LETTER FROM THE EDITOR A Letter from the Editor

I

t has been one crazy month around here. From Duke, our outside dog (if you keep up with Bella’s stories you already knew that...), needing doctored three times a day to additional horses in the barn and a visit from our “Italian daughter,” September was a blurrrr! I am thankful that Duke is healed up for the most part now and I always love new horses to work with and the challenges they bring. I especially enjoyed getting to visit for a few weeks with Pauli. She was our exchange student from Rome, Italy and spent the school year with us a couple years ago. She became part of our family while she was here and we were all glad to see her again. She really embraced life on a horse farm during her first stay and missed it when she returned to Rome. She was excited to ride a horse again during this trip to visit and believe it or not, she even missed cleaning stalls! I hope you all are enjoying the cooler days and appreciating the leaves turning colors. I have witnessed some amazing sunsets over the past month or so as well...have you?

Follow Us

Until next month.....take a trail ride through a little water and appreciate the colors of fall...... and remember to count your blessings on horseback! God Bless and Ride Safe, Christa Conway

Older Horses

Barrelhorsehelp1 Posted 2014-09-23 7:26 PM (#7054550) Regular Posts: 56 Well.. for the first time in forever (actually its the first time ever) i bought a open horse. he is sound and has always been taken care of the proper way.. but he’s 10….. i know some of y’all think I’m crazy but I’ve never bought anything or even thought about buying something that old.. is 10 even that old? how long should i expect him to still run? any maintenance i should go ahead and start to prevent anything? cheryl makofka 10 is just entering into their prime. I would put the horse on a good joint supplement, I use Lubrysin, it works for my horses, but you need to find what works for your horse. Some put theirs on an adequan regime, some put their on glucosamine injectable (I have used this on different horses and it greatly reduces inflammation in the legs, and eliminated windpuffs) Some people use pentospan, some people use legend

newracer 10 isn’t old at all! I am running a 20 year old right now who was taken great care of and she has showed no signs of slowing down. Still places in the 1D locally. barrelbasher Shoot 10 is a great age. Not old at all. I ran my old horse till he was 18 or 19 and I only retired him because he fractured his leg. I still love to ride that ole booger. The horse that I run now is 12 and he is entering his prime. Just keep him fit and don’t over do it and he will be great for years and years Three 4 Luck Lots of horses stay competitive into their late teens and early 20s. Crap, I know one that’s 27 and still placing in the 1d at some tough jackpots. The care you give now will have an impact on the longevity of your horse. Injectable joint products are worth the cost IMO. Don’t run on dangerous ground, even if you hauled 3 hours to get there and are stuck in the mud until the rodeo is over. (Ha! Can you say voice of experience speaking?). And pay attention to your horse’s body so you can catch small problems before they get big--I go over mine several

times a week to look for tense or sore muscles and any puffy spots. The last 2 times my gelding has been checked by a chiro, he didn’t need adjusting because I had identified problem areas, massaged and stretched them, which IMO provides a better adjustment for most things anyway.

ghost rider Heck he’s just a pup...I just retired my mare last year at 27, and that was just because of life issues/no $$ to go anywhere.

sorrel horse ranch :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

scwebster 10 is a great age. As similarly said above, unless hes had his legs run off since early on, I think you are just fine.

star1218 Unless a horse did futurities / was started super young and running hard early, a good majority of horses are just getting going at like 5-8...and to get to a truly finished (+ mentally stable) horse they might be 7-10...

Southtxponygirl Oh no hes got one foot in the grave all ready, lol..

Read more at www.barrelhorseworld.com

I’ve never once heard a person refer to 10 as “older.” Nateracer I started my newest gelding on barrels at 10. He was broke prior to that. My main gelding is 20 and still going strong. I have never heard anyone say a 10 year old horse is OLD. OLD to me is 20+ but there are lots of good horses that are well taken care of that can run into their mid to late 20s. We ran our old mare until she was 27.

News Hoosier Neighbor wins Paul Tinkle ITOBA Stallion Season Stakes at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Aug. 27, 2014 – The first running of the Paul Tinkle ITOBA Stallion Season Stakes for colts and geldings represents a man who was very active in racing in the state of Indiana. It is only fitting that the horse who won it was named Hoosier Neighbor, signifying the type of man Paul Tinkle was. Trained by one of Tinkle’s friends, Mike Lauer, Hoosier Neighbor began the race very quietly, trailing the field of six into the turn as Big Chance and Alejandro Contreras led the way. Colony Classic and Alberto Pusac kept the pace lively by applying pressure on the lead from the inside. Meantime, Spanish Leather and Rodney Prescott sat three wide seeking an opportunity to take over the front spot. In the turn, Downtown Kid and Albin Jiminez scooted up the inside to get good positioning on Big Chance while the remainder of the field began to fan out wide across the track, leaving Hoosier Neighbor in the position widest of all heading into the stretch. Jockey Ricardo Santana Jr. had Hoosier Neighbor in full gear as they began to pass horses swiftly. Halfway down the stretch, Downtown Kid still had the advantage and was not giving in. Big Chance was also hanging tough, but Hoosier Neighbor proved to be the best at the end, sliding by for the win by one-half length over Downtown Kid. Big Chance was less than a length back of the win for third in the exciting three-horse photo. “Last time he (Hoosier Neighbor) ran six furlongs and that was a little short for him,” said Santana, Jr. “He likes the mile better. He really tries and he never gave up.” Hoosier Neighbor earned his first career win in the race, paying $8.40, $3.00 and $2.40 across the board. The Ocean Indy colt more than doubled his career earnings with a bankroll that now exceeds $69,000. Lauer’s wife, Penny, is the owner and the Indiana-bred colt comes from their farm in Kentucky. “We were hoping to break this colt’s (Hoosier Neighbor) maiden before the race but it didn’t work out that way,” said Lauer. “He’s an easy keeper and he always tries, just like his mother (Neighbors). In fact, all of her foals have been that way.” The time for the one-mile race was 1:39.92, which establishes a benchmark for future races in the Paul Tinkle ITOBA Stallion Season Stakes. Tinkle dedicated his life to horse racing in the state of Indiana. A longtime farm manager for Mac Fehsenfeld, Tinkle began training Quarter Horses and Thoroughbreds for the operation and spent the last 20 years going to sales and purchasing horses for the stable. One of those horses, Valid Video, made it all the way to the Breeders’ Cup for Fehsenfeld, a trip that both Francis and Paul enjoyed. Tinkle found out three years ago that he had cancer, but it didn’t slow him down. He continued to be involved in racing all the way up until the last few months of his life. Earlier this meet, the Tinkles got special permission to bring one of his horses to the paddock so he could see the horse, which would be his last time at the track.

