Menopause Conversation at Every Age

Lesley George

As women, we hold many positions and spaces, but the one position we can neglect is the essential space of self. Speaking from my personal experience, I lived for decades doing all these things. I did not know what self-care was beyond manicures, pedicures, and massages.

When you reach a certain age, women start asking themselves, what is the meaning and purpose of life as menopause years vibrate louder. Menopause conversation should begin before we reach that age. It is a part of our life, but somehow society treats it like an afterthought.

As I become aware of menopause’s role in the woman’s evolution, which is no different than puberty, I discovered we hold many spaces, and menopause is no different. Menopause is not and should not be a discussion that is discussed in secret or the phase of life that keeps women wondering if they are normal. Being in that type of energy can be discouraging for women, affecting all areas of their lives. Physicians have even told women that the changes they feel are in their heads, making them retreat to themselves even more.

One low-cost solution we can do to normalize the menopause conversation is to create safe communities that support Menopause Self-Care importantly.

The support groups are led by feminist healthcare providers where women experiencing similar changes can share information, resources, and support in a confidential setting. These communities can provide an invaluable opportunity for women to demystify the changes they are experiencing, connect with other women going through similar changes, and learn about self-care practices that can help them during this time of transition.

Selfcare is a broad term, but many have questions for women entering menopause and daughters witnessing their moms and grandmothers go through this life evolution.

Still, they do not know how to start having those conversations. It is time to start the conversation about menopause - let us break the taboo!
