LETTER FROM THE EDITOR A Letter from the Editor
I
hope you have all been getting to spend some enjoyable time with your horses, your horsey friends and/or on horseback doing something relaxing/ exciting/enjoyable. I know I have been trying to make it out to the barn earlier and earlier each day. I think I am addicted.
If you find the smell of horses relaxing and the taste of an occasional horse hair normal, you’re probably a lot like me. Let me share a poem with you that I wrote a while back.
--------- Don’t Judge Me (A Christian Cowgirl’s Plea) ---------
Follow Us
I see the way you stare, But don’t look at me and guess. You’re basing all you’re ideas Soley on the way I dress. You’ll hardly ever catch me in heels, I only own one pair. I don’t get to the tanning bed, And I color my own hair. My nails get painted once a month Whether they need it or not. Or on special occasions, like when I tied the knot. I drive my big red dually Everywhere I go It gets me to the grocery store And to the local horse show. If you catch me on the way To get a load of grain After I’ve been working in the barn Or riding in the rain…
Don’t pass judgment Or look down your nose at me Because my jeans are dirty And my T shirt was free. I got the T shirt with a purchase Of $100 or more Shopping on the internet At my favorite western store. The jeans I wear are stylish. At the rodeos quite “hot.” They don’t come cheap, you know, I love every pair I’ve got. My dually probably cost more Than your fancy luxury car. It has leather seats too And gets me just as far. And as for beauty treatments We give them all the time. Show Sheen and Cowboy Magic Are two favorites of mine.
Everyone wears the best shoes And are often getting new ones. The only tanning we do around here Is outside in the real sun. So what I guess I’m saying is………. “You live your life, I’ll live mine.” I choose to look this way, But I can clean up just fine. I talk often with my Father Though you’d be surprised just where When I exercise my barrel horse I talk to Him in prayer. On Sunday Mornings you will find us Just bring along a chair We call it “Cowboy Church” Everyone is welcome there. So next time you see me Remember what I’ve said to you It’s what’s inside that counts And Jesus Loves Cowgirls too!
Until next month.... smile at people, it confuses them......and don’t forget to count your blessings on horseback! God Bless and Ride Safe, Christa Conway
A Little “Barrel Talk” If you have visited “Barrel Talk” on BarrelHorseWorld.com, then you’ll have an idea of what to expect here. Kicking in Trailer EmtRoper My colt kicks in the trailer I have tried multiple things I have put a space between him and the other horses, I have fed him and I have not fed him. He only kicks when there are other horses in the trailer. He is kinda ornery to other horses. Any suggestions? I am thinking either kick chains but I honestly don’t think that they will phase him. Otherwise I was looking at hobbles but that makes me nervous for in the trailer for if he loses his balance. TwistedK Is it when the trailer is stopped or moving? I’d break check him hard a few times cow pie Put tire inner tubes to sandwich him in tight in his slot it will take his mind off kicking. SpaceCowboy I don’t know for sure if they are making him stop kicking complete-
Page 4
ly or just muffling the sound and/ or softening the blow, but softrides helped our gelding. FlyingJT RE: TwistedK - This, helps when you have horses fighting too. They catch on quick! Southtxponygirl I would try the kick chains on him EmtRoper He has the softrides all the way around. Its all the time moving or stopped. TwistedK I would just keep brake checking then. It throws them off balance and mine at least have learned I’ll do it when they least expect it. Could he be irritated with the soft ride boots? EmtRoper Well I always feel bad brake checking him because we have other head in the trailer and they are standing
just fine. Because when he is by himself he doesn’t kick at all. We have hauled him with and without the softrides and he kicks no matter what. Vickie Put breeding hobbles on him after you load him up. Only thing I found that worked on my nieces horse. svincent RE: Vickie This. acee06 I have a horse who kicks like crazy in the trailer- kick chain works like a charm! TessBelle Mine has destroyed the inside rubber on my trailer in her stall from kicking and pawing. I didn’t know about chains until about a year ago. She’s gets pawing chains and kick chains. No more problems.
Southtxponygirl And the kick chains are so simple to make. TessBelle Yeah they are and cheap. We use leather dog collars and put a piece of chain on them. Simple. Southtxponygirl Thats what we used when needed ThreeCorners Have you tried changing where in the trailer he rides? We have one that is a real bugger unless he’s in the last back slot.

