Editor’s Letter

Welcome to the second half of the year, aka SPA+CLINIC’s 25th anniversary season! It’s hard to believe that our humble publication has been around for a quarter of a century, but it’s true! The change this industry has seen over the past 25 years is huge, and with it, this magazine has evolved. We’ll have lots of fun throwback content in our November issue you can look forward to, but for now, Dr Michael Zacharia is taking a look back at his own career and the cosmetic surgery industry over the past two decades on page 68.

An important aspect of the aesthetics industry that pretty much didn’t exist 25 years ago is device technology. Using machines to rejuvenate, tighten, or laser off skin has become the norm and the gold standard for many therapists and doctors thanks to companies like Alma, who are gracing our cover this month featuring Dr Edwina Morgan and her Alma Hybrid laser. Always at the forefront of technological advances, Alma has become Dr Morgan’s go-to for her equipment. On page 48, she tells us why.

We’re also looking at the new wave of highly exclusive, but social wellness clubs that are taking the world by storm; leading the way in Australia is members-only club

also offer practical advice for medical practitioners – did you know that there is a very specific way to prescribe off-label treatments in order to stay compliant?

Dr Giulia d’Anna explains the steps involved on page 102.

On September 3, we’ll host an exclusive 25th Anniversary party in Sydney to thank our most loyal partners and readers, so keep an eye out on our socials for all the fun! Tried+Tested

The latest and greatest in the aesthetics industry, tested by the SPA+CLINIC team.

Kym Cowper, Partnerships Manager tried:

Candela RF Matrix Profound

Recently I had my first treatment with Candela’s RF Matrix Profound. Following Candela’s recommended protocol of three sessions, I can attest to the device’s efficacy and the exceptional support provided by their clinical team, particularly Marguerite, their outstanding clinical trainer. The Matrix Profound RF device itself stands out for its precision, especially in treating areas close to the orbital region. The treatment process was seamless and handled with the utmost professionalism. Marguerite explained the areas she would be targeting while applying the numbing cream before the procedure, which made the experience entirely tolerable for me. This aspect is crucial for patient comfort and a significant factor to consider if you want to target those spicy areas such as the periorbital and philtrum, which was essential for my treatment. The comfort level during the treatment exceeded my expectations, and I am optimistic about the results as I continue with the recommended sessions. For practitioners looking to enhance their nonsurgical skin rejuvenation offerings, Candela’s RF Matrix Profound is a standout choice. It combines patient comfort, safety, and impressive outcomes, making it a worthwhile investment for any clinic dedicated to providing top-tier aesthetic treatments. candelamedical.com

Taneesa Williamson, Online Editor tried: Endymed Intensif

Whilst there are many Radio-Frequency Microneedling (RFMN) devices on the aesthetic market, Endymed has a versatile platform to host both RF and RFMN attachments on the one device. Through an in-depth consultation and assessment of my skin (with a concern of some mild acne and acne scarring), my clinician at Melbourne-based Brains Aesthetics entered in the parameters for the Endymed Intensif and set up the device (which was a single-use, non-insulated gold plated tip applicator in sterile packaging) whilst my topical numbing agent was numbing my skin. A single pass over the full face was performed between 0.5mm to 1.5mm depth, which with the numbing and my moderate pain tolerance felt between a 4/10 to a 6/10, with the sensation felt more around bony areas such as the forehead and cheekbones.

Post treatment I did feel quite some heat and noticed slight oedema in the areas treated, in which the Velez Intense Hydration Face Mask was then applied to my skin and greatly reduced these sensations by bringing the surface temperature of the skin down to approximately four degrees. I noticed mild dryness and micro crusting visible on the skin for up to three days post treatment, with a radiant glow to my skin nearly a week later. My acne did decrease, and with subsequent treatments I would expect to see a decrease in scar visibility too. I liked the easy-to-navigate interface yet the flexibility to increase or decrease the intensity of my treatment at the hands of the clinician. Whilst I did feel this treatment, I would look forward to having further sessions. hightechmedical.com.au

Kym Cowper, Partnerships Manager tried:

Aerolase Erbium and Neo

Having experienced the Aerolase Erbium laser treatment firsthand, I can honestly say it is virtually pain-free, which is remarkable for a CO2 laser. There is, however, a loud rubber band flicking sound that becomes quite therapeutic after the initial shock of the volume of it. Overall I only experienced about four days of downtime, but have to admit I adore the tight feeling of my skin during this period. Soon after, the usual peeling and shedding was intense but it made me extremely happy to see the new fresh baby skin underneath. Now, at week four post-treatment, my skin tone is noticeably brighter, firmer and rejuvenated. My treatment was supported by the Neo Aerolase, a non-ablative partner laser used before my Aerolase Erbium session and again at my four-week follow-up. This combination has proven highly effective, with significant pigment reduction on my forehead. Dr Cosima, who has been overseeing my progress, is extremely pleased with the results. Given the years of sun damage from my youth, she recommends another treatment in a few months to further enhance the outcomes. One big advantage of the Aerolase compared to other lasers is that it’s lightweight and portable so for a physician that has numerous practices in different locations, it’s easily transported. Phil from Beauty Technology shared with me that incorporating the Aerolase Erbium and Neo lasers into your practice can enhance a clinic’s service offerings while optimising operational efficiency. Their combined effectiveness in treating pigment issues, along with the convenience of portability and reduced costs, makes them a valuable addition for any clinic committed to providing top-tier facial rejuvenation treatments. beautytechnology.com.au

Number of rooms: 5

Number of staff: 10

Interior Inspiration:

TSOPHISTICATED, TRANQUIL, SERENE

here are certain suburbs in Sydney that are known for their high end Plastic Surgery Clinics and medispas, such as Double Bay, or the CBD. In recent months, a new aesthetic hub has emerged in Western Sydney, with an increasing number of reputable names in the industry setting up shop there. Bella Vista is located 33 km north-west of the Sydney CBD, and gained a stunning new aesthetic clinic last year: La Belle Cosmetics.

“Despite the area’s growing reputation in the medical field, there was a noticeable lack of non-surgical cosmetic clinics. We recognised an opportunity to fill this gap and bring these services closer to the local community, which is rapidly expanding,” says co-owner Matt Dona.

La Belle offers advanced skin and cosmetic treatments using the latest technology to address a range of skin concerns. “What really sets us apart is our commitment to personalised care,” says Matt. “Our highly trained practitioners create tailored treatment plans that focus on each client’s unique goals, ensuring the best possible results. We pride ourselves on providing honest advice and a holistic approach, always putting our clients first to help them feel confident and rejuvenated.

Planning the interior of the clinic was a long process and took almost two years as the team wanted to create a clinic that felt different to others and that exceeded patients’ expectations. To achieve this, they collaborated with Alicia Xiberras Interiors. “Alicia truly understood our vision and brief. She was able to translate our ideas into a design that went beyond anything I had imagined. Her expertise in blending luxury, comfort, and functionality was evident in every aspect of the clinic’s design,” says Matt.

From the elegant hardwood floors to the intricate detailing on the walls and the opulent marble finishes, every element was carefully chosen to create a sophisticated and welcoming atmosphere. The result is a space that not only reflects the brand’s commitment to excellence but also provides a serene and inviting environment for their clients.

When asked about his favourite room in the clinic, Matt has a clear answer: “My favourite room in the clinic is the consultation room. This is where every client’s journey begins and where we create our bespoke treatment plans. It’s a space designed for comfort and trust, where clients come to us for expert advice and to discuss their concerns. Here, we take the time to truly listen, ensuring they feel heard and understood. The calm and welcoming atmosphere allows for open, honest conversations, making it easier to tailor our treatments to their specific needs and aesthetic goals. It’s in this room that we build the foundation for the personalised care that sets La Belle apart, leaving clients confident that they are in good hands.”

As most builds, this one didn’t come without its challenges, mainly due to delays in obtaining building materials because of the pandemic, but instead of seeing it as a setback, Matt says they used the extra time to meticulously refine their design and ensure that every element of the clinic met their high standards. “By the time we opened to the public, we had not only overcome the material delays but also enhanced our readiness to deliver an exceptional, personalised experience for each client. The challenges we faced ultimately strengthened our commitment to excellence and helped us create a clinic that truly stands out.” What a silver lining.

Overheard At NSS

Pieces of wisdom we overheard at this year’s Non-Surgical Symposium that are too good to keep to ourselves…

“Learning does not come from gossip, drama, or vilification. It comes from learning what we can do better.”

– Anita East

“We don’t have to have the answer to everything, but we have a responsibility to our patients.”

– Dr Giulia D’Anna

“Needling works, but with Insulin it works better.”

“I don’t actually have a beauty clinic, it’s a confidence clinic.”

– Dr Shauna Watts

“The more information you give a patient before a procedure, the more it’s like you’re ‘vaccinating’ them – they have fewer doubts.”

– Dr Ligia Colluci

“The consultation is about you, too! We need to do some soul searching and know what our blind spots are.”

– Dr Liz Dawes-Higgs

The Wellness Event Of The Year

Kris, what have the past 2-3 years been like since you introduced the Spa &Wellness Awards and now, also the Wellness Summit?

The Awards & Summit have taken on a life of their own. To the point where we have gained global recognition, and those who win a Spa & Wellness Award, have doors opening abroad, which is brilliant, and part of the reason we started the awards in the first place, to give great businesses in our region a platform to stand tall on!

The first year was so successful, we decided we needed to add a larger event around the Awards, again, particularly for those in Wellness, there was no such event. So, enter The Wellness Summit.

The feedback and response to both the Awards & Summit has been overwhelmingly positive, which is why we are having a two-day Summit this year and have opened more categories for the awards (especially in longevity & wellness).

How would you describe the wellness industry in Australia?

I’d say it is evolving at a rapid rate. This is driven not just by the pandemic where people had the opportunity to dabble in wellness, but also through losing faith in our health system. People are now investing in their health and longevity.

For someone who has worked in this industry, especially preventative health, for over 30 years, I feel ‘FINALLY!’ people get it! Despite the uncertainty with the economy, spend on wellness is up, especially in the areas of bathing, fitness, recovery/contrast therapy, longevity and anti-ageing.

There is no question that wellness, as a concept, as a lifestyle priority, and consumer value, is a big winner from the pandemic. Especially for Gen Z and Millennials who view their health as a financial priority, and are investing significant portions of their income on it, e.g. by seeking out aesthetic treatments and opting to go to a communal bathhouse as a social gathering over drinking at a bar!

Just look at the number of wellness & longevity centres, bathhouse and medispas opening, or in the pipeline to open. Between Saint Haven and Total Fusion, there’s 15 right there! Certainly what I’m seeing from consumers through Spa & Wellness, is there is a significant increase in people seeking out spa, wellness and result driven therapies. Our audience has grown 300% in 6 months! A true sign of the times.

What can people expect at this year’s Wellness Summit and Awards and who should attend?

This Year’s Summit has a focus on innovation and we have some incredible speakers. We also have some experts in AI and Financial gurus helping businesses weather the ‘cost of living’ storm and still grow a business. There’s also an underlying theme of integration, integrating modern tech with ancient modalities.

We speak to KRIS ABBEY, the organiser behind this year’s Wellness Summit & Awards taking place in Byron Bay on October 20 - 21.

And as always, we have a lot of wonderful immersions people can enjoy so they can experience various wellness treatments and try new, innovative products. Every delegate will have a Technogym Wellness Check to ascertain their biological age (includes cognitive age as well). You’ll also be given a lifestyle program based on your results to improve your overall wellbeing. Anyone who is in the business of Spa, Wellness, Aesthetics, enhancing people’s lives in some way, should attend. Even for their own health and wellbeing, they will gain a lot!

What area of the wellness industry are you currently excited about and why?

I’ve always had a huge interest in longevity. Looking and feeling great, epigenetics, biohacking (utilising ancient and modern therapies) and nutrigenomics have been of great interest for decades. I love that these words are no longer obscure and people are understanding that they can really shape the way they age.

I’m also excited by the integration of modern science and technology with ancient treatment modalities. It’s no longer one or the other, it’s taking the best of both! For example, Cryo therapy has been around for centuries, and now with modern science it can be integrated into a facial, or gym session.

I mean, seriously, look at what Saint Haven are doing, or Integrative Retreats like RAKxa. At RAKxa you can have aesthetic treatments, cancer treatments or VSEL therapy, while doing an Ayurvedic sleep program (for example).

What are you hoping to achieve with the Wellness Summit and Awards?

The ultimate goal, and the reason we started this was to not only celebrate the best of the best, but also bring the industry together to connect and collaborate.

We want to keep elevating, but also have an event where we can learn about industry trends, where there’s opportunity and how can we work together as an industry to build and grow.

Success of First Round Leads to Waitlist Demand for Growth Accelerator Program

Industry-first program helping clinics fill appointments and sustainably scale, representing a significant step forward for aesthetics.

Once again Fresh Clinics is revolutionising the cosmetic industry with the launch of the industry’s first Growth Accelerator Program. The three-month intensive course is designed to help cosmetic nurses build new commercial, leadership, and marketing capabilities to achieve transformative growth.

The program – a blend of webinars, workshops, clinical training, and a dedicated offsite strategy day – is delivered by renowned entrepreneurs in and outside the aesthetics industry. Participants will undergo intensive training that enables the acquisition of new skills and insights to help them push the boundaries of their clinics and develop as leaders.

What differentiates this latest initiative

from other business growth courses, is its targeted focus on building critical skills most clinicians never learn when transitioning to business owners. This includes strategic road mapping, commercial analysis, advanced consultation training, establishing highperforming teams, and embedding scalable management systems – just to name a few. The course culminates in a full-day strategy offsite - showcasing an educational yet enjoyable way to network and connect with like-minded individuals.

“Growth Accelerators are not a new concept. We have seen them applied successfully in the tech industry, with companies like Airbnb going through them. We have taken the best elements from other sectors and adapted them to the aesthetics

industry to build something we feel will truly move the dial for our members” – Rob Price, CCO of Fresh Clinics

The cohort will start in August and Fresh has already built a waitlist of members excited to join the next round. This response highlights the significant demand for such a transformative program in the cosmetic industry.

About Fresh:

Fresh Clinics is a leading med-tech company for the aesthetics industry, offering compliance, training, smart clinic management software, and community support. Fresh Clinics enhances operational efficiency and regulatory compliance, ensuring high standards of care and empowering cosmetic nurses, doctors, and clinics to start, grow, and thrive. Compliant Ways To Communicate With Your Patients

How adopting a patient-centred approach to communication can help drive your business, according to marketing expert CHLOE MCGRATH

It’s no secret that the most recent changes to how we advertise cosmetic medical treatments under the TGA regulations, specifically those which utilise prescription-only drugs, has led to confusion and a lack of transparency for patients and consumers.

In recent years and months, concerns have been raised about the advertising and marketing practices of the aesthetics industry. Specifically, there has been criticism of the way in which clinics and practitioners promote their services and products, which has led to The Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) to respond to these concerns by implementing changes to their advertising regulations, which aim to improve consumer safety.

These recent changes have left some practitioners feeling uncertain about how to communicate with their audiences. However, this new regulatory environment has also presented an opportunity for practitioners to re-evaluate and improve the way they communicate with patients and consumers.

Rather than relying on before-and-after photos, testimonials, and other forms of social proof, practitioners can now focus on educating patients about their concerns rather than the treatment options available to them.

Here are some of our tips on how you can maximise your impact while minimising the risk of non-compliance:

1. Explain to your audience what the changes are and why the noticeable difference in your language, lack of transparent pricing and visual results are not your doing, by choice. We advise not to be political in these types of posts and keep your opinions for or against the changes away from a public forum like this.

2. Shift your focus from selling treatments, to educating patients about the concerns and issues they may be experiencing. It is important for practitioners to help patients to identify their concerns, whether it be wrinkles, volume loss, or other aesthetic issues, so that they can be inspired to take action and book an appointment.

3. Offer complimentary consultations and clearly explain that any holding deposit goes towards treatment if the patient is deemed suitable for treatment.

4. Phone conversations are unlikely to be considered advertising, as per the TGA’s Frequently Asked Questions. This has been one of the most unfortunate misunderstandings of these changes by practitioners. The TGA has said “Solicited advice is less likely to meet the legislative definition of ‘advertise’ than indiscriminately disseminated information.” While it’s not recommended to perform a consultation over the phone, discussing ‘from’ pricing during a

call is not against TGA regulations. This is crucial to ensuring that patients can freely enquire without needing to take time out of their lives to find out how much a treatment will cost them.

5. Your reception team needs to be well-trained and confident in converting enquiries into in-person consultations. This has always been important, but now more than ever.

6. Expand your treatment menu into other areas such as cosmeceutical skin boosters, non-S4 injectables, PDO threads and skin treatments. Allow yourself more treatments to discuss and promote online that will catch the attention of consumers. Once the patient has crossed the threshold of your consultation room, you are free to discuss whatever treatment is best for themincluding Schedule 4 drugs.

7. Harness your experience, your brand ethos and what makes you unique as a medical practitioner. Your mission statement is now more important than ever, if you can’t use testimonials or results to help patients decide that you are the injector for them.

Practitioners can also differentiate themselves by emphasising their unique expertise and experience. Patients are more likely to trust practitioners who are recognised as leaders in their field, and who can provide evidence-based information and guidance. By demonstrating their qualifications and experience, practitioners can build their reputation and position themselves as trusted advisors for their patients.

Ultimately, the changes to the TGA advertising regulations are a step in the right direction towards improving patient safety and promoting a more ethical and transparent approach to marketing and advertising. However, it is important for clinics and practitioners to take an active role in promoting education, transparency, and patient empowerment, and to shift their focus from selling treatments to helping patients identify and address their unique aesthetic concerns. By doing so, they can build trust and confidence among their patients and help to ensure a safe and ethical future for the aesthetics industry.

While the recent changes to the TGA advertising regulations have posed some challenges for the aesthetics industry, they also present an opportunity for practitioners to improve the way they communicate with patients and consumers. By adopting a patient-centred approach, emphasising their expertise and experience, using clear and simple language, and leveraging digital communication channels, practitioners can build trust, inspire confidence, and provide valuable support to their patients. Juv’ae Celebrates 15 Years Of Excellence At Sold-Out Cosmetic Collective Conference

The conference attracted a record number of attendees.

On June 16-18, more than 170 cosmetic nurses attended three days of learning, networking, and upskilling at Juv’ae’s Cosmetic Collective conference. The location was picture perfect Taronga Zoo in Sydney, whose new events centre created the perfect setting for the event. Where else can you see Sydney’s stunning cityscape panorama in the background while listening to some of the best speakers in the industry?

The conference featured a diverse array of sessions designed to enrich and empower attendees across various topics. Highlights included clinical sessions delving into cutting-edge research and practices, insightful workshops on marketing strategies tailored for today’s cosmetic landscape, engaging discussions on harnessing the power of social media, and transformative sessions focused on enhancing leadership skills and fostering meaningful connections with customers and teams.

Besides well respected Aussie experts, the program featured four international KOLs from Germany, Netherlands, Israel and London who shared their techniques and experience in the industry with Juv’ae nurses, who seemed eager to learn from them.

The conference was supported by all major injectable companies as well as CUTERA representing the opportunity for nurses to delve into capital equipment technology. The sponsors offered workshops for attendees across their portfolios of brands. Nurses were hand-picked by the organisers and allocated to workshops that aligned with their interests and levels of expertise.

The highly anticipated gala dinner party on the last night celebrated the company’s 15th anniversary, with founders Nicole Schmid-Sanele and Melissa Isaia clearly proud of what they have built during this time: A community of cosmetic nurses that feels more like family.

See What Our Nurses Think Of Cosmetic Collective

Attending the Cosmetic Collective Conference 2024 was an invaluable experience. As a cosmetic nurse, I’ve seen current practices evolve, replaced by new, evidence-based guidelines showing us how to improve as practitioners. This underscores the importance of staying current in our rapidly changing industry, and attending educational conferences like the Cosmetic Collective is one way to do so. My passion for learning is what I love most about being with Juv’ae, as it offers numerous training opportunities that enable me to ensure patient safety and achieve optimal aesthetic

Talisha D’Arcy – Faced Aesthetics

Mel and Nic outdo themselves every year with the Juv’ae Cosmetic Collective Conferences. I couldn’t fault the location and speakers. It didn’t matter what level of nurse you are, you could learn something valuable from every speaker and workshop.

