LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

I

t’s Congress time! Not to mention many other exciting horse related events....like the IBRA National Finals and the NBHA Championships to name a few. Along with this time of year comes fuzzy horses and chilly nights. I do enjoy showing my barrel horses this time of year though. I’m not sure what it is about the cool fall evenings at a barrel race that seem so appealing to me....maybe because I’m over the sweaty summer shows in jeans and a long sleeve shirt and cowboy hat. That attire is much more comfortable this time of year.

On a somber note, we want to send our condolences out to the Gilliland family who lost their daughter, Chalee, this past month. Your’re in our thoughts and prayers and we will be dedicating next month’s (November) issue to Chalee.

You’ll notice as you flip through this month’s pages that we have some great articles from our regulars, coverage via IBRA’s home office of three different state shows and another special feature from Steve Heuertz. Steve took a trip to Saratoga to cover the Travers and wait until you see the beautiful pictures he brought back for us! Not to mention the history and tradition you can read about this month that goes hand and hand with Saratoga. I’m sure you’ll enjoy your trip through the pages.

We’ve been busy around here as usual. It’s time again for the Annual Stallion Calendar and we’ve been working to compile some featured stallions to “pretty” up your office wall for 2013.

I’m sure you won’t be disappointed. For those who appreciate the “Studs,” you have to be on the mailing list to be sure and get one. We will mail all active subscribers a copy as well as give them away for free (you pay shipping) to anyone who requests one.

News Habronema’s Painful Lesions Lessen Thanks to Sox For Horses Havana, FL--September 11, 2012--Its name may remind you of a children’s toy company, but there’s nothing playful about habro or ‘summer sores.’ Habronemiasis is a common but painful equine affliction that occurs as the result of nematode infestation of the skin, and typically manifests as granulomatous masses and/or erosions.

There are three distinct types of habronemiasis: Conjunctival (larvae affix to the eyelid or conjunctiva); Gastric (affecting stomach mucosa); and Cutaneous.

Cutaneous habronemiasis is recognized by granular lesions, caused by invasion into the skin or through open wounds by larvae of Habronema spp. and/or Draschia megastoma. Also known as swamp cancer, summer sores, bursati, granular dermatitis and jack sores, cutaneous habronemiasis appears as ulcerative skin nodules in the spring and summer.

While any horse or pony can be affected, some are more prone to the condition, developing lesions year after year. Commonly affected areas include BEFORE legs, penis, preputial sheath, eyes, and any open skin wounds.

Lori J.’s gelding was one of the unlucky ones, suffering each spring and summer from painful habro irritations. Nothing yet had proved to offer relief until she purchased a set of Summer Whinnys™ by Sox For Horses.

would go on all summer and at least once or twice a summer, the vet would have to dig out these deep kunkers.”

The response to treating habro sores, by veterinarians such as the Atlanta Equine Clinic, typically includes systemic steroid therapy to reduce pain and swelling, fly control and repellants, and topical skin care to discourage flies from landing and depositing infectious larvae into existing wounds.

“After five years of frustration,” she continued, “I desperately Googled everything I could think of and came upon Summer Whinnys™/Sox For Horses. News The Horse Named “Sioux” By: Tammie Hiatt

There are horses that change people’s lives and a chestnut gelding named Sioux was one of those horses. He came into Phyllis Porterfield’s life when he was 5 years old. “Dad had seen him at a guy’s house that lived about 20

miles from us. He was 4 at the time and still a stud,” recalls Phyllis.

“We bought him for $600. He was broke to ride, at least he would go straight, he wouldn’t turn or back up. He was pretty hard to get along with for a while then he started coming around and I started him on the barrels. I didn’t think he would ever be a barrel horse, I had to carry a bat to keep him loping through the pattern, he was so lazy. He sure got over that!”

Sioux lived with the Porterfield family until August 24, 2012. The double bred Three Bars superstar’s registered name was “I’m a Cool Bar”. “His sire’s name was “Sue’s Brother”. My mom started calling him Sue. I told her I wasn’t riding a gelding that was named “Sue” so we decided we would change the spelling to “Sioux”. I could live with that,” Phyllis said.

Sioux quickly took away any doubts Phyllis had about his ability as a barrel horse. She began hauling him to MRCA rodeos, the Great Lakes Circuit Finals, and then the pair became a fixture at the IPRA rodeos and the International Finals Rodeo. Phyllis and Sioux qualified for IFR24 in 1994, IFR28 in 1998, and IFR32 in 2002.

When Sioux was 18 years old he got a new jockey, Porterfield’s 8-yearold daughter, LaRae. “I always wanted to ride him because he was my Mom’s. I was in a junior rodeo finals and it was between me and another girl winning the barrels. I had never ridden Sioux and Mom and I were in the practice pen. I was having trouble holding him because you couldn’t pull back on him or he would run off. She had went to the barn to get a different bit for me and when she came back to the arena he had run off with me and I was out there turning him in little circles to get him to stop. I ended up riding him at the finals and won a round on him,” said LaRae who just turned 20 years old. “I owe everything to Sioux. Without him, nothing would be the same as it is right now. My Mom made him, I got to hang on and just ride. I trusted him more than anything. I was very fortunate to have ridden him.”

Sioux and LaRae had a stellar career together. The duo made appearances at IFR33 in 2003, IFR34, IFR35, and IFR37. The team earned the IFR35 High Money Winner Award. Sioux also had a hand in winning another IFR High Money title for Chip Porterfield at IFR32. Sioux was a solid calf horse and heading horse and was often called to duty.

“Everyone that rode him won on him,” said Phyllis. “He was just that kind of horse. When he didn’t look like he was running was when he would clock. I was lucky to have had him. He was the first one that I ever trained. I’ve trained a couple since him that have done well and went on to do well with their new owners. But Sioux was the once in a lifetime kind of horse.”

“I would have to say that his strength as a barrel horse was his first barrel. He was in and out of it so fast. Martha Josey asked to use a video of him and LaRae competing at their Junior World Barrel Race in one of her instructional videos as the kind of first barrel you want your horse to make.

That was really a compliment.”

“Kathy Yerigan leased him one year for the IFR and they set an arena record at the State Fair Arena. Then the IFR moved to the Ford Center and he and LaRae set an arena record there. The next year when the IFR moved back to the State Fair Arena, they set another arena record,” said Phyllis.