Sport of Kings to Kings of Sport Thirty plus years ago, 40% of the horses registered with the United States Equestrian Federation were Off-Track Thoroughbreds. In 2010 that number was just over 10%. It has been said that other areas such as recreational riding and other horseback activities has seen a similar decline. Several people and organizations are working to turn those numbers around. On Jan 15, 2015, the Retired Racehorse Project announced the Thoroughbred Makeover and National Symposium to be held at the Kentucky Horse Park Oct 23-25, 2015. Along with seminars, demonstrations, and a party on Friday Oct 23, a contest held Saturday and Sunday Oct 24-25, 2015 was launched for the title of Americas Most Wanted Thoroughbred with over $100,000 in cash and prizes. A schedule of all events throughout the weekend is forthcoming. A sponsor fair and a marketplace of horses rounds out the weekend. Ten disciplines will compete in their events on Saturday with the winner from each discipline competing against each other for the title on Sunday. Sunday’s performances, a ticketed event, will also include demos from OTTB who have excelled in their second careers. To be eligible for the competition horses must have raced or been in race training after Jan 1, 2013, with no more than 15 rides prior to Jan 15, 2015. These horses will train for a maximum of 9 months for one or more of the following disciplines: Barrel Racing, Competitive Trail, Dressage, Fox Hunting, Polo, Working Ranch Horse, Show Hunter, Show Jumper, Eventing, and Other or Free Style. This contest connects breeders, owners, and trainers of racehorses with organizations and individuals who train these horses for a second career, and creates an awareness of the Thoroughbreds versatility when their racing career is over. An increase in the market for ex-racehorses provides motivation to move them on to a second career while they are still sound. Entries opened on Jan 15, 2015 and were said to be open till June 1, 2015 or until the committee believed that the capacity was maxed. On March 2, 2015 it was announced that entries had reached 330 and they were closed. New applications would be placed on a wait list. Consideration for entry will be given to the following categories: trainers with large public followings who have proven themselves as top competitors in their disciplines, farms or institutions with large public followings, horses who ran in Breeders’ Cup races, and polo entries. Requests for the above mentioned spots should be emailed to Kirsten at Kirsten@ retiredracehorseproject.org As of March 31 there are 338 entries with plans for up to 350.
Page 10
Each of the competitors has a blog site to share their journey as they prepare for the competition. These blogs can be viewed at www.retiredracehorseproject.org/blog. Many competitors have Facebook and Twitter accounts as well. About the RRP The Retired Racehorse Training Project was formed in 2010 by Stuart Pittman and friends. In 2014 the name was changed to Retired Race Horse Project or the RRP. Their mission statement reads as follows: “The Retired Racehorse Project is an effort to increase demand for retired Thoroughbred race horses as pleasure and sport horses through public events, clinics, training publications, videos and internet tools. Our mission is to facilitate the placement of retired Thoroughbred racehorses in second careers by educating the public about the history, distinctive characteristics, versatility of use, and appropriate care and training of the iconic American Thoroughbred.” Through proven practices(Thoroughbred horse shows and classes, training books, articles, and videos, clinics and symposia, horse expos, on-track demos, web sites, Facebook, e-mail marketing) and new ideas(apprenticeship programs, trainer challenge, trainer directory, Wikipedia of OTTB’s, and college-based training programs) the RRP is working to expand the market for ex-racehorses. On March 24th all competitors were emailed a survey. Show officials will be making some decisions how to best accommodate the 338 plus competitors. The original guidelines and event plans were intended for 100 entries or less. It has been said, “New level, new devil”. Along with considering the competitors thoughts as they make important decisions along the way, show officials have stated that each rider and horse will be able to show at the level they are at in their training. As an example, a horse will not be ask to jump 4 ft. if than their current training level is 2 ft. Riders are allowed to add and change events as they progress in their training. Entries are allowed to switch horses if needed. Another option allows for the horse and entry to be sold, transferring the entry to a new person. Hats off to the crew that is putting this event together, they repeatedly demonstrate that the interest of the horses and competitors is top priority. This is a venue for OTTB’s to shine! BARREL RACING
National Newsletter
Spring is here!!!! Finally we are able to have some barrel races that we can get to without first having to shovel snow. With the weather we have had these last two winters, about the only thing we can do is set back and laugh a little bit. You know we announced a while back that we were going to be moving the Murfreesboro Preferred Show back into March from January so that we could try to get some better weather for the show. Well two months delay on the show and the weather still got us! We trudged on through rain, cold and even a bit of snow Thursday and Friday and the sun decided to give us a little warmth by the time Sunday came around. Inside the arena was a different story. With $30,000 to win the barrel racing action was blazing. We had a total of 860 entries for the week and paid out the $30,000 in 181 checks. Our 2013 National Finals 1D champ decided to show off a little to close out the weekend. Ashley Brooks and Jane won Sundays Open with the fastest time of the weekend a 15.600. You can see a full set of the results in the following pages, check out the times and $$$$.
COFFEY DOMINATES THE MATCH RACE IN LIBERTY, KY
The MATCH was a blast. I just can’t tell you how much fun it is to watch folks cheer for each other the way they do with the Match Race. Suddenly the 4D rider gets just as much attention as the 1D rider. You see high fives flying with a clean run and some heartbreak with a barrel down. While we have a great membership and we are fortunate enough to see a lot of support from one barrel race to the next, there is a heightened since of camaraderie at the Match Race. Now it could be they are in pursuit of bragging rights or the fact that they can win 100% of the pot money plus an additional $2000 in added money. With a $20 entry fee and potential paycheck of $532 I’m gonna say it was a bit of both. When the dust settled Sunday only one team could claim the victory and it was “Coo Coo for Cloverleafs.” The team was comprised of 5 members Grant Patterson, Chris Coffey, Kalab Ferrell, Andy Winninger and Shannon Roberts. They did have a bit of experience as two of the members were returning team champions from last year. Grant Patterson and Chris Coffey were on last years winning team “Mars and Venus.” In addition to being on the winning Match Race team Coffey dominated the barrel racing winning every class that he entered all three days for a combined earnings of $4239.25! Check out the following results to see who else racked up.
We would like to send out a special thanks to the Needhams and Roger Strange for providing Church Service for us in Murfreesboro. We had a great crowd in attendance and the message that Roger and the Needhams brought to the table clearly touched many in attendance. Epp Mevin Walls sang and delivered a service in Liberty that had nearly half our crowd in tears. It is amazing how sometimes you can be touch in such a special way at a horse show cowboy church service. I asked Epp a few shows back if he could provide the message for us in addition to singing Christian music and he took that as a calling from God. I was just amazed by how God is using him to keep us in touch on these long weekends. Thank you to everyone who was in attendance at these two shows. If you were unable to make it we hope to see you at the next one. In this issue of the Horse Resource we are releasing the flier for our first ever Pennsylvania Preferred Show. God bless and have fun! Shane

