LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

W

ell, it’s finally here. Show season is now in full swing! If you haven’t made it to a horse event by now, consider yourself behind. (I hope I can say that by the middle of May I have been to a barrel race!) I can at least say that I have been on a horse at a horse event. I was honored to be asked to shoot with the Cowboy Mounted Shooters of the CMSA during their Saturday demonstration at the Hoosier Horse Fair. Thanks to Bryan and Kathy McDonald (and a couple other CMSA members) for supplying the horse and gear! What a great time! I was so afraid I’d make a fool of myself in front of everyone, but it turns out that my barrel racing experience made the horse riding part come as second nature. It was the quick action with the gun where I was lacking! I did get to try a couple times a while back with Bobby and Barb Ruwe of Ohio, so it wasn’t completely foreign. Overall, I think I did alright and have a feeling I’ll be riding and shooting again in the future! If you have not tried Cowboy Mounted Shooting, you just have to try it at least once. That’s all it takes to get hooked!

The Hoosier Horse Fair brought excitement for us, we spent our time at the QHRAI booth helping with the race action and quarter horse demonstrations where we could. It’s always great to get to visit with friends we haven’t seen through the winter months too. Hopefully if you were there you picked up a free copy of our April Event Issue. As far as things around here at the farm - it’s been busy. Breeding and foaling season make it hard for meeting deadlines and I’ve spent a lot of sleepless nights with mares who show signs of foaling. I’m going to have to set up a temporary office in the barn so I can type while I’m on baby watch. I’m sure Bella’s friend - the neighbor dog, Duke - would keep me company! Hopefully you are all enjoying your spring doing something, somewhere with a horse....whether it be waiting on a foal to arrive, riding though the woods, at a barrel race or spending an early morning at the track....remember to take in a deep breath once in a while and enjoy yourself. Until next month.........like I said before, take a deep breath and don’t forget to count your blessings on horseback! God Bless and Ride Safe, Christa Conway

A Little “Barrel Talk” Here’s a portion of a Hot topic on Barrel Horse World’s Barrel Talk.....Enjoy!

Tips for bridleing colts Julia&Jade Posted 2012-04-24 10:44 AM Regular Posts: 72 I have put the first 3 rides on my colt this spring and he is doing great with everything except bridleing. I did things last fall like making him put his head down and bridled him with out much difficulty last fall. This spring however he’s figured out that he can just put his head up in the air and get away from it. I always make him take it eventually. I’d just really rather not fight about it. Does anyone have any suggestions about different tricks to get their colts easy to bridle? dashnlotti Expert Posts: 1427 Location: Louisiana Teach him to drop his head when you apply pressure at the poll. With either your fingers, or a rope halter if he’s too tall. As soon as he gives a tiny bit, release the pressure, then repeat. I had a mare that would pick her head up and refuse the bit, and after a couple days of this, I could just touch her poll, and she would drop it down to about waist level. KylaKris Extreme Veteran Posts: 436 Put him in a round pen and when he fights you or puts his head in the air, make him work. When they get out of breath they tend to figure out it is easier to just do what you are asking. Blaundee Keep those crap slapping tails away! Posts: 8295 Location: Around here somewhere... I teach them to take the bit with a treat- let them sniff the treat, then as soon as the bit goes into their mouth so does the treat- they quickly learn to take the bit easily, and it builds a habit. Then I phase out the treat, and only give treats once in a while. All of the horses I’ve trained are a pleasure to bridle, they keep their heads nice and low and open up right away for a bit, even when they haven’t had a

treat while bridling in years. ETA- some of my horses will even bridle themselves if I just hold the bridle up for them :) suzee2qtee Extreme Veteran Posts: 595 RE: Blaundee - This is kind of what I do... Make it nice right from the start... cowgalsissy Too Skinny Posts: 6212 Location: LA Lower Alabama Stand at the shoulder and ask them to flex to you. This is how I halter and bit any young horse until they get solid. Julia&Jade I was kind of thinking putting some molasses or something on the bit? Do you think that would work? He was really good with it last fall by doing the pressure on the poll thing. but now he wont respond to that if im holding the bit. He does if the bit isn’t near his mouth though. Fairweather Twin Sister to Queen Boobie Posts: 8663 Location: East Tennessee If he was doing it before without problems and now he’s evading getting bridled, then something has caused him to change and caused him to dread putting the bit in his mouth. Have you checked his teeth? Ruling out teeth issues, I’d look at how you’re putting the bit in his mouth. I always open their mouths first with my fingers and make sure their teeth are open before I attempt to put the bit in so that I’m not banging the bit against their teeth --think of it as bumping a spoon against your teeth. Doesn’t feel good!. Then I’m real gentle with slipping the bit in and the bridle up over their head. jco1982 Member Posts: 15 Location: Missouri RE: Fairweather - Good point. If teeth have been ruled out maybe get a rubber bit?? This is what I started my guy in and he has never been a bother to bridle.

Cyber World Challenged Posts: 1802 Location: My yellow submarine! (near the strawberry fields) RE: Fairweather - What she said suzee2qtee Extreme Veteran Posts: 595 RE: Fairweather - Yep check for wolf teeth.... i didn’t think of that... lonestarace Expert Posts: 2979 Location: Kansas Get a plastic squirt bottle like you use for ketchup and mustard and fill it with molasses. Dribble a little on your finger, and wipe it on the inner edge of your colt’s lip, on the side of his mouth. Let him taste it, (watch his ears go up!) and then immediately hold the tip of the bottle near his nose and just squeeze it a little so he smells it. Then dribble some on the bit, right in the center. Let him smell it, and gently touch the front of his lips with it....once he gets the molasses and bit in his mouth, I can about guarantee you’ll never have any more issues. I do this for about a month. Then, I get to where he doesn’t get it on his bit, but will get a little dribble squirted into the corner of his mouth after we’ve ridden, cooled out, and are ready to go back to the pasture. This is one of two times that I ‘treat’ my horses.....a treat to catch them....they always come to me for it...I quit chasing horses years ago....and a squirt at the end...that’s it. My dad taught me the molasses trick when I was 9 years old, and had my first ‘big’ horse. He was a 16.2 hand appy gelding...the best babysitter in the world, but he would stand there and just lift his nose up...just out of my reach. Daddy showed me how to use the molasses, and the bugger would drop his head and open his mouth. I’ve never had it not work! Of course, like everyone else said above, be aware of whether you bang his teeth with the bit once you get it in his mouth, or if you pull his ears too much, etc...if you’re being gentle but firm, I’ll bet the molasses does the trick. This is also handy when using paste wormers....dribble a bit on the tip, let em smell it, and they’ll be cool about it.

