LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

F

all is just around the corner. It’s time to start thinking about lights in the barn, winter blanket repair and coveralls. It will be here before you know it! (Sorry, I have to start preparing myself now....)

We have had a very busy month at the barn. Lots of horses to ride and lots of changes in horses and jockeys. As a mom and a barrel racer I also had one of my “best days.” Some of you will recall that I have kept a couple geldings around since my “rodeo” days. I was hoping that one day my kids could enjoy them as much as I have and the geldings could have careers with my kids until they are retired. We finally made the switch and my daughter and son are both mounted on “the boys.” My “best day” came at the second show we got to haul them to with their new teams. First and second in the Youth barrels!! I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. An this means......no retirement anytime soon for “the boys!” We’ve heard from some of our readers that they would like to receive their magazine sooner each month and we are listening. We are in the process of making some changes and hope to have things worked out by no later than our November issue to have magazines in the mail a little sooner. Please bear with us! We appreciate the feedback from our readers and we want to hear more. Constructive criticism is always welcome....and we also really do appreciate the words of encouragement and compliments. I don’t think I could ever relay how much it means to hear positive words from someone who has enjoyed reading their Horse Resource. Those emails and cards are the things that keep us going here at the office when are tails are dragging:) So, I (we) just want to say, “Thank You.” We’re working on making things better for our readers so let us know what you think. Email us at thehorseresource@msn.com to give us your thoughts. Until next month...........share some positive words with someone......... and count your blessings on horseback! God Bless and Ride Safe, Christa Conway

A Little “Barrel Talk”

More great suggestions and recipes found on Barrel Horse World’s Barrel Talk.....Enjoy! (Just remember - The Horse Resource is not endorsing these “remedies.” We recommend that you consult your veterinarian before using any home remedy on your horse.)

Three*C*Champs Posted 2011-08-23 10:55 AM Subject: Horses With Tight Muscles Posts: 7123 Location: So. Cali. What do you do for your horses with tight muscles? Ones that are prone to muscle spasms? Stretches? Massage? Flexing? Feed? Any input! SKM Posted 2011-08-23 10:59 AM Look at the feeding program first. My palomino mare gets rock hard if she is on alfalfa. Put her on grass and she softens considerably. I also put those hard muscled ones on ACV. It really does help. You can never go wrong with massage and stretching provided they are done right. It can be a lot of work to keep those hard horses soft. rachellyn80 Posted 2011-08-23 11:00 AM See when Troy Brandenburg is going to be in your area! He has helped my gelding immensely. Three*C*Champs RE: She gets soaked beet pulp twice a day. Hay/Grain pellets in the morning and alfalfa at night. Maybe just Hay/ Grain morning and night?? SKM RE: That’s probably where I would start. That would be your cheapest option and easy enough to try.

barrelracinbroke Posted 2011-08-23 11:58 AM Posts: 2444 Muscles can also be helped by some supplements such as Magnesium, Vitamin E and Selenium or Lysine. Also, feed something around 10-12% protein with added fat and not a real high protein grain. Mine are fed grass hay and Alfalfa. I don’t feed straight Alfalfa although a lot of people out here in Cali do. Is this after the horse runs? Could it be tying up possibly? StephanieNE Posted 2011-08-23 12:05 PM Posts: 6795 I agree with taking away the alfalfa. Very good place to start. Also supplementing with magnesium, selenium and vitamin E. Your vet can actually give a straight shot of E/ Se. Also giving electrolytes daily. As far as muscle relaxers, I’ve used both Robaxin and Dantrium. I prefer the dantrium. The horse didn’t seem as “zoned out”. But I don’t know if Id like to actually run a horse on dantrium. If it’s pretty severe, have your vet test his urine to find out why he’s tying up. Three*C*Champs RE: She has not actually tyed up (and by that I mean stretching out and holding her back legs up). She’s had muscles spasms just standing in her stall eating, and recently after being lounged. She’s had off and on lameness, randomly in both fronts, has been seen and xrayed by vet. She hates her right lead, and will sometimes not want to extend. No matter how long she sits, have

given her over a month off, she always looks FIT, never gets fat. She seems very tight in her shoulder area. I have recently started stretching her, and yesterady got a battery powered massager which she loved. I did have her on Vit E & Selenium Crumbles, she was doing good. Will go get some more today. Also will try removing her from Alfalfa pellets. She is not on any sweet feed. Occasionally gets just rolled oats. StephanieNE RE: It still sounds like a form of tying up. Sounds like you’re doing the right things so far! Horses that tend to get tight really benefit from exercise everyday- if you have a big pasture you can turn her out in everday, or ride her everyday-that would help a bunch if tight muscles are truly what’s bothering her. chaseingcans Posted 2011-08-23 1:29 PM Posts: 1594 See when Troy Brandenburg is going to be in your area! He has helped my gelding immensely. My mare has tight Muscles also. Troy will be working on her in 3 weeks again. I can tell you Troy can help your horse. My mare LOVES Troy. I get him to work on her in the Spring and fall.

News JOCKEY CRITICALLY INJURED IN HOOSIER PARK QUARTER HORSE RACE

The Strategic Planning Session is by invitation only, limited to Kentucky equine association leaders or their representatives, saddle clubs, and university equine programs.

Anderson, Ind.; -August 24, 2011- Jockey, Richard Gilliard, was critically

Breed and discipline representatives from across the state participated in a leaders meeting in May to set the stage for this strategic planning session.

injured during the conclusion of Tuesday night’s 10th and final race at Hoosier Park Racing & Casino. The injuries were inflicted when his horse, MCM He Be Azoomin, drifted out and ran into the paddock entry rail upon crossing the finish line in the 350-yard dash for two-year-old Quarter Horses.