“The stewards gave us special permission to bring Fran’s Flatter up to the paddock during the races,” said Francis. “So, Tony Duran brought him up and walked him around for Paul. Paul was in a wheelchair. That horse was Paul’s big dream. He didn’t get to see him race, but he got his picture taken with him that day and was so glad to see him.” After finishing second and third, Fran’s Flatter made it to the winner’s circle in his third career start for Raise the Bar Stables, LLC, which the Tinkles are part of. The win was 25 days after Paul passed away, which was July 5 at the age of 72. A Celebration of Life ceremony was held at Indiana Grand July 19 with a blanket and a large group of family members and friends in attendance for the honor. Later, Paul’s ashes were scattered over the turf course, continuing his connection with racing. “I was told the night of the Celebration of Life ceremony that they were going to name this race after Paul,” said Francis. “He would have been very proud.”

Lena Love wins filly division of ITOBA Stallion Season Stakes at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Aug. 27, 2014 – Lena Love was impressive in the first running of the $75,000-added ITOBA Stallion Season Fillies, romping away to a 12 and three-quarter length win Wednesday, Aug. 27. Albin Jiminez was a late rider change aboard the Robert Gorhamtrained filly who is now four for nine on the year. Lena Love and Jiminez started their journey from post one in the seven-horse field, finding a spot in mid pack as Aziperform and Rodney Prescott showed the quickest foot from the gate for the top spot. They were under pressure almost immediately from Cantico and Fernando De La Cruz while Deliver and Orlando Mojica made it three across for the top spot. Down the backstretch, Aziperform and Cantico were determined as the leaders during the one-mile event and led the way into the turn. Jiminez moved Lena Love up along the inside and saw a path open up between Aziperform and Cantico and seized the moment, moving through between horses quickly to gain the best advantage for the stretch drive home. Once Lena Love hit a quicker gear, she was unstoppable, carrying her momentum all the way through to the wire for the win. Best Memories and Ben Creed used the outside path to close in for second over Cantico who held onto third on the inside. “I had a ton of horse,” said Jiminez. “I started asking her at the half and moved up the inside. We were tracking behind the three (Cantico) and when I saw a spot, she (Lena Love) shot through and took off.” Lena Love is owned by Henry Mast’s Mast Thoroughbreds. The threeyear-old City Weekend grey filly earned her first stakes win and now possesses more than $69,000 in career earnings. She is currently on a three-race win streak for Gorham, who also trains Cantico, securing two of the top three finishes in the stakes race. Lena Love paid $12.60, $5.00 and $3.80 across the board as the mild upset winner. The time of the stakes race was 1:38.71.

Hoosier Park, was established in 2012 by Tinys First Pepsi and Rodney Prescott in a time of :17.870 seconds. This year’s race is the second year it has been contested at Indiana Grand and sets a record for the highest purse ever offered for the Futurity Final and marks the second highest purse of the 2014 racing season for Quarter Horses, second only to the $199,200 Gordon Mobley Futurity held in July.

Pistolpacking Pepsi extends win streak in QHRAI Derby at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino

Ms Fool Me Once wins the QHRAI Stallion Service Auction Futurity at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Sept. 13, 2014 – In the slimmest of margins between three horses, it was Ms Fool Me Once in the center of the track that earned the win in the 37th running of the QHRAI Stallion Service Auction Futurity at Indiana Grand Saturday, Sept. 13. Ridden by Christian Esqueda, Ms Fool Me Once completed the 350-yard dash in a time of :17.860 seconds to establish a new stakes record. Starting from post four, Ms Fool Me Once was strong out of the gate and held her ground against her opponents in the early stages of the race. She was one of the leaders from the very start, but as the finish line neared, it was clear she was the one to beat, inching out to an advantage in the final strides. Fast Man Vic and jockey Alvaro Hernandez-Lopez posed a threat from the inside while Jesse Jr First Down and Leading Quarter Horse Rider Shanley Jackson made a bold move late on the outside to create a close three-horse finish. When the photo sign came down, it was Ms Fool Me Once whose number flashed up as the winner by a nose over Fast Man Vic. Jesse Jr First Down finished a head back in third. Less than two lengths separated the top six finishers in the eight-horse final. “Last time we had a little trouble,” said Esqueda, who recorded the largest win of his career in the Futurity Final. “But she (Ms Fool Me Once) broke well today. It was close but I thought we had it.” Ms Fool Me Once grabbed her third win of the year in just six career starts. The two-year-old daughter of Escondido Beach now has in excess of $125,000 in earnings for Roy Moore, who is the breeder, owner and trainer. It was the first win for Esqueda aboard Ms Fool Me Once. “This win is even more special because I started with Roy (Moore),” said Esqueda. “I knew about horses but I didn’t know anything about riding them and he taught me.” A native of Mexico, Esqueda has been riding for the past three years. After only a few starts in 2012, he came back to earn a spot among the top 10 riders last year at Indiana Grand. This season, he’s currently ranked in 12th place among the leading Quarter Horse riders. In addition to riding at Indiana Grand, Esqueda has also been riding at Prairie Meadows this month. He plans to return to Hialeah to ride during the winter months. The previous stakes record for the QHRAI Stallion Service Auction Futurity, which was held for the first time in 1998 as a pari-mutuel event at

SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Sept. 13, 2014 – Pistolpacking Pepsi extended his win streak to three with a solid win in the 32nd running of the $79,233 QHRAI Stallion Service Auction Derby Saturday, Sept. 13 at Indiana Grand. Ridden by Jose Beltran, the three-year-old sorrel son of Jesse James Jr. established a new stakes record of :19.844 seconds, which was only one-one hundredths of a second off the track record for the 400-yard dash. Starting from post five, Pistolpacking Pepsi was the early morning line favorite, but it was Secret Miracle who grabbed all the attention from the bettors at post time. Pistolpacking Pepsi broke well from the center of the pack in post five and established himself as the front runner early on, rallying home to a one-half length win over BP Hit the Bigtime and Rodney Prescott for second. DNA Sweet Dale and Juan Guerrero finished third on the far outside of the 10-horse final. “I really like this horse (Pistolpacking Pepsi) because he’s always happy,” said Beltran, who was aboard for the second straight race. “He’s good in the gate. He’s good in the post parade. He just likes to run.” After a very successful freshman season where he earned the title in the $137,000 Miss Roxie Little Futurity Final, Pistolpacking Pepsi has come back with some punch as a three-year-old. He now has two stakes wins to his credit, earning the title in the $135,000 Blue River Derby earlier this year. He now has six wins in 13 career starts and boosted his career bankroll to more than $220,000 for partners Robert Ray and Ron Brown. Brown also trains the gelding, which is very recognizable by the large light spot on his left flank. “He (Pistolpacking Pepsi) was born with that spot,” said Brown. “He’s an easy keeper and he’s a runner. I have good help, and they all do the work with him. I just take the credit.” The previous stakes record for the QHRAI Stallion Service Auction Derby was set last year by Sum Fun For Magic and Harold Collins in a time of :19.938 seconds. The track record for the 400-yard distance was recorded in 2012 by Got Courage in a time of :19.830 seconds.

Rock Crushin Dynasty wins Speed Sale Stakes at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Sept. 13, 2014 – There was little surprise when Rock Crushin Dynasty and jockey Juan Guerrero came rolling into the picture from the far outside Saturday, Sept. 13 to take total control of the second running of the Speed Sale Stakes at Indiana Grand. The two-yearold gelding has been tough all season and his performance in the Speed Sale Stakes solidified that position in the two-year-old ranks. Starting from the outside post nine in the eight-horse lineup, Rock Crushin Dynasty broke well and had good positioning all the way through the 330yard dash. However, at the end of the race, he was accelerating quickly and was a clear winner on the far outside, defeating Sparky McClone and Julie Veltman by one-half length at the finish line. Carmels Finest and Jose Beltran finished third. Rock Crushin Dynasty recorded his second career win in only his fourth career start for trainer Randy Smith. The son of FDD Dynasty has not finished worse than third in his brief career. His win in the Speed Sale Stakes more than doubled his earnings to more than $35,000 for owner Lance Finlinson. Rock Crushin Dynasty paid $5.00, $3.20 and $2.60 across the board as the second favorite on the board. The time of the 330-yard dash was :17.098 seconds, which bested the time of last year’s inaugural running of the race and set a new stakes record. The Speed Sale Stakes was the third of three Quarter Horse Stakes races on the program that featured an evening of activities at Indiana Grand. The night included Brews, Blues & BBQ Fest featuring the final RushShelby Energy Family Fun Night of 2014 as well as Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund (PDJF) Night in which jockeys participated in several events to raise funds and awareness for the worthwhile organization. Several of the Quarter Horse jockeys took part in the activities. Victor Olivo, Gerardo Garrido and Shanley Jackson all took their turn in the dunk tank to raise funds for PDJF. They also took part in the Tug of War, pitting 13 jockeys against eight members of the gate crew, lining up in an even “pound for pound” competition. The jockeys struggled at first but finally got the ribbon pulled over to their side to win the battle and bragging rights for the competition.

Overholt Makes Bid For First IPRA World Title

By Tammie Hiatt IFR45 will mark Natalie Overholt’s eighth time to be among the top 15 cowgirls to run down the alley at the Oklahoma City State Fair Arena. In past qualifications, Natalie has been farther down in the pack with no clear shot at a world title. This IFR will be a different story as she is currently dominating the world standings with a cushy lead over the number two cowgirl, Tiffany Teehee of Claremore, OK. Overholt has always called Burr Oak, MI home, but last October she started sharing her residency with Lincoln, AR. “It’s worked pretty good being in Arkansas,” said Natalie. “I started hauling much earlier this year than I have in the past when I lived in Michigan. I went back to Michigan this summer and made a bunch of rodeos working my way to St.Tite. I’m working on being an Arkansan but I’m not used to the heat in the summers yet, so I was happy to go where it was cooler.”_MG_8534 “I’ve been to more rodeos this year than before and I think that has made a big difference in where I am in the world standings. Last year I didn’t get started until July and qualified in 11th. I’m very excited about IFR45, I have a real chance to win it,” said Overholt. “I’m really committed this year.” “My mare, Casey, has had a great year,” she said. “My goal for the year has been to always do the best I can do. I really want my mare to be chosen as Horse of the Year before I retire her. She’s 18 this year and I don’t plan to haul her as hard next year. I have a 5-year-old double-bred Sun Frost mare that I am seasoning. Showgirl is completely opposite of Casey, she’s tall and lanky and really long strided. Casey is short and stocky and has a totally different style. Overholt has been partnered with Fols Fancy Jet, aka Casey since 2003. Sired by Jet of Honor out of a mare named Fols Fancy Charge, Casey is one of Jet of Honor’s last crops of colts and is one of the last to still be competing. “We’ve had her since she was 2 years old. My dad bought a bunch of yearlings and 2-year-olds from the man that owned the stud and she was one of them. Betty Roper rode her a little while and then we turned her out. I started back riding her when she was four or five,” Natalie said. “She is really a determined horse and wants to win,” said Natalie. “She always wants to please. She’s got her bad points though, she’s pretty ornery and likes to play games when I try to catch her, she’s still young at heart.” “One of the things I love about her is that she can run in a 13-second race track pattern and then run in an 18-second pattern and win them both. She can go from one to the other easily.”