FROM THE COVER

I was born in mineral wells TX. As a baby was branded by my grandfather, from that point on my entire family, young and old called me Tex. Once a Texan you are hooked for life. The Running M is currently located in South East Texas as well as Indiana, where we run over one hundred head of Black Angus and 25 horses, most are performance bred mares. I used to ride bucking bulls and horses with my friends on the weekends. I did not know how to ride a horse that wasn’t bucking, had no idea that horses were intelligent and could be a friend as well. I found this out when I got my first horse, Copper. From that moment on I was hooked and wanted to learn all that I could. I started watching the natural horsemen and they inspired me. When a friend offered to sell me two seven year old stallions, I jumped at the chance. I named them Tucker and Cimarron. Cimarron was a bona fide killer. He tried to stomp me more than once. With a little time, patience and natural training, he is now my best friend and most trusted mount. And so my love of horses and training grew.

Our program starts with two stallions, Streakin Shawnee Yuma (Yuma) and JD Streakin Drifter (Big Hoss.) Both stallions have a great disposition and are easy to handle. We ride them in all sorts of situations from riding with mares to cattle and more. Our most recent adventure was at the Joe Beaver Superstar Shootout. Both stallions did flag work with over 420 around them. We have gone all over the US to find our mares, from Texas, Kansas, South Dakota, Nebraska and even into Canada. We look for sound minds, cow sense, speed, athletic ability and conformation. I hope through my horse program that I can share my love of horses with friends, family and anyone else who shares my passion. Contact Us for more information on our stallions.

As a result, RSNC members who compete on American Quarter Horses have the chance to earn points and qualify for both an AQHA world championship show and the RSNC National Finals during the same class. Battle in the Saddle will also host the World’s Greatest Horseman Shootout, which puts one horse, one rider and one bridle together for four exciting western performance events. The Shootout will feature two riders per association – AQHA, National Cutting Horse Association, American Rope Horse Futurity Association, National Reined Cow Horse Association and Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association. This year, Shorty’s Caboy Hattery will be donating a hat to the winner of the World’s Greatest Horseman Shootout at Battle in the Saddle. The winner will also be nominated to the 2013 NRCHA World’s Greatest Horseman competition held in conjunction with the NRCHA Celebration of Champions in San Angelo, Texas. Battle in the Saddle is owned by Oklahoma State Fair and managed by the American Quarter Horse Association. All breeds are welcome, but American Quarter Horses competing will receive AQHA points. The complete list of the stops on the 2012 Oklahoma Twister Rodeo Series will be finalized soon. So far, it is looking like a great season of rodeo in the Sooner State. The Living Legends Rodeo in Henryetta on September 1 & 2 is one you won’t want to miss. Not only does this rodeo determine the series champions but it is also a double point rodeo meaning it is also the first rodeo for the 2013 Twister Rodeo Series.

The 2012 Battle in the Saddle event schedule is now available. The tentative schedule for the 2012 Battle in the Saddle is now available. Battle in the Saddle, July 3-8 in Oklahoma City, showcases the many talents of the great American Quarter Horse, and is one event that shouldn’t be missed!

Barrel racer Carlee Pierce broke the world record at the 2011 WNFR with a time of 13.46.

The 2012 event will feature versatility ranch horse competition, cutting, roping, cowboy mounted shooting, barrel racing, working cow horse, ranch sorting, ranch pleasure, a ranch remuda challenge and the third annual World’s Greatest Horseman Shootout.

Battle in the Saddle will also host the 2012 Merial Ranch Sorting National Championships. In order to involve as many alliance events as possible, AQHA welcomed the

Pierce, of Stephenville, Texas, currently holds the number one position in the world. She rocked the barrel racing community last December by shattering the WNFR arena record. Pierce and her good horse Rare Dillion set the bar with a blistering 13.46 time during Round Five. The pair repeated the feat this March by setting a new arena record of 13.92 at the 2012 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

News “I’m really excited to join team,” Pierce states, “I have been a long-time customer of Pro Equine Products. Keeping my horses’ legs supported and protected helps them perform better and reduces down-time caused by injuries. I wouldn’t endorse a company if I didn’t believe in and actually use their products!”

Thursday’s racing started over a fast track and remained so through the first eight races on the program. Heavy thunderstorms rolled in to northeast Oklahoma City at that point, forcing Remington Park to delay race nine for 30 minutes. The entire 12-race program was completed.

Pierce grew up in a ranching family, and her parents encouraged her to stay involved in a variety of sports and activities. “School always came first, and I also played basketball, ran track, took piano lessons and was a cheerleader. It wasn’t until I graduated from high school that I focused on barrel racing.” Pierce is married to her childhood sweetheart, Steve, and they have three children, ages 12, 11 and 5. “I have been busy being a mom while competing in jackpots and working colts. It’s only very recently that I have been able to rodeo full time, but I have definitely paid my dues!”

Open daily at 10am for casino gaming and simulcast racing, Remington Park features the Bricktown Brewery on the casino floor. Admission, general parking and valet parking are always free at Remington Park.

When rodeo time rolls around, Pierce and her entire family load up in their motor home and head down the road. “I couldn’t do it without Steve,” she explains. “You will never see me at a rodeo without him. I don’t have a travelling partner, so he is my driver. I am so blessed to have him. He has been through my ups and downs and helps with training my horses.” It appears that Pierce has a lock on a berth at the 2012 WNFR with her current season earnings. “This takes some pressure off my horses, because I can pick and choose a little bit as to where I want to go, and I don’t have to run their wheels off. I’m also very excited that I got an invitation to compete at the Calgary Stampede this year. My position in the rankings will make it possible for me to attend without worrying about the rodeos I might be missing.” In addition to her well-known buckskin Dillion, Pierce also has two youngsters she’s bringing along. Tyson, a flashy five year old chestnut, was recently an emergency stand-in. “Dillion got sick at the San Antonio rodeo, so I had to ride Tyson, who had never run at a rodeo before! He did great, though. He ran less than 2/10’s off both nights and kept me in the average until Dillion recovered.” Pierce is also riding “BB,” a five year old blue roan mare. “She’s on her way to being a standout. She set the Texas Stampede arena record in Allen, Texas, and she won the Dodge City rodeo.”

LT Count It finished in :16.466 seconds over a fast track. An Arkansas-bred by Count Corona from the Bully Bullion mare Bullisa Jane, LT Count It has now posted a top-three finish in six consecutive races, with four victories, dating back to September 2011. Away as the even-money wagering favorite, LT Count It paid $4 to win, $3.60 to place and $2.60 to show. Paint Or More returned $12.60 to place and $7.20 to show. Found A Candy Tree paid $2.80 to show. The win was the eighth from 27 career attempts for LT Count It. His third Remington Park win was worth $13,530 to increase his lifetime earnings to $92,844.