Being a part of the Juv’ae team feels just like a family. They care about me as a nurse, not just a number. They are there to celebrate with me along my journey and genuinely care about my business and work-life balance. Jacinta King does an amazing job with business mentoring; I should know — I’ve done their mentorship twice and still learn something new each time. Thank you Juv’ae.

Emilie Greer – L’Amour Aesthetics

Attending my first Cosmetic Collective Conference was an incredible experience that left me inspired and energised. The practical, hands-on workshops, insightful guest speakers and discussion panels were invaluable for professional growth. It was also a fantastic networking opportunity, fostering connections I’m sure will last a lifetime.

As a Juv’ae nurse, I cherish being part of a community that supports one another and focuses on safety and patient outcomes. The conference reinforced my passion for my profession and commitment to providing the best

As aesthetic clinicians, we often work independently, by attending events such as Cosmetic Collective, we gain exposure to industry leaders who challenge our thinking and inspire innovation. This continuous learning and connection with a broader community not only helps us improve ourselves but also enhances the quality of care and results we provide in our clinics.

The most rewarding part of being a part of the Juv’ae family for me is having solid, likeminded friendships across the country who genuinely want to help you

Chelsea Hyett – Sisä Skincare

The Cosmetic Collective Conference was invaluable, with Juv’ae ensuring it was educational and inspiring for nurses at all career stages.

What You Need To Know About The Rent-A-Room Trend

Can we expect to see a rise in shared spaces for salons and clinics? BizCover’s CHLOE BAIRD explores the risks and rewards of “rent-a-room” agreements for those in the spa and aesthetics industry.

Co-working spaces are not a new trend in Australia. Popular with start-ups, freelancers and entrepreneurs, co-working spaces are now attracting more attention from established businesses that are looking for a flexible and cost-effective alternative to renting or buying traditional office space.

The co-working trend is now filtering into the spa and aesthetics industry. With ventures like Cosmetic Laneway in Melbourne and Salon Lane in Sydney and Brisbane, these specialised shared spaces offer practitioners a professional space to work in without the commitment of opening their own salon.

There are plenty of benefits to working in a shared space. But of course, there are also some drawbacks. Before you decide whether to rent a shared space, it’s important to consider both sides.

What are shared spaces in the spa and aesthetics industry?

Shared spaces are collaborative environments where multiple beauty professionals can operate their businesses under one roof. In a shared space, you might find hairstylists, massage therapists, brow and lash specialists, nail technicians, cosmetic tattooists, dermal therapists and more. These professionals rent out individual rooms, suites or workstations where they can service their clients.

Generally, these spaces are managed by an operator who handles the facility’s maintenance and utilities. This allows the practitioners renting the rooms to focus on what’s most important – running a successful business.

Benefits of shared spaces

Cost-effectiveness

If you’re just starting out, then opting to begin your business within a shared space could help you save money while you’re finding your feet. Because you’re renting an established space, you can avoid the initial large investment of opening up your own salon. The ongoing costs may also be much lower than if you were operating your own salon.

Flexibility and scalability

One of the best things about renting a room in a shared space is the flexibility. Some shared spaces offer monthly lease agreements, while others may even rent out spaces and workstations by the day. This means you can scale up or down as your needs change.

Networking and collaboration

Working alongside other professionals in the spa and aesthetics

industry opens you up to all kinds of networking opportunities. A shared space is great for making valuable connections and sharing industry knowledge.

Access to high-quality amenities

For those in beauty and wellness, a clean, relaxing, and tastefully decorated workspace is non-negotiable. How you present your business is of a high importance for customers, who trust you to look after them.

A shared space may offer you access to higher quality amenities and equipment that you otherwise might be unable to afford, especially if you’re just starting out. These can include advanced equipment, comfortable waiting areas, and professional reception services that enhance the client experience and instil confidence.

Drawbacks of shared spaces

Limited control over creative designs

Depending on your contract, you may only be able to make minimal changes to your shared space rented room. Some shared spaces may allow more creative freedom than others, but you could find there is a set style that needs to be adhered to. This may impact your ability to establish your own unique brand identity.

Dependency on shared resources

Reliance on shared resources and amenities, such as high-end equipment, reception services and common areas, can lead to competition among practitioners. If resources are overbooked or unavailable during peak times, this could lead to client satisfaction and tension between practitioners.

Limited long-term stability

Renting a room or workstation in a shared space may not be the right choice if you are looking for long-term stability. Changes in management policy, an increase in rent or the sale of the property could disrupt your business operations.

Managing your risks with business insurance

When signing a shared space agreement, make sure you understand what kind of things are covered. Your agreement may even require you to have your own insurance before setting up shop, such as:

• Professional Indemnity insurance* is a common type of insurance for those in the spa and aesthetic industry. It is designed to protect

you from claims against your business for losses because of your negligent acts or omissions. This could be anything from providing incorrect advice to a client that leads to an injury, or accidentally harming your client during their session with you.

• Public Liability insurance* is another type of insurance that is common for beauty and wellness professionals. No matter what area you specialise in, it’s likely you’re in close contact with your clients throughout the day. Public Liability insurance covers you if a customer, member of the public, or a supplier claims against you for injury or damage to their property due to your negligent business activity.

EAHPRA & TGA Compliance Made Easy

Is

your marketing copy

AHPRA

and TGA
compliant with the ever changing

guidelines?

This new online tool will tell you, explains founder STEPHANIE MCLEAN.

This empowers practitioners, business owners, and marketers alike to confidently and compliantly market their services!

Why we created MyComply.ai

The idea to develop an AI-based compliance platform came to me shortly after experiencing the changes in advertising regulations within the cosmetic surgery industry. After spending an excessive amount of time updating social media content for our marketing clients, I realised there had to be a simpler and more efficient solution.

ver find yourself in that moment, crafting an Instagram caption, only to pause just before hitting ‘post’ and wonder, “Is this even compliant?” You scrutinise it endlessly, reading it over 400 times, until finally hitting that post button, only to be hit with a wave of intense fear?! That’s where MyComply.ai comes in.

What is MyComply.ai?

MyComply.ai is an AI-powered tool designed to check and generate compliant marketing content in line with AHPRA and TGA Advertising Guidelines. Unlike feeding the guidelines into ChatGPT which provides inconsistent results (we’ve tested it), we built a custom AI model that’s trained on the intricacies of the advertising guidelines, checking content for violations, potential breaches and content accuracy in seconds.

Despite some online chatter and conference discussions suggesting inputting guidelines into ChatGPT or Gemini, I discovered that results were inconsistent. The grey areas where AI platforms speculated or provided inaccurate information couldn’t be relied upon, and the process was too slow. While there are a plethora of services and resources available to assist practitioners, I found that they still fell short in crucial areas like implementation time and service capacity. The question lingered: how could we extend our assistance to a greater number of practitioners?

I realised that what our industry truly needed is a purpose-built AI content-checking platform that could not only identify breaches but also generate compliant content. It needed to seamlessly adapt to upcoming changes, such as the inclusion of non-surgical guidelines, in a user-friendly and fast process. In a case of extreme serendipity, I met my co-founders Xavier and Scott, both experienced in full stack development and deep learning by chance when I sat down next to them at a coworking space and pitched them my idea.

How does it work?

MyComply.ai works in a similar manner to Grammarly. However, instead of checking your grammar, our AI solution checks whether your copy is compliant with AHPRA and TGA guidelines. It does so by highlighting violations in red, potential breaches in yellow, and material that needs verification (such as comments about qualifications and experience) in blue. This is all performed within a matter of seconds. Users can interact with the identified issues to learn more, choose to manually rewrite their copy, ignore the violation, or use AI to generate and insert a non-violating replacement.

Where are things at?

Reminder to validate experience and insert a customisable disclaimer and medical registration number for each account

At the moment we’re focused on checking your written content for compliance and generating compliant content with customer feedback having the overarching need of “What can we say?”. However, future

Why Clinical Imaging Is A Non-Negotiable

Still taking your before and afters with a phone? Here’s why you’re non-compliant.

Your results are only as good as your before and after photos show – do we have your attention? You might disagree with this statement, however, from the perspective of your potential clients, and even most of your existing ones, this is true. Before and after images are an integral part of any surgical or non-surgical aesthetic business, not just for your marketing purposes, but also to keep track of your patients’ progress and to safeguard you from possible complaints, or worse, legal cases.

However, if you’re still using a phone or tablet to take your patients’ photos, you’re doing it wrong, and might actually be non-compliant, especially in light of the recent TGA and AHPRA guideline changes. In AHPRA’s ‘Guidelines for advertising a regulated health service’, the following is stated:

Care should be taken when using ‘before and after’ images in advertising a regulated health service as they have the potential to be misleading or deceptive. These images may cause a member of the public to have unreasonable expectations of a successful outcome.

Use of ‘before and after’ images are less likely to be misleading if:

• the images are as similar as possible in content, camera angle, background, framing and exposure

• the posture, clothing and make-up is consistent

• the lighting and contrast is consistent

• there is an explanation if images have been altered in any way

• the referenced treatment or procedure is the only visible change to the person being photographed

The only way to achieve the same camera angle, background, framing, exposure, and lighting, is by having a clinical photography system set up at your medispa or clinic. Using a phone camera automatically distorts the image as phones have several features built-in to ‘optimise’ the photo that cannot be controlled or turned off. The only difference in pre/post photographs should be the results of the treatment the patient has received. In an unregulated patient photography setup, image inconsistencies could include lighting direction, white balance, patient position, backdrop, and more. These inconsistencies hinder the effectiveness of a clinical photograph.

Clinical Imaging is a customised photography workflow that enables excellence in pre and post image capture, storage and distribution. Designed with efficiency, flexibility and simplicity in mind, each Clinical Imaging System is easily tailored to suit your clinic’s specific needs. Whether you’re in your first year of operating a solo injecting clinic, an experienced dermatologist or multi-practitioner plastic surgery clinic, we can tailor a system for you.

Our expertise is in creating the highest possible quality clinical imagery for your practice. Through our training, equipment and

Leading injectable and device company Merz Aesthetics have been working with Clinical Imaging for several years. Merz Marketing Director

Gary Bower tells us why Clinical Imaging remains their go-to team for photography assignments.

Why is clinical photography important for Merz?

Clinical photography is important for Merz as we have a very strong focus on the scientific aspects of Medical Aesthetics where high quality photography ensures that patients and their treating healthcare practitioners are able to accurately see results of their treatments. Good clinical photographs are also a really important element of any teaching and conference presentations.

How has the Clinical Imaging system assisted in the training academy?

Merz has installed the Clinical Imaging system at our training academy and all patients that are treated at the academy have before and after photos taken. These are kept as both a record for the treating HCPs if needed but may be used in marketing materials that are developed for demonstrating product results to other HCPs. Photos taken with the Clinical Imaging system are consistently good with photo angles being the same, as well as lighting, at all times.

Why do you think your clients should improve their clinical photography?

Keeping accurate records of patient treatments is important for a number of reasons. Having a pre treatment reference point is important and enables HCPs to demonstrate the changes in the after photographs which at times may be subtle. Some product results may take time to be evident and good clinical photography can assist the HCPs to show results that have been achieved in this extended time period. Current and aspiring KOLs can also benefit significantly by developing a good library of clinical photographs for their presentations.

support programs, we work with your teams to create these outcomes. No photographic knowledge is required by your team as all our installations are pre-calibrated. Our database system supports the keyword classification of images as well as fast retrieval for patient consultations, keynotes and medical practise software.

Clinical Imaging was founded by Woodrow Wilson, who has worked as a photographer in the aesthetics industry for over 10 years, and understands the requirements of practitioners.

Woodrow, why is it a bad idea to take before and after images with a phone or tablet?

Practitioners who do this are failing to capture the anatomy accurately and with sufficient detail to have a honest assessment. On top of that, they essentially pressing ‘random’ every time they press the capture button, as automatic settings on those devices cannot be reproduced.

You wouldn’t press random with a laser, don’t do it with a camera.

How have the recent TGA and AHPRA guideline changes made it even more important to have clinical imaging?

All the media attention on cosmetics has highlighted to the public they’re legally entitled to better standards in assessments, record keeping and privacy –standards that have been traditionally lax compared to a focus on marketing and social media. While I think TGA and pending AHPRA reforms were important to do, I don’t agree with some specific choices that will lead to patients being less informed and to see that info from overseas less regulated markets.

How does your software help with skin analysis?

We have two core filters which make use of the billions of colours that exist in raw image data.

These filters isolate certain chromophores in the image to highlight either vascularity in the skin or photo-damage in the epidermis. It really allows patients to understand what is going on with their skin health – and gives clinicians more discussion points during that vital initial consultation.

From the patients’ perspective, why should they also insist on clinical imaging?

We believe it’s something they should demand as a litmus test for standards within a clinic, to see that the specialist treating they are seeing has high quality diagnostic data to educate objectively on what is actually happening with their anatomy.

What kind of aesthetic business would you recommend your photography system to, i.e. even skin clinics that just do facials and maybe superficial lasers etc?

We are in both aesthetic and therapeutic clinics – and the system works equally well for both.

What I feel most proud of is seeing first year injectors have better photos than clinical studies in Ivy league journals. In addition, even established clinics can benefit as the pure time saved by doing photographs efficiently is enormous.

What does a business need to have your setup (in terms of space etc)?

We have installed in all sorts of room dimensions and we confidently recommend a minimum size of 1.2m wide by 2.5m long in a dedicated or shared treatment space.

Transforming Clinic Management

Aesthetic Nurse Software launches at NSS 2024, solving all your clinic management woes as an injector.

At the recent Non-Surgical Symposium (NSS) 2024, we were thrilled to introduce Aesthetic Nurse Software (ANS) to cosmetic nurses and injectors from across Australia. The response was overwhelmingly positive, highlighting the software’s potential to transform the way aesthetic clinics operate.

Throughout the weekend, we had conversations with nurses , doctors and dentists at various stages in their aesthetic careers that highlighted common pain points and challenges faced whilst trying to run and grow your own aesthetics business.

Here, we want to share what we’ve learnt from NSS and the solutions that Aesthetic Nurse Software can provide to solve those challenges.

Navigating Compliance Challenges

Cosmetic professionals often face challenges with compliance in record-keeping and data protection when it comes to patient documentation. Navigating everchanging regulations requires meticulous attention to detail, and any oversight can lead to serious consequences. Nurses, doctors and dentists must be constantly aware of their responsibilities as medical professionals and make sure they are adhering to any changes enforced by government bodies such as AHPRA and TGA. This can be time consuming and adds stress to their already demanding roles.

Solution: Effortless Compliance and Record Keeping

One of the standout features of Aesthetic Nurse Software is its robust compliance and record-keeping capabilities. NSS conference attendees praised the intuitive design that makes maintaining accurate patient records simple!

Our software simplifies compliance by covering everything you need to document your aesthetic treatments all in one place: from medical history and consent forms, to before and after photos, treatment notes and treatment mapping. This provides peace of mind knowing that all necessary documentation is up-to-date and easily accessible.

Time-consuming Administrative Tasks

Administrative tasks and booking management can be overwhelming, leaving nurses and clinic owners with less time to focus on patient care. The sheer volume of scheduling, rescheduling, and back and forth communication with patients often takes up hours each day, which takes time away from other critical aspects of running a clinic. This inefficiency can hinder growth and affect patient satisfaction due to slow responses or human errors.

Solution: Seamless Booking and Business Management

Many nurses at NSS 2024 expressed their appreciation for the seamless booking system, which integrates online bookings, deposits, reminders, and follow-ups into one easy-to-use platform. The booking system and calendar links directly to patient records within ANS meaning you have all the information you need at your fingertips, whenever you need it.

ANS with delegates at NSS 2024

ANS Client Testimonial

“I decided to work with ANS as I wanted to have a patient management system which was comprehensive but also easy to use. ANS have been great to work with and quick to respond. Most importantly they were responsive to change, when we had an update to AHPRA regulations, I raised this with ANS and within no time at all, the system had been updated to accommodate them. That’s an incredible business.

In Australia, it was impossible to find a system that ticked all the boxes to these regulations. From bookings to consent forms, pre and post care, invoices, photos, treatment notes and facial mapping.

ANS has it all.”

– Kerry Johnson (Registered Nurse), Owner of Joy by Nature, Brisbane

Additionally, our software goes beyond scheduling, offering comprehensive reporting tools that provide valuable insights into clinic performance, helping you make informed decisions to grow your business.

Manual Prescription Processes

Scripting is a crucial part of any cosmetic clinic but through conversations at NSS, it was clear that nurses have either had to create their own process to send scripts back and forth with their prescribing doctor or use a totally different app or software purely for scripts. This leads to nurses spending considerably more time on tasks that could be streamlined to make life easier for them and their prescribing doctor.

Solution: Scripting Made Simple

Aesthetic Nurse Software makes it quick and simple to create scripts. With a few clicks, it pulls all the necessary patient information, details of your prescriber and the products you are scripting for. Doctors can then easily locate outstanding scripts and, following a consultation, can sign-off to allow the nurse to continue with treatment.

The scripts are all stored in one central place, linked to each patient record making them easy to access and quick to see when another script is needed. Nurses at the NSS conference were impressed with how Aesthetic Nurse Software could remove the unnecessary friction in the workflow between them and their prescribing doctor.

Challenges of Manual Stock Management

Manual stock and inventory management is another significant challenge for cosmetic nurses running their own clinics. Keeping track of skincare and injectable stock without automation often leads to errors and inefficiencies, impacting the clinic’s ability to operate smoothly and efficiently.

Solution: Optimised Stock Management For Better Efficiency

Efficient stock management is crucial for any medical aesthetics clinic, and Aesthetic Nurse Software have just launched a brand-new feature to take the hassle out of stock takes! At NSS 2024, nurses highlighted how much easier this new inventory management tool is compared to existing software.

With real-time updates and alerts for low stock levels, you can ensure that your clinic is always well-equipped without overstocking. This not only saves costs but also ensures that you have the necessary supplies to provide the best care to your patients.

Juggling Multiple Systems

Most nurses and injectors that we spoke to at NSS are juggling multiple software systems and paper records to manage their clinic. Nurses told us they frequently switch between platforms to access patient data, appointment details, inventory information and prescriptions. This not only wastes time but also increases the risk of errors with data, making it challenging to maintain a streamlined operation.

Solution: An all-in-one software, specifically for aesthetics.

Aesthetic Nurse Software provides an all-in-one solution, streamlining clinic operations by bringing together all the key areas for running your business, into one place. This comprehensive system eliminates the need to jump from one software to another throughout the day, making life easier for nurses and enhancing efficiency.

A message from ANS Founder, Jo Hayward (Registered Nurse):

Exhibiting at NSS 2024 proved that Aesthetic Nurse Software is a perfect fit for cosmetic nurses and injectors in Australia who need a software that takes care of all the time consuming, but important, tasks that come with owning a business. That’s why we built ANS to take the stress out of compliance and free up time wherever possible, allowing practitioners to focus on what’s important – offering an excellent service and growing their business.

A Journey to Excellence

How KAREN MERING DE GONZALEZ achieved SafeSkin Certification and elevated her business.

Nestled in the heart of picturesque Shellharbour in New South Wales, amidst a blend of nature, a vibrant community, and stunning beaches, lies Skin Correctives – a haven of skin wellness meticulously curated by Karen Mering de Gonzalez. With a profound passion for skin and an unwavering dedication to excellence, Karen’s journey in the world of skin has been nothing short of inspiring.

As the founder and visionary behind Skin Correctives, Karen has always prioritised integrity, professionalism, and client safety. Yet, like many in our field, she faced the challenges of navigating a landscape riddled with varying standards and regulatory uncertainties. It was amidst these challenges and after becoming one of the first ABIC Clinic Members in Australia that Karen discovered SafeSkin Certification – an initiative that would not only recognise the high standards in her clinic but also set a new benchmark for excellence in the industry.

“For us, ABIC SafeSkin Certification wasn’t just about ticking boxes or earning a badge. It was about reaffirming our commitment to our clients and our profession,” Karen reflects, her voice filled with a blend of pride and determination.

