LETTER FROM THE EDITOR A Letter from the Editor
I
t’s almost time for Spring to show up. I think Bella mentioned March coming in like a lion in her article this month...I think she is going to be right. It looks like we have another winter storm heading our way for the beginning of March. I really hope that this is Old Man Winter’s goodbye present to us for 2014. I’ll be glad when he leaves us for good this year. He’s been kind of a creep since Christmas.
In spite of the frigid temperatures and knee deep snow drifts from the past couple of months, life goes on for everyone....and the the work continues for anyone having horses....it just intensifies and tests our dedication. I think that is part of what sets us apart. We are dedicated to our animals even when the conditions tell us we are crazy. For instance, we have been removing ice from water buckets since I was a kid, rubber mallet and all...refreshing water a couple times a day. It has always went with the territory of owning horses and living through Indiana winters....that’s the dedication I am talking about. But....I have to be honest, this year I spoiled myself a bit and purchased several heated buckets for the barn. All I have to say about that is....”OMG!!!! Why didn’t I do that a long time ago??” Life suddenly got a little more bearable when the thermometer said “Go back inside.”
Follow Us
I hope all of you have wintered well and are looking as forward to spring as I am. Stay dedicated and remember to count your blessings on horseback! God Bless and Ride Safe, Christa Conway

The Time is Here Don’t miss out on the tradition of fun-filled events and activities for equine enthusiasts of all ages.
Ride with Pride at this year’s 36th Annual Hoosier Horse Fair & Expo (HHF&E), April 4 – 6, brought to you by the Indiana Horse Council. Since 1978, this wildly popular three-day fair & expo has celebrated and promoted the equine industry with demonstrations, live entertainment, educational presentations by nationally renowned horse clinicians and trainers, 4-H competition, youth activities, ranch rodeo, a large trade show, and much more. Each year, the event is run by 200+ dedicated volunteers with all proceeds going back into the industry. The HHF&E is the largest gathering in Indiana focused on the horse enthusiast. This year’s event promises more fun-filled traditions including our Hay Café, Better Horse Radio, and clinician’s breakfast “Morning Oats and Stable Advice,” along with new and exciting events, such as Hoppy Horse on April 3rd with VIP packages available. Be sure to take advantage of our Discount Days for Youth (April 4), Family (April 5), and Military (April 6). To purchase tickets and for more information, visit us online at hoosierhorsefair.org.

Wood Chewing Rustynailfl Extreme Veteran Posts: 494 Location: Where it doesnt snow Our 16yo mare has just started chewing on our barn in the past week or so. She has never done this before (that we have noticed). Nothing has changed in our routine. In the morning they are let out for the day with hay. In the evening they are stalled for the night with hay and feed. It looks as if she is doing it throughout the night, possibly after finishing her feed/hay.
would mean she is chewing while out during the day. Unless the horse in that stall is chewing also which is highly doubtful.
I know there are preventative things I can look into which I am planning on doing but I am a little concerned with this behavior starting out of nowhere. I have done a little research and have found that sometimes this can be common in colder/wet times of the year. I am in S. FL and we have recently been going through some wet weather with cold fronts. I have not noticed any of my other horses doing this.
I said Whoa Extreme Veteran Posts: 537 Location: NE WY I’ve had horses throughout the years just randomly take to chewing wood. Seems like somedays you go out to the barn and half a post is gone for no apparent reason...then get them to stop and never see them do it again, or maybe start again in a few years.
Any info or suggestions are appreciated!! barrelracr131 Hungarian Midget Woman Location: Midwest Get a slow feeder hay bag if you do not have one already. :) Rustynailfl RE: Yes, thank you! That is one thing I planned to pick up today. But what I am more concerned about is the fact that she has never done this before...worried that she might be trying to tell me something is wrong..? Not sure if wood chewing is a sign of anything? Or if she is simply just bored. I noticed this morning a part of the barn that is not part of her stall with some chewing on it…something she cannot reach from her stall, which
barrelracr131 Mine would do it from boredom, or if he did not have hay in front of him 24/7. I think it is a “grazing” thing. Rustynailfl RE: Thank you, im a bit of a worrywart :)
I always went and bought them a fresh salt block/mineral block too, just kind of thinking maybe if they had some excess chewing/licking energy, we could entise them to use it in a more productive way. And, you might freak out, but I have always just used diesel (can also mix in some cayenne pepper for a very persistant chewer) and just paint the wood surface with it. Rustynailfl RE: I have heard of the diesel, and also used motor oil..? Not only makes a nice stain but also supposedly helps to keep them from chewing. I’ll be sure to pick up a block while I’m at it. Thanks! Crowned Image I Chore in Chucks Posts: 1765 Location: Maryland My horse does it and I think he is just being rotten. he bites on the posts outside of his stall when I walk into the barn to feed and then when im going
to bring him in for feeding. bought him a lick-it and it has pretty much stopped.
Location: Cap’n Joan Rotgut.....alberta I heard or read that it’s a sign of ulcers.
eta: he also gets plenty of hay for him to get through the night and salt and mineral blocks. I have been told when horses are chewing/eating wood they are missing something in their diet... not sure if it holds any weight but, may be worth looking into if you’re real worried.
Rustynailfl RE: I have also heard this before I believe.
luvropin Elite Veteran Posts: 754 Location: Southeastern Idaho RE: I said Whoa I do this same thing...wood chewing makes me nuts. even with loose mineral in front of some of mine they will still chew when bored. nmeastplains Veteran Posts: 187 Location: Somewhere in the middle of nowhere My mare started doing this to some wood panels we put up as a wind break for her....my SO said since she didn’t appreciate the wind break and wasn’t crapping logs for us to burn, there wasn’t a need to keep it there and we took it all down. lonely va barrelxr Reaching for the stars.... Posts: 11373 I’ve decided that any future buildings or repairs will NOT use wood. I designed a nice run in using concrete block with wood only in the rafters to hold up the roof. I’ve heard the argument against steel frames, but considering how fast the horses can eat down a run in, the steel will last longer. So maybe steel frame and vinyl siding or corrugated vinyl will work just fine too. mruggles Good Grief!

