LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
I
’ll admit it, last month I got a little emotional with my letter. A few of you noticed and let me know that you appreciated my thoughts via email or phone call. Thank you to those who shared their thoughts with me:)
On to this month....not too much sentiment or emotion, just a little sadness to see the leaves starting to change and the fields around us being harvested. I love the autumn...but always dread the cold months that follow. I do look forward to bonfires with family and friends as well as going back indoors for most of the barrel racing we’ll do over the next several months. I also love the holidays and even though I am a last minute Christmas shopper, I still love the Christmas season. (It will only be a little over two months away by the time you read this!) Speaking of Christmas. Have you started your Christmas shopping yet? Like I said, I’m not much on getting an early start, but for those of you that are....the Quarter Horse Congress is a great place to shop for your horsey friends. Maybe I’ll see you there and you can convince me to try it this year! Or there is the QHRAI Speed Sale....I’m hoping Vick does his shopping for me there! (Hint, Hint!) This months issue includes some great coverage from the Myers Performance Horse Prospect Sale, the Indiana Barrel Racing Futurity and also the latest IBRA News.
Some of you are reading this during the IBRA Nationals....if that’s the case, we hope you enjoy what you see and that you take advantage of the IBRA’s discounted subscription rate for members. Club Foot and Barrel Racing CowgirlLindz Posted 2013-09-10 9:24 PM (#6820847) Member Posts: 29 My new horse as a slight club foot (front right). I missed it and so did my vet check (passed everything with flying colors - no x-rays tho)! My natural trimmer says its really nit picking to say its a club. His hoof care has been inconsistent also (I’ve only had him for just over a month). He is a little funny turning towards the club (right) but I’m just starting him so I’m hoping it will improve with training. We haven’t even started lope work yet. Anyone have experience with club foot and/or barrel racing them? BBrewster Location: Texas I had a mare with a slight club foot on front right - was never a problem. One of the best rodeo horses I’ve ever owned... it never slowed her down... she never took a lame step. Had to keep her trimmed regular though - when I was hauling her she was shod every 4 weeks but I think that was more for me then her lol... she just seemed like she broke over better when she was fresh shod...had her 15 years...

I would bet working to the right is a training/ stiffness issue and has nothing to do with his feet. Ive seen horses with the worst feet and legs go on to be great horses. And I have seen the most beautiful, correct horses make nothing more than a pretty ride. She loves her job, and has been running hard for 11 years now. She is 15, and is starting to show some arthritis in front leg joints. She may not last much longer, but she sure had her years. shilohorse Veteran Posts: 161 I have a great horse with a slight club he is 1d probably the best horse I have ever owned- the only thing I can say is be sure and keep toe backed up soles get thin if toe gets to long and I usually go about 4 weeks never ever over 5 weeks

I’m planning on keeping him barefoot. I’m hoping the funny turning towards the right (towards the club) is just stiffness/lack of work like was said. I have no problem buying adult horses who are clubbed and we’ve had several who stayed sound all through their careers with them. With the baby since she was born here and we saw it, we felt the obligation to fix it. News Horsemen Welcome Expanded Shedrow at Indiana Downs SHELBYVILLE, IN.Indiana Downs opened two new barns to horsemen Sunday night. As part of an agreement, Centaur Gaming rolled out a plan to expand stall space on the property. The first phase of the construction project saw the first two of four stables reach official completion earlier this month and two more barns are scheduled for construction prior to the 2014 meet. Many horsemen have been outspoken in support of the plan.
AQHA will seek a stay of the enforcement of such judgment pending the outcome of the appellate process. If a stay is granted, the registration of clones and their offspring will be put on hold until the appellate process is completed. Unless and until a stay is granted or AQHA prevails on appeal, the court-mandated rules regarding the registration of clones and their offspring are being incorporated into AQHA’s rules of registration. The court-mandated rules require new and significant computer programming with respect to AQHA’s data bases. AQHA, in the normal course of business, will develop such programming that is necessary to integrate clones and offspring into such data bases. In the near future, AQHA will post the court-mandated rules, the new forms to be used to register clones and a summary of the requirements mandated by the court rules to register a cloned horse produced through somatic cell nuclear transfer. “This is a great thing for the sport in our state,” said owner-trainer Marvin Johnson. “The increased stall space allows horsemen to establish roots in Indiana. Accommodations are important when choosing a track and these are top notch.” The stables have been labeled as “state-of-the-art” and are capable of housing one hundred and fifty-two horses among them. The twelve foot square stalls offer increased space, ventilation, and temperature controlled water. Once the construction project is complete Indiana Downs will have increased capacity by fifty percent. Centaur Gaming President and COO Jim Brown met with the press earlier this month in a ribbon cutting ceremony. “The barn completion makes a powerful statement in terms of Centaur’s promises made and promises kept,” he said. “This marks a major step forward for Indiana racing as we continue to emerge as a national force in horse racing.”
AQHA Cloning Lawsuit Update The American Quarter Horse Association, September 23, 2013 - Today, AQHA filed its Notice of Appeal, which will begin the appellate process as the case heads to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit in New Orleans. As previously announced, on August 22, 2013, the judge in the cloning lawsuit issued a final judgment ordering AQHA to immediately begin registering clones and their offspring. “AQHA strongly believes in the right of our members and directors to make such regulation decisions on their own,” said AQHA Executive Vice President Don Treadway Jr. “We will continue to take any and all necessary legal steps to fight for our members’ rights to determine the rules that govern our Association.”

The horsewoman did the groundwork before reaching out to trainer Debbie Stephens for help. “His training has been a joint effort,” Megan remarked. “He comes home with me and I keep him schooled when Debbie is busy at the horse shows in Lexington. But Debbie shows him, and she has been so generous with her time and her talent. She’s put so much into him. This is the third Thoroughbred I’ve brought to her, and she has been amazing with each one. I can’t thank her enough.”

