LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
M
y arms have color! While some people refer to this as a “farmer’s tan,” I choose to call it my “cowgirl’glow.” It is a sure sign that spring has sprung and riding outside doesn’t include coveralls and earmuffs. (Finally! btw...)
By the time you read this issue, the Kentucky Derby will have most likely already named a winner for 2013. This year marks the 139th Derby. We will again be including a feature article with some great pictures from Steve Heuertz in an upcoming issue. If you enjoy Steve’s work, I’m sure you will be looking forward to it as much as me! This issue features the International Barrel Racing Association’s Futurity and Preferred Show from Lewisburg, Ohio. Check out the IBRA News section to see the coverage, results and pictures. On a personal note, we’ve been super busy around here between the magazine and the horses. I have been wearing several different hats and sometimes forget which one I actually have on.... foaling babies is a tiresome task! I am sure some of you out there can relate....(not much sleep for me lately.) But aren’t those cute little long-legged creature worth it? I always chuckle when I give a head count of horses at the barn and have to add one (or two) after a long night. It seems surreal that when we went to bed we had, say, 24 horses and when everyone wakes up the next day there are 25. (Not sure why, but that just makes me smile.) Until next month....enjoy the sunshine and warmer days on the back of your horse.....and while you’re there remember to count your blessings on horseback! God Bless and Ride Safe, Christa Conway
A Little “Barrel Talk”
We have included another special section of “A Little Barrel Talk” for you this month. Look for it across from the Mystery of the Month!.....remember to visit www.barrelhorseworld.com to read more Barrel Talk.

News Spring is here in the Midwest. With thawing snow and budding trees you are probably itching to get out in the stalls and sort through the inventory of saddles, tack, and equipment you have collected over the years.
About Horse Saddle Shop: Horse Saddle Shop started in January of 2000. Finding its roots in the small town of Bremen, IN, it has since become a major online saddle and western apparel dealer. In 2012 Horse Saddle Shop has serviced horse owners and western apparel lovers in 50 states and over 45 countries becoming the largest dealer of western saddles for seven of the leading saddle manufacturers.
If you find yourself in the market for a new saddle, here are five saddle fitting myths to keep in mind as you search for the perfect fit.
For more information, visit www.HorseSaddleShop.com or visit us at 1205 W. Plymouth St. in Bremen, IN.Â
5 Saddle Fitting Myths Every Horse Owner Should Know
Myth #1: One size fits all. We frequently find ourselves explaining that one size saddle does not fit all horses. This seems like basic information, but for a first-time horse owner, it can be baffling to find that saddles not only come with different seat sizes for the rider, but they also come with different tree sizes for your horse. Regardless of how much your horse weighs or how wide you think his back is, measuring just to make sure can save you the headache of returning an ill-fitting saddle. Need more help? You can download our free gullet templates at www.HorseSaddleShop.com. Myth #2: I’ll be able to buy a saddle that fits two different horses. There is a rare exception to this myth, and that is if you have two horses that are extremely similar in weight, back width, back length, and wither shape. But a mere 25 pounds in the wrong spot, a 3 inch shorter back, or a slightly higher wither can mean a saddle fitting one horse and hurting another. If you are shopping for two horses, we recommend focusing on one horse at a time instead of trying to come up with a compromise between the two. Compromising saddle fit is, quite frankly, compromising your horse’s comfort, and therefore, his behavior. Myth #3: A good saddle pad will solve my saddle fitting problems. Many horse owners think that putting a good saddle pad under an ill-fitting saddle will alleviate pinching, slipping, or uneven pressure. Good saddle pads can cause the saddle to fit better. There is much technology in the pad industry to help a saddle fit better and you should take advantage of that technology. However, padding-up to help eliminate sores from a poor fitting saddle is not a good choice. Many times, padding up will just magnify the fitting issues you are already experiencing. Myth #4: All saddles that claim to be semi-quarter horse have the same gullet width. There are many variations to this myth. The truth is that the saddle industry uses terms loosely. Semi-quarter horse bars are often referred to as quarter horse bars, but others use the term quarter horse bars to describe wide bars, so the same saddle can be given different terms. This is very confusing to someone buying their first saddle. We have tried to wrestle this myth to the ground in our shop by standardizing our terms. We apply the term “medium” to regular, narrow, or semi-quarter horse bars and the term “full” to wide, full quarter horse bars. Myth #5: I have to be an expert to tell if my saddle fits properly. With all the helpful articles on saddle fitting on the web today, it can feel like you have to know a textbook full of information to be able to select a well-fitting saddle. Many customers call feeling exasperated wondering, “Is it really THAT hard?” No, it isn’t! All you have to be sure of is your horse and your saddle needs - no one can be an expert on those two areas but you! Here are a few tips: If you are having a specific problem, like white hairs on your horse or saddle slippage, troubleshoot those areas first. If you know your horse’s build and figure out what size tree will fit, half of your work is done. Most saddle fitting problems arise from a saddle that - “doesn,t fit!

Equine Leg Health: When it Comes to Protection, Don’t Just Wing It Tallahassee, FL (April 20, 2013) – Did you know?
One fly can carry over 33 million disease-causing microorganisms on the inner and outer surfaces of its body. Now, think of everything a fly crawls on in your barn and surrounding environment. It’s a gnarly list of possibilities, not including other farms and horses it visited before landing at your address. Flies rarely travel far from where they were hatched, but can be lured by attractive odors and piggyback long distances on air currents in a quest for food and places to reproduce. While the philosophical question, “How many angels fit on the head of pin?” re-
News mains unanswered, these less-ethereal winged visitors gain entry into buildings through openings not much larger. Flies transmit disease primarily because they feed on waste, decaying matter, and feces whose bacteria then sticks to its mouth, footpads and hairlike tendrils. Compound this with the fact that flies defecate roughly every four to five minutes and -- because they have no teeth -- take nourishment in liquid form, spewing vomitus or spittle laden with bacteria on solid food and letting it dissolve before eating, and the result is a perfect delivery system for infection. It’s enough to never let you look at flies the same way again, and more importantly, you don’t want to look at them spitting and worse on your horse’s legs. Is it any wonder why equine legs begin to look ravaged before summer has barely begun? So in an effort to protect them, we opt for spraying gallons of insecticide or essential oil-based products on the animals we love in an effort to rid them of the ones we loathe. Unfortunately, flies elude the spray, our horses soak up chemicals they don’t deserve, and we spend too much money on too many products wasted in pursuit of temporary, topical solutions.
Festivals & Concerts
Thankfully, Summer Whinnys™ socks for horses are taking equine leg protection to a whole new level. Raymond Petterson, president of Sox For Horses, Inc., originally created his summertime socks to protect his own horses’ legs from biting flies and put an end to the concussive damage and psychological aggravation he saw from relentless stomping: “Their hooves were falling apart. A trim might last two weeks and then their hooves began to chip and tear as if they hadn’t been trimmed in months. I could almost see my older mare, Evie, who suffered from arthritis, wince with each stomp in her effort to shake them off.” It wasn’t long before the Florida horseman delved into the science of fibers. “I knew that no matter how well a sock could offer fly protection, it also had to be cool and comfortable during the heat of the summer.” Science led him to the moisture management fibers Sox For Horses still uses today to spin its custom yarns for Summer Whinnys™, fibers that draw moisture from the skin while simultaneously creating a cool environment around the leg. “I took the best moisture management fiber in the industry and put its technology to use on equine legs,” Petterson said. He also incorporated a fiber embedded with ionic copper and silver that would never wash out. The result was cool, breathable protection that offered a clean environment around the leg. “Copper and silver ions inhibit the growth of bacteria, fungi, and mold in the socks. The more you wash them, the better the silver and copper work to keep sock fibers clean. For those wanting to keep the flies and dirt off open sores on legs, that’s important.” Petterson didn’t stop there. Sox For Horses and its Summer Whinnys™ allow legs safe range of motion. “There is no unsafe level of compression to these socks. They may fall after a prolonged period of running around a pasture, but they aren’t going to hurt a horse if the socks slip. I also didn’t want them so thin that they could roll and create a ‘rubber-band on the leg.’ You have to think these things out very carefully when it comes to horses.”

