LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
S
ometimes it’s easy for us to lose sight of why we do what we do. It’s easy to forget the reason we spend so much of our time (and our money) to be involved in this all consuming “horse business.” It’s easy to get so wrapped up in the stall cleaning and show scheduling, the farrier and vet appointments....the entering events, ordering supplements and wormers, fly sprays and equipment. It’s easy to become so involved in the motions that we miss the moments.
That’s why we spend so much time and money doing all of those other things....for the moments. We do it to witness the newborn foal’s first steps and first meal, to feel that warm breath on our neck from our favorite horse in the middle of winter (when our hands are almost numb)....we do it for the exhilarating thrill of 15 seconds with our partner in the barrel arena (realizing that the time in the practice pen made a difference)....we do it for the photographer’s flash in the winner’s circle.....for the quiet munching sounds in the barn after all the horses are tucked in safe and fed....for the look on our kids’ faces when they finally “get it” after we’ve explained it to them one more time.....for the feelings, the smells, the sounds, the sights, the memories. For the moments.
Appreciate the moments..........and remember to count your blessings on horseback! God Bless and Ride Safe, Christa Conway
A Little “Barrel Talk” We have included a small section of “A Little Barrel Talk” for you this month. Remember to visit www.barrelhorseworld.com to read more Barrel Talk.
How do you keep your horses feeling their best?
Runninbay Posted 2013-08-21 2:45 PM (#6807914) Georgia Peach Posts: 7472 Location: Georgia My recent bout with some non-barrel racing related injuries has caused me to really think about how I care for my horse’s after a run or hard workout. I’ve come to the conclusion that, in the past, I have not been so good about proper cool downs and taking the time to insure that my horse’s will feel great the next day. However, im turning over a new leaf and will be taking better care to keep them at the top of their game. So tell me some things that you guys do to make this happen? Im not referring to supplements, feed, injections, etc. My current program consists of cold hosing after each workout and applying absorbine linement to the major muscles and legs. What do you guys do?
Mine all haul in Soft Ride boots, and I let them roll as often as possible after a run. This summer, I have been hauling back to Matt’s place after most rodeos and they have a pen there with a “rolling spot” so they are turned out in a small pen each night and can roll if they want. I usually wake up to dirty horses so I think they roll a lot.
dallaswinn I would be interested in know that too!!! Thanks for sharing!
Lil_Pony35 Personally I think keeping them in proper running shape is the best thing you could do for them. I make my horses work hard. I stress them physically every day (appropriately). I make sure they have enough to eat and I make sure they have clean living arrangements. Bonding, and loving on them is just as important to me. I am looking into some ice-vibes for my guys hocks and I love SNM.
blccwgl55 Me three! rodeowithjoker I walk them back to the trailer, loosen the cinch, take polos off and rub legs down with Sore No More liniment, then walk until they’re breathing normally or close to it. (My rodeo horse is a BUTT to walk so I keep him moving as long as I can handle him and then tie him up for a while until he comes off his adrenaline high. Then I can walk him more but when he is snorting, bucking and bouncing me off trucks, fences, etc., I can’t handle it.)
Page 4
I keep them turned out at home - none of mine are stalled unless its required at a show - and they get to be horses for at least a couple days a week. Currently the schedule is run on the weekends and take Monday & Tuesday completely off, then do light workouts Wednesday and Thursday, and compete Friday/Saturday/Sunday depending on the exact schedule. They’re in shape so I don’t have to do a lot to keep them ready to roll, and I like to have them somewhat fresh for the weekends.
Nateracer I do regular massage and chiro work. They are on a joint supplement. They get their PHT blankets and hoods before and after we run and in the trailer. After running I remove their leg boots and walk until they are not breathing heavily.
hckbarrelracer Pht blanket and hock wraps in trailer to and from rodeos, platinum cj supplements, forco supplement, ice vibe boots before running (the warm up, no ice), then after run, walking, ice vibe boots with ice, sore no more, and pht blanket and hock wraps back on. Maintenance excerise during the week. Usually two good days off with light riding in between rodeos.
BlazeFlameHarley If you can after a run pull off polos and saddle, walk them until they stop drinking or breathing heavy, then if possible give them a bath or hose down and walk or graze until dry, whichever you prefer, then try to wait an hour or so before rubbing their legs down. You will be able to feel a lot more if something is wrong if you wait then you will if you do their legs while they’re hot.
hammer_time Keeping them legged up, stretching, letting them roll when you can, turning them out while at home, and cold hosing or applying liniment is what I stick to.
This is how I learned to do it at the track and I have carried it over to my own horses.
Runnin < C > If its cool enough I use my Back On Track sheet... if its hot I use my PHT sheet. After a run I’ll treat with Respond System blanket (30 min) and laser if Im making more than 1 run that weekend. do the knees and hocks really well. I poultice from the middle of forearm to hoof and middle of gaskin to hoof and also do stifles, depending if I have been having any issues - if so, can also wrap them with standing banages to keep the poultice wetter, longer. And put on Soft Ride Boots. I tie my horse long enough he can lay down at night if its a place I cant set up a portable pen and give him a fresh bucket of water and full feed hay at all times. Walk him as much as I can ... on the big 3 day weekends when we are camped out and plenty of down time I will use the Ice Horse Machine on his legs - 20 min on fronts an 20 min on backs. Excited to be able to incorporate the Pony Plate into my schedule now, once I finally get to start hauling again :)
WrapSnap As far as liniments, poultices and such, I have an array of products that I use. That really all depends on each horse’s particular needs. One thing that they all get after a run is untacked in short order, a quick 5 to 10 minute walk and hosed off. This is followed by another 10 to 15 minutes of walking and if possible, some time spent hand grazing. While off at big, multi day shows, they all get taken out for walks and hand grazing as much as possible. They all haul in their Soft Rides and wear them whenever they are not being ridden at shows. mollibtexan Keeping them in shape, always scrape them off after a hose down alcohol and wraps. trickster j Horses love microcurrent! I have a variety of microcurrent units I use on them, sometimes they get the electrode pad treatments, and sometimes I go over their body with rollers and probes- they all love it! www.barrelhorseworld.com

