LETTER FROM THE EDITOR A Letter from the Editor
W
e’re in full swing around here! Finally getting to ride horses on a regular basis (in between the rain showers anyway.) Horse shows are becoming plentiful and it makes the decision hard to make when it comes time to pick a place to compete and hang out with friends.
Check out our Calendar of Events in this issue or on our website (with links to show fliers) at www. thehorseresource.com for lots of horse show options! This month’s issue includes results from the IBRA Easter Preferred Show in Murfreesboro, Tennessee and the IBRA Match Race in Liberty, Kentucky. Take a picture with your picture and share it to our Facebook page or email it to us for a future issue! We love hearing from our readers!
Until next month.... Soak up some sunshine at a horse show and enjoy your weekends hanging out with horsey friends....and don’t forget to count your blessings on horseback! God Bless and Ride Safe, Christa Conway
A Little “Barrel Talk”

How Often Do You Ride Through The Week? EmtRoper Besides being in a perfect world and being able to ride every day, how many days a week do you ride your horse that you run on ? cecollins0811 I try to ride 3-5 days during the week, trail riding on at least one of those days. GLP When I was going hard, I rode 4 days a week. I gave my horse Monday off if we didn’t run Sunday. Friday and Saturday were rodeo runs. The first ride after a weekend was an easy hour long ride with a lot of walking, not ambling. Wednesday was the hardest day, working on skills and maybe a walk or lope through the pattern. All my rides were at least an hour, but I let the horse tell me how hard we rode. They all included some trotting, loping and a lot of swinging walks. Rarely did I
ride in an arena. oija When I have done my best I am riding a minimum of 4-5 days a week. rodeowithjoker I typically compete on Saturdays and/ or Sundays, so my horses almost always get Monday off. Tuesday-Friday, I try to ride or exercise each horse at least twice. MS2011 I generally ride 5-6 days a week. Somedays we might just rope the sled and cruise around...other days I’ll ride harder. But mine gets some form of exercise pretty much 6 days a week. Turned out during the day and stalled at night. horsiace1025 For me it depends on the horse mostly. I dont currently really have any all
out finished horses. When I did in the past, I would excercise them 2-3 days during the week. Sometimes, it was just leading them with another horse and then run them on the weekends. For my horses that are 3/4 finished and just need slight tune ups, they get rode the same 2-3 but Im always riding them and work the barrels usually once a week, usually at a walk or trot unless they really need some work, then they get ran on most weekends. My colts get rode 4-5 days a week at least. Cowgirl Chic I usually ride 5-6 times a week for at least an hour each night :) mruggles Everyday....i may give them the day after a race off...m hoofs_in_motion
Anywhere from 2 days, to 5 days a week. mtcanchazer With me it just really depends. Lately I’ve been so busy I’m lucky if I get to ride once a week, but normally I try to ride around 3-4 times a week (including a race) in the summer. scwebster I try my hardest to ride at least 3 days during the week if entered on the weekends. I am focusing more now on physical conditioning a not as much on the pattern. I plan to lope around the pattern a time or two on my last workout of the week.