American Quarter Horse Association April 4, 2013 Fearless Freda is AQHA’s newest Dam of Distinction. A powerful little mare is a fearless representative of a Texas family’s breeding operation, and she has earned laurels both as a broodmare and as an American Quarter Horse runner herself. Now Fearless Freda has been named a Dam of Distinction by the American Quarter Horse Association. Bred by the Gentry Brothers of Lubbock, Texas, and was named for their mother, Fearless Freda is owned by Robert “Bob” Gentry of Lubbock, who died January 17, 2013. News 2013 IPRA Southeast Region Finals Scheduled By: Tammie Hiatt Gay, GA will be home to the IPRA Southeast Region Finals on November 1 & 2, 2013. After holding their first IPRA rodeo in 2012, the committee was very excited to have the opportunity to step up to the next level of rodeo competition. IPRA contestants that are in the top 10 of their event are eligible to compete in their region’s finals. “It’s going to be a very big deal,” said Susan Pritchet, rodeo chairperson. “We are really working hard to make this a great event. It’s going to be all about the contestants at this rodeo.” “We will have $1,500 added per event, including breakaway roping. We will also have trophy buckles for the winners,” said Susan. “We are very, very excited to be able to do this rodeo. “

The town of Gay, GA has a population of 100 people, give or take, but the events the community hosts have definitely put them on the map. Twice a year the Cotton Pickin’ Fair draws entertainers and artists to the tiny town to bring back a bit of nostalgia to present day fair goers. “Our town is just a little drive through town. We have a post office and a convenience store, that isn’t always that convenient, “ laughed Susan. “It’s a quiet little town, except when we are having an event. We always welcome all of the visitors, but are glad when it quiets back down.”

“The rodeo will be held at the Quercus Cattle Company’s covered arena. The arena is 52,000 sq. ft. We host a variety of horse events, from clinicians to ropings. I’ve been involved with several of the high school rodeos we have put on,” said Susan. “It’s a totally self-contained facility. We have concessions, cabins and bunkhouses available and we have just added 40 r.v. hookups. When we are having an event, people will come out to the arena just for the food. Our ranch manager does the bar-b-que and people love it.” “We are working on an entire week of events leading up to the rodeo,” said Susan. “Since Halloween is the night before the rodeo, we are talking with the area churches on having their “Trunk or Treat” night at the arena. My goal is to have 100 cars there for the kids. We’re also planning a gospel night on Wednesday and we are trying to put together a match barrel race for Tuesday. We’ll have more information on these activities as it gets closer.” “We are getting a lot of sponsorship involvement as well. The Meriwether Department of Safety, Ram Rodeo, Priefert, Georgia Power, Southern River Electric and several local sponsors are wanting to get involved.” “Robin Brooks and Southern Rodeo Company will be producing the rodeo. Proceeds from the rodeo will benefit the Wounded Warrior Project. It is a wall listing local people that have been killed in action. We also help buy fire equipment for the Meriwether Department of Safety,” said Pritchet. “This will be a rodeo worth qualifying for,” said Susan. S.I. (Speed Index) and Barrel Horses BarrelRacer017 Posted 2013-04-18 9:57 PM (#6710787) Subject: S.I.’s.... Member Posts: 18 Hey, so im looking for a new barrel horse, and i was wondering, what is a good SI for a barrel horse. And i want one that i can be competitive with. Do you think a horse with an 80 S.I still has the potential to excel in barrel racing? HurleyGirl Extreme Veteran Posts: 362 Location: The Frozen North If you do a search you will probably find lots of old discussions on this. SI doesn’t really tell you a lot but 80 would be plenty. Lots of horses with really low speed indexes (like 60’s and lower) turn into very successful barrel horses. There are so many other factors involved....not being successful on the track certainly doesn’t mean they don’t have the speed to be a barrel horse. A really high SI is usually way more speed than you’d reach during a barrel run anyways (although it never hurts to know they can run!) I’ve bought a couple of horses off the track and there are many other factors that I would put more importance on than what their SI was. Good Luck Honeymoney Elite Veteran Posts: 1085 What a horse does on the track has little bearing on the kind of barrel horse it will make. I have a friend who has a 1D barrel horse that has a SI of 68. This horse was always in the 1D no matter what the competition. The horse is now retired. I have a horse with a SI of 80 and could easily be a pro rodeo horse--we have one big problem. I am OLD and do not ride as well as I used to and do not run her that hard. I have another horse that I have run 1D times on and he has a SI of 85. Speed Index really does
not affect how well a horse runs barrels. One other thing is that most barrel horses have never been on the track. The only way that a horse gets a REAL speed index is to have actually raced. 1 likes 0 dislikes
comes to SI it makes little difference BUT how they ran in the first 100 yards does.
wierqh Expert Posts: 1548 Location: Kansas I was told by a race horse man that the SI doesn’t mean as much if it is beyond 200 yards on the track since a barrel pattern isn’t that long. What they run from the starting gate to the first 100 yards is what to ask about. His stud he had at the time had a SI of 81 officially at the longer distance but he said he would clock SI 105 at 100 yards and 95 at 200 yards. That is just what I was told.
This, first 100 yards is what I believe counts.
BarrelRacer017 Member Posts: 18 Thanks for all your inputs! This really made me feel better about the horse i could possibly be taking home soon! This really helped! :) livexlovexrodeo I’m Cooler Offline Posts: 5466 Location: Pacific Northwest Like they said, SI doesn’t mean much. The horse I started running, who has been hitting the 2D (and I’m pretty sure our first barrel is what’s keeping us out of the 1D) has an SI of about 50. She never placed better than 6th in any of her 7 races. I know a lot of other 1D barrel horses with low SIs too. If you like the way the horse moves and it seems athletic, I wouldn’t worry about the SI at all. jbhoot Extreme Veteran Posts: 524 I have bought many off the track. When it

