LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
F
all has fell. The leaves are pretty much removed from the trees, thanks to Mr. Wind. My horses are “fluffing up” and my feet are already cold. The good thing about this time of year is that we have some great holidays sneaking up on us. This is a good thing if you are ready for them when they arrive. (I am usually not, but I am a sucker for family gatherings and good food, so I tend to improvise.) Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays, as I am sure it is for many others. I really enjoy the food, but I believe that the reason I enjoy this time of year so much is the time spent with friends and family. Life gets so hectic for most of us and Thanksgiving gives us a couple days to focus on what most likely gets pushed to the “back burner” all too often. It would be great if we could keep that mentality all year - putting what should be first at the top of the list every day. Another thing this time of year brings is great riding weather! Whether at home or trailering somewhere, fall seems to have a particular feel and even a particular smell. Cool crisp air and frisky horses make it fun to ride “old faithful”.....a little unnerving to jump on the “feel good” three year old that has been turned out for the last four days. But, I will admit that I love to go to a barrel race when it is a little on the chilly side. I just could do without the extreme cold that inevitably follows.
This past month has flown by with the many exciting events that have taken place. We attended the 2010 Midwest Match Barrel Race in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. It was a great time and a great facility there at Kirkwood Community College’s Equine Center. Our son, Garrett got to compete on the Men’s Indiana Match team with his dad, which meant a lot to both of them. I competed on the Indiana Girl’s team and our daughter Gracie got to compete as an Interstate team rider. The Match is always a fun time and this year was no different. Minnesota took the overall time award, and the spirit award. Indiana won best dressed. We hope to have more coverage of this event in next month’s issue As for this issue, read about the IBRA National Finals that were held in Wilmington, Ohio this past October as well as Lookin At Lucky’s appearance at Hoosier Park that includes some great pictures by Steven Heuertz.. We also have the latest from our favorite Jack Russell, Bella. November means it is time for the Annual Stallion Calendar to come together. We are working on the finishing touches and should have them available by the first of December. Watch for a link to purchase yours on our website at www.thehorseresource.com. The should also be available at the BFA World Championship Barrel Futurity in Oklahoma City in December. For those of you with stallions, be sure to contact our sales staff to reserve your advertising for the 2011 breeding season, it will be here before you know it. We have some of the best prices for the best quality. QHRAI members be sure to check out the FREE Classifieds offer being given by QHRAI. The information and form can be found on page 19. Fill out the form and mail it back to us- or email us the information by the dates noted to have your ad in our December or January issue. Take care and have a very BLESSED Thanksgiving! And of course... Until next month, ......Spend some time with friends and family, give thanks to the One it’s due, and remember to count your blessings on horseback... God Bless and ride safe, Christa Conway

Eyes Got Hope, Hooked On Magic Win $100,000 Quarter Horse Stakes Cox, who currently has 50 horses racing, resides in North Carolina but is currently based in Oklahoma. In addition to his racing stock, he has a farm with 20 to 25 brood mares and although this was his first trip to Indiana this year, he has frequently raced at Hoosier Park in the past. “My girlfriend is actually from this area,” said Cox. “We love this place and always like to race here. We’ll go to Florida and Louisiana for the winter, but we’ll be back next year.” The win for Collins was one of two on the day. Collins, a native of North Carolina, also earned his second straight leading rider title for Quarter Horses in 2010 with 15 wins. He rallied home on an additional winner Saturday, Oct. 23 as he guided Hooked On Magic to victory in the $100,000 Sterlie Bertram Memorial.

yes Got Hope and rider Harold Collins rallied from the back of the pack to take top honors in the 14th running of the $100,000 Hoosier Park Classic Saturday, Oct. 23. The duo completed the 400yard dash in a time of :20.360 seconds to stay undefeated in three starts this year. Starting from post eight in the 10-horse lineup, Eyes Got Hope broke well, but the inside horses immediately got the early advantage with Bright Eyed Vision and Juan Delgado getting the first few calls. Bright Eyed Vision continued to lead the field and would be the sole horse to catch in the final strides. Eyes Got Hope began to kick into gear late and rallied up just in time, nipping Bright Eyed Vision at the wire for the win by only a head. Burrs Tictac and Aron Hunt rallied into third.
Starting from post six in the center of the 10-horse pack, Hooked On Magic got a clean break and was in contention for the top spot from the start. Halfway through the 350-yard dash, the three-year-old son of Heza Fast Dash took over, winning by one and one-quarter lengths in a time of :18.098 seconds. Havanna Gold and Shanley Jackson closed quickly on the outside for second while Fillemup Phil and Tom C. Johns held steady along the inside for third.
After not winning any races in 2009, Eyes Got Hope is now three for three in 2010 with earnings in excess of $88,000. The five-yearold grey gelding by Mr Eye Opener is perfect over Hoosier Park’s oval and has been steered by Collins in each of his wins. Gene Cox owns Eyes Got Hope and James Dean Locklear is the trainer. “I bought this horse (Eyes Got Hope) at the beginning of the year,” said Cox. “He had a good eye and we liked the looks of him. Everybody loves this horse. He gets along with everyone that works with him.”

