T9 -THE PLAYA PREZIDENT
‘Romantic Myths Decoded’
Every playa knows that getting the gal is the easiest part; true labour is in keeping her. Aside from the emotional roller-coaster that you will have committed yourself to when ‘pairing’ chics also come with some ‘pretty romantic’ expectations borne from endless hours reading Mills & Boons romance novels or watching Mexican/Philippino soaps with corny names such as ‘Love is Timeless’. To usher in the New Year I’ll let you in on some of the ‘romantic myths’ that simply won’t work...

S0CCER Name: Eva Wanjiku Age: 17 yrs School: Quabbz
Name: Anthony Mbugua Age: 18 School: Easich
Eva ‘ciku’ is a fun and bubbly chic from Quabbz. She is a member of the school choir and has never missed the music fests since she was in 104. She also sings at her church and hopes to one day bless the mic as a career.
One of Easich High’s hype masters Anto loves football and is a player for the school football team. He hopes to not only play for the national team but also one of the top notch English Premier League teams. A soccer fanatic he’d love a chance to visit S.A and witness the world cup action live.
I’ve always loved singing, from nursery rhymes when I was a kid to church hymns, pop music…you name it. Music has and will always be a big part of my life and if I’m not listening to my I-pod, then I’m singing my heart out. I have BIG dreams and I want to make it in the industry so being in the school choir helps me nurture my talent. I have my priorities straight and won’t let them come crashing down coz of engaging in risky behavior like teenage sex. NIMECHILL! ”
“I’ve always loved watching football and playing it too. I’m a staunch follower of the English premier league and I hope to one day be part of it. I’ve so much to live for and I won’t let anything get between me and my goals especially pre-marital sex. For a dude my age, it’s not easy to be grounded as the pressure to ‘fit in’ is overwhelming but I will not give in. I don’t want the stress of dealing with unwanted pregnancies and STDs. NIMECHILL!