Other thoughts: I read once where Marthy Josie said a speed index in the 80’s was plenty enough speed for a barrel horse. That said in the past few years as barrel horses have gotten faster and faster, Judd Little made a comment something like this “I want one that can make a mistake in the turns and still clock”. I have bought the “tanner times” and can see where some horse can really smoke the turns but still land in the 3D because they are just not fast enough. Hate to make a good run that looks like a winner but is just too slow. I now buy for speed, guess we will see how far that gets us. jbhoot Extreme Veteran Posts: 524 I agree, I just sold a 1D horse to Texas for a lot of money that was exactly what Jud said. He only had a SI of 83 and could make a mistake on a turn and still make it up to always place in top of the 1D. I will always go with fast over turns! Calibarrelrcr Expert Posts: 1605 Location: California They can be all over the place. My good horse I ran in high school had an SI 47. He went to Nationals in poles and barrels, was an AQHA world champion in poles and barrels, and won me a lot in Jr and High school rodeos. I also had a futurity mare that had an SI 98 that couldn’t rate a barrel to save

her life. So the high SI did us no good. casualdust07 You get what you give Posts: 8991 Location: Texas The horse I run now has an SI of 80. she ran 350-400 yard races...I also had a AA mare who was an 870 horse and she was no good for barrels (obviously..870 is LONG distance for QHs) My 5YO can cruise through and be within half a second because she can cover so much ground. Because of that, she’s stayed pretty sound mentally and physically. I have another horse who has a ton of talent... but not the raw speed. because of that, for him to lay down a 1D run- which he can any day- he has to put it ALL out there. He has to have perfect barrels and he has to be running 100%. BarrelRacer017 Member Posts: 18 Thanks everyone :) I guess it kinda depends on the horse. and we’ll just have to wait and see. I just bought him yesterday. Hes 3, and i cant wait to finish him! Puddy Elite Veteran Posts: 696 I was told that an SI when given is based on the track, and that horse could have a different SI on a different track? I do not know that much about it but it made sense. My gelding can completely muck up a barrel and still clock.. My colt isnt as fast,.. he is going to be a turning machine though, so it will be interesting to see how that plays out.. I am hoping his stride gets longer then I can have both!

Chris Coffey and A Flash of Romance Dominate the 2013 IBRA Futurity
Chris Coffey and Streaking Romance are the reigning back to back IBRA National Champions and they proved their abilities in Lewisburg, OH winning Sundays Open and the Second Go Round of the Derby. There was a new romance however, that had everyone’s attention at Circle G Arena. Streaking Romance’s little sister, A Flash of Romance, won the first go of the Futurity, ran Second in the second go and won the Futurity Average. The four year old also ran the second fastest time of the weekend with a smokin 15.552. Coffey brought in a total of $3,416 on his Futurity philly, an additional $795 on Streaking Romance and $917 on Guy Cash Perk for a total weekend earnings of $4,854!
Friday Open 4D - Tim Butler
Congratulations to Chris and owner R.M. “Buddy” Alexander of Glasgow KY. Carol Ann Coffey, Chris’ wife had the following to tell us of Mr. Alexander. “Buddy owns both A Flash of Romance and Streaking Romance. He was also the owner of Des Delight. Buddy is a long time friend of the Coffey family. Calvin Coffey, Chris’ dad, rode for Buddy when Chris was just a kid. They had a horse by the name of Hot Shot Rey who was an awesome horse and famous in his day. Buddy spends most of his time practicing law full time but on occasion slips out to the farm to watch his colts ride.” The first horse through the gate Friday night set the pace for the entire weekend. MI IBRA member Kim Kegler aboard U Bug Me Frenchman scorched the pattern with a 15.524 raking in $371 and a new trophy jacket! Charity & Contributions
With each preferred show the IBRA selects a charity to support. St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital will be the benefactor of the 2013 Futurity & Preferred Show held in Lewisburg, OH. “St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, founded by the late entertainer Danny Thomas, is one of the world’s premier centers for research and treatment of pediatric cancer and other catastrophic childhood diseases. St. Jude is the only pediatric cancer research center where families never pay for treatments that are not covered by insurance. No child is denied treatment because of a family’s inability to pay.” The IBRA will contribute $500 to the Hospital plus additional monthly contributions in recognition of our event. Johnathan White performed and delivered Gods message to the crowd at the Preferred Show in Lewisburg. Johnathan came highly recommended from the Needhams and he did a great job especially when you consider that it was the first Barrel Race he had ever preached at! Thank you to Johnathan for making it possible for us to have Cowboy Church and bringing a great message to our show.

Dawn and Clea present the Panty Raid, An IBRA Super Show
The 1st ever “Panty Raid” Futurity and IBRA Super Show served as the breakout show to raise money for awards and added money for the Best of the Best 2013. The show was a great success! Dawn Shirey had the following to say about the event: “The Best Little Panty Raid Futurity in Ohio was to say the least eventful. We had riders from 6 states and Canada enjoy the weekend. Ran over 1400 runs and it was a longggggg weekend but packed with barrel racers of every caliber. From the 1D to the 4D to the Pee Wee everyone that entered the arena was looking for a chance at the some big bucks or the beautiful Cactus Target saddle, the 2nd place jacket or the 3rd place Equine Mega Omega supplement from Becky Johnson. If nothing else they were looking for a good clean run that would let them enjoy their sport they love and if they went home empty handed then maybe they would take home some IBRA points. If the hat fits.....
I
t’s now officially straw-hat season (it has been for a little while). It’s no secret that hats are not a requirement in a lot of the barrel races unless you are at a rodeo or a higher-level show. Personally I think more people should pay attention to the hats they are wearing & if they fit properly. A proper fitting hat should never come off in the arena & you don’t need a stampede string if you hat fits properly. Recently I went to Texas to visit my friends at Anderson Bean Boot Company & we stopped at Catalena Hatters for a hat for my sister, Melanie. Being from Ohio we don’t have hat shops or even a lot of options for a nice hat. We took a tour of the factory & Melanie had a very nice custom straw hat made. She was able to pick out her hatband & trimmings for the brim.
Page 22
FASHION SECTION Her hat turned out very nice & it’s something that no one else around here has. The pattern is a little Victorian & fits Melanie’s personality.
Design a Hat to Fit Your Personality
You can go into Catalena Hatters & design your hat from start to finish. There are so many different hats to chose from especially for straw, no more boring straw hats right?
Each hat is handled with care & shaped by hand & with machines. There are a lot of steps that go into making an awesome hat from start to finish. If you are ever in Bryan, Texas I highly recommend you making a pit stop there.

