LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
W
ell, I have to admit it. I think I am hooked. I am not sure what I like most about the new hobby I have recently aquired....the excitement of riding a horse and shooting a gun at the same time, the challenge of being accurate with gun and horse or the new wardrobe that potentially comes with the hobby. Well, not a completely new wardrobe, but at least a few pairs of chinks and a holster set or two. Honestly, I don’t think I could choose which part I like the best. Last month my family and I attended (and Vick and I competed at) our first Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association match. The event was close to home and we were blessed to have the assistance of Bobby & Barb Ruwe when we arrived. They fitted Vick up in Bobby’s chaps and holster while Barb introduced me to Joyce Mingus who had chinks and a holster for me (that matched my hat perfectly!) We borrowed guns and Vick borrowed a horse from Barb. I thought I would give my barrel horse, Butler, a try through his first CMSA course.
Things actually went pretty well for both of us. Vick made a wise decision in choosing to ride Buck, but I was very proud of Butler’s attempt. Of course, being a barrel horse, he thought he was supposed to hustle through the baloons and barrels. If I had been able to shoot as fast as he wanted me to let him go, I think I would have won my first match! Of course, being only the second time I had handled a gun, I didn’t shoot quite that fast. We hade a great time, met some wonderful people while we were there and decided that we had to try it again. Lucky for us, CMSAs Midwest Region Extravaganza Shoot was just around the corner. We made the drive to Cloverdale, Indiana and met up with the Ruwe’s again at Crossroads Arena. This time all of the “big dogs” were in town. World Champions, World Record holders....some of the best in the country attended this event. There were folks there from approximately 13 states and from as far away as Colorado and Florida. It was amazing watching the skill and talent of the riders and their horses. Vick and I did shoot again and he ended up placing 4th in his class. I didn’t do as well, (although I did ride Barb’s horse this time and that part was perfect.) I will just say that Bobby Ruwe was correct when he told us that Cowboy Mounted Shooting can be very humbling! My competitiveness will make sure that I get another “shot” - pun intended! For more info on CMSA and upcoming events near you, take the time to visit the CMSA website at www.cowboymountedshooting.com. And while you are there, look for the video of Cody Clark riding his palomino horse Gin to a new World Record. All I can say is - AWESOME! Summer is quickly fading away. Next month is already time for our Congress issue, pick up a copy from one of our vendors while you get your Congress shopping done. We are also getting ready to start thinking about our Stallion Calendars. If you would like to have your stallion included as one of our feature stallion, contact us ASAP, spots will fill up fast. Until next month, take a “shot” at something new...... ......and always remember to count your blessings on horseback... God Bless and ride safe, Christa Conway

News KENTUCKY QUARTER HORSE ASSOCIATION BREEDERS’ INCENTIVE FUND PAYOUTS ANNOUNCED FOR SHOW POINTS EARNED DURING 2009 Kentucky Quarter Horse Association -- The most successful state breeder’s
incentive program of the last 25 years, the Kentucky Quarter Horse Association Breeders’ Incentive Fund, has released projected payouts resulting from points earned by eligible horses in shows recognized by AQHA during 2009, the most recently completed competition year. Both the number of winners and also the point values are up from last year, according to KyQHA.
“There are more show-horse owners, and foal and stallion nominators eligible for payments this year from the BIF program than ever before,” reported Norm Luba, the BIF committee chairman. “There are nearly 650 eligible winners for 2009, compared to about 450 for 2008 and 153 for 2007. In addition, the value of the points has gone up from an average of $72.33 for all show horses in 2008 to $187.99 per point for senior show horses and $115.54 per point for junior show horses in 2009.” Rich Wilcke, KyQHA president, said, “In 2008, KyQHA made some forward-thinking changes to how these funds from the state of Kentucky are distributed by KyQHA. We’re grateful that the several steps we took have led both to significantly higher point values for 2009 show horse events than for 2008 events and also to a greater number of horse buyers and exhibitors earning these awards. The upshot is that a vast majority of the individual owners and nominators of Kentuckybred American Quarter Horses will have earned larger incentive checks this year.”
Page 12
KyQHA BIF payouts are based upon show points earned in all recognized AQHA competitions. As of press time, the racing points for eligible Kentucky-bred Quarter Horses in 2009 had not yet been tabulated or received from AQHA. Because show points and racing points are calculated differently by AQHA, two pools are created – one for show and one for race. On average, they are virtually the same per each horse. The list of award winners can be viewed on at www.kyqha.com. In keeping with the protocol established over previous years, information regarding the horses, the points earned, the award amounts, etc., will remain posted on the KyQHA website for at least 30 days for public review. There is an automated response mechanism available for comment and/or corrections. “An exhaustive review has been accomplished prior to the posting of these results, and then, with tens of thousands of additional eyes now reviewing the information while it is posted on the website, any known or suspected improprieties, as well as any inaccuracies concerning the calculations, can be reported to KyQHA easily and anonymously,” stated Bennie Sargent, AQHA director and member of the KyQHA BIF Committee. Comments can also be made by calling (888) 367-5742 and leaving a message on the BIF Fraud Hotline (option #2). All records receiving an “inquiry” are highlighted in red on the website so that interested parties can closely examine them. They will remain highlighted until follow-up investigations are completed. Payouts will be reported to the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission after the comment period ends. Any new investigation that may result will not delay payouts for others.