News Natalie reflects on advice she would give to a barrel racer wanting to start her rodeo career. “I would tell them to stick it out through the tough times. You will think you’re not going to do any good, when you are really just one step away from winning or placing. Don’t give up on yourself or your horse. They see people winning but they don’t know what they have been through to get to that point,” she explains. Traveling between McBain, MI and the St. Ignace, MI rodeo over Labor Day, Natalie and Casey took a little time out to ride in the water under the famous Mackinac Bridge. “At first she was a little scared, then she got used to the waves hitting her legs, she really liked it,” she said. “It was just something fun to get to do.” “I’ve been to a lot of great rodeos this year. Sallisaw, OK and South Bend, IN really stand out in my mind. I won both of those rodeos and just had really good runs,” said Natalie. For most people, coming into the IFR with a great shot at winning their first world championship may be a lot of pressure to handle but Overholt sums it up this way, “for me, it probably won’t bother me. I don’t get pressured. I prepare myself to do the best I can and I can try my hardest but the fact is, I can’t control everything. There will be a lot of factors that are out of my control, so we’ll just have to see how it all works out.” The 45th International Finals Rodeo will be January 16 -18, 2015 at the Oklahoma City State Fair Arena. Road to the Horse Brings Double the Excitement in 2015

Road to the Horse is well known for exciting twists and turns that keep the competition on the cutting edge of the equine industry. Road to the Horse 2015 will be no exception. For the very first time in the history of this prestigious event, fans will witness each competitor select two different horses from the AQHA Remuda from the 6666 Ranch. Competitors will take each colt through the entire competition, including the obstacle course and the winner of the event will be calculated on an accumulative score from both colts. This format will demonstrate the ability of each competitor to adjust their training techniques to work with the different personalities of the horse. Undefeated 3x Road to the Horse Champion Chris Cox will return to Road to the Horse in 2015. Chris Cox is a master of colt starting with World Championship wins in 2007, 2008 and 2011. No other competitor in the electrifying history of Road to the Horse has taken home the coveted title every time they have stepped into the round pen. Road to the Horse 2014 Champion and Ram Wild Card Champion Jim Anderson will also return in 2015 to defend his title. Fans at Road to the Horse 2014 witnessed a Cinderella story unfold when Anderson captured both the Wild Card Championship title and the main event title. The 2015 Wild Card winner will be announced and then immediately step into a round pen to compete for the Road to the Horse 2015 World Championship of Colt Starting title against Anderson and Cox. “It’s double the 6666 Ranch horse power, double the horsemanship, double the excitement and double the challenge at Road to the Horse 2015 when our 3X Undefeated World Champion Chris Cox returns to face off with our 2014 World Champion Jim Anderson and the 2015 Wild Card Champion. Did anyone expect less from Road to the Horse 2015?” states Road to the Horse Owner and Producer, Tootie Bland. “When the dust clears on Sunday there will not be enough adjectives in the dictionary to describe this historical Road to the Horse!”

Road to the Horse fans are also in for an additional treat when one lucky fan will walk away from Road to the Horse 2015 with a check for $10,000. At the commencement of Road to the Horse, a group of lucky fans will be randomly drawn from the entire list of Road to Horse 2015 ticket purchasers. Those lucky fans will then each select a colt from the AQHA Remuda from the 6666 Ranch. The fan who selected the 6666 Ranch colt that is the highest scoring horse at the event will receive a check for $10,000. Road to the Horse 2015 will return to the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY on March 26 – 29, 2015. Road to the Horse 2015 tickets are now available online at www.RoadtotheHorse.com or by calling 877-772-5425. Follow the journey of the 2015 Wild Cards and competitors on Road to the Horse Facebook.

Grant Applications Now Being Accepted

Submissions for the 2015 AQHA international horsemanship camps, as well as the international internship are due by October 10. Each summer, the American Quarter Horse Association is proud to partner with some of the country’s best equine and agriculture universities to offer international horsemanship camps through one of AQHA’s international affiliates. The deadline to submit grant applications for clinics conducted between June and September of 2015 is Friday, October 10, 2014. A downloadable application for grants is available online at AQHA.com or by calling AQHA’s International Department at 806-378-4342. International horsemanship camps were established to help foster an environment in which people around the world could learn more about the American Quarter Horse; increase their horsemanship skills; or improve their skills in various disciplines. As part of this outreach program, AQHA also selects an international intern to help coordinate the clinics and serve as an ambassador for the Association and the breed. The intern spends the summer in Europe working with the selected universities for Europe, blogs about his or his experiences along the way, makes a presentation about AQHA at each of the camps and helps reinforce the position of the American Quarter Horse as the world’s most popular and versatile breed of horse. Applications for the 2015 AQHA international internship are currently being accepted. Learn more about the position. The purposes and objectives of the international horsemanship camps are: • • • •

To improve horsemanship skills in international countries through a series of interactive clinics To cultivate new members for both AQHA and the host affiliate To position the American Quarter Horse as the preferred breed for recreational riding, showing and racing To ensure the welfare of the American Quarter Horse is paramount to all other concerns

Interested colleges and universities may apply to conduct a series of camps in Europe, Central and South America or Oceania (Australia/New Zealand/Japan). 2014 Fulton Performance Horse and Production Sale Averages Soar High Seller Lenas Last Streaker

the Love Chick Blues mare, Hickory Chick Blues, the bay roan mare garnered a top bid of $24,500. Blue Streakin Chick was consigned by guest consignor, Jennilee Thompson, and sold to Katie Holt from Texas. The third high seller, was another well bred 2 year old daughter of A Streak Of Fling out of the great Fulton Ranch mare, CCC Sissy Chex, who is by Bueno Chex Imp. The red dun filly showed the class everyone wants in a performance horse or broodmare and had the build to go do it. Consigned by the Fulton Ranch this good filly went to Paul Anderson from Illinois.