I have had her on Ulc-R-Aid by Animed for the past few months..not because she showed any signs really before, more as a preventative since I was already giving it to my gelding who showed signs. Could putting her on this actually hurt her? They both get 2 Tbsp daily. Thanks! mruggles RE: Well from what I have read.............and I’m no vet so take what I write as jmo.......I don’t think the ulc r aid will cure ulcers (unless I missed something in the ingredients) omerprazole is the best thing to cure ulcers.......and I would think you would need to cure them before preventing them (if they are already existing) Rustynailfl I noticed that she is also dropping her feed, probably needs her teeth done for sure. Would this cause one to start chewing? Thanks again! mruggles RE: It very well could....... good luck Rustynailfl RE: Thank you, I will get that done first and go from there. Thanks again everyone!! www.barrelhorseworld.com

News QUICK DYNASTY, DASH MASTER JESS NAB CLOSING DAY STAKES WINS; MUNIZ, LEVARIO TAKE TITLES
Beduino by a neck to register his 3rd victory of the 2013-14 Hialeah park season. Dash Master Jess stopped the timer in 21.601 seconds for 440 yards and garnered the winner’s share of $60,000. Trainer Rolando Almanza had originally named Ricky Ramirez to ride Dash Master Jess, but turned to veteran local jockey Shanley Jackson when Ramirez was unable to take the call. Jackson was scheduled to ride Joltin Jess in the race, but Matt Frazier –trainer of the multiple stakes-winner– decided to withdraw his gelding from the race at morning scratch time.

The official order of finish in the 2014 Sam Abbey Memorial Invitational, reduced to 9 runners when Habits Secret was scratched at the starting gate, was: Dash Master Jess, Dashing Beduino, Jazz Be First, Texelkas Chic, Feature My News, Coppers Fit, Sure Shot B, Freaking, and Mi Angela. Sunday’s ten-race program also included the $52,000 Sailfish Stakes at 1,000 yards, won by 22-1 outsider Reds Casino under jockey Alex Gonzalez for trainer Marcus Strickland and the $21,100 Roble Rojo Bonus Challenge at 300 yards, won by Madrecita under jockey Luis Guerrero for trainer John Stinebaugh.
Hialeah, FL / February 23, 2014 – Martin Reynoza’s three-year-old gelding Quick Dynasty and Cesar Rosales’s four-year-old colt Dash Master Jess were the big stakes winners on Sunday’s closing day program at Hialeah Park as this iconic South Florida track, known by millions of fans as “the world’s most beautiful race course,” drew the curtain down on the 2013-14 live Quarter Horse season.
Trainer Muniz recorded his 34th victory of the meet when Quick Dynasty won the South Florida Quarter Horse Derby. He finished four wins up on Alfredo Gomez (34-30) and tallied his second consecutive training title at Hialeah Park. Jockey Levario chalked up a riding double on closing day to finish three up on Omar Reyes (47-44).
Eight runners contested the 2014 South Florida Quarter Horse Derby after the scratches of Big Time Jp and Beattie Feathers, finishing in the following order: Quick Dynasty, Pyc First Prize Fany, Eye Get The Blues, Pruittized, Furyofthesea, Max Cartel, Corona Sportiness, and Eagles Magic. One race later, in an emotional 1st edition of the $100,000-guaranteed Sam Abbey Memorial Invitational, Dash Master Jess, by Mr Jess PerryDash Master Miss, came charging late and held off the closing Dashing

