Ho! Ho! Ho! It’s celebration time as the end of the year draws even closer. After a year of trend setting, celebrity spotting, explosive skool events, deadlines and dedications all to deliver the hottest mag to yours truly, we at The Insyder Magazine are certainly counting our blessings and celebrating! Main Feature Cover Story Tamima In this issue we’ve profiled Kenya’s top M.O.G - The Best Of entertainment industry players this past year (according to teeniez) Both Worlds in the 3rd annual Super 20 feature. Who slipped? Who’s made waves? And who’s sitting on the throne? Flip the pages to find out. On the cover is Amani one of the most accomplished artists in the game and I got the opportunity to sit down and have a heart to heart with her. She opens up about her career, personal growth and offers some handy advice. Enjoy! Gratitude, kindness & generosity are in order, our thanks for your mob love and friendship. Merry Christmas! iMC

Yua Holla Party Smart Y’all

Vipi Insyder, Thumbs up for the good job you’ve done entertaining us teeniez this year. The Dec holz are finally here and I know peeps are excited. I just want them to know that it is OK to have a good time but you don’t have to take your clothes off or engage in other harmful activities that might jeopardize you for life. Party smart y’all and remember that too much ‘banjuks’ is harmful to your pocket. This mainly goes to the 404s who’ve just cleared and can’t wait to experiment. T9 -THE PLAYA PREZIDENT

The Playa’s X-Mas Pick-Up Tips Unfortunately not all playas are gifted when it comes to the task of approaching chics. To master this skill (which I have) requires a lot of practice. Since tis the season to be jolly I’ll share some of the basic principles of the science that is approaching chics.

Never Hesitate Never let the fear of rejection stop you from approaching a potential catch, because let’s face it unless your Brad Pitt rejection can sometimes happen to the best of us. But then again never go into the field blindly, observe her body

language this way you can weigh your chances of rejection. If she’s making frequent eye contact, smiles a lot and is fidgeting with her hair, clothing or jewellery go in for the kill.

Flirting With chics First impressions are priceless and are established within the

first three seconds after you introduce yourself. This means that there is no room for error. The best way to flirt is to approach her in a fun and playful way. Chics respond to emotion, thus your goal is to make her laugh this way she’ll associate you with happy feelings. If she does reject you, you probably won’t feel as bad because it was all a fun flirting game.

The Rules

Never hesitate, chics love a guy with confidence

Dec

So you’re in, everything you do from this point will determine the outcome of your encounter. Be confident and don’t use pick up lines. There is no such thing as a miracle line. Ask for her name, compliment it and start talking, don’t give her your name. This is to confirm if she’s interested in you. If she asks for your name after a while, it means she’s interested. If she doesn’t ask, it usually means she doesn’t care. If that’s the case, don’t waste your time with her and move on

2 0 0 9

12

Pick-up lines are a definite No No...

before she does.

A winning Conversation If you’ve made it to this point all you have to do now is ask questions and listen. Speaking to a chic is much easier than it seems. The secret is to let her do all the talking while you do all the listening. In general, women love to chat and gossip. Use this to your advantage. Listen very carefully and ask more questions based upon her answers to keep the conversation

focused on her. Not only does this tactic prevent you from having to find witty things to say, but she will also come to the conclusion that you are a caring person and a good listener.

Having babe problems and need advice? Send your questions to the Playa Prezident himself, Mr. T9 on yuaholla@ theinsyder.com or simply call 0770 325 926

My Chill Factor is... MY FUTURE

SPORTS

Name: Rachael Watati Age: 17 yrs School: Gitwe Girls (304)

Name: Nelson Musana Age: 17 School: St. Nicholas (Ex-can 2009)

Rachael may seem like your everyday kind of gal, that is until you watch her open up a computer and put it back together.

“I love I.T. and everything gizmo-ish. I’ve gotten into trouble a lot of times for taking my dad’s comp apart but I just can’t help myself I always want to know the science behind it. I want to be a software engineer in future and my teachers respect me for that. So does my boyfriend. He cleared high skool last year and helps me study when I’m on holiday. We’ve both decided that some things in life are just more important and sex can wait for my/our degrees and marriage. NIMECHILL.”

to being a Rachael admits gizmo freak

Nelson Musana is an adrenaline junkie and digs sports, if he aint playing simulated cyber space sports, he’s sweating it out in the field playing football. He loves adventure and hopes to sky dive and bungee jump one day.

“It’s important to keep fit and healthy. Chics dig fit guys and I like that. Being super active and engaging in fun sports helps to keep my mind free from sex. It’s not easy ‘chilling’ at my age because of peer pressure but I got my priorities straight. I want a bright and prosperous future in the business and sports industry and I won’t let wrong choices sabotage me. I’ll wait for the right person and the right time.” NIMECHILL!

Joint: Kesho MC: Habida Production: R Kay Review by Marcus Itimu

We all took notice when Habida made her debut

on the smash award winning hit collabo with Nameless on the ‘Sunshine’ joint. ‘Kesho’ is her first solo single and judging by

it Habida is here to stay. Her trademark vocal delivery is nothing short of superb. This joint’s music video definitely caps the crown as we get acquainted with a more sensual Habida, lyrically and otherwise from the upbeat dance routine that she performs backed up by two dancers. ‘Kesho’ is a song about a chic telling her dude that she is tired of waiting

for him to make up his mind about their relationship but it is the approach that totally seals the deal. The song rings in your ears long after you hear it and her beauty lingers in your mind way after the clip is over. One sure thing about this track is it’s the kind you’d definitely press replay to. Paris Scorned = Voodoo So Paris Hilton and Christiano Ronaldo ‘did stuff together’ until Ronaldo decided he wanted to ‘do stuff’ with other people. Well a scorned Paris decided to pay a (few million dollars) visit to ‘Pepe the witch’ who put a curse on Ronaldo’s ankle, which resulted in Ronaldo getting benched for a few weeks. Until he found out the real reason behind his “injury” and decided to call (for 5 million dollars) the big guns, (read Fafa the sorcerer) to exorcise Pepe’s curse. Seriously.