They focus not just on keeping the horses sound to race, but on providing them with longevity, so they can have careers after the track. The TAKE2 Second Career Thoroughbred Program, created by the New York Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association, New York Racing Association and New York Thoroughbred Breeders Inc., offered Sterling the perfect venue for showing off his new skills. In its second year, TAKE2 was expanded from eight shows in three states in 2012 to more than 50 shows in 18 states for 2013. The classes are designed as a launching pad for retired racehorses just getting started in the show ring.
His stellar performances at the Kentucky National brought Sterling’s point total for the year to 82. Tied for second in the TAKE2 Second Career Thoroughbred Jumper standings were Catherine Cullen’s Isabella G. and Carol Traver’s Incanto, who ended the season with 50 points apiece. As the High-Score Thoroughbred Jumper, Sterling was awarded $1,500 in prize money, a dress sheet and the tricolor high-score sash.
“I’m thrilled about TAKE2,” Megan said. “It’s wonderful that someone took the time and effort to get Thoroughbred classes back into the Alevel show circuit. TAKE2 has taken the reins to promote the return of the Thoroughbred to the show ring at this level. I hope more people will see that Thoroughbreds can do this, and that you can make a little money and have a good time with them.”
Now eight, Sterling was a solid racehorse, making 35 starts and winning seven races under his Jockey Club name, Roman Silver. When he showed signs of slowing down, Megan’s husband, Dr. Foster Northrop, stepped in to find him a new career.
She added, “The three-day eventers know these horses work for them. TAKE2 will help encourage the show jumpers and the professional hunter people to take a chance on them. You don’t have to make a large investment to get a Thoroughbred off the track. It takes a very, very small investment and a bit of time and attention—it’s a great way to have a nice horse in your barn.”
Lexington, Ky…- Septembe 23, 2013 Demonstrating just what retired racehorses can do, Sterling captured first- and second-place finishes in the TAKE2 Jumper classes at the Kentucky National Horse Show last week, surging to the lead in the last event on the program’s schedule to earn the TAKE2 High-Score Thoroughbred Jumper Award for 2013.
“My husband is a vet, he works primarily on racehorses at Churchill Downs and Keeneland, and at Palm Meadows in Florida in the winter, but he also cares for show horses when time allows it,” Megan explained. “A colleague knew about this horse—he’d done well at the track, but he started racing at lower levels. It was time to find him something else to do.” The initial plan was to sell him as a show horse prospect. There were no takers, so he joined the small Northrop string. “My background is three-day eventing, so I’ve re-schooled Thoroughbreds almost all of my riding career,” Megan said. “Now that I’m married and have three small children, I concentrate on getting them started off the track, and finding the discipline that best suits them, whether it’s fox hunting or eventing or jumping. I work with a couple of young horses at a time on our farm [outside of Louisville], and I really enjoy it.” Sterling adapted easily to the change in lifestyle. “He needed a little time off, so we turned him out and gave him a chance to just be a horse, then started light work with him,” Megan said. “He didn’t go into full training until just this past winter, but he needed to be back at work. Thoroughbreds really like to have a job.”
New York Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association President Rick Violette Jr., who spearheaded the creation of the TAKE2 program, agrees. “The whole idea behind TAKE2 was to show people that retired racehorses are a valuable commodity,” Violette said. “Sterling is a prime example. He raced until he was six and made 35 starts, but still had so much left to give when he left the track. And he is no exception. The two horses that tied for second in the standings, Isabella G. and Incanto, made more than 20 starts each. Thoroughbreds are born athletes, and they are ideally suited to second careers as hunters and jumpers. TAKE2 is helping to get that message out there.” About TAKE2…The New York Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association (NYTHA) partnered with the New York Racing Association (NYRA) and the New York Thoroughbred Breeders Inc. (NYTB) in 2012 to establish the TAKE2 Second Career Thoroughbred Program. Open to raced and unraced Thoroughbreds eligible to be registered with The Jockey Club, the program offered prize money in restricted hunter and jumper classes at more than 50 A- and AA-rated horse shows in 18 states and 10 of the 12 U.S. Equestrian Federation zones this year. The program highlights the success of Thoroughbreds as show horses, thereby creating more opportunities for retiring racehorses in need of second careers. The program is supported by Thoroughbred organizations across the U.S.

