A Little “Barrel Talk”
More great suggestions and recipes found on Barrel Horse World’s Barrel Talk.....Enjoy! (Just remember - The Horse Resource is not endorsing these “remedies.” We recommend that you consult your veterinarian before using any home remedy on your horse.)
supersenior Posted 2011-07-09 2:07 AM Tent Hoarder Posts: 1734 Location: One of Yesterday’s Liabilities ~ Oklahoma Outback Make your own waxed thread/speedy stitcher string.... in the fabric notions dept (Walmart of course) they sell a sml round plastic box of beeswax....it has slots to run your thread or string thru to coat with the bwax... take the string from your feed sack tops and draw it thru the slots multiple times, then roll up the newly waxed string on a spool or old pill bottle... It is STRONG and will not rot.... bambigirl Posted 2011-07-10 1:38 PM Member Posts: 8 I have a older mare who is very sentitive to flies....I feed her a supplement with garlic in it & this year I am using Spalding fly predator, which has helped the flies over all. She is on an acre of pasture and when in her pen I keep it clean. The problem is the few flies around go right to her front legs and make them bleed and swell up :( Does anyone have a home remedy like maybe a paste I can put on her legs to keep the bitten flies away!! goin4broke Posted 2011-07-10 5:36 PM Forever Young at Heart Posts: 2280 Location: Way down yonder in the indian nation~Oklahoma I don’t know if this will help on her front legs or not, but I KNOW that it helps with the midline... maybe it will help your mare too!!! 1- 20 ounce bottle Aloe Vera Gel (I use generic) 1 -12 ounce bottle of EXTRA THICK hand lotion (any cheap kind will work, thicker the better) OR 1 large tube of Corona salve (lotion is cheaper and works just as good) 4 ounces of Hydrocortizone CREAM 4 ounces of triple antibiotic CREAM 1 ounce of oil of citronella (ask for this at the pharmacy, if you cannot get it, you can use 2T of Skin so soft bath oil)
Mix this stuff all together and put back in one of the large bottles (if you get one with a pump on it, all the better) slather this on the effected areas twice a day... the flys tend to pick on skin that is extra dry, because dry skin is easier pickin’s to them... if you keep this on the parts that are oozing, leaving a thick scum over it, it will help heal whats there, and prevent more bites from happening. I have a horse that is also extremly allergic to fly bites and mosquito saliva. His midline was raw most of the time from so much torture from the bugs... I’ve been using this all summer and he is good to go... still not much hair regrowth, but he’s not raw and oozing either. I sure hope this will help your mare!!! Neros Winning Chick Posted 2011-09-08 10:36 PM Extreme Veteran Posts: 549 Location: MN For dry cracked hooves mix equal parts pine tar, turpentine and linseed oil. Brush on 2-3 times a week...making sure to brush it well into the hairline. LQELNTD Posted 2011-09-09 11:14 AM Location: Texas RE:canrunner - 2011-06-29 10:37 PM OK I have been reading thru this and does anyone have a good home remedy for rope or string burns on the back of the front foot. we just thought we had all the hay strings picked up and still haven’t found it. I have been spraying his foot down really well 2X a day and pitting pink crud on it but it just isnt healing as quick as I know it can. I know for people, hemeroid (spelling?) ointment works to take the burn/soreness out.... H20girl Posted 2011-09-14 9:36 AM Elite Veteran Posts: 925 I like to use wd-40 on the feet to tuffen them up, just spray on the bottom before you ride, I dont use it all the time, but
have had good luck, also us wd for cockaburs, takes them out of tails without pulling alot of hair out, sakota84 Posted 2011-09-17 9:05 AM Member Posts: 11 Location: Missouri Home Remedy for deep cuts that are difficult to apply stiches in: I have seen and personally used this many times and have recommended it to many of my friends and seen it work on their horses as well. 1. 8oz Vaseline (or cheaper kind) - Keeps the wound free of dirt and moisture while it heals. 2. 8oz Honey 3. 8oz Adolf’s Meat Tenderizer (eliminates proud flesh and keeps it from forming) 4. 8oz Cod Liver Oil (found in the baking/spices isle) Stir all these together and use gloves. The cod liver oil will stick in your skin for a while if you are not careful. Clean wound good with cool water and apply using a soft bristle paint brush. Apply every day for five days. Do not wash once applied. After 5 days rinse out and start the process over. Do not wrap! The wound will start to heal from the inside out and leave no scar and no white hairs. I had a red roan mare that got ran into a fence. She had sliced her leg from her hock down into her hoof all the way around. It was a flab of skin just hanging on. I wrapped that one piece for a small while to give it a chance to reconnect. Applied this everyday. Never once saw a vet and she healed with a single scar! Can’t even tell the incident had occured. It smells horrid, but it really does work and recommend it to anyone with a nasty cut. I have also heard that WD-40 works wonders if sprayed on sore muscles. Haven’t tried it yet!

The Story of a Tough Cowboy and an Even Tougher Little Boy Top Barrel Racing Sire Frenchmans Guy Cloned FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE September 13, 2011 Written by Chelsea Tanner, Contact: Myers Training Stables Fort Worth, Texas -- Legendary sire of barrel racing and performance
horses, Frenchmans Guy, owned by Myers Training Stables in St. Onge, S.D., has been reproduced by the cloning company ViaGen. Bill and Deb Myers announced today that three Frenchmans Guy cloned foals were born in a ViaGen facility in June of this year. The exceptional conformation, proven pedigree and impressive statistics of Frenchmans Guy as both a sire and competitor were all factors contributing to the decision to clone the 25-year-old stallion. Listed as a leading all-around performance sire for the past decade by Equi-Stat, the statistical division of Cowboy Publishing Group, Frenchmans Guy has progeny earnings in excess of $4 Million. As genetic replicas, the clones will allow the champion sire’s exact genes to continue. The Myers family hired ViaGen, the Austin, Texasbased world leader in animal cloning, to produce these three outstanding foals. “After long thought and consideration as well as extensive research, we have decided that keeping Frenchmans Guy’s genetics alive into the future would be the right thing to do both for our breeding program as well as the horse industry as a whole. Knowing the prepotency of Frenchmans Guy and finding through our research and our consultation with Blake Russell of ViaGen that these foals would in fact produce exactly like their sire was the deciding factor in our final decision,” said Bill and Deb Myers in a joint statement. “Seeing these foals in person has validated our decision and we are extremely happy and excited for their future,” they added. “It is a true pleasure to work with such a legendary stallion owned by a great family,” said Blake Russell, CEO of ViaGen, Inc. “Frenchmans Guy is a proven, elite stallion and now through advanced reproduction his genetics can continue making a positive impact for many years to come.” Cloning produces a later-born identical genetic replica, thereby preserving and multiplying the genetics of superior animals. Many horse breeders, who already use assisted reproductive techniques such as in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer, view cloning as the next step in breeding. Horse breeders increasingly recognize that cloning is an excellent tool for maximizing the value of their best genetics. Myers Training Stables is located in picturesque St. Onge, S.D. Bill and Deb Myers produce their semi-annual Myers Performance Horse Prospect Sale in Spearfish, S.D., where they feature select prospects.