QUARTER HORSE RACING
Olivo makes the switch to Quarter Horse training at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino
finishing third behind Carters Success with Rock This Candy Tree ridden by Cristian Esqueda. “The student beat the teacher,” said Olivo with a smile. Olivo currently has 18 horses in training at his farm outside of Wilkinson, which is just north of Greenfield, Ind. Of the 18 in training, he owns five of them himself. Carters Success is one that Olivo owns, making his first win even that much more significant. Fernando Fonseca-Soto, a new jockey at Indiana Grand this season, was aboard for the win. “Fernando started riding at Arapahoe in Colorado and then went to Iowa last year and was at Hialeah this winter,” said Olivo. “He asked if I needed a jockey so he came to Indiana this year, and he’s been riding for me.” One thing that is more important to Olivo than racing is his family. The devoted family man had some of his kids in the winner’s circle for his first win, and he’s also enjoying another new aspect of life with them. “Before I really had to watch what I ate,” said Olivo. “Now, the kids will want to go eat and I can say ‘Let’s go’ and not have to just watch.” Olivo is off to a great start in his new career as a Quarter Horse trainer. If he has half the success in Indiana that he’s had as a jockey, he will be well on his way to a bright future.
SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – April 29, 2016 – Victor Olivo has been a successful Quarter Horse jockey in Indiana for the past decade. He won the title at Indiana Grand in 2012 and is currently ranked in second place on the list of all-time leading Quarter Horse jockeys at Indiana Grand. However, at the end of the racing season in 2015, he rode his last horse back to be unsaddled. He knew it was time to pursue another avenue in Quarter Horse racing. Olivo took some horses to Hialeah to race this winter and went through the process to become a Quarter Horse trainer, receiving his license in Florida. He returned to Wilkinson, Ind. this spring as he always does, ready to race at Indiana Grand, only this time, he will have a different vantage point during the races. “It’s more exciting I think to be a trainer rather than a jockey,” said Olivo. “And I get more nervous. As a jockey I was always relaxed and went into every race the same, whether it was a claimer or a stakes race. Now, they all feel like stakes races to me.” Olivo didn’t wait long to visit the winner’s circle. He got his first training win with Carters Success in the final race Tuesday, April 26. He was mentored into training by Paul Martin. Olivo has been the jockey for all of Martin’s horses over the past four or five years, including the stable’s standout WH Design By Dash, who is nearing $300,000 in earnings. Martin also had an entry in the race,

Teams will consist of 5 different IBRA Members. Team entry fee is $100 pre-entered ($20 per team member) or $150 day of show ($30 per member) -100% Payback You may be on more than one team if you are running more than one horse. You may not run two horses on the same team. You may not enter the same horse for multiple teams. There will be a Long Go run in conjunction with the $10,000 Guaranteed that will determine the top 10 teams to come back for the Match Race Finals on Sunday. The Top 10 Teams to come back on Sunday will be determined on a point system based on the $10,000 Guaranteed results. 1st place in each division will receive 20 points, 2nd place 19, 3rd place 18 and so on down to 20th place which will receive 1 point. Your 5 team members’ points will be added together and the 10 teams with the highest cumulative points will advance to the finals. Ex: If you have one team member win a division and the other 4 hit barrels or fall below the top 20 mark in any division then you would have 20 total points for your team. The short go will begin anew; all qualified teams begin short go with zero points. Winners of short go will be determined using the same points system. Payback: 100% of the entry fees plus $2,000 added. 75% of the total purse will be split between the winning team. The remaining 25% will be paid out to the 3 fastest times of the finals paid 50%, 30%, 20%. Example: If there are 40 teams X 100 EF= $4,000 + $2,000 added = $6,000 purse. 75% is $4,500 split between winning team ($900 each) 25% is $1,500 paid to 3 fastest times. $750 to the fastest, $450 to second, $300 to third.

Balanced Joint Health
alance is a word we use a lot in our everyday lives: balanced budgets, balanced tires, balanced diets and balanced lives. Balance is also important to maintaining healthy equine joints. There are many causes of equine lameness, and there is no part of the horse’s body that stands alone in a state of balanced health. When an equine athlete is examined for a joint lameness issue, the joint in question is zeroed in but the horse’s whole body condition and any other problems should also be taken into consideration.
Here is some information about your horse’s joints: • • • •
•
Page 28
The equine joint is actually a highly complex structure made up of many connective tissues, including the bone, synovial fluid, articular cartilage and supporting soft tissue peri-articular structures. If any one of the structures is diseased or damaged, it affects joint function. The soft-tissue structures provide stability for the joint and include the joint capsule, tendons, ligaments and muscles. The articular cartilage is responsible for load distribution of the joint and is probably the most important part of the joint as far as joint diseases are concerned. Healthy cartilaginous tissues move over each other in a frictionless manner. Diseased cartilage or joints with osteoarthritis can lead to

