Publisher’s Note
Dear Readers,
March unfurls a season of rejuvenation, epitomized by the rising allure of wellness retreats. These tranquil havens offer indulgent spa treatments, holistic therapies, and mindful pursuits, all designed to refresh both body and soul. In the Maldives, the wellness landscape has undergone a profound transformation as travelers embrace the healing power of nature, with resorts returning to their roots, encouraging a reconnection with the natural world. Replacing modern stimulants with a more holistic approach, the Maldives' wellness offerings have become increasingly diverse and inclusive.
It is also a time to honor the remarkable women shaping the Maldives’ tourism and hospitality landscape as we commemorate International Women’s Day (March 8). From resort managers and chefs to dive instructors and marketing pioneers, their invaluable contributions continue to drive innovation and elevate guest experiences. Yet, the path to gender equality remains long—at the current pace, true parity may not be realized until 2158. This year’s theme, #AccelerateAction, underscores the pressing need for change. By championing leadership, fostering equal opportunities, and dismantling biases, we can empower women and, in turn, fortify the industry’s future.
This month also heralds an array of exquisite events across the Maldives. Angsana Velavaru ignites Holi celebrations with a week of colorful festivities, while The St. Regis Maldives curates Blush de Peonia, an opulent Easter retreatfeaturing gourmet dining and indulgent spa experiences. Kuda Villingili Resort marks Eid al-Fitr with a culturally immersive celebration, complete with Middle Eastern feasts and rhythmic Bodu Beru performances. Looking ahead, Lily Beach Resort & Spa’s Harmonic Bliss Week in November promises unparalleled relaxation, led by world-renowned sound therapist Ali Young.
Our cover story shines a spotlight on Fathmath Umar, Senior Lecturer at Villa College and Secretary General of the Chefs Guild of Maldives. A trailblazer in Maldivian culinary education, she has dedicated her career to elevating local cuisine and championing Maldivian chefs on the global stage. Her passion and dedication have earned her a National Award of Recognition, and in this exclusive interview, she shares her insights and aspirations for the future of the industry.
In Bon Appétit, we present Chef Rami Ishak, Executive Chef at SAii Lagoon Maldives, who unveils his signature dish: Herb Crushed Lamb with Saffron Purée, Quinoa, Pickled Vegetables, and Mint Jus. A masterful balance of flavors and textures, this exquisite creation pairs succulent, herb-infused lamb with the silky richness of saffron purée, the earthy crunch of quinoa, and the vibrant tang of pickled vegetables, all elevated by a refreshing mint jus. With 23 years of culinary mastery, Chef Rami artfully blends tradition with innovation, mentoring future chefs and celebrating food as a profound expression of culture.
Finally, in Frankly Speaking, industry stakeholders engage in a compelling discussion: with 69% of tourists choosing resorts, how can guesthouses, hotels, and liveaboards enhance their offerings to attract a larger share of visitors while maintaining a balanced tourism ecosystem?
Join us as we celebrate a month of culture, empowerment, and transformation.

OZEN LIFE MAADHOO Achieves Prestigious Green Globe Gold Certification
THE OZEN COLLECTION proudly announces that OZEN LIFE MAADHOO has been awarded the Green Globe Gold Certification after five consecutive years of certification. This esteemed accolade recognises the resort’s relentless dedication to environmental stewardship, blending world-class luxury with groundbreaking sustainability practices that safeguard the Maldives’ fragile ecosystems. A Chapter in Eco-innovation
At the core of OZEN LIFE MAADHOO’s success is its holistic approach to conservation. The resort’s in-house marine biologists spearhead a coral restoration project, reviving a 300-metre stretch of its house reef using 80 coral frames that nurture over 2,000 coral fragments. Collaborations with Manta Trust, Olive Ridley Project,
and Parley—alongside an upcoming partnership with Miyaru NGO—enhance marine protection efforts, while guest education programs foster awareness of ocean conservation.
“Our coral restoration project is more than conservation—it’s a promise to future generations. By reviving our house reef, we’re rebuilding a thriving ecosystem”, says Nuria Camps Suarez, Head Marine Biologist at OZEN LIFE MAADHOO. “Partnering with organisations like Manta Trust and Parley amplifies our impact, ensuring the Maldives’ marine legacy endures”.