Skin Correctives was the first clinic to achieve SafeSkin Certification as part of the trial ‘Beta Version’ and Karen was instrumental in helping ABIC refine the processes behind SafeSkin to create an easy, streamlined program that would be accessible and achievable for busy business owners and professionals. For Karen and her team at Skin Correctives, it meant investing time into providing important feedback on the initial program, while redefining parts of her operational practices to meet the highest standards of care.

“The journey wasn’t without its challenges, but every step brought us closer to our goal of certifying our high standards for our clients, and elevating the industry through the creation of a much needed benchmark program,” Karen shares, her eyes reflecting the passion that drives her forward.

What is SafeSkin Certification?

SafeSkin Certification is beyond accolades and recognition, it is the elevation of a salon, clinic or professionals reputation with its clients, instilling confidence in those who seek reliable, quality treatments. “SafeSkin Certification isn’t just about what happens behind the scenes. It’s about the trust our clients place in us every day and the pride we take in delivering results that exceed expectations,” Karen explains.

For Skin Correctives, it has also fostered a culture of excellence within the clinic, inspiring team members to uphold the highest standards and deliver exceptional results. Today, Skin Correctives stands as a testament to the power of SafeSkin Certification – a beacon of excellence in beauty, dermal and aesthetics, spearheaded by Karen as a SafeSkin Ambassador with an unwavering commitment

to professionalism and client wellbeing. “For us, SafeSkin Certification isn’t just about obtaining a credential. It is a reaffirmation of our commitment to our clients and our profession.”

SafeSkin Certification, Step-by-Step

Achieving SafeSkin Certification is straightforward thanks to the participation and feedback of leading clinics and professionals in Australia. It is a wellstructured process designed to support clinics every step of the way.

The journey begins with an initial consultation where you and your team get the specifics of the certification process from your SafeSkin Facilitator. This consultation outlines the steps involved and provides a roadmap for the journey ahead. You are then introduced to your SafeSkin portal and given easy steps to start and complete the process. You will be asked to upload examples of certain systems and documents, such as your HR Processes for review. If you don’t have all your systems in place, we help to provide them and guide you to customise them. Once all your documentation is uploaded we conduct a final assessment, and grant your SafeSkin Certification.

“Our initial assessment was eye-opening. It provided clarity on areas where we could enhance workplace safety measures and operational efficiency,” Karen shares, emphasising the invaluable insights gained during this critical phase.

At every phase you are supported by a SafeSkin Certification Facilitator who provides tailored guidance to ensure successful execution. Since becoming the inaugural clinic to attain SafeSkin Certification in Australia, Skin Correctives has seen tangible benefits. SafeSkin Certification has elevated their reputation for new clients, instilling unparalleled confidence in clients who seek reliable, top-tier care.

Today, Skin Correctives stands as a testament to the transformative impact of SafeSkin Certification – a beacon of excellence in beauty, dermal therapy and aesthetics. Looking ahead, Karen remains resolute in her dedication to pushing boundaries, embracing innovation, and continuing to set new benchmarks for the industry she holds dear. The journey of achieving SafeSkin Certification has been transformative, and Karen’s story serves as an inspiration for other clinics to follow.

Embrace the opportunity to elevate your clinic’s standards and join a movement that prioritises excellence, safety, and client trust.

The Power of the 5 Touchpoint Framework

Are you converting clicks to clients? The team from marketing agency Élevé Studio explain the five touchpoints that are crucial for effective marketing.

Élevé Studio emphasises that solely relying on one marketing channel, such as social media or traditional advertising, is not enough to convert cold leads into paying, returning clients. With all the noise and distractions in the media space, we have just three seconds to capture someone’s attention. Research and experience have shown that it takes at least five touchpoints to turn a cold lead into a loyal customer. This multifaceted approach ensures repeated exposure and engagement, building trust and familiarity over time.

“We believe in a comprehensive, integrated marketing strategy,” said Élevé Studio Founder Laine van Deventer. “Our five-touchpoint framework is designed to strategically guide potential clients from awareness to conversion.”

Example of the 5 Touchpoint Framework

1. Social Media Ads

We start with targeted social media ads to capture attention. For instance, imagine a busy working mum who sees an ad about rejuvenating treatments during her daily scroll through Facebook or Instagram. The ad uses our three-step sales pitch to resonate with her concerns

about ageing skin and introduces our non-surgical cosmetic solutions. Let’s say she sees our ad, but her husband calls, or there’s school pickup, so we lose her and she doesn’t book in… But, she remembers something from our ad.

2. Google Ads

Next, we run Google Ads to capture search intent. Later that day, she might search for solutions to tired-looking skin and sees our Google ad, remembering the brand from earlier. This reinforces our message and guides her to a dedicated landing page.

3. Dedicated Landing Page

The landing page is designed specifically for her demographic, focusing on the treatments she is interested in without distractions like other treatments and services. Here, she can find detailed information, testimonials, and a clear call to action to book a consultation that is designed specifically and uniquely for her.

4. Retargeting Ads

If she doesn’t book immediately, we deploy retargeting ads. These ads remind her of the benefits of our treatments and present a limited-time offer, creating a sense of urgency and encouraging her to take the next step.

The team at Élevé Studio

5. Social Proof and Authority Building

Lastly, we leverage social proof through our social media accounts, showcasing before-and-after photos (within guidelines and regulations), education, and expert advice. This reinforces her trust in our clinic and services, making her more likely to book an appointment.

Social Media Ads vs. Google Ads

Social media ads and Google ads serve distinct purposes within our marketing strategy. Social media ads, such as those on Facebook and Instagram, are a type of broadcast media. They allow us to showcase visual elements, audio, or dialogue to a broad audience, similar to TV or radio ads. The key advantage is the ability to target specific demographics based on detailed user data. For example, we can create an ad featuring vibrant visuals and compelling copy that speaks directly to a busy working mum’s concerns about ageing skin.

In contrast, Google ads are based on search intent. When a potential client actively searches for a solution, like “best skin rejuvenation treatment,” our Google ads appear at the top of their search results. This type of advertising targets individuals who are already interested in finding a solution, making it a highly effective way to capture qualified leads.

Landing Page vs. Website

A crucial component of our strategy involves directing potential clients to a dedicated landing page rather than a general website. A website serves as an online portfolio for your brand, showcasing all treatments and services with consistent messaging across various sections. While a website is essential for providing comprehensive information about your clinic, it can also overwhelm new visitors with too many options and distractions.

A landing page, on the other hand, is highly focused and designed for a specific marketing campaign or demographic. It eliminates navigation menus and other distractions, presenting only the most relevant information and a clear call to action. For instance, a landing page for a busy working mum interested in skin rejuvenation would feature targeted messaging, client testimonials, and a simple booking form, all aimed at converting her visit into a booked appointment.

Integrated Marketing and Sales Engine

Élevé Studio’s integrated marketing and sales engine not only generates leads but also focuses on converting them into lifelong customers. By briefing clinic teams on marketing efforts and offering internal incentives, the agency ensures a seamless journey for new clients, enhancing the overall patient experience.

Integrated Marketing and Sales Engine

Élevé Studio’s integrated marketing and sales engine focuses on generating leads and ensuring that these leads have a seamless journey from awareness to booking. Our role is to drive potential clients to your clinic and support your team in converting these leads into loyal customers. Key components of our approach include:

1. Lead Generation: Utilising targeted advertising strategies across multiple platforms to attract potential clients.

2. Engagement: Keeping potential clients engaged through well-crafted landing pages and retargeting campaigns.

3. Conversion Support: Providing your team with detailed insights and strategies on how to convert leads, including briefs, guidance, and advice on personalised customer interactions.

However, it’s crucial for clinics to recognise the importance of their internal processes in converting these leads into loyal, returning clients. We advise in:

• Briefing Your Team: Educating your staff about ongoing marketing campaigns so they understand the journey of the leads and can continue the conversation seamlessly.

• In-Clinic Experience: Offering suggestions for enhancing the client experience, such as personalised greetings, special offers, or added comforts like a welcome drink or complimentary head massage.

• Incentive Programs: Encouraging internal incentive programs to encourage staff to convert leads into booked appointments and to cross-promote additional services.

“While we drive the leads to your door, the final step in the conversion process happens within your clinic. A positive, memorable in-clinic experience is essential to turning a firsttime visitor into a loyal customer,” added Laine.

A Holistic Approach to Marketing

At Élevé Studio, we specialise in an omnichannel approach that not only focuses on maximising your profit margins but also targets your ideal demographic and adapts to seasonality changes within the medical aesthetics industry. This comprehensive strategy ensures that your marketing efforts are always relevant, timely, and effective, driving sustainable growth for your clinic.

Targeting New Markets

3 ways to increase audience reach without spending a cent, according to HEATHER FOORD

Did you know that more than 30% of business owners list their biggest stressor as ‘fear of being responsible for the business’ failure’? In the spa and aesthetics industry, it’s no different. In between managing staff, marketing, finances, treating and keeping clients happy, it can be hard to prioritise ways to grow your clinic.

I’m here to tell you that growing your clinic, increasing revenue and capturing a new customer base doesn’t have to cost money and take up copious amounts of your time (because, we all know the importance of work/life balance and the latest season of Selling Sunset isn’t going to watch itself). So, if you want to attract new clients, it’s not about investing thousands into new treatments or new branding. It’s about being creative with what you have.

Here are three strategies to help your clinic work smarter, not harder when it comes to expansion:

1. Embrace Prevention, Not Just Treatment

C-section scarring or post-mastectomy. Similarly, lymphatic drainage massages aren’t just for slimming; they’re also excellent for reducing swelling and improving circulation, making them ideal for post-surgical recovery or chronic pain management.

Core Tip: Market your offerings like the Swiss Army knife of treatments. Reach out to local surgeons or specialists to chat about your rehabilitative treatment options and provide them with treatment brochures to provide to their patients!

The old adage “prevention is better than cure” has never been more relevant – and it’s not just in the aesthetics industry. Recent trends and research show a significant consumer swing towards preventative care, meaning that people aren’t just looking to fix issues once they’ve happened; but they’re wanting to prevent them from happening in the first place.

According to a 2023 report by the Global Wellness Institute, preventative wellness is a rapidly growing sector, so embrace your inner Gen Z and be a trendsetter. Begin by repositioning your current services – taking a more ‘preventative’ approach with your marketing. Your clients are looking for long-term solutions that preserve their youth, instead of quick fix options that aim to reverse signs of ageing.

Core Tip: Promote your services and skincare routines as essential parts of a preventative lifestyle. Offer packages that focus on regular maintenance – think of it like a gym membership but for your wellbeing.

2. Find a Health or Rehabilitation Angle

Have you ever considered that your treatments could serve a dual purpose? Many spa and beauty treatments have incredible rehabilitative and health benefits that mean you could broaden your audience appeal – without even adding to your current offering!

Technologies like LED light therapy, is not only fantastic for skin rejuvenation but also for treating conditions like acne, reducing inflammation and even promoting wound healing – think women with

3. Look into Partnerships

Collaborations can be a game-changer for reaching new markets. Partnering with local businesses, brands or even influencers can introduce your services to a whole new audience. The key is to find partners whose values and customer base align with yours and find a way that you’ll both benefit from the collab.

Could you team up with a local gym to offer combined wellness packages? A Pilates studio might love to giveaway a voucher to your clinic as part of their 8-week challenges or a local health food store or cafes might pop 10% discount vouchers at their counter for your services.

Core Tip: Position collaborations or partnerships as providing clients a holistic health solution and find businesses that will benefit from the partnership too. Long-term relationships are key – so you need to make it worthwhile for the two of you.

Ultimately, targeting new audiences doesn’t have to mean changing your services. With a little creativity and collaboration, you have the potential not only to expand your reach but also increase awareness –while making some great relationships with other like-minded brands. My Love Affair With The Alma Hybrid

DR EDWINA MORGAN shares the journey of her partnership with Alma’s Hybrid, and how it has enhanced her treatment offering.

In the intricate dance of aesthetic medicine, the right technology can be a game-changer, creating profound impacts on both patient outcomes and the clinician’s professional journey. Dr Edwina Morgan, a distinguished Cosmetic Physician and Key Opinion Leader, shares her passionate relationship with the Alma Hybrid in this insightful interview.

Personal Connection and First Impressions

Can you describe your first interaction with Alma?

The acquisition of a laser was something that I had lamented over for years, and I invested a lot of time in researching this pursuit. I wanted to make a thoughtful purchase; one which offered the most versatile, and effective treatments for my patients, and would afford me reliable and safe results.

It was during my research phase that I discovered the Alma Hybrid. I was initially impressed by the technology, but this was not the sole feature that ultimately led to the purchase of my first device.

How did your relationship with Alma begin? Was there a specific moment or demonstration that won you over?

My courtship with Alma was slow, steady and genuine. All too often, when we engage representatives from big companies, we are met with smarmy spiels and slick sales pitches. As a professional, I find myself recoiling from the former, and craving evidence-based analysis, educated explanations and a scientific justification as to why I should invest in a certain technology. With Alma, I received exactly this. I felt informed on the intricacies

of the technology. Educated on the features. Empowered by explanation of what my patients would receive, and reassured that it would also contribute to my business as it continued to grow.

What were your initial impressions of the Alma Hybrid, and how did it captivate you?

The Alma Hybrid platform is a visually beautiful machine. Adorned with rose-gold accents, and a sleek, black silhouette, she is the perfect complement to the modern aesthetic of my clinic. Looks aside, it’s her internal workings I fell in love with. Fractionated ablative and non-ablative technology that can be up-titrated, depending on the patient’s dermatological profile, giving rise to exceptional results with acceptable downtime.

What made you say, “I do” to the Alma Hybrid?

When I purchased the Alma Hybrid, I didn’t just wed the machine. I married into a family. The Alma family, originating in Israel, is a closeknit community of like-minded professionals, who strive to continuously challenge the world of aesthetics, all whist remaining patient-centric and passionate about achieving beautiful results.

Experience at Alma Academy Barcelona

Can you share your experience at Alma Academy Barcelona? What made this getaway special and enriching?  Barcelona 2024 was the first Alma Academy I had the privilege of attending. I chose to attend at this particular time to ensure I had achieved a reasonable amount of clinical and practical exposure with the device in my own clinic. This meant I could engage on a deeper, more constructive level with the experts on hand. During the intense, 4-day convention, I was able to listen, learn and collaborate with experts from around the globe on their experiences with the Alma Hybrid. I was given the opportunity to bring relevant, real-life examples into a forum and receive advice on how to treat, and how to optimise the settings of my device. I was able to bring home a suite of skills, protocols and pearls of wisdom from experts in the field. And I still reflect on this advice today.

Training and Support

How was your initial training with Alma?

The training I have received from Alma has been abundant. It began prior to my purchase, and has continued well into my ownership. The company invests immeasurably in physicians and technicians, to ensure constant evolution of knowledge, understanding and

results. As a sole practitioner, I have access to an intimate team of educators, clinical advisors, marketing gurus and businessdevelopment specialists. I feel they have all contributed to the successful integration of this device into my practice.

Being a KOL for Alma

How did you come to be a Key Opinion Leader for Alma? What does this role mean to you personally and professionally?  Honestly, I believe the role of Key Opinion Leader for Alma evolved organically. My affection and admiration for the product ultimately illustrated my loyalty and allegiance with the technology. It is easy to speak on projects of passion when one truly believes in its foundation, and this has certainly been solidified by the results my patients receive from the device.

Day-to-Day Relationship

How does the Alma Hybrid fit into your daily routine now? How has it become an integral part of your practice?  I am based in sunny Queensland, where we have warm (and rather harsh) weather for nine months of the year. Sun damage, and daily exposure is a normality, therefore I must consider integration of a laser very carefully. My consultation process always starts with skin health, and skincare. This then naturally transitions into more invasive procedures such as the Alma Hybrid. Historically, winter is the ideal and most popular time for treatment, but I spend the preceding months preparing my patient’s skin with the appropriate actives to ensure best outcomes and longevity of results. Needless to say, I reference my laser on a daily basis. Initially planting the seed,

Can you describe the key points you highlighted about the Alma Hybrid in your presentation at the NSS 2024?

The key point I wanted to showcase in my presentation is that the Hybrid settings and intensity are adaptable, depending on patient’s lifestyle and allowances for downtime. The article upon which the presentation was based compares a one-off invasive/high setting Hybrid treatment, with two low-moderate setting treatments over a 12 month period. Patient satisfaction, downtime, adverse events etc. It was affirmed that a low-moderate treatment protocol maintained high efficacy of results and increased patient satisfaction, with a lower incidence of post-inflammatory pigmentation. I found this of clinical relevance for physician and patient in the way that superb results can be achieved without prolongation of healing or downtime for the busy patient.

educating my patients on the technology and foreseen downtime, then eventually preparing them for treatment, and seeing them through their recovery.

What are the most significant ways Alma has enhanced your practice and your interactions with patients?

Owning the Alma Hybrid has allowed me to consult, advise and treat my patients inhouse. Previously, I would on-refer for laser treatments. And whist I acknowledge no laser has the ability to treat all concerns or diagnoses, it has allowed me to recommend a more comprehensive treatment programme, whereby I can prescribe and deliver skincare, laser and injectables under one consultative umbrella. A more holistic approach.

Dr Edwina Morgan’s relationship with the Alma Hybrid encapsulates the perfect blend of professional fulfilment and technological innovation. From her initial research to becoming a Key Opinion Leader, Dr. Morgan’s journey has been characterised by a deepening appreciation for the device’s versatility and effectiveness. The Alma Hybrid has not only enhanced her ability to provide tailored, high-quality care but has also become a cornerstone of her practice, embodying a partnership built on trust, ongoing learning, and shared success. This enduring love affair with ALMA reflects how the right technology, when embraced passionately, can profoundly transform both a clinician’s practice and their patient outcomes. The Concept Of “Fast Aesthetics”

DR CHERYL HASEEB explains her observation of how aesthetic treatment options are catering increasingly to the time-poor.

In recent years, aesthetic treatments have surged in popularity, driven by advancements in technology and a growing cultural emphasis on self-care and beauty. Patients are seeking “Fast Aesthetic” treatments that are safe, effective, convenient with maximum results and minimal downtime. Patients are drawn to treatments that cater to their fast-paced, busy lifestyle while ensuring visible, consistent results without disrupting their daily routines. Innovative technologies in aesthetic medicine including the rise of non-surgical procedures such as injectables, laser rejuvenation and non-invasive body contouring, is meeting patient expectations and rapidly becoming the new norm in this space. One of the leading treatment modalities in Fast Aesthetics for me is the Venus Versa Pro, which offers an all in one treatment known as the Tribella. This cutting-edge treatment combines the latest technology in photo rejuvenation, skin tightening, skin resurfacing in a single, convenient 90-minute appointment known. Through advanced treatments like the Versa Pro, practitioners can effectively address both the symptoms and underlying causes of ageing, providing comprehensive care for youthful and healthy skin in as little as one 90-minute appointment.

In a world of “Fast”, it is essential for patients and practitioners to balance the desire for immediate results with safety and quality.

Similarly, other aesthetic treatments such as dermal fillers and neurotoxins are popular options to smooth wrinkles, volumise and enhance facial contours leaving patients with that instant gratification satisfaction. These popular treatments are sought after for their minimally invasive nature and the immediate, visible results they offer, catering to those seeking subtle enhancements without the downtime and risks associated with surgical procedures.

Don’t ignore the risks

Despite their benefits, these popular “Fast Aesthetic” treatments are not without risks and potential complications and the need for education is crucial. Common side effects can range from temporary redness, swelling, or bruising, to more serious complications such as blindness or death. Furthermore, while results are quick, they may not be as long-lasting as those from more invasive procedures, potentially requiring regular maintenance sessions. In a world of “Fast”, it is essential for patients and practitioners to balance the desire for immediate results with safety and quality. Selecting devices that are manufactured by companies that have obtained FDA and/or TGA approval for aesthetic procedures is one step to mitigate these risks. Secondly, selecting licensed medical providers that are trained in aesthetics is crucial to ensure the safety and efficacy of treatments.

outcomes. This dangerous trend can pressure individuals to seek dramatic changes, which, without proper consultation and a skilled practitioner, can result in unnatural appearances and dissatisfaction. It’s important for both providers and patients to prioritise realistic expectations and a responsible approach to aesthetic treatments, ensuring that the enhancements not only look natural but also preserve the individual’s unique features and wellbeing. Terms such as “pillow face” have gained popularity with the frequent overuse of fillers and neurotoxins resulting in an unnatural appearance commonly seen in some Hollywood celebrities.