progressive joint destruction as the joint becomes more and more unhealthy. Joint injections with the correct medications will help, but the horse’s care team (veterinarian, owner and trainer) must make sure there are no other contributing factors to the joint lameness. When a horse is at rest, the joint surfaces are not completely aligned, but when loaded, the joint surfaces in a healthy joint increase in contact surface, which increases stability of the joint. The cartilage acts as a shock absorber, but its ability to absorb shock is limited due to its limited thickness, so some of the shock goes to the subchondral bone. Subchondral bone is the bone underneath the joint surface. This bone becomes thicker with increased loads. Under such loads, the bone might show signs of pain and inflammation due to bruising or even microfractures, which could take weeks to heal. A strained or torn collateral ligament might take months to heal. There are several treatments that might shorten recovery time, but the main therapy is rest. These microfractures also lead to improved strength, flexibility and shock absorption if acquired at an acceptable rate and given time to heal. This is important to remember when setting training and competition schedules. • A horse might be sore in a certain joint because a collateral ligament has been stretched. This can cause joint laxity and eventual wear and tear on the joint cartilage. Muscles near the shoulder and hip provide stability to those large joints. • Again, injuries to these structures require rest. This is one instance where just routinely injecting a joint without a proper diagnosis might actually cause more damage to the horse. • Joint injections are an important but expensive part of keeping equine athletes healthy and sound. Joint injections at the right time and with the correct diagnosis help keep the successful team in balance. They can keep a horse’s joints healthy, allowing him to win and stay sound for the long term. • Done at the wrong time and for the wrong reasons, joint injections can throw the whole equation out of balance by hurting the horse and

Treating joint disease is not as simple as changing the oil in your car. Knowing the intricacies of a healthy joint will help the team – owner, trainer and veterinarian – make more informed decisions in treating joint lameness in equine athletes.

creating negative financial situations for the owner. Base treatment decisions on facts and not tradition or fear. In the repetitive work of performance and pleasure horses, it usually takes a minimum of 10 and usually 14 days for the bones and joints to recover after a speed work or race. Pushing speed works and races closer than that usually causes problems. Use chondroprotective steroids when injecting joints. Some steroids have insoluble crystals; cells that are markers of inflammation have been found around these crystals six weeks post injection. Chondroprotective steroids actually protect the joint.
• •
• When your horse eats healthier, his joints feel much better. Make sure all the supplements you give him are not overdone. This includes a ration that consists of 12-16 percent protein. Solid farrier work is important to keeping a horse’s hooves balanced and the shoes fitting correctly. The angles and the lateral balance affects the joints all the way up. Regular exercise increases circulation of nutrients into and wastes out of joints. It also strengthens the horse’s muscles and improves the horse’s attitude, appetite and overall sense of well-being.
Check your horse’s legs after every ride for joint swelling, heat or tenderness.

•
• Joint pain is a good indicator of joint disease although the degree of joint pain might not correspond with the degree of joint disease. The articular cartilage does not have nerves, so it is not until the surrounding support structures become inflamed that any sensory nerves in the joint are stimulated. A joint with inflammation or osteoarthritis often exhibits decreased range of motion. This can be caused by synovial effusion or excessively low molecular weight synovial fluid, edema of the supporting structures or fibrosis of the supporting structures. Excessive joint fluid can destabilize the joint. Decreased viscosity of the synovial fluid due to a decrease in the joint concentration of hyaluronate. There are several tests that can determine the degree of viscosity of the joint fluid, but a simple method is to look at it visually: A drop of normal synovial fluid should string between the thumb and index finger if the fingers are spread out.

Early recognition of joint disease is important because, just as with any other disease process, earlier treatment is more effective and less expensive than delayed treatment, even if that treatment is merely rest.

COWBOY MOUNTED SHOOTING
1st Ohio hosted a fantastic shooting clinic along with a weekend of shooting at the KY Cowtown (indoor) Arena, in Williamstown, KY. We had a great crowd of wanna get their feet wet shooters, new shooters, and seasoned shooters. Our clinic covered horsemanship, equipment, problem solving and course management. Jesse Peters, Bobby Ruwe, Joyce McKinney and John St Clair worked together to help horses and people get going on the right track to get their shooting career started and continued correctly.
We Thank Jesse, Bobby, Joyce and John for all the attention shared with the clinic members, their horses and auditors. Every minute of the clinic time was generously given to each individual. Jesse brought toys for the horses and riders for experience to build confidence and learn new tecniqes. Everyone got new ideas of how to get thing accomplished and new ways to learn. If anyone would like to continue their progress with Jesse Peters you can find him on face book, there you can make contact and arrangements to visit his “play pen” at the ranch to learn even more. Our shoot on Saturday night was well attended with 28 shooters and 2 Wranglers. Our Overall & Men’s Champion was Kentucky’s Dennis Clevenger. John St Clair from Ohio was Reserve Cowboy. Kentucky Cowgirl Lori Montgomery riding Smokey was Overall Cowgirl with