News All award winners are required to be current year (2010) AQHA and KyQHA members. Any winner who is not a member will be notified via regular mail and highlighted in yellow on the website so that his or her memberships can be updated.
Important message to Owners of Dual-Registered Paint Racehorses The following message was released by the Oklahoma Quarter Horse Racing Association regarding names of dual-registered horses. As of July 1, 2010 Paints which are double-registered with the American Quarter Horse Association must race with the same name in both registries for Equibase to track their performance record. THIS ONLY AFFECTS THOSE HORSES THAT HAVE A DIFFERENT NAME AT BOTH ASSOCIATIONS. The details are listed below. Please contact Karen Utecht, Director of Racing for the American Paint Horse Association if this applies to any of your Paint horses. We will be glad to assist any of our racing owners in getting this corrected so you do not have any delay in your racing schedule. Karen Utecht, Director of Racing American Paint Horse Association (817) 222-6444 or e-mail: kutecht@apha.com Important message to owners of Dual Registered Quarter Horse or Paint racehorses: If you currently own or are racing a horse that is dual registered, or that can be dual registered with both breed associations you need to be aware of a recent change instituted by Equibase as of July 1, 2010. ALL
Page 13
DUAL REGISTERED HORSES with different names in each breed registry will only be allowed to race under the Quarter Horse name as Equibase has removed the Paint names from their system. Even if your horse has different names and is only racing in Paint races - the Paint name will no longer be available in the system and the overnight and racing program will only have the Quarter Horse name available. In some instances we have identified horses that will have to change both the Paint and Quarter Horse name because it is not available in one or other of the registries. In Oklahoma, the rules of racing will not permit those horses to race under the Quarter Horse name if different from the Paint name, even in a Paint race, unless the horse has previous race performance as a Quarter Horse. In the other states, the horses entered with the Paint name (even in Paint races) will not be recognized by the Incompass racing office software or by Equibase because it has been eliminated from their systems. If you own a racing horse, or have yearlings or weanlings that do not have exactly the same name in both registries please contact either Marilyn Honea in the racing department at AQHA at 806-3764811 or Karen Utecht at APHA 817-222-6444. It appears that every dual-registered horse will be required to have exactly the same name recorded with both breed registries to be able to race. New Association Lets Riders Show & Ride Locally To Win Year-End Awards For Immediate Release: A newly formed association, The National
Ride And Show Association (NRSA), is a revolutionary idea in riding and showing that allows its members to show what they want to show throughout the year and still be eligible for year-end awards including Top Ten Circuit awards and trophy buckles. “The idea is for members to pick and choose what and when they want to show, and to encourage time in the saddle similar to some of the Ride programs other associations offer,” says NRSA founder Laurie Cerny. “It’s allows people to more casually compete throughout the year and ride their horses recreationally, and at the same time still be eligible for some nice year-end awards.” Cerny, who is the publisher of Green Horsekeeping Magazine and owner of One Horse Press, has shown open and breed and discipline approved shows throughout her 35 years of horse ownership. She hopes NRSA will help to support local horse shows and activities. “In the Midwest we’ve seen several longstanding show circuits fold because of low numbers at their horse shows,” Cerny said. “Gone are the days when the average horse owner, who wants to show, can commit to showing a dozen horse shows during the summer in order to be eligible for year-end awards.”

Greetings, INDIANA QUARTER HORSE RACING Fans! We have a lot to share with you about what’s happened recently as well as what’s to come with Quarter Horse Racing in Indiana ... With the Indiana Downs meet coming to a close, we’ve packed up and moved to Hoosier Park in Anderson. At press time, our fall meet is well underway and everything is going pretty smoothly... NEW GROUND AT HOOSIER PARK In the past, the inside of the track (1,2,3,4 post positions) has always been a little deeper, making it undesirable to draw an inside post. With this in mind, our QHRAI leadership team met with the Hoosier Park officials about what they can do to make the track surface a “more even” or “level playing field” so to speak. The grounds crew went to work right away and thus far, they’ve been successful, the outside of the track, (5,-10 post positions) which typically is very firm, almost hard and the extreme outside, was much softer, a little deeper and this made the track much more even. As a result, we’ve seen more races won from the inside (remarkably, at press time there were more wins from the 1 and 2 hole than any other position!) than we might normally see. Thanks to our leadership team for getting this taken care of before the meet began! ROOT FOR YOUR FAVORITES It’s a horse race for our leading jockey title!! The current leader is multiple leading rider title holder, Harold Collins with Shanley Jackson, who had the lead early, close on his heels followed by Aaron Hunt. It’s exciting to see these brave riders competing for the title, race by race! Come root for your favorite, they love to see their fans cheering them on, race night! The current leading trainer again, multiple leading trainer title holder, Ron Raper with a healthy lead over the others. With most horses only having one race (at press time) it’s too soon to call a leading horse yet, but we’ll be sure to give you some names in out next newsletter. HOOSIER HORSE LEADER We’re hoping to begin a new “Hoosier Horse Leader” division which will be leading money earning horse that is TOTALLY HOOSIER. Trained by and Indiana trainer, owned by and Indiana resident, bred in Indiana, and sired by an Indiana Sire. This horse will be the epitome of what any Hoosier can have, racing right here in Indiana!