News Cloning Lawsuit Update AQHA Provides The Latest Updates On The Cloning Lawsuit.
The American Quarter Horse Association - August 12, 2013 On August 12, the parties appeared for a hearing before Judge Mary Lou Robinson for the purpose of arguing on the issues of the plaintiffs’ claims for attorney fees and for equitable relief in the form of an injunction requiring AQHA to register clones and their offspring. The plaintiffs have requested an award of nearly $900,000 in attorney fees and seek an injunction requiring the unconditional registration of clones and their offspring in the AQHA registry. At the conclusion of the hearing, Judge Mary Lou Robinson announced that she was going to enter an injunction requiring AQHA to register clones and their offspring. She instructed the parties to confer and determine if any agreements concerning what rules would be necessary for this relief were needed, and instructed the parties to file any briefs on the subject no later than Wednesday August 14. As for attorney fees, the Judge did not render any ruling. She further instructed the plaintiffs to produce all attorney fee billing statements by the end of the day and ordered that AQHA enter any briefs on the subject of plaintiffs’ requested award of attorney fees by August 14, 2013. Finally, the Judge ordered the plaintiffs to submit proposed findings of fact and conclusions of law by the August 14 deadline as well. “As announced on August 1, and referenced in its August 9 Brief on Equitable Relief and Attorney Fees, AQHA will continue to take any and all necessary legal action in seeking to have the verdict of the jury and any judgment entered by the Court in favor of plaintiffs reversed,” said AQHA Executive Vice President Don Treadway. “AQHA will continue to fight for its members’ rights.” It is expected that following the entry of a judgment in favor of plaintiffs AQHA will proceed with filing a Motion for Judgment as a Matter of Law in which AQHA will request the Court enter a take nothing judgment in favor of AQHA based upon the fact that the jury’s verdict was not supported by the evidence entered at trial. Such a motion is due no later than 28 days following the entry of a signed final judgment by the Court. Should the court not grant AQHA’s Motion for Judgment as a Matter of Law, then AQHA will file a notice of appeal thus beginning the appellate process. AQHA will continue to update its membership and directors with developments in the case. As a matter of background, on July 28, a 10-person jury in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas, Amarillo Division, ruled in favor of the plaintiffs, Abraham & Veneklasen Joint Venture et al. in their antitrust suit against AQHA. The plaintiffs alleged that AQHA Rule REG106.1, which prohibits the registration of cloned horses and their offspring in AQHA’s breed registry, violates federal and state antitrust laws. Although the jury found that AQHA violated antitrust laws, it awarded no damages to the plaintiffs despite the plaintiffs demand for $5.7 million dollars in damages at trial. At today’s hearing, which lasted a little more than two hours, the counsel for AQHA urged the court to deny the plaintiffs’ requests and to enter judgment as a matter of law in favor of AQHA due to plaintiffs’: • • •
failure to establish the existence of a conspiracy to prohibit registration of clones and their offspring; failure to establish the existence of a properly defined antitrust market consisting of “elite” Quarter Horses; failure to establish that Rule REG106.1 has caused any harm to
the alleged market through a constraint on the supply of “elite” Quarter Horses; • failure to establish that Rule REG106.1 constitutes an unreasonable restrain on trade, such that the anticompetitive effects of the rule outweigh the legitimate justifications for the rule; • failure to establish that AQHA possesses monopoly power in the alleged market; and • failure to establish that Rule REG106.1 constitutes exclusionary conduct that is inconsistent with competition on the merits and that has the potential for making a significant contribution to AQHA’s monopoly power. Counsel for AQHA further argued that to the extent the plaintiffs were entitled to any injunctive relief, which AQHA denied, then such relief should be limited to only the registration of cloned mares. More specifically, AQHA argued that any equitable relief be limited so as to only allow for the registration of cloned mares that are free of genetic diseases and that such clones be listed in a Clone Supplement for breeding purposes only. AQHA counsel further argued that, for parentage verification purposes, the mitochondrial DNA profile of the clone must be different than the mitochondrial DNA profile of the original mare and all other previously registered clones of the same mare. Finally, AQHA counsel argued that the registration of the offspring of clones and their descendants be listed in either a Clone Numbered Registry or Clone Appendix registry as determined by AQHA and its members and Stud Book Committee. AQHA’s counsel also argued to the Court that AQHA should retain the authority to craft whatever rules necessary for dealing with the registration of clones as opposed to the plaintiffs’ request for an extensive set of new rules dealing with the clone registration issue. With respect to attorneys’ fees, AQHA’s attorney argued that the court should deny plaintiffs’ request for fees because plaintiffs had not produced legally sufficient evidence at trial to establish an antitrust violation. Further, the jury in its verdict awarded no damages to the plaintiffs. Therefore, should the Court decide to award attorneys’ fees then such award should be significantly reduced in keeping with the jury’s award of no damages. For more information about the cloning lawsuit, view the Cloning Lawsuit Resources pages at www.aqha.com.

Green Trades NBHA Roots For IPRA Rodeo By: Tammie Hiatt
www.iprarodeo.com - Madeleine Green of Pelzer, SC entered the world of barrel racing when she was just three years old. Her uncle, Talmadge Green, helped found the NBHA in 1992 and her father, Mike Green, currently serves as the Regional Executive Director of the association.

grounds. Brook says” Coming to Hialeah is very exciting and I am looking forward to the opportunity to work with the staff and the horsemen. I am a very fair person but when rules are broken, penalties will be enforced. I agree with the ARCI model rules and the penalties that are recommended. Hialeah’s house rules follow the ARCI Model Rules of Racing. Hialeah is a horse racing institution and owned by a true gentleman and horsemen in Mr. Brunetti. I am looking forward to the upcoming meet and to making Hialeah a success”.
“I grew up in a strictly barrel racing family. My family was heavily involved in the NBHA and that is where I grew up competing,” said Madeleine. “Last year I went to a couple of rodeos that were close to home and I was hooked. I’m still really new to rodeo , but I love it.” “This year, I decided I only wanted to rodeo. I want to step out on my own and make a name for myself. My goal this year is to make the IFR,” Madeleine states. “I’m currently 9th in the IPRA world standings, so it’s going good.” “I graduated from the University of South Carolina in 2008 with a degree in broadcast journalism. I haven’t used my degree much just yet; there aren’t a lot of jobs that will let me rodeo and do something in that field. I work part-time to help pay my way to the rodeos,” said Green. “I hope to get into commentating or something along that line in the future.” “My family was a little unsure about my rodeo career,” said Madeleine. “The NBHA barrel races have a more controlled environment than rodeos. The barrel racers know the ground will be worked every five runners and at rodeos it’s completely different. My family has warmed up to rodeo now and my Dad supports me 100%.” “My Dad has been such a huge influence in my barrel racing career and without him it wouldn’t be possible. After every run, I send him the video to watch and critique. He always has some advice on what I did wrong and what I could do better, and usually if I listen, his insight helps me fix whatever problems I had in my run,” Madeleine said.

Chalee Gilliland Memorial “Barrels and Bling”
Story by Susan Gilliland Photos by Wendy Swanson Photography
T
he Chalee Gilliland Memorial Barrels and Bling was a huge success! It was the largest show the Monroe County Saddle Club had ever seen in its 50 plus years in Bloomington, Indiana. Five states were represented in the 439 runs that were made that night. The show paid out over $13,000 in winnings. Over $14,000 was raised from the silent auction, bake sale, t-shirt sales, concessions, and entry fees. All proceeds of the show this year go to a fellow Hoosier with Cystic Fibrosis who is awaiting a lung transplant. AND Bloomington, Indiana’s Mayor Mark Kruzan proclaimed July 13, 2013 as “Chalee Gilliland Day” in honor of such a free spirit who touched the lives of everyone she met. Casey Sparks sang the National Anthem. Chalee’s favorite barrel horse, Josie Blue Jet, was once owned by Casey. Chalee immediately loved Casey for owning her beloved black mare! Josie is now retired due to a knee injury, but was brought out of retirement for the Anthem and “grand opening” as Chalee called it.
Picture Left to right: Riana, Chalee's sister, and Rylee Kelly, Chalee's best friend; Riana carrying the flag at the grand entry (or grand opening as Chalee called it); Josie Blue Jet was brought out of retirement for the grand entry in honor of Chalee; A young cowboy enjoying the Kid’s Corral; Peewee rider, Brody Polesel, on Princess Leia being lead by Brittany Schultz
The younger kids enjoyed the Kids Corral area. They had fun doing the toilet paper toss, throwing blocks at the angry birds, and running a stick horse around a set of barrels. The Bling contest gave the judges quite a challenge because so much bling was present!! The Peewee class was very popular with 23 runners!!! And Chalee’s friend from school got to run his very first barrel race in the Chalee’s class for “new, novice, and nervous” riders.
Page 14
A little bit of rain came just at the start of the IBRA youth class, but the accompanying rainbows told us that we were doing the right thing and Chalee approved!!! Jimmy Bryant ran the fastest time of the event on his very last run! Jimmy doesn’t need any help, but I’m guessing he had some angel wings pushing him!!! He set a NEW ARENA RECORD with a 15.221! Jimmy was presented with a hand tooled bronc halter made by David Pictures Left to right: Robert, Chalee’s dad. looking up McKnight, which Jimmy turned at the rainbow Chalee sent; Jimmy Bryant receiving around and gave back to Riana, the fastest time award given by Riana, Chalee’s sister Chalee’s sister. Chalee really enjoyed teasing and joking with Jimmy. It was an awesome end to an awesome day!!! This event would never have been such a success and so much fun without all the many volunteers! You all rock!!! Some of you had never even been to a barrel race, yet you were willing to help out for more than 12 hours!! The barrel racing community is such an amazing group of people. You all have supported a devastated family heal a little by giving your heart, time, and money. Chalee was a helper; we are just following her lead!! Thank you all!!