I am truly blessed to have the opportunity to speak to kids on a regular basis. I don’t know if it makes any difference in them, but I know it does in me. At the end of several long days, it energized me and reminded me of my purpose. Unfortunately, it’s also a reminder of wasted words and opportunities, as a parent and an adult. As I look back now, I know I spent too much time trying to create a product rather than enjoying the development of an individual. I still believe the primary parental responsibility is to “train up a child in the way he/she should go”. Instilling Godly, fundamental principles of morals and values by whatever means necessary is a God-given duty and privilege. And by no means, am I suggesting I should have set around the fire, roasting marshmallows, singing Kumbaya and trying to be a friend not a father. For me, “LivExceptionally” is a deliberate, work-like pursuit. In the innocence and energy of youth in many of the kids I meet, I see a natural inclination to live exceptionally. Yes, my old and cynical friends, I know and I told them last night, their lives are relatively stress-free. They haven’t experienced the responsibility of adulthood, which they seem to want to reach so quickly. But on their faces, in a twinkle in
their eye or resounding in their words; I sense their unbridled optimism and untapped potential. The responsibility of parents is immense, but the privilege of being a parent is even greater. Kids are young colts or fillies, who desire to please so much, but unabashedly buck and kick at any attempt to be “trained.” Daily sometimes, they will kick up their heels and run wild across the pasture. But, they really can’t go any further than the boundaries of the fences we have set. I wish I had spent a little more time enjoying the run across the pasture. I was raised by a father who never praised or encouraged me, but rather, demanded perfection. I am humbly able to say I praised more than I corrected, but there are times that I wished praise tipped the scale much greater than it did. I guess my point is this - we, as parents or adults with influence in the lives of young people, have been blessed so much. Children are incredible gifts from God. We need to be daily intentional about their “training up” and ever mindful of their developing character. But from the front row seats we have to observe their lives, we should be dazzled by their brilliance, amazed by their potential and encouraged by their futures. LivExceptionally, Chris

epticemia is defined as systemic disease associated with the presence and persistence of pathogenic bacteria and their toxins in the bloodstream. This sometimes occurs when a foal develops a bacterial infection and the younger the foal the more dangerous the situation. The infection can be in the intestinal tract, umbilicus, lungs, or any other part of the body. This condition is caused by the spread of bacteria throughout the system hence the infection is no longer localized. “Bacteremia is the term for bacteria in the blood; septicemia occurs when both the bacteria and their toxins circulate through the body. It is mainly the toxins that do the damage. The only way a foal becomes septicemic is when bacteria gain entry into the body, and the most common entry routes in young foals is orally (intestinal tract), respiratory tract (pneumonia), or through the umbilicus. Toxins from certain types of bacteria ingested by the foal can damage the gut wall and leak through into the bloodstream where they start attacking all the organs of the body. The foal soon goes into shock as various organs shut
Page 26

Foal Septicemia
Ask the Vet with Dr. Steve Fisch, DVM down, and unless treated in the very earliest stages of shock, he generally dies. Once the foal goes into shock, it is very difficult to reverse the condition.
Once bacteria gain entrance into the body, they may start releasing toxins depending on the type of bacteria. The toxins cause a dysfunction in hemodynamics, which means that suddenly the foal has low blood pressure and is going into septic shock. The body is doing several things to try to protect itself. The blood pressure drops, the heart rate increases, and temperature rises to try to fight off the infection. The foal starts breathing heavily to lower the body temperature because of the high fever. The body starts using a lot of energy for this and the foal becomes weak since a young foal does not have energy reserves like an older horse. This weakness causes abnormalities in heart rate and intestinal function. At the same time, there is poor circulation to the gut so it shuts down. This causes the foal to not nurse properly. If he tries to nurse, the stomach just fills up because nothing can move on through, so he quits nursing. Bacterial toxins then affect the liver and, eventually, the other organs of the body. There is multi-organ failure. If septicemia is suspected, a CBC and blood chemistry may help confirm the diagnosis. If there is a low white blood cell count those blood cells are being used up as they fight the battle. There may be electrolyte abnormalities and low glucose levels. Blood cultures may be taken before antibiotics are given to determine exactly what kind of bacteria is causing the problems. The foal’s chest, abdomen and umbilicus may be ultrasounded to get an idea where this infection may be coming from and further confirm the diagnosis. We would like to help you get your horse health questions answered by a knowledgeable equine veterinarian. Submit your questions to us via email, we will present them to a qualified veteranarian that specialize in equine health and then publish the question along with the vet’s response in a future issue of The Horse Resource. A foal can also become septicemic before birth in the mare’s uterus if the mare has an infection. In the first day of life, the foal may suddenly develop a septic joint and the most common way to get the infection that quickly was before birth. The way an unborn foal becomes septicemic is through the bloodstream from the placenta. Infection enters the foal’s bloodstream and can travel wherever it wants to go. Those foals are already sick when they are born. They can be very ill and may even act like dummy foals. If you look at them closely after they are born, they may have white blood cells or puss in their eyes. Those foals may have only a 50-50 prognosis for survival.
Whatever route the bacteria entered, the treatment is similar except if the entry route was the umbilicus. If the umbilicus is infected then it may be surgically removed. In all cases systemic antibiotics are given. With some foals hyperimmune plasma may be given because it is high in antibodies. This might help fight the infection. Antibiotics and supportive care are critical to recovery. We just try to keep the body going buying time for it to win the battle against the infection. The main thing that is recommend for preventing septicemia is a clean environment. Clean foaling stalls, clean equipment, clean mare and clean handlers are all very important. Make sure the foal nurses very soon after birth but also make sure he doesn’t lick up a lot of contamination as he searches for his mother’s milk. The mare’s colostrum is very important because it has the antibodies he needs to combat common infections. If the mare has been leaking milk beforehand make sure you have a supply of colostrum ready to give to the foal. Your equine veterinarian can also do a blood test to determine whether or not the foal received enough antibodies or whether his passive immunity should be increased by other means such as plasma. Foal septicemia can be a deadly and costly disease. Foals should be checked at least twice daily for the first few months of life so that this condition can be caught in its earlier stages. If you get ahead of the bacteria and toxins in the race for the foal’s life, the foal has a much better chance of winning the battle.