Gilliard was stabilized by the Hoosier Park emergency medical staff and then transported to St. John’s Hospital in Anderson, Indiana. He was later air lifted to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Indianapolis. Gilliard remains in critical condition and under the care of St. Vincent’s medical staff. “Richard’s family has been notified of the situation and they are traveling from South Carolina to join him at St. Vincent’s Hospital.” said Brian Elmore, Hoosier Park’s general manager of racing. “The thoughts and prayers of all of us go out to Richard and his family at this time. We are waiting for further information regarding his condition” Hoosier Park Racing & Casino, an integrated gaming and racing facility, offers 2,000 slots and electronic table games as well as both live and simulcast Standardbred and Thoroughbred racing. KY Horse Council Leads Strategic Planning Session for Equine Industry Kentucky’s horses are often referred to as a “signature industry”, providing the Commonwealth with an identity that goes beyond state and national borders. Horses provide Kentuckians thousands of jobs, millions in tax revenue to the Commonwealth, and hours of pleasure for Kentucky horsemen and women. Despite the size and impact of the industry, Kentucky does not engage routinely in long-term strategic planning of initiatives to benefit all breeds and equestrian disciplines. The Kentucky Horse Council (KHC) hosts a Kentucky Equine Strategic Planning Session on September 24, 2011. KHC seeks the involvement of all equine associations throughout the Commonwealth for this important process. “This planning effort to develop initiatives for the benefit of all owners, riders, and breeders is something that is a natural fit for the Kentucky Horse Council”, says Anna Zinkhon, President of the KHC Board. “The event will not only support the industry and the Commonwealth, but will also help to unify the community, which has been known to be fragmented into different interest groups. When we all work together and speak as one voice, we are much more effective,” Zinkhon continued. The objective of the planning session is the development of key industry improvement initiatives. The Kentucky Horse Council, with equine association participation, will implement these projects over the next five years.

News Federal Racing Medication Bill Introduced The racing industry has been debating the use of medications in racing, particularly on race-day, for some time. Congress got into the debate in May when Senator Tom Udall (D-NM) and Congressman Ed Whitfield (R-KY) introduced the Interstate Horseracing Improvement Act of 2011. The bill would would ban “performance-enhancing drugs” in racing, require testing of horses, and call for minimum penalties for violations. The bill defines “performance-enhancing drugs” broadly to include any substance capable of affecting a horse’s performance. By including the federal changes within the Interstate Horseracing Act it applies the new prohibitions to all races subject to an interstate wager. In effect, this means nearly every race in the country. The bill includes prohibitions on both individuals and race tracks. A person may not provide a horse with a performance-enhancing drug or enter it in a race if it will compete with the drug in its system. A race track may not conduct a race subject to an interstate off-track wager unless the track has a policy in place that bans a person from providing a horse with a performance-enhancing drug, the track bans all horses under the influence of such a drug, and the track requires an accredited laboratory to test the winner of each race and another horse. The legislation calls for penalties of at least $5,000 and 180 days suspension for the first violation, $20,000 and one year for the second, and $50,000 and permanent suspension for a third. The horse may also be suspended.

“Mukewater Creek” Surprises in Futurity

“Mukewater Creek” Surprises in QHRAI Stallion Service Auction Futurity After finishing a head back in the trials, Mukewater Creek and Francisco Raul Ramirez Jr. were able to turn the tables on their opponents Saturday, Aug. 20, winning the $100,000 QHRAI Stallion Service Auction Futurity at Hoosier Park Racing & Casino. At 12-1 odds, the duo covered the 350-yard dash in a time of :18.090 seconds. Starting from post four, Mukewater Creek was one of the first horses to emerge from the gate as a potential leader. Several horses came out of the gate awkward, but a few steps into the race, the two-year-old son of Fly Jess Fly was the clear-cut leader and the horse to catch. One horse was within striking distance as they neared the wire. Mukewater Creek was able to fend off the late closing challenge by BPs Frisco Chick and Rodney Prescott, who were seeking to bring trainer Randy Haffner his third straight win in the Futurity. “He (Mukewater Creek) broke out goofy,” said Ramirez. “But, when he got out in front, he knew what was up. I expected him to finish strong, but this was quite a surprise. It was all the horse. He did all the work.” Owned by Antonio Saavedra, Mukewater Creek is now two for four in his brief career. Jose Baltierrez trains the Oklahoma bred colt, who now has nearly $50,000 in career earnings. “I was hoping he (Mukewater Creek) would get a clean break and get away really well and stay out of traffic,” said Baltierrez. “We were longshots, but it seems like when the odds are against us, we always seem to come out okay.” Mukewater Creek paid $27.40, $10.80, and $13.60 across the board for his win in the Futurity. The race is the richest Quarter Horse race held at Hoosier Park. This is the 14th year the race has been conducted at Hoosier Park, established one year following the inaugural season of pari-mutuel Quarter Horse racing was implemented in the state of Indiana in 1997.

“Speed Smith” Strong in QHRAI Stallion Service Auction Derby at Hoosier Park Speed Smith, ridden by Carter Riley, showed just how quick he was, romping to victory in the final strides of the $50,000 QHRAI Stallion Service Auction Derby Saturday, Aug. 20. The three-year-old colt completed the 400-yard dash in a time of :20.327 seconds. Starting from post nine, Speed Smith broke well but was not the quickest out of the gate. It took the handsome son of Prime Talent a few steps to get in gear before he began to make his move on the top ones. Midway through the dash, Speed Smith began to get calls from Track Announcer Steve Cross and he was closing quickly with every stride. Call On Linda and Rodney Prescott, last year’s QHRAI Stallion Service Auction Futurity winners, still had the advantage along the far inside a few steps from the wire. However, Speed Smith was able to track them down, putting a neck in front at the end to win the race. Talented Magician and Jeff Hogan maintained ground for third. Owned by Cesar Rosales, Speed Smith is now four for eight in 2011. The Texas-bred colt boosted his career earnings to more than $44,000 with his winning effort in the Derby. Rolando Almanza trains Speed Smith, who is now a perfect two for two over Hoosier Park’s racing strip. “I’ve ridden him (Speed Smith) now about six times and had three wins on him,” said Riley. “He’s my type of horse. I’ve liked him ever since

I saw him in the paddock down at Indiana Downs. Every time I rode him, he would pull his shoes off. Rolando (Almanza) has done a great job with him getting him straightened out. He did some shoeing changes and he’s been good. He was perfect today.” For Riley, the win was especially gratifying aboard Speed Smith. The last race he competed in two weeks ago, he took a spill following the race aboard a two-yearold and had a slight injury to his leg. This was his first race back after that incident. The time of :20.327 is the second fastest time for the QHRAI Stallion Service Auction Derby since it has been contested at Hoosier Park. Now in its 14th year at the Anderson, Ind. facility, the new stakes record was set last year with Beduino Rich and Joe Ruiz in a time of :20.194.