QHRAI News The win for Hooked On Magic was his third of the year in seven outings. His career bankroll increased to more than $120,000 with the Bertram win for owner Diana Moster of Seymour, Ind. and trainer Raul Hernandez. More than 25 friends and family members of Sterlie Bertram were on hand for the trophy presentation. A special engraved plate was presented to the immediate family of Bertram, who was a wellknown figure in the Quarter Horse racing world in Indiana.
Got Courage Wins QHRAI Derby
Lovemelikethat Wins Miss Roxie Little Futurity
Lovemelikethat and Julie Veltman found the fastest gear at the end of the race to grab the title in the second running of the Miss Roxie Little Futurity Sunday, Oct. 24 at Hoosier Park Racing & Casino. The duo earned the win in a time of :17.955 seconds, just shy of the stakes record set by I Is It and Harold Collins in 2009 in a time of :17.953. Lovemelikethat appeared a little nervous in the gates for Veltman, but as soon as the gates sprung, she was all business. The two-year-old filly by Likenothinyoueversaw broke alertly and had her focus on the wire. Hit An Awesome High and Collins got the early advantage along the inside and pulled away from the field of nine in the early stages of the 350-yard dash. However, Lovemelikethat hit a new gear midway through the race and began to close the gap, getting by Hit An Awesome High in the final step to win the race by the margin of one-half length. Race favorite Stole N Loot and Aron Hunt also closed quickly to grab the third place spot for leading trainer Ron Raper. Lovemelikethat has three wins in five starts for her freshman campaign. The Indianabred filly pushed her career earnings to more than $86,000 for owner Cooter Daniel of Rutledge, Tenn., who works in the country music recording industry. John McCreary trains Lovemelikethat.
Got Courage Got Courage and jockey Carter Riley picked up an easy victory in the 14th running of the $75,000 QHRAI Derby Saturday, Oct. 23 at Hoosier Park. The stakes, which started at a purse of $10,000, is one of three that kicked off pari-mutuel Quarter Horse racing in the state of Indiana in 1997. Starting from post four, Got Courage emerged from the gate in good form, and her positioning continued to get better with every step. The three-year-old Metallic Lion filly got an early jump on the field and increased her hold on the front by midstretch in the 400-yard dash. In the end, she was an easy winner by one and onehalf lengths over Royal Snow White and Shanley Jackson to bring in the top prize for owner Guadalupe Arevalo and trainer Rolando Almanza. Apollos By Pass and Harold Collins rounded out the trifecta. “I told Rolando (Almanza) that if she (Got Courage) runs as good as she did last time, that they won’t catch her,” said Riley. “On the first jump we were ok. On the second jump, we got better and on the third jump, I knew we had it. She’s a nice filly and does everything so easy.” Got Courage is now a perfect two for two at Hoosier Park after winning her trial, the only two starts of 2010. She increased her bankroll to more than $56,000 in career earnings. Got Courage is now five for eight lifetime with only one start out of the top three.

The win for Veltman was her first attempt aboard Lovemelikethat. Veltman, who won the leading Quarter Horse jockey title at Hoosier Park in 2005, is ranked fourth on the list of all-time leading Quarter Horse riders at the track with 34 wins. Veltman also picked up a win in the first race of the day aboard the Thoroughbred, Hatchet Jack, who is trained by Tony Cunningham, also a former leading Quarter Horse trainer at the track.