Hello Everyone, Here we are into the new year! All of our State Finals have passed and we had a lot of good ones. I was able to personally attend the State Shows for OH, PA, IN and KY all of which went very well. Lots of fun and great horses and riders! I want to thank everyone from each show for all their hospitality especially those from PA where I didn’t know as many people. As we look at the new year there are many great things to come. The new location of our National Finals is a start. While attending the IN IBRA State Finals I was able to get some ideas for our National Finals. Steve Jackson, arena manager for C Bar C Expo Center, and owners Cindy and Carl Harlan gave me a lot of faith in our decision to move our finals location! The crew at C Bar C just impresses me more with every call and visit.
We are working to bring more Preferred Shows to new areas for our members. Look forward to some new Preferred Shows to come your way! Jaco Brands is coming about as our National Finals Sponsor. Look forward to seeing some awesome tack at the finals this year. Jaco Brands offers a fresh unique look to tack and apparel. Be sure to check out their website and products at http://jaco.seedcms.com/. If you are needing a stall or electric you need to get those in ASAP. We will bring in portables as needed. No one is guaranteed a stall or electric spot until it is paid for. They are first come first serve. If we sell out of stalls we will allow overnight tie outs at that point. There is a new dress code in the rule book for the National Finals you must wear a button up shirt with a collar. Please help spread the word! Thanks again for all of your support to the IBRA, Shane Cline
State News Ohio State Show Review and Results With much cooler weather than last year, June 26th kicked off an evening of fast runs for the 2013 OHIO IBRA STATE FINALS. Jimmy Bryant found himself at the pay window with the fastest Open run for the night. With 24 Master Runs, 42 Youth, and 155 Open Barrel Racers we toppled over last years entries of 107 in the Open! After running into the night on Friday, Saturday Morning’s sunshine met us with even more entries pulling up the long drive at the beautiful Circle G Arena. Youth Barrel Racers competed against 75 entries, in comparison to last year’s 47. Our Master Class brought in 46 entries, with last year having 36 in the books, and the Open Riders earned their winnings competing with 232 in the class, in comparison to 156 in 2012. Macie Davidson rocked it with a 15.527. After a Cowboy Church Service Sunday Morning, we started the show early bringing in 42 Master Riders, unlike the 22 riders we had last year, 56 Youth Entries, 14 more than last year, and the majority of Open riders stayed parked for the night leaving 187 to run, with last year’s numbers showing 138. Valerie Watson won the Open Buckle. Open Division Winners Saturday & Sunday were awarded Monsoon Buckles, along with their winnings.
Friday Classes, Pole Benders seemed to enjoy having a chance at a little Added Money Saturday evening, and the Pee Wee Riders were found cheering each other on Sunday afternoon - what a great group of kids. Each were awarded a State Finals Trophy. We hope all our Coloring Contest participants enjoyed their prizes. Although a chillier evening than expected, the Water Balloon Toss was not about to be cancelled, after being asked several times, we finally started filling balloons. If we would have awarded anymore Saddles, it would have looked like a Tack Shop was opening in the corner of the arena. Between Saddles, Buckles. Headstalls, Breast Collars, Back On Track Sheets & Polo Wraps, Logoed Buckets, Director’s Chairs, Bridle & Groom Bags, Horse Coolers, Purina Hydration Hay, Purina Supplements, and Jackets...the Top Ten in the Open, and Top Five in the Youth & Masters were awarded for their runs during the 2012-2013 season. Thank you to everyone that was able to lend a hand. Everyone working together made this show a success, and thank you to our Barrel Racers for all your miles, hard work, and dedication. Let’s get ready to lay down some runs at the 2013 IBRA NATIONAL FINALS!!!
Unsure of whether a full Friday Evening Show would gather riders, it proved to be a success with a lot of great feedback. Along with adding 502-239-4000 office 502-239-4100 fax Shane@ibra.us

Dear KY members,
Thank you all for your support of the IBRA! This past year we had our largest membership to date and more shows approved than ever before. This is all due to your fantastic support. There have been some questions and suggestions made that we are listening to and it is my personal goal to make the KY IBRA better every year. We will start by making the KY State Finals cheaper for everyone to try and encourage more people to come. There will be more details on this to come within the next couple months! We had a nice state finals this year with some very tough competition. Two IBRA National Finals Champions we in attendance with one, Trevor Pruitt and Walts Rockin Roll, winning Saturdays Open and the Youth on Sat. and Sunday. It would be Kelly Bruce and her standout gelding affectionately know as Smash that would “Smash em up” over the course of the weekend. The team won a collective total of nearly $1300 and ran the fastest time of the weekend by over two tenths with a 15.348 in Sundays Open! Our year end standings were incredibly close this year. We had many changes on the leader board over the weekend and the year end Champions were as follows: Open 1D: Janis Wagner and Reneoni Open 2D: Bryan Isham and Special Open 3D: Chris Hancock and Cash Money Open 4D: Elaine Mudd and Reba Youth 1D: Taylor Turner and Bernie Youth 2D: Tory Tate and Romeo Youth 3D: Leslie Sloan and Rio Masters 1D: Chuck Wathen and Sign High Masters 2D: Becky Corder and Lady Masters 3D: Elaine Mudd and Reba

National Pole Bending
Story by Dirk Carnahan Pictures provided by: NPBA and Puhl’s Photography
Association
Championships P
ole benders from all across the country came to the Central Kentucky Ag Expo Center in Liberty Kentucky for the 2013 NPBA National Championships over the weekend of June 28th through June 30th.
2013 was a near record turn-out as fast pole benders travelled from as far as Texas, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Florida and Canada to compete for a share of the record prize money. Many pole benders and spectators came just to witness the camaraderie, sportsmanship and the good times on which the NPBA continues to build a reputation. The fun and fellowship of the weekend, the various side competitions and contests, and the vendors who offered quality and unique goods were not a disappointment. The weekend started with the 2013 Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Dinner. Exhibitor Chuck Givens, horses Smoky 2 and Driftwood Mort, Sire Redneck Jet and the Stephanie Marcum Sportsmanship inductee, Lonnie Willen, were recognized for their greatness and inducted into the company of legendary names of the sport. After a fantastic dinner and a night celebrating the rich history of the sport of pole bending, it was time to see fast horses going after a share of more than $50,000 in cash and prizes. William Ball and May B Noble took home the NPBA Open Championship buckle with an average of 19.297.
Page 24
The weather was perfect and
Payton’s time of 19.248 in the NPBA Slot Race earned the title of “World’s Fastest Pole Bender” for 2013. Along with record prize money, the win earned Payton and Moon Struck Sue a spot alongside previous winners on the prestigious World’s Fastest Pole Bender Trophy. The 19.248 was an arena record at the Central Ky Ag Expo Center and also set a new NPBA Championship Show record.
so was the footing. The NPBA Championship is always the home of fast pole bending. Horses and riders were on the top of their game all weekend long. The weekend showcased many 19 second runs and a new NPBA arena and Championship Show record. A downed pole was the only thing that prevented an eye popping official 18 second run. The Merial $10,000 added NPBA Open Championship was won by William Ball and May B Noble with an unreal 2 run average of 19.297.
NPBA Janis Wagner and her 3 year old Peroni won the Neace Lukens NPBA Kindergarten Championship in 20.920 seconds.
Trent Tobin and TT Redneck Ninja had a very successful weekend. The pair won the Stephanie Marcum Memorial Amateur Championship with a 2 run average of 19.836. Trent and TT Redneck Ninja also won the Limestone Equipment NPBA Championship Futurity and the Kentucky Quarter Horse Association $250 bonus. (below)
Ashton Woodard and Leos Stormin Venture won the Kickin J’s NPBA Rookie Championship and only needed 21.143 seconds to do it. (above) He didn’t finish far ahead of the 2013 Kickin J’s NPBA Pony Champion, Hope Kelley on Rusty Boy. Haley and her sorrel pony ran the course in 21.704 seconds. (below) The big winner of the weekend may have been Payton Carnahan. Payton started the weekend by winning Fridays director race with a 19.8. Then he and Moon Struck Sue placed 3rd in the 1st go of the Saturday Open with a 19.587. The pair were just getting started though. Payton won his 2nd NPBA Youth title with a 2 run average of 19.959. Along with his prize money Payton took home an NPBA custom 4 wheeler for his Youth Championship. (below - also below, 1D Youth Average Winners)
Katie Pride won the Jasper Engines Open stake race on her AQHA World Champion Stake racer, Hoosier Daddy. (below)
Page 25
NPBA Then, in the featured event of the weekend Payton and Moon Struck Sue electrified the crowd by besting a field of former World Champions, Congress Champions, Slot Race Champions, and pole bending Hall of Famers to blister the field and win the slot race. Payton’s time of 19.248 earned the title of “World’s Fastest Pole Bender” for 2013. Carnahan’s record time was almost immediately challenged by Troy Priddy and BW Tiny Jet. Troy and his horse ran just a few slots after Payton and just missed an 18.809 by knocking down a pole. William Ball also made a run at the new record with his 19.272 the very next day in the 2nd go of the Open.
Krystal Gerbick & Royal Red Deck - IL, 21.299 - 1st place in Second Go Round of the NPBA Open 3D
The 2013 show was an enormous success. The success of 2013 is also a steppingstone for an even bigger and better 2014 NPBA Championship. Plans are already underway for 2014.
3D Youth Average Winners
It wasn’t only the 1D winners who shared in the record cash and prize awards. The NPBA Championship show featured talented 2D and 3D horses. Many of these horses ran times fast enough to win the 1D at other shows. The 2D and 3D winners were a huge part of a successful National Championship Show.