THIS IS IT SCANDAL death, the kids he had wear masks to protect from the public eye, Prince, 12, Paris, 11, and Blanket, 7 are now set to star in a reality TV show, The Jacksons: A Family Dynasty.

B.E.P member Fergie’s marriage might be on the rocks just after six months after a stripper chic alleged that she serviced Fergie’s actor hubby, Josh Duhmel, allegations that he denies. Jennifer Lopez is

also facing some looming scandal of the ‘nude kind’. Her ex-husband Ojani Noa is set to release a memoir film based on his marriage to J.Lo and if he has his way the film will include ‘little home videos of the two coupling.’

After a year full of drama and receiving some serious hits (literally), Rihanna has a new album titled ‘Rated R’. In Neyo’s words “Expect an edgier, almost angrier Rihanna on this one. Rihanna says some things on this album that you’ve never heard her say before.”

Well this will be quite a sad Christmas for Lil Wayne. Weezy is set to join T.I in the big house and expects to serve at least a year in prison after pleading guilty to illegal gun possession. The news comes as the “Lollipop” hitmaker prepares to welcome a son with R&B star Nivea, his third child born in the past year! Drake says that Weezy has been keeping positive and making sure that fans will hear plenty of new music, even while he’s in prison.

M.I’s Illegal Music wanted to ask, why are you so MEAN? Sylvia, Quabbz Sylvia, Coz I CAN, get with the program. I’ll try to be nicer if you’ll try to be smarter. Next? AB. SSsup Bitch, I’m a super fan of T.I’s music but I’ve noticed lately he’s becoming kinda soft. His songs don’t have the kick they used to have like in “you don’t know me”. Has T.I lost his “Umph” factor? Simon, Mang’u

M.I

Sup Bitch, I was watching the MAMAs when I was on middo and I didn’t think it was fair for the likes of M.I to win a MAMA award considering his album ‘ illegal music’ is a collection of stolen tracks. You agree with me don’t you? Mark, Changez Mark, If you’d actually paid

attention, you’d realise that it is this particular album that boosted his shot of winning the Best Hip Hop and Best New Act MAMA awards. How many artists do you know who’ve rapped over super tracks and outdone the original? And then compile them into an album and give it out for free thus making no profit at all? If you’d actually listened to the

album you’d realize he tells the artists that what he is doing is not disrespect but actually an acknowledgement of how good those tracks were .So no Mark, I don’t agree with you! AB Hey Bitch, I read the October issue of the Insyder and I couldn’t help but realise you were a bit crankier than usual and I just

T.I

Dec

Simon, Going to prison gives people a reality check. Follow T.I’s example and stop living in the false reality that a ‘rap guru’ is directly proportional to how much violence he can create and how much money he can throw in the air! T.I’s lyrics have simply became real hip-hop lyrics and not `rap lyrics`. `Hip-hop` is deep and cultured unlike `gangsta rap` which

like you is shallow and quite foolish. I respect T.I’s new refined image more. AB. Niaje Bitch, Have you noticed there is a huge debate about which music is better than the other, local or bongo, personally I think Kenya rules! Jaymo, Sunshine Jaymo, The mere fact that Kenyan music as a whole is still referred to as local music says a lot about the whole debate. Tanzanians have bongo, what do Kenyans have? Local? Yet there are still`subgenres` i.e. kapuka, ghapuka, genge now kapungala? Seriously, before you go declaring that Kenya rules, artists should first get over the miniature squabbling about what name to give their music. Because while stuck in that stupid gutter, bongo took off and left ‘local’ high and dry. AB

Password Keeper Hi Ed, My boyfriend and I share everything, until recently that is. I gave him the passwords to my Facebook account and my phone but he won’t give me his passwords. I’m not one of those galfriends, so why can’t he trust me or is he hiding something from me? Liz Liz, Liz, Liz, Unless he asked for yours and refused to give you his, your boyfriend is not being mean by not giving you his password. Passwords are

meant to be there to protect our privacy and identities. Like countless of chics you’re misinterpreting what your guy means. You’re not looking at both sides of the coin when you think that having his passwords will make you feel closer to him, safer with him and more intimate with him. Trust me, the moment you have all these passwords, the next thing that sets in is curiosity (to know who he talks to), then insecurity (what did she mean by that?), then you’ll become one of those galfriends and everything goes

Dec

downhill from there. From a guy’s perspective giving out passwords is mandatory only under licensed nuptials; marriage. What’s the point of having passwords if you just give them away? Asking for his may actually make him think you’re beginning to doubt the relationship and he’s doing something wrong. Think of it this way: If you kept a ‘Diary’ would you let

him read it? A little mystery is always great in any relationship. You should respect his privacy just as he should respect yours. Don’t force issues.

Eventually you’ll both trust each other enough and sharing this stuff won’t be a big deal. Ed Tha Dude

3rd Annual Super 20

To compile this year’s entertainment Super 20 List, we scoured the music, television, film and publishing industries to determine the celebrities/ institutions who have over the course of the year amassed the greatest: Visual/Audio presence and impact Commercial success Socio-cultural influence Social responsibility General popularity and appeal The list is entirely confined to the impact they’ve created (upon teeniez). Those featured in this list may not necessarily be the best at what they do.

Though we (The Insyder mag) have played a major part and continue to exert extensive influence in the music and entertainment industry in general, for the sake of impartiality, we have decided not to place our organization in the above list.

3rd Annual Super 20 20. Exhibition Stalls - Stylists Supreme All the latest fashion trends can be found at exhibition stalls in town. From those sneakers that you’ve been eyeing, to those coloured jeans, bat wing tops and gladiator shoes that you’ve been oogling at. Exhibition stalls are a one stop shop for all the latest fashion accessories. The best part is they are completely affordable and if you still don’t agree on the price you know what they say, “Hamuwezi kosana.”

19. DVD Stalls - Home Theatres The one place you can go to and give all your money away happily is a DVD stall. They have completely taken over Kenya and seem to be popping up in every street corner. We all love them for their gigantic selection menu of the latest music videos, movies and series. Main stream TV and Movie Cinemas are definitely losing out because we ‘ve aready watched what they’re presently showing the previous month or we are at least three seasons ahead.