By: Tammie Hiatt from www.iprarodeo.com There is a young man named Eli Horn from Ames, Iowa and even though he is only 7 years old and small in stature, he makes a giant impression on everyone he meets. At the age of 3, Eli was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a genetic childhood cancer. Eli was initially given only three to six months to live, but at age 7, he is still fighting his and holding his own in the battle. Eli’s grandparents, Bill and Janice Jenson, have been allsession ticket holders at the IFR for 21 years. “We are huge rodeo fans. We started coming to the IFR in the early ‘90’s. We Photo Courtesy of Saved by Grace Photography followed Dennis Morris’ bull riding career and remember watching Granny Morris cheering from the stands when Dennis would ride,” said Janice. “We watched him win his world titles.” “Our seats at the IFR are on the front row just right of the bucking chutes,” she explained. “When Dennis was picking up last year, he would sit on his horse and talk to us in between rides. Eli went with us to the finals last year and he got to meet Dennis and they just took to each other. Before the end of the IFR, Dennis and Jesse Guillory had Eli in the truck while the barrels were being set up throwing out stuff with the Hooter Girls. Eli was also made an honorary member of the IPRA, he is now a huge rodeo fan!” “Dennis invited us to come to his rodeo in July, so we packed up Eli and headed to Springfield, TN,” said Janice. “The town was so generous to us, the Hampton Inn compted a room for us for two nights near the pool so Eli could swim and there were toys on the bed for him.” “Having Eli come to Springfield’s rodeo was the best thing I’d ever done,” said Dennis Morris of Rafter M Rodeo Company. “The whole community loved Eli. He has an effect on everyone he meets. He’s an awfully tough little boy, he’s been through so much, and it was great to see him having such a good time.” “We had a young bull we took to the rodeo and he has been named “Eli Horn,” said Dennis. “Friday night at the rodeo we had the biggest crowd we have ever had. Saturday night it rained before the performance. Normally, I would have went back to the trailer and cried because the
News crowd was going to be bad, but I thought, we’ll have this rodeo next year, but this rodeo this year is all about Eli!” “It humbled me to know what his family is going through,” said Morris. “Saturday night in our opening we had three Special Forces soldiers from Ft. Campbell in our opening and Eli walked in front of them in the arena, he kept looking over his shoulder so he could be sure and salute at the same time they did. It was awesome.” “Eli has a little brother, Isaiah, who will be 4 in September,” said Janice. “Isaiah lived the first 2 years of his life in a Ronald McDonald house while Eli underwent treatment. “When Eli was first diagnosed he was taken to the University of Iowa. His scans showed a huge tumor that was wrapped around several organs, and it was stage four.” “Aaron and Lacy took him to Sloan-Kettering, a research hospital in New York. He underwent an 11-hour surgery and they removed everything they could see. The cancer was in his bones and all through his body. He was started on an experimental treatment.” said Janice. “For the last 2 years we have been getting NED (no evident disease) reports from his scans. Eli and his dad fly to New York every 3 months for repeat scans and a bone marrow test. His last scan showed some changes and they are saying it is leukemia. He may have to have a stem cell transplant,” Janice said. “We have seen him go through so much,” she said. “Everyday we do something to make him happy. That’s why we took him to Dennis’ rodeo. We were so glad he was feeling really good, the heat didn’t bother him too bad and he ate like a horse while we were there. Sometimes he’ll go 2 or 3 days without eating.”
Janice said she had a story from IFR41 she wanted to share, “Dennis asked Eli what his favorite rodeo event was and he replied, “team roping”. Dennis said to him, “you’ve got to be kidding me, you’re telling a bull rider, you like team roping!” The champion team ropers liked it though, and gave Eli the ropes and gloves they’d used at the finals.” Eli’s take on it all is simply this, “I never thought I’d have a cowboy as a best friend.”
Miss Rodeo Illinois: Brooke Owen By: Emma Lee - compliments of www.barrelhorseworldnews.com A government can shut down a rodeo, but it cannot tell the people to quit roping and riding, and it didn’t stop one 19-yearold rodeo queen from representing the sport she so dearly loves. When Illinois Governor Pat Quinn put a halt on the National High School Finals Rodeo (NHSFR) in Springfield, Ill., the state’s rodeo-goers and participants erupted in protest. For Miss Rodeo Illinois, Brooke Owen, the governor’s veto was a major blow to the sport she loves so much. “It’s really put a damper on [rodeo],” Owen said. “Illinois is supposed to host it. The same states each year host it.”

Illinois, Wyoming and New Mexico typically share the hosting responsibilities during alternate years. Springfield, Ill. was scheduled to hold the NHSFR this year, that is, until Gov. Quinn allowed the state’s department of agriculture to discontinue state funds for the event. “It’s certainly not a reflection on the rodeo’s merit,” Illinois Agriculture Spokesman Jeff Squibb said to the Associated Press on Jan. 27, 2011. “It’s simply a reflection of the state’s fiscal situation.” “It’s really hitting home with our state not having money,” Owen said. “Not being able to put on rodeos … it’s upset a lot of people.” The cost of the NHSFR to the state is approximately $1 million, whereas the profits are estimated to hover around $8 million for locals of Springfield and the smaller towns surrounding it. “Without high school rodeo and without junior rodeo and without bring people to the state … people won’t know it even exists in the state,” Owen said. One of Owen’s primary roles as Miss Rodeo Illinois is to represent
Page 12
News the sport of rodeo in her state. With the government shutting down events because of reportedly tough economic situations, many fear the sport will dwindle in the Prairie State.