Rain...rain...rain! That seems to be the everyday activity around our part of the country. With no indoor arena it sure is tough getting horses ready to go shoot. They don’t get rode enough unless we can take them indoors somewhere, its too cool to bath them and the 5 layers of MUD just doesn’t brush off very well. This cowgirl’s new horse is grey, well he is supposed to be grey, however he is mostly brown from rolling in the MUD! Boy! does he like to roll and does he like mud!
Jenessa Hill claiming the reserve spot for the Cowgirls, Wrangler Champion was Cowboy Ian Boettcher with Elizabeth Kreimer the Reserve Champion Wrangler . Elizabeth is brand new Wrangler, her first clinic was on Saturday and her first shoot was Saturday night. She had a BLAST and said she can’t wait to do it again! Our Shoot on Sunday had 40 shooters riding hard, fast and trying to shoot clean! Dennis Clevenger cranked up his pony once again capturing the Overall & Champion Cowboy position with a time of 61.017. Devin Clevenger, his son, was pouring on the heat turning in a 61.126 for the reserve spot. Jenssa Hill was the Overall Cowgirl. Carrie Bowling riding her new horse gave it her all and was reserve Cowgirl. Top Ten: 1. Dennis Clevenger 61.017, 2nd Devin Clevenger 61.126. 3rd Cary Barrow 67.823. 4th John St Clair 71.417. 5th. Jenessa Hill 73.557. 6th Alan Cornett 79.264. 7th. Brad Mehlorn 80.578. 8th. Jesse Peters 81.076. 9th Ben Butler 81.367. 10th. Carrie Bowling 83.460. Memorial Day Weekend we move back to our home arena, the Gymkhana Club Arena on Harrison Ave, in Miamitown, Ohio. We start off the weekend with a Friday evening clinic with seasoned shooters helping new shooters along with lower level shooters get some important tips, course management and shooting practice.
CMSA News could use some help from the “ BIG COWBOY” in this time of need. Cindy is mom to one of our newest shooters Angie Colon. Alan Cornett’’s mother also passed away, she was 93 years young. Alan, Pam, family & friends were extremely lucky to have been able to share so many years with her. 1st Ohio members send prayers for the family. In April we sang HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Tracy Snyder on April 2, Eric Nelson turned one year older on the 7th. The 24th Steven Robertson’s day was celebrated and on the 28th a special celebration for Lila Robertson’s birthday. In May we wished our Mother’s a Happy Day on the 8th. The 19th will host a special Bday for Diana Sage, our 1st Ohio secretary. Don’t relax cause the Hot Headed Hussie “Connie App” celebrates on the 24th. On the 28th during our shoot weekend we will congratulate Lynette Traylor on her BDay. June is usually full of parties celebrating Graduations! However on the 15th Steve Spenlau will celebrate another year. Plus we will wish our Dad’s a fun day for Father’s Day on the 19th and celebrate the first day of Summer on the 20th!
Our Saturday shoot is a special shoot “Shooting for Silver Buckles”, our third annual, every class wins a buckle! There are 24 classes in cowboy mounted shooting plus the Wrangler divisions, limited & open. Montana Silversmith is busy producing our special awards, I am certain we will see happy, happy faces when the shooters win their new buckle’s! We are asking for special prayers for the family of Cindy Mayer, this cowgirl lost her battle with cancer a couple of weeks ago. Her family