17. Pulse - Pull-Out King Pulse magazine remains unbeaten in the game of weekly pull out magazines. They have proven yet again that no other pull out can out cover, out scope them, or out snipe them and this is what makes them the darling of teeniez and all entertainment savvy citizens. Columns like caught out, pics of celebz hanging out and doing their thing gives teeniez an insight that brings them closer to their favourite celebz.

18. Mavuno Dome - Worship Hub This being the year of Gospel Explosion it’s only befitting that Gospel events would carry the torch. Mavuno church has definitely become the hub of all happening hype and worship. The venue has hosted the M.O.G. album launch, Systems Back concert and a Leaver’s bash. Mavuno Dome ranks very high on teeniez list of places to konnect.

3rd Annual Super 20 16. Re-Up - Hottest TV Show This being the only show that actually gives you a record 20 minutes of fame by allowing you to create your own playlist when you are live on air, Re-Up definitely is rocking the tube in the otherwise ‘same old script’ T.V show arena. Their fresh approach and cool music have earned them loyal teen viewers, perhaps other shows should pick a leaf from them.

15. Rush Hour Top Radio Show Shaffie and Kalekye’s Rush Hour show on Kiss 100 FM is the ultimate slam dunk with teeniez countrywide mainly because of Shaffie & Kalekye’s ability to make you forget that you’re stuck in traffic and to actually make you wish you could stay in the mat longer to continue enjoying the show.

14. Esther Arunga - TV Queen We are still convinced that when Ne-Yo sang Miss Independent (if not all his songs), he was singing to Esther. Her class and her smile just makes you want to watch the news over and over again. Second year running Esther stills sits mighty high on the TV Queen crown and remains a darling to many. Kind as she is graceful this lawyer turned anchor and also business ‘lady’ takes time off her busy schedule to serve as role model to young girls mentoring them and influencing them positively.

13. Black Rock - Most Explosive Funkie Saints Black Rock tourney was the perfect merge of skill and style, both on and off the pitch. It offered cats and gals an opportunity to shine in the brilliant game of Rugby and playa/playarettes to carry on their flossing and fronting off the pitch. It was arguably the most anticipated funkie all year. The hype, the madness and the skill all blended in together like a Beyonce choreographed dance routine making it the most attended funkie all year.

3rd Annual Super 20 12. Shaffie Weru - Ruling The Airwaves Egocentric radio presenter Shaffie Weru has carved a nitch for himself on the airwaves with his witty yet painfully honest bluntness. Shaffie and Kalekye’s on-air chemistry on Kiss TV’s Rush Hour has managed to work up just the right magic to keep audiences tuned in. Aside from that the show offers a sample of the latest hits, comic relief by the ‘Gotcha Crew’ as Shaffie punks unsuspecting listeners who’ve been set up by their friends and we can all try our hand at ‘Ten Seconds of Fame’ by displaying our vocal ability, the perfect way to enjoy an afternoon. He’s also one of Kiss TV’s big guns and organizer of the Kiss TV Unplugged Concerts.

11. STL- Biacara Girl Since stepping in the Kenyan music scene 4 years ago, this Norwegian raised babe has made quite a name for herself in her mother land. This CHAT winner with smash hits like ‘Happy’, ‘Dreamer’, ‘Heshima’ and most recently ‘Biacara’ under her belt has gotten a fair share of massive airplay this year. At only 23 this MAMA nominated rapper is receiving critical acclaim for her work. STL has worked on some soundtrack rap for an episode of the American hit series Ghost Whisperer. This has been one busy year for our gal and we’re expecting bigger and better things from her next year.

10.

Mejja - Genge Guru

From humble beginnings in Nyeri’s Majengo, Mejja’s journey is the proverbial of the rags to riches story. This Calif homeboy is causing ripples in the music industry and he ain’t about to stop. Everyone took notice after he released the smash single ‘Kwani jana kulienda aje’ and followed it up with head bobbing hits like Bongo La Biashara, Mezesha, Bro and Mwanisema. Mejja is well on his way to joining the elite crew of genge gurus. His lyrics are catchy and from his comical portrayal of everyday situations his videos are hilarious. Mejja has received major airplay and is arguably one of the biggest acts in Kenya at the moment. Last year, he made a grand entrance at the CHAT awards with his memorable chopper landing stunt,

9. Calif Records - Le Grand Producers It started out as the inception of a long time dream by two friends from Eastland’s California estate, Clement Rapudo (Clemo) and Paul Nunda (Jua), so they launched Calif records in Clemo’s sitting room! They went on to sign up artists like Nonini, Mejja, Pilipili, Rat-a-tat, Jimwizzy, Q-Ta-C, Linnet, Kendi, Alahola, Choku, and the Late Lady S amongst others. Calif is home to this year’s greatest hits like ‘Bongo La Biashara’, ‘Bro’, ‘Ocha’, ‘Si kupenda kwangu’, ‘Ni imbie’, ‘Najuta’, ‘Mwanisema’ and ‘Size 8’. Calif has come a long way and recently they moved on up to Parky suburbs to accommodate their fast growing list of new up-coming artists. Calif is the most sought after recording stable in the country especially with young peeps because of its street cred that lends an edge to its productions.

3rd Annual Super 20 8. Homeboyz Entertainment - Jockey’s With Ambition The Rabar brothers, founders of one of the biggest outfits in the Kenyan entertainment scene must be pretty proud of their achievements. What started out as a music promotion business and a jockey unit has evolved into …wait for it… a radio station, disc jockey school, event organizing outfit, record label, video production unit, music technology academy and most recently a water and beverage franchise. (Only Homeboyz can make water look so cool with their H20 branded mineral water bottles) This 2008 jockey CHAT winners have one of the coolest web sites in Kenya and their T.V show Re-Up is quite popular with teeniez especially the skoolz out segment where they visit schools and let them shout out to their pals. They’ve sponsored major skool sporting events including Blackrock, Junior Sevens and Damu Pevu. They’ve also sponsored funkiez at Jahmu and Parky. With an impressive team of the best jockeys around, DJ Hassan, Wesley, Nruff and John Rabar and engaging presenters like G-money, Mike Wachira, Kui, Corine Onyango, Sheila Rabala amongst others. Homeboyz are also the wheels behind the biggest annual college rave Sepetuka. Word is they might be soon starting a T.V station and a clothing line. Looks like the sky is the limit.

