We use the past continuous to talk about actions that were in progress in the past + Was / Were + Verb+ing (Their cousin was sleeping at 11 am. Can you believe it?) - Was / Were + not + Verb+ing (They weren’t having a barbecue yerterday?) ? Was / Were + subject * Verb+ing (Was her brother checking my Instragram?)


The past continuous gives the idea of longer actions

Past Continuous

It’s used to talk about completed actions or repetitive actions in the past

It’s used to talk about actions in progress in the past. The focus is in duration not completion.

Also it is used to express a longer action that was interrupted by a short one