Quick Dynasty, by Fdd Dynasty-Royal Quick Glass, defeated Pyc First Prize Fany by 1-1/2 lengths to win the $183,295 South Florida Quarter Horse Derby. Saddled by leading trainer Brandon Muniz and ridden by leading rider Jesse Levario, Quick Dynasty posted his 4th victory of the 2013-14 Hialeah Park season and became the only four-time winner of the meet. He was still a maiden when he won a trial for the December 29 Hialeah Futurity. The gelding finished a disappointing 8th in the futurity, but has rebounded with three straight wins to start 2014. Quick Dynasty was clocked in a time of 21.550 seconds for 440 yards and earned a winner’s share of $84,315.
Hialeah Park ended the 2013-14 season with another record-breaking day at the mutuel windows on Sunday. With an ebullient crowd of 5,000 (est) fans on track putting $110,593 through the wickets and off-track wagering generating another $402,407, the all-sources total handle reached $513,000, almost $30,000 more than the $483,702 bet last Sunday.

The 3-year-old filly worked 250 yards from the gate handily in :12.50 seconds over a fast track according to Remington Park clocker Vicky Grothaus. Cartel Chica broke her maiden at Remington Park in her career debut in March 2012. She went on to place in consecutive Oklahomabred stakes races in her other local attempts. A daughter of Teller Cartel by the Feature Mr Jess mare Jess Because I Could has earned $31,358 from seven starts with one victory, a pair of seconds and one third-place run. The Remington Park racetrack opened for training at 1pm. The event marked the end of eight straight days of inactivity due to subfreezing temperatures and winter weather. Temperatures are forecast to reach the 50-degree and 60-degree marks many days in central Oklahoma, allowing horsemen and their athletes to get their important track training in as the season opener on March 7 approaches. Remington Park will conduct training races on both Friday, Feb. 14 and Saturday, Feb. 15 at 11:30am. The training, or schooling, races allow horsemen to prepare their athletes that have yet to make their first career start. The training race offers a simulated experience to what the horse will actually encounter when they take part in their pari-mutuel racing debut. The 2014 American Quarter Horse & Mixed-breed Season at Remington Park begins March 7 and continues thru June 1. Open daily at 10:30am for casino gaming and simulcast racing, Remington Park features the Bricktown Brewery on the casino floor. Admission, general parking and valet parking are always free at Remington Park, home of the Grade 2 Oklahoma Futurity, to be run for the 73rd time on March 22, 2014. Tracked by over 51,000 fans on Facebook and 5,000 Twitter followers, Remington Park is Oklahoma City’s only Racetrack & Casino and is located at the junction of Interstates 35 & 44, in the heart of the Oklahoma City Adventure District. Event Honors Legendary Champion and the Men who Rode Him
Feb. 17, 2014 - DOSWELL, VA – It’s been almost 44 years since legendary Triple Crown winner Secretariat was born at The Meadow on March 30, 1970, and legions of devoted fans are still celebrating the birthday of “America’s Super Horse.” The annual Secretariat Birthday Celebration at The Meadow in Doswell, Virginia will offer fans a triple treat on Saturday, March 29, reuniting the three men who rode “Big Red” at the peak of his spectacular racing career. Slated to appear at the event are Hall of Fame jockeys Ron Turcotte and Eddie Maple and exercise rider Charlie Davis. It will be the first time all three men have been together at Secretariat’s birthplace in Virginia. News Maple rode Secretariat to victory in his final race, the Canadian International at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto. He also was aboard Riva Ridge in a second place effort to Secretariat in the prestigious 1973 Marlboro Cup. Davis exercised Secretariat during his morning gallops and developed his own close relationship with the great horse. Joining the gathering will be Kate Chenery Tweedy, daughter of Penny Chenery and co-author of the award-winning Secretariat’s Meadow - The Land, The Family, The Legend and Riva Ridge – Penny’s First Champion, which she wrote with Leeanne Meadows Ladin. Ladin, as author/ historian, is now Secretariat tourism manager at The Meadow. The Meadow Birthday Celebration has become a tradition and anticipated occasion for Big Red fans who travel from across the country to enjoy the many festivities held in the historic and pastoral setting of Secretariat’s birthplace. The celebration will begin at 11 a.m. Program highlights include: • autograph sessions with the Secretariat team, who will make a grand entrance at 11:30 a.m. escorted by members of the Caroline Hunt • extensive display of Secretariat merchandise and memorabilia for purchase • exclusive memorabilia display including the first training saddles worn by Secretariat and Riva Ridge • meeting local Secretariat descendants from the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation at James River • narrated tram tours of the farm featuring Secretariat’s original foaling shed • presentation of the horses and hounds of the Caroline Hunt • meet and greet with original Meadow Stable grooms and riders who worked at the farm in its heyday • pony rides and moon bounce for children • local vendors selling equine-related items and Virginia products; and much more. New this year is an Open House for the Museum of the Virginia Horse and the Meadow Champions Galleries in the Meadow Hall mansion. The museum exhibit illustrates the history of the horse in Virginia since Colonial times. The Meadow Champions Galleries showcase the famous broodmares and racehorses of Meadow Stable as well as the 1972-73 Triple Crown races of Secretariat and Riva Ridge. At 5 p.m., the Secretariat team will be on hand for a VIP reception in Meadow Hall mansion. At 6 p.m., there will be an exclusive screening of the film “Secretariat’s Jockey – Ron Turcotte,” followed by Q&A with the team. Capping off the festivities at 8 p.m. will be the first ever Champagne Birthday Toast, which will take place at Secretariat’s original foaling shed with Turcotte, Maple, Davis and Tweedy. Celebrants will sip in style with an exclusive commemorative champagne glass. General admission tickets for the Secretariat Birthday Celebration are $12 in advance; $15 at the gate; $5 for children age 5 to 12 and free for children age 4 and younger. House Passes Farm Bill, Senate Approval Expected American Horse Council - On January 29, 2013, The House of Representatives passed a multi-year Farm Bill known as the Agricultural Act of 2014. The bill will set national agriculture policy and reauthorize many U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) programs for the next five years. The horse industry is not as dependent on programs authorized by the Farm Bill as other segments of American agriculture. However, several programs important to the horse industry are reauthorized by the bill, including livestock disaster programs, the Market Access Program, and the Environmental Quality Incentives Program. The bill is expected to be passed by the Senate and signed by the President in the near future. Agricultural Act of 2014 The bill will reauthorize and maintain current funding levels for the Market Access Program (MAP) until 2018. MAP provides funding for overseas marketing and promotional activities to help build commercial export markets for U.S. agricultural products and commodities. The program is used by the horse industry to promote American horses to foreign markets. The bill will also reauthorize the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP). EQIP is a voluntary program that provides financial and technical assistance to agricultural producers. Assistance includes help to plan and implement conservation practices that address natural resource concerns and provide opportunities to improve soil, water, plant, animal, air and related resources on agricultural land and non-industrial private forestland. Horse farms and ranches are eligible for this program. The Livestock Indemnity Program (LIP), the Livestock Forage Program (LFP), and the Emergency Livestock Assistance Program (ELAP), which expired in 2011, are reauthorized. These programs are administrated by the USDA Farm Service Administration and compensate livestock producers, including horse breeding farms and ranches, for the loss of animals from natural disasters and diseases, and help producers who have lost grazing land from drought pay for feed. The bill explicitly includes horses in the definition of livestock and ensures horse farms and ranches are eligible for disaster programs open to other livestock producers. Additionally, the manager’s statement accompanying the bill recognized the importance of equine health and encouraged USDA to increase resources for equine health research in its annual budget request. The AHC supported reauthorization of these programs that are beneficial to the horse industry and the manager’s statement regarding equine health.