7. Collins ‘Engine’ Injera - Kenya’s Golden boy Football may be the biggest and most popular sport in Kenya but let’s face it; our dear Harambee stars are twinkling less brightly. Rugby which has its strongest grassroots support in High schools seems to be gaining popularity with majority of the population and our national rugby team has surely done us proud. Collins ‘Engine’ Injera a Vatchez high alumnus is a strong player for the Kenyan Sevens squad and has powered the rugby squad’s achievements. ‘Engine Injera’ is the top try scorer for 2008–09 IRB Sevens World Series season with 42 tries and was a nominee for the IRB’s sevens player of the year award which was won by England’s Ollie Philips. Brace yourselves for some mad action from Collins ‘Engine’ Injera next year.

6. AMANI

NEW VIBE NEW SOUND NEW STYLE It’s been a great year for pop star Amani, the release of her hit single ‘Tonight’ has taken the continent by storm bagging her the Best Female award at this year’s MTV MAMA Awards and nominations at the Channel O Music Video Awards. This CHAT award winner’s star has never been brighter. One of the most seasoned players in the game; she’s managed to captivate millions of fans by constantly re-inventing herself. ‘Tonight’ portrays a more glamorous Amani, who delivers flirty and explosive performances to the delight of her legion of fans. Africa has taken notice and this female diva is not about to stop...

iMC: Who is Cecilia Wairimu? Amani: I’m just a simple girlie girl but I’d still climb trees if I have to (laughs). I’m not a party animal I don’t go out much unless it’s business or a special occasion. iMC: What inspired the name Amani? Amani: Amani means peace. Peace of mind is what I value the most in life. iMC: What’s the most important thing in your life? Amani: My family, they keep me grounded. I’m very close to my parents and bro and sis. To them I’m still Wairimu and they don’t take any crap from me, my mom will still send me for errands and I still do chores like everyone else at home. iMC: How did you get into music? Amani: I loved music from the time I was a kid and my mom really nurtured this talent into a passion. She’d encourage me to sing at birthdays, church and I loved every moment of it. When I was all grown I decided to give it a try professionally. iMC: You’ve been signed to Ogopa deejays all your career? Amani: I tried different studios and they just weren’t the right fit for me. It was actually Redsan who introduced me to Ogopa Deejays, the chemistry was there, we clicked and the rest as they say is history. iMC: Do you write your own lyrics and how would you describe your music? Amani: Yes. I get inspired by everyday life. I need sanity when I’m in my creative mode so there’s somewhere I go to in town, watch people and ideas flow from there. I’m a pop artist. I intentionally

chose pop because I felt that it was commercially viable. iMC: The video to your song ‘Tonight’ wow! It’s a totally different Amani? Amani: You could say that because I’ve definitely grown, like fine wine I get better with time (laughs). I’m more mature, more confident in my own skin now. ‘Tonight I’m letting go...’ is a feel good song. I’ve always been a very shy person so scared of what people think but there comes a time when you have to get past all that. I went all out on this video I brought in professionals for everything, clothes, make-up and production. iMC: Where did you get the clothes for the video and did you also do your own make-up (Amani did her own make-up for The Insyder photo shoot)? Amani: No, not for the video, I brought in a professional make-up artist and stylist for that. But I love love clothes and make-up that’s why I went for a course in beauty and make-up from Mac in the USA for a few months, to know how to apply make-up for my skin and my face to bring out my best features. I love clothes so I shop as often as I can when I travel. Clothes are kind of my side hustle, I operate from my house for now but I’m working on opening up a shop. iMC: Do you listen to your own music? Amani: Yes. I’m a fan of me. I like my music but I have a problem watching my videos because I critic them and obsess about how I should have done this or that differently. iMC: You have been in the game for over 8 years, describe your

career? Amani: Well, things weren’t handed to me on a silver platter. I’ve had to work extremely hard to be where I am today. I’ve had to not only improve on my work but also to be dynamic. iMC: How has it affected you as an individual? Amani: My career has challenged me in so many different ways. It has challenged my character and my strength. It has made me appreciate so much. All in all it’s been beautiful

and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. You could say it changed my life. iMC: How so? Amani: I’ve been to so many places all over the world because of my singing career. I’ve met so many different people who’ve touched my life and it’s opened so many doors for me. Personally, it has made me grow, I’m more comfortable with who I am now. iMC: What’s the driving force that has propelled you to remain in the game this long? Amani: I’ve had to re-invent myself constantly to remain relevant. I’m a perfectionist and that can sometimes rub off on people the wrong way because I’m a all business when it comes to my career music is my core business. I’m never 100% sure so I live it all to God. iMC: Did you expect to win a MAMA award? Amani: I hoped! But when d-day arrived it came with nerves, so I just left it all in the hands of God. When they called my name I was just hanging out with my pal and I almost didn’t believe it myself, I was still in the costume I’d performed in and that’s how I accepted the award. iMC: How has winning an MTV MAMA award changed your life? Amani: Winning an MTV MAMA award has been exceptional. Because MTV is a brand that is recognized worldwide and this opens up a lot of opportunities and helps when booking gigs. But it’s challenging in that it has set the bar so high for Amani, expectations are now higher, my next releases have to top ‘Tonight’ that means I have to work much harder. iMC: What’s your most memorable collabo? Amani: I’ve enjoyed working with everyone but it has to be working on ‘Bad Boy’ with Nyash from Klepto. We were at the studio working on the song and somehow it just didn’t feel right, we were all blank so we took a break and after the break Nyash was behind the mic, the first words he said were ‘Najua unaipenda unaitaka pia...’ and that was it! iMC: There has been some controversy surrounding your relationship with Wahu? Amani: This industry can be very vicious and it’s especially not easy to be a female artist. Wahu and I are very good friends. Such talk is from people who are trying to create sensational news, my take is female artists are too few for us to beef with each other. Jua Cali once told me ‘Jua ikimulika haimuliki tu mtu moja inamulika kila mtu’. The industry should adapt that. There’s enough room for all of us. iMC: What is the worst thing you’ve heard said about you? Amani: A lot has definitely been said but it has to be about the “talk” surrounding my personal life and relationships. Just because I’m in showbiz doesn’t mean I’m ‘easy’. I have only ever had three boyfriends my entire life. It takes a lot for a guy to be my boyfriend. iMC: Do you think you’re misunderstood? Amani: Yes and no. Those who matter to me know me very well but people can sometimes be malicious. Not everything you hear is true. I’ve been labelled a bitch, but that’s just guys