“Illinois does rodeo,” Owen said.
“I like the competition, all my friends do it, it’s like a little community, or family,” Owen said. She was the first runner up in two Miss Junior Rodeo contests. After high school, she re-entered the pageant world only to conquer the statewide contest for the highest title in Illinois. Owen said the best part of being Miss Rodeo Illinois is being able “to really explain things and let people know and to let people be aware of all the horsemanship that goes into rodeo.” She said sharing her favorite sport with kids and their families is what truly makes her job enjoyable.

It is a simply statement, but one Owen will not recant. A native of Mapleton, Ill, Owen has barrel raced “since she was born” and been in rodeo since the third grade.

“It is so wonderful to be able to have people that you can really talk to about what you’re going through, like being gone all the time, and they actually get it too,” Owen said. “… I feel like I have 30 older sisters to go to for things.”

“You just have to remember that there’s a little kid out there, there’s someone that wants to be in your shoes and isn’t,” Owen said. “To respect people that put you there, your family, and to really not take it for granted.” No governor or government department will tell Brooke Owen whether she’ll promote rodeo in her state or not; she’s committed to fighting for the sport throughout her reign as Miss Rodeo Illinois. “In reality, we only get to do this for one year,” Owen said. “It’s really a dream come true.”

Chilled Six Pack Takes Gordon Mobley Futurity
Photos by Linscott Photography
Story by Tammy Knox
Chilled Six Pack Takes Gordon Mobley Futurity It was a dream trip from start to finish for Chilled Six Pack and rider Shanley Jackson. The duo took home the trophy in the $100,000 Gordon Mobley Futurity Final Saturday, Sept. 17 at Hoosier Park Racing & Casino. Starting from post two in the 10-horse lineup, Chilled Six Pack broke from the gate sharply and immediately put his opponents at an advantage, grabbing the top spot on the inside. Jackson kept the two-year-old gelding on task all the way through the 350 yard dash and beat the field to the wire by one and one-half lengths in a time of :17.824 seconds. Stablemate Corona Kas and Victor Olivo rallied up in the final strides for second, one-half length ahead of Highway To Payoff and Aron Hunt for third. “He (Chilled Six Pack) was a little nervous before we got in the gate, but once the gate opened, he took off,” said Jackson. “I smooched to him one time and he responded and dug in all the way to the finish line.” Owned by Vickie and Raymond Duke, Chilled Six Pack is now two for two in his brief career, also winning his trial of the Mobley Futurity. The son Chilled Corona now has in excess of $66,000 in earnings for trainer John McCreary, who saddled both Chilled Six Pack and Corona Kas for the event. McCreary is currently tied for second in the leading Quarter Horse trainer standings with five wins this season. “It’s an awesome feeling to win this stake today,” said McCreary. “I’d just like to thank all the owners for giving me the confidence to get here. I’ve also had some good jockeys that have tried their hardest for me. It’s been a great year.” Attending the race for the trophy presentation was Gordon Mobley, a long-time supporter of Quarter Horse racing in the state of Indiana. Mobley was joined by all the connections of Chilled Six Pack for the second running of the event. For Jackson, the win in the Mobley Futurity is his third $100,000 stakes win this year. The North Carolina native has been battling back and forth with two-time leading rider Harold Collins for the top spot this season. Jackson has seven wins through the first 19 days of Quarter Horse action this season. Jackson finished second in the standings last year and after three years of competition at Hoosier Park, he is already among the top 10 riders all time in the Quarter Horse ranks.

Finals Set for Sterlie Bertram and Hoosier Park Classic Photos by ShelleyŠ
$100,000 final, connecting with Chilled Six Pack in the Gordon Mobley Final Saturday, Sept. 17. Lovemelikethat will try to match her stablemate in the upcoming Bertram Final, which will be one of two $100,000 stakes on a day set aside for all Quarter Horse racing. Other Trial winners to advance to the Bertram Finals are Bitter Sweet Song (Rodney Prescott) and Katinizer (Juan Delgado).
Two divisions of trials competed for the ten spots to fill the $100,000 Hoosier Park Classic which will also be ran on Quarter Horse Day, October 8th. Eyes Got Hope, guided by Harold Collins, won the last of two Lovemelikethat trials by 1-1/2 lengths over Burrs Tictac (Shanley Jackson) to post the top qualifying time of 20.094 for the 400 yard dash. Eyes Got Hope is owned and trained by Finals Set for Sterlie Bertram Gene Cox and bred by Circle S Ranch, Inc. The first of the two trials and Hoosier Park Classic was won by Brimmerton Lane with Victor Olivo aboard. Brimmerton Lane is owned by Fransisco Ramos and trained by Raul Gonzalez. Three divisions of trials were held Friday, Sept. 23 to determine the final field for the $100,000 Sterlie Bertram Memorial Final set for Quarter Horse Day Saturday, Oct. 8. Of the three trials, Lovemelikethat and Julie Veltman were the quickest to the wire, winning their event in a time of :17.717 seconds. It appeared to be an easy task for Lovemelikethat, who began her journey from post seven. She left the gate alertly and in control of the race early, putting her opponents at her heels and charging under the wire two lengths ahead of the rest of the field. Stole N Loot and Aron Hunt rallied home second followed by Class Of Oh Eight and rider Shanley Jackson.