God’s Love Language
I
t’s a cool fall evening and you’re camping with your friends. As you encircle the campfire, sparks move upward as if pulled from earth to heaven. The cracks and pops accompany nature’s fireworks show against the backdrop of a dark sky. You move your chair a little closer. The tingle of warmth returns to your toes. You walk into a one-room cabin buried deep in the woods high up in the mountains. Your cheeks sting from the bite of the frigid air. The walls are painted in light from the dance of the roaring fire in the fieldstone fireplace. As you move closer, invisible waves of heat soothe your face as you stand transfixed by the flames. You are a soldier entangled in the battles on the western front in World War II. Your gloves have offered little comfort from frostbite, as you’ve clenched your rifle in a foxhole. Back behind the enemy lines, a small fire hidden in a trashcan offers a life-saving moment. You extend your hands over the flames and feel your fingers for the first time in days. You are a child being tucked into a huge feather bed. It’s upstairs in the old farmhouse far up the lane from the nearest road. You are a five-year
old boy, who has spent another day of great adventure on that magical farm. The room is so cold you can almost see your breath. It is not a bed you lie on, but one that swallows you in softness. You know if you extend your feet downward, it’ll be even colder. You feel unexpected heat and realize Grandma D has put the bed warmer under the covers. It’s an “ahhh moment” beyond description. Allow your mind to escape the cold. It can bite at our skin, but it can’t steal our hearts. If only for a moment, feel the warmth of God’s love for us. It is spoken in every conceivable language. There is a divine expression of it for all of our senses. His love can be heard in words of comfort. It is seen in the glisten of ice covered trees. It can be tasted in scream of frigid air in our lungs. It is breathed in from the smell of the smoke from the chimney. It can be felt in the warmth of the sun on our face. In the bitterness of winter, His love is still there to swallow us whole, just like Grandma D’s old feather bed.