Hello Everyone, As you read this you may very well be sitting at our 2013 National Finals or watching it on the webcast. If you are at our Finals thank you for coming and good luck! If you were not able to make it, we hope to see you here next year. Please make sure to check out the Horse Resource next month see who will be crowned our 2013 IBRA National Champions! We are very excited to announce some changes that we have made to our upcoming Preferred Show roster. In this issue you will find copies of show bills for our January Futurity hosted at the TN Miller Coliseum (Murfreesboro TN) and our March Futurity hosted at Circle G Arena in Lewisburg, OH. Both of these shows feature LOWERED STALL PRICES and we have INCREASED THE ADDED MONEY for the Open class in March. Don’t forget that we have NO LATE FEES for OPEN, YOUTH AND MASTERS CLASESS. Perhaps even more exciting is the Revival of our IBRA Match Race! This year’s match race should be more attractive to exhibitors than ever. We have lowered the stall, hook up and processing prices and we have dropped late fees and tie-out fees. While trying to make a decision where to have the 2013 National Finals, we decided to postpone having the Match Race for the 2013 Season. C Bar C has been a great location for the Match Race; however we felt that it was even more suitable for the National Finals.
Match Race, Chuck Wathen and JA Hot Dash, collected an additional $462. Darrin Hornberger ran the second fastest time collecting $278 and Ellen Ellis raked in $185 for the third fastest time. All this for a $20 entry fee! Although the race was cancelled in 2011 due to concerns of EHV at the time, the Match Race returned in 2012 with another successful payout. The “Ghost Riders” won $450 each. Brian Carman won an additional $375 for running the fastest time of the Match Race, Brad Shirey earned an addition $225 for second and Clint Van $150 placing third. Again, all this was made with a $20 entry fee. I think that one of the best parts about the Match Race is that it offers an opportunity for riders and horses of all skill and talent level to receive the recognition they deserve. In a team environment the lower division rider can earn more points and therefore more money for his/her team than the 1D rider! It creates a sense of camaraderie that is not often found in our sport and it makes for a great show to watch. We welcome you all to get your teams together and run with us in April! As always the IBRA is striving to let you know how important you are to us. We are trying to make things cheaper for everyone while increasing you benefits. Thanks to some of our new sponsors such Jaco Tack, Head West Outfitters, Best Ever Pads and Oxygen we are heading in a great direction.
In looking for a new home for the Match Race, we were trying to find a central location where we could keep the show that would also allow us to keep our prices fair. The Central KY Ag Center happened to be a great fit! The facility has ample stalls. There are also electric hook ups and plenty of elbow room for those who wish to run a generator. One message I would like to convey this year to the Indiana members is that it is truly humbling to be privileged to get to work with all of you. I would like to thank the IBRA for giving me the opportunity of becoming the MD State Director. I have two representatives, Tammy Dugan and Stevie Divelbiss that I would like to thank for their help and support. We are planning our 2014 Show Schedule; we are looking for additional arenas throughout the State of Maryland to hold IBRA barrel shows. Our plans are to expand the great sport of IBRA Barrel racing throughout the whole state of MD & co approve some shows with our surrounding states. We are getting a lot of support from other State Directors and our members. We are planning to have a nice award program for our members for the new show year. As for our Indiana state show ---WOW ---is all I can say! The total state show entries were 1,542 and the total payout was $27,191.90. Indiana gave out over $12,000 in state show prizes. And that didn’t include yearend awards totaling over $18,000 that were given out on Saturday night to our Indiana Top Dogs.

Looking back at the 2013 season I can say we had good family fun, met new people, worked together to raise money for awards and enjoyed what we love to do, barrel racing. Whether it was a one day show or a long weekend we will have those memories for a lifetime. Along the way we win a little money, earn points and look forward to the Year End Awards. The crowning achievement is qualifying for the National Finals. Congratulations to everyone who is a State Qualifier or Top Dog for Virginia. The 2013 season has come to end only to start right back up in August for the 2014 season and our membership continues to raise along with new show approvals for the upcoming year. Our members are already working on the 2014 Finals added money by hosting a Food Stand at the October 19th & 20th Barrel Race at Showtime Arena. Last season they raised $1800 and already have $90 from a Fantasy Barrel Race. Our goal is $2000 and as great as this membership is to work with it should be no problem. Teams will consist of 5 different IBRA Members. Team entry fee is $100 pre-entered ($20 per team member) or $150 day of show ($30 per member) -100% Payback You may be on more than one team if you are running more than one horse. You may not run two horses on the same team. You may not enter the same horse for multiple teams. There will be a Long Go run in conjunction with the $10,000 Guaranteed that will determine the top 10 teams to come back for the Match Race Finals on Sunday. The Top 10 Teams to come back on Sunday will be determined on a point system based on the $10,000 Guaranteed results. 1st place in each division will receive 20 points, 2nd place 19, 3rd place 18 and so on down to 20th place which will receive 1 point. Your 5 team members points will be added together and the top 10 teams with the highest amount of points will advance to the finals. Ex: If you have one team member win a division and the other 4 hit barrels or fall below the top 20 mark in any division then you would have 20 total points for your team. Payback: 100% of the entry fees plus $2,000 added. 75% of the total purse will be split between the winning team. The remaining 25% will be paid out to the 3 fastest times of the finals paid 50%, 30%, 20%. Example: If there are 40 teams X 100 EF= $4,000 + $2,000 added = $6,000 purse. 75% is $4,500 split between winning team ($900 each) 25% is $1,500 paid to 3 fastest times. $750 to the fastest, $450 to second, $300 to third.

Held east of Spearfish, South Dakota at the Seven Down Arenas, the sale featured 62 head of not only their own ranch-raised prospects but also a select offering from guest consignors.

Guys Best Bet, consigned by Bill & Deb Myers and sired by their senior sire Frenchmans Guy, drew considerable interest prior to the sale and during the preview. Leaving the ring after active bidding on a final bid of $56,000 from Harry LaToush from Kansas, the 2011 sorrel mare is out of Addicted To Cash, a proven producing full sister to Leading Sire Dash For Perks and she has produced race winners of $96,000. Also foaled in 2011 was Guys Sangria, a sorrel mare again sired by Frenchmans Guy and out of the AAA and AAA Stakes Producer Hot Brandi N Wine – an earner of $14,576 on the track. This Guyz A Leader, a 2011 palomino gelding brought a bid of $26,000 from Scott Gray from Canada. By Frenchmans Guy, he is out of Bugs Special Leader si 94, a Stakes Placed Winner on the track. One of the high sellers at the 2013 Sale was a weanling filly - Flits French Blondie. Out of an own daughter of Fire Water Flit and sired by Frenchmans Guy, the well-balanced palomino filly was consigned by Linda Rittberger and attracted a bid of $33,000 from Ron Young from South Dakota. The result of a donated fee and embryo, 100% of the proceeds will be donated to the Lone Tree Bible Ranch in Wyoming. High selling two-year-old stallion was Guys Fame, a palomino stallion sired by Frenchmans Guy and out of Disarray si 89, a daughter of Dash Ta Fame si 113. The Frenchmans Guy/Dash Ta Fame cross has proven to be stellar. Guys Fame is a full brother to the Myers 2009 High Seller Guys Famous Girl, a two-time slot race champion, multiple futurity finalist in 2011 and the Nation’s #1 Money Earning Barrel Horse of the Year – All Ages-All Divisions with earnings of $125,000+. He drew a final bid of $32,500 from Ed Pfaff, a buyer from Wisconsin.
High Selling yearling stallion, Dot Com Guy, is a 2012 sorrel also sired by Frenchmans Guy and out of Speed Dot Com, a AAA runner sired by Sixarun si 106. Having the final bid of $21,000 was Sitnal Livestock, Travis and Amy Lantis from Spearfish, South Dakota. He came from the breeding program of long time consignors Lance Robinson & Max Anderson from Utah. French Bouquet, a 2012 gray mare sired by Frenchmans Guy and out of Rimes Bouquet si 101, was the high selling yearling mare and was consigned by Robert & DelRae Driggers, Berino, New Mexico. She left the ring at $24,000 from Mike Hays from Louisiana.

