Publisher’s Note
Dear Readers,
With immense pride and gratitude, we celebrate a significant milestone as The islandchief reaches its 100th edition. It is a moment of reflection on a journey that began in August 2016, when our first issue set sail with a clean and simple layout, embodying a vision of clarity and precision. Over the past eight years, we have evolved with the dynamic landscape of the Maldives' tourism and hospitality industry, continually adapting to meet the demands of our readership and delivering a publication that truly reflects the heartbeat of this vibrant sector.
From those early days, The Islandchief has grown into the premier news portal for the Maldivian travel industry. Our mission has always been to provide industry professionals with the intelligence they need to stay ahead, offering everything from market insights and trend analysis to breaking news and exclusive interviews. The numbers speak for themselves: our digital platform draws over 2,000 industry executives monthly, while our total reach across all platforms surpasses 15,000—a testament to the trust and loyalty of our readers.
Over the years, we have continued to innovate, introducing new sections to keep pace with the ever-evolving industry landscape. A significant focus has been on featuring the achievements of women in the tourism sector, as we believe in the power of diverse voices and the importance of promoting women’s empowerment. These efforts are not merely additions to our content; they are reflections of our commitment to equality and our recognition of the vital contributions women make in shaping the future of hospitality.
As we look forward to the future, we remain dedicated to upholding the high standards that have brought us here. We will continue to expand our coverage, diversify our content, and push boundaries to deliver the insights, data, and stories that matter most. Here’s to the next 100 editions and beyond, as we keep charting the course for a thriving tourism industry together.
In this edition, we highlight several recent achievements in the industry. At the SATA 2024 awards in Kathmandu, Maldivian tourism pioneers Mr. Mohamed Moosa and Mr. Hussain Afeef were honored with the prestigious "Face of South Asia" awards for their outstanding contributions to Maldivian tourism, marking a significant celebration of their legacies. Meanwhile, the Chefs Guild of Maldives successfully concluded its inaugural Chefs Symposium, celebrating its 10th anniversary and launching new initiatives aimed at elevating culinary standards and nurturing young chefs in the Maldives. Additionally, the DATA Forum 2024 was held in the Maldives for the first time, bringing together global tourism data experts to discuss data-driven strategies that can enhance consumer engagement and operational effectiveness in the travel industry. Furthermore, the Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI) launched the Reethi Raajje campaign, a year-long initiative promoting responsible waste disposal and environmental stewardship, engaging students in activities designed to inspire future generations.
In our "Bon Appetit" section on page 13, we are delighted to feature Chef Shaziyya, Demi Chef de Partie at Bandos Maldives, who shares her exquisite recipe for Bandos Special Chocolate Biscuit Pudding. Hailing from Thulhaadhoo, an island renowned for its intricate lacquer work, Chef Shaziyya brings extensive expertise to her role, overseeing the daily operations of the Pastry & Bakery kitchen, which includes menu development, inventory management, and ensuring the quality of raw materials for pastry presentation. Driven by her passion for cooking and her ability to create exceptional dining experiences, her dedication is evident in every dish she prepares, seamlessly balancing flavor and technique. The recipe she shares with us is a reflection of her journey and commitment to culinary excellence, making it a fitting tribute to the resort's acclaimed gastronomic offerings.
In our "Frankly Speaking" section on page 13, industry stakeholders share their perspectives on the strategies hoteliers and key players in the Maldivian tourism sector should adopt to navigate the economic challenges, particularly in the face of proposed tax increases.
Thank you for being part of this journey. Here’s to the next 100 editions and beyond!

Congratulations to Island Chief on reaching this incredible milestone of 100 editions! Your commitment to providing insightful coverage and a platform for diverse voices in the Maldives is invaluable. Here's to many more editions filled with impactful stories and positive change.
As the Maldives has evolved politically over the last two decades, we have seen both positive changes and significant challenges. In a country with limited resources, it’s critical that we foster an environment of fair competition and equal opportunity, ensuring that success is not driven by unethical practices or limited to a few. True progress comes when we encourage collaboration and embrace diverse talents and ideas, allowing every individual and business—both local and foreign—the chance to contribute. We must reject practices that unfairly limit competition and move towards a system where success is built on merit, integrity, and fairness. Our nation’s strength lies in our unity, our dedication to ethical principles, and our collective efforts to grow together.