The resort also harnesses renewable energy through one of the Maldives’ largest floating solar panel systems. Twelve platforms with 720 panels, combined with 1,095 rooftop solar
units, generate 30% of the island’s energy needs, significantly reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
OZEN LIFE MAADHOO’s zero-waste ethos is embodied in its cutting-edge waste management systems. A fully automated organic composter transforms 3 tons of green waste weekly into nutrient-rich fertiliser, while in-vessel shredders repurpose garden clippings into compost. Glass bottles are crushed and repurposed into minor construction purposes.
In the realm of sustainable dining, the resort’s hydroponic farm revolutionises gastronomy. By cultivating lettuce and herbs in a soilless system, water consumption plummets from 250 litres to just 50 litres per kilogram—meeting 70% of the island’s lettuce demand
while delivering crisp, organic ingredients to its award-winning restaurants.
Redefining Luxury Through Responsibility
These initiatives are seamlessly woven into the guest experience, where guests indulge in bespoke experiences—from snorkelling among regenerated reefs to savouring hydroponic harvests— without compromising their environmental values. As OZEN LIFE MAADHOO continues to pioneer eco-conscious hospitality, it reaffirms THE OZEN COLLECTION’s ethos of ‘Refined Elegance’, where every stay leaves a positive imprint on the planet.

N. Magoodhoo Celebrates the Successful Conclusion of the Budu Fothi Reusable Nappy Program
The island of N. Magoodhoo came together on January 31st, 2025, to celebrate the successful completion of Budu Fothi, a pioneering reusable nappy initiative aimed at reducing nappy waste and promoting sustainable parenting practices. The program was collaboratively led by Soneva Namoona, Magoodhoo Council, the Magoodhoo Women’s Development Committee, and the Magoodhoo Health Centre.
The four-month trial, which ran from August to December 2024, provided 33 children (from 31 families) in Magoodhoo with a cloth nappy kit, educational resources on their usage, and access to a community support group. The initiative sought to evaluate the economic, environmental, and social benefits of cloth nappies while encouraging behavior change within the community.
At the community celebration, families, stakeholders, and local leaders gathered to acknowledge the program’s impact and recognise outstanding participants. The event featured an official ceremony, stalls with educational and sustainability-themed activities, and opportunities for families to share their experiences.
Key Achievements of the Budu Fothi Program:
60% of the participating children adopted the use of cloth nappies, with most families using them alongside disposables.
Four parents fully transitioned to cloth nappies during the trial, including one parent who had already adopted cloth nappies prior to the program.
Parents reported significant financial savings and noted that cloth nappies contributed to faster potty training for their children.
Over 80% of participating parents stated they would recommend cloth nappies to other families.
Four S Traders, a local retail shop in Magoodhoo, has now been established as an official agent for cloth nappies, ensuring continued access to sustainable nappy options in the community.
Reena Mohamedfulhu, a participating mother in the Budu Fothi program, shared her experience, saying, "At first, I was hesitant about switching to cloth nappies—I worried whether they would be comfortable for my baby. But to my surprise, my baby didn’t seem to mind
the difference at all. In fact, using cloth nappies helped speed up the potty training process, which was an unexpected benefit. And the savings have been significant—since making the switch, we’ve saved over MVR 1,000 every month. I’m really glad we joined this program, and I would definitely recommend cloth nappies to other parents."
Reflecting on the program, Maajidha Hassan, President of the Magoodhoo Women’s Development Committee, highlighted the broader impact of the initiative, stating, "Budu Fothi has demonstrated that small changes can lead to significant benefits for families and the environment. By reducing waste and offering a healthier alternative, this program has
empowered parents to make sustainable choices for their children’s future."
Khadeeja Hamid, Reduce Manager of Soneva Namoona, emphasized the importance of such initiatives in driving systemic change, saying: "The success of this trial provides valuable data to inform future advocacy and policy efforts. Our hope is that this initiative serves as both a model and a catalyst for other communities, encouraging the wider adoption of reusable alternatives.”
The insights gathered from the Budu Fothi trial will be used to advocate for policy recommendations, further community outreach, and educational campaigns to promote sustainable diapering solutions across the Maldives.
NHGAM Strengthens Local Tourism Ties with Successful Visit to AA.Ukulhas
The National Hotels and Guesthouse Association of Maldives (NHGAM) has successfully concluded a significant visit to AA. Ukulhas, where they met with the AA. Ukulhas Council and local guesthouse owners to strengthen collaboration in promoting local tourism.