The rise in regenerative aesthetics

With a recent shift in the norm, the new buzz word among the beauty industry is regenerative aesthetics. This new branch of aesthetic medicine focuses on treatments that utilise the patient’s own cells to regenerate and restore skin and tissues naturally from within. Treatments such as biostimulators, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy and collagen induction therapy such as the Venus VivaMD are in this group. Patients are seeking procedures that enhance their natural beauty safely, effectively with minimum downtime and ultimately help them “age better”. As the ageing process occurs on multiple layers of the skin, it is important for providers to have a comprehensive treatment plan to achieve the best outcomes.

Social media platforms showcase before-and-after transformations that often promote an unrealistic beauty standard, encouraging patients to seek rapid procedures without considering the long-term aesthetic or health

Fast Aesthetics continues to reshape the world of aesthetic medicine by integrating the latest cutting-edge technology with non-surgical treatments that include a multifaceted treatment approach. With growing trends and fads in the beauty industry, it is essential for both practitioners and patients to seek licensed providers that offer treatments that are safe and effective. With fast-paced lives and busy schedules, “Fast Aesthetics” continues to surge in popularity and shows no signs of diminishing. This approach not only boosts patient satisfaction but also upholds the integrity of treatment outcomes in the swiftly evolving world of aesthetic medicine.

Enhancing Treatment Results With Cell Cycle Catalyst

We sat down with SkinCeuticals KOL and dermatologist and SkinCeuticals Global Director of Research and Innovation, MAGGIE SU

Dr Lain, tell us about your work in Austin, Texas.

I’m the Chief Medical Officer of a group of practices we have with 12 locations in two states. I see medical aesthetic patients every day. I run a lot of clinical trials as well. So I kind of just run around from room to room, seeing everybody who comes in and whether it’s research or clinical, and then I have the administrative aspects of what I do as well.

Do you feel the aesthetic needs of patients have changed in recent years?

Certainly, I think the importance of skincare has seen a resurgence in the last few years, and I think Covid helped with that. As practices realised that skincare was a major revenue source that was really the only one available, it gained much more importance within the practice owners’ eyes. And since then, as you know, companies have really come out with innovative products and innovative delivery systems to enhance the efficacy of the products. I think the importance of skincare is gaining momentum, particularly aligned with procedures.

And that is where SkinCeuticals’ new Cell Cycle Catalyst comes in?

Yes, Cell Cycle Catalyst was developed to be used along procedures, but I would hate to pigeonhole it as only a pre and post procedure product, because I do think that it is very useful to be used as part of an anti-ageing regimen, both because of its gentle, exfoliating properties, which will enhance skin quality, but also its ability to really make the other products within the regimen essentially work better.

What’s the benefit of having several different acids in one product?

The idea here was to use a gentle exfoliating blend that both exfoliates from the very tip top of the skin with the phytic acid, which is such a large molecule that it really just sits on the skin and helps to exfoliate a little bit, all the way down to lactic and glycolic acid, which is the smallest alpha hydroxy acid within the blend. So we’re trying to exfoliate the entire thickness.

We’re trying to do it in a way that is so gentle that it doesn’t cause irritation, and therefore can be used for pretty much every patient. And in addition, we have added the taurine in there, which, if we’re going to ask the cells to accelerate their turnover, to grow faster, we need to give them the energy to do that. And the taurine is the additional ingredient that is novel to any other SkinCeuticals product that delivers that energy to the cells so that we can achieve what we’re trying to with

Can we “overdo” it with accelerating our cell turnover?

I think what people might be referring to is this idea of DNA methylation and telomere shortening, where the idea is, over time and because of photo ageing and just intrinsic ageing, you are going to have changes to your DNA that will at some point, cause the cells to go into senescence and stop replicating. I get that. However, we know that retinoids and exfoliation do have an effect on delaying cellular senescence, and now there are other ingredients that will soon be incorporated that will target cellular senescence as well, so that we are pushing out or delaying the senescent phase of a cell’s life cycle.

Maggie, what was the process of developing Cell Cycle Catalyst like? Any challenges?

I think every single product that we make has the same milestones, but every product has its own challenges. I think of them as like our little babies. For Cell Cycle Catalyst in particular, the challenging part was incorporating the taurine into the formula, because it was new to the group. Initially it went in perfectly. We’re like, ah, this is going to be an easy one, but this is when we saw the crystallisation of the lower temperatures. That was one of the big challenges. And then the second challenge was the scale up. So in other formulations, we have challenges when it comes to the act of stability. We didn’t have the issue with this. So those were, like the two main challenges. I would say it was probably on par. It wasn’t harder or easier than a typical project. It’s probably right where we want it to be but, yeah, we have a whole spectrum of challenges.

July 1st heralded a significant milestone in professional skincare with the launch of INSKIN.CO, offering a wide range of cosmedical skincare products, designed to provide accessible, evidence-based solutions for radiant, healthy skin, all priced at $55, except for the starter kits, which are valued at $135.

Founded by the renowned Maria Enna-Cocciolone, who is also the founder of O COSMEDICS and GINGER&ME, this new addition completes her trilogy of home brands and reflects the brand’s ethos of minimal beauty combined with scientific expertise, offering a curated selection of cleansers, serums, hydrators, and masks suitable for all ages. Each product is formulated to deliver visible results, embodying the brand’s mantra of ‘simple, but not basic.’ The INSKIN.CO range is also designed with sustainability in mind, featuring recyclable packaging to reduce environmental impact and promote eco-conscious practices throughout the skincare journey.

Maria Enna-Cocciolone shared her excitement about the launch:

“My goal is to provide professional skin clinics with a selection of active ingredients that are clinically proven and cater to every patient’s budget and skin needs. I believe that with the launch of INSKIN.CO, this goal is now a tangible reality, poised to revolutionise the skincare industry.”

Maria, congratulations on INSKIN.CO, what motivated you to create yet another skincare brand?

The Professional Aesthetic Industry does not have a cosmedical brand that is professional only, endorsed by skin experts, online restricted to support a return patient at an attainable price point.

INSKIN.CO has been created to support clinics that need a premium product, at a lower price point, giving them the resources they need to support a wider market, inclusive of but not limited to teens, males, and the price sensitive.

Maria Enna-Cocciolone

For someone unfamiliar with your brands, can you briefly explain the differences between the 3 cosmedical ranges?

It’s fair to say there is no one brand that can be all things to all people, hence my drive to bring a trilogy of brands to the table that offers a buffet of active ingredients, from different origins, using different doses and offering varying experiences and connections for the patient.

O COSMEDICS is the crème de la crème of anti-ageing, powered by an exclusive V8 Peptide, it is a serious skincare brand that supports all skin concerns and conditions, is super active, multifaceted in its approach and a force to be reckoned with when it comes to youthful, healthy, radiant skin.

NEUROCOSMEDICS by GINGER&ME is based on the science of Neurocosmetics,  and focuses on neuro ageing, inflammaging, skin repair, recovery, and the preservation of healthy glowing skin.

INSKIN.CO is a straightforward and inclusive brand, simple, but not basic, it targets skin concerns with botanical functional actives, is evidence based, with minimal fuss, delivers tangible results at an attainable price.

What kind of skin clinic or spa is INSKIN.CO best suited for?

INSKIN.CO has been created to support the patient coming to the clinic and leaving without product for price sensitive reasons, for patients in households struggling to make ends meet and need professional skincare options at lower prices, it’s perfect for teens, for males and those looking for minimalistic routines.

The range includes:

• Cleansers & Exfoliants

• Foaming Enzyme Cleanser

• Powder Cleanser & Exfoliant

• Corrective Serums

• Bakuchiol & B3 Serum

• Vitamin D & B5 Serum

• Vitamin C Serum

• Multi-Active & BHA Serum

• Arbutin & B3 Serum

• Tremella & B3 Serum

• Hydrators

• Liquid Hydrator

• Gel Cream Hydrator

• Blemish Control Cream

• Masks

• Calm & Soothe Daily Sheet Mask

• Plump & Hydrate Daily Sheet Mask

INSKIN COSMEDICS works to service the professional aesthetic market, to give them something exclusive that will keep the clinic patients out of Mecca, Sephora, Adore Beauty, Department Stores, Pharmacies and so on when looking for effective skincare. Our trilogy of home-grown brands along with DP Dermaceuticals, OPTY.NC, and GESKE gives clinics an array of choices at every level.

We have a dedicated education team, we have just launched our INSKIN E-LEARNING HUB, we have 19 BDMS on the road to service our partners face to face, and like our BDMS, our customer service team are all skin experts to support next level growth. Our marketing support and digital campaigns drive customers in clinic doors and along with our partners we make a skin difference

Healthy Skin, Simply Science

How Neogenesis is transforming skins

The talk of the town is stem cell molecules. Stem cell molecules have become increasingly popular as an ingredient in skincare products due to their ability to repair, regenerate and protect skin cells, and to modulate the immune system, as well as, reduce inflammation.

The history of stem cell molecule research dates back to the 1970’s and has since been a field of great interest for scientists. In 1975, Drs Howard Green and James Rheinwald at MIT made an important discovery about human keratinocytes, showing that they could be cultured. This led to further discoveries about tissue regeneration and how stem cells can be used in skin care treatments. By 2008, Dr Greg Maguire had developed the concept of Systems Therapeutics as a new way of thinking about pharmacological products which opened the door for advances in using stem cell released molecules.

The latest science behind healthy skin is a little-known company making a difference to skin health for both women and men. Who is this new company you ask? NeoGenesis is located in the US, UK, Japan and also in Australia. We spoke with Borka Buseska, the contact in Australia for NeoGenesis to find out what all the excitement was about. Borka has an interesting background, giving her some valuable views on the beauty and aesthetics industry. SPA+CLINIC met with Borka at the Alma International Education conference in Spain and as we could tell Borka was very passionate about her involvement with NeoGenesis, we wanted to find out more.

A bit about Borka

Borka had a 30-year career in public service and for personal reasons had to retire from that career. She decided to change to something completely different and move into an industry where it is all about making people feel great about themselves.

Borka bought into a franchise – Laser Clinics Australia (LCA) and thoroughly enjoyed her time with LCA, having opened two clinics. In order to help her supply of qualified staff and assist in learning about this new industry, she embarked on opening a Registered Training Organisation (RTO).

The RTO delivered the Beauty Diploma, Advanced Diploma in Laser Hair Removal and the Diploma of Leadership and Management. While doing all this, Borka decided to study and gain an advanced understanding of aesthetics. As a result, Borka now has two University degrees, a Bachelor in Social Science majoring in Applied Economics and an Associated Degree in Health Science and Wellness.

It was during an Aesthetics Practitioner Association Network (APAN) conference in 2022 that Borka met Steve McGee, the CEO of NeoGenesis. They started talking about

Borka Buseska
Steve McGee

the NeoGenesis products and the amazing before and after photos.

Borka became intrigued about the products. Steve McGee was looking to expand in Australia and was looking for someone like Borka.

Given Borka’s background with other products we wanted to know why she decided to go with NeoGenesis.

“It was an easy decision after meeting with Steve. He showed me some before and after images and they were almost too incredible to believe. I told him that, too. Steve took me through the science and published peer-reviewed papers (the gold standard in science in the United States). There was overwhelming evidence of what NeoGenesis was achieving. During the conference, I met an Australian who had been using NeoGenesis Recovery serum, and she showed me her photos (on her phone). The results in such a short time were truly remarkable. I was HOOKED!

The other very important factor to joining NeoGenesis is Steve himself. He genuinely wants to help as many people as he possibly can. He is striving to gift products to 1 million people that are struggling with skin conditions, including people going through chemo or radiation that can’t afford the products. To be able to achieve that, sales in Australia need to increase. I want to be part of an organisation that has a soul like that. It was those two factors that made me decide to join NeoGenesis.”

How is progress going Borka?

“Progress has been very positive, but I would definitely like to see a larger geographic footprint for NeoGenesis. Some states are better than others. I would really like to have clinics in Sydney and Melbourne stock NeoGenesis. I receive a few requests from clients searching the internet asking for locations of clinics. Regional also needs a bit more coverage. I think talking about NeoGenesis and making it a household name will help Steve’s aspirations for the gifting program.”

What Clinics Are Saying About NeoGenesis

Yvonne from Charishma Beauty:

“I heard about NeoGenesis through Facebook. Therapists were achieving fantastic results for compromised and ageing skin, so I decided to try it out.”

Samantha is a cosmetic injector as well as skin professional.

“Our clients who have incorporated NeoGenesis into their skincare routines are absolutely thrilled with it! They’re noticing remarkable improvements, particularly with reactive skin conditions, and they’re over the moon about it! One client was so impressed that she reached out to NeoGenesis head office because she was amazed at how quickly it cleared up her dermatitis.”

Yvonne owns a clinic in regional NSW and is transitioning from traditional beauty to a medispa.

“My clients are in love with the products, they love the simplicity and results.”

Like most businesses, ensuring you have a balance of the right products and not focusing on one label can be an important business decision. Do you agree?

Skin Solutions Canberra:

“I believe so. Not every product range will cater to everyone or offer the best solutions for specific needs. NeoGenesis caught my attention because it complements the other products available in my clinic.

Samantha and Mel from Skin Solutions Canberra:

“We opted for NeoGenesis because I firmly believe that harnessing your own stem cells represents the future of skincare. NeoGenesis is grounded in evidence, supported by a wide array of clinical studies that validate its ability to rejuvenate and heal the skin. While some companies incorporate stem cells from sources like apples or other parts of the body in their skincare products, NeoGenesis stands out by formulating stem cell release molecules that stimulate the activation of your own stem cells for targeted repair. Leveraging our body’s innate familiarity, utilising our own stem cells for regeneration seems like the logical choice. Additionally, the remarkable outcomes NeoGenesis has achieved, even with challenging skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and rosacea, further solidified my decision.”

“My clinic is all about natural products, I stock Waterlily and NeoGenesis.

What would you say is the difference between NeoGenesis and the products you currently use?

Samantha and Mel:

“NeoGenesis is a simple cosmeceutical line renowned for its safety and efficacy and the only one we stock that offers a range of products focusing on stem cell release molecules. These products provide quick and effective solutions for difficult conditions like dermatitis and rosacea. NeoGenesis is highly recommended for use following invasive procedures. With a commitment to customer well-being and healing, our goal is to offer products that not only ensure safety postprocedure but also enhance recovery and results.”

Yvonne:

“NeoGenesis is easy to use, suitable for all skin types, with very little risk of irritation. I love how easy it is to sell, it just walks out the door.”

3 Reasons Why Hyaluronic Acid Is Not Making A Change In Your Clients’ Skin

TANEESA WILLIAMSON explains some common causes for underwhelming results.

Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is often touted as the holy grail of skincare ingredients, renowned for its hydrating properties and ability to give skin a plump, youthful appearance. However, not all clients see the transformative effects they expect. The secret lies in the molecular weight of the HA being used.

1. Penetration Power: The Molecular Weight Matters

The effectiveness of HA largely depends on its molecular weight. High molecular weight HA (HMW-HA) has larger molecules that sit on the skin’s surface, forming a hydrating barrier. This is ideal for immediate surface hydration, making the skin feel softer and smoother. However, it may not penetrate deeply enough to address underlying hydration needs or stimulate collagen production. In contrast, low molecular weight HA (LMW-HA) has smaller molecules that can penetrate deeper into the skin layers. This deeper absorption allows it to hydrate from within, improve skin elasticity, and reduce fine lines more effectively. If your clients are not seeing significant changes, it might be due to using HMWHA which is limited to surface-level hydration.

2. Moisture Retention vs. Lasting Hydration

While HMW-HA excels at drawing moisture to the skin’s surface, it might not provide longlasting hydration. This can be particularly

problematic for clients with dry or aging skin that requires moisture deep within the dermis. HMW-HA can give an initial plumping effect, but it doesn’t always sustain the hydration needed for long-term skin health.

LMW-HA, on the other hand, ensures that the deeper layers of the skin are adequately hydrated, contributing to long-term improvements in skin texture and appearance. By reaching deeper layers, LMW-HA can help maintain skin hydration over time, which is essential for clients looking for more than just a temporary fix.

3. Skin Barrier Function and Irritation

The skin barrier’s health is crucial for overall skin appearance and function. HMW-HA, while excellent for surface hydration, can sometimes disrupt the skin barrier if not formulated correctly, leading to irritation and dryness in some clients. This can counteract its hydrating benefits, leaving the skin in a worse condition than before.

LMW-HA, with its ability to penetrate deeper, tends to be more effective in reinforcing the skin barrier and improving its resilience. This helps in preventing moisture loss and protecting the skin from environmental stressors. For clients with sensitive skin, LMW-HA is often a better choice as it is less likely to cause surface irritation and more likely to provide the desired results without adverse effects.

For clients not experiencing the benefits of HA, the issue might lie in the molecular weight of the HA being used. High molecular weight HA offers surface hydration but may not penetrate deeply enough for lasting change, while low molecular weight HA provides deeper, more enduring hydration and skin improvement.

Innovative Skincare

NADINE DILONG sat down with Clinical Director of iS Clinical, DR CHARLENE DEHAVEN , to learn what makes the brand so successful.

Dr DeHaven, please tell us how you got into working with iS Clinical?

I’m boarded in internal medicine and a lifetime fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians. I got into anti ageing medicine when it was just sort of coming on, and I started a practice of my own. I had one of the first anti ageing practices in the United States in the late 1990s. There was a group of other people who were very well funded by a wealthy billionaire who wanted to do evidence based treatments in anti ageing medicine. They were very interested in this topic and essentially just gave us carte Blanc. I knew the cardiologist that was associated with them, and, long story short, my practice got absorbed into them.

We all became one group, and that’s where I met Brian Johns, the CEO of Innovative Skincare (iS Clinical), because he did the aesthetics part of that, and I did the internal medicine, the clinical part of that. And so, Brian and I kept in touch, and then he started Innovative Skincare with Alec Call. And they would seek my advice on ingredients and products. And it just grew from there.

I’m so fortunate. As Clinical Director, I used to go around the world and talk to people about science, and and the science behind our products, and we have such quality products. If we were one of those companies that watered ingredients down to make two cents more on this unit, I would have trouble with that, but it’s just not like that here, quality is paramount.

Dr DeHaven presents at NSS

What have some of iS Clinical’s innovations been that have changed the skincare industry?

The first big thing that we started was centered around advances in vitamin C technology. The first articles were published by a large group from Duke back in the 1980s I think. And that was the first time where the medical world really took notice and said, wow, here’s a real study that shows topical antioxidants, vitamin C and then later vitamin E, and they in combination can mitigate free radical damage in the skin. And that was revolutionary, but there were limitations to that technology. The pH had to be 3.5 or less, the concentration had to be 15 to 20% or else it just didn’t get absorbed. And that made formulating difficult, because there are a lot of ingredients you might want to use that work better at a pH of 4. So when we brought

Dr DeHaven with Nadine Dilong at NSS

our Advance+ vitamin C to market, that was a big push for a change in the vitamin C technology. It just blew those limitations out of the water, because you didn’t have to have a pH of 3.5 or less.

You could formulate with Advance+ between a pH of 2 and 11. The compound has such versatility. So that product was the first big thing brought to the aesthetics industry, and after that, we made some more advances in vitamin C technology. We brought another derivative. The Advance+ is water soluble. We began to use an ingredient which is lipid soluble. That’s another second generation vitamin C. More recently, we’ve combined vitamin C with a proprietary compound. But what it does is it hugely increases collagen synthesis.

The other thing we did that I really think did a big favour to consumers was when we brought our brightening complex and brightening serum to market, because prior to that time, hydroquinone had been the standard and that’s because it worked, but at a price, and there really was not a botanically based safe brightener that was in existence. Nobody developed one, and that those brightening products were our most difficult products to develop, because the skin wants to pigment. It’s like a defense mechanism, and so we brought forth Brightening Complex and Brightening Serum, which are botanically based, yet effective. There aren’t very many companies who are willing to go to the expense of the ingredients or the formulating science to get a botanically based face brightener.

Where does topical skincare have its limitations? Can results compare to treatments like lasers?