Dear Barrel Racers,
This month there will be over 500 horses saddled up in Wilmington, OH to run at their share of the $40,000 added. Last year we had a total of 1497 entries at the finals. We want to thank you all in advance for another great show as pre-entries indicate that the 2011 Finals are going to do just as well. To all you members who couldn’t make it, for whatever reason, you are missed. We wish you all luck this season in becoming a State Qualifier and/or Top Dog. To all of you nonmembers, we would love the opportunity to show you what our association is about. We are a Christian organization that strives to maintain a family friendly atmosphere at all of our shows and the National Finals. Now that we have a year under our belt at Roberts Arena we are looking to have an even smoother show than last year, which ran fifty plus horses per hour. Please be sure and watch your family and friends run on our live webcast, hosted by Barrel Horse World. There are lots of fun things going on at this year’s final. Any contestant who places in the top 5 of any division wearing IBRA attire will win their pick of any IBRA top of equal value! Cowgirl Tuff and B Tuff will also be sponsoring lucky drags. If a contestant happens to run in a lucky drag while wearing a Cowgirl Tuff/B Tuff top or bottom they will win an article of equal value. Of course there are all the usual fun things going on. The BBQ, The Corn Hole Tournament and Fun Night featuring a balloon Toss, Dog Race, Foot Race, Womanless Beauty contest and Tug-O-War are always entertaining. We have put a lot of time and effort into this year’s finals to hopefully make it as enjoyable as ever. Roberts Arena has really stepped up to the plate making valiant efforts to improve the facility for our finals. We would like to extend a big thank you to Jenny Riddle and all of the fine staff at Roberts Arena, as there is a lot of work in preparing for a show of this size.
of the association. I am very excited to take on the responsibility that this position requires and am looking forward to serving our members as best I can. I feel truly blessed to have such an opportunity and welcome any suggestions as to how we can make things better for our members. I am very familiar with the amount of work this position entails. I feel as though Karen has helped me prepare for this over the past 3 years. The work she has put forth over the last twelve years has paved the way allowing me to drive a much smoother path. Having said that, as a long time member myself, I would like to personally thank Karen for starting such a fine association. IBRA is an association that I am proud to be a member of and proud to lead into the future. There are great things for us to look forward to. While maintaining the Christian environment that Karen has sought to establish, we hope to implement new ideas to help each state’s awards program and show selection become better each year. In closing, I know I speak on behalf of all our staff, directors and reps in thanking all of our members for their continued support and welcoming all non-members to give us a try. From you weekend warriors to the seasoned professional, you (the Barrel Racers) are what this is all about and we look forward to helping the sport of Barrel Racing grow. Wishing you all safe, fun rides through God’s blessing, Shane Cline IBRA President

State News INDIANA
Update from IN State Director Linda Stapleton: Indiana IBRA - lots of family fun! I was asked by the IBRA to write a article about Indiana this year. What came to thought was all the families who are members of the Indiana IBRA. We are privileged to have lots of neat families who are enjoying all the Indiana IBRA shows that are now available in Indiana. While looking around at a recent show I saw the Cunningham girls, Angie, Jessie, and Kayla. If you haven’t had the privilege of running against this trio of very competitive, intelligent young women, you are missing a great experience. Between them they have won over 25 saddles and you’ll always see one of them at the pay window. We are truly blessed to have them as a part of our IBRA family. Another great competitive family that I also noticed at this show were the Harlans, Carl, Cindy, & Ashley. While Carl is a busy farmer that doesn’t get to every show, when he does show up he is a driving force in the competition. Cindy and Ashley are a great mother/daughter team who show our organization that sportsmanship and competition are great qualities in our barrel racing members. I had the privilege of watching Ashley win a saddle in 2008 at our annual Cloverdale Ultimate Challenge awards show and Cindy has been a driving force in our 1D top five for the last several years. This fact reminded me that members don’t just come and go, they remain in the IBRA. That day at that particular show, as soon as I got my horse set up in her stall, I noticed I was privileged to be stalled next to Jason, Michelle,
Whitney and Olivia Sarber. This young competitive family are recent members to our organization and are we privileged to have them. This busy family has been truly amazing to watch compete this year and their positive helpful attitude has made them very respected among our membership. And, not to leave out a dynamic father/daughter team combo of Greg and Jessica Shreeve. On a side note, just to let everyone know, Jessica recently won a saddle series that was running in several shows produced by Chad and Kelly Bricker this summer. I guess if you would ask me what I see when I look around at the IBRA shows, it would be great competitors at every age. All of our members, families or singles help make up our great organization. Since our year runs from August 1 to July 31st there is plenty of time to join our family. Hope to see you around at one of the many IBRA shows offered in Indiana. Linda
KENTUCKY C&A Productions Hosts Kentucky IBRA State Finals in Liberty KY’s Central KY Ag and Expo Center August 26th-28th. The 3 day IBRA Supershow capped off a fantastic year of Barrel Racing for 2011. C&A hosted the 1st ever KY Top Dog Shoot Out. Every member in top five in each division of Open, Youth and Masters coming into Friday night ran against the other four in their respective division for all the cash. This was a really good and competitive barrel race and it spotlighted the members who worked hard during the season to be in the top five. Starting with the Youth, Emily Drury and Rocky took home the winner’s purse in the 3D. The 2D Youth was won by

IBRA NEWS Brooklynn Poteet and Taylor Turner captured the 1D on superhorse Bernie. Masters Division 3D winner was Joe Dirolf and Colonel, 2D Champion was Kelly Clark on the famous horse, Sam, and the 1D Champ was John Perkins riding the Horse with a name that matches his run, PayDay Meyers. The Open $2000 added barrel race finished out the evening Friday night with Kentucky cowboy, Chris Coffey, (who’s name was heard quite often during the weekend) and national acclaimed super horse, A Bit of Gold Dust, who stopped the clock with a 15.698 to take home the top prize. Seven has became a topic of laughter from all points of view, but none get as many laughs as the donkey himself. But I can assure you that most of the time, I just don’t get it. Honestly, I think Seven just has a twisted sense of humor. Most of the things he laughs about are “incidents” created by the little pot stirring donkey himself.

Seriously?? You think that’s funny? Life is NEVER dull - or quiet - around here at the ranch. Sometimes I think that I get more rest when we are on the road somewhere at a horse show or rodeo. I can guarantee you that a quiet day around here is very hard to come by. A classic example of a “typical day” here at the ranch could include an unlimited supply of cars and trucks pulling in and out of the driveway, these will almost always get a few barks from the outside dogs, probably a few from your truly and definitely a barking remix from the Princess. The vehicle induced barking is just the tip of the decible iceberg. When the people take us (me and Annie) outside to feed the horses first thing in the morning, our visit includes a “Good Morning” nicker from most every horse on the property. Our visit to the barn also gets the standard laugh from the ranch’s latest animal authority on obnoxiousness, Seven the donkey. He would most likely outdo the “little black bark box” in my book if I had to bring him in the house too. He laughs at everything! Of course, he has the most annoying and loud laugh I have ever heard. Heeeeee Haw Haw Haw Haw....Heeeeeeeee Haw Haw Haw. I mean, come on.....really? Who laughs like that?
He has created quite a name among the visitors here at the ranch. (I think “Court Jester” would be a fitting.) His antics have already included several escapes, chasing dogs and cars (yes, I said it) and aggravating horses every chance he gets. He likes to pull on the horses’ tails, he doesn’t chew on them....just grabs them with his mouth and then pulls. Some of the horses don’t get his “jokes” either....and they usually let him know right away that he isn’t as funny as he thinks. Some just tolerate him....I call them his enablers! As for me, I refuse to encourage his ridiculous behavior. He is just a prank playing, loud laughing, ego-maniac who likes to be the center of attention. What’s so funny about that? Until next month.... Keep it down.......