T

he 2014 Fulton Performance Horse and Production sale was held August 22, 2014 with a large, energetic crowd in attendance, ready to bid on some of the country’s top bloodlines at the Cherry County Fairgrounds in Valentine, NE. The 2014 sale produced the highest sale average so far for the offspring of the two Fulton Ranch sires, A Streak Of Fling and CS Flashlight.

With A Streak Of Fling closing in on $1 million in offspring earnings and being named the #7 Barrel Sire For All Ages, All Divisions for 2013 according to Equistat, the interest in his colts from top trainers and riders throughout the country remained strong. The A Streak Of Fling 2 Year Olds were in high demand, fetching an average of $18,350. CS Flashlight has already sired multiple stakes winners on the racetrack and winners in the arena, so his 2 Year Olds proved to be valuable commodities as well, bringing in an average of $12,714. The first crop of 2 year olds by CS Flashlight crossed on the daughters of A Streak Of Fling were especially well received, averaging $14,000 each. Topping the sale was the sharp looking red roan 2 year old daughter of A Streak O Fling, Lenas Last Streaker, who caught the eye of everyone in attendance with her striking looks and top-shelf breeding. Her dam Easy April Lena, is not only by the great performance sire Doc O Dynamite, but is a full sister to Rachael Myllymaki’s multi NFR qualifier horse, Easy Does It Doc. In today’s age of embryo transfer, those high quality mares are worth a mint and Lenas Last Streaker proved that, going for $26,500. She was consigned by Fulton Ranch and purchased by Deloris Adamson of Nebraska. The second high seller, Blue Streakin Chick, was a riding son of a gun, ready to sell. The 2 year old daughter of A Streak Of Fling son, Streakin Pac Bar, rode soft and light and was ready to go any direction. Out of

In yet another sign of the strength of the performance horse market, the weanlings of A Streak Of Fling averaged a whopping $10,571 and the CS Flashlight weanlings averaged a brisk $8,125. The top selling weanling of the sale was Fling Ta Famous, who Gary Langford from Florida went to $13,000 to buy this stud prospect from Lisa Fulton & Kelly Gorrell. This full brother to superstar mare, Fame Fling N Bling, who has won over $200,000, should be a great performer and sire down there road. The Overall average of the 54 head sold was $12,117. The A Streak Of Fling yearlings averaged $11,750 and the CS Flashlight yearlings averaged $8,367. Doc, I breed and train AQHA race horses and barrel horses. Do I need to be doing anything different in the way I select, care for and train these two different but similar athletes? Do I need to feed them differently? Do I get them physically fit the same way? Are they different in the injuries they get in their competitions? What is the best way to keep them sound?

T

hose are all very good questions. The basic theory behind the selection process, nutrition program and training program is close to the same for all equine athletes. Most of the differences come in the training regimens. There might be some differences in the nutrition program once the horse goes into training. As we have discussed before, soundness starts at conception. No matter what discipline the equine athlete, or any athlete for that matter, competes in genetics plays a huge part in future soundness. If you have an ex race horse mare or stallion that successfully ran in only a few races, then the likely hood that their offspring will compete successfully for a long time is less than when you breed two athletes that competed well over a few or more years. The same holds true for barrel horses, western pleasure horses, jumpers, hunters, cutters and all other disciplines. If we choose soundness as one of our major criteria when breeding horses we will end up with sounder horses. This is related to the coefficient of genetic heritability. In other words, the more pressure we put on a certain trait the more that trait shows up in the horse and other traits show up to a lesser degree. That is why dairy cows have large mammary glands and smaller muscle mass and beef cows have more muscle mass and smaller mammary glands. They were selected for different genetic traits. The same thing happens when breeding horses. If we select our breeding stock solely on speed and don’t put any weight on soundness, we will end up with very fast horses that don’t stay sound very long. The breeding stock to look for is mares and stallions that performed well at the level you want to perform and they have a history of performing well at that level for a long period of time. Therefore barrel horses and race horses are basically same in the genetic election process as far as soundness goes. Mothering ability, fertility, trainability, intelligence and conformation are all traits that have a high degree of heritability. Therefore choose your breeding stock carefully because they will influence your athletes for decades to come.

Page 22

Nutrition is another important factor that begins at conception. A pregnant mare has certain nutritional requirements beginning early in her pregnancy. Some breeders think that just because a mare is in good flesh that the fetus is receiving all the nutrition that it needs. Under most conditions, the mare’s body is geared to take care of the fetus first and the mare second but there is definitely a difference in the survival rate of foals from well nourished mares and those born to mares that were not fed properly. These nutritional deficits may not

Another important aspect of raising horses is that the bones, ligaments and tendons will form stronger and last longer if the baby is raised outside. It has been shown with research that foals that are kept in a stall for even a few weeks have a higher rate of bone, ligament and tendon problems later in life. Of course sometimes we have to keep them in for various reasons but their physical development is best when they can run and play in large pastures while growing up.