As usual, this month has been interesting most of them are around here. The lady of the house decided that we needed to add some new critters to the “collection.” They are supposed to help reduce the mouse population. You guessed it - we got cats.
I Am NOT A Cat! And it’s pretty obvious to me and the rest of the original crew that they do not like dogs.
At least I would have thought they wouldn’t believe such nonsense. Until....
I wanted to ask the lady if she had the same sort of talk with the kitties. It should have went something like this:
I was walking out of the barn a couple of days ago, minding my own business...when all of a sudden, a giant hunk of packaged up dried grass fell from the sky and almost crushed me. Wow! I took a roll and had to catch my breath. The people were freaking out...they seemed pretty concerned about me (of course.) These giant hunks of grass (they called it hay) come falling from that section of the sky right in front of the barn at least a couple times a day.... this time I was caught off guard.
“Alright, kitties, there are doggies that live here and they have lived here longer than you. I have told the doggies I expect them to be nice to you.... so, kitties, you are expected to be nice to the doggies. That means, no hissing, swatting, biting, scratching or arched back threats.” I mean, I know Halloween is right around the corner and all, but these are some SCARY cats!
Now, I’ve been around cats before and have been civil on - most - of those occasions. Since these new cats are now considered part of the “crew” around here, the lady of the house thought it was necessary to give us dogs a lecture on how to treat them. It went something like this: “Alright, doggies, these kitties are now part of the family....blah, blah, blah.....no chasing, stalking, scaring or chewing on the new kitties.” What does that leave for us to do with them for “quality time?” (Just kidding...) The lady forgot to mention to us that most of these “kitties” that she rescued and relocated to our lovely barn were mostly WILD....I mean DOUBLE YOU - EYE - ELL -DEE.....WILD.
BUT, I do like living here, so I guess I’ll just stay out of their way and suppress my natural instinct to.....well never mind.....I’ll behave. With all the new cats running around here, we had one that seemed a little under the weather....of course it was the one that is actually tame and civil to us dogs. She didn’t look well and the lady had to give her medicine and I heard the people talking about her using up a few of her “nine lives.” What???? Cats get nine lives? Anyway - the cat is doing much better now and she is still the only friendly one of the bunch. But this whole “nine lives” thing really had me thinking. First of all, is it really true? I don’t think so. Second of all, do the people really believe it’s true? Surely not.
The lady was looking me over and making sure I was ok (I was fine, by the way), and then she said something about me being like a cat and using up some of my “lives.” (Remember the worming incident? And I’ve been in some close calls with some horse hooves too.....) But, come on!! Really? I am NOT a cat! I know I like to scratch my back on the lady’s foot when she has her leg crossed and hanging at just the right height....and I do like to hunt mice....but I am sure that I am NOT a cat! I am also sure that I don’t have “nine lives” and neither do cats! Crazy people. Maybe I should look this stuff up on Google. I’ve taken a break from the internet lately - the weather has been really nice and trying to bond with cats is kind of time consuming. Anyway, until next month,

Summer Huff Rides Fletch N Flo to 39th Annual Indiana Barrel Futurity Championship September 6-8, 2013 Hoosier Horse Park - Edinburgh, IN This year’s Annual Indiana Barrel Racing Futurity brought some beautiful weather as well as some tough competition to Edinburgh, Indiana’s Hoosier Horse Park.

Futurity Champion Summer Huff riding Fletch N Flo FUTURITY
The weekend started off with a tough Friday night of barrel racing. The 4D barrel race was won by last year’s Futurity Champion, Chris Coffey of Glasgow, Kentucky. Chris rode his well accomplished mount, Streaking Romance, to best the field of 178 and pocket almost $500. The 2D was won by Leslie Willis riding Time Well Traveled, the 3D by Marcia Fetterhoff with CRMF Firewater Chic and the 4D by Sue Market riding Bugs and Butterflys.
Fastest Futurity Time
The first go of the 41 con- Leslie Willis testant field futurity was dominated by Leslie Willis of South Carolina. She placed first and second on her horses Washita Carver and Incendiary Ivory, respectively, and pocketed over $1,700 for her efforts. With her first place finish she also clocked a 15.128 to be awarded the “Terry Van Volkenburgh Award” for the fastest time of the futurity. Kelly Bowser (Ohio) and his 2013 futurity stand-out, Evidence of Arson were close behind Leslie in third as was Summer Huff of Florida riding Fletch N Flo to claim fourth in the first go. The 2D winner was Marne Loosenort (KY) riding VF Fame N Poverty, the pair earned $447. The second go of the futurity found Summer Huff at the top of the leader board. She and her mount shut the clock off at a 15.256 and took hom close to $1,000 for the win. Todd Holder riding Famously French and Bob Jaqua aboard Serve It Chilled were second and third. Topping the 2D of the second go was Keith Tempel (IN) riding Bytheliteofthemoon.
Derby Champion, Friday & Saturday 4D Champ Chris Coffey riding Streaking Romance Summer Huff and Fletch N Flo’s consisent performances proved to be fast enough to earn the pair the 2013 Indiana Barrel Racing Championship. The title earned them an additional $1,239 to bring the team’s futurity winnings for the weekend to $2,668.
SATURDAY YOUTH 3D
After the Futurity on Saturday morning, it was time for the youngsters to turn and burn. The youth class had 46 competitors to take a shot at the top spot and when the dust settled, it was a tie for first place, with second place only one thousandth of a second behind. Cia Green riding Super and Gracie Conway riding Butler Did It tied for the top spot and the trophy buckle, followed closely by Morgan henning and Jheros Dashing Lady. The 2D was won by Kayleigh Crane riding Diamond Stay and the 3D was won by Darrion Smith with Rosie. The trophy buckle held double meaning to Gracie Conway. This year’s buckle was was the first to be donated in memory of her Great Grandpa, Jim “Otis” Pitcock, who passed away earlier this year.