Horses: My main girl is Mi Miz Ante, “Annie” 16 year old bay Appendix Quarter Horse out of Up the Ante. She & I really click together and we have done really well. Every time I call her name, she runs right to me. I have had her for about 1 ½ years now. I am so thankful that I was able to purchase her from the Kuiper family. Cody Kuiper ran her and his grandmother Norma Quisenberry before him. Their family has become dear new friends of mine. Annie hates my newest horse Opal. She is very jealous when I spend time with her! I have had Opal for about 8 months now. My dad purchased her last fall after the IBRA state show from Kevin & Rikki Morse. Opal aka “Sunlight Drifter” is a 13 year old grey Quarter Horse mare out of PC Bronson. She’s a goofball. She’s sweet as can be on the ground, but when you get on, it’s all business. She’s very strong, so hang on :). Then I have Suzy, a 23 year old Appaloosa, I’ve had since I was about 10. She used to be a barrel horse until she went blind and stopped loading into the trailer. She’s a rescue horse so she is very standoffish to most people, but very sweet. She has trust issues since she can’t see very well so I’m the only one who can ride her without her being a nervous wreck. My mom and brother also have horses at our farm.
Page 32
TEEN CORRAL w/Clint Van Accomplishments with horses? I have been a 4-H horse & pony member for 8 years. I just started really competing serious in barrel racing when I lucked into clicking so well with Annie. Annie & I competed in our first show at Cloverdale in January 2012. We were able to work our way up in IBRA 1D youth points to be ranked #1 in Indiana by August. Unfortunately, I knocked a barrel at the State Show, but still took Reserve Champion in the Youth 1D, my first year out! I also took Annie to the IBRA Nationals in Louisville last October. It was a great experience. We didn’t place, but we were close! We had some great runs.
Favorites
Color-purple Subject : math Trailer : Platinum Coach Truck: Freightliner Pad: Impact Gel Food: Anything homemade Music: Country music Bling: All of it! I love anything that is sparkly and shiny.
Other Animals: I have quite a few dogs but they’re all over the place! My dog, Hazel, is a red mini Aussie. She goes everywhere with me! I have 2 dogs at my moms, a Great Pyrenees that watches over our horses at our farm, and my dad has a little dog.
Who taught you to ride? I started taking lessons with Meghan DurhamNewton when I was 7 years old. She and her family are still a great help to me. She is the one who helped me to find Annie. I also learned a lot from Connie Cressman. I have taken lessons from her over the years as well. She taught me a lot about jumping which has helps me with my barrel racing. You really have to have great balance to jump in an English saddle. Does your family ride? Yes, my family does ride, but not a lot. My 2 year old brother has a pony named Buck Buck. He does lead line barrel races & he is quite the little cowboy! My mom also has a trail/pleasure horse that she rides. Do you run barrels and poles? If so, what is your favorite and why? I run poles a little bit, but not very often. I’d rather run Barrels! Hobbies other than horses? I don’t really have any other hobbies. Horses pretty much take up my time! I do love to sing! It’s taken awhile for me to get the courage to sing in front of people. But with the encouragement of my family and friends, I have been doing it more lately. I have a sound system at home where I can do karaoke and if we are out somewhere with karaoke, I will get up and sing. The more I do it, the less nervous I get.
Favorite show and why? I like running at the C Bar C Expo center in Cloverdale. Annie likes large pens & Opal likes small pens. Cloverdale is like their compromise. It’s a really great facility and a lot of my friends go there. I also like going to my local outdoor shows in the summer like Stop 16 and Vigo Co. Fairgrounds. It’s a lot of fun to just hang out with your barrel racer friends. Your mentor and why? The Durham’s, Kuiper’s & Quisenberry’s are all great people and I look up to each and every one of them. Like I said before Meghan Durham taught me to ride when I was 7 years old and she and her family have helped me throughout the years. Also my good friend Rikki Morse has taken me under her wing and taught me a lot as well. I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for the support I have received from them and my Parents of course! The Kuiper’s and Quisenberry’s , which is where Annie came from, for the short time that I have known them, have been super supportive and cheer me on with whatever I do! Norma Quisenberry always has great advice for me and I always love talking with her! What has barrel racing taught you? Patience is the key. down, get back up and keep going. Never give up!
Any advice to any fellow barrel racers? I’m not one to give advice, but no matter what, just go out and have fun. Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Hopefully graduated from college , beginning a career in the horse industry. I know one thing for sure, I’ll still be barrel racing! Your personal goals? I’d like to qualify and go to the NBHA Youth World Show. I would also like to be on a College Rodeo and team and one day qualify for the NFR. Ride On,
Clint is a graduate of East Central High School. His parents are Terrie VanVolkenburgh and respectively Joe Trentman. He has grown up in the horse world, both parents have rode almost all their life...Clint's grandfather as some of you may remember was the late Terry VanVolkenburgh, who would run up and down the fences when his daughters would run barrels. Clint began barrel racing at the age of 4 with a pony, then went on to particpate in Jr. Rodeo and his favorite event was the sheep riding, hard to believe he is now a barrel racer. He has won the Ohio Youth NBHA and Indiana Youth and Open NBHA , he has also won the Congress youth barrel four times, and was runner up in the Congress Sweepstakes. He placed at Josey Jr. world numerous times, and won the NBHA Youth World 1D in 2006. He loves to barrel race and is now trying his hand at the futurities. In Clint's spare time he mows grass for a part time job and is also very active in his church where he and his cousins are bible school helpers. Clint also volunteers one day a week at a school in Cincinatti where he spends time tutoring other kids in reading.