I think it takes both. A topical is different than a laser. A laser is different than a topical, but the best situation is when you marry them together, because they both tend to do good things and they potentiate each other. You combine the right laser and the right pre- and post treatment, topicals, and you can get a really good result that can keep improving that result, and that’s what you want. You don’t want to have a big, expensive procedure and then start to decline slowly but surely. You want to maintain that and in fact, even get it a little bit better. The Power of Regenerative Medicine

NADINE DILONG sat down with DR JEANNIE DEVEREAUX to discuss the true power of PRP.

Regenerative treatments are paving the way for a new standard of care. I had the privilege to sit down with PRP expert Dr Jeannie Devereaux, a pioneering figure deeply entrenched in the development and application of regenerative aesthetic treatments. With a fervour for enhancing skin health through advanced techniques, Dr Devereaux’s insights shed light on the transformative potential of these therapies.

A Paradigm Shift to Regenerative Medicine

Dr Devereaux’s journey is one rooted in the belief that true beauty emerges from within – literally. Specialising in regenerative medicine, her approach diverges from traditional cosmetic fixes like injectables. Instead, the focus is on harnessing the body’s natural healing mechanisms to rejuvenate and restore.

“At our clinics, we use a sophisticated system to deliver 10 billion platelets, billions of mononuclear cells, and about 100 billion exosomes directly into the skin,” Dr Devereaux explains. “This isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about optimising skin health over time.”

The Science Behind High-Dose PRP

Dr Devereaux emphasises that not all Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) treatments are created equal. “We’ve seen a lot of misconceptions about PRP in the market. Many products lack the concentration needed to stimulate stem cells effectively. PRP got a bit of a bad rep for a while, because what’s mostly used out there is cheap tubes, and they don’t have the concentration level for the dose levels to actually regenerate. There’s a certain dose that you must use for the stem cells to be stimulated. So that’s why we use the 10 billion dose, where the generic market out there is really under a billion, if they’re lucky,” she notes. Their proprietary EmCyte PurePRP, used exclusively in select clinics, ensures a high concentration of bioactive components crucial for skin regeneration.

The treatment works by drawing 55ml of blood. “It takes about a minute and a half for us to do that,” she explains, “That’s in an anticoagulant, and we have this special clinical disc within our kit, and that captures the high dose of the platelets, but more importantly, it also captures the high dose of the mononuclear cells, because they’re

equally as regenerative. And then the platelets have platelet derived exosomes, and the monocytes and the lymphocytes have exosomes as well.” The ‘liquid gold’ of platelets, mononuclear cells, and exosomes then gets injected into the area of the body that you want to treat and helps the skin regenerate itself.

While PRP is renowned for its efficacy in facial rejuvenation, Dr Devereaux highlights its versatility.

“We treat everything from thinning hair to severe alopecia,” she states. “Our approach isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about restoring scalp health, stimulating hair follicles, and achieving natural-looking results.”

In an industry often driven by quick fixes, Dr Devereaux advocates for informed consumerism.

“Patients need to ask about the dose of platelets used in their PRP treatments,” she advises. “It’s about ensuring they receive the optimal benefits from the procedure.”

PRP isn’t limited to anti-ageing treatments alone. Dr Devereaux explains its effectiveness in treating conditions like rosacea and acne. “We’ve seen remarkable results in clearing up these skin conditions. PRP’s ability to promote healing and reduce inflammation makes it a game-changer.”

The Future of Aesthetic Medicine

As our conversation draws to a close, Dr Devereaux reflects on the future of regenerative aesthetics. “It’s about integrating evidence-based practices into every treatment,” she asserts. “From musculoskeletal health to dermatological conditions, the potential for PRP and regenerative therapies is vast.”

Dr Devereaux’s passion for regenerative medicine underscores a significant shift in aesthetic practices—a movement towards treatments that prioritise long-term skin health and natural beauty. As practitioners and consumers alike become more informed, the demand for high-quality, evidence-based treatments like EmCyte PurePRP continues to grow. In a field where innovation meets artistry, Dr Devereaux and clinics like hers are leading the charge towards a future where aesthetic treatments not only enhance but also heal.

HydroPeptide Exclusively Partners with Professional Beauty Solutions

The peptide-powered skincare brand reveals new Australia and New Zealand distributor.

As experts in the science of skin aging, HydroPeptide offers professional skincare developed by geneticists and powered by patented peptide technology. Tested in treatment rooms worldwide, preferred by professionals, and backed by epigenetic research, the brand aims to improve skin function at a cellular level for results beyond the surface. It’s with that in mind, that aligning with Sydney-based Professional Beauty Solutions as the exclusive Australia and New Zealand distributors was a natural progression for 2024 and beyond.

“Australia and New Zealand are important markets for us, and we care deeply about the professionals who drive its success. United by a shared commitment to skincare professionals, we are dedicated to delivering extraordinary results in everything we do,” says Annette Rubin, HydroPeptide Chief Executive Officer.

As Australia’s most trusted distributor of professional beauty brands, Professional Beauty Solutions are proud to exclusively provide partners with a complete solution to skin health from the inside, out. With over 18 years in the Australian beauty industry, they are known for providing salons, spas and clinic partners with unmatched support, best-in-class products, and leading education, and HydroPeptide is a welcome addition for their 2000-plus partners.

Strengthening Professional Beauty Solutions’ portfolio of 16 brands (and counting), HydroPeptide will amplify their offering to consumers and their salon, spa and clinic partners, building confidence within their clientele with only world-class skincare products in a portfolio designed to enhance in-salon treatments and at-home care. “As the official distributor, we will forge meaningful and profitable relationships for HydroPeptide in the Australia and New Zealand market” say Founders, Matt and Lisa Williams.

Matching Rubin’s enthusiasm, Matt and Lisa add, “Here at Professional Beauty Solutions, we are delighted to add HydroPeptide to our stable of brands. The brand’s products, ethos and innovation speak to what our network of spas, salons and clinics across the country want and need. Professional Beauty Solutions strives to enrich lives through the power of skin health, encouraging both in-salon treatments and at-home aftercare. HydroPeptide’s products speak wholeheartedly to the power of skin health, thus such an organic partnership for PBS.”

HydroPeptide first launched in Australia in 2012 and can be found in premium day spas and clinics across Australia and globally. However, HydroPeptide’s partnership with Professional Beauty Solutions leads the brand into a new era for the Australia and New Zealand marketplace, bringing further availability of the brand and visibility for consumers through profound salon partnerships and ongoing education, assets and product stock to deliver seamlessly for this brand.

With over 15 years of experience in professional skincare, HydroPeptide have paved the way for creating clinically-proven, easyto-use products powered by peptides and crafted with epigenetics top of mind, tapping into this technology to take skin to the next level.

Understanding epigenetics is critical to the next-gen, quality skincare that HydroPeptide are producing, and fundamentally means working at a molecular level to influence genes to transform your skin by speaking to skin cells and changing their behaviour. Using epigenetic science, HydroPeptide create skin-transforming products to turn on the genes that signal cells to act healthy, while turning off the genes that don’t.

As the brand name suggests, peptides (along with other hero ingredients) combine as the catalyst to activating and deactivating these genes to positively affect skin. When signalled to act in a healthy way, your genes can be responsible for how your skin looks and feels, creating the healthiest version of you from the inside, out.

HydroPeptide boasts seven collections targeted to treat specific skin concerns, formulated with the expertise of doctors and scientists to ensure their approach is two-fold, clinical and sensorial, for clean and intelligent products that look and feel luxurious while providing visible results. But it’s not just about the formula or feel. While clinical and sensorial results are paramount to their product innovation, as is the eco-friendly, sustainable packaging that is rolling out from now until the end of the year, where all tubes will be made of at least 60% Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR) materials, all hard plastics will be at least 50% PCR, recyclable glass incorporated for droppers, moisturiser jars, and serum pumps and all unit cartons will be switched into FSC (Forest Stewardship Council)-certified recyclable paper. HydroPeptide also aims to remove 70% of all single-use sampling by early 2025 and provide refills on top-selling products by 2026. An American Perspective

At this year’s NSS, Nadine Dilong sat down with DR LINA VARGAS from Florida to chat all things patient safety, trends, and challenges.

Tell me a little bit about your clinic, Lumina, in Florida and what treatments you offer.

I’m a vascular surgeon by training, and I used to do the full spectrum of vascular surgery up until 2018 when I gave up arterial treatments. In pretty much the first year of my practice, which opened in 2018, we incorporated aesthetic treatments. So I mainly had patients who I was doing scleral therapy for cosmetic vein treatments, and they were wanting treatment for vascular lesions in other places of the body, under eye veins, the little cherry angiomas, little different vascular lesions here and there. So I found myself go out there and find a really nice platform to be able to do that, while also addressing issues like pigmentation, skin quality, skin texture, scarring. My first device was a Sciton laser, and it’s still one of my favourite devices for that indication.

And then slowly but surely, I started expanding into essentially everything else. My vision for my clinic was to be able to offer my clients, my patients, a comprehensive selection of all the treatments that they may be wanting, not only from the aesthetic standpoint, but wellness and body as well. So essentially, we offer pretty much everything at this point, which is just nice, because when we get a new client, the relationships that we want to build with them are lifelong and we don’t want to just do one thing and then have them have to go somewhere else to get those other treatments they’re after.

Do you feel people are open to comprehensive, holistic treatment plans?

They definitely appreciate it. I spend a lot of time during my initial consultation explaining ageing. Most of my patients are going through ageing, whether early in their 30s or 40s, starting to notice those initial wrinkles or maybe later, where they’re really noticing a lot of changes. And so when we address their specific concern, they’re going to be happy, but then most likely are going to start noticing other things. And so we want to show them what we’re capable of doing, so that they get that optimal result. Most people are actually on board with a comprehensive treatment that doesn’t stop where their specific concern goes.

What are laser regulations like in Florida? How do you ensure patient safety?

In the United States, it differs from state to state. But in general, laser and light devices can only be operated by a physician or a nurse practitioner or a physician assistant. Patient safety starts at the consultation. It’s all about education and about being very real with the patients, explaining the things that can possibly happen, even if they’re very rare, because if you explain that certain things are a part of the process, and not necessarily a side effect or a complication, then when patients are going through them, they perceive it as the treatment working. And this informed consent totally changes the dynamic. If a patient has to reach back out to you after the treatment saying things like ‘I wasn’t expecting this’, you have to calm them down, but if you had talked about that from the very beginning, then they’re not even concerned. They’re not going to call you. They know that it’s part of the process.

Also, just having very clear protocols and communication with everyone internally in my practice, who is performing the procedures that they are

trained and capable of doing. There are procedures that are thankfully very, very safe that essentially anyone can perform. But there are some other, specifically light and laser devices and injectables that require more experience. Safety always has to go first. And I always tell my patients I would much rather not get a result than hurt you or put you in a place where we didn’t want to be. It’s better to go very conservative that very first time, just see how the skin behaves, and then at that point you have a reference. You got the results you wanted. Just stick with those settings, those worked, and they were safe. If you didn’t necessarily get the results you wanted, that’s fine. Now you can maybe adjust a little bit, be a little bit more aggressive, but at the end of the day, it’s all about patient safety and not having complications or side effects as much as we can avoid them.

What would you say is a challenge for aesthetic practitioners at the moment?

I’m an international speaker, and I go to South America quite a bit. And actually there, the main issue is counterfeit devices and treatments. And now in the US, unfortunately it’s things like fake Botox coming from Asian countries, which is really, really scary. Because even though people should not play and not take risks when it comes to medical aesthetic treatments, people do go and find the cheapest thing. A lot of times, when they get these treatments that are not regulated, have not been studied, have not been proven for efficacy or safety, they can actually get hurt. And I thought we were sort of protected in the United States, but unfortunately, we do see that too.

Not long ago a place in Orlando was giving out free ‘Emsculpt’ sessions (when it clearly wasn’t a genuine Emsculpt machine) when they signed up for Semaglutide. Semaglutide is relatively cheap when you compare it with the body sculpting procedure. I mean, that should totally raise all red flags if they’re giving you the expensive treatment for free when you get the injection, the concept itself is interesting.

Unfortunately, people are always going to try to look for the cheaper alternative, and they’re going to find it cheap. I’m not going to lower my prices to compete so doing a lot of education into why this is an investment is probably one of the most important things, which is their health and their wellbeing. And this is not something that you should take risks with.

Have you been to the Non-Surgical Symposium before? What are you excited about?

This is my first time. I couldn’t wait to get here. I absolutely love it. Just being with the rest of the international and the national speakers and connecting with so many people, and learning, and I just love Australia. My only brother actually lives in Sydney, and we love the culture. I’m just very excited about all of the treatments being less and less invasive with less downtime, easier for the patients, easier for the providers, and just the way that we can combine them all to achieve that holistic result and approach. And I kind of like the fact that we’re moving away from fillers and just seeing that trend of more natural results.

Cosmetic Surgery in Australia: A Journey of Evolution and Innovation

DR

MICHAEL ZACHARIA shares a look back on his career and the evolution of cosmetic surgery.

From my early inspirations to the current trends shaping the industry, Australia has made transformative strides in the evolution of cosmetic surgery and aesthetic treatments. As a Sydney-based ENT Surgeon with over two decades of experience, I have had the privilege of witnessing this remarkable progress firsthand.

When I began my career, surgical procedures such as breast augmentation and facelifts were among the most sought-after treatments. These procedures were popular in many regions and still are today, particularly North America and Europe, where access to advanced surgical facilities and skilled practitioners were more prevalent. The number of facelifts performed increased approximately 6.6 times from 1990 to 2000* and breast augmentation surgeries have increased by 41% over the past 20 years**. Techniques varied, but common methods included silicone or saline implants for breast augmentation and traditional skin excision methods for facelifts. These surgeries were primarily accessible to those with the means to afford cosmetic enhancements, often leading to significant changes in a patient’s appearance and self-esteem.

A turning point in the 1990s

My training in Los Angeles exposed me to these techniques, highlighting their transformative potential. However, the late 1990s marked a turning point with the rise of non-surgical treatments, such as injectable fillers. This era saw a shift towards minimally invasive procedures that offered effective aesthetic improvements with minimal downtime, a trend that continues to evolve today.

Cosmetic injectables, approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration in 1996, and dermal fillers provided new options for patients seeking facial rejuvenation without the need for surgery. This shift was significant, with data showing a steady increase in the number of people opting for these treatments, from thousands in the early 2000s to millions annually by the 2020s. Over 6 million surgeries or treatments including cosmetic injectables are carried out annually, a 700% increase in just the last 20 years***.

The deep plane facelift

While traditional surgeries like rhinoplasty and breast augmentation remained popular, I noticed a growing interest in facial rejuvenation procedures such as brow lifts and advanced facelift techniques. The deep plane facelift, in particular, became a passion of mine, a procedure that not only restores youthfulness but also maintains natural facial expressions and

“...my focus remains on advanced facelift surgery, where I combine technical expertise with a keen eye for natural aesthetics.”

contours. At my clinic in Sydney, approximately 40% of patients inquire about different types of facelifts, with a significant portion opting for the deep plane method due to its longlasting and natural results.

Today, my focus remains on advanced facelift surgery, where I combine technical expertise with a keen eye for natural aesthetics. Facelift procedures allow me to address the comprehensive aspects of facial ageing, from the forehead to the neck. The satisfaction of seeing patients regain their confidence through subtle, yet impactful enhancements is immensely rewarding.

Modern facelift techniques encompass a range of approaches tailored to individual patient needs and aesthetic goals. These include a facelift, deep plane facelift, mini facelift, and mid facelift. A traditional facelift primarily addresses sagging skin and muscles in the lower face and neck, providing a more youthful and refreshed appearance. The deep plane facelift, considered the gold standard by many, involves lifting and repositioning the deeper tissues of the face, producing a more significant and enduring rejuvenation. Mini facelifts offer less invasive options with shorter recovery times, targeting specific areas such as the mid face or jowls. The mid facelift focuses specifically on rejuvenating the middle third of the face, addressing sagging and volume loss in the cheeks and under eye area. Each technique involves meticulous dissection and repositioning of tissues to restore youthful contours while maintaining natural facial expressions.

The

importance of targeting deeper facial layers

Facelift techniques have evolved significantly since their inception in the early 20th century. Initially, facelifts primarily focused on skin tightening, which often led to an unnatural, ‘windswept’ appearance. As understanding of facial anatomy improved, surgeons began to target deeper tissue layers, moving beyond the traditional facelift, which primarily addressed skin and superficial muscles. The deep plane facelift, introduced in the 1990s, advanced this approach by repositioning the deeper layers of facial tissue without relying solely on skin tension, producing more natural and lasting results. Over the years, minimally invasive techniques and advanced technologies, such as endoscopic methods, have further refined facelift procedures, leading to the development of the midfacelift and mini facelift. These innovations have reduced recovery times and improved outcomes by targeting specific areas with precision and less invasive methods.

The evolution of facelift techniques has been driven by the desire for more natural results, reduced recovery times, and enhanced patient safety. Early facelifts, which focused mainly on skin tightening, often led to short-lived results and a tell-tale operated look. As patients sought more subtle and lasting rejuvenation, surgeons needed to address the underlying structures of the face rather than just the superficial layers. Advances in medical knowledge, surgical techniques, and technology have enabled this deeper, more anatomical approach. Additionally, the increasing demand for minimally invasive procedures with shorter downtimes has spurred the development of techniques that provide significant results with less disruption to patients’ lives. These advancements have also improved the ability to customise treatments to individual patient needs, further enhancing satisfaction.

The future includes regenerative medicine

The future of facelift techniques lies in the integration of regenerative medicine, advanced imaging technologies and personalised approaches. Stem cell therapies and fat grafting are expected to play a more prominent role, using the body’s own regenerative capabilities to enhance facial rejuvenation. The new and innovative NeoGen Plasma Skin Regeneration procedure offered by my clinic utilises advanced plasma energy to treat various skin concerns. It works by creating controlled thermal energy that targets deep layers of the skin, promoting collagen production and tightening. This non-invasive treatment aims to improve skin texture, reduce fine lines, and enhance overall skin quality without the downtime associated with traditional surgery. NeoGen is suitable for addressing wrinkles, scars and uneven skin tone, offering a rejuvenated appearance with minimal discomfort and quick recovery.

Advanced imaging and AI technology will also enable more precise planning and execution of procedures, tailored to each patient’s unique anatomy. Minimally invasive techniques will continue to evolve, offering significant results with even less downtime. Additionally, the combination of surgical and non-surgical treatments, such as combining facelifts with laser resurfacing or injectable treatments, will provide more comprehensive and customisable rejuvenation options. Ultimately, the goal will be to achieve natural, long-lasting results with the highest levels of safety and patient satisfaction.

“Advanced imaging and AI technology will also enable more precise planning and execution of procedures...”

Tailoring treatments to individual needs

However, I firmly believe that the artistry of cosmetic surgery lies in understanding the nuances of facial aesthetics and tailoring treatments to individual needs. Personalised approaches and regenerative techniques like fat transfer will likely shape the future, offering patients more natural and long-lasting results. A fat transfer, also known as fat grafting, involves removing fat from areas of the body with excess fat, such as the abdomen or thighs, and injecting it into areas needing volume, such as the face. This procedure aims to restore youthful contours, enhance facial features, and improve skin quality through the natural regenerative properties of fat cells. Fat transfer offers a minimally invasive option with longlasting results, using the patient’s tissue to achieve a natural and rejuvenated appearance.

As the field continues to evolve, I am excited to embrace new innovations. With advancements in technology and techniques, the future of cosmetic surgery in Australia holds tremendous promise. I envision a landscape where personalised care meets cutting-edge innovation, where every procedure is meticulously tailored to enhance natural beauty and restore youthful vitality. The journey of cosmetic surgery is one of continuous evolution, and I am honoured to be a part of shaping its future in Australia and beyond.

Do We Need To ‘Rewild’ Our Skin Microbiome?

TREVOR STEYN explains the concept of rewilding.

Rewilding is the science of returning skin to its balanced, natural state through biotechnology.

Our skin is an ecosystem protected by a living armour of beneficial bacteria and modern skincare products often strip these beneficial microbes. The use of pre and probiotics on the skin can restore and rebalance your microbiome for optimal skin health, creating the environment for your natural microbial diversity to return, and strengthening your skin barrier.