Patent Urachus
A possible cause is partial twisting of the umbilical cord in the womb, or a greater than average length of umbilicus, which may lead to dilation of the urachal tube and subsequent failure to close at birth. A patent urachus can also be acquired within the first few weeks of life, even after the urachus originally appeared to have sealed at birth. This type of patent urachus is most commonly associated with a navel infection. Early signs of infection may include an enlarged navel that is painful to the touch and discharge of pus from the navel opening. Navel infections can easily spread through the bloodstream causing symptoms such as fever, depression, inappetance, or signs of systemic illness such as swollen joints and lameness. Patent urachus can also be caused by the foal straining as in the case of constipation or by lifting the foal under the abdomen. Debilitated and systemically ill foals are most at risk for developing a patent urachus. It is important to call your equine veterinarian if urine is observed leaking from the navel, you can see/feel moisture on or around the fur surrounding the navel or there is enlargement of the naval. Your veterinarian will recommend a thorough examination of the foal to check for signs of systemic infection. They may perform an ultrasound examination of the foal’s navel. The ultrasound examination will help confirm communication between the bladder and the urachus, and help determine the presence and extent of infection and the structures involved. Blood work may be performed to help rule out infection, but if infection is present, bacterial cultures of the navel may be performed to determine which bacteria is causing the infection to help decide on the appropriate antibiotic choice for the foal. Navel infections can become life threatening if immediate action is not taken and the infection is allowed to spread through the bloodstream. Treatment decisions made will depend on whether or not your foal has a persistent or patent urachus and whether infection is or is not present. To help prevent the development of a patent urachus and navel infection, it is important to: • • • • •
Page 24
Closely monitor your foal’s navel in the first few weeks of life for any signs of moisture, enlargement or urine leakage. Dip your foal’s navel with 25% chlorhexidine solution at the time of birth and several times over the next 24 hours. It is important for your foal to receive adequate colostrum to ensure that it has the required immunity to help fight infection. A simple blood test can be performed on your foal by your veterinarian at 24 hours of age to ensure that it has adequate immunity. If it does not, plasma can be administered to the foal to help prevent the development of infection in the navel or any other part of the foal.

he urachus is the tube within the umbilical cord through which urine from the unborn foal travels from its bladder to the allantois which is a fluid filled sac surrounding the unborn foal. Normally, the urachus closes at the time of birth and the navel dries and shrivels up within hours of birth. When the urachus does not close or closes and re-opens at a later date, urine continues to leak from the umbilicus. The amount of leaking urine varies considerably, ranging an occasional drip and a moist navel, to full streams of urine.
Mild complications of a patent urachus include, urine scalding of the abdominal skin surrounding the navel and local abscess formation. A more serious complication of a patent urachus stems from the fact that a patent urachus provides an environment favorable for bacterial infection. This infection can spread through the bloodstream and can lead to life threatening complications such as joint infection, pneumonia and generalized septicemia. Advanced infection of the urachus or navel and involvement of other body systems greatly decreases the chance of survival. Other less common complications include bladder infection, bladder wall necrosis and abdominal adhesions. Most cases of patent urachus respond to antibiotics and cauterization of the urachus. If this doesn not work then surgical removal is required. After surgical removal, the foal will need to remain in the hospital for several days for antibiotic treatment and observation. The abdominal incision needs to be monitored daily to ensure no signs of infection are developing. Once the foal returns to the farm, they will need to remain in a clean stall with restricted activity for several weeks. The prognosis is good in cases of acquired patent urachus with associated navel infection when there is early diagnosis and prompt medical and surgical treatment. Advanced infection and spread of infection through the bloodstream greatly reduce the chance of survival and the prognosis is guarded. Newborn foals are fragile beings and must be monitored at least twice a day to make sure they stay healthy and live to be the champions they were bred to be.