“There are many skills and maneuvers that people tend to classify as either Western or English. But the truth is horses are horses - their balance is the same, the way they move and the way in which the rider uses the aids for cueing are the same. The appearance of your clothes and tack doesn’t really change that.” - Julie Goodnight “It’s hard to lead a cavalry charge if you think you look funny on a horse.” - Adlai E. Stevenson II “When I hear somebody talk about a horse or cow being stupid; I figure it's a sure sign that the animal has somehow outfoxed them” - Tom Dorrance Page 30
“My troubles are all over, and I am at home; and often before I am quite awake, I fancy I am still in the orchard at Birtwick, standing with my friends under the apple trees.” - Anna Sewell, Black Beauty “In riding a horse, we borrow freedom” - Helen Thompson

ost of you probably think that the 2013 NBHA Ohio State Finals started at noon on Friday, but what you didn’t know is that it all started Thursday night with the exhibition. Young, old, new, and advanced riders showed up to polish their horses for a run the next day that would be the start to a good or bad weekend. As I watched each horse make their run, I realized how family oriented the NBHA is and what a great association they are. The next day, the rain stopped and the sun peaked through the clouds. Then at the strike of twelve, the first horse in the open division hit the dirt. Crystal Haskins was third out of the alleyway and held the lead for almost half the class before Dale Brown, running right before the drag, took over the top position. Unfortunately, Dale only held the lead for a dozen horses before Dawn McCarty and her new grey horse, laid down a 16.107 and took over the top spot. The lead would change several more times before landing on its true owner. The new breed of barrel racers brought their youth and skills to the arena in hard and fast fashion. Run after run came and went and the lead changed multiple times. The kids were showing the adults that even thought they were young, they were a force to be reckoned with. The top kids were setting themselves up for a great finals come Sunday. The seniors answered the call of the youth with their own impressive runs. As I watched the “experts” guide their horses around three cans that were threatening to ruin their chance at the finals, I had to smile. Even though I have been running a long time, I still learned something from these mature riders who seemed to bring an air of class to the arena.

Youth Winners
Clockwise from top left: Youth 1D Champion Morgan Henning & Heros Dashin Lady, Youth 2D Champion Aaron Musgrave & Andre, Youth 3D Champion Raya Augenstein & Izzy Saturday found the same open, youth, and senior riders vying for the last few spots available in the finals. Those that were already qualified ran for the extra paycheck, whereas those others were running for the chance at glory. That night, another animal on four legs took over the pen. Dogs of all shapes and sizes hit the dirt to prove that they were more than just cute. The small dog class found Brawley, with owner Samie Kume, rocketing to the top spot. Mike Hulsinger and Mia beat out the competition in the medium dog race. And Amy Riley beamed with pride of her large dog class winner, Simon. Cowboy Church started out the day and moved right into the youth finals. A challenge insued to run faster and quicker than the next. The hottest competition came between the Henning girls, with Morgan taking the whole kit and caboodle but was followed close behind by Regan. The boys were not to be shut out of the first division by Justin Theado taking the third place. Jessica Blanton took up the fourth spot while Lexie Shipman brought her snappy Appy to the pay window and the 5th position. It was an unforgettable run for Brandi Schnitkey and her horse Unforgettable Copy, bringing home a check in the 6th spot. The second division was just as tough competition as the first. position and a hefty check. Next in line for prizes was Devin Humerickhouse in the 3rd spot and Jaiden Deubler in 4th with a time of 17.146. District OH07 got one of their own in the 5th position with Kayla Korek and her horse Diamond. Jen Ewing proved she deserved a piece of the pie with two constant runs and took home a 6th place check. The youth didn’t stop showing up and laying down their best runs in the third division. Raya Augenstein and Izzy showed them what it looked like from the top spot, while Kristi Hupp was hot on her trail in second. Cheyenne Wiley showed she was no wimp by stepping up her game from her first run and sneaking a 3rd place check. Siara Swisher took home 4th place money and Erika Billingsley grabbed up the 5th spot. Mike Hulsinger was on fire in the Senior class with Jones Is On Fire, taking home the win. Rene Hefner came back with a hard fought year and a second place finish in the first division. Nancy Adkins had a profitable weekend with a 3rd place finals. Wes Blum and Ellen Mckee were a flap of a birds’ wing apart in 4th and 5th spot, while Mari Lynn Taube was riding high with a 6th place finish on High On Champagne. The second division of the Senior finals found Dave Morris on top and Becky Dixon a close second. Donna Shoemaker showed why she
deserved the 3rd spot money and Lori Cassilli owned the 4th position. Fifth and sixth place went deserveringly to Kathy Clark and Tom Ternes. Bill Seal had a big payday by sealing the top spot in the third division with his mount, Payday. Judith Anderson and Reddy’s Mark left their mark on the arena dirt by taking the reserve spot. The Perfect Vixen gave hope to Christine Hope and also a 3rd place check. Fourth place prize money went to Stefanie Bynum and John Ridenbaugh rode Handy Smashed Streaker to the 5th spot. Debra Lacy rode expertly to grab up the 6th spot. After a brief break to water and groom the arena, the open riders got their chance at the championship. The fourth division riders showed their true colors and laid down some good runs. Becky Johnson got her piece of the pie by taking 3rd place, while Lexi Witter earn a few dollars with a reserve championship. Christy Bell was nimble in her run and took home money and prizes by winning the fourth division title. The third division riders came into the arena showing that even though they were a second off the fastest time, they also belonged in that arena to prove their worth. Kirk Lutz took the third spot with ease and Sue Collier rode LA

Trips My Tigger to a second place finish. The third division title went to Dustin Whitesel and Bully’s Country Girl. The second division was made up of super stars in their own right. Everyone was on the fence rooting on the third place rider, Kelly Bowser and Roll Em Up Snoopy. Jessica Blanton thought she was dreaming with her reserve championship and Mike Hulsinger was on fire once again, taking home the second division championship. The top three riders in the first division didn’t
leave very much time between them. Dashing into third spot was Morgan Henning with a 15.843 and taking home another check. The reserve championship went to Brad Shirey and Pretty Boy Bullion clocking a 15.795. But top honors went to a smoking run of 15.757 from a horse who was a Little Bit Of Cowboy and his cowgirl companion, Heather Palmer. Looking back on the weekend, I met some really neat people, made some really great
friends, and saw some really awesome horses. All the district directors were gracious hosts and showed why NBHA is the original Barrel Horse Association. Even though the rain threatened to put a damper on the whole weekend, the sun was shining along with the division finalists. All finals results can be seen below and at www.ohionbha.com Congrats to everyone!

Quarter Horse Racing Hello! When I saw leaves falling from a tree the other day it was a sad reminder that Fall is soon to be here. The year has Ă&#x;own by, and we have been blessed with great racing and many fast horses in Indiana this year. Fall always kicks off a busy time for QHRAI and our horsemen. The QHRAI Application to the IHRC is due September 1st and we have been busy preparing it so the QHRAI can once again be considered to represent the Quarter Horse Racing Industry in Indiana. It will be presented for approval in the October Commission meeting. There will be very important horsemenĂ•s meetings on September 24th and 26th at Indiana Downs. These meetings are to gather important information from the stakeholders in our industry and use that information to help prepare for the race season in 2014. Owners and trainers will be meeting on September 24th and breeders and sire owners will meet on September 26th. The meetings will begin at 5:00 pm and dinner will be provided. Everyone is encouraged to attend. Quarter Horse Day is October 12th and we have a huge line up of races that day! Tye Murray is going to be here to talk about his bull riding experiences, sign a few autographs and throw some t shirts. Tye has some connections in Indiana. He is brother to Kimber Jamison, wife of Johnny Jamison our starter and track superintendent. We appreciate everything they do for us and helping to make this event a special one with Tye and his family! The third annual QHRAI Speed Sale is October 13th, the day after Quarter Horse Day and is going to be held at the Marion County Fairgrounds. The sale is going to offer horses of racing age, yearlings, weanlings and mares. This is a great opportunity for you to come buy a horse so you can get involved in the great Indiana Racing Program. Finally, looking into early 2014, hold the date for the Stallion Service Auction on January 4th. We are going to repeat the owners and trainers seminars the day before, so plan now to attend both days. Its going to be at the Crowne Plaza Hotel at the Indianapolis Airport. Best of luck to everyone racing in September and October!