Spotlight on our Charity Show O
ur charity show includes classes for a variety of disciplines and breeds. We want as many people as possible to have a chance to participate in a charity effort that brings back tangible benefits to the local and statewide communities. We encourage people to come watch our activities and learn about our equine community.
Hunter/Jumper, 3 Arenas,
Horses jump individually over 8-10 obstacles in a specific pattern. For Hunter classes, horses are judged on form and must jump roundly with their front legs tucked towards their nose. For Jumper classes, horses must jump a series of obstacles without incurring “faults”. Faults are knockdowns or hits of the obstacles, refusals to jump, or time penalties for not completing a course in the allotted time. In Equitation classes, the rider must demonstrate correct position in the saddle and present a workmanlike and confident picture to observers. For more info: www.ushja.org
Open Western Show, Baker Arena,
Horses are evaluated on manners and suitability for a relaxed but collected gait, cadence and a calm and responsive disposition. Classes include pleasure, trail, and halter.
Driving, Roads and Cross Country,
Driving competitions are open to any breed or type of horse. They may be driven alone or in groups, or teams, of up to four. They have three phases—dressage, marathon, and cones. They accrue penalties for poor form, hitting obstacles, time faults, and other criteria. The lowest total of cumulative penalties from all three phases determines the winner. For more info: www.americandrivingsociety.org
Speed Show, Baker Arena,
Originally a rodeo event, these contests are popular at a variety of venues throughout the U.S.. For this show, there will be barrel and pole bending competitions. For barrels, horses and riders run as fast as they

can in a clover-leaf pattern around the barrels, trying not to tip them over. For pole bending, riders weave through a series of poles, “bending” their horses through the pattern as quickly as possible without knocking any poles over. For both of these classes, the fastest time wins.
Open English Show, Baker Arena,
Open to a variety of breeds, the English horse may be shown in either Hunt Seat, Saddle Seat, or Side Saddle tack. Horses perform as a group and are shown at gaits appropriate to their breed. Horses are judged on manners and performance.
Dressage, Dressage Arenas,
Dressage is a French term meaning “training”, and is often described as “horse ballet”. Movements are performed at different levels depending on the level of training a horse has. They may complete a passage (a slow motion trot), a piaffe (a trot in place), one and two-tempi changes (a Skip as the horse changes leads in the canter), or a pirouette. Horses are evaluated on the quality of their gaits and the exercises they execute. For more info: www.usdf.org , www.indianadressage.org , www.harmonyintheparkdressageshow.com
Combined Training, Dressage and Stadium Arenas
This show involves horses working both “on the flat” (no jumps) and over fences. Horses complete their dressage phase and then proceed to jumping phases both in the stadium and over cross country fences.