Dear “Ask the Vet,” Do you have any advice on foaling and then trying to rebreed on a foal heat? Thanks, Jonathon To answer Jonathon’s question, we are reprinting an informative article from 2012 (we’ve changed the dates accordingly) where Dr. Fisch addresses foaling preparation and breeding on a foal heat.
Preparation for Foaling & Breeding on Foal Heat As we enter into 2014 foaling/breeding season, breeders everywhere begin to prepare for that exciting time of year when all the new foals are born. We have all given our mares their rhinopneumonitis vaccinations at the prescribed times of 5,7 and 9 months. For those mares that conceived in early February or late January 2013, they should have already had their basic prefoaling vaccinations of tetanus, encephalitis, flu, rhinopneumonitis and west nile virus in early December. Depending on the history of the farm on which the foals will be born and how much immunity we want the new foal to get from his dam’s colostrum, the mare may also be vaccinated for strangles, roto virus and botulism. All these vaccines raise the antibody level that will be present in the mare’s colostrum. They should be given four to six weeks before the foal is due to be born. Some of the vaccine protocols involve giving a series of two or more vaccinations given in the prefoaling period so it is important to start the process with the time sequence of each vaccine protocol in mind. Since ingesting the mare’s colostrum is the foal’s only way of obtaining immunity to deadly diseases such as tetanus and eastern encephalitis and diseases that can cause death or at least sickness such as flu, EHV1 or rhinopnemonitis, roto virus, botulism and strangles it is imperative that these vaccinations be given as part of the preparation for foaling. Along with making sure the mare is vaccinated properly we need to make sure she has the

proper nutrition during her entire pregnancy but especially in the third trimester which is when most of the growth occurs. It is during the last trimester that the mare has the greatest demand for nutrients. A proper amount of protein, essential vitamins and micronutrients are vitally important to intrauterine growth of the foal and to getting the foal off to a healthy and strong start. Proper nutrition also helps insure that the mare has the body condition to promote adequate milk production and to breed back on foal heat. During early pregnancy the mare has the ability to divert an adequate supply of her own nutrients to the foal but in later pregnancy the demands of the developing fetus cannot be met if the mare is on a marginally adequate or inadequate diet. The nutritional level of the mare can greatly influence the health of the foal at birth. In general the mare should be fed a good quality mare and foal feed along with a good quality hay mixture which meets the protein and calcium/phosphorous requirements for a gestating mare. An example of this mixture would be an amount equal to 2% of the mare’s body weight with about 33% to 50% being an excellent quality legume such as alfalfa or perennial peanut hay. In those ratios the correct calcium/phosphorous ratios are kept intact and the protein level is high enough to provide for growth of the fetus. Not only are total amounts of certain nutrients important but the ratios of the nutrients to each other are just as important. These ratios can come into play preventing such developmental
orthopedic diseases such as OCD. The next step is to have the mare at the farm where she will foal at least four weeks prior to foaling. This allows her to build colostral immunity to the germs at the farm. About two weeks before her due date make sure that if she has a caslick’s surgery that the caslick’s is taken out. This will prevent her from tearing her reproductive tract during the foaling process. This is about the time we install a foal alarm and start monitoring her for birth of the foal. The foal alert allows us to be at the mare’s side within two minutes of the time the birth process begins. Assuming the birth is normal, the foal needs to nurse within three hours and the placenta needs to be passed within four hours of birth. The foal’s navel is dipped into 25% chlorhexidene solution every few hours until it dries up. An IgG antibody level is determined from a blood sample from the foal at 24 hours of age. If the antibody level is too low we give the foal hyperimmune plasma to get the antibody levels to the correct levels.
Depending on how fast the flushing fluid that comes out of the uterus clears up, the uterus is flushed with 1 to 5 liters of Preparation for Foaling and Rebreeding on Foal Heat LRS every day to every other day until she is in foal heat. If her delivery was normal and her uterus is normal size and the uterine flush is clean then the mare is bred on foal heat as long as she ovulates on day 10 or later post-delivery. The chances of conception when breeding earlier than on a day 10 ovulation are much less than when the uterus has had at least 10 days to involute. A normal birth, uterine flushes and oxytocin injections are vitally important to getting the mare to conceive on foal heat.
In order to give the mare her best chance of conceiving on foal heat, we give the mare oxytocin every few hours post-delivery to help expel any blood and contamination in her uterus from the foaling process. About 48 hours post foaling a 5 liter uterine flush with lactated ringers solution helps clean the uterus and helps it involute to its normal size.
If everything goes well, you will have a healthy pregnant mare with a healthy foal by her side when the mare is ultrasounded two weeks later and you will have effectively backed the foaling date up by two weeks for the mare’s 2013 foal. Foaling time is a very exciting time. Attention to details can be the key to having a healthy mare and newborn foal.