Back to the Boots Welcome to September; the days are getting shorter, Quarter Horse Congress is on our minds & it is time for some new boots. I’ve selected eight wonderful pairs of cowboy boots to get you in the mood for fall. These boots are pretty & might not be barn suited but they are definitely worthy of a night out & daily use.
All of the boots were found at Allen’s Boots. I stuck to a neutral palette of tans, browns & black. These Lucchese Mad Dog boots have beautiful leather that is embroidered with tan stitching & peacock accents. (top left) The studded Liberty Black boots embrace more of biker vibe but are very versatile for fall. The offer adjustable buckles & have just the right amount of hardware. (top right)
Fringe & Floral I love fringe, shown here in tan are the Liberty Black tan fringe boots. They also come in other bolder colors too. (bottom left) Lucchese’s carved leather boots with buckles are absolutely beautiful; this might be my favorite pair. They are elegant & classy. (bottom right) Page 40

Remember, nothing says fall...
On the bolder side are these Lucchese Seminole cowboy boots with black, red & turquoise. When colors like these combine, it’s going to be a beautiful boot. (top left) Tan hand carved Lucchese boots are a traditional western trend that never goes out of style. These boots could be worn year after year without looking dated. (top right)
Old Gringo’s black studded cowboy boots are also a great versatile choice. (bottom left) The Marsha Razz cowboy boots by Old Gringo look great with zippers. These also come in other colors but I like them best in black, where they offer the most versatility. (bottom right) Remember, nothing says fall like new boots!

ad the wonderful opportunity to sit by a river over the weekend alone in the early morning hours. In the solitude of nature, I watched leaves appear and float by in the slow moving current. They came and they were gone. They had grown over a season and fell from their life source. They had lived, they died and they were carried away. Without a relationship to that which they had been attached, their existence had meant little in the grand scheme of things. A tree does not miss its leaves. It does not feel less complete. It does not miss or mourn. Simply, the tree has no feelings. And just like the tree, when the leaf falls into the river, the river does not notice its presence. It has no awareness with which to experience the rippling effect. As relational beings and as a part, although comparatively small, in the existence of mankind we do not detach from others like a leaf. Inherent in our essence and to our core, we are interpersonal beings. Truly, “no man is an island unto himself.” We may or may not be comfortable as “social beings”, but human relationships are essential.
As volition beings, we can fall away from others by choice. We can choose to detach from the world. In our withdrawal, the world may lose the possibility and potential of our contribution. But, my friends, I believe isolation and withdrawal do not prevent contribution. There are people who contribute actively to the world around them. They interact personally and participate passionately in life and with others. There are those, like me, that find comfort and contentment in distance from others. Neither group is precluded from accomplishing significance in the world. We are not leaves floating on the river. The current of life feels us drop into it, the ripples spread its affect over all of mankind and we do not flow beyond the horizon unnoticed. When our season is over, we will be evaluated by others, ourselves and God for what we have done with our time. How will we use our time?
LivExceptionally, Chris
In death, we are missed. Our family tree feels a void. It is less complete. We are missed and mourned. Unlike the tree or the river, we have feelings and senses.

Ask the Vet with Dr. Steve Fisch, DVM
Dear Horse Resource - Ask the Vet, We purchased two nice broodmares last year and had our first foals born this spring. We are new to this “raising babies” and are trying to make sure we do things right to raise strong, healthy race prospects that hopefully will go on to second careers someday. Is there anything special we should do to help them mature as strong and healthy as possible? And are there any special precautions we should take as far as their safety? Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thank you, Concerned new “Mom”
Above: Florida champion Mr Speed Wrench growing up strong in a Dear new Mom, large pasture. In this photo he is already halter broke and preparing Congratulations on your new broodmares and babies. To answer your to be a winner. Inset: Tsunami 09 winning the All Canadian Futurity questions we will assume that the babies are healthy at this point and at Ajax Downs in 2011 by a slim margin. that you chose broodmares with good conformation. We will also assume that you have the mares back in foal and want the babies all year. There are several good brands out there but an example of born in 2014 to be sound and healthy and have second careers. As a good brand is Nutrena’s Mare and Foal. It has the proper amount we have stated before, strong healthy babies with good conformation of micronutrients, the proper calcium and phosphorus ratio and the that have a good chance of staying sound for second careers start with proper protein and energy levels to allow the mare to produce good a good selection of a good sire and dam. Genetics plays a strong role in quality milk, maintain her new growing pregnancy and to maintain longevity and soundness along with speed and ability. her own health. The nutrient levels in a feed like Nutrena’s Mare and Foal also allow the growing foal to grow at the proper rate and to form Soundness also starts in the womb or uterus. Therefore the mare must sound joints and muscles with less chance of developmental orthopedic be fed correctly from conception. The most critical time of pregnancy diseases (DOD) such as osteochondritis desicans (OCD), clubbed feet, for proper nutrition is the last trimester. We actually keep our mares epiphysitis and other developmental diseases. and foals on a feed formulated for lactating mares and growing foals
Page 44
Ask the Vet with Dr. Steve Fisch, DVM Depending on the time of year and the grass availability we feed a mixture of two types of hay. In winter and early spring we feed a mixture of either 30% to 50% alfalfa or perennial peanut hay (both are legumes of equal nutritional value) and 50% to 70% good quality coastal Bermuda grass hay. We let the babies’ and mares’ body condition tell us whether to feed 30% legume hay or closer to 50% legume hay. When our grass is good we let the grass take the place of the coastal Bermuda grass hay but still feed the legume as a good source of calcium and protein. In mid to late fall we start back feeding the coastal Bermuda grass hay and feed it free choice until the grass is doing well again the following spring.
Above left to right: Photo of carpus valgus; Photo of foal post surgery; Photo of clubbed feet; Photo of foal post surgery. Both conditions can sometimes be prevented by careful daily monitoring. Below at right: weanlings learning to run and building strong joints and supporting structures in a large pasture. Future soundness and fitness begins at birth.

It is a good idea to carefully go over the babies and mares at least once weekly to evaluate their body condition and growth. This allows you to catch problems before they become difficult to correct. The mares should be kept at a body score so that you can feel their ribs but not see them. In some heavy milking mares this is difficult. These heavy milking mares must be feed more calories in the form of mare and foal feed or hay or both. Sometimes if the baby is eating well on its own and is in good health and weight and is four months old or older, then we may wean the baby from a mare that has difficulty maintaining her weight. Last month we talked about weaning methods that cause less stress for the mare and foal. We use the method that pulls out one or two mares at a time from the broodmare and baby pasture. DOD’s to look for each week are angular limb deformities such carpus valgus and carpus varus which are basically knock kneed and bow legged front or back legs. Clubbed feet are common problems in babies. One cause of a clubbed foot is a lameness problem in the non clubbed leg. Another cause is that babies tend to have short necks so as they lower their head to graze they tend to put the same leg back and the same leg forward. The leg that always goes back will have more of a tendency to become clubbed. If detected quickly, these conditions can sometimes be treated easily with stall rest. If detected too late, they many times need surgery or at least some type of corrective shoeing. Epiphysitis or inflammation of the growth plates is another DOD that can be treated by adjusting nutrition levels if detected early. Big pastures to run and play in and good nutrition and good genetics make for sound horses. At this point we have the genetics and nutrition covered. Once we get the mares pregnant again they and their new babies are shifted to either a 17 acre pasture or a 35 acre pasture with rolling hills. This allows them to run and buck and play up and down hills with their friends. The socialization helps them mentally learn to live and interact with other horses and the play time in a large pasture helps development.