Advice to fellow barrel racers: I’ve always been told that if you get bucked off, get back in the saddle, and I feel that is the way we should live our lives, never afraid to climb back on, even if it means getting bucked off again. ---------------------------Name: Gracie Conway Age: 13 Hometown: Muncie, IN School: Cowan Junior High School, 7th grade Parents: Christa & Vick Who taught you to ride and when: My parents have both taught me how to ride, I guess you could say I was riding before I was born. Parents or Siblings ride: My parents both grew up barrel racing, so did my brother and I. My brother and I are the fourth generation to be barrel racing. Horses: My most trustful horse is Butler Did It aka Butler, he is 25 years old but is still clocking 1d times. He has been part of our family for 23 years. Clint Clint is a graduate of East Central High School. His parents are Terrie VanVolkenburgh and respectively Joe Trentman. He has grown up in the horse world, both parents have rode almost all their life...Clint's grandfather as some of you may remember was the late Terry VanVolkenburgh, who would run up and down the fences when his daughters would run barrels. Clint began barrel racing at the age of 4 with a pony, then went on to particpate in Jr. Rodeo and his favorite event was the sheep riding, hard to believe he is now a barrel racer. He has won the Ohio Youth NBHA and Indiana Youth and Open NBHA , he has also won the Congress youth barrel four times, and was runner up in the Congress Sweepstakes. He placed at Josey Jr. world numerous times, and won the NBHA Youth World 1D in 2006. He loves to barrel race and is now trying his hand at the futurities. In Clint's spare time he mows grass for a part time job and is also very active in his church where he and his cousins are bible school helpers. Clint also volunteers one day a week at a school in Cincinatti where he spends time tutoring other kids in reading.

IJRA – Where Mamas want their babies to grow up to be cowboys (and cowgirls!) Rodeo Moms – they might be labeled a different breed, but boy are we thankful for them. This year we had a rodeo on Mother’s Day and had the chance to let our moms know how thankful we are for them. One mom stepped up and gave us an insight to her day at the rodeo.
What It Means To Be A Rodeo Mom (By Leeanne Borman - at left with daughter, Dakota)
Watching in anticipation, adrenaline pumps and blood rushes just as much as the rider. It’s a life style where lessons are learned! Starting with this statement “Dakota load your ropes, is all your tack loaded? Do you have your goat string? What are we missing?” Being a rodeo mom means traveling on the road every weekend, packing the trailer, planning meals and making sure you always have extra.
RODEO DAY: Daily Check List starting with chores -Go 90 MPH day of Rodeo, rubber bands, goat string, rosin, ropes/baby powder, spurs, barrier string, different boots, safety pins for back #’s. Tack changes on the fly, phone ready, photographer, cheerleader, mentor & friend. A mom to others, other kids as your own, friends along the way, relationships built. It’s a RODEO FAMILY all in 1 achieving the same goals. Say a prayer before entering the arena and before every run. Rodeo weekends are peaceful days spent with my family, there is no turning back after finding the love of a sport that is endlessly satisfying. Its guts & love & glory.

Shelby Wright, Miss Indiana High School Rodeo Queen 2015 The term “rodeo queen” is a combination of words that the majority of Hoosiers do not come across on a daily, monthly, or even yearly basis. For me, they are two words I’ve been very familiar with since I was a young girl. Like most girls, my mom has always been my hero and a person I look up to. When I was a child, she always told me stories of her past experiences and accomplishments she had within the sport of rodeo. One accomplishment in particular always stuck out to me, and that was my mom had been a rodeo queen. I thought it was such a special title and even told my friends on the playground I was a princessbecause my mom was the queen. I knew one day, when I came of age, I wanted to follow in her exact footsteps. My interest and love for the sport of rodeo came to me at a very young age. Although I didn’t compete in events, I still rode horses and attended rodeos all across the country. I couldn’t get enough of all of the enthusiasm, excitement, and energy! In the beginning of my junior year in high school, my mom, grandma, and I travelled to the panhandle of Texas and bought my first rodeo horse. After competing in high school rodeos for a year, I was finally eligible for the queen title. The competition consisted of a horsemanship pattern, a speech, an interview, an

impromptu question, and a test. Sure enough Saturday night of the State Finals rodeo held in New Castle, Indiana, my dreams came true as I was crowned Miss Indiana High School Rodeo Queen 2015-2016.