This month we’re featuring a special story, written by Grace Hollars and featuring Cristian Esqueda. Cristian is an up and coming jockey who is realizing his dream with the help and guidance of Roy and Penny Moore of Michigan. Read about Cristian’s early years in America, his stuggle to find his place and how he is now climbing the ladder of success in the racing world.
A Dreamer
by Grace Hollars
Looking for Home
As ten-year-old Cristian Esqueda stepped onto United States soil, he heard a language he did not understand and was surrounded by people he didn’t know. He soon came to realize he was far from his Mexican home.
life better. He also recalls the difficulties picking up the English language. “I could write it better than I could speak it,” he said. “So many words have the same meaning and sound the same such as wood and would or wear and where. They sound the same, but they meant different things and that really confused me.” During Esqueda’s early years of being in America, it was not uncommon to leave behind the friends he made in one area. One that sticks out in his memory was his 12-year-old best friend Jamie (pronounced “Himey”.) Esqueda considered them brothers who played soccer every day. Once it was time to move again, he packed his bags and traveled to his next new home in Indiana, leaving his dear friend behind, knowing he likely will never see him again. Soon after moving to Indiana, Cristian’s father got into trouble and was sent back to Mexico, leaving his family with a new child and never returning. This is where Cristian and his brother Caeser Esqueda were sent to work at multiple places. Caeser went to a dairy farm while Cristian went to a farm where he dug ditches to drain water off the fields. As the months continued to pass, Caeser chose to not go back to school while Cristian returned to school, joined the soccer and wrestling teams, then finished out the school year.
Finding the Passion
Finally, summer came and Cristian went back to work for his family, but this time he started working on a horse farm where he learned how to exercise and run race horses. “I did well in sports at school, but working and riding race horses after school was to become my passion,” he said. “My brother would pick me up after school and go to the horse farm every night to work horses together. Then one day my brother didn’t show up to the horse farm. He was gone.” “Many days and months went by like a blur,” Esqueda wrote in an English paper for one of his classes. “Some of my memories were of moving from place to place and knowing not only my family and I were different, but the kind of food we ate, our clothes, our holidays, our names, everything about us was different.”
On Caeser’s way to get Cristian, he was stopped by the police, ended up getting arrested for driving with no license, and was deported to Mexico. Cristian had to leave school and the horse farm to work on the drainage ditches once again. A few months later, Cristian’s mother got a job and he was able to go back to school and work horses after school once again.
His first memories of his journey to the United States began in Ohio where he and his family of three brothers, two sisters, and his parents continued to move to different Spanish Community trailer parks. After two years of jumping around the map of the Great Lakes region, they settled down in one of the communities and finally started to get comfortable. Cristian said at the age of 12 is where his memories became clearer and he started to understand his new
While Cristian continued to work on the horse farm, his mother was working with a lawyer to bring home his brother from Mexico.
Page 28
“This was taking a lot of time and money that my mom didn’t have, but she would not stop,” Cristian recalled.
LIVING WITH HORSES - Directly from our Readers They expressed how important it is in America to go back to school and finish it. “He would be working on homework while riding in the truck on the way to the track,” said Penny. Cristian worked hard at it and he finished school.
Building a New Life
“Cristian would call us all the time because he has an absent father in his life. How he lived was really tough, and being not legal was also tough. They really have to hide out,” said Penny. One phone call that Penny will never forget is when Cristian called them from jail. A few weeks earlier, Cristian told Roy that a kid at his school was bullying him. Roy, being old-fashioned, told Cristian to “pop him in the face,” and Cristian took Roy’s advice and was put in jail for a weekend.
The Start of Something Really Good
Since Cristian worked race horses, he would occasionally go to the track with his trainer to watch other jockeys work horses, but he could not breeze the horses himself since he did not have a jockey license. Luckily, he met Jose Beltran, who soon introduced him to Roy and Penny Moore. Roy and Penny own and race Quarter Horses and are strongly connected in the horse world. The Moores are known for helping immigrants come to America to train and become jockeys. One jockey who went through the Moores’ home was Oscar Del Gato, a well known Quarter Horse jockey around the country who is now also getting into the Thoroughbred business. “The first thing I saw was kind of scary. It was Roy, and he had tobacco in his mouth and he looked kind of scary,” Cristian said. “Then I talked to Penny and she was really nice, and then I talked to Roy and he was the nicest guy ever.” Cristian finally got the opportunity to work for the Moores as a substitute for Jose, who traveled to Mexico to visit his family. Before leaving his family to start working for the Moores, Cristian’s mother was still battling to bring home his brother, Caeser. After many months of hard work and lawyers, Caeser was finally home and with a relieved mother, Cristian felt comfortable enough to leave his family to make his way to Michigan to the Moores. On his way to Michigan, Cristian was stopped by a police officer and was ticketed for driving without a license. At the time, Cristian was not a legal citizen of the United States and since his parents brought him over here from Mexico, he does not have a Social Security number. Therefore, he is unable to get a driver’s license. “My parents brought me here to the U.S. with no papers from Mexico, so I am what people call an ‘alien’. I hate that word. It makes me feel like some kind of monster. All I am is a kid whose parents wanted a better life for,” said Cristian. Cristian was thankful for not getting sent back to Mexico, but he did pay the price for breaking the law. He did his 48 hours in jail and paid the fines for driving without a license. After a week of delays, he was finally on his way to work for the Moores. When he arrived, he was surprised by the way Penny and Roy had their own system of working horses and had rules for jockeys. The rules included things such as drinking, drugs, lying, stealing and no speaking Spanish. Of course, the eager Cristian abided by them.
Penny chuckles as she reminisces on the comical moment. “I’ll never forget that phone call. We answered the phone, and he said, “Guess where I’m at!? In jail!”” Esqueda was inspired by the Moores’ history with other jockeys and dreamed of winning awards along with being a leading jockey in certain parks. But first, he started out with Penny ponying the horse he was working. (Ponying is when a calm horse leads the race horse.) “Things were going great! I learned so much until Penny and Roy decided to let me go on my own without a lead pony. Penny had a thoroughbred. She told me he was very strong and not to let him get going too fast because he would take off running,” describes Cristian. “Well of course that is exactly what happens, because what do you think they forget to teach me? How to stop a runaway horse! Around the track I went faster. I wasn’t scared, it was kind of fun.” Penny, Roy, and Jose were at the end of the track, and by waving their arms to distract the horse, they helped slow down the thoroughbred. After a few weeks, it was time for Jose to take his trip to Mexico to see his family. Cristian stepped up to fill his spot. Soon he ventured to the track to the Stewarts, who are the leaders of the track that approves riders to make sure they are safe to ride on the track and also make decisions regarding the track. They watched him ride occasionally until he was finally approved to ride and was able to ride for other trainers if they request him to ride their horse. Since he was a new jockey, Cristian struggled to find trainers to ride for in the beginning. He felt as if he had an advantage on other horses because of his weight, which was seven pounds under the standard weight for a jockey. With the help of Roy he finally got a trainer who agreed to give Cristian eight races. Roy helped his jockey learn the special rules for the jockey’s room, for the paddock area, and for the stage where the horses are paraded in front of the grandstands to the bettors and the winner’s circle. Race day came and Cristian followed Roy’s instructions before the race, but what really shocked him, was the race itself. After he loaded in the first gate and the starting buzzer sounded, Cristian lost the grip on his reins. By the time he grabbed his reins to regain control, he realized he was fifth. As he continued in the furlong race his legs began to burn with pain, but he fought through and began to chase the lead horses.
“We taught him how to ride here and the way we do things,” said Penny.