The Open 4D offered plenty of excitement and again found Chris Coffey and Streaking Romance leading the way with a 14.797. Darrin Hornberger and Kelly Bowser rounded out the top three. Rhoda Hall took Sharp and Sassy to the 2D win while Baylee Cissell led the 3D and Nate Skaggs claimed the 4D. This marks the fifth year of our Certified Indiana Bred program, which is sponsored by the Quarter Horse Racing Association of Indiana. The program offered bonus money for the highest placing race horse that had been certified through the State of Indiana. The Futurity winner was Bob Jaqua of Noblesville, Indiana riding Serve it Chilled - by Chilled Corona. In the Open class Bob’s wife, Dianna Jaqua was the first place winner of the bonus money, riding a Twaynas Dash bred horse, HQH A Dash of Sugar.

news Multiple Stakes Winner Finche Wins Bradford at Indiana Downs Saturday SHELBYVILLE, IN—SEPTEMBER 21, 2013—Larry Abney and Chris Sheehy's Finche rolled to another stakes win Saturday in the $59,120 Bradford Stakes at Indiana Downs. Saddled by Abney and ridden by Oscar Delgado, the 8-year-old son of leading sire Tres Seis completed the 400 yards in a quick :19.640 seconds, a 110 speed index. The $32,516 winner's purse boosted his career earnings mark to more than $256,000. The graded stakes winning Oklahoma-bred gelding, out of Doctor Prospector by Bully Bullion, has an 8-7-1 record from 21 career starts. Streaked Face Bay put in a late rally to finish half-alength off the winner for owner Francisco Ramos and trainer Raul Gonzalez. Silence and Solitude
R
ecently, I was able to enjoy a great weekend of conversation with new acquaintances and a cookout with family and friends. At some point in the festivities, I felt like I’d used up all my words. My brain continued to spin, but the words didn’t come to express them.
I’ve learned more about me in solitude than I’ve ever learned from anyone. In the silence, I hear my soul whisper to me and hear the voice of God most clearly. The insight of others into my life has proved beneficial, but the introspection of my life in the mirror has changed me forever. I see myself most clearly when it is me and silence.
There is no question I prefer silence and solitude over noise and conversation. Yes, I’m a loner, but I desire companionship. Yes, I do enjoy meaningful conversation, but it is the benefit of solitude which I need.
My advice - don’t get too busy to enjoy the moments in which we can appreciate all the beauty God created. I know most of you are “horse people”, so ask yourself when the last time you sat in the pasture and watched your horses. I mean just watched!
I’ve learned more about people in silence than I have ever learned in conversation. Conversation is the beginning, but it’s in the silence, which follows, the process of learning begins. When we observe the behavior of the person and the consistency of their “talk with their walk” we learn the most about their character. I’ve learned more about the world around me and the Creator in silence than I’ve ever learned in the classroom. Education makes us educated, not necessarily wise. In His creation, God has taught me about the world around me. The same creation has taught me about God and His love for me. What I’ve learned has increased my wisdom. I have a long way to go, but I’m making progress.
God created these incredible animals in His pleasure and for our enjoyment. They are truly amazing. In my mind, there is nothing better than a cool fall evening sitting. That’s right, doing nothing but sitting. It’s easy to say “I’m too busy”, but are we really so busy we can’t take a few minutes to reflect on everything we have been given? I hope and pray for you and for me we are never too busy to sit, watch, appreciate and say “Thank you, God!”

I have a question concerning the best ways to protect my horse’s legs when running barrels. I see a lot of people using polo wraps and was curious if you recommend polo wraps or one of the latest combination/ splint/impact boots that are available in the market. I personally am using Professional’s Choice© on my horse’s legs, but want to be sure this is the best choice. Thanks for your time, Amy Dear Amy, Boots and bandages may help protect a horse’s legs and provide some support, but they are not replacements for good conditioning. Depending on what a horse must do for a living, leg wraps, interference boots, skid boots, and splint boots may have practical application for horses with problems relating to interference that may be caused by certain movements such as turning a barrel. Protective leg gear is functionally used for two purposes--protection from trauma and to support lower leg structures. Some horses tend to traumatize themselves by the interference of one limb hitting another, especially when fatigued. This can easily happen when running barrels after a few runs. Boots and wraps can also do harm. It is important to remove the boots at intervals to ensure that dirt and debris have not collected between the boot and the skin, and that there are no rub issues. Also a horse can develop subtle tendonitis that might go unnoticed on a leg with boots or wraps, whereas swelling might be noticeable if the boot is removed. Proper fit, application, and adjustment with periodic rechecking can minimize these problems. The materials used in protective gear have improved over the years. Riders no longer have to depend on leather or canvas materials that could be abrasive. Synthetic materials that are light, can breathe and are easily attached by Velcro seem to work well. They are less likely to rub or chafe and/or contribute to fatigue. Plastic or rubber is used for protective gear such as bell boots for similar reasons. The attempt of all of these devices is to protect and support the tendons, ligaments, and joints, especially from hyperextension injuries brought on by fatigue. The intent is to prevent the performance injuries to these structures, as, for example, suspensory desmitis, bowed tendons, fractures, osteoarthritis, and synovitis. The intent is also to prevent diseases related to poor conformation, such as interference injuries, splints and sesamoid bone injury. But again, there is not better protection for the supporting structures of a horse’s leg than proper conditioning.