Hello everybody!!! School is back in session. The fair shows are winding down...they are always fun to take the colts to. We took a vacation away from horses and went to South Haven Michigan took our wave runners (the water was 49 degrees.) We also went on a dune-buggy ride in the dunes. That was really fun. Congratulations to Katie Brown from Tennessee on winning the NBHA 1D Teen Youth World Championship and also congrats to all the other champions. This month has gone to the dogs so to speak. I mean, what’s cuter than kids and dogs?

Clint Clint is a graduate of East Central High School. His parents are Terrie VanVolkenburgh and respectively Joe Trentman. He has grown up in the horse world, both parents have rode almost all their life...Clint's grandfather as some of you may remember was the late Terry VanVolkenburgh, who would run up and down the fences when his daughters would run barrels. Clint began barrel racing at the age of 4 with a pony, then went on to particpate in Jr. Rodeo and his favorite event was the sheep riding, hard to believe he is now a barrel racer. He has won the Ohio Youth NBHA and Indiana Youth and Open NBHA , he has also won the Congress youth barrel four times, and was runner up in the Congress Sweepstakes. He placed at Josey Jr. world numerous times, and won the NBHA Youth World 1D in 2006. He loves to barrel race and is now trying his hand at the futurities. In Clint's spare time he mows grass for a part time job and is also very active in his church where he and his cousins are bible school helpers. Clint also volunteers one day a week at a school in Cincinatti where he spends time tutoring other kids in reading.
Went and visited my 93 year old grandpa on way to state show !!! He used to come watch me every year!!!

The Dog Days of Summer
Boy is it HOT! I think summer was a little late getting here, but now that it’s finally arrived it is making up for the cooler temperatures we enjoyed in July and August. I’m really having a hard time getting motivated to go to the barn and chase mice with it this hot outside. I’ll admit it.......I prefer the air conditioning. I’ve heard the people referring to these late summer hot spells as “The Dog Days of Summer.” I think Clint Van even mentioned them this month in his Teen Corral. To tell you the truth, I’m actually not sure how to take that name. I mean, I’m a dog, what do blazing hot, sticky summer days have to do with me? Where did that term even come from? Guess what....I have GOOGLE!!! It appears that the term actually comes from the Ancient Romans and it refers to the a period of time when the “The Dog Star” (Sirius) is
aligned a certain way with the sun. Wow! I had no idea!
this past month thanks to my curiosity and Google:
Sirius (the dog star) is the brightest star in the sky - how appropriate - and is located in the constellation Canis Major.
•
So, “The Dog Days” have nothing to do with yours truly (or my kin.) Hmmmmm...good to know. Thank you, Google. Honestly, I think I am becoming a little dependent on my computer and it’s ability to answer almost any question I ask it through my favorite search engine. I have leaned a lot from this new pastime.... some to expand my intelligence...some not so much. I thought you might like to learn along with me, so I’ll share some things I have learned
• • • • • • •
Dachshunds come in a variety of colors - Maybelline is called a “Black and Tan Piebald with Ticking” Flies live for about a month (the one that caused this search didn’t live that long) Horses are pregnant for about 340 days (or around 11 months) OMG!! Coyotes do eat cats (and small dogs) even better reason to stay inside after dark. Fleas do not have wings...but they can jump reeaalllly far Cornstalks grow to 15 feet tall...some as tall as 18 feet! Glad I can follow my nose. Florence and The Machine sings “Dog Days Are Over” There are several famous Jack Russell Terriers! Including the RCA dog - Nipper, Marty Crane’s sidekick in the TV show “Frazier” - Eddie and of course from the movie “The Mask” - Milo!
Isn’t Google great? I even had to prove to Miss Maybelline that there is a company out there with her name... she didn’t believe me at first! She thought maybe she was born with it...(her name, I mean!) She’s always chasing me around asking questions. (Literally, as you can see!) Until next month, Always on the run and.... STILL loving Google!!

he 2012-2013 IJRA season wrapped up in Columbia City, IN at the State Finals on August 10th and 11th. IJRA members from all over the state of Indiana came to compete at their chance to win State Finals Average Championships, Year End Titles, and 2012-2013 All Around Champions in each of the age divisions. We had great weather, great competition, and a weekend that gave the kids a chance to make many great memories with their friends and family. Every year at our State Finals we crown a new IJRA princess for the season. Congratulations to all of the contestants this year! Each of you represented our association well and we are very proud of each of you. Lexy Petro was crowned our 2013-2014 IJRA Princess this year. Krislynn Lancaster
This was my first year in IJRA and I’m so happy I joined. My main goal for this year was to have fun and let me tell you I have had a blast. My favorite memory though was in Edinburgh when my friend Tilly, Brandon, and me all went on a walk. Although I had a lot of fun with my friends competing was my favorite part. I competed in Barrel racing, pole bending, goat tying, and ribbon roping. Because this was my first year in rodeo I learned a lot from how to saddle a horse to the art of each event. Therefore, I would like to thank my parents, and Cory Griffiths, and Rachel Thomas for teaching me what I know and helping me have such a great year.
Page 52
Brandon Tolbert
Hello! I’m Brandon Tolbert and I’m 14 years old. I have been a member of IJRA for 2 years. I compete in bull riding, chute dogging, breakaway roping, team roping and calf tying. When I first started IJRA I only competed in bull riding and chute dogging but have learned a lot and added more events. The opportunity to travel and meet new people while also improving my skills has been an amazing adventure. I appreciate all the help that other parents and fellow competitors have given me to help me improve my skills.
IJRA News Anna Dietrich
I’ve only been in the IJRA for 2 years, but those years have taught me a lot. I’ve made many new friends and it has shaped me as a person. Last year I got girls reserve allaround and some event buckles. This year I hope to do as well if not better. In the future I hope to be competing well on a national level. Making the NFR is my dream and IJRA is one step of the journey.
Jacob Rorig
Hi, my name is Jacob Rorig and I have been in IJRA for 3 years. I compete in Chute Doggin, Breakaway, Tie Down, and Team Roping. I have experienced so much while in IJRA. I have learned how to really toughen up in the chute doggin, because the steers are so different from one rodeo to another. Also with all of the different places we go, I have learned how to adjust to different arenas. I have met a lot of people and have made a lot of new friends. I have learned how to adjust to things whether you like them or not and go on. If you don’t get a time, leave it in the arena and move forward. This year I had set a goal in chute doggin, and that was to try and get every steer down. I almost made it. I did lose one in the season. I had drawn the same rank steer 5 rodeos in a row in the first part of the season this year and he had fractured 4 of my ribs the first time I drew him. I finally went to the doctor after the next rodeo when I drew this steer again and he did more damage to my ribs. The doctor told me to set out for 6 weeks but I told him I would rest after the next 2 rodeos. I just gritted my teeth and went on. I was really proud of myself for my achievement in chute doggin this year. I have also had a pretty good year in my tie down. I wish I would have had my new horse earlier in season maybe it would have been a little better. I am looking forward to going to high school with this horse to see how it ends up. As I move on to high school I hope to achieve all of the goals I set. I guess time will tell. I wish all of my friends moving on to high school the best of luck and also the friends I leave behind. Good luck to all of you!