way of putting down a hard working woman who knows what she wants and isn’t afraid to get it. I’ve been called ‘arrogant’ but I’m just a very shy and guarded person when it comes to letting other people in, it’s my defense mechanism to protect myself from being taken advantage of. iMC: What’s your take on the Kenyan music industry? Amani: It’s growing despite all the challenges. Unlike our Ugandan and Tanzanian counterparts Kenyan music still isn’t receiving the airtime that it deserves on TV and radio plus it’s harder for chics than it is for guys. iMC: Do you think Gospel Music is bigger than secular music? Amani: Yes. Gospel Music is bigger because they have more exposure. They receive airplay both on mainstream media and gospel TV and radio stations. They already have a strong network established. iMC: Which high school did you go to and what’s your fondest high school memory? Amani: I’m a proud alumnus of Ngandu girls. The Music and drama fests were just the ‘it’ thing for me in high school. iMC: Tell me about your first date? Amani: (Smiles) It was back in my hometown Thika, a new restaurant had just opened and my date took me there, he bought me roses. I was so shy and embarrassed that after my date left I went and bought a paper bag to carry them in. iMC: What do you do to relax? Amani: Sleep, sleep, sleep. I also love watching animation movies and I recommend you all watch ‘Flushed Away’. iMC: What advice would you give young galz when it comes to relationships? Amani: Don’t be in a hurry to grow up and also to become someone’s galfriend or wife. Focus on your goals and define yourself as an individual the rest will all fall in place. Guys will always be around especially if you’re a successful woman but they won’t be when you’re a failure. iMC: Advice to teeniez? Amani: It sounds cliché but don’t be afraid to dream and to follow those dreams! iMC: What does the future hold for Amani? Amani: God willing, big big things. I’ll release some new music that I’ve been working on very soon. For my long term future, settling down and

AMANI IN A NUTSHELL I LOVE: dancing I’m great at: Applying make-up, styling and cooking I dislike: rats I’d like to meet: John Legend, Cece Winans, Mariah Carey & Beyonce (who’ve both had very long careers & I’d love to know how they maintain their sanity.) I can’t live without: My i-Pod. I’m listening to Beyonce’s ‘I’m Sasha Fierce’ and Shakira’s She Wolf. I wish I could change: Nothing. Everything is the way it is for a reason. I’m most grateful for: My passion is my career and I get to share it with others. Plus I’m my own boss. My Christmas wish is: To travel and get to spend more time with my family. New Year’s Resolution: I don’t make any because I don’t keep them. Best Career Memory: Winning the MAMAs. I wish I could replay the moment my name was called over and over. Also winning a Chaguo award for Best collabo in a category where I wasn’t labelled as a female artist but just as an artist. One thing I’d love guys to know is: I’m very shy, sheepish and scared of rejection

3rd Annual Super 20 5. Juliani - Gospel’s Poster Boy Former Ukoo Fulani Mau Mau artist Juliani has risen through the ranks of stardom to become gospel’s poster boy. Famed for his witty yet philosophical rhymes and electrifying performances he has endeared himself to fellow artists, gospel audiences and secular audiences. He has however disputed being termed as a gospel artist and prefers to be called a socially conscience artist saying that his music can be related to by everyone who lives an everyday life. His performance style is absolutely riveting with his energy and presence completing his rhymes and powerful voice. With the hits such as ‘Biceps’, Mtaa Mentality’ and ‘Hela’, Juliani who is signed to Gatwich records successfully launched his album ‘Mtaa Mentality’ this year. He most recently had a UK tour with Sudanese star Emmanuel Jal and made a cameo on the 3 part MTV drama series ‘Shuga’.

4. Citizen TV - Tube King

Less than three years after its inception Citizen TV is definitely well on its way to becoming Kenya’s most preferred T.V station as it has the whole nation tuned in and glued to their screens. Up three slots this year, this Royal media affiliate has massive funding and that’s why anchors are all too willing to shift camps and join them. Citizen TV boasts an impressive line-up of entertaining local productions like Waridi, Tabasamu, Tahidi High, Fruit Salad, Mother-inLaw, Xtreme, TPF, Patikana, Papa Shirandula, Sakata and The Wedding show. Unlike most stations, Citizen has realized that most folks have already seen the so called ‘latest’ American series thanks to bootleg DVD stalls. They have therefore concentrated more on building the local production scene. Other stations should definitely take notes.

3. Facebook - Web Application If you’re not on Facebook then you’re not with it. Six slots up from last year, Facebook has proved to be the most popular internet interactive site not only with teeniez but the world over. Dubbed ‘Sura ya mbuku’, it has become somewhat of an obsession and perhaps one of the main reasons teeniez all over Kenya are always on the net constantly to share their thoughts, pics and videos, get to know the latest celeb 411, try to outdo each other in coming up with the wittiest status updates and getting as many pals as they can. Facebook is responsible for a lot of break-ups and hook ups as peeps are always on other people’s profiles snooping for some juicy mushene. It’s no wonder some 404s couldn’t do without it even during the K.C.S.E period.