PAPA FOLOLO TAKES A STAND A man humbled by his success and serious about his music, Daddy Owen has not only continued to be a force in the Gospel music industry for promoting his work and the work of other artists, including Dunco and Allan Aaron but in a host of other areas as well. With three albums under his belt ‘Haijalishi’, ‘Son of Man’ and ‘System ya Kapungala’ , Daddy Owen’s commitment and willingness to explore and experiment with music and ability to make Gospel music that makes ‘the Gospel’ more appealing to those who may not have a religious affiliation has earned him immense popularity and recognition from fans and industry players alike. iMC: Describe yourself? Owen: I’m a spontaneous guy who lways aims to be the best that he can be. I love looking good and I love fashion. iMC: Where did you grow up? Owen: I was born in Nai but grew up in Kakamega. I came to Nai in 1999 after I had cleared school. I started doing some small biasharas including selling mtumba clothes at Mtindwa market. I later took a course in Travel Operations found my way into music and here I am. iMC: What does your nickname Papa Fololo mean? Owen: It means gentleman and it was a nickname given to me by a Congolese friend of mine. iMC: Most people may not know this but you’re partially blind on your
right eye? Owen: Yes. I wasn’t born that way. It was an injury I got after a being a victim of mob injustice. I used to live a life of crime and you could say that my forty days finally caught up with me. I’m lucky to be alive, it’s part of the reason why I gave my life to Christ. iMC: Why did you choose to get into Gospel Music? Owen: I got born again in 2003 and that was around the same time that I decided to embark on a career in music. So it seemed natural that my music should incorporate my faith and also aim to spread the word of God. iMC: ‘Haijalishi’, ‘Kapungala’ do all your albums have tracks with the same title as the album name? Owen: (Smiles) It may seem so but I don’t always plan it that way. The song
‘System ya Kapungala’ was meant to be called ‘Randa Randa’, but when guys heard me say the name ‘System ya Kapungala’ on the track it jazzed them and it just kinda stuck. So I also decided to change the name of the track to ‘System ya Kapungala’. iMC: Where did you get the idea for the style ‘Kapungala’ ? Owen: My i-Pod has all sorts of music R&B, Lingala, zuq, acoustic, benga, genge, kapuka...you name it and this really helps my creativity. Kapungala is a fusion of Kapuka and Lingala. The idea appealed to me because I grew up listening to lingala and it’s a style that most Kenyans recognize. Kapuka is a style loved by young people. iMC: Why the fusion of Kapuka and Lingala to Kapungala? Owen: I didn’t want to do something
American because guys would probably go ‘that’s a knock-off’ of so and so. African music has so much richness to it, if it’s upbeat it’s danceable, if it’s slow there’s emotion to it and it’s the kind of music that can cross over and appeal to anyone. ‘System ya Kapungala’ and ‘Kiriro’ are an example of this, System ya Kapungala is danceable and although most of Kiriro is in kyuk it’s still manna for the soul for anyone who listens to it. iMC: Do you speak French? Owen: (Laughs) No. I just know the everyday ‘Bonjour’ and ‘omle du fromage’ that I pick up from songs and friends. Like ‘coupe de kale’ is a dance style from Ivory Coast that I use in a
song called ‘Tobina’. iMC: Do you write your own lyrics? Owen: Yes. I also direct my music videos and help out other artists where I can. iMC: Did you expect to win the 2009 Groove Awards Male Artist of the year award? Owen: Not really but I thank God for that honour. I’ve won previous Groove awards for ‘Video of the Year’, Album of The Year 2005 for ‘Haijalishi’ but this is the first award that I have ever collected in person. iMC: Any particular reason? Owen: As a Gospel artist you’re perceived to be a man of God but before that you’re a man first. If not
careful the man part can bring you down. I didn’t feel like I was deserving enough then so I waited until I was ready to pick the award without pride. iMC: Which high school were you in and what’s your fondest high school memory? Owen: I’m a proud alumnus of Chebuyusi High School in Yala. My fondest memory is winning the Kiwi Paint & Win compe. I won so much stuff, a TV set, accomodation at a hotel and fully paid school fees for a whole academic year. iMC: Do you still draw and paint? Owen: Not as much as I’d love to presently but I used to do artwork for mats. It’s a talent that runs in the family my bro Rufftone is also very good at it and also won a painting compe while in school. iMC: Aside from music what’s your side hustle? Owen: I’m a man of many trades but right now my music career is my main hustle. Aside from that, I have a clothing line, produce music and videos, Rufftone and I have our own studio. I also do talent management for other artists to help them kickstart their careers. Some of them include Dunco, Allan Aaron, M.O.G and Ngashville. iMC: You’ve been in the Gospel music industry for over six years describe your career? Owen: It’s been the beginning of many good things to come. Initially it was hard to break through and to have my music played. I’ve worked very hard to be where I am and I’m honoured when other industry players recognize this and also when I set standards for other artists. iMC: Who have you enjoyed working with the most? Owen: Dunco because he’s very creative, Allan Aaron he’s very versatile, Kerah full of surprises and my bro Rufftone, he’s a living legend with a Midas touch. iMC: How would you describe your relationship with your brother Rufftone? Owen: We’re very tight. I have my own crib but I’m at his place most of the time plus he has really been a