News Greely Adds Touch of Class to Hoosier Park Racing Program Hoosier Park Racing & Casino has a change at the helm of the racing program this season. Kevin Greely is the new Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing secretary and his expertise and excitement for the sport has already been detected. “I’m very excited to join the racing staff at Hoosier Park,” said Greely. “I’m looking forward to this new challenge. It is also refreshing to hear that Hoosier Park is looking to improve the quality of racing, and I’m pleased to be involved in that process.” Greely comes from a family deeply imbedded in the Thoroughbred horse racing industry. Both his great grandfather, John J. Greely, and his grandfather, John J. “Bud”, were trainers. His father, Bill, held several positions at Keeneland Racecourse, including president from 1986 until his retirement in 2000. His uncle, Bud, oversees operations for Wintergreen Stallion Station in Versailles, Ky. A native of Lexington, Ky., Greely most recently served as vice president of racing and racing secretary at Arlington Park for the past four years and is currently the assistant racing secretary at Gulfstream Park. He also served as a member of the North American Ratings committee, which assigns an international handicap rating to all horses racing in stakes worth $75,000 or more in North America. Prior to his position at Arlington Park, Greely served as racing secretary for just over 11 years for the Emirates Racing Association/
Page 18
Dubai Racing Club in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Greely oversaw the racing programs for five race courses in the U.A.E. In addition, he served on the Dubai World Cup committee, which organized the entire program for the Dubai World Cup and supporting races. He was clerk of the course of Nad al Sheba Racecourse, home of the Dubai World Cup. Greely has also served in various official positions at tracks such as Churchill Downs, Fair Grounds, Keeneland, Ellis Park and Turfway Park prior to his move to Dubai in 1994. Greely’s family still resides in the Chicago area. He and his wife, Rhonda, have been married for more than 26 years. They have three children, Erin, who works for a public relations firm in Chicago, Garrett, who is a junior at Louisiana Tech studying environmental science, and 12-year-old Bennett, who is active in baseball and football. “I love it here,” said Greely. “I like the people here a lot. I like the people I work for, the people I work with, and the horsemen. It’s been great to see how well the entries have filled up to this point. It’s also nice to see good horses coming in to run here out of Illinois and Kentucky. It just goes to show if the money is there, they will come in to run.” Racing fans at Hoosier Park have seen some subtle changes in the racing program this season. Several new stables are on the grounds, mainly from the Chicago circuit, including recognizable trainers Frank Kirby, Moises Yanez, and Mark Cristel. Also, more races are being contested around two turns compared to past years when the scale tipped toward a majority of sprints. With the purse money escalated due to casino operations at Hoosier Park, the racing product is growing and appears to be moving to the next level.

One To gh Dude
Sets New Track Record at Hoosier Park One Tough Dude and 2009 leading Quarter Horse rider Harold Collins established a new track record in the $20,000 Quarter Horse allowance Saturday, Aug. 14. The duo covered the 400-yard distance in a time of :19.948 to squeeze into the top time ever contested at Hoosier Park Racing & Casino for the sprint. The prior record of :19.963 was set last year by Wild Choice and rider Noe Garcia in the $75,000 QHRAI Derby. Starting from the hot post position two in the 10-horse lineup, One Tough Dude scooted out of the gate quickly and had the top spot in his control within just a few strides. The four-year-old gelded son of Corona Cartel continued to pick up steam heading to the wire and began to drift slightly to the outside as he cleared his opponents. In the final half of the race, Goooolazo and Juan Delgado was the only horse that could threaten One Tough Dude. In the end, One Tough Dude held gamely for the win, defeating Goooolazo by one-half length. Hezfastforthecash and Carter Riley earned third place honors. “I’ve galloped him (One Tough Dude) a few times in the morning and worked him a couple of times, but this is the first time I’ve had the opportunity to ride him in a race,” said Collins. “He’s easy to handle and does everything right. I’ve ridden two horses now for the owner and the trainer and had two wins, so we’re off to a good start.” Owned by Hector Manuel Belloso, One Tough Dude recently entered the Denny Bland barn. The sorrel gelding finished second in his last start one-half length back in the $70,000 Indiana Downs Classic. One Tough Dude has been solid in every start, pushing his career earnings to nearly $90,000. The Oklahoma-bred has five wins in 14 career starts. “I picked up this horse (One Tough Dude) for the Indiana Downs meet this spring,” said Bland, who is a native of Pendleton, Ind. “He’s a nice horse, and it’s nice to have a horse like this in my barn.” Bland has started off the season with strong statistics, winning two races in only five tries. He began as a trainer in the early 2000s with Thoroughbreds and now includes Quarter Horses under his care. Collins also earned a win in the race before One Tough Dude by piloting Eyes Got Hope in the $25,500 allowance event. The North Carolina native is currently tied atop the standings with Shanley Jackson with four wins each. Collins is among the top three riders all time at Hoosier Park with 31 wins. He has numerous stakes win to his credit and recently finished third in the standings at Indiana Downs. Collins won the title at Hoosier Park in 2007 and 2009. “I rode a few races this winter down in North Carolina, but mainly I just broke yearlings,” said Collins. “I just waited for the Indiana Downs meet this spring to get back into riding.” For more information on Hoosier Park Racing & Casino, log onto www.hoosierpark.com. News Delgado Having Banner Year in Quarter Horse Racing
“It is a lot harder and different in Miami,” said Delgado. “I did not know anyone at first. You have to know someone to start with, and in Florida, I knew no one. So, it was harder to get business.”