Ask the Vet with Dr. Steve Fisch, DVM A common procedure for many equestrian disciplines is the use of polo bandages or wraps placed on all four limbs during exercise. Polo wraps do not support the leg. They give some protection against trauma, but less than some of the boots. Polo wraps provide external padding that appears to give support to internal tissues. Different kinds of bandages have been used for decades in veterinary medicine to support the tissues of the limb following soft tissue or orthopedic injury by reducing edema or fluid swelling. Whether these bandages help normal horses performing at less than maximum potential is questionable. Also bandages placed too loosely are ineffective and those that are placed too tightly can actually damage the structures they are supposed to be supporting. Both boots and polo wraps can increase the temperature of the supporting structures because heat isn’t allowed to dissipate as easily as is the case of an unwrapped or unbooted leg. Therefore cold hosing the legs after removing wraps if the horse has worked hard is recommended, especially when using sports medicine boots.

One reason many sports boots are used is to prevent excessive concussion. The soft tissue structures and blood circulation of the hooves themselves do a good deal to absorb concussion to the limb. The lower limb joints also contribute to concussion damping, but at a cost. One area of concern is that of hyperextension of the fetlock joints as the horse loads the limb. Support boots supposedly provide stiffness to the lower leg to reduce hyperextension on the fetlock joints. The ability of the boot to prevent

hyperextension of the fetlock is dependent upon the materials used in construction of the boot. Greater restriction on hyperextension is obtained with materials that are thicker and more elastic. The amount of fetlock extension determines the amount of strain on the superficial digital flexor tendon and suspensory ligament. Injuries to these structures most often occur as repetitive strain injuries due to loading of the limb during locomotion. By reducing fetlock extension, there is less likelihood of repetitive strain injury. During rehabilitation, it’s particularly useful to control fetlock extension to prevent re-injury. Other methods, such as conditioning, training, balanced trimming, and shoeing hold greater promise to avoid hyperextension injuries than do artificial devices. More often than not we see horses with hyperextension injuries that also have long toes and under run heels. Proper shoeing and trimming goes a long way toward preventing injuries. However the single greatest protection against fetlock hyperextension and flexor tendon/suspensory injuries is the minimization of fatigue through conditioning. Conditioning takes time. Like all things that are worthwhile, there is no easy magic bullet for conditioning.

Also congrats to Leslie Willis for winning the fastest time of the futurity and winning the Terry VanVolkenburgh fastest time award in memory of my grandpa. TEEN CORRAL w/Clint Van How often do you ride at home? I ride between 3-4 days a week. Who is your mentor? My mentors are Cody Bauserman and Kelly Bowser. I would love to be as successful as they are in the barrel racing industry. They both are very nice people and have taught me a lot and that is why I look up to them. They are both also very humble people.
Who taught you to ride? I started out riding at 4H shows on a pleasure pony named Sammy. Riding pleasure taught me the basics of hands and foot work. After that I started barrel racing. The main people who have taught me the most is Penny and Kenny Baker, Brad Shirey, Cody Bauserman, Patti Elliott, my dad, and Kevin Henning (my uncle). How long have you been riding? I have been riding since I was two years old, but I have been barrel racing since I was seven years old.

Horses (detail/age/color/quirks)? The main horse I ride is named Lady. She is a six year old sorrel mare who is by Heza Hero and out of Smarvelously who is by By Yawl. One of her quirks is she can be a real nut sometimes. For example, I haven’t tied her to a wall in a while because anytime she is tied to a wall, she usually pulls back and breaks her halter or lead rope. At the shows I usually tie her inside and at home I tie her in a stall or hook her to the walker (for some odd reason she won’t pull back if she is hooked to a walker). She is getting better though the more she matures. What have you accomplished in barrel racing? My favorite accomplishments all have been this year. I won the 2013 NBHA Ohio State Youth Championship. I finished third in the Open Finals as well. I also placed fifth in the Open Finals at the NBHA Great Lakes National and won the Double J Ranch Open Slot Race in Pendleton, South Carolina. These are my favorite accomplishments because they all have been filled with tough horses and riders. What is your favorite show and why? My favorite show is probably the NBHA Great Lakes National or the Diamonds and Dirt Barrel Horse Classic. I like the NBHA Great Lakes National because the arena is similar to what my horses are use to and they have nice warm up areas. I like the Diamonds and Dirt Barrel Horse Classic because the ground is good, it is at a nice facility, there are tons of shops, and there is a nice purse.
What other hobbies do you have? Another hobby I have is I LOVE taking pictures. Brent Puhl (Puhl’s Photography) has helped me SO much. He has taught me just about everything I know about taking barrel pictures. I have a page on Facebook with pictures I have taken. It is called “Morgan Henning Photography”. When you finish school, what do you plan on doing? I have no set plans on what I’m going to do after I am finished with school. I just know I will most likely go to college. Any advice to fellow barrel racers? Some advice I would like to give to fellow barrel racers is something Cody (Bauserman) said to me. He said “You can’t go in trying to win the class. You have to go in trying to make the best run that you can and if you do that, your horse will do the rest”. I would also like to share a quote. It is “Control your emotions or they will control you”. I like this quote because many people let their emotions get the best of them when they don’t have a good run. You have to put the past behind you and try again because nobody likes a sore loser. Favorite music? My favorite music is any song that will pump me up for a barrel race. Favorite color? My favorite colors are purple and lime green. Good luck at Congress!!!! And/or have fun shopping!!!