great role model for me. iMC: Has being Rufftone’s brother made it easier for your music career? Owen: Yes it has. But a common misconception is that the Gospel music industry is easier than the secular one. This is not true because our lyrics are limited and we have to watch how we behave because we have to be role models. iMC: Let’s talk about your ‘look’; has your mo-hawk caused any controversy? Owen: Yes it has, but it’s part of my personality. It doesn’t change my faith in any manner. I aim for my music to reach young people and to help them make a positive lifestyle change and the best way to do this is to present an image that they can associate with. iMC: Do you think Gospel artists are becoming too secular? Owen: This issue is a double edged sword. Because most Gospel artists will use secular riddims, dress in a certain style to appeal to their target audience so as to win people over to God. Some do this to avoid spending time and energy on developing their own niche because the audience will relate with the existing niche. iMC: Do you think it’s right that they are using secular riddims? Owen: It’s not illegal. However this trend of borrowing tunes won’t last because at the end of the day as a ‘Gospel artist’ you are a shepherd of men and when you call upon them your voice must be distinct, it’s therefore important to develop your own style. iMC: As a Gospel Artist, who has to live in the “worldly world that is showbiz, how do you balance
that with your duties of delivering spiritual gospel through music? Owen: You know, it’s work. Sometimes I succeed and sometimes I don’t. But, God in his glory reminds me of his love and that I am able to keep striving, to keep going and to pick myself up. iMC: What advice would you give to someone who wants to become a Gospel artist? Owen: The microphone is a very powerful thing and it’s very important that you realize it comes with the responsibility to say something significant. You have to be in it for the vision and mission because if you’re not it’s only a matter of time before you’ll be discovered to be a wolf in sheep’s clothing. iMC: What are your future plans? Owen: God willing, I’ll drop my next album next year and also go international. I’m also going to be involved in some ‘environmental campaigns. We shot the ‘Kiriro’ video at Lake Elementaita most guys think it’s a desert but it’s a dried up lake. That just goes to show you how serious the problem is. I might even rock a green mo-hawk in the spirit of this (Laughs). iMC: What’s your New Year’s Resolution? Owen: To eat life with a big spoon, enjoy my youth and to take my music to a more global level. iMC: Any advice to teeniez? Owen: Whatever you do today is a reflection of your future tomorrow; school is not for your parents but for you. Never look down on anyone because in this life you never know how and when you’re paths will cross again.
DADDY OWEN IN A NUTSHELL I love: Football. I’m a huge Real Madrid fan I hate: Hypocrisy and incompetency I can’t live without: My i-Phone and i-Pod I’m terrible at: Keeping time and helping my younger bros and sisters out with their homework I’m great at: Cooking, drawing and painting Favourite dish: Ugali, chicken and fish fingers I wish I could change: The moments that I’ve fallen into temptations but then again nobody is perfect. Most embarrassing moment: I forgot my lines, so we had to start all over again and it was during a live recording. My role models are: Different influences, I believe that you can learn something from everyone. Obama, Jua Cali to your small bro. Best career moment: Winning ‘Artist of the Year’ at the 2009 Groove Awards Most grateful to: God for blessing me, my bro Rufftone, Mr.Googz & Vinnie Banton for believing in me and encouraging me right from the start.
EKO DYDDA’S REASON YA KUSMILE
Eko Dydda may be the new kid on the block but his hit single collabo ‘Niko na Reason’ feat. Holy Dave has quickly established him as one of Gospel Music’s brightest stars. His unique style ‘stammer & swagger’ and witty lyrics are a testimony to the immense talent that he possesses. A proud alumnus of Easich (Eastleigh High), this is one artist who is surely here to stay. iMC: Is it true that you’ve officially changed your gova names to Eko Dydda? Eko: Yes. It’s not really a big change because my mom used to call me Eko when I was growing up and my pals would call me Dydda or Daddy. iMC: Why did you change your names? Eko: I did it because I believe there’s a lot of tribalism in our country. The name Eko Dydda has no tribal affiliation it’s just a name and could belong to anyone. I believe it’s a step towards killing tribalism in this country. In future I’ll also give my kids names without any tribal affiliations. iMC: How do you feel to have received so many nominations in the first round of the 8th Annual Chaguo La Teeniez Awards? Eko: It’s very humbling especially since this is my first release and it was great working with Holy Dave. I feel very blessed and I’m just glad that guys loved the song that much; I thank our fans for giving me that honour. iMC: ‘Niko na Reason’ has managed to stay on top of the charts for a while now; do you feel pressured that expectations on your next release are now higher?
Eko: Yes the pressure is there but at the end of the day I have to make music that is unique to me that’s why I developed ‘stammer and swagger’ as my own style. I’ve already worked on my next release single, no collabo on this one, just me. It’s titled ‘Me & My House’. To represent my resolve not to turn back now that I’ve given my life to Christ. iMC: Would you describe your music career as an overnight success story? Eko: (Smiles) Yes and no. I had to really hustle to get to a point where guys would give me an opportunity to perform. My musical journey started in 2004 when I was still in high school but my first real break came when Holy Dave convinced me to perform at ‘Wapi Spiritual Minded’, there was a black out when I was performing, luckily the guys who were in front and got a chance to hear me liked it and when the lights came back I was asked to perform again. iMC: How did you hook up with Holy Dave for ‘Nikona na Reason’? Eko: He mentioned doing a collabo together as a joke and I was like why not. So I called him up and he accepted, he did