olar vortex, snow, icy roads please go away! The Indiana High School Rodeo member have been hard at work fighting snow, and gearing up for the up coming rodeo season. Even the bad weather these past months, has not stopped Indiana High School Rodeo (IHSRA) Student Officers from traveling to the National High School Rodeo Mid Winter Meeting in Daniels, West Virginia. A Mid Winter meeting is when the whole association gets together to talk about new rule changes and plan the National Junior and High School Rodeos to be held in June and July 2014. The IHSRA Officers who attended the NHSRA Mid Winter meeting on January 22-25 was Derek Franks IHSRA President, Michael Shreeve IHSRA Vice President, and Camrie Goodson IHSRA Queen. The IHSRA Secretary Jessie Hoagland was not able to attend the meeting due the weather. The student officers attended meetings and enjoyed catered meals but when asked about their favorite part of the trip, the recreation center at Glades Spring Resort was the answer. The resort offered tennis, bowling, a lap pool, hot tub, saunas, steam rooms, basketball court, salon, theater, workout room, and arcade room. While in and out of the

The National High School Rodeo Mid Winter Meeting in Daniels, West Virginia had a very inspirational speaker present during the Student Meeting. Her name was Amberley Snyder, a major inspiration for everyone! She is known for her story of getting back up when life knocks a person down. Amberley wrecked her truck on her way to Colorado from Wyoming and was thrown out of the truck and broke her spine. She was told she would never walk again or be physically capable of riding her horse or compete in a rodeo, the sport she loved. With determination, Amberley Snyder is riding again with several different seat belts on her saddle and competing in college rodeo in barrel racing and is now able to breakaway rope again. She is an inspiration for hope and courage to never give up on your dreams! To learn more about Amberley Snyder like her page on Facebook. Not long after the IHSRA Student Officers returned from West Virginia they began to prepare for the Indiana High School Rodeo Mid Winter Meeting in Franklin, Indiana on February 15. The meeting was a huge success with several new officers elected to the IHSRA board including a new president after Doug Dickinson gave up the reins. The board

and all the High School members honored Doug with a custom made Gist belt buckle celebrating six years of great leadership and friendship to all he met. We will miss you Doug, we are sure to see you on the rodeo circuit. All enjoyed the meeting and dinner and afterwards the adults held an auction to raise money for the scholarship fund while the high school and cinch cowboys and cowgirls enjoyed a masquerade prom and dance. This was a great way to socialize and get to know fellow contestants. The spring rodeo schedule was finalized and it won’t be long until we are traveling to our first rodeo of the year. We will be joining the Illinois High School Rodeo team in DuQuoin March 29 and 30, and then it’s off to the Hoosier Horse Fair. The IHSRA will have a booth set up manned
by the student officers, so stop by and see for yourself what the IHSRA is all about and even join us, you will have a great time and meet many new friends. Hope to see you there. Miss Indiana High School Rodeo Queen 2013-2014 Camrie Goodson

Imprinting and “Raising A Child Up”
It’s that time of year again. Baby horses are all over my social media pages. Then there are the questions and discussions about “imprinting” foals. “Do you imprint your foals?” “How much imprinting is too much?” There are blogs and chat rooms full of the discussion this time of year. One thing most everyone agrees on when it comes to imprinting is that it can be a really good thing if done correctly. The impression you leave with that foal will impact it in the future. It will make it’s training life much easier or, if imprinted in the “wrong” way, it could make the foal’s road a lot harder. The dictionary’s definition of imprinting is as follows:
(Animal Behavior, Psychology) -rapid learning that occurs during a brief receptive period, typically soon after birth or hatching, and establishes a long-lasting behavioral response to a specific individual or object, as attachment to parent, offspring, or site.
I’m not going to go too far into the specific ideas about how to imprint a foal, I just want to be sure to point out that every foal ever born in captivity has been imprinted in one way or another if it was handled at all during the first couple hours of life. The questions then become whether or not the imprinting was intentional and if it will lead to good things in the future. (Just as our horses are being trained anytime we are in their realm, whether we are intending to be in a training session or not, so the foals are imprinted by our actions.) And so the same influence carries on and applies to our children. What kind of imprinting are we doing to them that will affect their future? Another definition of imprinting from the same dictionary is this: -to impress (a quality, character, distinguishing mark, etc.). -to fix firmly on the mind, memory, etc.
Each day we spend with our children (or any children for that matter) we are imprinting them. We are leading by example, impressing qualities and characteristics into their memory. The question is the same as before. Is it intentional and will it lead to good things in the future? I know my kids have caught me in a weak moment of road rage more than once (not the “made it on TV” kind, but maybe the “middle class mom” kind) or they have seen me get frustrated to the point that I huff and puff.
Page 46
Will they handle their future life situations like they have seen me do? Have I left an impression (good or bad) that will be etched in memory and used as reference in their future lives? Talk about putting pressure on us as parents....but it is true. Children learn what they live. The imprinting is going on every day that we have them while they are young. The bible gives us advice on raising children in several places. Here are just a few of my favorites. Proverbs 22:6 (KJV) Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. Deuteronomy 6:5-7 (KJV) And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them
when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. Proverbs 13:24 (KJV) He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes. Colossians 3:21 (KJV) Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged. Proverbs 29:17 (KJV) Correct thy son, and he shall give thee rest; yea, he shall give delight unto thy soul.
I know I need to work on setting a better example for my kids....showing them discipline in love, hugging them more (before it becomes lame or uncool)....most importantly keeping God first in my life so that is imprinted in theirs. What kind of imprinting are you doing? I know I need to work on mine. Happy Trails & God Bless! Christa