“I also won the Longhorn Rodeo Series Finals on him,” recalls LaRae. “He and I won the reserve champion at the 2003 Josey Junior World Barrel Race. He won three saddles at that barrel race with three different girls. The last run I made on him was at a big Barrel Bash in Missouri, he won 3rd and was 26 years old. We decided to retire him at that point. He would have probably run another year or so and won, but I had some nice colts that Mom and Dad had bought for me and I knew I wouldn’t ride them if I was still running him,” said LaRae. “He wasn’t happy about his retirement,” said LaRae. “His lot was beside the driveway and when we would be driving out, he would run down the driveway beside us. He still wanted to go.”

“I always said Mom treated him better than me and Lance,” LaRae laughs. “She treated him like a baby. Mom was on her way home from a doctor’s appointment when she got a call from one of our boarders that said a horse was down in the pasture and they couldn’t get him up.

She called the vet and they both arrived at the house at the same time.

Sioux had coliced and there wasn’t anything that could be done. He had waited on Mom to get home so she could say good-bye to him.”

“It was such a hard thing for all of us,” said LaRae. “I went to the pasture crying my eyes out when my horse, Rolex came up to me. Usually this horse can’t be caught without running him up into a stall, but he came right up to me. I told him he had some huge shoes to fill. We went to two rodeos last weekend and won second at both, it’s like Sioux is with us.”

The gelding named Sioux was laid to rest near the Porterfield’s home in Sparta, MO. Sioux will forever be known as one of the great horses of the barrel racing world.

News FQHRA to host annual meeting in Tallahassee on November 10.

September 26, 2012 - The 2012 Florida Quarter Horse Racing Association Annual Membership Meeting will be held at 1 p.m, Saturday, November 10, at AVS Equine Hospital, 9085 Magnolia Hill Drive, Tallahassee, Florida.

Everyone is encouraged to update their membership if they haven’t done so at this point. At the 2011 annual meeting it was voted to make all memberships run from July 1 to June 30 each year to coincide with Florida DBPR’s fiscal year for licensing for owners, trainers, etc.

Therefore all memberships expired June 30, 2012. Only current year members will have voting privileges. Memberships must be renewed BEFORE the day of the meeting. Ball Ball Corona Upsets in Gordon Mobley Futurity Final

ANDERSON, IND. – September 15, 2012 –Ball Ball Corona and Harold Collins pulled the 13-1 upset to take home top honors in the third running of the $100,000 added Gordon Mobley Futurity Finals on Saturday, Sept. 15 at Hoosier Park Racing & Casino. The Mobley Futurity Finals, the premier event for two-year-old Indiana sired Quarter Horses, was contested over 350 yards. Ball Ball Corona finished a game second in her division of the Mobley trials on Aug. 31 at Hoosier Park with Collins in the irons, once again.

Starting from post five in the 10-horse field, Ball Ball Corona broke from the gate alertly and barreled down the track to get the first call. Collins kept the two-year-old filly on task all the way through the dash and the beat the field to the wire by one half of a length in a time of :18.278 seconds. Chilled Too The Bone and Jose Beltran dueled down the track to finish a game second while Dash Ta Win and Cesar Carrilo finished third. The heavily favored and fastest trial winner, Kitticelli, never fired and finished tenth. Ball Ball Corona returned $13.20 to her backers.

“She’s definitely a barn favorite,” winning trainer Ron Raper noted.

“She is the culmination of a breeding program we started a long time ago. She’s always been a nice little mare who is always close. Today, she picked the right time to run a big one.”

Sired by Mito Corona, Ball Ball Corona notched her first career victory in seven lifetimes starts as she pushed her career earnings over $60,000.

Owned and bred by Maurice Locklear, Ball Ball Corona has now finished in the money in all three of her Hoosier Park outings.

Ron Raper is currently atop the Hoosier Park leading trainer standings for the 2012 Quarter Horse meet as he has saddled five winners from 41 starters.

Certified Indiana Bred Barrel Racing & Quarter Horse Racing

D

uring the past three years the Indiana Barrel Racing Futurity, with the help of the Quarter Horse Racing Association of Indiana, has had added incentive money offered to Certified Indiana Bred horses.

The criteria for being eligible for this is that a horse must be certified by the State of Indiana and must have at least one race out.

(Must have started in one official Quarter Horse race.)

This program was set up to help create a 2nd career path for horses after they have been raced. It encourages those looking for a barrel prospect to look at race horses and in doing so, it allows these race horses to go on and do other things. Part of the money goes to the Futurity and part goes to the Open 4D that’s held on Saturday. Although our entries have not been large, by advertising and word of mouth we hope to make this program grow each year.

Dianna Jaqua of Noblesville, Indiana was top money earner for this program in the Open 4D. She was riding a Twaynas Dash horse, named HQH Dash of Sugar.

Of course, any program like this will take some time to get going until people understand how it works (and realize what the future hope for it will be.) Basically, if someone buys or raises a horse that fits the criteria, that horse (if it’s 4 years old) would be eligible for the Futurity, and after that would be eligible (at any age) for the Open Barrel Race.

Also, I’ve been working on a special committee with the AQHA to try and get a similar program lined up with them. It’s been slow to get started, but we hope that it will lead to side pots at shows for horses that have been previously raced and will eventually be recognized through the AQHA in some capacity.

There are no additional fees charged for this incentive. You just need proof that the entry is a Certified Indiana Bred and has raced at least one time.

The upcoming sale, sponsored by the QHRAI during the last week of October, would be a perfect place to buy a horse suitable for this program. I’m also working on some other incentives to help make the program more lucrative.

The 2012 winner of the program was Trent Roords of Rensselaer, Indiana. Trent rode a 4-year-old that he bought at the racetrack from Dianne Moester. The horse isby Dianne’s stallion, Royal Quick Charm.

The mare’s name is A Touch of Charm. Trent also received money for the Open 4D on Saturday.

Polo Wraps VS Splint Boots Leann1412 I can’t decide which one I would rather have on my geldings back legs I think the splint provide more protection but then everybody has the polo wraps and say that they love them.......

Boots are a bit sturdier so can protect from harder blows, and are faster to put on and off. But they can get hotter and get dirt in them moreso than polos.

I get a better fit using polos than rear boots as one of mine is in between sizes on rear boots... just need to make sure they are wrapped properly etc.