News GIVING BACK Giving to a worthy cause is always a good thing. But, some say that it is the manner in how we give that really makes a difference. The Dreaming Of Three Team is one group of dedicated people that found a way to help those in need through doing what they love the most, competing on their horses barrel racing or in many other disciplines on horseback. It all started when Pittsburgh business executive Jackie Harris rose to a challenge that would crush most people. In the fall of 2010 she lost her stepfather to cancer and three months later in 2011 her father passed away from heart disease. Instead of being defeated by this huge loss, she fought back and created the concept of “Dreaming Of Three.”

other worthy charities. There are also many corporate sponsors who see the value of the Dreaming Of Three vision and are getting behind it. And to show her business acumen she has established an online store where people can show support by purchasing one of the items available, which goes back into Dreaming of Three to take more families to more rodeos. Jackie stated, “Dreaming Of Three allows me to make a difference in the lives of people who are going through horrible things. I know I am doing the right thing, as one act of kindness causes a ripple effect, with no logical end.” For further information on Dreaming Of Three as a program and their team members you can visit the website at www.dreamingofthree.com You can reach Jackie Harris at 724-272-3351 or Jackie@dreamingofthree.com

The Future is in Your Hands – Take the Reins! What You Can Do to Give Strength to the Horse Industry Press Release - American Horse Council - You may be surprised to know that there are over 9 million horses in the United States, based on a study done by the American Horse Council entitled the Economic Impact of the Horse Industry on the United States.

The American Horse Council (AHC) is the only organization that represents every segment of that vast horse population. Every day, the AHC communicates with Congress and other federal agencies to ensure that each understands the economic, agricultural, sporting, and recreational importance of the horse industry.

Jackie (left) and Amy, a cancer survivor, attended the rodeo in Denver in January. Dreaming of Three’s name came from dreaming of three fast, tight barrels in order to win money for the charities--the three charities she will be donating her winnings--and also about the three areas she wants to make a difference--1. Donating Winnings. 2. Taking families to rodeos that have a child fighting cancer or heart disease. 3. Allowing others to have their own loved one’s initials on her “saddle crosses” so that they can ride with her as well and honor them all as she enters the arena each time. On these crosses are initials of her own loved ones and friends, family and stranger’s loved ones who are fighting, lost the fight or won the fight with cancer or heart disease. Jackie wears these crosses on her saddle honoring all those listed as she enters the arena each time. She will be donating her winnings to the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association and several animal rescues. Just when Jackie’s program was taking off another difficulty jumped in her way. Her horse became injured and was unable to compete. But once again, she rose to the challenge and found other riders willing to carry her flag for charity in the barrel racing circuit. As other riders heard of her efforts they offered to “ride for the cure.” Jackie found they all had two things in common, love of their horses and competing and burning desires to help others in need. Now her team consists of people that are carrying her flags of charity and have added others to the team expanding the amount of beneficiaries to include

This can be tedious work, but without open lines of communication with our leaders in Washington, D.C. we could lose the ability to enjoy our horses and our work in the industry that we love. We hope that our efforts ensure that these federal officials will support a legislative and regulatory structure for the horse industry that encourages individuals and other entities to support and participate in the horse industry, to invest in our horses, and to sponsor and support our events and activities. The AHC believes that the more opportunities there are to use horses in various activities, the better the overall health of the industry and those who participate. Our goal is to keep opportunities open so that EVERYONE in the horse industry is able to thrive. Because we are a not-for-profit organization, we depend on you – a person who is devoted to your horse and to your sport – to help us stand up for our rights as horse enthusiasts. Join the American Horse Council today and help us to help you, your horse, your sport, and your industry! It is extremely important for everyone in the horse community to present a unified front and show Congress and other federal agencies that the horse industry is not only important to their constituents, but is also a large, economically diverse industry that provides hundreds of thousands of US jobs and billions of dollars in tax revenue. The AHC is the only Washington, D.C. based organization solely dedicated to representing all horses, equestrians, and every segment of the diverse horse community and industry. The AHC provides many updates on important issues affecting the industry, and explains to its members how they can contact their elected officials to speak up about these issues. By joining the AHC, you give strength to the horse industry’s voice. To learn more about supporting the AHC and becoming a member today visit www.horsecouncil.org/ahc-memberships.

QHRAI MAY Newsletter

Quarter Horse Racing is off to a bit of a slow start at Indiana Downs. We have had a few hiccups, with cancelled races due to low entries the first day, and cancelled races due to rain on April 28th. We hope that the hiccups are all out now, and the rest of the meet will run without any glitches. QHRAI officers will be working with Indiana Downs track management to identify the best ways to bring back missed races. Congratulations to all of the early race winners and best of luck to all the hopefuls still to come. The two year olds made their debut in April this year. April 26th was a chance for the babies to school who needed a little experience. April 23rd was the first official 2 year old race. There are many nice 2 year olds ready to run, and seeing them walk on the track for the first time is one of the most exciting times of the year to me. Congratulations to the Indiana breds who won both of the open two year old races in April. Indiana has a lot of talent!! The first day of schooling races went well, with 20 horses taking advantage of the experience running down the track in company from the starting gates. QHRAI is planning to sponsor a second day of schooling races in May. Watch for details to come. The Born Runner and the Indiana Downs Classic Finals are May 19th. The final count for horses that have made the sustaining payments are 21 in the Born Runner and 15 in the Indiana Downs Classic. Trials for the Born Runner are May 4th. We will know the final 10 horses running for the money when the trials are over. The PP’s for the Classic will be available in the race office about a week before entries are due for the finals. They need to ensure they have the current earnings, as you know, highest 2011-2012 earnings are preferred!! QHRAI made their 3rd consecutive appearance at the Hoosier Horse Fair as the Sponsor of the West Pavilion Arena in April. Check out the photo’s in this Horse Resource to see all the fun we had, and plan to attend next year. I want to thank everyone who helped make this event a huge success. There are a lot of great people in the Quarter Horse Racing Industry willing to chip in and make things happen!! There’s a lot happening in May…. Mothers Day, Memorial Day and most important to Quarter Horse Trainers is Trainer’s Education Day…. It’s gonna happen on May 20th at Indiana Downs. Start time is 10:00 am and lunch will be served around noon. This continuing education course is a requirement of the Indiana Horse Racing Commission in

order to be licensed next year. It will be a chance for you to meet with the new Race Commission Attorneys and find out about the requirements of Workers Compensation and I-9 forms. If those two things sound like a foreign language to you, don’t worry, Holly and Leah will be there to explain. Quarter Horse Day at Indiana Downs is June 30th. Mark your calendars now and plan to join us for picnic lunch around 1:00, fun on the apron with activities and AQHA Racing Aces helping to teach people to handicap a race, free betting vouchers, a full card of the fastest horses in the world running for over half a million dollars in purses, and a pizza party with live entertainment after the races. Its gonna be fun!! Remember Quarter Horse Racing….. Half the track, Twice the excitement!! See you at the track!! Be safe and be lucky!! Michelle Collins QHRAI Executive Director

Schooling Races

QHRAI News

The Quarter Horse Racing Association of Indiana sponsored schooling races for 2 year olds on Thursday, April 26th at Indiana Downs. The first of five races started at noon and 20 horses gained the experience they needed to get ready to start in an official race. By starting in a schooling race, horses had the opportunity to get an official 250 yard work and to get gate approved. The day proved to be a great experience. QHRAI would like to thank Indiana Downs General Manager, Jon Schuster and all the people who worked so hard to make the races successful. QHRAI plans to host another day of schooling races in May. Watch for details of date and time on QHRAI.net.