QHRAI News racing in the state of Indiana in 1997, starting with a purse of $10,000 and now offering a purse of $75,000. Starting from post four, Jazz Be First, ridden by Manuel Gutierrez, experienced some bumping out of the gate but quickly recovered and got focused on the 350-yard dash. Midway through the race he and Endless Ocean from the outside were neck and neck for the lead. However, in the final stages Jazz Be First was able to get the edge on Endless Ocean and win the race by a neck in a time of :17.687 seconds. Tortuga Tony and Francisco Raul Ramirez Jr. closed quickly on the far outside for third.
One Tough Dude One Tough Dude Wins Bradford Stakes
One Tough Dude and Francisco Raul Ramirez Jr. edged out nine other opponents in the 12th running of the Bradford Stakes at Hoosier Park Racing & Casino Sunday, Oct. 24. The gelding covered the 350-yard dash during the final day of racing for 2010 in a time of :17.521 seconds to take home the top prize in the $70,000 event. Starting from post seven, One Tough Dude and Ramirez came out of the gate clean and got into gear quickly. The four-year-old son of Corona Cartel was one of the first leaders by a slim margin, but as the race continued to unfold, his dominance became more evident. In the final stages of the race, race favorite One Tough Dude began to pull away from the competition, earning the win by one length over Finche and Tom Wellington on the outside. Struttin High and Harold Collins were close along the inside for third. One Tough Dude now has three wins in five starts for 2010. Owned by Hector Manuel Belloso, he now has more than $130,000 in career earnings. Denny Bland, who picked up the horse at the beginning of 2010, trains One Tough Dude. “This is just a heck of a horse,” said Bland. “We train him on the farm. We walk him and pony him and then we bring him in here and gallop him. It’s just no telling how good he is. He has just been excellent. He actually came in to this race not training well, but he got it don
Jazz Be First Wins Governor’s Stake
Jazz Be First is now three for five in 2010. The two-year-old son of Bono Jazz increased his bankroll to more than $50,000 with his latest victory. Alejandro Medina owns and Ricardo Martinez trains the California-bred colt. Jazz Be First, who previously raced at Los Alamitos prior to his trip to Indiana for the Governor’s Stake, nearly equaled the stakes record. His time of :17.687 seconds was just short of the stakes record of :17.652 seconds set in 2009 by Stone Heading West and rider Rodney Prescott. The time for Jazz Be First was also close to the track record for 350 yards at Hoosier Park. The record was established during the first year of Quarter Horse racing in 1997 by Loyd Gaels Jet in a time of :17.340 seconds.
Raper, Collins Repeat As Champs in Quarter Horse Ranks
Ron Raper and Harold Collins topped the Quarter Horse standings again this year, winning the training title and jockey title, respectively. Raper earned his fifth title in the past six years while Collins picked up his second title at Hoosier Park Racing & Casino. Raper, a native of Michigan, saddled nine winners to earn his leading trainer award. Now a resident of North Carolina where he bases his stable during the winter months, Raper leads the list of all-time leading trainers for wins at Hoosier Park with 71 wins. Raper also eclipsed the $1 million mark in career earnings during the 2010, becoming the only trainer to do so in the 14-year history of parimutuel Quarter Horse racing in the state of Indiana. “We like it in Indiana,” said Raper. “It feels good to have another good year. We bought a farm here a few years back and we are making it our home during the summer.” Jeff Smith, general manager of racing, made the presentations to both Raper and Collins during the final day of racing Sunday, Oct. 24.
Jazz Be First Jazz Be First followed up his dominant trial win to record the victory in the 14th running of the Governor’s Stake Sunday, Oct. 24. The race is one of three stakes that kicked off pari-mutuel Quarter Horse

Also returning to the leader board in 2010 was jockey Harold Collins, who scored 15 wins during the 35 days of Quarter Horse action. Collins, also a native of North Carolina, now has 42 wins in only three years of riding at the Anderson, Ind. track, ranking second behind Carter Riley, who has 48 career wins at Hoosier Park. Collins completed the final weekend of racing with a bang, scoring wins in both the $100,000 Hoosier Park Classic and the $100,000 Sterlie Bertram Memorial on Saturday, Oct. 23. Collins also returns to North Carolina for the winter before heading back to Indiana in the spring for the racing season. Four owners scored three wins apiece in the owner standings. Diana Moster, Sofia Gallegos, Gene Cox, and Hector Belloso each won three races. Eyes Got Hope, winner of the $100,000 Hoosier Park Classic on Saturday, Oct. 23, was the leading horse for the meet, winning all three of his starts for a total of $86,989 in earnings.