Our clinic on March 30 was fabulous, 12 riders and 3 auditors. A Great bunch of first time shooters learning about gun safety, CMSA rules , clothing requirements and gun breaking their horses. By the time the clinic was winding up for the day, everyone was successfully shooting off their horse. We also had a clinic on Saturday, April 6th at the Faustman Ranch in Fairborn, Ohio. Some of the new riders from the weekend before came back for another day of learning about mounted shooting. We had 14 shooters and several auditors for this clinic, again with a 100% of the riders shooting off their horses and mule by the end of the day! When you sign up for a 1st Ohio clinic, bring your horse (any breed is welcome) or mule. We do ask that you make sure that you can handle your mounted shooting prospect while riding with one hand, a good handle is very important. The helping members of 1st Ohio share their knowledge and supply the holsters, guns and specially loaded blank ammunition. SAFETY is a most important factor to us. Our next clinic is April 27th at the Home of Joy Farm in Lancaster, Ohio, then May 24th at the Gymkhana Club Arena in Miamitown, Ohio. Plus… 1st Ohio is hosting a DWPQ (double world point qualifier) on the Saturday and Sunday, May 25 & 26 following the clinic in Miamitown. Everyone is Welcome to the clinic and the shoot! Indiana Rough Riders Howdy everyone! We thought this month we would answer some common questions we get this time of year from folks who are interested in Cowboy Mounted Shooting. Q: How do I train my horse to gunfire? A: If you want to get your horse off to a good start and it’s your first time I strongly urge you and your horse to attend a CMSA clinic hosted by one of the local clubs. This is where we usually have our quickest and best results. In 2011 IRR held a new shooter’s clinic in New Castle, IN. We had 18 new horses and at the end of the clinic we were shooting courses on 17 of them. There are ways to train your horse at home; however I strongly suggest you talk to a Cowboy Mounted Shooter for advice before starting. It’s easier to train a horse correctly from the start than it is to retrain a horse not started correctly. Q: How long does it take to train a shooting horse? A: This primarily depends on two things. One is the horse’s willingness to accept new obstacles, to negotiate the courses while being ridden one handed, and to accept gunfire. The other is how the rider/ trainer presents the whole package to the horse. Unfortunately, there are horses that never fully accept the gunfire even when wearing ear plugs and there are those that just don’t have the athletic ability to run and turn the courses. For the ones that do accept it all, it still takes generally a year of practice and competition to get most of the issues worked out and things working smoothly between horse and rider. Q: I bought a horse that’s been trained to gunfire for CMSA, would it be safe to shoot off of him in the woods? A: Not necessarily, most competition horses associate the gunfire with being in the arena and seeing the balloons so they are expecting to hear
the gunfire. If you take a shot at something out in the woods without the horse expecting it, things may not work out as well as you had hoped. A horse gets startled and jumps just like we do at a loud unexpected noise. Think of it this way, you may be lighting fire crackers all night long, throwing them out in front of everyone and not flinching at all, but, if someone puts one on the ground behind you and lights it unexpectedly you’ll most likely jump out of your skin when it goes off. Your horse reacts the same way. But don’t worry; there are ways to overcome this with your horse if you want to shoot off him in places other than competition. Q: What type of guns and holsters should I buy? A: The caliber and type of gun is a .45 long colt, single action, no rear site and a fixed front site. Manufacturer is a personal choice and we all have our favorites based on reliability, and of course, price. Given that, based on barrel length, grip width, weight, hammer design, and a few other things, I wouldn’t recommend buying anything until you’ve had a chance to handle a few different models and styles. Holsters are the same way. Side holsters, cross draws and front holsters have to all be considered. Once again, a clinic is an excellent place to do this. At most clinics, different styles of guns and holsters are available for you to handle, examine, evaluate. and use to help determine what’s best for you. One of the worst things you can do is spend a lot of money on a set of guns and holsters that you’re not pleased with when you start using them in competition. Q: What’s the general cost to attend a clinic? A: The clinic price varies from club to club depending on arena cost and a few other things. You can usually figure a range of $45 to $75 per person. Most clubs will have fliers on their website with information and cost on upcoming clinics. Q: Where are the shooting competitions for CMSA held? A: We are very fortunate to have three clubs in Indiana. The Indiana Rough Riders (IRR) in the Central and Southern part of the state. The Indiana Mounted Regulators (IMR) in the Northern part and the Illiana Rangers in the West/Southwest part of the state. There are also two clubs in Ohio, 1st Ohio and the Northern Ohio Clubs. All of these clubs have their own websites with schedules and locations of their shoots. If you live in Indiana you should be able to find a few competitions within an hour or two of your home. The club websites can be found by going to www.cmsa.com . Q: What’s the best advice you can give me for getting started in Cowboy Mounted Shooting? A: CLINIC!! CLINIC!! CLINIC!! I can’t stress this enough! Attend a clinic similar to the one IRR hosted this past month at the Henry County Saddle Club New Castle, Indiana.\ Check out the different styles of guns, holsters and period clothing. Listen to the instructors and don’t be afraid to ask questions. If you don’t want to wait to go to a clinic, go to one of the club web sites and call the president of a local club. We do have a few cowboys and cowgirls that give private lessons. ny one of us will be glad to help you get started in the right direction. This covers the most common questions I am normally asked about Cowboy Mounted Shooting. I hope it’s been informative and educational. If you have any other questions, please contact me at mac6gun@gmail .com or call at (765)561-3148. You can also contact any of the other CMSA club presidents. That’s all for this month, Keep those cylinders a spinnin’ and God Bless! Bryan McDonald, Indiana Rough Riders President

I Can’t Believe I’m Saying This.....
But, I must admit that “Miss Maybelline” has grown on me. Maybe I’m getting softer with age, maybe she is irresistible, maybe she wore me down. Whatever the case, she has won me over and I.....I actually like her. I mean, I admit, she is quite noisy and she does have A LOT of energy, but she also looks up to me. It’s kind of flattering and nice to have a youngster that follows me around and tries to imitate what I do. She pretty much is my shadow around the farm. Once the lady that lives here lets us outside and helps Miss Maybelline down the big steps, the little cutie is hot on my heels for most of the day. She does get distracted easily and takes out after Freckles and Duke once in a while, but I think they sometimes frighten her because they are so much bigger. Although, when they are snoozing, she thinks it is funny to run circles around them and bark. And, yes, I think it’s funny too!)
Honestly, she reminds me a lot of myself when I was a pup. (Other than the long ears, long tail and long body....) She has a mind of her own and isn’t afraid to speak her mind. I respect that. So...in honor of my new little “sidekick,” I have included some pretty cute pictures of our little ball of energy. I figured it was only fitting that we include a portion of a “portfolio.” I mean, her name is Maybelline! You have to admit, she is a cute little booger. And check out those ears! They definitely have a mind of their own.
O
Until next month, I’ll be passing along some wisdom to my new little friend on a daily basis.....