In The Paddock This was the first visit to the paddock for many of the two year olds. Trainers, grooms and valets helped the babies relax as they were saddled and introduced to the paddock area.

Craig Daligian is a "must have" in the paddock area. He did a great job running the show and making sure all horses were tacked and going to the track according to protocol. "Thanks for all your help Craig"!!

GOING TO THE GATES The post parade proved to be “exciting for many of the babies as they made their first trip onto the track from the paddock and to the gates!!

om Mosley, QHRAI Director of Industry Relations, shows horse fans the fantastic photo album that Sarah Compton made after she attended the 2011 Quarter Horse Day at Indiana Downs. She had photos and details of horses in the paddock and going to the track and even about meeting jockeys and getting thier autographs. Sarah enterered her photo album in the 4-H fair and received Champion Honors. Sarah is a true example of someone who has a passion for horses and we certainly enjoyed her company at the Horse Fair. She talked about her experience and fun she had at Quarter Horse Day last year and the excitement of getting an at home visit on Christmas Eve from Jockey Jeff Hogan. She had a smile on her face every time we saw her. Sarah went into the hospital just a couple days after these pictures were taken at the horse fair, to have heart surgery. Our thoughts and prayers are with Sarah and her family as she recovers and we look forward to her participating in the QHRAI Youth Day this year and and once again seeing her at Quarter Horse Day on June 30th.

The demonstration of the Versatility of the American Quarter Horse included Hunter under Saddle and Western Pleasure by 2012 FFA Queen, Baily Laub riding Bo, barrel racing demonstrated by Travis and Tyler Woodard, Reining demonstrated by many students of Cory Craig Performance Horses, Pony Horse and of course, the racing American Quarter Horse. Thanks to everyone who made these demonstrations a huge success!!

The Racing Quarter Horse Half the Track, Twice the Excitement!!

There were many types of fan fare for people of all ages at the horse fair. The crowd at the Quarter Horse Demonstration chanting "Quarter Horse" got free T shirts thrown by leading Quarter Horse jockeys. Participants in the handicapping races who chose the winning horse won the "golden ticket" award which entitles them to a complimentary pass to Quarter Horse Day on June 30th. Jockeys signed autographs for fans of all ages, and the "fastest kids in the arena" won a bid to Youth Day or gifts after the foot races. Outdoor shows are already flourishing and horses are really opening up and shifting into another gear. Upcoming IBRA Match Race and Preferred Show (Cloverdale, IN) Several of the original winners from the 1st ever IBRA Match Race in 2010 will return to try and re-accomplish their feats this year with the IBRA returning to Cloverdale, IN for our first preferred show in C Bar C Expo Center. A special thanks to Carl and Cindy Harlan for the hard work they have put forth to give us an exceptional arena in the North East. For those of you who have not been to C Bar C, this is a phenomenal facility with 500 stalls, concessions, vendor space, entry office, makeup arena and show arena all under one roof. The show bill for the Match Race is attached. You asked for it you got it…LOWER OFFICE FEES AND NO LATE FEES for classes outside of the Match Race. Start getting your teams together for this very fun event. Be sure to check your states homepage for important updates and news from your director Change of Mailing address for all purposes: PO Box 91205 Louisville, KY 40291 Sincerely, Shane Cline, IBRA President

State News GEORGIA

Georgia is heading in a forward direction! We have meetings set up with several associations that are very interested in holding IBRA sanctioned runs. As well, I am working on an independent Added Money Run to be held later this year. Progress is being made in our great state; slow coming, but sure!

KENTUCKY

May should be a great month for KY IBRA. Kicking the month of with the 2nd annual Spring Extravaganza hosted at Branham Farms Arena. Bluegrass Saddle Club begins their very popular Friday night shows. Lets all show Bluegrass our support, this is where we all grew up showing and we have a great group of people working hard to make us all happy. Cynthiana, Smiths Grove, Greenup and Payneville are all on the line up. Welcome back to the outdoor show arenas I know I for one am looking forward to getting out there and hammering down. The Match Race in Cloverdale, IN is also available to the states to be used as a fundraiser show. We will be setting up a silent auction table at the show. If you have any items to donate please call or email me. We will also be doing a horse chip bingo as a KY fundraiser at the show. Good luck to you all and hope to see you soon! MISSISSIPPI

Hope everyone is doing well. We have had 7 shows so far and I would like to see many more. If anyone wants to have an IBRA sanctioned show or knows of anyone who would be willing to have a barrel race, let me know and I will make it happen. The most important thing is to build up our memberships for the state of Mississippi. If everyone could spread the word and encourage people to join that would be fantastic. If our membership grows than I can put together a state show possibly a multi-day event. See Everyone in May at the Memorial Day Barrel race 

OHIO

Thank you to the members that have gained 2012 Ohio Sponsors for our Awards Program this year. We still have plenty of time to add to the list. Remember, to run in the Sponsor / Director Race at Nationals, you need at least $100 in sponsors. In a couple of weeks, I’ll hopefully see some of you at the Preferred Race at Circle G. Please introduce yourself, and let me know your thoughts. I’m always looking into new ideas. Ohio will have a Silent Auction Table during the Preferred Race, please throw a few items in the trailer to add to the Auction. This is a great way to grow our Awards Fund. Please support our Fundraiser T-Shirts, this is an additional avenue to help advertise our sponsors. The more feedback they get through us and from us....the more likely we can gain their support in the future. T-Shirts are $12.00 each and Long Sleeve T-Shirts (limited supply) are $18.00. May 25, 26, & 27th will be our Fundraiser Race at WB Ranch. Please bring your favorite homemade snack, prepackaged, and any items you can donate towards the Silent Auction for Saturday. If you are available to set barrels, announce, or help in the office, I’d appreciate it. If you turn in any sponsors, please message me their address....I want to make sure they all get a follow-up as to what our Ohio IBRA is up to, and how we are utilizing their sponsorship support. The Town & Country Co-op Equine Excellence went well. We will be seeing a few new barrel racers at the shows this Spring! Keep sending me your ideas for AWARDS, and keep your eyes open for the following candidates, Best Dressed Cowboy & Cowgirl, Most Improved Rider, and of course, Good Sportsmanship. A winner for each category will be awarded at our State Finals with a “super nice” gift from Ozark Leather. Happy Racing, Lynn Brenner

PA-EAST

On April 13th-15th the annual D & D Spring Barrel Event is being held at Diamond 7 Arena. We will be having a Silent Auction to benefit our Year-end awards so please try to bring an item to auction off. We will also do a 50/50 and I will need volunteers to sell tickets! Tanya Konopinski will have candy to distribute this weekend too so please see her to get a box or two to sell. Last year this was a huge fundraiser & we were able to purchase Youth saddles because of it. If you have any ideas for fundraiser please get with Gay, Brenda, or myself. The more money raised and put in the bank means better awards! Just a reminder at Diamond 7 Arena show that Dave is putting on. We need members to Volunteer to help out with setting barrels, running the gate, etc. Dave has graciously offered to give some of the proceeds from these shows to help out with awards as long as we get members to

help out at the shows! It doesn’t mean a few members helping all day. It means everyone helping a couple of hours here and there! Everyone loves to get nice awards! I’m sure everyone is tired of hearing this but we need sponsors! Even a $25 sponsor will help out...get out and ask around. Family members, feed stores, your farrier, where you work are just some examples.

