LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
W
hat a whirlwind of a month! It seems like I just wrote the April letter...where does the time go? Things are very busy here at the Ranch with breeding season in full swing. Several extra horses in the barn and all the turn out lots are flooded. I am sure many of our readers can relate to that scenario this month. The weather has not cooperated much the past few weeks and although we are swimming here in Indiana, I feel for our western neighbors dealing with a drought who could use the rain...from one extreme to the other. We did manage to make it to a barrel race last month...and it was one of those trips that I’ll remember and tell stories about. My kids tried out new mounts for the year....that was the best part of the trip. We dealt with the rain all day long and then the barrels decided that they didn’t like me that day (or maybe I am a little off on my timing...lol!) Needless to say, not in the money. The trip home iced the cake, so to speak. To make a long, and somewhat funny story short (ask me about it sometime), we blew out a tire on the trailer and had left the jack in the other trailer. (There’s an article for the future.) We arrived safely home shortly before the sun came up and by the next weekend we were ready to go again.
This month you’ll notice that we have expanded our center section to include a monthly “Events Section.” We hope this will make it easier to locate a showbill or flyer for our readers. Please encourage your show promoters to use The “Fast” Horse Resource to advertise their event. And be sure to check out www.thehorseresource.net and visit the calendar page to find your next destination. Until next month........ ....plan your show schedule.....load’em up and move’em out.......then count your blessings on horseback! (Just don’t forget the jack!!) God Bless and Ride Safe, Christa Conway
A Little “Barrel Talk”
More great suggestions and recipes found on Barrel Horse World’s Barrel Talk.....Enjoy! (Just remember - The Horse Resource is not endorsing these “remedies.” We recommend that you consult your veterinarian before using any home remedy on your horse.) *To remove manure stains*
1 bottle of rubbing alcohol 1 bottle of water 1/8 cup of GREEN Palmolive Dish Soap (HAS to be the GREEN one!!!!) Mix in a spray container -Spray on the manure stain spot then wipe with a damp well wrung out sponge. Rinse sponge clean and wipe again. The stain should come right out. If it is REALLY bad you might need to apply the remover once more. I made up this recipe after guessing what was in an expensive store product and we used this on two pure white geldings for years before their shows - it worked like magic! You must rinse your sponges nice and clean as you go though, a dirty sponge on a white spot will leave a yellow tinge!!
*Homemade Show Sheen Recipe*
1/4 (one quarter) cup hair conditioner 1/4 (one quarter) cup baby oil 2 tablespoons vinegar (to keep flies away, this is optional) 1/4 (one quarter) cup water Mix and use as you would any other store-bought spray.
*Homemade Fly Spray for Horses*
Mix equal parts of the following: Cider Vinegar Dawn Blue dish soap * Water Mix ingredients in a spray bottle. Shake well and use as you would any fly spray.
*Homemade Mane & Tail Detangler*
Calgon Bath Oil Beads (dry); Water Mix the Calgon with water - one part Calgon to three parts water. Store in a spray bottle. It will help recondition your horse’s mane and tail. It also works well on knots. Apply liberally and work the knot out with a comb or stiff brush.
*Horse Cookies*
1 cup Margarine 1 cup brown sugar 2 eggs 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 cup bran 1 tsp. Baking soda 1 cups quick-cooking oats 1 cup diced carrots 1 cup diced apples Cream margarine and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs. Combine flour, bran and baking soda, and blend into creamed mixture. Stir in oats, carrots and apples. Drop by spoonfuls onto un-greased baking sheets and bake in a moderate oven (350 F - 190 C) for 10 - 12 minutes, until lightly browned. This makes about 4-dozen cookies
*Faster Bathing Ideas* When I give my horses baths, I mix my shampoo w/ a little water in a big spray bottle. Then, after I wet them down, I take my spray bottle in one hand, and my soft rubber curry in the other (the pink soft Grooma works great). I can spray on the soap and scrub them all over in
Horseshoe H NT
record time without all the bending and soapy water running up my arms. Note: Do NOT spray the soap directly on their faces. When giving your horse a soap bath, rinsing with white vinegar will help to remove the soap. Vinegar will also serve as a fly repellent. Put half a cup of fabric softener and pine cleaner in a small bucket of hot water. Wring out a rub rag in this mixture and use it to remove dust, dirt and germs from the coat. This solution will also soften the coat and leave a great shine. Be very careful so not to get in eyes, ears, etc. You may want to test this on a small spot in case of irritation, but I have never had any problems with this. Equal parts vinegar and water will take out manure stains. It is VERY important for white & gray horses. A little baby oil in warm water is a good cleaner for the under tail area of a mare. It cleans them and softens the area. It is REALLY good for dirty mares.
*Saddle Rack Idea*
Use a five-gallon bucket for saddle racks. Take the handle off and nail them to the wall with a few nails on the inside of the bucket so the opening faces out. They keep the saddle in the correct position and the “cubby” inside makes a wonderful place to stash your grooming gear! Check out www.barrelhorseworld.com and visit the Barrel Talk page to find more home remedies and great ideas from fellow horse people!!

FROM THE COVER It is not too late to breed your next winner! Sargent Quarter Horses is proud to offer AQHA stallion La Jollaroid for the 2011 breeding season. La Jollaroid is a Grade 2 Stakes Winner with a speed index of 109 and earnings of $155,122. He is sired by Grade 1 stakes winning stallion, Streakin La Jolla, and out of the stakes winning mare Miss Dasheroid si106, a granddaughter of the great Hall of Fame sire Dash for Cash. This outstanding stallion has proved his speed and passed it on to his get. Entered into stud in 2007, La Jollaroid’s first foal crop has produced stand out performers Corona N Hearts si103 and Snow Forecast si99. La Jollaroid not only has speed but a good mind and conformation, he is also an AQHA halter point earner. “It is not everyday that a horse with this speed, conformation , disposition and Hall of Fame breeding comes along” said Bennie T. Sargent. “Because of his athletic ability, he is a great cross on performance bred mares to sire world class barrel and pole horses” said Sargent.
Look for La Jollaroid’s offspring to make an impact on the track and in the performance arena. His foals are eligible for the AQHA Incentive Fund, Kentucky Quarter Horse Breeders’ Incentive Fund, QHRAI Stallion Service Futurity and the Iowa Double Gold Futurity. The exceptional stallion is proudly owned by Jim and Marilyn Helzer and Les and Leah Horner. Visit www.sargentquarterhorses.com for more information on this outstanding stallion. Contact Bennie T. Sargent for multiple mare and performance discounts. Shipped semen and mare care available.