“One Tough Dude”

“One Tough Dude” Repeats Win in Bradford Stakes One Tough Dude, owned by Jesus Gonzalez and trained by Alonso Orozco, crossed the finish line first just as he did in the 2010 Bradford Stakes. The $75,000 added race for Open 3 year olds and up had a total purse of $85,200. Winning against some good company, the gelding by Corona Cartel finished in a 20.157 for a Speed Index of 97 with Harold Collins in the irons. Second was Stone Heading West and third was Tortuga Tony.

The conversation goes something like this: Annie: “Bark, Bark, Bark!!!” People: Annie, hush!” Annie: “Bark, Bark! Growl...” People: “Annie! Be quiet!”

O

Annie: “Bark......Bark, Bark.” People: “Ooooh, that dog!!” Annie: “Bark..........Bark.” People: “Annabelle!! Hush!!! Annie: “Bark.” People: “Why can’t you behave like Bella? And there it is.......my conformation. Of course, I already know....but it is so nice to hear it on occasion. One good thing about having the little black bark box in my shadow..... makes me look better all the time! Until next month.... Lookin’ Good.......

Preparing the Open Mare For Breeding Season

these cervical tears can be corrected with surgery. The speculum exam can also help determine if the mare is pooling urine. If the vagina is conformed in such a way that urine pools inside the vagina then some of this urine can leak into the uterus and cause a major inflammatory response and infections. Urine pooling and cervical tears cannot be diagnosed with the ultrasound. The best way to diagnose these problems is visualization with the speculum.

Article By Dr. Steve Fisch, DVM

A mare being ultrasounded by Rachel Lacey, DVM after it was determined she was not pregnant. If you look closely you can see the fluid in the uterus that is the probably the result of a uterine infection or inflammation.

I

t is September now and time to check all the pregnant mares to make sure they are all still pregnant and if any mares did not get pregnant during the spring, now is the time to find out why if that work has not already been done. Many breeders make the mistake of waiting till breeding season to “clean up” their problem mares. Most of the time that approach ends up costing them money and time. Everyone wants that early foal and if you are spending time in the spring treating infections or performing diagnostic tests then a mare that could have been pregnant in early February can quickly become a mare that doesn’t get pregnant until May or maybe not at all. The first order of business is to have a through reproductive examination performed. This includes not only an ultrasound and uterine culture but a speculum examination to determine if the mare has any abnormalities in her vagina or cervix. The ultrasound examination is done first so that the uterus can be examined for fluid, cysts and other abnormalities before the culture swab is put into the uterus. Fluid in the uterus is a clue that the mare has a uterine infection or inflammation or both. A uterine cyst is an indication that the lymphatic drainage of the uterus is blocked to some extent. The culture is performed next so that there is less chance of contamination of the culture sample versus performing it after the speculum examination. The uterine culture checks for infections in the endometrium of the uterus. Most of the time a culture with the simple procedure of inserting a sterile culture swab into the uterus will get the results needed. There will be instances when everything indicates the mare has a uterine infection but the culture always comes back negative. Sometimes these mares will benefit from the added diagnostics of infusing the uterus with a small amount of sterile fluid and then retrieving that fluid. The fluid is then centrifuged and the sediment is cultured. Some mares have tears in the cervix that don’t allow it to close properly. If the cervix can’t close properly then the uterus and the embryo or foal inside the uterus are not protected from the outside world. Many times

Page 24

Another important cause of infertility is “wind sucking” or pneumovagina. This condition is the result of the vulvar lips not closing properly or in older mares that have had several foals, the dorsal or top part of the vulva may tip inward and cause aspiration of feces when the mare defecates. Whether she is aspirating air or feces, both can cause chronic uterine infections that will result in no pregnancy or the loss of a pregnancy. This condition can be corrected with a simple surgery called a “caslick’s surgery”. With this surgery the vulva from the level of the pubic bone upward is sutured together so that the feces and air are not pulled into the vagina. This is a case of where “more is not better” because if too much of the vulva is sutured together then this will result in a reduction of urine flow outward and a backflow of urine will have been created. It is recommended that a caslick’s surgery be performed on every mare that has a history of a uterine infection whether or not she has poor vaginal/vulvar conformation.

A uterine biopsy can be of benefit to mares that have chronic problems or that have not become pregnant or have been unable to carry a pregnancy to term after several attempts. The biopsy should not be done within sixty days of breeding because the spot where the biopsy was taken needs time to heal. The biopsy gives a lot of information regarding fibrosis or scar tissue and it will give a very good indication of any inflammatory or infectious processes going on. A biopsy is an excellent diagnostic tool when time is not a critical issue. Breeding season is not the best time for a biopsy. Endoscopy of the uterus is also another tool that allows visualization of the inside of the uterus. Endoscopy is usually reserved for cases when all the other diagnostics are not yielding any results There are a few reasons that can cause a mare not to conceive or cause a reduction in her ability to carry a foal to term that must be diagnosed during breeding season and these are hormonal imbalances. Some mares need to be supplemented with progesterone to stay pregnant. A problem mare can be put on Regumate at about the ninth day of pregnancy and have a blood progesterone test pulled when she is diagnosed pregnant. The Regumate will not change the test results from the mare’s normal reading for progesterone when she is not taking Regumate. The test will give the natural progesterone levels so that it can be determined if she needs to say on the Regumate to keep her progesterone levels at a safe level. Right: Uterine biopsy punch used to obtain a small sample of uterine tissue. The uterine biopsy provides a lot of information and gives a prognosis for being able to carry the foal to term. It must be done at least 60 days before breeding.