As we celebrate the 100th issue of The Island chief, I am reminded of the magic of the Maldives, where every journey reveals unparalleled beauty and vibrant local culture. In a world of challenges, the Maldives embraces sustainable tourism by preserving the environment and honoring traditions. These efforts create unique experiences that inspire travelers while leaving a positive impact on our planet. Let’s continue to inspire each other and share the beauty of the Maldives.
A huge congratulations to The islandchief for its 100th edition! Throughout its print journey, it has helped its readers connect with the ocean. May you continue to be a voice for our oceans for years to come.
Tourism in the Maldives has supported marine conservation, benefiting from healthy oceans. However, rapid tourism expansion has damaged ecosystems, with habitat destruction and unsustainable reef fishing worsening coral decline. To restore these habitats, the industry must back marine protection, adopt sustainable fishing, promote responsible wildlife interactions, and help Maldivians reconnect with the sea. The Maldives is a special place, and we must work together to preserve it.
Abdulla Ghiyas, Chairman, Maldives Marketing & PR Corporation (MMPRC)
As we celebrate The Islandchief's remarkable 100th issue, it’s a moment to reflect on the immense growth and resilience of the Maldives' tourism industry. Looking back on the last three decades, I’m reminded of how far the Maldivian tourism industry has come—from the days of manual bookings and simple airport operations to the modern, tech-driven luxury experiences we see today. The Islandchief has been a steadfast partner in the later part of this journey, documenting these transformations and celebrating the resilience and adaptability of industry pioneers. Its role in spotlighting milestones, innovations, and challenges makes it more than a publication; it’s a testament to the shared vision of those who have built this world-renowned tourism destination.

Celebrating its 100th edition, The IslandChief has truly cemented its place as a key voice in Maldivian tourism media. Over the years, I've come to understand that travel is more than exploration; it’s about building connections and creating lasting memories. To stay relevant in this evolving landscape, we must genuinely care about the experiences of travelers. When a destination captivates the heart, the journey becomes secondary. The Maldives exemplifies this, making any journey from afar feel worthwhile and rewarding.

The Maldives is one of the world's premier dive destinations, offering year-round underwater experiences in warm waters that allow divers to be comfortable in light swimwear. Even beginners can enjoy the vibrant colors of marine life from their very first dive, thanks to reefs located at depths no greater than 30 meters.
I would like to emphasize that emerging guides should be responsible and disciplined when accompanying guests, ensuring they are well cared for while demonstrating practices that align with environmental protection guidelines. This approach will benefit the tourism industry, especially for guests who are passionate about diving and eager to learn responsible actions.
Lastly, I would like to congratulate The islandchief on its 100th edition for bringing positivity and exposure to various local industry-related businesses.

MACL Signs Agreement with BUCG on Monorail System Connecting Malé
and K. Funadhoo
This initiative is supported by funding from the UAE's International Free Zone Authority (IFZA), following a prior agreement that was established earlier this year in May. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has articulated a vision for the creation of a Special Economic and Financial Service Zone in Funadhoo. This zone is expected to be seamlessly integrated with the forthcoming monorail system, enhancing connectivity and economic activity in the region.
Economic Minister Mohammed Saeed announced these transformative plans in May 2024, emphasizing the project's alignment with the broader development strategy for Velana International Airport (VIA). The implementation of the monorail project is set to revolutionize transportation options in the Maldives, contributing to the nation's economic growth and improving accessibility for residents and visitors alike.
Airport Fee Revisions in the Maldives: Impact on Travelers and Tourism
The Maldivian Parliament has introduced significant changes to the Airport Departure Tax and the Airport Development Fee, marking a shift in how fees are charged to travelers. Initially, the airport tax system, known as the Airport Service Charge (ASC), imposed fees of USD 25 on International Passengers and USD 12 on Local travelers. This structure was revamped with the implementation of the Airport Taxes and Fees Act on December 7, 2016.
These new tax increases are expected to raise airfare, particularly impacting budget-conscious travelers. The higher costs associated with air travel could discourage tourism and business trips, potentially undermining the economic benefits that a thriving tourism sector provides.
It is essential to strike a balance between generating necessary revenue and maintaining the attractiveness of the Maldives as a travel destination. This involves considering both the short-term financial implications for passengers and the long-term viability of the aviation industry. A well-considered strategy for adjusting airport fees can ensure the sustainability of air travel in the Maldives while keeping it affordable and accessible for all passengers.
8th Asian Council Forum: A Commitment to Sustainable Tourism and Local Governance