RoaniePonie11 I just recently sold all but one pair of my CE Legacy boots to switch to mainly polos. I now put CE boots on the front & wraps on the back because the ill fit on my mares rear legs (i believe) was causing weird swelling. She started getting widpuffs (shes 3 and doesnt get pushed) and I was NOT happy. I couldn’t for the life of me figure out why. I switched to polos and I believe it has helped a ton. stated they can take the blow from the back legs better. I’d use polos all around more often if I could find a set of four that were big enough for the back and small enough for the front. Boots just seem like they would itch to me and you have all that over lap running down the outside of the leg. makalantaylor Polos are great and I love to use them on the back, however if you choose to use them make sure you know the CORRECT way to wrap them. If they are not wrapped properly you can do more harm than good.

CodaHonor I personally prefer boots all around because I know how to put them on properly. I do not know to to properly wrap polos and even if I did, I would constantly be worried that they would come undone or maybe I didn’t put them on perfectly or whatever. The boots just take away that worry. I really like the Iconoclast boots. Also, I don’t leave the boots on for long periods of time so I don’t worry about overheating the legs. missroselee I have done both off and on. I have now gone to nothing but polos. I have never really seen a pair of boots that fit a horse perfectly. I like with the polos that I get that custom fit, less sweat, less dirt.

I’ve always wondered if the heavy boots ever interfere with mobility, but have never really substantiaed it way or another. You see top horses with both polos and boots.

I’ve worn neoprene braces before for knees/ankles/etc and always thought they were irritating and uncomfortable....not saying my horse feels the same way but I like polos.

If you learn how to use polos, don’t put them on until you are ready to warm up and run, and take them off after, just like you are supposed to do with boots. cyount2009 It doesn’t matter to me what you put on as long as either is put on correctly! It is a pet peeve of mine to see horses walking around with boots on the wrong legs or wraps pulled the wrong direction. It makes me want to approach the person that put them on and ask “Do you know those are on wrong? Do you know you are pulling the tendons, muscles and legiments the wrong direction and in-

creasing the risk of your horse getting hurt? You’re better off not putting anything on then doing it that way! Until you learn to put those on correctly your throwing your time and money out the window!”

I think both boots and wraps are great tools as long as they used correctly! If you choose to use the wraps PLEASE educate yourself on the proper way to to put them on. It is a science and if it is done wrong it can result in injury! But that is true for boots too!

Barrel_Racer_1699 Posts: 63 Location: Ava, MO I always just use sport boots all around my horses’ legs, but I would rather use splints then polos in most cases. I see quite a few people having to re-wrap the polos because they slip down their legs. And also I see some of them ductape the velcro to help stay but they still slip. Also, neither polos or splint boots support the suspensory ligiment.

State News

As our Indiana IBRA members look towards the National Finals at Freedom Hall this is a good time to recap a very successful year for our membership. Our 2012 season started out with our fundraisers - first one was the National gate fundraiser which awarded 113 free stalls for our members at out state show Then came a successful tack sale fundraiser hosted by Chad & Kelly Bricker.

All the hard work by the members and reps made the Indiana IBRA State Show a great success To recap the Winners of each class: 1D

Pennsylvania members from both the East & West came together on August 4th & 5th for their 2012 State Finals which was held at Diamond 7 Arena in Dillsburg, PA. This year’s State Final was sponsored

Kip Kerstetter was the high bidder of this team and donated the money he won back to the Pee Wee riders! Pee Wee riders also receive a bag full of goodies for their efforts!

On Saturday we had 147 riders in the Open which was won by Rachael Owens on Need Cash Badly, she ran a time of 15.107. The 2D Open was won by Bobby Eisler, Jr. riding Panama Fast As U, the 3D was won by East Rep, Gay Yorlets riding Primetime Ferrari, & the 4D was won by Brittany Bonneau riding Romeo. In a class of 36 Youth riders, Rachael Owens came back to win it on the same horse with a time of 15.190. The Youth 2D was won by Chasey Wain riding Texas, and the 3D winner was Krista Feaser riding Isle Be Seeing You. The West Rep, Shana Grow won the Master class of 40 riders, riding Smokin Pay Day with a time of 15.141. The Master 2D was won by Ginny Bowman riding Jesse, and the 3D winner was Lorraine King on ST Cinnamon. On Saturday all division winners that were members received Wild Cards.

We came back on Sunday for the fastest time of the weekend ran by West Rep, Shana Grow riding Smokin Pay Day. Shana won the Open of 86 riders, with a time of 14.929 which was close to the arena record.

The Open 2D was won by Melinda Buterbaugh riding Bill, the 3D was won by Billy Frey riding Menudo Dry Doc, & the 4D was won by Caroline Van Pelt riding Peps Snickers Bar. We had 23 riders in the Youth class which was won by Nicole Valeri riding McNative posting a time of 15.485. The 2D Youth class was won by Gabrielle Nichelson riding Zep, & the 3D was won by Kylee Kurtz on Frankie. There were 29 riders in the Master class which won by our top rider of the weekend, Shana Grow riding Smokin Pay Day posting another “smokin” time of 14.975. The Master 2D was won by Jason Kutz riding Jet, & coming back for a repeat 3D win was Lorraine King riding ST Cinnamon. All riders on Sunday were awarded buckets donated by Wright’s Milling that had gift certificates from CSI Pads & Addictive Apparel, bottles of Healthy Haircoat, & travel mugs donated by First National Bank.

TN IBRA State Finals - August 17-19, 2012, Murfreesboro, TN Pictures by Puhl’s Photography TN IBRA held its 2012 State Finals in Murfreesboro, TN on August 17 and 18th. This years state was a huge success. We crowned 10 State Champions from the East and 10 State Champions from the West. escribing directions to Saratoga Race Course, Red Smith once wrote, “From New York City you drive north for about 175 miles, turn left on Union Avenue and go back 100 years.” Today’s world of GPS devices and Google Maps may lend many alternate routes, however no matter which is chosen, the final destination is always a step back in time.

Saratoga

For many, Saratoga is an annual pilgrimage that reminds us of what once was, when life seemed simpler and the horse was the embodiment of that reality. Today, little has changed at Saratoga and every summer in late July it reopens its gates and allows people the chance to capture the experiences previous generations were afforded.

Join this pilgrimage and photo journey (August 23-26, 2012) back to a place where the horse is king and time has chosen to ignore.