What threats to the microbiome can cause acne?

Acne is a complex condition with varied causes, some common threats to the microbiome that can cause acne include:

1. Unnecessary over cleansing that can strip the skin’s microbiome of healthy bacteria and reduce the quality of sebum.

2. The use of harsh surfactants and abrasive exfoliators which can damage an already vulnerable skin barrier, leading to additional inflammation.

3. A lack of diversity within the microbiome which allows opportunistic, acne-causing bacteria to thrive.

How can we start the rewilding process?

Addressing skin issues such as acne and restoring the skin’s microbiome requires a holistic approach. The skin can be brought back into balance by restoring normal populations of skin’s microbes through quality oral probiotic supplement with topical, live probiotics to outcompete the acne causing species. Search for products that have a balanced pH of 4.5 to maintain a healthy acid mantle. Products containing live probiotics such as Lactobacillus, which promotes the restoration of skin barrier function, are also beneficial. Esse’s Clarifying Range is a professional line that was

formulated to address the root causes of acne while also improving the appearance of it, with soothing and balancing ingredients such as Bakuchiol, Provitamin D, and a live Lactobacillus blend.

dermalogica pro introduces new luminfusion service

Dermalogica PRO’s new LuminFusion is an advanced service that draws on the use of Dermalogica’s professional grade exfoliants and masques along with Dermalogica’s new PRO Pen device to reveal smoother, more radiant, glass-like skin.

The Luminfusion starts with the brands award winning PreCleanse, an oil-based cleanser that dissolves makeup, dirt and debris from the skin, followed by a Face Mapping skin analysis to accurately assess the clients skin concerns. Daily Glycolic Cleanser is then worked over the skin to increase brightening and remove buildup caused by environmental factors.

The client then receives a Multivitamin Retinol Peel. This unique oil-based peel is packed with retinol, salicylic acid, and lactic acid that offers an advanced level of exfoliation and helps to remove dulling, discoloured skin cells. Nanoinfusion is then performed with Dermalogica’s PRO Pen over the top of the peel, helping to support ingredient penetration as well as amplifying skin resurfacing.

So, what is nanoinfusion?

Nanoinfusion goes by various names such as microexfoliation, nano resurfacing, or nano exfoliation. It is a non-invasive procedure that involves the use of a pen style tool and nano-tips instead of needles. When nanoinfusing, instead of using microneedles, nano-tips are used. These microscopic hair-like cones made from silicon or stainless steel, are smaller than a strand of human hair. These tips do not penetrate the skin but help with resurfacing and product infusion. The benefits are many as this type of service helps to increase circulation and encourage cell turnover. The client’s primary concern will determine the serum selected for use during the service.

The Dermalogica PRO Pen has been designed to meet high specifications and expectations, it’s construction following medical grade standards to choose material, manufacturing methods and sterilization. We worked with skin therapists around the world and studied what pens and techniques they use to unlock the best results. This allowed us to develop a unique nanoinfusion pen with precision, versatility and safety.

Dermalogica’s PRO Pen is extremely cost effective, making it an affordable device and the competitive pricing of our cartridges equals more profit for therapists.

As a final layer of exfoliation, the peel is removed with a frothy application of Daily Microfoliant, a rice-based enzyme powder instantly revealing visibly brighter skin only halfway through the service.

Once the peel has been removed from the skin, the client is then prepped for red light therapy (LED) to support the skin’s repair process. Dermalogica’s professional-only Light Energy Masque is applied to the skin prior to the red LED therapy to work synergistically with LED and amplify the service results.

The masque is removed once the LED is complete, instantly revealing smoother, more radiant skin. To complete the service the client receives a final application of antioxidants to protect from environmental pollution, a vitamin C eye serum to hydrate and smooth fine lines and a multi-purpose moisturizer with SPF50 to increase hydration and protect the skin, while maintaining that radiant post service glow.

Luminfusion by Dermalogica PRO is a 45-minute advanced skin treatment using Dermalogica PRO’s unique innovative products and ingredients alongside brand-new device technology.

Luminfusion is launching in clinics nationally from August 2024. For more information, contact your local Dermalogica representative, call us on 1800-659-118 or visit dermalogica.com.au/pro.

Drifting AWAY

Sydney’s new AWAY Spa at the W Hotel knows how to impress, writes NADINE

If you know me, you know I love W Hotels. I have been lucky to stay at quite a few of them and experience their AWAY Spas, so I was very excited when it was announced that, after Brisbane and Melbourne, it was finally Sydney’s turn to get one. Cue Covid and a few other challenges that made the opening date get pushed back again and again, late last year, W Sydney finally opened its quirky doors.

The AWAY Spa sits on level 2 of the hotel and is an interior design dream. The W brand is known for its eclectic, colourful, and sometimes almost over the top design, but AWAY Spa Sydney got the balance between quirky and elegance right. Next to the reception desk you can find the most beautiful terracotta coloured mani/pedi booths that make the perfect location for a friend get-together or a bridal party.

After I enjoy a delicious welcome drink and fill out my consultation form (5 stars for including a question about what size robe you would prefer!), I get a quick tour of the facilities. The waiting area is moody and dark in hues of blue and purple, the post-treatment area includes a variety of drinks and snacks and comfortable pods to relax in, and then there is also a steam room, sauna, and experience showers, which are not for the faint-hearted as the push of a button

“The AWAY Spa sits on level 2 of the hotel and is an interior design dream. The W brand is known for its eclectic, colourful, and sometimes almost over the top design, but AWAY Spa Sydney got the balance between quirky and elegance right”

releases cold water from the top, akin to an ice bucket challenge (not today for me, thank you).

My beautiful therapist Dorcas guides me to the very generous treatment room with my own bathroom, and explains the Quench treatment to me which I am about to have. A pregnancy-safe (I am 17 weeks at the time of writing this) body scrub, massage, and mini facial using Comfort Zone products. Everything at this spa is lush – the bedding, the robe, the bed itself, it’s all very comfortable and so I enjoy 90 minutes of bliss. Dorcas applies the scrub to my back, arms, legs, and décolletage, and explains that it has soft grains for a manual exfoliation, but also works as a chemical exfoliation, so we leave the product on while Dorcas continues with my facial. After a thorough cleanse, she uses two ice cold globes to give a cryo facial, which stimulates blood circulation and feels very refreshing. This is followed by a deeply nourishing moisturiser, and face and scalp massage.

Dorcas prepares the shower for me with a set of fresh towels and robe, and guides me to the bathroom to shower off the scrub. When I return to the treatment bed, everything’s cleaned as if I had never been there – the spa magic! I lay on my side and receive a back and neck massage using the Comfort Zone Tranquility Oil, a blend containing amaranth oil, grape oil, rose and vanilla oils and vitamin E. I love that its smell is quite subtle and not overpowering. My treatment ends with another quick facial massage.

Dorcas leads me to the relaxation pods where the most thoughtful variety of post-treatment treats awaits me. Non-alcoholic champagne, herbal tea, and vegan chocolates and mint coconut bars made by a Sydney-based baker, Dorcas tells me. They’ve also included a Beysis nail polish for me to take home, which has the exact same shade of mint as the mint coconut bar – not sure if intentional or not, but I love it. I relax and enjoy my treats for a while, before checking out the pool on the 29th floor, which is only accessible to hotel guests and spa guests who have booked a 60-minute or longer treatment. The view over Sydney is stunning. I will be back, no doubt.

BODHI Spas & KNESKO Skin

A harmonious partnership in holistic wellness.

new multi-location partnership.

Tania Taylor and her husband Danny began BODHI Wellness Spas in WA in 2007, garnering national recognition for their commitment to creating a place that encourages guests to take a pause and provide an oasis of calm and escape from the busy-ness of life – naturally. BODHI was the first of its kind, pioneering a

holistic, nurturing offering, with exceptional customer care, and an approach to wellness that was approachable, unpretentious, nurturing and restorative.

Similarly inspired by the same connection to the ever-present need for a natural, holistic approach to self-care, celebrity aesthetician and Perth’s own, Lejla Cas moved to Los Angeles from Perth in 2007 to start up a skincare studio that holistically featured chakra balancing, Reiki-charged facial treatments that quickly gained recognition from celebrities like Jessica Alba, Lady Gaga, as well as the Hilton and Kardashian families.

Lejla co-founded KNESKO in 2012 with her husband, Sean; ever since then the brand has been championed by aestheticians, makeup artists, and dermal therapists throughout the top luxury spas and resorts worldwide. KNESKO’s holistic approach to beauty resonates with the ever-growing desire for an exceptional guest experience that keeps efficacy and wellness at top of mind.

Today KNESKO is known for enhancing spa treatments with luxurious collagen masks and targeted serums to address every skin concern, and is now available at BODHI Spas to enhance treatments and for retail purchase nationwide.

BODHI Co-Founder Tania Taylor
KNESKO Founder Lejla Cas

Two visions aligned

The two female founders’ commonality brought them together to forge a partnership that highlights the best of both brands. In fact, they are both inspired by the need for women to take more time for themselves.

“Over 90% of our guests are women, often carers and nurturers themselves, and they need nurturing too. I believe spa provides a space for unconditional nurturing, some time to connect to self, deep soul-care; that we all need in this increasingly hectic world,” says BODHI Co-Founder Tania Taylor.

Similarly, Lejla created KNESKO Skin after working with thousands of women and realising that there was a common thread between them all: the need to slow down in a busy world and take more time for intentional self care. KNESKO was born out of that need to help customers relax the mind, rebalance the spirit, and rejuvenate the skin with the highest quality ingredients possible.

BODHI’s vision for expanding their reach is another parallel between the brands with six wellbeing destinations, more in the pipeline, as well as attracting partnerships with Qantas and The Marriott Group. With KNESKO’s current global reach and their recent acquisition of their warehouse in Perth, WA and the establishment of their company in Australia, both brands are reaching more people with their multi-faceted approach to well-being. As Tania Taylor describes, ”There’s definitely a demand for luxurious soul-care… both nationally and internationally.”

The perfect fit

When asked why KNESKO was a fit for her vision for BODHI, Tania explained, “The BODHI and KNESKO brand philosophies are closely aligned. The gem-infused, high vibrational KNESKO skincare seamlessly complements BODHI’s luxurious, holistic, natural spa offering. Like BODHI, we love that KNESKO is run by a husband and wife team, and that Founder Lejla Cas is from BODHI’s home town Perth so she really gets our market and offering.

“A Reiki master herself, Lejla supercharges every KNESKO product with loving, healing, and balancing Reiki energy. Paired with BODHI skin and soul care therapies, this adds a unique new dimension to our spa offering,” Tania concludes.

“When I met Tania, I instantly felt that we would work together one day,” says Lejla. “I love the BODHI philosophy and the synergy between our brands. The BODHI approach to spa is experiential and embodies total well-

being, which has been my approach from the start with KNESKO, so I could not imagine a better fit for a partnership. Being from Perth, I felt especially passionate about bringing KNESKO and BODHI together, so to see this realised is a dream come true.”

BODHI Spas has officially launched their KNESKO collagen treatment enhancements across their menu as well as offering KNESKO retail for purchase at checkout to invite Reiki-charged, chakra balancing self care rituals at home.

KNESKO is a gem-infused, highvibrational skincare brand founded by

Making Wellness Exclusive But Social

The members only wellness club Saint Haven is opening several new locations this year. We speak with Founder TIM GURNER about its

successful concept.

Tim, why do you think Saint Haven has been such a success?

The success of Saint Haven has been truly humbling and is driving us to keep evolving our service, treatment and modality offering as we strive to create a unique experience for our members that isn’t available anywhere else in the country. One of the biggest pieces of feedback we get from our members is that they have never had a place to call their second home where they can escape the craziness of life and surrender with like-minded people.

Our members spend 3-8 hours a day in the club training, eating, working, connecting and relaxing with their shoes off and tracksuit pants on – it truly is their second home. And the attention to detail, the integrated, personalised, data-informed health approach and the ability to spend a whole day within the club to train, work, rest, re-fuel and recover – removes the need for multiple memberships and needless travel time.

What is your background in wellness/wellbeing/longevity?

My wife says that property and design are my passions and wellness is my obsession and it has been since I was about 15 when I started training. My first business was a gym when I was 19 years old, and ever since then I have been lucky enough to work with some incredible health, performance and mindfulness mentors. When I was going through a particularly challenging time in my property career, I engaged performance coach Nam Baldwin and his approach was to train my mind and body as if I was training for an elite sporting event. We introduced breathwork, mindfulness and specific training modalities into my routine alongside science-based modalities like PEMF Mat and Red-Light Therapy.

The creation of Saint Haven was actually a selfish one to create a place I could see friends and like-minded people in a time-efficient way. A place where I

Saint Haven Founder Tim Gurner

could train, socialise, recover and surrender to life without the outside pressures of work, family and life. I am time poor so wanted to find a way to be able to combine everything in one place.

How did you manage to sell out memberships before opening?

Initially we did one single media interview to introduce the brand and I think people really connected with the story as everyone has similar challenges and there are not many places that help us deal with them.

So we had a huge amount of enquiry from that and then word of mouth was the biggest driver for memberships, and we were blown away to reach over-subscribed prior to opening the doors. We now have over 15,000 people on our waitlist across Australia.

Please explain the social aspect of Saint Haven and why it is so important?

I am a good example. I never get the time I want to be able to connect with friends and family. I am now in the club 3-4 times a week. I train with my longest standing friend on a Wednesday morning who I saw maybe once every three months before, I bump into family and friends in the sauna, or at the bar and we connect in a way I just have never been able to before with life being so busy.

We are also increasingly understanding the link between loneliness, depression and health. Social connection is critical for our health and happiness and is one of the biggest factors in creating the Saint Haven offering. Many of our members have become friends, mentors, even business partners, and we create events and off-site retreats to reinforce this pillar amongst our community.

What are the most popular treatments/experiences at Saint Haven?

Will the new locations be different from the first one?

Toorak is our first Saint Haven Black club, which is the highest level of the brand and offers a more medical and personalised focus. South Yarra will be a signature Saint Haven location and has all the same DNA and ingredients of Collingwood but with a completely different design and feel. They are all in the same family but slightly different all based on their location.

Without a doubt, our signature Fire & Ice breathwork classes, which involves guided breathwork between our sauna and 6-degree mineral ice bath is one of our most popular treatments. Interestingly Sound Healing is also becoming incredibly popular as it offers a very cathartic spiritual experience that people are embracing.

Our full-body NOVOTHOR red light therapy treatment is also always booked out weeks in advance, due to the unbeatable anti-ageing and cellular regeneration properties.

Why did you choose Melbourne as its first location, and where will you open up next and why?

Well, in a way, selfishly so Aimee and I could enjoy it first! But of course Melbourne made sense for our initial club location as our head office is in Melbourne and our design team and I were meticulously involved in every single detail of the club’s creation. We now have three sites either open or under construction in Melbourne and will turn our attention to Sydney and Queensland next, before looking further abroad to LA and other global outposts. Ideally, we’d look to have 10 – 15 clubs globally by 2030.

How often do Saint Haven members usually come in?

It’s really interesting as most are in 3-7 days per week because they may train 2-3 days per week, recover 2-3 days, and use the co-work and restaurant for entertaining. It is not uncommon to see someone there at 6am and they will still be there for a meeting at 4pm. Our café has two bookable, soundproof phone booths which can be used for private phone calls and zoom meetings so our members really can be here all day for work, leisure, nourishment, training and recovery.

Please tell me about your collaboration with James Vivian.

James Vivian is one of Australia’s most in-demand facialists and we were very keen to collaborate with him and offer our members a hand-picked menu of his signature facials to give our members even more efficiency of time. We worked with James to create a series of exclusive treatments that can be enhanced with some of the other offerings at Saint Haven like Cryotherapy.

Our Saint Haven x James Vivian menu has been curated to provide the best in customer care, technology and age management results whilst ensuring a relaxing, caring and no-downtime response for skin that looks and feels instantly refreshed and enhanced.

Why is a signature scent important and what was the process of creating one like?

A lot of our members talk about turning the corner outside and getting the hint of our scent and they are already transformed to a new person. The entry experience for our members was an important part of the brief when creating Saint Haven.

Walking through the glass doors and passing through the threshold before opening the second set of doors signifies physically leaving your day behind, and entering a sacred space which is serene, calm and memorable. Scent is such an important part of our sensory experience as humans, so it was crucial for us to include a signature scent that in essence signals to our members’ nervous systems that they have arrived.  To learn more about Saint Haven, visit sainthaven.com.au

Renders of the new South Yarra location

The Future Of Residential Wellness

Every detail of the new Drift Residences on the Gold Coast has been planned to increase people’s wellness.

It’s incredible to think that the term ‘wellness architecture’ would have prompted confused faces and lots of questions just 10 years ago, but now, it’s becoming the new norm for many developers and wellness enthusiasts alike who are looking for more than simple buildings with four walls and a roof to live under. They’re looking to live healthy lives every day and know the importance of their surroundings.

According to Kate Ockwell, Associate and interior design lead at Plus Architecture, wellness architecture is on the rise. Fast becoming a musthave in boutique residential design following increased popularity during the pandemic, Kate says the demand for exclusive health and wellness amenities is here to stay.

“The ability to replicate premium health and wellness spaces at home through thoughtful design is what defines private residential oases that truly stand out in the market,” Kate says.

Plus Architecture’s design for the Drift Residences, a collection of 50 boutique residences on the Gold Coast’s Main Beach, exemplifies this philosophy. A standout in the international architecture practice’s premium residential portfolio, every detail of Drift has been meticulously designed to curate an unparalleled, wellness-focussed way of living that befits the coastal location.

“Our vision is most fully realised in Drift’s recreational areas, which include a private wellness sanctuary, the Wellbeing Centre. With exclusive access to these facilities, residents can indulge in the luxury of a spa experience in the comfort of their own home,” Kate says.

Creating luxurious wellness spaces demands a holistic approach attuned to the sensory experience. Kate highlights three principles driving Drift Residences’ design:

Materiality

“We know residents expect quality textures and finishes. From the very start, our focus was providing an exquisite tactile experience,” explains Kate.

This approach yields spaces reminiscent of premier vacation destinations. The poolside walkways, clad in roughly textured paving, evoke the feeling of traversing over natural rock formations, akin to a secluded waterfall setting.

Kate Ockwell, Associate and interior design lead at Plus Architecture

Warm, natural materials and bespoke cladding immerse one in an organic environment, while plush upholstered furnishings and warm-toned treatment rooms create cozy sanctuaries supporting deep relaxation.

Zoning

Kate notes that thoughtfully considering how, and in which succession, spaces will be experienced has been pivotal: “Establishing thresholds and transitional zones is critical to creating areas of decompression.”

At Drift Residences, this is exemplified by a sensory, arched entry passage residents transition through unveiling the Wellbeing Centre – an airy expanse suffused with ethereal natural light. A distinct shift in acoustics further denotes the transition, with the soothing murmurs of a cascading waterfall enveloping those who pause beneath its flow. The zones within the wellness precinct are carefully separated, ensuring each area is entered with purposeful intention. The secluded spa relaxation lounge, offering both private and communal treatment rooms, remains cloistered from the yoga deck, replete with sauna and steam rooms, which are in turn distanced from the pool facilities encompassing mineral pools, a cold plunge, and more.

Incorporating nature

Natural environments inherently engender cues for relaxation, nurturing our holistic well-being.

“Throughout the design, we have curated an oasis of planting that thrives in tropical climates,” says Kate. Eschewing the manicured look, lush planting is seamlessly interspersed amongst the sunken lounges and daybeds, extending onto the terraces to forge an inviting, calming sanctuary.

With natural air-purifying qualities, the planting, which includes cascading vines, serves to soften the architecture’s lines, while vibrant floral accents and variegated foliage introduce visual dynamism.

With affluent buyers demanding far more than just luxury homes, a higher calibre of living experience is expected. Skilfully blending premium materials, thoughtful spatial planning, and the integration of nature can realise a deeply sensory and restorative environment. With rising demand for amenities that support remediation therapies, including salt rooms, and even snow rooms, for those seeking the pinnacle of beachside living, design studios like Plus Architecture are setting a new benchmark for what’s achievable.