TENNESSEE

Hey Fellow IBRA Members, I hope that everyone has been enjoying this great weather thus far. I know I can’t say this enough but please go out and try to start getting sponsors for the TN State Finals which will be held at the Miller Coliseum in Murfreesboro, TN on Aug. 17-19, 2012. Any amount or donation will gladly be appreciated and accepted. Remember if you $100 sponsorship you are eligible to run in the Directors/Sponsors Race at the National Finals which will be held in Louisville, KY this year on Oct 1-6. We have sold the candles but one case. I also have candy bars that are in if anyone would like to sale candy bars please contact me and I will get you some candy bars. We actually double our money on a case of candy bar. Please pitch in and help out. I need all the help I can get to raise money this year. So far I have had $100 turned in as part of a sponsorship. This will not get us to where we have been in the years past. So if we don’t raise the money we get the nice awards that have given out in years past. I can’t do it alone I need everyone’s effort to make this year a success. You get out what You put in!! See ya down the road. Jamie

WISCONSIN More crazy weather in March. Inside one day at Bound’s outside the next running in 80 degree weather. Also, another great show at Chism Trail over 60 in the open. Thanks to everyone for coming out. Please watch the state page for upcoming shows, there are a few new ones. Welcome to the new producers. Please remember the state finals at Bound’s Showtime Arena in Deerfield July 28 & 29. I hope to have a showbill SOON! Any suggestions please let me know. I have received the buckles from Frontier for the Open, Youth, and Masters 2012 point Champions. Once again they are spectacular. I hope to have pictures on our facebook page. Another very nice show at Chism Trail , 60 in the Open. Their finals are April 28th & 29th. Please watch the show approvals on the IBRA website. Several new shows for May. Loomis’ Lazy L Arena in Mondovi, The Midnight Riders Arena in Mondovi and the High School Rodeo Arena in Arcadia. Check out these dates. Thanks for approving your shows IBRA! Take care, Patti

Troy Crumrine & Costly Crystal Claim Another Futurity Title

2012 IBRA 3D Futurity & Preferred Show Lewisburg, Ohio

FRIDAY WINNERS

A

s the cool March evenings gave way to mild warm days in Lewisburg, Ohio; trailers of all sorts rolled in slowly, one by one, down the long Circle G drive to find a space to call home for a few days. Circle G – an awesome facility nestled in the middle of God’s country. The masses focused on the IBRA 3D Futurity & Preferred Shows, which were about to commence; while the Circle G “family” of workers, under the leadership of manager Dennis Cherry, worked tirelessly to ensure everything was ready. Tractor trailer truckloads of bedding had been moved to the stalls. All the indoor grounds had been dragged every day. The Circle G family had prepared for the hundreds that came and then met each competitor with a warm welcome.

We barrel racers usually miss that part of it all. We’re like the hot horses we ride - we go from place to place ready for the fight to finish first; seldom noticing what the waiting facilities people have done to make it perfect for another round of runs. So – before getting to the results – we’re just reminding you all how good it is to have the Circle G family welcoming IBRA members.

Thus - we cowgirls and cowboys…thank you Circle G; kudos for going above and beyond to welcome and provide us barrel racers with an awesome place to shine that beams of friendly, helpful faces to so many that were first timers to Ohio and naturally, those who’ve been there many times before.

She’s one hot mare out of Dash ta Fame. Yes - this dream of a horse makes Mr. and Mrs. Dunn proud. She’s made it into every final round she has competed for and has won roughly $20,000 to date. I’m learning which mammas will tolerate a dog nearby and which ones will try to squish me like a bug if I get close. I don’t care much for the latter mares. There has been one revelation made by your truly this month. I hate to admit it, but Duke - the neighbor dog that never went home - is really not such a bad guy. (Even though he slobbers and drools when he begs and he leaves ginormous “dukey piles” all over the yard....) I have witnessed a softer side of Ole’ Duke that has left a lasting impression. Let me share. The first baby that was born was witnessed by most of the people that live here. I was out in the barn looking for mice during the excitement, but Duke, he was engrossed in the miracle happening on the other side of the stall door. He was on the floor, as flat as he could make himself with his head as close to the door as he could get it....all to get a glimpse. He was hooked...in love....mesmerized....whatever you want to call it, but I think that he thought he had found his calling. He was now “Duke - Protector of the Baby Horses.” I would get a kick out of him trying to visit with them all. He learned real quick about the mares I mentioned before. He’s a much bigger target

than me and almost got squished himself a few times. He witnessed a few more miracles and just like the first time, he would get as close as the people allow to get a peek. One of the foals born was very weak and the people were spending a lot of time in the stall with him, several times a day and all night they were feeding the baby, trying to get the little guy up to walk and working with the vet to get him well. Each time they would enter the stall, Duke would follow and stay as close as he could. Sometimes the people would make him leave the stall and then he would just stand in the doorway, watching and whimpering. That would kind of get to me. Unfortunately, the little foal just wasn’t strong enough to stand and nurse and after about three days he gave up the fight and went on to horse heaven. (And yes, I believe there are horses - and dogs - in heaven.) Duke took it very hard. The people had to leave the foal in the stall next to his mamma until they could make arrangements for his little body. Duke would not leave the foal’s side. He stayed right there in the straw with his head sometimes resting on the foal’s hind leg. He had us all tore up.....it was bad enough losing that foal, but then watching Duke’s loyalty gave us all a peek at unconditional love and loyalty. The only time Duke left the stall was when the people called for all of us dog’s or someone pulled in he driveway....then right back to his post. It was sad to watch them take the little fella away, but we all knew he was better off and Duke was satisfied that he had done his job well. And I have to say that I agree. Until next month.... Stay loyal.....