By Rachel McLaughlin
Obviously, Delgado worked hard enough to get that business. As a reward, he won the leading jockey title.
Oscar Delgado has been welltraveled since leaving Hoosier Park last fall. The 23-year-old Quarter Horse jockey has been among the top jockeys in that category for the past three years, and he is just getting started. With four years of racing experience, Delgado hopes to have a promising year and do as well as he did in past Indiana seasons. Delgado grew up in Mexico where his father, grandfather, brother and cousins raced horses. When he was younger, he was afraid of horses. However, since that time, his fear for horses has been replaced with determination. “My brother (Juan) kept telling me one day I would ride,” said Delgado. “I didn’t think so, but he was right. I get thrown pretty badly sometimes, but it just drives me to try harder and win.” Delgado’s brother, Juan, helped him with his transition into racing in the United States. The Delgado brothers both have great skills when it comes to riding. In 2008, each won leading jockey titles with the younger Delgado winning the title at Mount Pleasant Meadows and the older brother securing the title at Hoosier Park. “It’s fun when we’re neck and neck in a race,” said Delgado. “Racing with my brother is fun. I always try to beat him. I never make it easy for anyone to win, even my brother.” And winning is what Delgado has been doing. Last week, Delgado gave up several opportunities in the QHRAI Stallion Service Auction Futurity trials and a chance to qualify for the $100,000 final to ride in one stake race at Fairmount Park. His decision paid off. Delgado won the $100,000 Quarter Horse Stakes Saturday, Aug. 7, marking one of the biggest wins of his career. He also has a race of equal value to his credit from Mount Pleasant Meadows in Michigan. In addition to stakes wins, Delgado has several leading Quarter Horse jockey titles to his credit. The most recent award was won at Hialeah Park in Miami, the first Quarter Horse meet to ever be contested at the historic track. With the competition fierce for the inaugural season, winning the title was no easy feat for Delgado.
Page 21
Delgado’s attitude about his career is very impressive. He is aware that the business has ups and downs. “Sometimes you are up, and the next thing you know, you’re down,” said Delgado. “You just don’t look back. You keep working and moving forward.”
Delgado is showing that he will be coming back this year as strong as ever. With his family history and support, Delgado will be sure to have an impressive year at Hoosier Park.
PURSE INCREASE IMPLEMENTED TODAY AT HOOSIER PARK RACING AND CASINO Anderson, IND. (Aug. 11, 2010) - Hoosier Park Racing & Casino
announced a purse increase effective Wednesday, Aug. 11 for the 2010 Thoroughbred racing season, which continues through Sunday, Oct. 24. An average increase of nine percent will now be recognized in six middle class conditions. Hoosier Park has been working closely with the Indiana Horse Racing Commission and the Indiana Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association (HBPA) regarding the racing program. Randy Klopp, president of the Indiana HBPA, recently requested a review of purses in middle class races in conjunction with the early implementation of the 2011 Thoroughbred Breed Development program approved by the commission. “This purse increase will further enhance Hoosier Park’s racing program by offering the highest purses in the region compared to tracks currently racing,” said Jeff Smith, general manager of racing. “This is also an excellent way to reward the horsemen that compete at our facility.” The purse structure was greatly elevated by added money from casino operations heading into the 2010 racing season. Total purse distribution will now average more than $235,000 per day for the meet. More than $15 million will be distributed through purses for both Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing during the 63-day meet this year. Hoosier Park Racing & Casino in Anderson, Ind., is central Indiana’s premier entertainment destination, featuring 2,000 electronic gaming devices; Standardbred, Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing; and wholecard simulcasting. Hoosier Park Racing & Casino is a wholly owned property of Centaur Gaming, which also owns and operates Fortune Valley Hotel and Casino in Central City, Colo., and is working to develop Valley View Downs in western Pennsylvania. Hoosier Park also provides simulcast-wagering facilities in Indianapolis, Fort Wayne and Merrillville, Ind. For more information, visit www. hoosierpark.com.