OVERCOMING CONTACT AT THE START, MIGHTY B VALIANT WINS REMINGTON PARK FUTURITY OKLAHOMA CITY - Blackwater Command ran his winning streak to two, scoring in Sunday’s $29,500 Mr Master Bug Handicap at Remington Park. He won the race for Oklahoma-bred 3-year-old colts and geldings by a nose over First Prize Stone.
Owned by Mike Vaughan of Norman, Okla. and trained by Eddie Willis, Blackwater Command was handled by Jimmy Brooks. The gelding rallied to gain the victory, staying just ahead of First Prize Stone who moved with him throughout the 350 yards. White Litenin, the 9-5 wagering favorite was neck behind the top pair in third. Blackwater Command covered the distance in :17.934 seconds over a fast track and paid $10 to win, $4.60 to place and $3.40 to show. First Prize Stone returned $3.60 to place and $2.80 to show. Owned by David Clonts of Broken Arrow, Okla. and trained by Guillermo Valdivia, Brimmers Motion rallied from well back to win by a halflength under Alex Baldillez. MT Rob This Corona was second, a head better than Fame Fatale.

OKLAHOMA CITY - Heavy favorite Mighty B Valiant had the bulk of the buzz heading into Saturday’s $780,000 Remington Park Futurity. He lived up to the hype by showing he could handle some adversity in winning the richest state-bred futurity in the sport.
Contested for the first time for eligible Oklahoma-breds, the Remington Park Futurity featured a quality field of 10 that qualified over two days, and 24 trials, the first weekend of April. Mighty B Valiant dominated his trial to win by 2-3/4 lengths in setting the fastest 330-yard time during the first evening of heats. In the final, the strapping 2-year-old colt had to work a little harder. Owned by the You and Me Partners of Lawton, Okla. and trained by Raymond Vargas, Mighty B Valiant left the starting gate and was immediately squeezed by rivals from both sides. Under jockey G.R. Carter, Mighty B Valiant had to get away from the contact and mount a rally having lost quite a bit of ground early to many foes. “He might be one of the best horses I’ve ever rode,” Carter noted. “He had the squeeze put on him leaving the gate and he came out of that. The fivehorse (Folly

Del Rey) must have left there getting it, he had the lead on us by probably a length but we just ran by him.” Finding his best stride with about 200 yards remaining, Mighty B Valiant began to consume ground in sweeping past those ahead of him, crossing the finish three-quarters of a length in front in :16.739 seconds on the fast track. Folly Del Rey ran a huge race at 49-1 odds to be second with Send Me A Candy Tree, the top qualifier from the second day of trials, running third a head behind the runner-up. BPs Jumpin Frisco was fourth after having the early lead at the start. The 1-2 wagering favorite, Mighty B Valiant paid $3 to win, $2.60 to place and $2.40 to show. Folly Del Rey paid $24.40 to place and $8.60 to show. Send Me A Candy Tree returned $3.60 to show.

At 5-1 odds, Cold Granite Stone returned $12.40 to win, $6.60 to place and $3.80 to show. Passion For Corona led from the start but could not hold off the winner, paying $10 to place and $7.60 to show. SM Chicksastreakin paid $9.60 to show. A colt by Granite Lake from the Skirt Chasin Alibi mare Hempen Chics Alibi, Cold Granite Stone won his sixth race from nine career attempts. The derby was his third victory at Remington Park and he made $112,000 in the process to push his overall earnings to $195,093. Bred in Oklahoma by Pompy Farm West LLC, Cold Granite Stone provided the first Remington Park Derby win to all of his connections.
$100,000 Remington Park Juvenile
Bred in Oklahoma by Homer Hill, Mighty B Valiant is a colt by Valiant Hero from the On A High mare Mighty B Doll. He is a perfect twofor-two and earned $312,000 for his Remington Park Futurity effort to move his overall bankroll to $320,784. Mighty B Valiant provided the You and Me Partners with their second Remington Park Futurity win, having scored in 2005 with Crater Lake. Vargas, a longtime assistant to legendary Jack Brooks and most recently American Quarter Horse Association Champion trainer Paul Jones, won his first Remington Park Futurity while Carter posted his fifth win in the race, adding to his previous triumphs in 1997, 2001, 2007 and 2009.
$280,000 Remington Park Derby
Cold Granite Stone was the much the best in winning the 400-yard event for 3-year-old Oklahoma-breds, after getting involved in a fivehorse tangle at the start and then firing a come-from-behind move to get up to win by a neck. Owned by Joe Hurdle of Sallisaw, Okla. and trained by his daughter Michelle Hurdle, Bryan Ernst had the call on Cold Granite Stone who won his fifth consecutive race dating to September last year. Because of the rough start, an objection was lodged against Cold Granite Stone by the trainer of Paintyourownwagon who started just outside the winner. After a lengthy review by the Oklahoma Horse Racing Commission Stewards, the objection was not allowed and Cold Granite Stone stood in the winner’s circle with his biggest career score. Cold Granite Stone caught Passion For Corona in the final strides to finish in :19.831 seconds. SM Chicksastreakin was a nose behind the runner-up in third with I Am The Hero another head back in fourth.