Attendees united to discuss, learn, and collaborate on solutions that ensured
tourism benefited local communities while safeguarding the environment for future generations. Participants engaged in a series of presentations and discussions, focusing on sustainable development and effective governance—crucial elements for thriving local tourism.
The day’s agenda included significant international presentations from member nations of the Asian Council Forum. Notably, esteemed councilors
from Taipei City Council, Taiwan, provided insights on “Sustainable Tourism in Taiwan: Green Tour and Live Music.” This was followed by a compelling presentation from Mr. Yoshiyuki Kuriyama of Japan, emphasizing the importance of reducing environmental impacts in tourism.
The forum also featured a session on Local Governance Challenges in the Tourism Industry, led by representatives
from Baa Atoll and the Maldives Local Councils Association (MLCA). This session underscored the shared interests among nations in fostering sustainable tourism practices.
A highlight of the event was the panel discussion on Sustainable Tourism and Local Governance, expertly moderated by Mr. Abdullah Shuja, President of B. Maalhos Council. Esteemed panelists, including local and international leaders, engaged in a rich exchange of ideas, emphasizing the collective effort needed to address the challenges faced by the tourism industry.
The event commemorated the formal joining of the Maldives Local Councils Association (MLCA) to the Asian Council Forum (ACF), further strengthening collaborative efforts towards sustainable governance in tourism. As the forum drew to a close, heartfelt gratitude was extended to all speakers and participants for their invaluable contributions. It was hoped that everyone left inspired and equipped to drive action in their respective communities.

For hoteliers and stakeholders in the Maldives tourism industry, what’s the best way to survive during periods of stormy economic turbulence, especially when taxes have also increased?
Ahmed Arshad Director Avia Maldives
In the face of rising costs, it is essential for hoteliers and stakeholders in the Maldives tourism industry to emphasize the unique experiences that the Maldives o ers. By highlighting these exceptional o erings, guests can truly recognize the value of their stay, making it all the more meaningful.
Enhancing customer service is critical; creating memorable guest experiences is key to encouraging repeat visits and fostering positive word-of-mouth marketing. When guests feel valued and delighted by their stay, they are more likely to return and recommend the destination to others.
Implementing flexible pricing strategies is also vital. Adjusting rates based on market demand will ensure competitiveness while still maintaining profitability. Additionally, introducing loyalty programs or special promotions can e ectively attract repeat guests, incentivizing them to choose your establishment for their future travels.
It's equally important to develop a robust crisis management plan. This should include financial forecasting and strategies to address rapidly changing market conditions, ensuring that your business can respond quickly and e ectively to any situation that arises.
Ahmed Zubair Adam Managing Director Blue Horizon
We have to maintain a competetive price in the market and during economic turbulences have to wear the belt a notch tighter and ride thru the storm , fortunately turbulence is for a short period.
Survival hinges on liquidity management and dynamic operational adjustments. Hoteliers must optimize cash flow by reducing non-essential expenses, renegotiating debt terms, and adapting o erings to shifting demand. Stakeholders should forecast the duration of turbulence, focusing on fiscal sustainability while exploring targeted tax relief or deferral strategies to ease short-term pressures.
Abdulla Fathhey General Manager Villa Park
A flat $500 per head exchange to Maldivian Rufiyaa might not fairly reflect the diversity in room rates and categories across resorts, especially when the length of stays varies.
Adopting a percentage-based approach on revenue, tailored to each resort’s earnings, could o er greater equity. Furthermore, considering the varying policies on infants and children’s occupancy, adjusting this policy would ensure a more equitable system that respects the unique setup of each resort.
I believe that changes to the existing taxes may result in unfavorable impacts, influencing customers' decision-making.
Moosa Rasheed Managing Director Aimo Travels / Island Safari Fleet
With these changes. Businesses are struggling at the moment.