“I was going for second coming out of the turn, and I thought, ‘I can live with second!’ But by the stretch I passed the lead horse and I won! Just like my dream!” said Cristian. When the leaves began to change, it was time for Cristian to hang up his silks and return to school. Even though he dreaded the thought of it, he continued his education. He finished another year of school and went back to Michigan to ride for the Moores. Cristian smiles upon the memory of a happy Quarter Horse he enjoyed riding, Bucket List. He won his second race in a row on Bucket List. He said it was two races he’ll always remember. While pursuing his legal citizanship, Cristian continued riding all summer in Michigan, Indiana and the Match races, Cristian and his brother, with the help and encouragement of the Moores, received their visas as part of the Dream Act. With excitement in his voice, he exclaimed, “I am now what they call A-Dreamer!” Cristian started out with small dreams and made them happen. Today he listed in the top 40 jockeys in the nation and has earned almost $271,000 dollars in last year’s season. This year his goals are to earn over $300,000 dollars. Cristian is also considering welding school for a future career and is happily engaged. One can say he is living the American dream, but in Penny Moore’s words, “The American Dream is to be American.”
We would like to encourage you to share your own experiences with us so we can pass them along to our other horse loving readers. Send submissions to: thehorseresource@msn.com. Include written permission to publish your submission. We look forward to hearing from you!