EQUINE HOOF BALANCING

alance s e e m s to be a common theme in most health related issues. The entire medical theory of Chinese acupuncture is based on the body’s Chi or energy being in balance. Another facet of medicine that is not often thought of in medical terms is the foot and it is very important for the foot to Photo showing heels that have not been filed equally be in balance. back to the widest part of the frog. Filing the heels back Just like a house to the widest part of the frog is of major importance if the needs a strong goal is to not have under run heels. and balanced foundation, a horse needs a strong and balanced foot. Some of the fastest and most talented horses in the world cannot perform to the best of their ability because for some reason their feet are out of balance. They may have the long toe under run heel syndrome which is the most common result of an out of balance foot or the foot may be unbalanced from medial to lateral. Either way, an out of balance foot will someday be an unhealthy and painful foot. It is easy to become confused on what is a balanced “normal” foot or an unbalanced “abnormal” foot. There are probably more abnormal feet out there versus normal healthy feet so it is easy to start thinking that since abnormal may be average that it is also normal. Veterinary medicine has a tool that can be used to help farriers and veterinarians work together to give your horse a better balanced foot. It is called “ Hoof Balancing “. Whether your goal is to have your horse’s joints stay healthy as long as possible or it is to balance a horse’s feet with visible problems, hoof balancing can help your horse. Hoof balancing is really nothing more than making sure the joints and structures that make up the hoof are in proper alignment and balance. To achieve maximum benefit, it requires the blended skills of your farrier and equine veterinarian. A horse’s legs are comparable to the tires on your car. If the tires are out of balance, one side will wear out before the other and instead of getting 40,000 miles out of your tires you will get 30,000. With hoof balancing digital x-rays are taken of the foot, pastern, and fetlock. The x-rays are put with a program that allows the veterinarian and farrier to visualize what you cannot always detect with the naked eye. The hoof balancing program can measure precisely the angles between the coffin, pastern, and fetlock joints. These measurements check for front to rear or anterior/posterior balance. If any of these joints are out of balance with the other, the degree of change that needs to be made is measured. Side to side or medial/lateral balance is also visualized and precisely
Page 36
measured. If there is a medial/lateral imbalance your horse’s joints just like a car’s tires will wear out faster. Hoof balancing will help decrease the amount of joint injection treatments that a horse needs because with his joints in balance they have less reason to become inflamed. The inflammation in a joint is many times secondary to a joint wearing unevenly. There have been horses that were constantly having their coffin joints injected with medications to keep them sound. The horses normally respond well to the injections but a few months months later the lameness shows up again. If the reason for the lameness is unbalanced feet then these horses may never have to be injected again or they can, at a minimum, go for longer intervals between injections. M a n y performance people who have horses in speed events think that a long toe increases stride length and therefore speed. Long toes cause an increase in break over time This photo shows a heel that even though it looks fairly and therefore average, close examination reveals that the hoof tubules cause a decrease are curving under the heel as they are being crushed. in speed. In all Left uncorrected by regular trimming of the heel to the horses a long widest part of the frog, this foot can develop into a case of under run heels toe increases the stress on the suspensory ligament and on the flexor tendons and collateral ligaments of the foot. It does this by causing the heel to become under run. The lower heels stretch all the aforementioned structures. The long toe also acts as a fulcrum on the front of the foot and so the hoof wall is set up to break away or pull away from the white line. This can also be a structural predisposing cause of white line disease. Some people get a little obsessed with the angle of the hoof. Each hoof is different but one thing is constant with all feet and that is that they should all be in balance. This is done by having the bones of the pastern and hoof in alignment. A broken back X-ray demonstrating a medial to lateral imbalance of P3. This condition causes abnormal wear and tear on the coffin joint and its supporting structures.
Ask The Vet
a tire out of balance. One side of his coffin joint will be under more stress than the opposite side. It also stresses the collateral ligaments of the foot. Hoof balancing has been performed on horses for many reasons with good results. There are progressive knowledgeable horse trainers who are looking out for their horses’ career longevity who have had hoof balancing performed on their horses as “preventive medicine”. This kind of mentality gets 50,000 miles out of the 40,000 mile warranty joint. Other horse owners have horses with chronic problems. Hoof balancing has improved all of these horses and to quote one horse owner “It has given me a new horse after years of chronic problems”.
Picture provided by AVS Equine Hospital
pastern hoof axis usually goes along with a horse that has long toes and under run heels. A broken forward pastern hoof axis goes along with a clubbed foot. Having the pastern and hoof bones in alignment is not possible unless the foot is trimmed or shod in a balanced manner. The heels should be trimmed even with the widest part of the frog. Few horses are timed this way. It gives the horses a larger X-ray demonstrating the proper alignment of foot print which distributes P1 P2 and P3 (coffin bone) his weight over more area. If his feet are not trimmed this way, he will feel like a person walking on a flip flop that is too small with their heel hanging off the back. The heels and toes follow each other. If he has under run heels, the toe will usually be long and he will feel like he is walking in long clown shoes. The feet also need to be balanced form side to side. If the foot is low on one side and high on the other, his foot will be like
Hoof balancing provides farriers and veterinarians a tool to treat and prevent problems that cannot be seen with naked eye. The precise measurements of the digital x-ray program allow the visualization of narrowed joint spaces that are difficult to pick up with plain x-rays and the naked eye. Sometimes the difference between the joint space on one side of a joint and the other is very minimal but it makes a difference. Veterinarians and farriers can benefit from each other’s knowledge as a team. Keeping your horse’s feet balanced helps them help your horse have that extra edge that is often the difference between winning and 2nd place or getting 50,000 miles vs. 30,000 out of your horse.

The Cowboy Junkie is one of my favorite places to look at tack & dream up creations. You might know of a few places that sell painted tack, but what you might not know is The Cowboy Junkie is the original creator of hand painted tack. Perhaps this is why Deanna’s work is so great, often imitated but never duplicated. All designs are hand painted to each person’s preference & your design options are truly endless. I love this leopard set, this set or something similar sells for $400, which is extremely reasonable. The conchos that come with it are also handmade & this combination of turquoise looks great with neutral colors. I’m normally not a huge fan of peace signs but the combination of the floral conchos, blue stones & peace signs are pretty & unusual. This set is called “Sweet Justice” was designed back in 2006 but some good things never go out of style. The combination of pistols with wings is pretty awesome. Meanwhile the roses just give it a hint of a softer, more feminine touch. The conchos are one of my favorite things about the set, after all each unique painted design should have its own set of conchos right? This last set was a custom order from a customer. This set has a refreshing & clean, almost simplistic look. I follow The Cowboy Junkie on Facebook for the latest update on tack creations; you get to see everyone’s latest purchases. Or for even more

I’m Cowboy Boot Obsessed.
My boot of the month pick for October was extremely difficult, there were so many great boots to choose from. This month’s boot is called Honky Tonk Woman, it is from the Macie Bean boot collection by Anderson Bean. It has a lot of great neutral colors for fall with just a pop of color. You can find this boots at select retailers that carry Anderson Bean boots.
Featuring Honey Rocksteer leather on the vamp & Chocolate Rocksteer tops. A thin line of turquoise piping goes down the boots & accents its features. The blue & tan stitching all over the boot looks great. The chocolate colored leather has a rustic & well-worn appeal to it. The honey vamp matches perfectly with the color of fall leaves. These are the kind of boots that look great with your favorite pair of jeans either tucked or untucked. To find an Anderson Bean retailer near you visit AB online at http://andersonbeanboots.com/cowboyboots/ You definitely won’t be sorry.

abor Day Weekend at the Piqua Heritage Festival (Piqua, Ohio) was the location of the Indiana High School Rodeo Associations first rodeo of the 2011-2012 season and was hosted by the Ohio High School Rodeo Association. Despite some not so great weather, the rodeo went without hitch! Saturday brought some great runs by newcomer, and freshman, Jesse Hoagland with a 15.683 time in barrels and a 21.658 time in poles. Junior, Katie George also showed everyone that she means business this year, kicking off her season with a super fast breakaway roping time of 2.98 seconds! Saturday night, after the rodeo, Team Indiana met for a team meeting and a pitch-in cookout, compliments of the rodeo dads who did a magnificent job grilling for everyone. It was a great time and was so nice to see all of the returning faces as well as all the new faces that have joined our association this year. Welcome new members to the I.H.S.R.A.!! The Indiana High School Rodeo Association is still accepting new members! Our season has just started and it’s not too late! Come join our association as we would love to have you! Being part of the High School Rodeo is an excellent opportunity for high school age teen cowboys and cowgirls of Indiana to promote the sport of rodeo east of the Mississippi. Along with meeting new people, making tons of new friends, competing for buckles, saddles, and bragging rights, scholarships are