• Natural ventilation: We have architecturally designed these residences to allow for cross breezes and the ability for residents to naturally ventilate their homes, ensuring fresh air circulation and a healthy indoor environment.

• Double shower rails + rain heads and freestanding bath spouts within the master ensuites: These design elements encourage relaxation and indulgence, offering residents a spa-like experience within their own home.

“Throughout the design, we have curated an oasis of planting that thrives in tropical climates”

But it’s not just common areas that need to support the residents’ healthy lifestyle, people are also looking to create wellbeing havens within their apartments and houses. Plus Architecture have incorporated the following to enhance residents’ wellness:

• Timber look finishes to joinery and engineered timber flooring throughout the living areas: These finishes have been purposely chosen to provide a connection to nature, fostering a sense of calm and grounding for the residents.

• Colour theory - light palette: We have utilised light colours to create a refreshing and invigorating atmosphere, promoting mental clarity and positivity within the home environment.

• Travertine look tiles in bathrooms: Elevates the bathroom aesthetic with a natural and timeless appeal, enhancing the overall sense of serenity and luxury.

• Natural lighting: We have used full height glazing to maximise the amount of natural light filtering into each of the spaces, to reduce reliance on artificial lighting and boost mood and energy levels.

• Low VOC paints: Minimises harmful emissions, contributing to better indoor air quality and overall respiratory health for residents.

• Natural stone benchtops: These add a touch of luxury whilst still being durable and easy to maintain, promoting a sense of refinement and quality living.

• Curved walls and shapes: Curves are often associated with flow and ease of movement throughout a space, creating a harmonious and organic environment that reduces stress.

• Integrated fireplaces within the penthouses: Provides warmth, ambiance, and a focal point for gathering, fostering a cozy and comforting atmosphere for residents to relax and socialise. Drift Residences is currently under construction and due for completion in 2025.

Launching Your Dream Wellness Business

TOvercoming common hurdles as an entrepreneur according to SAMANTHA DUNN.

hinking about starting your own spa or wellness business? You’re not alone. Wellness is booming, and opportunities continue to blossom as the industry grows and diversifies. But let’s face it – taking the leap can be daunting. We recently surveyed over 70 aspiring entrepreneurs to discover what’s holding them back. Here’s a look at some of the common challenges you might face and how to tackle them with confidence.

‘Can I afford it?’

First off, the biggie: money. The number one question we get asked as consultants is, “how much will it cost?”. Sadly, there is no easy answer. You first have to design your business model and then cost it. A better way may be to set a budget and then value engineer the business to work within that. While it’s tempting to start with all the bells and whistles, it’s often wise to start small, be smart with your spending, and invest in upgrades as your business gains traction. Also, stretch your budget by looking into creative funding options like crowdfunding or pre-sales.

‘Where do I start?’

So, you’ve got this amazing idea, but now what? Almost half of survey respondents felt stumped as to how to get started – not knowing what to do, or how to do it. The temptation is to start with visible elements such as logos or interior design, however the secret is to start with strategy. You need a solid plan. Sketch out your vision, set clear goals, and define your unique selling points. Next, identify your target customers and the menu of services needed to satisfy them. From here, it is easier to create a roadmap to safely navigate the startup jungle.

‘How can I stand out and attract my customers?’

This is a major concern for over one third of respondents, and with good reason. With ‘wellness’ popping up on every street corner, standing out can be tough. Finding your niche is key. What makes your business unique? Once again, the answer is grounded in strategy. Differentiating your business starts with market research, from which you craft your unique selling points (USPs). By consistently applying your USPs through every aspect of your business, you can create a strong, unique brand that will attract your tribe.

Other Challenges

Other fears and concerns included:

• Lack of experience – either in Wellness or in business ownership. That’s a natural fear, but remember; everyone starts somewhere. The Wellness industry is welcoming, so dive in and soak up knowledge. Mentorships, groups, associations, conferences and online courses can be your stepping stones to success.

• Lack of clarity – surprisingly 10% of respondents knew they wanted to start a wellness business, but weren’t clear on what they want to do, why they want to do it, or what ‘success’ would look like. The danger with this lack of clarity is that a lot of time and money is wasted in finding your path, resulting in many businesses failing to launch altogether.

• Fear of failure – starting a business is risky, and fear of failure can paralyse the best of us, but it’s part of the entrepreneurial game. The key is to ‘know thyself’. Are you a risk taker or do you need more safety? If the latter, mitigate risk by collaborating with consultants or established brands to leverage their knowledge and experience.

• Fear of the unknown – almost one third of survey respondents worried about the risk inherent in “I don’t know what I don’t know”. Building a trusted team is crucial, including legal and financial advisors, and specialists in key areas such as branding and digital marketing. Success is a team sport, so don’t feel that you have to go it alone. Starting a wellness business can and should be exciting. Embrace the challenges, leverage the resources at your disposal, and seek help when needed. With passion, planning, persistence and just a bit of courage, you can turn your wellness dream into a flourishing reality.

Retreatment Botanics Partners With W’s AWAY Spa

Bringing clean cosmeceuticals to Brisbane’s popular spa destination.

Australian made skincare brand Retreatment Botanics has just launched in one of Australia’s most popular spas, AWAY Spa at W Brisbane. The certified palm oil-free range of cosmeceutical spa products is now available at AWAY Spa, with exclusive treatments specifically developed for this exciting partnership. We talk to AWAY Spa Manager, Yumi Kwan and Retreatment Botanics Founder, Trudi Jaye to learn more.

Yumi, why did you decide to bring Retreatment Botanics on board?

Retreatment Botanics skincare uses the beauty and power of Australian ingredients and the highest efficacy from the entire cell-matrix of Australian botanicals, which empowers AWAY Spa to lead the way in sustainability by offering clean, palm-oil free skincare, minimising harm and impact to the environment. Retreatment Botanics & AWAY Spa have developed a unique, exclusive experience that evokes the local beauty, botanicals and essence of Brisbane.

What ‘gap’ does it fill at AWAY Spa?

instantly transform the guests’ skin and it truly is where our skincare comes alive.

When exploring new Spa partnerships, I’m always excited by a mutual love and passion for active botanical skincare and the incredible results they deliver to the skin. I also love when spas are eager to step outside of the box and work with us to create a unique and transformative experience.

What made AWAY Spa at W Brisbane the perfect fit?

AWAY Spa offers Comfort Zone, which is from Italy, and we wished to have an Australian brand (especially with Australian native botanicals) to support the sustainability aspect.

What has working with Trudi and the RB team been like?

Trudi and her team are truly passionate, attentive and supportive. They always listen to what we need and accommodate our requests.

What is your favourite RB product and why?

That is difficult to choose as I enjoy most of the products, but my favourite RB product is the Kakadu Brightening Serum, which targets my hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone.

Trudi, what do you look for in a spa when deciding who to partner with?

It brings so much joy seeing our skincare, that was meticulously formulated for professional treatments, come to life in prestigious spas, clinics and wellness spaces.

From day one, we’ve set-out to provide science-backed, performance first formulations to

AWAY Spa shared a mutual admiration for creating an immersive experience of only the highest calibre to align with their world-class spa offering. From their first experience of Retreatment Botanics, they fell in love with the luxurious, sensorial journey that the products evoke and the age-defying, restorative and powerful benefits they deliver to the skin.

What treatments did you develop for the spa?

After immersing myself into the W Hotel and the AWAY Spa 2.0 briefing, I was so inspired to create an exclusive treatment that celebrated their passion and honouring of the local environment. In the area surrounding the W Hotel, Native Caviar Lime grows in abundance and it’s an incredible collagen-boosting ingredient that I love.

So, my team of therapists and I curated their signature BRIGHTEN facial, and the body treatment, massage & facial package called GOLDEN GLOW, featuring the Vitamin C rich Caviar Lime as an active infusion with a 24k Gold Masque to further enhance the experience and benefits to the skin.

This facial is the super-hydrator of all facials and revitalises even the most dull & tired skin while targeting pigmentation, for a visibly brighter and more plump complexion.

In A Higher State

Frequent flyers can now enjoy a slice of wellness at Melbourne airport.

Melbourne Airport’s first health club and wellness centre, Higher State, has opened its doors to guests. Within easy walking distance from Terminal 4, Higher State is located within Melbourne Airport’s brand-new, duel-branded Novotel and ibis Styles hotels and offers weary travellers, hotel guests, airport staff and local community residents a convenient and elevated wellness offering unlike anything seen before at Melbourne Airport.

The health club and wellness centre buzzed with activity as the first guests – including former AFLW footballer and seven network commentator Abbey Holmes – enjoyed all the space has to offer. The 24/7 health club and wellness centre offers a sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle and is complete with a state-of-the-art facilities including a full health club/gym set up, functional training, personal training, group exercise classes, Reformer Pilates and a yoga space.

With additional features of a 25m indoor pool, infrared sauna, a meditation pod, compression recovery, virtual sessions as well as signature wellness treatments offered by a fully trained Therapist, guests can find time to focus on themselves while discovering a relaxing state of wellbeing.

Belgravia Leisure – an Australian owned acclaimed health and fitness provider – will manage the venue, drawing on their knowledge of managing over sixty health clubs across Australia and New Zealand, as well as their spa and wellness offerings such as Hepburn Bathhouse and Spa in Daylesford, Victoria. Belgravia Leisure Wellness Expert Bree Melotte worked closely with the team to ensure that various Higher State offerings are tailored to the needs of travellers.

“It is well known that air passengers can be prone to undesirable effects on the body including fatigue, jet lag, insomnia and even digestive issues. Our massages significantly boost circulation, increasing

the blood flow meaning more oxygen is delivered to tired muscles, promoting faster recovery and a reduction in fatigue. Additionally, our compression recovery offering uses air to massage a traveller’s legs, glutes and lower back areas to provide a deep pressure and relaxing massage – the perfect post flight care plan.

“Many of us also experience a loss of moisture in our skin thanks to the dry air that is circulating on board. A post-flight facial is the perfect remedy for this, as while water hydrates the surface of the skin, a facial will drive the moisture deep into the skin and hold it there. We can’t wait for our guests to leave us glowing, relaxed and full of endorphins, the happy chemicals,” Melotte concluded.

Dave Antonello, Victorian Area Manager, Belgravia Leisure is thrilled to be at the helm of such an exciting offering. “Now, more than ever, society is mindful that achieving wellness is not just a goal, but a way of life. We are strong believers that a higher state of health is achieved not only through physical fitness, but also by nurturing a positive and balanced state of mind, and we are proud to promote this belief through our range of offerings at Higher State.

“No matter whether you have just jumped off a long flight and need a massage or some compression recovery, have finished your shift and want to sneak in a quick gym session on the way home, or are a guest of the hotel and want to enjoy some leisurely laps in the pool, Higher State offers a convenient and restorative way to elevate your wellbeing”.

Higher State Melbourne Airport will offer Health Club memberships and casual access options for guests, workers, visitors and local community residents alike.

Chloe Regan Cosmetic Clinic Redefines Aesthetic Care with Cutting-Edge Technology

Located on the Sunshine Coast at beautiful Coolum Beach, Chloe Regan Cosmetic Clinic is a multi-award-winning skin clinic specialising in advanced non-surgical skin treatments. When Chloe decided to invest in cuttingedge technology, she partnered with Cryomed Aesthetics and hasn’t looked back. This investment has expanded her treatment offerings, as well as cemented her reputation as a leader in non-invasive face lifting and skin tightening.

Implementing new technology is a significant decision for a clinic.

What made you choose the Secret RF and then the Ultraformer MPT?

When analysing our patient demographics and listening to their concerns, it became evident that we lacked effective treatments for lifting and tightening. We identified Secret RF as the ideal solution for our clients’ skin tightening needs. The success achieved with Secret RF, in a short time frame, led us to add Ultraformer MPT eight months later. Ultraformer MPT complemented Secret RF for lifting which gave us a comprehensive solution to address our clients’ concerns.

What plans did you put in place for a successful launch?

Execution is key to a successful launch, and a process I’ve refined. To generate excitement and visibility, we devised a comprehensive launch plan in collaboration with Cryomed. This included disseminating newsletters, establishing pricing structures, updating our website, creating social media content, posters, and distributing flyers. We hosted an exclusive VIP event with Cryomed, and before this, we showcased the efficacy of treatments with our before-and-after photos. This all ensured a well-received introduction of our new technologies.

Can you describe how these technologies have transformed your business?

These advanced technologies have allowed us to achieve superior results, greatly enhancing client satisfaction. Existing clients have seen impressive results, effectively addressing their concerns. The exceptional outcomes delivered by these technologies have also attracted new clients. Consequently, we’ve solidified our reputation for delivering exceptional treatment results.

How have these technologies impacted the ROI for your business?

We achieved 100% ROI for Secret RF within 10 weeks, and 12 weeks for Ultraformer MPT. Enhanced results and improved client satisfaction have generated more repeat business and referrals, as well as attracting new clients. The initial investment in these technologies has been swiftly offset by increased demand and higher treatment prices, resulting in a substantial return on investment.

As a Cryomed partner – how have they supported your business to ensure your success?

We’ve received exceptional support that has been crucial to our success. From comprehensive staff training to providing marketing materials and strategies, Cryomed has supported us all the way. They are an indispensable partner in our growth.

How satisfied are your clients with the results of these technologies?

We’ve received so much positive feedback on these treatments all of which we share on our social media platforms. Of note, one client who struggled with sagging skin around her lower face and neck, which severely impacted her self-esteem, had a series of treatments with Ultraformer MPT and Secret RF and the results far exceeded her expectations. Her transformation has been a powerful testimonial to the effectiveness of these technologies, and she has referred several friends to our clinic.

What’s next for your business?

We’re excited about the future with plans to relocate to a larger clinic to meet the growing demand for our services. This expansion will enable us to offer a broader range of treatments and better serve our clients.

Chloe Regan Cosmetic Clinic exemplifies how strategic investment in cutting-edge technology can revolutionise client care and business success in the competitive field of aesthetic treatments. Partnering with Cryomed Aesthetics, and investing in Secret RF and Ultraformer MPT, she has exceeded client expectations, building a loyal following and attracting new clientele. Chloe loves what she does, and it shows in the results! For more information, visit cryomed.com.au

New Injectable Findings

Could climate affect anti-wrinkle dosage requirements?

Recent research highlighted in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (July 2024) underscores how climate influences the dosage requirements for anti-wrinkle injections. Traditionally used for cosmetic purposes, these injections, specifically Botulinum toxin A to the glabella, have shown varying dosage needs based on geographical sun exposure levels. The study, involving 523 women aged 35-60 who underwent treatments between 2012 and 2019, was conducted at two centres – one in the United Kingdom and another in Malta.

In this comparative cohort study, researchers categorised the UK centre as having low sun exposure (winter months) and the Malta centre as having high sun exposure (summer months). Among the participants, 292 were from high-sun areas and 231 from low-sun areas. Over the course of the study, patients attended follow-up visits every three weeks, with doses adjusted until achieving full clinical paralysis.

The findings indicated a notable disparity in dosage requirements between the groups. Specifically, those in high-sun areas required significantly higher average doses compared to their counterparts in low-sun areas (29.2 units vs. 27.3 units; P = 0.0031). Even after adjusting for age in multivariable analysis, the difference remained statistically significant (P = 0.00574). Researchers emphasised that this dosage discrepancy persisted despite controlling for potential confounding factors.

“While the observed difference in dosage may not have substantial health economic implications in terms of vial usage, it underscores the importance of personalised treatment protocols,” remarked researchers in their publication. They highlighted that rigid treatment guidelines might lead to undertreatment in regions with higher sun exposure if not adjusted accordingly.

“...those in high-sun areas required significantly higher average doses compared to their counterparts in low-sun areas”

In an interview with Medscape Medical News, Dr Pooja Sodha, Director of the Center for Laser and Cosmetic Dermatology at George Washington University, Washington, DC, noted the study’s implications. “The findings emphasise the necessity of tailoring neuromodulator treatments not only based on gender but also considering lifestyle and climatic factors,” she stated. Dr Sodha also pointed out other critical factors such as injection technique,

evaluator blinding, prior treatments, and differences in botulinum toxin products that could influence treatment outcomes.

This research not only sheds light on the nuanced application of anti-wrinkle injections but also underscores the importance of adapting clinical practices to local environmental conditions. By recognising these variations, healthcare providers can optimise treatment outcomes for their patients effectively.

Minimal Downtime, Maximum Results With Lutronic’s LaseMD ULTRA

Why is this fractionated laser so popular? Let us explain.

Having a device in your practice that can treat many skin conditions and parts of the body is crucial to offer a wide range of treatments to your clientele. On top of that, minimal downtime paired with maximum results is what patients want these days, and Lutronic’s LaseMD ULTRA delivers on all fronts.

Dramatically different from traditional resurfacing lasers, LaseMD ULTRA rebuilds glowing, healthy skin through gentle, non-ablative fractionated treatments. With treatments that are tunable from mild to aggressive and extremely cost-effective, LaseMD offers customised outcomes with virtually no downtime for all patients, all year round.

The Thulium laser delivers 20 W of power for the fastest, most consistent treatments possible, is easy to operate, and reliable. It is also used for laser assisted drug delivery as it creates channels for better product absorption, making it ideal for hair regrowth treatments. The Comb Tip is specifically designed for scalp revitalisation treatments, and can be used in conjunction with KeraFactor topicals, which achieve outstanding results for patients with hair thinning or alopecia.

Dr Csilla Novak is a medical doctor practicing exclusively in Cosmetic and Laser Medicine, and uses the LaseMD ULTRA in her clinic Elysium Skin Centre in Queensland. She is a Fellow of the Cosmetic Physicians College of Australasia and the QLD representative for the CPCA. She strongly advocates professional and ethical practice in the cosmetic industry and has undergone four years of Dermatology training. She has 25 years of clinical experience in all aspects of skin rejuvenation, cosmetic medicine, laser medicine and injectables.

We talked to Dr Novak about how she uses the LaseMD ULTRA in her practice.

Dr Novak, what is the benefit of having a fractional laser VS a fully ablative one and what made you decide to get Lutronic’s LaseMD ULTRA?

Using a fractional laser allows me to treat the skin effectively with faster recovery for my patients and fewer risks. I chose the LaseMD Ultra 1927nm Thulium laser for its versatility and ease of use. Plus, the results speak for themselves.

What skin concerns do you treat effectively with the LaseMD ULTRA?

I see a lot of patients with sun damage here in the skin cancer capital of the world! I treat a large amount of sun spots, age spots, freckles,

Dr Csilla Novak

pigmentation of other causes, and also fine lines, crepey skin and pores.

What kind of training/qualifications should a practitioner using the LaseMD have in your opinion –is it easy to use?

The LaseMD U LTRA is an easy laser to learn to use. It’s user friendly, customisable but not complicated. It’s a good first resurfacing laser to add to the tool box, versus a fractional ablative CO2 laser. All laser practitioners in Queensland need to be licenced and therefore have adequate training.

How do your patients feel about LaseMD treatments, i.e. what is their feedback in terms of comfort, downtime, and results?

Our patients have regular LaseMD ULTRA treatments, once or twice a year, which is a great sign that they are liking the treatment and the results! Most don’t find it too uncomfortable, and we certainly manage any pain well. Recovery is around 5-7 days, sometimes after 3 days the patients don’t look too bad.

It’s the results that the LaseMD ULTRA delivers that keeps our patients coming back for more.

How does the LaseMD ULTRA stand out compared to other fractionated devices on the market?

I have worked with other fractional resurfacing lasers, non-ablative and ablative, and the LaseMD Ultra is a pleasure to use.

Please explain the comb tip and what kind of scalp treatments you perform.

The “comb tip” on the LaseMD Ultra enables us to treat the scalp by parting the hair to apply laser energy directly to the scalp hair follicles and thereby stimulating hair regrowth. We can use the laser for treatment of any type or cause of alopecia (hair loss).

Do you use KeraFactor products –how do they work?

Yes, we use KeraFactor treatment serum during a LaseMD Ultra treatment as an adjunct for hair growth. The laser creates channels in the scalp skin to enable penetration of the KeraFactor serum which contains a high concentration of growth factors and peptides to stimulate new and thicker hair growth.

We also offer the KeraFactor homecare products including Serum plus Scalp Stimuliating Shampoo and Conditioner to further stimulate hair growth.