NHGAM, a national NGO dedicated to
lobbying the government for the rights of hotels and guesthouses in the Maldives, has also been actively working on international marketing efforts. In December last year, the organization successfully conducted a tourism roadshow in Azerbaijan and Georgia to promote Maldivian guesthouses on a global scale.
During this visit, NHGAM’s executive board engaged in productive discussions with the AA. Ukulhas Council, which expressed strong support for the association’s initiatives. The highlight of the visit was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between NHGAM and the Council, solidifying a partnership to further enhance the marketing of AA. Ukulhas as a prime local tourism destination.
Listening to Guesthouse Owners’ Concerns As part of their outreach, NHGAM board members visited all registered guesthouses on the island, actively listening to the concerns and challenges faced by business owners. This engagement was essential in identifying key areas where the association can focus its lobbying efforts to bring about positive change at the policy level.
Additionally, NHGAM representatives introduced the membership options available to guesthouses, categorized
into three tiers: Gold, Silver, and Proud. Each category offers unique benefits, with Gold membership providing the most comprehensive support and marketing opportunities. The response from guesthouse owners was overwhelmingly positive, with the majority opting for Gold membership, showcasing their strong commitment to being actively involved in NHGAM’s initiatives.
“This visit marks the beginning of a broader effort to directly connect with guest house owners across the Maldives,” said the President of NHGAM.
The association plans to conduct similar activities in other islands to further strengthen its network and ensure that local guesthouse businesses receive the support they need. With the successful conclusion of this visit, NHGAM is set to play a pivotal role in advancing local tourism and advocating for the interests of hotels and guesthouses nationwide.

With 69% of tourists choosing resorts, how can guesthouses, hotels, and liveaboards enhance their offerings to attract a larger share of visitors while maintaining a balanced tourism ecosystem?
Nimad Ibrahim Managing Director Plumeria Maldives
To attract more visitors while keeping a balanced tourism ecosystem, guesthouses and hotels in the Maldives must work closely with island administrations to protect nature, culture, and local communities. Tourist businesses should meet basic service standards by following hospitality best practices, providing professional service that ensures guest satisfaction and safety. It is also important for island administrations to ensure the environment is clean and secure, while reducing noise and pollution to create a peaceful setting where visitors can fully enjoy an authentic Maldivian experience.
By offering cultural activities that connect guests with the local community, these accommodations can appeal to travelers who want to experience the local way of life, ensuring both guest satisfaction and the long-term health of the islands.
Ahmed Zubair Adam Director Blue Horizon
The same old mentality and action plan will not work. Policy makers, tertiary services and the private sector need to sing from the same hymn sheet and work together.
Need to segment the market and develop the markets and reach the segments. Differentiating the products we offer in local islands such as pensioners, long stays, liveaboards, cruise markets and FAD Spear Fishing etc.
Ibrahim Nizam Tourism Consultant & Brand Strategist
Many dream of running a hotel or accommodation successfully for guests on an island, but standing out among the huge crowd is a challenge. Let's look for some effective strategies for a successful operation in a competitive market and for providing a lasting experience to guests.
Maintaining the natural beauty:
Caring for the natural environment and ecosystem and maintaining its beauty is crucial to attracting guests and having a pleasant ambience.
Experiences for the guests & personalized services:
Guests choose our islands and hotels for a joyful holiday filled with experiences they can cherish for days, months and years. It could be a private dinner on a secluded beach, a BBQ lunch on an uninhabited island, or a night-fishing, snorkelling, or fun-filled water sports.
Social Media and online marketing:
Virtual presence and online marketing to the right audience are essential to staying connected to holiday planners. Guest reviews and word of mouth are also cost-effective marketing methods.
One happy customer may recommend your hotel to ten others, while an unhappy customer may tell his unpleasant experiences to forty people. Therefore, ensuring the guests' satisfaction with the services and the hotel is vital for a successful operation.
In terms of actual beds and occupancies, that's on par with the rest, except guesthouses. I believe a lot of guesthouses are competing on prices, with the quality of service being impacted. As a result, repeat clients are less compared to the others. Quality of services and food is important at a destination such as maldives, and that's what should be maintained to compete with others to get a fair market share.