I think I am allergic to...... This past week has been another tough one for yours truly. At first I thought it was the dry summer that we’ve been having, but then I began to wonder. It all started about a week ago....the itching and the red skin. All I could think about is.....scratch, scratch, scratch...dig, dig dig and then scratch some more. Obsessed was a good word. I’ve heard that a lot since this all started. But believe me, I couldn’t figure out was was going on and my people were definitely noticing that something needed done. I know I was beginning to drive my people crazy with the constant “cat scratching.” (They call it that when I rub my back on the bottom of one of their boots...usually when they have a leg crossed and their boot is at the perfect level for me to get in a good back scratch. They say I look like a cat when I do that, hence the name “cat scratching”......I don’t care what they call it, but it feels soooo good!)
Page 23
This itchy feeling, however, was not easily relieved with your typical “cat scratching.” It quickly became a constant irritation for me. All day, everyday ...itching...scratching ...itching...scratching ...itching... scratching. I found myself rubbing along the underside of the truck, the car, the horse trailer.....they are all the perfect height for me to scratch my back, scratch my back (there’s that obsession again.) The downfall with the “under the vehicle back scratching” is the black greasy stripe that goes along with the short term relief. The black greasy stripe led to a couple of baths and a couple of “Oh, Bella! You’re filthy!” remarks from the people. I do have to say that my people were on top of the itching issue. It didn’t take them long to start the bathing and ointment treatments. And of course the “Here, Bella, want a treat?” trick. The trick being there is a nasty tasting doggy pill from the vet mixed inside of a piece of bologna. Of course, I can’t resist a piece of bologna....even if it is supposed to be “good” for me. As of today, I am scheduled to visit my vet for a follow up to see how I am coming along. Although my people are still not sure if it is allergies or something else, I honestly think it is stress related. Stress brought on by one whole year of exposure to a little “black bark box” named Annabelle - AKA -“Annie” around these parts. I’m calling this condition “Stress related “ANNERGIES.” I’m gonna squeeze in a nap..... until next month....

Indiana 2010 NBHA State Championships
The 2010 Indiana NBHA State Championship Show was held July 8th through July 10th. National Barrel Horse Association members from across Indiana and several other states, along with a host of barrel racing fans, filled up the Hoosier Horse Park’s beautiful facility. Hoosier Horse Park is located just outside of Edinburg, Indiana and is a great place to host a barrel race of this magnitude. With this being the 18th time Indiana has held an NBHA State Championship show, they know how to do it up right. Indiana’s NBHA State Director and recently appointed NBHA Regional Director, Bob Hess, along with a staff of District Directors and other volunteers had the stage set for a funfilled weekend of firsts. From a live auction to a dunk tank and corn hole tournament, not to mention some super exciting barrel racing, there was plenty to keep a person entertained. The main event was held again this year inside the Baker Covered Arena. This year’s extremely fast times were a direct reflection on the ground crew. The track held great for over 1500 runs! Thanks to Clint Crider and Tommy Lynch who spent their weekend “Workin’ It” with the Reveal 4N1 tools in tow. While the ground crew was doing their thing, the staff had some quick games to keep the crowd around during the “big drags.” A three legged race, an egg toss and a hula hoop contest gave spectators a chance at some fun as well as some prizes.
Page 24
This year’s event brought out well over 600 contestants who were competing for over $38,000 in prize money (over $13,500 was in added money), twelve trophy saddles, twelve reserve belt-buckles, forty-eight jackets, breast collars, halters and much more. Brent Puhl of Puhl’s Photography was on hand to capture action photos and video of every barrel racer.
LETS GET IT STARTED
Opening ceremonies brought out “Old Glory” and our National Anthem. All of the youth contestants were given frisbees for a frisbee toss to kick off the first day of barrel racing. Before the day was over, there would be 265 contestants charge through the alleyway on their way to a possible paycheck and qualification to the Sunday Finals Short Go. The only other way for a spot in the Finals Short Go was by entering, and then being lucky enough to win, the “Free Ride to the Finals.” All contestants had the option of putting their name in a drawing (before the event started ) to win a spot in the Finals. All it took was $20 and a little luck. There seemed to be a certain theme forming as the race’s results were called out each
day. Repeats. There seemed to be several contestants riding to the pay window more than once, some on the same horse and some on multiple horses. There were also many names in the results who are former State Champions. Oh, and it also didn’t hurt if your last name was Patrick.
THURSDAY -YOUTH FIRST GO
The theme started to take shape on Thursday afternoon, July 8th. This would be the first time Cheyanna Patrick from District 02 heard her name called out during the weekend. She posted the fastest Youth First Go time out of the 151 competitors, a 15.260, riding her mare she calls “Filly.” There were only four others in the 1D, they were Cali Jayne Moriarty, Lane Edwards, Shelby Headley and former Youth State Champion, Jennifer Lichtenbarger. The Youth First Go 2D was won by Jessica Cunningham riding her horse Real Dealer, AKA “Dealer.” The duo posted a 15.764 and were closely followed by Shelby Headley with her “second dip” in the pot riding Midge who posted a 15.771. Youth 3D places for Thursday were dominated by District 04 in all but one of the placings. The first three places wer Donovan Smith was riding Im a Rare Lady to a 16.265, Caitlyn Bowman and Flittin Pass You and Tyler Stanley. Fourth went to the only “non-District 04” of the group, Jessica Cuningham, who drew her second check of the day riding GVS Champagne Nik. was third with Iroc Z Boat. The 4D went to Bernard Wieling riding CT Cole, followed by Lynn Roorda and Priscilla Genest-Magee.