What a long weekend! Tis the season of back-to-back rodeos! The Indiana High School Rodeo Kids have been busy. April 5-7 IHSRA members spent three days doing janitorial services at the Hoosier Horse Fair. Have you ever heard of a fair dedicated just to horses? Well The Hoosier Horse Fair is just that. The Hoosier Horse Fair & Expo is a 3 day fair & expo celebrating and promoting the equine industry. Traditionally held in the month of April, the event includes horse demonstrations, live entertainment, educational presentations by horse clinicians and trainers, 4-H competitions and other youth activities, MaCeo (trick riding), and a large trade show. The Hoosier Horse Fair & Expo is the largest gathering in Indiana focused on the horse enthusiast. The Expo serves as the primary fundraiser for The Indiana Horse Council. This group impacts the growth and development of the horse industry. 200+ volunteers put on the Hoosier Horse Fair, and all the proceeds go back to the horse industry. You might have seen cowboys and cowgirls carrying around brooms and dustpans, each member of the IHSRA spent one (8) hour shift either morning or evening cleaning. The IHSRA Student Officers spent the

entire weekend managing the association’s booth. Let me just say it is hard sitting in one place all day; I don’t see how vendors do it. At the IHSRA Booth we had every thing rodeo going on, our goal was to show 9-12 graders what High School Rodeo is all about: promote western heritage and share our love for horses. The IHSRA Student Officers and I, also had the privilege of being interviewed by Better Horse Radio. We were able to express our love of horses and explain how the High School Rodeo has influenced our life and also what the Hoosier Horse Fair meant to us. The whole weekend was such an honor and the expressions of appreciation by those working and attending the event made it all worthwhile. Don’t You Worry, Don’t You Worry, Child... See Heaven’s Got A Plan For YOU. I was out in the barn the other day, talking to God....wait, let me go back. In the last month and a half I lost both of my Grandpa’s....I mentioned about my mom’s dad last month....then after the issue went to print, I lost my dad’s dad. (He was also saved, so we knew where he was going too - referring to last month’s subject.) While I was out in the barn the other day, I kept hearing a “cooing” sound. I finally discovered the origin of the cooing when I looked up on the barn peak while putting horses on the walker....it was a white dove following me around. This went on for a few days and I thought it was kind of cool that the dove showed up right after I lost my grandpas. It made me curious as to what the dove symbolizes in scripture. This is really jumped out at me when I started looking: Mark 1:9-10 And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan. And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him:
The Holy Spirit “like a dove” descending upon him....that’s what it made me think of....that the dove was a reminder that the Holy Spirit was with me. So...I began talking “to the dove” if you will, while I was doing the barn chores in the mornings. This went on for a few days and then one morning, I didn’t see the dove. No sign of it anywhere. That is when I thought to myself, “the dove may not be here, but the Holy Spirit is ALWAYS with me. I can talk to him anytime I want. What a peace I received just knowing that He is always available.... The cool part is that shortly after my realization I heard the “cooing” sound and noticed the dove above me in the rafters. Then, just like someone was speaking to me, as plain as day, the song on the radio seemed to grow louder and the words I heard streaming from the speakers were these: “Don’t you worry, don’t you worry, child...See heaven’s got a plan for you.” At that moment, I got chills when I thought about the words to the song. Listen, I know some will shake their heads about my so called “experience.” I mean, it
Page 42
may seem far fetched to some, and maybe you chuckle at what you may think is naïvety on my part, but for some reason, music seems to be a way that I really connect with the Holy Spirit. I feel like when the lyrics of a song pop into my head at just the right time, it is more than just a coincidence.
“I’ve been true to you, seems like speaking to me is the least that you could do.” (Just that one part of the song, over and over...)
I think when you are seeking Him, he will reveal himself and speak to you in so many different ways!
However He chooses to connect with you and you with Him...We just need to be tuned into the Holy Spirit....you see - He has a plan for ALL of us! Listen for his voice - whether it be a dove cooing or the words of a song. He wants to have communion with us because He loves us:)
One other time in particular sticks out to me. I had been falling away and not praying and spending time seeking Him like I should have been. I was at work and all day long I had an old song in my head (that I had not heard for a very long time) - it was the Statler Brothers -
When I took the time to stop and think about the words I was humming, talk about being humbled.
Happy Trails & God Bless! Christa

HEART OF GOLD Prickly Pete weren’t a bad man Just a bit misunderstood He never was much trouble But he wasn’t really good
We never seen him drinkin` At the Dirty Dog saloon And the iron that he carried Was an old Colts Dragoon
Every week while the boys Howled at the moon Pete rode on past The ol` Dirty Dog saloon
Now Pete was a cow hand Always shootin` straight He was always honest And never full of hate
So one Friday night The boys followed Prickly Pete He rode into town Down to the end of the street
Yep he rode down the street To the house for the needy Gav`em most of his pay Pete was anything but greedy
But Pete had a problem Like a many`a cowpoke Not a penny to his name He was always broke
The boys hid and watched They couldn’t believe their eyes When they told me I said it was a pack of lies
Then he’d ride back to ranch On that sorry nag Never tellin` the boy He didn’t boast or brag
He didn’t have much Just a couple of sorry nags And maybe a Sunday shirt He kept in his saddlebags
We thought ol Prickly Pete Well…was kind`a cold Turned out he weren’t onery But had a heart of gold
We now just call him Pete Cause he ain’t no fool Yep he taught the boys About the golden rule
Matthew 7:12 Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets. Proverbs 19:1 Better is the poor that walketh in his integrity, than he that is perverse in his lips, and is a fool. BY: Bro. Brad Curtis 10/20/11 Vilonia, AR

One Last (& most important) thought… Salvation is a gift and a choice......
Read past issues of our Christian Cowboy Collection and the Christian Barrel Racer’s Newsletter at the website below!
Jesus died on the cross as the final sacrifice. When He was resurrected on the 3rd day, he defeated Satan for us. All we have to do is believe that He beat death and acknowledge it with our words. If we believe that and accept Him as our personal savior…we are promised eternal life with Him in Heaven. You can’t earn your way into Heaven; you have to believe your way there. So many people think they “aren’t good enough” to get to Heaven… But… Salvation is a GIFT from God and you don’t earn a gift. Gifts are something someone gives to you and for the gift to be yours, you have to accept it. All we have to do is accept that wonderful gift. I know I have…won’t you? But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. Romans 5:15
For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Romans 10: 9-10

ITOBA Top Sprinter Delaunay Named Horse Of The Meeting NEW ORLEANS (Thursday, April 25, 2013) - Maggi Moss’s Delaunay, who swept all three of the major stakes for older sprinters, was named Horse of the Meeting for the 141st Thoroughbred Racing Season at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots. Delaunay’s perfect record for the meet included wins in the $100,000 Thanksgiving Handicap, the $75,000 F.W. Gaudin Memorial Stakes and the $150,000 Duncan F. Kenner Stakes. His final time of 1:08.32 in the Kenner was the fastest six furlongs run at Fair Grounds since 2002. Horse of the Meet and divisional honors were determined by a vote of media and racing officials. Trained by Tom Amoss, the 6-year-old gelding Delaunay has been working steadily in Louisville, Ky., for his probable next start in the $400,000 Churchill Downs (GII) at seven furlongs on Kentucky Derby Day, May 4. Delaunay is the first sprinter to win Horse of the Meeting at Fair Grounds since the filly Hallowed Dreams earned that honor at the 2000-2001 stand.