News A Special Athlete Died Last Week
walk and trot that they seemed to gel together. When she went to speed him up she realized he didn’t want to run. She could not get him past a long trot. She tried and tried and could not figure out what to do. Devastated after a year and a half with her parents urging, she put him up for sale or for free...no takers. Her parents, trying to ease the pain of eventually selling Bill, bought a fast horse for Callie Jo. Whether something clicked from the movie Seabiscuit, they didn’t know, but one day decided to hold one horse and ride the other one. The horses would compete with each other. Within three weeks that slow “Bill” horse was outrunning the fast one, and could turn on a dime from the 1 1/2 years of slow work. As the years went by Callie Jo and Bill won state, Quarter Horse Congress, National Pole bending twice, AQHYA reserve world. She became one of the best in the country in pole bending and could run with some of the best barrel racers as well, it did not matter if it was adult or youth, pros or amateurs. They became a well know pair, the girl with the horse Bill, that wore ribbons. She couldn’t understand why the younger girls would follow her around. They just wanted to pet Bill and be her friend. Eventually there were lots of horses that wore ribbons. It seemed the little girls were inspired by Callie Jo and Bill. They both loved to compete. Callie would say that Bill would get mad if he didn’t get to go to shows regularly. Others would say Bill ran so fast because he was embarrassed to be a boy with ribbons in his hair.
A seven time State Champion, two time National Champion, Reserve World champion and winner of one of the largest competitions in the world died at age eleven of a possible aneurysm. Way too soon he is gone, he should have competed well into his twenties. He is known for wearing ribbons in his hair and sparkles when he competed. People recognized him all over the country with his trademark ribbons. He was well known in the circles where he competed, and well respected. His name was Bill and his local trainer was Callie Jo Freidt. While 17 year old Callie Jo was riding her 11 year old AQHA sorrel gelding, Paycos Bill, loping circles at home, Bill’s legs gave out. He fell forward and died with her still on him. She knew right away he was gone. Callie Jo was keeping him in shape for Quarter Horse Congress, the largest Quarter Horse Show in the world. Bill and Callie Jo won during the Congress in 2009. Callie Jo is physically ok, a possible concussion and some deep bruises, but those were not noticed until a couple days after Bill’s untimely death. Callie Jo’s father said that, “a part of her died that night.” As she realized her loved one was gone, she and her family cried. She went to stay at a friend’s house saying,”With him gone I have no reason to live.”
She was offered 100 times what she paid for him and would not take it. She said he was part of her. When she was teased in school or had a bad day, she would just sit on him and tell him about it. They once ran a pole competition bareback on a dare and won. She said she couldn’t fall off, they were part of each other. When they were young and she did fall off, the gelding would stop and nose bump her to make sure she was alright. She once said he was my identity to the world. While her friends were partying, she was competing every weekend and taking care of horses. Her life, friends and boyfriends revolved around the horse shows.
Callie Jo bought this horse when they were both young and with her own money. She went with her family to look at a finished barrel horse that was pretty expensive, she didn’t want it, too many “buttons to push and things to remember.” Callie seen this gelding in a stall and asked about him. The owner didn’t think he’d amount to much and so they weren’t asking much for him. Callie Jo wanted to give him a try and her parents thought they can learn together her own way. She took him home and she worked barrels and poles day and night, year around. The neighbors were always amazed at how much that girl was out in the bad weather on that horse. She trained him and he trained her. She had a big dream for that horse. Some would say he is too small or he does not have a fancy family history of winners, but Callie Jo did not care; always being a little stubborn she was going to make it happen. Bill was doing so well at turning barrels and poles at a
Page 20
Though Bill won’t grace the arena with his ribbons an sparkles, his memory lives on in Callie Jo. His legacy of ribbons and sparkles continues now through the many little girls inspired by the great horse and the girl that loved him. Rest in Peace, Paycos Bill.... deserve it.

Proceeds from the sale of Granada Farms’ Mr JB 0922 at the 2nd Annual JB Quarter Horses Creating Legends Barrel Horse Sale to benefit hippotherapy center R.O.C.K, Ride On Center for Kids (Refugio, Texas—October 21, 2010) Jimmy Eller of Granada Farms is generously donating the proceeds from the sale of the yearling gelding Mr JB 0922 to the hippotherapy center R.O.C.K., Ride On Center for Kids of Georgetown, Texas. The gelding will be the first horse in the ring at the 2nd Annual JB Quarter Horses Creating Legends Barrel Horse Prospect Sale scheduled for November 13 at the Extraco Center, formerly known as the Heart O’ Texas Fair Complex, in Waco, Texas. “R.O.C.K. does some wonderful things,” said Eller. “Mr JB 0922 is a really nice colt, and he’s going to make someone a nice horse. I’m hoping he sells well and brings them some nice money. I think he’ll benefit everyone involved with him.” R.O.C.K., a nonprofit provider of therapeutic horseback riding, offers a wide variety of hippotherapy programs from children with disabilities to soldiers injured in service to our country. Founded by Nancy Krenek, one of approximately 40 Hippotherapy Clinical Specialist in the nation, R.O.C.K. provides physical, speech and occupational therapy through its Hippotherapy, Therapeutic Sports Riding and R.O.C.K. The economy has made it very difficult on all non-profits. This is such a wonderful windfall for R.O.C.K.” Wilson said the proceeds would go to R.O.C.K.’s scholarship fund. With 180 students and 33 horses, financial needs are great. Students only pay 40 percent of the costs of their therapy, while the remaining 60 percent is covered through fundraising. Soldiers receive their therapy free. However, for students that are unable to pay the 40 percent, R.O.C.K. offers scholarships. “We don’t turn anyone away because of their inability to pay,” said Wilson. “We try to offer $30,000 in scholarships each year. This year has been very challenging. The funds raised from the sale of this beautiful horse will go directly into the scholarship fund. We can’t put into words how grateful we are to all involved.” MORE...... Located in Wheelock, Texas, Granada Farms was founded in 1984 by father and son, Jim and Jimmy Eller. On the Road Again.....
First of all....”Thank God for the rain!! The itching has subsided, finally! I am sure my people are glad that I am over that, I know I sure am. It was becoming almost as annoying as a the snores that now resonate from the little black bark box as she snoozes on the couch midday. (While no one else is able to enjoy what once was a peaceful nap time around here.) We have recently spent a lot of time on the road. Early in October we made an eight hour trip to Iowa. The whole family was able to go and attend the 2010 Midwest Match Barrel Race in Cedar Rapids. This included Miss Annabelle. She was in rare form, as usual. I was glad we didn’t know many people over there, she embarrassed me a few times barking at anything and everything that moved. She even tried to “attack” another dog. (If you can consider a lunge from a “brat”wurst on legs an attack.) And of course, your truly was left to baby-sit in the home on wheels. I wish they would have left me a thicker blanket....to muffle incessant shrill barks from the Princess at every passerby.
Page 30
Our trip was overall a success, everyone had a great time and from what I understand, our ladies team was voted the best dressed. (It was a good thing they weren’t picky about the white hairs I tend to leave on black jeans.) We also got to spend some time with wonderful friends at their home. (Thank you, Willards!) They even had some dogs that lived with them that entertained Annie, which gave me a nice break. Shortly after our trip to Iowa, we made the five hour drive to Lake Cumberland in Kentucky. This time it was a mini-vacation for me....no Annie!!!! I got some serious sleeping done, chased a few squirrels and enjoyed some peace and quiet. I didn’t get to ride the boat this time, boo! I really enjoy sitting up in the front, although I don’t care much for the contraption they put on me when I take a swim. Mostly it is a nice break from the ranch and the “outside dogs.” And this time it was a break from Princess Annabelle. I hated to come home. That’s about the extent of the excitement for me this month. I did have a reader send in a question about my writing methods that I thought it was worth answering. The reader wanted to know how it is that I can hold onto a pen or pencil to write my column (since I have paws and no fingers.) The answer is simple. I do not use a pen or pencil. I prefer to type. (My small paws fit nicely on the keys and the computer has spellcheck.) Until next month, enjoy some traveling with your family. As for me, I’ve had enough for a while....I’m gonna stay home and catch up on my napping.....if I could just get that incessant snoring to stop.