Owned by David Clonts of Broken Arrow, Okla. and trained by Guillermo Valdivia, Smokin Bye You was ridden to victory by Stormy Smith, covering the 330 yards in :16.690 seconds. Smokin Bye You left the starting gate at 7-1 odds and paid $17.40 to win, $7.60 to show and $6.60 to show. DM Strait Up was second and returned $5.80 to place and $4 to show. Wagon Empire was third and paid $6.60 to show. Smokin Bye You won his trial for the Remington Park Futurity on the first night of qualifying but didn’t make the top five to advance to the lucrative final. The score in the Juvenile was his second from three attempts this season, giving him another $40,820 to roll his young career earnings to $49,694. A gelded son of Sweet First Down from the Mr Eye Opener mare Eye My Alexis, Smokin Bye You was bred in Oklahoma by Clonts.

he QHRAI has made a huge splash for the second year in a row at the Hoosier Horse Fair. As sponsor of the West Pavilion Arena, the QHRAI hosted a booth in the West Pavilion with the prime goal to promote Quarter Horse racing in Indiana.
Top right: Dan Golando, also known as the “official bugler of the Q.H.R.A.I.” was a popular part of the QHRAI booth. People quickly learned that when they heard Dan perform the traditional “Call to Post” on his bugle, that an exciting activity with prize give-a-ways was about to start!! Inset: One of the most popular events in the booth were the “handicapping” contests where spectators chose a number of a horse from a 2010 stakes race. The person who chose the winning horse in the race received a gift package including a day at the races, a tour of the track backside, picnic lunch and pizza party on Quarter Horse day at Indiana Downs Saturday, July 2nd!!
Left: Q.H.R.A.I. was proud to have Rhonda Day Eq. D.T. participate for the second year discussing equine dentistry to many horse fair attendees. Friday - $500 Added
$10,000 Guaranteed
Just last year, Im Hannah Montana, was running IBRA futurities herself. She steadily placed in the 2D/3D at the IBRA Futurity in Murfreesboro, TN and then reappeared at Edinburg to blow past tough competition running second in the first go round, winning the second and earning 2nd place in the average topped just barely by Famous Silk Panties. Kelly proved she is bringing along a real Open horse winner, running two of the fastest times of the weekend in Friday and Saturday’s 4D Opens. Her 15.495 earned the pair $960 topping the likes of Walts Rock N Roll and Hoosier Fame. Kelly’s time sat Abi Ringer just right to win 1st and 2nd in the 2D for combined earnings of $1,260. KY natives Lauren Williams and Rodney B Readn lead the 3D with a 16.518 to win $480. A 17.534 would be good enough to bring in $240 for Bo and Cobie Ward.
Caleb Clingen
Kelly Pitts returned from Georgia for the weekend to make sure no one forgot who she was. Kelly has put down several winning runs in the pen aboard stand out gelding Tin Zan Man, but her rising star Im Hannah Montana stole the stage winning both Friday and Saturdays open classes to accumulate $1,299 in less than 31 seconds. Kelly’s 15.530 won the race by nearly 2 tenths on Friday night. KY member Will Bingham captured the 2D win aboard Miss Bebopping racking up 100pts towards year end awards as well as $254. A 16.531 by Pass the Flit was good enough to win the 3D for IN member Terri Harvey. Orphan Annie Frost found her home in the 4D running the right time of a 17.543.
Saturday - Futurity 1st Go Round
Long time attendee and IBRA member, Jhonda Cox made her presence known in the Futurity only 7 horses in, running a 16.165, making her very “Thankful of Hateful,” pulling in $823. Ms Famous Gal got her time in the spot late, taking Shannon Roberts to a 2D win and a $494 paycheck. Roger Grow and Mr. French Sugar stopped the clock at the right time to take the 3D win and $329.
Page 20
Youth - $500 Added
Once the Guaranteed wrapped up, the youth riders took stage to show the open riders what they have in store. Caleb Clingen had already run against the open riders and out ran most of them rolling over his 6th

Famous in his own right, Troy Crumrine took Delane to Fame to the 2D win with a 16.531 and $494. The 3D was lead by Jhonda Cox with a 16.920. Her 3D win in the second go combined with her 1st Go 1D win to lead the 2D in the average, totaling $1,810 for the pair. Ms. Famous Girl took Shannon Roberts to the 3D win in the average. Shannon accumulated over $1,100 in the futurity.

Masters - $500 Added
Now that the Youth had shown what they are bringing the Masters had their chance to show why they are called the Masters. A rollover by the Troy Crumrine, from the Open of a 15.606 proved he has mastered the game winning the 1D by well over a tenth and increase his earnings from the run to $903.00. Colette Warner hoped she could dial in on a check and she did riding Hope to a 2D win with a 16.627, earning $182. Darin Hornberger knew he could make some money aboard I Know U Know, who led him to the right time of a 17.641 and $121.
Sunday - Church Service
The Needhams started Sunday off right, leading the crowd in prayer and song. From familiar favorites, to new songs from their latest album “What a Difference,” the traveling family brought the crowd to applause as always and helped set them in the right direction for the remainder of the competition.
Futurity 2nd Go Round
With a run behind them, futurity jockeys mounted up their young horses a bit more tuned in. Louis Fincher improved the time of DM Streak A Boo, by over 4 tenths, winning the 2nd Go by nearly 2 tenths and
Sunday $1,000 Added Open
It was a successful mission for Shannon Roberts aboard Famous Mission to win Saturdays Open with the fastest time of the weekend with a 15.441 and $482. Jhonda Cox took home yet another check winning the 2D and $361 aboard Brother Rock. Troy Crumrine hauled off $241 with his Cash Truck, who won the 3D. Stinkin Firewater and Justin Bishop ran the right time of a 17.646 to capture the 4D win. After a long weekend of heavy competition contestants wrapped up and headed home many a little richer, with 144 checks cut for the weekend. The IBRA would like to thank everyone who attended and helped make the show a success, even though the temperature dropped coming into the weekend horses still shot through the gate giving it their all. Special thanks to Dennis Cherry and the folks at Circle G for hosting the event all these years. With the 2nd Annual Match race just around the corner the IBRA hopes to see everyone at Roberts Arena in June for another fun show.