The Circle of Life Living on a farm has many advantages. Of course there is always something entertaining going on that gives me plenty to share with you all. Then there is the opportunity (if you will) to witness the “Circle of Life.”
there was no trauma...no coyotes or other critter brought his demise. He just looked like he want to sleep and didn’t wake up. We’ll miss your antics and your dancing. I’ll miss watching you and the lady go around and around.
My family has always allowed their kids to experience the good, the bad and the ugly. This means they have witnessed the miracle of birth by watching baby animals come into the world and the beauty of nature from seeds to harvest. This also means they have witnessed injuries that are and aren’t treatable, the aftermath of the untreatable ones and the untimely death of a precious pet. They have raised chickens for their meat and gathered eggs from the hens to provide their breakfast. It really is quite a privilege (and dying connection to many natural things) to live on any kind of farm. This week I was reminded of the sadder side to this privilege. We had to say an untimely goodbye to our friend, Chuck, the chicken who thought he was a dog. The people aren’t really sure what happened,
Until we meet again one day. RIP, Chuck. On a little lighter note, speaking of the “Circle of Life,” we have some new baby horses here at the farm. They are really cute and I love their little whiskers. They tickle when they try to get a smell of me through the fence.
Now, I know I have done my share of poking fun at the guy, but he really was a part of our family here on the farm. The lady took it the hardest and he picked on her the most. I think they had a love/hate relationship. She was in tears when she found him. (She had went to take him some fruit scraps.)
Flashback with Bella
So, that’s how it goes...time and life goes on. Times like these are good reminders to appreciate our life and our time with each other that much more.

Appreciating my circle,
The Horse Show From H#$*! Part 1 They were clapping their hands behind her and making a show of it. I know she can hear... again, I think it is the breed thing. When it was time to go, I had to wait in the truck while my owners had a “who can find Annie party.” Even if I was invited, I didn’t attend...I wish they would’ve left her at home.
Excerpt from Barks N Bits, 2010
It seems my little column for tips revolving around horses has turned into a column about my day to day adventures of living on a barrel horse farm with my owners, their kids and the rest of the crew. Needless to say, this month I decided to continue with what I’ll call “The Adventures of Bella and Annie.” Since last month, I have came around a little and will allow Annie in my presence if I’m in the mood. (This does not include when I am eating or sleeping, but she still has to test those waters...I think she is a slow learner. Must be the breed.) Somehow Annie has managed to “earn” a position in the truck when we attend the horse shows. All the other dogs stay at home (except me of course), so I am not sure what she did to earn this job. It is not by seniority or skill. It is probably because my owners are afraid to leave her alone in the house. (For such a little dog, she can make a big mess, use your imagination.) I am always ready to get in the truck for a trip to a horse show and my owners do not have to hunt me down when it is time to go. I am anxiously waiting by the truck door to jump right in.....but not “cute little Annie.” I think my owners were wondering if she had hearing issues this month.
She was hiding under her favorite bush... “Isn’t that cute?” They put her in the truck and we finally got to head to the show. On the road in the truck is the only peace and quiet that came for me that particular day. I’ll fill you in more next month. Let’s just say that I’m really beginning to question my owner’s sanity.

September 27, 2014 Henderson’s arena Jackson Ohio, It was the first time that I won the 1D in the youth class. I was on Mem and there were a lot of people who thought we would never do any good together it took some time but I proved them wrong. Hobbies other than horses? I also show pigs throughout the year and I am a wrestling stat. Where do you see yourself in 10 years? On the road competing competitively. Accomplishment with horses? I won a saddle in 2013 (which I never thought I could do so I had no clue I was winning it until I got to the banquet and they announced that I had won) for the youth 3D with Lucy and Tagen my goal was to just get better. Clint is a graduate of East Central High School. His parents are Terrie VanVolkenburgh and respectively Joe Trentman. He has grown up in the horse world, both parents have rode almost all their life...Clint's grandfather as some of you may remember was the late Terry VanVolkenburgh, who would run up and down the fences when his daughters would run barrels. Clint began barrel racing at the age of 4 with a pony, then went on to particpate in Jr. Rodeo and his favorite event was the sheep riding, hard to believe he is now a barrel racer. He has won the Ohio Youth NBHA and Indiana Youth and Open NBHA , he has also won the Congress youth barrel four times, and was runner up in the Congress Sweepstakes. He placed at Josey Jr. world numerous times, and won the NBHA Youth World 1D in 2006. He loves to barrel race and is now trying his hand at the futurities. In Clint's spare time he mows grass for a part time job and is also very active in his church where he and his cousins are bible school helpers. Clint also volunteers one day a week at a school in Cincinatti where he spends time tutoring other kids in reading.