Appearing to be nothing more than a simple unpaved oval-shaped road, many people will walk down its path and not realize the storied treasure beneath their feet;

The Spa

At the height of the American Civil War and one month after the Battle of Gettysburg, Saratoga Race Course held its inaugural meet in America’s first resort town, named for its naturally occurring mineral springs, Saratoga Springs, NY. Beginning on August 3, 1863 and lasting only four days, the meet was held at the old Saratoga Trotting Course. Known today as Horse Haven, it is a remnant of the original track and still exists on Saratoga’s Oklahoma backstretch. The inaugural meet was successful and on August 26, 1863, the Saratoga Racing Association was formed to develop the future of Saratoga or “The Spa” as it would later become nicknamed.

That following year Saratoga moved across Union Avenue to its present location.

While the first meet lasted only four days, the Saratoga race meet has since evolved to one of the most prestigious in American racing and lasts a total of 40 days beginning each year in late July and ending in early September. Racing at Saratoga is so grand that in 2012, the tracks 149th year, a total of 54 stakes races were held

of which 35 were of the graded variety. To put this in perspective, many entire states have either a small handful or altogether no graded stakes races while Saratoga itself has four Grade 3’s, 15 Grade 2’s and an astonishing 16 Grade 1’s (the highest level of American racing). In fact, on Travers weekend alone, there was one Grade 2 and five Grade 1 races (all of which are captured photographically within this article).

Likely due to the tremendous competition yielded at its high class racing meet, Saratoga has been the site of many historic defeats of great horses including Man o’ War, Secretariat and Gallant Fox. Subsequently, Saratoga earned the title “The Graveyard of Champions” as races at the historic venue truly present some of the toughest challenges any horse might ever encounter.

Aside from the action on the main track, Saratoga is also known for its legendary Oklahoma Training Track that sits close to the site of the original meet. Here, every morning beginning at 5:30am, horses emerge from rustic barns and and set foot on the track to train amidst a spectacular foggy backdrop that epitomizes the soul of the L to R: Trees canopy Clare Saratoga experience.

Today, “The Spa” remains the oldest modern sports venue in the United States and continues to observe many of its traditions from years past including charms such as allowing anyone to reserve their seat by merely leaving a newspaper upon it. In one year, Saratoga will celebrate its 150th anniversary with the hope that the next 150 years will be as wonderful as the first.

The Mosstest Hoss That Ever Was

Forever linked together, the presence of Man o’ War is felt at Saratoga. From the winding pathway that is Man o’ War Way to the affectionately named Big Red Spring and the Travers trophy that is named the Man o’ War Cup, it is clear that Man o’ War was and remains part of Saratoga.

Sired by the mighty Fair Play and out of the dam Mahubah, Man o’ War was born March 29, 1917. Bred and originally owned

by August Belmont Jr., Man o’ War found his way to Saratoga when he was sold at the 1918 yearling sale to Samuel Riddle for $5,000. One year later, Man o’ War would begin a career that catapulted him into the racing stratosphere.

Man o’ War, who was nicknamed “Big Red” or just “Red” due to his bright chestnut coat, raced a total of 21 times (six at Saratoga), winning 20 and finishing second just once. His lone loss came as a two-year-old in the Sanford Memorial Stakes at…Saratoga. To this day there are multiple opinions as to why Red lost. While some believe his jockey,

Johnny Loftus, purposely lost the race, others claim Man o’ War was facing the wrong direction when the race started (there were no starting gates in 1919, instead horses lined up behind a long thin net called the “barrier” that was lifted to start the race).

Nonetheless, although closing fast, and by some accounts taking the lead shortly after the finish, Man o’ War lost the Sanford by ½ length. That day, the horse that beat Man o’ War was the appropriately named, Upset.

Still, the Big Red horse would set the racing world on fire.

During his illustrious career Man o’ War won prestigious races including the Hopeful Stakes, Preakness, Belmont Stakes, Travers and Jockey Club Gold Cup among many others. His other accomplishments include setting eight speed records, winning one race by an astonishing 100 lengths and defeating the first Triple Crown winner, Sir Barton, in a match race. Many of these feats occurred while carrying significantly more weight than his opponents as a handicap measure.

Man o’ War Way

Man o’ War retired from racing at the end of 1920 and eventually entertained countless visitors at Riddle’s Faraway Farm. There, he developed a bond with his devoted groom, Will Harbut, who famously said of Man o’ War, “he’s just the mosstest hoss that ever was.” Red was extremely successful at stud and sired a Triple Crown winner, War Admiral. Even in retirement, Big Red’s fame was so profound that his 21st birthday celebration was nationally broadcast via radio.

On November 1, 1947 Man o’ War died at the age of 30 years old. He is believed to be the first horse ever to be embalmed and his funeral was broadcast on national radio. Today, he is buried at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY. In 1999, The Blood-Horse named Man o’ War #1 on the Top 100 Race-

The Travers

The Travers is a $1,000,000 Grade 1 Thoroughbred race run at 1 ¼ miles on dirt that, much like the three races that make up the Triple Crown, is restricted to three-year-olds.

of the Saratoga Racing Association, William Travers and is the oldest stakes race for three-year-olds in American Thoroughbred Racing. In the 148 years since its inception, the Travers has been run in all but six years (1896, 18981900, 1911 and 1912).

The race is the centerpiece of the prestigious Saratoga meet and is often referred to as “The Mid-Summer Derby.”

Each year the Travers winner is awarded the Man o’ War Cup and the owner’s silks are subsequently painted on a jockey statue that resides in the Saratoga paddock and a canoe that floats on a pond in the infield.

Earlier this year, many racing fans, experts and handicappers believed the field heading into the Kentucky Derby was one of the deepest groups of sophomores in recent memory. Of the 20 horses that entered the Kentucky Derby starting gate, one horse asserted himself to the absolute top of the division when he won both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes and bid to become the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978. Alas, history was not meant to be as dual classic champion, I’ll Have Another, was scratched from the Belmont Stakes and retired the day before he was given his chance at racing immortality.

doo (1881), Man o’ War (1920), Native Dancer (1953), Sword Dancer (1959), Buckpasser (1966), Damascus (1967), Alydar (1978), Easy Goer (1989), Holy Bull (1994) and Point Given (2001). However, only one horse in history has been able to win the Triple Crown and complete the “superfecta” with a win in the Travers. Whirlaway accomplished this remarkable feat for the legendary Calumet Farm in 1941.