even show up early in life but they can show up later as unsoundness. Nutrition is not as simple or as complicated as it is sometimes made out to be. A balanced diet does not consist of equal parts sweet feed and pellets of a certain % protein feed. A balanced diet also does not consist of a balanced feed with several various supplements added that result in a balanced feed becoming unbalanced. The nutrition program will depend partly on where in the country horses are being bred and raised. Many aspects have to be considered such as calcium and phosphorous ratios and amounts, micronutrients, macronutrients, and energy and protein levels. More is not always better. Nutrition for the young horse between birth and the two-year old year is very important. The bones, ligaments and tendons are being formed during that time. Proper levels of all the nutrients stated above are equally important to the young horse as far as development goes. The exact levels will vary from horse to horse and each young horse should be evaluated weekly to make sure it is not developing any developmental orthopedic disease or angular limb deformities. If caught early these problems can be treated conservatively many times. Otherwise they become surgery candidates or they become untreatable. This results in a poorer quality of life for the horse and/ or added expense for the owner. It is important to consult with an equine veterinarian who is knowledgeable in equine nutrition before problems present themselves. Many times when you can visibly see the problem, it is too late. This is one area where an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Ask The Vet

We would like to help you get your horse health questions answered by a knowledgeable equine veterinarian. Submit your questions to us via email, we will present them to a qualified veteranarian that specialize in equine health and then publish the question along with the vet’s response in a future issue of The Horse Resource. Once an athlete of any age is in training the goal for that individual must be decided upon. The initial exercise routine is basically the same for all disciplines. The young horse must get used to carrying his rider. This requires a new set of muscles and different ligament and tendon strength. This strength won’t come overnight. We must be careful not to undertrain or overtrain for any discipline. Undertraining results in a horse that is set up for injuries during competition. Overtraining wears out our athletes before they ever get started. Many injuries are created because of repetitive wear and tear on ligaments, tendons and bones. Naturally a horse running 440 yards needs to develop his ligaments, tendons and bones to a different degree than a horse racing 250 yards or racing around a barrel pattern. Development of different muscle fibers are required as more long slow twitch muscle fibers for the 300 yard specialist and even more with the barrel horse. The 440 yard specialist needs more of the longer slower twitch fibers to be blended with his short slow twitch fibers so that he gets out the gate quickly but has the ability to give it his maximum effort for 440 yards. Each program is then tailored to the individual horse. I hope gives you some general answers and theory to ponder for your questions. There are many details that make the difference between winning and performing at the very best level and being an also-ran. If we take care of all the small details that we can then at least we know our equine athletes were given the best care possible and they were given every thing they needed to perform at their highest level and at the same time remain sound and healthy. Anything less than taking care of all the details is a disservice to our equine friends. They deserve the very best we have to offer and with todays science and knowledge in equine sports medicine and nutrition, we have a lot to offer.

IJRA Rodeo News

IJRA News

Story provided by: Rachel Thomas

Photos provided by IJRA

IJRA officially started the 2014-2015 last month at C bar C arena in Cloverdale, Indiana. We had a great time with our rodeo and

carry in dinner and were also very happy to welcome back our past members as well as our new members. The September rodeo was also a IHSRA Junior High Division rodeo and the second rodeo of the season for those members. Points are accruing and the kids continue to set new personal best times and scores. To follow our IJRA members points, times and scores, check out our website at www.ijra.org. There you can also find our schedule, classified ads, as well as more information about joining our great association. For all of you on Facebook, we are there too, just find us under IJRA Indiana Junior Rodeo Association. This month we wanted to feature our outgoing IJRA Princess, Lexy Petro. She is the daughter of John and Jody Petro from New Palestine, Indiana. Lexy did an amazing job as our princess this past year. She organized many events and showed great leadership skills throughout her time as Princess. Lexy was and will continue to be a great role model for our members and community. We wish her the best as she competes in her final year of IJRA. Lexy’s outgoing speech is included below.

Featuring 2013-2014 IJRA Princess, Lexy Petro It is truly unbelievable that my year as Miss Indiana Junior Rodeo Princess is coming to an end. Although I will miss it, I know the next princess will be just as great. It has been an awesome year serving as your Princess. I’d like to thank my family and friends for helping me so much. I’m very thankful for the opportunity that I’ve been blessed with, it has made me the person I am today. I am now less timid and more outgoing. Being princess has showed me that even though something doesn’t go my way, whether in the arena or not, I need to come out with a positive attitude. That’s not always easy because there is always someone watching. There is so much more to being princess then just looking pretty and doing grand entry, it takes a lot of responsibility and hard work. As Princess, you are representing the Indiana Junior Rodeo Association. The IJRA is a very important part of my life, it has created lots of memories that I will carry forever. I wish every child could experience what I have. I am so honored and blessed to have served as your IJRA princess. Thank you for an awesome year. Also, I’d like to thank Ashely Coleman with 31, Cowpokes, and Diane Terwilliger with Mary Kay for donating items for the competition.

IJRA News We would also like to congratulate Maci Jo Zimmerman who will fill Lexy’s boots as the 2014-2015 Indiana Junior Rodeo Association Princess. Maci Jo will be adding to our articles from time to time, keep an eye out for what she is up to this rodeo season. This year’s competition had many great cowgirls competing for the chance to lead our association. Everyone did a great job and we are proud to have all of you as members in our association. The princess contestants would also like to thank Justin Brown for donating so much of his time to take some amazing pictures during the princess contest. Justin went above and beyond to help capture great memories for the girls. If you are looking for someone to take your family, check out Justin’s website and get in touch with him. Justin Brown, Art Director & Designer, website www.addsomebrown.com, email hey@addsomebrown.com and phone number (812) 345-4372. We would also like to recognize Jody and John Petro, and Autumn Brown for the little extras they did in making the girls experience during the princess contest so much fun.

A message from your IJRA Princess, Maci Zimmerman: September is Childhood Cancer Awareness month! Your IJRA Princess, Maci Zimmerman, will be collecting items to donate to Riley Hospital. The Hospital is currently in need of the following items: 1) Coloring Books - they ask that they be small (not big & thick). It’s In The Air

Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump? (I Corinthians 5:6)

titudes, even our relationship with God. It spills over from work, play, church and relationships into our personal choices.