FRIDAY - YOUTH SECOND GO
Friday morning brought the Youth Second Go (this time in reverse order.) Those who had not qualified the day before had just one more shot to get qualified to the Finals Short Go. Trevor Pruitt riding Walts Rock N Roll made their first appearance on the leader board with a fast 15.001 to take first place in the 1D. Clint Van Volkenburgh and Bob were right on Trevor’s heels with a 15.012 for second. Donovan Smith drew his second check of the event on Im A Rare Lady, moving up into the 1D for a third place finish. Last year’s trailer winner, Emma Gutzweiler was fourth riding Blue Golds Shadow and Kayla Cunningham (Jessica’s Beth Marsh & Dun Got Paid, “Dusty” were crowned the sister) guided Renes Honda to fifth. 2010 Indiana NBHA Open 2D Champions. Chalee Gilliland was second and another repeat to the pay window was Ashley Harlan, this time riding Afton Dons Express.
OPEN FIRST GO
Todd Holder left many asking, “Was that a 14.4?” or “Who ran that?” Todd and his great mount, Fame In A Tin Can posted a breathtaking 14.448, besting the field of 393 Open First Go riders by two tenths. Todd’s run was definitely the talk of the day on Friday. Right after Todd’s name was called, there was a line of “repeat winners.” The closest to Todd was Trevor Pruitt riding his Congress winning black gelding by Roll the Cash, Walts Rock N Roll. Trevor’s time was a 14.685. Terri Harvey and her

FIRSTS FOR FUN
A Director’s barrel race was held at the end of the Open Second Go and was followed by several new events for the Indiana State Show. One form of entertainment that had been present all weekend for those who wanted to find something to do in between their runs was the DUNK TANK! Terrie VanVolkenburgh rented the Dunk Tank to have some fun and raise some cash for the NBHA Youth heading to the 2010 NBHA Youth World. Three balls for one dollar to try and dunk the brave volunteers. It was a great way to raise money and it kept several people occupied and cooled off during the heat of the day. Many people volunteered to get “dunked” including Terrie herself and her son, Clint VanVolkenburgh. The list of volunteers was a long one and included Todd Holder, Wayne Stapleton, Chris Duke, Brad Roorda and Vick Conway to name just a few. A Live Auction was held just in front of the Announcer’s booth and all of the items sold were donated by members or sponsors. A variety of items from stud fees to ball caps went to the highest bidder. Tye Casey of Athletic Style Ranch called bids and when the bidding was finished, all of the proceeds were then donated for Breast Cancer Research in honor of “Tough Enough to Wear Pink” day. The highest selling item was a custom made electronic picture frame donated by Puhl’s Photography that sold for $300. Later on that evening there was also a Corn Hole Tournament for anyone who wanted to enter. Teams had the opportunity to enter for a fee and a bracket system was used to

The Senior classes paid out a total of $5,580, $2,232 of which went to the Short Go. When the dust settled, Valerie Daunhauer riding her super nice gelding, Grander Smith, with a time of 14.696 became the 2010 Senior 1D State Champion. Valerie purchased Grand from her sister, Donna, and has been competing on him for the last 12 years and this was Valerie’s first trophy saddle.

SUNDAY - FINALS DAY
Sunday morning started out with Church Services at 7:30 with Donna and Vernon Charles, District 02 Director(s) leading a great message.
YOUTH FINALS
The Youth classes for the weekend had a total payout of $8,285 and the Short Go portion was $3,314. Trevor Pruitt riding his horse Walts Rock N Roll turned in a time of 14.617 to win the title of NBHA Youth State Champions for 2010. Trevor has had an outstanding year with this great horse. Cali Jayne Moriarty was Reserve Champion on Ima Maga Scotcha. The horse known as “Mr Dependable” took Cheyanna Patrick to her first win picture of the day on Sunday. Global Bug ran a 15.207 to win the 2D Youth Champion title. Cheyanna’s family has owned Global Bug since he was a yearling. He raced on the track and then was started on barrels by Cheyanna’s mom, Cindy. Reserve 2D Youth Champion was Jessica
The 2D Senior Championship was won by Mary Freels riding Dinkys Honor Bar, Lucy, with a time of 15.220. Mary has barrel raced her whole life and has only been riding Lucy for six months. Lucy was purchased by Don Hackerson from Mary’s daughter. Don asked Mary to continue riding Lucy and she is very grateful to him for the opportunity. “Lucy has a great personality and seems to really love her job. She is just fun to ride and be around.” Reserve 2D Senior Champion was Bev Jungels riding Hi Speed Guaranteed. Cindy Patrick wasn’t going to go home without a saddle to match her daughter’s. Cindy and “Streaker,” whose registered name is Easy Streakin Native ( he is by Rolls of Romance) turned in a time of 15.793. Cindy and her husband, Gary, own and train race horses between Indiana and Florida. The family resides in Florida during the winter time. Streaker was was in their racing program (like most of their barrel horses) until Cindy decided to start him on barrels. “I became interested in barrel racing at the age of five while watching the Pro Rodeo at Wichita Falls, Texas.” Sherry Oakerson and her horse Dart claimed the 3D Reserve Champion title.