Since then, the deep group of three-year-olds has dramatically thinned as other prominent stars including Union Rags (Belmont Stakes winner), Bodemeister (2nd in Kentucky Derby and Preakness) and Hansen (Eclipse Award winning two-year-old male) have also retired and newer star Paynter (Haskell Invitational winner) was also temporarily out of training. The result left many wondering exactly how the Travers field would end up shaping.

Despite the changes in the three-year-old division, eleven other horses sought their own opportunity for stardom with a potential victory in the Travers. Fresh off his win in the Jim Dandy (Gr. 2) at Saratoga (the local prep for the Travers), Alpha was installed as the 5-2 morning line favorite and looked the role of Travers champion as he was part of that original group that spoke of depth in the division earlier in the year.

After breaking from the gate, Alpha and jockey Ramon Dominguez were able to establish a comfortable position running third while stalking just outside pace-setter Speightscity and Stealcase.

However, just to Alpha’s inside and running in fourth position, 31-1 shot Golden Ticket and jockey David Cohen clung to the rail in ground-saving fashion. The field maintained this position down the backstretch until Alpha hooked outside Stealcase and made a move for the lead heading into the final turn. He quickly corralled the 23-1 shot and set his sights on Speightcity with a move four-wide at the top of the stretch. Tiring, Speightcity couldn’t withstand the charge and Alpha overtook the lead for a brief moment until Golden Ticket shot up the inside rail and surged to the front. With one furlong to go, Golden Ticket appeared to have opened up on Alpha, but the determined morning line favorite fought back and made up an entire length on the leader in the final yards of the race. When Alpha and Golden Ticket hit the wire, the Saratoga crowd realized they had absolutely no idea who had won the race. Immediately the word “Photo” pulsated on the infield tote board and the racing world waited for 2 ½ minutes until an explosion of sound ensued from the 46,528 in attendance as track announcer Tom Durkin announced, “It’s a Dead Heat in the Travers!”

Of those cheering were two men that traced a friendship back to growing up together in Lexington, KY. Kiaran McLaughlin and Kenny McPeek had just witnessed history in the first dead heat in the Travers since Attila and Acrobat crossed the wire together in 1874.

However, that year a runoff was held after the race with Attila winning and officially claiming the Travers victory. McLaughlin

and McPeek though wouldn’t witness a repeat of the 1874 outcome.

Instead, today they would become more than childhood friends as they now became linked as the two trainers to finish in a dead heat in one of America’s most historic and prestigious races. For McLaughlin, he had Alpha to thank for this honor and for McPeek, the same gratitude owed to Golden Ticket.

Prior to the Travers, people were wondering what might have been had the likes of I’ll Have Another, Union Rags, Bodemesiter, Hansen or Paynter made the race. However, 2 ½ minutes afterward, as horse racing often does, there were no more wishes or regrets. No, those feelings had been replaced by the realization that what had just been witnessed was a far greater imagination.

On September 3, 2012, the Saratoga race meet concluded, just over one week after the dramatic Travers dead heat. The delightfully sweet 40-day race meet is a magic elixir that leaves you satisfied yet perpetually craving your next bite. Still, while the gates close and the horses and people move elsewhere, the memories of a Saratoga summer live within the hearts of many and provide a little extra warmth during those coldest of winter days. That is, until next July, when that cold is long gone and for the 150th time Saratoga will once again embark on a journey back in time.

Steve Heuertz; Steve’s horse and loyal friend,

Cowboy, a 17-year-old, Red Dun Quarter Horse It started with a horse named Cowboy. Disregarded and discounted, this nine-year-old Red Dun Quarter Horse left his life as a ranch horse in South Dakota and ventured a new path into the life of Steve Heuertz in 2004. Shortly thereafter, a bond was formed that fully catapulted Steve into the world of the horse where he became fascinated with the wonderful capabilities of this majestic animal.

Of particular interest were the speed, endurance and competitive spirit demonstrated by the equine heroes within the sport of Thoroughbred Racing. Although initially satisfied with observing from afar, Steve became increasingly captivated by the sport and turned toward capturing the splendor of racing via his other passion, photography. The result was a recipe where he could combine his great love for horses, racing and photography into one harmonious blend that was greater than the sum of its parts.

Since then, racing has taken Steve across the country to such wonderful places as Saratoga Race Course, Churchill Downs, Santa Anita Park, Pimlico, Belmont Park, Keeneland and Hooiser Park. During these travels, Steve has been fortunate to witness and photograph equally wonderful races such as the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes (racing’s famed Triple Crown) as well as the Travers, Santa Anita Derby, Indiana Derby and the Breeders’ Cup. However, residing in the Chicago suburb of St. Charles, IL, Steve regularly frequents Arlington Park and Hawthorne Race Course where he has enjoyed capturing magnificent races like the Arlington Million and Hawthorne Gold Cup. Today, Steve’s passion for horses, racing and photography is like a fire that continues to be stoked. While either behind the lens capturing the thrill of a Grade 1 race or in the saddle loping around a field with Cowboy, Steve has learned to operate under the simple truth that the more he is able to involve the horse in his life, the happier his days become.

My Friend, Freckles

I’ll admit, I have had my moments where I wanted to get rid of her (I kind of still feel guilty about the incident in Kentucky.) Maybe I’m starting to get a little sentimental the older I get, but I really think she’s starting to grown on me.

OK, so she is sickeningly pretty with her big brown eys and long wavy hair....and she is so loyal it sometimes makes me want to gag....but I guess those aren’t really such bad qualities to have in a friend, right?

You see, the “pretty” gets us a little more attention. Kind of like Princess Annabelle’s sad eyes that got us treats....now it’s the pretty puppy face that works it’s magic.

I know I’ve mentioned her before in my ramblings, but this month I have to give another shout out to my friend, Freckles.

We’ve grown a little closer since it’s just us in the house now. (No more Princess Annabelle to crimp my style.)

And the “loyal”...well, the other day I got locked out in the garage and apparently Freckles was the only one who could hear me whining. My people were too involved in their conversation and it was Freckles who came to my rescue. She started acting like she was in a scene from Lassie. You know, the one where Timmy falls down the well? (That’s one of my favorites, maybe she’d heard me mention it....anyway....) She was barking and turning circles, way out of her normal “in-house”

behavior, until she got the attention of the people. Of course their first thought was to let her outside, but she was persistant and she kept after them until they finally opened the garage door, setting me free. She was happy to see me and I was happy to be out. So, I guess the loyal thing is OK in my book.

