But as global threats like climate change, overfishing, and pollution endanger marine ecosystems worldwide, the Maldives faces a growing responsibility to protect its fragile underwater environments.

Recognising this, Ellaidhoo Maldives by Cinnamon has taken a proactive step in environmental stewardship by opening a dedicated Marine Biology Unit to champion marine conservation and inspire a sense of shared responsibility among guests, staff, and the surrounding community.

Each day, guests can engage with educational content through talks that introduce them to the intricate web of ocean ecosystems. The topics vary from the wonders of coral reefs to the fascinating behaviours of the region’s marine life. To encourage exploration, the unit displays the day’s topic outside its doors, sparking curiosity and inviting guests to learn more. Fish identification checklists are also provided, helping guests deepen their understanding as they venture into Ellaidhoo’s thriving reefs.

Commenting on this milestone, Sanjeeva Perera, General Manager of Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts, said, “The launch of our Marine Biology Unit is the realization of a long-awaited dream and a meaningful contribution to our ESG

initiatives. Our mission is to empower guests and staff to become true stewards of the ocean, fostering a deep respect for marine life that will resonate long after their stay at Ellaidhoo Maldives by Cinnamon. We hope this initiative not only enriches their experience but also builds a foundation of environmental responsibility that extends to the wider community.”

Rise for the Ocean: The Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort Inspires Youth in Maalhos Island for Sustainable Ocean Conservation

As part of its ongoing commitment to sustainability and community engagement, The Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort, in partnership with twelve-time world record freediver Christian Redl, hosted an inspiring island cleanup and plastic pollution awareness session in Maalhos Island, Baa Atoll, on October 27, 2024. Curated through Marriott Bonvoy Moments, the event brought together over 70 local youth and children to challenge the pressing issue of marine pollution in one of the most biodiverse corners of the Maldives.

Christian Redl, founder of the non-profit organization 7Oceans, led the session, sharing his vast knowledge on global ocean challenges, including coral bleaching, ghost nets, and plastic waste pollution. His presence brought significant attention to the environmental issues facing Baa Atoll, the Maldives' first UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, which is home to rare pink hydrozoan corals and seasonal gatherings of manta rays and whale sharks in nearby Hanifaru Bay.

The event, held in collaboration with USAID’s Ocean Plastics Reduction Activity, garnered enthusiastic participation from the local community, including children and young adults from Maalhos. Together, they took part in an educational beach cleanup, learning how

to identify, categorize, and quantify marine litter. Through hands-on experience, participants gained practical skills in data collection while developing a deeper understanding of the impact of plastic pollution on the marine ecosystem.

Following the beach cleanup, Redl engaged with the youth in an interactive plastic awareness session. Participants shared their findings, categorizing waste materials such as beverage containers, food packaging, and plastic wrappers. These presentations encouraged discussions on how individual actions contribute to ocean preservation, reinforcing the need for sustainable practices within the local community.

“We are incredibly proud to collaborate with Christian Redl and the community of Maalhos Island to inspire a new

generation of environmental stewards,” said Vijay Kumar, the General Manager of The Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort. “This event aligns with our resort’s mission to foster a deeper connection between our guests, the local community, and the ocean that surrounds us. MIOT Hospital Introduces Genicular Artery Embolization to Maldivian Doctors

MIOT Hospital, a multispecialty facility in Chennai, India, recently hosted its “Connect MIOT” event in the Maldives, aiming to foster collaboration with local doctors and introduce its genicular artery embolization treatment.

The session included detailed presentations on the procedure, case studies, and a Q&A segment to provide Maldivian health workers with comprehensive insights into the treatment.

Genicular artery embolization is a minimally invasive alternative to knee joint replacement for patients with osteoarthritis. Using interventional radiology, the procedure blocks specific blood vessels transmitting pain to the knee joint. Conducted under anesthesia, it offers pain relief within two days, restoring pain-free mobility for two to three years.

The treatment, successfully practiced for two years, is particularly beneficial for elderly patients and individuals with complications such as diabetes or obesity, making traditional surgery unsuitable.

Dr. Prithvi Mohandas, Managing Director of MIOT Hospital, emphasized the importance of knowledge-sharing with Maldivian doctors, highlighting the hospital’s readiness to introduce this procedure in the Maldives, where knee arthritis is prevalent.

“Only a cath lab is required to begin this service, and such facilities are already available in Maldivian hospitals,” said Dr. Prithvi. He further offered training for Maldivian doctors

to perform the procedure and expressed MIOT’s commitment to enhancing healthcare in the region.

What strategies can hotels and resorts adopt to align their operations with Sustainable Development Goals?

Sustainability drives our actions, which are aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals.

We emphasise energy e ciency with LED lighting and energy-saving appliances. Water conservation is a priority, with recycled wastewater and rainwater harvesting for planting. We transform organic waste into fertilizer. While we support the community through local sourcing, we also grow herbs and some produce in our Chef’s Garden.

Engagement with local villages includes cultural shows and excursions. Through these e orts, we aim to preserve our environment and inspire guests to join us in making a positive impact.

Hotels and resorts can adopt a variety of strategies to align their operations with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

These strategies include implementing energy-saving and e ciency programs, minimizing water waste by utilizing recycled water for cleaning, and establishing e ective waste management systems. Additionally, capacity building and sta training, promoting biodiversity, and conserving marine life are crucial components of this approach.

By adopting these initiatives, hotels and resorts can pave the way for responsible tourism.

Hotels and Resorts have to align our operations with Sustainable Development Goals by adopting eco-friendly practices such as switching to renewable energy like solar power, managing waste responsibly and reducing carbon footprint . Sourcing local products and o ering fair job opportunities to support community well-being.

Engaging sta and guests in sustainable activities and raising awareness make sustainability a shared e ort. These small yet impactful steps, along with partnerships with green organizations, contribute to protecting the planet and achieving global goals.

We take thoughtful steps towards energy e ciency by using smart energy systems and transitioning to e cient appliances and lighting.

Our water conservation e orts include an in-house bottling plant and water production systems. To minimise waste, we have eliminated single-use plastics and repurpose food waste for composting. Supporting well-being is equally important, with yoga and meditation programmes for associates with the “Nurturing Minds” campaign. We also partner with local health organisations to uplift our island community.

Each initiative reflects our commitment to preserving the environment while fostering a healthy, connected community.