Significant Time

”Time has no meaning in itself unless we choose to give it significance.”

~~~ Leo Buscaglia
I
f anything, I’m learning that we have contact with people everyday that we might label as “insignificant.” But because that contact took time in our and their life, it is significant. It is significant solely based on the fact that those few seconds, several minutes, or hours were how we chose to use our time. It is our choice that makes it significant. Time is truly the most limited resource we have. How much we have is clearly defined and we will never have one second more than has been determined. By no means, should we walk around trying to make every contact significant. I think the point is that we should walk consciously through life not wasting any moments. We should realize the “thank you” when someone holds the door; the sincere “how are you?” as we pass each other; the smile at a frowning face; and the “I love you”, “I like you”, or “thank you for being my friend” spoken words may mean a world to someone, but cost us only a few seconds. The cost is nothing more than an investment in the life of another person’s life. And, the return on that investment may make us rich beyond any measure.
Angular Limb Deformities in Foals
• • •
First picture on left is of a three month old BEFORE a check ligament desmotomy surgery. The deep flexor tendon is pulling on P3 causing a “clubbed foot”. Center photo is same foal about four days post check ligament desmotomy surgery. Notice how the fetlock has a more normal pastern/ hoof axis. Final photo is of the same baby AFTER he has a periosteal stripping surgery to correct “knock knees or carpus valgus.”
Running on straight and correct legs gives our equine athletes the best opportunity to get where they are going in the least amount of time. Straight and correct legs also gives them the best chance of not having lameness problems with sore joints, strained or torn ligaments or other problems caused by having out of balance bones and joints. What can we do to give our equine athletes the best chance at running on straight and correct legs? The first step is to always select the most conformationally correct sire and dam for your foal as possible. Conformation, both good and bad, is highly heritable. After we have done a good job at selecting good parents for our foals the next step is to evaluate the foal for correctness in conformation on the day it is born. Many conformation faults such as a mild case of carpus valgus or “knocked kneed” will correct themselves with stall rest if the deformity is recognized early. Some deformities such as tendons that are too lax require the opposite treatment and that is to be turned out to get some exercise. The lax tendons will respond to the exercise by tightening up. However depending on the severity of the laxity, the foal may need to be turned out in periods of an hour or two so that he doesn’t over exercise the lax tendons and ligaments before they are ready to support his legs moving as he runs and plays in a large paddock or pasture. The key to having straight and correct legs is to check over your foals legs and watch them walk at least two or three times a week. In the first few weeks it is even more important to check the foal’s legs every day because a straight legged foal can change to a foal with an angular limb deformity in a day’s time. If the foal is allowed to bounce around on crooked legs then the deformity will usually get worse.
Page 30
Article By Dr. Steve Fisch, DVM Pictures Provided by AVS
A deformity such a “contracted tendons” or clubbed foot can many times be corrected in the first few days of life if given a large dose (3 grams IV) of tetracycline. Tetracycline at this dose binds calcium in the blood stream and allows the contracted tendons to relax. This treatment has a lesser per cent chance of being successful if given when the baby is older so once again early detection and treatment is the key to success. It is important not to confuse a “contracted tendon” foal with a foal that is “over at the knees”. Giving tetracycline to a foal that is over at the knees will not correct the problem and may make it worse. The cause of “over at the knees” is the joint capsule and the structures that support the caudal or back of the knee or carpus are too tight. This deformity can usually be corrected by putting a cast on the legs from just below the elbows to just below the fetlocks. The cast shifts the weight bearing from the tendons and ligaments to the cast. This shifting of the weight bearing allows the joint capsule, ligaments and other supporting structures to relax. After forty eight to seventy two hours these structures are usually relaxed enough so that the carpus (knee) can rest in its normal position. Another problem can be foals that have feet that turn out but turned out feet can also be normal. Some foals that have narrow chests will toe out but will eventually become normal as their chests widen and the legs turn in as the chest widens. However some foals turn out excessively and most of the time glue on shoes with medial toe extensions will cause the foal to orient his legs in the correct direction. These shoes are left on ten to fourteen days depending on the age of the foal. It is best to leave the foal and the mare in a stall for those ten to fourteen days as the shoes will come off if they get stuck in the mud.
Photo 1 is of a carpus valgus knee that the owner waited too long to correct with a periosteal stripping surgery. The radiograph shows a screw through the growth palte of the fast growing or long side of the carpus. The short side of the carpus has a periosteal stripping surgery performed. Photo 2 is of the same carpus before the screw was put in the growth plate. Photo 3 shows the depth of the growth plate being measured so that the screw is placed to the correct depth. Photo 4 shows a drill marking the path for the screw across the growth plate.
For deformities that are too severe or are identified too late for conservative therapy, surgery can many times be a successful alternative. In the case of a clubbed footed foal, an “inferior check ligament desmotomy” surgery will most of the time result in the foot returning to the correct angle with P1, P2 and P3 being in correct alignment if the deformity is detected early enough. The inferior check ligament is cut and this allows the deep digital flexor tendon to relax and P3 to return to its correct position. If need be an extension is added to the toe to aid the foot to protect the already worn down toe. The foal is hand walked and the leg is wrapped for two weeks. The leg is stretched out in front of the foal for twenty second intervals several times a day. The stretching not only stretches the deep digital flexor tendon but it decreases adhesion formation at the site of the check ligament transaction. If the carpus valgus or knock kneed foal or the bow legged or carpus varus foal does not respond to conservative therapy, many times a periosteal stripping surgery will allow the affected leg to straighten itself. A periosteal stripping surgery actually cuts the covering of the radius (periosteum) at the growth plate. This takes the tension of the periosteum off the short side of the radius and allows the short side to catch up in growth with the long side of the radius. Depending on how severe the deformity is, it could be corrected anywhere from a few days time up to a month’s time. The foal is kept in a stall during this time.
Page 31
We have gone over the most common angular limb deformities in young foals. Most of these cases will have good results with early detection and treatment. Besides good breeding, the key to straight and correct legs is an at least three to four times weekly walking through the foals’ pasture with a careful evaluation of each foal by looking at him from each side and evaluating him while he is still and in motion. This attention to detail can pay off big time when your foals are in competitions during their adult life. Waiting until they are adults to correct these problems is waiting too late. Taking care of your foals legs is truly one case where an ounce of prevention (early detection and as conservative treatment as possible) is worth a pound of cure.
myself and Terry Martin also brought in large crowds into the lecture area of the South Pavilion as we presented information on what it takes to get you and your horse started in CMSA. We had a great group of celebrity riders with all of them doing remarkably well combining their riding and shooting skills. Cory Craig, reining trainer of Craig Performance Horses, was our first celebrity shooter and told us that this was one of the most exciting things he’s ever done on a horse, by the way, he shot clean both rounds. He also said he’s had a lot of his clients ask him about the sport and he never had an answer for them. That’s not a problem now, he said he’s ready to tell them how much fun he had and they all need to give it a “shot “so to speak.