In all reality, I’m kind of glad to have another canine who has the same qualities as me. I guess we make a good team, you know what I mean? I may need to work on the loyal thing a little, but it’s all good.

Until next month, Don’t tell Freckles, I don’t want it to go to her head. Just sayin’......

Knocking Down The Barrel I

don’t barrel race anymore; and the fact is, when I did, I wasn’t that good at it. I loved all the practice that it required; the connection that it created between me and my horse, Ace; the adrenaline rush that came with every run; and the friends that I saw every weekend.

over the possibility of failing, that there was no way that I could succeed. And if by chance and against the overwhelming force of selfperceived, impending failure, I did succeed; the celebration and reward would be very short-lived.

But as I look back on it now, there were two things that kept me from being a better barrel racer: one, I was more worried about knocking a barrel down than I was excited about running a fast time; and two, I never let myself just have fun. Failure was a dark cloud that loomed over every arena and the possibility of a clean run.

Does it really matter if the barrels are standing or we hit the “trifecta”, and all three barrels are lying down in the dirt?

Since I was a child, the fear of failure has robbed me of the joy of a success; whether it was on a grade school test, the next courtroom battle as an attorney, or something as relatively insignificant as a barrel run at a local show. But failing was failing! Regardless of the size of the failure, the distaste of a bad run stayed fresh through a whole weekend; but the sweetness of a great run lasted only till I saddled up for the next one. I could never savor success; but the bitterness of failure remained.

I’ve always thought there was a lot to learn from horses; and I guess, there’s a lot to learn from barrel races. There have been times away from the dirt, the barrels and a time clock, that I’ve been so anxious

Unless you’re a professional, leaving the barrels up won’t pay the bills; but knocking over all three won’t mean that you can’t drive home and load up to do it again the next weekend.

But letting yourself enjoy the run – barrels standing or not - will serve as a reward in and of itself; if (and it’s a huge “if” for me but hopefully not for you), we can just enjoy it completely without consideration of the barrels.

And, when we enjoy it for what it is; then we have reached a point where we have moved from “just existing” to “truly living” (or as I like to say, “We have begun to ‘Live Exceptionally’!”)

Colic: A Disease That Has Many Faces

Another preventative of colic is proper mouth care. Many owners thick that dental care is for older horses when in fact a young horse from the yearling to the 5 year old year loses as deciduous teeth and gains as permanent teeth, every tooth in its mouth. This process keeps the mouth in a constant state of imbalance for the young horse. Therefore in reality, the younger horse should have their teeth floated twice a year on average versus once yearly for horses over five years of age.

Parasite control with proper diagnosis of the quantity and type of parasite can be monitored through fecal egg counts. In some farm situations it proves to be too difficult to pull individual fecal samples from groups of horses in the same pasture and many of these farms still deworm on a group basis. Whatever the situation, parasite control can have a huge impact on the number and severity of equine colics. It can also have an effect on the general health of the horse and its overall bloom and appearance. An equine veterinarian is best suited to monitor the horse’s parasite control program.

Other aspects of the management program such as clean water maintenance, exercise, lameness, social interaction of different horses with each other and overall general comfort can also affect the number and severity of colics on a farm. These management tools require the daily watchful eye of a dedicated horsemen who has the ability to quickly and easily notice anything abnormal about the horse’s daily environment or its behavior.

Once all the different aspects of the preventative health management program have been worked out then at least the owner/farm manager has done everything that can be done to prevent colic in their horses.

However even in the best managed farms there will be the occasional bout of colic. This is because there are some things that are out of our control. The question then becomes what to do about a case of colic when it happens. The best thing to do, and it usually proves to be best for the horse and the long term economics of the situation, is to get an accurate diagnosis as to the cause of the colic. Colics caused by ulcers, impactions, foreign bodies, parasites, dehydration, infection, strangulation, torsion, volvulus and a host of other inciting factors can and usually are treated differently. On a percentage basis, 90% of colics respond to mineral oil and banamine. However it is dangerous to give banamine without an accurate diagnosis. Banamine can have strong analgesic effects and can therefore “cover up” the real problem by treating only the symptom of pain. A horse that is given banamine may remain pain free for several hours and sometimes up to twelve hours.

Colic is a dreaded disease and a word that instills great fear into many horse owners. There are many management regimens that can help decrease the number and severity of colics on a farm. These management tools include feeding the correct type of feed for the type of horse. An example is that of an athlete in heavy work that has a difficult time holding its weight. This horse needs a higher fat feed versus more of a high carbohydrate feed. The higher fat feed allows the horse to eat more calories per bite and thus allows the same horse to spend more time eating high quality roughage which is what the equine digestive system is meant to digest in the first place. Athletic horses, broodmares, stallions and growing horses all have different nutritional requirements as a group and as individuals. Meeting these requirements will greatly decrease the amount of colics on a farm and individual horse basis.

It was found in the patients large intestine (not Star’s, this is another horse) Star had sand and gas.

This merely allows the real problem to get worse in the meantime.

Sitting on an impaction colic for eight to twelve hours that has been given banamine can mean the difference between an inexpensive veterinary examination and treatment that includes mineral oil to break up the impaction versus a few days of IV fluid therapy and possibly even surgery.

Quick, accurate diagnosis that includes a physical exam of vital signs, rectal palpation to diagnose where and what the problem is, lab work including a PCV/total protein which indicates the degree of hydration and a blood lactate test which indicates if there is any tissue in the body that has a lack of oxygen such as a dying piece of intestine, goes a long way in coming out with a healthy happy horse. An accurate diagnosis not only requires a veterinary hospital that is on the ball but it requires and owner who pays attention to the small changes in their horse’s behavior.

Such was the case with April Kennington and her five year old American Quarter Horse, Star. Star is a top barrel racing horse and has great potential for the future because of quick action by April.

Star came to our hospital from about 2.5 hours away and arrived about 8pm. Star had become uncomfortable after she had been ridden late that same afternoon. Dr. Tami Voorhees admitted Star and performed all the usual diagnostic tests. It was determined that Star had an impaction in the pelvic flexure part of her large intestine. The impaction was thought to probably be sand and sand happens to be a common cause of impaction colic from horses in the Panama City area. It was decided to give her one gallon of mineral oil by stomach tube and to attempt to over hydrate her with intravenous fluids to flush out the sand impaction. Star was comfortable for about an hour and then continued to be painful and her GI motility was poor. An IV lidocaine drip was added to the IV fluids to decrease pain and to initiate GI contractility.