Clint is a graduate of East Central High School. His parents are Terrie VanVolkenburgh and respectively Joe Trentman. He has grown up in the horse world, both parents have rode almost all their life...Clint's grandfather as some of you may remember was the late Terry VanVolkenburgh, who would run up and down the fences when his daughters would run barrels. Clint began barrel racing at the age of 4 with a pony, then went on to particpate in Jr. Rodeo and his favorite event was the sheep riding, hard to believe he is now a barrel racer. He has won the Ohio Youth NBHA and Indiana Youth and Open NBHA , he has also won the Congress youth barrel four times, and was runner up in the Congress Sweepstakes. He placed at Josey Jr. world numerous times, and won the NBHA Youth World 1D in 2006. He loves to barrel race and is now trying his hand at the futurities. In Clint's spare time he mows grass for a part time job and is also very active in his church where he and his cousins are bible school helpers. Clint also volunteers one day a week at a school in Cincinatti where he spends time tutoring other kids in reading.

A great group of kids, the 2013-2014 IJRA membership and Board of Directors
T
he IJRA 2013-2014 season kicked off with a joint rodeo with the Indiana High School Rodeo Association in Columbus, IN in August. The joint rodeo was also the first Jr. High Division rodeo for the season, making that first rodeo weekend a busy and exciting one. The younger Indiana cowboys and cowgirls love to watch the older kids compete and also look up to them as role models and mentors. The IJRA members always enjoy watching the kids who have moved up to the high school ranks compete and love catching up with them even more. September took us to Cloverdale, IN to the C Bar C Expo Center. We had back to back weekends competing in the outdoor pen and the weather was beautiful. What a way to wrap up the season before our winter break! C Bar C was a wonderful location and they were very accommodating to our families. We would also like to thank the Zimmerman, Brown, and Crismore families for hosting these rodeos and doing a great job getting sponsorship. Thank you to the Eastep family for the great silent auction, tracking stalls and electric, and for our great entertainment with Alexandra Lee. Thank you to all of the families who helped chip in for the fun pizza party, we have so many great members and families in our association!

It’s great to see so many kids come together to encourage others to be their best.

Indiana High School Rodeo Association
IHSRA’s second rodeo takes place after this issue goes to print, it is going to be huge so I will have a great article next month. This month I am including a picture of me competing in the National High School Rodeo Queen contest held during the National High School Finals Rodeo in Rock Springs, Wyoming in July 2013. This was my second time competing in the Queen contest and it was not any easier preparing for the events of: horsemanship, modeling, personal interview, impromptu question, written test and a two minute speech. I competed against girls from all states including Canada, and Australia. The best part is getting to know the other Queens and making long-lasting friendships. I struggled for awhile on my speech until I was told to just write about something that is close to my heart and easy to relate to, so I wrote about my Mom. She has been supporting me through Junior High Rodeo and the last four years of the High School Rodeo. This speech tells the story of our relationship through the years and those memories made will last a lifetime. I hope you enjoy it, it comes from my heart and it placed 7th in the National Queen contest, which help me place 18th overall. I am very proud of this accomplishment, it has been a wonderful journey, I love Rodeo and my Mom! Miss Indiana High School Rodeo Queen 2013-2014 Camrie Goodson

Do You Have the Answers?

I was listening to a very interesting video/ podcast this past week called “The God Delusion Debate.” It was a debate between two well known scholars, each very successful and respected in their fields, that took place in Birmingham, Alabama. Professor Richard Dawkins (Atheist view) and his Oxford University colleague, Professor John Lennox (Christian view), discuss their views on the beginning of creation and whether or not God exists. If you get a chance to listen to the debate, it is very interesting and really made me think about what I know and what I believe. Many times I have been caught off guard and been asked hard questions about my faith (and/ or about God in general), as I am sure some of you have. Not only did this debate encourage me to educate myself more on the faith I proclaim, it also gave me many answers to some of the harder questions I may encounter. Many of us, myself included, answer lots of questions that we may pose to ourselves with “God just did it” or “I’ll ask God how that came about someday.” This may be sufficient for us - we already have faith....but what about an educated answer that backs up our belief? They are out there. Is it our responsibility to seek out those answers so we are prepared? There is something to be said about what some refer to as “blind faith.” It can be viewed as a good thing. We are supposed to have faith. Scripture tells us: Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1 But some questions can and have been answered. So, from the outside looking in - does it sometimes look like laziness or foolishness to non-Christians if we don’t know at least some of those important answers? Is that how we want to portray ourselves? This subject has apparently been on my subconscious mind for sometime - in the last year or so I have read Cold Case Christianity, by J. Warner Wallace, a Homicide detective who investigates Christian claims as if he were solving a case. I have also re-read Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis. in conversation several times lately....even in Sunday School at church this past week. I learned this week that some classes were “rewritten” at a local University because the professor believed in and mentioned Divine Creation, yet there are other classes using Atheist based textbooks being taught at the same University. I’m not sure of all of the facts to this, but I believe it stemmed from someone in the class complaining about a Christian viewpoint being mentioned. What is unsettling to me is that “the squeaky wheel gets the oil.” It is happening a lot in our country....from our government, to our places of work, all the way to our children’s schools. Is God trying to tell me to prepare myself for something related to this argument? Of course then I will relay the question to all of you.