IHSRA NEWS I was a delegate at the NHSRA Mid Winter Meeting held in Chattanooga, Tennessee. I have also attended numerous rodeos throughout year and have educated others about the Indiana High School Rodeo Association. Recently, I assisted at the Indiana Horse Council Queen Contest and shared a booth at the Hoosier Horse Fair with Miss Rodeo Indiana 2016. Words can not describe what this past year as Miss Indiana High School Rodeo has meant to me. I’ve gained so many friendships and skills that will last a lifetime. It has been an experience I will always cherish. I can’t thank everyone enough, especially my mom, for all of their support and willingness to lend a helping hand. The National High School Rodeo’s mission statement is to promote the sport of rodeo and the highest type of conduct and sportsmanship and expose its positive image to the general public, preserve the Western heritage, offer a privilege of family bonding, offer an opportunity of continuing education, and maintain the highest regard for the livestock. Contestants compete in events from bronc riding to barrel racing, and even shooting and cutting. I could not be more proud to represent such a great organization! I immediately made it my mission to promote the toughest sport on dirt to the highest standard. Rodeo means so much to me it is my job to be that advocate and positive influence people look up to. Being a rodeo queen is much more than being a pretty face, wearing sparkly outfits, and signing autographs. I first represented Indiana at the National High School Finals Rodeo held in Rock Springs, Wyoming. There, I received Top 10 Honors in numerous categories. At every rodeo, I am in charge of grand entry and carry the American flag horseback to the national anthem. During performances, I sell raffle tickets to help raise money for the INHSRA. I also take pictures and sign autographs for fans. In January,

Balance (Sit Still!) I can still hear my dad’s voice from the sidelines telling me to “sit still” while running barrels on my little red roan mare, Roany (original name, I know.) She wasn’t a very big mare and if I leaned or shifted my weight from center it was enough to throw her off and possibly cause us to knock a barrel down. I became very aware while riding Roany, that horses are very sensitive, even the bigger built horses;) I mean, if a horse can feel a tiny fly land on them and will twitch or swish a tail to get rid of the fly, how much more do the notice a rider up there that can’t sit in the middle with a little balance? I had a young man (probably 15 or 16 at the time) come to me asking advice on how to help his horse make up some time in the arena. I had watched the young man ride for several years and as he started to grow, his riding style started to hinder him more than he realized. You see, he had started a bad habit at a young age of riding off center and “throwing” his body around on top of his horse. When he was smaller his horse’s performance wasn’t affected by his overexaggerated movements, but as he grew and gained weight it, his horse had a hard time working with a “monkey on his back.” A little unorthodox, but I suggested he give me a piggy back ride and try to run a straight line, He did, with as little trouble as one can have giving a piggy back ride! Then I had him try again while I leaned and threw my weight around.....not as easy and definitely not as fast as the first time. He immediately understood what I was trying to show him and from then on he made a conscious effort to sit still on his horse’s back and his competition times improved!
INSPIRATION
I’ve watched a lot of folks run barrels and some are very successful with a lot of “body action,” but I think some of the most successful riders with longevity are those that ride balanced and quiet in the saddle allowing their horses to work with as little interference as possible from the rider on it’s back. There’s just something to be said about balance and stillness. Our horses need it from us as their “leaders” and we need it in our lives to remain focused and rejuvenated. I find myself more and more thinking about balance in my life. I tend to be the kind of person who always has a project that needs finishing. I have a hard time stopping until the
Page 38
work is done and that is not a bad thing...but sometimes I just need to shut the office door, hang up the tools or call it a day in the barn and take time to sit out on the deck with my family and enjoy living this life I’m blessed to have. We are in a busy time of our life with kids running us all directions, trying to keep the barn running smoothly, the house clean, the laundry done, not to mention the regular work that helps pay for all the rest. It becomes hard to keep it all balanced and I find myself “leaning” towards one busy part of my life or another for longer than I should. When I feel myself slipping into the pattern of “throwing” myself at the tasks at hand just to get them done, life isn’t a joy and I get stressed instead of blessed. That’s when I have to remind myself of those words from Dad so many years ago... “Sit still.” (Find your balance.) So simple, but sometimes so hard. For me, the best way to find my balance is to stop what I am doing and reach out to Jesus. I just ask him to put me back in HIS WILL.
How much more balanced can we be than if we are seeking God’s will, right? That always works for me. ALWAYS. We get more out of my life when we put God first and seek a nice balance of all the things that need done and that are important to us. Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 There is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every event under heaven-- A time to give birth and a time to die; A time to plant and a time to uproot what is planted. A time to kill and a time to heal; A time to tear down and a time to build up. A time to weep and a time to laugh; A time to mourn and a time to dance. A time to throw stones and a time to gather stones; A time to embrace and a time to shun embracing. A time to search and a time to give up as lost; A time to keep and a time to throw away. A time to tear apart and a time to sew together; A time to be silent and a time to speak. A time to love and a time to hate; A time for war and a time for peace. Sit still! Happy Trails & God Bless! BEATIN’ THE BUNKHOUSE BLUES Shorty rolled out of his bunk His feet hit the floor Reachin` for his boots It was quite a chore
And for some reason His mouth was still full of dirt
As he pulled them on His ol` bones began to ache Grittin`his teeth It was almost more than he could take One of the young hands Smilin` said mornin` gramps You’re a` movin` kind`a slow Do you have the cramps
Then he had himself a biscuit But it hurt to chew Just starin` at his plate Was about all he could do But as the minutes passed And he stretched a mite He turned to the youngsters Said we’re burin` daylight He hopped to his feet Said boys I feel fine Time to try that ol` paint Today he is mine
The youngsters all laughed Shorty just pulled up a chair Sat down at the table Breathed in the morning air
Yep yesterday He threw me a time or two But he’s an outlaw That’s what they’re suppose to do
With his first drink of coffee His teeth began to hurt
I might be long in the tooth My hair is all grey But I have no worries Boys I learned to pray A few years ago I was up a tree But the ramrod came along He had a plan for me Then I came here Started ridin` for the brand The ramrod made me a twister Cause I had sand Boys you need to learn You can’t ride `em all Just saddle up and ride When you hear the ramrod call Yep life can buck you off Sometimes I hit the ground
But if you noticed The ramrod keeps me around So go ahead and laugh Because I’m a bit slow But if you look I’m up and ready to go See y’all at the corral I’ll be on that ol` paint I love ridin` for the brand And I don’t have a single complaint By: Bro. Brad Curtis Vilonia, AR 10/29/10