NATIONAL FINALS

RockNRolls to the Tune of
Wilmington,Ohio
Trevor Pruitt
T
he 2010 IBRA National Finals welcomed contestants to a beautiful new scene, at Roberts Arena, in Wilmington, OH. Nearly 1,500 entries ran the pattern in the Lamar Arena looking to get a piece of the $150,000+ in money and awards up for grabs. 16 Pro Rider Trophy Saddles, 16 Frontier Buckles, a plethora of Kent Logan accessories, and 80 Carrol Leather Jackets waited to outfit the week’s winners and champions.
TUESDAY – OCTOBER 5TH $2,500 Added Sponsors/Directors Race * 149 Entries
New and familiar faces constructed this years Sponsors/Directors race, with two very familiar Kentuckians taking the lead. Long time member Roger Bracken set an early, lasting lead at draw 36 with a 15.987. He would go unmatched until the 2009 Champion pair, Billy Hatzman and Jet Bars Faith, made their way through the gates posting a 15.769. It was the very next drag, however, that would run the 2010 Sponsors/Directors race champions. Karen Mostoller and JB Absolute crossed the FarmTek timer line with a scouring 15.615. Ashley Voyles, a WV sponsor took the top spot in the 2D aboard her trusty mount, SHF Tru Money Pit. The pair had taken multiple 1D/2D wins throughout the season giving them a Top Dog advantage for the coming week. Macie Davidson began what would be a very profitable week for the youth member winning the 3D on Dusty Easter Star. The team went on to collect three more checks throughout the week and Macie would pilot another mount, Gypsy Rose, to finish 3rd in the Youth Short Go three days later. The 4D win was taken by Gizmo and the horses jockey Skylar Cruse, a Michigan sponsor. Amber & Karen Mostoller shown with JB Absolute