Indiana 2010 NBHA State Championships
The 4D Senior Championship went to Steven Cole riding Tonkas Hooter, “Hootie,” with a time of 17.324. Steve raised Hootie and rode him until he was a three year old, then due to Steve’s health Hootie was turned out for about five years. Steve had to quit showing due to a brain aneurism, but because he loved the sport and missed all the people so much he started back. Steve has been very successful in the NBHA, with nine Indiana NBHA Championships, a Great Lakes Senior 1D Championship, and one NBHA Senior 1D World Championhip (twice Reserve.)
OPEN FINALS
The Open classes had a total payout of $24,506. The Short Go Finals portion of that totaled $9,802.40. Cheyanna Patrick riding her super mare, Hays Victory Eye, saved her best run and the best run of the weekend for the Finals. Cheyanna and “Filly” shut the clock off at a blistering 14.217. The mare that was bought out of a sale for $500 has paid for herself many, many times over. Not knowing much about her when they bought her, other than she had qualified for the AQHA World in Poles as a three-year old, the Patrick’s really had no idea where this speedy mare was going take their daughter. The team has made several recent trips to the winner’s circle, including a recent win at the All American Youth Barrel Race. Cheyanna stated her mom Cindy has influenced her most in her barrel racing style.
Page 28
“The most memorable thing about the event was that I had five nice clean runs and they were getting smoother and faster every time.” When asked what she was going to do with her prizes and the prize money, she stated the money will go in the bank and she will most likely ride in her saddles. Trevor Pruitt claimed the Reserve 1D Championship title and buckle in the Open by running a 14.345 on Walts Rock N Roll. The 2D Open Championship was won by Beth Marsh and her super nice gelding Dun Got Paid with a time of 14.720. “He has the personality of a person. He is just fun and funny to watch. He loves twizzlers.” Beth purchased Dusty from Brad Roorda after good friends, Paul and Tyler Martin, told her about him. Dusty was the perfect horse to fill some big shoes of Beth’s previous horse, Dyno. She would like to thank the people who have offered advice for her and her horses throughout the years. The Open 2D Reserve Champion for 2010 was Dennis Miller riding Maverick. The 3D Open Champion was Jessica Cunningham riding her gorgeous sorrel gelding, Real Dealer. They ran a time of 15.232. “He is a gentle giant that loves attention and sticks his tongue out and makes everyone laugh.” Jessica gives credit to her mom, Angie, for teaching her everything she knows about barrel racing.
Cindy Patrick riding Global Bug earned another award for the trophy case with their 3D Reserve Championship buckle. (“Mr Dependable” does sound like a fitting nickname for him.) 4D Open winner was Ashley Harlan riding Afton Dons Express with a time of 16.234. “Afton is easy to get along with and loves to be loved on.” Ashley’s dad and mom, Carl and Cindy, gave her Afton and they just clicked. She has ridden Afton for three years. When not barrel racing, Ashley loves to trail ride, swim and spend time with her friends. Kenny De Hart and C J Blackburn won the 4D Reserve title. Find out on the results page or visit www. mcdiamond.com and click on Indiana NBHA to find a full list of results. Thanks to all of the sponsors of this event. Thanks to the organizers, workers and directors. Without all of you, this show would not be a success. When asked what advice he would give to someone putting on a show of this magnitude, Bob Hess had this to say... Surround yourself with professionals... Announcer, Timer, Secretary and Arena Footing Crew.” See ya next year.

CHRISTIAN COWBOY COLLECTION
w/ Christa Conway
“Recalculating.....” Technology. You have to love it. When I was running up and down the road, chasing the rodeos, we didn’t have GPS. Well, there may have been GPS available, but we didn’t have it. (And it really hasn’t been THAT long ago.... now I’m telling my age.) I wondered what cowboys and cowgirls did before cell phones. Now they wonder what we did before GPS. (We used an atlas and the first convenience store or gas station that looked safe enough to walk inside and ask someone where we could find the rodeo in their town.) These days, when you need to get somewhere, you just type it in your GPS and get step by step instructions as you need them on how to arrive at your destination....the estimated time it will take, shortest route....Interstate or the scenic route....all choices you are given. You can even get directions to the nearest Cracker Barrel or hotel with a pool. GPS has most likely saved many arguments created by a misread atlas or a navigator who accidentally fell asleep. The thing that cracks me up about GPS is when a driver makes a wrong turn, GPS doesn’t get upset and question their driving ability (like most people sitting shotgun would)....it simply says “Recalculating.” And within seconds new directions are given for the “new” best route to the destination. This, to me is the best part of the GPS. It reminds me that we can still get where we want to go....we just have to take a little
different or maybe a little longer...maybe a little out of the way...route to get there.
acronym, but stand for different parts of the system.