One Last (& most important) thought… Salvation is a gift and a choice......
But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. Romans 5:15 For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Romans 10: 9-10

Jesus died on the cross as the final sacrifice for our sins. He was resurrected on the 3rd day and he defeated death and Satan for us. All we have to do is believe that He beat death, acknowledge it with our words and accept Him as our personal savior. That’s when the rebirth happens and we are changed! He then promises us eternal life with Him in Heaven! You can’t earn your way into Heaven; you have to accept His gift of salvation. So many people think they “aren’t good enough” to get to Heaven… But… Salvation is a GIFT from God and you don’t earn a gift. Gifts are given to you and for the gift to be yours, you have to accept it. All we have to do is accept this wonderful gift. I know I have…won’t you?

Perfect
Human: “It was perfect, absolutely perfect!” God: “No, not really, actually, not really, at all; in fact, not even close to really, at all.” Human: “Oh, he/she is just the perfect man/woman, husband/wife, father/ mother!” God: “Even more, not really, actually, not really, at all; in fact, not even close to really, at all.” Human: “The steak was prepared perfectly, last night.” God: “Is anyone listening to me? Can we all say it together? Let’s try. All together now, ‘not really, actually, not really, at all; in fact, not even close to really, at all’.” Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” Matthew 5:48
INSPIRATION
Human: “What makes you so perfect, God? We have many perfect things – ‘perfect storms’, ‘perfect games’, ‘perfect pitch’, ‘perfect record’, what makes you so differently perfect?” God: “Well, let us consider ‘perfect storm’. It is a meteorological, nautical, atmospheric phenomena where unique, usually
isolated, forces combine unusually in catastrophic, historic proportions to produce epic results. Human: “Kind of a negative example, but it is ‘perfect’”. God: “I created all the forces powerful enough, the “laboratory” big enough, and the combination unique enough to produce all which is necessary to have a perfect storm.” Human: “How about the ‘perfect game’ in baseball? It is historically documented how rare it is for a pitcher to have a perfect game – no hits, no walks, no errors, no baserunners. God: “If I was pitching there would be no balls, just 81 straight strikes and the game would be over.”
God: “Good example, but you have forgotten through my creations I brought you notes, pitch, tone, voice and the physiological mechanism from which it is all produced”. Human: “Well, what about a ‘perfect record’? It’s where a team goes undefeated for a season.” God: “Yes, I know what it is. (Chuckle, smirk, wink) Have you forgotten who I am? Of course, I know what a ‘perfect season’ is. By the way, I am undefeated for all of history. Look up Israelites vs. Egyptians, David vs. Goliath, Daniel vs. Lions, Jesus vs. Sin.” Human: “So, I guess you believe “perfect” belongs to you. There is nothing perfect about us.”
God: “Any others you want to talk about?”
God: “Not really, actually, not really, at all; in fact, not even close to really, at all. You are perfect in my eyes when you give your imperfection to me.”
Human: “How about ‘perfect pitch’”?
Human: “Wow, that is perfect!”
Human: “Show off !”
God: “It is rare to find a voice with the perfect pitch, perfect tone, perfect notes.”
LivExceptionally, Chris
Human: “It sure is. It is why we call it ‘perfect’.”