Rain, Rain, GO AWAY!!
From what I hear, the weather has been extreme in more places than where I live, but all I can testify to from first hand experience is that our weather has been - wet, wet wet!! I cannot remember the last day that we had without rain - as I am typing, the rain is still falling. Our pastures are all sopping wet and there is water standing everywhere around the ranch. The only good thing is that it has been a steady rain so far, no torrential downpours.... yet. I’m not sure what the weatherman has in store for us over the next few days....I just heard the word rain alot when the people had him on the TV. Hopefully I don’t float away before next month’s deadline comes around. As for the other indoor doggie around here (aka “Princess Annabelle of Poo” - I kind of like that new nickname!!), she hasn’t been out much. She doesn’t do well when the ground is sopping wet. You see, her
belly almost drags the ground and it just stays wet the whole time she is outdoors. Imagine people fingers after staying in the bathtub for too long and then you can imagine what her belly is like after too long in the wet grass. Yeah, I have to admit, I kind of feel for her...but don’t tell. Since the Princess has been spending most of her time on the couch and the neighbor dog, Duke, hasn’t crossed the muddy field to visit, I have got to spend a little more time with the outside dogs that live here. (In case you don’t remember, there are three.) I thought I’d introduce them this month. The outside gang consists of two sisters - Freckles and Puddles. Their names kind of tell a little about them. Freckles has, well, freckles on her face. She has OCD, if dogs can have that. She loves golf balls and is a golfers dream....she will fetch them all day long! Her sister, who looks just like her was to be named Speckles - (sometimes I don’t understand the people’s sense of humor...) but she had a couple accidents as a pup and the rest is history for Puddles. Puddles has become my mousing partner. We have spent a lot of time mastering the art of tag-team mousing. I won’t go into detail here....but we do it well. The third of the trio is named Shep. He is the only “boy” dog that lives here on the ranch and he was quite the introvert when he first showed up. He has gradually came out of his shell and likes to think he is a ladies man although the only competition he gets is an occasional challenge from the portly Duke of next door. The outside gang really isn’t that bad, I just hate it when they want to play and they are soaking wet, which seems to be constantly these days....

Joint Injections and Medications Used In the Equine Athlete Article By Dr. Steve Fisch, DVM Pictures provided by AVS Equine Hospital
We train them to handle well, load in a trailer and the list goes on and on. Finally the horse we raised or the horse we carefully picked out at a sale is ready to be put in training. We either do that ourselves or we do our research and find the best trainer we can and we map out a plan for our equine athlete’s career. He may be a racing quarter horse, a barrel horse or any type of horse that competes by using his athleticism. Whatever his job, we want him to have every edge to be able to do that job to the best of his ability.
Excellent diagnostics, including a thorough physical examination, are critical to treating and preventing lameness versus random treatments done without any scientific data.
L
ast year you bought that special mare and bred her to that special stallion and after almost a year of waiting and making sure the mare had every nutritional and environmental advantage available to her, the time for the foal’s birth is here. You made sure the mare got all her pre-foaling vaccinations four to six weeks before her due date and you have made all the correct decisions in this process so far. Now you have to decide whether or not to let the mare take care of the birthing process on her own or do you make sure someone is with her when she foals? We all want our horses to perform at the best of their ability and we try to give them every opportunity to do just that. We breed the best mare we possibly can to the best stallion we can find and afford and hope that the resulting foal is better than either parent. Then we feed the new foal so that it gets all the nutritional advantages possible. We trim their feet once a month from the time they are a month old so that their legs can grow straight and strong.
Page 26
Once he is in training an owner has many decisions to make that concern his equine athlete’s health. Those decisions need to be made very objectively since they are not only important to the health and soundness of the horse, they are also important to the health and soundness of the owner’s individual business and they are important to the health and welfare of the racing, barrel racing and other using horse industries as a whole. These decisions include joint injections, supplements and a vast array of products that are advertised with claims to enhance the horse’s performance. All of the products and medications cost money. The person who is eventually responsible for paying for these products and medications is the owner. The owner is the “golden goose” of each industry. Without the owner, there is no need for the trainer, farrier, veterinarian or any of the products. Therefore all eyes need to be upon the owner. The horse’s health and well being should always be considered first and foremost but the owner should be next in line. There are probably a lot of horses treated by well meaning people but the reasons for the how’s and whys of treatment are not based on science and research. They are based on anything from tradition to the latest and greatest new thing advertised on face book. It is a common practice in racing circles to inject several of a horse’s joints before each race. Many horse’s are injected before time trails and then again within two weeks when they are scheduled to race in the finals.
Joint injections should be given as the result of a diagnosis which is derived from the information gathered during a lameness examination. The lameness examination may include good quality x-rays and other diagnostic modalities such as ultrasound which reinforce the diagnosis and treatment of a lameness or unsoundness. They should not be given because it is the fashionable thing to do or because the winner of a big race had his hocks, stifles and feet injected and therefore it is surmised that is what every other horse should have done before they race also. It probably does not need to be done twice within a few weeks. Injecting a joint twice in two weeks between races is like changing the oil in your car after driving it a few hundred miles. If a joint needs to be injected every couple of weeks, then the horse really probably needs an extended rest period. Some owners are in the sport of horse racing, barrel racing or other competitive equine sport for a hobby or entertainment while others are in the sport as a business. Either way, the owner and trainer need to educate themselves about the pathophysiology of lameness. If everyone is educated about what they are doing, wise decisions will be made and the economy of the sport will remain intact. If owning a horse becomes a loosing proposition, the owners will not hang around for long unless there is some other factor offsetting the economic losses. Treatment choices should not be based on fear of loosing a competition or on tradition. Treatment choices should be based on scientific facts. Every owner and trainer does not need to learn and is not expected to learn the depth of knowledge that an equine veterinarian has regarding lameness. However if they don’t go to the trouble to learn the basics, they at least need to put their horses in the hands of someone who has. The old saying “a little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing” is true but no knowledge is usually much worse. Our horses give their best when we compete with them and they deserve that the people in charge of them spend the time to truly learn about different disease processes and their treatments and preventions. Once the decision has been made to inject
Diagnostic modalities, such as ultrasound, reinforce the diagnosis and treatment of a lameness or unsoundness.
a joint then another decision comes to the forefront. What is the best product to inject the joint with? What product will result in the healthiest joint and what product is considering the long term soundness of the horse. Most joints that need to be injected have some form or grade of osteoarthritis. These joints keep themselves healthy by having their own joint capsules and synovial membranes produce hyaluronate. Hyaluronate is a natural lubricate in everyone’s body that is in all parts of the body that are lubricated. The joint is no different and produces it own hyaluronate when the joint is healthy. If the joint capsule or synovial membrane has been traumatized in some way and is inflamed, the joint ceases producing sufficient hyaluronate to effectively lubricate the joint. This is when a joint needs to be injected. There are several forms of hyaluronate to choose from when deciding to inject the joint. The best products have a high molecular weight. They are like using higher quality motor oil versus lower quality motor oil in your car. They last longer and protect the joint better than using a hyaluronate product that has a lower molecular weight. Many times a steroid is also injected into the joint. All steroids have an anti-inflammatory effect on the joint but in the long run some steroids have a deleterious effect on the joint cartilage. The steroids with the long term negative effects tend to have longer lasting anti-inflammatory
Ask The Vet
properties in the joint but there are better choices in steroids most of the time. Some steroids such as triamcimilone are actually “chondroprotective” and not only have an anti-inflammatory but they also protect the joint. Sometimes the choice of steroid may be dictated by the withdrawal periods established by the governing body of the sport. If that is the case, it is best to try to think ahead and if possible use the chondroprotective steroid enough days in advance of the race or event. Joint injections are an important part of keeping our equine athletes sound and performing to the best of their ability. They are good when used correctly. There is actually nothing negative about injecting a joint when it is done for the right reasons. Routine is not a good reason and it is an expensive reason. A good diagnosis is a good reason and it is a cost effective reason. I have my own shoulder injected on a periodic basis. Part of the reason I have it injected is because it hurts if I don’t. The other reason I have it injected it to further protect the joint cartilage and keep it lubricated. But there was a diagnosis that caused my shoulder to be injected. It was not a matter of routine. The responsibility to treat our horses judiciously with injections and other medications lies with everyone involved including the owner, trainer and equine veterinarian. Many owners and trainers do not want a diagnosis. They tell the
veterinarian what to inject or how to treat. They also let it be known that if a particular veterinarian will not do as they say they will find one who will. This is where the gray zones exist and why everyone looses. The treatment needs to be a well thought out plan that includes the horse, owner, trainer and the veterinarian with everyone being given respect for their individual knowledge. If everyone works together and uses science and experience to base their decisions on, the individual horse and the racing industry will be better off in the long run. A thorough physical exam with at least the veterinarian and trainer involved will tell everyone if a certain treatment needs to be given. If a thorough exam is not given to the horse, subtle problems can be missed and the results can be disastrous. If the horse needs to have diagnostic nerve blocks, x-rays or ultrasound to diagnose a problem then do them. If the diagnostics are done up front versus trying this and then that as a way to diagnose a problem, the horse and everyone involved with him will usually save a lot of time and money and the horse will be better served. If in all cases we do what is best for the individual horse, we will be doing what is best for the horse industry and everyone involved in the horse industry both in the short term and in years to come. We have been blessed to work in a great industry that revolves around what most of us would do for fun. Our industry owes it to the horse and to itself to think long term. Stephen D. Cowboy Mounted Shooting