If you are willing to put forth your time and dedication, rodeo colleges all over the U.S. are looking for teens just like you to join their rodeo teams and compete on a collegiate level. In the past several years, some of Indiana High School Rodeo Association’s participants have gone on to join rodeo teams at colleges and universities such as: Troy University, Fort Scott, Odessa College, Murray College, Southern Arkansas, and Iowa State just to name a few. Korri Allen
Korri is a 3 year member of the IHSRA and the 2011-2012 reining IHSRA Queen. She is a 16 year old junior from West Lebanon, Indiana and her parents are Dawn Allen and Kerry Allen. Her rodeo horses are Mo, Playboy, and Bird and her favorite event is barrel racing. Korri plans on attending a 4 year university after she graduates and would like to become a radiologist. She plans to continue her rodeo career even after college. If you ask Korri why she participates in the IHSRA, she’s bound to tell you “I enjoy participating in the IHSRA because it’s what I love. It’s everything I enjoy all wrapped up in one. I get to rodeo, be with my friends and be surrounded by the ones who support me, whom I love dearly. I love each and every one of the families. Everyone is always nice and willing to lend a helping hand to anyone. After the rodeos the kids will get together and play a simple game of corn hole or basketball. I love that all of the competitors can come together at the end of the day and be together and get along so well. The IHSRA is a great association that brings friends together and turns them into family.”
Sarah Schneider
Sarah is the current IHSRA Student President. She is an 18 year old senior from Lanesville, Indiana, and a 4 year member of the IHSRA. She is the daughter of Bud and Leah Schneider. Her rodeo horses are Kricket, Biscuit, and Steele and her favorite events are breakaway roping, goat tying, pole bending, and barrel racing. Sarah plans on rodeo’ing on a college level after graduation. Although she is still undecided on the college she will attend she does plan on obtaining a minor in Spanish language and a masters in another field, possibly business or biology/human sciences.
If you were to ask Sarah why she participates in the IHSRA, she will probably tell you, “The Association has allowed me to be able to compete in rodeo at a national level while in high school. I feel that rodeo not only makes you a better competitor and horseman, but it also prepares you for life after high school. I have made so many connections with people from all over the United States and even Canada, and it has shown me that there is more to life than just what you grow up around.” Don’t forget to check out our webpage for news, updates, and to check the latest standings on your favorite IHSRA cowboy or cowgirl!

he 2010-2011 Indiana Junior Rodeo Association season officially wrapped up on August 13th and 14th in Columbia City, IN during the IJRA State Finals. Nearly 50 kids from all over the state of Indiana gave their all, in hopes to head home with championship event and All-Around titles. A big Thank You goes out to the Andis, Hurley, Mackey, Thomas and Shreeve families for their part in organizing this years’ IJRA State Finals. Many 2010-2011 event champions were made over the weekend, wrapping up a great rodeo season that involved hours of practice, lots of determination, a little luck and a lot of blood, sweat, and tears. Please check out our website at www.ijra.org for a complete list of this year’s event champions in each age division. We also invite you to check out our IJRA – Indiana Junior Rodeo Association Facebook page to get more information about what is going on with IJRA, some more information on our sponsors and to ask any questions you may have about how to become part of IJRA. Once again we had an outstanding group of contestants in the IJRA 2011-2012 IJRA Princess Contest. Sydney Hurley, the 2010-2011 IJRA Princess did a super job over the past year, giving this year’s princess big boots to fill. Contestants Mary Lloyd, Alyssa Griffiths,

Pre- School Rodeo Kids During the State Finals we also watched as many of our 8th grade members competed in their last IJRA rodeo. We wish our graduating members the best of luck in the future and hope you will all come back to see us soon. We hope you have made lifelong friends, endless memories and the skills to take you where you want to go. Best wishes and congratulations go out to Bre Belden, Maci Stukowski, Brayton Dewees, Gavin McGary, Strand Barricklow, Zach Hunter, and Jessie Hoagland. Strand Barricklow, who got his start in IJRA as one of
the first Preschool Rodeo contestants, was also recognized as a 9+ year member. What a great group of cowboys and cowgirls! We expect to see great things from all of you for many years to come! What a great weekend! On Saturday, the kids had a pizza party and showed off their dance moves after the Buckle Ceremony. The Eastep family brought watermelon for everyone which tasted amazing at the end of a hot day! Jody and John Petro organized an afternoon
of water games, including a giant water slide with the help of the Yadon family. I don’t know if I have ever seen the kids have such a good time! Congratulations to our Round Pen/$500 raffle ticket drawing winner, Jennifer McNulty, from Danville, IN! Add in an egg toss, 50/50 raffle, Cowboy Church, Parents Bareback Barrel Racing and Ribbon Roping, and a silent auction and you have a fun filled, memory making weekend! Thank you to all the parents, families and friends who helped to make this a wonderful weekend for the kids!