$10,000 Guaranteed Division Winners: 2D Mellisa Kelly, 3D Sarah Boucher and 4D Jenna Leslie
Jamie Cagle and Dashin Live Rockette
$10,000 Guaranteed * 410 Entries
The first IBRA preferred class of the 2011 season, was an exciting one. 2011 points, 4 Wild Cards, and 4 Pro Rider Saddles were all up for grabs, not to mention a hefty pay check. The pace had already been set before the class started with Karen Mostoller’s 15.615 rolled over from the Sponsors/Directors race. Rass Pederson wouldn’t let that stay on the leader board long, clocking a smokin 15.505 only 50 horses in. It would be the always dangerous Jamie Cagle who would capture the classes win though. Cagle ran an eye opening 15.227 aboard Dashin Live Rockette. It was the same class the pair won at the IBRA Futurity and Preferred show in January. Dashin Live Rockette also took 6th place in the Guaranteed race at last years finals with Jamie’s husband, Jimmy in the drivers seat. The 2D win would be captured by Mellisa Kelly and Harry who scored the right time of a 15.736, 285 horses earlier. Cagle’s time sat Sarah Boucher right into a 3D Pro Rider saddle and a paycheck of $440. Jenna Leslie and Ribbon Ripper, ripped through the pattern with a near perfect 4-D time of 17.229 to claim a paycheck and new trophy saddle.
WEDNESDAY – OCTOBER 6TH 4-D, 1st Go Round * 498 entries
$30,000 Added Open
The show office opened at 7am and late entries were already at the window. Wednesday was the first day of the week for a chance at one of the largest 4-D payouts of the year. Among the late entries, was a well known force in the barrel racing world who everyone knew had the horse power to change the game and at the end of the class would. It was not a household name that would set the pace early though. Only 24 horses into the go round Cindy Robbins aboard Cashinthedeckofaces turned heads with a 15.289. The time led the round for over 4 hours of competition. Ed Henle and his distinguished mount SF Who Shot Doc would upset the pair when scorching the pattern with a 15.120. At draw 253, Chris Coffey approached the mouth of the arena allowing his Fort Smith winner, Toast to Val, a moment to look around. Everyone knew that they had a big history behind them and meant business. The pair left the arena as the new leaders with the timer board sporting the fastest time of the weekend thus far, 15.106. With no more than 35 horses left to run, it would be the late entered talent of Troy Crumrine and Hoosier Fame who would take home the top prize of $2541for the go round, which included $400 in members bonus money. The pair made a run that would leave just about anyone’s mouth open, exiting with a 15.024. Sliding in for the 2D win was another late entry, Brad Shirey aboard Critter. Crumrine’s time was the key for state qualifiers, Chris Hayes and WC Comment, which opened the door into the short go and led him to a 3D win. Two West Virginia teams tied for the 4D lead. Top Dogs, Casey White on RLS Dancing Girl, split the win with state qualifier Denese Saltis and Buggin Baja for a total of $924 plus an additional $176 in member bonus money.
Page 38
FUN NIGHT
As soon as the cheering for the leaders and money earners in Lamar Arena had silenced, laughter and whistles filled Bradley arena for the contestants of the womanless beauty contest. Pennsylvania’s Jarett “Sweetcheeks” Buchleitner and Michigan’s Dennis MacArthur had a pose off with cheers deciding the winner. The Michigan audience and Pennsylvania crowd made such a racket that a tie had to be called. The foot race was the next contest in the line up. There was hardly a contest for the Ohio team of Amber Mostoller and Natalie Davidson who won it by a mile.
Dog Race contestants prepare at the Starting Line.....
Preparation for the next race had the arena looking like a pound. Watching from the sidelines, the dog race was pretty amusing. Miniatures and toys were totted around, while some of the big dogs had their masters skiing through the dirt behind them just trying to hold on. Bailey, belonging to Chuck and Mendy Williams, demolished the small dog race, while Krystals Pratt’s, Kipper, out ran the big dogs. For a funny twist Kipper and Bailey had a run off and little Bailey made hast to the win. The balloon toss was a wet mess with kids of all ages partaking in the fun. The next event brought the fun and games to an end though, as it was no laughing matter for the returning tug-o-war champions from Indiana. Jamie White and his Tennessee team took no prisoners and make quick work out of all the teams who stepped up to other end of the rope, until the final match. “Wanna Forfeit?” Greg Shreeve, Indiana’s coach, asked the TN team. As Jamie and the boys got into position, a resounding “No” was the assumed answer. IndiWater Balloon Toss Excitement ana’s returning champs, Chad Bricker, Allen Smeltzer and AJ Coffee would not be taken down. Veins bulged, yells roared and Tennessee bodies fell, leaving Indiana as the 2 time back to back champs. A similar scene took place with the ladies pull. Sarah Klopfenstein, Emily Carr and Corrie Carr made up the Indiana team and they would also bring home the title for the second year in a row, taking down Michigan’s Stacy Orr, Michele Thatcher and Sally Kuiper.