Calcium was added to the IV fluids to help with GI motility also. This treatment continued until 12am when it became clear that Star was becoming more painful and was not responding the medical therapy.

Dr. Voorhees and I consulted with the Kenningtons and it was decided

that surgery was Star’s best option. Star’s lab results had quickly deteriorated and so her prognosis at that point was not good.

Star was quickly taken to surgery. Along with Dr. Voorhees and I, Dr. Joe Fisch and Dr. Theresa Fenn were also called in for the surgery. As Dr. Voorhees had suspected, when I opened Star’s abdomen and examined her intestines, I found she had a sand impaction of the pelvic flexure and the impaction had also caused

a severe back up of gas in the cecum and other parts of the large intestine. A small incision was made into the cecum and large intestine and the gas was removed. The sand impaction was able to be broken down manually. Star recovered very well and was given IV fluids over the next few days to keep her well hydrated. She was given medications to prevent laminitis as her feet became warm and her digital pulses increased post-surgery.

As a result of an observant owner and a quick and accurate diagnosis and treatment, Star went home the following week in excellent health. Star and April look forward to many barrel racing competitions together in the future.

The key to managing equine colic is to make sure all the preventative measures are in place. If your horse is still unfortunate enough to have a bout of colic, make sure an equine veterinarian performs an examination very soon.

Depending on the type of colic, early and aggressive treatment gives you a much better chance at a successful outcome.

I am full bloom into College, already exams and lots of homework. I don’t think they realize I have three colts at home to ride. IHSRA Rodeo Queen

Whoa, what a journey it was competing at the 2012 National High School Finals Rodeo (NHSRA) in Rock Springs, Wyoming 2012. As the Indiana High School Rodeo Queen it was an honor competing with 42 other girls from all over the country including Australia and Canada and being a part of Team Indiana.

I arrived at the Sweet Water Complex on July 12 and instantly fell in love with Wyoming once again.

As a pervious qualifier I had been blessed with the opportunity to have competed in the NHSRA finals in Gillette, Wyoming 2011. This year I was even more blessed to compete not only in the 22 rifle shooting and goat tying events but the Queen Contest as well.

As a High School Rodeo Queen, competing with the other queens was non stop fun! It was exhilarating going from one thing to the next over the week in Wyoming competing for the title of National Rodeo High School Queen. The queens had to perform in horsemanship, take a written test, personal interview, modeling, impromptu questions, and four Grand Entries, while selling 50/50 tickets throughout the week. It was a busy time but one I will never forget so many memories and new friends were made.

If I had to pick my two favorite things in the Queen Contest it would have to be the test and the Grand Entries. I love taking the test because I want to know all the rules of the High School Rodeo, and what a better way than to quiz yourself. Taking the test over the NHSRA Rule Book was fun for me, I like it especially when someone at a rodeo comes up to me with a question about a rule and I am able to recite it.

Grand Entries are a blast, an adrenaline rush, to let your horse run as you smile and wave to everyone in the grand stands while one of your Indiana team members carries your State flag. Those 12 seconds of a Queen’s fame just makes me smile like all the kids in the grandstands. Another favorite part of the grand entries is getting my horse, Buddy, to look his best with all his glitter, while being in my monotone all one color shiny outfits. After all presentation is important representing your Indiana team.

Over the week I was in Rock Springs, Wyoming, competing with team Indiana I felt accomplished. Like the other team members we had worked hard to get to Nationals and this week was our time to shine and show off our talent. I would suggest to anyone that would even be interested in the Queen Contest to try out for the queen. You never know what you can achieve unless you try. Work hard, dream big and practice perfect! See you at the next rodeo.

IJRA was off and running in September with a busy start to the IJRA season. Our first 20122013 season rodeo was held in Bartonia, IN on September 8th and 9th at the 3 Bar J Ranch. The rain that was missing for most of the summer in Indiana decided to show up Friday night before the rodeo. Saturday’s rodeo was cancelled, but it gave the families a day to relax and visit with the down time. Thank you Marcia and Mike Johnson for hosting the rodeo and for the great Hog Roast that has become a great tradition at our Bartonia rodeo. Sunday’s ground dried out enough for the rodeo to start in the afternoon and for the points to begin accumulating for the rodeo season.

It’ll Be OK. (Right?)

I’ve said that plenty of times before, usually right after something happens that seems like a big “let-down” at the time. Maybe it was something as trivial as me knocking over a barrel in a barrel race or our horse getting banged around at the start of a quarter horse race....OR it could be have been something a little more serious like the loss of a job or even the loss of a loved one.

The more trivial incidents seem to take over our lives and we worry about the silly stuff until something serious comes along and rocks our world.

I mean, is the fact that I hit a barrel at the last barrel race really going to determine my destiny? Or if our horse doesn’t get a good start will life as we know it be over? Likely not....I mean, our pocketbook may be a little lighter heading home than we hoped, but if we didn’t have the money to play, then we shouldn’t have been there anyway.

Those somewhat trivial on a grand scale - day to day - events mold together to create our lives.

So if you look at the big picture, they really are important. Kind of like the perspectivebattles that win the war perspective. We need to know how to handle those every day incidents and how to get though them they way God would have us to in order to hold it together when something serious knocks us on our behind.

And it will happen.

How many people do you know who lose it at the drop of a hat? I like to think that I am not one of those people....but I can think of a few.

I know they can’t handle minor “situations,” so I’d hate to be near when “serious” knocks on their door.

What we all need to realize is that “It will be OK.” What I mean by that is this: God is still God and He is in control. Now, if you already have a relationship with Him, you should kow that. If you’re working at getting closer to Him, then in your heart you already know that it’s all gonna be OK. If you already know Him, then you know it won’t be easy all of the time, but you know there is a peace that comes from Him that trumps any “situation” that the devil can thow at you.

The hard part to wrap my head around is that everything I am going through while I am here on earth is making me stronger, making

me into the person that God wants me to be.

Sometimes it takes something trivial in my day to day path happening over and over until I “get it” - like little quizzes on my way to the test - to prepare me for something serious that’s coming my way. If I can make my way though the quiz, then the test will be easier.