a verse, I did a verse and the chorus and ‘Niko na Reason’ was born, we recorded it in early 2009. iMC: Are the lyrics in ‘Niko na Reason’ based on your own real life experience? Eko: Yes. I have so much to be grateful for, we all do. Up until 2002 my family and I lived from hand to mouth. My dad was a carpenter and my mom used to sell vegetables at Gikomba but what they earned was not enough to sustain my siblings and so when I cleared high skool I started working at a mjengo and also started selling ‘mchele dondo’ to make ends meet and guys would call it ‘dondo za Dydda’. iMC: When did you get saved and why did you choose Gospel music? Eko: I’ve been saved since I was in class 4, I come from a strong Christian background, my parents made sure we went to church every Sunday and that really strengthened my faith. I’ve always had a passion for music, so Gospel music seemed like a natural path for me. iMC: Aside from music what else are you good at? Eko: Football, I used to play back in high school but had to quit to concentrate on my studies. iMC: What’s your most embarrassing moment? Eko: I was performing on stage and when I was doing the stagger, my foot went through the wood on the stage floor and I fell over but guys thought it was part of the performance coz I continued like nothing happened. iMC: What advice would you give to teeniez who look up to you? Eko: Think positively and speak positively.

GAL talk
Should I Tell My Mom? Hi Big Siz, During the holidays I saw my dad with another woman. He knows I know and now he’s always buying me gifts. I think it’s so that I don’t tell my mom. I’m really scared if the truth comes out and my mom knows that I knew she’ll hate me. Mo’ Hi Mo’ Seeing your dad with another woman doesn’t necessarily mean that there is something going on between them that is unless you saw them in a compromising situation. You should first of all share your concerns with your dad because your burden could be lightened after talking to him. Be respectful because
relationship with your dad and also how will it affect your family? Will you be able to deal with the aftermath of the decision? If you feel confident with your responses to all these questions then you can go ahead and make an informed decision. Remember you are not obligated to tell your mom what you see your dad doing; it is their responsibility to be faithful and true to each other. Big Siz Hi Big Siz, I know people always think that it’s cool to have young parents but it’s not. My mom can sometimes dress in a manner that is not mom-like at all and this really embarrasses me. Why can’t she be like all the other moms?
that her dressing can sometimes make you feel uncomfortable? Remember to be polite, respectful and sensitive to her feelings. You can start by dropping subtle hints like helping her choose what to wear and it could be a fun way to strengthen your relationship. Remember change is gradual. So give your mom time. Big Siz
Hi Big Siz, I’m in a bit of a fix. My ex’s best friend and I became really tight over the holidays and we both have feelings for each other. Should we pursue this because it feels really right? Lulu . Little Sis, Friendships can sometimes develop into a relationship

it’s easy to get your feelings confused however there is a difference. 1. Friendship is deep and relationships are intimate. 2.A primary element in any relationship is the physical element. Friendship has its boundaries defined and no matter how close you are with your friend, there are limitations to physical intimacy. 3. Friendship may last for a life time as do some relationships but the time individuals spend with each other in a relationship is usually higher than in friendships. If you are sure that you want to be in a relationship then you can go ahead. Nevertheless there are some things you need to consider before getting into any relationship: a. Do I understand what it means to be in a relationship? b. Do I know the responsibilities that come with being in a relationship? c. Am I ready for the responsibilities? Take your time to think about it and then make an informed decision. Hi Big Siz, I’m now in 404 and I have started panicking.
Everyone seems to have such high expectations of me, I’m scared I’ll disappoint them and become a failure? Please help me; I really don’t want to let them down. Jacky Hi Small Siz, It can be a bit daunting when everyone expects great things from you and it’s normal to feel pressured. Look at it this way; it shows the amount of confidence and pride that they have in you. The plus side is you have nine whole months to work smart towards achieving these goals and dreams. If you think negatively about yourself even your effort will be negative therefore it is important to have the power of positive thinking. Don’t look at yourself as a failure but as a star. A golden rule is to accept who you are and also your individual capabilities. Don’t engage your mind with the expectations of other people but what you want to achieve and can achieve. Remember set achievable goals, be focused, be confident and do your level best. All the best. Big Siz

Amazing Grace When every force around you is hell bent on making you break the rules, it’s easy to give in to the pressure but Grace Wanjiru (404) from St John High in Pumwani is determined to make
something of herself. Raised in Easich Grace admits that it’s not an easy hood to live in because there are so many temptations. “Creepy guys have tried to coerce me into engaging in ‘gross’ stuff, some ‘pals’ once tricked me into attending a party and I found myself in the midst of an explicit crusade and those are just a few things in a long list of very trying moments.” She’s made it through all that and says that she
knows there are more trying moments to come. Unfortunately some of her friends haven’t been as wise; they gave in to the peer pressure and are now living with the dire consequences.
Jan
Grace says she feels sorry for them because it’s not easy to remain grounded in a neighbourhood where fitting in is easier than the alternative. How does she manage to keep it together? Grace attributes this to her strong Christian faith. She confesses that when she was still in 104, she wasn’t as keen on religion and worship but after attending a couple of C.U meetings that changed and she’s never looked back since. She’s been so active in the club’s activities that she was made chairlady. As a C.U leader, Grace is expected to not only be morally upright but a voice of reason within the school. Grace is also part of the Girl Scout movement in her school. She’s passionate about the environment. Last year, she organized a tree planting day in her school and even got invited to Quabbz to do the same. Grace and her pals also organized a clean-up project in their hood and are now

planning to make it an annual thing. “I want to serve others in the best way that I can,” says Grace, “being a member of these two clubs ensures that I do just that.” She’s been able to convince some of her school mates to join C.U and ‘The Girl Scouts Movement’. She’s proud that it has made a difference in their lifestyles as it’s helped in building their characters and they’ve become more responsible and morally conscious. She says that it hasn’t been easy but she won’t
give up on helping her school mates transform. She also loves dancing and has her own dance group which performs at various C.U events in schools. She’s also a member of her school’s music and drama clubs. Last year St. John’s drama club went all the way to the natioz in Kisumu a fete that she’s very proud of. Grace is determined to make a difference in her community and she’s determined to not let anything get in her way.