While this approach may cost you some time now, you will be time and money ahead in 2012. You will also hopefully have the benefit of an early foal in 2013.

Ask The Vet

Picture provided by AVS Equine Hospital

With a thorough examination done, you are now prepared to have your mare in peak breeding condition next spring. When all the data from the tests come back in a complete game plan should be worked out with your equine reproductive veterinarian. Also make sure advantage is taken of the fact that she is not pregnant this year and have her under sixteen hours of light starting about Thanksgiving each year. Make sure she is in good body condition and it is best if she is gaining a little weight when breeding season approaches. Having her in the situation she will be in when she is bred about a month ahead of time also decreases the pregnancy losses due to stress of moving and being with new horses. We keep all the mares at our facility in individual paddocks to lower the stress level as much as possible. If that is not possible then at least have her in the group of mares she will be living with a few weeks ahead of breeding season. A mare found to have lost her pregnancy is being cultured by Joe Fisch, DVM to determine if she has a uterine infection that caused the loss of the pregnancy.

I am always on the lookout for beautiful handmade jewelry. All of these pieces that I am showcasing are from GiddyUpgirls Design. Big pendant necklaces are perfect paired with v-neck or lower cut sweaters. This black & blue pendant (top right) is amazing. I never really liked the combination of black & blue before but I’m definitely making the switch. This cross pendant (top left) with neutral tones of brown & amber is anything but boring. It minds me of fall Indian corn colors. The red & black pendant (bottom right), all of these pieces are handmade & you may request any custom order that you can think of. If you can dream it up, Mandi, Sharon & Lainee can create it. I had such a hard time picking out my favorites, because there are so many great pieces to choose from. This may be one of favorite necklaces thought, the multi colored owl necklace (bottom left). While dark is always nice, a little yellow & some green paired with red & blue provides such a great contrast. To see more of what GiddyUpgirls Designs has to offer & place an order, find them on Facebook at

all is not necessarily one of my favorite seasons because of the incoming cooler weather, however it is my favorite season for clothing. You have so many options for outfits; I love layering & lots of accessories. I followed a keep it simple & minimal rule for summer but now it’s time to break that. Nice jewelry is always a great way to add to any outfit & for fall, don’t forget to ditch your lighter shades & opt for some darker, earthier tones.

I’m Cowboy Boot Obsessed. The nights are getting longer & that fall chill is in the air. It’s time to pack away those floral boots & all of your pastels & vivid pinks. September brings in the darker & richer colors; I picked these ladies Lucchese Cowgirl Blue Hand Tooled Filigree Wingtip boots from PFI Western Store for my September boot pick of the month.

Black & blue never looked so good on you, I find that a royal blue shade rarely makes an appearance on cowboy boots. I think it’s a knockout combination. Royal blue is so rich looking & its distressed looks really pops against the black. The hand tooling is intricate & detailed; you aren’t going to find boots that look like these anywhere else. This is a gorgeous fall color combination, you could definitely pair it with my black & blue necklace pick from GiddyUpgirls Design. These boots would look great either tucked or un-tucked. I would definitely wear black jeans with these. You can find these at PFI Western Store

FashionCaught in Action Brought to you by..... TheSnootyHorse.com

Fashion is a cultural phenomenon that helps define who we are. Have you ever walked around the coliseum at a big barrel race and looked up and saw a fabulous outfit matched with just the right accessories walking your way? In my experience it’s usually a girl who is equally as stunning as her outfit and might I add she would probably make cut off sweats look adorable because her fashion sense would tell her exactly which slouchy tee pulls off her shorts.

RyannPedone

Hey Girl! Okay, before I dig into the fashion questions tell me what is your favorite Rodeo, Futurities or Open Barrel Races? I really like the futurities the best; I am currently riding about 12-13 horses.

Futurity Trainer usually appears with a smile in jeans and a tee that you wish you could throw on and appear as chic as she does. However, I am pretty sure her dog, Izzy, is an uptown stiletto wearing dog at heart. Hey, opposites attract, right?

Wow, that’s a lot of riding every day! What is your biggest accomplishment in barrel racing thus far?

I am not convinced that I have accomplished a lot, but I guess making it back at OKC with the 2nd fastest time in the futurity was a turning point. I chocked in the finals, but we will not go there. ;) Lmao

I don’t know you that well but you seem pretty laid back! Do you sport stilettos when you are out on the town or are you a 24/7 boots and jeans type of girl? I rarely go out on the town, but when I do I like to dress up and wear heels, although I must confess with a few drinks and dancing I usually lose the heels.

I absolutely loved your side braid with your cowboy hat at Fort Smith! What is your fav. way to wear your hair this summer? You will often catch me with a braid or low Princess Leia rolls with a cap.

If you had to, which one of the following could you live without? • A hairbrush just gimme a hair tie and I’m set all weekend. • Several pairs of boots, who needs options anyway? • Tee Shirts gimme a fancy button down or a sexy tank, tee shirts are for home! • Jewelry, all that jingle and jangle gets in the way of my focus!

If your reaction is anything like mine as soon as she passes you glance own at your own outfit and vow to revamp your closet and dress cuter from here on out. Oh and maybe hit the gym. Ha As in any industry the professionals are (as they should be) admired. So just what is she wearing? This month’s Fashion Spotlight takes a peek at two professional barrel racers styles and comments about fashion.

the cowboy hats I wore in high school because they wear terrible.

Last but not least what are you wearing today? As in right now as you complete this interview? I have Princess Leia rolls with a camo Outlaw Equine military cap, a white Outlaw Equine t-shirt, Seven for All Man Kind bermuda jean shorts and sperry shoes on. :)

Clockwise from top: Izzy! Dare she be seen in public without a bow! ; Ryann in a t-shirt, shorts and cute visor. ; Ryann dressed up for a rare night (probably due to the 12 horses in her barn) on the town! ; Ryann at the Barrel Futurities of America Championships. (Picture by Springer Photography) P.S. Love her layered look.