It’s Rodeo Time!
E
veryone is excited as the trucks and trailers have finally been moving up and down the rodeo trail with the March kick off of the Quad States rodeo in Liberty, KY for the Cinch Junior High Division and the April IJRA/Cinch rodeo at the Hoosier Horse Fair. Our cowboys and cowgirls hopefully had a good dose of rodeo to control the rodeo fever everyone has after a long, cold winter. The sun is warming the ground, the arenas are being worked, and our horses are getting slick and shiny. We are ready to rodeo! Check out our schedule and come out and cheer on all of our amazing kids!
The Quad State Rodeo held in Liberty, KY on March 21-22nd brought Junior High Division cowboys and cowgirls from Kentucky, Indiana, and Tennessee together to compete for the weekend. What a great rodeo! Kentucky did a great job with their rodeo/fundraiser. The rodeo ran smoothly, their give-aways had all of the contestants making a dash for the announcers stand, and the Pot Luck dinner on Saturday night gave everyone a chance to slow down and get to know each other. Quad States gives Cinch Division contestants the opportunity to win points in their events in hopes to qualify in one of the top four positions in their state and earn a spot to compete at the Junior High Division National Finals in Des Moines, Iowa at the end of June. Quad State also has some payouts for each event which out cowgirls and cowboys always love. Quite a few checks made a truck ride home back to Indiana. While the kids all rodeo independently for points in their events, Quad States also tracks overall team points which always adds a little fun and excitement to the competition. The state that wins the most points over the weekend gets to take the Quad States flag home with them. This year Tennessee took home the first place honors. Team Indiana came in second place after all of the dust has settled. Second place is awarded money which is then donated to a cause or organization that is chosen by the cow-

boys and cowgirls. This year Team Indiana suggested many great organizations and finally decided to donate their money to the Stigall Family. While rodeo parents love to watch their kids compete in the rodeo arena, the moments that happen because of their involvement in rodeo that show compassion, kindness, and caring mean even more and make it all the hours and money worth it.
IJRA held their first rodeo after the winter break on April 12th at the Hoosier Horse Fair. What a great experience for the kids. For being late in the day on the last day of the Horse Fair we started out with a pretty great crowd. Some of the kids said they felt like they were coming down the alley at the NFR. Thank you to all of the Keith and Tami White, the IJRA Board Members, and the families who helped put this rodeo together. On Saturday night, some of the IJRA kids got to help with the World’s Toughest Grand Entry and carry a big American flag and be part of the presentation. What a great way to jump back in to the rodeo season. We hope you were able to see our kids compete at the Hoosier Horse Fair, if you missed them come on out to one of our remaining rodeos this season.

God Is Awesome
It Had Been A Beautiful Ride
What a glorious day! Even as she would recall it, she could still see the radiance of a late fall sun cascading over the slow moving waters of a winding stream meandering through a landscape of the coming harvest. Leaves of golds and reds spun slowly and fell in the breeze. They landed, with barely a ripple, as reminders of all their blessings. The two of them drifted slowly away from where they had begun and toward the sunset which spread out over the horizon. Fifty years had provided the ability to speak without talking. In silence, he said days, like this, were the reward of years of labor. She reminded him all the work, faith and love had provided this time to enjoy.
Not yet!
Both of them knew life was still not always simple, but any complexity or difficulty came at a pace which made it all seem navigable. It was all they could ask it to be, individually and together. Neither of them ever saw the change in the journey. It came from nowhere. Changing course was never an option. As the hull crashed into the invisible, she knew he was gone. An undercurrent, lying just below the surface, ripped him away from her in an instant. Time stopped in the moments before she was dropped into the waters. She clung to the moments they had shared. She loved and cherished each. Life, like this river they had been travelling, had turned from tranquility to rage.
She reached out and grabbed hold of a rock. Somehow, for a moment, she hung on. She lifted her face above the surface and proclaimed, “God is awesome!” Her whisper could barely be heard above the roar of a river which would take her tomorrow or next week or next month. Her spirit turned her words into a roar which quieted everything with their power. For that moment, all she was, all her character, all her faith, all her love, all HER God, stopped everything around her and held time and death at bay.
“God, give me the strength to be like her. In the absurdity of it all, she found peace in knowing you, trusting you, loving you.”
And, as she slid down into the waters, all she knew was gone!
Three years of sliding into the raging waters of Alzheimer’s; being swept away; plummeting deeper into the power which will finally carry her away from us; that’s what we’ve known.
She tumbled head over heels into the depths. It churned her from side to side and battered her against invisible walls of darkness. She came to the surface a few times, but the power which had consumed her was too great. It pulled her down and swept her away. She plummeted over one waterfall and down into a deep pool at its base. This might be it. She was going to drown, right here. The rage was not done with her. It pulled her faster along and she fell over the edge of another cliff she never saw coming. There was another and another and …. Each fall made the waters wider, faster, deeper and more unescapable.
Happy Mother’s Day, Mom. I love you.