Now, if we would turn the GPS off at this point and continue down the unknown road to “Lostville,” then we only have ourselves to blame. Anyone can take a wrong turn now and then....and as long as you have are willing to listen to the directions that will put you back on track...(most of the time) then “No harm no foul.”
#1 - GPS stands for “God’s Perfect Son” JESUS - God’s perfect son who came to earth as a man, was crucified as the final sacrifice, was resurrected and ascended into heaven -beating death and giving those who believe in him the gift of salvation.
Of course this relates greatly to our Christian walk! Oh how many times I have thought....”OK, I’ve got it all together and I know where I am going. My eyes are on God, my attitude is positive, I have no worries.” And then..... WHOA!! Missed a turn! Next thing I know, I am aggravated, unfocused and headed to “Lostville.” When this happens and I find myself headed the wrong direction in life, God doesn’t tell me how bad of a “driver” I am.....he simply says “Recalculating.” Now, I could choose to keep ignoring the “new” directions for as long as I want... but God will always have a plan for my next step, should I finally choose to listen. He has provided us with the best “GPS” ever made to get us back on track. His GPS “system” is no new technology, has been around for a long, long time and has led millions of people to their final destination. Best of all, it is FREE!! There are three different parts that make up this GPS. They all use the same
Last & most important thought… Salvation is a gift and a choice...... Jesus died on the cross as the final sacrifice. When He was resurrected on the 3rd day, he defeated Satan for us. All we have to do is believe that He beat death and acknowledge it with our words. If we believe that and accept Him as our personal savior…we are promised eternal life with Him in Heaven. You can’t earn your way into Heaven; you have to believe your way there. So many people think they “aren’t good enough” to get to Heaven… But… Salvation is a GIFT from God and you don’t earn a gift. Gifts are something someone gives to you and for the gift to be yours, you have to accept it. All we have to do is accept that wonderful gift. I know I have…won’t you?
Page 45
#2 - GPS stands for “God’s Precious Spirit” HOLY SPIRIT - The “comforter” sent from Jesus after his ascension so that we (as believers) have the Spirit of God residing within us. That little voice that lets you know “do it” or “don’t do it” is usually the Holy Spirit.....whether we listen or not is up to us. #3 - GPS stands for “God’s Personal Scripture” THE BIBLE - “The Word of God,” “The Sword,” “The Living Word” .... God’s instructions to us are sometimes hard to understand, but the more time we will spend reading and praying in His Word, the more we will find that it applies to us personally. If I take a moment to spend a little time listening to the GPS that God has provided for me, I am quickly back on the right path to my destination. Lessons learned and memories made become a part of who I am and will help me the next time I “take a wrong turn. “ Until next month.... Take the scenic route....just make sure it is the one provided by God’s GPS! Happy Trails & God Bless! Christa
But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. Romans 5:15 For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Romans 10: 9-10

Mystery of the Month.... T
his month’s mystery cowboy comes to us from somewhere in the 1970s?? We can tell you that this little fella is shown with a horse named “Sugar Baby” in all three photos. Sugar Baby was ridden by his siblings as well and eventually would be ridden by three generations. The picture to the left is while our cowboy was in grade school. He was too young to be a jockey, but got to ride at the bush tracks in Illinois. Showing his versatility, he is below in a Western Class as well as a Halter class. Today our mystery cowboy is still very involved in the horse industry. Tell us the correct identity of this cowboy and win your choice of a one year subscription to The Horse Resource or a “Horsey-T!” Send us in your pictures from years past of a cowboy or cowgirl that someone else may be able to identify to win a Free subscription or “Horsey T.” And...KEEP those pictures coming!!! I’m running very low on the mystery pictures......and we don’t want to run out of fun. Whose picture would you love to see in here? Mail it in to us! We’ll return any originals that are sent regular mail....or email them to us at thehorseresource@msn.com. Good Luck!
We Have A Winner!
This month’s winner is Margaret Andrew of Bedford, Kentucky. Margaret knew the “Cowboy Legs” featured in out August issue’s Mystery of the Month belonged to Todd Holder. Margaret had this to say about Todd, “ My husband and I have known Todd and his parents for over 25 years and he has ridden several horses for us. Todd is a very good horseman and does real well on any horse. This picture was taken at the NBHA State Show in Edinburgh, IN, and I’m sure Todd will be a good sport about it. He has a great farmer’s tan.” Todd was volunteering for the dunk tank to raise money for the NBHA youth attending the Youth World show when this picture was taken. Todd won the first go in the Open 1D at this event. He has ridden many great horses including: Tin Can Annie, Dash on Jane and currently Fame in a Tin Can. Great horseman, great sport! Thanks, Todd! Margaret chose to extend her subscription for another year as her prize for being our winner. We had several others guess correctly including Robyn Adair and Kim Stump. (Many did mistake the legs for Vick’s, it must be the “cowboy tan!”) If you have a picture of a Cowgirl or Cowboy that you would like to see featured as our Mystery of the Month. Send it via email to us at thehorseresource@msn.com or mail it to us at 12601 S. CR 200 W., Muncie, IN 47302. (ALL originals will be returned.)
Keep’em comin’! Thanks to those who have sent in Mystery Photos! Page 55