Barks N Bits Bella Good Riddance and Good Heavens!
Barks N Bits w/Bella

Farewell, Conway Kitty! I was all worked up last month about him stealing my thunder and my sunning spots for nothing! Little did I know that the lady was only letting the kitty live here until she could find him another home...phew!!!! Conway Kitty went to have a couple parts removed last week and is on his way to his new home as I type. I hate to admit that I do not miss the meowing nuisance and I am happy to say that I now have my sunning spots all to myself again! Good Riddance! Spring around here is always fun, but this year I am getting more entertainment out of Miss Maybelline than anything else. Let me fill you in.
Throwback w/Chuck
The lady has once again filled the chicken house up with the little feather covered squawk boxes and Miss Maybelline is OBSESSED! Each time the door opens to outside, Miss Maybelline heads to the chicken house and her “lookout post” (at least that is what she calls it....it’s really just an old bale of straw
Flashback with Bella
First of all....”Thank God for the rain!! The itching has subsided, finally! I am sure my people are glad that I am over that, I know I sure am. It was becoming almost as annoying as a the snores that now resonate from the little black bark box as she snoozes on the couch midday. (While no one else is able to enjoy what once was a peaceful nap time around here.)
We have recently spent a lot of time on the road. Early in October we made an eight hour trip to Iowa. The whole family was able to go and attend the 2010 Midwest Match Barrel Race in Cedar Rapids. This included Miss Annabelle. She was in rare form, as usual. I was glad we didn’t know many people over there, she embarrassed me a few times barking at anything and everything that moved. She even tried to “attack” another dog. (If you can consider a lunge from a “brat”wurst on legs an attack.) And of course, your truly was left to baby-sit in the home on wheels. I wish they would have left me a thicker blanket....to muffle incessant shrill barks from the Princess at every passerby. Our trip was overall a success, everyone had a great time and from what I understand, our
that just happens to be short enough that she can manage jump on top of it.) She then proceeds to intimidate the chickens through the wire,,,or at least she thinks she is intimidating. The chickens just ignore her. I hate to admit it but I can’t help but peek in on her....Good Heavens, she is so ridiculous! I keep waiting for the lady to let her in there with the chickens one time! They would scare her to death with their clucking and feather flying craziness. Now that would be worth paying to watch! In honor of Miss Maybelline and her new obsession with chickens I thought I would include a throwback to my favorite rooster, Chuck. Enjoy!
On the Road Again.....

ladies team was voted the best dressed. (It was a good thing they weren’t picky about the white hairs I tend to leave on black jeans.) We also got to spend some time with wonderful friends at their home. (Thank you, Willards!) They even had some dogs that lived with them that entertained Annie, which gave me a nice break. Shortly after our trip to Iowa, we made the five hour drive to Lake Cumberland in Kentucky. This time it was a mini-vacation for me....no Annie!!!! I got some serious sleeping done, chased a few squirrels and enjoyed some peace and quiet. I didn’t get to ride the boat this time, boo! I really enjoy sitting up in the front, although I don’t care much for the contraption they put on me when I take a swim. Mostly it is a nice break from the ranch and the “outside dogs.” And this time it was a break from Princess Annabelle. I hated to come home. That’s about the extent of the excitement for me this month. I did have a reader send in a question about my writing methods that I thought it was worth answering. The reader wanted to know how it is that I can hold onto a pen or pencil to write my column (since I have paws and no fingers.)
The answer is simple. I do not use a pen or pencil. I prefer to type. (My small paws fit nicely on the keys and the computer has spellcheck.) Until next month, enjoy some traveling with your family. As for me, I’ve had enough for a while....I’m gonna stay home and catch up on my napping.....if I could just get that incessant snoring to stop.