2. Gospel Artists - Religious influencer Undoubtedly 2009 will go down in the annals of entertainment history as the year of Gospel Explosion. Gospel artists have earned a distinct place in the entertainment industry appealing to both gospel and secular audiences. MCSK (Music Copyright Society of Kenya) reported that Gospel artists rake in as much if not more income as secular artists and they also receive equal amount of airplay. Not too long ago, gospel music wasn’t considered ‘cool’ by most teeniez but artists such as Juliani, Eko Dydda, Daddy Owen and M.O.G have shattered this misconceptions by adopting ‘friendlier’ beats and electrifying performances to accompany the positive message in their lyrics. Gospel artists have heavily influenced the increase in numbers of teeniez countrywide attending church with mad psyche, teeniez don’t even mind fork out entrance fees to attend gospel gigs.

3rd Annual Super 20

1. Jua Cali - Genge Maestro Taking tops and up one slot to clinch the top spot a year later, is the genge maestro Jua Cali (Gova name Paul Nunda). Ngeli ya Genge Gospel according to Paul has managed to catapult and cement Jua Cali’s reign over the entertainment industry. True to his smash single ‘Bongo La Biashara’ this cat from Calif epitomizes the modern hustler. He has proven yet again to be one of the most hardworking artists in the local music industry with his unwavering dominance of the airwaves. From his early works ‘Ruka’ and ‘Mtu saba’ to monster singles like ‘Kwaheri’ and Kiasi his releases have elevated him to super stardom and earned him endorsement deals with various corporate including Orange which reportedly paid him a cool 10 milli. This 2008 MAMA nominee has been doing quite a lot of world trotting with shows from T.Z, Sweden to the United States and he ain’t about to stop anytime soon. The influence of his music on youth culture is undeniable and his performances always leave the audience wanting to bask in more of Jua’s sunshine. Looks like his magic is rubbing off on another Calif artist, Mejja who is well on his way to becoming Calif’s next big thing. This CHAT award winner has beaten the odds to be where he is now as he clearly reminisces in his recent single ‘Ni imbie’ featuring Enika. It’s all about his struggle to the top and how he overcame obstacles that held him back from making a niche in the entertainment scene. Even with the beef that Abbas (Kubaff) is trying to stir, Jua has still kept his down to earth persona in check and avoids confronting Doobiez on the matter. Clearly, this guy has his priorities straight and will continue to make it big in the industry.

Runway Catfights I recently had the opportunity of hiding in the iQru van trunk as they journeyed to Gathirimu Technical High School

That Heckler chic doesn’t know what she’s talking about when she says that Serare Prep Skool is in the bunduz becoz Gathirimu is the bunduz. The Sniper highly regrets hiding in the trunk (worst idea ever) because technically speaking the road to Gathii Gee is nonexistent! I checked into the hall and it became

apparent that Gathii Gee chics had settled on a whole different way of doing things and well the Sniper has to give them an A+ on that. Other talent performances like Jahmu’s dance qru and Gathii’s routine dances were squeezed

in like commercial breaks, which meant yours truly and the rest of the audience fell dumbstruck to the glamour galz on stage all day long and huba huba were they gorgeous. It’s no wonder ‘The Insyder

lights kept blacking out in the middle of performances and well the sound system was atrocious to say the least. This was made no easier by one chic (a commercial break) who got on stage and attempted to sing “No Air”. Her screeching damn near caused the Sniper to collapse from lack of air. As Maina Kageni would say, “Switi, Never Ever.” It was a blessing when

BMF, Walson and M.O.G who’d also made the epic journey finally took the stage for their “commercial break slot.” The Sniper truly believes that these guys were heaven sent, because miraculously the sound was banging and the lighting was great. After their performance it was time to crown Miss Gathii Gee. There seemed to be a lot of tension in the air

Crowning Miss Gathirimu Anabelle Njoki (304)

and after sniping around I discovered that there was a lot of cat fighting, face scratching, and design stealing happening behind the scenes more like ‘Gathirimu’s Next Top Model.’ Galz, galz, galz, the Sniper still thinks you’re all gorgeous. Then again I do like a good cat fight, just don’t play too dirty… ok Tania?

I’ll give these galz a straight ten for creativity as the designers did a fantastic job (whoever the real geniuses were) and the models looked absolutely saucy (hint hint Calabash Gal) making it pretty hard for the Sniper not to blow his cover in the shadows.

I’m Scared I’ll Get Pregnant Hi Big Siz, My boyfriend and I recently started having sex. My problem is he doesn’t like using a condom and I’m really scared that I’ll get pregnant. I really don’t know who to talk to about birth control, my friends suggested the E-pill. Please tell me what I should do? Emma Hi Emma, Choosing to engage in sex comes with responsibilities and one of these responsibilities is pregnancy. Unplanned pregnancies can be stressful and therefore both of you need to understand and discuss the various ways of preventing unwanted pregnancies

planning method. Therefore DO NOT use the E- pill on a daily basis or regularly. There are other Family Planning methods that you can adopt, these are 1. Injectables Contraceptives injection are done to prevent pregnancy. Pills they are swallowed once every day to prevent pregnancy. 2. Intrauterine Devices (IUD) is a small, flexible plastic frame. It is inserted into a woman’s uterus through her vagina. 3. Norplant Implants is a set of six small plastic capsules that are placed under the skin of a woman’s upper arm. 4. Condoms help

from entering the penis. It is important to get a family planning specialist who will tell you more about each method before starting on any. Remember abstinence it the only way of preventing yourself from pregnancy, HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). One luv, Big siz Hi Big Siz, I have a really embarrassing problem. People always make fun of me because of the way I dress. I know I don’t have the most trendy clothes but it’s not my fault, I tried talking to my mom about it but she told me off and said that I was being ungrateful. How can I make her

Emergency contraceptives pills are used for emergencies (where one is raped or a regular family planning has failed for example a condom has broken) and NOT as a regular family

Your mum might not be very supportive because she feels like she has done her level best. I know it’s hard on you but look at the bigger picture she’s made sure that you don’t lack a basic need: clothing. My advice is, if you want to try something different from what you have in your closet, talk to your mum about it so that she can have this in mind when she’s buying you new clothes. Eventually you’ll get rid of the clothes you don’t like. Remember to be polite and respectful when you share what you want with your mom. It’s only when you accept who you are that other people will accept you. Truly, Big Siz Hi Big Siz, I’m not sure how I feel about this guy. He really cares for me and likes me a lot. The only problem is that I don’t really know if I like him. Some days I miss him and wish I could talk to him, but other days I forget about him and say that I don’t like him. What is my problem? Why do I like him sometimes and some other times I don’t? Lili G.