Not My Will, But Yours Be Done Do you remember the Garth Brooks song Unanswered Prayers? It is a good old country song that talks about wanting something and praying really hard for that something. It focuses on those unanswered prayers as the singer realizes down the road that things went much better than they would have if the prayer had been answered. Sometimes what we think we need and what God’s sovereign will calls for are two different things. I honestly had not thought much about praying and not having my prayers answered as much more than my own lack of faith. But when I started thinking a little harder on why some prayers go unanswered I realized that it all comes back to God’s will and what will bring Him glory and complete His plan for us as individuals and a whole. So how do we know if we are praying for what God wants? He actually tells us how to pray through the Lord’s prayer. Matthew 6:9-13 9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. 10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. If you break that prayer down and then elaborate each part, it makes it easy to pray as God would have us. Let’s break it down... • •

Start out by recognizing God as who he is, our Heavenly Father. Then give Him thanks, honor and praise. Acknowledge that He knows best and you want to accept His will in your life and for the future of His kingdom. Place your requests before Him. (I like this because in the prayer Jesus asks for only today’s needs - not tomorrow or next year - but “daily bread.”) Ask for forgiveness for things you’ve done wrong - and acknowledge that you soften your heart and forgive those who have wronged you (or “owe” you.) Ask for guidance and protection. Close with another acknowledgement of His sovereign power and will.
This helped me tremendously when I broke it down into sections. I hope it helps you too. There is one other thing I want to mention. This thought helped me understand why some of my prayers (that I thought were legitimate requests) were not answered. Even Jesus had prayers that were not answered. Luke 22:41-42 41And he was withdrawn from them about a stone’s cast, and kneeled down, and prayed, 42Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done. Jesus asked God to “remove this cup from me.” He was referring to what he knew was coming - the betrayal, the beating, pain, suffering of the crucifixion and death. He knew it had to be done as part of God’s redemption plan, but he still asked. He also immediately added “not my will, but thine, be done.” Jesus did ask in prayer, but he also knew that God had a plan. He ended the prayer by accepting and submitting to God’s will.
Sometimes we have to endure things we don’t want to endure for God’s plan (and we may never understand why.) Jesus transferred the burden he was facing to God and was able to continue with a stoic and serene resolve until he took his last breath on the cross. We can do the same. We can give our burdens and fears to God in order to make it through a tough situation. God knows what is best when we can’t see past our emotions, our pain and our fear. He knows what is needed for the big picture to come together. He knows what we need now and He knows what we need ten years from now. What we are going through today is making us stronger and more prepared for what is ahead and it is all part of HIS plan. Some people say, “all things happen for a reason.” I agree, the reason is God’s will. Happy Trails & God Bless! Love in Christ, Christa

HOT IRON As the sun was sittin` The coyotes began to howl Cattle a bit jumpy Something was on the prowl
Those coyotes out there Well..... they don’t have a prayer Boys take a look at that brand There on my mare
See we’ll use them hot irons To light up our way Then scorch their hide And they’ll run away
Thomas poked at the fire Then let out a sigh Looked toward the heavens Not a star in the sky
Yep the J Bar C Is who we ride for Those coyotes have no idea What I have in store
Here on the J Bar C We will always have light And them ol` coyotes Can’t stand the sight
Turned to the boys Said we’re in for a fight This fire is dim Not much good for light
Boys grab them irons Put`em in the flames Get`em red hot And wake up my brother James
So boys grab an iron That’s hot as the sun Time to show them ol` coyotes We never turn and run
John jumped to his feet Grabbed his old saddle Yelled out to Thomas Them are our cattle
When them irons are ready We’ll be up for the fight Yep boys them coyotes They’re getting branded tonight
John 12:46 I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.

One Last (& most important) thought… Salvation is a gift and a choice......
But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. Romans 5:15 For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Romans 10: 9-10

Jesus died on the cross as the final sacrifice for our sins. He was resurrected on the 3rd day and he defeated death and Satan for us. All we have to do is believe that He beat death, acknowledge it with our words and accept Him as our personal savior. That’s when the rebirth happens and we are changed! He then promises us eternal life with Him in Heaven! You can’t earn your way into Heaven; you have to accept His gift of salvation. So many people think they “aren’t good enough” to get to Heaven… But… Salvation is a GIFT from God and you don’t earn a gift. Gifts are given to you and for the gift to be yours, you have to accept it. All we have to do is accept this wonderful gift. I know I have…won’t you?