Can you defend your faith?” I will share that I am comforted by the following words from scripture that assure me God will provide the words if I cannot: Matthew 10:19-20 19But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak. 20For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you. When it comes down to it, I’m sure I’m not qualified....but I’m willing to educate myself as best as I can. I don’t want to be lazy or foolish. Shaughnessy plans to use her T.I.P. award funds to help pay for her education at William Woods University, where she plans to pursue a path in the horse industry.
The Jockey Club Thoroughbred Incentive Program (T.I.P.) today announced the recipients of its two non-competition awards for 2013: the T.I.P. Thoroughbred of the Year Award and the T.I.P. Young Rider of the Year Award. The Thoroughbred of the Year Award recognizes a Thoroughbred that has excelled in a non-competitive career, such as equine-assisted therapy or police work.
Roberts, an 18-year-old from Winters, Calif. Her horse, Cece, aka Comcord, was a challenge to ride when Roberts first got her. “Cece was a very difficult horse when she first came off the track; however, many of her behavioral issues were caused by physical pain related to management practices that were easily corrected,” said Roberts.
This year’s recipient is Loveable Rascal, aka Rascal, an 11-year-old therapy horse from Fieldstone Farm Therapeutic Riding Center in Chagrin Falls, Ohio. He has been a therapy horse for six years.
Because of what she learned from Cece, Roberts plans to use her T.I.P. award to help pay for her education. She plans to study biochemisty and molecular biology at University of California, Davis, to prepare for veterinary school.
Rascal was bred by former governor of Kentucky, Brereton C. Jones’ Airdrie Stud. When Rascal left the racetrack he became a successful hunter/jumper, but after an injury, he was donated as a therapy horse, where he excelled because of his patience and easy-going attitude. “Rascal is one of those horses that not only knows he is helping riders, he wants to,” said Jinene Studinski, Equine Director at Fieldstone Farm in their Horse of the Year Application. “Through Rascal’s generous heart and instinct to serve, children with autism and Down Syndrome have said their first words. Adults with multiple sclerosis and children with neurological disorders have improved balance and gained strength. Some have even taken their first steps after riding him. High school students and military veterans have found hope and strength. Rascal is an amazing horse that reaches people of all ages and with all kinds of challenges and helps them become stronger physically and emotionally so they can better cope with daily life.” The young rider award, which recognizes a rider 18 or under who owns or leases a Thoroughbred for use in 4-H, Pony Club or other activities, was split among four riders, Chloe Bellerive, Madison Shaughnessy, Natalie Roberts, and Annise Montplaisir. Bellerive is 14 and has been riding since she was 2. She is involved in various horse activities both mounted and educational, including 4-H, FFA, and USHJA, and is an ambassador for Thoroughbreds. “Everywhere we go, after I exit the rings, someone always asks me about his breeding, and I very proudly state he is a Thoroughbred and an ex-racehorse that I was very lucky to find,” said Bellerive. Her horse, Lemon Twister, aka Atlas, raced four times with one win and earnings of $16,320. Bellerive, who is from Keedysville, Md., plans to use her T.I.P. award funds for training and to help promote Thoroughbreds in their second careers. Madison Shaughnessy, an 18-year-old from Niangua, Mo., rescued her horse MissGuided from Forget Me Now Horse Rescue, where Shaughnessy was a volunteer. MissGuided, aka Missy, had 16 starts and earned more than $22,000. “This horse has inspired me and changed my outlook on life in so many different ways,” said Shaughnessy.

Montplaisir met her horse, Cyclone Larry, aka Larry, when she was working as a Racehorse Ambassador at the North Dakota Horse Park. “On race days, I would stand by the front gates near a corral that held an off-the-track Thoroughbred,” said Montplaisir. “The goal was to promote the adoption of off-the-track Thoroughbreds and increase the popularity of horse racing.” Montplaisir, who is 18 and lives in Moorhead, Minn., plans to use her T.I.P. award funds to help pay for her education at North Dakota State University. Her goal is to work in the horse racing industry. Created and announced in October 2011, T.I.P. recognizes and rewards the versatility of the Thoroughbred through sponsorship of Thoroughbred classes and high point awards at sanctioned horse shows, performance awards, and noncompetition awards. The Jockey Club Releases 2012 Breeding Statistics The Jockey Club today reported that 2,392 stallions covered 37,908 mares in North America during 2012, according to statistics compiled through Sept. 9, 2013. These breedings have resulted in 22,001 live foals of 2013 being reported to The Jockey Club on Live Foal Reports received as of Sept. 9, 2013. The Jockey Club estimates that the number of live foals reported so far is approximately 90 percent complete. The reporting of live foals of 2013 is down 2.2 percent from last year at this time when The Jockey Club had received reports for 22,500 live foals of 2012. In addition to the 22,001 live foals of 2013 reported through Sept. 9, The Jockey Club had also received 2,891 No Foal Reports for the 2013 foaling season. Ultimately, the 2013 registered foal crop is projected to reach 23,000. The number of stallions declined 8.7 percent from the 2,620 reported for 2011 at this time last year, while the number of mares bred decreased 4.8 percent from the 39,838 reported for 2011. The 2012 breeding statistics are available alphabetically by stallion name through the Publications and Resources link on The Jockey Club homepage at jockeyclub.com. He also reiterated that the statistics should not be taken to represent the final fertility record of any single stallion or conception area. Kentucky annually leads all states and provinces in terms of Thoroughbred breeding activity. Kentucky-based stallions accounted for 41.1 percent of the mares reported bred in North America in 2012 and 48.8 percent of the live foals reported for 2013. The 15,569 mares reported bred to 249 Kentucky stallions in 2012 have produced 10,726 live foals, a 2.1 percent decrease on the 10,960 Kentucky-sired live foals of 2012 reported at this time last year. The number of mares reported bred to Kentucky stallions in 2012 declined 2.2 percent against the 15,918 reported for 2011 at this time last year. Among the 10 states and provinces in which stallions covered at least 1,000 mares in 2012, only Florida and New York stallions produced more live foals in 2013 than in 2012 as reported at this time last year. Mystery Solved..... We have a winner! Stormi Henry of Silex, Missouri identified our Mystery cowgirl from our last month’s issue. Stormi knew our cowgirl was Vickie Duke. We had a couple of guesses on the name of Vickie’s horse, but we aren’t 100% sure. Vickie lives in Whiteland, Indiana and is still active in the Horse world. She is involved with the QHRAI (Quarter Horse Racing Association of Indiana) and the IBRF (Indiana Barrel Racing Futurity) behind the scenes. She and her husband, Raymond, are still active with their race horses and barrel racing horses. Karla Baker and Warren Gann also knew our Mystery cowgirl. Congratulations to our winner.