What is scary for me is the thought of not having that peace that comes from knowing that God is on my side. I am so thankful that I already know Him. It is the best relationship that I have....and I love my husband.

God is always there for me, whthre I acknowledge Him or not. He is guiding me, and sometimes challenging me to be better... to be stronger....to be braver....to be bolder all the while He is right there with me in the background letting me know “It’ll be OK....I am here.”

Romans 8: 27-31 27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.30 Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.31 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?

I love that last verse.....

Rocklane Heads Passero-Trained Exacta in Don K. Series

Hoosier Park Press Release - Trainer Michael Passero made a successful

showing in the third round of the $30,000 Don K. Memorial Starter Handicap Series at Hoosier Park Racing & Casino on Sept. 12 as his entry in the evening’s featured event finished first and second.

Rocklane once again successfully handled a stretch out from six furlongs to a mile to take home top honors with Daniel Coa in the irons.

Rocklane, a Littleexpectations gelding, was sent off as the third betting choice at 5-2 along with stablemate Only Win in a well-matched five horse field.

Rocklane broke from the inside and secured a stalking position, tracking in fifth and then fourth through opening fractions of :24.75 and :48.61 set by Tahquemenon and Djalma Macedo. Part’N Parcel, a winner in the first round of the Don K. series, was stalking the pace while racing three wide on the backstretch while the bettors’ choice, Victory Notion and Leandro Goncalves, raced four wide in fifth. Tahquemenon and pace-pressing Only Win continued to trade back and forth for the lead down the backside as the field reached the third station in 1:13.07, but both Rocklane and Part’N Parcel made moves on the outside to reach contention. As the field negotiated the final turn, it appeared to be anyone’s race. Only Win was able to take a short a lead but was quickly joined on the outside by Victory Notion as they dueled down the stretch. Coa angled Rocklane off the turn only to be bumped from both sides in midstretch.

Once he had a clear shot, Rocklane powered to the front to win by one half of a length in front of Only Win who was a game second.

Part’N Parcel held on for the third place finish. Rocklane covered the one mile contest in 1:38.58 over a track rated fast and returned $7.40

Indiana Derby Attracts Thirty-Four Nominees

Nominations for the 18th running of the Indiana Derby at Hoosier Park Racing & Casino closed on Wednesday, Sept. 19 with 34 three-yearold colts included in the lineup. Indiana’s signature Thoroughbred race has created a stop for several of the top three-year-olds in the nation searching for a final prep en route to the Breeders’ Cup. Just as it has in years past, the 18th edition of Hoosier Park’s signature event has attracted some of the top three-year-olds in the country.

Bob Baffert is no stranger to the Indiana Derby winner’s circle as he boasts two wins in the history of the race and looks to take aim at his third victory with the Giant’s Causeway colt, Fed Biz. With two wins in two starts this season, Fed Biz returned to the races after an eight month layoff to win the $100,000 El Cajon Stakes at Del Mar on Aug. 31. The three-year-old colt has won three of four lifetime starts while posting speed ratings over 100 in each and bankrolling $131,000.

Indiana Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association - ITOBA NEWS Gorder recently teamed up with Hoosier Park’s leading jockey, Leandro Goncalves, to capture the colt’s third win of the season as he drew off and won the nine furlong contest by five lengths. Owned by Bourbon Lane Stable and Wayne Lynn, Bourbon Courage also posted a runnerup finish in the West Virginia Derby (gr. II) Aug. 4 at Mountaineer Casino Racetrack & Resort.

Trainers D. Wayne Lukas, Dale Romans, Steve Asmussen, and H. Graham Motion have also nominated horses for the race.

Once again, the Grade II $500,000 Indiana Derby will highlight the 2012 Thoroughbred season at Hoosier Park Racing & Casino and is placed in its customary first Saturday in October slot, landing on Saturday, Oct. 6th. As in 2011, the race pushes purses for the entire day over the $1 million mark. With 10 stakes races slated on the afternoon card, the day will also mark the richest day ever for Thoroughbred racing in the state of Indiana.

Joining the Indiana Derby will be the Grade II $200,000-added Indiana Oaks, the $100,000-added Michael G Schaefer Memorial Mile, and the $100,000-added Mari Hulman George stakes. Racing begins Indiana Derby day at 12:30 p.m. EST.

Babbitt, McNaught Honored By Indiana Horse Racing Industry

Hoosier Park Racing & Casino held a special day at the races on Saturday, Sept. 22 as they honored former chair of the Indiana Horse Racing Commission, Sarah McNaught, and former outside counsel to the Indiana Horse Racing Commission, Robin Babbitt, for their many years of service and leadership to the Indiana horse racing industry.

McNaught was appointed chair of the Indiana Horse Racing Commission by Governor Mitch Daniels in 2005. During her time with the commission, McNaught brought strong and principled leadership, helping make the state of Indiana a leader in the horse racing industry.

The recipient of the prestigious Joan Pew Award from the Association of Racing Commissioners International, McNaught’s dedication to Indiana horse racing has made her a steward of the industry and her efforts will continue to be seen for years to come.

Babbitt served as outside counsel to the Indiana Horse Racing Commission since 1993 and was recognized for his many years of service to the Indiana horse racing industry. Babbitt’s expertise in the field of law benefited Indiana horse racing by helping it navigate from inception, nearly 20 years ago, to a $1 billion a year industry, employing thousands throughout the state.

“Both Robin and Sarah have helped guide the sport of horse racing in Indiana to where it stands today, a leader on a national level.

Their commitment to the Indiana Horse Racing Commission and the entire horse racing industry has been exceptional,” said Rod Ratcliff, Centaur’s CEO and chairman, during the winner’s circle presentation.

“From the entire Indiana horse racing industry, we thank you both for your many years of commendable service and leadership.”

Race 4 on the afternoon’s card was dedicated to Robin Babbitt while race 5 was dedicated to Sarah McNaught. Steve Cole of Westfield, Indiana correctly identified our cowgirl as Amy Youngblood.

Amy was riding a horse named Crotonettes Jaguar and the year was eitehr 1983 or 1984. Most of you will recognize Amy’s name these days as the veterinanrian at Southern Indiana Equine. Amy also stands several AQHA stallions at her facility and is very involved in the Indiana Quarter Horse Racing program. She also still enjoys barrel racing when she can fit in the time.