SPRING CLEANING The Boss come riding up Slid him to a stop Stepped off like a champ As every jaw did drop
He then dropped His reins Grabbed a whip from His saddle With anger in his voice Shouted, I’m not driving cattle
When I’m not around Come to my Father’s place You can talk to Him Like it’s face to face
He then looked around Didn’t recognize their face Said, this is my Fathers spread What have you done to His place
The crack of that bullwhip Sounded like a gun None wanted to fight They all were on the run
Matthew 21:13 And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.
I know I’ve been gone awhile But this an’t going to get it hoss Until Dad say’s different I’m still the Boss
When the dust died down He was still standing there Looking at all of us Said, This Ranch is for prayer

This ranch has a purpose That’s why He settled here If you’re not working for Him You need to pack your gear
Picking up the ranch sign He the nailed it back in place There on a tree It simply read Grace
Then one of them spoke up Said, we are here to buy and trade And there’s only one of you We’re really not afraid
The Boss then told us boys To this ranch I have the keys Every cowboy needs a place To spend some time on his knees

One Last (& most important) thought… Salvation is a gift and a choice...... Read past issues of our Christian Cowboy Collection and the Christian Barrel Racer’s Newsletter at the website below!
Jesus died on the cross as the final sacrifice for our sins. He was resurrected on the 3rd day and he defeated death and Satan for us. All we have to do is believe that He beat death, acknowledge it with our words and accept Him as our personal savior. That’s when the rebirth happens and we are changed! He then promises us eternal life with Him in Heaven! You can’t earn your way into Heaven; you have to accept His gift of salvation. So many people think they “aren’t good enough” to get to Heaven… But… Salvation is a GIFT from God and you don’t earn a gift. Gifts are given to you and for the gift to be yours, you have to accept it. All we have to do is accept this wonderful gift. I know I have…won’t you?
But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. Romans 5:15 For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Romans 10: 9-10

ITOBA TOBA to Hold Ownership Seminar at Keeneland on April 18 LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (TOBA) will hold a Thoroughbred Ownership Seminar on Friday, April 18, 2014 at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Ky. The seminar, sponsored by Blood-Horse Publications, will feature approaches to success, options for acquiring horses and resources for Thoroughbred owners. Attendees will have the opportunity to watch the morning workouts, participate in a new “virtual ownership” session on the backstretch, and wrap up the event with an afternoon of racing. The seminar will also be available as a webcast. The agenda will soon be available at www.toba.org. TOBA’s seminars and clinics are held throughout the country each year; the complete schedule can be viewed at www.toba.org. These educational events are informative for both new and current Thoroughbred owners and breeders. TOBA members receive a discounted rate for each clinic and non-members can join TOBA today. TOBA, based in Lexington, Ky., was formed in 1961 and is a national trade organization of leading Thoroughbred breeders and owners. TOBA’s mission is to “improve the economics, integrity and pleasure of the sport on behalf of Thoroughbred owners and breeders.” Projects managed by TOBA include the American Graded Stakes Committee, Claiming Crown, Ownership Seminars, Ownerview.com and the Sales Integrity Program. TOBA provides international representation for U.S. owners and breeders on the International Grading and Race Planning Advisory Committee, International Cataloguing Standards Committee and International Breeders Federation. Thoroughbred Charities of America (TCA) is the charitable arm of TOBA. TOBA is the owner of The Blood-Horse Inc., and is represented on the Board of Directors of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association and the Racing Medication and Testing Consortium as founding members.
Welfare and Safety of the Racehorse Summit V Scheduled for July 8-9, 2014, at Keeneland The Jockey Club and Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation today announced that the fifth Welfare and Safety of the Racehorse Summit will be held Tuesday, July 8, and Wednesday, July 9, 2014, in Lexington, Ky. Once again, the summit will be underwritten and coordinated by The Jockey Club and Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation and hosted by the Keeneland Association. The two-day workshop brings together a wide cross-section of the breeding, racing and veterinary communities. “We owe it to our athletes, both equine and human, to do all we can to ensure their safety and convening this summit to exchange ideas and develop new programs is one of the best ways we can do that,” said Edward L. Bowen, president, Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation. The summit will be held in the Keeneland sales pavilion and it is open to the public; a live webcast will also be available. “The safety and welfare of our athletes is unquestionably priority No. 1,”