Raw Horsepower - Hard Ridin’ - Straight Shootin’ 1st Ohio Cowboy Mounted Shooters Just got back from the Cowboy Mounted National Championships, held in Tunica, Mississippi, a full week of shooting from horseback, can’t get any better then that! The Nationals included entries from as far away as Idaho and California! The Midwest Region was well represented with Cowboys and Cowgirls from Ohio, Indiana and Illinois. Despite the weather, tornados all around us and some wicked lightening/thunder storms, it was a history making event. The very first CMSA/AQHA Special Event was held, a total of 51 registered quarter horses participated in the Novice Amateur, Select Amateur, Amateur and Open classes of Cowboy Mounted Shooting. In fact, the Select Amateur class was won by Indiana’s own, Rick Deckena riding Bar None Rebel Ruler, a member of the Indiana Mounted Regulators. The next CMSA/AQHA Special Event will be in Guthrie, Oklahoma at the Lazy E Arena in June. CMSA and AQHA are also teaming up for “BATTLE In The SADDLE” to be held in Oklahoma City, July 5-9th at State Fair Park. Mounted shooters will battle entries in Working Cow Horse, Ranch Remuda, Cutting, Versatility Ranch Horse, Ropers and Barrel Racers for the top spot at the Great American Western Horse Showdown! Cowboy Mounted Shooters will be competing for $10,000 in prize monies! NEW CLUB in the Midwest Region, Kentucky Cowboy Mounted Shooters! These new shooters just became an official organization in 2011! A new shooter clinic is scheduled for May 7th, hosted by KCMS, details are available at their web site. 1st Ohio is preparing for their first outdoor shoot in 2011, the Gymkhana Arena in Miamitown, Ohio will be the hot spot. Memorial Day weekend’s schedule will include a “New Shooter/New Horse” clinic on Friday evening, a DWPQ (double world point qualifier) 4 stage match Saturday, and a DWPQ 4 stage match Sunday following Cowboy Church. If your interested in trying Mounted Shooting this is a great time to give it a “shot”, even if you don’t have all the equipment needed, load up ole’mud ball and head on over to the arena. There will be a clinic fee for you and your horse to participate, however spectators are always free! For details check out www.1stohio.com Cowboy Mounted Shooting is the most fun you will ever have on horseback! If your interested in watching or participating, check out our schedule on the web site www.1stohio.com or call me 513 479-5984. Ride fast, shoot straight and have fun! Indiana Rough Riders
CLUB NEWS
Howdy everyone! The days are getting longer, the weather is getting warmer and when I curry my horse the barn floor looks like a shag rug. All this is a sure sign that spring is here and summer is just around the corner. Another sign of spring is looking forward to attending the Hoosier Horse Fair in Indianapolis, IN. This year eighteen Cowboy Mounted Shooters, from the Indiana Rough Riders and Indiana Mounted Regulators, were riding hard and shooting fast to put on one of the best shooting demos ever, according to HHF personnel. Demonstrations in the Pepsi Coliseum and the outdoor arena pulled large crowds of spectators cheering for the Cowboys and Cowgirls as they demonstrated their Cowboy Mounted Shooting skills. New this year were lectures on “Introducing you and Your Horse to Cowboy Mounted shooting” presented by myself and Terry Martin. The lectures also brought in large crowds as we presented information on what it takes to get started in the sport.