The wafting aroma of the neighbor’s barbeque is disappearing with the end of summer. The crispness of fall is carried in the cool breeze. So, what is it in the air? Violence! Front page, unbelievable, turn-yourhead-away-from-the-television kind of violence! It’s toward wives, fiancés’, girlfriends, ex-girlfriends, and now, children. Society can be a cruel place.

“Bad company does corrupt good character.” (1 Corinthians 15:33).

But wait! It’s not society I’m talking about. It’s the National Football League. Enough has been written about Ray Rice, Ray McDonald, Greg Hardy and Adrian Peterson. Nothing else needs to be said. The courts, legal and of public opinion, will issue their verdicts. I don’t know anything about the character of these men. Fair or not, right now, one incident defines them. But, why has so much flooded over the white lines of the playing field into their personal lives? I heard experts from CNN to ESPN conclude it is all a product of an environment saturated with violence. It’s a vicious, violent sport. The field is covered with gigantic, incredibly fast, gifted athletes with a certain predilection to hit people really hard. And, they love it! It’s a world of men willing to sacrifice their own safety for a tackle, a standing ovation and a victory. No different with us!

Hang out with people, who talk like drunken sailors, you’ll usually speak the same language. Fish swim with others, who drink like a fish. Want to be a complainer, whiner, or “Negative Nancy”? Find another one; spend some time together; your wish will probably come true. You can always find someone on Sunday morning, who wants to skip church with you. Like being judgmental, critical and pious? Look down across the aisle in church; you can find someone to share in your misery. Judging is not the point. Responsibility is on me for me! My environment, including the people in it, pushes and pulls my own behavior. Of course, we can have a positive impact on others. More often than not, it is us, who are affected. Violence produces violence! Love generates love! Evil harbors more evil! Goodness seeks goodness! “Associate yourself with men of good quality if you esteem your own reputation. It is better be alone than in bad company.” ~ George Washington

CHRISTIAN COWBOY COLLECTION

By Christa Conway

What Does Being A Christian Mean To You? That was the question asked by the pastor at church this past Sunday. It seems like a simple enough question, right? Until you start to think about how you would answer. Of course, the obvious came to my mind as I started thinking about my own personal answer. I immediately thought of salvation... of eternal life and Heaven....of God’s plan and what Jesus did on the cross. This was somewhat of an interactive message and I listened as people in the congregation began to give their own answers. One person said “continual growth to eternity,” another one said “forgiveness,” and another said “a relationship with my creator.” Guess what. They were all correct. Here’s my take from the discussion. Being a Christian should something” to you.

“mean

It should mean enough to you that you put effort into the growth process. Once we have accepted Jesus as our saviour, it shouldn’t stop there. That would be like having a newborn baby and then not nurturing or caring for that baby. Scripture says that once we are “saved,” we become a new creation. 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV) Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! Being a Christian is a new beginning. People will notice a change in us. It shows through our actions. I am not saying that we won’t make mistakes, but we should strive to be better. We should have a desire to follow Him - and people will notice, I guarantee it. 1 John 2: 3-5 3We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. 4Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. 5But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: Being a Christian means that some things that used to be important no longer seem so important. One of the members of the congregations said, “we are in the world, but not of the world.” John 15 tells us that we do not belong to the world. (I love this scripture!)

Page 38

John 15: 18-19 18 “If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. 19If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.”

which we measure everything we are taught and told.

The dictionary defines the word “Christian” as: one who professes belief in the teachings of Jesus Christ.

The best part of all is that if we continue to pursue “getting to know Him,” then the path he has for becomes a whole lot clearer during the process.

That is probably the most important point that was made during the message. Do you really know Jesus? Do you believe in his teachings? Have you studied his word enough to be able to “back it up?” The best way to get to know someone is to spend time with them, right? This could mean time spent in prayer, time at church and with other believers and most importantly, studying His word and teachings. This is how we can really get to know Jesus. The word of God should be a standard by

What does being a Christian mean to me? It means everything to me, but I admit that I fail at doing it “right” everyday.

Romans 12:2 2Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. I challenge you to think about what being a Christian means to you:) Happy Trails & God Bless! Christa

On the Trail

By Brother Brad Curtis of Mountain Top Cowboy Church

LAT & TWIGGS The sun was on the rise As stars began to dim Lat pulled up on the reins Said my future ain’t so grim

As for the trail before me You’ve already rode Now you’re with me Carryin` my heavy load All I have to do Is ride my pony Twiggs Lord, I truly thank you I’m not livin` with them pigs

The air was cool and crisp In the mornin` light Starin` at its beauty Thinkin` ain’t that a sight

Yep, you changed me Lord Put me on this path Glory is before me And not your Father’s wrath

He petted Twiggs’ neck Then bowed his head Began to thank Lord For what lay ahead

Today is goin`a be great Because you’re ridin’ with me I’m not sure what’s out there But I can’t wait to see

He said, Lord this is Lat We’ve been pards for awhile Thanks for ridin` with me All these long hard miles

So Lord, thanks again For another day Ridin` my pony Twiggs And goin` the narrow way Lat then said, Amen Then petted his pony Twiggs Said yep it’s a good day I sure don’t miss them pigs Psalm 3:3 But thou, O LORD, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head. One Last (& most important) thought… Salvation is a gift and a choice...... Read past issues of our Christian Cowboy Collection and the Christian Barrel Racer’s Newsletter at the website below!

Jesus died on the cross as the final sacrifice for our sins. He was resurrected on the 3rd day and he defeated death and Satan for us. All we have to do is believe that He beat death, acknowledge it with our words and accept Him as our personal savior. That’s when the rebirth happens and we are changed! He then promises us eternal life with Him in Heaven! You can’t earn your way into Heaven; you have to accept His gift of salvation. So many people think they “aren’t good enough” to get to Heaven… But… Salvation is a GIFT from God and you don’t earn a gift. Gifts are given to you and for the gift to be yours, you have to accept it. All we have to do is accept this wonderful gift. I know I have…won’t you?