THURSDAY- OCTOBER 7TH $30,000 Added Open 4-D, 2nd Go Round * 498 entries
Bradley arena, which served as the warm up pen during the finals, was busy bright and early with the second go of the open starting at 8 am Thursday morning. As the holding pen collected the first 5 to run, the stands had already filled because 5 of the top 10 from the 1st go were in the last 50 entries and the draw was reversed. Those who slept in missed Troy put down two more blazing runs that would hold 1st and 2nd for the majority of the day. Troy and Deuce, were 3rd in the gate and ended up second in the go round, running a 15.052. Hoosier Fame lost a half a step, slowing to a 15.134 placing 6th in the go round adding $779 to their previous days earnings. It was not out of reach for Katie Brown and Dealem Tiny, who ran the fastest time of the 2009 East National Finals, to bump troy to the number 2 spot, but she fell just six one thousandths short of the top spot, flying out with a 15.058. As in the 1st Go, it was not until the lights were about out until a new leader came in to brighten things up again. Draw number twelve Jimmy Cagle astride Dash D Hefe left the arena aghast clocking the new fastest time of the day and the weekend thus far with a 14.989. The new time moved Ashley Snedegar and Lady Dreamins, to the top of the 2D and a $1906 payday. Vonda Bowling rode Rene Runon Faith, to a two way tie with Jesse Wagner aboard his trusty mount Renes Rock for the 3D win. The teams split $1850 plus $350 in bonus money. WI top dogs, Jeanine Schira and BDR Lucky streak topped the 4th division.
Kody Mosby added his name to his families list of money earners for the week, winning the 2-D astride his Top Dog mount Gypsy Boy with a 15.737. Pennsylvania’s Colleen Hershey jockeyed Hobby’s Shootin The Moon to a 3D win and paycheck. A 17.220 was a fine place to be for Krista Feaser and Isle Be Seeing You, placing them at the top of the 4th division in the 1st go round.
FRIDAY – OCTOBER 8TH $2,500 Added Youth 4-D * Long Go * 204 Entries
$2,500 Added Masters 4-D * Long Go * 236
The IBRA National Finals youth class presented a chance for youth members to test themselves against some of the biggest names in not only youth barrel racing, but also open barrel racing across the states. With talent like Cheyanna Patrick, Jesse Wagner, Katie Brown, Ashley Snedegar, Nichole Love and Trevor Pruitt, just to name a few, the youth class was sure to make for a great show. Mary Francis Gorsuch piloted Smooth Stone to set the pace early, as draw 13 and fast with a 15.260. The pair ended up placing third in the youth short go, after Karissa Gipple aboard her stand out mount, VF Yo Down, ran a hot 15.240. It would be Nichole Love and her superb ride, Fifth of Jack, that would capture the first go round win and $664 for their efforts.

Back for their second win of the week, JB Absolute guided by IBRA founder and President, Karen Mostoller, won the 1st go of the masters by nearly two tenths on Friday. The pair added $703 to their winnings for the week. Mark Mosby would not allow Kody to be the only one to draw a check for the day, as he qualified MQH Slim Pickens for the master short go by winning the 2nd division. It would be wild card holder, Laurie Stevens and JR who took the 3D top spot. Bob Pavey aboard his state qualifier Tari wrapped up the Masters leader board, winning the 4th division and making his way to the short go. Barbeque, Corn Hole and Charity

Each year the IBRA National Finals supports a charity through various fundraising events. This year’s “Turnin For Hope” recipient is based in Wilmington, OH. Sugartree Ministry Center is staffed by volunteers from Southwestern Ohio. Sugartree Ministry was started to reach out to the sinner, the lonely, the hurting, the homeless, the addicted, the abused, and even to those who take advantage of the system. Fundraising activities for Sugertree included a Silent Auction table, Corn Hole tournament, canned good collections and more. Collectively, almost $3,300 was raised for the organization. A very special thanks is issued to Michele Dibert, PA director, who each year steps up to the plate and helps manage the charity events. In traditional fashion members threw together a delicious potluck dinner accompanied by fine BBQ from Smokey Pig BBQ LLC. Once the running was done in Lamar, a line formed halfway down the walls of Bradley Arena anxious for a plate. In conjunction with the BBQ, came the very popular Corn Hole tournament. With better than 20 teams entered it all came down to two that were undefeated. The tournament was a double elimination and best out of three. The finalist had to throw a total of eight consecutive games to decide this years corn hole champions. The final two teams would be Justin Hoover and Shane Cline against defending champions Shannon Roberts and Chris Coffey. The games were long and intense but the defending champs ended it remaining number one for their second consecutive year.
SATURDAY * OCTOBER 9TH Church Service
Church services have become a custom at all IBRA preferred shows. The turn out grows with each event and the seats in Roberts Hall were packed, with attendants lining the walls. The very popular and familiar Needhams lead the service and put on an outstanding performance. The crowd really got into the service this year with several requests

for prayer and offers of insight and hope. The IBRA would like to remind and welcome anyone who is in need of prayer to send an email to Karen@ibra. us, to have it posted in the Christian Corner of the IBRA website. IBRA would also like to encourage readers to check out the Christian Corner and keep those listed in your prayers.
Youth 4D Finals * 133
Draw 24 was experiencing his second IBRA National Finals this year and was facing a very familiar scene. History seems to have a way of repeating itself for Trevor Pruitt. Pruitt had scratched the first go as his Wild Card entry guaranteed him a place in the short go, just as he had done last year. He and Walts Rockin Roll came strolling through the gate attempting to better their placing from last years Reserve Champion. The team set the time to beat early leaving Pruitt with ample time to set on pins and needles as there were numerous youth riders with the horse power to change things. With only 27 horses left to run it would be draw 106, Nicole Love driving Fifth of Jack, to earn the 2010 Youth Championship and place Pruitt, for the second year in a row, as Reserve Champion. The Top Dogs proved that they deserved there spot in the Finals as all four divisions were won by Top Dogs. Each youth division winner received their share of prize money plus a Pro Rider trophy saddle and Carrol Leather IBRA National Finals Jacket.