Our next celebrity shooter was none other than co-owner of the Fast Horse Resource Magazine, Christa Conway. Christa’s background in barrel racing really paid off as she negotiated the course with speed and accuracy, and ladies, Christa hit 9 out of 10 balloons the first round and shot clean the second round. Christa had a great time and we thank her for participating with us and for giving us the opportunity to promote Cowboy Mounted Shooting with the Fast Horse Resource. Folks, if these two start competing in CMSA, we all could be in trouble!!!!!!!. Many visitors stopped by the CMSA Booth and stalls to gather information, ask questions, look at the horses, and read each horse’s biography. The IMR had a great looking booth with a flat screen TV playing DVD’s of some of our best shooting around the country. IRR decorated the stall end- cap in a rustic Blacksmith/Livery Stable theme with everyone pitching in with individual stall decorations. It was a popular place for visitors to stop and pose for photos in front of the hitching rail and talk” cowboy” with us. We saw a lot of new faces and made a lot of new friends. Can’t wait until next year! Many thanks go out to all IRR and IMR members, family, friends and volunteers that made the weekend a success! That’s all for this month. Rodeo News from the
Indiana High School Rodeo Association
IHSRA and IJRA WORK TOGETHER IN JOINT RODEO I was waiting for someone to send me the article to submit this month when it came to me that I should just write this one myself about something that I really enjoy and feel strongly about – the IHSRA and the IJRA joining forces and putting on a rodeo together. The Indiana High School Rodeo Association and the Indiana Junior Rodeo Association will be combining their efforts in the upcoming joint rodeo May 12th and 13th at the Hoosier Horse Park in Edinburgh, Indiana. This will be the fourth time that we have joined together the two associations for a rodeo. Ideas for the first joint venture a few years ago were met with skepticism from both sides, but the rodeo came off without a hitch. Both associations were used to running rodeos their own way and concerns about combining such a broad age group – preschoolers through high school age – were heavy on many a parent’s mind. I have two daughters who went through all four years of the IHSRA while my son was in the junior rodeo, so I had a different perspective and knew what kind of kids we have in the high school association. They are polite, responsible, respectful and worthy of the admiration that the younger kids have for them. They really step up during the junior portion of the rodeo - helping untie calves, set up poles and barrels,
2012 Schedule May 12-13, 2012May 26-28, 2012 – June 9-10, 2012 – June 15-16, 2012 – July 15-21, 2012 –
Edombirgj. IN [Joint Rodeo IJRA] Lexington, KY Lebanon, Indiana State Finals TBA Nationals -Rock Springs, Wyoming
hold goats etc. Joint rodeos are beneficial for both associations – the younger members get to watch someone just a few years older than them and see how quickly their goals and aspirations can be fulfilled and the older kids get to feel what it’s like to be role models and set important examples for the younger ones. My girls have both graduated, but I remember what it was like trying to compete in both associations and often having to divide the family up due to conflicts in the schedule. Joint rodeos make this unnecessary since they can all compete at the same location. Kindergarten through fifth grade compete in the slack portion of the rodeo and sixth grade through seniors compete during the performance in the evening. How exciting is it for a 6th grader to compete side by side with a senior and even end up on top! Yet another reason that these joint ventures are worthwhile is that they save both associations in the cost of the rodeo. We can share in the expenses such as arena rental, judges, ambulance, stock costs and we can also share in the work required to put a rodeo on. While reading the bios of the member spotlights these past several months, it seems that a common reason that these young adults enjoy the IHSRA is that our association is an extended family to them. They have developed relationships as strong or stronger than they have with their immediate family members. What better way to showcase this than at a joint IHSRA/IJRA rodeo? Now their families have grown tremendously!
Lucianne McDuffee
My name is Lucianne McDuffee, the daughter of Lori and Ed McDuffee. I am 18 years old and a senior at Perry Meridian High School in Indianapolis, Indiana. This is my fourth year to compete in the Indiana High School Rodeo Association. I came in my freshman year new to rodeo. I was told it was a great place to learn, develop skills, and grow with a great group of kids my age. Whoever told me that was exactly right. I currently barrel race and pole bend off of my horse Elvis. I plan on going to Murray State University in the fall to continue rodeo and get my athletic training degree. My most memorable rodeo memory was my first run back after an injury that changed my life. I never thought I’d run again, but with the inspiring words and the help of my rodeo family, I am back to where I left off..
Chase Layton Chase is a 17 year old senior at Greenfield Central High School in Greenfield, Indiana. His parents are Arlyne and Thomas Layton and he has been a member of the Indiana High School Rodeo Association for two years. Chase is a calf roper and his horse’s name is Colonel Sprat Rocks but he calls him MT or Dunny for short. When asked why he joined the IHSRA he said that he always wanted to be a calf roper and that he enjoys hanging out with his rodeo family. After high school he plans on attending a 4 year college, continuing to rodeo, and become a farrier. He also hopes that his hard work will pay off and he will rodeo professionally. His favorite IHSRA memory was the 2011 state finals where he finally caught his calf after two days of trying!
R
odeo season is back in full swing and off to an amazing start. This year’s Indiana Cinch Division Team traveled to Powderly, KY for the Quad State rodeo held on March 24th and 25th to compete against Cinch Division teams from Kentucky and Illinois. This year, Indiana came out on top and is very proud to have the Quad State Champion flag flying in Indiana until next year. Way to go Team Indiana! Indiana had an outstanding weekend. Contestants continued to compete for the opportunity to be one of the top four in each event from their state, and have the honor of competing with the best of the best from our country as well as Canada and Australia during the Cinch Division National Finals in Gallup, NM. After the Quad State rodeo, Anna Dietrich is leading the Girl’s All-Around while Tucker Whitten is at the top of the Boy’s Cinch All-Around. Grace Hasler and Dalton Hartle are having a great Rookie season and find their names at the top of the All-Around Rookie list. All of the contestants on Team Indiana played such an important part in the Quad State win. Check out the IJRA website for more results. www.ijra.org
until the IJRA State Finals which will be August 11th and 12th in Frankfort, IN. Get your tickets from any IJRA cowboy or cowgirl and help them have the chance to win $100! The Edinburgh rodeo will be held on May 12th and 13th at the Hoosier Horse Park. This rodeo will be a joint rodeo with the Indiana High School Rodeo Association. Our joint rodeos give the kids the opportunity to watch contestants at the next level compete. Since the IHSRA also has a great group of young adults, it offers the younger contestants a chance to interact with role models and mentors. Come and watch two full days of exciting rodeo action. IJRA members will be holding their annual “yard sale” during the Edinburgh rodeo. Families are encouraged to bring the gear, clothes, equipment and tack that they are no longer using to set up a table at their trailer. Our General Membership meeting will also be held to elect the officers and board for the 2012-2013 rodeo season. Be thinking about positions and people you would like to have representing our association.
www.ijra.org
We are looking forward to a summer of excitement and the memories that will be made as we travel the rest of this season. Follow up with us next month to see who will be traveling to Gallup, NM, and find out what exciting things are happening in IJRA.
Page 43
Our weekend at the Hoosier Horse Fair was fun and very busy. We had our table set up in the Kid’s Corral and met many nice families we hope will join our organization. IJRA Princess, Lois Thomas, was on hand to talk to the kids and did a great job of promoting our association. IJRA had four different sessions on the schedule where families interested in learning about rodeo and IJRA could stop by and get information. CHRISTIAN COWBOY COLLECTION
The Shirt Off Your Back
w/ Christa Conway