CMSA News
A special treat this year was Ken McNabb joining us. Ken is a well known horse trainer and host of RFD TV’s popular “Discovering the Horseman Within”. Ken was able to participate in two of our demos and said that “Cowboy Mounted Shooting was one of the funnest things he had done on horseback”. I had the opportunity to spend quite a bit of time with Ken and answer his many questions about Cowboy Mounted Shooting. Ken is a true Cowboy in every sense of the word and it was an honor to work with him.

Many thanks to the Indiana Mounted Regulators for setting up the CMSA boot at the HHF. The booth was located in the South Pavilion and had a very professional look with the photos and flat screen TV playing videos of CMSA shooters. Great job IMR members!!!!!!!

Many visitors also stopped by the CMSA stalls to look at the horses and read each horse’s biography. The end of the stalls was decorated in a rustic Blacksmith/Livery Stable theme. It was a popular place for visitors to stop and pose for photos in front of the hitching rail and talk cowboy with us. We seen a lot of new faces and made a lot of new friends. Can’t wait until next year.
NEW SHOOTERS CLINIC
On April 9th we hosted our new shooters clinic which brought in 18 new shooters. It was an all day affair starting with introducing the new shooters to different styles of guns and holsters, then a gun safety class for all new participants. After the safety class we took a break for a delicious lunch of chili and hot dogs provided by IRR members. After lunch we moved on to training the new horses to gun fire. By the end of the day all 18 shooters had a chance to shoot several stages from their horse. Many thanks to all who participated and we hope to see you riding hard and shooting fast with us in the near future! That’s it until next month. God Bless and keep those cylinders spinning. It’s Prom-Time.... Cowboy Style.....!!
Hi!!!!!
Spring is here!! ( I Hope)!!
The last month was really quite busy for me. I did get to go to a horse show.... finally!! We went to Cloverdale and it was great getting to show. I won the barrel race, which made it even better! Florida was my destination for Spring Break with the family and we all had a nice time. I took a buddy with me and we went to Daytona Beach for a couple days, we saw some really nice scenery while we were there. I got to go to a couple of horse shows while I was in Florids and really enjoyed the 80 degree weather. Sorry to rub it in. Last week I had my Senior Prom. I’ve included some pictures of me, my date (Savannah LeMay) and a couple good friends ( Zack Powell and Anthony Lane.) We had a really good time, Joe even let me drive the Freightliner. I laid on the horn pulling into prom... that gave a few jumps! I am now ready to enjoy the warm weather and show some horses!!!!

Danielle Nicole Haag This month I got a little different perspective than I am used to......instead of a barrel racer, I interviewed a Western Pleasure and Hunter Under Saddle competitor.
Name: Danielle Nicole Haag Age: 19 Hometown: Bright, Indiana Parents: Sheryl Haag and the Late Robbie Haag School: Indiana Vocational Technical College for a degree in Business Hobbies: Horses and riding quads How old were you when you first started riding? Two Years Old. I got a minature horse at 18 months. Who taught you to ride? Andy Allen, she’s also my role model. How many horses do you own? Two Quarter Horses. Rx Zippo (Rex), who is a sorrel gelding and is 17 years old and Bring Me the Goods (Burt), who is a nine year old bay gelding. What do you do to practice for western pleasure? For both Western Pleasure and Hunter Under Saddle, I do alot of figure eights. For Western Pleasure I also do alot of bend and flex. How often do you groom your horse? I groom them three days a week, and if I am showing early in the spring I keep them under lights to shed out early. Before going to a show what do you do? I clean all equipment, wash fake tails, clip horses, bathe and band mane. How long does it take you to band mane? Usually about one hour. How much does a fake tail cost? $150 and up. You shine your equipment? Yes, before every show. When you get to the show what do you do?
Page 41
I take off sleezy and blanket, lunge horses, put fake tails on, put show sheen on horses and black their feet. What about your wardrobe for showing? I wear chaps and they cost $300 and up, (show) shirt $200 and up and show pants $50.00 and up and my hat $200.00 and up. For my hunt seat equipment I have to have a english saddle, pad, and bridle. I also wear a helmet and ride in breeches when I show (Hunter Under Saddle.) When buying a Pleasure Horse or Hunter Under Saddle Horse, what do you look for? I look for soundness, a good mind and how tall they are for Hunter Under Saddle. Do you show at the Quarter Horse Congress? Yes, I have and plan on returning again. I would love to make finals at Congress.
The Congress and AQHA World are very elite for me. When barrel racing we run against a clock how does this differ from judges? Judging is very opinionated. If there was a way, I would prefer to be against a clock. Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Married and showing the AQHA circuit. Thank you, Danielle, but I am glad I barrel race. ....Banding a mane for one hour? Wow!! Don’t mean to cut this short but I have mowing to do and horses to ride...
Clint is a 17 year old junior he is enrolled in Abeka Academy homeschool. His parents are Terrie VanVolkenburgh and respectively Joe Trentman. He has grown up in the horse world, both parents have rode almost all their life...Clint's grandfather as some of you may remember was the late Terry VanVolkenburgh, who would run up and down the fences when his daughters would run barrels. Clint began barrel racing at the age of 4 with a pony, then went on to particpate in Jr. Rodeo and his favorite event was the sheep riding, had to believe he is now a barrel racer. He has won the Ohio Youth NBHA and Indiana Youth and Open NBHA , he has also won the congress youth barrel four times, and was runner up in the Congress Sweepstakes, placed at Josey Jr. world numerous times, and won the NBHA Youth World 1d in 2006. He loves to barrel race and is now trying his hand at the futurities. In Clint's spare time he mows grass for a part time job and is also very active in his church where he and his cousins are bible school helpers. Clint also volunteers one day a week at a school in Cincinatti where he spends time tutoring other kids in reading.
See ya down the road,
Clint