First of all I would like to thank my Dad for hauling me to all of my rodeos and I would like to thank my sponsors. I would also like to thank Mike Mackey and Pam Mackey for teaching me horsemanship and riding skills. This is my 5th year in IJRA and my favorite memory is catching my first calf. I have really enjoyed the rodeo environment and have made a lot of great friends. I hope the IJRA can go on for many years and continue to help kids learn to rodeo. I would also like to thank Cory Griffiths for letting me borrow his horse. We all love you, Cory!
Tucker Whitten
I have been in the IJRA for 6 years, I have learned so much and improved my rodeo skills greatly since I started. My achievements in the IJRA include two all-around cowboy awards and a reserve all-around cowboy award. I have also won many event buckles. In the future, I hope to be competing on a national level. One day I hope to be in the NFR, IJRA will have helped my along the way. I have made many good friends and IJRA will help continue the rodeo generation. My younger siblings will continue to be apart of the IJRA and I will stay involved.
Noah Duby
I have been involved with the IJRA for 9 years. Over that time there has been many changes with me and the IJRA. I have learned more than the sport of rodeo. I have had the opportunity to meet hundreds of new friends, travel thousands of miles, ride many different horses and been yard darted off of a few, attended clinics and learn the value of honest effort. I have learned to expect nothing that more than what I put into each run. I have many great memories of the past 9 years from winning my first All-Around to the Cinch Finals in Gallup, New Mexico. I have competed in the following events; mutton busting, chute dogging, calf riding, goat tying, Bull riding, break-a-way roping, Step down and tiedown roping, steer dobbing, Barrels and poles, and team roping. Of all the great times and experiences I have had with junior rodeo, the time most valued is the time spent with my family and helping my little brother and sisters.
Page 53
IJRA News Kyle Mackey
For the past 9 years I have been a member of the IJRA. I have had a lot of fun and made lots of great memories and friends. My favorite event is calf roping and I am looking forward to High School rodeo. My favorite memory is catching my first calf. I have been lucky to have really nice horses that taught me to rope and ride. I would like to thank my parents, grandparents and sponsors for helping me the last 9 years. I would like to wish all the younger kids in IJRA Good Luck!
Addie Keller
My name is Addie Keller, and I have been a part of the IJRA since I was 4 years old. The highlight of the past nine years was receiving my All-Around Saddle. Not only has this association given me buckles, saddles and trophies, it has given me close friendships that I will treasure forever. IJRA has also helped me grow as a person. I have become much more outgoing, and I’m more willing to try new things. I’d like to take the time to thanks a few people that have been part of my experience. First I’d like to thank my parents Chris and Charity Keller for always being there to brush the dirt off and tell me there’s always next time. Second, I’d like to thank the Barricklow family for introducing IJRA to me. Lastly, I’d liket o thank Sydney Hurley for being my best friend through it all, the bad and the good. I’d like to wish all the future contestants luck, and I hope they have as good as an experience as I did.
Trevor Colby
My name is Trevor Eugene Colby. This was my 9th year in the IJRA. Those last 9 years went by surprisingly fast. I collected lots of memories throughout those years. The best memory by far was watching Addie completely eat dirt at Bartonia. Those last 9 years taught me a lot about friendship, people, and most of all, rodeo. I believe that the IJRA was founded to teach children the sport of rodeo while also teaching us great values that will last a life time. I would like to thanks my awesome dad and beautiful mom and family for being there for me and supporting me every step of the way.

Taking the High Road - What Kind of Impression Are You Leaving Behind? It’s not about what we aquire while we are here, it’s not really about how much we accomplish or what we win that will matter in the end. Our story is being written every second of every day and what will matter when it is all over are the paths we have chosen , who’s paths we have crossed and what we leave behind. I’m not referring to what we leave behind in the form of material things....but in the form of the examples we provide to those “following” us and choices we make....the memories and impressions that we leave with others. I looked up the word “impression.” Here is what I learned: im·pres·sion noun 1.a strong effect produced on the intellect, feelings, conscience, etc. We will each leave impressions with everyone we meet thoughout our days. Some will be fleeting, some will be deep and longlasting. The question is....what kind of an impression are we leaving with those in our lives? I often have to ask myself if I am leaving a good impression for my kids.....am I taking the “high road” - so to speak - each day in decisions I make that will determine how they might mimic me in the future when looking back on the example I have set before them. When placed in certain circumstances of everyday life, what kind of impressions are we leaving with those that are watching us? (And they are watching us....whether it is our children, our friends or anyone else.) Taking the “high road” can mean many things to many people, in many circumstances, but it boils down to doing what is right. Now the question becomes, “Who decides which road is the “high road?” And who decides what is “right?” Of course, not all circumstances are black and white and not everything is depicted right there in scripture for reference. When faced with a situation that finds us uncertain of which road to take - which road would be considered the “high road,” scripture gives us many examples of what is right and what is wrong. Not only should we reference God’s word, but we should spend a good amount of time in prayer. Scripture tells us in Philippians 4:6 and 7 what to do and what the result will be....
Page 56
6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. 7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. If we are listening, we should have a feeling about what to do - but we need to be listening. It’s easy to ignore that little voice. It could be something as simple as returning the extra change that was given to us by mistake. It could be telling our spouse we are sorry and that we were wrong (boy, that is a tough one!) It could be owning up to a mistake made at work that caused a co-worker to get in trouble. You get the idea. Sometimes taking the “high road” is easy - and it even shines a good light on us. Sometimes
it can be a tough road to climb. It could even become a little embarrasing....maybe hurt a little - not necessarily in the physical sense, but hurt our pride, hurt our status, hurt our wallet. We have to rememember, in the end, that taking the “high road” and doing the right thing will benefit not only us personally, but also those involved and those being “impressed” by our actions. So, I guess we should ask ourselves: What kind of impressions am I leaving behind? Are they impressions of someone’s footprints along the “high road?” Or am I leading those that are following me down a different path? Happy Trails & God Bless!
Christa
On the Trail
By Brother Brad Curtis of Mountain Top Cowboy Church
NO FEAR Sittin in the saddled High up on a hillside Seen dust in the distance Looked like a speedy ride
If trouble was a`comin I’d stand my ground The Lord was with me When other couldn’t be found
Looking across the prairie No on was on his trail His mind was all scattered Like a covey of busted quail
Lookin` to the heavens Stars for my guide Knowing my Lord was with me Always at my side
I had been up there Talking to my Lord Confessing a few things Now feelin` right and restored
That’s when he rode up I’d seen his face before On a wanted poster Nailed to the jail house door
I said sir you’ll be fine Let me tell you about my Lord Confess to him your sins Heaven is your reward
Got back to he ranch Thinking about that man on the run If he’d only turned to my Lord Confessed the things he’d done
Thought I’d ride down See who was on the spread Always had to keep an eye out For ol’ evil Red
He was packin` iron I had a bible in my saddlebags His cloths were all torn Not much more than rags
Then he spurred his pony Screamin` you better run After all mister You don’t have a gun
Proverbs 28:1 “The wicked man flees when no one pursueth, but the righteous are as bold as a lion.
My pony carried me Down the rocky slope He never stumbled once Kicked him into a lope
Sliding to a stop His face white with fear Shouted at me We need to git on out of here
Stepped off my pony Here I’ll make my stand The Lord is with me This here is our land

One Last (& most important) thought… Salvation is a gift and a choice......
Read past issues of our Christian Cowboy Collection and the Christian Barrel Racer’s Newsletter at the website below!
Jesus died on the cross as the final sacrifice. When He was resurrected on the 3rd day, he defeated Satan for us. All we have to do is believe that He beat death and acknowledge it with our words. If we believe that and accept Him as our personal savior…we are promised eternal life with Him in Heaven. You can’t earn your way into Heaven; you have to believe your way there. So many people think they “aren’t good enough” to get to Heaven… But… Salvation is a GIFT from God and you don’t earn a gift. Gifts are something someone gives to you and for the gift to be yours, you have to accept it. All we have to do is accept that wonderful gift. I know I have…won’t you? But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. Romans 5:15
For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Romans 10: 9-10

trainer Paul Darjean his first in the money finish at Indiana Downs. Little Nip is a Kenneth and Sarah Ramsey product by Kitten’s Joy and out of Broadbush Beauty.
SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; August 23, 2013 – Friday night’s feature race at Indiana Downs came in race 5; a $40,000 allowance optional claimer on the turf for fillies and mares. The favorite Pavla made a five wide move for the win and a one mile route in 1:37.30.
Afleet Lexi set and held the pace until the final sixteenth where she gave way to Pavla and Little Nip. The five-year-old mare and Dylan Davis were able to turn in a respectable third place finish despite weakening late. Afleet Lexi was claimed in tonight’s action but was previously owned by TK Stables and trained by well-known trainer Kellyn Gorder. Afleet Lexi is by Afleet Alex and out of Tarkheena.
Pavla broke the wire for her second win in a row at Indiana Downs while pushing jockey Rodney Prescott nearer to 60 wins this meet. The four-year-old filly is a John Chandler product and is trained by Alex Clarkson. With another win tonight Pavla threatens to eclipse $100,000 in lifetime earnings in the near future. Pavla is by Badge if Silver and out of Rietondale. Little Nip turned in a momentous late run for the lead after being checked earlier on. The four-year-old filly closed hard to the pace for a near miss and a second place finish. With Marlon St. Julien in the irons the veteran filly surpassed $100,000 in lifetime earnings and brought