Hi, I’d really love to know how long you’ve been seeing this guy. If you’ve only been dating a short time, then I think what you are feeling is perfectly healthy! Too many girls convince themselves that “it’s love” after one date. And if the guy doesn’t call them for a second date, they go completely over the edge and act as if their hearts have been broken. But if you’ve been dating him for a while and still can’t make up your mind, then there’s something deeper going on here. Maybe you liked him before he started liking you because he seemed aloof and mysterious. But now that you have him, he’s familiar and dull. If that’s the case, then you’re one of those girls who enjoy the chase more than the prize. You need the rush and excitement of falling for someone, but get bored when the relationship starts to settle down. Just be honest with yourself as you try to make a decision. Luv, Big Siz

CORPORATE CHIC

Nature’s Own of sorts. Simply put I go outdoors and record stories about life in the wild. I’ve just sealed a deal to have the first season of one of my documentaries called Coast Edition to run on K24. It’s more like ‘Big Cat Diary’ meets ‘Out and About’, because I don’t only focus on animals but also on vegetation too.

Having had a love for nature from when she was young Lisa Macharia grew up to be a fun loving conservationist. In her own words “I’m fortunate to have made a career out of my passion.” At only 25 Lisa already owns her own Production Company and is doing big things for herself.

Did you experience any challenges while embarking on this field? My biggest challenge was the huge lack of understanding; almost everyone was against my pursuing a course in wildlife. They had doubts about where it would lead. It was hard but I stuck to my decision.

Gova names: Lisa Macharia Job title: Producer/Director Slick Media Production How did your love for the wild start? It’s not exactly love for the wild but rather love for nature. Growing up I was always scolded by my parents for picking up stray cats and puppies. By the time I was in high school I already knew that I wanted to build my career around something to do with wildlife, I just didn’t know what exactly. Which high school were you in and what’s your high school fondest memory? I was in Tumutumu Girls High. It has to be the time that my pals and I sneaked out at night and stole a boiling cow’s head and ate it. The soup was very nice.

Lisa Macharia loves the great outdoors

Have you undergone any training in Production? I studied at KWS, a great experience because they were very accommodating and really appreciated the fact that a girl was actually interested in the great outdoors. So how did you end up in TV production? I was helping out on the shoot of a nature production at the Coast and the director Steve Capone realized that I had a knack for both the outdoors and production techniques. He decided to mentor me and I went through some technical tutoring from him.

You’ve got quite a lot on your plate, how do you manage? Planning and strategizing goes a long way you know. I also work with a company that deals with manufacturing and distributing sound systems to PSVs on the side. What are the skills needed in your field? The technical skills on nature and production techniques. Also lots of PR you have to know how to relate with your colleagues, clients and crew because you’ll always get as much as you give. You also need patience because you can’t force nature to do what it doesn’t want to do. Word of advice to teeniez? Listen to your heart and don’t let go of your dream just because people don’t agree with you

How did you start you own company? I really enjoyed production so I gambled on myself, took a business loan and the rest as they say is history. Steve Capone was a big help when I was setting up, especially with the hiring of crew and sourcing of equipment. Describe you work? I produce docu-dramas The perfect shot requires patience

GUY TALK

Should I Try My Luck? Hi Biggie, I really like this gal at school and I don’t know what to do to make her notice me. My best friend who’s considered cool also seems to like her. He can have any other girl in the school, why does he want the one girl I really like? Should I just give up or try my luck? Melvo My guy, It sucks that you and you’re friend seem to have fallen for the same gal but at the end of day it all comes down to whether the gal likes you or not. You don’t seem to feel that you can compete with your best friend, who’s referred to as a “cool jamaa”. Push on and communicate your feelings not only to her but also to your best friend because chics will always be there but good friends are hard to come by. If you’re friendship means a lot to both of you you’ll both just choose to stay friends with this gal besides I bet there are plenty of other nice gals out there for both of you to date. Good Luck, Biggie

Hi Biggie, Galz like hanging out with me and they always talk about how cute I am. This has resulted in my getting teased and being called gay at school. I’m not gay because I really like some galz. Are these guys just jealous of me or should I just stop hanging out with the galz? Denno Denno, Everyone is unique in their own way so if chics seem to like you and you enjoy their company then these guys need to chill out and respect the fact that it’s your personality. It’s great that you’re aware of your sexuality and

out with whomever you’re comfortable with because they are probably just jealous that it’s easier for you with the galz than it is for them. Always, Biggie Hi Biggie, I used to hang out with this gal and she wanted to have sex with me but I refused coz I don’t like her that way. Now she’s spreading lies about me and telling people the way I’m horrible at making out which isn’t even true coz I’ve never even touched her. People are always laughing behind my back and it’s made me really angry. What can I do? Edu

you were bright enough not to engage in premarital sex with someone you have no feelings for. You should talk to this chic find out why she’s doing this because chances are she felt bad when you rejected her and now wants to get even. Explain to her that the problem is not her and that you have taken a personal stand to wait till marriage. Who knows you can teach her how to respect herself more and maybe even be friends (you were friends once right?). Cheers, Biggie Sup Biggie! My gal wants me to give up my wristband which was a gift from my old best friend

“Tell her how you feel about her and more importantly respect her decision” know without a doubt that you’re not gay. Them saying you are won’t make you gay, question is do you believe in yourself enough to withstand their ridicule? I say be comfortable with yourself and hang

Dec

Edu, I can only imagine the situation that you’re in. What this chic is doing is not cool at all. Take heart my friend because you seem to have a good head on your shoulders because

2 0 0 9

who happens to be a chic and I really like it, but my gal thinks it’s tacky! I told her to take a chill pill because she also has a chain from her first boyfriend. Now she’s accusing me of being jealous. Please HELP!