Maryland Top Dog pair, Jessica Green and Bayou Pledge ran a 15.598 to win the 2D Championship. West Virginia’s Autumn Bailey and her steady mount, Levis Enternal Reed, was crowned 3D Champions. The difference between 4D Champion and Reserve Champion was a mere six thousandths of a second. Shelby Grosberger and Classy of PA just barely out ran KY Top Dogs Emily Drury and Rocky to capture the title.
Masters 4-D Finals* 159 Entries
Jeff Keeney wouldn’t settle for a second, second place. At draw 15 he had Steakin USA running wide open besting his prior masters performance by nearly a full tenth, with a 15.256. His early lead would hold for the remaining 145 entries, erecting a new 2011 Masters Champion. Billy put Dave Shockey in the 2D lead with a near perfect time of 15.657. A devoted supporter of the IBRA who rarely misses a preferred show, Rhonda Flatter topped the 3D to be crowned its Champion along with the solid Leo Skylark. After months of struggling with soundness issues, New Jersey director Anjel Turi and the dependable Tuscarora gave the 4D a run for its money leading the division right up to draw 151. With only eight contestants left MI member Don Benish swooped in to take the 4D Championship aboard Ranger.
Open 4-D Finals * 294 Entries
Now ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the main event. The following is the rundown to crown the 2010 IBRA National Finals Champion. The stands in Roberts Arena were packed and filled with anticipation Saturday, with eyes watching the timer to see if early draw’s, Cheyanna Patrick and Hays Victory Eye, 15.038 would be topped. The time held the leader board for 231 entries until draw 257 fired from the gate. The team may have come up a little short in the short go of the Youth, earlier that day, but when it came to the big daddy of the weekend, Trevor Pruitt and Walts Rockin Roll came in rockin and a strollin. The pair changed the tune of the event to the sound of a 14.808, becoming a new leader and setting the fastest time of the weekend. On a parade of recent wins, Pruitt had just made the top 20 under 20 in an article by Barrel Horse News and had gotten a chance to work on his auto-
Page 41
graphing skills for the IBRA office staff not 50 horses earlier. He increased his earnings by $3148 with the run and added the IBRA National Champion title to his reign. He and Walter (as the gelding is affectionately known) were awaited by an on edge crowd and not a mouth was silent as they rounded the third barrel. The time line was broke answering the prayers of several contestants who were hoping Trevor could reseat them from no mans land into a paycheck. Karen Mostoller went from no check in the short go, to being equipped with a new 2D trophy saddle, $2361 and the 2D Champion crown. Open Range’s second highest point earners in the 1D, and points leader in the 2D, Brain Carman and his reliable gelding, Jedi Jones became the 3D National Finals Champions raking in $1,574, a Pro Rider trophy saddle and a National Finals Jacket. Mary Green cashed in on her week long efforts with a 16.813. Mary and Cash a Secret wont be able to keep secret the $787 she won as she rides around in her 4D champion saddle. The IBRA issued a number of “thank yous” to long to list. Included are special thanks to all the staff, barrel setters, returning announcer Matt Joseph, timer Kathy Maxwell, Tommy Lynch for safe footing and all who made the show possible. Thanks to Roberts Arena and its very pleasant staff. Most importantly the IBRA would like to thank the contestants who make the show a success.

Mystery of the Month.... T
his month we return to the racetrack. Can you identify the Mystery Cowboys in this win photo? How about the name of the horse and the year? This mare went on to win the Indiana Quarter Horse Futurity. Her stablemate would wran third. The photo was taken at Wabash Valley Downs - as you can see by the sign. Tell us the correct identity of these cowboys and the horse and win your choice of a one year subscription to The Horse Resource or a “Horsey-T!” Send us in your pictures from years past of a cowboy or cowgirl that someone else may be able to identify to win a Free subscription or “Horsey T.”
And...KEEP those pictures coming!!! I’m running very low on the mystery pictures......and we don’t want to run out of fun. Whose picture would you love to see in here? Mail it in to us! We’ll return any originals that are sent regular mail....or email them to us at thehorseresource@ msn.com. Good Luck!
We-Don’t- Have A Winner! Last month’s Mystery of the Month had not been solved as of press time....so we now have two prizes up for grabs! October’s Mystery included a picture from a Midwest Match race. States from across the Midwest have been sending teams of barrel racers to compete against each other for the title of Match Champion and possession of the Match Race trophy for well over 30 years now. Our Mystery of the Month revolved around a Match Race from years past. These three young ladies were preparing to compete during what year’s race? Where was this race held? Who are these young ladies? and their horses? and where were they from? If you have a picture of a Cowgirl or Cowboy that you would like to see featured as our Mystery of the Month then send it via email to us at thehorseresource@msn.com or mail it to us at 12601 S. CR 200 W., Muncie, IN 47302. (ALL originals will be returned.)
