol’ pony Standin’ at the pit’s rim Felt a little like cryin’ My future wasn’t so dark and grim

Psalm 40: 1-4 I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD. Blessed is that man that maketh the LORD his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.

One Last (& most important) thought… Salvation is a gift and a choice......

Read past issues of our Christian Cowboy Collection and the Christian Barrel Racer’s Newsletter at the website below!

Jesus died on the cross as the final sacrifice. When He was resurrected on the 3rd day, he defeated Satan for us. All we have to do is believe that He beat death and acknowledge it with our words. If we believe that and accept Him as our personal savior…we are promised eternal life with Him in Heaven. You can’t earn your way into Heaven; you have to believe your way there. So many people think they “aren’t good enough” to get to Heaven… But… Salvation is a GIFT from God and you don’t earn a gift. Gifts are something someone gives to you and for the gift to be yours, you have to accept it. All we have to do is accept that wonderful gift. I know I have…won’t you? But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. Romans 5:15

For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Romans 10: 9-10

Mystery of the Month Our Mystery this month takes place at the Tri-State Boot & Saddle Club. What we want to know is.... who is the cowboy? His horse? What did he win? What year? And where is this “Tri-State Boot & Saddle Club” located? We can tell you that our cowboy and his fsmily are still very involved with horses. You will, however, see them a little more often at the flat tracks in Ohio and Indiana than in the saddle club/arena events these days.

If you can correctly identify our cowboy.....and give us as much information as possible....you can win your choice of a one year subscription to The Horse Resource, a “Horsey Hat” or a “Horsey-T.” Please send us your photos from the past....we’d like to use them in our Mystery of the Month. Horses, people, events, etc... Send via email to: thehorseresource@ msn.com or mail to The Horse Resource 12601 S CR 200 W Muncie, IN 47302 We will return your original photos to you.

Still No Winner....... Our Mystery last month involved a group of people. They were involved with one of Indiana’s oldest horse related organizations (that sadly dissolved a few years back.) Here are a couple of hints: One cowgirl’s father was in a recent issue of The Horse Resource honoring his Quarter Horse Racing History, and two of the cowboys are closely related to The Horse Resource (literally)..... Identify as many of the group as you can! If you can correctly identify our group of horsey people, the group they were involved with and the year....and give us as much information as possible....you can win your choice of a one year subscription to The Horse Resource, a “Horsey Hat” or a “Horsey-T.”

Do You Still Like Playing? Help Us Out..... We are running low on photos.....Please send us your older photos of horsemen and women (and kids) that are still active in the horse business today. Or if you have pictures of a well known horse or event....that will mix things up a bit. We’re up for some new mysterys if you are!! Keep sending us those photos!! Send via email to thehorseresource@msn.com or mail to 12601 S CR 200 W Muncie, IN 47302 Page 79