There is one thing in a dream you should have is faith…..You should ALWAYS have God inside your heart. Your dreams and goals do not become a reality unless you take action. I know that I have decided to take a path in life that I plan to put a 100% of my heart in to it, because I know that God will be with me the whole way….I have no fear, I just know that when you are doing something in life that you absolutely love so much and you leave your mark….that is when you know that you have met your goal!
Hello to everyone! I have wanted to write something on Dreams and Goals for a while but just didn’t really have the right mind set to do it. I feel like it’s the right time to do it! This goes out to all those Barrel Racers that have a Dream and a Goal to make it to the top! Every barrel racer gets nervous before they run…..I know! I get nervous….and if you don’t get that way….hang your spurs up because you have lost the fun. I take my hat off before every run….I say my prayer to God, please watch over me and Classy and keep us safe with a good clean run, Thank You Amen. I know that when I am at a rodeo walking my horse waiting patiently for them to call my name…my hearts beating so hard, along with my horses heart, we nervously wait. Then they call my name, I give my horse a kiss and say lets do it! We run and make a good clean run as we pass the timer…I thank God for keeping us safe. There is a road of life we travel on full of dreams and goals we all set. Some people just dream it and some set out the goal to fulfill their dreams….You may not totally fill those goals but if you put 100% of your heart in to it, you will make it real!
The greatest feeling in the world is to have your passions in line with your purpose, goals and dreams you are working towards, waking up every day excited about what the future may bring. Life is full of surprises and don’t be surprised when you run past that timer at a big rodeo or a horse show and the announcer says, “that is the new time to beat” or “and there is your new leader”. Now that my friend is a feeling that you can’t explain unless you have been there! You just have to experience it! I can tell you….ITS AWESOME!!! Just remember in barrel racing….there is 1 dream to fulfill, but it takes 2 hearts to get there….You and Your horse. Just believe in yourself and have faith and you can accomplish anything you set out to do. Kendra Gilbreath grew up showing cattle and sheep and eventually made her way into the rodeo arena as a barrel racer. She is married to her husband, Steve, and they have one son, Kolton. Kendra has worked in the Western Retail Business for most of her adult life and enjoys keeping with the hottest styles in western wear. She is currently a Manager and a Buyer for Cowpokes Work and Western Store in Anderson, IN and helps in keeping the hottest trends and styles in clothing, boots and western wear on the store showroom floor.

Let’s Hear it for the Indiana Cinch Division Team! The Indiana Cinch Division Team made the trip to Greenville, KY on March 26th and 27th, proudly bringing home an overall second place finish at the Quad State Rodeo. The ever supportive friends and parents of the Indiana Cinch Division cheering section once again claimed the first place title for being loud and proud! Congratulations to all of the Team Members for such a great rodeo! You all make us proud of you both inside and outside the arena!

During the first performance on Saturday, Jessie Hoagland outran all the other girls with a 14.587 to start gathering the points for Team Indiana. Jessie also ended up second in Girls Breakaway Roping. Kyle Mackey added more points to the bottom line with a 4.240 in Boys Breakaway Roping. In Boys Goat Tying, five members of the Indiana Team placed in the Top 10. Lane McPheeters got it started with an 11.252 and Zach Hunter, Strand Barricklow, Jordan Banta and Baryton Deweese followed suit to bring in the top ten finishes. In the Boys Tie Down Roping, Strand Barricklow and Lane McPheeters brought home first and second. On Saturday, the bulls scored more points than the cowboys when they prevented any of the contestants from the four teams to make a qualified ride. In Girls Goat Tying, Brianna Belden and Jessie Hoagland finished in the top ten. Sydney Hurley and Addie Keller also added to Team Indiana’s points with top ten finishes in Pole Bending. In the Ribbon Roping, Elite and Academic Team Members, Strand Barricklow and Jessie Hoagland ran a 13.173 to grab first place and were joined by Casey Coll/Addie Keller, Lane McPheeters/Anna Dietrich and Tucker Whitten/Brianna Belden as they earned points with their top ten placings. The Indiana Chute Doggers took

IJRA News home half of the top ten placings with Lane McPheeters winning it with a 2.8 and team members Zach Hunter, Jordan Banta, Strand Barricklow and Jacob Rorig making sure everyone knew that Indiana was in town. Sunday morning brought the second performance and the opportunity for Team Indiana to show what they were made of. In the Boys Breakaway Roping, Tucker Whitten, Michael Shreeve and Brayton Deweese did a great job in placing in the top ten. The Indiana Team controlled the Boys Goat Tying as Strand Barricklow’s 11.950 held the first place spot and team members, Dylan Watson, Zach Hunter, Brayton Deweese, Tucker Whitten and Jordan Banta also ended up in the top ten. The Boys Goat Tying claimed 6 of the top ten spots. Great job guys! Lane McPheeters had the only catch Sunday in the Boys Tie Down roping. The calves must have been talking to the bulls on Saturday night! The bulls dominated again on Sunday, leaving every cowboy headed home without a score. The Girls Goat Tying had point placing times from
Anna Dietrich, Jessie Hoagland and Brianna Belden. Anna and Jessie also added points to Team Indiana’s score with placings in Pole Bending. The three Ribbon Roping teams of Zach Hunter/Sydney Hurley, Dylan Watson/Macy Sutkkokwski and Jordan Banta/Lois Thomas also brought in points as they crossed the finish line on Sunday. The team of Tucker Whitten and Trevor Colby made sure that Indiana was represented in the Team Roping. The Chute Doggers dominated on Sunday as Lane McPheeters’ 3.634 kicked off the Indiana placings. Fellow Chute Doggers – Gary Hook, Gavin McGary, Michael Shreeve, Kyle Mackey and Zach Hunter – also placed in the top ten. Way to go! IJRA is raffling off the opportunity to win a Powder Creek Round Pen or $500 again this year. The winning ticket will be drawn at the IJRA State Finals in August. Tickets are $5 each or 5 for $20. BLU HEALER The Lord looked down on Blu A dirty sinful man Said Blu, saddle up My Paw has a plan
You’re walk a’int that strong Cause you were just reborn But when Paw is finished You’ll be sharp as a thorn
You’re the one he’s picked No other cowboy will do The herd is a bit wild They’ll be just right for you
Yep you’re still on milk But Paw will build you up You’ll be after the herd Like a blue-heeler pup
Paw said not to worry He knows what you need Yep you’re rough as a cactus And tough as a tumbleweed
At first folks will doubt Because at times you’ll fail But you follow my Paw And stay on the trail
Paw sees your heart And he holds your soul He knows you’re a new hand Kind`a like a suckling foal
Yep you’ll get kicked But just stay on the herd Your bite will keep’em gathered Cause it’ll be Paw’s word
The herd is runnin` wild But they’ll listen to you Tell`em about the healer That’s why Paw picked you, Blu 1 Samuel 16:7 But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.