It is a close call between the jewelry and the hairbrush.

When it comes to fashion each new season the gossip is always what the new “black” will be. Fill in this line _______________ is my new black this barrel racing season. I guess Pink?? I truly love white, although it is a bad color for me due to the fact that I am an avid coffee drinker.

Are you big on the bling for you or your horse?

I am definitely NOT a bling person, for me or my horse.

What is your favorite brand of cowboy hat? Color?

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Howdy everyone! This month in our member spotlight we’d like to introduce you to one of our younger members, Clayton Griffith. Clayton is currently a men’s level one shooter and goes by the Alias, Shotgun Clay. He is the oldest grandson of Bryan and Kathy McDonald of Connersville IN and Karina McDonald of Rushville IN. He is 14 years old and is in 8th grade at Benjamin Rush Jr. High School in Rushville IN.

Nationals in 2003 at Tunica Mississippi. Clayton also place 4th in the Wrangler Division at Tunica the following year.

Clayton attended his fist competition at the age of 6 as a Wrangler in Miamitown OH at a 1st Ohio shoot with Grandpa Bryan. His first time out he took cap gun in hand and he headed down the course in a rain storm so hard you could hardly see him at the end of the arena. After finishing the course he rode out of the arena, rain soaked and smiling and asked me if he had shot clean. Of course my answer was yes (he was using cap guns) and like the rest of us, he has been hooked on CMSA ever since. Clayton has had the privilege and honor to shoot in several different states in the Midwest. He had met a lot of really good people that have coached and influenced him in more positive ways than anyone could imagine. This gives me (his Grandpa) a tremendous amount of respect for the cowboys, cowgirls and the CMSA Wrangler program in general, especially with the three local clubs that Clayton has grown up with, Indiana Rough Riders, 1st Ohio and Indiana Mounted Regulators. Some of Clayton’s accomplishments in his earlier wrangler career include winning 2nd place in the limited Wrangler Division at the

Page 33

Clayton’s other interests include baseball, football, and wrestling with his two younger brothers, Trenton and Dalton. His most favorite past time is riding horses with his Grandparents, whether it’s riding at home, checking fence, moving cattle or trail riding. Good Luck in all you do Clayton! Well that’s all for now. God Bless and keep those Cylinders a spinnin’! Bryan McDonald IRR President

Summer’s Winding Down..... Hi Everybody: Well, by the time you get this school will be started and it’s college for me. Northern Kentucky University here I come!

Summer is winding down. The NBHA Youth World has came and gone. I was just out of making the finals, but oh well, there’s always next year.

Smile, Critter! (Love the shirt!!)

On a more positive note, Indiana got 2nd in the “Spirit Parade.” It was great, we have not even made the top three before this year. We were honoring the Indy 500 and each district made a car, some looked better than others. Actually, mine was one of the ones that others looked better than, haha. We had a pizza party at Youth World and got to socialize with each other. Congrats to the Indiana youth that did make it to the finals and to the ones who tried, “Better luck next year.”

ALL AMERICAN YOUTH WINNER 2011

Sarah McDonald & “Bling” What is your full name? Sarah Rose McDonald Age? 19, Born June 5, 1992 Where do you live? Brunswick, Georgia What are your parent’s names? Mike and Carol McDonald Do your parents ride? They used to, but now they just ride at home. Do you have siblings, if so what are their names and do they ride? and ages? I have a half sister, Brook Williams, who rode pleasure when she was younger, and a half brother who does not ride. They are both married, and my sister has two children. Anna Williams, her daughter enjoys horses, and I hope that she will be my youth rider in a couple of years. haha

Page 36

Where do you go to college and what are you studying? College of Coastal Georgia in Brunswick, Georgia. I want to become a Nurse Anesthetist You just won the All American Youth in June, how many constestants did you compete against? There were over 600 contestants What horse did you win on? Tell me about this horse, name, age, breed, did you train it? any funny habits? Fame Fling N Bling. Her barn name is Bling, she just turned 5. She’s out of a Dash Ta Fame mare named Short Penny and Streak of Fling. My Uncle Stephen and our close family friend Larry D Ammons who is like my uncle purchased her at the Fulton Ranch Sale in Valentine, Nebraska when she was a yearling. My uncle trained her and I finished her with hauling her. The horse you won All American on Bling do you own him? My Uncle Stephen and Larry D. Ammons do. What did you win for winning the All American Youth? I won $8000 in the finals and $8700 for the weekend, a saddle, and a belt buckle. Describe your run? and thoughts?

In my finals run, my uncle told me took take a new approach to the first barrel. We planned to go farther up in the alleyway before I turned around and got her lined up to take off, that way she could see the barrel and maybe then we could get a good first barrel. The plan worked, and she really ran and worked. The first barrel is the key barrel for her. If she hooks it, then the rest of the pattern I have to drive her and stay out of her way around the second and third. Also, I did not know by breast collar broke in the alleyway when I took off, so it was dangling the whole run. What other championships have you won? On Bling, a week after I won the Southern States Triple Crown on Saturday as well as the average, Dixie Nationals open in 2010, Dixie Nationals Youth in 2011, Fortune 5 average in Ocala, Reserve at Youth World 2010, and multiple go rounds. In 2005 I won the Open World Championship on GC Highly Motivated, Jerry.

TEEN CORRAL w/Clint Van How many years have you been running barrels? Since I was 4. Truck - We have a Dodge Name the peron(s) most Trailer - Southern Star responsible for you being Saddle - Mike and Talmadge Green Food - Grilled Chicken and Sweet Tea a successful barrel racer? My family is really supportive Music - Country and Rap and always helps me stay Color - Purple confident if I get down. My mom used to ride with me every day when I was little. My Dad is always cheering and wants me to succeed, and since I have been hauling Bling alot, I could not go anywhere without Larry or my Uncle Stephen. My Uncle Stephen let me have Jerry when my horse died from West Nile when I was younger. Larry and him were also the ones that let me ride Bling. I have been blessed with many good mounts. My Uncle is who I go to if I need any advice. He can always find little things that I need to do to improve my time. He also makes sure that I focus on keeping my riding style good, and has helped me correct bad habits of leaning and where to keep my hands on the reins. There has been many pep talks he has gave me before key runs that have made a very big positive impact. He is also a very good trainer that I can ride behind. Who is your most admired barrel racer? I admire all barrel racers because every race is a new race, and anyone can be on top. What else do you hope to accomplish this year? Right now I am at Youth World, and then I hope to compete at Open World. I want to keep having smooth, clean runs.