For some reason this month the phrases, “Hats off to Him” and “He’d give you the shirt off his back” have been rolling around in my head. I have no idea why, other than I figure God must be trying to show me something. It started when I was at a 4H meeting with the kids and one of the girls had forgotten her cowboy boots. Gracie immediately offered hers and although they were too small, it made me realize how sometimes the smallest gestures can remain with someone. Of course I was proud of my youngest child and I got to thinking of other instances where I have witnessed quick action on someone’s part to spare another person heartache or embarrassment. This is where my mind went. Most people expect there to be some sort of dress code at a barrel race, especially if you have competed in rodeos before. In rodeo competition the competitors are expected to be dressed with long sleeve shirts and hats if they are anywhere near the arena. (Although some stock contractors are very lenient about this rule, it still exists.) But usually no real surprises occur while at a rodeo as far as apparel and gear are concerned. I have, however, been to more than one barrel race before where the dress code was unknown by someone getting ready enter the arena. More often than not, a fellow competitor has realized that “Bill” has on a ball cap and yells out for him to take his hat off as he is entering the arena. Or “Sally didn’t wear a long sleeve shirt and “Betty” offers hers at the last minute....literally giving her the shirt off of her back as she approaches the gate for her run. I have also witnessed the person saved from a DQ enter the arena to set a new fast time followed by a congratulations from the hat hollerer or the shirt sharer. Those are the kind of things that I want my kids to witness. It would be so easy to allow that person who is known to be a “tough” competitor to make his or her run without tipping them off on the dress code and letting them take a DQ.... eliminating one of the competition. But, what would Jesus have to say about that? “Well, they should read the showbill,” you might say. Or “Not my problem, I’m not their keeper.”
Page 44
Here is what I found in God’s word that applies to all of us about how to treat our brothers and sisters. 1 John 2:10 He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is no occasion for stumbling in him. 1 John 3:17 But whoso hath this world’s goods and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up the compassion of his heart from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him? 1 John 4:21 And this commandment we have from Him: that he who loveth God love his brother also. Romans 14:19 Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another.
Edify another.......I especially like the last verse. If you look up the word “edify” in the dictionary, it means to enlighten. Enlighten another.....which can also mean to teach someone, intruct them, build them up. Don’t you think that when you do something nice for someone else - your brother or sister - that you edify them? That you build them up....instruct them somewhat by example. I know I wouldn’t be knocking Bill or Betty for their act of kindness. If anything, I’d be telling me kids, “Did you see what Betty just did? That’s what we should do for each other.” And it is true - that’s what we should do, when given a chance, we should look out for one another, set an example of kindness for those around us and edify another. Until next month.... Happy Trails & God Bless! Christa
On the Trail
By Brother Brad Curtis of Mountain Top Cowboy Church
THE THUMPER
The sun began to set As the sky grew cold and grey We were ridin` back to camp Yep callin` it a day
I don’t mind walkin` But I sure could use a ride The valley where I’m headed Well it’s purty deep and wide
Trip said thumper grab your gear And get ready to hit the trail You say you need a ride I get you one from hell
So this ol bronc Well he ain’t got a chance Cause I’ll give him some iron And have a cowboy dance
When we got to camp Had a hot cup and a bite Time to tell some stories Like every other night
Trip jumped up Said beat all I’ve ever seen Ya preacher I have a pony But he’s still a bit green
He rope the meanest bronc That was in the herd As the thumper stood there He never said a word
I ain’t just a preacher I’m ridin` for the Brand And I’ll thump this here bronc Like I do the bible in my hand
We were gathered around the fire When he come limpin` in It was that bible thumper Who preached about hell and sin
You get you some rest In the morning` have some chow And if I were you I’d start prayin` now
He said boy God bless you This fire is a heavenly sight Do you mind if I warm up Maybe sleep here tonight
The thumper bedded down As Trip stomped away The boy looked at each other They’d never seen him this way
Trip got the bronc saddled It was quite a fight Handin` him the reins Said preach he’ll be alright The thumper said God bless you I know he’s a bit green But this pony will do just fine He’s really not that mean
It was then Trip spoke up Said preacher you can stay But before sun rise
Before the sun rose Trip kicked the thumpers feet Said preach get up Grab some chow to eat
You need to be on your way The thumper said about that Do you have a horse to lend My pony came up lame He needs time to mend
The thumper blessed his food As the boys all dug in He just thanked the Lord Said nothing` about hell and sin
Luke 6:35 But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil
Then the thumper said Trip I was once just like you Didn’t care for preachers Or the work they do But Lord got ahold of me Then he said with a grin Now I preach about hell And repentin` of our sin
One Last (& most important) thought… Salvation is a gift and a choice......
Read past issues of our Christian Cowboy Collection and the Christian Barrel Racer’s Newsletter at the website below!
Jesus died on the cross as the final sacrifice. When He was resurrected on the 3rd day, he defeated Satan for us. All we have to do is believe that He beat death and acknowledge it with our words. If we believe that and accept Him as our personal savior…we are promised eternal life with Him in Heaven. You can’t earn your way into Heaven; you have to believe your way there. So many people think they “aren’t good enough” to get to Heaven… But… Salvation is a GIFT from God and you don’t earn a gift. Gifts are something someone gives to you and for the gift to be yours, you have to accept it. All we have to do is accept that wonderful gift. I know I have…won’t you? But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. Romans 5:15
For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Romans 10: 9-10
Mystery of the Month This month’s Mystery group includes a few ladies who have been included in our Mystery on an individual basis before. Can you identify all of our pretty cowgirls? If you can correctly identify our cowgirls, tell us why they are pictured together, include a year.....and give us as much information as possible....you can win your choice of a one year subscription to The Horse Resource, a “Horsey Hat” or a “Horsey-T.” Please send us your photos from the past....we’d like to use them in our Mystery of the Month. Horses, people, events, etc... Send via email to: thehorseresource@msn. com or mail to The Horse Resource 12601 S CR 200 W Muncie, IN 47302 We will return your original photos to you.
We Have A Winner!
Our April Mystery winner is Lori WIlliams (with a little help from Debbie Williams!) Lori & Debbie knew that our mystery cowboy is Myron Humbert. Myron was also called “Hop” or “Barney” at the horse shows. The horse shown was called Cheetah and the year was approximately 1959-1962. The picture was taken during the Upland Labor Day Rodeo in Upland, Indiana. Myron is no longer with us, but some of his family are still involved in the horse industry. We recieved emails from family members who were very excited to see his picture in our Mystery of the Month! Congratulations to Lori, she chose to receive a FREE year’s subscription to The “Fast” Horse Resource.
Correction!
We have a correction for our February Mystery group of people. Teresa (Haffner) Meyers contacted us to let us know that we had misidentified one of our ladies from our Contest Riders Association Board of Directors. The first lady on the left is actually Leslie Yarger, instead of Susie Frauhiger. Thanks for setting us straight, Teresa! They are from Left to Right: Pete Frauhiger, Leslie Yarger, Genie (Prescott) Reidy, Teresa (Haffner) Meyers, Tootie Rice, Bill Finney, Terry Rice and Jerry Cobb.
Do You Still Like Playing? Help Us Out..... We are running low on photos.....Please send us your older photos of horsemen and women (and kids) that are still active in the horse business today. Or if you have pictures of a well known horse or event....that will mix things up a bit. We’re up for some new mysterys if you are!! Keep sending us those photos!! Send via email to thehorseresource@msn.com or mail to 12601 S CR 200 W Muncie, IN 47302 Page 59