ITOBA NEWS - Indiana Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association The Jockey Club Projects 2014 Foal Crop at 22,000, Announces Revisions to 2012 and 2013 Foal Crops The Jockey Club is projecting a 2014 North American registered Thoroughbred foal crop of 22,000, it was announced today by Matt Iuliano, the organization’s executive vice president and executive director. The Jockey Club also announced downward revisions for the 2012 and 2013 foal crops to 23,500 and 23,000, respectively. The original projection for both the 2012 and 2013 foal crops was 24,700. Additional foal crop information is available in The Jockey Club’s Online Fact Book at jockeyclub.com/factbook.asp and in the state fact books at jockeyclub.com/statefactbook.asp. The foal crop projection, traditionally announced in mid-August, is computed by using Reports of Mares Bred (RMBs) received to date for the 2013 breeding season. RMBs are to be filed by August 1 of each breeding season. “The revisions to the 2012 and 2013 foal crops are the result of receiving fewer reports after the August 1 reporting deadline of mares being bred,” said Iuliano. The 22,000 foal crop projection for 2014 represents a decline of 4.3% from the revised projection of 23,000 foals for 2013. Stallion owners who have not returned their RMBs for the 2013 breeding season are encouraged to do so as soon as possible. Interactive RegistrationTM, which enables registered users to perform virtually all registration-related activities over the Internet, is the most efficient means of submitting RMBs and is available at registry.jockeyclub.com. The Jockey Club, founded in 1894 and dedicated to the improvement of Thoroughbred breeding and racing, is the breed registry for North American Thoroughbreds. In fulfillment of its mission, The Jockey Club provides support and leadership on a wide range of important industry initiatives and it serves the information and technology needs of owners, breeders, media, fans and farms, among others. Additional information is available at jockeyclub.com.

Indiana Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association - ITOBA NEWS ROAP Board Endorses Penalty Guidelines for Multiple Medication Violations August 23, 2013 - Release- The Racing Officials Accreditation Program’s board of directors voted Thursday to endorse the Penalty Guidelines for Multiple Medication Violations, which passed the Association of Racing Commissioners International (ARCI) Board and Model Rule Committee in July. The vote carried one abstention from the Horsemen’s Benevolent & Protective Association representative on the ROAP board. The Penalty Guidelines for Multiple Medication Violations, which is projected to be implemented in some states as early as January 1, 2014, initiates a point system for equine medication violations similar to that used by state motor vehicle agencies. The rule calls for points to be assigned to every trainer’s fine and suspension history in the ARCI database by way of a separate ruling. That separate ruling would occur in the jurisdiction that issues an underlying equine medication positive test infraction that “triggers” a penalty phase plateau in the points system structure. “We believe that it is important for ROAP to support the current efforts in the industry to unify medication regulations and specifically the new penalty system given that the stewards and judges will be responsible for implementing these regulations at the track level,” said
ROAP Chairman Hugh Gallagher. “This is a rule designed to protect our racehorses first. It is a fundamentally sound rule that is ready for implementation today. What lies before us is the challenging work of having all jurisdictions in full participation, compliance and reciprocity as well a clear understanding of how this rule will be implemented by stewards and judges in North America and the Caribbean.” ROAP accredits stewards, judges, and racing officials in all three disciplines of racing — flat (Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse), harness and steeplechase. Additionally, continuing education courses are required every two years to maintain accreditation. Staying consistent with its mission of education, ROAP will cover the Penalty Guidelines for Multiple Medication Violations in future continuing education seminars. The board also discussed the success of the most recent Accreditation School held this past July at the Kenneth L. Maddy Laboratory at UC Davis and upcoming educational opportunities including the ROAP Certificate Program at Portland Meadows on September 21-22. The ROAP board, ROAP’s Stewards’ Advisory Committee and its Education Committee, will continue to discuss current stewarding issues and educational programs and promote uniformity among racing officials. ROAP, which receives primary funding from The Jockey Club and is based in its Kentucky office, is a 501(c)(6) organization whose board of directors is made up of representatives from 18 industry organizations and eight at-large representatives. Stewards and judges receive their accreditation and continuing education credits through this program. The website address for ROAP is horseracingofficials.com.

This month we are featuring a group that is “giving back” through horses and for horses. After you learn about their mission, you may want to help them out.... Who: Triple R Equine Rescue Ranch. Founded in 2008 by Debbie Richards and the Richards Family. Roscoe (the donkey) and Peaches (the Palimino Pony). Peaches is completly blind in one eye and has sever cataracts in the other which pretty much makes her blind in the other eye. Roscoe is her seeing eye donkey. She follows him around everywhere. She doesn’t let being blind stop her. She is used as a lesson pony and as a meet and greet pony for when vistors like young kids or handicapped people come visit.
Volunteers: The rescue is ran strictly by volunteers and are funded strictly on donations. Where: Greensburg, IN What: A 501(C)3 Non Profit Equine Rescue and Rehab
facility for seized, surrendered, and unwanted equines. Also they run a program called “Unbridled Potential” for at risk kids, teens, and students.
What do they do?

Top: Captain was the first rescue and the inspiration for the rescue. Center: This is Jazzy. When she arrived she was, as you can see, very malnourished. We’re not sure of her background, but after some TLC she is now a lesson horse and 4H horse. Bottom: This is Bo. As you can see, when he arrived, he was exteremely thin. Now hes a fat happy boy that is used as a lesson horse. We arent sure of much of the back ground of many of the horses. Most of them are quarter horses, but there’s such a variety we’ve had standard breds, thoroughbreds, warmbloods, paints, ponies, mini’s, mules, donkeys and anything else you can think of!
Page 66
Noel was one of our 4H students who has a form of Autism called Auspergers. The horse she is on is an off the track thoroughbred named Alagnak. Noel is shown using Alagnak (his barn name was Chester) for Dressage. Sadly Chester passed from severe colic earlier this year.
Triple R Equine is about three things: Rescue, Rehab, and Retirement. They take in animals that have been seized by the authorities for abuse and neglect as well as animals surrendered by owners who do not have the money, means, or physical ability to care for their horses. They have inherited many off-track Thoroughbreds, Standardbreds, and Quarter Horses; as well as mules, donkeys, ponies, and horses of all disciplines. These horses are given the necessary medical attention, housing, feed, and love to help rehab them back to happy and loving equine, whatever the breed may be. When these horses are ready and able to be adopted (some also remain permanent residents of the facility) they are paired with potential adopters based on the family’s needs, wants, and abilities to care for and provide the animal what is necessary to live out a long happy life. This rescue also runs a program for at-risk teens called the “Unbridled Potential” program. This program pairs at-risk teens with horses to learn the physical means necessary to care for horses, teach them responsibility, learning in the class room style as well as riding and everyday horse care. This program offers kids a positive place to go rather than going to places where the “wrong crowd” of kids could be and keeping them out of situations where drugs, alcohol, or other things that could harm these kids or put them down a negative road of life. They are currently in the process of redoing some space for class room learning and saving money to build an indoor riding arena so that the Unbridled Potential program can run throughout the year and not just during seasons that have nice or decent weather for being outside with the horses. Triple R Equine also provides a riding area and meeting facility for one of the Decatur County 4H Horse and Pony Clubs. Debbie Richards also volunteers her time as the leader of the Decatur County Equine Enthusiasts.
How can you lend a “Helping Hoof?” This family is very dedicated to not only horses and equines, but to their community and the kids. Please help us help Triple R Equine. They have been helping kids and horses for so long, its time we lend them a “Helping Hoof.” Items will be presented as a surprise to the rescue on a date that will be determined. Thank you in advance for any help that you can provide!
Donations of any size, expense, or denomination are welcome and are more than appreciated Please mail donations to: Triple R Equine C/O Tabitha Saltzman 271 N. Madison Ave. Greenwood, IN 46142 Tabitha Saltzman - (812) 662-3194 If you have a large or heavy item, please call Tabitha to arrange a time to transfer the item(s).
Mystery of the Month Our Mystery Cowgirl this month is shown riding a nice looking bay horse. It looks as if she is getting ready to compete in a contesting class or a barrel race. We are not sure of the year, but we do know that this pretty lady is still very active in the horse industry in several areas - as is her family. If you know the identity of our Mystery Cowgirl, be the first to send us an email or give us a call with the correct answer to win your choice of a one year subscription to The Horse Resource, a “Horsey Hat” or a “Horsey-T.”