said Keeneland President & CEO Bill Thomason. “Keeneland is proud to host this summit which has, in its brief history, a proven track record of successfully advancing initiatives that are vital to the integrity and health of racing.” A formal agenda and a list of speakers will be announced at a later date. Among the major accomplishments that have evolved from the previous four summits are the Equine Injury Database; the Jockey Injury Database; the Racing Surfaces Testing Laboratory, which provides science-based testing of racing surfaces to enhance safety for horse and rider; a uniform trainer test and study guide; the publication of stallion durability statistics; and the movement by state racing commissions to create regulations that void the claim of horses suffering fatalities during the conduct of the race. Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation is traditionally the nation’s leading source of private funding for equine medical research that benefits all breeds of horses. Since 1983, the foundation has provided approximately $19.9 million for 299 specific projects at 40 universities. Additional information about the foundation is available at grayson-jockeyclub.org.
Thoroughbred Incentive Program Announces 2013 Performance Awards Winners The Jockey Club Thoroughbred Incentive Program (T.I.P.), which encourages the retraining of Thoroughbreds into other disciplines upon completion of careers in racing or breeding, today announced the winners and other placings from its 2013 performance awards pilot program. The performance awards recognize Thoroughbreds accumulating the most points at all horse shows in each of the award categories and divisions throughout the year. “We had an excellent response to the pilot program,” said Kristin Leshney, legal associate for The Jockey Club and the administrator of T.I.P. “We received 150 applications representing 78 Thoroughbreds, and 25 states and Ontario.” Because the pilot program was so successful, performance awards will be available once again in 2014 and will include shows from December 1, 2013, through November 30, 2014. Category winners in 2014 will receive a ribbon and leather lead shank and division winners will receive a ribbon and T.I.P. customized lead rope. The 2014 performance award information will be collected online through the

The complete list of winners can be found at the bottom of the release. Created and announced in October 2011, T.I.P. recognizes and rewards the versatility of the Thoroughbred through sponsorship of Thoroughbred classes and high point awards at sanctioned horse shows. with our favorite Jack Russel Terrier... Bella &
Breaking Records I heard my people talking the other day about and old saying. It has something to do with the month of March coming in like a lion and going out like a lamb, or vice versa - that is Latin for the reverse - so in like a lamb and out like a lion. (French now Latin....are you impressed with all of my culture yet?) Anyway, I didn’t understand the whole idea of the lion vs lamb thing, but I don’t think we are adding to the menagerie (there I go again) of creatures here at the farm. I think it has something to do with the weather.....and I am assuming here, but I’m thinking the lion brings more unpleasant weather than the lamb and one comes at the first of the month, the other at the end. The people are leaning towards wanting the lion to show up first and just getting the worst of it over with. I can’t say as I blame them....I mean, we have had the most snowy winter ever recorded and as I am writing this we are due
Miss Maybelline)
to have more snow in the next few days. Not to mention, it has been record breaking COLD. I’m not sure that those are the kind of records I want to be a part of breaking. “Most Cheeseburgers Eaten By A Jack Russel” or “Jack Russel Terrier Wins Best Of Show Record Number Of Times” seem to be more up my alley. Speaking of breaking records. Did you watch the Winter Olympics? There were all kinds of records being broken over there in Sochi, Russia. The United States did very well and I was entertained by my people getting excited and yelling for them to “ski faster, jump higher and play harder.” Even though all of the athletes were really good, I have to admit that my favorite story was about the US Olympians that decided to help with the stray dogs of Sochi.
I watched a little on TV about how there are lots of dogs in Sochi that don’t have homes (I heard that happens here in the US too), the dogs there depend on the people of the city to throw them scraps. I can’t imagine what life would be like without my people and a warm place to sleep. (Not to mention the food.) Sorry to be a “Debbie Downer,” that brings up my public service announcement for the month: “Spay and neuter your pets.” Breaking records - still taking care of business in record time....until that lamb shows up!