The Jockey Club, TOBA Unveil New Website Promoting Medication Reform The Jockey Club and the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (TOBA) today announced the launch of horseracingreform.org, an advocacy and information website designed to promote improved regulatory standards for horse racing. The site replaces cleanhorseracing.org. “Over the course of the last year we have seen tangible progress in the area of medication reform — as evidenced by the Mid-Atlantic states’ adoption of a uniform medication policy, the Association of Racing Commissioners International’s approval of a controlled therapeutic medication schedule, and increased movement toward RMTC accreditation of drug-testing labs,” said James L. Gagliano, president and chief operating officer of The Jockey Club. “As the horse racing industry moves toward improved and uniform regulations, horseracingreform. org will provide important benchmark information, such as state-bystate summaries of medication rules and safety requirements.” Cleanhorseracing.org, launched in May 2012, featured news, videos, scientific studies and commentary in support of medication-free racing. Horseracingreform.org expands on those features and includes additional information pertaining to: • • • • •

The state-by-state graphic summary of medication rules and penalties in all racing states provides users with an efficient means to review regulations. Also included is a timeline charting industrywide medication- and safety-reform initiatives that have been launched since 2006. “The industry has made great strides in reform over the past several years,” said Dan Metzger, president of TOBA. “TOBA is proud to continue its collaboration with The Jockey Club, and we are continuously striving to improve the economics, integrity and pleasure of the sport on behalf of owners and breeders with initiatives like the Horse Racing Reform website.” “We have added a great deal of new content and the new name covers a broader scope of activities and more accurately conveys what we are trying to accomplish,” said Gagliano. “We believe that the objective,

Country Star Martina McBride Will Sing National Anthem at Kentucky Derby 139 by John Asher | Churchill Downs Communications | 04/26/2013 Award-winning country music star Martina McBride, a four-time the Country Music Association (“CMA”) “Female Vocalist of the Year” who has sold more than 18 million albums worldwide, will add a new experience to her career resume on Saturday, May 4 when she performs the National Anthem prior to the 139th running of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (Grade I) at historic Churchill Downs Race-
track (“CDRT”) on Saturday, May 4. McBride will sing “The Star-Spangled Banner” before the Derby’s enormous on-track crowd and a national television audience watching the event on NBC Sports shortly after 5 p.m. (all times Eastern). The Kentucky Derby broadcast on NBC will begin at 4 p.m. and post time for the 2013 Kentucky Derby is scheduled for 6:24 p.m. She will perform the national anthem in the Kentucky Derby Winner’s Circle on the presentation stand, which is also known as the Cupola. McBride joins an impressive roster of entertainers that have performed the National Anthem on racing’s biggest day since 2009, when Churchill Downs launched the new Kentucky Derby Day tradition. Singer-songwriter-actress Mary J. Blige performed the anthem last year, following Jordan Sparks (2011), Rascal Flatts (2010) and LeAnn Rimes (2009). McBride’s impressive roster of recordings includes 11 studio albums and 41 singles. Five of McBride’s singles have reached #1 on the Billboard country music chart and 17 others charted in the top five. McBride is tied with Reba McEntire for the most CMA “Female Vocalist of the Year” honors. Her rendition of the National Anthem will be the second on the day at the historic track. The 113th Army Band from Fort Knox will play “The Star-Spangled Banner” earlier in the afternoon. Formed on July 8, 1840, the 113th Army Band is the second-oldest active duty Army Band after the United States Military Academy Band. Churchill Downs, the world’s most legendary racetrack, has conducted Thoroughbred racing and presented America’s greatest race, the Kentucky Derby, continuously since 1875. Located in Louisville, the flagship racetrack of Churchill Downs Incorporated (NASDAQ: CHDN) also operates Trackside at Churchill Downs, which offers year-round simulcast wagering at the historic track. Churchill Downs 2013 Spring Meet is scheduled for April 27-June 30. The track has hosted the Breeders’ Cup World Championships a record eight times. Information about Churchill Downs can be found on the Internet at www. ChurchillDowns.com.

Mystery of the Month
As you can see, we have had to resort to using flashback pictures of puppies now. (This means we need you to send us some pictures!!) In the meantime, we will have some fun with this mystery puppy. It shouldn’t be too hard to figure out who it is....but we also want you tell us when and where the picture was taken and the significance of the event? If you know the history on this little cutie, you may already know the answers... if not, you may be able to do some research to figure them out. If you know the answers to our Mystery Questions, then send us an email or give us a call to win your choice of a one year subscription to The Horse Resource, a “Horsey Hat” or a “Horsey-T.”
Call 765-744-7363
or email thehorseresource@msn.com with your answer! Good luck!
We Have A Winner!! We had several people guessing names of the horsemen in this picture. We even had someone identify the folks in the background. The people in the picture are as follow: L to R - Debby Pitcock (now Debby Garling), Norma (then Pitcock), James Otis Pitcock, “Hasty Glory,” Gene York (on horse) and Ralph Moister. *Also identified in the back with the glasses was RT Moore and standing beside the State Fair sign was Bob Brown. (Thank you Joy Goodman for this information!) Jim “Otis” Pitcock passed away in March, but left behind generations of children and grandchildren who are active in the horse industry. Watch for a feature tribute to this horseman. This month’s winner gave us the correct information at the Hoosier Horse Fair. Congratulations! Others who knew all or some of our Mystery folks were: Kelly Meeks, Mary Culy and Joy Goodman. Thank you for playing and remember to send in those old photos so we can keep playing!
We Need Your Pictures From the Past..... We have almost ran out of photos!.....Please send us your older photos of horsemen and women (and kids) that are still active in the horse business today. Or if you have pictures of a well known horse or event....that will mix things up a bit. We’re up for some new mysterys if you are!! Keep sending us those photos!! Send via email to thehorseresource@msn.com or mail to 12601 S CR 200 W Muncie, IN 47302