CHRISTIAN COWBOY COLLECTION Willingness
J
esus didn’t choose the elite to be his disciples. He didn’t ask those who were in high places to step out in faith and become “fishers of men.” He chose everyday, regular people like you and me. He chose working people who admitted that they didn’t feel worthy. But, you see, what he required of them was nothing more than a willingness to follow him. He had what they needed, they didn’t need to bring anything with them to accomplish the task they were to be given. They just had to listen, believe what he said as truth and act on what he said. He would take care of the rest. One of my new favorite passages has become the first part of Luke 5. Luke 5:1-11 1 One day as Jesus was preaching on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, great crowds pressed in on him to listen to the word of God. 2 He noticed two empty boats at the water’s edge, for the fishermen had left them and were washing their nets. 3 Stepping into one of the boats, Jesus asked Simon, its owner, to push it out into the water. So he sat in the boat and taught the crowds from there. 4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Now go out where it is deeper, and let down your nets to catch some fish.” 5 “Master,” Simon replied, “we worked hard all last night and didn’t catch a thing. But if you say so, I’ll let the nets down again.” 6 And this time their nets were so full of fish they began to tear! 7 A shout for help brought their partners in the other boat, and soon both boats were filled with fish and on the verge of sinking. 8 When Simon Peter realized what had happened, he fell to his knees before Jesus and said, “Oh, Lord, please leave me—I’m too much of a sinner to be around you.” 9 For he was awestruck by the number of fish they had caught, as were the others with him. 10 His partners, James and John, the sons of Zebedee, were also amazed. Jesus replied to Simon, “Don’t be afraid! From now on you’ll be fishing for people!” 11 And as soon as they landed, they left everything and followed Jesus. For some reason this scene has played out in my mind a lot lately. If you put yourself there, it is easy to see how things went. I can imagine
Last & most important thought… Salvation is a gift and a choice...... Jesus died on the cross as the final sacrifice. When He was resurrected on the 3rd day, he defeated Satan for us. All we have to do is believe that He beat death and acknowledge it with our words. If we believe that and accept Him as our personal savior…we are promised eternal life with Him in Heaven. You can’t earn your way into Heaven; you have to believe your way there. So many people think they “aren’t good enough” to get to Heaven… But… Salvation is a GIFT from God and you don’t earn a gift. Gifts are something someone gives to you and for the gift to be yours, you have to accept it. All we have to do is accept that wonderful gift. I know I have…won’t you?
Page 52
w/ Christa Conway
Simon’s reaction when Jesus was finished preaching and asked him to push out to the deep waters to drop his nets. Simon had just finished cleaning his nets for the day and had not caught a thing while he was out earlier, I’m sure he didn’t want to get all of his gear back out thinking there would be no catch.....he even says “....we worked hard all last night and didn’t catch a thing.” It’s a good thing he didn’t stop there....he went on to say, “But if you say so, I’ll let the nets down again.”
He was reluctant to think that throwing his net out would bring a catch, but his willingness to listen to Jesus prevailed. And what a good thing that he chose to listen! He caught so many fish in his nets that they began to rip and another boat had to be called over to help pull in the fish.....and then the boats started to sink because there were so many fish!! I wondered when I read this if the second boat had cast out a net as well, or if they were just waiting and watching to see if anything would come of Jesus’ plan of fishing. Whether they did or didn’t throw out a net didn’t matter. You see, they still benefited from the willingness and obedience of Simon when they got to help haul in all of the fish! When one servant stepped out in faith and listened to Jesus there were many people who reaped the blessing! I find that so exciting! Simon felt unworthy, but even though he doubted at first, he was still willing to listen and act on Jesus’ instruction. His willingness to listen brought a blessing to more than just himself. We have a tendency to second guess the Holy Spirit’s instruction in our lives sometimes. We are probably all like Simon and have initial doubt when we feel that nudge. But the idea is to work past the doubt and into willingness. That is when we will see what God can do. That is when we will be blessed to the point of humbleness and that is when those who are sitting back to watch and see what “God is gonna do” will be blessed by the overflow! Until next month.... Don’t sit back and watch, Be willing.... Happy Trails & God Bless! Christa But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. Romans 5:15 For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Romans 10: 9-10
On the Trail
By Brother Brad Curtis of Mountain Top Cowboy Church
FINE WITH ME Was sittin` in the saddle No where I needed to be Just me and my pony That was fine with me
Then the wind began to howl It sure was a bit gusty Then it died down That was fine with me
Climbed back in the saddle Knowing I now had life’s key Headed back down the mountain That was fine with me
As we rode along Mountains were all I could see No one else around That was fine with me
It was then I heard a voice Really it sounded like three My heart began to break That was fine with me
It was then I realized I was now a trainee New at ridin` for the Lord That was fine with me
The trail got a bit rough But I was ridin` ol Rusty He never stumbled once That was fine with me
Stepped out of the saddle Got on bended knee I knew the Lord was the answer That was fine with me
Shouted, we’re ridin` for the brand Rusty didn’t disagree No longer just me and my pony That is fine with me
Stopped for a breather Under a big oak tree Resting in the shade That was fine with me
There on that mountain I didn’t have to beg or plea Just admitted I was lost That was fine with me
Acts 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
Said this is the life Asked Rusty if he would agree He didn’t say a word That was fine with me
When I got back to my feet Felt like I’d been set free My sins had been forgiven That was fine with me

Mystery of the Month T
his month’s picture was taken during a “Resue Race.” For those of you who do not remember this event from years past, a rider would run a horse down and around a pylon or keg where a second rider would be waiting to mount (flying mount) the horse behind rider number one and the two would then ride back across the timing line. What an exciting event to watch! Not only did these cowboys have to have excellent timing and athletic ability, they also had to have some extraordinary horses. The cowboy riding the horse in this picture is still very active in the horse industry. His name has been called many times to the winner’s circle and he is very well known for his many accomplishments. His family is carrying on in his footsteps....but they still have their work cut out competing against him. The second cowboy we need some help on, we have a name but need some more info. THis is where our readers come in.... Correctly identify our mystery cowboys, horse, year, location..... give us as much information as possible to win your choice of a one year subscription to The Horse Resource, a “Horsey Hat” or a “Horsey-T.” Please send us your photos from the past....we’d like to use them in our Mystery of the Month. Horses, people, events, etc... Send via email to: thehorseresource@msn.com or mail to The Horse Resource 12601 S CR 200 W Muncie, IN 47302 We will return your original photos to you.
We Have A Winner!!
Danette Potter of Cecil, Ohio was the first to contact us with all the correct information about our September Mystery of the Month. Danette knew that our mystery picture included (from left to right): Kelly Bowser, Renee & Troy Crumrine. Jr (Earl) Bowser. The horse that Troy is holding is named Headstrong Wonder. Troy won the 1992 Sweepstakes barrel race held at Chrissy Corral in Holland, Ohio. We also learned that the dog’s name was Chelsea. Headstrong Wonder was a 1987 AQHA gelding by Wonder Otoe (Otoe) and out of Headstrong Bug (Bugs Alive in 75 x Headstrong Maid TB.) Danette will get her choice of a “Horsey” T-shirt, a “Horsey” hat or a FREE subscription to the “Fast” Horse Resource. Amanda Dilbone Griffo and Paul Martin also identified everyone in the photo. Congratulations to our winner! A special thanks to Earl (Jr.) Bowser for sending us our Mystery of the Month photo!
Do You Still Like Playing? Help Us Out..... We are running low on photos.....Please send us your older photos of horsemen and women (and kids) that are still active in the horse business today. Or if you have pictures of a well known horse or event....that will mix things up a bit. We’re up for some new mysterys if you are!! Keep sending us those photos!! Send via email to thehorseresource@msn.com or mail to 12601 S CR 200 W Muncie, IN 47302 Page 63