Rejuvenation/Pigment

Rejuvenation/Pigment

Would you say using topicals combined with lasers is becoming more common? Do you do face treatments with this method? Which topicals do you use and why?

Yes, laser assisted drug delivery are the buzz words! We love using laser + topicals for facial and body treatments because we achieve an enhanced effect; the laser works on its own and it creates channels for better absorption of the applied topicals.

We achieve more collagen stimulation, better lightening of pigment, more effective pore reduction, and even redness in the skin improves. We use topicals such as platelet-rich-plasma, hyaluronic acid serum, NCTF Boost 135HA, peptides, vitamins, retinoic acid and Salmon DNA to boost results.

“The LaseMD ULTRA is an easy laser to learn to use. It’s user friendly, customisable but not complicated. It’s a good first resurfacing laser to add to the tool box, versus a fractional ablative CO2 laser.”

Touch is the latest innovation from Solta Medical Australia since Thermage FLX in 2018 and the next generation of non-ablative fraction resurfacing lasers designed to treat all skin types, all ages^, all year round using two wavelengths in one complete treatment.

Two wavelengths, endless customisation

Using diode lasers for 1440nm and 1927nm wavelengths with lower power output to a Fraxel makes this laser a perfect introduction to the benefits of non-ablative fractional resurfacing by preventing * the early signs of aging, improving the result of existing skin care regimes and maintaining the youthful results of corrective procedures, such as Fraxel, with little to no downtime.

The benefits of the wavelengths are well established and target water as the chromophore, making it suitable for all skin types. 1440nm can treat deeper concerns of the dermis associated with fine lines and texture, minimising pore appearance and boosting collagen. The 1927nm addresses more superficial skin concerns by improving tone and appearance of pigment, radiance and increasing the permeability of skincare products. Clear + Brilliant Touch delivers all the benefits of the two wavelengths into one convenient treatment in a versatile, comprehensive, smart and affordable platform.

A treatment suitable to a broad patient profile

The versatility of Clear + Brilliant Touch allows you to treat

a wide range of clients, no matter where they are on their skincare journey. The ability to treat with one wavelength or both is available and can be tailored to the client’s concern or specific to an area you are treating. The laser can treat all areas of the face and body.

The system has smart features accessed through an intuitive graphic user interface, that allows you to customise and track the progression of the treatment and retain the details of the treatment using the charting assistance for the face, neck and chest, lower arms and hands, saving time when recording in the client history. The treatment is easy to use and highly delegate-able, the laser is intuitive and incorporates important safety features including only firing with contact and movement with the treatment surface. Switching between laser wavelength is seamless and enhances the users experience during the treatment.

Little to no downtime

Being a laser that can treat all ages^ and all year round, means that it is highly accessible for clients, allowing them to have the treatment in combination with other therapies

and frequently all year round. Clients will appreciate that treatments have little to no downtime and can return to their everyday lives immediately post treatment. This will entice them to coming back for more every two to four weeks and making Touch fundamental to their skin program.

Instant skin improvement is its key benefit, making it one of the most searched and well recognised brands in the aesthetics industry. The treatment is suitable for all clients, and Hydrafacial offers excellent client retention and return rates, with research indicating that 95% of Hydrafacial patients get other aesthetic treatments1 which makes those patients valuable to any aesthetic practice and makes the treatment a great addition for overall revenue improvement.

• 100% of clients would recommend Hydrafacial to a family member or friend1

• 95% of providers say Hydrafacial is extremely useful for attracting new clients into their practice1

• 97% of Hydrafacial providers would enthusiastically recommend partnering with Hydrafacial1

• Local marketing that has a reach of tens of millions of potential new customers every month.1

Hydrafacial offers a unique approach to skin health

• Appropriate for all client types

• Patented technology to purify, nourish, and protect for a one-of-akind experience and glow

• Multi-platform system enables providers to perform a wide range of customised treatments with one device

• The treatment is easy to learn, and the device is easy to use

There are thousands of ways to customise

With a range of treatment options available, clinics can customise treatment to suit the needs of almost any patient. Treatments can be

customised for each client through choice of chemical peel strength from 7.5% Glycol to 30%, 3 specialised tips for the cleanse step for different skin types and options for off-the-face treatment, a variety of suction levels, 10 different booster serums combine to make it easy for practitioners to tailor treatments for skin concerns and goals. There are add-ons such as LED light therapy and lymphatic therapy which is also available to customise treatment.

Hydrafacial plays nicely with other modalities

Hydrafacial also works synergistically with other skin treatments, taking your clients’ skin to new levels and adding a deluxe, experiential element to their overall experience in your clinic. Hydrafacial treatment has demonstrated2,3

• An additional 30% reduction in brown spots when paired with IPL versus IPL alone;

• 2x firmer and smoother skin when paired with non-ablative fractional laser or fractional RF vs non-ablative fractional laser or fractional RF alone;

• 2x smoother skin when paired with RF or focused ultrasound treatment vs RF or focused ultrasound treatment alone;

• 50% smoother skin when paired with ablative fractional laser vs ablative fractional laser alone.

What do our partners think?

“The Hydrafacial system has transformed my business. Not only has it improved the quality of my services, but it has also piqued the curiosity of existing clients and attracted new ones.

With Hydrafacial, we can satisfy the different demands of our clients by providing a comprehensive and customisable treatment menu, offering a standalone treatment or in conjunction with other skincare therapies.

Combining Hydrafacial with modalities like the ‘vampire facial’,

Morpheus8 (radiofrequency), chemical peels, sonophoresis, LED light and microneedling can create a powerful synergy for comprehensive, personalised skin care.”

– Dr Aman Bhinder, Clinic Auriq, SA

“Hydrafacial seamlessly integrates with other modalities like laser and microneedling RF to achieve optimal outcomes. We customise each treatment plan for our patients, which also includes customising their Hydrafacial treatments. For example, patients concerned about pigmentation typically receive the Britenol Booster alongside laser and IPL modalities, while those focused on anti-ageing benefit from microneedling RF and a Retinol Booster.

Our clinic’s membership model includes a monthly Hydrafacial treatment in addition to advanced modalities, providing predictable revenue for our clinic, as well as helping patients sustain long-term skin health and results. The consistent improvements seen after each session contribute to building patient trust and loyalty.”

– Dr Ian Chinsee, Inigo Cosmetic, QLD

“Hydrafacial immediately results in a smoother, more hydrated and glowing skin. With a course of Hydrafacial treatments, the skin is brightened and we see a softening of fine lines. It is particularly beneficial in treating acne skins. The result is less congestion overall and a reduction in active acne. The Hydrafacial technology ensures what you take out of the skin, you put back. Hydrafacial allows us to simultaneously cleanse, extract and hydrate the skin using one piece of machinery. Hydrafacial is the starting point for all skin treatments in the clinic. It is good for all skin types but allows us to cater to a younger demographic as well. It is essential in the deep cleaning process and is something that can be done during someone’s lunch hour. Hydrafacial allows us to maintain good skin habits in between the use of homecare products and more invasive skin treatments in clinic.”

– Dr Steven Liew, Plastic

at Shape Clinic, NSW

“We bought our first Hydrafacial machine back in 2014 and our second one shortly after that. In an industry where trends, treatments and machines tend to come and go, Hydrafacial has endured and remains our most popular treatment. It is the backbone of our clinic, and whilst it is used as a ‘gateway-drug’ to other treatments, the stand-alone results are impressive in their own right.

The Hydrafacial technology has evolved over the years so now with the variety of tips, solutions and boosters, plus the customisable parameters of the machine, it is possible to move from a basic medical-grade Hydrafacial treatment to an advanced clinical experience, tailor-made for each skin that we see.

As a medical skin clinic we certainly see the benefits for our patients in regular monthly Hydrafacials: improved barrier function, better hydration, more even skin tone, less pigment excess, but we also see the synergism in

more effective neurotoxin treatment, improved recovery from ablative laser and greater efficacy of active home skincare.”

– Dr Sarah Boxley, Cosmetic Physician at Skin Box, WA

“We introduced our first Hydrafacial device to our clinics about 5 years ago and it has become a great success! This treatment is beneficial for basically all my patients – old, young, males, females, people with problematic skin and for those who just want to rejuvenate their skin. It is especially useful as an initial treatment for those patients apprehensive about entering the world of cosmetic medicine. I believe Hydrafacial is so well accepted and sought after due to its superior vortex fusion technology that allows a deep clean, effective exfoliation and extraction followed by hydration and support of the skin by the application of serums in a gentle but efficient manner.

Furthermore, our therapists are able to tailor the treatments with different boosters, tips and add-ons such as LED light sessions. We can now even treat other areas of the body other than the face. Our patients love their Hydrafacial treatments because they are very comfortable (even relaxing), and they feel and look fantastic at the end. Patients love to see how much debris was extracted in the waste jar! I partner Hydrafacial treatment with all the other treatments we provide at our clinics. The reason for this is that it helps with lines and wrinkles, elasticity and pores, skin texture, pigmentation problems, enlarged pores and oil congestion. My patients who are coming in for injectables, laser or other devices achieve a better result when they combine their treatment with Hydrafacial.”

– Dr Saras Sundrum, Cosmetic Physician at Dr Saras and Co, NSW

“We are achieving great clinical results with Hydrafacial! Our patients report improved skin texture and tone, increased hydration and moisture retention, along with reduced acne blackheads. It is a perfect pre-event treatment! Hydrafacial is a quick and convenient treatment that can be done in as little as 30 minutes, making it a great treatment option for busy patients seeking results. Because Hydrafacial is a popular and effective skin treatment among consumers, it attracts new patients to our clinic. Offering Hydrafacial as a service alongside our laser and injectables also diversifies the range of the treatments we offer, providing patients with more options and increasing revenue. Providing Hydrafacial treatments enhances the reputation of our clinic as a modern and innovative practice that offers the latest in skincare technology and treatments.”

Dentist to the Stars Dr. Gamer Verdian

WHAT MENOPAUSE DOES TO YOUR TEETH & GUMS

Hormonal changes affect more than your waistline – they can also have a detrimental impact on your teeth and gums. “A drop in oestrogen can lead to less saliva production, which allows bacteria to thrive. The majority of women will start to notice receding gums and some tooth movement because the bones become less dense. That can lead to minor issues like bad breath but also to more serious problems with sensitivity and loose teeth,” says Dr Gamer Verdian, Practice Principal of Sydney’s glamorous Dental Lounge.

“Almost half of women in the menopausal phase suffer from dry mouth or may have burning sensations on the tongue. It’s so important to have regular 6 monthly check-ups and it is very concerning that recent studies show that women are more likely to put off dental health appointments than men.”

COMMON MENOPAUSE SYMPTOMS:

DRY MOUTH

Studies show 43% of healthy menopausal women will experience dry mouth, leading to a higher risk of cavities and periodontal disease, plus potential challenges with chewing, swallowing and even speaking. “Drinking more water, limiting caffeine and chewing sugar-free gum can help to stimulate the production of saliva,” says Dr. Verdian.

SENSITIVITY

Does hot tea or a chilled sparkling water make you wince? Tooth sensitivity occurs when the inner layer of a tooth loses its protective enamel, which is common as we age.

GUM INFLAMMATION

If your gums are red, sore or bleed when brushing, you may have menopausal gingivostomatitis or gingivitis. “We can treat this if it is caught early, but it can progress to severe gum infection and tooth loss if ignored,” says Dr. Verdian.

BURNING MOUTH SYNDROME

Some women experience a metallic taste, something that has baffled scientists for some time. “One theory is that it is related to malfunctioning oestrogen-receptor cells in and around the tongue,” says Dr Verdian. “For about one third of women this can result in a tingling sensation that can affect the lips and tongue and that can really add to the stress of the changes they are going through.”

ORAL THRUSH

Fluctuating hormone levels can lead to an overgrowth of the fungus Candida Albicans, which can affect taste and cause mouth sores. “Rinsing with warm salt water and brushing and flossing twice daily can help but see your dentist in case you need an anti-fungal medication,” says Dr. Verdian.

AFFORDABLE DENTAL CARE

Two-thirds of Australians haven’t seen a dentist in two years or more, a statistic Dr. Verdian is passionate about turning around. “Over 80,000 hospitalisations each year are due to preventable dental conditions because people are putting off trips to the dentist to try and make ends meet. That’s why I made a commitment to establish a fixed price option,” says Dr. Verdian. “Delaying a check-up doesn’t just impact your teeth, but also your heart and brain. Affordable dental care is a vital part of a holistic health system and Dental 99 is the answer.”

At Dental 99, patients pay a fixed price of just $99 for the four main pillars of dentistry: a consultation, non-surgical extraction, thorough check up and clean, and pain management.

The Power Of Exosomes For Skin And Scalp

Exosomes have made big waves in the aesthetics industry in recent years as they represent a novel way to stimulate your own body’s rejuvenation process. Exosomes are small nano-sized vesicles that are produced and released by cells in the body, however, it is important to note that exosomes are not cells themselves and DNA free; they are small vesicles released by cells and are incapable of reproduction. Their main function is to influence other cells and this characteristic gives them a favourable safety profile.

Exomide TM by Xytide offers two exosome products, specifically made to improve skin and scalp. Both Exomide TM Skin and Exomide TM Scalp contain a blend of exosomes, growth factors, amino acids, peptides, and additional ingredients specific to the product’s intended use.

ExomideTM Skin

Easy to incorporate into your treatment menu

If you already offer skin treatments, such as facials, microneedling, or lasers, introducing ExomideTM as an add-on is simple, and there is no additional training required. There are three ways you can use our product:

• Topical Application: Exosomes can be applied directly onto to the skin’s surface. The exosomes are gently massaged into the skin, allowing them to penetrate and communicate with the cells in the epidermis and dermis.

Exomide TM Skin can help with the reduction of fine lines and wrinkles, the improvement of skin texture and pore size, the reduction of pigmentation, and enhanced wound healing. 3 sessions are recommended every 3-4 weeks, with maintenance treatments every 3-6 months.

ExomideTM Scalp

Exomide TM Scalp can help restore and strengthen hair follicles, stimulate hair growth, improve scalp health, and increase hair density and thickness. 4 treatment sessions are recommended every 2 weeks, with maintenance sessions every 3-6 months.

• Microneedling: The combined use of microneedling and exosomes facilitates the direct delivery of active ingredients beneath the epidermis. This process significantly enhances the skin’s capacity to absorb active substances while minimising the loss or wastage of these valuable components by opening channels in the skin barrier.

• Energy-Based Devices: The combination of exosomes with energy-based devices like lasers, radiofrequency, and ultrasound can enhance treatment outcomes by promoting tissue repair, collagen production, and overall skin rejuvenation. Scalp, you also get a great opportunity to introduce hair restoration to your treatment menu, opening up a new target market for you. Exomide is a cosmeceutical product intended for topical use, similar to the use and application of skincare products, and therefore does not require TGA approval.

What You Need To Know About Off-Label Prescribing

DDR GIULIA D’ANNA explains the correct and safe way to prescribe and perform off-label treatments.

ermal fillers, and in particular botulinum toxin, are some of the most common pharmaceuticals prescribed for offlabel use. Yet many practitioners remain in the dark about recommended guidelines for use and the inner workings of off-label prescriptions. Though botulinum toxin is frequently used to treat the masseter and temporalis muscle, its use is considered ‘off-label’ as it is not officially registered for this purpose with the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA).

Clinicians who use Dysport to treat horizontal forehead lines may be surprised to learn its application for this purpose is also considered to be off-label. With so many go-to pharmaceuticals being used outside of their TGA-defined purpose, it pays to know what off-label prescribing actually entails. Crucially, practitioners must familiarise themselves with the clinical requirements needed to keep patients safe and informed of best practice.

What is off-label prescribing?

’Off-label’ prescriptions refer to medicine that is used in ways other than what is specified by the TGA in its product information document on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG). When a drug is prescribed for another indication, at a different dose, via an alternate route of administration or for a patient of an age or gender outside the registered use, it is considered to be off-label.

Since the Therapeutic Goods Act technically does not regulate clinicians, how a device or medication is to be used in an “off- label” way is a decision that every practitioner must make. Despite this, it is common

for practitioners to run into trouble due to their lack of clarity on how to properly administer off-label medicine. The off-label use of hyaluronidase to dissolve fillers, for example, has been the subject of an AHPRA investigation as the regulator seeks to tighten oversight of off-label usage.

Why pharmaceutical companies don’t obtain more listings

The high rate of off-label use of pharmaceuticals amongst practitioners can partially be attributed to the lack of incentives for pharmaceutical companies to seek approval for additional indications, especially if there is unlikely to be any additional revenue for the company.

Due to the significant time and cost of undertaking additional research and obtaining regulatory approvals to have each new use listed on the ARTG register, companies are reluctant to sink millions of dollars to expand the listings for a single drug. Once a pharmaceutical is available on the TGA register, companies prefer to rely on practitioners to make sensible use of the drugs, and undertake the appropriate procedures to acquire patient consent.

Off-label use guidelines

Patient consent must always be established every time a drug is used in an off-label application. Every time a clinician decides to use a drug or device for off-label treatment, they must ensure they have informed consent from the patient.

This should only ever be done after extensively weighing up the patient’s risk-benefit profile which takes into account the risks and

benefits to the patient, and the evidence supporting the safety and efficacy of the proposed treatment. In determining the appropriateness of using a drug off-label, there should be sufficient evidence to support its efficacious and safe use, and an overall favourable harm:benefit ratio for the intended clinical use and population. Practitioners should proceed with treatments when they have decided that they are strictly beneficial to the patient and there is a good body of evidence for the intended off-label use.

Several guides published by the Council of Australian Therapeutic Advisory Groups state that in the event of harm to the patient, “if the off-label use of the medicine in a particular situation is accepted by the practitioner’s peers as constituting competent professional practice, and the patient has given informed consent for its use, then prescribing off-label should not imply negligence.” This implies that there must be a significant body of evidence demonstrating the use of a drug in an off-label way has been tested over a period of time, and there is general consensus among the practitioner’s peers that such use is considered routine.

Off-label use is very common with botulinum toxin drugs, and ample studies of the use of botulinum toxin for the treatment of masseter hypertrophy and bruxism support this. However the evidence of scientific studies do not preclude the practitioner from their responsibility to inform the patient of the off-label use of this drug.

Some practitioners may not be aware that the use of a cannula with dermal filler is also considered off-label, as the delivery method for the drug is different to the ARTG listing. While this is considered the safest delivery method, and is the medical standard in cosmetic injecting, it is again the practitioner’s responsibility to gain consent from their patient for the drug itself as well as the administration of an off-label delivery method.

Is off-label use legal?

In short, the answer is ‘yes”, with the caveat that there must be a large body of evidence that states that the benefit outweighs the risk to the patient, and such treatment is generally accepted amongst your peers.

The onus is on the practitioner to consider whether it is appropriate to use the pharmaceutical in an off-label way.

Using a needle with dermal filler, for example, is associated with a risk of around 1:6,410 per vascular incident according to global experts in cosmetic injecting. If clinicians deliver dermal filler via a cannula, the risk becomes 1:40,187, which in light of a number of high-quality and patient-based studies, translates to a safety profile that is very beneficial for the patient.

To help practitioners with their off-label decision making, a number of professional organisations including the Council of Australian Therapeutic Advisory group have issued guidelines in relation to offlabel medicine use. It is accepted practice that practitioners inform patients and document consent when prescribing off-label. This includes an open discussion about known and unknown benefits and risks. It is crucial that the prescriber documents the reason for off-label use in the patient’s record and ensures that patients are aware of the treatment procedure, along with any reviews that may be required.

Off-label best practice

Every practitioner needs to ensure that patients understand that they are using pharmaceuticals outside of its TGA-sanctioned purpose. Should an adverse event occur following off-label use, clinicians will be relying on informed patient consent they obtained before the procedure. Without it, any potential legal issues would be difficult to defend.

Practitioners who routinely engage in the off-label use of pharmaceuticals are encouraged to examine their consenting process, as well as consent forms, to ensure they are fit for purpose. Even for common drugs like botulinum toxin and dermal fillers, there needs to be clear procedures in place to protect patients and practitioners in the warranted and ethical administration of off-label drugs. If in doubt, it’s recommended that clinicians always err on the side of caution to save themselves from potential minefields further down the line.