Are You Hungry? These people met under those conditions for hours upon end and begged this teacher to come back daily until he had went through every book in the bible....from daylight til dark, they were being fed. They were risking everything, their families, their livlihood, even their own lives to make it to these meetings. Can you imagine? I am guilty of not making it to church because of some pretty pitiful reasons....and this book reminded me that there are people in this world who are “hungry enough” that they are willing to risk their lives to make it to a dark little room in order to attend a secret meeting to be fed by God’s word.
I
started reading a book this past week and it sure had me thinking. I only read the first chapter and was feeling very much like I take my privileges for granted. Living here in the US, we tend to forget that there are still places in this world where people are killed or tortured for reading the bible or professing to be a Christian.
One of the other points this book made also had me thinking....if I had to attend a meeting like that one in order to learn more about Jesus and to read my bible......with no music, no comfy seats, no air conditioning (or heat), with no worship team or choir.....would I still be hungry enough to go? I like to think that put in some extreme conditions that I would keep God first...but that’s something serious to think about. It’s easy for us to take things for granted, and I know I am as guilty as anyone. There are millions of people out there who are hungry for God’s word and can’t get to it....and we have it readily available and forget where we leave it from one Sunday to the next.
The part of this book that hit me so hard was when the author told of his visit to a country where it is illegal (punishable by extreme measures) to practice Christianity. He was there to teach. There were people who had snuck to a secret house to learn the bible and about Jesus and he was there to teach them. He goes on in detail about the conditions under which they meet. A small house, dimly lit, with few chairs and more people than can even comfortably stand. And they are HUNGRY.
I have just started this book and it has me hungry already! I am going to challenge myself (and you) to become hungry for God’s word. I want to be hungry enough to be “kicking the walls” like some of my horses do at feeding time. We should be willing to do whatever it takes to continually draw closer to Him.
These people are not hungry in the sense that they want food.... they are hungry for the Word of God - hungry to learn about a man called Jesus. You see they aren’t able to go to a church anytime they want and they haven’t been raised in a country were people can feely choose to follow this Jesus fellow. They are HUNGRY.
The name of the book is Radical and it is written by David Platt.

Matthew 5:6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
Until next month.... Get Hungry!!! Happy Trails & God Bless! Christa

Last & most important thought… Salvation is a gift and a choice...... Jesus died on the cross as the final sacrifice. When He was resurrected on the 3rd day, he defeated Satan for us. All we have to do is believe that He beat death and acknowledge it with our words. If we believe that and accept Him as our personal savior…we are promised eternal life with Him in Heaven. You can’t earn your way into Heaven; you have to believe your way there. So many people think they “aren’t good enough” to get to Heaven… But… Salvation is a GIFT from God and you don’t earn a gift. Gifts are something someone gives to you and for the gift to be yours, you have to accept it. All we have to do is accept that wonderful gift. I know I have…won’t you?

But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. Romans 5:15 For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Romans 10: 9-10

Mystery of the Month.... This month’s Mystery Cowboy is still very active in the horse industry. Most recently being seen in the winner’s circle at the race track, he was shown here at the Michigan Quarter Horse Breeder’s Futurity in approximately 1983. Most will recognize this gentelman’s name immediately from the well known horse related business that he has owned since 1984. Correctly identify our mystery to win your choice of a one year subscription to The Horse Resource, a “Horsey Hat” or a “Horsey-T.” Please send us your photos from the past....we’d like to use them in our Mystery of the Month. Horses, people, events, etc... Send via email to: thehorseresource@msn.com or mail to The Horse Resource 12601 S CR 200 W Muncie, IN 47302 We will return your original photos to you.
March’s Mystery a Tough One..... We’ve snuck a few more clues into the info below..... These pictures date back to the early 1960s and the young cowgirls are sisters, ages 4 and 6. Their mother sent these pictures in of these two cuties and their trick ponies. Read on to see if you can name these cowgirls and claim March’s prize. The sisters shown in our Mystery of the month were always performing tricks on their ponies. They also showed them in pony pleasure and the gaming classes. The competed in 4H and did very well. Each of the sisters went on to become barrel racers and eventually joined the NBHA which brought some winnings and championships along the way. One of the two sisters has since given up the barrel racing scene and drives a semi for a living. The other sister claimed the NBHA Senior 1D State title in 2010 in Indiana. (NOTE: INDIANA is her home state.) Their mother is involved in one of the longest running barrel racing futurities east of the Mississippi. Do you know this pair of cute little cowgirls?
We Have A Winner....
Congratulations to our April Mystery of the Month winner!! Natalie Merrill knew that our couple was Patty and Dick “Pappy” Cole. Natalie chose a “Horsey-T” as her prize. Congrats to Natalie. Bruce Corrall and Delmar Mongosa also knew our Mystery couple. Dick is no longer with us, but Patty lives in northern Indiana and has quite a talent for making some great western and show shirts (as well as other goodies!) You can learn more about Patty and see some of her creations on her website. Visit her online at www.showcaseshirts.com. Natalie also knew that the horses were L to R: “Cookie,” “Doc,” “Max” and “Will.” Bruce Corrall noted that in the background was his wife, Ruth, with their good horse “Jack.”
Keep sending us those photos!! Send via email to thehorseresource@msn.com or mail to 12601 S CR 200 W Muncie, IN 47302 Page 59