But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. Romans 5:15 For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Romans 10: 9-10

Indiana to Regulate Cobalt At its September 4, 2014 public meeting, the Indiana Horse Racing Commission voted 3-0 to approve rules to regulate cobalt levels in race horses. Cobalt is a naturally occurring trace mineral. The excessive administration of cobalt may enhance the performance of, and potentially become hazardous to, the horse. The Commission’s action is based on recommendations in a staff report prepared by its Executive Director, Joe Gorajec. The report, which can be accessed at www.in.gov/hrc, indicates that results of blood tests from horses racing this season at Hoosier Park and Indiana Grand indicate that excessive levels of cobalt in horses is jeopardizing the integrity of Indiana’s racing product and endangering the health and welfare of its horses. “The integrity of our racing product and welfare of our horses are of paramount importance to us. The Commission has now taken appropriate action to address this issue,” said Joe Gorajec, Executive Director. The threshold level will be 25 parts per billion (ppb) and enforcement of the new regulation will begin with races conducted on September 30, 2014. Any trainer whose horse’s blood tests high for cobalt will be subject to disciplinary action, which could include up to a one-year suspension, as well as a fine and forfeiture of the purse. The samples will be tested at the University of Kentucky Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory in Lexington, Kentucky. The Commission would like to thank RMTC’s Executive Director Dr. Dionne Benson; LGC Science, Inc. Laboratory Director, Dr. Richard Sams; and the University of Kentucky Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory for their invaluable assistance. In addition, the Commission is grateful to the Kentucky Equine Drug Research Council and the RMTC for providing the funding of the study which has lead to the threshold level. For further information contact Joe Gorajec at jgorajec@hrc.in.gov or at (317) 233-3119.

Indiana Grand Racing & Casino donates $1,000 to Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Sept. 13, 2014 – In a night dedicated to the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund (PDJF), jockeys stepped up to help raise awareness and funds for the worthwhile organization. To help kick fundraising off, Indiana Grand Racing & Casino donated $1,000 to the cause to help boost to total of donations to PDJF, which assists jockeys who have experienced career ending injuries. Representing the jockey colony for the $1,000 check presentation in the winner’s circle was Alejandro Contreras, Rodney Prescott, Octavio Vergara Jr. and Malcolm Franklin. Lenny Lisle, director of marketing at Indiana Grand, made the presentation to the group of jockeys during the racing program.

ITOBA NEWS - Indiana Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association races. A total of 13 jockeys lined up against eight members of the gate crew to battle it out pound for pound in the competition. In the end, the jockeys got the final call as winners of the tug of war and earned bragging rights. In addition to the activities trackside, jockeys also stepped up to donate mounts from the day for PDJF. At the conclusion of the night, more than $1,500 was raised to support PDJF.

Several activities took place during PDJF Night, including a session where jockeys “passed the boot” to gather donations from racing fans. In addition, several jockeys braved cooler temperatures by climbing into the dunk tank to raise funds through “A Buck a Ball.” Octavio Vergara Jr., Ben Creed, Shanley Jackson, Victor Olivo and Gerardo Garrido each took their turn on the seat over the cold water as racing fans took turns throwing balls to splash the jockeys in the tub of water. Jockeys also came out in full force for a tug of war competition between

To kick off the weekend event, five jockeys visited Riley Children’s Hospital Friday, Sept. 12. The trip was made possible through Mike and Marci McCauley, who are owners and breeders in the state of Indiana. Their eight-year-old daughter, Cierra, is a cancer survivor. She was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma at the age of six but is now cancer free. Jockeys went to the oncology floor at Riley and were able to visit with more than a dozen kids under the age of 18 who are currently undergoing treatment for some form of cancer at the facility. Those attending the hospital visit included Rodney Prescott, Ben Creed, Octavio Vergara Jr., Malcolm Franklin and Amanda Tamburello. Rachel McLaughlin, Indiana Grand’s on-air racing personality, also accompanied the jockeys to Riley Children’s Hospital, which is located in downtown Indianapolis. The visit was part of the support for Childhood Cancer Awareness month, a movement by jockeys at 22 different racetracks across the United States. Jockeys are wearing gold ribbons during the month of September to support the cause. Donations are still being accepted to support PDJF. For more information or to make a donation, go to PDJF.org. Live Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing continues through Saturday, Nov. 1 offering racing Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 2:05 p.m. with Friday and Saturday action beginning at 5:05 p.m. For more information, visit the Website at indianagrand.com. Duke Still on the Mend The “rehab facility” here at the farm has finally closed. Last month you all read about how Duke was injured and had to spend (way too much) time in the house. The poor guy was pitiful with his belly wrap and head cone.

Thank God he finally got the “OK” from the vet to have that disgraceful cone removed and his tubes and stitches taken out. He was one happy dog to have his freedom back again. I think the lady of the house was just as happy as Duke when he finally got to go back outside to live. I have to give her credit, she was a trooper when it came to “dog doctoring.” She was way more patient than I would have been. I’ll bet I watched her change that belly wrap at least three times a day for a month. (Duke couldn’t go outside and take care of his “business” with the belly wrap covering his equipment, if you get my drift, being a boy and all.) I do have to admit that he was a very good patient. He would stand perfectly still while the belly wrap was being removed and then replaced. I think he knew he was lucky to be alive and have

people that cared enough to treat his injury. I don’t want to think about what the alternative could have been. His injury was pretty bad, I wasn’t sure if he was coming back home when he left that night. I’m actually glad the old fella is still around. Now that Duke is back outside, Freckles and Chuck seem to be happier too. Chuck has decided that he likes roosting right outside the kitchen door better than in the barn. Now every morning (and any other time he gets the urge) Chuck wakes up the entire house with his “cock-a-doodle-doo.” Just my luck. Not much sleeping in around here. I wonder if they make muzzles for roosters.... Later....