Johnnie Johnnie, Whoa! The fact that she wants you to give away your wristband and yet she doesn’t want to address the fact that she still wears the necklace that her ex gave her is so not cool. I think the only reason she’s attacking you for wearing the wristband is because it’s from another chic. Now the thing you have to learn about relationships is that they require compromise. By both of you keeping this memorabilia from your past relationships you’re invoking feelings of insecurity in each and you may both feel that the other person may still have feelings for someone else; you for your old best friend and her for her ex-boyfriend. Here’s a cool idea why don’t you get each other gifts to replace the items you both have, this way you’ll have a wristband and she’ll have a necklace and you can create your own memories as both gifts will be from each other. Problem solved. Biggie

HECKLER

Reminiscing The Year That Was The Dec holz are finally here and I’m sure glad to be relieved from all that chem and algebra. Lord knows my pretty head needs to relax from all the school funkiez I’ve attended so I’ll be taking it easy at one of the coolest resorts around. Let’s look back at some of my school trotting adventures this year...

Back 2 skool Jan Most of you went back to your bunduz located skoolz with tongues wagging on how lucky I was to have Jua invite me to his album launch. Kwanza chics from Choxx couldn’t stop talking about it at their beat up stage when I passed by to say hi. They were camouflaging pretty well with all the mud around them as they scrambled for mats to take them to confinement. They had to snitch on my presence and dudez in tao rushed to the scene to check me out. What a way to start out the year!

Valentine madness To mark this overly exaggerated cupid holiday, I accepted the exclusive invite to grace Meru skool’s funkie. Expecting a top notch reception, I got more than I bargained for. Those dudez

Pitiful staring at WAPI

Choxx scrambling for matatus to ferry them back to confinement

definitely can’t handle the presence of a hottie like me on their turf. They got a bit too close for comfort trying to impress me especially one fresher who kept following me around with an improvised version of a “rose”. Lord knows I won’t be going back there anytime soon.

Hopeless B-ball ballers at Hope centre March was b-ball funkiez galore month. I attended quite a few but the most memorable one had to be the one at Hope

Center. The games were aiiight the dudez were aiiight but their vybe was hopeless! Some dudez from Austins tried to get their pathetic vybe on with me and it was just sad. They sure got skills in b-ball and balling but their darting skills are just whack. How do you expect to impress a chic when you keep talking about yourself?! I AM THE STAR! I do the talking…well most of it anyway. And to think those Austins blondes almost went berzerk on me coz they thought I was stealing their beaus…Paleeez.

When my pal Point Blank invited me to check out his protégés do their thing at B.C, I didn’t expect to rub shoulders with weirdoes. Talk about whackness! Some dudez kept following me around asking if they could do a graffiti portrait of me. As if I’d let some amateurs do an abstract portrait

of my classy face on some wall. Then there was this group of Ditchez guys who I suspect skived skool to check me out. Those guyz have clearly gone for stalking lessons coz I couldn’t keep them off my trail. When Octopizzo and his palz got on stage, they spotted me and poor cats couldn’t rap. They just stood there and stared at me for like five minutes until G-ronge came to the rescue. I know I’m all that but jeez, you don’t have to be so obvious about it.

Crème de la Crème funky I know there are lots of funkiez I should rant and rave about but I gotta get ready for my

Spa appointment. So I’ll wrap up with my personal favorite… Music Fests at the Coast baby! Peeps were super excited to hit the coastal town for the first time but you know me…been there done that. I was constantly cracking up coz they were totally clueless. Kottet chics just couldn’t get enough of the ferry rides, St.Gee chics were constantly on keroma shopping, Starch dudez couldn’t vybe me to save their lives, Ngara chics were eating up the sand and coz all eyes were on me, I basked in glory and fabulosity. Have a kick at your Christmas parties everyone!l.

SUPER CHIC

Gifted Gift me to try out as I’m tall and a freak for fashion shows…I never miss an episode of America’s Next Top Model.’’ says Gift. “I really didn’t expect to win or anything, I just wanted to have a fun experience and what do you know? I actually impressed the Judges! Hopefully next August I’ll be walking down the catwalk in Brazil.’ She adds.

Gift in full bomerian regalia

At seventeen, Gift Opar 304 from Boma oozes lots of confidence and self-assurance. She’s achieved what most of her peers can only dream of. She scooped Sh50,000, a modelling contract prize and she’s going to represent Kenya in an all expenses paid trip to Brazil in January 2010 where she will meet other participants from 50 other countries to compete for the Ford Supermodel of the world title and 5 contracts worth US$50,000US$250,000. This is

the same event that catapulted Kenyan born international model Ajuma Nasenyana into the limelight Gift says she’d always dreamt of trying her hand at modelling but never actually got down to it until she popped in at V-mark to audition for this year’s Ford Model Search.

When asked about the impact the win has had on her, “Well, at least I’ve got a title to my name!” She laughs. “It’s also opened my eyes to so many possibilities, other than that, not much. I’m still the same old Gift Opar. I haven’t suddenly become vain and I don’t intend to.” She says. Gift is a strong believer of humility and believes that in God’s eyes we are all equal. Gift is also the Head Girl at Boma a responsibility bestowed upon her by the admin in mutual agreement with her peers who gave her the nod because of her undeniable leadership skills, excellent communication skills

and crisis management skills. With an impressive academic record, this straight A student often sits pretty at the top of her class and is always willing to help out her classmates. Gift admits to having a knack for art, her other interests include design, interior décor and reading classical literature. Gift hopes to involve herself with work of humanitarian nature in future so as to give back to the society as much as possible. Gift’s gifted with it all, she’s super smart,

a leader, a go-getter and Boma’s best rep in all clubs there is to talk about. Her secret to balancing it all? She says it’s all down to managing one’s time well, believing in yourself and trusting in God. Gift also adds that as glamorous as the fashion industry might look, she wouldn’t want to pursue a full time modelling career. “I’ll do it for a while when I’m still young but my long term goal is a career in the sciences.” Good luck Gift, may this be the beginning of a fruitful, fabulous career!.