Some Favorites

2011 NBHA

Any good luck charm? I always pray right before I run and my favorite verse is, “The horse is made ready for the day of battle, but victory rests in the Lord.” Proverbs 21:31 Do you work outside of the horses? Yes, I work at Mallery Street Cafe as a waitress, and babysit. What are some of your other hobbies? I like to be outside swimming, going to the beach, riding bikes, and being with my friends. I enjoy being active and sports. What is some advice you could give to your fellow barrel racers? Do not get too hard on yourself if you pick up a bad habit, but keep working at it and be open for good advice from wise people. It is importaant to keep your horse happy, and in good shape. Make a goal, and go hard to reach it. What do you look for in a barrel horse? A horse that is a natural athletic mover. It is good for them to have a natural headset and if there hocks are under them, also long underneath. The most important thing that makes a horse a winner is there heart and grit. Is this your last year to compete in youth? No, I have next year UNTIL NEXT MONTH, KEEP THEM STANDING,

Team Indiana Gallup or Bust!!! T

eam Indiana traveled to Gallup, NM at the end of June to compete in the Cinch Division National Finals Rodeo. These 6th, 7th and 8th graders were the best of the best to come out of Indiana and had to qualify in their events to make the trip to Gallup. Teams from all over the country as well as Australia and Canada gathered for one week, each individual striving for a personal best to put their team at the top and to claim their own spot in the short go. This year Strand Barricklow, Lane McPheeters and Michael Shreeve claimed their spots in the short-go to try and claim their event titles. The Cinch Division National Finals are an excellent opportunity for contestants to gain experience, be seen by college scouts and win scholarship money toward the college of their choice. Add to that the memories and friends that are made during the week, any contestant who competes at the finals is a winner.

O

ne highlight of the week was the big win by Team Indiana in the Tug of War Contest. The Hoosiers dominated the Tug of War and claimed the victory and a great team memory. Here are some other highlights of the trip, told by each contestant to compete this year.

spent a lot of time in Kansas and Kentucky’s campsites. I will remember most the feeling I had when they announced my name to come back to the short go. I am completely excited to have another year to compete and win the deal. What it meant to me was that I still have another year to come back and be on top. With a lot of practice and work I can do whatever I put my mind and heart to!

Michael Shreeve, Salamonia, IN

I competed in Breakaway Roping, Team Roping, and Bull Riding. I finished 13th in the nation in Bull Riding. Whoop Whoop INDIANA!!!! I learned that keeping fundamentals is what it is all about out there. The kids who compete out there are the best of the best, and making stupid mistakes like I did in the first go will really cost ya. My favorite part was making the short go and meeting all the pretty girls at the dances, especially the hot ones from Hawaii!!!! I still keep in contact with them. I heard stories of shark bites and how they hop from island to island to rodeo and put their horses on boats. I think that is nuts!!! I learned a lot about their cultures and foods and language. I also

My time in Gallup, New Mexico was an experience of a lifetime. It is a memory I will always remember, but one part that will always stand out in this experience was hanging out

after the late performances with all the people and contestants from all different states. In my time in Gallup I have learned that, “You are not there for a long time but you’re there for a good time”, Quoted by Cord Barricklow. I qualified in two events Breakaway Roping and Team Roping. I didn’t do as well as I would have liked, but like I said it was a great experience. I guess the whole nerve thing got to me because I went out the first round in breakaway and got a good start but I just didn’t quite follow through with my loop and got a no time. Same goes for the second round in breakaway, I went out and got a good start and just went for it, and I guess you could say it just wasn’t meant to be. Well I didn’t do so hot in Breakaway Roping and things just didn’t turn up in Team Roping either. My heading partner ,Kyle Mackey, and I went out in first round and nerves must have got to Kyle because we went out and Kyle just didn’t quite follow through so his loop bounced right off that steer’s old hard head. Same as Breakaway, we went out and got out ran and after that it all went downhill from there and we got a no time. One thing I would like to do is thank my parents for providing this opportunity of a lifetime to me I could of never done it without them. Other than the part of me not doing well in my events, I still had a great experience at the Junior High National Finals Rodeo.

Jordan Banta, Waynetown, IN

My Gallup trip was amazing. I had a bunch of fun and I also made new friends. My goal I want to set for next year is to make it to the short go in the Chute Dogging. But this year I was happy I caught in the Ribbon Roping and the Calf Roping even though I got a NT in the Calf Roping. I would like to thank my family and friends for supporting and cheering me on!! My favorite memory was seeing people progress from last year!!!!

three times before I was I in it, because my dad was the National Director for the six years. This year’s trip was a very fun trip, we made it out there and back with no problems luckily, and our horses were fine too. This year was very memorable, because I got 4th in the nation in the Chute Dogging. That memory will last a life time. At the Red Rock State Park there are trails to hike on in the mountains, so we decided to hike to Church Rock. The funniest thing that I can remember being there was when I saw Tim Eddlemen flip because he saw a snake. I didn’t believe him that he saw a snake, so I went over and saw a bull snake curled up under a dumpster. All and all, going to Gallup was a very fun and great experience, and I hope to go back some day.

Sydney Hurley, Columbia City, IN Nothing

could ever replace the thrill and excitement of this year’s trip to Gallup! I made so many new friends, pushed myself harder in each event and came home with pride. I will never forget all of the amazing memories and will work even harder to qualify next year!

Jessie Hoagland, Huntingburg, IN

Lois Thomas, LaCross, IN Gallup was truly an experience of a lifetime. Every day was as fun and exciting as the last. I hope to go back next year and do better than I did this year. I met so many new people. I feel truly blessed to have been able to go. Thanks Mom and Dad!

Gallup proved to be a building block through more high pressure runs that I know will be helpful in high school rodeo. Even though I didn’t do as well as I had hoped, my horses performed well. With High School quickly approaching, I hope to use the knowledge and experience gained at Gallup to aid me in the level of competition in High School rodeo.

Zach Hunter, Attica, IN

The last two years out to Gallup, I have had more fun meeting new people and getting to know them. I have made a lot of good friends from different parts of the country. This year I was excited when I scored on both my chute doggin’ steers, and when Casey and I caught our steer in Team Roping. All I can say to others is to go out, have fun and meet others.

The whole experience was a lot of fun and very interesting. The days I didn’t rodeo, I had fun roping the dummy and making friends. The rodeo itself was a good experience, even though I didn’t do my best. This next season I will practice hard so I can make it next year. Overall, I had a lot of fun and learned a lot of new things.

Renae Johnson, Rochester, IN

Going to Gallup, New Mexico was very exciting, fun and scary all at the same time. I was very

IJRA News nervous about riding in front of such a big crowd, but after my first run, I realized there was nothing different about it, I still had the same job to do. I will never forget how excited my dad was when I talked to him on the phone that night after my first run, he was so excited for me and that he was able to watch me even though I was so far from home. I am thankful to have such a wonderful support team that stood beside me there in Gallup and all of those watching back at home. I want to thank Jordan Banta for letting me use his horse at the last minute to compete in Goat Tying. Competing at that level was definitely a rewarding experience, I had set a goal to be there and I did it! Achieving my goal has taught me that hard work does pay off and it is not the speed, it’s the stride that you should be proud of. ~

the arena for Barrel Racing. Dolly and I have never performed in such a large arena with so many people watching. It was breathtaking. The whole experience has made me want to achieve more. I have set new goals for next year. I may even start roping, which I have never tried before. I am looking forward to next year’s National Finals.

Gavin McGary, Bedford, IN

The trip to Gallup was a long boring ride, except for the fact that I played video games with my friends. You can never forget that you wouldn’t make it out without my family and caring relatives. In Gallup, Ii competed in the Goat Tying, Team Roping, Calf Roping, Ribbon Roping, and Chute Dogging. I placed 6th in the second go in Ribbon Roping and placed 15th in the average for the Calf Roping Altogether not too bad.

My trip to the New Mexico for the Nationall Rodeo was absolutely amazing! No, I may not have made the short-go, but I had fun the entire time I was there. Meeting people from all over and making new friends was probably one of the best parts of the trip, besides the drive down and seeing each and every state along the way. Everyone there was extremely nice and to see the way the Indiana Junior Rodeo Association (IJRA) Cinch Group came together as a TEAM while in New Mexico, made me proud to be a part of such an elite group of young ladies and gentlemen. Congratulations to all my teammates who make it to the short-go. Of course, last but not least, thank you to all of the parents who help in the IJRA and for showing me so much over the years. Rodeo has made me a better person because of people like you.

My favorite part about my New Mexico trip was the excitement when my name was called to enter the arena. A memory that I will never forget, happened on the way down to Gallup. We had three breakdowns! We got to Gallup in the early morning of the last day of check-in. Something I learned for next year is to pack in more practice before we go on our trip!

Mary Lloyd, Mill Creek, IN

New Mexico was sooo fun. I wish I never had to leave. I met people from all over the United States. My most memorable moment was entering

This was my first year out in Gallup and it was amazing. The view was so cool. When I went on the hiking trails I could see everything, but we still got lost. I was with my friend Jessie Hoagland and we had to crawl down this steep rock to get back to camp. The hike was only supposed to be an hour long but ended up lasting 3 hours instead! It was also cool that Indiana ended up being the tug of war champions. I hope I make it back next year because it was a lot of fun.

Going to Cinch Jr. High National Finals at Gallup, NM was one of the coolest things I’ve ever got to do. While I was there I competed in the Goat Tying event and was on the National Champion “Tug Of War” Indiana Team. I also had a lot of fun with my friends, especially the hike we took up to “Church Rock”. The view from there was awesome, like a scene from a western movie. I hope all the younger IJRA kids get a chance to go to National Finals. It will be a trip they will never forget. I know I won’t.

This was my first trip to Gallup, NM. I competed in Team Roping and Breakaway Roping. I had a lot of fun on the trip and met a lot of new people. My goal is to go again next year in all of my events.

Congratulations Sydney Hurley!

Casey Coll Pittsboro, IN

Sydney Hurley from Columbia City, IN had a busy week in Gallup, NM competing in four events as well as running for the position of National Junior High Rodeo Association Secretary. Sydney was one of four campaigning for the opportunity to fill the position and can proudly say she was voted in as Secretary for the 2010-2011 season! Way to go Sydney! We know you will do a great job!

Casey competed in the Team Roping as a header for Zach Hunter. He will have another chance this year to head to Gallup, NM to compete for a national championship as well as be part of Team Indiana as they try and hold on to the National Tug of War Champion title!

Congratulations Team Cinch on a job well done this season! We look forward to all the 2010-2011 rodeo season has to offer. If you know of someone who is interested in becoming part of the Cinch Division or would like to become a member of IJRA, the 2010-2011 season will kick off on September 10th and 11th in Bartonia, IN. Our Bartonia rodeo will be an IJRA as well as a Cinch Division rodeo. Contact Rachel Thomas at 260-413-6660 if you are interested in becoming a part of one or both of these great associations!

CHRISTIAN COWBOY COLLECTION w/ Christa Conway How Committed Are You? through my ride(s) or not even get to ride at all on a day or two.... boy can I tell! My horse is dull, I am dull...almost uncomfortable in the saddle....and I have lost my “edge.” That’s when I get down on myself. You see, I realize that in order to be a Champion on horseback, I have to be willing to put in the time and the work. Dedication brings results. God shows us that if we are willing to put in the time and effort (seed), he will provide us with a reward (harvest.) More than wanting to be a Champion on horseback, I want to be a Champion for my Heavenly Father. I want to be the best that I can be for Him. Does this come easy? Nope. You guessed it....it takes time and effort. To be the best I can be as a Christian, I need to spend time with God.... time in prayer, time in the bible, time with other Christians. When I put in the time and the effort....boy, does it show! And when I don’t..... That’s when I get down on myself. That’s when I get down altogether! If you think of life as a race....then we need to get in “shape” so we can run it to the best of our ability. The bible mentions this:

I

read a quotation on a t-shirt the other day. It said: “Being a Champion means: “Being willing to do all the time, what most people are only willing to do some of the time.” Most of us in the horse world can relate to that. If you are serious about competing on horseback, no matter what the discipline, then you know you are going to have to work at it everyday. We put lots of time into keeping our horses in shape; exercise, training and serious saddle time here through the week is a must if we are even thinking about going to a competition. I was always taught “If you don’t ride through the week, you are definitely not going to a show on the weekend.” And now that I am older, I know why. I like to win. (Don’t we all??) I want to have my horses performing to their full potential when I pay an entry fee into a barrel race. I’d like to think I have a shot at winning that entry fee back, and more. I have also realized over the years that when I get to spend some serious time in the saddle in the practice arena...it shows in my performance as a rider and it shows in the performance of my horse. If I have a busy week in the office and have to rush to the barn, hurry

Last & most important thought… Salvation is a gift and a choice...... Jesus died on the cross as the final sacrifice. When He was resurrected on the 3rd day, he defeated Satan for us. All we have to do is believe that He beat death and acknowledge it with our words. If we believe that and accept Him as our personal savior…we are promised eternal life with Him in Heaven. You can’t earn your way into Heaven; you have to believe your way there. So many people think they “aren’t good enough” to get to Heaven… But… Salvation is a GIFT from God and you don’t earn a gift. Gifts are something someone gives to you and for the gift to be yours, you have to accept it. All we have to do is accept that wonderful gift. I know I have…won’t you?

Page 44

1 Corinthians 9:24 Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain. Hebrews 12:1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, God also refers to sowing and reaping in many places in the bible. We should remember the process of planting a “real” seed and the time and effort that goes into that seed until a crop is ready to harvest.... 2 Corinthians 9:6 But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. Galatians 6:7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

Until next month.... Put in the Time and Effort....and become a Champion!! Happy Trails & God Bless! Christa But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. Romans 5:15 For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Romans 10: 9-10

On the Trail

By Brother Brad Curtis of Mountain Top Cowboy Church

THE SOUNDS OF THUNDER When Bob came through the gate All of heaven took note He said Pete I’m a rounder Where’s me a young colt

That’s when the Lord spoke up Said Bob is my dear friend He’s a real twister And he can rope the wind

When that colt began to buck All of heaven watched in wonder As Bob spurred that colt There was clap of thunder

I don’t want me no dead head That some kid could ride Give me a rank one Then Pete, step a`side

Yep he was a sinner Running fast and wild Then one great day He became my child

So when you hear the thunder And see a lightning bolt That just ol` Bob Snappin` out another colt

Yep I’ll break’em all The Lord will have a string Them white ponies there Will be fit for the King

So Bob belongs here On my Fathers place Not because he was perfect But because of my grace

That’s when one of the saints Said, they’re gon`a let him in Don’t they know His life was full of sin

If you will remember You were lost in sin But I died for everyone And I let all of you in

Why he use to drink Now I don’t mean to fuss But that cowboy there He was bad to cuss

Heaven grew silent As Bob gathered up his tack Roped a young colt Then climbed up on his back

Matthew 9:10-11 And it came to pass, as Jesus sat at meat in the house, behold, many publicans and sinners came and sat down with him and his disciples. And when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto his disciples, Why eateth your Master with publicans and sinners? By: Bro. Brad Curtis 7/26/11

Mystery of the Month July’s Mystery..... ......We Need A Winner!

This month’s picture traveled all the way from Texas to reach us. (Although that is not where this picture was taken!) This photo was taken in 1992 somewhere in Ohio. The cowboys are still very active today in the barrel racing industry....that’s all the info we are giving out this month! Correctly identify our mystery cowboys, cowgirl, location and even the dog and horse.....give us as much information as possible to win your choice of a one year subscription to The Horse Resource, a “Horsey Hat” or a “Horsey-T.” Please send us your photos from the past.... we’d like to use them in our Mystery of the Month. Horses, people, events, etc... Send via email to: thehorseresource@msn.com or mail to The Horse Resource 12601 S CR 200 W Muncie, IN 47302 We will return your original photos to you.

June & July Mysteries Were Tough..... But We Finally Have Winners!! Our June Mystery Cowboy was Dick Fritcha and his horse’s name was Raffles. We had several people send us the correct answer after August’s issue printed, but our official winner was Debbie Williams of Indiana. Debbie chose a FREE subscription the The “Fast” Horse Resource as her prize. DeeDee Koger also knew our June Mystery Cowboy and his horse...she was just a little late at the trigger. Ironically, DeeDee has a connection to the cowboy and cowgirls in our July issue, although she didn’t take a guess at their identities. DeeDee’s dad, Ray Overlander was our July mystery cowboy. Ray is shown holding DeeDee’s sister Julia and beside them on the sorrel horse is DeeDee’s sister, Diane. Congratulations to our winner of the July mystery, Jerry Hummer. Jerry jnew the Overlander family and chose to extend his subscription for a year. Congratulations to our winners!

Do You Still Like Playing? Help Us Out..... We are running low on photos.....Please send us your older photos of horsemen and women (and kids) that are still active in the horse business today. Or if you have pictures of a well known horse or event....that will mix things up a bit. We’re up for some new mysterys if you are!! Keep sending us those photos!! Send via email to thehorseresource@msn.com or mail to 12601 S CR 200 W Muncie, IN 47302 Page 55
